Tory candidate: My US jail hell after arrest in FBI arms 'sting' Exclusive Greg Hadfield and Frank le Duc @BrightonIndy In a convoy of 4x4s heading out of Las Vegas, Lee Wares thought he was on his way to a tradeshow event at a training range just beyond the city limits. Suddenly, he was dragged from his vehicle by an eight-strong FBI SWAT team. Four machine-guns were held to his head. It was the beginning of a nightmare that still haunts Mr

Wares. For 32 days, he was moved around in shackles from prison to prison in the United States. It took two years for him to prove he was the innocent victim of what turned out to be a huge - and ultimately doomed - FBI operation known as The Africa Sting. Unbeknown to the successful Brighton businessman, he had been lured to Nevada as part of a fake $15 million deal to arm the presidential guard of the Omar Bongo regime in the West African nation of Gabon.

Makeover for i360 site

The fake deal had been created by the American Department of Justice and run by the FBI. Mr Wares - now 48 and a Conservative Party candidate for Patcham - was snared by the lies of an American businessman caught breaking anti-bribery laws. Today, for the first time, Mr Wares tells in his own words how he survived a terrifying journey through the judicial system of the United States. The Africa Sting, see page 20

Shoplifting steadily increasing across Brighton and Hove Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

Shoplifting from business in Brighton and Hove has increased steadily over the past four years, recently obtained figures prove. The total number of thefts from city shops has risen each year from 1,832 in 2010 to 2,028 in 2013 - representing an overall increase of more than 10%. Last year, however, saw a drop in the number of incidents officially considered “solved” by Sussex Police to 1,053 - the lowest rate of the last four years, with 1,176 solved in 2012, 1,138 in 2011 and 1,126 in 2010. The figures were revealed in a response to a Freedom of Information Act request, which

also included a breakdown of what kind of goods were stolen since 2010. Among the items listed were computer equipment, musical instruments, toys, sweets and, in September 2010, even a goldfish. The list also included food and charity collection boxes. A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said work was on-going to tackle the problem. They said: “Brighton neighbourhood policing and Safe in the City teams have been working with the business community and the Brighton & Hove Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP) in relation to business crime. “Information is shared on how better to protect themselves and also concerning suspects and those caught offending. “With the work with BCRP and

the Mary Portas Pilot Scheme in the London Road area of the town, shoplifting is being more widely-reported. “Thefts in shops are predominantly reliant on people being caught at the time, recognised by witnesses and/or identified from CCTV. Sharing and receiving details with businesses goes a long way to help identify persons, however, it is not always the case that a positive identification is made or the suspects are caught on CCTV. “We will continue to work closely with the businesses and BCRP, sharing information and details, targeting those intent on stealing within our city.” Frank le Duc owns local news website www. brightonandhovenews.org.

Wiggins - Tour of Britain confirmation boost Sir Bradley Wiggins has confirmed he will defend his title and compete in this year’s Friends Life Tour of Britain cycle race - meaning maximum crowds should now flock to see the event in Brighton.

The race comes to Brighton and Hove on September 13 and the news that the hugely-popular former Olympic champion will be among the peloton of riders is likely to see thousands of people line the city’s streets to cheer on the cycling hero. Wiggins was the first Briton to win the iconic Tour de France race and in cycling terms is pure box office. And the fact he will be crossing the stage finish line on Madeira Drive has come as a boost to Brighton and Hove City Council, which expects the race to generate as much as £3 million for the local economy. Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the city’s economic development and culture committee,

Campaign goes down a storm with Darth Vader

said: “This is a fantastic boost for the race and the city. The ‘Wiggo’ factor will make the Tour of Britain stage finishing in Brighton a must-see event. “We’re expecting thousands to line the route in Sussex and the city will be showcased to an international audience. Last year’s race recorded a net visitor spend of £3 million per stage so it will be significant for our visitor economy and a wonderful addition to the events we host throughout the year.” The stage seven leg of the tour, which leaves from Camberley, Surrey at 10am, takes in a 140 mile journey encompassing West Sussex, East Sussex and finally entering Brighton where it will culminate on Madeira Drive between 3 and 4pm. The final stage of the race takes place in London the following day. It is hoped seeing star riders close-up will encourage more locals to take to the saddle themselves.

NHS mixed response

British Cycling has linked up with two of Brighton and Hove’s cycling clubs to offer a team competition for young people on Madeira Drive ahead of the Tour of Britain stage finish on Saturday, September 13. Local Go-Ride clubs VC Jubilee and Preston Park YCC will take part in eight races for different age groups from midday. The hour-long slot will feature under-eights and under-10s going in a skills relay before older children race in a series of sprint eliminators.

A documentary on the Venezuela’s food revolution is being shown tonight (Friday) at 7pm at Seven Bees Café in St George’s Church, St George’s Road, Kemp Town. The venue has teamed up with Food Sovereignty Sussex and Left Unity Brighton and Hove to organise the event and the screening will be following by a discussion. The event also sees the launch of St George's Church's new community food garden, and a new residents’ food composting scheme. Entry is free.

The NHS trust which runs the Royal Sussex County Hospital has received mixed results from a patient-led assessment. Results of a Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) were published this week following inspections of the trust’s numerous facilities. The trust scored above average for food and hydration, just shy of the national average for cleanliness but not so well in the field of privacy, dignity and well-being or condition, maintenance and appearance of the environment.

Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, came face to face with the Dark Side while campaigning. Ms Lucas was gathering support for a campaign calling for more substantial action to tackle climate change by asking passers-by to pose for a photograph with a giant heart. Unbeknown to Ms Lucas, however, a table-top sale for Star Wars fans was taking place just down the street - hence the interest from Darth Vader and his stormtrooper friends. Sadly for Ms Lucas, Mr Vader and his troops are probably not registered to vote in this galaxy.

Barefoot runner’s 24-hour challenge A runner is hoping to raise thousands of pounds for charity this weekend - by running barefoot round Preston Park Velodrome for 24-hours. Joe Addison is no stranger to Herculean tasks having previously run eight marathons – seven barefoot - including one which he topped off with 1,707 gruelling burpees. His ambitious 24-hour challenge begins at 1pm tomorrow (Saturday) and by the end he hopes to have run the equivalent of almost four marathons having set a target of 105 miles round the 579 metre track. Mr Addison, who works at a fitness studio in Castle Street, is known for his fundraising efforts and has been raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support – the charity which will benefit from his run - for the last three years in memory of his father Roy who died from cancer in 2010. His father was a longterm supporter of Macmillan

and Mr Addison saw first-hand the vital job the charity does in supporting cancer sufferers and their families. He said: “During the 24 hours, I'll be eating roughly every 60 minutes - I will try and consume carb and protein rich foods as well as electrolyte drinks and sweet and salty snacks. Basically whatever I'm craving. “My lovely wife Jenna will be on hand to help throughout the challenge and the cricket club has kindly said I can use their facilities. “When it comes to my fundraising target, officially, I haven't got one but, unofficially, would like to get a minimum of £1,000 if I possibly can. “It goes without saying that Macmillan staff do an incredible job caring for people and their families who are affected by cancer and I am so proud to raise money to try to support their hugely important work.” Mr Addison can be sponsored online at: www.justgiving.com/ joeaddison2014.

