SPECIAL REPORT: The truth about Hello. Welcome to Latest TV's Brighton and Hove Labour Party first-ever broadcast"
'An insult to democracy' Greg Hadfield and Frank le Duc @BrightonIndy The Labour Party has suspended the local branch party in one of its staunchest strongholds. It has also instigated "a consultation" on what threatens to be a fundamental restructuring of the 1,400-member Brighton and Hove District Labour Party "to ensure that the objectives for branches as set out in the Labour Party Rule Book are being met". The shock decision to suspend Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch - "pending an investigation" - has fuelled concerns that the city
party's ruling executive plans to marginalise even further the influence of grassroots members. Malcolm Powers, the unelected regional director employed by the Labour Party and its members, broke the news to branch officers in an email. He told Robert Brown, chair of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Branch Labour Party: "During the period of the suspension, the Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch will not be able to meet or conduct any formal Labour Party business." Mr Powers did, however, assure members they could still campaign for the party.
His intervention was condemned as "an insult to democracy" by one well-informed Labour Party figure. Today, Brighton & Hove Independent publishes a coruscating attack - by David Butler, vice-chair of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch - on the city party’s “arrogant abuse of power” (see page 19). Grassroots members are particularly angry at the treatment of Councillor Leigh Farrow, the veteran party member who was suspended last month from the panel of “approved” candidates >> Continued on page 3
Whatever happens, they are the words and images that will go down in history as Latest TV, Brighton and Hove's local television channel, finally went on air for the first time yesterday (Thursday). You can see it for yourself on Freeview Channel 8 and Virgin 159.

Charity inspires Labour shadow minister tasked to tackle violence against women
Less than 72 hours before she was named as the Labour Party's shadow minister post with responsibility to prevent violence against women, Seema Malhotra - the Labour MP for Feltham and Heston - visited Brighton and Hove. Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, described her appointment as "another indication of the importance a Labour government will place on tackling violence against women and girls". Hosted by Purna Sen, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion, Ms Malhotra made a private visit to learn more about RISE, the local support service for women experiencing violence and their children. Ms Sen, a RISE trustee and a leading expert on the subject, championed the successful Fear-free Football campaign aimed at highlighting the risk of male violence against women during the recent World Cup. The campaign was highlighted on the front-page of Brighton & Hove Independent. For support to tackle domestic abuse, call RISE on 01273 622822; if you are in danger call 999. For more information, visit: www.riseuk.org.uk
> Continued from page 1 after a complaint that he swore during a private meeting with two fellow Labour councillors. Immediately before the meeting of the council’s housing committee on June 18, Cllr Farrow allegedly swore when Councillor Chaun Wilson, the party’s housing spokesperson, passed on voting instructions from Councillor Gill Mitchell, the Labour Group whip. Cllr Mitchell subsequently had Cllr Farrow removed from the housing committee, making him the only Labour councillor not to sit on any council committees. Cllr Farrow successfully appealed against a previous attempt to de-select him as a council candidate, during his recovery from a double heartbypass operation. Friends believe he is the long-suffering victim of "a witch-hunt", with city party leaders determined to install a favoured candidate of their own. The 59-year-old councillor is expected to attend a Southeast Regional Labour Party disciplinary hearing in the next couple of weeks, accompanied by a supporter who can act as “a silent friend”. He has until Monday (September 1) to submit a deposition. Cllr Farrow has rejected
defamatory attempts to establish a "pattern of behaviour" and accusations that he failed to meet the requirements of the Labour Party's "candidates' contract". He has told friends that he accepts he "mis-spoke" and has offered his unreserved apologies for any offence caused. Friends are urging him to stand as an independent candidate for “Progressive Labour”. Mr Brown, the branch chair, has written a letter of support. In it, he states: “With knowledge and experience of the character of the area, I wish it to be known that by de-selecting a popular sitting local representative, the present action against Leigh could very well cause voter apathy as well as de-motivating local party activists. “Given the working-class demographic of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, there is, too, surely a high risk of contributing to an increase of support for UKIP and/or delivering the council seat to the Tories. The impact upon the parliamentary campaign can only be negative also.” Earlier this month, a meeting of branch members voted unanimously to support him. Before the meeting, there was a report of a leaked "crisis" email from Mr Brown, the branch chair, to the three local
councillors – Cllr Farrow, Anne Meadows, Mo Marsh - as well as to Nancy Platts, the Labour parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown. In the leaked email, Mr Brown warned: “If they (ward party members) turn up and find that one of the councillors has been de-selected without consulting the ward members and if Leigh is not reinstated to his post, I can see members leaving the party because it is undemocratic and a hidden few are overruling the members’ wishes." Since the suspension of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch, a series of questions have been asked by members, including Cllr Meadows, who was herself suspended – and then re-instated - after an anonymous claim that a gift had gone missing while she was mayor; no evidence could be found to support any wrongdoing on her part. The questions being asked by grassroots members include: ■ What is the reason for the suspension of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Branch Labour Party? ■ What is Mr Powers investigating? ■ If there is a consultation about the city party, why is Moulsecoomb and Bevendean the only branch suspended

Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning committee has rejected a proposal to transform a former Brighton pub into a hostel. Developers wanted to convert the Toby Inn in Cowley Drive, Woodingdean, into an 18-room hostel. Local residents opposed the plans and councillors on the planning committee rejected them.
Brighton is likely to feature heavily on TV screens next month when the Tour of Britain cycle race visits the city. ITV 4 is due to broadcast the stage between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday, September 13 meaning viewers should get a good glimpse of riders racing through the city.
Alexandra Lewis, a volunteer from the Brighton and Hove National Childcare Trust (NCT) branch, has been named regional winner of the NCT Star Awards for Parent Supporter of the Year. The awards recognise the achievements of the 10,000 NCT volunteers who give their time to support all new parents during their first 1,000 days from pregnancy.
while this happens? With the city party due to hold an all-member meeting on Saturday, September 6 - before Cllr Farrow’s disciplinary hearing - it will not be long before answers have to be given. “An insult to democracy” - For full details of our special report, see page 18
The Argus sales hit record low of 13,746 The Argus newspaper has recorded its lowest-ever circulation figures with an average of only 13,746 daily sales across the whole of Sussex in June. Official figures - not yet reported in the Brighton-based newspaper show that circulation fell by 13.6% in the six months to the end of June, compared with the same period last year. On average, the daily circulation of The Argus across East Sussex, West Sussex, and Brighton and Hove was just 14,370 in the first half of the year. It is estimated it sells only 4,600 copies within the city. In contrast, Brighton & Hove Independent distributes 14,000 copies – all of them within Brighton and Hove. In the circumstances, however, the sharp fall could have been worse; previous six-monthly falls were 21.1% and 25.8%. The disclosure of the newspaper's continuing decline comes after the Advertising Standards Authority found it guilty of misleading advertisers by publishing an unsubstantiated claim that its audience had increased by 24.6%.

Guerrilla gardeners on a mission to brighten up city’s streets A grassroots guerrilla gardening group has started planting flowers in the earth underneath roadside trees in an effort to cheer up Brighton and Hove. Eagle-eyed locals may have spotted the first signs of the gardening campaign, which sprung up around Stanford Avenue and Rugby Road earlier this week. An array of flowers have been planted alongside trees in the area, providing a splash of colour to contrast the grey of the neighbouring concrete pavements. The project, dubbed Communitree, may have started in the Fiveways area of the city but the people behind it hope others across Brighton and Hove will follow their lead and guerrilla gardening will spread. The idea is the brainchild of Adam Johnson, a local artist, and Dan Mackey, a graphic designer, and it has already proved a hit with social media users, many of whom have taken to Twitter to praise the scheme using the hashtag #Communitree. Mr Mackey explained: “Autumn might be just around the corner, but that just serves as a perfect excuse to inject some colour with flowers into unused public spaces. “We want to improve small, unused squares underneath trees and transform them into mini garden spaces that make people smile. “Water these thirsty chaps and see the flowers come to life. Add to the patches, make your own, and get involved with your Communitree. “With a little bit of help we can make something awesome.”

