"Following the result of the standards enquiry into his conduct, and his indication that he is going to appeal against their ruling that he brought his office into disrepute, we again call on him to resign without any further delay.” Cllr Duncan won his Queen's Park seat from Labour when he was elected to the council in 2007. A manifesto for older people Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy
Do not call them "golden oldies". It's patronising and insulting. Older people are citizens - and they are demanding that their voices are heard at next year's general election. Brighton and Hove has a reputation as a young and vibrant city. But slivers of superficial truth risk distracting us from a harsher reality: for many people, the "place to be" can be a difficult place to live. It is true we have proportionately
fewer older people (13%) than the regional and national averages - 17% and 16%, respectively. The number of older people has declined - but it is expected increase again, reaching about 40,000 people (13.8% of the population) by 2021. And older people in some key wards in Brighton and Hove particularly with their greater propensity to vote - could exert a decisive influence on May 7 2015. Brighton & Hove Independent is pleased to support an important meeting of older people at the Brighthelm Centre later this month. Paul Philo, one of the organisers
of the October 30 meeting, said: "Across the country, in many places - but not, until now, in Brighton and Hove - older people have been well represented by the National Pensioners Convention (NPC). "The NPC is a campaigning organisation that supports older people's aims, such as a liveable state pension and the retention of rights like bus passes. Older people put into the economy much more than they take out. "Now is the time - before the manifestos have been solidified for older people to put pressure on the political parties to represent their aims.”

Council plans on using private sector money to develop King Alfred site Brighton and Hove City Council is advertising for a developer to tackle the King Alfred site and replace it with a high-quality leisure centre. The council has taken out an advert in the trade press alerting potential developers to the opportunity to revamp the site, which has long-been considered in need of major modernisation. An accompanying residential development of around 400 homes is being suggested to
interest parties - subject to planning permission – as a way of meeting the cost of a new leisure centre. A council report in July 2013 estimated a new leisure centre would cost around £40 million money the council says is simply not available. It is therefore hoping to sidestep the financial burden by partnering with the private sector and has begun actively looking for a developer to team up with.
The current King Alfred Centre building, which dates back to the 1930s, is expensive to run at a time when the council is facing its biggest-ever funding cuts. A cross-party board was set up to address the problem. Its chairman, Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, said: “Staff are doing a brilliant job at the current leisure centre - it’s been much improved but with mounting maintenance costs, it really needs replacing with an up-to-date facility.”

Making the shift to sustainable transport is not easy, but it is absolutely essential. We are a growing city, and our often narrow and congested roads just don’t have the room to cram in more private vehicles. Almost 40% of residents do not own a car, and the majority of tourists visiting our city travel by public transport. The only way we can keep our city moving and economy growing is by making it easier for residents and visitors to choose walking, cycling and public transport to get around. With the hard work of everyone involved in shaping schemes across the city, our city continues to be recognised for making our streets safer and more peoplefriendly. New hope for Brighton mum and Parking schemes the search for a donor is back on approved - with support of residents A raft of residents’ parking schemes will be introduced in Brighton and Hove after the council recommended a number of new proposals. A quartet of schemes were given the go-ahead by Brighton and Hove City Council this week but, rather unusually for parking restrictions, each boasted support from locals living in the affected streets. A green-ticked scheme at Bakers Bottom will be an extension to existing so-called ‘light touch' areas where restrictions are for one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon or evening. A council consultation found 77.8% of respondents in the Bakers Bottom area were in favour of extending the Area U parking scheme to include Bute Street, Rochester Street, Hendon Street and Livingstone Street. Restrictions, which will begin on November 10, will be Monday to Saturday between 10am and 11am and 2pm and 3pm. Anti-social parking on grass verges will also be, with enforcement taking place on the east side of Queensway. Another scheme given a final go-ahead was in the Lewes Road Triangle area. A total of 61% of respondents supported an extension of the existing Area J residents' parking zone. The new restrictions are likely to be enforced from December 1 between 9am and 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Nine cycle parking places with space for up to 10 bikes in each will also be provided as part of the two extended schemes. This is in direct response to households in the areas telling the council that they have more bikes than cars. Councillors also agreed to design a new parking scheme in
the Wish Park area of Hove. Of those who gave their views in that area, 75% said they wanted a residents' parking scheme - with most favouring the 'light touch' enforcement option. The proposal is to extend the current Area W scheme which operates between 10am and 11am and 7pm and 8pm Monday to Saturday. Detailed proposals will also be drawn up for the Bolsover Road area after 92.5% of consultation respondents voted in favour of an extension to the existing Area R parking scheme. Subsequent plans include widening the road and introducing a one way system. Councillor Pete West, chair of the environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “The council has worked hard to tailor these individual schemes to the needs of residents and businesses. “All the schemes have been drawn up at the request of residents and ward councillors and are designed to ease parking pressure for people living in these areas, improve access and provide a better environment.”

A mum of two who took her search for a donor worldwide by using social media has been given fresh hope of recovery. Brave Nikki Braterman, who lives in Brighton and Hove, recently underwent a consultation with cancer specialists at the Royal Marsden hospital in London. And the outcome was a new treatment plan and a renewed appeal for donors. Ms Braterman said: "The past
few weeks have been a roller coaster. I am all too aware that the nature of my disease and how it is progressing makes it very dangerous and difficult to treat. “After seeing the clinicians at the Royal Marsden I have a new treatment plan and new hope that I may yet beat this disease. “While the immediate priority is chemotherapy and radiotherapy to control the leukaemia in my central nervous system, I will need
a transplant. “I have two young children and everything to live for." And she reiterated her appeal for people to sign up to Anthony Nolan register. She said: “Please sign up as a donor and please pass on news of our campaign.” Her website, www. perfecttenmatch.co.uk, has 250,000 views in just one week following her last awareness drive.

ME research conference
Plans to transform a derelict ice rink into flats and offices have been rejected by Brighton and Hove City Council. Developers wanted to replace the rink in Queen Square with a five-storey building. Councillors, however, voted against the plans after concerns were voiced as to the scheme’s effect on people living in Wykeham Terrace. The council had previously approved permission for a hotel on the site and that consent still stands despite work having yet to start.
A conference looking into ME practice and research was held at Hove Town Hall and attracted more than 150 people with the condition. The guests were joined by carers, NHS professionals at the Sussex ME Society organised event, which also had support from Action for ME and Association for Young People with ME. Guest speakers included Dr Gabrielle Murphy, a consultant immunologist at London’s Royal Free Hospital. An estimated 6,000 people in Sussex suffer with ME.

