RUBBISH DEAL EDGES CLOSER Richard Morris @BrightonIndy The long-running dispute between Brighton and Hove City Council and the union representing the city’s bin lorry drivers is edging towards a resolution. Both sides met earlier this week for fresh talks, with the council tabling a new proposal to the GMB leaders on Wednesday - when it was reported the two sides were “centimetres apart”. Last night (Thursday), Mark Turner, GMB secretary, told Brighton & Hove Independent that the difference was now a matter of millimetres. He said: “We are meeting our members tomorrow (Friday) to put the council’s current proposals to them. “These proposals are millimetres away from us being able to recommend them to our members. “We are likely to conduct a ballot of our members throughout
next week regarding acceptance of the proposals or not and will deliver a decision on Thursday (November 6), as this is a very important issue for our members and obviously, the public.” The dispute between the union and the council has led to a series of strikes, leaving residents frustrated as the lack of resolution meant rubbish often went uncollected. The GMB has not yet set another strike date and is hopeful the two sides can finally reach an agreement, although all options will be discussed at the meeting today (Friday). Refuse lorry drivers want the council to recognise the additional qualifications and skill required to drive their sizeable vehicles and reward them with a pay rise. Brighton and Hove City Council, meanwhile, is struggling to balance its books amid substantial cuts in funding from central government which run into the tens of millions of pounds.

In Brighton, it sells 3,002 copies; in Hove, it sells 1,867. The sales in the city - the lowest in the newspaper's 134-year

I’ve spent the last few years enjoying politics from the sidelines. Yes, I have been an activist, but I haven’t been standing for election or trying to persuade people of my abilities and experience. I had thought those days were well behind me. After all, I had spent many happy years in my 20s and 30s as a local councillor and parliamentary candidate. But a few chance conversations in August changed my mind and made be start thinking seriously about throwing my hat in the ring. Little did I realise how this single act would impact on people’s opinions of me and their assumptions of both me and my motives. The suggestion I’ve been "parachuted" into the ward doesn’t stack up. Nor was I approached to put myself forward by some shadowy insiders. Being the only candidate at a
selection meeting doesn’t make it any less intimidating. Having to endure my speech and answers to their questions probably wasn’t easy on the Labour Party members who attended either. I simply thought that I should take the brave step of putting across Labour’s case for the future of our city directly and was willing to take responsibility for making sure that if successful those policies are put into action. In a city where recycling rates are falling under an environmentally-friendly administration, where privatisation is increasingly being suggested and used as the first line of attack on costs (rather than the last option), and where important long-term decisions are being evaded to leave for the next city administration I want to offer a better vision. Better access to housing, a focus on delivering the basic council services effectively, a new school to meet the challenges of population changes, balanced and sustainable transport policies that don’t leave residents

Brighton and Hove City Council has approved plans for an eightstorey block of flats to be built in Hove. The council’s planning committee granted permission for the scheme, which will see the Hyde Housing office in Davigdor Road, Hove, demolished. In its place will be built 68 flats and ground floor office space of around 700 square metres Forty per cent of the flats will be affordable housing.
Saltdean Lido will reopen next summer after the team behind ambitious plans to restore it to its former glories was awarded £440,000 by a government investment scheme. The iconic art deco attraction will initially reopen at weekends and during school holidays from June next year. Once the summer is over it will close again while plans are finalised for work to revamp the once-popular site. Around £9 million of funding is needed for the eventual work.
Caroline Lucas, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, has been named MP of the Year at an awards organised by LGBT publication PinkNews. The awards, now in their second year, were launched by PinkNews in order to celebrate the contributions of politicians, businesses and community groups involved in improving the lives of the LGBT community both here in the UK and overseas. Ms Lucas was among five MPs shortlisted but the Green MP came out as overall winner.

Brighton and Hove’s Christmas lights will be switched on next month. The annual event, dubbed The Brilliant Brighton Christmas Lights Switch On, will take place on Thursday, November 13 between 5pm and 7pm on East Street. The local lights are the largest of their kind on the south coast and the switch on is being sponsored by Domestic & General for the second year running. There will be live performances and some special guests.
The ever-popular sketch and satire specialist Treason Show team have found a new home. The group will now be based at the new Rialto Theatre in Dyke Road – a venue they will share with theatre company Pretty Villain. Earlier this year a fire destroyed the Treason Show’s props store. The show has previously performed at a host of local venues. The Treason Show Christmas Special will still be staged at the Dome’s Studio Theatre from December 27 until 31.