New station mosaic Brighton and Hove Albion fans making their way to the Amex via London Road station will now be greeted by the sight of an eight-foot long football-themed mosaic. The club’s charity, Albion in the Community (AITC), worked with a group of local young people to spruce up the station’s subway as part of a four-week course run throughout the school holidays. Elsewhere, young volunteers took part in 13 other community projects, including helping refurbish a local care home.
Portslade Aldridge Community Academy is a co-educational school for 11-18 year olds, based in the heart of Portslade.

The pavement next to the Clock Tower in North Street will be temporarily transformed into a bedroom to highlight the problems of high rents in Brighton. Campaigners will be at the Clock Tower between 11am and 1pm tomorrow (Saturday) and want to shed light on the precarious life of many private tenants in the city. An organiser said: “There is a groundswell of people calling for reform and we are determined that the politicians will stop ignoring the problem.”
This year’s Brighton Speed Trials are fast-approaching, with the muchloved annual event taking place on September 6 on Madeira Drive. It isn’t too late for cars to enter although they need to be submitted by the end of the month. Entry forms are available online at www. brightonandhovemotorclub.co.uk. Portslade Aldridge Community Academy has experienced a remarkable rate of change since it opened in September 2011, when it replaced Portslade Community College – thanks in no small part to a multi-million pound investment. The academy, based in the heart of the Mile Oak community in the west of the city, is sponsored by the Aldridge Foundation and Sir Rod Aldridge, a former pupil, is delighted to have been involved in the revitalisation of the school. January 2014 saw the opening of a brand new campus on the Chalky Road Site. The £12.7million investment programme saw the construction of a new sixth form centre, a new state of the art STEM Centre and science wing, a new theatre, additional ICT facilities, a new community library and Adult Education Centre along with a number of business pods to support the entrepreneurial approach of the academy. This development also allowed the Sixth Form to be reunited with the main school and the academy now has a capacity for 1,200 1116 year olds, with a sixth form of 250 students. In August 2013, PACA celebrated a record set of GCSE results for the school, with 60% of students having achieved the government's benchmark of five or more passes at A* - C grade including maths and English, up 21% percentage points from 39% in 2012. Partly in recognition of this, PACA was voted Brighton School of the Year at The Argus Achievement awards in October 2013. In fact, 2014 has been a hugelysuccessful year for the academy, with a number of additional accolades coming its way. James Fox won Head Teacher of the Year in The Argus Youth
in Action Awards and GCSE results sustaining the academic progress made at the school. In a volatile year results wise, 53% of students secured five or more passes at A* - C grade including English and maths and both the percentage passing the core subjects of English and maths far exceeded the national average. According to management, the academy's foremost aim is to fully prepare students for adulthood and ensure that they are ‘life ready’ by the time they leave. Students are encouraged to become leaders within the school and wider community. They take on a variety of roles such as mentors, prefects, peer-support and charity ambassadors. It is seen as important that students develop a strong sense of social

Green party suspension
Conservative selected
A former treasurer of Brighton and Hove Green Party has been suspended, pending an investigation into allegations that he leaked confidential polling information and made disputed claims about election expenses relating to the successful 2010 campaign by Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion. Disclosure of the suspension of Chris Barclay came as the Green Party said it was also taking legal advice about separate “false and malicious” claims made by Duncan Roy, another former local party treasurer.
Lee Wares has been selected by the local Conservative Party to stand as a candidate in Patcham for next year’s local elections. He will be standing in the seat vacated by Councillor Brian Pidgeon, who is retiring. Mr Wares was born and raised in Brighton and Hove and has lived in the city for all of his 48 years. Geoffrey Theobald, leader of the Conservative Group on the city council said: “I am delighted to have Lee on board.”
responsibility and make a positive contribution to the local and global community. Working in partnership with Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, The Sussex Cricket Board and Sussex County Cricket Club, PACA launched its first Academy Sixth Form courses in 2013 for male and female students looking to build a career in cricket whilst gaining academic qualifications. The success of this has led to similar academies starting in dance, football and science this September. PACA then, it would seem, is an academy on the up.

Local TV is something we should be genuinely excited about Mike Ward @mikewardontv
I’ve always been a fan of local media. We don't sing its praises nearly often enough. In the right hands, it can be sharp, witty, inventive, incisive, challenging, uplifting and inspiring. It can reflect things that directly matter to us, celebrating the places we’re proud to call home, with an unparalleled focus
and personal relevance. Which is why I actually love the idea of the new local TV services springing up across Britain right now (available on YouView and Freeview channel 8, or channel 23 for those in Scotland and Wales). Dedicated local stations are already operating in London, Glasgow, Nottingham, Grimsby and Norwich. And now there’s another exciting one to add to the growing list – Sussex-based Latest TV, which was due to launch in Brighton, Hove and
Worthing yesterday (Thursday). OK, cards on the table, I’m a tiny bit biased. Brighton happens to be my home city. But that’s the whole point, isn’t it? The local channel on our YouView boxes should be the place where we look forward to finding news, sport, chat, entertainment etc. that really, truly touches our lives. I was chatting just the other day to Bill Smith, Latest TV’s infectiously exuberant founder and an influential figure in

Brighton’s music, arts and media world for a good many years, and he told me this was the most exciting project he’d ever been involved in. Of course, he’s bound to say that, but in this case it’s clearly not just hype. Latest TV, like other local stations emerging across the country, has blossomed from comparatively modest online origins into something which epitomises the wealth of opportunities and possibilities digital TV can now offer us. Besides local news and sport, there’ll be comedy, food shows, movie reviews, music, you name it. Budgets may not be epic, but then, as with all the local stations, there’s no shortage of creativity and invention, precious commodities in their own right. And besides, a good idea that’s
been crafted on a low budget is surely still more watchable than a poor one that’s had fortunes thrown at it. Nobody’s pretending local TV will ever drag millions away from Coronation Street, Doctor Who or The X Factor. That’s not the idea. Nor is anyone blind to the challenges it faces. It’s a whole new concept for British TV viewers and it’s bound to take us time to adjust. But as a hub for our communities, and as a breeding ground for new ideas and talent, it’s something we should be genuinely excited about. Mike Ward is TV critic for the Daily Star, Daily Express Saturday, YouView and Drive with Guy Lloyd on Brighton's Juice 107.2.

Alex Phillips and Tom Druitt tied the knot and immediately set about talking up the ward they hope to be elected to represent. The couple have both been chosen by the Green Party to stand in Regency ward and they hope to follow in the footsteps of Councillor Jason Kitcat and Councillor Ania Kitcat, the husband-and-wife team currently representing that area. Speaking shortly after the wedding, Cllr Philips made sure to mention the ward. She said: “It was a wonderful experience to be married to Tom at the Brighton bandstand, such an iconic landmark not just of Brighton but also of the Regency area that we both hope to represent on the council after May next year. “It symbolises the fun and spirit of what we like so much about living here. Thank you to everyone, family and friends, other well-wishers and local residents for all their support. It's really appreciated.”

