House prices hit all-time high Average home costs £346,358 Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Even estate agents were not certain if house prices could go any higher. Clearly, they could and did. Today, a unique analysis of Land Registry data shows the remarkable summer surge in prices continued into the autumn, despite warnings that the market had begun to stagnate. The analysis by Brighton & Hove Independent has revealed that the average price of a home in the city increased to £346,358 in the three months to the end of September - beating the previous record of £318,821 in the preceding quarter. For the first time - partly because of a record 1,597 transactions in the third quarter of the year - the aggregate value of homes bought and sold has exceeded £500 million.

Driving the increase in prices was the sale of high-value detached homes, with a record 168 sales in the quarter. The average price was a record £630,959. There were also a record 228 transactions involving semidetached homes - with a record average price of £402,077, beating the previous high of £382,896 set in the previous quarter. The average price of a terrace home was a record £391,140, with a record 414 transactions. The previous record average was £369,284 in the second quarter of the year. Similarly, the average price of a flat was an unprecedented £245,905 - with a record 787 transactions - beating the previous record of £238,567, set in the previous quarter. Cycling and rugby highlights Our Emma is in running in calendar of events for 2015 for Designer of the Year Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy A new community cycling event and a "fanzone" for the Rugby World Cup are among a programme of outdoor events being planned in 2015. The Velocity cycling event proposed for Madeira Drive on September 12 next year - will build on the huge popularity of cycling highlighted by this year’s Tour of Britain stage that finished in Brighton and Hove. It will feature amateur-grade races for all ages, rather than professional cyclists, giving the opportunity for local people and visitors to take part. There will also be cycling-themed attractions, displays, and exhibitions. The Rugby World Cup Fanzone on Madeira Drive from September 18 to 20 will enable people to savour the excitement of the opening weekend of the tournament, for which Brighton and Hove is a host city. The fanzone will screen the opening

match between England and Fiji on September 18, the local soldout matches at the Brighton Community stadium between South Africa and Japan on September 19 and between Samoa and the United States on September 20 – as well as other games over the weekend. A festival of rugby will be held alongside on Madeira Drive. The programme of events proposed for parks and open spaces - to be discussed by councillors next week - includes a pop-up comedy and theatre venue on the north lawn of St Peter’s Church as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival in May, Shakedown Music Festival at Waterhall in July, the Sussex Festival of Nature in Stanmer Park in June, and a new 10-mile road race, starting and finishing on Hove Lawns, in October. A meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council’s Economic Development and Culture Committee on Thursday (November 13) is being recommended to give landlord’s consent to

the proposed programme of events in Madeira Drive and the city’s parks and other open spaces next year. The busy line-up includes regular fixtures on the city’s calendar, such as the Brighton Marathon in April and the Veteran Car Run in November, along with new attractions. Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, committee chair, said: “Outdoor events play a major role in attracting visitors all year round, adding to the vibrancy of the city for residents and tourists and making a significant contribution to the local economy."

City buses face disruption after drivers vote for action over pay Bus drivers - represented by Unite the Union and the GMB have voted for industrial action over pay. Of 515 votes cast, 363 voted in favour of taking part in any action. Martin Harris, managing director of Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company, remained hopeful of a settlement. He said: "Pay negotiations have lasted several months in respect of an offer due to take effect last July. "Despite an offer of 2.3%, plus improved Sunday and bank holiday premium payments, and a guaranteed minimum of a 2.5% increase next year, with an inflation index to protect it, we have been unable to achieve acceptance by a majority of those staff voting. "In an industrial action ballot, 363 votes were cast in favour of industrial action, though it

should be said that the total staff affected by the pay offer number 919. "I value the important jobs our staff undertake, especially in the present operating conditions due to the Lewes Road works, but this is a more than reasonable offer.

Emma Prentice, designer of Brighton & Hove Independent, has been shortlisted in the Designer of the Year category in the EDF Energy London and South of England Media Awards. Emma, 24, has worked for the newspaper for more than a year - during which time it has been officially recognised as the best-read newspaper in Brighton and Hove. Greg Hadfield, editorial director, said: "Every week, Emma produces stunning work that helps Brighton & Hove Independent stand head and shoulders above any other newspaper in the city." There were more than 300 entries in 20 categories in the prestigious EDF Energy awards. Winners will be announced on Thursday (November 13) at an awards ceremony at the American Express Community Stadium.

"I remain willing to discuss ways of finding a solution with our trade union representatives and sincerely hope that we will be able to avoid further disruption of services to our passengers who have also had a lot to contend with in recent week."

■ Bin workers have agreed to suspend industrial action until the end of the year. GMB members working for Brighton and Hove City Council’s Cityclean division came to the decision after council agreed to review job descriptions by December 31. The long-running dispute relates to 38 lorry drivers, who want professional qualifications recognised when pay grades are evaluated. They want to be put on a higher pay grade than six street cleaning Martin Harris, managing director of staff who now earn the same as Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company them.

Child sexual exploitation: Learnin Jean Calder @jeancalder101

Alexis Jay’s recent report on sexual exploitation in Rotherham gave a "conservative estimate" of 1,400 children - mostly girls, some as young as 11 - who were threatened, tortured, raped and trafficked over a 16-year period, while police and a

council, described as “misogynistic” in culture, failed to protect them or charge perpetrators. This was the latest in a series of scandals revealing that police and social services employees in areas across the country and over several decades did not just turn a blind eye to abuse, but also blamed young victims and, in some cases, actively colluded with perpetrators. Powerful and high-profile offenders like Jimmy Savile and Cyril Smith

MP escaped justice, their victims silenced by agencies that should have assisted them. So far, the focus of investigation has been Wales, parts of London, the Midlands and the north of England, where the abuse of many children appears to have been organised and particularly blatant. We should, however, not assume that casual misogyny, victim-blaming, collusion, and cover-ups have not happened here in the south.

