RECORD NUMBER OF £1m HOUSES Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy It may perhaps come as no surprise. In a year characterised by sharplyincreasing house prices in Brighton and Hove, a record number of properties have sold for £1 million or more. About this time last year, we reported that Land Registry data showed a total of 35 £1million-plus properties changed hands, equalling the previous annual record set in the whole of 2012. Their aggregate value

Rush for Arsenal cup tickets begins as Albion prepare for record crowd Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion

was £47.9m. Today, we can reveal that 60 properties valued at £1 million or more were bought and sold in the first 11 months of last year. Their aggregate value was £88,651,500. For that, you could buy more than 255 homes at the average price of £346,987. Let's repeat that: for the price of the 60 most expensive homes in our city, you could buy 255 homes of average value. There's more. Research by Brighton & Hove Independent has revealed only eight of the 60

properties that sold for £1 million or more were in the highest council tax band, Band H; 38 were in the secondhighest band, Band G. With much of the national political discourse about Labour's "mansion tax" on homes worth more than £2 million, the figures are revealing. It is estimated 80% of revenue from the so-called mansion tax will come from London properties. In Brighton and Hove, only three homes sold for more than £2 million. For the most expensive homes in 2014, see page 31

They are the hottest tickets in the city - and they go on sale today (Friday). Brighton and Hove Albion fans can buy tickets to the FA Cup home tie against Arsenal after they go on sale to season-ticket-holders from 10am. The game - which takes place on Sunday, January 25, with a 4pm kick-off - could see a record crowd of more than 30,000 at the American Express Community Stadium. Season-ticket-holders - of which the Albion has about 21,000 - have a priority window during which to secure their seats.

For those who do not have a season ticket, or Bronze or Young Seagulls Plus memberships, the allimportant date is Monday, January 19, when any remaining tickets will be put on general sale. The match will be shown live on BT Sport, meaning the Albion will receive a £144,000 fee from the broadcast company. If they shock the current cup-holders they will get a further £90,000 in prize money. Gate receipts are shared between both clubs, but a bumper crowd will ensure a hugelywelcome payday as new manager Chris Hughton prepares his first forays into the transfer market. Fleet of miniature buses gets overhaul to deliver books to children in Mile Oak

A Brighton and Hove bus is being put into service to deliver books to children at Mile Oak Primary School The miniature wooden bus is one of a fleet of four originally created by Peter Coleman, a friend of the school. It has been renovated for the school by engineers with Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company. As part of its revamp it has been painted in the company's livery - and given working lights and a display board. Another is being named after Mr Coleman, who died in 2011. Two of the buses will be presented to the school today (Friday) at a celebratory event attended by Mr Coleman’s widow, Anne, by representatives of the bus company, and by Michaela Morgan, an author and the school's reading patron.

Older People's Council faces the axe The organisation that seeks to represent older people in Brighton and Hove faces closure because of proposed funding cuts by the city council. Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal the threat to the Older People's Council (OPC) has sparked widespread anger. Council representatives said the proposal came as "a complete surprise". In a statement, they said: "We believe that this is extremely disrespectful towards volunteers, many of whom have been working for the interests of older people within the City for many years." OPC officers claim that the costs of elections to the council - put as high as £40,000 - are

"grossly overstated". They state: "A further figure is quoted of £9,000, which would appear to be an estimate of the time officers spend over a year on our administration. This will not be a saving as this figure is already earmarked for our proposed replacement a non-defined, non-elected 'consultative” forum'." The officers say that older people need the council more than ever: "It would seem to us that there is a real need at such a difficult time for an independent voice for older people and that the proposals do not meet the needs of older people for independent representation of their views directly to councillors and council officers."

One Man, Two Guvnors = Big Hit The Theatre Royal is celebrating one of its most successful Christmas seasons ever. Almost 18,000 people saw the theatre’s Christmas show, One Man, Two Guvnors throughout the recent three week run, which ended last weekend. Over a third of the audience were attending the theatre for the first time. One Man, Two Guvnors has continued Theatre Royal Brighton’s tradition of staging a top West End show at Christmas.

1966 | Sunday, January 9 Fire swept through Hove Town Hall, destroying the Great Hall, the council chamber, and the banqueting hall. The magistrates’ court room – which was temporarily housed in the new police building in Holland Road – was unusable, civic records were lost, and the clock tower was badly damaged. A passer-by raised the alarm just after 3am and firemen discovered the Great Hall alight. A few hours earlier, 500 revellers were dancing the night away. The three-storey building, constructed in 1882, saw flames shooting 150 feet into the dark night sky. Two hundred firemen rescued a family from a top-floor flat, while the mayor’s secretary ran into the building and saved the mayor’s chain.

Stanmer Park is a gateway into South Downs National Park

Friday, January 9 2015 Brighton & Hove Independent 5

Stanmer House was built for the Pelham family in 1722

Stanmer Park is in line for £4m funding to be one of city's greatest attractions Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy A total of more than £4 million has been earmarked to restore Stanmer Park. The first step - a development grant of £291,000 - has been formally announced by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund. The money comes from the "Parks for People" scheme run jointly by the two funds; it will be matched by Brighton and Hove City Council and the South Downs National Park Authority. Most importantly, it means the council can now develop detailed plans to support its bid for about £4 million to restore Stanmer’s historic landscape and buildings. The HLF and Big Lottery have confirmed they have earmarked the necessary funds for the project. The Stanmer Park and Estate Restoration Project aims at restoring the park’s landscape, and Grade II listed buildings, protect natural features, and safeguard its rare landscapes. Councillor Pete West, chair of the environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “It’s fantastic news. Stanmer

Park is extremely well loved and has the potential to become an important gateway encouraging people from Brighton and Hove to explore and appreciate their local countryside and our biosphere. He added: “Stanmer Park has the potential to become one of the greatest attractions in the city.” Trevor Beattie, chief executive for the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “This is the first step in restoring Stanmer to its former glory as a major gateway into the South Downs National Park, which is easy to reach by train, bus and safe offroad cycle routes." A separate bid of £6 million was submitted in the summer for a Heritage Grant to make improvements and restorations of the Home Farm complex buildings. Results from this bid will be known next month. The bids include input from local organisations, residents and park visitors. More than 2,500 people took part in the two-year consultation. Restoration will provide training opportunities for around 100 volunteers, apprenticeship opportunities for local people, and facilities for Plumpton Agricultural College to train students.

