Groups call for City Plan Labour attacks strike by refuse workers support after council and GMB fail to settle dispute Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Labour leader Warren Morgan has turned on GMB members and criticised them for going ahead with industrial action today (Friday) in the long-running dispute involving refuse workers. Councillor Morgan said: “Residents will have run out of patience on this and we do not see that further action is justified in light of the offer from the council. “We urge those taking action to think again and return to work, so that people across the city who have no part in this dispute can once again have their bins collected.”
Conservatives welcomed Cllr Morgan’s new stance – as all sides apologised for the continual disruption. Mark Turner, of the GMB, which represents truck drivers at the centre of the dispute, said: “We have had a number of discussions with council officers which culminated in a proposal they put forward to attempt to avert current action. “Unfortunately, our members rejected this because the timeframes that were set by the council weren’t considered reasonable and they still have little confidence management would meaningfully look at their job description and take into
Eight organisations - including housing charities and trade unions - have urged councillors to unite in a bid to get the best City Plan possible. In a statement published today (Friday), they called on politicians of all parties to agree a plan that will protect Brighton and Hove’s "built environment, green spaces, communities and the local economy for years to come”. Unless the three main parties - the Greens, Conservatives and Labour - can reach agreement, the proposed planning blueprint for the next 15 years could be thrown out by a government inspector. All sides apologise for rubbish disruption > Continued from page 1 account the professional element of their driving licence. “We have informed the council today of the position, but have clearly stated that we are willing to continue discussions to attempt to resolve the situation “We can only apologise again for the effect this has on the public, but this is not of our members’ making and we have been trying to resolve this for a considerable number of weeks before taking any industrial action.” Geoff Raw, Brighton and Hove City Council’s executive director for environment, development and housing, said: “I am really disappointed that we have been unable to reach an agreement with the GMB and deeply sorry that we are likely to face more industrial action. “We did agree with the GMB
that we will work together on a full service redesign, but we are unable to raise the salaries of one group of workers without equal pay implications across the entire organisation. Please be assured we are working to do all that is necessary to develop a service which meets the city’s needs.” A service update on the council website last night said: "All crews have been out on their scheduled rounds today, including the communal refuse and recycling crews, There are also two spare crews out collecting refuse, who will be focussing on the Preston Park area and Hanover. "During the industrial action we are limited in our ability to provide additional resources to catch up any missed collections as the drivers continue to 'work to rule'. If your collection has been missed please leave your
containers out and we will catch up when we can. Again, we apologise for the ongoing service disruption." The strike is part of an ongoing row over pay and conditions that has been ongoing for almost five years. It was sparked by a reorganisation of pay and conditions throughout the council to ensure similarlyskilled people doing roles traditionally carried out by either men or women are paid the same. CityClean workers are also working to rule, which means a ban on overtime and no picking up rubbish not placed in bins or recycling boxes. The strike follows months of unreliable collections, often due to trucks breaking down, which means rubbish was already piling up on the city’s streets.

However, we believe a greater risk to our city and environment is totally uncontrolled development under the government’s National Planning Policy Framework. "Agreeing a City Plan is critical not only to ensure new housing is available and affordable to ordinary people, but also to control development on greenfield sites, protect business space from
conversion to other uses, develop the local economy and meet sustainability targets." Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, the Green Party councillor who has been leading on the development of the City Plan, said: “Our time is almost up, and I support calls for all councillors to think about the future of all our city’s residents, businesses and communities. The decisions we make in the coming weeks will leave an indelible mark on the fabric of our city, so councillors must take our responsibilities seriously.” Councillors are set to consider proposals at the city council's policy and resources committee meeting on October 16. ■ Jason Kitcat, see page 4 ■ Sustainability is essential to ■ future growth, see page 5

Sustainability is essential to future growth Andy Parsons @yeloarchitects
Regardless of whether the proposed City Plan is accepted or not, it is inevitable that to gain the 24,000 new houses we need over the next 15 years, our city will have to start creeping out to our green edges - and perhaps into our blue edge as well. As an architect, I would be disturbed if the built fringes were developed as mediocre housing estates. This is an exciting opportunity to do something better. After all, with the Brighton and Lewes Downs having just been awarded UNESCO biosphere status, we need any potential greenfield development to embrace the latest sustainable technologies.
promotion of cycling, and a Green leadership. Sound familiar? Freiburg also has long-term strategies that encompass sustainable living much like Brighton’s One Planet City status. Since the 1970s, Freiburg has been increasing in size and has determined that Vauban, one of the new districts, will have a particular emphasis on sustainability. I first came across this area when researching Passivhauses (or Passive House) for one of my firm’s projects, as the district has quite a number of them - including a Passivhaus tower block. Most interestingly, Vauban has developed energy-plus houses houses with energy-generating features that create a surplus beyond what the house requires. Consequently, the residents of the energy-plus houses in Vauban earn an income of €6,000 a year by exporting the energy back to the grid. For Brighton to offer the best urban fringe, any new developments must achieve the following: Little reliance on outside energy Ideally, it would be like many schemes in the United States that are totally off-grid, or ones that create more energy than they consume, such as the energy-plus schemes.
different scenario to most towns. Density This is always the hardest aspect to balance correctly. It is essential that these urban fringes are developed within a framework that offers all of the positives, but also maximises the density. A sea of land-hungry bungalows would be a real tragedy. Quality All elements of the developments need to be excellent and you can only achieve that with the right brief, the
right financial investment, and the right project team on board. Finally, maybe we should also look beyond our urban fringes and explore developing the blue edge of our city? An approach could be to use Arcology, which is Architecture and Ecology combined. The results are very dense cities that have everything integrated and is often proposed in a distinctive built form. It all sounds a bit like an architecture student’s project, but there are schemes being built based on this theory such as Masdar City
Self-build opportunities I would like to see small plots sold off for self-builders and niche developers. In Vauban, less than 30% of the houses were developed by large-scale developers. This approach is also very successful at encouraging diverse streetscapes, as has been demonstrated in the newer areas of Amsterdam. Photo © FWTM/ Solarturm
All of the talk in Brighton and Hove so far has been of increasing the amount of available homes to the city. But these sites need to be more than that: they need to be exemplars of sustainable living. Other cities have successfully increased their size within a sustainable way and there is a particularly good example with Freiburg in Germany. Freiburg has about 220,000 inhabitants, high levels of public transport use, parking space “restrictions”,

