YOU'RE HIRED Thousands benefiting from apprenticeships Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Thousands of young people in Brighton and Hove have benefited from apprenticeships in the last four years - with 1,520 schemes started in the last 12 months alone. New figures show that 7,030 apprenticeship schemes have been started in Brighton and Hove since 2010, split relatively evenly across the city. Broken down into electoral wards the statistics show businesses in Brighton Kemptown have offered 2,700 since 2010 - 590 starting in the last 12 months. Hove has seen 2,340 apprenticeships in the same period with 520 started in the last year, and Brighton Pavilion 1,990 in total and 410 in the last year. The coalition government has prioritised finding apprenticeship
places for young people and David Cameron has pledged to fund an extra three million places across the UK by 2020. Clarence Mitchell, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion, welcomed the statistics. He said: “These figures are great news 1,990 new apprenticeships since 2010 means more young people in Brighton Pavilion getting the skills they’ll need for the future, as they are locally at Brighton and Hove City Council and many other city employers.” Unemployment among the 1824 age group is also falling locally, according to figures published by the House of Commons Library. The number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in the age range last month dropped significantly in each electoral ward in Brighton and Hove.

Brighton Kemptown had 315 JSA claimants aged 18-24 in September, a figure 150 less than the same time last year. That represents a drop of 32.3%. In Hove that figure was 235 down 105 claimants, or 30.9%, from last year. And in Brighton Pavilion was 315 - down 125, or 28.4% from last year. JSA claimants also fell overall. Brighton Kemptown recorded 1,268 total claimants which was 514 fewer than last year. Hove had 1,224 – 583 less; while Brighton Pavilion saw JSA claimants in September drop by 463 to 1,280. Union bosses, however, claim the figures do not accurately illustrate the current economic climate because they fail to take into account the often low levels of pay being given to workers, many of whom have increasingly insecure employment and reduced working hours.
Strictly star opens mood machine
Ola Jordan, the star of the hit BBC show Strictly Come Dancing, visited Brighton's Palace Pier to unveil a vending machine powered by bad weather. Cereal firm Kellogg’s installed the machine which dispenses a free bowl of corn flakes every time it gets cloudy. The dancer said: “Living in a cloudy country like the UK means we can’t rely on the sunshine for our vitamin D intake and we must find other ways such as food to top up.”

news. He said: “We are delighted and proud to be awarded this funding from Arts Council England. As the first phase of the broader vision for the Royal Pavilion Estate, the development plans for Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and the Studio Theatre form a major part of our goal to be one of Europe’s leading arts festivals and a yearround international destination for artists and audiences. “This is just the start.” The overall development plans will rely on further funding, and applications for the rest of the necessary funding are being worked on. The team behind the bids are confident this initial £5.8 million grant is a step in the right direction. Penny Thompson, chief executive of Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Brighton Dome is a key part of Brighton’s Cultural Quarter and the city’s rich heritage. We want to ensure that it is preserved whilst it also continues to flourish as a vibrant cultural destination for residents, audiences, artists and visitors.
“As the first phase of the larger and longer term ambition to connect, preserve and celebrate the Royal Pavilion Estate, this project is in a unique position; bringing the arts and heritage sectors together to ensure they are sustainable, resilient and innovative, and benefiting audiences, residents, community groups, schools, resident and visiting artists, tourists, conference delegates, the regional digital community and local businesses amongst others.” Hedley Swain, area director, South East, Arts Council England, said: “Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival make an important contribution to the artistic and cultural fabric of Brighton and we are pleased to be able to support its continued development through this capital investment. “This project will enhance the experience that it is able to offer to audiences, whilst also supporting the organisation’s long term resilience – both of which are key to its continued success.”

Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Estate has been given £5.8 million to put towards ambitious plans to breathe new life into the site while preserving the heritage hotspot for generations to come. The Arts Council England awarded the money to Brighton and Hove City Council and Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival - the joint custodians of the estate - and it will go towards funding the first stage of ambitious £35 million proposals to redevelop the site. The long-term goal is to reconnect the historic buildings and landscape of the Royal Pavilion Estate to create a world class destination for heritage, culture and the performing arts. To start with, however, the £5.8 million will be used for the first phase of the project – specifically a refurbishment of the Grade I Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and a major renovation of the Grade II Studio Theatre. The hope is that the work will enable Brighton Dome’s three venues – the Concert Hall, the Corn Exchange and the Studio Theatre - to improve their facilities and attract new audiences as a result. Those behind the plans believe Brighton Festival has the potential to establish itself as one of Europe’s leading arts events. The proposals include a ground floor café at the Studio Theatre, opening on to New Road; a new viewing gallery and extra seating at the Corn Exchange; new offices, catering facilities and back of house accommodation and a service tunnel between the venues. Winners of this year's City Sports and Physical Activity Awards congratulated The winners of this year’s City Sports and Physical Activity Awards were unveiled at a ceremony at the Royal Pavilion this week. The awards are organised by Brighton and Hove City Councils’ sports development team to celebrate local people making a difference to sport and active pursuits in the city. The nominees included sports coaches, teachers and volunteers delivering a wide range of sporting activities across the city. The winners were invited to
the historic Royal Pavilion on Wednesday to hear the full results. Each winner’s story was captured in a short pre-recorded film showing the reasons they beat the rest to top place. Kipling Gardens concern
A former Member of the European Parliament who represented Brighton and Hove has been charged with fraud, deception, false accounting and misconduct in public office. Ashley Mote, 78, MEP for South East England from 2004 to 2009, is due in court on Monday, November 3. The charges relate to his time as an MEP. He was elected as a member of the UK Independence Party but sat as an independent after being thrown out of UKIP.
Westlife’s Shane Filan is appearing at WHSmith in Churchill Square tomorrow (Saturday) to meet fans and sign copies of his new autobiography. The singer will be in store from 12.30pm promoting his book, My Side Of Life: The Autobiography, priced £18.99. As a lead singer of Westlife, one of the most successful pop acts of all time, he achieved 14 No.1 singles (a record beaten only by the Beatles) and sold 44 million records.
The award-winning Kipling Gardens in Rottingdean is under threat of being vandalised, according to Nancy Platts, Labour’s parliamentary hopeful for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven. Ms Platts believes Brighton and Hove Council’s decision to leave the garden unlocked in the evening could attract anti-social behaviour, citing similar problems the last time the garden was left unlocked. She said: “It is a false economy to cut the costs of locking the gardens and then pay to clean up after vandalism.”

