To be clear, Mr Murdoch: BRIGHTON & HOVE the correct decision is Independent SAYS No More Page 3! Now! What a booby!
Carmel Maria Offord
Over the last 44 years, The Sun has portrayed women on Page 3 as sexual objects, solely for men's pleasure. Available and read in public places for all to see. This feature has evolved within a culture where sexual harassment and assault is now commonplace. The culture I grew up in and the culture that persists in schools, nightclubs, and workplaces across the country is fuelled by the way men see women and how women are represented by the media. It is one of the reasons women are not treated equally to men and why sexism is still a problem for most women. So when the news broke this week that The Sun was dropping Page 3, I was elated. We had won. We had succeeded in having soft-porn removed from a selfproclaimed "family paper". We all knew however, that the greatest achievement of this campaign would be the shift in public opinion away from representing women as sex objects and towards recognising women
WHATEVER is going on in Rupert Murdoch's increasingly-insecure hold on reality, he should do one decent thing before he gets much older. Enough is enough. He should order
whichever halfwit now editsThe Sun to get rid of the abomination that is Page 3. It's not about the freedom of the press. It's about common decency and it's about equality for women.
More than 380 women in the city are active in the campaign
for their achievements. People who had never even considered the effects of media sexism were drawn into the debates. But, in a cheap publicity stunt, The Sun’s apparent determination yesterday (Thursday) that it would continue printing Page 3 has shown its brazen disregard for the real and detrimental effects of representing women in this way - as well as its total disdain for the overwhelming level of public support for the campaign. The No More Page 3 campaign will continue to stand for the equal representation of women, arguing that our actions and achievements should receive equal coverage to that of men’s and that women will
not be defined by their looks alone. We are a movement of more than 217,000 people. We have risen against the might of a large corporation and will continue to rise and gain in number until The Sun permanently stops printing topless women on page 3.

Low-emission zone will cut pollution Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat
Our c ity’s favour ite newspaper Brighton and Hove’s first "lowemission zone" has officially launched - stretching along the main corridor from the Old Steine as far as Palmeira Square. Air pollution is an invisible killer. It’s linked to lung problems, heart failure, and premature deaths. Recently, the World Health Organisation also declared it to be carcinogenic. In the United Kingdom, some 29,000 people every year die because of bad air. Working in partnership with bus and taxi companies, we’ve developed a "Low-emission Zone" scheme that is set to make a real difference. Bus companies - large and small - are playing their part in making public transport cleaner. Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company has invested £6 million in a raft of hybrid buses running across the city, cutting emissions and fuel bills. Meanwhile, Cuckmere Buses, a

And for advertisers, it provides the best value *ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations) August 2014
small company run by volunteers, has just spent £90,000 on a new clean bus. The benefits stretch far and wide across the city. Nearly every single bus in Brighton and Hove passes through the zone. So, as well as cleaning up the air in town, it also means less pollution for anyone living, working, or playing near a bus route across the city. Taxi-drivers are also doing their bit by turning off their engines while stationary at taxi ranks. This builds on our successful joint project fitting at least 25 taxis with cleaner exhaust technology to slash emissions. In some of our city-centre hotspots, traffic fumes have been double the European and English legal limits for decades. Whether by making public transport, cycling, and walking safer and more reliable, or by working with partners such as the bus company to reduce emissions, the only way to clean up the air we all breathe is to reduce the number of polluting vehicles on our streets.
Councillor Ian Davey, lead member on transport, launched the low-emission zone

The £3.75m renovation of Hilton Brighton Metropole Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Hilton Brighton Metropole has unveiled plans for a £3.75 million renovation that will see the landmark building transformed with refurbished guest rooms, meeting rooms, and a new restaurant and spa. The announcement marks the start of an historic year for the hotel, which celebrates its 125th anniversary in the spring. The hotel is to refurbish 185 of its 340 guest rooms (including four suites) to offer visitors "Victorian elegance with modern convenience". The en-suite rooms, with some communal guest areas, will be transformed into stylish spaces that seek to capture the arts and crafts movement, with historical styling alongside feature artwork paying homage to William Morris. From next month, the rooms will be redesigned in calming, harmonious tones complemented by highly-functional lighting. Guests will be able to refresh themselves in renovated bathrooms, featuring large walk-in showers and new tiling. Sascha Koehler, the hotel's new general manager, said: “We are thrilled not only to be unveiling our renovation plans for the guest rooms, but also to be sharing our plans to open The Salt Room
restaurant later this month. "The Salt Room will be a relaxed, informal, urban dining retreat with covered terrace seating and ocean views. The contemporary dining experience is the perfect complement to its sister restaurant, The Coal Shed, and it will showcase the best of British food - with a particular focus on British fish and crustaceans cooked over a real charcoal oven. “Our spa is also undergoing a radical transformation and will be rebranded as 'Schmoo by the Sea', with an opening planned for early February, just in time for Valentine’s Day indulgence.” The spa will include six treatment rooms, a manicure and pedicure zone, a relaxation zone, and a reception and shop area, where guests can buy organic Schmoo skincare products, developed from high-quality ingredients based around fruit extracts. In addition to the redesigned guest rooms and the new restaurant and spa, Hilton Brighton Metropole recently renovated several banqueting and meeting rooms, providing improved facilities for business events, meetings and weddings. Hilton Brighton Metropole will remain open to guests throughout the renovation work. For further information contact: 01273 775432, or email: enquiries. brightonmet@hilton.com

