LABOUR BAN COUNCILLOR
Welcome to One Planet City
EXCLUSIVE: Cllr Leigh Farrow speaks out after ‘kangaroo court’ finds him guilty Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy In the privacy of the Pelham Room, on the first floor of the Brighthelm Centre, the three Labour Party appointees sat as judge and jury. Watching on was Malcolm Powers, the party's unelected regional director, occasionally taking notes. The chief witnesses for the prosecution had given their evidence: Councillor Gill Mitchell, former leader and now chief whip of the Labour Group on Brighton and Hove City Council, and Councillor Chaun Wilson, her friend and colleague in East Brighton. It was 9.45pm when the hearing
- a "kangaroo court", according to Councillor Leigh Farrow, the veteran party member and defendant - had to end. The room, airless and claustrophobic, had been booked only until 9pm, and the caretaker needed to lock up. In truth, Cllr Farrow's fate had probably already been sealed. But the three-person disciplinary panel - chaired by Councillor Keith Dibble, former Labour Group leader on a council in Hampshire and chair of South East Labour - said they would sleep on their decision. When Cllr Dibble shook hands, Cllr Farrow - and Robert Brown MBE, his character witness and chair of the recently-suspended Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Branch Labour Party - took some

hope from the smile on his face. They were wrong. After an ordeal that has, it turns out, gone on more than two years, Cllr Farrow, 59, has been banned from standing again as the chosen party candidate at next year's city council elections. He has been a party member for 30 years; he has been an active trade unionist for even longer; he has served as a councillor both in Brighton and, in the early 1990s, in London. He is a workingclass socialist who works hard to represent citizens in one the city's most deprived wards - and, significantly perhaps, one of Labour's safest strongholds. >> Continued on page 8

Council asks citizens their opinion on what to be done about funding Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Brighton and Hove City Council is today embarking on a citywide consultation asking residents which services should be cut back in light of an anticipated £26 million drop in funding. The local authority is preparing next year’s budget and already knows it will have to do without £18 million of grant funding not being continued into 2015/16. Together with increased costs, that grant reduction leaves a funding gap of £26.3 million. By 2019/20 that budget gap could be as high as £102.4 million, assuming there
@BrightonHoveCC) or by filling in an online questionnaire at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ bhbudget. Councillor Ollie Sykes, head of finance at the council, said: “Next year’s council budget needs to save £26 million on top of £70 milliom saved over the past four years. “Decisions on where to spend less will be extremely challenging. It’s essential for us to hear from as many city residents as possible about what you think should change. “Please get involved in the Stop, Start, Change conversation and help us make the right decisions about next year’s budget.”
is no increase in council tax. The Green Party, which leads the council, will again propose a council tax increase – this time of 5.9%, equivalent to £1.48 more per week for a band D household. Even if approved, that increase alone will not plug the shortfall in government funding. And so councillors are today (Friday) launching a consultation campaign called Stop, Start, Change. They want to hear from as many locals as possible about what they would stop doing, or do less of; what they would start doing, or do more of; and what they would change. People can feedback on Twitter using the hashtag #BHbudget (follow the council at

A Brighton and Hove-based charity has been given a grant worth £143,621 by the Big Lottery Fund Reaching Communities programme. The Terrence Higgins Trust was one of four good causes in the southeast to benefit from the latest round of lottery grants. It will use the money to attempt to address the rise in HIV/STI diagnoses among men. The funding will enable it to target those who are typically hard to reach and aren’t engaging with mainstream services.
A bin strike planned for yesterday (Thursday) was called off after union bosses gave Brighton and Hove City Council more time to come up with a fresh proposal. The GMB union has also cancelled a strike planned for Tuesday (September 30) after meeting with the council earlier this week. A further strike, planned for October 3, however, remains on the cards if an agreement cannot be reached. Members will also continue with an ongoing work to rule stance.
Mental health workers in Brighton and Hove went on strike this week as part of a dispute over night shifts. Unison members voted 63% in favour of Wednesday’s action after being faced with having a nighttime rota imposed on them which staff say would be dangerous, unsafe and unfair. The staff, known as approved social workers, work for Brighton and Hove City Council. Unison said a voluntary rota at night had worked for years without any significant problems.

It almost beggars belief that people should even need to consider having to save the NHS Kevin Day @kevinhunterday
This week I was due to compere the launch in Brighton of Pledge to Save the NHS organised by Sussex Defend the NHS. Sadly, and ironically, I had to withdraw because of a family illness. A family illness that is being dealt with quickly and efficiently by the NHS - which is one of the very many reasons why it almost beggars belief that the people of your county and this country should even need to consider having to save and protect the National Health Service. There is quite a simple moral point to be made here: no one should be allowed to profit from the NHS. Full stop. Profit is about business not care. As usual though, in talking about the NHS, it's easier to give a personal reason why it's so important to retain it and spend the proper money on maintaining it and, where necessary, improving it.
My full name is Kevin Hunter Day because my life was saved at birth by Dr Hunter. It turned out he was Australian which makes it hard to boo them when the cricket comes round (but I give it a go). In the past six years, possibly because someone in my family may have been impolite to a magpie, the NHS has done more life saving. My dad had a triple by-pass (he was delighted, he's a terrible hypochondriac). My wife had breast cancer and an ambulance happened to be passing when I had a near fatal anaphylactic reaction to lime pickle. And my Edinburgh show this year was based on why I saw humour as a fit way to cope with trauma when my wife was diagnosed with a new cancer and a tricky little bugger called Type AA Amyloid. She's well now, because of the NHS. Because of the men and women from all over the world who work in our hospitals - because as letters to the Daily Mail point out, our hospitals are indeed filled with 'bloody foreigners' but most of them wearing a doctor's coat or
a nurse's uniform or cooking the meals or wheeling the trolleys. None of them are paid enough and all of them are making my wife better. She had operations, she had chemo, she had physio, she had Norovirus, she had mysterious infections - well, you get the picture. It was a nightmare, made even worse by me trying to make nurses laugh.
But through all of it we knew 24 hour help was only a phone call away. Clever, kind, sympathetic people were only a phone call away and they didn't invoice us. Yes, I know we pay for the NHS through tax but believe me, I've taken more out than I've ever put in. And yes I know as well that some people have had poor experiences,
but the NHS is responsible for me being here to write this and Ali being here to check the spelling and my dad being here to be proud of everyone who is fighting to save and protect the most wonderful organisation. Kevin Day is a stand-up comedian, comedy writer and sports presenter.
Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, and Nancy Platts, the Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown, spoke at the Defend the NHS rally attended by nearly 150 people at BHASVIC on Wednesday