Factfile ■ At

485 hectares, Stanmer Park accounts for a third of all the parks and garden space in Brighton and Hove. ■ Around

half a million people visit Stanmer Park every year, and that could rise to 800,000 following the restoration work. Records of a settlement at Stanmer date back to Saxon times, During the 18th century, an estate was created for the Pelham family, with Stanmer House, built in 1722, at the centre. The park landscape was developed in the style of Lancelot "Capability" Brown. ■

The farmstead has 18 agricultural buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and there is an 18th-century walled garden to the west of the village. ■

During the Second World War Stanmer Park was used to provide billeting and firing ranges for a Canadian regiment. In 1947 Brighton Corporation bought the estate and opened the park to the public in 1953. ■

Once the walled garden is enhanced, there would be the potential to grow and produce food on site, and there are also plans to restore one of the original glass houses. ■

Preston Park will be the epicentre of the battle between the Green Party and the Labour Party when it comes to the city council elections on May 7. Noticeably, no other party has yet selected candidates here. Two of Labour's most experienced and most left-leaning - councillors lost their seats here in 2011. Kevin Allen is determined to fulfil his ambitions to be elected to the seat he lost last time around - although Juliet McCaffery, Mr Allen's erstwhile colleague in Preston Park, has been forced to try her luck in neighbouring Withdean. Neil Schofield, an intelligent and articulate blogger, is a former Green Party member - who has chosen to stand here rather than in his home ward of Patcham. In a largely-affluent ward, where the branch party has lost a lot of its former momentum, Julie Cattell is the other Labour candidate. For the Greens, Councillor Leo Littman is the only Green councillor standing again and is sure to give Labour a run for its money. The choice of Rob Shepherd, the influential and likeable spokesperson for Brighton and Hove Green Party, shows his party recognise the importance of the seat. Georgina Turner is a programme officer for the Climate Parliament, which describes itself as "an international cross-party network of legislators, dedicated to preventing climate change and promoting renewable energy". For the most up-to-date list of the 122 candidates so far selected or declared for the Brighton and Hove City Council elections, see page 23.

Royal Sussex County Hospital A&E consultant lambasts prime minister

Kings Road | Brighton | East Sussex BN1 2FU | UK ©2014 Hilton Worldwide

Rob Galloway, a senior consultant who works in the A&E department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, has sent an open letter to David Cameron, criticising government rhetoric about the NHS crisis. Mr Galloway published the

letter on Facebook, accusing the prime minister of downplaying the realities NHS workers are facing - with staff regularly left in tears and patients dying in corridors. He said Mr Cameron had “lied” - an accusation he later revised -

about investing in the NHS and invited politicians to witness A&E staff “buckling under the strain”. To read Mr Galloway's letter to David Cameron in full, visit: www. brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk.

Museum to charge £5 to non-resident visitors

The Black Project

Frank le Duc @BHcitynews Brighton Museum is to charge non-residents £5 admission in a bid to help plug the council’s budget gap - even though visitor numbers are likely to be halved as a result. The new charge will come into force from May 1 and is expected to net Brighton and Hove City Council £200,000. A report to the council’s economic development and culture committee, which meets on Thursday (January 15), says: “In support of the 2015/16 budget strategy and the need to deliver savings, it is proposed to introduce admission charges for the first time to Brighton Museum. A full-year saving of £200,000 has been proposed.” It adds: “It is anticipated … museum visitor numbers will drop by 50% following the introduction of admission charges.” As with the Pavilion, concessions will be available for pensioners, disabled people, and those on low incomes; a joint ticket covering admission to the

museum and Pavilion will be introduced. The report also details increases in charges across the council’s leisure facilities. Free use of library computers will also be limited to one hour, with a £1 an hour charge thereafter. A proposed charge for the popular Baby Boogie sessions at the city’s libraries has been scrapped, and replaced with a call for donations at a suggested

rate of £1 per child. Child’s craft activities, however, will be charged at a minimum of £1 per participant, and book groups will have to stump up £30 a year. Beach hut charges will also increase by 50% over the next two years, which for the most expensive huts in Hove will take the annual charge from £928.86 in 2014/15 to £1,393.29 in 2016/17. In Saltdean and Rottingdean, the annual charge will rise from £541.25 to £811.88.

This was the winner of the First Graphic Novel Competition and I quite see why. The storytelling is compulsive reading, but then I am also a complete sucker when it comes to lists in books. I love them: shopping lists, lists of presents received for birthdays, lists of what’s in someone’s fridge, lists of a husband's shortcomings. They all build up a perfect sense of time and place and people. This poignant and funny book is no exception. A boy decides to build a girlfriend. Well, a series of girlfriends really, as prototype after prototype get destroyed (bonfire night, mice, and other disasters). He starts off with the building of Laura, who has the only thing that he has to spend money on (a rather beautiful pair of women’s

Railways

Fare protest Demonstrators gathered at Brighton Station to protest about the latest rail fare rises. Fares increased by 2.5% across the United Kingdom, causing widespread anger among commuters. Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, attended the protest on Monday, campaigning for public ownership of the railway services. Nancy Platts, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown, called for a simplified ticket system and strict caps on fares. Rail firms said the rises are the lowest fare increases in five years.