Young Builder of the Year runner-up praised Richard Morris @BrightonIndy A student who was homeless during the first six months of her City College Brighton and Hove course has been named joint runner-up in the Youthbuild UK Young Builder of the Year Awards. Vana O’Brien studied Level 2 Bricklaying at City College and went on to be named the college’s overall achiever at its annual awards ceremony earlier this year. And she was celebrating again this week after finishing runnerup in the Youthbuild awards, which were held at the House of Commons and celebrated the achievements of young people who overcame barriers to success in training within the construction industry. Ms O’Brien was homeless for the first six months of her course and initially struggled in terms of attendance. Despite this difficult start and the fact that she was the only female on her course, she persevered, and linked up with college services to secure housing at The Foyer and to build a support network.
And she has since gone from strength to strength. In the last year she passed GCSE maths, the CSCS health and safety test and gained a Level 3 qualification in bricklaying. Throughout this time, Ms O’Brien has also worked on behalf of others, firstly as a course rep and then as a student councillor. Since leaving the college, she has gained employment with Marstons Renovations in Hailsham. Ms O’Brien said: “I had a difficult start at City College but the staff helped me build my confidence and learn new skills. Having already achieved my Level 3 Diploma, getting this award has made this time in my life extra special and I’m grateful for the opportunity to prove to myself and others that I can be the best at what I choose to do. So can everyone, if they refuse to give up.” Lynn Thackway, college principal, was understandably pleased for the former pupil. She said: “The college is delighted for Vana and we’re so proud of her success. “She made a lasting impression on many staff and students at college through her positive
attitude and determination to succeed. While she was at college, she made a huge contribution to helping others, whether it’s the Student Council, organising events for students or charity fund raising. She’s truly inspirational and a well-deserving winner of this award.” For further information on Youthbuild UK, see: www. ybuk.org. Lady Bette and the Murder of Mr Thynn NA Pickford Roll up your sleeves, pour yourself a glass of Madeira, and settle down to some serious reading. Set in 16th-century London, this is a firework of a book. Telling the true story of the richest heiress of the time, Lady Bette, it’s a rollicking, fact-filled book that had me gasping with some of the choice information. For example, did you know that Puppy Water was considered very beneficial for the skin of young girls (rich ones, obviously)? And what actually is Puppy Water, you may well ask? Well, I’ll tell you, but you may want to look away. You have been warned. It is, quite literally, the juices of a roasted puppy mixed with wine. Told you. Also, poor Lady Bette had all her eyebrows removed
and fake ones made of mouse skin stuck on slightly higher than normal to give her a "pleasantly surprised" look that was apparently all the rage. The poor girl was 11. Perhaps it was the precursor of all those women who have regular botox for that oh so pleasing "pleasantly surprised" look. She was married at 12 to her first husband - and that’s when the trouble started. That, and a very interfering grandmother. But Bette was a gal not to be beaten. Anyway, I don’t want to give away too much, but this reads like a whodunnit and is stuffed full of amazing facts that you can show off about for ages. As for Lady Bette, after three marriages and 13 children, she is a fascinating footnote to history. I’m glad I met her.

Preparing for a series of totally unnecessary explosions Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
Well, here we go again, it’s time to batten down the hatches as the lunacy of firework month fast approaches. It never ceases to amaze me how in these days of manic recycling, people are still prepared to add to the planets destruction by setting off totally unnecessary explosions.
What is the point in patting yourself on the back for using a non-aerosol hair spray all year, only to undo all the good you have done by setting off a lot of annoying fireworks in November? It seems these wretched things are used freely, and without any real restriction. Conversations Mike Holland is wrong about trans children Trans Media Watch (www. transmediawatch.org) is a small charity that monitors the representation of trans people in the media and engages with editors and journalists where appropriate to improve the way trans people are represented in newspapers and broadcast media. I would like to discuss the content of Mike Holland's article: "Unisex toilets for fiveyear-olds? Someone's taking the proverbial" (page 14, October 17). I was concerned, in particular, with this: "She went on to say that she wanted families to feel informed about how effectively to support transgender and gender questioning by their children, preventing any transphobia at the school. "You could certainly forget about transgender and gender questioning, if I had young children at your school, Mrs Terrey. Far more to the point, I would be questioning the competence of any of you to be in charge of small children. In fact, I am absolutely mortified that anybody would suggest raising the question of transgender with primary children at all, as this is something that should be brought to their notice much later, when they are of secondary school age." I would like to make some comments, since it is profoundly wrong in a number of respects. It appears to us that Mr Holland has failed to check his facts and as such his journalism has

slipped below an acceptable standard of professionalism that should normally be expected of any journalist. Firstly, every school has a duty, under the Equality Act 2010, to prevent transphobia, just as it has a duty to prevent racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination. Any criticism of the headteacher is effectively criticising her for following the law. I am sure your newspaper does not want to be seen to encourage law-breaking. Secondly, the mean average age at which trans people come to realise they are trans is six and the modal average figure is five. This means that it is most common that trans children become aware they are trans at a very young age. Indeed, four in 10 (80%) say they became aware they were trans before leaving primary school. So Mr Holland's assertion that this is a secondary-school issue is based on an ignorance of the facts. I would suggest Mr Holland receives some training before he writes about trans issues again. We understand that trans issues are perceived to be such a minority issue that awareness of these issues is not very widespread. We feel, however, that it would not be too much to ask that journalists writing about these issues carry out their research properly.

Compelled to write in after trans article
A + A
I haven't written a letter to a news outlet in years, but felt compelled to tonight, having read an absolutely awful article written by Mike Holland. His article about unisex toilets being introduced into a primary school shows alarming ignorance of gender issues. Many primary schools are introducing non-gendered toilets, and a large part of this is about active inclusion for transgender, intersex and nonbinary gender children - who do exist even in infant schools and who are suffering in schools which do not accommodate their needs. Is Mike Holland truly ignorant to the fact than this is about children who are genderquestioning and trans and about how their classmates react to them? This isn't about sitting Key Stage 1 children down for a lesson on gender identity out of the blue, but about ensuring the safety and comfort of very vulnerable young students, who need understanding and respect. I strongly urge Mike Holland to think more about this issue, and to find out more. I am hoping he is merely ignorant of the issues, and not actively trying to incite hatred and discrimination against trans people (and trans children in particular).

The puzzle page is back The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed a slight change in your Brighton & Hove Independent. For the last three editions the paper has been printed without our puzzle page. The company which supplied the page had increased its charges, so the decision was taken to trial the newspaper without it. Clearly we underestimated how popular it was because our inbox was inundated with emails from loyal readers asking where it had gone and whether it could be reinstated.

Crackdown near schools Hippodrome meeting
The pioneering work of Brighton YMCA supporting single homeless people in the city has been recognised by Brighton and Hove Mayor Brian Fitch. Staff and residents joined a reception at the mayor’s parlour to hear their contribution win support from the Councillor Fitch. Peter Field, Brighton YMCA chairman, said: “We have supported single homeless people in Brighton and Hove for the last 150 years and believe we will continue to do so for another 150.”
A parking crackdown around schools in Brighton and Hove got underway this week. Sussex Police and Brighton and Hove City Council are determined to tackle inconsiderate drivers, particularly those who leave their cars on pavements and grass verges. The council said that it was responding to complaints about bad parking which could put children’s safety at risk and that anyone who persisted in driving and parking on pavements and verges around schools could receive fines.
The campaign group trying to save Brighton Hippodrome is holding a public meeting tomorrow (Saturday). Our Brighton Hippodrome has organized the meeting for 11am in the Greene Room, upstairs at The Cricketers pub in Black Lion Street, Brighton. The plan is to update locals on the current state of play and the council’s position and bring the community together to work towards the ultimate goal of buying the Hippodrome, car park and Hippodrome House.