Food-growing Brighton and Hove’s planning policy already requires new developments to encourage food-growing, but again this could be fully integrated into the design to be an exemplar scheme. A close community This is another integral part of the success of Freiberg, where schools, workplaces, and shops are kept close together. Freiburg even restricted shopping centres from being out of town - a very

Focus on cycling and walking Through design and planning, it should be possible to keep everything a community would need close and connected. Car-use could be discouraged by removing parking from the streets and only allocating a small number of paid-for spaces in a remote car park. Excellent public transport I do hope our city will go for it and get a tram system implemented, because I worry that we will get to a point where we have an excess amount of buses required in the city.
in Abu Dhabi. I often walk to the office along the seafront and admire the elegance of the pier being at rest within the seafront vista. Perhaps we have room for a few more structures in our seascape to generate housing opportunities, rather than just restricting our view towards the green landscape surrounding the city.

A fall in successful mortgage applications Ian Poysden @iepfinancial
Significant delays in mortgage applications following the Mortgage Market Review are a contributing factor in the falling number of successful mortgage applications in recent months. The Mortgage Market Review has hit lenders hard with only 9% of mortgage approvals being made within 5 days with 56% taking longer than 2 weeks compared to 44% last year.
Some lenders, such as Santander, are beginning to switch to a “desktop valuation” process to try and help ease the severe valuation delays, compounded by a lack of qualified surveyors. The upside of this is it should start to speed up valuations necessary for the mortgage application. The downside is the question around the efficacy of a desktop valuation compared to a qualified surveyor. It also does not solve the delay if the desktop valuation is less that the mortgage requested, when a qualified surveyor is then necessary to do a full survey. At present the average waiting time for a mortgage valuation is approximately 2 weeks, but some can take up to 40 days! The demand for mortgage finance is still strong but with the application process slowing down the system, some buyers may lose out on their preferred property. Sellers may feel that with house prices continuing to rise, the original asking price on their property may be undervalued by the end of the process and choose to re-introduce
their house to the market. Equally buyers may also lose out on their original mortgage offer if there is a time limit and should bear this mind when choosing their mortgage product if there continues to be delays. Take into account these possible delays when planning your mortgage application and research what effect the Mortgage Market Review may have on your application before applying. A mortgage broker can help you with every aspect of the application and often help speed up the process by finding the right product for you that suits your financial situation and lifestyle. If you have any queries regarding mortgages or any other aspect of your financial portfolio, please give us a call on 01273 208813. Benfield Primary School: Hidden gem where the children positively sparkle Jenny Barnard-Langston
Tucked between Victoria Road and Old Shoreham Road in Portslade, Benfield Primary School is a hidden gem for children aged four to 11. The school has a dynamic teaching team and works in close partnership with Hangleton Infant and Junior schools, with Emma Lake, an executive headteacher, leading the vision across the schools and with Helen Horsley, head of Benfield Primary School. Inspiring success is the watchword for the staff team. The enthusiasm for teaching and learning is breathtaking, children are eager to share their achievements; they positively sparkle with pride for their school. Arrive early enough - at 7.45 am - and you could share breakfast with some of the children in the breakfast club. When you enter the school, your imagination is captured by the aspirations of children for their future posted on the tree of success. Walk on through and you will witness the calm, learning environment where children are excited by their bright cheerful
classrooms with good resources to support them. Teachers have created an exciting curriculum that will ensure the children make good progress. The outdoor play area continues the sense of fun, exploration and enquiry. Ms Horsley said: “Benfield is a truly inclusive school where our children really are the centre of all we do. Our staff and governors are so enthusiastic and we are always striving to do better. We are lucky to have such great support from parents and carers who contribute to our school community.” Monitoring progress and ensuring the school thrives is the responsibility of governors, a group of committed volunteers who aim to enable every child at Benfield to reach their potential. Benfield Primary School is a fast-improving school where all decision-making is based around the optimum opportunities for children to love learning and to make good progress. At the end of the day, life at Benfield takes on a different feel with after-school clubs, Spanish, yoga, athletics, cricket, netball, art, ukulele, and the opportunity to join the homework club. Benfield Primary School is a
precious gem that we are very proud to show off. But don’t take our word for it come and see for yourself; you will be reluctant to leave! Jenny Barnard-Langston is chair of governors at Benfield Primary School

Far be it for me to be a spoilsport, but I have long wondered which bunch of numpties thought it would be a good idea to try and emulate Europe with our alcohol licence laws. Whatever possessed anyone to think for one tiny minute that extending licences to a maximum of 24 hours would mean more responsible drinking. It's almost a comedy sketch theme, because obviously these idiots expected people to be emulating our European neighbours, socialising in pavement cafés till the early hours and sipping Cognac. The reality, of course, in our fair city of Brighton and Hove is very different and now it is an everyday event to see and hear raucous drunken young revellers staggering home at 5am or 6am.

The Labour Party’s Stalinist contempt for democracy Tony Greenstein @TonyGreenstein
Those who read the disturbing front-page article in last week’s Brighton & Hove Independent cannot but be shocked by how the clique that runs Brighton and Hove District Labour Party treated a fellow councillor. Councillor Leigh Farrow is not even particularly radical, more a supporter of Old Labour and the awkward squad. In the 1970s and 1980s, Brighton Labour Party was one of the most left-wing parties nationally. In 1983, Rod Fitch, a supporter of Militant Tendency (which is now the Socialist Party), was elected by just one vote against his brother, Brian. The left consisted of both Militant and non-Militant supporters, in about equal measure. The battle against the poll tax involved a mass refusal to pay, which the Labour council vehemently opposed. Six Labour councillors refused to pay the poll tax and were suspended: Jean Calder, Andy Winter, Hilary Metcalf, Kate Jones, Gordon Wingate, and Sheila Hall. Thatcher’s flagship policy, whereby the rich and poor paid the same, led to her assassination
by her own party. Brighton Labour Party [BLP] was open and democratic, comprising Kemptown and Pavilion constituency Labour parties. Steve - now Lord - Bassam, as leader of the council, could not accept that the local parties, not the councillors, decided what was in the manifesto. Given his inability to defeat the left in open, democratic debate, he decided to seek the indefinite suspension of the local party. In 1991, a year before the general election, Brighton Labour Party was suspended and it remained suspended. In response, activists organised the Friends of Brighton Labour Party. Consequently, more than 20 of us were suspended pending disciplinary charges. In the wake of defeat at the 1992 general election, an investigation was conducted by Joyce - now Baroness - Gould, the party’s "witch finder-general". When my turn came to be interviewed by her, I revealed that I had a draft copy of her report, given to me by a sympathetic member of Labour's National Executive Council. She was not best pleased. My charge was the catch-all McCarthyist one of bringing the party into disrepute. Larry Whitty, Labour’s general