A Christmas tree recycling site was set on fire in an arson attack. Brighton and Hove City Council set up 23 recycling sites across the city to enable residents to dispose of their Christmas trees, which are then taken to be composted and resold as soil conditioner. Firefighters were called to Hangleton Park at 5.30 pm on Monday after a group of children set fire to the recycling drop-off point.

A pile of clothes on Brighton beach prompted a search by the emergency services. Sussex Police said: “Police and coastguards have been searching the beach near Duke's Mound, Madeira Drive, Brighton, after a member of the public found a quantity of abandoned clothing there shortly after 11am. Items included an XXL Superdry jacket with an orange lining, a pair of 34in-waist black George-brand trousers and a large blue Hollister t-shirt.” Police appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious or who has information that may help trace the owner of the clothing.

Emergency departments in Sussex hospitals are failing to meet four-hour treatment targets. The NHS has been under pressure throughout the country, with many hospitals declaring “serious incidents”. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust (BSUH) told patients to stay away from A&E after a surge in patient numbers. The BSUH fell well below the national average, seeing just 79.5% of patients within the four-hour target.

The city council has told a woman to remove security cameras from her councilowned flat in Hollingdean. The woman put up the the CCTV cameras because of burglary concerns in the Roedale Road area; the council, however, issued a warning saying that they breached the privacy of other residents and had to be removed. The woman is refusing to take down the security cameras, despite council threats to remove them and invoice her for the cost.

Brighton Wheel

BHT (Brighton Housing Trust) has thanked donors for helping surpass the £20,000 target to help the homeless. BHT's Christmas appeal aimed to raise awareness and funds for those without shelter over the Christmas and New Year. Corporate partnerships, online campaigns, and other events helped raise the money that will help the First Base Day Centre and support those who are vulnerable. Donations can be made by telephoning Liz Davies on 01273 645425.

The Brighton Wheel has been shut down for the month and stripped of all its pods. The seaside attraction on Madeira Drive will be out of action while it undergoes general maintenance. It will be back up and running next month.

Our exquisite designs and enthusiasm for our products and service, makes us the first choice for storage solutions!

Brighton & Hove Independent's "Pavements for Pedestrians" campaign is a welcome one. Our population is growing, but most of our streets and pavements have remained unchanged for more than 100 years, making the city centre particularly pressured. While it is not all bad, with much of the North Laine and Old Town areas dominated by pedestrians in the traffic-calmed streets, we are still not a properly liveable city, where everyone from eight to 80 can safely and comfortably get about and with walking a pleasure Fetch the law? I couldn’t agree more with the sentiments of Graham Chainey’s article (page 5, January 2) on pavement clutter in the city centre - and indeed in other shopping areas across the city. May I make one point, and then suggest the debate be extended? The point is that, in some instances, what we consider to be a public pavement area is in fact privately-owned by the adjoining business. They are completely within their rights if they put tables or chairs and so on outside their premises on the pavement when this is so. The debate extension concerns pavements, mainly in residential areas, where overgrown bushes have spread over the fence and now block the pavement. As pavements away from the city centre are usually narrower to begin with, this can be a real problem for the partly-sighted at all times - and for us all when it is dark. Can concern be expressed about all obstructed pavements in the city and not just those in the centre? Alan Linham

Wonderful to see the headline in Brighton & Hove Independent (page one, January 2). I have written many letters to MPs and councillors on this subject, but no action is ever taken. If the authorities can tow away illegally-parked cars, why can't they impound pedal cycles being ridden at speed on pavements, vehicles parked on pavements, and advertisement boards blocking pavements. Many a time, I have seen mothers having to push buggies into main roads to get round vehicles blocking the pavement. If there are double yellow lines, many drivers just park on the pavement. Please also campaign about cyclists who ignore red traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. Well done! Anthony Simmonds

PAVEMENTS FOR PEDESTRIANS An Independent View

There is a lot of discussion about traffic congestion, much of it illtempered and unhelpful - about bus lanes, cycle lanes, and thoughtless motorists. Little serious attention, however, is given to pedestrians. For those of us who are ablebodied, young and fit, the hustle and bustle of our city has a certain excitement as we rush along our way. We never really notice the obstacles that lie in wait for the frail, the elderly, and those with disabilities. Brighton & Hove Independent is making a New Year's resolution: to speak out on behalf of citizens who choose to walk on pavements. And against those who thoughtlessly

cycle - or park - on them. As Graham Chainey makes clear in his brilliant column on page 5, our pavements are cluttered with all manner of obstructions and distractions - including countless tables and chairs essential to our "café culture". And even more essential to people who want nicotine with their caffeine. Let's all try to make 2015 the year when pedestrians reclaim what is rightfully theirs: the pavements.