Hate crime vigil
Brighton and Hove City Council has agreed to repair the Rotunda Café public toilets in Preston Park after more than 1,500 people signed a petition urging the authority to act. Back in July, Conservative candidate Lee Wares teamed up with café owner Francis Incorvaja to raise the issue, handing the petition to councillors. Now the council has authorised the repairs and redecorations, which will cost around £11,000.
The potential redevelopment of the King Alfred Centre site is the perfect opportunity to build a 50m swimming pool in Hove, according to the MP for Hove and Portslade. Mike Weatherley has backed an online petition calling for a 50m pool in Hove and it has attracted more than 1,400 signatures including Olympic diver Chris Mears and swimming champion Karen Pickering MBE. It was due to be presented it to Brighton and Hove City Council yesterday (Thursday).
An anti-hate crime vigil took place in Brighton’s Old Steine last weekend - backed by a local Labour Parliamentary hopeful. Purna Sen was among the crowds who attended the event and the Brighton Pavilion candidate said: “The struggle against prejudice and hate crime must continue. “Even in our city, sometimes spoken of as the LGBT capital of the country, crimes and harm continue to blight our community. “The struggle against prejudice and hate crime must continue.”

Brighton Fashion Week 2014 kicked off with the FAB Networking event and Industry Networking held at the Funfair Club on Brighton seafront with an aim of gathering both local and international ‘supporters of the independent fashion world.’ The fifth annual Brighton Fashion Week not only showcased unconventional creativity, but for the first time, showcased The Sustain Debate sponsored by Brighton and Hove Fair Trade and The Fair Shop. Located on the docks at Newhaven harbour, the works serves 50,000 people in the area. Wayne said he is proud to follow in his father’s footsteps and that running the site is more than just a job to him. He said: “I remember when I was a kid and dad would pop into the site on the way back from the shops to check or fix something. My mum used to say that he looked after the works better than their house. “It’s dad’s legacy really and it’s nice to know that the works was his for so long. “I surf locally in the bay here, where the treated wastewater from the site goes, so I feel a responsibility to help keep the water clean. “Newhaven is a working port so
there are lots of other factors at play but all the other surfers know me and what I do for a living and I’m proud of that.” Malcolm is enjoying retirement and, having finally caught up on the DIY at home, is now focused on getting his 1957 BSA motorbike on the road. Malcolm said: “I do miss working here but I pop in to see Wayne and the guys every so often. “I’m very proud of Wayne. He is a hard worker who listens to advice and takes it in. I do wish I had passed on a few more of my gardening tips to him though.” The treatment works was opened in 2001, replacing a smaller site adjacent to it. Over the years, Southern Water has made various improvements to the works including a recent £2.5 million refit of its screens which remove more than five tons of debris like wet wipes coming through the sewers every two weeks - around three times as much compared with 20 years ago.

A local tale of highwaymen, gibbets, and the poet laureate Graham Chainey
Edward Howell was a tailor by trade, by nature a crook and a thug. He had recently burnt down the pub at Jevington, near Eastbourne, in revenge for the brush-off he received from the landlord’s sister. James Rooke was his impressionable young sidekick, keen to gain kudos from some grown-up criminal activity. Riding stolen horses, the two lay in wait, one wet October evening in 1792, for the Steyning to Brighton mail. Their original aim had been to rob a wealthy farmer who they had heard would be carrying a large sum of money, but the farmer had stayed home because of the weather. Here instead, trundling through Goldstone Bottom, two miles from Brighton, was the stagecoach, and here behind it came the postboy, John Stephenson, his horse laden with mailbags. They brandished their pistols.
The next scene is in the Red Lion at Shoreham. That remarkable old Brighton character, Phoebe Hessell, former cross-dressing soldier, twice widowed and now nearly 80, used to travel around on a donkey, selling fish and vegetables. She happened to be in the bar and overheard Rooke boasting of his exploit. She reported the matter to Roberts the constable, who arrested the wanted men. Taken before Justice Shelley, they were committed to Horsham gaol. According to a press report, “the bags were found in their possession but the letters were destroyed. The criminals are old offenders, and well known at Shoreham.” The law was implacable, savage. Next March, at East Grinstead assizes, the two were sentenced to death. And the scene reverts to Goldstone Bottom. Here, “at Peter Dean Lane, the spot where they committed the robbery”, Howell, aged 40, and Rooke, 24, were hanged on April 6, 1793, before a large crowd, and then their bodies were tarred and chained into iron gibbets, and
left to rot. And now a new person enters the story, Rooke’s aged mother. “When the elements had caused the clothes and flesh to decay, night after night, in all weathers, and the more tempestuous the weather the more frequent the visits, she made a sacred pilgrimage to the lonely spot on the downs, and it was noticed on her return she always brought something away with her in her apron.” Bone by fallen bone, she retrieved the remains of her son, and later interred them secretly in Old Shoreham churchyard. Finally we wind on to 1880, to the Isle of Wight, where Mary Brotherton, friend and neighbour of the poet laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson, “told him the story one day at Farringford, knowing it would touch him”. It touched him so much he borrowed the “little penny magazine” she had read it in. “Many months after, he took me up to his library, after a walk, and read me what he called ‘Bones’.” His poem was later published as “Rizpah” – the title referring to the Old Testament
Lord Alfred Tennyson
character, a concubine of Saul, who watched over the hanged bodies of her sons, to prevent them being devoured by beasts of prey (2 Samuel 21). Tennyson’s poem is a dramatic monologue, spoken by the hanged boy’s dying mother. She hears him calling, but cannot go tonight, she says, as the moonlit downs are “bright as day”. She only went in the dark, “led by the creak of the chain”. She is bitter