Neither had the psychiatrist who, ignoring the sadism of the abuser, told a case conference “the real pathology here is the mother’s”. Around the same time, I met a young girl who alleged longterm sadistic abuse by a local professional. In common with many abuse victims, she had mental health problems. The police in that case failed to investigate, though she had supplied detailed information to corroborate her allegations. A simple search of the alleged perpetrator’s home could have supported her claims, but it did not take place. Instead, the police delayed for weeks, then wrote to the man saying they would be visiting to discuss her complaint. I remember pleading with the police not to forewarn him, but they did. I was never sure whether a search took place. What is certain is that, if the evidence she described existed, he had weeks to remove it. I spoke to her psychiatrist (neither of those referred to above) expressing frustration about professional failure to support young people who disclosed abuse. He said he thought the age of consent should be reduced to 11. In the 1990s, I learned of a boy in his early teens who was in care, but regularly visiting and possibly living with a known paedophile, apparently with the knowledge of social services. I had never met the boy, but passed the information to the police - only to be told that they had no plans to intervene because “at least we know where he is”. The truth is that from the 1980s up until the present, in defiance of the law, many professionals have treated 13 or 14 and even puberty as the We should not assume de facto age of that casual misogyny, consent. It was gentler police inspector who happened on the liberal palate to provide to be in court, remarked with a contraceptive advice, end unwanted We may consider “our” politicians and officials to have been more enlightened than elsewhere. In almost all of the known affected areas, however, councils and police services were run by people who considered themselves progressive, priding themselves on their commitment to liberty, diversity, and community cohesion. These principles became theoretical justifications for abject failure to protect young people from sexual predators. I trained as a social worker in Sussex in the mid-1980s. As part of my course, I worked on placement at a local mental health facility and set up a small group for women. I wanted to invite a profoundlydepressed and withdrawn middleaged patient who was said to have had an incestuous “relationship” with her father. The consultant psychiatrist in charge refused permission for me to approach her, describing her as a “disgusting little woman”. That woman had endured sexual abuse by her father from early childhood through into adulthood. Ironically, once the group began, it emerged that, unknown to their doctors, at least two of the participants had been abused in childhood. One had experienced four decades of mental illness and treatment, but had never had the opportunity to disclose safely the fact that she had been raped for years by her wealthy and by then long-dead father. After I qualified, I worked in a social services-run project for vulnerable 16- to 20-year-old girls and young women in Hove (later closed in an early round of budget cuts). Most had been sexually abused. Many had not been believed when they first disclosed

As well as proving a hit with Brighton diners, the winning recipe has now helped his restaurant earn the highest possible rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA). Mr Coggings said: “The most important thing to get right when you’re opening a burger restaurant is the meat and we get ours delivered twice a week from Redlands, a farm just up the road at Horam. We just mince it and add as little possible and it’s proving really popular.”

Fathomless Riches: Or How I Went From Pop To Pulpit by Rev Richard Coles My Saturday mornings are usually spent in the company of the Rev Richard Coles. I bet yours are, too. He is the lovely presenter of Saturday Live on BBC Radio 4; he has crept into our hearts and minds. But what we might forget is that he was part of The Communards, who had a No1 hit with Don’t Leave me This Way. Pop star turned vicar. Now, that has got to be worth reading about. And I can assure you, it really is. It starts with his Christmas Day some years ago, when he was part of The Communards and was at home with his family, with a migraine. Sadly Divorce and separation are now a part of everyday life. But the fact it is commonplace doesn’t mean it is any less painful – with the potential to be traumatic. However in choosing a Collaborative Family Lawyer to guide you through the process the pain, for all involved can be minimised and you can plan for your new life ahead. Resolution’s third Family Dispute Resolution Week will take place 24-28 November this year. This awareness-raising week aims to highlight the alternatives to court for separating couples and their families. During this week all over England and Wales Resolution members will be organising events and spreading the word to increase understanding of how to separate outside of the courtroom. He hopes that he can rely on the "love of a stranger" and, sure enough, a naked man gets out of his car with tinsel tied around part of his anatomy where Christmas decorations are not normally to be found. His travels while searching for an inner life and his journeys with the band are not only hilarious, but also witty, wise, and compassionate. If only there were more autobiographies like this. This is a man who is fearless with the truth, and with himself, without a hint of pretension or self-justification. He had a riot in the heady days of promiscuity and casual drug-taking - and his congregation, quite rightly, adore him. So will you.

system and processes involved will seem like a minefield. So how do you know where to turn for support and guidance? But many clients will question if it is ever really possible to navigate the ending of a relationship with respect and trust, the answer is yes! Some people will be unaware you don’t have to go to court for your separation or divorce. Nor that there are many different options available to you, including mediation, collaborative practice and arbitration. These processes aim to support couples to work together to decide what happens to any children after your separation and how money and assets such as the family home will be divided. Not only is the process more transparent, it is quicker and more cost effective. Importantly couples feel more in control and better able to resolve their disputes openly. This is vital as minimising conflict during your separation can also reduce the emotional trauma and long term impacts on children. As a family lawyer, collaborative practitioner and a mediator, I look forward to Dispute Resolution Week. Why? Because everyday I see how powerful and effective non-court dispute resolution processes can be. Helping couples through this major life event and achieve a fair outcome and sustainable solutions that work for them and their families is hugely rewarding. For more information about how Jo O Sullivan can help you or Dispute Resolution Week visit www.osullivanfamilylaw.com/ www.resolution.org.uk/ On Monday 24th November from 10 am to 5pm I am joined by fellow practitioners’, Lynne Passmore (Collaborative Lawyer and mediator), Susie de Castilho (Family Consultant) and Leia Monsoon (Family Consultant and mediator) for couples to drop in and meet us. This is an opportunity for separating couples to come along and discuss process options and in particular how we work together to best deal with the legal and emotional consequences of the break-down of a relationship.