The relationship between art and technology has existed for a long time, and will continue to do so as long as it is supported, nurtured and fed regularly. Brighton Digital Festival has encouraged this relationship and provided a space for it to grow, and we were delighted to be at the centre of it. At Lighthouse we held several events that focused on the place where art and technology meet, from Popathon Hack Jam that brought together filmmakers and technologists, to our annual digital culture conference Improving Reality. Along with its speakers, Improving Reality brought together a community that shows the depth and breadth of Lighthouse’s network, from technology experts and web developers, to artists, academics and filmmakers. Our conference was a prime example of how the Festival provided space for the community to talk, from those that create the technology we use, to those that interrogate it. This, we feel, is where great work is made. We saw a number of great arts and technology projects, from Wes Goatley’s excellent WIRELESS-
FIDELITY that allowed you to hear the expanse of our communication networks, to the work of the New Digital Archaeologists, Marcel Helmer and Henrik Nieratschker, who looked at how to handle our potential digital remains. Two of our Lighthouse Studio residents also worked on commissions for the festival; Seb Lee-Delisle’s Laser Light Synths dazzled audiences on the opening weekend, and Coralie Gourguechon’s collaboration with myself, Undercurrent, allowed audiences to discover the forgotten sounds of technology. Our relationship to copyright and image appropriation was interrogated by Matthew Plummer-Fernandez, and our networks jammed by Julian Oliver’s tank, both of whom were part of Phoenix’s The New Sublime. As a continual dialogue between the extent of the media agenda and our understanding of agency, our Festival exhibition Newstweek – Fact Fixing Bureau has shown the seams, intentions and misdirection of the world’s media. Particularly as we understand the ways it’s being delivered to us. Handing over power to the public has meant that hundreds of people have seen the potential for further interrogation of existing structures by artists using technology. Newstweek gives the capacity for serious play, satire and comedy, inspiring a dialogue into agency, control and
storytelling. One key thought I’ve been left with following Improving Reality and discussions around the news in Newstweek, is what our relationship is to a world mediated through technology? Questions of ephemerality and appropriation were raised, particularly as we often don’t know the full life span of an image, or a video, once it’s released in the wild. Something as commonplace as the selfie can be used to forensically reconstruct the site of a drone strike, placed into oppositional contexts, or become a tool for political violence. Our misunderstanding of the content we produce means that we won’t see the system until it breaks, and aren’t equipped to cope with the consequences, as seen recently with the news surrounding the leak of Jennifer Lawrence’s pictures to the public. As Nathan Jurgenson mentioned at Improving Reality, it’s not visibility that is necessarily a trap - that we are seen, but what we do with visibility that is the real trap. Natalie Kane is the Programme Assistant at Lighthouse. Their exhibition, Newstweek, is open until September 28 from 11am6pm. Natalie’s installation, Undercurrent, September 30 from 10am-6pm at 23 Brighton Square.

Will you lose your bus pass, fuel allowance, free TV licence, and free prescriptions? Paul Philo
Universal rights for pensioners gained in the past by groups representing older people including the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) - could be taken away or reduced by the next government. Be it Conservative, Labour, or a coalition. Yet these rights help to boost a poor average pension in our city. For the Conservatives, Ian Duncan Smith has already stated that pensioner’s benefits and pension should be included in the benefit cap. Many Tory MPs have called for the abolition of the rights to a bus pass, the winter fuel allowance, a free TV licence and free prescriptions.
Already the coalition government has reduced winter fuel allowance and is likely to continue to freeze a benefit that is aimed at stopping the cold. They have also abolished the concessionary coach travel subsidiary for older people. Nick Clegg, deputy leader of the coalition, has called for the meanstesting of these benefits. Ed Balls, the Labour shadow chancellor, has said the winter fuel allowance should be means-tested. Many, however, are worried that this is just the beginning of meanstesting of all pensioners rights. Peter Hain, the former Labour cabinet minister, said there were "three main problems" with the proposals from Mr Balls: "First, the money raised is estimated at £100 million, which is peanuts in terms of the wider welfare budget let
If you want to know more about how your candidates for government stand on these and other issues of interest to older people, come to the NPC Hustings at 6.30pm on Thursday, October 30, at the Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton. Speakers will include Nancy Platts, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown; Clarence Mitchell, the Conservative Party candidate for Brighton Pavilion; and Davy Jones, the Green Party candidate for Brighton Kemptown. Andy Winter, chief executive of BHT (Brighton Housing Trust) will be the chair; Dot Gibson, the NPC's national secretary, will introduce the speakers.
alone total government spending"; "Second, it begs the question: if winter fuel allowances are to be means-tested, then how far does the means-testing go? Does it stop at fuel or will TV licences, bus passes, and senior rail cards come next?; "Third, if middle Britain ceased to benefit from the welfare state through some of the few universal benefits that are left, how can we convince them to fund the larger part of that budget through their taxes?"
The Green Party has no policy on universal pensioner benefits, but calls for a big increase in the pension - to £200 a week - in the form of a Citizens Income, which would be much more than the additional pensioner benefits. We in the NPC would like to know if Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, would nevertheless fight for the existing rights in parliament if they are threatened. We would also like to know if a Green council would
maintain the bus pass for older people and disabled if the next government reduces or abolishes it. The bus pass is important to the city because it not only maintains the activity and health of elders and disabled people, but it also keeps some bus routes running which could otherwise be unprofitable and close. New selection of very short stories published Popular Brighton-based writing duo Felstead and Waddell have released a new book of short stories which are just 100 words long. House Paint & Other Stories is the latest collection from the writers, who have grown a cult following thanks to their website, www.felsteadandwaddell.co.uk, and performances at a range of spoken word festivals and events across the UK. Their stories are designed to fit
the modern age - a world of text messages, emails and tweets where communication is dominated by the concept of bite-sized chunks of easily digestible information. The 100 word story approach of House Paint & Other Stories provides a framework for a collection of portraits of the fantastically unaware, of the broken, of love lost and found, of the everyday examined through a cracked lense.
House Paint & Other Stories is in many ways a study of the form itself. Some of the stories are jokes, while others offer readers a glimpse of the sad, the lovely, the touching mundanity of modern life. There are stories that see a whole life lived in the course of the minute it takes to read about it. Stories that in opening up a moment reveal the emptiness and the fullness at the heart of things. Readers are sure to be moved, however quickly.
The Fascist And The Fly At 7.33am Manuel Albinini leaves for work. Every morning I watch this man. His hair is slick, his moustache is trimmed and the shine on his shoes reflects his sanitary and disciplined life. Late at night, when the lights are on, I can see into his apartment, and into a world of white tiles and marble floors – all Wagner and disinfectant. Christ it makes my teeth ache. Anyway, yesterday, whilst he was out, I posted a live fly through his letterbox. This morning at 7.36 I watched Manuel Albinini leave for work, his top button undone and looking distinctly unshaven.
Free Beer Last week, I read about a man who drove around the country giving away free ice creams. He said it made him happy. I thought this was a brilliant idea. I bought an old blue van and filled it with beers. I drove down to the beach and gave away the beer. The people at the beach loved it and kept coming back for more. It made me really happy to give them more and more beers. Then the beer ran out and the people went away. I sat in the back of the van. It was big and empty.
Points Opinions are a waste of time. I have a much better system. I give everything points out of 10. Here’s how it works. I give my house 8 out of 10. My car is a 9. My girlfriend is a 6 out of 10. She was a 7 but now she’s 6. My mum’s a 7. She is better than my girlfriend but not as good as the house. Playstation just gets 6, Xbox a 9 and walking in the countryside a 2. I give my current haircut an 8, the summer a 5, and my dog, Rupert, a 10.
Shouting Loudly Kingston B Rottam is a forty-five year old white man. He lives in London. He is very loud. From the moment he gets up, to the moment he goes to sleep, all he does is shout. He shouts at his wife, and he shouts at his children. At work he shouts at his employees. However, he reserves his absolute ire for public servants, at whom he screams until his voice packs up; until his mouth has emptied itself of spit; until his eyes turn red. As a result, you will always find Mr Rottam at the front of the queue.