Councillors should be free to say what they like provided what they say does not break the law Ben Duncan
anyone else, should be free to say what they like, as long as it doesn't break the law of the land, and that if people don't like it, they should vote for someone else instead.
human right to free speech was limited by me having signed a code of conduct for members soon after I was elected. I think that a poor decision for democracy - not just here in Brighton and Hove, but across the country. Why? Because every council, everywhere, has a members' code of conduct, and if councillors think they might be punished for making a bad joke,
A few months back, I made some ill-advised jokes on a social media website - targeting Muslim fundamentalists and members of the military. Some people found them funny; some found them offensive. Most didn't care either way, of course. But some of those who found them offensive Ben Duncan's first controversial tweet about lodged official complaints "hired killers" with the council, claiming Indeed, you could take the I had failed to treat them with due respect and even that argument further and say that I'd brought the council into local democracy works best when voters know what the disrepute. On Monday, a panel of candidates are actually like councillors met to consider the and that all elected councillors The second tweet about Islam complaints. They decided I had should be encouraged to speak indeed broken the council's their mind in public wherever or an ill-judged off-the-cuff own rules and that I should be possible to help. Members of the panel didn't comment, they simply won't punished accordingly. I argued that councillors, like like that argument, saying my make any jokes or off-the-cuff
comments. And electors will know less about them, as a result. That'll mean, come polling day, they'll be forced to choose between candidates solely on the basis of their party allegiance - and not whether they think they'd be a good local councillor, or represent their views, if they are elected. I don't - with hindsight (a wonderful thing!) - think my jokes were particularly funny. But I do think democracy depends on my right to make them, if I so choose. And in voters' right, ultimately, to vote for someone else at election time if they don't like them. Human rights must apply to everyone, all the time, if they are to have any meaning at all. If they don't apply to politicians, then our
local democracy can't work properly. I think, with their ruling, the members of the “standards panel” have cast something of shadow on both respect for human rights, and democracy, and all in the name of Brighton and Hove City Council. It is they who have brought our council into disrepute. I think this is an important argument, so I'll be appealing so we can thrash out these ideas once and for all. Then, I'll just need to decide whether to stand as an independent, pro-human rights candidate in central Brighton in next year's council election - to give people the chance to vote against me, if they don't like my jokes - or, just maybe, to choose me as their councillor. Just as democracy allows. Ben Duncan is a city councillor for Queen’s Park; a former Green Party representative, he is now an independent.

Artist's project helps highlight realities of life with HIV in 2014 An artist is taking her storytelling project which looks at how people live with HIV on tour across Sussex having already made an appearance at the House of Commons. Alice Booth was given funding for her Speaking Volumes project in September last year by the National Lottery Awards for All scheme. And since then the young community artist has had an eventful year, culminating in her county-wide tour. The Speaking Volumes oralhistory project worked with 15 local people living with HIV through a series of workshops where their experiences were recorded. A range of people took part, including gay men aged between 26 and 70, as well as women from a range of countries. The aim of the project was to give a voice to people who are seldom heard, as well as giving the general public a chance to hear what it means to live with HIV in 2014, helping them to gain a greater understanding of the condition and reduce stigma. One of the participants, Angelina
Namiba, said: “Having HIV does not stop you from being a mum, does not stop you from having a relationship and does not stop you from working. “All you need to do is get the right treatment, care and support and you can live as healthy a life as anyone else. Don’t let HIV define who you are. Take control.” The recorded stories were each hidden inside hollowed out books, decorated with portraits by local artist Jake Spicer and words from the storyteller. These books were then displayed in libraries and at community events. The project and its website, where the stories can also be heard, was launched in April at a high profile event attended by the then Brighton and Hove mayor Denise Cobb and MP Caroline Lucas. The exhibition of stories was on display at the Jubilee Library in Brighton for two months, after which it travelled to Hove and Woodingdean libraries where it gained a greater audience. And an enthusiastic Ms Lucas said: “The stories that are being told at the Jubilee Library are stories of survival and strength. They are
inspiring, deeply personal, and stories that should be heard as a call to action towards the eventual eradication of HIV.” In July Speaking Volumes was invited to the House of Commons where participants were able to speak directly to MPs and policy makers about what it means to live with HIV and the implications of economic and welfare policy on HIV positive people. Geoffrey Bowden, chair of Brighton and Hove City Council's economic development and culture committee, was delighted local libraries had hosted the project. He said: "The voices of people living with HIV need to be heard. Their stories challenge prejudice and will inspire those affected by HIV, but who continue to live in the shadows. “I really hope as many people as possible get to visit the Speaking Volumes display and listen to the personal testimonies while it is on tour in East Sussex libraries." For more information about the Speaking Volumes project and the latest venues visit: www. speakingvolumesproject.org.

Summer of Ghosts by PD Viner The market for crime novels is huge. Massive. Ginormous. It seems we can’t get enough of them - from scandi-noir to good oldfashioned whodunnits. Agatha Christie is still ranked best-selling author and is still the most borrowed author from the libraries. It is, I think, a very English thing, too. Not that other countries are lacking in their own crime genres, but we do rather love them here. I think we can blame a lot on Midsomer Murders for that. It seems to me that PD Viner has joined a very illustrious band with this book. It’s a haunting tale of memory and mortality. It could so easily have become a book about revenge (after
all, what father wouldn’t want the most terrible revenge on the murderer of his daughter?). But then, not every daughter's father is a notorious London drug lord. Franco will call in every debt that he’s ever been owed to find the murderer, including a debt owed to him by DI Tom Bevans. Bevans has his own ghosts to lay to rest, with every unsolved crime weighing heavily on his shoulders. This is a genuinely fascinating and entertaining book. If you like crime novels that are a bite above the rest and enjoy some clever plotting, then this is for you. The book raises some interesting questions about loss and remembering loved ones with a clarity of vision and hard won emotional control. DI Tom Bevans is set to be a classic detective.