University confirmed as Samoa Rugby World Cup training base Richard Morris @BrightonIndy The University of Brighton has been chosen as an official team base for the Samoan international rugby team for next year’s world cup. The hard-hitting Samoans will use the university’s Falmer Campus during their stay, including indoor and outdoor training venues, as well as the Freedom Leisure-run Prince Regent swimming pool. The confirmation of the university as a training base is a further boost to Brighton and
Hove after the city secured a pair of world cup games – something which is expected to provide a significant amount of money to the local economy as well as showcasing the city to overseas audiences and visitors. Samoa are down to play at Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex stadium on September 20, the day after rugby heavy-hitters South Africa play at the Seagulls’ stadium. The Springboks have also joined up with the University of Brighton and will train at its Eastbourne campus. Professor Julian Crampton, vicechancellor of the University of
Brighton, said: “We are delighted to be providing training facilities at our campus in Eastbourne for the South African national team and our campus in Falmer for the Samoan national rugby team. “Brighton and Hove and Eastbourne are diverse and convivial communities and we very much look forward to welcoming the Rugby World Cup 2015 teams. “Our state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities are enjoyed by thousands of students, local clubs and residents, and are used to
support elite athletes at national and Olympic-levels. “Their selection by Rugby World Cup 2015 as training bases for two national rugby teams is an exciting opportunity for the university to be part of what is one of the biggest sporting events in the world.” Sarah Hogg, the university’s director of sports and recreation, was equally pleased. She said: “We have invested significantly in sports facilities which benefit our students and the local

communities in which we are based, so it is really great that we can have two of the seeded teams for the tournaments training in our facilities and inspiring both our students and the local community, and really making us all feel a part of this exciting tournament.” Tickets for the Rugby World Cup go on general sale on September 12, with more information online at www.rugbyworldcup.com. The tournament runs between September 18 and October 31 next year.

I can tell that this book divides opinion, but I’m happy to tell you that I loved it - although there were parts that I wish I hadn’t read, and parts that made me ashamed to be human. This book raises some very intelligent questions and is incredibly ambitious in its themes. This was chosen for the book group that I belong to, and I foresee some heated discussions over a bottle of Sauvignon the next time The Harpies meet up. I’m looking forward to it. Oh, and if you’re desperate to find out, have a look around page 77!

Poverty in Britain is shocking - and it is getting even worse Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
Just who is kidding whom, I ask myself. According to just about anybody who speaks for the government, we are all on the way to living in Utopia. Interest rates have never been so low, unemployment is down, and the economy is just inside positive territory. Or so we are led to believe. So why is it then that the reality is not so great? I decided this week to take a proper look and, while I don't have space here to list all my findings, this is a general synopsis. Shockingly, poverty in Britain is getting worse, according to a major new independent study. Currently, 500,000 children live in families who cannot afford to feed them properly; 18 million people cannot afford

The study also dispelled the talked it up with their helpmyth that poverty is caused by to-buy schemes, which fuelled lack of work or by people shirking a shortage of first-time buyer work. It is certainly a factor, but homes. August has seen a record slump in house prices, with a 5.9% drop adequate housing; 12 million people are too poor to engage in common social activities; about 5.5 million adults go without essential clothing. This coincides with about the time we are expecting our first interest rate hike, albeit probably 0.25% for each rise - reaching 2.25% in three years time. Conversations Response to Israel column was like a broken record Robert Brynin (page 11, August 22) is like a stuck record, bewildered because my article [Why I am a Jewish antiZionist] contradicts all his most cherished nostrums. Mr Brynin states that Israel has no interest in attacking Gazans, but only if they ‘have the good sense to oust Hamas.’ Precisely. The people of Gaza will continue to be slaughtered, their homes and hospitals bombed, until they change their representatives! Democracy is fine as long as you choose who we decide! The far-Right in Netanyahu’s government contains open advocates of genocide such as Moshe Feiglin and Ayelet Shaked of Jewish Home, who recently advocated the murder of Palestinian mothers so they don’t give birth to little snakes. Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s foreign minister, has openly expressed the desire to drown thousands of Palestinian prisoners in the Dead Sea. Hamas has never espoused
such views. Maybe one-quarter of Israel’s population should be rendered homeless until such fascists are imprisoned? Mr Brynin objects to the comparison between Israel and Nazi Germany, but when hundreds of violent demonstrators, with the permission of Israel’s Supreme Court, tried to attack a marriage ceremony between a Muslim man and an Israeli Jewess in order to keep the Israeli Jewish race pure, does that not remind him of a certain European country? Over half of Israeli Jews, according to an opinion poll for Israel’s largest daily, Yediot Aharanot, believe that marriage between an Arab man and an Israeli Jewess is ‘national treason’. Apparently Mr Brynin can find no reference to the Holocaust in the IsraeliPalestinian narrative. How about Prime Minister Menachem Begin’s description of PLO leader Yasir Arafat as Hitler in his Beirut bunker during the 1982 Lebanese war? Or Israel’s Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai who in March 2008 promised ‘a little Shoah’, the Israeli word for Holocaust, in March 2008 against the Gazans? The examples are legion but Mr Brynin prefers to clutch at straws. Tony Greenstein

You published a very unbalanced article on August 22: “Pavements are for pedestrians…”. I am writing to pick up one of the issues raised. Your indignant caption “It is high time something was done about anti-social cyclists” accompanied a photo of Air Street in Brighton, where it is legal to cycle. I know this because I have twice successfully challenged the tickets given out there by police/PCSOs who were under the impression that cycling is prohibited at that location. Pedestrians deserve respect and the protection of the law. However, the figures show that cyclists do very little harm to other road users. Pedestrians are more likely to be injured or killed in collision with a motor vehicle than in collision with a cycle.

Sea water investigation
Commuters who usually use the fast-track service to London were disappointed this week after the cancellation of the Gatwick Express. The popular service did not run because of work being done to transform London Bridge. Some of Southern’s services were diverted to Victoria while First Capital Connect’s Thameslink did not operate to, or from, London Bridge. The temporary changes will have inconvenienced many Brighton passengers already upset at increasing prices.
People visiting sick relatives in hospital should be given free or reduced parking, believes a Brighton Conservative. Clarence Mitchell is standing for election in Brighton Pavilion next year and has backed government guidance encouraging reduced parking charges for certain groups. He said: “Charges at the Royal Sussex County Hospital multi-storey car park being just above the daily average of £9.56 in the southeast are in my view already far too high.”
Bathers have been warned to steer clear of West Hove beach while an oil leak at Shoreham Port is investigated. Locals had complained of an oily smell at low tide and managers of the port have carried out extensive work to identify the problem. A spokesman for Ebbsfleet United said: “The club does not tolerate any racism or discrimination and fully supports the efforts of Kick It Out.”
An estimated 800 homes in Kemp Town and Whitehawk suffered power problems on Monday. Brighton Marina, Manor Way and Sussex Square were among the areas hit by power loss at around 9pm in the city’s latest energy problem. Firefighters were called to a substation in Whitehawk amid reports of a bang and smoke but found no evidence of a fire. Some homes experienced problems without suffering total outage. Power was restored within half an hour according to UK Power Networks.

Half a million meters planned Southern Water is fast approaching the recharge season, when its water sources are refilled. Autumn and winter are important seasons for water companies as this is when reservoirs and underground sources – where 70 per cent of the region’s water comes from – are refilled in time for the spring and summer, when demand is much higher. This month, the southeast received its entire month’s rainfall by August 19. As a result, the company’s four reservoirs are in a healthy position. However, in recent years, the government has classified the southeast as an area of serious water stress. This is due to the effects of climate change, with warmer and drier years, alongside the projected housing and population growth. To secure drinking water supplies, Southern Water has produced a 25year Water Resource Management Plan which includes a mains renewal scheme, water efficiency education and a five-year universal metering programme. By 2015 nearly 500,000 meters will have been installed across Sussex, Kent and Hampshire. Meters are being installed because households
on a meter tend to use 10 - 18 per cent less water. The programme has received great support from customers with 85 per cent believing that it is a fairer way to charge for water as households only pay for what they use. With this in mind, Southern Water is encouraging households to make a few small changes in the way they use water to protect the environment and help the majority of people save money on their water and energy bills. Ben Earl, Southern Water’s water efficiency manager, said: “So far, 62% of metered households which have received a bill have seen a reduction averaging £13 a month. This also means that customers’ energy bills are likely to fall because heating water for use in taps, baths and showers makes up around 27% of the average household’s energy bill.
“Customers should visit our website for water-saving tips, videos and discount vouchers.” Tips include: * Limit your shower to four minutes; * Ensure the dishwasher is full before turning it on; * Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth; * Water plants early morning or in the evening when it is cooler as less water is lost to evaporation; * Install a water butt. Southern Water offers various tariffs and support schemes for customers whose bills increase because of metering. These include the Changover Tariff and the Support Tariff. For information about Southern Water’s tariffs or for more detail about water resources in the South East visit: www.southernwater.co.uk.