Back to Creative Writing School by Bridget Whelan Yes. It’s that time of year. New school uniform. Lunch money and forged parental notes getting you off games. I count my blessings every day that I never have to go through the horrors of first day of term syndrome ever again. Although...I do miss that feeling of grappling with a new subject, the thrill of learning something new. I am trying to learn Italian; how I wish I’d paid more attention to grammar at school. This is the perfect book for anyone even thinking about doing some creative writing, in whatever form that may take. Poetry, plays, novels anything. It’s all about defeating the blank page. It’s written by a true professional and it’s
crammed full of practical and sensible advice. It will help you produce the best kind of writing that you can achieve. Some simple questions in the exercise "Inventing People" help you get into the skin of your character (if there were in a bar, what sort of drink would they order?). My favourite exercise was entitled "Hit and Miss Bibliomancy", as I adore the very thought of a bit of bibliomancy - technically, it’s making a prediction by randomly opening a book - and use it often to decide such lifechanging decisions such as, is it time for a gin and tonic yet? Or should I take that trip to Croatia by canoe after all? I urge to read this if you thinking of writing, it’s immensely useful. And, you don’t even have to be wearing a uniform.

Vision driven by core values I think it is important at this stage that we should pause and consider our vision for education at Hove Park. Our vision for education at Hove Park is driven by some fundamental core values that relate to children of all abilities and backgrounds having the same access to a worldclass education. That is why we put achievement first and that is why we strive to ensure that no child is disadvantaged by either their economic background or by any other characteristic that may present itself as a potential barrier to success. At Hove Park we are especially passionate about teaching. We recognise that the quality of any school system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers and that is why we place such an emphasis on the craft of teaching. We are really proud of our teaching staff and our wider workforce which are both of the highest calibre.
Council
Police quiz housing boss
Brighton and Hove City Council’s suspended head of housing, Jugal Sharma, has been questioned by police investigating alleged contracts fraud worth £18 million. The 53-year-old was interviewed under caution by appointment at the local custody centre earlier this week. The investigation was launched by the police’s economic crime unit in November last year following an initial investigation by the council’s own internal audit team. Police are looking into allegations of the improper awarding of council contracts over the past ten years.

Planning
March headed elsewhere ÂŁ100m scheme approval
The controversial March for England will not be held in Brighton and Hove next year, according to organisers. The annual march, which takes place on the weekend closest to St George’s Day, has regularly attracted counter protests from anti-fascists and is estimated to have cost local businesses millions of pounds on top of a hefty police bill for the city. Organisers, however, have told supporters next year’s march will take place in the north of England, although it could return in 2016.
An ambitious ÂŁ100 million plan to transform the site of an old fruit and veg market has been approved. Brighton and Hove City Council gave the Circus Street development the go-ahead at a meeting despite concern over the impact of the scheme. Councillors decided the benefits of the scheme, which includes a seven-story office building, dance studio and accommodation for hundreds of students, outweighed the negatives. Those benefits include 232 fulltime jobs and the development could generate ÂŁ200 million for the local economy over ten years.

UNDERCLIFF RUN FOR WOMEN 2014
ĂĽ @mrmarksteel: Bugger my boots we've won. Academy defeated after 6 month brilliant campaign. I'm off for a whisky.
An Independent View The headteacher and governors of Hove Park School deserve a lot of credit for deciding not to become an academy. Nobody ever doubted their commitment to the interests of the students in their care. In a highly-charged debate, however, it takes a brave person to accept those on the other side of the debate may have a point. That is true leadership. Hove Park School is one of the many successes of education in Brighton and Hove. It is a school on its way up - and much of the credit must go to Derek Trimmer, the headteacher, and his staff.
Credit, of course, must also go to the community of parents and carers who did what all good schools want them to do. They got stuck in - because they cared. Because Hove Park School is their school. Most opposition politicians, however, built a fence and then sat on it. They self-righteously preached about “leaving it to those involved to decide. They played it safe and said they would abide by whatever was decided. That’s not leadership. That’s small-minded politics, in a bighearted city.

The number of wild flowers and wildlife has skyrocketed at Saltdean Oval since the decision was taken to leave parts of the park unmown. Researchers from the University of Sussex have monitored areas of the park for the last year and found the blocks of uncut land saw a three-fold increase in the density of flowers. The numbers of flower-visiting insects such as bees and butterflies was up to five times higher than in areas mown every two weeks.