with the black-hearted lawyers who hanged him. She excuses his crime: his wild mates “swore that he dare not rob the mail, and he swore that he would”. Hell is not for him, but for the lawyers. She hears him calling her, this last time, “from the church and not from the gibbet”. Graham Chainey is a freelance writer living in Brighton and Hove.
Auto Enrolment – Are you burying your head in the sand? Auto Enrolment and pension reforms affect every single employer in the UK, including SME’s. If you are due to stage in the next 12 months, don’t leave it too late to start planning…. It’s been nearly two years since the Government introduced workplace pension reforms. This requires employers to automatically enrol eligible employees into a workplace pension scheme. Stealth cuts hit city pensioners Paul Philo
The coalition government tries to portray itself as the friend of pensioners. The Guardian‘s 2014 budget headline was "Vote Blue, Go Grey", when tax-free savings incentives for affluent pensioners were proposed. At the 2010 general election, the prime minister pledged to protect pensioner benefits. The reality, however, is somewhat different for all but the richest pensioners. Based on national averages, one in four pensioners in Brighton and Hove is living in poverty. We have high concentrations of pensioners in certain parts of the city whose votes may be crucial in their wards and constituencies. Hidden changes are increasing poverty for our pensioners. In a recent report by Landman Economics to the TUC, it was shown that £6.38 billion is in the process of being cut from pensioner’s incomes across the UK. In terms of GDP per capita, we already have the lowest state pension in Europe. Yet existing and future cuts threaten to make it worse. Unless we can stop it.
A large proportion of the hidden cuts are because the government in June 2010 changed the way pensions are increased. The system is that pensioners annually receive the highest percentage of either the increase in the wages index or a cost-of-living index. The government has changed the costof-living index from the higher Retail Price Index (RPI) to the lower Consumer Price Index (CPI). According to pensions experts, this will cost the individual pensioner thousands of pounds over the years. The biggest ongoing stealth cut, however, is the reduction in the value of Pension Credit, which by 2016/17 will cost pensioner families £3.85 billion by 2016/17. Pension Credit is the means-tested top-up to the basic pension. The inadequacy of the state pension is shown by the fact that the half of all pensioners - five million people - have to have that credit in order to lift them out of poverty; sadly, a third of them do not claim. Other recent cuts to pensioners are the £138 million annual reduction in attendance allowance and a £340 million cut in disability benefits. This may be bad. But the worst is yet to come.
Under the current system, families where one person is above state pension age and their partner is out of work can claim Pension Credit. Under the new system of Universal Credit starting next year, such a family will not be able to claim Pension Credit but will have to rely upon less generous working-age benefits and will be subject to the government’s benefits sanctions regime. We can expect more families being driven into poverty. At the General Election Hustings Meeting at The Brighthelm Centre at 6.30pm on Thursday, October 30, questions the audience could consider asking parliamentary candidates (Green, Conservative, Labour) could include: ■ Will your party take measures to ensure the state pension does not lose value, but instead increases to a more normal liveable European level, which is above the poverty line and therefore does not need welfare top-ups? ■ Will your party if elected continue to implement Universal Credit? Pensioners will not be fooled by stealth cuts. Neither will they stand for cuts in their bus passes, winter fuel allowance, free TV
licence, or prescriptions. Parties that ignore pensioners’ anger at these cuts do so at their peril, because they are more inclined to vote than any other age-group.
Paul Philo is a member of the National Pensioners Convention in Brighton and Hove.

STOP-OBER As October draws to an end it feels like the long overdue autumn weather is now well and truly here. October for me always feels very much like a transitional month. The nights are drawing in, the clocks go back and children young and older are settled back into a new academic year be it at school or far away at University. It is interesting that the NHS chooses October as the month in which to run it’s annual campaign Stop-tober. Stop-ober primarily encourages us to quit smoking. However it is easy to use the basic theory to try and give up other bad habits you’d like to quit. If you are like me then working on improving my eating habits and getting more exercise is pretty much an on going goal that I need to think about beyond a 28 day period. But as a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator working with couples trying to break old habits I find the theory underpinning the trend for month long campaigns interesting. When a couple parts those who chose the
collaborative route do so because they want the best parting possible. If they have children then they use the mediation process to help them set new goals for their families’ future. With my support essentially they are trying to give up many of the bad habits that took hold when they were together. We set goals and try to establish some good habits that will help them parent the best they can, even though they are no longer together. Unlike health promotion campaigns their commitment has to last way beyond 28 days and this can be hard. However the basic theory remains; when the going gets tough, you have to remind yourself why you want to stick at it, and have some ways of knowing how and when not to give up. Like many regimes for getting healthy these five basic rules can be helpful. Set small goals - You’re not going to change old patterns overnight or let go of past resentments so break your goals into small, achievable ones.
Value the experience - Remember it’s never too late to change. You’ve been through the good times and bad; life experience is valuable in knowing how to remain focussed. Learn from mistakes - Instead of dwelling on mistakes, use past regrets to teach you how to change the situation. What could be done differently – try and see your ideas from a different perspective. Take some space -When it all gets too much ….take some space, it will help you re-focus. Away from the situation, you’ll be able to see things from a different perspective. Earn your goals - Wanting change is not enough, you have to earn it. And once you do, you’ll have the knowledge that you both worked hard to get there.

¨ Give a dog a home
Br ighton & Hove
Independent
Boston the Staffordshire bull terrier Ever the community newspaper, Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. Each week the newspaper will feature a different dog currently awaiting a new home. This week is Boston...
About Boston: "He came to us as a stray so we have no background information, but we know for sure that he is a lovely boy with the temperament of a true gentleman! "Boston loves the company of people, being friendly and affectionate with both people he knows and with strangers. "He is very good with dogs too, he greets them nicely and enjoys running around and playing. "He also has excellent manners, knows sit, down, both paws plus he walks beautifully on the lead. "Boston is looking for a home where owners have the time to teach him that it’s ok to be left alone for short periods. "He would be happy to live with children over 12 years old and could live with another dog. We don’t know how he feels about cats or other animals but would be happy to find out."
Can you offer Boston a home? If you can, call the Rehoming Centre on 01273 452576. Information on all animals in need of a new home is online at: www.dogstrust.org.uk.
Pets and fireworks: Making sure fireworks go with a bang not a whimper Michelle Westlake RVN
With firework season upon us, veterinary nurse Michelle Westlake offers practical tips to help keep your pet calm and safe. Every autumn-worried owners call us with questions about their pets and fireworks. Obviously all animals should be kept inside and away from fire, smoke and flashes but the noise is harder to avoid. Most animals are wary of loud bangs but for some dogs this can develop into a real phobia. However, there are many steps you can take as an owner to help your dog through this stressful time. It is important firstly to recognise the signs of stress that can include subtle signs as well as hiding and shaking. Other signs might include yawning, restlessness, whining, barking, being clingy or seeking attention and even pooing indoors. Some practical tips to help them include: ■ Try to keep everything as normal as possible, drawing attention to the noise or making a big fuss of your dog will reinforce the fear and
make the situation worse. ■ If your dog likes to hide let them do so provided it is in a safe place. If your dog is in a safe hiding place leave them be, going to them will reinforce the fear (you are hiding too). ■ Close the curtains and have lights on, turn on the TV or radio to distract from the noise. ■ If your dog is showing signs of stress do not fuss them, this can reinforce their fear by providing a reward, keep as normal as possible. ■ Distract them with their favourite toys or a food filled toy. There are several products available which may help reduce anxiety and can be very helpful during this time. These include natural pheromone products that increase the feeling of security reducing anxiety and stress. Pheromones are molecules that dogs sense by smell though don’t worry you won’t smell any extra doggy smells. Some dogs with really bad reactions to fireworks may require prescription medication to reduce anxiety. This needs to be administered before fireworks start. Prescription medication can only be prescribed by a