Have yourself a scary little Christmas in aid of charity Richard Morris @BrightonIndy The second annual Brighton Ghost Stories for Christmas charity fundraiser will be performed at Brighton Pavilion on Saturday, December 6, in aid of RISE, the domestic violence charity. It isn’t widely known, but the tradition of gathering round the fire at Christmas to tell ghost stories predates Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol; in fact, ghost stories were once as much a part of Christmas as the turkey and the tree is today. And, later this year, Blind Piper Productions will be reviving this tradition at Brighton Royal Pavilion with an evening of mulled cider and performances of classic ghost stories by MR James, EF Benson and Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman. The event has been sponsored by Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company and proceeds from the event will be donated to RISE, which provides help with refuge accommodation, resettlement, crisis appointments, helpline, counselling, housing, legal and financial advice, solicitors appointments, support
groups, play therapy, 1-to-1 support and training and preventative education. Craig Johnson, producer and performer, explained: “The idea behind the project is that each year we will raise money for a different local charity. “Last year we raised money for The Clocktower Sanctuary, which is a fantastic organisation supporting young homeless people in Brighton and Hove. “This year we are raising funds for RISE which does really incredible work. Domestic violence is an issue that affects many people and takes a number of forms, and I am very proud that we can do our part to raise funds and awareness for such an important organisation and cause. “I was inspired by the BBC Christmas ghost stories that used to be on television when I was a child. I remember seeing The Signalman when I was very small and it left a lasting impression on me. In more recent years I used to hold annual ghost stories for Christmas at my house, where I would serve Christmas food and drink and everyone would bring a ghost story. Everyone really enjoyed it and I
thought it would be something that could be expanded and run as a charity fundraising event. “As adults it is very rare that we are read to - we read stories to children, but it isn't often that someone reads to us. There is something very comforting about being told stories – even if the stories are in this case unnerving. “I am really excited that this year we are performing at the Brighton Royal Pavilion and support has been quite incredible.” As well as the ghost stories there will also be a prize draw included in the cost of a ticket. But, of course, it is the stories which are driving the event. Mr Johnson added: “I think the stories we have for this year’s show are fantastic and cover a very broad spectrum of the ghost story genre. "Audiences will be taken on a journey that encompasses humour, sadness, tragedy and out and out horror.” Ghost Stories for Christmas is being performed at Brighton Royal Pavilion on Saturday, December 6. The Repercussions by Catherine Hall I do so love a good diary. Yes, of course, I keep one - if only to be a smart Aleck and quote Oscar Wilde about having something sensational to read on a train. But I have a terrible weakness for books in diary form, too. They are a joy to read. Fact or fiction, it doesn’t really matter to me. There are two diaries here running concurrently: 40-yearold Jo, a war photographer who has inherited her great aunt's flat in Brighton and her great grandmother Elizabeth’s account of her life serving as a nurse in Brighton Pavilion in 1915. The story unfolds in a gentle way and is utterly charming, but we are gradually drawn in to the horrors of modern terrorism in Kabul and the
truly awful trench warfare of the First World War. Jo has many problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder and, when she arrives at her inherited flat, she is numb and in need of some rest. The discovery of Elizabeth’s diary, however, is a welcome distraction from her woes. There are some glorious descriptions of Brighton Pavilion transformed into a hospital for wounded Indian soldiers who were brought there from France, and the heartbreak that it caused Elizabeth in those unenlightened days is poignant and touching. The modern-day descriptions of the gay bars in Kemptown, the seafront, and the busy streets of Kemptown are fascinating, too. Don’t forget the old adage: Keep a diary, and one day it will keep you.

I am delighted to add my support.” And it is not just politicians backing the campaign. Alex Knutsen of UNISON, which has been working closely with the city’s chamber of commerce, has also been vocal in the union’s support. They said: "Brighton and Hove UNISON is very pleased to be working with the chamber and optimistic that in the next 12 months we will be able to double the number of businesses in the city whose staff receive the living wage. “We’d like to encourage another 20 businesses, charities, social enterprises or public sector organisations to sign up to the campaign during Living Wage Week.”