Jo will be delighted to discuss (free of charge and confidentially) how she can assist you and your family. Call today: 07780 676 212, Email: jo@osullivanfamilylaw.com or visit her firm’s site on www.osullivanfamilylaw.com

"Older people have worked their whole life and contributed generously to taxation and national insurance; they are not a burden on society. They pay around £45 billion in tax every year. Increasingly, older people provide unpaid childcare for their grandchildren and make up an army of volunteers essential to many services. “The state pension in Britain is the lowest in Europe, at just under a third of average earnings. Over four million out of 12 million pensioners are entitled to Pension Credit.C One in six older people is classified as poor. M “Pensioners should continue to receive benefits such as bus passes, freeY prescriptions and eye tests, free TVCM licences for the over-75s, and winter fuel MY allowances.”

Nearly 100 older people attended a hustings to question party candidates about policies affecting their generation ahead of the next general election. The meeting at the Brighthelm Centre was organised by the National Pensioners Convention and the panel included Dot Gibson, the organisation’s general secretary. Also on the panel were: Clarence Mitchell, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion; Nancy Platts, the Labour candidate for Brighton Kemptown; and Davy Jones, the Green candidate for Brighton Kemptown. Ms Gibson told the meeting: “There is everything to be fought for before the next general election. “This is not just for today’s pensioners but for future pensioners - our children and our grandchildren. Goodness knows how long the child in the pram will have to work.” Ms Platts said that 1.6 million pensioners living in poverty was a national scandal, with many describing themselves simply as “surviving”. She said: “Too many pensioners are choosing between heating and eating. We need a strong voice fighting the energy companies.” Mr Mitchell said his party had protected pensioners who “play by the rules” - as shown by the scrapping of fuel duty rise, the “triple-lock” guarantee to maintain the vlaue of pensions, as well as new ISA allowances and pensioner bonds. The triple-lock guarantee - brought in by the coalition government four years ago - is aimed at ensuring the state pension rises each year by the rate of inflation, average earnings, or 2.5%, whichever is higher. Mr Jones said all the major parties supported austerity while pensioners contributed £45 billion in taxes last year, alongside providing unpaid care work. He said: “Pensioners did not cause the economic crisis - bankers and their rich friends in the Conservative Party did.”

“At the very heart of Conservative Party values is the principle of fairness in old age.K That means providing proper support for those elders who’ve done the right thing and played by the rules throughout their lives. “To that end, a Conservative government will always seek to improve life for pensioners by increasing the state pension and protecting critical benefits such as winter fuel payments, free prescriptions, free bus passes, and free TV licences for the over-75s - all of them maintained under the Conservative-led government since 2010. “As a Conservative parliamentary candidate, I am personally committed to supporting pensioners wherever possible.”

“Considering pensioners as a single uniform group nowadays is wrong. I promise that I won’t patronise older people, who have aspirations and ambitions just like everyone else. “Where older people need care, a Labour government wants to see a reformed, integrated health and social care service that will deliver improved and joined-up care for older people. Unfortunately, the Health and Social Care Act is fragmenting and privatising NHS services, making it harder to achieve these objectives. “Labour will preserve the value of the state pension with the triple lock, rising annually by inflation, earnings or 2.5%. Whichever is highest.”

TEDxBrighton 2014 TEDxBrighton 2014 - with 19 speakers - was a sell-out, with more than 1,000 paying to attend the one-day event at Brighton Dome. Speakers included: Peter James, the crime novelist; Sam Roddick, the artist, radical activist, and ethical erotic emporium founder; Fox Fisher, artist, trans activist, gender documenter, and co-founder of My Genderation documentary films; and Ruth Anslow, who talked about how she and her sister, Amy, co-founded hiSbe, a different type of supermarket that is independent and built on ethical and transparent trading practises and sustainable sourcing policies. Sam Orams, TEDxBrighton producer, said: "The TEDxBrighton team and I are completely thrilled with the success of this year's event. The speakers were fantastic and there was a real buzz around the Dome - which was great to see. "We sold out days before the event, so I'd like to say sorry to those who couldn't attend, but we will increase capacity even further next year.” Comedy

Editor quits

Melbourne victory

Caroline Lucas will appear tonight (Friday) on Have I Got News For You. Ms Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, will join Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, the regular team captains, for the latest edition of the satirical news quiz on BBC1. The programme will also include Jo Brand as the guest host. The other guest panellist will be Richard Osman, creator and co-presenter of Pointless, the quiz show.

Michael Beard, the editor of The Argus newspaper, has resigned after nine years. Mr Beard is leaving at the end of the month to take up a communications role with Public Health England. He said: “I am ready for a new challenge. I have been with The Argus for nearly a decade, the longest I have spent at any of the papers where I have worked. “The time is right for me to change direction.”

Ryan Moore, the Brighton-born jockey, has won the Melbourne Cup, one of the world’s richest races, on the German horse Protectionist. The two-mile race is a national event in Australia, comparable to the Grand National in this country. Moore, 31, who was brought up in Woodingdean and is the son of Gary Moore, the trainer who had stables in Warren Road, pushed the German-trained winner several lengths clear of British hope Red Cadeaux in the final 300 metres.