secretary was brought down to prosecute the case. NonMilitant supporters ended up suspended for varying terms, whereas Militant supporters were expelled. Under the left, in 1986, BLP ended 146 years of continuous Tory rule in Brighton. Membership was more than 2,000 and there was a flourishing of socialist, feminist, environmental groups. BLP organised the opposition to the 1982 war against Argentina and supported the local campaign against the National Front. Today, democracy has been extinguished in favour of a grotesque Stalinist suppression of all free debate. A party that squashes all dissent internally is unlikely to have much interest in a free society or upsetting corporate vested interests. FRI 19o

LABOUR BAN COUNCILLOR
Welcome to One Planet City C
Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy In the privacy of the Pelham Room, on the first floor of the Brighthelm Centre, the three Labour Party appointees sat as judge and jury. Watching on was Malcolm Powers, the party's unelected regional director, occasionally taking notes. The chief witnesses for the prosecution had given their evidence: Councillor Gill Mitchell, former leader and now chief whip of the Labour Group on Brighton and Hove City Council, and Councillor Chaun Wilson, her friend and colleague in East Brighton. It was 9.45pm when the hearing
- a "kangaroo court", according to Councillor Leigh Farrow, the veteran party member and defendant - had to end. The room, airless and claustrophobic, had been booked only until 9pm, and the caretaker needed to lock up. In truth, Cllr Farrow's fate had probably already been sealed. But the three-person disciplinary panel - chaired by Councillor Keith Dibble, former Labour Group leader on a council in Hampshire and chair of South East Labour - said they would sleep on their decision. When Cllr Dibble shook hands, Cllr Farrow - and Robert Brown MBE, his character witness and chair of the recently-suspended Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Branch Labour Party - took some
hope from the smile on his face. They were wrong. After an ordeal that has, it turns out, gone on more than two years, Cllr Farrow, 59, has been banned from standing again as the chosen party candidate at next year's city council elections. He has been a party member for 30 years; he has been an active trade unionist for even longer; he has served as a councillor both in Brighton and, in the early 1990s, in London. He is a workingclass socialist who works hard to represent citizens in one the city's most deprived wards - and, significantly perhaps, one of Labour's safest strongholds. >> Continued on page 8

UKIP’s conference in Doncaster presented a series of commonsense policies - from recovery of our fisheries to introducing Australian rules to govern our immigration policy. Louise Bours MEP was loudly cheered as she called for the protection of the NHS and increasing front-line nursing staff, while cutting back overpaid managers. Cries of “shame” rang out against the culture of political correctness that encouraged Labour to ignore the warning signs of sexual grooming of children in Rotherham. Winston McKenzie,a UKIP speaker of Caribbean descent, highlighted the potential for expanded free trade with our Commonwealth. Winston drove home the point that the Commonwealth, unlike the European Union, features growing economies and opportunities for UK global trade free from control of Brussels.
The highlight was Nigel Farage’s presentation of a series of polls reflecting surging UKIP support nationally. This was immediately followed by the surprise introduction of Mark Reckless as the latest MP to join the People’s Purple Army. The hall exploded with cheers and applause. Even a member of press was caught up in the celebration by clapping instead of taking photographs. The Tory conference presented a stark contrast as it reflected a downbeat mood with uninspiring speeches. There was none of the usual exuberance that normally characterises speeches from the young Tory speakers. There was little from the Tory leadership that inspired, unless you were moved by Cameron’s offer of 24/7 access to our already-overworked GPs or Osborne’s promise to attack benefits to cut the deficit. Dave’s hyperbolic statement that “the United Kingdom is a 1,000 times more important than the European Union” undoubtedly confused his remaining loyal supporters who, on July 1 last year, were presented with an epic vision for the expansion

of the EU “from the Atlantic to the borders of Russia.” The haemorrhaging of Tory grassroots support, two MPs resigning, and the threat of more to come undoubtedly weighed heavily on the Birmingham conference. Boris Johnson’s gravitas-free speech got the laughs and delivered a promise not to tax the rich people’s homes. Thankfully, our history demonstrates all political parties eventually become sclerotic and fade away. UKIP’s fight is distinctly British, as it champions our evolving liberal-democratic tradition and libertarian principles against the establishment’s offer of Tory elitism or the dead hand of Labour’s failed socialism. I am confident UKIP’s policies will have broad appeal to the people of our city. It is my hope the campaign ahead will be civilised and respectful. Everyone deserves respect; we are all entitled to freedom of speech and assembly free from harassment or attempts to stifle debate. Clive Hickman is the UKIP parliamentary candidate for Hove.

Dragon boat race A dragon boat race at Brighton Marina raised £25,000 for Rockinghorse children’s charity. Fifteen teams took part in the event last Sunday which was organised to generate some much-needed funds for the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, of which Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm. A host of local businesses took part, including Brighton & Hove City Cabs, Priory Group, Dyn and Mishon Mackay. Scores of supporters headed along to Marina Square to cheer on competitors and soak up the late September sunshine. Following a three-way battle between The Unsinkables, Priory Pirates and Brighton RNLI, the RNLI Brighton Lifeboat team proved to be on winning form and were crowned 2014 Dragon Boat champions. Rockinghorse also used the occasion to launch their new mascot, Rocky. Having held a competition back in July for children to help design the charity’s first-ever mascot, Rocky was unveiled to the crowd and joined by mascot competition winner Mia Terry, age 11, and
mascot sponsors Freedom Leisure. The event raised £25,000 for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, including match-funding from Lloyds and Santander, which will be used towards providing counselling sessions throughout 2015 for parents who have children on the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the Royal Alexandrea. Speaking after the event, Ryan Heal, CEO of Rockinghorse, said: “We are so pleased with the fantastic support shown at our 2014 Dragon Boat Race at Brighton Marina. Fifteen teams
took part on the day and helped us raise an amazing amount of money which really will make a difference to the lives of sick children and their families in Sussex. “Our thanks to Brighton Marina for making the event possible we’re already putting plans in place for next year.” The race will return to Brighton Marina on Sunday, September 27 2015.