Brighton is the perfect place for digital culture and innovation to flourish - in spite of and because of its flaws. The Brighton Digital Festival celebrates and exemplifies the diversity of thought and skills that make the digital sector here so exciting. What we mean by digital, the digital age, isn't limited to the media, the technology. It is disruptive change, and explosion of ideas and technologies affecting culture, commerce and politics alike - an age where, faster than ever, anyone anywhere can access knowledge, resources and - most powerfully of all - other minds. Geography is destiny, as Napoleon said. Well our long, thin city - a string of villages and subcultures stretched out along a seafront, shielded from the cultural and economic gravity of London by the South Downs, but close enough for our citizens to go scouting for work, money and ideas - has a destiny to be the birthplace of powerful ideas. Ideas that will make art, businesses and knowledge. All around us are the technologies, ideas and business models that will create huge value for society in the twentyfirst century. Combining and recombining these ideas is what makes innovation so powerful a force in Brighton and in the world. Brighton's strength in this age of ideas is its diversity. Not the buzzword diversity of diluted contemporary political discussion - true, rich, risky, abrasive diversity. Diversity of thought, of ideas, perspectives and skills. Our
diversity is not about consensus, dancing together into a harmonious future - it's a place where ideas and values clash and sometimes connect. From the tension and the friction, come new things - dots get connected, innovation happens. Someone said that Brighton is a culture of extremes. Our local government cycled through Conservative, Labour and Green in the last decade or so. Locals live side-by-side with global citizens; churches and mosques thrive near halls where science and rationalism is celebrated. All compressed into a small, close city. I see this even in the Brighton Digital Festival’s own organisation. Its cornerstones are Wired Sussex and Lighthouse. Very different organisations – the former with a business-promoting, digital sector focus, the latter fixed on digital arts and edge ideas in online culture. The tension and the mix of ideas has created something really innovative – a cacophony of interestingly contrasting, connectable ideas. Festivals of digital I have visited elsewhere can be too easily dominated by marketing, media or commerce – or at the other extreme, drift into excluding, exclusive arts events for insiders. Brighton Digital Festival has inspired me every year – and as it grows so does the number of people who see new ideas, connect dots in new patterns. As the festival grows, so does the ambition and sense of possibility for this city. Antony Mayfield is CEO of Brilliant Noise. Brilliant Noise's conference - Dots - Connecting Ideas - is being held as part of the Brighton Digital Festival on Wednesday, September 3.

Copts: A persecuted religious minority taking refuge in the midst of our city
You go into a shop - perhaps one of the little newsagents in North Street or The Lanes - and you notice the assistant is speaking in Arabic, that a radio or television is tuned to an Arabic station. Or you get into a taxi and notice that the driver looks Middle Eastern, that he has an Arabic accent. And you may get an altogether wrong idea. If you are observant, you may spot a palm-leaf crucifix on the wall behind the counter, above the cigarettes, or a silver one swinging above the windscreen. These people are Copts. They are Christians. They come from Egypt or Sudan, and they are here because of the terrible persecution they have suffered in those countries. The word Copt derives from the Greek word Aegyptos, Egyptian, and the Copts maintain they are the true descendants of the ancient Egyptians, the ones who built the pyramids, the ones who were there long before the Arabs arrived. Their church is one of the most ancient surviving, having been founded, according to tradition, by St Mark the Evangelist in the first century. Mark ended as the first bishop of Alexandria, and during the early Christian centuries Egypt was full of churches and monasteries, of anchorites and desert fathers. St Antony and St Athanasius were Copts. The Coptic church split from the Catholic church in 451, over complex questions of the nature of Christ’s divinity that the average layperson struggles to understand. They have their own pope. Back then, Copts spoke Coptic, the language of the gnostic Gospel of Thomas, found at Nag Hammadi in 1945, and of the gnostic Gospel of Judas, found in an Egyptian
cave in 1978. Though now a dead tongue, it is still used in the church’s liturgy. Though modern Copts speak Arabic, they do not, I think, regard themselves as Arabs; at any rate, one I spoke to - he was a taxi-driver, we had been talking animatedly all the way and when we arrived we sat there, still talking, for a further 20 minutes - spoke deprecatingly of “the Arabs”. When the Arabs invaded Egypt in 641, they were regarded by the Copts, living under Byzantine oppression, as liberators, but that impression soon changed. The Copts have been treated as second-rate citizens in their own country ever since. Persecution has followed persecution, and it continues to this day, with Coptic churches being burned and Copts murdered. There are at least 10 million Copts in Egypt, out of a total population of 80 million, as well as 500,000 in Sudan, with others in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and other African countries. Two out of three Egyptians living in Britain are Christian refugees. Sir Magdi Yacoub, the heart surgeon, is a Copt. Brighton’s first Copt, I was told, arrived from Sudan in the 1970s with next to nothing, and now owns a property empire. The city now has the country’s largest Coptic community outside London, about 5,000, a majority being refugees from the civil wars in Sudan. One sometimes has the impression that half our taxidrivers are Sudanese Copts, while many newsagents and corner shops, formerly the preserve of Asian shopkeepers, seem recently to have been taken over by them. St Mary and St Abraam Coptic Orthodox Church in Davigdor Road, Hove, formerly the redundant St Thomas’s Anglican church, was personally consecrated by Pope Shenouda III in 1994. New library open
An independent councillor has started a petition calling for free drinking fountains to be installed across Brighton and Hove. Cllr Ben Duncan, who was originally elected as a Green councillor, launched the petition online at www.change.org and hopes to get enough backing to encourage the council to act. The petition is asking for “a network of public drinking fountains, at parks and open spaces, including in shopping areas and near beaches, throughout the city”.
A library has opened in Mile Oak which can be used by the local community as well as students from Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA). The facility is the second new library to open in Brighton and Hove this year, following hot on the heels of the one in Woodingdean which launched earlier this summer. It will be open six days a week (Monday to Saturday) and the hope is it acts as a hub for the local community.

Dragon sets up shop as confidence continues to return The Brighton and Hove high street has been given another boost with the news that former Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis is opening a new store in the city. Pathitis, who owns the stationery chain Ryman and homeware specialist Robert Dyas, is launching the latest branch of his successful lingerie store Boux Avenue. The shop, which also stocks swimwear, nightwear and gifts, is opening in Churchill Square next month, with the official ribbon cutting taking place on September 6. Boux Avenue currently has 22 stores nationwide and is known for its unique way of displaying products. The majority of items are in draws, rather than hanging rails and stands. It is the latest new store to open in the city in recent weeks as confidence returns to the city’s high street. A string of restaurants have opened, including Burgers & Cocktails on North Road, and TGI Fridays is transforming the former Post Office in Ship Street. Churchill Square is also thriving, with its revamped façade attracting extra shoppers. For more information on Boux Avenue, visit: www.bouxavenue.com.