Medina House: The treasurable remnant of great bathing tradition Graham Chainey

Mahomed’s Baths were opened in 1786 on what became the site of the Queen’s Hotel

It is a quaint, Dutch-gabled survival in a stretch of seafront dominated by big bland blocks. Although it is not listed, English Heritage describe it as “a characterful building that embodies historical significance”. It is yet another in the lamentable catalogue of heritage assets left to rot. Medina House,in King’s Esplanade, Hove, adjoining Marrocco’s restaurant, is all that remains of a sea-water bathing complex, Medina Baths, dating from 1894. The larger section, to the west, which included a men’s bath, was demolished in 1976, but the smaller women’s section, tenanted latterly by a diamond-cutting business, managed to hang on. Hove Borough Council sold it in 1997 to a developer, Sirus Taghan, who demolished the actual bathhouse, leaving its colourful tilework exposed to the elements. He also let squatters and caravandwellers live on the premises for many years. He has proposed various schemes for the site, including an 18-storey tower in 2002, and one that resembled a toppling pile of plates in 2006. Just before Christmas, fire broke out, prompting renewed calls for the building to be compulsorily purchased and a more appropriate use - whether as community centre, museum, or housing - to be found. Historically, it is the final modest survivor of a long tradition of sea-water and Turkish bathing establishments, going back to the very origins of Brighton’s fashionable success. Dr Richard Russell, with his sea-bathing premises, Russell House, sited where the Royal Albion now stands, began the whole thing in 1753. His disciple Dr John Awsiter’s baths, opened in 1769 in Pool Valley - later becoming Wood’s Original Hot and Cold Sea-water Baths, and later still Creak’s Baths - survived until 1861. The most famous of all, Mahomed’s Baths, were opened in 1786 by the Indian Sake Deen Mahomed and his Irish wife. This stood on the site of the later Queen’s Hotel, and the Turkish treatment included lying in a sort of flannel tent that had inside sleeves attached for the masseuse. Mahomed claimed to alleviate such ailments as asthma, rheumatism, sciatica, and lumbago; his vestibule was hung with the “crutches, spinestretchers, leg-irons, head-strainers, bump-dressers and club-foot

reformers” of those allegedly cured. Appointed “shampooing surgeon” to George IV, his duties included superintending the Pavilion’s royal bathroom, with its marble tubs, its giant bottles of perfume, its pulley-hoist for lowering the obese monarch into the water. Mahomed’s son continued the business into the 1870s. A rival enterprise, Molineux’s Shampooing Baths, opened nearby in 1825. Williams’s Royal Hot and Cold Baths, which opened in 1803 in Old Steine, were said “scarcely to be equalled in Europe”. Nathan Smith’s Artillery Baths, near the present Grand Hotel, established in 1813, were famed for their airpump treatment for gout. The domed premises of Lamprell’s Baths, established in 1823 at the bottom of East Street, were for years a seafront landmark. They became better known later as Brill’s Baths. In 1862, Charles Brill built a ladies’ baths on the site of the old Awsiter’s Baths, which was claimed to be the only sea-water swimming-bath for ladies in Europe and was patronised by royalty. An even larger one for men, said to be the largest circular bath in Europe, followed in East Street in 1870; it had a balcony for 400 spectators, medical douche and vapour baths, readingroom, billiards-room and barber’s shop. It survived until 1929. Others included the Brighton Turkish Bath – a grand Moorish structure, “resplendent with crimson and gilt, encaustic and terracotta”, built in West Street in 1868 – and Buggins’s Brunswick Baths in Western Street, where the sea-water was pumped by steam engine. Nothing of these survives. Medina House, with its damaged but treasurable fittings, is all we have. Graham Chainey is a freelance writer living in Brighton and Hove

Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. This week is Fern and Wilson... www.dogtrust.org.uk

Factfile “Fern is a seven-year-old female Beagle and Wilson is a six-year-old male Beagle. They have a close bond so need to be rehomed together. Both are very sweet with people, Wilson is certainly more outgoing and enjoys a fuss, Fern would prefer to be in the background until she feels more comfortable. "Although they are both used to living with multiple Beagles, they can be a little unsure meeting new dogs. Their socialisation with new dogs at the centre is going really well and just needs to be done gradually on their terms. As they have not lived in a normal home environment, they need owners who understand they’ll take time to settle into their new home and may need some guidance with housetraining.”

Some dogs are just more accident – or trouble - prone than others and this would include my own lovely “special needs” Staffy, Romeo, who is as greedy and food fixated as any average Labrador. On Christmas morning, my dear Romeo managed to polish off my daughter’s 30cm chocolate Santa figure in less than four unguarded minutes, leaving only the almost completely intact plastic box as humble proof of his perfected “no hands” talent! Not a trace of chocolate anywhere – not even on him – and he is white. Even my teenage daughter

would have left more evidence had she managed to get to it first. The fortune was that Santa was made up of all milk/white chocolate so the main content is sugar with no noteworthy content of Theobromine, which is the dangerous stuff found in dark chocolate. Help look for leaks this winter Southern Water has ramped up its leak detection work this winter – and thanks the 30,000 customers who have helped it maintain one of the lowest levels of leakage of the UK’s water and wastewater companies. In 2014, about 29,200 people called the company’s freephone Leakline including customers from Brighton. Cold weather can take its toll on water mains because when the ground freezes it moves and can cause pipes to crack. Southern Water has 13,600 kilometres of water mains, many in rural areas, and leaks can occur at any point, particularly over winter. This is why its leak detectors work around the clock to find them, using a combination of sophisticated acoustic equipment and traditional listening sticks to pinpoint the exact underground location. Southern Water’s Regional Leakage Manager Phil Tapping said: “Between April and September this year, we had our lowest ever leakage level for a six month period. This was, in

Freedom Leisure – which operates the Withdean Sports Complex, King Alfred, Prince Regent, Moulescoomb and Stanley Deason leisure centres on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council – now has specially trained staff qualified to offer fitness classes and gym sessions to teenagers. Freedom Leisure staff underwent rigorous training in December to enable them to work with teenagers aged 12+. Both the physical and psychological aspects of teen fitness have been learned, enabling trainers to motivate and support teenagers to achieve success. “Overweight and inactive teenagers remain a cause for concern within our society with around 15% of school leavers being classified as obese,” says Chris Lovelock, Freedom Leisure Area Manager. “There

are several reasons for this but ‘non sporty’ kids disengaging from team games and physical activity as they progress through senior school is a major factor, especially among teenage girls. “Teenagers have great scope to train and improve their cardio fitness and physique but, usually, their exercise comes in the form of sports,” says Chris. “For teens who don’t like sports, working out in the gym or doing an agespecific class will be a popular alternative. “Our staff have received specialist training to enable them to provide classes and supervised gym sessions that are both appealing and suitable for teenagers. We hope that by engaging with youngsters at an earlier age, we can encourage a healthier lifestyle among this age group.” Freedom Leisure says the

teens will be able to work out during the natural lull in their timetables between 4pm and 6pm. This means teenagers can come in after school and be finished before the evening classes start and adults come in after work. Labour: Taking power by winning 15 in 2015 Warren Morgan @warrenmorgan