In Preston Park

A 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted on Brighton seafront in the early hours of Friday, October 31. Sussex Police said: “The assault by touching was reported at about 4.20am. The victim was accosted on the walkway between Madeira Drive and Marine Drive, near the Harvester pub, which was closed at the time." Anyone with information is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101, email 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk or call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, free and anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Brighton and Hove is the secondmost-popular town or city for Londoners owning second homes. Only Chichester is more popular, according to 2011 Census data and research by Hamptons International, the estate agents. The figures were published in the Sunday Times, which reported 2,348 Londoners own second homes in Brighton and Hove - compared with 2,714 in Chichester.

Additional parking space has been created in Preston Park. The parking places, which came into operation this week, are in the triangle area southeast of the Velodrome. Brighton and Hove City Council, which has been working with the Friends of Preston Park, has installed bollards to the northeast entrance - allowing access for blue-badge-holders, but providing a deterrent to others. There is now better signage and wooden posts are being repaired or replaced to stop parking on the grass.

“Driving isn’t part of what I normally do, so it’s a nice challenge.” Dedicated spectators included two brothers who have watched the proceedings for more than 30 years. Brian Sawyer, 79, said: “We usually try and see if we can get a car each, so I’ll have this car, and I’ll have this one, to see who comes in the nearest like.” Across the road, John and Geraldine Goodman have made the daytrip from Witham in Essex for more than 20 years. Mr Goodman, 68, a town councillor and former mayor, said: “We’ll stay here until 4.30pm to see the last car in.” Tony Johnstone, chair of Brighton & Hove Motor Club and

chief official for Brighton, said: “It’s working better than it’s ever worked for us.” Only 360 of the 445 entrants qualified for a finisher’s medal.

London to Brighton Della Cheshire @DellaCheshire It was a land-based first place for Sir Ben Ainslie in a wet and windy Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Lord Irvine Laidlaw, a shareholder in Ben Ainslie Racing, drove the most successful Olympic sailor ever in a 1904 Panhard-Levassor across the ceremonial finish line on Madeira Drive at 10.12am on Sunday. Reflecting on the ethos of the event, Sir Ben said: “I think the most important thing is just to have made it.” Meanwhile, in his unique 1904 Wilson-Pilcher, Ross Brawn OBE, former team principal at Mercedes F1, nearly didn’t make it. Due to tear the flag at dawn at the start in Hyde Park, as a nod to the 1896 Emancipation Run, Mr Brawn said: “I didn’t quite get there - the damn thing wouldn’t start.” Arriving shortly after noon, the RAC having replaced a broken oil pipe in Crawley, a telltale rainbow on the road suggested the problem persisted. Mr Brawn, who intends to participate regularly, said:

When motoring was an adventure for the privileged and wealthy few Graham Chainey

Some 440 veteran cars braved the elements on Sunday to cover the 60 miles from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive. The event commemorates 1896, when the

requirement for motor vehicles to be preceded by a man carrying a red flag was abolished, and the speed limit was raised to 12 mph. To celebrate, in November that year, 33 cars set off from London - just 14 of which made it to the Metropole at Brighton. The Run has been held annually since 1930, with cars of 1905 and

earlier being eligible. My great-grandfather was an early motoring enthusiast. According to family tradition, when taking delivery of his first Daimler, he was unfazed by the fact he had not previously driven. Ordering everyone on board, he handed his wife the manual and set off for the Sussex coast.

Apparently all went well, though another story speaks of the brakes once failing on Duncton hill and everyone leaping for their lives. I have been leafing through his copy of the British Motor Tourist’s ABC for 1905. Within its gilt-edged pages (“crests and leather covers to order”), one enters a bygone world of peaked-capped servants and berugged passengers, of privilege and primitive technology. Most of the book comprises an alphabetical guide to towns, giving mileages, market days, and the addresses of mechanics and spirit stores. Whereas in 1896 there had been no garage facilities in Brighton, with those 14 cars being stored overnight at Dupont’s stables in Waterloo Street, by 1905 the Grand Hotel had “garage, pits and spirit”, and there were motor repairers in King’s Road, Gloucester Road, and Upper St James’s Street. There were three agents for Carless’ petrol, with Dunlop tyres available at the Old Ship Hotel. There was also a garage in George Street, Hove. Users being presumed to be of sporting inclination, there are lists of hunting centres, racing fixtures, golf courses and yacht clubs. The maps show a sparse web of highways, and there is much talk of gradients and roads “unsuitable for motors”. There is period flavour in the introductory “Hints to Motor Tourists”: “Spare inner tubes should be packed in suitable bags dusted with french chalk… Detachable non-skidding devices should be attached before entering towns and other areas where bad

roads are to be apprehended, and removed when the danger zone has been passed … To avoid misty goggles in wet weather, rub the outer surfaces with soap and then wipe clean with a dry handkerchief … In frosty weather never forget to let the water out of the radiators, even though a stoppage of an hour or two only may be contemplated.” Densimeter readings for petrol at various temperatures are provided, and there is advice on the repair of pneumatic tyres. By an act of 1903, the speed limit had been raised to 20 mph (10 mph in built-up areas). Penalties for speeding or having obscured number plates ranged from £10 for a first offence, £20 for a second, to £50 or three months’ imprisonment for a third - large sums in those days when the average weekly wage was just over £1. An automobilist was liable to pay an annual tax of 15 shillings for his chauffeur (whose life was valued by the insurance companies at a standard £100; the car itself, however, at £250). A car could be shipped from London to Hamburg for £1. Motoring at that date was still a sport and an adventure for the wealthy rather than an everyday activity for the many. For all the punctures, dust, recalcitrant hills, and prejudicial legislation, one can envy, I think, those highseated, bewhiskered figures in their capes and furs. Homes have been found for Winston and Boston

Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. Each week the newspaper will feature a different dog currently awaiting a new home. This week is Rubin...