New buses
New openings boosted turnover – but dented profits - at the Giggling Squid chain. The Thai restaurant group made a £46,000 operating profit, compared with £282,000 in the previous year. Pre-tax profit fell from £258,000 to £4,000. The company reported pre-opening expenses of £252,000 compared with £48,000 the year before. It said head office costs rose from 2.4% of turnover to 7% as it prepared for further expansion.
Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company has announced a multi-million-pound investment in 34 buses. The new fleet of buses is designed to comply with the demands of the new lowemission zone in the city centre. The black-green-and-blue buses will be made in Britain and reduce exhaust emissions and the weight of the buses. The buses will also have free WiFi and phone-charging points.

Poll watch By any criteria, Moulsecoomb and Bevendean should not be problematic: a mainly-white, working-class ward that has been represented by three experienced Labour councillors, each with a proven track record of public service and each with a majority of 600 or so. Until, that is, the mysterious case of Leigh Farrow, shamefully targeted for de-selection by leading figures in Brighton and Hove Labour Party - and then even more shamefully treated when he appealed against the decision. Little surprise that he was driven to leave the party; strangely, for a self-avowed socialist, he has decided to switch to UKIP; Patrick Lowe, his fellow UKIP candidate, is a former Conservative candidate. These truly are extraordinary times. Insofar as most Labour Party members know, the Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch party remains suspended, pending an investigation of which nothing has been heard since it was announced - and months after Councillor Farrow was replaced by Daniel Yates. Mr Yates was the only candidate considered by the two ward members who attended the strangest of selection meetings. Fortunately for Labour, Mr Yates is a decent candidate with a knowledge of the issues facing the city . team of street cleaners, binmen and recycling staff. A job evaluation panel decided the pay grade of the drivers should not increase. The council said it was “extremely disappointed” about the industrial action.

Revealed: The ‘Big Read’ for city’s young children Emilio Casalicchio @e_casalicchio
A pair of crime-fighters determined to foil a dastardly plan in a circus are the stars of 2015's “Big Read” book for children. William Sutcliffe's Circus of Thieves and the Raffle of Doom has been selected for the Young City Reads project, which chooses one book to be read and explored by children across the city. The project culminates on May 20 with a Brighton Festival event at which the author will be present with David Tazzyman, the book’s illustrator. Mr Sutcliffe - who has had success with adult fiction books, including Are You Experienced, and a book for young adults called The Wall - said: “I’m thrilled to be chosen for Young City Reads, and not just because I like any excuse to visit Brighton. “An initiative like this, that encourages children and adults to enjoy books together, and that gathers a community to enjoy the written word in a spirit of inter-generational fun, is exactly what every children’s book writer
dreams of participating in.” The book tells the funny and heartwarming tale of Hannah, whose life is boring, boring, boring...until she meets Billy Shank, with his astonishing camel - called Narcissus - and a host of other bizarrely brilliant members of the circus. Young City Reads was set up in 2013 by Collected Works CIC, the Brighton-based social enterprise, and has become a regular fixture in the Brighton Festival calendar. Sarah Hutchings, the organisation’s artistic director, said: “Young City Reads is all about the joy of reading and the pure pleasure of taking a little longer over a book and discussing it with your friends, your teacher, your parents or your grandparents.” Primary schools that agree to read the book in class are being invited to register for free at www.cityreads.co.uk. Participating classes will receive quizzes, puzzles and activities about the book. Andrew Comben, chief executive of Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival, said: “The written word plays a very important role in this year’s full programme of events, and Sutcliffe’s tale of a
truly unique – and incredibly mischievous – circus promises to be a great fit.” The Young City Reads project launches on World Book Day (March 5) at Jubilee Library. For further updates, follow: @youngcityreads and #YCR2015 for further updates. Visit: www.cityreads.co.uk