A proposal to expand St Andrew’s CoE primary school in Hove in time for the new intake in September next year has taken a big step forward. Brighton and Hove City Council has agreed for statutory notices explaining the plans to be published with a view to making a final decision in November. The plans have been changed after an initial consultation. New classrooms would now be provided on the Haddington Street car park, rather than the school playgrounds.

Food for thought about how rubbish we are at recycling Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
There can be no doubt that if you are the sort of person who wants to recycle, then Brighton and Hove City Council have advice to give on recycling just about anything from an old TV to an item containing asbestos. There will be information somewhere to deal with the issue and our local authority are, I am sure, extremely pleased with themselves. This is all very well and good and is a great help to those of us who are prepared to make that little extra effort to recycle. There is, however, precious little - if anything - going on to educate people who can't be bothered even to place their bottles in a bottle bank. Nor do we see any enforcement whatsoever against the selfish people who dump old mattresses and unwanted furniture in or next to the communal black bins. We haven't got the staff to police
the-spot £1,000 fine, for example, are you likely to do it again? As a nation, we need also to look more closely about how we deal with waste generally - and not just in the ideological way we seem to be tackling issues at present. Why, for instance, have we allowed that great idea of deposits on bottles to slip away from us? What a great way of dealing with glass-recycling that was. There was little See how many rogue waste from glass in the builders want to fly-tip days when a couple of old pence was added in our bins, if they think to the price of a bottled half a dozen people are drink purchased from likely to take their vehicle a shop or off-licence. What's wrong with registration number” having a 10p deposit these days. There would Equally, it might make people be much less broken glass lying think twice before dumping that about our streets then - of that, I old mattress next to the communal am certain. Also what - if anything - is being bins if a passer-by is likely to take a quick photo of them with a mobile done to stop the amount of paper waste being poked through your phone. The fines, however, need to be front door with useless irrelevant pretty harsh in order to make a information from energy companies difference. If you have to pay an on- and the like. Nobody ever reads it, I hear them saying. Well actually, you don't need to. All that's needed is a bit of common sense and lateral thinking. Let's offer £100 reward to anyone who can give information leading to successful prosecutions. See how many rogue builders want to flytip in our bins, if they think half a dozen people are likely to take their vehicle registration number.
We need a fresh approach to not creating so much waste in the first place
that rubbish and in what is now a relatively paper-less society, this is seen by many as a complete waste of time and an insult to all we try to do and achieve in respect to recycling. It's good news that plastic bags are allegedly to be phased out in the major supermarkets. But is that really going far enough? What about all the plastic bottles and packaging, none of which does much to improve the product? It would be so much better if we could revert to glass bottles with deposits and look at alternatives

Perhaps we really need a fresh approach to the whole issue of reducing waste by not creating so much in the first place. As an exercise, try doing the weekly shop and then unwrap everything putting all the packaging into a pile. It certainly makes you think when it is apparent how much rubbish you have just purchased in the supermarket. Food for thought anyway...if you will excuse the pun.

The piano on the concourse is now waiting to be played Graham Chainey
A piano that was installed on the concourse at Brighton railway station back in August has proved popular with travellers. It was the brainchild of Peter Kyle, a parliamentary candidate for Hove in next year’s elections, who - having noticed one on the concourse at St Pancras Station in London - offered to cover the costs. Writing to Southern Rail to make his formal offer, he said: “Think of the potential to delight passengers as they spend a moment waiting for a train, or at other times when it could dissipate the frustration felt by people facing delays or those who have been battered by the weather on their journey to the station.” Mr Kyle, who is not musical, engagingly promised never to play it himself. I admit I was sceptical about the proposal at the time, on the grounds that placing a musical instrument in such a public place was inviting it to be vandalised.
I recalled how, when the council left pianos on the city’s streets during the White Night event a couple of years ago, many were damaged or stolen. I noted how the St Pancras piano that Mr Kyle was pictured with already looked a wreck, with broken keys and ivories ripped off, and probably sounded dreadful. I thought it would be unfair to put a decent instrument in such a location, while if it was not a decent instrument only undesirables would be attracted by it. What I had not foreseen was that the instrument might be customised. Brighton Piano Warehouse in Bonchurch Road, commissioned by Mr Kyle at a cost of £1,500, have decorated the piano in jolly striped colours (Lewes artist Paul Harrison was responsible) with what they call a “Punch and Judy theme”, with perspex windows on the front allowing one to see something of the workings inside and the fetching inscription “Please Play Me” above the keyboard. Even the wooden stool is in matching red and yellow. Well, having heard so much
about it, I simply had to see it for myself. When a friend and I arrived at the station the other day to tinkle its ivories, we were initially disappointed to find it padlocked and the stool removed. But an obliging official soon opened it for us. I have to say it’s not the most brilliant instrument. It’s an old Chappell, that appears to have reached Brighton via Bishop Auckland. The first thing I noticed was three missing keytops, gone since installation. Not a good sign. We were told it was locked because children tend to bang around on it. It’s also been moved back from its original position, as the noise was proving distracting to barrier staff. My advice to anyone contemplating playing this piano would be as follows: 1) Do wear a hat. Or anything flamboyant. To match the flamboyance of the instrument; 2) Don’t try to play anything too serious or delicate: no late Beethoven or ethereal Debussy, I think. Chopin waltzes and mazurkas seemed to go down
Be prepared for the odd drink-fuelled lout, thumping the bass as he staggers by (Photograph: Bruce Leigh)
all right, and anything with a bit of a lilt - think Gershwin or Joplin - will do fine; 3) You need to play with more theatre, more histrionics, than you would in your own livingroom. This is a vast vacuous acoustic, with other things going on. You are competing with train noises, screetchy announcements, ticket machines, general hubbub; 4) You may be totally ignored, or
you may draw an appreciative scrummage around you, with cameras flashing and applause. And be prepared for the odd drink-fuelled lout, as happened to me, thumping the bass as he staggers by, in the middle of the E flat nocturne.