Factfile:

"Rubin is a 2 ½ year old male Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross. "He is a very friendly boy with people and will happily say hello to everyone. In a calm environment he is very a gentle and affectionate chap. "Rubins favourite activity is playing with toys! He likes to play with 2 balls so he can carry one in his mouth and chase the one you throw! He is equally happy to bounce around and entertain himself. "Rubin has lived with a female Staffordshire Bull Terrier whilst at the centre but does need some training to help him feel more relaxed around other dogs out and about. "Rubin is looking for a home with older teens and needs to be the only pet in the home. "His new owners need to be active and willing to take him for long walks in quieter areas. He is a good boy in the car and will happily jump in."

What’s the difference between a human hospital and an animal hospital?

Vicky Butler-Ball

Outstanding vets for you and your pets

People often ask what the difference is between a veterinary hospital and a human hospital. Veterinary surgeon Vicky ButlerBall looks at some of the surprising similarities to people’s treatment when animals come in for veterinary surgery. When dogs and cats come in for operations they are checked in by a nurse in the morning. They have their own hospital name band before getting their own warm kennel. Before the anaesthetic, they receive painkillers and a sedative to help them relax. Without a sedative, some dogs can become really excited and bark constantly which can be annoying for other patients. An intravenous catheter is placed in their leg and they are anesthetised. A qualified nurse monitors their anaesthetic with specialist breathing, oxygen and blood pressure monitoring equipment. To avoid infections, we use special hand gels, and sterile gloves and gowns just like in a human operating theatre.

¨ Friendly, caring and professional ¨ RCVS approved Brighton Veterinary Hospital ¨ Great value services - in sickness and in health ¨ Providing emergency and critical care ¨ Vets & Nurses on site 24 hours a day ¨ For more information visit: www.new-priory.com For some operations we use keyhole techniques, where a camera is inserted in a small hole and surgical treatment is performed via another tiny hole. Keyhole techniques are particularly useful in animals because the wounds are small, more comfortable and heal more quickly. Animals, unlike people, often want to chew their stitches out so having tiny wounds is really helpful in their recovery and may reduce the risk of post-operative infections.

As animals wake up, there is someone to reassure them and they are given a tasty hospital meal before they go home. In fact, one of the biggest differences is that our patients really seem to appreciate their hospital meals! Whilst a visit to hospital is always nerve wracking many pet owners ask if they can come to us for treatment too! Vicky Butler-Ball is a veterinary surgeon at New Priory Vets, Brighton

Business New centre will help catapult businesses into digital future Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Brighton and Hove has been chosen as one of three cities to host a "digital catapult centre" a space for start-ups and small and medium-size companies to develop digital ideas. The new centre - due to open in New England House in March next year - will be established by a consortium led by the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). It will work across the whole Coast to Capital region, which includes West Sussex, the Gatwick Diamond, Croydon, Lewes, and Brighton and Hove. Participants will be able to use it to connect and collaborate with larger businesses, universities, and public sector organisations. The centre will host a highbandwidth connection linking it with two other centres planned for Bradford and Sunderland, and

with the national Digital Catapult Centre at King's Cross in London. Projects undertaken at the Brighton centre will be led by Coast to Capital LEP in collaboration with the core delivery partners: Brighton University and Wired Sussex. They will focus specifically on encouraging innovation and value from real-time and locationbased data. Other project partners include American Express, Brighton and Hove City Council, and Gatwick Airport. Ed Vaizey, the minister for the digital economy, said: “The new Digital Catapult Centre will provide a thriving, state-of-theart hub for some of the country’s most innovative digital companies and entrepreneurs.” Government funds of £500,000 will pay for the initial set-up. Activity will run until March 2018. The consortium will also be tasked with: initiating and collaborating with the Digital Catapult on a range of innovative

projects designed to be accessible to start-up and SME businesses to use and learn from; creating flexible and fluid links between universities and the local business community that enable university led R&D in the Digital Catapult challenge areas to be converted into commercial market opportunities which can be prototyped and piloted by start-ups and SMEs; helping to develop the higher level skills needed to realise and exploit new data and media capabilities. Phil Jones, chief executive of Wired Sussex and digital champion at Coast to Capital LEP, said: “Digital Catapult Brighton will operate around three principles: innovation, collaboration and openness. "The projects it houses will provide real opportunities for start-ups and small digital businesses to work with each other and with universities and large corporates to turn ideas into activities with real value to them.”

How to improve your recruitment skills Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce has a two-hour training course on November 13 to help people improve their recruitment skills, run by Brian Warren and Melissa Mills from Quick HR. Brian has extensive experience working in HR as a recruiter and a consultant as well as training businesses on managing people from hiring to fixing problems. Love it or hate it, but every manager has to work on recruiting

new people from time to time. Here are 10 key areas to consider:

time to look at CVs or interview people. Plan for this: making time means hiring more quickly.

1 Why hire? Before rushing to recruit, decide if it is a permanent job or for a fixedterm.

7 Some candidates will stick to a script. Many people say they are looking for a new challenge or career development in interviews, so check what they really mean.

2 What is the job? Instead of rush to replace like for like, after a resignation, think about what the company needs for the future. It is easier to make changes to a role before hiring. 3 Where do candidates see jobs? The days of advertising in one place are over. Think about ways to promote a vacancy in as many places as possible, including social media. 4 Promoting a job vacancy also reflects the company’s image. Make sure it fits with other messages about the firm. 5 What’s the interview plan? Work out who will interview and decide about checking skills using any practical exercises.