The Wrong Knickers by Bryony Gordon Bryony Gordon writes a weekly column for The Telegraph. She also had a bit of a thing with Russell Brand; he phoned her up afterwards and sang down the phone to her whilst she was queuing in Starbucks. Her life in her columns has been well-documented and this is a real heart-and-snot-onsleeve account of life in her 20s in London. I was wincing and laughing in equal amounts at this painfully honest and extremely funny memoir. It has, inevitably, been likened to that of a real-life Bridget Jones. But this is unfair, I think. This is real. Really real. And because of that, much funnier. The descriptions of some of the flats (and even finding a flat) in London will bring
back terrible flashbacks to absolutely anyone who’s gone through that particular nightmare. The discovery of a bedsit above a kebab shop, with barely a working tap in it and no room even for a plant, had me shuddering with barelysuppressed memories. She even has to edit her books to fit on the one wonky shelf; she chucks ones that make her look ditsy and keeps anything that has a hint of sophistication in the title. The fact that there isn’t room for one other person in the flat to read them leaves her undaunted. She’s coming to Brighton on Wednesday, February 4, and I think I’ll leave it to her to explain the title of the book. Bryony Gordon will be at The Bookish Supper Society on February 4. Arcadia at the Theatre Royal: a start to an exciting journey Arcadia is regarded not only as one of Tom Stoppard's finest works, but also one of the greatest plays of the 20th century. Witty, moving, and thoughtprovoking, it explores the delicate relationship between past and present, shifting from 1809 to the modern day - as two generations of an aristocratic family explore mathematics, poetry, landscape
gardening, and computer science. The new production - to undertake the first major UK tour since its original production 20 years ago - opens at the Theatre Royal next Friday (January 30), directed by award-winning director Blanche McIntyre. The play's many awards include the 1993 Olivier and 1995 Tony Awards for Best Play. Dakota Blue Richards, who grew

In an interview with Brighton & Hove Independent during four weeks of rehearsals, Ms Richards said: "I'm really excited by it. But it's also a bit scary. Opening in Brighton means a lot to me." On behalf of Theatre Royal Brighton Productions, Patrick Gracey said: “Theatre Royal Brighton has a great tradition of presenting theatre of the highest quality, which was the primary reason for establishing a producing company there. "We are immensely proud that this production of Arcadia, widely regarded as Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece, will open in Brighton and will then travel to a series of playhouses around the UK for the remainder of the spring season."

Following last week's column, I should declare I have a vested interest in the subject of pregnant women. I am one, once more. That's right. Tibbons is getting a sibling. We've reached the hallowed 12week ground, so we have slowly been telling family and friends. They've all been making the right noises, but a couple have gone beyond polite curiosity about dates, and so on, and have "kindly" informed me they're actively hoping we have a girl. One person has stated it as a fact. I am excited by the prospect of either sex, but this insistence that a girl would somehow be better than a(nother) boy is almost enough for me to develop a strong preference for the latter. Almost...except I really am happy either way.
So what's different for them? Maybe it's because Tibbons is such a top character that they feel no other boy could match him. Or perhaps they're subscribers to the old adage that “variety is the spice of life”. (Incidentally, they're obviously not followers of the “keep your opinions to yourself” rule-of-thumb. Shame). I didn't ask them what they thought or what they wanted me to have; it’s not like choosing a meal at a restaurant. We're having a baby; we’ll get what we get. And what difference does it really make anyway? One can pee fairly accurately standing up (eventually), while the other might struggle to. But both would be individuals in their own right, gender aside. So, one more to add to the list of

2000 | Sunday , January 23 Robbie Williams made a surprise appearance in a Brighton pantomime performance of Aladdin. The 25-year-old stole the show at the Theatre Royal by singing She’s The One to the audience of just under 1,000. Half an hour into the play the stage fell into darkness before a single spotlight suddenly revealed the former Take That member. “We are a 951-seater auditorium. Robbie is more used to playing upwards of 50,000 so it was a very personal performance. He got a standing ovation,” enthused stage-door manager, Bill Tinsley.

Freedom Leisure Partnership Not-for-profit leisure provider Freedom Leisure has been chosen to operate Portslade Sports Centre in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council. The six-year contract starts on April 1, 2015. Area Manager Chris Lovelock will oversee the site, bringing synergy and co-ordination between Portslade Sports Centre and the other Freedom Leisure sites in Brighton and Hove. Freedom Leisure will be investing £300,000 to update the centre to improve customer experience and make the site more energy efficient.
Energy conservation measures will be implemented aiming at reducing CO2 emissions by 43 tonnes through energy and lighting improvements. Geoffrey Bowden, Brighton & Hove City Council’s chair of the Economic Development & Culture Committee said: “We are delighted to welcome Freedom Leisure to manage the Portslade Sports Centre and are looking forward to seeing it modernised and updated”. A main goal is to increase membership and improve the health and well being of the community. Chris Lovelock said: “The site has great potential for upgrade work and by improving facilities and working closely with our neighbouring