It is time we all got to grips with our stickiest problem Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
Long ago, in normal times, before the current bunch of incumbents occupied the town hall, Councillor Mary Mears, the thenleader of the council, made the very wise decision to purchase a machine to cleanse our filthy streets of chewing gum. Cllr Mears attended three demonstrations at separate sites. With the assurance of officers that one of these machines would make a big difference to the cleanliness of our city, she authorised the purchase. The price was a whopping £120,000 and the decision was not taken lightly. But with the disgusting state of our streets in the forefront of their minds, a solution had to be found and, as far as the officers and councillors of the day were concerned, this machine would go some way towards solving the problem.
cleaning our streets is because it is broken and nobody knows how to fix it. Oh really? Well, I for one don't buy that nonsense. No company sells a machine like that without a full back-up service, so why have we not consulted with them? Perhaps Councillor Kitcat would like to tell us, in his next "aren't we great?" column, exactly what's happened to it. In case anyone hasn't noticed, So where is this our streets are machine? What happened filthier than ever. to it - as surely it couldn't The chewing gum curse has got even just disappear, could it?” worse as the student population increases slipped from public view when - and we could well do with the last administration was a couple of these machines voted out. Also, it wouldn't be a bad chewing gum machine should be idea for schools and colleges voted out as well. Apparently, the reason to include some commonthis very expensive piece of sense instructions about how equipment is not working away to dispose of chewing gum So where is this machine? What happened to it - as surely it couldn't just disappear, could it? There are indeed plenty of things the average city resident would like to see disappear associated with this regime, but I doubt the chewing gum removal machine is anywhere on that list. I have been asking about the whereabouts of this very valuable machine, which apparently

There can be little doubt that most of our residents would like to see our city centre cleaned up. Our council needs to lead the way on this and then perhaps private enterprise would follow suit. Councillors should be encouraged to walk around the city with groups of business ratepayers and professional cleaning advisers to discuss the

very simple ways we can improve the cleanliness of our streets. It is obvious to anyone - whether they be resident or visitor - that our city centre streets need properly cleansing on a regular basis. The only people who don't seem to understand are the very group that have been elected to look after our city. Let's hope, whichever group of smiling wafflers are voted in next May, they actually have enough sense to tackle this very simple problem. It really is not rocket science. Let's stick it to them!

Conversations New deal for our city As published in Brighton & Hove Independent on September 26, without any council tax increases, the budget cuts facing Brighton and Hove City Council are over £100 million a year by 2019/20. That will take the net budget (the bit made up of local taxes and a general government grant) down to £125 million from £225 million now. That gives a much better reflection of the scale of the problems faced. Forget the £700 million-plus figure, as most of that covers ring-fenced budgets such as council housing and schools, as your article pointed out. The budget now also includes new responsibilities that the government has dumped on the council without full funding. This government promises more cuts, particularly to the poorest and disabled, and the opposition offers more cuts on top of the current Tory cuts. We face a ‘do or die’ situation like many other communities up and down the country. To offset the cuts in a conventional manner, council tax would need to double. That would hit the poorest and the disabled hardest, yet they rely most on the housing benefit, council tax reduction, care services, discounts on leisure, allotments, bus passes and many other services/support. There’s £1 million a year between Tories’ and Labour’s budget proposals, and £4 million between Labour and the Greens, yet the budget hole is £100 million. Do we give in and say nothing can be done? Efficiencies and the smaller cuts have mostly run out. Council

officers are already proposing to triple the council tax bills of the poorest residents. Remember, the majority of benefit claimants are in work. We must not become a Westminster-on-sea. Rents have rocketed by 27% in the past year, pushing more and more to claim housing benefit. I’m co-ordinating a campaign, New Deal for Brighton and Hove, for the city council to investigate legal measures we propose, to cut council tax bills for 90% and upwards of city households, save services and build affordable homes by increasing the tax burden on the top 10% or less of the city’s property wealthy. Homes worth more than £600,000 account for just 7% of properties, and homes over £1,000,000 account for just over 1%. These households pay tiny proportions in comparison to the poorest households. We also propose that no-one in an expensive property with little income face larger bills. We must not stand idly by and let the main parties destroy the lives of the poor and sick. My sick friend experienced benefit cuts and died due to a cold flat. How many more have died? How many more must die before we tell our politicians to adopt a real alternative. If Westminster won’t help, we must help ourselves. Please sign the petition at www. newdeal4brightonhove.org/ petition. I’ll be presenting it to Brighton and Hove City Council on October 23 at Hove Town Hall. Do come along. David Walker

Fairness and Leigh Farrow I am a regular reader of your paper and satisfied, in most of the cases, with your local issues coverage. Regrettably, it is not the case regarding your reporting on Councillor Leigh Farrow’s alleged mistreatment by his fellow Labour councillors. I have no allegiance to the local Labour Party, nor any other party, but I am disturbed by the manner in which your paper has reported this latest Labour Party in-fighting saga. Over the last two weeks, the readers have had front pages and still more stories coming from the banned and aggrieved Cllr Farrow and his colleagues, yet so far not even a small paragraph from the other side of the wrangle. Readers expect a more objective and balanced picture, with the chance to hear also the other side’s reasons for their controversial decision.

Freedom to be foolish It is deeply worrying when a councillor is disciplined by fellow councillors - even when he has said something as asinine as Councillor Ben Duncan did in his two infamous tweets. Cllr Duncan's comments may have been ill-judged jokes, as he claims in his article on page 8 today - or thoughtless insults, as many would argue. It is difficult to be certain on the evidence of 140 characters. But for an elected representative to be hauled in front of a "star

chamber" simply for exercising freedom of speech, within the law, is a bad precedent. Indeed, it is in danger of becoming a habit in Brighton and Hove. Remember the case of Councillor Dawn Barnett and her "golliwog" comment? It is for the citizens of Queen's Park to decide Cllr Duncan's fate. And they will get their chance on May 7 next year. After all, if councillors were to be disciplined every time they made asinine comments, who would be left to run the city?