A government minister visited the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove after being invited to the venue by Graham Cox, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Hove at next year’s general election. Sajid Javid, the Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, was given a tour of the leisure centre days after Hove MP Mike Weatherley handed in a petition to Brighton and Hove City Council calling for a 50-metre swimming pool to be included in any future development.
Elaine Evans, of Reynolds Road, Hove has been awarded a British Empire Medal for her support of the Royal Pavilion & Museums. She was presented with her award by Peter Field, the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, at a ceremony at the Royal Pavilion. Ms Evans originally thought it was a hoax when she heard she had featured in the Queen’s birthday honours and it took a phone call from the Cabinet office to convince her.
A free Halloween lantern walk is taking place in Preston Park tomorrow (Saturday). Organised by the Friends of Preston Park, the free walk sets off from the men’s bowls pavilion at 6.30pm - with walkers encouraged to gather from 5.30pm. Prizes will be awarded for the scariest fancy dress and the best home-made lantern and there will be refreshments and face painting. The event is aimed at families with children up to 13 years.

The fundraising initiative has been set up by Reform Solutions, a family run courier, and the recycling scheme enables schools, colleges or workplaces to donate unwanted goods – with any funds raised from the recycling used to support AITC’s work helping disabled young people take part in sport. The project was the idea of Reform Solutions managing director Marc Richardson, who has been a committed supporter of AITC for more than five years. He said: “I wanted to do more to support this great local cause and I realised that by making use of my business, I could collect and recycle goods to raise funds. “It’s really easy, as we provide the
bags and collect them when they’re full. I hope everyone will get behind this scheme - the more bags that are donated, the more lives we can change. It’s as simple as that.” AITC’s Gary Townsend said: “We’re really grateful to Reform Solutions for supporting our disability sports programme. “This is a great way for people to raise funds without costing a penny. Supply teachers from Brighton and Hove went to Westminster on Tuesday to lobby MPs about what they see as a waste of public money and to complain about cuts in pay and conditions. Union leaders say schools are paying commercial recruitment agencies millions of pounds a year to hire supply teachers. The closure of local authority supply pools has, they argue, led to an increase in the use of agencies, which charge schools up to £1,000 per week per teacher.
A new free money advice service for residents backed by Brighton and Hove City Council has been launched. Moneyworks is designed to help the most vulnerable in the city deal with debt, manage money better, and avoid unscrupulous loan sharks. Residents can get advice on a whole range of money issues by calling the Moneyworks Advice Line on 01273 809288 between 10am and 3pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday, or 10am to 1pm on Friday.

Yoga fundraising fun A group of yoga enthusiasts have raised more than £3,000 to help children living in some of the poorest slums in India after completing a grueling 12-hour hot yogathon. The 15 fundraisers sweated it out in temperatures of 98F to raise money for OSCAR (Organisation for Social Change and Responsibility), a football and education charity, which works to improve the lives of young people living in the slum communities of Mumbai and Goa. The charity, which has a UK arm based in Brighton, runs programmes that use football to steer young people away from gambling, alcohol and drug abuse. The programmes provide classes in subjects such as English, maths and Hindi as part of the football sessions that encourage boys and girls to continue their education. Bouygues Development wants to build an ecological housing scheme on the site as well as improving public green spaces. Brighton and Hove has added its name to the ActionAid Towns Against Tax-dodging campaign after a successful Green motion to a council meeting. The anti-poverty charity has been asking councils across the UK to sign up and call on the government to do more to get large companies to pay their fair share towards quality public services. Councillor Leo Littman proposed a motion to sign-up to the campaign and it was approved by fellow councillors.

Skateboard scheme award A Brighton-based skateboarding project which encourages young women to get involved in the sport has received national recognition. The She-Shredders project was given the bronze award at the National Sportivate Project of the Year awards having previously been named as the best project in the Southeast. It beat off competition from 40 other finalists to land the bronze award. The scheme, which is a skateboarding group for young women, is a Brighton and Hove City Council sports development project run in partnership with Brighton Youth Centre. Lessons in skateboarding were set up at the start of 2013 to encourage teenage girls and young women in the city to gain confidence and develop skills in skateboarding. The She Shredders now meet weekly and are trained by UK skateboarding champion Lucy Adams. Lessons have taken place across the city’s skateparks, including Woodingdean, Hove Lagoon, Brighton Youth Centre and also out at Shoreham. Hallowe’en is traditionally associated with ghosts, ghouls, and things that go bump - although, in reality, such phenomena observe no
closed season. And the modern Americanised festival of witchhats, pumpkins, and trick-andtreat tends to trivialise what used to be a time of spiritual communion with the dead. Curiously, despite its comparatively short history, Brighton and Hove is one of the country’s most spooky cities,
second only to York (whose history goes back millennia). There are at least 200 known haunted locations, including at least 40 pubs. A twitten-flitting nun, said to have been immured after eloping with a soldier, is one of several phantoms haunting The Lanes, and terrifed a Japanese tourist in 2009. (She vanishes through a