I suspect many Saltdean residents were shocked by Ed AllisonWright’s article (page 11, January 16) about the proposed housing development for Falmer Avenue. It is perhaps no surprise that, as a property developer, he gave such uncritical support for the Hyde Homes planning application. But for those local people campaigning against the development, it showed a complete lack of understanding of the issues. The application is for 36 new homes on a site that is directly adjacent to the national park. Until 2010, it was actually part of the national park - before being removed for reasons that remain murky and unclear. There are several major problems building on this site which Mr Allison-Wright does not mention. There is a total lack of infrastructure for new homes; the local school is over-subscribed even with a new planned extension; there are no local dentist or doctor places; there are only two bus routes into Saltdean;
that would mean no safety against flooding for residents. The plans themselves show 36 near-identical homes - nicknamed “the laundrette” due to their resemblance to washing machines (white boxes with round windows). They are in no way in keeping with the look of the rest of the area. These are not the views of “just SOUTHCOAST a few Nimby’s”. Ed Allison-Wright @EdAllisonWright
The scale of the housing crisis facing Brighton and Hove is unprecedented. An under-supply of housing means the city now has to face up to the challenge of delivering up to 24,000 new homes between now and 2030. The scale of the challenge is farreaching and touches all sections of the community. Brighton and Hove is an attractive place to live, study, work, and visit. The basic issue is that demand for all types of housing in Brighton and Hove far outstrips supply. The latest draft Brighton and Hove City Council housing strategy document highlights the need for about 18,000 affordable homes to be constructed in the city by 2017. The simple truth is that - in common with the rest of the United Kingdom - Brighton and Hove has not built enough homes to keep pace with demand as the population has grown. Through the familiar cycles of property boom and bust, regardless of economic conditions and under every complexion of council administration, not enough homes have been built. In particular, given the scarcity of land in the city, there is a dearth of sites that are capable of supporting the development of family-size houses - for which
there is high demand, as the city continues to prove popular with families. Brighton and Hove is crying out for a positive vision to provide an answer to the housing crisis that is unfolding. New solutions are needed so that the city can meet the needs of its existing and future residents. Doing nothing, maintaining the status quo, would have serious implications for the aspirations and life chances of both current and future generations of Brighton and Hove residents. According to Rightmove, the average house price in Brighton and Hove in 2013 hit £330,000, with house price inflation of about 11% in that year. For those for whom home-ownership or affordable rented housing was not an option, the cost of private renting increased by more than 7% in 2013. Data from the Department for Communities and Local Government shows that median house-price-to-earnings ratio in the city in 2013 was in excess of 10 times earnings. Conventional wisdom among mortgage lenders is that approximately four times income would be affordable. Simple economics dictates that as supply increases to keep pace with demand, prices will stabilise. Therefore, it is vitally important that house building increases for all types of accommodation whether affordable housing, privately
rented, or homes for sale on the open market. The scale of the challenge feels almost insurmountable. The answer, however, is actually really straightforward: to get the homes built that the city and its residents badly need. Land needs to be re-zoned to be allocated for housing and densities need to be increased on sites where the opportunity exists. And a push skyward to build taller. Misconceptions about apartment living in taller buildings should not hold back well-designed tall buildings. Judicious allocation of certain "urban fringe" sites is also a significant part of the answer. These sites offer the opportunity to construct high-quality familysize homes with car parking and gardens, which brownfield sites in the city centre do not lend themselves to. Plans for one of the first urban fringe sites at Falmer Avenue in Saltdean have recently been submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council for planning. A decision is due early this year. I hope that they are passed; 36 family-size homes with 40% for affordable housing would make a significant contribution to the needs of families looking for good quality homes in Brighton and Hove. Sussex County Cricket Club celebrated its two-year partnership with Rockinghorse with the announcement that recent events at the club had raised more than £20,000 for the children’s charity. Rockinghorse is a Brightonbased charity that has been supporting children for more than 45 years and is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital. Six recent “Where Cricket Meets…” events at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground have helped raise £20,785, which will go towards a MRI Scanner Compatible TV and DVD Unit. The hospital is installing a third MRI scanning unit that works to its full potential only if the patient lies still. Therefore, the TV and DVD unit will be installed into the scanning unit so that it can be used as a distraction for the younger or more vulnerable patients who need these investigations as part of their treatment. The aim is that this would then decrease the number of children who have to have more than one appointment due to bad screening or who have to re-book, because the child is too frightened to go into the machine. Tony Cottey, Sussex County Cricket Club's business relationship manager, said: “During our partnership with Rockinghorse, we’ve been putting
on events such as our ‘Where Cricket Meets…’ lunches. “Our partnership has been fantastic and has raised £20,000 through our six events, which have seen sporting stars such as former Welsh rugby international player Scott Quinnell and former England football star Matthew Le Tissier attend as special guests. “The money has been raised via charity auctions and the popular pre-dinner ‘heads and tails’ game over the past two years. The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital is a fantastic hospital here in Brighton and such a great cause.” Steve Magoffin, the Sussex bowler who was on-hand to visit the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital for a special cheque presentation, said: “As a player, I am delighted to be able to support the club and get involved in the events raising money for the Rockinghorse charity. “The work they do here at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital is hugely important for families in the area with sick children.” Analiese Doctrove, the head of fundraising for Rockinghorse, said: “We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Sussex County Cricket Club. “Everyone who attended the events and made a donation has really helped to make a huge difference to the children of Sussex, and in particular the work of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.”

Senior pet moments Susan Gregersen Vet, Vets2Home Due to improved veterinary care, knowledge, and dietary habits, our pets are now living longer than they ever have before. One consequence of this is that pets, along with their owners and vets, are faced with a whole new set of age-related problems usually depending on the species and breed in question. So when does a pet officially become “old” - senior or geriatric? It varies depending on species and breed, but cats and small dogs are generally considered senior at the age of seven and geriatric after 10 years. Larger breed dogs tend to have shorter life-spans and are considered
senior or even geriatric when they are approximately six years of age if they are very large. Owners tend to want to think of their pet's age in human terms. While it is not as simple as "1 human year = X cat/dog years", there are calculations that can help put a pet's age in human terms. Senior tip of the week: To age your pet correctly according to breed and size please check out this informative website: www.calculatorcat.com for both cats and dogs.