Union bosses have announced a further three days of industrial action as the dispute between Brighton and Hove City Council and refuse workers rumbles on. GMB members will strike on October 16, 17 and 20 in the latest of a string of walkouts. Union bosses are playing hardball in their attempts to force the council to recognise the qualifications and work demands of their lorry drivers who the union believe deserve better pay and working conditions.
Brighton and Hove City Council has been highly commended for two of its major transport schemes in this year’s National Transport Awards. The commendations were made in the Improvements to Bus Services category for the Lewes Road Sustainable Transport Corridor and the Road Safety, Traffic Management & Enforcement category for the Seven Dials road safety scheme. More than 35,000 over 65s living in Brighton and Hove are being encouraged to get vaccinated against seasonal flu.Last year 24,700 at risk pensioners underwent the vaccination, leaving around 11,000 at risk. Brighton and Hove City Council wants to avoid a repeat figure this winter. Thirteen residents were admitted to intensive care last year with seasonal flu and although nobody died from it locally, there were 98 deaths nationally.
The Brighton 10k fun-run is just a few weeks away and Brighton and Hove Albion’s charitable wing, Albion in the Community (AITC), is hoping people taking part in the event will consider raising funds for the charity. The event takes place on November 16 and, with the Brighton Half Marathon in February and the city’s full marathon in April, there are plenty of opportunities for local runners to raise funds for AITC. Anyone who does register to fundraise for AITC will receive
a free running shirt, and those running in the half and/or full marathon will also receive a free training session with the Brighton and Hove Albion medical team Millie Lanz, AITC fundraising and events manager, said: “In previous years we have had the generous support of a number of passionate fundraisers and we are eager to expand on those numbers and see more people fly the flag for AITC in the future." A site of literary pilgrimage that deserves to be saved Graham Chainey
Sussex is unusually rich in sites of literary interest, so many famous writers having formerly lived or stayed here. In the east of the county, there is Rudyard Kipling’s magnificent Bateman’s, near Burwash; Lamb House in Rye, home successively to Henry James and EF Benson; and Sheila Kaye-Smith’s Doucegrove in Northiam, not far from Rye. Then there is Monk’s House in Rodmell, where Leonard and Virginia Woolf once lived; the house at Ripe where Malcolm Lowry died; JM Barrie’s medieval Stonehill House, near Chiddingly; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Windlesham Manor at Crowborough; AA Milne’s Cotchford Farm, on the edge of Ashdown Forest; John Galsworthy’s Bury House, near Arundel; Hilaire Belloc’s Shipley Mill; the house in Eastgate Square, Chichester, where John Keats stayed; and Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Aldworth House at Black Down, near Haslemere, with its view of “Green Sussex fading
into blue, with one grey glimpse of sea”. But one of the most poignant sites of literary pilgrimage has to be William Blake’s thatched cottage at Felpham, near Bognor, which is currently for sale, and which the admirable Blake Society hopes to acquire and turn into a centre where his imaginative legacy can be perpetuated - if they can raise the special price of £520,000 before the end of this month. They have initiated a crowdfunding campaign. Blake was a visionary artist and poet who only the once left his native London. In 1800, he accepted an offer from William Hayley, a wealthy patron and collector of artworks, to come and work for him. He, his wife, Kate, and his sister arrived in September, with 16 heavy boxes and portfolios, and were initially delighted with the cottage. “Away to sweet Felpham for heaven is there,” he wrote, shortly before leaving Lambeth; “The ladder of angels descends through the air ...” And, on arrival, he enthused that the cottage “is more beautiful than I thought it, and also more convenient, for though small it is well proportioned, and
if I should ever build a palace it would be only my cottage enlarged.” From the bedrooms, they could see the sea beyond the cornfields, with sails on the glittering water. Blake liked Sussex and Sussex people. “Chichester is a very handsome
William Blake’s thatched cottage at Felpham, near Bognor

city. The country is most beautiful, and the people are genuine Saxons, handsomer than the people about London. Sussex is certainly a happy place, and Felpham in particular is the sweetest spot on earth.” During his three years at Felpham, Blake worked hard decorating Hayley’s library at nearby Turret House, engraving illustrations, and learning to make
miniatures. And it was while there that he wrote much of his epic poem “Milton”, including the introductory poem “And did those feet” (popularly known as “Jerusalem”). Here he witnessed a fairy’s funeral, heard “voices of celestial inhabitants”, took tea by a wood fire with “the wind singing above our roof and the sea roaring at a distance”, studied Greek and Hebrew, and declaimed “Paradise Lost” to his wife as they sat naked in the garden. But Blake was far too individualistic to submit for long to the bidding of someone like Hayley,
with his limited imagination (“as a painter, his views and mine are opposite”). He began to feel he was prostituting his genius. “The visions were angry with me at Felpham,” he later recalled. Moreover, the cottage gave Mrs Blake “agues and rheumatisms”. And then there was the unfortunate incident of the belligerent dragoon in the garden, the ensuing accusation of sedition, and the stress of the trial at Chichester quarter sessions in January 1804, before finally Blake was free of Hayley, Sussex, and the law. Graham Chainey is a freelance writer living in Brighton and Hove.
...GONE GIRL This week it seems everyone is talking about Gone Girl. Showings of the thriller were sold out in many of Brighton’s cinemas this weekend. The film tells the tale of an unhappily married woman ‘Amy’ (Rosamund Pike) who suddenly goes missing under suspicious circumstances. Leaving her husband ‘Nick’ (Ben Alfleck) accused of her murder. I am not a fan of thrillers but as a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator working with separating couples given the subject matter I thought I should see what all the hype was about. Moreover what messages it was going to send to its massive audience about marriage and separation. In its purest form, “Gone Girl” is a story of revenge. The marriage at the centre of the film is a troubled one. The sources of the conflict are common, ones I see everyday: financial difficulties; a loss sexual interest; boredom, tensions with the
in-laws and wider family; But there’s worse: Nick has been both unfaithful and on occasion violent to his wife. Not physically but undoubtedly crossing an unspoken line.
Although not verbally articulated what both Nick and Amy seem to be trying to say is “I am not that person, I don’t have the energy to pretend to be the person you thought I was anymore’
In many ways Gone Girl reminded me of Fatal Attraction another huge film with a cynical take on relationships. The adulterous husband is no saint but the revenge poured on him is disproportionate – but of course tales of personal vengeance and retribution make for riveting cinema.
I find this is common tension when a one partner starts to realise their relationship is ending; harder still is then the realisation that the other person has been feeling the same thing
However there is another narrative running through the film Gone Girl that interested me more. The film explores many of the current debates around marriage as a source of personal fulfilment. Beginning with the voice over “What are you thinking, what are you feeling, what have we done to each other?” Familiar questions to most couples going through difficulties no doubt!
In the world of social media your public image is increasingly something that you can manipulate and construct; however a public persona may be completely at odds with who you really are and how you feel about yourself, your life and your relationship. Gone Girl for me was melodramatic and over the top in places but its message that there are two sides to every story is a powerful one, as is the tension between a couple’s personal and public life. Both are debates that I feel separating couples will identify with on some level.