Switching to natural products can be a very personal choice. People detox the chemical overload in their skincare a bit like health freaks cleanse their insides. You might not do it for ever, but it makes a real difference when you do bother. I quit using chemical cleaners in my home as well; I just want to feel completely comfortable. Try lemons and vinegar, if you go DIY. I tend to spray Parsley Plus from Infinity Foods and wash my cleaning cloths every now and again. Disposable wipes aren’t as green. There aren’t hard and fast rules for any of this, but it can go wrong. I have a funny experience to share. The Marks and Spencer beauty department stocks some terrific brands, from Fragonard perfume, to REN, and a wide range of very affordable natural lines. They had a blanket discount on over the bank holidays, so I stopped by to indulge my senses and keep an eye on any new trends.
I purchased a bottle of haircare by Apivita. Since 1979, their natural products have been inspired by the honey bee, the biodiversity of Greek nature, and the holistic philosophy of the ancient healer Hippocrates. The pure bee products and organic essential promote balance for the body, mind, and soul. So far so good. I smoothed honey and tea tree propoline shampoo through my hair and admired its delicate scent and 86% natural credentials at £13 for 250ml. (I paid a fiver in the sale). Then this scalp sensitive treatment lathered up way too fast. I quickly realised that it contained PEGs and the foaming agent SLS. I had bought it on impulse and without my reading glasses to hand. This fail not only killed my enthusiasm for the whole brand, but also reminded me that the majority of consumers are completely habituated to frothy foam in haircare.

When I shared some other organic shampoo with a couple of friends, they both whined later that it felt thin and "didn’t lather up enough" - despite getting a lovely fresh head of hair after use. For those in doubt, foam does not clean your hair and SLS will not heal an irritable scalp. We are creatures of habit and many brands uphold that status quo without re-educating consumers. I’m staying hard-nosed about it: keep a clear head and learn what to avoid.
This week I'd like to offer a service to all fellow parents - free of charge, of course. I call it my smug parenting survival kit. Essentially, it relies on the old adage "if you can't beat them, join them". You see, experience tells me that the best way to counter all those smug parents out there is to outsmug them. See their smug and raise them smugger. (Incidentally, if at this point you find yourself asking how to tell if a parent is of the smug variety, you've clearly never encountered one). First up, I advise affecting an air of nonchalance in front of said smug parent as you casually mention that your twoyear-old spoke a whole 10-word sentence the other day, did the washing up unaided, dressed themselves, or even used the potty willingly as if it's an everyday thing, which it may be. But I have my
doubts about most some of these. Secondly, if you ever find your child behaving in a way that attracts positive attention from those around you and you're in the midst of the smug parent, adopt a look that says "Oh that old thing? They do that all the time." (See last week’s column for assistance in the art of non-verbal communication). Another top tip is to insert the word "little" before using your child's name whenever possible. This conveys both a strong sense of their darling nature and underlines how advanced whatever achievement you are about mention is. And finally, if you're still not getting the reaction that you and your prodigy deserve and you find yourself continually outsmugged, I suggest writing a newspaper column about it instead and hoping that your smug parent friend reads it.