A decline in what is appropriate damages the world for us all Graham Chainey
We are losing our sense of what is socially appropriate. You log on to a national newspaper’s website to find out about the latest terrorist atrocity, say, and as you scroll down the story, an advertising video suddenly opens in the middle of it for a weight-loss regime, while alongside are distracting pictures captioned “Chloe Goodman flashes her bottom at Paris Hilton” and “Kelly Brooks flaunts her toned legs in denim hotpants” (I am not making these up). Or you go to our The Argus’s site for an update on the recent drowning tragedy on Brighton beach and the report is framed by a glaring ad for Tesco, illustrated by jars of Branston Pickle. As you read the distressing story (and bear in mind that the person reading might be a relative or friend of one of those involved), your eye is constantly being lured away by flashing ads
for holiday lets, or a promotion for conservatories. At the end of the report you run into “Unthinkably large animals that are actually real” and “Caroline Wozniacki bares all in underwear shoot”. Newspaper websites get tackier by the day. And the word that keeps coming to one’s mind is “inappropriate”. The juxtaposing in this cynical way of tragic real-world news stories with trite consumerist

But it seems to have become taboo in our relativistic and classless modern world to make such distinctions any more, except possibly There is no longer in the most diehard any sense of traditional circles. There is no longer any appropriate language, dress, sense of appropriate manners, or behaviour” language, dress, manners, or behaviour. People have bedroom junk, of real events with inflated conversations on their phones while on buses or trains. “Barrack” celebrity tattle, is inappropriate. But it is not just newspaper language is employed in the websites. Our society generally presence of one’s grandmother or seems to be rapidly losing all grandchild. (A Seaford headteacher sense of social appropriateness, complained recently that parents of those cultural protocols and of primary school children were etiquettes that are the bedrock of using “inappropriate behaviour any civilisation. It is as if the very and inappropriate language” at the concept of the appropriate has been school gate.) Children are permitted
to watch violent or explicit films and programmes. Phones and cameras are used during concerts and plays. Women apply makeup on public transport. Mourners dress down for funerals. Hospital doctors wear ripped jeans and casual kit and - along with nurses and other care providers call elderly patients by their first names. In the summer, you see shirtless blokes boarding buses and women in bikinis in shops. There is no sense any more of the sacredness of religious buildings. People now behave without distinction, whether they are in the office, street, pub, train, shop, church, or the home. This deformalising of society, this universal equalising of everyone and everything, this abandoning of centuries of evolved cultural dignities and niceties, cheapens society, standardises all situations to their lowest common element,
erodes social nuances, and makes life less interesting. The mockery of anything elevated, the worship of all things trivial, follow. For much of it, I blame the internet. The internet delivers the entire gamut of human experience promiscuously to the same screen. Arcane knowledge and mendacities, celebrity voyeurism and news insights, high art and pornography, informed criticism and moronic bigotry, individuality and mass emotion, trolls, tweets and egoblogs - all jostle within the same space, on the same level, as if they all bore the same value. There is no sense of appropriateness or inappropriateness on a computer screen, and this lack of subtlety radiates out to diminish our world. It is Groundhog Day as councillors eye election Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy
It is at times like these that even Brighton & Hove Independent has to reach for a clichĂŠ. Somehow, in the early squalls of electioneering - amid the dead calm, it has to be said, of electorate apathy - it seems appropriate. Here goes. The definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That's what Albert Einstein said. Although nobody quite knows when, or where. Or even why. Welcome to Groundhog Day. When members of all parties go through the motions - literally, in the case of the Green Party last weekend (see page 24) - and, in the spirit of holier-than-them, try to crawl to the moral high ground, if such a place exists in our budget-setting process. We know the routine, much as Bill Murray does in the great
1993 Hollywood hit. He knows the script, but he cannot escape it. In the parochial version that is so beloved of our political leaders in Brighton and Hove, it goes something like this: the minority Green administration tries to increase tax beyond what according to the government - we are not allowed to contemplate, at least not without spending excessive amounts on a citywide referendum. (Note for the nearfuture: Will a Labour government remove this ludicrous restriction, if elected after May 7? We are a grown-up city that should be allowed to make grown-up decisions for ourselves.) Then, the Conservative opposition argues - in, it has to be said, a principled and perfectly proper way - that the budget should be frozen. That we would not choose to start from where we are; that it it is not too late to re-think what the city council does and how it does it. (Note for the near-future: What exactly do they propose?). Oh no, say the others. We can't allow that - and we
certainly cannot allow Eric Pickles, the secretary of state for communities and local government to implement it. So then we come to Labour, with 13 councillors, the smallest group on the council. We don't want, they say, "hardworking" families who are suffering a "cost-of-living crisis" to pay for the cuts of a Conservativeled government. No, we will vote only for a 1.99% council tax increase. Unless, of course, you are one of the unemployed families living in poverty or near-poverty, for whom the cost of surviving (rather than living) is top priority. In which case, Labour is willing - in the case of 16,000 of our poorest households - to push through a 76% increase in council tax by changing the Council Tax Reduction Scheme. The Greens won't vote for a modest "threshold" 1.99% increase in council tax; the Conservatives won't vote for such a big rise in council tax which is, after all, four times the rate of inflation. They won't, I can reveal, even vote determinedly to trigger a referendum that gives