A pet shop is celebrating 30 years in the business by offering every 30th customer their shopping for free. Pets Corner Hove on George Street is holding the promotion in store between Monday (October 6) and Sunday, October 12. The store’s manager said: “It has been a pleasure to care for all the animals and customers who come through our doors. The general public often comment how knowledgeable the staff in our store are.”
Brighton and Hove Buses has named one of its vehicles after Robert ‘Throb’ Young - the popular musician who died at his home in Hove last month. Young was a founding member of the iconic indie outfit Primal Scream and had lived locally for some time. The 251 Dennis Dart bus which now carries his name was used to transport guests from his recent funeral at St Andrew’s Church in Hove to a wake at The View in Western Esplanade.

Manor’s first ceremony A couple made a small piece of history this week when they became the first people to marry at Brighton’s Preston Manor. Rick Clifford and Penny Tamkin tied the knot in front of family and friends in a ceremony in the dining room of the manor, which is owned by Brighton and Hove City Council. Preston Manor, which is run by the city council, dates back in parts to the 18th century and is decorated and furnished in Edwardian style.

Brighton and Hove City Council has been approached by residents who want new parking scheme launched in the city. The request will be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday, with locals keen on new residents parking schemes north of Preston Drove. A feasibility study could follow. The council has also received similar calls from residents asking for parking surveys in Hanover and Elm Grove, north of Hove Park, South Portslade and East Brighton.

Locals calling other people in the Brighton area now have to dial 01273 before making their call. The change has been made in an effort to avoid having to change existing numbers in the future when demand for local numbers is expected to increase. The changes do not affect the price of making local calls but without first dialing the area code, locals will not be able to connect with other phone users in the city.
Brighton Housing Trust is asking locals to donate items essential in helping the city’s homeless survive the cold winter months. The charity’s day centre, First Base, is suffering from increasingly low stocks of basic items like socks, jumpers , hats and fleeces. Claudine Cohen, deputy manager of First Base, said: “Our clients are in desperate need of warm clothing and other essentials to help them to get through the winter months.” The charity has a wish list online at: www.amzn.to/1aRjdYj.

Topshop Topman opens
The stool used by commuters to play the hugely-popular piano at Brighton Station has been stolen. It disappeared earlier this week, much to the annoyance of regular station-goers who have grown used to the piano, which was donated by Brighton Piano Warehouse back in July. The instrument has proved a hit with locals and visitors alike. The firm has said it will replace the stool but would like whoever took the original to return it immediately.
A planned new cycle lane along Dyke Road has been recommended for approval. The proposed stretch, which will run between The Upper Drive and Old Shoreham Road, will lead to the loss of 20 parking spaces and cost around £350,000. Brighton and Hove City Council will discuss the plans on Tuesday (October 7) but officers have recommended approval. The scheme will be paid for with £250,000 from government funding and £95,700 from Brighton, Hove and Sussex VI Form College.
Scores of shoppers headed down to Churchill Square yesterday (Thursday) for the opening of the new Topshop and Topman shop. At 22,000 square feet, the new branch is the fashion chain’s biggest outside London and completes the recent revamp of Churchill Square And queues were already forming before its official 9am opening, with style conscious locals keen to get a glimpse of the flagship store. The shop boasts a complimentary personal shopper service.

Project aims to tackle isolation and stimulate creativity Hundreds of weighing scales that featured in an art installation at Brighton’s Fabrica Art Gallery have been given to 200 sheltered housing tenants as part of a novel project to boost creative activity and tackle isolation. The original artwork used 714 scales for a colourful and fun interactive exhibition at the gallery this summer called On Balance, by Swedish artist Jakob Dahlgren. The gallery was commissioned
by Brighton and Hove City Council to work across five sheltered housing schemes to boost engagement as part of wide ranging project. Distributed with each set of scales was a leaflet from the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership with simple recipes using fresh food and information about healthy eating. Sheltered scheme managers have also been trained by the Food Partnership to promote its Shape Up programme, which is open to anyone who is struggling with their weight. The Shape Up course runs for ten weeks and combines nutrition
and behavior change advice with gentle exercise for gradual weight loss and a healthier lifestyle. Peter Huntbach, Brighton and Hove City Council’s older people services manager, said: “It’s sad to see how isolated some residents can become, especially those without close family or friends. “We need to draw them out and re-engage them, which is why we have commissioned the Fabrica Art Gallery to run a series of art projects with five of our sheltered schemes with local artist, Helen Goodwin and a team of volunteers from Fabrica. “This project has not only re-engaged residents with their creative side, it has to also helped them to take a new look at life through the food they eat, and to get out in the fresh air for some gentle exercise be it for a walk or even a spell at the allotment. It all works together for a better life.” Clare Hankinson, audience development manager, said: “I am delighted that we have been commissioned - we will work through collaboration and conversation - this project is all about getting people together, and creating a permanent work of art which can be displayed in their scheme as something to be proud of and to inspire others.”