Chef takes over Preston Park Tavern kitchen at just 24 Simon Duncan has been appointed as franchisee / head chef at the Preston Park Tavern at the age of just 24. The talented chef was headhunted by Ben Murray, the pub’s general manager, and now takes charge of six kitchen staff and serves to around 500 customers a week. Mr Duncan, who developed his talent as a catering student at City College Brighton and Hove, had previously been head chef at the highly-rated Kemp Town restaurant Sam’s, where he enjoyed three successful years before deciding to join Preston Park Tavern. His new workplace has gone from strength to strength since its refurbishment in March this year, and its general manager is in no doubt Mr Duncan will further enhance its reputation despite his relatively young age. Mr Murray said: “I’d worked with Simon when he was only 18 and I could see he was in a different class to young chefs I’d encountered before. “His passion, dedication and motivation were outstanding and I’d hoped that we would get a chance to work together again. "So, when I took over as general manager at the Preston Park
Tavern, I immediately thought Simon would be the ideal person to run our kitchens. I knew that his attention to detail, understanding of flavours and commitment to using the best ingredients would appeal to our customers. "I’m delighted with the direction the pub is going in and see Simon as being key to our success in the future.” Mr Duncan said: “Becoming a franchisee/head chef has been a massive challenge - completely different to working for someone else. “As well as being head chef, you’re taking on a lot of added responsibilities such as managing and paying your staff, organising supplies and dealing with accounts. “Working in industry has been a rapid learning curve but I’ll always give City College a lot of credit when it comes to my work ethic. I found that I was able to reach a level of maturity at the college because there’s mutual respect between the students and the staff.” Since taking on his new role at the Preston Park Tavern, Mr Duncan has employed two other former City College catering students, Stuart Teague and
Blake Chrysantho, as commis chef and sous chef respectively. He said: “Taking on Stuart and Blake, I could be confident that they’d had the same level of training that I’d had. My tutors had all worked in the industry and were really upfront that it was going to be hard and that you had to put the hours in. I learnt lots from them and they were always there to help. “I was much more inclined to come to City College to learn
a vocational skill rather than going to sixth form college or university because I’m the type of person who concentrates best when I’m enjoying something, and just sitting in a classroom and writing down notes wasn’t for me.” For more information on catering courses at City College, call 01273 667759 or see www.ccb.ac.uk/public/collegelife/catering-and-hospitality.
Holidays can mark a turning point So the summer holidays are drawing to a close and before we know it, it will be back to school, back to work and yes back to the old routine. Not for all of us. As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator August marks the start of one of my busiest times. Some people are surprised when they learn this. They imagine that things wind down for lawyers over the summer. But actually the opposite is true. For a significant number of couples the summer holiday brings about a change, a realisation that either the relationship cannot be fixed or that actually they don’t want to keep trying to make it work. For unhappy couples rather than bringing them together, the summer holiday can be the last straw. Every year I see an increase in the numbers of couples seeking my advice after the holiday period. Time away has not brought them closer together, quite the opposite. It has increased stress between them and led to more arguments. Add in to the mix that for many the holiday will be some sort of test of whether they can get on.
You can see how the holiday can mark a turning point. It’s a sad fact but not really a surprising one.Year on year people are working harder and harder. Worries about job losses and making ends meet mean that often expectations for that precious week away are completely unrealistic. When I first meet new clients after a disastrous holiday they are feeling pretty raw. It’s a sad time but I help them see that by choosing the collaborative approach to ending their relationship they are already on the path to a more positive chapter and better wellbeing. A recent report by Relate found that the quality of people’s relationships has a direct impact on wellbeing. However simply being in a relationship was no guarantee of happiness. In fact the research found that single people felt better about themselves, not just than those in bad or very bad relationships but in so called ‘average’ relationships. The research cites what I tell many of my clients; that it is the quality of the relationship - rather than just the existence of one that matters.

SPECIAL REPORT: The truth about The party Brighton and Hove District Labour Party - which currently has about 1,400 members - held its first citywide meeting in January 2012. Previously, Labour Party members were organised into three separate constituency parties: Hove, Brighton Pavilion, and Brighton Kemptown. Each party was run by a general committee on which sat representatives of local branches and affiliated trade unions; each was responsible, within national Labour Party rules, for its own finances, policies, and procedures; each was accountable directly to a relatively small number of branches. For campaigning purposes connected with city council elections - rather than parliamentary elections - branch delegates were elected to a local government committee. All this changed in the aftermath of the May 2011 council elections, when a poor result meant Labour became the
smallest party on Brighton and Hove City Council. Currently, the Labour Party has 14 councillors; the Green Party has 20; and the Conservative Party has 18. Two are independent: Councillor Ben Duncan and Councillor Christina Summers, both formerly of the Green Party. Since the hasty creation of the Brighton and Hove District Labour Party - commonly referred to as the City Party - the day-to-day running of the party has been in the clenched hands of a 10-member executive committee (EC), with additional places reserved for Warren Morgan, the leader of the Labour Group and the three parliamentary candidates. Trade unions have no automatic representation. In what is now one of the biggest Labour Party units in the country - serviced by three paid officers and with three separate offices for its parliamentary candidates - all-member meetings are held only every two or three months. In contravention of party rules, agendas are not sent out to all
Martin Perry and Cllr Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour Group
members at least seven days before all-member meetings. At these meetings - the next of which is on Saturday, September 6 - motions from branches are discouraged as “divisive”; debates are condemned as “a turn-off”; membership reports are infrequent; finance reports are even rarer. Unsurprisingly, attendance is poor; rarely does the number of attendees exceed 60 or 70; even annual meetings, which directly elect the EC, attract no more than 130. At annual meetings, the names of people who nominate themselves for election to the EC are not circulated in advance; the number of votes cast for each candidate is not announced. With 54 council seats up for grabs in 21 wards, the City Party comprises 18 local branches: five in Hove; seven in Brighton Pavilion; six in Brighton Kemptown (including Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, along with "Meridian", encompassing East Saltdean, Telscombe, and Peachaven - outside the city council boundaries). Significantly, some of Labour's safest seats have some of the smallest branch parties: Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch has only about 30 members - of whom only 15 were eligible to vote in the recent selection of ward candidates, according to Harris Fitch, a failed Labour hopeful. Some branches meet only rarely, including East Brighton - currently represented by Cllr Warren Morgan and Councillor Gill Mitchell, the Labour Group whip. Even branches such as Preston Park, the biggest in the city, now meets only occasionally and perfunctorily. At best, membership figures for many branches have either stagnated or are suffering a chronic decline; it is not uncommon for little more than a handful of members to attend branch meetings.

Malcolm Powers Regional director @malcpowers malcolm_powers@labour.org.uk Since 2006, southeast regional director of the Labour Party, based in Reading; for the previous four years, he served as deputy regional director A keen cyclist, ice-hockey fan, and a music-lover, he describes himself as "a geek" and "Labour through and through". Former colleagues, however, describe him as a ditherer; "Malcolm’s indecision is never final," said one.
As a result, it is easy for the EC to manipulate procedures and policies to suit their own electoral ends. With many grassroots members reduced to footsoldiers - repeatedly urged by email to deliver leaflets in which they have no input, to canvass by telephone or door-to-door to identify possible supporters, and to raise funds - the all-powerful EC is increasingly regarded by many (not just in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean) as a secretive and undemocratic "politburo". In the eyes of such critics, a small group of largelyunaccountable officers is interested mainly in ensuring their favoured "approved" candidates are selected in the party's most winnable seats. Even if that means over-riding the wishes of rank-and-file branch members, such as those in the now-disenfranchised Moulsecoomb and Bevendean.
Melanie Davis City Party chair Took over as chair last year from the poorly-performing Adrian Morris, who has since been selected as one of the Labour Party candidates in Queen's Park ward. Elected a councillor on May 3 2007, she came third behind two Conservative Party candidates in Regency, with 1,231 votes (9.9%). She lost her seat when the Green Party came to power on May 5 2011, coming fourth with 1,755 votes (11%). Ms Davis was re-elected as chair earlier this year.