A general meeting of the party’s grassroot members support a motion (see right) that stated: “To propose this rise in council tax in conjunction with a cuts budget would fatally undermine the Green Party’s anti-austerity stance locally and nationally. It is the worst of all worlds.” The “no cuts” motion – proposed by John Medhurst, a respected author and trade unionist – had 17 seconders, including four councillors and a parliamentary candidate: Ruth Buckley, Green councillor for Goldsmid and deputy leader of the city council; Alex Phillips, Green councillor
for Goldsmid; Davy Jones, Green parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown; Liz Wakefield, Green councillor for Hanover and Elm Grove; and Mike Jones, Green councillor for Preston Park. Leading figures in the party, however, pointed out another general meeting was scheduled before the crucial budget council meeting next month. In a further effort to downplay the significance of the vote, they also pointed out three of the four councillors who seconded the motion are standing down on May 7; only Alex Phillips is seeking a new term of office. Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Pavilion, abstained in the votes and spoke only to ask a question. Green activists have been buoyed by news that membership has hit a record – with 1,500 members in the city, increasing at the rate of up to
50 a day since the start of 2015. The “Green surge” - which party insiders say comes from across the city and from all sectors of society, not just students - means the party is likely to be the city’s biggest party in terms of membership by the time of the city council elections. Labour - which has struggled to achieve a similar surge - is thought to have about 1,600 members. The meeting also voted to ask Councillor Jason Kitcat to stand down as leader of the minority Green administration – or “Convenor” of the Green Group – in the run-up to the city council elections on May 7. In theory, the Green Party’s “no cuts” vote has to be followed by the party’s 20 councillors; in practice, the Green Group is not “whipped” and so individuals can decide how to vote on any issue.
‘No to cuts' - The motion in full This General Meeting notes the Motion, passed unanimously (with one abstention) at the December 2015 General Meeting, that the Brighton & Hove Green Party supports the production of a Budget for 2015-16 that will protect local services and employment, not cut them. The cuts to local services required to "balance the budget" for 2015-16 are the direct result of massive and unprecedented cuts by central government to the local government support grant, cuts which could mean a further cut to the Brighton & Hove budget of over £100 million by 2020. This will effectively destroy local services as we know them. The cuts required to balance the budget for 2015-16 alone would require a restoration of more than £20 million of government grant or a Council Tax rise of over £20%. The proposed 5.9% Council Tax increase is therefore not viable as a means to fight the cuts or defend the vulnerable. It is a regressive tax on the poorest, and it would hardly dent the massive cuts still required. To propose this rise in Council Tax in conjunction with a cuts budget would fatally undermine the Green Party's anti-austerity stance locally and nationally. It is the worst of all worlds. We are now seeing a "Green surge" and rising membership especially amongst younger voters, the primary reason for which is our inspiring anti-austerity message. If the only example in the UK of the Green Party in office were to implement a large cuts budget just before the 2015 General Election that would disillusion

Brighton & Hove Independent’s consultation exercise about how city residents feel their local authority should set its budget - in these times of tight national spending restrictions - is a fascinating experiment. But hasn’t the council itself already consulted? Well, local politics is full of official consultation. We have all had experience of this - and it is often a mixed experience. It is only natural that in a polarised debate – for example, will we or won’t we build a skatepark? – half of those involved will end up complaining the consultation was pointless,
whichever way the decision goes. Often, it is also true the council is compelled by law to consult at certain stages of a process and so the accusation can be levelled that it does so only because it has to. Consultation, too, is not the same as decision-making - and some see this as a problem as well. But, as with other vital aspects of a functioning democracy - such as the right to protest, the right to petition, freedom of speech, and the rule of law - the right to be consulted has its limits and is rarely directly linked to a decision. Nevertheless, it can be useful in many ways. For one thing, politicians are always interested in the strength and direction of public opinion; it is only natural in a democracy that