Freerunners arrested

Brighton Rock tribute

A group of freerunners were wrongly-arrested after being mistaken for burglars. Police were called to a property in Freshfield Road when a resident raised the alarm after seeing a man climbing down a ladder. Three men were arrested but it turned out they were not breaking into homes but were instead freerunning across local rooftops. They were released without charge but given some advice by officers about how to avoid similar confusion in the future.

Cows cause trouble

Armed police were deployed in the North Laine amid reports a woman was threatening to shoot people from a balcony in Tichborne. Police were called to the flat at around 8pm on Sunday night and while they did not find the woman two men were detained. A search of the flat unearthed two toy guns - one of which matched the description of a pistol given to police. Both have been seized. Nobody was hurt.

Pub chain Wetherspoons could be set to open a new bar on London Road. The company is believed to be looking into opening a pub in the recently-rebuilt Co-op building. It was demolished and rebuilt with accommodation for 350 students but with substantial commercial space available on the ground floor. It is that space which is believed to be interesting Wetherspoons. London Road is enjoying something of a renaissance, with a number of new restaurants opening recently.

A herd of cows gave their farmer the slip and went for a walk down towards a busy seafront road. As many as 40 cows popped up on Roedean Way, near Roedean Road, and looked to be heading for the A259 on Saturday at around midday – when the clifftop road was at its busiest. Police were called and a farmed from nearby Coombe Farm rounded up the animals thankfully before the herd managed to disrupt the traffic too severely.

Cycling in the city – a view from the saddle Becky Reynolds

AfterBrighton&HoveIndependent columnist Mike Holland criticised the city’s cyclists, we decided to ask a regular bike rider for an alternative view. Becky Reynolds explains what it is like to cycle in the city. Brighton and Hove has made

excellent progress in making the streets more cycle-friendly, e.g. with lower speed limits, the Lewes Road scheme, the Seven Dials roundabout and exemptions for cyclists from one-way streets. The Valley Gardens improvements will provide better access to the city and the coast, and hopefully a redesign of the offputting Aquarium Roundabout. However, most journeys in the city and beyond will at least for some part require road users to get on together using the current road

network. Sixty-one per cent of people agree that “it is too dangerous for me to cycle on the roads". It is true, however, that the health benefits of cycling outweigh the risks, and the more people who cycle, the safer it gets. There are incorrect assumptions about cycling which can encourage unsafe behaviour. For example, riding in the middle of the road is not wrong. It is recommended by the Department for Transport (DfT),

After

which says you should “ride central on narrow roads” and “ride a door’s width from parked cars”. Sticking too close to the kerb on narrow roads can encourage drivers to overtake when there isn’t enough room. Riding next to parked cars risks a collision with a car door inadvertently flung open into the rider’s path. Cyclists also need space to avoid potholes. If a rider is thrown off his/her bike in any of the above situations, there is the added risk of being hit by another vehicle. The Highway Code states “You must not cycle on a pavement”. However, this year government transport minister Robert Goodwill confirmed that pavement cycling fines should not be aimed at responsible cyclists who sometimes feel obliged to use the pavement out of fear of traffic and who show consideration to other pavement users when doing so. The original guidance from Paul Boateng in 1999 also said: “Chief police officers, who are responsible for enforcement, acknowledge that many cyclists, particularly children and young people, are afraid to cycle on the road, sensitivity and careful use of police discretion is required.” The danger that cyclists pose to other road users is often overestimated. In 2012, 98% of serious or fatal pedestrian injuries in urban areas in Great Britain were due to collisions with motor vehicles. Why then, is disapproval not directed more at motor vehicles? Cyclists are often blamed for crashes, but this is not borne out

by the police record of contributory factors. Drivers of vehicles were more than twice as likely as cyclists to be recorded as “failing to look properly” in collisions involving cycles and another vehicle in 2012. Traffic junctions remain the most dangerous places for cycling. These days, I see a lot more cyclists stopping at red lights, but I am also aware that many cyclists have a mounting sense of vulnerability while waiting at a busy junction as traffic assembles behind them waiting to overtake (or undertake). Riding off during the red traffic phase offers an escape while the traffic is still restrained, but risks hitting a pedestrian or being hit oneself by a motor vehicle due to misjudgement. The majority of cyclists do stay on the right side of the law. Contrary to assumption, cyclists disobeying traffic signals was not among the top ten most commonly occurring factors contributing to fatal cycling incidents in 2012. Although cyclists should behave responsibly and within the law, road traffic rules should not make cyclists choose between acting legally and staying safe. Those responsible for making and enforcing the rules must take into account the reasons for offending behaviour, particularly while road conditions remain so inadequate. Becky Reynolds is the campaign officer for Bricycles, (Brighton and Hove Cycling Campaign). For more information visit: www.bricycles. org.uk, or follow them on Twitter at @Bricycles.

Visits from author Philip Pullman before he became famous I first knew - brilliantly anarchic, a devourer of existentialist literature, someone who despised prizes, popularity, the publicity machine and all “systems”, including the Philip Pullman is nowadays the academic one - with the President celebrated author of a bestselling of the Society of Authors, recipient fantasy trilogy, which runs second of innumerable prizes and honorary in the popularity stakes - and rather degrees, provider of a thousand ahead in the critical stakes - to the book-jacket “puffs”, serial tweeter about the antics of a housefly. We had been close friends since him, as he had put on weight, wore 1965, when we studied English glasses, and had the beginnings together at Oxford. In those days he of a double chin. “I’m impressed, went by the name “Nick”, and it is as overwhelmed, by Nick’s intelligence, Nick Pullman that he appears in my observation, knowledge, flow of journals of the time. Indeed, I find it opinion, decisiveness. Coming into rather hard to reconcile the person my room, he spots everything at once - what books are on the shelves, what cassettes, what things are lying around, what the view is. Unchosen by Julie Burchill It wasn’t the culture, the humour, or the food that drew the Queen of Brighton writers to the Jews. It was something else, something deeper, darker and nameless. But drew her, it did. In this very funny and very moving book Burchill describes her mother’s despair when Julie tells her at a very early age that she wants to marry a Jew. Her mother, the exquisitely named Bette, tears her hair and replies in a heavy West Country accent “Well, where we going to get one o’them round ‘ere?!” This is a glorious memoir that throws up some wonderful questions and quotes. Tanya Gold says that Julie has “the most extreme case of Jew madness” and indeed there is something

of the manic quality to her lifelong obsession, but that, of course, just makes it more compelling than ever to read. No stranger to controversy, indeed she woos it with an ardour usually found in fervent love letters of an elderly roué to a young girls, this book will shock and entertain equally. “Women who convert to Islam have as much sense as those dozy cows that write love letters to serial rapists and murderers,” is one of the least contentious claims. But, as usual, she’s quite right. The teenage Julie gets a look in, telling us of how she brooded in her room about the atrocities committed to the Jews with the same level of dedication about the unfairness of not being old enough to marry Marc Bolan. You’ve gotta love her.

country are inferior to those in America.Worthing is full of old ladies and reminds him of unpleasant visits in his childhood when he had to be on his best behaviour. He spots at once the infinity reflections in the facing hall mirrors which it took me two months to notice. There are no hesitations. He says, ‘Let’s go to the beach’, so we do. Then, in the bar, ‘I’ve got to get back,’ and he’s on his feet.” He was here again in September.“As Nick enters the room, he stops and cocks an ear to the jazz playing on

the machine. Tries to guess who it is. Talks informatively about this little phrase, that little detail being reminiscent of this performer or that.” As for my wretched photographs, “he draws diagrams to explain depth of field. Then we get onto quantum theory, dark matter, cosmic string, the Mandelbrot set, God knows what. He shoots names of authors at me - Gleick, Danah Zohar, Hrabil. Corn circles are discussed, ghosts, UFOs, coincidences. The films of Peter Greenaway, the music of Philip Glass.”