Outstanding vets for you and your pets veterinary surgeon, so if you feel your dog requires such medication get an appointment organised with your vet in good time. Unfortunately the fear of fireworks often gets worse unless you take action. There are specially designed methods to gradually desensitise your pet to fireworks though you should speak to your vet prior to commencing such a programme to ensure this is the best course of action for your dog. It’s too late to use desensitisation for this year but if your pet is really scared why not discuss this with you vet so you can be ready for 2015? Tips on writing the winning pitch Business coach Rob Da Costa led a recent Brighton Chamber bite-sized learning session on ensuring that you win your pitch. Here he shares his top tips: As a coach and previously, a marketer, I have both sat through and presented my fair share of pitches. What amazes me is that many companies who pitch make the pitch about them rather than the client they are presenting to! To close any business deal we need to first build credibility and then trust. In a pitch we do this by showing we understand the client’s market place, their offering and then propose a sensible yet creative solution. Only then should we start talking about us, how great we are and who else we have worked for. So here are my top 10 tips for writing and delivering the winning pitch presentation: 1. Read the brief carefully and don’t be afraid to go back to the client and ask questions. 2.Remember business is about people – so make sure your personality comes through and be passionate. 3.Use the right language and lose the jargon – you are not impressing anyone with a load of technical jargon! Instead use plain English and impress by showing you understand the client, their market and their challenges. 4.First impressions count – look the part. Dress to match the culture and style of their business. Be organised and calm.
5.Use examples of your success. 6.Talk up your unique selling points - These are your strengths and where you add value above the competition. 7. Anticipate common questions and prepare your answers. 8. Avoid answering the “can you give us a ball park figure on costings?” - My advice here is not to reveal your day rate or how much you think things will cost during a pitch. Simply say you'll prepare a proposal with costings based on the outcome of the pitch. 9.Practise, Practise & Practise some more. 10.Get far away before discussing how the pitch went - don't be tempted to discuss the pitch until you're some distance away and out of earshot. So there are my top tips that if followed, will give you a greater chance to connect with the client and win the business. Happy pitching!

On this day: Dip into Brighto The history of Brighton and Hove is so rich and diverse it could fill a thousand pages. But what if the key moments were captured, in bite-sized chunks, in a dippable book? They are now. Brighton & Hove On This Day revisits memorable moments from the two towns’ fascinating history to produce a Brighton and Hove diary – with entries for each date of the year. “I found that some history books were quite heavy going,” explained author Dan Tester. “As interesting as they are, they can witter on a bit! “I wanted to write a book that covered as much of Brighton and Hove’s history as possible, but in the fewest words. The idea is that the reader will be enthused and encouraged to learn more about this amazing place and I’m hoping the library’s reference section will be inundated with visitors!” The book begins with Sir Jack Hobbs’ Test cricket debut for England on New Year’s Day 1908, and weaves its way through the weird and wonderful fabric that paints the story of Brighton and Hove to arrive at New Year’s Eve
with three entries featuring; a world champion boxer (1826), the death of a Brighton Tigers’ legend (1974) and, perhaps unsurprisingly, the mother of all parties in 1999! A copywriter by trade, Dan also organises, and DJs at, club nights in and around Brighton and Hove and co-hosts the Family Funktunes show on Radio Reverb. It’s his fourth book; The Random Book of… Michael sandwiched two editions of Brighton & Hove Albion On This Day. “After finishing the first version of my Albion book I thought the format could transfer really well to towns and cities. To be honest, there is loads of material I left out as there simply wasn’t enough room. There is so much collateral it was hard leaving some stuff out. It’s taken me three years to get it finished! “I moved to Brighton from Cuckfield when I was six months old and, apart from two years in Wales, and time in London and Hertfordshire, I’ve lived here all my life. I’m fiercely proud of the place, and everything that makes it what it is.” A cultural melting pot, the city has attracted creative types, adventurous types, tolerant types, studious types and downright odd types for hundreds of years. Since the Prince Regent decided to build the Royal Pavilion in the 1800s, Brighton and Hove has become synonymous with creativity, music, hedonism, freedom and, most importantly, tolerance. Brighton & Hove On This Day uncovers hundreds of nefarious, salacious, humorous, ridiculous, statistical, whimsical and historical things you never knew you needed to know about the nation’s favourite seaside resort. It’s a triumph.

The West Pier closed. Possibly one of the town’s biggest-ever failings, a public inquiry was then held into the 109-year-old pier’s future in 1971, but when the council’s policy committee recommended that demolition should not be opposed in December 1974, a strong protest group led by John Lloyd conducted a long campaign which, armed with a 5,000-signature petition, persuaded the council at least to postpone a decision on the pier.

Unfortunately, Brighton has long been referred to as ‘London by the sea’ (not in my house). On this day, The Times featured a story on Brighton Statistics: “The town of Brighton is drawn up facing the sea, like a regiment of soldiers; the picked company of tall fellows on the flanks, the best men front… the shabby little slouching dogs at the rear. Or, as we all know Brighton is an offset of London, imagine the town-houses to have set off racing down to the shore of Sussex… the Albion Hotel… standing foremost of all, with its toes in the water… just so is Brighton ranged, staring with all its best at the water. In the rear, all is secondary and shabby… The grenadier company is Brunswick-terrace, occupying the right flank; while the left is Kemp-town, a skeleton detachment lost in the clouds…” [All sic].
The first telegraphic message from Brighton to London was sent by the Electric and International Telegraph Company from Brighton Station. Less than a month later, they opened the first telegraph office at the Royal York Hotel and a rival service was also offered by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Company with a system which linked their stations. By 1880 there were 11 telegraph offices in Brighton, plus the railway stations, and nearly half a million messages were handled. Other branch offices opened at Western Road, Hove, in June 1885, College Road in August 1888, and Cannon Place in June 1891, replacing the West Pier office. Palace Pier (Photograph: Brett Mendoza)

One of the country’s most prolific hangmen, James ‘Jemmy’ Botting, died on the corner of Codrington Place and Montpelier Road in Brighton. He was the executioner at Newgate Prison in London from 1817 to 1819 and claimed to have despatched 175 men and women during his time as a terminator. An exponent of the short drop – just a couple of feet which would prolong the criminal’s agony as they ‘danced’ at the end of the rope – Botting’s executions were predominantly undertaken in public, sometimes in front of 100,000 ‘spectators’. In his later years, Botting became partially paralysed and this forced him into retirement on a state pension and the occasional free drink in pubs when he told gruesome stories. Many Brightonians refused to be associated with him and legend has it that he fell out of his wheelchair and no-one came to his aid, thus leaving him to die.
Outdoors • Install a water butt to collect rainwater for your garden • Use mulches, compost or chipbark to retain soil moisture
Indoors • Use a watering can to water your plants • Use a bucket and sponge to wash the car, not a water-wasting hose
• Fit aerators to taps and cut the water they use by half • Boil only the amount of water you need for a hot drink