Brian Warren from Quick HR

6 What’s the timescale? Managers often lose a week or more because they do not have

8 Is it true? Some candidates prepare a version of events and interviewers might need to explore a topic more if there are any doubts. 9 Interviews and first impressions work both ways: the candidates are assessing the interviewers too. 10 Is it going to last? The candidate might be wonderful, but is it a long-term fit with what the company needs? Short-term fixes sometimes fall apart and cause more problems than waiting a little longer to hire the right person. For more information about the event, contact Brian Warren on 07969 328492 or email brian. warren@quickhr.biz.Visit: www. businessinbrighton.org.uk/events

This new production by the play’s original director, Max Stafford-Clark, was

hailed as a triumph. After the opening show on Tuesday at 7.45pm there will be a post-show discussion with director Max Stafford-Clark. Tickets, £10 - £33 available from the venue or online at: www.atgtickets.com .

Conveyancing – a 21st century profession? Back in the day, when I started in agency in the 1980s, a sale would typically take between four to six weeks to come to exchange of contracts and we would expect between two and four weeks to hand over the keys. This makes a total of between four and ten weeks for the majority of sales. I think the average was eight weeks. In those days, all letters went by post or DX and the searches were by post. They ‘act in the client’s best interest’. They think all estate agents want is the completion cheque and assume, whenever we call or email, we are thinking about our own business. Of course, some agents are like that and don’t care about the communication service they could be

providing; all they have to tell their corporate masters is when the money is coming in. But there are estate agents out there who see that sales chasing and moving the transaction along is what the seller and buyer both want, so they do it. The focus of transactions needs to change amongst the legal fraternity. This is not a battle to prove the other solicitor is slow, inefficient, doesn’t understand, is over- picky, and a host of other negatives. The focus needs to be on trying to get buyer and seller to where they want to go; getting moved. This requires

collaboration and partnership between all the bodies involved in the transaction. It requires a solicitor to check the client’s papers as soon as they see them, to ensure any issues which could cause a problem are flagged up to the seller and are proactively dealt with. So often, a sale proceeds for many weeks before a solicitor seems to look closely at the papers then it all ‘kicks off’. There needs to be a device or system that conveyancers could put in place to manage problematic issues proactively. I know some solicitors will hate me for talking so frankly but the efficient ones will not. They know that sellers and buyers generally want to move as soon as possible and they will invest time energy and thought, especially the latter, to clear the way for that to happen. We are not in the 19th century but the 21st. Let’s have a conveyancing service to match. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. Paulbonett@bonetts.co.uk Twitter: @bonettpa

The places I eat

Bring your own cocktail? Six into two does not go! Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn

Writing for a newspaper, managing a website, working for a major retailer, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and - perhaps, most importantly - allowing time to relax means that you have to be acutely organised and slightly precious about how you spend your time, ensuring that all these attributes to life get catered for accordingly. This is why, on the November 1, I was incredibly disappointed with BYOC - Bring Your Own Cocktail - for letting me down. Having been contacted by BYOC’s PR company asking for a review for the Brighton & Hove Independent, I pencilled them in for a post-SoberOctober alcohol-fuelled treat. I’d heard positive things about BYOC: you can bring your own booze and watch experienced barmen pour you a range of cocktails while you revel in the quirky, vintage decor. We were very excited to be attending what has been labelled one of the best cocktail bars

Coffee Chronicles November is best known as the month when we celebrate the torture inflicted by the government as a punishment for a failed attempt

in the city. Making the booking for four people, word got out this is where we would be spending our Saturday night and two friends visiting from London asked to join in the alcoholic festivities as paying guests. Could the booking be expanded to six? No problem, said BYOC. Except upon arrival, we were down as a table for two. And with a venue as tiny as this, there was no room for moving to another table; they were already full or expecting other prebooked customers. Squeezing inside, we gathered round and waited for the receptionist to assess the error. We weren’t offered any additional seats, nor were our coats taken. Standing awkwardly in a bar as big as your living room isn’t very cosy or welcoming. We were made to feel copiously unwanted by a barman who stood over those of us lucky enough to find a seat, glaring down as though we were wasting his time by not being ready to pour drinks. It was with this kind of attitude where BYOC began to unravel. It was now 9.20pm, 20

by @LittleCoffeeCo of high treason. We do this by burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes - and this apparently child-friendly event dwarfs the fact

minutes into our booking. The receptionist - gosh, I did feel sorry for her - tried her very best to accommodate the six of us: "We can put you here until 10pm and then move you onto a different table". It was great that she attempted to fit us in. We agreed, desperate to relax, to take our coats off and enjoy the evening. Before any of these things could happen, our two London guests were fleeced of their £20 - the fee you pay for two hours of a bartender’s time - feeling slightly baffled that they were paying for two hours when we had already wasted 20 minutes. It was now 9.30pm. And we sat, packed in like sardines onto a table for two. And we waited, eyeing our £70-worth of prebrought alcohol sitting unopened on the tiny table and watching an incredibly self-assured barman entertain other guests who were all having a great time. We patiently waited until 9.45pm, then left. Refund duly obtained, a range of excuses

and apologies were thrown around. "We don’t deal with that PR company anymore."‘; "We want you to have the real BYOC experience"; and "Give us a call and come back another time". Sorry, but I wouldn’t revisit a fantastic restaurant the following week to see whether it was actually really bad. Surely that defeats the whole point of inviting press and writing a review? Some readers may think this is too harsh, but in the busy world of life, there isn’t much room for second chances, especially when you have a deadline and a newspaper schedule to keep to. BYOC failed to impress due to inexcusably poor communication between their PR company and their business. Further to this, the rude attitude of the bartender dealing with our table was unnecessary. We left very disappointed and upset. Off we trundled into the night, clutching our bottles of gin, rum and vodka ready to place back in the drinks cabinet for another evening.

that November is also World Vegan Month. It's ironic that fireworks scare our pets and that bonfires burn our wildlife, during the month that is specifically dedicated to saving our furry, spikey, and scaly friends. Veganism to independent coffee shops is like Meal Deals is to Sainsbury's: Nobody does it better.