Business Chamber tips Wendy Ann Greenhalgh
Wendy Ann Greenhalgh of New Writing South shares tips on creative writing for business. Writing at work can become a bit of a chore. All those emails and reports don’t often leave much room for creativity. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are things anyone can do to be more creative: Explore your vocabulary Choose a limited dictionary of words and see how many different ways and in what combinations you can use those words. This encourages your creative mind to come up with multiple meanings and associations around language clusters. Use your imagination Getting creative is all about thinking laterally - mind-map, brainstorm, create word collages around your ideas - then let your imagination work freely. No tangent is too oblique and when it comes to creative writing - left-of-field is exactly where you want to be. Use two words
as a starting point and see if you can form a chain of connections between them, the more complex the chain the better. Tell Stories Stories reveal relationships; they are how we communicate about our businesses and ourselves. Write about how you came to be sitting in your desk, doing the work you do. Now write your colleague's story. If you don't know all the details, first make them up for fun, and then go and chat to them to complete their story. Now, how about a product or a service? How could you write its story? Again, you can start by making it up for fun, like a bedtime story for the kids - ‘once upon a time...’ - now tell its real-life story. Everyone has a creative streak, and it’s just about unearthing it! Wendy’s Bite-sized learning session, Creative writing at work, is taking place on Tuesday, September 30, 9.30am until 11.30am at Sussex County Cricket Ground. The grounds of a hospice have been given a makeover thanks to volunteers from Southern Water. Four employees from the water company dug, swept and pruned the grounds of Martlets Hospice, in Wayfield Avenue, Hove, which cares for terminally ill patients. The employees helped out as part of Southern Water’s volunteer scheme which allows staff to spend two days, every year, working for their chosen charity or community group. Sarah Farrant, Southern Water’s business change manager, was among the volunteers. She said: “We were all really pleased to be doing something to help our local community and Martlets Hospice is a really worthwhile charity to support. It provides a vital service to people at a very difficult and sad time and we were happy to play a small part in helping keep its important outdoor space looking good.” Elizabeth Baxter, head of major individual and business giving at Martlets Hospice, said: “We are delighted that Southern Water employees have chosen to volunteer in the hospice gardens. Our volunteer gardeners are so vital to us as they help to keep our gardens
well-maintained and beautiful for our patients and their visitors. Our in-patient rooms look out onto our gardens so help in creating and maintaining a beautiful outdoor environment is incredibly important. We know that our patients and their visitors really appreciate our gardens so we are most grateful to all the Southern Water staff who volunteered and work so hard on our behalf.” Every year the different departments within Southern Water choose a charity to support.

Entrepreneur on young gun list
Nutshell Construction completes state-of-the-art tasting room in Sussex
Rob Hill, CEO and founder of Brighton-based award-winning events company The Eventa Group: Henheaven.co.uk, thestagcompany. com and Eventa.co.uk has been named one of the UK’s most outstanding entrepreneurs aged 35 and under. Growing Business unveiled its Young Guns Class of 2014 list, made up of 54 entrepreneurs behind 30 of the country’s fastest-growing firms – with Mr Hill included. He joins an alumni already containing the founders of 330 businesses named since the Young Guns awards began in 2003. A delighted Mr Hill said: “I am honored to be part of the Young Guns alumni. It has taken a lot of hard work over the last ten years to grow the Eventa Group to where it is today. “With a strong team of employees and innovative management team I am looking forward to further development of the business and expanding into other fields.” The award winning Eventa Group was founded in 2004 by Mr Hill and his business partner Nick Shuff, 39, and has seen remarkable growth over the last three years.
Sussex-based family run building firm Nutshell Construction has celebrated the completion of the newly built, state-of-the-art wine tasting room for award-winning vineyard, Ridgeview Estate. The Nutshell team was tasked to build a highly complex tasting room designed by Brighton-based Yelo Architects. The room is an interpretation of its view over the Sussex Downs vineyard, using angular walls to manipulate light, just as the vines and leaves change in colour as the light and seasons change. Ridgeview, Nutshell Construction and Yelo Architects formally opened the tasting room earlier this week with a private wine tasting event for partners, friends and family. The Ridgeview tasting room is one of many exciting projects Nutshell has worked on this year. To keep up with demand, they have also appointed three additional office-based staff members and increased their contracted workforce by 100% to a total of 40 from this time last year. Founded seven years ago by three members of one of Sussex’s
oldest families, the firm’s current projects include an underground swimming pool and spa complex for a large property in Hampshire. They are also working on a major refurbishment and extension of a historic 17th-century home in Mid-Sussex. These, together with some fascinating work on Grade 1 and Grade 2 listed buildings around Brighton and Hove make for an interesting portfolio of projects. Nutshell projects continue to grow in both size and prestige. In the past 18 months the average value of a Nutshell project has more than doubled to £300,000. Ben Copper, MD and one of Nutshell’s founders, said: “Ridgeview has been one of our most challenging builds to date, but we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. “The 100% growth in turnover and accompanying profit from the last financial year is a big milestone for Nutshell and we are continuing to up-scale our investment to meet growing demand. “It’s been a very exciting year for us so far – we can’t wait to see what will come our way next.”
Better together or apart? For several weeks now every time I sat in one of our many coffee shops or opened a newspaper I have been intrigued by the public conversation that has been going on around whether Scotland should stay or go. I personally am pleased the vote was to stay but will continue to follow the aftermath closely. As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator working with couples ending their relationship I have been struck by how the campaign and vote last week had many parallels with the process I see many of my clients go through when they part. David Cameron built his speeches on begging Scotland not to break up a cherished relationship, which has been good for so long… promising things would change. Last weeks media coverage became compulsive viewing. Would Scotland stay with its faithful old partner or be seduced by promises of a new start in a relationship that might be liberating and more equal? This painful decision when it came had been a long time coming. Few couples decide to separate overnight – in fact the average period of time it takes a relationship to break down is around two years. More often than not the decision to approach a lawyer is led by one partner. One or both will would be losing if the relationship formally ends.
Like the Yes Campaign both partners will be asking themselves are we Better Together? Some will vote yes some no. Like the majority of Scots some couples will weigh up what change means and decide to stay – the relationship is ‘good enough’. Like the Scots to vote for No Change is a hard decision but for some it will be the right one. They will take stock of the status quo and make positive changes. like a ‘broken ’ relationship is that once promises have been made they all too quickly get forgotten. Couples who decide to stay together will only do so successfully if they honour promises made when they truly feared losing the relationship. There will need to be honest discussion about what real change means. Like the referendum such conversations can become charged and often miss the point. To stop a relationship ending you both have to agree to work together. Not manipulate, bully or threaten. Moreover separating when you have children means that whilst you may no longer have the same dependency on each you will have to work at having a new sort of relationship. The Collaborative process and mediation takes into account that old habits and problems do not solve themselves – where a couple has decided to split lawyers like myself will help couples pin down those good intentions. And stick to them! Like the referendum its not a simple yes or no!