Cllr Leigh Farrow leigh.farrow@brighton-hove.gov.uk After the failure in 2007 of Lis Telcs - the partner of Cllr Morgan who came sixth with 848 votes (10%) - he was elected on May 5 2011, when he came second in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, behind Mo Marsh, with 1,666 votes (15%) A veteran party member of more than 30 years, he was previously active in politics in west London before returning to Brighton. He lives in Woodingdean.

Cllr Gill Mitchell Labour Group deputy leader and whip gill.mitchell@brighton-hove.gov.uk A councillor in East Brighton since 2003, she is a stalwart of the Labour Group. With a mastery of many issues, she does not suffer fools gladly and knows a number of councillors over the years have not been up to the job. Senior figures in the GMB, local party funders, blamed her for Labour's poor results in 2011. She stood down as leader of the Labour Group in April last year. According to her enemies, she is still pulling the strings.
Cllr Warren Morgan Labour Group leader @warrenmorgan warren.morgan@brighton-hove.gov.uk A serious individual with a love of polling data and a full-time politician, he is closely associated with the postBlairite Progress faction (see adjacent article). His mantra is that Labour "should not promise anything it can't deliver”. It was Cllr Morgan who announced in March that Martin Perry, the former chief executive of Brighton and Hove Albion, would stand for Labour sparking widespread suspicions that he might be parachuted into Moulsecoomb and Bevendean. In the end, he was given a slot in Hangleton and Knoll.

A marker of Key Stage 2 tests and an examiner in English for Edexcel/ Pearson, she is an associate hospital manager with Sussex Partnership Trust. She lives in Queen's Park Road, Brighton. Sits on: city council's housing committee, on which she has replaced Cllr Farrow; health and wellbeing overview and scrutiny committee; scrutiny panel on social value.
This episode is not about “conduct unbecoming". Ray Metcalfe, a long-time Labour Party member and resident of Moulsecoomb, pinned precisely the context of the persecution of Councillor Farrow in comments reported by Brighton & Hove Independent. “Here we go again,” Mr Metcalfe said in an email to party colleagues. “After the slurs against Anne Meadows when she finished her stint as mayor, we had the farcical election for the prospective candidates for the Moulsecoomb and Bevendean ward, where it was obvious the executive committee was trying to shoehorn in their preferred choice at the expense of Mo Marsh. Now it is Leigh Farrow in the firing line." The hit list of targets irking the City Party leadership has expanded to include the whole of the Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch - whose treasonable offence apparently was to show solidarity with their councilor, against an action of such grossly-prejudicial deselection without trial as to be reminiscent of a 17th-century witch-hunt. What conduct, the seditious ward members dared to ask, was so abject as to justify the effective expulsion of an elected Labour councillor? Cllr Farrow admits to swearing in the presence of two party colleagues. The paper-thin pretext cited in the letters of indictment and the extreme nature of the penalty decreed, after the ward’s refusal to concede to summary justice, suggests an ulterior motive. Even if a few salty profanities were uttered among comrades

in a private meeting, in a time of budget cuts deeply affecting the residents of Labour wards, this disproportionate reaction to a minor infraction of protocol is an exercise of arbitrary authority by a leadership cabal in Brighton and Hove District Labour Party. Much more serious than the alleged offence is the arrogant abuse of power by the party’s executive committee as part of an ongoing campaign to marginalise all internal opposition and to monopolise decision-making, policy positions, and the selection of candidates. The real story in this autarchic de-selection of a popular sitting councillor is the bloodless coup by the Progress faction dubbed by the GMB as a party within a party - whose members dominate the leadership of the City Party. The Militant Tendency was ousted with gusto by Neil Kinnock in 1985. Some 30 years on, coming from the right wing rather than the far left, the Progress faction is a selfdeclared militantly "moderate" tendency. My objection - and that of many others frustrated with the quietism of the present shadow front bench, and to the influence of this New Labour rump is that their idea of progress is more of the same, with only marginal shifts to accommodate their stewardship of the reins of power. At the local level, "Progress Labour" are not doctrinally opposed to privatisation or outsourcing, or to swingeing budget cuts to essential services. Which is to say they are in favour. Nor, regrettably, are they committed to defend social housing or resist the general
assault on living standards, or workplace protections, or speak up for state investment in education and social care and infrastructure that would promote real growth in the real economy. It is fair and accurate to suppose that most of the people around Progress are truly conservative. The prototype of the City Party is a business model of so-called "flat" or frictionless structures, the purpose of which is to smooth the centralisation of all meaningful authority and to remove any and all residual pockets of resistance through the imposition of unitary functions. Applied to a political organisation, the democratic centralist logic – otherwise known as Stalinism - is plain enough: remove or disempower the branches, taking all instruments of patronage to the centre. The stakes for Labour members in Brighton and Hove are high. Nobody on the Left can want another rightwing government next year. Only slightly worse than that prospect, however, is a minority Labour administration married to the reactionary nostrums of the past and too timid to root out the rot of neo-liberalism. Toward the possibility of a popular mandate for a rededicated commitment to social democracy, the citywide machinery of Brighton and Hove Labour is one obstacle that should be destroyed and replaced by a properly collectivist alternative. Such as the one wrecked by the current leadership in 2012. David Butler is vice-chair of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Branch Labour Party.

Be a neighbour even if you don’t own your own home!! Over the last few months, more and more financial commentators have talked about how the lack of affordable homes, new or second-hand in the UK, especially in the southeast, could lead to a slump in first time buyers, as young people decide that, Help to Buy and Shared Ownership schemes notwithstanding, they would prefer to rent. The causes are a mixture of high property prices, tightening mortgage criteria making borrowing more difficult, and increasing interest rates. Allied to these factors, we are in the lead-up to an election (which typically leads to a ‘wait and see’ attitude with potential buyers and sellers) and finally, we have the ever present issue of high rents leading to difficulty for potential buyers in saving up deposits. In isolation, these factors are
not critical, but together, it leads to insecurity about pitching forward into the marketplace. No doubt we are living in a new world in Brighton and Hove, with many more renters than normal, with people changing jobs more often and with more self-employed people than ever before. I have written about the change from the ‘job for life’ mentality, where people would plan their future and make fairly safe assumptions as to their life path, to the much more shortterm approach to planning their future that people are developing now, to deal with the vagaries of the global and local economy we now inhabit. As I said, the number of largescale employers has dropped dramatically and the upsurge in one-person band companies, working out of a cafe in the North Laine or Kemp Town, is
remarkable. These people are much more likely to rent than to buy. They want the flexibility of not being tied to a mortgage and not having the responsibility and costs of looking after the structure of a house or flat, just keeping it clean and tidy during the tenancy. Of course, this leads to a different approach to ‘community’, but we all need a real community in our streets. So, people if you want to belong to a neighbourhood do the Zocalo thing this weekend. Sunday 31st August is Zocalo Day 2014. You can make it happen in your street: www.brightonzocalo.com Enjoy! Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. Paulbonett@bonetts.co.uk Twitter: @bonettpa