When helping a dog that 'does not do vets' got interesting Susan Gregersen
Being a mobile vet is an awesome, amazing, rewarding and truly adventurous way to spend ones working day - or night. The main part of the attraction is learning to strike the right balance of mixing a deep compassion and love for all animals with the skilful art, and some science, of treating the more than average challenging pets in their home environment. For the most successful outcomes for these animals - and their families it is important that treatment can take place in the safest and most comfortable surroundings possible and on their own terms. Now one such special and unpredictable patient I have ever had the pleasure to meet and treat at home in my nine years as a mobile vet in Sussex, was one bright Saturday afternoon when I was called out to treat what the owner called “a dog that does not do vets” and who had suddenly become very lame on one of his hind legs.
This is not at all an unusual description for a mobile vet to hear as we get many calls to treat rather unsociable or very large canines - or delicate and sensitive felines at home. This eight year old lame dog I was called out to treat clearly fitted all of those descriptions. What I learned, soon after I arriving at the big house on one of the distinct hilltops of Brighton, was that this particular dog, greeting me in safe distance from the other side of the garden pool, was to this UK vet of the unfamiliar breed called a “Native American Indian Dog”. This was apparently also the “undercover” name trademarked to this very large dog type and what had enabled his otherwise unlawful import with his family to the UK seven years prior: Kono, as my new patient was called, was clearly all wolf - or rather – an immensely handsome and shy wolf hybrid. The result of this type of breeding native to the USA is a unique, quite unusual type of dog, bearing all the expected characteristics of a wolf; shy, independent and with very strong flight reflexes.
For this vet, that translates into a very difficult task indeed to help him, especially at a time when he was feeling low and extra vulnerable. Now Kono’s lovely owners were merely unaware when they went to acquire a hypoallergenic dog, that this handsome dog possessed some very unique characteristics. And what I learned was that all the hard earned “tricks of the trade” I had picked up on over 6,000 home visits, certainly paid off that Saturday afternoon. Nora Nugent, Consultant Plastic Surgeon answers some questions on cosmetic surgery. What areas of cosmetic surgery do you do? I see people for cosmetic surgery of the face, breasts and body. This includes facelifts, eyelid surgery, breast reshaping, tummy tucks and liposuction. I also see people for nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. This includes treatments such as muscle relaxing injections for wrinkles, dermal fillers, or microneedling to improve the skin surface appearance. Why do people come to you for cosmetic surgery? People wish to have cosmetic surgery for a huge variety of reasons. Some have a feature of which they are very selfconscious, such as a large or a crooked nose, or very small or very large breasts. This can hugely affect their selfconfidence and quality of life. Others see me because their face or body has changed over time and they wish to improve or refresh their appearance. This could be because of the aging process or after significant
weight gain or weight loss. I also see women who have changes to their bodies and breasts after pregnancy who wish to improve their postpregnancy shape. How do you decide who should have cosmetic surgery? I see all patients for cosmetic surgery at least twice before any surgery takes place. This is to ensure that I can do a thorough assessment and that there is sufficient time to discuss what the procedure will involve and time to answer any questions that may arise. The discussion includes details on what the procedure can achieve for them, what the recovery period will be and any potential risks of the procedure. Each patient will then need to undergo a full assessment for the surgery that they are interested in and also have a check on their general health and well-being. To avoid a fright this Halloween, Southern Water is asking people to treat their toilets and not trick them by flushing away the wrong things. Ghastly items such as wet wipes, plasters and cotton buds should all be put in the bin. If flushed away, they mix with a greasy mass of congealed cooking oils and cause blockages which threaten to flood homes with wastewater. Last month, more than 59 tons of non-biodegradable items had to be removed from Peacehaven Treatment Works. That’s the equivalent weight of 37 hippos. Bruce, Southern Water’s
potty-mouthed sewer monster, who was found in the pipes at a wastewater treatment works, said: “Halloween can be a scary time of year in the sewers with ghoulish wipes on the prowl and blobs of fat creeping through the pipes. “Don’t let wet wipes come back to haunt you, only flush the three Ps - pee, poo and paper. a life in the day of an estate agent Today started well. 5 minutes to get from home above Queen’s Park to the office in Kemp Town on my bike, wet weather gear at the ready but so far, not needed. Murray’s day off; Karen and Kerri are also away as it’s halfterm, so four of us are in. We quickly discuss who will do what in the office to make sure we keep all bases covered whilst staff are off. First call of the day was a flooded drain...no surprise. We contact our drains’ man to go as soon as possible. Then I get ready for my first valuation. The property is vacant so we are told to collect a key from a central Brighton agent. We call them to confirm I’m coming over on the bike. They say their Kemp Town office has them. We call them. They say they have lent them to another agent to also carry out a valuation and that agent has not returned them...we call them, walk along and collect them. I then jump on the bike, togged up for the rain (it’s never the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes), and go to the property. I go in the entrance vestibule and discover that the inner door has a security code. Has anyone
told us this? No. I call the office, who call the first agent who says ‘Oh sorry, forgot to say...’ Hmm. I am told to ring one of the flat bells who will give me the code, which I do and at last get up to the top floor flat. The mortice key does not work and the yale is sticky but I manage to get in after some tender loving care. I look around the flat. It’s fine. Just one thing: in the hall is a tall wooden ladder on a catch. I look up and about 4 metres up is an open, yes open, casement window on a rainy day. You know I’m on my own... If I climb the ladder and fall, injure myself or break my neck, the office will not know for a while. Needs must! I decide to do the expeditious thing, climb the ladder and close the window, which I do, balancing on a rung about 3 metres off the ground, needing both hands to do the job. I get down, lock the flat up and deliver the keys back to the first agent, mentioning the code and the window. Now, I report back to the client on our valuation. No names, no pack drill but is it any wonder people think some agents are rank amateurs when, to just do one thing, we have to leap through about half a dozen hoops.