Looking back at a superb digital festival while the planning begins for BDF 2015 John Bannister @jdbannister Brighton Digital Festival, the United Kingdom’s biggest celebration of digital culture, came to a close on Sunday after four weeks of pioneering exhibitions, installations, conferences and performances. A total of 160 events from 131 organisers drew local, national,
and international audiences to venues across the city throughout September. The festival's fourth year attracted its strongest sponsorship and partnership programme to date, with support from premier sponsor American Express, as well as Pure 360, Brandwatch, and Brilliant Noise. Such partnerships in the private sector helped grow the festival -
along with ongoing support from Arts Council England, through its Grants For The Arts programme, and from Brighton and Hove City Council, whose contribution enabled Grassroots Fund awards to independent event organisers to put on outstanding community-driven events. This year's festival had a strong focus on collaboration, encouraging and supporting partnerships

remained the biggest in the country, this year showcasing 70 projects from 230 makers. The digital arts offering was a particular highlight, with Lighthouse turning its gallery into a newsroom for Julian Oliver and Danja Vasiliev’s Newstweek - Fact Fixing Bureau. The New Sublime also took place at Phoenix, organised and funded by curators The Fortunecats. The Brighton Chamber of Commerce made its first appearance at the festival this year with three events. Drawing on the expertise of the chamber member businesses, the events addressed the potential of new technologies, how to take ecommerce to wider international audiences, and the power of digital content for business growth. In the final week, Wired Sussex coordinated 33 events in workspaces of 26 member companies encouraging them to open their doors as part of the annual Creative, Digital and IT Open Studios. More than 300 people looked behind the scenes of some of the city's most creative and innovative businesses. Andy Budd, Brighton Digital Festival consortium member and Clearleft managing director (organisers of dConstruct), said: “The diversity of events was amazing this year, from comedy gigs in the back of a pub, to huge interactive street performances, and from small community meetups to internationally acclaimed dance events. It just goes to show how integrated into every aspect of society digital technology has become. So I’m really excited to see how we can open the festival up to even more people next year.”

For AW14, Aveda introduces Romantic Grandeur, a limitededition makeup collection that steps into a dream. Not unlike the heavenly Kate Bush, these products blur the lines between fantasy and reality, past and present. Romantic Grandeur is all about smoky hues and gorgeous smudgy shades. The mood is ephemeral and nostalgic, with a softly elusive quality. I’ll cover the eyewear next week. Today, we’ll explore lipstick and focus on the startlet vibe. “I was inspired by how things change with the passage of time - how they can start out with a strong shape that can later turn hazy,” says Janell Geason, the Aveda global artistic director (makeup). “Use fingers or brushes to blur the lines to make the makeup really soft but at the same time really strong. This technique gives the looks a definite romantic bent, which makes them really beautiful and wearable for all women.”
Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color is infused with plant and fruit waxes to hydrate and plump. It also refreshes, with a fantastic new Organic Peppermint, Vanilla and Ginger aroma. I tried the boldest shade first: “Goji Berry” is a bright bluish-red smoothing lip colour that delivers a very respectable creamy coverage. If your prefer natural daywear, you might go for the “Sheer Fig” mineral shade, which is translucent with a hint of shimmering gold. Nobody should actively eat lipstick, but these are very pleasing to wear, as you inhale as much as taste the natural formulas, which enrich and smooth fine lines (£13.50 each). “Mangosteen” Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip glaze delivers a silver-screen siren vibe if applied at max strength for a black cherry cupid’s bow and you can smudge it around for a bruised cherry pop to pretend you’ve been caught

Aveda Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color is infused with plant and fruit waxes
behind the bike sheds. It is infused with plant emollients and includes the signature aromas ideal for dates or parties, as the drama of the rich glossy sheen wears down to a pretty, plumstained blush (£16.00). Illamasqua always push the boat out, and their sheer lip gloss in Opulent doesn’t disappoint (£16.50). Part of the new Once collection, Opulent scatters peachy rainbow hues that look amazingly shiny on nude lips or doubles as a wonderful highlighter if you want a gleamy pout beyond the darkness of Mangosteen Glaze. Just dab on the centre of your bottom lip to add dazzling depth.
Waters is, quite rightly, a bestselling author with legions of devoted fans. They won’t be disappointed in her new book. I think I should state right now that, although I’ve read her before (Tipping the Velvet), I am not in one of those legions. I admire, like, enjoy reading her work, but a fan I am not. This is set in the 1920s and all of society is feeling the pinch. Frances, who lives with her mother in a crumbling beast of a house in a genteel part of London, comes to the unhappy conclusion that they must take in paying guests (so much nicer than ‘lodgers’) and so enters Lillian and Leonard. It makes for an uncomfortable living arrangement: the mother moves bedrooms to the ground

floor and there are awkward moments in the shared outside WC. (I cannot quite imagine the horror of that.) Lillian (soon to become Lily) and her husband are of the ‘"clerk class" and Frances finds herself drawn into a friendship with Lily, with quite disastrous results. The devil is in the details here. And although the plot seemed obvious to me from the start, it absolutely didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the book. I, too, became entranced with Lily and yearned for Frances who is a capable, independent woman - to break free of the ghastly trappings of a middleclass life where single women are called "spinsters" and the scrubbing of floors is deemed an embarrassment, as it proves they are too poor for a servant. Crikey. Perhaps I’m becoming a fan.

Business A new way of keeping fit for those without hours to spare A new way of keeping fit has opened at Brighton Marina. Brighton & Hove Independent met Fiona Egan, founder of Sásta, to find out more What is your background? Have you always been interested in keep-fit? I struggled with my weight all my life with my earliest memory of weight issues being when I weighed 10 stone at 10 years of age. As I grew older being overweight affected my confidence and even though I waivered only between 10 and 14 stone it controlled my life. I was fixated by the scales with daily weigh in and camouflaging my weight gain. Diets worked for me short term but once I went back to normal eating the weight piled back on again so after 35 years of yo-yo dieting I made a decision to find a weight loss solution to achieve and maintain my weight loss in a healthy fun way. I sold my accountancy practice to enable me to pursue research to the key to solving my “battle of the bulge”. It had to be a lifestyle change and that would include education on good eating that could be incorporated into family and social gatherings, exercising (as little as possible!) and finally providing the motivation (and fun factor) when I needed to keep on track. Hence the birth of the sásta fitness concept. When did you first have the idea for sásta? My lightbulb moment happened in 2006 my eight year old daughter looked at a photo of me and said “Mammy you look like Granny’s sister” Granny was 73 at the time and my daughter was right as my excess weight made me look much older than I was but it still took another three years and a Saturday night at home alone because “nothing fitted me” to make me take action. My intention was to build a weight loss business around an imported fitness device but after researching products available in the fitness