An Ode to Brighton by Dan Tester I’ve seen a six-foot-four transvestite driving a bus Her passengers smile, make no fuss, I’ve seen cyclists, thousands, with their bits hanging free Dancing on the pebbles, with Fatboy, no fee.
To celebrate the BT speaking clock reaching its 70th year, a competition was launched to find the new voice. Applicants were invited to leave telephone recordings of their dulcet tones, with the proceeds of each call going to Children in Need. Brighton and Hove resident Sara Mendes da Costa, a telemarketer and part-time voiceover artist, was announced as the winner on BBC One’s Children in Need three weeks later.
I’ve seen marches; no fox hunting, no war, I want to wear a dress Save the Albion, the whale, our beloved NHS, I’ve seen stags, hens, lads, and cads West Street at closing, and the ubiquity of fads.
2006
The Beatles – in front of 4,000 screaming fans – topped the bill at The Hippodrome in Middle Street, Brighton. The Brighton & Hove Herald said; “…On Sunday, the experienced walls of The Hippodrome were almost shattered by the Big Scream, when thousands of teenage, and sub-teenage, girls reached the peak of Beatles worship… At first, there were more white-helmeted policemen and magpie-uniformed St John Ambulance officials than fans… the curtain rises… for the next 30 minutes bedlam is let loose… The noise is only just endurable… It’s like hearing a Beatles record played over a solitary loudspeaker during a football match, acclaimed mostly by women.” The venue opened in 1897 as the Brighton Ice Rink but was enlarged and converted into a circus and theatre by 1901. The Hippodrome became the town’s principal variety theatre, was enlarged again in 1939, closed as a theatre in 1965 and, after a brief spell as a television film studio, became the Mecca Bingo Club in 1967. Designated a Grade II listed building in 1985, the building is vacant.

Over 1,000 Albion fans marched from Brighton Station, via Western Road, Church Road and up George Street, to the Goldstone Ground in a peaceful demonstration against Bill Archer, Greg Stanley and David Bellotti. The latter was forced from his seat after a firework was thrown during the Third Division 0-0 draw with Fulham.

I’ve seen flares swing and skinny jeans chafe Winklepickers clop and platforms, unsafe, I’ve seen glow sticks, white gloves, freaky dancing The goths, mods, chavs and whatever’s in. I’ve seen record shops depart, and hairdressers arrive Nightclubs close, and students skive, I’ve seen beer, and house, prices skyrocket Weekenders invade, leaving happily out of pocket. I’ve seen gays and lesbians liberated in the park Countless walks of shame long after dark, I’ve seen our town, not city, a cultural icon Forever in my heart, I love you Brighton.

‘The maker of modern Brighton’, Sir Herbert Carden, was made an honorary freeman of the borough. Serving on the council, he was responsible for Patcham’s incorporation into the borough of Brighton – hence the two ‘pylons that straddle the A23 marking the northern border – and was hugely influential in the town embracing telephone and tramway systems, and road widening. He purchased large swathes of downland – which he resold to the corporation for the same amount to defeat unfair pricing – to protect water supplies and to provide recreational facilities for the towns’ inhabitants. Knighted in 1930 – he died 11 years later, aged 74 or 75 (his exact date of birth is unknown) – not all of his ideas were greeted with complete enthusiasm! He advocated the rebuilding of the entire seafront from Kemp Town to Hove, in 1930s Embassy Court style, and the demolition of the Royal Pavilion!
Miss Southern Belle was transmitted on ITV in the Brighton and Hove area. Two months earlier saw a plea for more young ladies to enter the Miss Brighton competition. As an incentive, potential entrants were informed that first prize was ‘£20 cash’. Other carrots included a pair of shoes, a swimsuit of their choice, and a haircut for their appearance on television. Jackie Peterson won and went on to ‘represent’ the town at the Miss Southern Belle competition.

This week’s must-see Richard Herring - Lord of the Dance Settee, The Old Market, Upper Market Street, Hove Tonight (Friday) 7.30pm. Richard Herring is on stage at The Old Market this evening in a show which promises to be one of this year’s Brighton Comedy Festival’s very best. One of British comedy’s unsung heroes, Herring initially shot to relative fame as half of the criticallyacclaimed Lee and Herring double act alongside Stewart Lee. Since then he has celebrated and modernised the idea of concept-led stand-up, not least in his hugely popular show Hitler Moustache in which he attempted to reclaim the toothbrush tache from Hitler in the name of comedy, arguing for its association with Charlie Chaplin and using that starting point as a way of attacking both extreme politics and voter apathy when faced with it.
Subsequent shows like Christ on a Bike have continue to propel Herring to the higher echelons of thinking man’s stand-up and his latest show, Lord of the Dance Settee is his 11th stand-up show in 11 years. It finds Herring in a frivolous mood and explores how his career is a failed attempt to top a piece of visual slapstick comedy he came up with at 16. Tickets, £12 available in person from the venue, by calling 01273 201 801 or online at: www.theoldmarket.com.