But you, as the public, will generally have little idea, until you are ‘in bed’ with an agent, whether or not you have chosen a champ or a chump. Be careful, be very careful! I have always been a chef in Brighton. After finishing my catering qualifcations at what is now City College Brighton and Hove, I was shaped in my early years as a chef at Brighton’s now gone food institute One Paston Place before moving on to cook at some of Brighton’s other finest restaurants. What inspires you? I get inspired by all things around me, just going into a shop to grab a pastry might make me want to recreate or work with the flavours that I have just tasted. The seasons also direct my inspiration. Looking around seeing what's growing at this time of year, deep into game season with the cold weather closing in, what's not to get inspired by? Or with Hallowe'en it's easy to be inspired to want to create a spooky 10 course tasting menu complete with horror and fun. What’s your favourite food memory? My favourite food memory is actually very recent. It would have to be the first service we delivered as a pop-up restaurant company. When we started The Set we had no

It's a great food memory because we knew then that we were on to something, and it was so much fun. What are your favourite ingredients and cooking techniques? I really enjoy making food that creates questions and excitement. Maltodextrin is a product now being used far more extensively in the modern kitchen and it's one of my favourite tools. It allows us to turn any fat based product into a powder that then turns back to its original form on your tongue. For example, a white powder made that you pop in your mouth and then in an instant, smooth peanut butter! Brilliant.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE CITY COUNCIL ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 TEMPORARY TRAFFIC ORDER – KINGS ROAD 1. NOTICE is hereby given that Brighton & Hove City Council have on the 31st. October 2014 made an Order pursuant to powers in Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended which has the following effect:Suspend the existing parking bays located on the southern side of Kings Road, extending from a point 7.6 metres east of a prolongation of the eastern kerbline of Western Street, westwards for a distance of 44.1 metres and to substitute this length with no waiting or unloading at any time. 2. The Order is necessary to increase visibility of and for vehicles servicing the i360 development which will be negotiating the junction of Kings Road and the service road to the Peace Statue. 3. Pedestrian access will be maintained. 4. This Order comes into force on 3rd. November 2014 for eighteen months or until such sooner time as the works are completed. Dated 31st October 2014.

To change the provisions of The Brighton & Hove (A23 London Road Area) (Various Restrictions) Order 2004 as amended and The Brighton & Hove (Marine Drive A259) (Bus & Cycle Lane & U-Turn) Order 2008 as amended so as to allow motorcycles (solo powered two wheelers including mopeds and scooters) to access the bus lanes on the A23 from Carden Avenue to Preston Drove and on the A259 from the authority boundary at Saltdean to the Ovingdean roundabout.