There were several more such visits. After his aunt went into a home, he came to see his stepfather at Hailsham, always stopping off to call on me. At the last, in July 1998, with two volumes of the trilogy now out, he talked of the strain of American promotional tours, gnosticism, Proust. “He admires the high sea and the roofscape visible from my window. Brings a huge carrot cake.” Graham Chainey is a freelance writer living in Brighton and Hove.

Making city more attractive is hardly rocket science Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland

There are many wonderful things to celebrate about our city. We have a vibrant, mixed and colourful community along with some truly great cultural assets such as the Brighton Pavilion, Dome, Corn Exchange and of course Volk's electric railway. The Palace Pier and seafront amusements provide more than our fair share of slot machine type entertainment. Then of course we have the aquarium which is worth a visit along with a ride on the Brighton Eye, or the Toy Museum next to Brighton station. Moving inland we have Stanmer House and park plus the newly-revamped Rural Museum. However, we have definitely missed some tricks over the years and could have done a whole lot better with a bit more foresight.

I think the biggest mistake was to have allowed the open air pools at Black Rock and Rottingdean to close. There will always be entities that will lose money in a tourist resort but these are often the very things that helped build it in the first place. How many times do we see this around the country where councillors with little or no financial expertise make often disastrous game changing decisions? Certainly the decision to close the pool at Black Rock was not one of our city's better ones. Instead we have a blot on the landscape when the story could have been so very different. Of course the direction of our city is altering as time passes and the cultural mood changes. That is something we must all embrace and welcome if it is for the good. However, some things will never change. People will always want seaside attractions. The two long-lost open air pool gems may

be nothing but a fond memory to us, but the next generation’s memories are yet to be formed and it is for us to lay these foundations. With careful thought and planning we have the entire stretch between the Palace Pier and the Marina at our disposal. It is obvious that an all year round Volks Railway service should be linking both marina and pier with other various stops along the way. We need to encourage private investment to provide much needed attractions such as an outdoor lido and permanent indoor ice rink. We do not need blocks of flats as enabling developments to achieve this either, but simply a will between council and private investment to make it happen. Another obvious attraction would be the Brighton Motor Museum. What better place than

The Volks electric railway is a great cultural asset to the town

Madeira Drive where the London to Brighton rallies finish every year. I am sure if approached, the RAC would support that idea. A museum celebrating the history of motoring along with a well displayed collection of classic cars would be a great tourist draw. It doesn't take much imagination either to work out

E views@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk or

that a living working museum with live actors depicting Brighton as it used to be would be a winner. This could particularly focus on the seafront and its changes since the Prince Regent’s day. Perhaps we can even organise a few sections of sandy beach. If we can build a Marina we can certainly do that. It's hardly rocket science.

A manifesto for older people: Have your say on October 30 Paul Philo

Coggings & Co is all about great burgers, made with local ingredients sourced with care, prepared with skill and served with warmth. Monday – Saturday 12noon to 11pm. Sunday 12noon to 7pm. 01273 220220 87-93 Dyke Rd, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 3JE www.coggingsandco.com

Older people are not responsible for the present economic crisis. Nor are they having an easy time while the rest of the population suffers austerity. Older people have the same share of people in poverty as the rest of the population. And many are vulnerable to cold and illness. In the winter of 2012-2013 - the latest for which we have figures 30,000 pensioners were killed by the cold. Sometimes, it is forgotten how much pensioners contribute to our society. It is estimated they pay £45 billion in tax every year. Increasingly, older people are providing more unpaid childcare to their grandchildren to keep their parents at work and are providing an army of volunteers to keep many services afloat. Pensioners share the same concerns as all adults. Recent data from the British Social Attitudes survey showed all age-groups rated health and education as their top priorities for public spending. Older people, too, share with the young concerns about the environment and peace. There are, however, some immediate concerns for older people that will undoubtedly affect how they vote. The National

Pensioners Convention (NPC) has developed its own manifesto for next year’s general election, from contributions from Brighton and Hove, and from all over Britain. The NPC Brighton and Hove Pensioners Action Group and many other interested people will question parliamentary candidates from the three main political parties at the Brighthelm Centre on Thursday, October 30. The candidates chosen by the political parties are: Davy Jones, the Green Party parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown; Nancy Platts, Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown; and Clarence Mitchell, the Conservative Party parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion. They will be questioned by the audience about how their policies for elders compare with the NPC and also on more local

and national policies of interest to everybody. Before the meeting, however, Brighton & Hove Independent has agreed to publish statements from each of them about their policies for older people. Older people are more inclined to vote than the rest of the population. There is, however, a danger that because some ill and infirm people are not able to demonstrate - that they are ignored. The NPC in Brighton and Hove intends to show that pensioners are not passive and that those of us who are capable will campaign to maintain existing rights and to improve the conditions of all people in the city and beyond. A manifesto for older people: The NPC meeting, supported by Brighton & Hove Independent, will be at the Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton, at 6.30pm on Thursday, October 30.

Conversations Great to hear businesses are confident in the city I read with interest my copy of Brighton and Hove Independent, on page 15 of August 15, (I never miss an edition) and I found out incredibly heartening to learn a number of businesses are opening up new branches in the city. I am retired but as a former small business owner I can well appreciate how tough it must have been for some local firms to get through the recession and economic problems this country has faced in the last few years. It cannot have been at all easy. So to hear that things are improving to the extent that people are taking a chance on Brighton and Hove and not just managing to keep existing businesses open but launch new ones is very encouraging. It is always nice to read about good news happening locally. We all know that every town and city in the country and Brighton and Hove is no different. But there are also a lot of good things going on. I walked down the seafront this

week and was pleased to see new businesses up and running in the arches next to where the i360 is going to go. They looked very smart and hopefully will be the start of some real improvements in that area of the city. I know a lot of people are apprehensive about the i360 but I am sure it is going to be a good thing. To get any investment in the city in the current financial climate must be positive. I find it refreshing to see previously neglected parts of the city being improved like this. The same goes for The Level – what a difference from how it used to be. Churchill Square looks better having benefited from the work on its front and always seems to be busy. It is just nice to know that businesses – both local and national – have confidence in Brighton and Hove. The more new shops and businesses the better! Ethan Bentley

Congratulations to Mike Holland and Brighton & Hove Independent for the article on cycling on the pavement (August 22). As someone who has received abuse and physical threats for telling cyclists to get off the pavement, I agree with his every word. I wrote to Sussex Police ten years ago voicing similar concerns, but predictably -nothing came of it. Interestingly, I recently witnessed a cyclist being issued with a fine for riding on the pavement by a policeman in the City of London, so it can be done. Thanks again, Mike.