Labour Group leader WARREN MORGAN sets out his party’s ambition to gain 15 more council seats in the city council elections in May. If successful, the gains would give Labour a majority on Brighton and Hove City Council. No party has had a majority of councillors on the council since 2003, when the current ward structure was established. Is doubling the number of Labour councillors a realistic target? Yes. In several recent local elections, Labour have increased their number of seats by similar amounts: in Hammersmith and Fulham in 2015, Labour gained 11 seats. In Lancashire in 2013, Labour gained 23, in Staffordshire 21. In Cardiff in 2012, Labour gained 33.

Surely Labour is third on the council? Yes, in terms of the number of current councillors. But in 2011 we finished second in almost all of the 21 wards, sometimes by very narrow margins. Overall, we won 32% of the vote citywide, more than the Tories and just 1% less than the Greens, so we are well placed to make significant gains from both. Our organisation and campaigning is vastly improved on 2011. Which wards are you targeting? The local elections are on the same day as the general election, in which we are also aiming to win all three parliamentary seats. So we are campaigning for every Labour vote in every ward across the city. Historically, Labour supporters vote in greater numbers on general election day than they do in local elections. So we may win seats in wards where we might not normally be in contention. Clearly, those with smaller Green or Conservative majorities are more likely to be Labour gains.

ELECTIONS 2015

So are you targeting Green-held or Conservative-held wards? Both. We expect to gain between five and 10 seats from both parties. The Green vote is collapsing, due to their running of the council, and they are struggling to find candidates. And the Conservatives have dwindling numbers of activists to support their campaigns, only money. They are losing significant support to UKIP. The Greens are effectively abandoning anything outside of Caroline Lucas’s Brighton Pavilion constituency. Why 15 in 15? We need a majority. The city council faces incredibly difficult decisions as its finances are cut and social care and infrastructure challenges grow, but we have exciting major projects in the pipeline, key pledges to deliver, and ambitions for the city. Under a committee-system-council, the Tory opposition and a rump of Green councillors could and would frustrate and block everything Labour seeks to achieve.

A total of 44 Labour Party candidates have so far been selected for the city council elections on May 7

Elections 2015: How will Brighton and Hove vote? Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Today, we publish the most up-todate list of candidates currently selected or declared for the Brighton and Hove City Council elections on Thursday, May 7. So far, there are 120 candidates (for 54 seats, in 21 wards): Conservative Party, 31; Green Party, 24; Labour and Co-operative Party, 44; Liberal Democrats, 2; UKIP, 16; and Independent, 3. A careful study of the lists gives a clue to the priorities and

expectations of the various parties. Why has the Labour Party not yet selected candidates for Patcham, while the Conservative Party has? Because Patcham - while important to Labour at the general election, also on May 7 - is not at all winnable when it comes to local council elections. Why have the Conservatives not selected candidates in Preston Park (for a ward profile, see page 6)? Or in Hollingdean and Stanmer? Because these are two-horse races between the Greens and Labour. And why have only the Conservatives selected candidates

in Hove Park, while only Labour has selected candidates in East Brighton? You get the picture. As so often, elections are won and lost in a limited number of "battlefield" seats. Even in the Tony Blair/Labour landslide of 1997, only a quarter of parliamentary constituencies changed hands. Over the coming weeks and months, Brighton & Hove Independent will highlight the key wards and the key issues - while always urging all citizens to exercise their democratic rights and fulfil their democratic responsibilities.

Sometimes, it can be difficult. On Twitter, we have created a series of "lists" that enable you to follow easily the 140-character thoughts of candidates who count themselves members of the Twitterati. In total, 50 of the 120 candidates are on Twitter, with a total of more than 40,000 followers - with Labour having 28 Twitterers, with a total of about 21,000 followers. There is, of course, a lot of double-counting: you follow me, I'll follow you....you tweet me and I'll tweet you. Twitter is like that. If you are so inclined,

A23

please do visit: www. brightoandhoveindependent.co.uk. Or follow @BrightonIndy. Then you can follow all the tweets of all candidates, regardless of party or ward. Moreover, with our lists, you can follow only candidates of a particular party - or only candidates in a particular ward. Unfortunately, barely a day goes by without a party apparatchik bickiering and twittering with a fellow twitterer or bickerer of a rival party; a handful of Green and Labour candidates - a minority, thankfully - dominate what is

laughingly called "a conversation". If you think it is upsetting to be disturbed by an evening phone call from a party volunteer - or, worse, a Sunday-morning visit by a candidate on your doorstep then be prepared for an even more depressing insight into the socialmedia world of local politics by listening in to some of the tweets of some of the candidates (to be fair, of

all parties). Candidates should be warned: Brighton & Hove Independent will be publishing some of the worst – as well as some of the best - of the political tweets. More constructively, we will be publishing the policies, strategies, and thoughts of the main protagonists. (Labour: Taking power by winning 15 in 2015, see

page 21.) As Brighton & Hove Independent has repeatedly highlighted, our city is facing a crisis - a time when difficult and important decisions have to be made. Some of these decisions – for example, those to be made about next year's council budget - will be made by the current city council, on which no party has majority control.