¨ Give a dog a home campaign
Br ighton & Hove
Independent
Fact file:
Winston the bulldog Ever the community newspaper, Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. Each week the paper will feature a different dog currently awaiting rehoming. First up is Winston the bulldog.
Name: Winston Breed: Bulldog Age: 5 Sex: Male Dogs Trust Shoreham on Winston: "He has such a wonderful character and is a massive favourite with everyone who is lucky enough to know him. "He is a very sweet boy who loves his food and tasty chews almost as much as he loves the company of people. Winston walks beautifully on the lead and is happy to travel in the car. "He is looking for a home where owners can cater for his needs by not leaving him home alone or by taking him out with them. Our team would be happy to discuss progressing his training to help him feel happier about being on his own for short periods. "He needs an adult only home with no visiting children and cannot share his new home with another dog or cat - as he likes all the attention to himself. "Winston does require a home with a garden and won’t be able to tackle lots of flights of stairs due to his legs. "As to be expected with a slightly older bulldog he requires daily cleaning and eye treatment. He will be on rehomed on our Shared Adoption Scheme which means that Dogs Trust will pay for his existing medical conditions excluding routine treatments and the first £7.50 for each visit to the vets. "He is looking for a fairly local home so he can continue his first class veterinary treatment with the veterinary staff he knows and trusts."
Can you offer Winston a home? If you can, call the Rehoming Centre on 01273 452576. Information on all animals in need of a new home is online at: www.dogstrust.org.uk.
What’s in a name? How to decide what to call your pet Gavin McAulay
One of the first things to consider when getting a new pet is what to call it. Gavin McAulay of New Priory Vets Brighton, discusses how best to make a decision. One of the many excitements that come with getting a new pet is deciding on the perfect name. How owners choose a particular name is a source of constant intrigue to vets. Pets, like people, are often named in expectation of what their personality might be like. Pet names often reflect the lives and personalities of their parents, though obviously that is their owners really. There are the traditional, dependable Labradors with names like Winston and Henry, and West Highland White terriers named Snowy, or Wee Jock. Then there are new and unlikely names inspired by popular culture, which come in and out of fashion: plenty of children named new kittens Harry,
Ron, Hermione or even Lord Voldemort. For fans of gritty American crime drama, The Wire, naming their cats after gangsters Bird, Omar or cop McNulty was an obvious choice. We frequently come across names that people have put a lot of thought into: the cold mouse killer called Mr Big, or my favourite, the inscrutable Chairman Meow (never abbreviated) whilst cats called ‘kitten’ clearly acquired their name by default.
There are animals that sound like they really
01273 540 430 (24h) The Veterinary Hospital, The Deneway, London Road, Brighton BN1 OBG
should be people: Colin the rat or Michael the Border Collie. And you might be surprised that both Satan the Staffordshire bull terrier and his owner were surprisingly cheery; while a dog with the innocent sounding name of Gladys was absolutely terrifying to anyone attempting to enter the same room as her. Business Awards shortlist spot for Brighton PR firm’s work An award-winning Brighton-based PR firm has been shortlisted ahead of one of the industry’s flagship award ceremonies. Midnight Communications, which is based at 28 Foundry Street, has been shortlisted for the Best Community Engagement Campaign at the UK-wide Social Media Communication Awards. It is one of the most-heavily contested categories in the awards and Midnight Communications is up against seven other firms. The Brighton business has been shortlisted in recognition of its use of social media on behalf of Sky Sports Living for Sport project. Living for Sport is a free secondary school initiative that looks to use sport stars and sports skills to boost confidence in pupils, have a positive impact on their behaviour and improve their life skills. Midnight Communications’ social media campaign for Sky Sports Living for Sport has seen the initiative’s presence on Twitter grow from a standing start to more than
15,000 followers in just three years. A strong Facebook community has also been cultivated, helping to bring the free secondary schools initiative to life through content-rich posts. Caraline Brown, managing director of Midnight Communications, was delighted with the news. She said: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted at a national awards scheme with a seriously impressive list of past winners.” Midnight’s work on behalf of Sky Sports Living for Sport is currently shortlisted for two further Awards at the forthcoming CIPR PRIDE - with the winners announced at the end of next month. It is up for Best Sporting Campaign and Best Use of Social Media. And the firm’s work with Arundel Castle has also been shortlisted for an industry award. Midnight will find out whether it has been successful in the Social Media Communication Awards on Thursday, October 23 at The Emirates Stadium, London – home of Premier League giants Arsenal.

Brighton Chamber top tips: PR can be free Jill Woolf
Over the coming weeks members of the Brighton Business Chamber will continue to share their expertise and advice with readers. This week Jill Woolf, managing director of Chimera Communications, who led yesterday’s bite-sized learning session on the topic PR can be free, gives her top tips: PR means educating and informing in a planned and sustained way, raising your profile and managing your reputation. OK, so it sounds fairly counterintuitive for a PR consultant to say this, but if you have little or no budget and want to publicise your new business or a particular project, there are definitely some low cost ways in which you can help yourself. Social media Free accounts for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc give you instant access to a global

The event, at Preston Park, was part of an initiative set up by the team behind the

fantastic event encouraging children to take part in sport and learn about the countries of the world. Southern Water is making a major contribution to the fitness of local children.” Ms Lucas, said: “It feels very inclusive. It is not just about who can run the fastest but about being together, getting fit and having fun.” This is the fourth year that the organisers have staged Run the World. Last year almost 7,000 children took part. The aim is to grow the event every year. Tim Hutchings, event organiser, said: “Support from our sponsors helps us encourage children to take part in a physical activity with an element of competition. Some of these children may go on to run the mini mile race which is part of the Brighton Marathon weekend.” Beverley Thompson, senior public relations manager at Southern Water, said: “The message from Mr Drink-It is simple - drink water and stay hydrated. Getting that message across to children in a fun way is a great way to encourage them to stay healthy and active.”
audience to shout about what you do - but be careful how you do it. Social media isn’t about overt selling, it’s about targeting those whom you consider are decision-makers and opinionformers, and who can act as brand advocates on your behalf. In other words, getting other people to say how wonderful you are always makes better sense than saying it yourself. You’re also trying to build up your social network and build relationships with likeminded people or businesses in a mutually beneficial way. And you don’t have to be online all day long. Dashboards like Hootsuite enable you to schedule messages on various social media channels in advance, so your time can be managed to your own advantage.
start. One thing’s for certain you could spend all day, every day networking if you wanted to. But it would mean potentially drinking inordinate amounts of tea or coffee and eating beyond the call of duty! Making sure you target which events or groups you go to is the key to this one. Try to get a copy of the delegate list beforehand and pick two or three special people whom you would like to meet. Then make sure you’re introduced to them, ask them how you or your business could help them achieve their goals, and don’t forget to follow up afterwards.
Networking In this area, there are so many different networking groups that it’s really bewildering to know where to

Petrushka Lee, James Dempster from Cobb Digital with Paul Yallop, leader of Worthing Borough Council outside one of Worthing’s £1 to park car parks
A strong digital marketing campaign to promote car parking in Worthing has seen a local PR firm short-listed for a national award. Hove-based Cobb Digital and Worthing Borough Council are up against six other companies and local authorities in the public sector category of the UK Social Media Communications Award. The company, run by managing director James Dempster, took gold in the awards last year. The campaign highlighted the cheaper parking offer at some multi-storey car parks and encouraged motorists to change their parking habits and give it a try. It proved successful and over the months has seen a steady
increase in drivers using the car parks. Paul Yallop, leader of Worthing Borough Council, said: “It was a clever, well-planned campaign that promoted a cheaper car parking tariff to the people of Worthing and beyond. I am delighted that the work of the council and Cobb Digital has been recognised by being shortlisted for this national award.” Mr Dempster said he was delighted that the campaign had been recognised as one of the best in the UK and added: “We carry out social media campaigns like this for a number of clients in the Southeast. Cobb Digital has a great team on board delivering exceptional results on a regular basis.”