In our August 22 edition our columnist Mike Holland divided opinion with his column on cyclists. We were inundated with emails and tweets. Some agreed with him, some didn’t. Others asked to hear from a local cyclist. So we contacted

Is there something going on locally you think people should know about? Perhaps you would like to write a column for us on a local subject close to your heart. Please do get in touch.

The electricity distribution network in Brighton and Hove has been given a £1 million upgrade. UK Power Networks, which owns and runs the network across the southeast, has installed a new 132,000-volt underground cable. The new cable was laid along the 7.2km route of the old one, using the spare steel duct that was laid at the time of the installation of the existing cable in the 1960s and represents a major investment in improving the city’s energy infrastructure.

Emmaus Brighton and Hove is selling 1,000s of books for just 1p each after clearing out its warehouse. The charity is selling the books from its second-hand superstore in Drove Road, Portslade. It is open today (Friday) and tomorrow between 10am and 5pm. Emmaus supports formerly homeless people by giving them somewhere to live, meaningful work within its social enterprise and the chance to get back on their feet. It offers accommodation for 48 people locally.

Brighton and Hove City Council has won a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for its Healthwalks project. The award was due to be presented to workers, volunteers and walkers from the scheme by the Queen’s regional representative; The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex; at Brighton Town Hall yesterday (Thursday). Brighton and Hove Healthwalks has provided a programme of free walks across the city for over ten years. On average over 1,000 people walk with Healthwalks every year.

Brighton and Hove has been named the UK’s favourite city for restaurants and bars. The city topped the poll at the annual Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Travel Awards, beating off competition from the likes of Edinburgh and London. The two capitals, however, were named first and second respectively in the overall favourite city category. Brighton was named a credible fifth - up from 12th in a similar vote last year.

The University of Brighton’s Waste House project has been praised by Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion. Students made a complete house using recycled items, including more than 20,000 old toothbrushes, two tonnes of denim jeans, and 4,000 video cassettes. Now Ms Lucas believes the housing industry should follow suit. She said: “This is the way we are going to have to build in the future if we are serious about living within the resources of one planet earth.”

Brighton and Hove residents are being reminded they will soon need to dial 01273 when using a landline to call a local number. From October 1 anyone local who is calling another local number will have to enter the area code first. The reason for the change is that there is so much demand for new numbers using the 01273 code that the allocation is set to run out in the near future.

Football fundraiser A charity football match is taking place on Sunday (September 7) to raise funds for the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU) at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Ted’s Trophy is being held at Shoreham Football Club, with kick-off at 1.45pm. The match is between Search Seven XI and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit XI and tickets are just £4, with no charge for under 12’s. It promises to be an entertaining event, with a raffle

after the match, a half-time penalty shootout, a licenced bar and much more. The event has been organised to highlight the work of the TMBU and in particular, to thank the whole unit for helping Ted Macdonald, who will turn two in October, fight his way back from almost not surviving, or from suffering long term brain damage, to living the full life that he does today. Ted is the godson of Search Seven founder Gavin Willis, who explained his reasons for arranging this charity event in his name: “Ted will celebrate his second birthday in October and

he is a very loveable, smiley, cheeky little chap, filled with joy and happiness. “However there can be little doubt that this would not be the case had Ted not received the fantastic care and attention that he did from the Trevor Mann Baby Unit in the first two weeks of his life.”

There is a wide range of events and activities happening at any one of these youth clubs every night of the week. These include singing and drama at the Deans Youth Project in Woodingdean and skateboarding for girls at Brighton Youth Centre near Edward Street. There's a young women’s group- focusing on mental health at the Hangleton and Knoll project in the west Hove or you can go to various drop-in sessions at the Young People's Centre in Ship Street to discuss numerous issues. Ben Glazebrook, lead services manager, said: "All we are asking is that everyone in Brighton and Hove collects up all their copper coins around the house, office, car, shop or garden shed; bags them up and then hands them into any one of the following places who are already supporting this campaign: Sussex County Cricket Ground, Velo Cafe on

The Level, Dorothy Stringer School, Varndean School and Roedean School plus The Young People's Centre, Crew Club, Deans Youth Project, Brighton Youth Centre, or any of The Collective offices across the city." Having launched at ASDA in Brighton Marina on Tuesday, it is hoped that over the next few months the Brighton and Hove Youth Collective will have collected most of Brighton and Hove's copper coins. The money can then be put towards the worthwhile activities and services that help support young people across the city. Although The Collective receives central funding, this only provides the basic support. In one day the team collected over £100 by shoppers at ASDA in the Marina.

Collective’s coin collection campaign The Brighton and Hove Youth Collective, a collection of eight youth groups from across the city, has launched a three-month fundraising campaign called The Copper Collective. The aim of the campaign is for the city to support young people who are engaging in fundraising by asking all schools, businesses, families and community groups to collect in their 1p and 2p copper coins in time for Christmas. The group will then collect up and count all the donations and set up a youth panel to decide how the money should be best spent. The Brighton and Hove Youth Collective is an organisation which is made up of eight youth clubs which support young people across Brighton and Hove: The Young People's Centre (YPC), Crew Club, Deans Youth Project, Brighton Youth Centre, Tarner Community Project, Hangleton and Knoll Project, The Trust for Developing Communities and Sussex YMCA. They are all registered charities. These eight groups who previously worked independently have recently changed their approach and now work together to deliver a more efficient and co-ordinated programme of youth activities across Brighton and Hove. The Youth Collective delivers a coproduced service with projects and programmes to develop and deliver an innovative, co-ordinated and responsive service to better meet the needs of young people living in the city.

Just as we workout and stretch the muscles in our body, if you were to workout and stretch the muscles of your mind you would develop emotional resilience and self regulation, have clear communication with yourself and others and respond skilfully to challenging situations.

Around 4,000 people headed to Brighton Racecourse for a family day last weekend. Organisers of the Gatwick Airport Family Fun Raceday were delighted with the turn-out, which dwarfed the previous best family day attendance or around 2,200. People of all ages attended the event, which boasted seven races, including the Gatwickairport.com Handicap, Gatwick Airport Supports Chestnut Tree House Apprentice Handicap and the Apprentice Handicap. A wonderful day was had by all, with youngsters enjoying fairground rides, face-painting, and zorbing.

Brighton Digital Festival | September 8 -15

Brandwatch: Data is beautiful and a driving force behind business Giles Palmer @joodoo9

The Brandwatch digital canvas is a visual metaphor for how data drives every aspect of our lives. Taking data from the theoretical to the visceral, the display is a labour of data and design love. Not to mention a love of our Brandwatch hometown and headquarters here in lovely Brighton. During the Brighton Digital Festival for the duration of September, the second floor windows of International House will be draped with a hand-crafted LED curtain. We’ll be displaying messages, designs, and a slew of fun stuff. It’s a creative twist on what we do in our day jobs at Brandwatch, harvesting social data and conversations and displaying them in a creative visual design. Data can often be seen as mathematical and technical. We see it as beautiful. Data is the driving force behind our business, providing supreme social intelligence to world-leading brands and agencies. That’s why members of our engineering and design team have hand-soldered 1,792 LED lights for this interactive

light display driven by Brighton citizens sending messages via Twitter. It’s a marriage of social data and high-concept design aesthetics, a major design and business approach for us. We’re big on open data. It’s an under-utilized resource that can lead to medical breakthroughs, technological discoveries, and learning more about how our society functions and thinks on any topic. The Brandwatch digital LED display for the Brighton Digital Festival taps into all that amazing open data on Twitter to produce something that appeals to the eyes, the minds, and all of the senses of Brighton. The LED window display is purposefully lo-fi, a whimsical throwback to the graphical style of 70s and 80s computing. This retro

approach is a nod towards 25 years of the web, one of the themes of this year's festival. Visual communication is paramount in today’s data-driven mindset. We love that! The digital space and the social media landscape are constantly evolving, driven heavily by the prevalence of visuals. Our Brandwatch Funky Fridays give our engineering team the chance to set their creativity free. What’s a Funky Friday? All Engineering staff get to work on whatever project they want. Anything at all. Get an idea, try it, and hopefully learn something new in the process. At the end of the day, people get together and show what they’ve built. Some of these innovative breakthroughs get turned into cool new Brandwatch products and features. This collaborative and creative approach is the same driving force behind the Brighton Digital Festival and our city at large. We’re proud of both, and happy to have a window view to it all.