I am pleased too that Brighton & Hove Independent has also agreed to be a partner in the “Citizens’ Drop-In”, another democratic experiment, alongside the Brighton-based non-profit Democratic Society. This event – the second in a series – is a free, open drop-in session for everyone and anyone to come and find out more about politics and democracy; how they can get involved in a positive way; and
ensure their voice is heard. It is about people power. Please do come along and drop in for a chat and a browse at this democracy celebration and fair on Tuesday, February 10 at the Brighthelm Centre, from 6pm to 7.30pm. The rollercoaster that is Brighton and Hove Green Party politics has taken another stomach-churning lurch. At its general meeting, the party passed two motions that will define its approach to politics in the city in the weeks preceding the general election and the city council elections. Faced with cuts in government grants of up to £26m, the Green administration proposed a budget based on a 5.9% council tax increase, which would raise £4 million and would require approval in a referendum. Labour would support a 2% increase that councils may make without a referendum, while the Tories are simply split. But now the Brighton and Hove Green Party has voted to set an unlawful budget – inevitably resulting in Eric Pickles taking over the council’s budget and ordering savage cuts. It also voted to request Jason Kitcat, the Green group convenor, to stand down. The first motion exposes the Green Party’s aims and rationale with cruel clarity. Firstly, this is not about Brighton and Hove residents bearing the brunt of £100 million of cuts to the city budget that the election of a Green MP has done absolutely nothing to prevent they’re not mentioned. This is about protecting the Green Party’s antiausterity credentials and enabling the so-called “Green surge”. It begs the question of whether Greens see council services and staff as anything more than the collateral damage of Caroline Lucas’s reelection campaign. Secondly, it is the decision of a party that is lacking in the will and inclination - and, I would argue, the moral courage - to carry out the job that the people

of Brighton and Hove elected it to do in 2011. Then, the Green manifesto talked about resisting cuts. But, for all the fine words, this policy achieves precisely the opposite: inviting Pickles to send in his commissioners within weeks of an election that the Greens are universally expected to lose. And all they offer by way of resistance is protests and street theatre. You don’t cure cancer by shouting slogans outside a hospital. The Greens remain an adolescent political movement because they won’t grasp this essential truth. Thirdly, it overturns the policy that Caroline Lucas and Councillor Kitcat declared united their party – that of seeking an above-inflation council tax increase through a referendum. It actually endorses Labour’s rationale for opposing large council tax increases: that they are regressive and hit the poor hardest. Finally, the motion’s whole rationale is that only a change of government can deliver a fairer settlement for local government. But, under our electoral system, the most likely outcome of a big Green surge would be to keep David Cameron in No10. Is that really what they want? Most older politicians remember Neil Kinnock’s evisceration of Militant at the 1985 Labour Party conference, especially the phrases about a Labour council sending taxis scuttling around the city with redundancy notices for council staff. What followed was a commitment that Labour will never play politics with council services and staff. Faced with government cuts, the only responsible solution is minimise their impact and campaign for a Government that can effect real and lasting change. “Some of our colleagues, it seems to me, have become like latterday public schoolboys – it’s not
whether you won or lost, or how you played the game”. Again Kinnock eerily anticipated Brighton’s Greens: protesting against academies, but failing to deliver the new secondary school they promised in 2011; talking about neoliberalism, but voting against council monitoring of food banks; and supporting vanity projects like the i360, whose viability requires hundreds of thousands of car-borne visitors. A party of privileged poundshop Derek Hattons who, when challenged to defend their record on a council motion of no confidence, talk about the Iraq war. A party which - from top to bottom - prefers protest to serious political engagement and appears increasingly remote from the realities of a city of low and falling pay, soaring housing costs, and thousands using food banks. And the Green Party, at all levels, has some serious questions to answer. Do its leaders - Ms Lucas above all - back the Brighton and Hove Green Party’s decision? How would Ms Lucas, as MP for Brighton Pavilion, represent the city in Whitehall and beyond when her party has voted to opt out of the political process? What has changed to make Lucas’s party abandon the policy she endorsed less than two years ago? The votes at the general meeting were the votes of Caroline’s Militant Tendency. A party in a death spiral, incapable of looking beyond its own internal disagreements to the needs of the people it was elected to serve. A party of posturing and grandstanding, out of touch and scared to its core of exercising real responsibility. A party that will be rejected wholesale by the electors of Brighton and Hove in May. How to grow a sustainable business Rob Da Costa is a business coach with more than 25 years’ experience. On Wednesday (January 28), he will be leading one of Brighton Chamber of Commerce's Ride the Wave events for creative businesses. To start your own business you need more than just a good idea. Every successful entrepreneur understands that you need three things to grow a business: A great idea Every business starts with a good idea that needs to be researched to ensure you understand who your target customer is, what their need is, and that your idea meets that need. Finally, you need to be sure that you are not too late to market. The knowledge and time to run a business Now you have the first point figured out, you have to acquire the knowledge to run your business. That includes setting up systems for invoicing, HR, capacity management, timesheets, and so on. It includes allocating enough time to focus on writing and delivering a business vision and strategy anticipating the opportunities and icebergs before you hit one. The ability to focus on the future and deliver a constant
stream of new customers Next, you need to allocate a significant amount of regular time to decide how you are going to find a constant stream of new customers (to avoid the peaks - no time to do anything but deliver customer work; and to avoid the troughs - not enough clients). This includes a marketing plan, sales strategy, and customerretention plan. When the last two are overlooked it leads to: • bottlenecks in delivery of client work; • the inability to grow your business; • either super-busy or not enough work - which leads to poor decision-making (for example, discounting work in order to win a client or taking the wrong kind of work on that becomes loss-making); • dependence on a very small client list; • demotivated staff who feel they are not valued, leading to low retention; • a sense of "one step forward, one back". So if you want to avoid these pitfalls, then ensure you focus equal amounts of time and energy on each of the above three crucial business areas. To find out more about Ride the Wave, visit: www.businessinbrighton. org.uk/ridethewave; or email ridethewave@ businessinbrighton.org.uk.
Thousands of tons of sewer blockers cleared Wastewater Strategy Manager, said: “The use of wet wipes, and things like make-up wipes, moist toilet tissue and cleaning wipes, apparently rises by 15 per cent each year but this trend is putting a strain on our sewers – as shown by the huge amount cleared from our works. “Unlike toilet roll, these wipes don’t break down when flushed so frequently cause blockages. They can also cause damage at our treatment works as they can get tangled up in pumps and filters. Even those said to be ‘flushable’ cause problems – they may flush away but they don’t biodegrade so can still block pipes further down the line. “The same applies to things like cotton buds, dental floss, make up wipes and cotton wool. Flushing them causes a pain in
the drain, which is why we urge people to only flush the three Ps – pee, poo and paper.” The sewers’ other biggest enemy is cooking fat poured down plugholes, which solidifies over time. Last year, 11,000 blockages in Southern Water’s region were caused by fat, wipes and other things that should not be in sewers. It’s a nationwide problem - in England and Wales, over two thirds of sewer blockages are caused by inappropriate items finding their way down the sink or toilet. The property starts with a welcoming wide hallway. The stripped wooden stained floors and white walls, coupled with high ceilings make the house a complete blank canvas for a new owner. Situated close to Brighton Hospital, Brighton College, and the famous seafront and promenade.
In one of Kemptown’s most prestigious streets, with the village at one end and the sea at the other, this Georgian home, built in the 1860’s and now Grade ll listed, has sea views, a private courtyard and roof terrace. Refurbished to an exceptionally high standard, with one bedroom accommodation on the lower ground floor, perfect for guests.
www.hamptons.co.uk A penthouse apartment, one of two facing south. This particular flat benefits from southern and easterly aspects from its elevated spot on the 17th floor. The spacious living room leads onto the enclosed balcony, offering views across the city and beyond.