Food and Drink Festival director picks highlights Nick Mosley @brightonfood
With the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival’s Autumn Harvest just around the corner, festival director Nick Mosley picks out some unmissable events. We’ve always been - and will always be - a champion of the local, seasonal produce but over recent years we’ve been introducing an international element into the festival primarily through the bonds that we’ve made through our International Chef Exchange initiative. This September we’ll be joined by many of our colleagues from across the world including Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, France and Australia some will be hosting events with us whilst others will simply be along to enjoy the festival events. A highlight of this year is A Taste of Sicily (Friday, September 5, 7pm, tickets £38 in advance including food and drink) which will see our friends from the Nivarata festival in Acireale join us for a showcase of Sicilian food and drink. Seb Cole from Boho Gelato will be joined by Nicola Scaccianoce and Fulvio Masssimino, making traditional and experimental frozen granita live. Henry from Butlers Wine Cellar
Coffee Chronicles Soya beans are little legumes that can be turned into just about anything. Well, within reason. When they’re soaked and ground up with water, soya milk is created. That doesn’t sound overlyappetising, but detailing cows’ milk production would sound much worse. Plant milk has been available in
will be presenting five Sicilian wines whilst there’ll be lots of food to enjoy. I think we have a few surprises up our sleeve too including a limoncello made right here in Sussex by Sarah at Blackdown Spirits. It’s going to be a really fun and varied night, and it’s certainly one I’m really looking forward to. Keeping with the A Taste of theme, we have A Taste of Game wine dinner at Hotel du Vin on Wednesday, September 10 (tickets £65 in advance). This five-course dinner created especially for the festival by chef Rob Carr features game birds, rabbit and venison - all locally sourced, sustainable game meats… and very tasty too. A new food and drink venture will be opening in Brighton later in September - Silo - however we’ve got a special preview event on Friday, September 12. The Roots of Silo: A Taste of Western Australia (tickets £55 in advance) is a collaboration between Silo’s head chef and proprietor Douglas McMaster and chef Matt Stone who we’re flying in all the way from the Margaret River region of Australia. A sixcourse dinner of ‘pure flavours’ will be accompanied by matched wines from Western Australia. This really is an exciting, one-off event for anyone who loves great food and drink. With each festival we host a food trail and on Sunday, September 14

we’re heading off to London Road which has experienced a huge rejuvenation in its food and drink offering over the past year. Our food trail (£10 tickets in advance) starts at Carters Appliances by the viaduct where Kieron from Beach BBQ will be cooking up piggy pops, accompanied by a glass of wine. Then trailers will follow a map around ten participating venues including La Choza at the Hare & Hounds, Emporium, Moksha Caffé, MEATliquor, Alcampo Lounge and more, sampling tasty bites from their menus. Our food trails are always incredibly popular - it’s not every day that you get the opportunity to eat at ten restaurants for a tenner! We have many more evening ticketed events at restaurants and bars including Drakes, 64 Degrees, Terre à Terre and Brighton Rocks to name but a few. However, the core of the festival is always our two anchor outdoor weekends, both of which are absolutely free entry for everyone to enjoy. The larger of the two is the Sussex & The World Market on Hove Lawns (Saturday, September 6 - Sunday,
after Coca-Cola is anything other than Diet Coke. The first soya milk boom began in around 1980 and it seems that 2014 has seen another spike in demand. It’s similar to cows’ milk insofar as it’s a “complete protein” and is fortified with every vitamin ever created. The similarities end there. Unlike cows’ milk, soya milk has very little saturated fat and absolutely no cholesterol. Soya milk should be the dieters’ wonder drug, leaving skinny milk by the way side. It shouldn’t be a

It really is going to be a great weekend of local and international food and drink, and there’s something for everyone. The following weekend sees our Big Sussex Market (Saturday, September 13 to Sunday, September 14, free entry) featuring only businesses based here in our county - growers, producers and restaurateurs. That awkward moment when a friend, relative, colleague, acquaintance or even a complete stranger shares with you not just more than you needed to know, but more than you ever wanted to. You’ve been there, right? Well, I have a hypothesis: I think that those with children have been there more often than most. Something about someone becoming a parent flips a switch for other people, especially fellow parent types. Long-suppressed stories come out of the woodwork; friends recount things in a level of detail that you’ve hitherto been spared. You didn’t know what you were missing - and not in a good way. You know the sort of thing - a tale about the abrupt conclusion to Susie and Dave’s day out with little Poppy at the theme park that previously ended with a knowing smile now comes with a full on description of the scent, colour, and consistency of Poppy’s vomit as it wound its way into the hair of the unfortunate lady in front of her on the rapids. And you’ve been promised a look at the accompanying photos. It’s like the fact that you’re both bringing up another human being opens up a whole new channel (and level) of communication. The delight that appeared on friends’ faces when they heard you were expecting wasn’t just about the prospect of playdates. In that moment ,you became fair game, an unwitting confidante and easy prey. Like all good hypotheses, this one is, of course, propped up by rafts of (admittedly anecdotal) evidence. It’s not just folks like Susie and Dave, it’s people like Paul - our very real friend who sent us a very real picture of his son’s fairly horrific first poo, just weeks before we were to be facing something similar ourselves. Preparing us for what was to come? Maybe. Over-sharing? Definitely.

Travel Enjoy a taste of the Rhine with trip to Cologne Richard Morris @BrightonIndy List the best destinations for a European weekend city break and it is unlikely Cologne will feature particularly highly. Paris? Yes. Barcelona? Of course. Rome, Berlin, Milan, Madrid? Each will be someone’s favourite short-stop destination. But don’t let its absence from the well-established weekend break list fool you. Cologne is a wonderful city which is well worth a visit. Germany in general has, in recent years, enjoyed a surge in popularity among British tourists. Driven in part by the blossoming football tourism built on the country’s thriving and affordable Bundesliga brand, Germany is becoming more and more an attractive holiday choice. Disgruntled football fans are heading to all corners of Germany to watch cut-price matches, on a terrace and with a beer in hand. In fact, recent estimates suggest as
many as 1,000 supporters head to Germany from Britain on any given match day. What that has meant is that there are increasing numbers of people coming back to Blighty with tales of picturesque cities boasting tasty food and housing underappreciated culture. Add those glowing references to the availability of cheap, relatively short flights from Gatwick and Heathrow and Germany is no longer the bestkept secret in city breaks. Cologne, for example, deserves to be far more appreciated this side of the Channel. It is little more than a short hop away from Gatwick by plane, with return flights available for around £80 and the cost of accommodation reasonable, even during peak times. As a city, Cologne represents a wonderful mishmash of cultures. Near enough to Belgium and France to retain a degree of influence but still unmistakably Germanic, it is the fourth-largest city in Germany. Cologne has established itself as a renowned media and new