The Africa Sting: How a Brighton businessman lost two years of his life after the FBI falsely accused him of corruption Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

To begin at the beginning: Lee Wares - son of a welder and a nurse - born in Shoreham, raised in Mile Oak, educated at Portslade Community College. Where he gained eight O-levels. “I left school at 16 because of my family background. My father started work at 15, sweeping the floors at HA Waller & Sons, the sheet-metalworking factory. He worked his way through the company and became managing director. My ambition was to get to work. My family’s ethos was that you work hard to create something for yourself. In a way, that’s why I’m a Conservative.” Mr Wares joined Brighton Borough Council as a trainee building control officer in 1983;

the following year, he observed first-hand the aftermath of the Grand Hotel bombing. After moving to Hove Borough Council and still young, he decided to be a chartered surveyor and got his qualifications at Southampton Institute of Higher Education. He was ready for what became a pivotal career move. In the early 1990s, he landed a surveying job with what was then Midland Bank, with responsibility for about 200 branches. Continuing with his studies, the boy from Portslade grandson of a dustman - became a Royal chartered surveyor and a member of what became HSBC’s disaster-recovery team. It was not long before his expertise was required. “I was on call on the day there was a terrorist attack at St Mary’s Axe, which affected 99 Bishopsgate which was HSBC’s main

office in London. I was part of the team responsible for clearing a 26-storey office building in the City of London in readiness for reconstruction. That took more than six months, working mainly at night.” His huge responsibility soon got even bigger. “There was a series of terror attacks in London, including Docklands and Bishopsgate again. And - because of my experience - I became part of the team that had the knowledge of how to deal with such major disasters. I was responsible for millions of pounds of expenditure in a very short period and had to make big judgment calls.” And his reward? Even more responsibility - for high-profile HSBC assets, such as high-risk secret facilities. Mr Wares cannot divulge the details. But you may be asking yourself where a global bank keeps its gold bullion and stocks of banknotes.

operations to cash-in-transit corporations - such as Brink’s which led me to assist in those types of businesses.” That eventually led him to Security Support Solutions (3S), a company that provided “protected” vehicles; the distinction from armoured vehicles, Mr Wares stresses, is crucial. “We provided protected vehicles for a number of organisations, such as UNICEF, carrying out humanitarian work in Africa; the UN election inspection teams monitoring the first modern, democratic elections in Iraq; and to help protect the heroes of our armed forces operating overseas.” The O’Gara Group - an American company that says it is “focused on solutions to support and enhance law-enforcement, homeland security, and counterterrorism capabilities” - bought the business, in which Mr Wares had been a shareholder. He stayed on as a director.

I hope people will see a person who has tremendous tenacity to get things done, is not put off by any challenge, and is passionate about removing injustice"

“After working in those highrisk environments for some years, I left the bank to work in an organisation that supported other financial institutions with highrisk operations in the emerging markets - for example, China, Russia, and eastern Europe. “During that period, the banks were outsourcing a lot of their

And that was when his life was turned upside down. Unbeknown to Mr Wares, a cocaine-addicted American arms sales executive - Richard Bistrong - had been caught breaking antibribery laws. enough for them to set up a sting to trap 22 people; some were little more than names in his contacts book. As it turned out, they were 22 innocent people. One of them was Mr Wares. And this is his story. “I was lured to America - to an annual trade show held in Las Vegas - on the pretext of meeting a government official relating to a project that had been introduced to the company. “I and a group of other people - most of whom I didn’t know were taken in a series of 4x4s to a display out of town, whereupon the vehicle I was travelling in was stormed by eight fully-armed FBI SWAT team-members in full body armour, helmets and goggles. “I counted at least four machineguns pointing at my head and four pistols. I was dragged from the vehicle. I was stood against the wall, searched at gunpoint, handcuffed behind my back, and placed into another vehicle with a single SWAT officer. “I thought that this was part of some demonstration or prank by the organisers and it wasn’t until I was eventually moved to a series of pre-fabricated buildings where I saw more than 150 FBI agents milling about, with 20 or so other people who had been in that convoy, that I realised that this was no demonstration. “I was led into a building where I was searched again. But I had my tie, belt and shoelaces removed and I noticed a box on the table that had my name on it, my picture, my date of birth, and the words ‘armed and dangerous’. “Eventually, I was taken to FBI district headquarters where after sitting for more than six

In the kitchen • Never pour fat, oil or grease down sinks, drains or toilets. Over time, this can cause blockages and lead to flooding in your street or even your home • Before washing dishes, scrape or tip cold fat, oil and grease – as well as food scraps – into a disposable container, let the fat solidify then put it in the bin

• Where appropriate, try to reuse oil and fat • Your local authority recycling centre may have an oil and fat recycling facility

When she left, I thought that was the last time I would see her. “We said, ‘When this is over, we’ll get married’. When I came out we got married almost straightaway; it gave us hope of something positive, while we touched each other’s hands on the video screen.” Inevitably, Mr Wares’s imprisonment has coloured his judgment of the United States judicial system. “I was subjected to numerous strip searches and cavity inspections whenever I was moved, which was frequently. I was put into leg irons; I had a chain wrapped round my waist and I was handcuffed to that chain. “For 32 days I was moved around the US to various state prisons, federal institutions

and transit centres. I travelled in buses, vans, cars, and the infamous ConAir. “I eventually arrived in Washington DC and within hours I was put in front of a federal judge who immediately released me on bail. “It is clear to me that the experience of being incarcerated unreasonably, in such barbaric conditions, was to intimidate me and to force my capitulation into agreeing that I had done something wrong. Which I had not." It took two long years for Mr Wares to clear his name - with none of the publicity the original arrests received. Giving his ruling, Judge Richard Leon said the fiasco was “the end of a long and sad chapter in the annals of whitecollar criminal law enforcement”. He accused the US Department of Justice of pushing a “very aggressive conspiracy theory that was pushing its already-

generous elasticity to its outer limits”. The judge censured the prosecutors for “sharp practices which have no place in a federal court room”. That was February 2012. So what does the future hold now for Mr Wares? His experiences have focused his mind and he has decided to exercise his undoubted strengths in the political sphere. He has been chosen as a council candidate for Patcham by Brighton and Hove Conservatives, whose leaders he had previously told of his ordeal. “When you experience what I did, you reflect on the many things that you had planned to do in the future, but that you keep putting back. It is then that you have terrible regrets. “So I did marry my fiancée and I spent a lot more time with my family and friends. I found that I had an inner sense of reward and satisfaction, far greater than I had achieved in my business

life, by doing things for people for no other reason than it made a difference to them. “Being a councillor in this great city will, for me, be the biggest inner reward I could possibly achieve. For the city and the residents of Patcham, I hope they will see a person who has tremendous tenacity to get things done, is not put off by any challenge - however enormous it might be - and is passionate about removing injustice in whatever guise it is. “I would hope people will see a person who has much interest in the smallest concerns of an individual, as well as the biggest. "Above all, I hope they see a person who is driven to doing what is best for this city, its residents, and visitors - and who, in return, wants nothing other than to go home and know that every day he may have just have made life a little bit better for somebody.”