Albion looking to pick up a win against high-flying Cherries Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion The struggling Seagulls fall under the Sky Sports spotlight tomorrow evening (Saturday) with the pressure on Sami Hyypiä showing no signs of lessening. Brighton head along the south coast desperate for the victory which would bring an end to their current winless run in the league - a run which stretches back to August 23 and the side’s 2-1 home triumph over struggling Bolton. The Albion have only lost five of their 14 Championship games so far, which is just one more than Saturday’s fourth placed opponents. Hyypiä’s squad, however, has found it difficult to turn draws into wins – with only three other Championship sides having registered as many stalemates as the Seagulls’ seven. On the face of it, both Brighton and Bournemouth began this season in a similar situation. Neither benefit from the parachute payments enjoyed by some of their rivals and both were preparing for life without their chief goal threat. Bournemouth sold Lewis Grabban to Norwich City, while the Albion cashed in on Leo Ulloa. But while Ulloa’s replacements have yet to find their scoring boots - Adrian Colunga, Sam Baldock and Chris O’Grady have all yet to register in the league - the man charged with filling Grabban’s boots has been an almost immediate success. How Hyypiä would relish a striker on such a current hot streak. Another reason for Bournemouth’s early season success has been the form of midfielder Matt Ritchie. an able deputy and Hyypiä would presumably have no qualms about giving him his Championship bow if needed. Joe Bennett should return at left back in place of Adam Chicksen and Gordon Greer, also rested at Spurs, will almost certainly take his place alongside Lewis Dunk. The impressive young defender is rumoured to be attracting Premier League interest and his recent performances will have done nothing to dampen the appetite of the circling scouts. Craig Mackail-Smith will be pushing for a starting place after his hurly-burly cameo at White Hart Lane showed signs he is returning to full fitness, although second-guessing Hyypiä’s selection remains a near impossible task.

Nick Szczepanik, an Albion fan and football reporter for The Independent on Sunday, is chairing a panel at Exeter Street Hall on Friday, November 14 from 7.30pm. The hugely-experienced writer will pose questions to a collection of leading lights from the world of sports coverage, including the Daily Telegraph’s multi award-winning chief sports writer Paul Hayward. Also included in the line-up are Lynne Truss, former sports feature writer with The Times and author of Get Her Off The Pitch, Brian Oliver, former sports editor of The Observer and author of the definitive book on the Commonwealth Games, Mick
Cleary, rugby correspondent of the Daily Telegraph and Paul Weaver, Formula One correspondent of The Guardian and co-author of Flight of the Martlets: the Golden Age of Sussex Cricket. According to Mr Szczepanik the night represents a superb opportunity for local sports fans to quiz some of the biggest names in journalism - with something for everyone. He said: “Paul Hayward knows about every sport under the sun while the others are experts in certain fields but, like almost every sports writer, have been called upon to report in other areas. “I'm a football and NFL specialist, but I've covered tennis, croquet, four-in-hand carriage-driving, you name it. “There'll be questions sent in beforehand in the first half, Question Time-style, and then questions from the floor in the second.
“I'm sure there will be questions about the Rugby World Cup, Sussex cricket, and the Albion as well as the big stories of the moment, but I'm also expecting more general enquiries about why there aren't more women in the sports media - Lynne can tell some revealing stories about that - and the role of the media in sport.” And, of course, it is all for a good cause, as Mr Szczepanik explained: “Exeter Street Hall was and is a well-used local resource and the local community was given a chance to buy it when St Luke's church, the owners, had to sell. “We were able to raise enough money to keep it out of the hands of developers and now we all own a share on a not-for-profit basis. Straight from the commentary box Of course it was going to be a big night: a huge crowd, an historic stadium and the chance to create history by reaching the League Cup quarter-finals for only the second time in their history However, the next three games could well define Brighton and Hove Albion's season not a trip to the Lane. There were plenty of positives in the defeat to Spurs however the Seagulls must perform over the next eight days if they are to resurrect their season. On paper the first game at Bournemouth appears to be the biggest challenge. The Cherries hit eight goals against Birmingham last weekend and in mid-week wrote a new chapter in their history by beating West Bromwich Albion. Eddie Howe's side really are
on fire. In fact it would be no disgrace to come away from Dean Court with a point. However, draws are just not good enough. Sami Hyypia's side must surely pick up a victory in either of the home games against Wigan or Blackburn. If not the consequences could be dire for both the club and the manager. Chairman Tony Bloom will no doubt be concerned about the league position going into the next international break but the long term ramifications of a relegation battle are not
something he would want to entertain after two play-off finishes. Additional players are being sought and a proven striker would be top of the shopping list. However, if results do not improve he may well look at major surgery both on and off the pitch. A change of fortune may be required with one moment of luck to turn things around but to achieve longer term objectives he may need to keep his nerve, something thankfully for supporters, he is very good at.