Online versus ‘traditional’ estate agents Following the recent TV programme on online agents (presented by Sarah Beeny who has run an online property agency as well as a dating agency for several years now) has raised the profile again of the online alternative to the ‘high street’ agent. For years, the low price alternative (sell your house for £395 plus VAT) has excited the interest of people who think it will save them a chunk of cash. So, the routine has been: ask 2 or 3 agents around to your house, get a sense of its value, then go to the online agent, ask them to take it on, pay your fee and wait for the buyers to flood in. Will the online agent call them or email them? Will the online agent arrange the viewing and show them over your property? Will the online agent negotiate the best price for you? Will the online agent recommend trusted solicitors to act in your best interest to get the sale through? Will they recommend a property for you to buy, or a surveyor to advise on it, or a builder to look over it for you, or an electrician, or a damp proof specialist? The list of things a good agent will do for you and a buyer goes on and on, and at no extra charge beyond
the fee already agreed at the outset and not payable till the sale completes. You think using an online agent could save you thousands of pounds...on what final figure though? Suppose you misprice and undersell by anything from £5-50,000. Who will negotiate the price and give you sound advice, acting for you to ensure you get that best price? When people go on the market to sell, timescale is important. They need someone they can trust to discuss the vagaries of the local market; who is out there looking now; what part of the market are they not connecting to that they could. When you launch a property onto the market, it’s the beginning of a regular conversation with your agent: It will have a description, photographs and so on. Wouldn’t it be good to have a third party input into that? A couple of weeks and more down the line, wouldn’t you like to know there is a team of people still trying to sell your house (as they are not paid till you move out and it completes, unlike the online agent); looking at the description, discussing it with you and between themselves, coming to take different photographs perhaps, tweaking it to improve
its appeal? Of course, online, hopefully you will find a buyer. Then what? Who will negotiate and advise on what offer to accept and reject? Who will check your buyer’s position? Are they on the market, selling, sold, in a hurry or not...so many variables. Who will recommend the best solicitors, discuss fixtures and fittings, arrange further visits by the buyer, their surveyor, valuer, damp proof specialist and other trades? Who will deal with the inevitable hassles over value, repairs recommended and so on? The list goes on...this is the high street agent’s bread and butter. There is a place for the online agent and the demise of any high street agent will come down to service compared to other high street agents. So, do shop around as no two agents are the same. Interestingly, it is widely rumoured in the industry press that Sarah was using Savills to sell her home in Yorkshire, not her online company. That may tell a story. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. The places I eat
Trying to change opinions of convenience food Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
Sweet Umami are a Hastings-based start-up with a view to change your perception of delivered meals, convenience food and takeaways. Serving 'feel good food', without high levels of sugar or salt and a strong focus on a plentiful fruit and vegetable content, Sweet Unami are looking to revolutionise the Sussex home-delivery service. The premise is simple: select a meal plan, place an order and have fresh, nutritious food delivered to your door. Choose from a full day of meals or lunch/dinner only. Each delivery is made between 5-7am and stored in a black, branded chiller bag. Not going to be home or don't fancy getting up that early? The produce will keep cool and fresh for up to 12 hours. Unpacking my Sweet Unami delivery was exciting in its own right: unzipping the bag to find tubs, wraps and personalised menus. It was like Christmas had come early. The food is colour coded so you know that everything with a green dot is
Coffee Chronicles Cakes and coffee shops are inextricably linked, but coffee shops are not always renowned for having particularly good cakes. The big boy chains offer massproduced and preservative-laden frozen goodies with a nice long shelf life, very little flavour and even less imagination.
dinner, yellow is lunch and so on. This morning I was greeted by a robust tub of Plum and Hazelnut Wild Rice Bircher. Smooth and creamy, without being at all rich, the bircher (or muesli) was an interesting way to start the day. Wild rice made for a challenging substitute for oats, but once I'd gotten over the fact I was eating rice for breakfast and drizzled my tub in sweet plum juice, I began to enjoy myself more. Not necessarily something I'd choose to eat, but filling and a change from the norm. About 11am I found myself peckish. Luckily, the Sweet Unami meal plan comes with two snacks. The first being a Bean and Artichoke Dip - artichoke hearts, cannelloni beans, broad beans, peas with Three Seed Crackers - ground almonds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and chia seeds. Both components were absolutely delicious. The thick, crumbly crackers tasted so free of any chemicals or nasties and were soft yet retained a slight bite. Dipped in the fresh, subtly flavoured artichoke dip, this was a terrific mid-morning snack and cured any stomach rumblings until beyond 1pm.
by @LittleCoffeeCo Bakeries lead the way, but independent coffee shops are giving them a fair run for their money. After all, what use is a good cake if you can't get a decent coffee too? Independents hold the key to the door of imagination and innovation, as we aren't bound
Lunchtime and the Chipotle Sweet Potato Salad - sweet potato, tomato, quinoa, soy beans, baby spinach, watercress, rocket, pea shoots, chipotle, harissa and dressing - was the highlight of my day’s meal plan. Served in a rectangular container, the balance of cool watercress, peppery rocket and soy beans was simply beautiful against the harissa topped roasted tomatoes. Sprinkled with quinoa and scattered with rounds of soft sweet potato, the salad box was finished with a smokey chipotle flavour and a drizzle of mild chilli laced dressing. If only all salad lunch boxes could be this good. Second snack of the day: Super Green Juice - apples, pineapple, cucumber, avocado, lime, wheatgrass, spirulina and acidophilus. Thin without being at all watery, the juice was easily drinkable and gulped down with gusto. I could almost feel the health washing through my body. An excellent blend of fruit and vegetables. Around 7pm, I found myself looking toward my menu and set about preparing dinner. Pulled Pork with BBQ Sauce, Celariac Slaw, Boston Beans and Corn on the Cob. by the shackles of 500 stores to blast with promo material before launching something new. Independents spin a better yarn than the chains too - locally sourced produce and all that. Given that we all know there are no chocolate trees in Sussex, we assume this means their locally sourced ingredients are from Asda at the marina. At our place, you'll find handmade cakes which actually taste of the ingredients they purport to contain. We only make

Chipoltle Sweet Potato Salad
The homemade pulled pork was wonderfully tender, slightly spiced and the chunks of pig complimented the smokey BBQ sauce well. The celeriac,in thin spaghetti like strands, added a much-needed crunch to the plate. The corn on the cob with lime butter I nibbled intermittently, but having not warmed it through enough was a big mistake. My Sweet Unami delivery packed in a whopping nine portions of fruit and vegetables making this the ideal delivery for those recovering from health issues, pregnancy or similar, as well as a relatively affordable option for those with jobs that keep them away from the kitchen. I'd wholeheartedly recommend Sweet Unami as a 'gourmet meal to go' service, keep them in mind for when life gets too hectic or you are supporting those in need. Instead of offering every cake, muffin and cookie imaginable, we are the masters of two - flapjacks and brownies. We won't be blending the two to make a flapnie or a browjack any time soon though, as we believe in letting Starbucks do their own research and development. Anyone fancy a Duffin? Tibbons knows how to speak his mind. Increasingly he uses words for this job (“No!” and “More” being two favourites, though strangely never together) but he also has the art of speaking whole sentences without ever uttering a word well and truly mastered. When you think about, I guess he’s had most of his life to practice, given that vocabulary is a relatively new thing for him. Still, I think he employs his skills to awesome effect. Just this morning I forgot myself and pushed the bathroom door to while I was in there. Moments later, said door swung open and I was met with an impish grin that said: “Now mummy, you know we don’t shut this door, I’ll let you off this once because you’re usually very good, but don’t do it again.” I tried doing the same back but that just sparked a case of the giggles. Then there’s the pout that appears, along with his bottom teeth, as soon as Tibbons has sensed that some parental transgression is about to take place. You know the sort of thing, insisting that he doesn’t run out into the path of an oncoming car, firmly requesting that he return the teaspoon to the table or the toy to the shelf rather than embarking on a life of petty crime. Typical overbearing, unreasonable parenting, says Tibbons’ protruding bottom lip. My personal favourite though is the eye twinkle that little glimmer of light that appears in his baby blues when he thinks he’s being cheeky or funny - like when he removes the seat cushion from his potty and wraps it round his neck then tells you it’s his beard or when he creeps up behind you as you sit innocently watching TV and roars at you like a tiger. I might give that one a try too!