hours with my hands cuffed behind my back, drinking water through a straw - I was taken to be interviewed. “I was notified that I had been arrested for a number of whitecollar offences in America. It hardly goes without saying that I should never have been arrested. But my nightmare did not end there. “I was put in a holding cell for three nights, where I slept on the floor. I was given no access to showering, cleaning my teeth, changing my clothes. For three days, I sat and slept in the same clothes I was arrested in. It was freezing. In that same cell, were 19 other people. “I was eventually taken before a judge to apply for bail against these ludicrous charges, only to be told that - as a non-national - I was considered a ‘flight risk’. And it was only a judge in Washington DC who could grant me bail. “It took the federal government 32 days to get me from Las Vegas to Washington DC. During those 32 days, I experienced some of the most inhumane and brutal times of my life. “As horrific it was for me, I knew where I was and I knew what was happening at every moment. But my family had no idea what was happening to me and could fear only the worst for somebody locked up for 23 hours a day sharing cells with murderers and drug-dealers. “My fiancée - now my wife,

Chamber’s bite-sized tips: What band waggons should you jump on?

Get sásta at Brighton Marina

In the latest Brighton & Hove Independent column from the Chamber of Commerce, Al Tredinnick talks about what is good for business, and what isn’t.

A new fitness studio at Brighton Marina is offering an increasingly-popular Irish weight-loss technique. Sásta Brighton is a state-of-theart new centre which guarantees regulars can drop a clothes size in just four weeks of get their money back. The technique is based on the patented sásta fitness pod in which a short 30-minute walk or run gives the sensation of running in water. It is an approach which is proving particularly popular with busy people happy to fit their work-out into just half an hour. Sásta Brighton is the first centre of its type to open in the UK, with sásta (which means satisfied in Gaelic) the brainchild of acclaimed entrepreneur Fiona Egan. She explained: “I know from personal experience that when you are overweight, it

can be so hard to make that first phone call or to visit your local weight loss facility. That’s why we insist that our studios are staffed by caring team members who are there to help, motivate and support customers.” Sásta Brighton is offering free trials. For more information call 01273 610660, email brighton@ sastafitness.co.uk or visit: www.sastafitness.co.uk.

The future in technological terms can now be just six months away. Adoption rates for new innovations can be measured in days with millions of users getting involved within the first weeks of a product going live. But which band waggons Al Tredinnick should we be thumbing a lift on and which are headed over technology that lets everyone a cliff? For anyone running a know what you are thinking, it’s business this can be especially called social media. Social media is a great nerve wracking. Everyone is currently talking example of how companies have about wearable tech such as struggled to work out how to smart watches and Google Glass accommodate a technology that but this is just the beginning. is obviously very popular but Three years ago Berkley where the business case isn’t University in the US released always immediately obvious. In November 2013 Hasen images captured from subjects’ actual minds. Arguably we already have the top of BA’s Twitter feed. Six

hours after the tweet went live Mashable re-tweeted it to their four million followers. Four hours after that BA’s Twitter team arrived at work at 9am as usual and finally responded. Having an unhandled complaint sat in front of millions of potential customers is obviously not good. The moral of this story is that the technologies that are likely to have the biggest impact on your business are the ones that enable your customers to get what they want out of the products and services you provide. If millions of potential customers are using a technology then so should you. If that piece of tech doesn’t make sense initially then get an early adopter to show you around. Financial advice from Hove-based experts Mindfulness: strengthening mental health through meditation Advertising feature

Ian Poysden @iepfinancial

IEP Financial is a long-running firm of Independent Financial Advisers (IFAs) based in Hove serving clients across Sussex and the southeast. Over the years we have built up an excellent reputation for providing a first class level of independent financial advice to a broad range of individuals and businesses. Our services include providing expert advice on pensions, investments, protection and mortgages. We are committed to offering appropriate and unbiased independent financial advice to all our clients and are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Over the next eight weeks we will be providing industry news and opinions on financial matters that affect everyone, ranging from Auto Enrolment to mortgages and wills. Last week, RBS were fined £14.5 million for the role they played in offering poor financial advice when selling their mortgage products. Our focus this week is

therefore on the 2014 Mortgage Market Review and how it will affect you. On April 26 this year the Mortgage Market Review (MMR) came into action. Put forward by the FCA and The Bank of England, its purpose is to halt irresponsible lending and to encourage affordability and responsible lending to all types of borrowers. The main changes to mortgage lending through the MMR include: ■ Much stricter checks on your personal finances – up to 40 questions in the initial interview will mean your finances are poured over with a fine tooth comb; ■ Be able to prove that should interest rates rise, (as expected in Spring 2015), borrowers will still be able to afford their repayments; ■ Interest-only mortgages are still allowed, but only where there is a "credible strategy for repaying the capital". This will mean most lenders won't take the sale of the house as a repayment vehicle; ■ Mortgage sales will need to be advised – lenders' staff will have to be qualified and will not just be allowed to sell home loans without assessing customers; So who can we expect to be better off through this new review? Typically a single person, or couple, with no children, no expenses, who rarely holiday and who have money left over after

their monthly outgoings, should do fairly well out of this. However, this is obviously not the average person. Borrowers with children are likely to be affected due to high childcare costs and increased expenditure that children incur. Also borrowers with loans, or other debts, and whose monthly bank statement shows regular spending with nothing left over, are likely to suffer. If you are planning on applying for a mortgage in the near future, the advice is simple. Prepare by budgeting and cut back as much as possible on unnecessary expenditure. If you need independent advice with mortgages or any other financial matter, please call us on 01273 208813 or visit our website www.iepfinancial.co.uk.