From soya cappuccinos and fruit smoothies to cruelty-free sandwiches and gloriously-gooey brownies, veganism needn't be freaky, incense-ridden, or drowned in legumes and lettuce. It can be a totally different kettle of tofu, so be brave and give it a go this November. You can still enjoy your usual

Time Waits For No Mum @no_mum I’ve been getting sentimental. Tibbons recently turned two - which prompted me to print off a batch of photographs so that I can make a proper album charting his first two years. As a brief aside, this is surely a much more challenging task for the modern parent, in possession of a smartphone and, therefore, approximately 5,000 photos a year of the child’s life, than it ever was for those grandparent types. Anyhow, Tibbons loves the camera almost as much as the camera loves him. And as I browsed photos for this album (which I hope to get round to completing in time for his 18th birthday), it occurred to me that I should share with you all - as learned from Tibbons - how to take a good photograph in front of the camera. Tip 1: Whatever mood you are trying to convey in the photograph, ensure that your facial expression is a caricature of this for best effect. So mild happiness becomes a sunshine beam of a smile with all your teeth visible; slight irritation at having your photo taken becomes a full-on sulky lip pout and so on and so forth. Tip 2: Use whatever props you may have to hand to inject more life and humour into your photographs, from a wooden teapot on your head to a plasticine beard, it’s sure to make your pictures a talking point. Tip 3: To create an arty effect without the aid of Photoshop or specialist software, shake your head quickly and repeatedly from side to side as the photograph is taken. Tip 4: Don’t be afraid to look away from the camera, walk away from the camera, or throw things at the camera. All are sure to make for an interesting picture. Experiment! There you have it. Time to get snapping.

coffee and cake, but know that nothing died for you to do so. Alternatively, you could revel in the sadistic slaughter of sentient beings before nipping out with the kids and setting light to the effigy of a criminal in your garden. Find The Little Coffee Company at 4 Bartholomews, BN1 1HG.

Beauty Pretty Good Thinking

Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan

Bernard Chevilliat and his brother moved to the Ardèche in 1977 after studying biology. They set up a small farm up in the countryside and built hundreds of beehives. Nûriël, Bernard’s wife, joined the buzz - and together they founded Melvita in 1983 to develop natural and organic beauty products for daily use without the need for harsh chemicals. Melvita gained early Ecocert certification in 2002; it is a household name in France, and well stocked in the pharmacies. I was blown away by the purity, fragrance, and price point when I searched the ranges online (haircare, supplements, perfume, and so on). I rediscovered the Rose Nectar range in Paris last month and it has really satisfied my passion for delightful, affordable personal care, with good clear labelling. Rose Nectar moisturiser is perfect for dehydrated skin. The fresh rose extracts are obtained by enfleurage to hold in the skin's natural moisture by maintaining the hydrolipidic film. It is great under daily makeup or at night, leaving a fantastic hint of rosiness in the air - which also soothes and calms me to sleep, no easy feat at times (£27 for 40ml). Apply BB Cream SPF15 for a light, ultra-supple texture using fingers for a quick smooth uplift that lasts all day. It is my "go to" daily base especially for weekends, as the tint is

completely natural looking. Rose floral water and a Wild Rose petal extract hydrate the skin and improving the circulation of water in the epidermis. Mineral pigments provide sheer coverage and a radiant result. The organic formula mattifies, moisturises and balances. The pointy applicator doesn’t squirt too much out at once (£25 for 40ml). Rose Extraordinary Water is a Red Best of Beauty award winner: "These nourishing, serum-like gels are packed with plumping hyaluronic acid for softer skin in one sweep". The delicately-scented formula combines the repairing and astringent properties of rose floral water with the invigorating properties of marsh clover. Great after removing makeup (£17 for 100ml). I’ve written before about rosehip oil. What it lacks in glamour, it makes up for in essential fatty acids. This bottle is as pure as you like (£23 for 50ml) and an essential overnight standby to look revitalised. Bernard and the others continue to lead their technical team in the countryside. Sami Hyypiä

Match preview: Brighton and Hove Albion v Blackburn Rovers

Seagulls need back-to-back wins to boost league position Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Sami Hyypiä faces two very different dilemmas ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) match with Blackburn Rovers. The Brighton and Hove Albion manager, who celebrated his side’s first league win since August against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday, will have to decide whether to recall loan signing Ali Al-Habsi or stick with Christian Walton in goal. The 18-year-old kept a clean sheet and was named man of the match on what was his first league appearance for the Seagulls having previously impressed on his debut away to Spurs in the Capital One Cup. Al-Habsi, however, is the more experienced ‘keeper and was put straight into the team following his arrival from Wigan despite Walton’s encouraging performance at White Hart Lane. Who he picks will have a knock-on effect on the rest of his selection. League rules state Championship clubs can only select five loan players in their match day squads. If Al-Habsi is selected it leaves room for four more, meaning one of the Albion’s loan signings will be forced to miss out. Should Walton start then AlHabsi could perhaps not even make the bench, with Casper Ankergren used as back-up. That would allow all of Gary Gardner, Greg Halford, Joao Teixeira, Elliott Bennett and Joe Bennett to be included in the 18. Who to leave out if Al-Habsi does make the squad will be a

difficult decision for Hyypiä. Joe Bennett is an almost guaranteed starter, while Elliott Bennett should start. Halford, who was signed on a shortterm deal earlier this week from Nottingham Forest, should make the bench as versatile cover meaning it would be a straight choice between Teixeira and Gardner. Both performed well against Wigan, with Gardner scoring the winner and Teixeira looking more comfortable in the space afforded by Hyypiä’s slightlychanged formation. Hyypiä appeared to adjust his favoured 4231 to a more rigid 4411, with Sam Baldock looking far happier in a central striking role and the width coming from Kazenga Lua Lua and Elliott Bennett rather than the fullbacks.