Brighton start-up froyo brand Smarta100 Awards success Lick, the popular Brighton-based frozen yogurt company, has been named as one of the winners of this year’s O2 Smarta 100 - taking top prize in in the Best Use of Marketing category. The business index is published by Smarta.com and O2 Business every year to reward the UK’s savviest, supremely disruptive, most resourceful and sociallybeneficial small businesses. The O2 Smarta 100 seeks to find the best small firms in the UK and celebrates innovation, creativity and original ideas in the business world. And this year Lick was selected for the prominent awards, whose past winners include Mixcloud, the online music streaming service, and Graze, a healthy snack box delivery company. Lick is an independent brand of frozen yogurt, founded by friends Ky and Owen who met in school and started making and selling froyo in their summer holidays, aged 17. They opened the UK’s first frozen yogurt store in Brighton’s North Laine in 2006 and have since
moved into a warehouse space in New England House, where they experiment with new recipes and production techniques in a bid to create the creamiest, best-tasting frozen yogurt in the world. The warehouse is home to their other projects, including Lick yoga, live music sessions (Lick also releases albums) and in-house artist residencies. They invite the public to join them and share with them their love of music, art and frozen yogurt. With forays into the world of music, art and culture, no surprise that Lick creates a buzz amongst its fans and as such, has been recognised as an official Cool Brand. Lick has also been showcased in the Guardian for its excellence in PR and marketing and been listed in the 75 most innovative, Brighton-based startups, SMEs and tech firms. Lick is proud of its achievements and the fact that its yogurt is the only 100% yogurt froyo in the world. This has helped it win over some of the biggest and bestknown retailers in the UK; Lick can now be found in Sainsbury’s,

One Man, Two Guvnors comes home for Christmas at the Theatre Royal Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Christmas in Theatreland is usually the preserve of the pantomime but this year the Theatre Royal is shunning Cinderella et al in favour of a critically-acclaimed comedy. What’s more, it is set here in Brighton and Hove. One Man, Two Guvnors has a three-week run starting on December 16. Brighton & Hove Independent met with some of the cast to find out more. Weeks ahead of their first appearance on stage at the Theatre Royal but still looking resplendent in their period dress, Gavin Spokes and Emma Barton can’t hide their excitement at the prospect of performing One Man, Two Guvnors in Brighton - the city in which the hugely-popular play is set. The pair, who play the show’s central characters Francis Henshall and Dolly respectively, may have just popped down for a publicity photo shoot, but they are already getting into the Christmas spirit. One senses they cannot wait to get cracking. One Man, Two Guvnors isn’t traditional panto, but, if the critics and fans are to be believed, it is a lot of fun. And not just for the audience. “To get paid to get dressed up and be silly is wonderful,” enthuses Barton, best known for her role as Honey on Eastenders. “The play is just so brilliantly written it is a breath of fresh air. I am absolutely loving it. The people who come and see it leave the theatre just blown away.” The play, which is midway through a UK tour, is a world away from Barton’s Albert Square background. It may be part set in London and involve some shady characters, but that is where the similarity ends. One Man, Two Guvnors, you see, comes complete with laughs and
lots of them. But what exactly can people expect? Other than the show is set in Brighton and once starred Gavin and Stacey’s James Cordon, most people probably don’t know an awful lot about it. Luckily, Spokes is on hand to elaborate: “It is kind of the hardest play to ever describe. “In a nutshell it is about a man who gets hired by a bloke in London to act as his minder and then he arrives in Brighton and within five minutes he has then got another guvnor. “At the same time there is various sub plots going on, including some cross dressing, and the rest of the play is about my character trying to keep the two men apart. There is also a love interest and various other characters that get caught up in the action. “We like to say it is a cross between an adult panto and a Carry on Film.” Part of the appeal to local audience is obviously the Brighton and Hove setting. And, according to Spokes, it works perfectly. But why Brighton in 1963? The play One Man, Two Guvnors is based on was set in Venice. So what made writer Richard Bean adapt the Carlo Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters to London and Brighton in the swinging sixties? The original idea was that of director Nicholas Hytner, who explained: “I asked Richard Bean to transfer it from eighteenth century Venice to post-war Brighton. I reckoned Brighton and Venice, as far as this play was concerned, were interchangeable. “A lot of the Italian comedies take place in Venice which was a very louche city – a city you went to for a dirty weekend. It has been a party city longer than any other European city. It ceased to be an influential and significant centre for
European trade in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and became a tourist or carnival city. “In The Servant of Two Masters, the protagonists escape from Turin, the big city, and hole up in Venice where inevitably funny and complicated things happen to them. Brighton’s relationship to London is much the same. It’s a place with lots of hotels, far enough away from London that you might easily disappear into it if you are on the run from the law. It’s a place with seedy picture comic postcards. “Brighton felt right, as did various English comic traditions like variety, end-of the pier farce, Ealing comedy and Carry On films. They all felt like they were coming from the same place. So I floated all these ideas to Richard Bean. I’m not quite sure if we were talking 1940s Brighton, 50s Brighton or 60s Brighton. He eventually alighted upon the early 60s Brighton - around the time that sex was invented, according to the
close to everyone’s hearts.” An enthusiastic Spokes adds: “The show is never the same any two nights. “You can say that for any piece of theatre but there is a big element of audience participation and I have to improvise quite a lot and it is ridiculously physically demanding. “It is a show where a lot of people who come probably haven’t been to the theatre since they were a kid and come thinking they don’t want to be dragged along. But, without speaking too soon, they enjoy it. “It has an end of the pier feel to it and the comedy has lots of different avenues, there is a lot of slapstick and lot of witty stuff, some more high-brow comedy. It is mainly just to make people laugh.” For a full list of performance dates and times, or to book tickets, visit: www.atgtickets.com/brighton, call 0844 871 7650 or visit the venue’s box office in person.