Match preview: Brighton and Hove Albion v Rotherham
Strikers need to start ‘‘ scoring for Seagulls
Albion statistics:
Albion’s manager
League position:
(Speaking after Huddersfield game)
It’s one point again. We’d rather go home with the three points but what happened was the same as has happened many times this season. “We conceded early and we had to chase the game. "That is never a very good starting point. We are making it more difficult for ourselves – but we got back to 1-1 at half time. “I thought that we’d continue from where we left off in the first half, but somehow we couldn’t get our game going in the second. “I believe the squad has what it takes to turn the corner and go on a long run. "We’ll see what happens, we’ll keep the faith, keep positive and I’m sure the results will come.”
Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion The pressure is mounting on Brighton and Hove Albion’s strike-force after the Seagulls were once again rescued by a goal from a defender. Lewis Dunk’s fifth goal - his fourth in the Championship salvaged a point in the midweek game with Huddersfield and was the seventh scored by a defender in the league this season out of Albion’s total of 12. Gordon Greer has two, while Bruno has one. That means 58% of Albion’s league goals have come from the back four. Of the squad’s strikers, only Craig Mackail-Smith has found the net in the league, with Chris O’Grady, Sam Baldock and Adrian Colunga yet to open their Championship accounts for the Seagulls. Mackail-Smith looks likely to miss tomorrow’s home game with Rotherham, meaning Baldock will almost certainly lead the line against a defence which has leaked 17 goals in 13 games. Rotherham have also struggled to find a regular goal-getter, with four players locked together on two goals. That group includes former Albion striker Alex Revell who has found the net in both his team’s last two games. Revell, who was popular among sections of the thenWithdean crowd due to his impressive work rate, will represent a different sort of challenge for Greer and Dunk than the strikers they have faced

so far this season. His likely partner, Jonson Clarke-Harris, has also scored in the last two outings - a home win over Leeds United and an exciting 3-3 draw with Fulham - meaning the Seagulls face a forward line bang on form. Joe Bennett should return at left-back for Brighton after missing the Huddersfield game with a slight problem while Sami Hyypiä will hope Bruno recovers from his latest injury to provide Inigo Calderon with competition at right-back. The Seagulls had to make do without either first choice fullback at Huddersfield. Joao Teixeira was another who sat out the midweek match after being taken off in the first half of last weekend’s home defeat
by Middlesbrough and, with Kazenga Lua Lua suspended tomorrow following his midweek red card, much of the Albion’s creative hopes rest on Teixeira’s recovery. If he plays, the Portuguese playmaker could prove key. Elsewhere, flair-hungry fans will again hope to see the mercurial Paddy McCourt given an extended run-out. The Northern Ireland international played an hour against Middlesbrough but was an unused sub at Huddersfield. Whatever the starting line-up, Brighton fans will expect to see an improved performance from the team’s last home outing which ended in a disappointing display and a fifth defeat of the campaign.

Sami Hyypiä has not ruled out the possibility of adding to his current Seagulls squad if results do not begin to improve. The Albion find themselves mired in a run of nine league matches without a win and are perched precariously just one point above the dreaded Championship drop-zone. If results go against the Seagulls this weekend, they could find themselves in the bottom three and more than a dozen points adrift of the coveted play-off places. It is certainly not yet time for supporters to panic and a morale-boosting win over Rotherham could work wonders for the mood around the Amex. The manager, however, appreciates vast improvement is needed to balance out what has been a disappointing start
With Kazenga Lua Lua suspended for tomorrow’s match, Brighton fans will be hoping João Teixeira recovers from the head injury he sustained against Middlesbrough. The Portuguese playmaker sparkled in the first few games of his loan spell from Premier League Liverpool and could provide the creative spark the Seagulls so desperately need.

to life at the Albion helm. Speaking to BBC Sport in the aftermath of the team’s midweek draw with Huddersfield, Hyypiä said he remained confident his charges can turn things round but added the club would look for reinforcements if need be. He said: “I am sure that results will come. If not with this XI then we need to find some recruits. "If we need to we will bring [players in]. If we turn the corner with this squad then we won't, maybe." Hyypiä has been unfortunate in his opening weeks as Brighton manager. The club sold leading scorer and talisman Leo Ulloa to Premier League Leicester City for around £8 million and exciting - if inconsistent attacker Will Buckley to former boss Gus Poyet at Sunderland. The club cannot be blamed for cashing in on both players - particularly as the duo made

Straight from the commentary box It was certainly a game to look forward to. All the ingredients were there. Big clubs, star players, historic stadium. Liverpool v Real Madrid. Shame really as for once I had control of the TV clicker, 3-0 down at half-time the game was gone for The Reds. No infamous comeback in the Champions League this time around. That night was of course something special for the Merseyside club and I am sure for former defender Sami Hyypia when they won the trophy. The Albion manager brought up that game the other day as the Seagulls failed to come from behind against Middlesbrough. Sometimes football is about momentum, sometimes it’s about inspiration. Albion could do with both but at the moment
they need something special to turn things around, a goal here, a penalty there. They were close again to that elusive win on Tuesday at Huddersfield but it could have gone either way. Much has been made by some of the need for a new striker or a change of system but the Seagulls could also do with a bit of luck. Colunga’s shot tipped onto the bar, Forster-Caskey’s disallowed goal for off-side. Just one moment of magic would help and maybe then they can accumulate points and move up the table. If they need any inspirational for another team I wouldn’t pick Liverpool, I would go for another Sussex side - Burgess Hill. Ex Seagull Ian Chapman has led the Hillians to victory
it clear they wanted to try their hand in the top flight - but it is not hard to imagine the Seagulls sitting higher up the table were Ulloa still in their ranks. Sam Baldock, Adrian Colunga and Chris O’Grady have yet to find the sort of form which persuaded the Seagulls to sign them this summer but it is still early days for the players at Albion. Had any one of the trio or Craig Mackail-Smith for that matter - been scoring on a regular basis, there would almost certainly not be the same levels of criticism directed towards the others as is currently coming from sections of the Amex faithful. The obvious option for Hyypiä and head of football operations David Burke is to embark on a hunt for another frontman. Those currently firing blanks, however, will surely be afforded a few more games yet to find their feet. Follow all the action, home or away, on BBC Sussex Sport or Twitter @BBCSussexSport @johnnycburger @BHIndyAlbion in their last 15 - yes 15 - games. They are also unbeaten in all competitions this season. Oh how Sami Hyypia could do with just a dose of that form. This weekend Chapman aims for a historic victory in the FA Cup as his team head to Dartford in the fourth qualifying round. It’s a tough task in their fifth game in the competition but progress to the first round proper would represent something extraordinary. We have live commentary of both Albion and Burgess Hill this Saturday so let’s hope fans from both clubs are celebrating on Saturday night. It may not be Istanbul but I’m sure Sami Hyypia would indulge with a cold one.