Here at #PGT we want brands to work with nature. I met Shaloam Hodge in person a few Fridays ago when I gravitated to her flower-bedecked Shaloah stall at the refurbished Open Market in London Road. I have now used three of her lovely handmade, locally-formulated products. Everything is packaged in recyclable material (coloured glass and a natural cotton bag) to reduce environmental impact. The finest natural plant oils
are perfectly blended to improve skin texture and invigorate your mood. I particularly like the beautiful fragrance combinations; derived from purely natural essential oils and nothing else. No harsh preservatives are used, just colloidal silver to heal and support the skin. It is particularly good for psoriasis and problem skins -
technology hub, the result of which is a young, vibrant population which sustains the city’s artistic and cultural scene. Among its many impressive artistic offerings is the Museum Ludwig, which is home to the third-largest collection of Picassos in the world. Classical works sit comfortably alongside a hefty gathering of Pop Art, including pieces from Warhol, and more avant-garde paintings as well as pieces from Expressionists like Max Beckmann and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Cologne is also a cauldron of fine cuisine, with dozens of restaurants found either along the banks of the Rhine or cradled further in the midst of the city’s charming streets serving up traditional German food at reasonable prices. As well as food, Cologne also boasts its own beer, the delightfully hoppy Kölsch. Unique to Cologne, Kölsch is less bitter than the average German beer. Gaffel Kölsch is particularly recommended. A trip to Cologne without sampling local food is one wasted. The same can be said of a visit to what is the city’s undoubted most-impressive attraction: the Dom. Cologne Cathedral was said to be the tallest building in the world at one time and is believed
which really inspired Shaloam when she first helped her son Leon through a severe case of baby eczema. (Her natural eczema cream is £8.95 for 60ml by the way). I started with a face cream. The rose and frankincense anti-ageing moisturiser comes in a red bottle to regenerate and nourish. It goes on like a reassuringly thick cold cream which conditions as it soaks in. This is more an overnight treatment than an under make-up morning line. I really love the smell from organic sunflower seed oil, avocado and organic coconut oil, radish root (a new one on me), plus apricot kernel oil, evening primrose oil, argan nut
Cologne Cathedral is the city’s most recogniseable attraction to be the final resting place of the Three Wise Men. It dominates the Cologne skyline and is an impressive, almost overpowering gothic presence. It is, however, best appreciated from inside or, for those without a fear of heights, from the vantage point afforded by its 533 stephigh tower. Be warned though: the climb is pretty unforgiving on the calves. Cologne is perhaps best-visited in the run-up to Christmas
elderberry fruit extract, Vitamin E oil, frankincense oil, rosa damascena oil and silver micro particles -£16.95 for 50ml. The Shaloah Olive Squalane and Vitamin E Anti-Wrinkle Serum is refreshing and clean smelling. It absorbs deep into the skin for ‘a natural facelift’ to promote cell regeneration. Each ingredient is delicious, and the little green bottle lasts for ages. Even if you have never used a facial oil before, I’d say give this a try at £12.95 for 15ml. The final fragrance was my favourite; Orange, Ylang Ylang and Cedarwood Bath & Body Oil is a luxurious pamper to moisturise the whole body. Try it neat or add droplets to the bath for a gorgeous steamy
when the city is taken over by the famous Christmas markets although it also benefits from an array of festivals, carnivals and events throughout the year. You may not have ever considered it before, but Cologne is one of Europe’s mostwelcoming cities and one fully deserving of a few days of your time when next you feel like a short break. Just remember to come back and tell your friends.

Straight from the commentary box Manchester United could afford to buy Di Maria for £60 million, but whether they could afford not to. The management at the Amex certainly don’t have those resources at their disposal but have utilised a few different routes to the club for new players. Pay the money, Stockdale, Colunga and Baldock. That’s how the 80’s advert went for the answer to a throbbing temple. You could have deleted Anadin and insert Albion on Tuesday night as the Seagulls battled past a classy Swindon side in the League Cup. Champion jockey Richard Hughes hopes to stride towards another title at Brighton on Sunday and Monday. Hughes has scored an impressive 11 winners in only 23 rides at Race Hill this season. And the flat superstar is keeping his fingers crossed he can improve the strike rate at the Gatwick Airport Family Fun Day and the following afternoon on route to claiming the track’s jockey crown for this year. It could prove compensation as injury at the start of the season put him behind in his bid to secure a third successive national championship. Hughes is currently just four wins ahead of William Carson, the grandson of the legendary Derby-winning jockey with the
same name, at Brighton. The 41-year-old, who won the national pilot’s championship in 2012 and 2013, told Brighton & Hove Independent: “Hopefully I can ride a few winners on Sunday and Monday. It’d be nice if I end up top jockey there. I like Brighton. Always have done. “I would put my good strike rate at Brighton down to a good agent who gets me the right horses. Horses who can travel well.” His main trainer, Richard Hannon Junior, specialises in buying yearlings and racing them the following year. Hannon, in his first full-year since taking over the licence from his father Richard at the Herridge Racing Stables in Wiltshire, is in line to lift Brighton’s 2014 trainer’s crown. He has scored eight wins from 21 entries, seven of them twoyear-olds. Hughes, who won the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks last year, said:
“Hopefully we’ll ride a few more winning two-year-olds.” The Family Fun Day will feature a soccer skills session with Albion in the Community, the charity arm of the Seagulls. The course will also stage a Mascot Race and supply fairground activities. Doors open at noon with the first of seven races at 2pm. Meanwhile, Brighton Challenge Cup winner Barwick has repeated history. The horse trained by Angmering handler Lady Herries, guided home in the Cup at this month’s three-day Brighton Festival by Cam Hardie, has won the Amateur Derby at Epsom. Gentleman amateur rider Mr R Birkett was in the saddle. Last year. Beacon Lady, handled by William Knight, a neighbour of Lady Herries, performed the same double. And, coincidently, Knight’s horse won on the same card.

Match preview: Brighton and Hove Albion vs Charlton Athletic
Hyypiä has tough attacking choices to make ahead of Charlton visit Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Sami Hyypiä faces his first genuine selection headache since joining Brighton and Hove Albion after the Seagulls added two new strikers to their squad. Adrian Colunga, who arrived from Spanish club Getafe, signed in time to play a starring role in Brighton’s 4-2 Capital One Cup win at Swindon Town. The 29-year-old, who joined for an undisclosed fee, scored a goal, won one of two penalties converted by Jake ForsterCaskey, and set up Rohan Ince’s stunning opener. That performance, however, did not stop the Seagulls from splashing out an estimated £2 million on Sam Baldock after his former club Bristol City finally admitted defeat in their efforts to hold onto their chief goalgrabber. Having already added Chris O’Grady to his squad earlier in the summer, Hyypiä must now decide which of his four senior strikers to start with when the Albion welcome Charlton Athletic to the Amex tomorrow (Saturday). Craig Mackail-Smith, fresh from an impressive goal-scoring turn last weekend in the win over Bolton Wanderers, will surely expect to start, meaning Baldock could have to temporarily makedo with a place on the bench. Whoever the Finn picks, the Albion’s attacking options look far healthier than when the season got underway with the Seagulls having sold talismanic striker Leo Ulloa to Leicester City for a club record fee.

‘‘
We knew that Swindon were a good team but I was a bit surprised at how good they were. They played some good stuff tonight and made it very difficult for us but of course I am very happy we are in the next round and not so happy that we had to play 120 minutes. “It was a good start for us that during one of our attacks we scored. It was a difficult game but I am very happy with the work rate of the players. “Maybe we could have been more professional and kept the score at 3-1 and not got sloppy, allowing them to get a second goal, then the end would have been a bit more relaxed but I am very happy.”

Charlton Athletic, though, have their own attacking menaces intent on taking tomorrow’s match by the scruff of the neck. The Addicks have undergone a spell of rapid transformation since appointing Bob Peeters as manager. And they have enjoyed a strong start to the season, registering an encouraging two wins and two draws from their opening four games. Star of the show so far has been Angolan striker Igor Vetokele. The hitman has managed three goals and a single assist in the league this campaign and has shown signs of fulfilling the potential he displayed as a young player at FC Copenhagen. He should certainly pose more of a threat to the Albion’s
back four than either the Leeds United or Bolton attacks, both of who were comfortably shackled by the Seagulls back line. In defence Lewis Dunk should continue alongside Gordon Greer after the pair showed further signs of a blossoming partnership last Saturday at the Amex. Greer particularly has been in superb form this season and his experience looks like teasing the best out of Dunk. The only other real selection dilemma facing Hyypiä is who to play right back. Inigo Calderon has played well while Bruno has been used to fill in midfield gaps but the return of Crofts coupled with the loan signing of Gary Gardner could allow Bruno to revert back to full back.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s improved form has coincided with the arrival of season-long loanee João Teixeira from Premier League heavyweights Liverpool. The Portuguese playmaker has plundered two goals in his first three Albion outings, including the match-winner against Bolton Wanderers last weekend. As well as impressing individually, Teixeira also looks capable of getting the best out of his teammates. GOALS*