Philip Larkin poem. 1963 was the year he suggested - between the Lady Chatterley trial and the first Beatles LP.” It was a process which Bean clearly relished, even if he did originally argue for wartime London over sixties Brighton. One of his inputs was the introduction of a skiffle band and music is central to the show, with performances from a live band before, during and after the play. At its heart, however, is comedy and involving the audience at every available opportunity. In fact, according to Barton, the encouraged audience participation is not only what makes the play so fun to act in, but also makes it the perfect festive evening’s entertainment. “The audience are the final part of the jigsaw really,” she said, “another member of the company. “Having three weeks in Brighton is going to be brilliant because, with the play set here, the city is very

This week's must-see Mark Steel Brighton Dome, Corn Exchange Saturday, October 11, 7.30pm. Award-winning comedian, writer and social commentator Mark Steel appears at Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange tomorrow night (Saturday) in what promises to be one of the stand-out standup shows of this year’s Brighton Comedy Festival. The live show of Steel's double Sony Award-winning Radio 4 Show Mark Steel’s In Town is back with a vengeance and Steel
himself cannot wait to perform in front of his local audience living, as he does, in Brighton and Hove. Talking about the show, he said: “I’ve stood behind a Londoner on a cliff in Dorset, who said to his wife, ‘That lighthouse is getting on my bloody wick.’ I’ve seen rivalries such as that in Corby, when I thanked a librarian for finding me a book and she replied, ‘Yes, because here we’re not like those miserable arses from Kettering.’ I’ve even read a book called A
History of the Railway in Didcot that starts: ‘This book is in no way a history of the railway in Didcot.’ “For this show I’ve found dozens more towns to humiliate, as well as pledging to discover what makes your own town ridiculous. There will be pictures, and ranting, some people will call things out, and you’ll be a far better audience than the miserable arses from down the road.” Tickets, priced £15, are available direct from the venue or online at: www. brightoncomedyfestival.com.

What makes Team Association agents stand out from the crowd if you are moving long distance? If you have a particular location in mind, there are a number of independent estate agency groups that can help you. Called referral networks, these all basically function in the same way: you register with your nearest participating agent, and your contact details and property requirements are then passed through the system to the agent nearest your chosen location. Note that I specifically said “independent” agency groups. The reason why referral networks actually work is that the two agents involved – the one who refers you, and the one you buy through – agree to split the sales commission between them. Even though they share a common brand, the big national chains don’t tend to have those kinds of arrangements in place - which means that your local branch has no real incentive to help, because they won’t earn anything from doing so.
Another alternative is to commission a “home finder” firm to do the legwork on your behalf – for a fee, of course – although this is generally more applicable at the higher end of the market. But what if you are not wedded to any particular location? With such a wide remit, home finder firms would either turn the coUmmission down altogether, or understandably want to charge you the earth for searching such a large area. For the same reason, conventional referral networks might also struggle, since this would necessarily involve referring your details to perhaps dozens of different agents in different towns. This is where a concept called “multi-listing” really comes into its own. Multilisting agents basically share all their properties. Common in places like the USA, the only genuine multilisting system in the UK is
operated by Team – a network of independent high street agents, linked by some highly sophisticated technology. This gives Team agents the unique ability to provide you – at the touch of a button - with full details of literally hundreds of properties, practically anywhere in the country. To get a feel for how team agents work, if you go to our site www.bonetts.co.uk and enter Finchley in the ‘search bar’, you will have details of properties there you could buy via us. Yes, and vice versa. That’s the beauty of multilisting estate agents. I don’t understand why more agents do not do it as surely it is in the client’s interests to maximise the property’s spread. Food and Drink

Head chef is clearly talented with great eye for menu design North Laine boozer Fountain Head sits on the corner of North Road and Cheltenham Place. Named after the famous Ayn Rand novel, this Drink In Brighton venue has many quintessential pub attributes: log fire, large oak tables, good alcohol selection and a welcoming atmosphere. But is the food worth a look? Having recently revamped their menu and taken brand new head chef, Lorena Corso, under their wing, The Fountain Head explores both current food trends and also toys with more traditional pub dishes. The menu is broken down into starters and snacks, sandwiches, burgers and mains. Desserts change regularly and are chalked on one of the pubs many boards. Burgers are popular across many demographics and this craze shows no sign of slowing down. We see more pubs veering toward serving meat patties and buns. Yet what was refreshing about the Fountain Head was that - yes, burgers are on the menu - but these weren’t the only plates available to order. Think

This starter was plated vibrantly, the mix of colours really stood out against the white plate. The chorizo scotch egg contained a perfectly cooked, soft boiled egg encased in both a wrap of well seasoned minced pork and chorizo, with a light coating of breadcrumbs. An interesting idea and one that was executed well. It would have been great to see some more authentic Spanish flavours in place of mustard and pickles, however, the homemade ‘slaw added a good crunch to the plate and rendered this starter a great pre-main nibble. Again, the presentation was beautiful. The green of the rocket and red of diced tomatoes really caught my eye on A combination of food trends and traditional dishes this summery dish. well-spiced chicken sat neatly on top a mountain of red onion, tomato and mint speckled couscous and rocket, with dollops of tzatziki drizzled across the plate. The chicken was comprised of a leg and wing, both gorgeously warm and tender and not at all dry. The mildly spiced chicken complemented the well-cooked couscous perfectly and the mint that ran through the dish contributed a cooling flavour. The portion size was generous and the dish would have been great with a glass of zesty white wine. Overall, an inviting and tasty plate of food. The talent Lorena has is very clear, and she obviously has a great eye for menu design, incorporating both pub favourites and more varied dishes. It will be interesting to see how Lorena integrates Autumnal dishes into the menu; one can only hope for her take on soups, casseroles and crumbles. Visit the Fountain Head and order something other than a burger, if only to experience Lorena’s top presentation. A great new menu and one not to be missed. (Be warned, there’s no going back from this one; once they have the knowledge they will never look at their home beach the same way again). ■ As far as they are concerned, ducks are the stuff of fantasy, save for that one trip to Queen’s Park many moons ago. But even then, they were vastly outnumbered by seagulls. So it’s possible they weren’t spotted. Pretty Good Thinking The new Once collection from Illamasqua is stunning. I made a serious beeline for the vintage metallix eye colour in Bibelot (£16.50). This creamy, buildable smudgy colour evokes Biba in a single pot, 2014 style. The shade is olivey green, with a golden hum in the background. There are so many ways to wear this and it gives off attitude in spades. Pair a metallic eye with amazing nail polish. Like absinthe for your fingertips, Melange sports a greeny-blue velvet base shot through with a sandy-gold metallic finish - an instant hit with major staying power (£14.50). I don’t feel dressed without a dab of iridescent Aurora highlighter (£20), the gleam that makes this campaign so ethereal. I used it to mark along the waterline and discretely accent. As it¹s not a soft “khol”, it gives only a hint of intensity by the lashes. For impact, smudge out at the corners for a grown-up - rather than attention-seeking - result. I’ll take any excuse to be pale and interesting, but I am still as addicted to eyeliner as ever. I just tried Illamasqua¹s Precision Ink in Havoc (£20) for a plummy hit. This wonderfullydark, enticing shade really brings out the mischief in green eyes. I normally choose a dense black for brown eyes, but this gives a cool wintery warmth with auburn hair. It stayed put for 14 hours during a work trip, so I’m delighted