Albion Team News Likely line-up: Al-Habsi/Walton, Calderon, Dunk, Greer, J. Bennett, Holla, Forster-Caskey, Lua Lua, E. Bennett, Gardner, Baldock. Likely subs: Walton/Ankergren, Halford, Ince, McCourt, Colunga, Mackail-Smith, O’Grady/Teixeira.

Second-guessing Hyypiä’s selection remains a difficult task but the manager must be tempted to retain at least the formation from the victory over Wigan, if not the exact personnel. Blackburn travel south on a strong run of form, with three wins and a draw from their last four games, including victories over Nottingham Forest and Reading. Their chief goal threat will surely come from Rudy Gestede who, with nine league goals to his name already this campaign, is one of the division’s in-form goal-getters. Former Brighton loan player Craig Conway may have to make do with a place on the bench with Ben Marshall, who has six goals and three assists to his name, likely to be fit to face the Seagulls.

It’s nice to win again. It’s an important one for the whole group: the players, the coaching staff, the whole club and the fans. "The way it came wasn't the best this season but I'm happy that I didn't have to say we played well but didn't get points. "Everyone concentrated on their job on the pitch and we came out as winners. Now we need to carry that into the next game which is coming up quickly on Saturday and we need to be ready for that. "Clean sheets are important and I want to keep a clean sheet in every game, but of course football is about other things as well as defending. "When we have to defend we need to be very focussed on defending; when we get the ball we should be able to play the football that we know we can. The balance of finding both is very important."

Footballing clichés suggest managers are best-advised to turn to their most-experienced players when struggling for form but Brighton and Hove Albion registered their first league win since August with the youngest starting 11 of the Amex era. Sami Hyypiä’s starting line-up on Tuesday had an average age of just 24 years and 303 days. Club historian Tim Carder confirmed that is the lowest since the club moved to the Amex in 2011 and the youngest for a league game since the Albion’s last game at Withdean against Huddersfield Town back in April 2011. Just two of the starting team were older than 30 – with club captain Gordon Greer 33 and fans’ favourite Inigo Calderon 32. Six of the team which began the game against Wigan Athletic were 23 or under: Lewis Dunk (22); Joao

Sam Baldock opened his Albion account in the recent game with Bournemouth and followed it up with an encouraging performance in the midweek win over Wigan. The striker, who was the League One top goalscorer last season with 24 strikes, looked happier in the slightly adjusted formation employed last time out. He remains a goal threat despite a frustrating opening to his Albion career.

Teixeira (21); Jake Forster-Caskey (20); Gary Gardner (22); Kazenga Lua Lua (23) and Christian Walton (18). And another relative youngster, Rohan Ince (21) was introduced as a late substitute and, were he not suffering from a long-term injury, 20-year-old Solly March would surely be involved in first team action on a regular basis. While Gardner and Teixeira are both currently on loan at the Amex, the Albion’s other young players are not only holding their place in the current squad but offering a good example to those currently in the club’s development squads. Since the club’s new state-ofthe-art training complex was categorised as one of the best in the country, the Albion’s younger squads have been competing with some of the biggest clubs in football. The under-18s have been enjoying a particularly encouraging start to the season. In recent weeks they have beaten

@johnnycburger

Straight from the commentary box We all know them. Some people love them. Some people hate them. Are they the life and soul or just slightly annoying? It’s the wacky mate, a bit off the wall. In football it is often the goalkeeper who is the joker in the pack. If you look back over the years, there have been some right royal characters. Bruce Grobbelaar and his wobbly knees. Rene Higuita – remember his back flip? However, as you leaf through the history books (or more to the point click on the internet page), for every Grobbelaar there is a more sensible, or dare I say sensitive, soul. A Pat Jennings or a Phil Parkes? In the aftermath of

their counterparts from Aston Villa and Southampton and raised-eyebrows with a 5-1 away win at Spurs and beaten Chelsea 2-1 at home. One player who has made the step-up from development squad to first team in recent weeks is Brighton’s England under-20 international goalie Christian Walton. The stopper made an encouraging first team debut in the Capital One Cup defeat to Tottenham and followed it up with an impressive display in his league debut against Wigan this week. The 18-year-old has received widespread praise for his man of the match performance – not least from his manager. Hyypiä told the club’s official website: “He has done well; he is calm and that is what you need to be as a goalkeeper.” Fans will be hoping he is just the latest of many to progress from youth set up to first team.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s long-awaited win against Wigan, manager Sami Hyypiä assessed the home debut of Christian Walton. A clean sheet wasn’t bad for starters. As the questions mounted up, he also paid tribute to the 18-yearold’s ‘calm’ nature. By all accounts he is a well-grounded individual. Credit must also go to the management for offering the opportunity at such a young age. He has certainly risen to the occasion at White Hart Lane and the Amex. It is understandable that the club has brought in the experienced Ali Al- Habsi after the injury to David Stockdale but I was impressed by Walton’s all-round game. He came for crosses

(big bug-bear for my summarisers), he made saves from short and long range and his kicking has so far been effective. In every team, football or otherwise, a mix of character is essential for success. Each group must have its leader, its planner, its workers and those with special powers to make a difference. You could argue that the current Seagulls side doesn’t have all those elements but it appears to me that Walton has all the attributes to fill a key role in the future. The emergence of Lewis Dunk and Jake Forster-Caskey is a boost and it would appear supporters can rest assured Walton will follow suit.