market and experiencing the quality issues and poor backup service I decided to develop our own Irish product, the sásta fitness pod. I realised very early on that I needed to be able to control the quality of our product and the only way possible to do that was to build and maintain ourselves. Financially this has been crippling with a current spend of 1.2 million Euros but I tend to focus on the potential and not the lack of funds otherwise I would never have continued. Sásta is unique. What are the benefits of it? The unique selling point of the Sásta fitness experience is that the patented Irish designed sásta fitness pod provides clients with an exercise opportunity that guarantees results in four weeks. The short 30 minute workout is conducive to the demands of modern living where people are extremely ‘time poor’ and need to see weight loss results in a shorter period of time. In addition to the fat burning pod workout, sásta is like your own personal trainer with one-to-one coaching where the sásta team are committed to motivating clients to achieve their goals in a fun way. What sort of people is it best-suited to? Our customers are both male and female ranging from 16 years to 80 years old. sásta offers something for everyone but is particularly suited to people who want to lose some weight, have health issues and/or poor fitness levels exasperated by excess weight. Why did you choose Brighton to set up a branch? Franchise owner Manraj Singh chose to locate his studio in Brighton as it is such a vibrant, affluent, trendy city and we would agree the ideal launch pad for Sásta’s first UK franchise How have things been so far? We are delighted and appreciative of all the support and goodwill we are experiencing locally since opening sásta Brighton. The positive feedback from our free trials with clients signing up with us to improve their health, fitness levels or to lose weight is very encouraging and confirmation of a busy future ahead. Sásta Brighton is located at Brighton Marina. To book your free trial call 01273 610660 email brighton@ sastafitness.co.uk or visit: www.sastafitness.co.uk.
HBA's Christmas Shopping Challenge Following the success of the campaign last year, Hove Business Association (HBA), has launched this year’s Christmas Shopping Challenge. Residents have been encouraged to look out for the “Stamp’n WIN!” posters in Hove and Portslade shops in the run-up to Christmas – to be in with a chance of winning one of a host of prizes – including a top cash prize of £500. To take part, pick-up your “Stamp’n WIN!” Christmas Shopping Trail Map from Hove
Library, participating retailers, or from some of the bus routes into Hove. Then, visit any 12 of the shops on the map, get your map stamped by the shop, and then send in or drop off your map to Hove Business Association to be entered into a prize draw. Jill Humphrey, HBA’s chairwoman, says: “The diversity of our idependent retailers in Hove and Portslade is truly amazing! The whole idea of “Stamp’n WIN!” is to encourage more shoppers to visit these retailers – and I think they’re
going to be delighted with the huge range of new and interesting products available which will help them get ready for Christmas!” If you’re an independent retailer in either Hove or Portslade, and you’d like to know more, you can visit the HBA website www.hovebiz.com or you can email chair@hovebiz.com. One Planet City: Join the journey 10 principles | 10 photographers | 10 venues | 10 months | One city A unique photographic journey around Brighton and Hove starts on Sunday (October 5), giving visitors a remarkable opportunity to see our city in a new light. FotoDocument, an arts education organisation, together with Photoworks, a Brighton-based charity promoting engagement with photography - has commissioned 10 emerging and established photographers to create One Planet City Exhibitions, a series of 10 photo essays on the theme of One Planet Living. Each essay is made up of a series of images and installed in some of Brighton and Hove’s most iconic locations: Brighton Railway Station, The Lock Crossing at Shoreham Port, the newly-refurbished Open Market in London Road, The Waste House at University of Brighton, Emmaus Brighton and Hove, the American Express Community Stadium, Brighton Dome, Hove Promenade, Foredown Tower in Portslade, and the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground. Visitors will be given a map to follow the story trail around the city. One Planet Living was developed by Bioregional, an international award-winning charity. It is a global initiative based on 10 principles, enabling people to live, work, and do business within the natural limits of the planet. Brighton and Hove was declared the world’s first One Planet Living city last year. Since then, partners and agencies have been working together to boost the local economy, become more resistant to price increases in energy, fuel and food, and develop a more equal and healthy city. The One Planet City Exhibition is part of Brighton Photo Biennial 2014, an ambitious and innovative festival of international photography. The
One Planet City exhibitions will remain in place until July 2015. The 10 photographers taking part are: Thomas Ball, Murray Ballard, Sam Faulkner, Sophie Gerrard, Jonathan Goldberg, Amanda Jackson, Jason Larkin, Valentina Quintano, Syd Shelton and Nick Waplington. Jason Kitcat, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “This latest project by FotoDocument is essential in spreading the word about the One Planet Living approach to sustainability. As Brighton and Hove is the world’s first accredited One Planet City, it’s great to see the work premier here at our Photo Biennial. We’re very proud to have it here.” Celia Davies, director of Photoworks, said: “The project helps us achieve our aim to connect outstanding artists with diverse audiences and enable new work to be made and discovered. "The 10 prominent locations connecting up the One Planet themes will ensure thousands more city residents and visitors have the opportunity to engage with thought-provoking photography, presented as part of city life for over 10 months. "For us, the photograph is only half the story; the other half is the subject itself and this project provides an opportunity to explore and where possible address key issues affecting sustainability in our local communities.” Sue Riddlestone, chief executive of Bioregional, added: “The FotoDocument exhibition is a real work of art. "The images capture incredible scenes and really demonstrate the people power behind sustainable living. This exhibition is a true testament to the ambition and achievement of Brighton and Hove as a One Planet City.“

This week's must-see Michael Palin: Travelling to Work Theatre Royal Tuesday, October 7, 7.30pm. He may be best-known as one part of the iconic comedy group Monty Python, but Michael Palin is also a hugely-respected travel journalist and writer and it is due in part to both roles that he went on to achieve national treasure status. To put it short, Palin is pretty much loved by everyone. To celebrate the publication of his third volume of diaries, Travelling to Work, he is performing a brand new two-part stage show, looking back at years of exploring the world and nearly five decades in radio, television, books and films. The first half is a whistle-stop tour of the globe: highlights and lowlights, adventures and cock-ups, beauties and beasts, wonders and wash-outs; all vividly illustrated with a selection of photos and footage shot during his eight TV travel series which began with the amazingly-popular Around the World in Eighty Days.
B&H Independent-1909:Layout 1
In the second half of the show, Palin takes a free-wheeling look back at the other side of his life – the love of comedy that took him from a schoolboy in Sheffield to world-renown with Monty Python. Long memories, with one thing in common: a love of laughter. Tickets are priced £33.40 and are available by calling 0844 871 7650, in person at the venue or online at www.atgtickets.com/brighton. A £2.85 booking fee applies.Tickets £33.40 plus £2.85 transaction fee.