Albion reveal charity partners for 2014/15 season Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Brighton and Hove Albion have announced a pair of new charity partners for this season - Autism Sussex and Off the Fence. The Seagulls already run the hugely successful Albion in the Community charity, which helps thousands of people across Sussex each year through a myriad of schemes, including sport sessions for disabled people, healthy eating projects and work with local schools. And the Albion already work closely with a number of national and local charities, including the Royal British Legion, Kick it Out, Football v Homophobia and Show Racism the Red Card. The club have, however, decided to officially pair up with Autism Sussex and Off the Fence for the duration of the 2014/15 season in an effort to help them raise their profile and generate much-needed additional funds. Paul Barber, the club’s chief executive, explained: “These are
two very worthy local charities, doing fantastic work in the Sussex community. “Throughout the season, we will be seeking to engage fans in ways that they can help both organisations along with our own charitable arm Albion in the Community and other existing charity partners.” Autism Sussex aims to enable people with an autistic spectrum condition to receive the help and specialist support services they and their families need. It provides short breaks for children and young people including after-school clubs, Saturday clubs, school holidays and communitybased activities – with a focus on inspiring youngsters to engage in a wide variety of activities. Chris Board, Autism Sussex CEO, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by Brighton and Hove Albion. Working together will provide the opportunity to enable children and young people with autism to experience activities that would not usually be available. “We also hope that this partnership will provide a platform to raise awareness of autism

spectrum conditions and the impact this has on the children and their families.” The second charity, Off the Fence, was established more than 17 years ago by local people with a vision to end poverty in all forms around the city of Brighton and Hove. Working in some of the most deprived areas, with some of the city’s most vulnerable individuals,
the charity runs Antifreeze: one of the busiest homeless day centres in the city, providing life-saving support to local homeless people. Paul Young, CEO and founder of the charity, said: “Brighton and Hove is our passion and we have invested a lot to see it transformed for the better. “We have also proved that anyone can make a massive difference

The crowds at recent home friendlies, which vary from around 40,000 to 80,000, would suggest that a full England International at the Amex is some way off. I believe games in the top-flight of English football on the continent are inevitable in the next few years. Of course it is another money-making scheme but I think fans would enjoy the change and those from clubs who do not feature in European competitions would certainly enjoy a trip a l’etranger. Could it even filter down to the Championship? Ok logistically there may be issues but I would suggest a two week period where teams could base themselves in France or Spain and play a few games against their rivals. August would be hot but supporters might enjoy weaving the matches into holiday plans. Monaco in
January anyone? Madrid in March? Clubs would obviously take a hit financially for say one home game that wasn’t in the UK but in my view might provide a welcome change to the current set-up. It might also attract a few from abroad over to our shores. Could football fans in Northern France be tempted by a trip to Sussex? There is already a healthy contingent from Holland who make the trip. I know some supporters are frustrated by the lack of Saturday home games at 3pm at the Amex but let me know what you think. Now, where’s my passport?
Brighton and Hove Albion’s ticket package aimed at Saturday footballers and weekend workers - which also includes free Seagulls Priority bronze or Young Seagulls Plus membership - is still available for four evening fixtures. The Floodlit Four includes all of Albion's remaining Tuesday night Championship fixtures at the Amex - against Wigan, Leeds, Derby and Huddersfield - and is available to buy from £100 for adults, £80 for over65s, £40 for under-18s and £20 for under-10s. Positive performances from young trio as Seagulls adapt to new boss Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Brighton and Hove Albion have shown supporters they are gradually getting to grips with new boss Sami Hyypiä’s style of play with recent draws against high-flying opponents. The Seagulls currently sit a disappointing 19th in the Championship table but have an international break in which to continue working on how best to implement their manager’s attacking ideals. And, while Albion fans would have surely hoped for a better points return from the opening 11 games of the season, recent results have improved - with both Nottingham Forest and Watford held to a draw. That does not disguise the fact that the Seagulls have struggled to turn encouraging performances into welcome wins but the Amex faithful will have been reassured by the side’s recent unbeaten run. And, while two wins from 11 games is far from promotion form, it certainly hasn’t all been bad as far as the side’s start to the season is concerned. A number of players appear to be thriving under Hyypiä - not least a trio of players who could conceivably prove key parts of the team for the foreseeable future. Lewis Dunk has arguably been the Albion’s stand-out performer so far. The young defender found his first team opportunities limited last season with player of the year Matthew Upson and club captain Gordon Greer the first choice pairing. Upson’s summer departure, though, has proved to be something of a blessing in disguise, allowing Dunk to forge an encouraging partnership with Greer. The defender, who has a pass completion rate of 87% at an average of 52 passes a game, looks increasingly comfortable in possession and is no doubt benefiting from the experience his new manager is able to pass on. Another player who seems to be enjoying life under Hyypiä is

Lewis is a real threat from set-pieces, but I don’t take the credit. He’s a very good lad; he concentrates well in training and we always keep on top of him. “That’s the way to go forward and from my experience, that’s what you need to do. “In football it’s all about having confidence and making the right decisions. He is making the right decisions on the pitch and with his height, I know he has a chance to score every time he goes into the box as he attacks the ball very well. “I had never heard of his name before I came to Brighton, so I didn’t know what to expect from him. I saw a few games from him last season and that he was very comfortable on the ball and a good centre back.”

This season, however, he has started five games and featured in all 11 league outings. In that period he has a goal and a team-high two assists and has made an impressive 15 key passes. Hyypiä’s approach, which involves the full backs providing the width, means Lua Lua has been deployed in a more central position, allowing him to receive the ball more often and in more dangerous areas. It is also harder for defenders to force him out wide. In a team without an abundance of genuine pace, Lua Lua has become a key attacking component whose speed in possession carries a greater threat than when restricted to a single flank. Last of the flourishing three is Jake Forster-Caskey. The midfielder has again been called

up to the England under-21 squad by Gareth Southgate and has already started nine of the Albion’s 11 league games. While not making headlines, Forster-Caskey has developed a solid partnership with Danny Holla at the base of the Seagulls midfield and is establishing himself as one of Hyypiä’s mosttrusted players. In fact, ForsterCaskey averages more passes per game than Holla and has clocked up 427 completed passes compared to the Dutchman’s 381 – including 16 key passes to Holla’s 11. Both have played nine games, although one of Holla’s game off the bench. One player not having such a great time of things at the moment is Andrew Crofts. The experienced Welsh international will miss the rest of the season after suffering a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in last weekend’s draw at Watford.

KAZENGA LUA LUA
Kazenga Lua Lua has enjoyed an encouraging start to the season, contributing a goal and two assists in his 11 league appearances so far. The attacking talent is being used in a more central position by Sami Hyypiä and the shift in tactics appears to be getting the best out of the highly-rated 23-year-old game-changer. He is fast-becoming one of the Albion’s most important attacking options.