A lot has changed since then and publication of performance data by successive governments is routine. Parents have always been wiser than the education establishment gives them credit for. This week's must-see The Importance of Being Earnest Theatre Royal Monday (September 29) until October 4, 7.45pm nightly with 2.30pm matinees on Thursday and Saturday A new production of Oscar Wild’s comic masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest, is at the Theatre Royal this week direct from the West End. Dubbed by Wilde himself ‘a trivial comedy for serious people’, the production takes this sentiment to heart and delivers an entirely faithful, but nonetheless unique, setting to one of the greatest theatrical comedies. The play elegantly lampoons the hypocrisies of Victorian society and opens as two bachelors, the dependable, John Worthing (Martin Jarvis) and upper class playboy Algernon Moncrieff (Nigel Havers), feel compelled to create different identities in order to pursue two eligible ladies Cecily Cardew (Christine Kavanagh) and Gwendolyn Fairfax (Cherie Lunghi).
The hilarious misadventures which result from their subterfuge; their brushes with the redoubtable Lady Bracknell (Siân Phillips) and the uptight Miss Prism (Rosalind Ayres) result in a plot that twists and fizzles with some of the finest dialogue to be found in theatre. Acclaimed comic novelist, Simon Brett, was commissioned to create an original context for the play and the result brings Wilde’s genius afresh to new audiences. To miss one showing could be considered unfortunate. To miss an entire week would be carelessness. Tickets, priced between £11.90 and £42.40, online at: www.atgtickets. com or by calling 0844 871 7650.
Tickets on sale now The Script Brighton Centre Thursday, March 10 2015 Tickets to the hugely-popular Irish three-piece The Script go on sale today (Friday) ahead of their recently-announced Brighton Centre date in March next year. The tour comes hot on the heels of the releases of their fourth album, No Sound Without Silence, which shot straight to the top of the UK iTunes chart and the top ten in a further 42 other countries.
No Sound Without Silence is the sound of a band firing on all cylinders and channelling the momentum of their last, rocketpowered campaign. The trio of songwriters had so many ideas while touring last year, they were busting out of the specially built mobile recording studio they’d taken with them on the tour bus. They finished touring their last album at the end of last year, took a scant couple of weeks off, then quickly re-entered their studios
in London and Dublin. The Script have sold over 20 million records, and all three of their albums have been multiplatinum. Hall Of Fame, the lead single from last album, #3, was a worldwide number one single with over 5 million sales, 142 million YouTube views, and over 100 million Spotify plays. Tickets are £27.50 and £35, plus booking fees, and fans will be limited to six per booking. Available now online at: www. brightoncentre.co.uk or by calling 0844 847 1515.

A stunning new detached home in the sought-after Hove Park district. Five good-size bedrooms with two en-suites, a family bathroom and ground-floor WC, generous ground-floor living accommodation with underfloor heating. Stylish fitted kitchen with appliances and separate utility.
This roomy, recently-built, light and bright four bedroom family home is spread over three floors and offers family living with space and style. Situated at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, off the pretty and historical Dean Court Road in Rottingdean and affording views to the Downs and the sea in the distance.
A whole, un-modernised Victorian villa over 2774 square feet - two flats and a house - in need of complete renovation and reconfiguration throughout. It is huge and rich in potential - and would make an exciting project for someone who has the necessary time and energy to invest.

What is the market doing? It is very hard for anyone, estate agents sometimes included (!), to get a handle on what the property market is doing when different sources provide different figures for property prices, activity and trends. There are several sources of house price data for the UK, the main ones being the Land Registry, the Office of National Statistics (ONS), the Halifax and Nationwide building societies, and the property portals, Rightmove and Zoopla. Nowhere is the inconsistency you mention more dramatic than that between the two “official” sets of figures, compiled by the ONS and the Land Registry. Take the most recent ones, covering the year to July. According to the ONS, average house prices rose 11.7% during this period to stand at £272,000. The Land Registry, on the other hand, put average prices at £175,653 – very nearly £100,000 lower. Similar, though less striking, discrepancies exist elsewhere too. Why? Well, partly because the various indices are actually measuring different things. The ONS reports, for example, are based on mortgage lending data for the whole of the UK, while the
Land Registry index is based on a complete register of all residential sales – but, only in England and Wales. Moreover, for reasons best known to itself, the Land Registry also excludes all new-build sales! Similarly, Rightmove tracks sellers’ asking prices, not actual selling prices. As a result, it tends to be more volatile than other indices, rising and falling relatively rapidly in line with changing market sentiment. Finally, the Nationwide and
Haifax base their calculations on their own mortgage activity – which clearly excludes all cash transactions…In Brighton and Hove, we have quite a high level of cash purchases as many buyers are selling more expensive properties in London to move here and, although our demographic is getting younger, a substantial number of buyers are older and buying with cash. This can seriously skew the building society figures, especially as a
large number of borrowers buy new – build, not on Land Registry lists. All very confusing! The other main reason for discrepancies between the various indices lies in the different approaches they each take to tackling the one big problem with all house price data: the only figures available are those relating to properties that are actually sold in a given period – which may (or may not) be representative of the national housing stock as a whole. For example, what do you do if more first time buyer properties just happen to be sold in one month, and more moated manor houses the next? You can’t simply announce that “average prices” have shot up from £150,000 to £2
million! So, the raw house price data has to be “mix-adjusted” (to use statisticians’ jargon) to take account of such variables. And each index uses its own formula to do this. So, how to make sense of it all? It may be best to ignore all the figures quoted in the national press – and ask your friendly local estate agent instead! If they have long-standing local knowledge and can identify the particularities of your location and property, they will be the best barometer of the price for you. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. Unless you’re quite partial to an M&S meal deal or other convenience foods, Brighton Station as a food destination is usually hugely over looked. But luckily, after a long remodel, this general public hub is starting to appeal to more than just commuters, travellers and train spotters. Founded by Sussex company Greenwell & Tipple, whose former successes lie with the Geronimo Inn collective, The Cyclist Refreshment Room aims to introduce affordable, locally sourced, fresh, home-cooked food to train stations, viewing them as a gateway to an as yet, fairly untapped market. And what a splendid idea. Why not rejuvenate stations into being the romantic place where people used to meet, converse, drink and date? Think Brief Encounter and you’re half way there. The Cyclist nods towards this black and white era with shoddy suitcases, rustic decor and copious amounts of charm. The menu spans from breakfast