Its core members - Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks – met at Charterhouse, a public school in Surrey, and began playing together with two other students in 1967. A few years and personnel changes later (including the addition of drummer Phil Collins) and the classic lineup was in place. Here, they’re back together again to discuss their careers.

Person in Picture Sacred Rivers with Simon Reeve BBC2, 9pm The adventurer returns with a series that takes him around the world to areas that cannot be fully appreciated without considering the vast influence of their rivers, and he’s going to explain how those sacred rivers don’t just simply flow through countries – they define them. Simon begins at the source of the world’s longest river, the Nile, and follows it out to sea, taking him from the Ethiopian highlands, through the desert of Sudan and then Egypt, right to the Mediterranean Sea.

Selling in the autumn Probably one of the most common questions estate agents get asked is “Is this a good time to put our home on the market?” It tends to crop up just around now, shortly after Christmas, and in the run-up to Easter.. And, not surprisingly, it is generally followed a few weeks later by a closely-related question: “Is it worth putting our home on the market now, or should we wait until the New Year/Easter?” Why is this? Well, these are the three times of year when the property market is traditionally said to be at its most active, and not surprisingly, people want to surf that expected wave of buyer interest. But does this actually stand up to scrutiny? Well, let’s take the autumn. September and early October do indeed normally enjoy quite an increase in property market activity. For many of us, this is a time of new beginnings, with people moving to new jobs, etc, while for those who are planning to move, it’s natural to want to have it all done and dusted in time for Christmas, and before the worst of the winter weather makes the thought of moving
house thoroughly daunting. Similar, though different, cases can equally well be made for the post-Christmas and Easter periods. As with autumn, there is some logic to both of them. But, does this necessarily make any of them a particularly “good” time to put your home on the market? Actually, timing is generally less important than you might think. For one thing, if it were that simple, we’d all be property millionaires! But in any case, you need to remember that the balance between supply and demand in the property market is largely self-adjusting – by which I simply mean that other things being equal, large numbers of hopeful buyers will automatically tend to attract large numbers of equally hopeful sellers. The simple fact is that if your property is well-presented and well-priced, it stands just as much chance of selling during the summer holidays as it does in Autumn – or the New Year, or at Easter. So, the advice is always the same: forget about trying to read the runes, and just move when it suits you. You can never second guess the market. If a property is correctly priced, it
should sell whatever time of year. Buyers are always there when an accurately priced property comes onto the market. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. Paulbonett@bonetts.co.uk Twitter: @bonettpa

YO! Sushi
Confessions of a sushi virgin who fell in love with raw fish Until fairly recently, I was a sushi virgin. Which is perhaps surprising for a 27-year-old food obsessive. Yet I couldn’t be convinced that raw fish would be something I’d enjoy. It wasn’t until a trip to Vancouver earlier this year that I took the plunge into trying the combination of sticky rice, seaweed and fish. And I completely fell in love with it. So, when asked if I would like to learn more about Japanese food at YO! Sushi, I jumped at the chance. YO! Sushi launched in 1997, modelling itself on the Japanese “kaiten bars” and urban Tokyo landscape. Its popularity and the rise of sushi as a trendy cuisine meant the business model spread across the United Kingdom and now operates with over 70 stores. Recently, YO! Sushi in Brighton introduced a sushi school. For £30 a head, you have the opportunity to take a deep-dive into the intricate world of Japanese food and learn about what makes sushi such a special dish. Arriving on time for our 6pm class, we sat at the far side of the restaurant, along with a large group celebrating a birthday. Presented with a rolling mat and