There are 20 Green councillors, 18 Conservative councillors, 13 Labour councillors, one UKIP councillor, and two independent councillors. It is entirely possible that the council elected on May 7 will be similarly divided, leading to another minority administration that finds it difficult to push through its own agenda. This may or may not be desirable.

It may or may not be what we collectively want. On the same day, it is entirely possible that the government elected on May 7 will be either a coalition or a minority government operating on a vote-by-vote basis. Again, this may be desirable. Just one thing is certain: we can control only how we exercise our own votes - locally and nationally.

Brighton and Hove - Past and Present

Taken shortly after Black Rock Bathing Pool, an Art Deco lido, opened in 1936, this old photograph shows the pleasure this site - close to the modern-day Brighton Marina - can provide for the people of Brighton and Hove. The lido closed in 1978 and was demolished a year later; the site remains an unrecognisable, sad wasteland. (Old photograph courtesy of Step Back in Time, 36 Queen’s Road, Brighton.)

the city is our office Bonett’s

Not just another property portal Launching on 26th January, www.onthemarket.com is set to transform Brighton and Hove property searchers’ habits overnight. Over the last few years, all agents, to have any chance of being asked to sell or rent a property locally, will have been grilled by their wouldbe client: ‘are you on Rightmove?’; ‘are you on Zoopla?’, or both. That has been the status quo for far too long. There are other portals and offers out there: www.thelatest. com , www.primelocation.com , but the leading two have the lion’s share of the agents listing with them. And of course, agents pay very handsomely for the ‘privilege’. From the 26th, all that is set to change. For a start, onthemarket. com is agent owned and run, not owned by shareholders. It has been developed to support agents, not just make money out of them. Secondly, the deal is that if an agent wants to list with onthemarket.com , the contract stipulates that it can only list on one other ‘competing portal’. As a result, many agents

in Brighton and Hove are in the final throes of revoking their contracts with one or other of the main players, plus other competing portals. Around the UK, some agents are seeing this as their first step to perhaps dropping all other portals since, as it is run by agents for agents, therefore their clients, it could end up being a one-stop shop for property. The site says it will not be listing online agents’ properties as they do not offer the full high street estate agent service: accompanied viewings, sales managing and chasing, virtually house-sitting empty properties, arranging clears and cleans, facelifts, garden tidying, which many sales agents do as a matter of course, looking after a client’s interests. As online agents charge their fees upfront, they don’t have to ‘do the deal’ i.e. sell the property, to get paid: High street agents generally do. Onthemarket.com recognises this as a totally different model and is seeking to support agents who

do the full job. There is one interesting and for Bonett’s clients, useful aside: Bonett’s are members of team Association, a national property multi-listing grouping. www.teamprop.co.uk is not seen as a ‘competing portal’ as it has the function of offering the multi-listing service, so is essential for team agents to operate. It is also real-time, the most up to date property site in the UK. So, team Association expects a few independent firms to start thinking of joining to get those benefits but also to say to their sellers that their property will be offered through teamprop.co.uk and all team agents’ own sites around the UK. Time will tell how onthemarket. com will be received by the public, but from 26th January, you will find much of Brighton and Hove property listed on it. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. The Places I Eat

H.en @henrestaurant 87-88 Trafalgar St, Brighton, BN1 4ER 01273 671004

H.en is a modern and hip venue for happy and healthy chickens Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn

H.en opened in Brighton’s achinglycool North Laine area last month. Many flocked to the opening and were impressed. But how is owner Philip Ilic getting on now? And will his ethos of serving high-welfare chicken settle with the often hardto-please Brighton crowd? Located in Trafalgar Street, the first thing that struck me about H.en (which stands for "happy/healthy, eat natural") was the décor: simple, modern, and a hipster paradise. Think re-purposed, light wooden tables, drinks served in old milk bottles, artwork on peg-board walls and, overall, a welcoming, light and spacious restaurant. H.en isn’t another Nando’s, KFC, or late-night chicken-shop. This is

Coffee Chronicles by

Under the heading of "Tea" on our menu, first on the list is English Breakfast. Despite a few requests for egg, bacon, sausage, and beans, it is generally well-understood that you'll receive a cup of tea. £1.60 would certainly be a bargain fryup, but with Richmond sausages and stolen pigeon eggs, it'd probably be do-able. English Breakfast Tea is, in fact, anything but English: Assam, Ceylon, and Kenya are the most common places of origin. As Brits, we're renowned for drinking the stuff, but we're totally incapable of producing it. Same deal with coffee, chocolate, and anything else enjoyable. The term English Breakfast was coined by Americans way back in

a sit-down, table service venue and the quality of the food reflects this. H.en serve only high-welfare birds that have been reared with maximum outdoor space from Brookland Farm, Surrey. Coupled with owner and manager Philip Ilic’s vision to make H.en somewhat of a low-sugar, all-natural restaurant, it is clear that the H.en team have the customers' health in mind. The menu is minimal and simple: choose from quarter or half a chicken, chicken burger, or vegetarian alternative and a range of sides, including fries, corn on the cob, and salad - all made in-house. Reasonably-priced, a quarter of chicken with two sides comes to £7.45 and, if you want to gorge on half a bird, that still comes in at an affordable £9.95. H.en is also open for brunch, serving gluten-free waffles with a range of toppings, including chocolate fudge, berry colonial times. Whenever that was. Although we Brits can't take the credit for the name or the cultivation of our popular morning cuppa, we can claim its invention. In 1869, a tea merchant in New York created a new blend which became our iconic English Breakfast. The tea merchant was an English immigrant named Richard Davies. His blend was copied, improved and sold to the masses. These days, Richard Davies is almost entirely forgotten, and Mr Tetley, pyramid bags, and a fat bloke with a sock monkey seem more important to us than the origins of our tea blend. compote and maple syrup. I chose the quarter chicken with sides of sweet potato fries and grilled halloumi. Fellow diner, Laura Evans, opted for the chicken burger (£6.95). Dry-January meant sipping on a glass of refreshing and fruity homemade pink lemonade; H.en is, however, fully licensed and serves a good selection of craft beers. Positives first: the chicken. Oh my! What a wonderfully tender and sublime piece of meat! Grilled lightly, the bird was coated in lemon and fresh herbs. The skin eased away from the juicy flesh and was wickedly enjoyable. The quality of the meat was very good and put to shame many other chicken outlets; no preservatives, synthetics, or nasties in this bird. And you could really tell. Torn at with my bare hands, dunked and dipped in a pool of tangy and spicy sauce, the chicken was a prominent highlight