Improving well-being is top of the agenda for Brighton-based mindfulness teacher Elaine Rose Leela. Over the past year she has been teaching courses in mindfulness-based stress reduction to teachers and staff at schools, in health care organisations and to the general public. The philosophy and practice of mindfulness is something that more and more people are becoming aware of every day. Mindfulness is a non-religious practice that has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety as well as alleviating depression by helping people access their innate well-being. Elaine has been studying the measurable benefits of mindfulness at Bangor University for the past five years. “As a mindfulness practitioner and teacher,” she said, “I know that everyone has the capacity to access their core wellness. For my own practise and my studies and research I have seen first-hand how mindfulness

can help us surf the waves of challenge situations of daily life.” As Elaine explains, mindfulness teaches us to become present, and be with each moment as if it really mattered. She continued: “I discovered mindfulness in 2006 when I was faced with big changes in my life, it was a stressful time and I found that the practice helped me return to my centre and get me through. After the stress had subsided, mindfulness continued to bring benefits to my daily life. Having worked in education for over 18 years, it was a natural step to combine my passion for meditation with teaching.” As an introduction, why not attend a day of mindfulness? You will get to try out the practices and ask all the questions you need to. Eight week courses start in October and Elaine also delivers CPD courses to organisations and business. Former City College students launch hip new bobble hat range Two former City College Brighton and Hove students, Jo Hawkins and Anna Dugard, have teamed up to launch Kubixl, a hip new range of colourful unisex bobble hats with unique interchangeable pompoms. The hats, designed by the pair, are made in the UK from a

premium cotton blend yarn and branded with an embossed leather badge. They are then topped with an individually hand-made pompom, and handfinished by the team personally. With an initial collection consisting of seven distinctive designs in place, the team’s Kickstarter campaign has just hit its target of raising £3,000 to help cover manufacturing costs and fund marketing and promotional events in the run up to Christmas. Kubixl has received pledges from the UK, Europe, Asia and USA and attracted interest from customers and larger buyers interested in stocking the product. Ms Hawkins said: "We

My degree in Product Design at Sussex University really helped me focus on what makes a successful brand, but having City College adult learning courses available to me has also been integral to launching our company. “As well as being on a dressmaking course I studied Dreamweaver, which has

Three cheers for Craft Beer Co Craft Beer Co is already one of Brighton and Hove’s most popular pubs, drawing in punters with its eclectic and substantial range of beers and ales. Situated in the heart of the town centre on Upper North Street, this small, independent London-based pub chain recently underwent an intense four week period of restoration including, most importantly, a new kitchen and upstairs seating area. But has the hard-work paid off? Changing the downstairs interior to a light, pale yellow colour instantly makes Craft Beer Co more welcoming and inviting. But it’s the upstairs seating area where you can

see the effort the pub has put into their expansion. Kitted out in larger tables with plum walls and leather seats, this area has a more formal, plush feel to it. Seating 30 with an additional room for 12 in the more intimate room next door, Craft Beer Co clearly used their business nous to ensure that the space can be utilised for parties, weddings etc. Aside from additional seating and a lick of paint, a brand new kitchen has been added. Not a first for the Craft Beer Co collective but a muchneeded addition to this Brighton branch. Formerly the pub had been surviving on the occasional homemade Scotch egg, packets of crisps and hosting the odd popup. But now they’re firing up the griddle and setting themselves bang on trend by serving a selection of - you guessed it - burgers. Forty Burger, an independent

start-up with presence in the London-based Craft Beer Co pubs have set up camp and brought their simple ‘something for everyone’ menu down to the coast. Burgers include a cheese, a daring sounding Elvis with peanut butter and banana, plus good vegetarian options, including a lentil and goats cheese burger that is unique to the Brighton pub. Opting for a simple cheese and bacon with red onion relish, shredded lettuce, pickles, smoked streaky bacon and mature cheddar, I also sampled the skin-on chips with parmesan and truffle oil. Other sides are on offer including an interesting special of chips and bacon dust. Served on a metallic tray with cutlery, Craft Beer Co have been careful to minimise the street food element currently associated with

Craft Beer Co @craftbeercoBN1 22-23 Upper North St, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 3FG www.thecraftbeerco.com/ pubs/brighton/ burgers and aim for a slightly more sophisticated, classic burger. The patty, made from Aberdeen beef, was cooked medium and fresh to order. Incredibly filling and very meaty, the burger was thick and oozed gorgeous juices. Paired with the combination of salty bacon, rich cheddar and crunchy lettuce allowed for a really good, classic ‘all-American’ feel to the burger. The bun however was slightly dry yet quickly remedied with a generous slather of mayonnaise from the condiment selection. It would have been nice to see homemade sauces on offer rather than bottles and jars. The truffle oil chips were decedent and rich. Oily and sparkled with parmesan, the chips were an indulgence yet paired against the burger poorly. As a stand-alone dish they would have been superb alongside a smouldering glass of red or a smokey ale. It will be interesting to see how the menu fares against stiff competition across Brighton, however, Craft Beer Co is worth a look for burger-fans across the city with their straight-up classic selection of meat in a bun. Coffee Chronicles We’ve noticed a new trend emerging. Every once in a while, we’re being asked to make a Piccolo. Its name belies its roots, as despite the Piccolo originating from Australia (thanks for another

by @LittleCoffeeCo coffee innovation guys), it sounds irritatingly Italian and therefore authentic. It is not authentic, it is not Italian and it is not on our menu. The “recipe” for a Piccolo is a

single shot of espresso topped with steamed milk and finished with a layer of foam. Are you thinking that sounds awfully similar to a one shot Latte? Yeah, so are we. The Flat White was a genuinely great invention from Down Under, and we’ll sing its praises another day. The Piccolo, however, is not something which has baristas jumping for joy. Just like Spain’s Cortado, the

Piccolo is another case of a nation trying to fix something when it clearly isn’t broken. At our place, our menu space is reserved for traditional Italian coffees (and the Flat White) but if you really must have a Piccolo, ask for a one shot Latte and your wish will be our command. My best friend is a few weeks away from welcoming her first child into the world and so “operation baby-proof” has commenced. I’ve always had myself down as the more cautious of our duo, but it seems I was wrong, in this case at least. Tibbons is nearly two and the extent of our safety precautions at home are a stairgate and some covers on our blind cords. Well, that and we don’t tend to leave him on his own in a room - I’d say parents are the best “baby-proofing” measure. Maybe I should take myself on Dragon’s Den with that gem! I’m sure my friend doesn’t plan on leaving her baby unattended either, she just wants to keep them safe, and she’s being a lot more diligent in her preparation than I was! From cupboard catches to some other thing I’ve never heard of, it’s all on her radar. As you may have guessed from the above, I don’t really believe in “baby-proofing” (hence the excessive use of inverted commas). I’ve learnt by experience that even if you take your baby somewhere that is totally set up for them, with every safety precaution in mind, they will still seek out danger - like a moth drawn to a flame, or a paperclip to a magnet if the former sounds a bit too dangerous a comparison. I think babyproofing can even provide a false sense of security. That’s not my only objection though - how will your children learn about danger if you wrap them, or their surroundings in cotton wool? Yes, you need to keep them safe but you need to teach them how to do that for themselves too. If you eliminate all of the potential hazards, aren’t you pretty much guaranteeing that they won’t know how to avoid them outside of your home?!