This type of sushi is often used as a palatecleanser between dishes and proved to be a really easy roll to make. The following futomaki roll was a little more challenging as we filled our nori with teriyaki duck and spring onion. Yet, the end result was one of the most enjoyable sushi rolls from the session. As a parent, there are lots of questions likely to drive you up the wall - like “Why?”, on repeat, or “Are we nearly there yet?”. But, in my experience, it’s the questions from other adults that are the most annoying. “Are you pregnant with number two yet?” asked a friend the other day. I think this has to rate as one of the most stupid questions ever. Firstly, if I am pregnant with number two and I haven’t told you, there’s a reason for that. Secondly, if I’m not pregnant with number two that could be for any number of reasons: miscarriage, failure to conceive, or perhaps just that I don’t want another child. Any which way, if I wanted you to know, I’d have told you. Otherwise, you’re safe to assume it’s none of your damn business. And don’t even get me started on the “yet”. Ahh, that feels better - a problem shared is a problem halved and all that. Which is why I know you won’t mind if I provide you with a few more questions not to ask parents: 1) How does he/she sleep? If they’re a good sleeper, we’ll tell you. It’s all we’ll talk about. If they’re not, we’re going to struggle to answer even the simplest of questions on the back of our “condensed sleeping” routine. Steer clear; 2) Have you thought about trying x/y/z? The answer is either yes, and it’s not right for us - or no, because it’s a stupid suggestion. Jog on; 3) What are you up to this evening? You make me feel like I should have maintained some sort of nocturnal life, when I’d really rather be home for my child’s bedtime and then put my feet up on the sofa. Please desist. Hyypiä has faith in Seagulls squad regardless of mixed start to season
Hyypia has faith in his Albion squad
Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Brighton and Hove Albion find themselves sitting 19th in the Championship table as the season reaches its first real milestone. However tempting it may be for supporters to pore over every crumb of early season information, there is little to be deduced from studying the fledgling table in the opening weeks. Teams have new player settling in, the fixture list has yet to even out and an array of new managers are most-likely getting to grips with their playing squads. The ten game mark, though, is when people traditionally starting taking notice of the league standings. And, with Brighton having reached that point with just two wins to their name, the more nervous of the Amex faithful are starting to shuffle in their padded seats. Brighton have beaten only Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers in the Championship so far – the most
recent of which came back on August 23. Since then the Seagulls have managed four draws and two losses. They have also only found the net nine times in the league this season - a total better than only Rotherham, Bolton and Blackpool, two of which sit in the bottom two places. It is, however, too early for fans to start panicking or preparing for a relegation battle. Hyypiä’s side are becoming increasingly-difficult to beat. No team outside the top nine have conceded fewer goals and the Albion have kept an impressive three clean sheets in four games, if you include the Capital One Cup win at Burton. Despite not managing to win midweek, the Seagulls had 26 shots and, but for a man of the match performance by the away ‘keeper, would have taken a morale-boosting maximum points. The players are still adapting to Hyypiä’s system and, despite the relatively meagre goal return so far, there are definite signs that the manager’s attacking intentions are coming to the fore.
Hyypiä himself remains confident. He told the club’s official website: “I want the players to keep the faith in what we are doing. “I want to continue playing this way and the results will come. That’s my way of doing things and as long as I’m here I don’t think it will change a lot in terms of how we play, how we defend or how we attack, because I believe in those things. “I have a lot of faith in this team, they have played with this system and the things we’ve worked on for three months and that’s how we’ll continue.” Brighton face two tricky games, first against high-flying Watford tomorrow, and then at home to Middlesbrough. It may be that the points situation does not improve drastically over the next week. But Hyypiä is determined it is only a matter of time before results begin to match performances and the Seagulls start to climb the table. Straight from the commentary box So it didn’t happen in the end. The Albion were set to face two former managers in the space of five days. Russell Slade had to watch Cardiff City from the posh seats rather than the dug-out as he continues (as I write) as a ‘consultant’. Meanwhile Oscar Garcia stepped down as Watford boss due to ill health. On the face of it you couldn’t get more different characters. I will never forget Slade carried aloft on the Withdean pitch after survival on the final day of the season in 2009 and one fan grabbing his notorious peaked cap to reveal his gleaming crown. He is often described by players who served under him as a great man manager. He proved capable of getting the best out of individuals like Dean Cox who he described as his “little bundle of anger management”. He could be funny, but also slightly curt if required. He appeared genuine but he never got the opportunity to prove himself with the Seagulls during his second two year contract. His 42% win ratio at Leyton Orient was impressive and was unlucky not to lead the O’s to promotion. As Cardiff City manager he has a chance to rid himself of the moniker of ‘good lower league
boss’ but also risks reinforcing that tag if he fails in Wales. I was never party to the changing room but Oscar Garcia appeared to have a completely different persona. Quiet, assured and somewhat distant, the Spaniard also made a huge contribution to the Seagulls. Admittedly he did inherit a good foundation from Gus Poyet but still had to integrate the younger talent with established players to deliver them to the play-offs last season. The squad’s shortcomings were evident against Derby and the nature of his departure from the club was a huge disappointment for the owner but he overachieved somewhat with a 6th placed finish. I think we will all have to start learning a few phrases in Finnish if Sami Hyypia manages to fulfil the ultimate ambition for the club and reach the Premier League. The early table doesn’t look promising but performances have deserved more points in recent weeks. Amiable and straightforward I’m sure he will also impose his own style and personality in time. Traits from some of the former Albion bosses though could help him as he tries to lead the Seagulls to the promised land.

Match preview: Watford v Brighton and Hove Albion
Calls for inclusion of the Derry Pele intensify as fans look for flair Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion The clamour among sections of the Seagulls support for the mercurial Paddy McCourt to start an Albion game shows no signs of quietening ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) trip to Watford. McCourt again impressed from the bench during the Albion’s midweek draw after equallyencouraging, albeit brief, cameos against Blackpool and Nottingham Forest. The Northern Ireland international, who was this week recalled to the national squad, has played less than 45 minutes of first team football in the league since signing for the Seagulls but that has no stopped him showing supporters glimpses of his undoubted creative talents, not least in the Albion’s 3-0 Capital One Cup win at Burton. And, with the Albion struggling to score in recent league games, the feeling among many Amex regulars is that it might be time to throw the one-time Celtic player in from the off. Sami Hyypiä has spoken enthusiastically about the player’s abilities and said McCourt was showing signs of improving his fitness and it could be he gets his first league start tomorrow. However, for all McCourt’s talents, it isn’t as simple as all being well once the Derry Pele is given more regular action. Against Cardiff in midweek it was not in the creating of chances that Albion fell short, rather the taking of them.
Fans are hoping to see Paddy McCourt from the start at Watford
Brighton clocked up 26 shots during the draw with Cardiff, with eight on target. Just one, Bruno’s speculative, probably slightly miss-hit, first half volley, found the net. And therein lays the Seagulls main problem. The Albion are averaging an average of 18 shots per game. That is second only to Norwich City in terms of the Championship. They have, however, only nine league goals to show for it - the fourth lowest figure in the division. In their last three league games Brighton have scored once from 63 efforts. Tomorrow they face a Watford team with no such problems. The Hornets have managed 19 goals from their ten league games so far, averaging just under two goals a game. In Matej Vydra and Troy Deeney, Watford boast one of the division’s most potent forward
lines, and between them the pair have already managed seven league goals. Fernando Forestieri is another stand-out attacking talent in the home side’s ranks, and the team which up until recently was managed by former Albion head coach Oscar Garcia, also has the likes of Ikechi Anya, Lloyd Dyer and Almen Abdi to call on. Defensively, Watford have the impressive Gabriele Angella and experienced Gabriel Tamas in a back line in front of the at times erratic but often brilliant Heurelho Gomes. They go into tomorrow’s match on the back a four match unbeaten run which includes a hard-fought draw at Blackburn and a good home win over Brentford earlier this week. Vydra is on a particularly good streak, having scored in three of the last four games.

The whole 90 minutes was good last night, there were times when Cardiff got the ball a little bit, but they didn’t create anything dangerous. By keeping the ball they could have a little breather and then play again, that was the case. “The start of the game was good and the finish was good and that’s how we need to play every time, but a football game lasts 90 minutes. “It’s not enough when you play 45 minutes good and then the other 45 so-so. So I’m very pleased with the performance and the only thing we lacked was a second, third, fourth and fifth goal. I think the whole team did their job out on the pitch and the players who came off the bench also performed well. I am very pleased [with the performance] but unfortunately I need to be happy with a draw, which I am not.”