Sharing boards - charcuterie, cheese or seafood - start at £12 and would make a great pre or post journey nibble, easily washed down with a bottle of red, white or rose. It’s worth noting that the alcohol menu is allencompassing and it was great to see local craft ales from Brighton Bier and Longman Brewery. The dinner menu originally started as small plates but has slowly evolved into larger, homecomfort food. Wild mushroom risotto, open fish-finger sandwich and sirloin steak featured alongside daily specials. We decided to opt for the Slow Braised Pork Shoulder with celeriac, apple and peas (£12), Macaroni Cheese (£8.50) with side orders of chips (£2.50) and broccoli with chilli and garlic (£3.50), washed down with a bottle of cherry tainted, earthy Spanish Merlot (£18). shoulder was tender and didn’t carry too much fat, rendering the dish light and refreshing, especially when paired with the aforementioned vegetable selection. The apple did lack a punch and the celeriac could have easily been replaced with a more filling mashed potato, but it’s good to see The Cyclist toying with menu ideas and flavour combinations. The Macaroni and Cheese was also welcomed at the metallic, broad table. Curls of pasta lay imbedded in a rich and warming cheese sauce - home cooking and comfort food at its best. The broccoli retained a good bite to it, yet could have done with a touch more chilli and garlic to boost the flavour. The portions left enough room for dessert, and I plumbed for the Lemon and Raspberry Crème Brûlée (£5.50), served with homemade shortbread biscuit. F-u-n-n-y, isn’t it, the things you do as parents? Like spelling out certain words so that your children don’t catch on to their meaning. It started with little things like j-u-i-c-e or the p-ar-k - lest we mention the fateful word too soon or in some other context and Tibbons find his hopes simultaneously raised and dashed. Oh, and then there’s the small matter of swear words too. After a while it spread to other, rather unnecessary, words like when making a trip to the f-r-i-d-g-e. Granted, on occasion it might contain fancies such as juice that need spelling out, but it’s unlikely to cause a stir in and of itself. And yet there Daddy-O was, doing it anyway. Having read this far, you will doubtless have realised two things. Firstly, this is an annoying habit. Secondly, it is pervasive. Not only has it spilled over into this column, it has found its way into my working life where I now ask colleagues if they would like to m-e-e-t to discuss. (At least the days of me waving at them my opening and closing my fist and saying buhbye are behind us). Like so many annoying habits that have gone before it, it’s also surprisingly hard to break. And believe me, I have tried. But you see if you can talk through an average shopping list in front of a toddler without giving rise to calls for each tasty morsel that gets mentioned. Sometimes needs m-u-s-t. Of course, there is going to come a time when the old spelling trick lets us down - and given that Tibbons has started to “read” to himself at night, this may be closer than we think. Travel Halkidiki heaven for holidaymakers in search of sun and fun in Greece Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Exactly 30 years ago, I visited Greece for the first time. The military junta had fallen only days earlier. Democracy had come home - and I fell in love with a people I had previously known only from reading Homer. Or at least as much of it as my A-level Greek could decipher. Since then, I have visited Greece and its islands - and its ancient outposts in Italy and Turkey - almost every year. From Athens to Zacynthus, experiencing Greece is the alphaomega of holiday enjoyment: Crete and Cephalonia are particular favourites, not forgetting Ithaca, home to Odysseus. So are Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Delos, Samos, Lesbos, Hydra, Aegina, Sciathos, Skopelos, Alonyssos, Lemnos, Naxos, Paros, and Kos. And, of course, the Peloponnese (Mycenae, Corinth, Pylos, Olympia, Nafplion, Epidaurus) and Delphi... You get the picture. I love Greece. So why had I never visited Halkidiki? There are several reasons, perhaps the most relevant is its lack of ancient sites (although Olynthus, in a fertile plain at the head of the Gulf of Torone, is a wonder). Another is the fact that it is quite far north, especially if you choose to visit near the beginning
or end of the season. Which my wife, Sue, and I frequently do. When the chance of two weeks away presented itself - to work on content for today’s Brighton & Hove Independent education magazine - we jumped at it. Around the swimming pool at the Bella Grecia, a compact and friendly, family-run hotel of 22 rooms, there was talk of the late deals everyone had got: in our case, it was £1,060 for two weeks self-catering for two people, including transfers and baggage, with Thomson. A perfect destination matched the fantastic value-for-money deal. Having resisted the temptation to check it out on TripAdvisor, Bella Grecia - and its owner, Panos - were a joy: clean and spacious rooms, a fine pool, and a modest bar. And free wifi. Heaven!

The nearest resort was Hanioti, one of the most family-friendly resorts on Kassandra, the western-most of the three that comprise Halkidiki. As usual, a hire care - for about £23 a day - was an affordable advantage, enabling us to visit all the main resorts on Kassandra (Afitos and Nea Scione were particularly attractive) and even manage a day-trip to Thessaloniki, to spend a marvellous three hours at the archaeological museum - which, by the way, has the best ouzo and bites at its Terra Antiqua café. One final point for fans of kleftiko and stifado, and all things fish. Jurlique’s “Purely AgeDefying Hand Treatment” includes extracts of daisy, licorice and black elder to reduce the appearance of fine lines, age spots and discoloration. It hydrates and softens. This treatment changes how your hands feel and is lovely to use. My nose perked up with the Rose Hand Cream. This is for frequent use, and features
calendula and viola to deeply hydrate with sumptuous biodynamic ingredients freshly grown in Australia. It almost goes without saying - but there are no petrochemicals, parabens, silicones, artificial colours or fragrances in any Jurlique products. Jurlique specialises in rose products. As I am a fan of mists and spritzes, I had a go with their Rosewater Balancing Mist. It is really intense with aloe and marshmallow to give your face a sweet, dewy boost. Very pampering. The new jewel in their antiageing crown is Nutri-Define Multi-Correcting Day Cream. It has squalane and rapeseed oils, which restore balance to the lipid barrier - £72 for 50ml and richly textured for daylong luminosity. This feels like the absolute best that your