A holiday to help you relax Richard Morris @BrightonIndy People often say, upon returning from their holiday, that they need another holiday to get over it and clock up some hours actually relaxing. Well, a local firm believes it has the answer to that by offering trips which combine exotic locations with relaxation and a search for inner peace. My Escape was formed by two young entrepreneurs from Brighton, Ellie Priest and Holly Cooper, with the goal of creating holidays which allow people to truly relax. Ms Priest is an experienced pilates instructor, while Ms Cooper is an expert in yoga. Both practiced for more than a decade before teaming up to take their passions to some of the world’s most-beautiful locations. When away, itineraries are planned to include relaxation sessions in both areas while allowing time to enjoy more traditional holiday activities - but there is no pressure to join in with everything, people are encouraged to dip in and out of sessions as they see fit. Previous trips have included visits to Morocco and Ibiza and later this year My Escape has a package to South Africa. That is taking place between November 14 and 22 and there are still places available. The instructors have already

Ms Priest, speaking about her experience, said: “Ever wondered what it would be like to take a trip of a lifetime to Africa? Wondered what it would be like to see lions, elephants, giraffe, leopards and cheetahs in the wild in front of your eyes? For us, all of the above is just mind-blowing. A journey for the soul. “At My Escape we will take you on this journey. This November the magic begins. The journey starts with a game drive at dusk. Local businesses are the life and soul of all cities; bringing an un-teachable understanding of the local area and home grown support to every company they work with. Carden’s Accountants might not be the first name to spring to mind when thinking about Brighton Fashion Week, but the financial advisors are out to prove that there’s more to accounting than stuffy suits. Speaking at our FAB Networking Brunch earlier this year, partner Barry Carden told us: “We’re different from other accounting companies, having greater involvement in fashion. We see BFW director Liz Bishop talk about designers who are going to do great things, but it’s difficult to monetarise that talent.” Business acumen and a

The club announced this week that members of the Albion’s Young Seagulls club can watch the side’s home game with Middlesbrough on October 18 for the cut-price, if accompanied by an adult. Young Seagulls is a junior membership scheme which is free to join and as well as offers like the £1 ticket deal, members receive a welcome pack, a birthday card and a free replica home shirt on their seventh birthday. It has proved hugely-popular with young fans across Sussex and the Albion is determined to continue doing all they can to make sure youngsters

follow the Seagulls rather than adopting a Premier League team to support. Since the club moved to the Amex, Brighton and Hove has seen an explosion in the number of young fans supporting the Albion - with Seagulls shirts now replacing the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea on the backs of many Sussex-based youngsters. Open training, signing sessions and well-attended fun days have all helped boost the club’s appeal while the progress being made on the pitch has helped fuel the appetite for all things Albion. This latest ticket discount for Young Seagulls members is for seats in the family area and South Stand. Adult prices for the Middlesbrough game start at £25 (or £20 for Bronze members who are receiving their own discount), meaning a parent and child can attend the game for as little as

£22.50 (with booking fee). A maximum of two £1 tickets can be purchased with each adult ticket and the offer is also available to senior ticket buyers. Tickets can be bought in person at the Amex or via the Albion Booking Line on 0844 327 1901 in advance (this offer is not available on a matchday). Adult fans who have a Seagulls Priority Bronze membership can save £5 on their ticket price for the Middlesbrough game, while Bronze members and Young Seagulls Plus members get the same discount for the Wigan game on Tuesday, November 4. Tickets for these two games start at just £20 for adult bronze members, from just £5 for under-18s, and 1p for under10s. For the Middlesbrough game the reduced Bronze Member price can be used alongside the £1 child ticket.

Straight from the commentary box Plenty of star attractions have been flying through the air in recent weeks above the A27. Shoreham Airshow delivered a fantastic spectacle but further east we are still waiting this season for another sight of the enigmatic Kazenga Lua Lua performing his trademark goal celebration to bring a smile to the face of many an Albion fan. He clinched the win at Leeds and assisted Lewis Dunk for the draw against Charlton but it can’t be long before he’s in a spin again soon at the Amex. He honed his tumbles with his brother Lomana who used to execute a gymnastic bounce or two in his time. Once Harry Redknapp told me and the attentive journalists that he had given him orders to the striker not to do it as he had twisted his ankle and would miss a few games. I find all celebrations interesting as they provide a brief, fleeting insight into the mind of the scorer. There’s been so many over the years it’s difficult to whittle them down. Albion Craig Mackail-Smith recently introduced the Seagull. Last week Leo Ulloa delivered his own ident in front of adoring Leicester fans. Over the years some have been simple, like Shearer. Some have

been misguided, like Fowler. Some have been arrogant, like Cantona and some downright silly, like Crouch’s robot . Last week there were plenty on show as I finally got to see the Match of The Day 50th anniversary programme. Not only did it remind you of the beauty and simplicity of the commentary from broadcasters such as Barry Davies but also memories of my childhood flooded back. Then I stopped. My past felt like the present. So many goals but then that Justin Fashanu goal for Norwich against Liverpool. Great words, great goal. But the celebration was so subdued. Perhaps another momentary portent of the troubles that would lay ahead. He only made 16 appearances for the Albion but younger readers should check out the goal. The programme covered so many goals, but if you watch it again, check out the celebrations. Henry, Sharp , Cahill, Yeboah. Now the powers that be have banned the removal of the shirt (remember Giggs swirling?) but we should still celebrate the intricacies and individuality of each and every celebration. Keep’em coming Messrs Lua Lua.

Who can forget Ryan Giggs’ famous shirt off celebration against Arsenal?

Chairman happy with transfer dealings after difficult summer Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion

Tony Bloom, the Brighton and Hove Albion chairman, is confident the Seagulls have a team which can challenge at the higher echelons of the Championship after a successful transfer window. The chairman had reassured supporters earlier in the summer that new manager Sami Hyypiä would have a competitive squad with which to launch an assault on the division and told anxious fans not to judge the club’s dealings until the transfer window had closed. That did not stop some fans criticising the club’s recruitment policy, particularly when the Albion narrowly missed out on signing Stephen Ward from Wolverhampton Wanderers. But, as the saying goes, good things tend to come to those who wait and the Albion’s patience has been rewarded by a string of promising recruits. Of the many new signings, Danny Holla and Joao Teixeira in particular have impressed supporters, with Teixeira scoring two goals since joining on loan from Premier League Liverpool and Holla showing early indications he could be the midfield schemer the Seagulls have been looking for. Elsewhere, Joe Bennett signed after Ward opted instead for Burnley - and new goalkeeper David Stockdale have both already established themselves as key first team players. Mr Bloom and his colleague Paul Barber, the club’s chief executive, met with supporters this week for a question and answer session, and both reiterated their belief that, while challenging, the summer had gone well. I am happy for Dunky, both goals were good headers. He has played very well recently and getting onto the score sheet is a bonus. It’s great that we have an outlet at set pieces as that is an important part of the game. “I had not heard a lot about him before I arrived, but I watched a few of last season’s games and I could see that he is a promising young central defender who can play football. I had a good picture in my mind of him and he has not disappointed me. “He has turned out to be as good as I thought and has even improved this season. If he can keep up his concentration and play to these levels across the whole season, then he will keep improving and can go on to good things in his career.”

Tony Bloom’s patience paid off over the summer

website, Mr Bloom said: “It was certainly a different sort of transfer window for us, it was the toughest I’ve had in my five years as chairman. “It wasn’t easy, it was a difficult start but the relief was that on the last day I was in meetings and then I was out in the pub in the evening and I didn’t get a phonecall. “It was always going to be more difficult in a World Cup year; it was also more difficult because we had a change in manager and we had to understand what Sami needed. “He had to be comfortable with the players and it was absolutely key that we’re getting in the players that fit his style of play, but we certainly expected to have one or two more signings in place at the start of the season. “On top of that we didn’t expect either Solly March or Dale Stephens to miss the start of the season, so it was really difficult for everyone including Sami, but he handled it extremely well.

“We’re delighted to be in the position we’re in as I said all along, but with peaks and troughs along the way. “We have a very good squad and one which I think has a very good chance of success this season.”