of our meal. Laura also enjoyed her chicken burger, proclaiming it the ideal combination of naughtiness, while also still feeling vaguely healthy. The sweet potato fries doused in rosemary were okay, although a little too crispy. The two pieces of halloumi looked somewhat sad on my plate and were under-cooked. I cursed myself for not ordering salad as a side, as I’d heard good things about these from the launch event. The presentation also irked me; it felt somewhat rushed and unplanned, as though it were

acceptable to throw everything onto a plate and hope for the best. H.en is a cool restaurant. There is no doubt about that. It serves good chicken, decent beers and waffles. What more can a Brighton crowd want in 2015? And with some tweaks to the menu and other refinements, it could easily become another popular Brighton hangout for the hipster generation and beyond. I don’t know about you, but my basket fills up with eucalyptus essential oil, echinacea tinctures, and all manner of supplements at this time of year. For me, this has more to do with fending off the winter snivels than any post-festive detoxing although I have those options to explore later this month. We all plan to, then conveniently forget; so I will be your conscience this time around. It has to be said that I haven’t been off work or laid-up at all since I supplemented my admittedly booze-fuelled pescatarian dietary habits with a stack of vitamins and minerals. Solaray is my go-to brand. Solaray began in 1973 as a pioneer in formulating and marketing blended herbal products with complementary effects. They focus on encapsulated products for rapid disintegration and easy swallowing. Their rainbow packaging on white is currently available in more than 60 countries.

I indulge in hyaluronic acid, which is a component in the connective tissue that fills the spaces between cells of the skin and other tissues; it is a major ingredient of the synovial fluid that lubricates and cushions the joints. I consider this to be a triple winner, as it helps my eyes and complexion, plus my bad knee all at the same time (£19.99 for 30 capsules at 20mg: www.solaray.co.uk). The whole natural health industry is on its guard in Britain. The prospect of political upheaval, plus renewed regulatory activity in Brussels, lead to stark warnings from the Consumers for Health Choice (CHC) parliamentary reception at the House of Commons last month. The annual bash was co-hosted by Kate Hoey, the Labour MP, and Marcus Jones, the Conservative MP, and sponsored by Holland & Barrett. Michael Peet, chair of CHC, says that the focus for 2015 will continue to be the setting of maximum levels for vitamins and

minerals. Vytenis Andriukaitis, the European Commission’s health commissioner, and an influx of MEPs are creating fresh challenges for this sector. Mr Jones said; “I think it’s completely absurd that that the European Commission can come forward with, and regulate, something that is safe and wellestablished in our country. If products do not cause harm, I can see no reason why European, or any other, legislative bodies have any good reason to create further legislation.” For once, I seem to have agreed with the blue side. I really must keep taking the pills.

Tibbons is honing a new trait and it’s one I envy: the art of going up to a stranger and making a friend of them. As someone who has commuted regularly alongside the same handful of faces week in, week out for more than four years now, without ever uttering a word to them, I can only marvel at his ability. If Tibbons were a commuter, then doubtless he’d be on firstname terms with all of his fellowpassengers and happy to meet them for a drink at the weekend.

But it doesn’t work like that in the grown-up world, does it? I’ve said before that I think we can learn a lot from toddlers and I think it bears repeating. There are limits, of course, I’m not suggesting I should (or want to) approach a stranger at the swimming pool and start a game of splash with them, or to go up to someone in a café and pretend I’m a tiger (though that one might be quite fun). But when does it stop being okay to approach a stranger? I’m sure not everyone is as buttoned up as I am, but a lot of us

seem to be rather restrained with one another. And yet I love it when I have a nice chat with someone new, often after Tibbons has broken the ice. From playing peek-a-boo with strangers on the bus and giving them his most winning smile to sharing his prized tiger toys with someone he meets out and about, Tibbons’s interactions with others remind me that the world can actually be quite a friendly place and I for one hope that he doesn’t lose his effortless charm and friendship-making abilities any time soon.

Match preview: Charlton Athletic v Brighton and Hove Albion

Albion Chris Hughton statistics

Albion looking for ‘‘ more capital gains

Albion Manager

League position

(Speaking after win at Brentford)

Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Three thousand Seagulls fans will pack into the away end at Charlton Athletic tomorrow (Saturday) as the Albion away army mobilises for another incursion into the capital hoping their Brighton heroes can plunder another win. Brighton head to Charlton on the back of a pair of moraleboosting away wins – both in London and both by two goals to nil. Around 3,500 fans – some in Craven Cottage’s neutral section after the away end sold out – roared Brighton onto victory against Fulham under Nathan Jones temporary management, and another away-end sell-out crowd, this time of 1,600, saw Chris Hughton mastermind a 2-0 FA Cup win at high-flying Brentford. A combined away following of more than 8,000 fans for a team slumming it at the wrong end of the Championship table is certainly impressive. Hughton then, certainly has the enthusiastic backing of supporters as he begins his mission to address the Seagulls poor league position and stabilise the club going forward. Charlton looked a solid outfit when they visited the Amex earlier in the season but have now gone eight league and cup games without registering a win. They haven’t won at home since beating Bolton back on October 21 but, overall, have a fairly decent record on their own patch. A 1-0 defeat by Ipswich Town is their only home

loss in the league at the Valley but, like Brighton, drawing has been an issue. The Addicks have drawn seven of their 12 home league games this campaign. Their chief threat will come from Igor Vetokele, their eightgoal top scorer. The Angolan international is available for Charlton after his country missed out on qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations and he certainly posed Brighton numerous problems the last time the teams met. Lewis Dunk and Gordon Greer, who returned from his spell on the sidelines against Brentford, will likely be tasked with keeping the forward quiet. Charlton have boosted their squad this week with the signings of former Celtic striker Tony Watt from Standard Liege and Serbia Under-21 international goalkeeper

Albion team news Likely line-up: Stockdale, Calderon, Dunk, Greer, J. Bennett, Holla, Ince, Teixeira, Colunga, March, Mackail-Smith.

Likely substitutes: Walton, Hughes, Bruno, Halford, ForsterCaskey, Baldock, O’Grady.

Opponent's position

ST

It was very important for the team to do well in the FA Cup and you'd like to think it will breed that bit of confidence. "When you're in the league position we are, then of course the initial aim is to make life a bit more comfortable, but at the moment it’s very difficult to gauge how a season can go because of the nature of this league. "I'm realistic about where we are at the moment and there are a lot of good teams around us so first and foremost it's about starting to creep up that league. "The two centre halves (Dunk and Greer) are very experienced players and I've seen an awful lot of them, but we had a very young midfield that had to dig in and be very disciplined at times and certainly I was delighted to see that from them.”

Marko Dmitrovic from Ujpest FC. Brighton’s January recruitment remains purely Greg Halford although Hughton and the club’s chief executive Paul Barber have spoken this week of their determination to make quality additions to the Seagulls squad. Bruno, having completed his three-match ban, is back in contention while Jake ForsterCaskey, Joe Bennett and Adrian Colunga could return to the match day squad. Chris O’Grady, who has been in impressive form from the Brighton bench in the team’s last two games, continues to be linked with a move to Sheffield United but Albion fans will be hoping he is given a few more opportunities to prove his worth. Craig Mackail-Smith should continue as centre forward.

JOĂO TEIXEIRA

It has been an amazing few weeks at the Albion that's for sure. A brief stint for Nathan Jones at the helm and a good win at Fulham. David Burke has left while Chris Hughton has arrived immediately picking up his first win in charge at Brentford. Loanees have returned to their parent clubs while Greg Halford has committed to the club until the end of the season. After the barnstorming end to the FA Cup tie at Griffin Park all the talk was of Chris O'Grady who came off the bench to score the Seagulls second goal. It has certainly been an eventful season for the striker as well as the club. Struggling initially at the Amex then out on loan at Sheffield United he came back with a bang.

João Teixeira arrived at the Amex with a growing reputation for flair and creativity and didn’t disappoint in his opening outings in an Albion shirt. He has recently recaptured that early form, playing in a more suitable position in front of Danny Holla and Rohan Ince. An exciting prospect on the ball, he has the talent to establish himself as the side’s creative spark.

His future is still uncertain but in an interview with Saturday Sport on BBC Sussex he gave an honest assessment. So often with all of us involved in the football the game can become allconsuming and passions run high. It is that passion and dedication that is of course the lifeblood of the sport. However, as O'Grady spoke to us, he reminded of one simple fact: Footballers are people too. He revealed his frustration and the struggle for his family who weren't sure whether he was coming or going. It was an emotive five

Tickets for Brighton and Hove Albion’s eagerly-awaited FA Cup Fourth Round match with Premier League Arsenal go on sale today (Friday). The match against the current FA Cup holders could attract a record crowd to the Amex, toppling the current highest attendance of 30,003 for the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on May 4 2013. It will almost certainly beat the 27,113 who saw Brighton run Arsenal close in the same competition back in January 2013. The game takes place on Sunday, January 25, with a 4pm kick-off and tickets will cost from £32 to £42 for adults, £24 to £30 for 65 plus, £15 to £22 for under-18s and £5 to £12 for under-10s – standard Category A pricing for Albion home games.

The Albion’s 21,000 odd season ticket holders will get the chance to buy tickets to the game from 10am this morning online and then in person from the Amex ticket office or by calling 0844 327 1901 from 2pm. Season ticket holders’ seats will be held until 9am on Tuesday, January 13. From 9am the following day Bronze members and Young Seagulls Plus members will be able to buy tickets online. From 2pm they can then buy in person or over the phone. Any remaining tickets will then go on sale to supporters with a previous purchase history from 9am on Monday, January 19 online before being made available from the ticket office or phone from 2pm. Season-ticket holders will then be given the opportunity to buy an additional two tickets per person from Tuesday, January 20 at 9am. Brighton’s North London

visitors have been given 15 per cent of the Amex capacity – around 4,500 tickets. They will be housed in two blocks of the Lower East Stand and the lion’s share of the South Stand up to and including block S1F. Any season ticket holders in the East Stand area taken by Arsenal will be offered alternative seats elsewhere at family area prices. Anyone who misses out on tickets or who cannot make it to the Amex can watch the game live on BT Sport. The television channel, sniffing a potential upset, has selected the Albion game for live coverage. If the match finishes all-square the two teams will meet against at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on February 4. The Albion’s league match with Ipswich Town, which was due to take place on the Saturday, has been moved forward to Wednesday, January 21, with a 7.45pm kick-off at the Amex.