Seagulls draw Tottenham in Capital One Cup after finally reaching round four
Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Brighton and Hove Albion will play Premier League Tottenham Hotspur in the Capital One Cup after reaching the fourth round for the first time since the 1979/80 season. The Seagulls will travel to White Hart Lane in the week beginning October 27 but it is not yet clear whether the game will take place on the Tuesday or Wednesday. Brighton’s hosts would no doubt prefer a Wednesday game. Spurs play at home to Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League the Thursday before, shifting their Premier League match with Newcastle United to the Sunday. A Tuesday game would therefore afford Spurs minimal recovery time before facing the Seagulls, although their manager Mauricio Pochettino may field a muchchanged side regardless. The Argentinian made 11 changes for this week’s win over Nottingham
Forest. Brighton face Rotherham on the preceding Saturday but do have an away game with Bournemouth scheduled for the Friday night, meaning the Seagulls would surely prefer a Tuesday night game. The last time the Albion met Spurs in a competitive fixture was back in 2005 when a Richard Carpenter free-kick looked to have secured an FA Cup replay for the Seagulls before Robbie Keane broke the hearts of the travelling Brighton fans with a late winner. Brighton were arguably the better team that day and the thousands of supporters who will no doubt head to the capital next month will be hoping for a similar performance, albeit with a better result. Mark McGhee was in charge that day but current Brighton manager Sami Hyypia is no stranger to taking on Spurs on their own soil. As a Liverpool player he made a number of appearances at White Hart Lane,
although he admits he has mixed memories of the stadium. He told Brighton’s official website: “I have some good and bad memories, most of the time bad. Hopefully we can change that. “It’s another challenge. We’ll go there to play our game and try to win.” Before then, however, Brighton have a run of important league fixtures, not least next Tuesday’s home game with Cardiff City. The match with the Bluebirds is the first of a series of midweek games included in the club’s Floodlit Five ticket package. The deal covers the home matches against Cardiff, Wigan, Leeds, Derby and Huddersfield and allows supporters to pay from just £25 per match rather than the full price they would have to stump off if bought individually. Straight from the commentary box It was a comfortable win in the end. Albion through to the last 16 of the league cup for the first time in 34 years. The prize? A trip to White Hart Lane to take on Premier League side Spurs. I wasn’t covering the Albion last time the two sides met competitively, but I feel like I know the game so well. Three of my summarisers, recent and current, played in the heart of the defence that night, Guy Butters, Adam Virgo and Adam Hinshelwood. The final member of the back four was Kerry Mayo who has also popped up as a guest on occasion during the show. During their time on the microphone alongside me all of the stalwarts have chatted about that game and how Albion played so well but failed to overcome their opponents. The Tottenham line-up that night included Ledley King, Robbie Keane, Jermaine
Defoe and Michael Carrick. Not bad. Albion’s prospects this October are decent with Mauriccio Pocchettino using second string players in the competition. Albion will be underdogs for the first time this season but that may well suit them. It will no doubt be a night to remember but also be a busy week, the game sandwiched between Rotherham at home the previous Saturday and Bournemouth away on the Friday. Before all that though Albion must get back to winning ways in the Championship. In such a tight division it’s imperative not to fall behind but after a trip to the leaders this weekend and possibly two games against former managers, we will, for the first time, be able to properly assess the start to Sami Hyypiä’s first season.

Match preview: Nottingham Forest v Brighton and Hove Albion
Seagulls face difficult task to fell Tricky Trees on home soil Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Brighton and Hove Albion meet Nottingham Forest at the City Ground tomorrow (Saturday) buoyed by their midweek win at Burton but knowing the Championship’s early pacesetters represent a far tougher challenge. The Seagulls clinched an encouraging and ultimately comfortable 3-0 away win in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night, with a number of players staking a claim for a start in the East Midlands tomorrow. One such stand-out performer was Paddy McCourt. The mercurial former Celtic and Barnsley attacking talent may have the look of an unkempt ageing mid-90s indie band member, but with the ball at his feet he is a footballing dreamweaver capable of genuine magic. He impressed from the bench against Blackpool last weekend and surely did enough from the start at Burton to be considered for a start at Forest. The only question marks over his suitability for a starting role so far have been fitness-related. His boss, though, is confident McCourt is on the right path to regular first team action. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s match, Sami Hyypiä told the club’s website: “Paddy’s a very good player on the ball, he can see passes, he can dribble and is quite calm on the ball. “He trusts his skills and he has the quality to hurt people with his passing and dribbling. “We need to see for Saturday
Paddy McCourt, photographed in action at Burton Albion by Paul Hazlewood, has impressed his manager
what the situation is, but he’s much fitter.” Rohan Ince and Craig MackailSmith did their chances no harm either. Both were on the score sheet and Ince could get the nod alongside Danny Holla in midfield, with Hyypiä no doubt mindful of Forest’s impressive attacking pedigree. Ince would provide a physical shield in front of a back four tasked with repelling the threat of Brit Assombalonga. The £5 million summer signing has a division high eight league goals already this campaign, a figure which works out at a massive 47% of his team’s total league goals. Rather ominously, Assombalonga was rested during Forest’s close-fought 3-1 Capital One Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. In fact, Assombalonga has quite a supporting cast at
the City Ground. Fellow summer signing Michail Antonio has started the season in every bit as impressive form as the striker. Antonio, who can operate in a range of attacking positions, has four goals and five assists from the opening eight games. Elsewhere, the evergreen Andy Reid is still string-pulling to his heart’s content in central positions while in Chris Burke, Henri Lansbury and Matty Fryatt, Forest manager Stuart Pearce has an enviable amount of attacking options. Forest have won three and drawn one at home in the league this season – scoring 12 goals and conceding four. It won’t be easy for the Seagulls, but tomorrow’s game does represent a first real opportunity for Hyypiä’s squad to test itself against the division’s best.

Our attitude was good. The players did not drop the level of what they can do and when you have that kind of approach, the mentality is to maintain your level, or even raise it, and keep the tempo, and try to do the right things for 90 minutes then you make it easier for yourself. “We are in the next round, that’s the most important thing. It was a professional performance. We spoke about it before the game; that we needed the right attitude to start well and go for 90 minutes. Most of the time, the players did that and it was a comfortable win. “It’s good that we got an early goal, moved the ball well and scored three. Hopefully we can take some confidence into the game on Saturday in Nottingham with this performance.”

With Brighton and Hove Albion facing the Championship’s joint highest-scoring team in Nottingham Forest, there will be an extra emphasis on the Seagulls’ defence. Lewis Dunk and Gordon Greer have shown signs of forging a decent defensive partnership in a new system which encourages the full backs to spend as much time attacking as they do in and around their own box.