Viewpoint: Homes planned for derelict factory site Simon Elyas
Plans for a vacant factory site at the corner of Newtown Road and Goldstone Lane in Hove - which has been derelict for around 12 years - could finally see old and tatty buildings replaced with new homes and workspace from Hyde New Homes, the locally-based developer. Councillors are expected to make a decision on the plans at a planning committee meeting on Wednesday (January 28). Officers have, however, recommended that the application could potentially be refused. An exhibition was held for local residents and businesses to see the plans last year, before the planning application was submitted. The overall consensus was that the site is crying out for this type of positive development. The design is attractive with a mix of houses, apartments, and offices - with a reasonable amount of car parking in a basement car park. I was pleased to see a commitment to provide an environmentally-friendly building and was impressed by the passion of the architect and the developer to regenerate the site by delivering the highest-quality homes and
buildings. I understand 40% of the homes are going to be for affordable housing, a higher proportion than has been secured on other major developments locally in recent times. As both a resident of Goldstone Lane and a local businessman, I can see the need to balance competing requirements for housing land and employment space. This proposal, however, offers the local area the very best of both worlds. Given the well-publicised need for new homes in the city, it appears this is exactly the type of development that will help to tackle the housing crisis and reduce the need to build on our green open spaces. The empty buildings on the site are a relic of their former industrial use as factories, which long ago relocated; they are now effectively redundant in terms of their ability to support jobs on the site. Various schemes and proposals have been put forward for new buildings on this site over the years, but none has yet proven economically viable and the existing buildings are now all but falling down. This is an exciting proposal from a reputable developer with a track record for delivering high-quality
developments in the city. Jobs would, of course, be created while the development is being built and the offices would support something between 10 and 15 full-time jobs. As a local businessman, I am keen to see investment on this scale coming into Hove. In my view, it should be welcomed and grabbed with both hands. We need investment, we need new homes, and we need new jobs. This proposal ticks all the boxes. Simon Elyas is a Hove resident and local businessman
The application proposes the demolition of existing buildings and redevelopment of the site at 70 Goldstone Lane and the site of Chrome Productions Limited

the city is our office Bonett’s
Do Estate and Letting agents need to be qualified? From time to time you hear rumours of an estate agent selling a local property under the table to a friend or of a letting agent absconding to Marbella with the landlords’ rents or deposits. Having read the stories, you would imagine members of the public who need to deal with an estate agent would check the credentials of the person walking through their door with a clipboard and a ready smile. Unhappily, the average seller or landlord, entrusting probably his or her most valuable possession to an agent, often just signs on the dotted line as long as the price is high and the fee low. In over 30 years in the local industry, I would be surprised if I have been asked more than once if I am a member of a professional body... it’s a bit shocking! So, why bother asking? The National Association of Estate Agents and the Association of Residential Letting Agents both bind their members to a very strict code of conduct, for your benefit: the client, buyer or tenant. It’s not a ‘trade secret’ either. Both the NAEA and ARLA websites have ‘agent search’ facilities so you can see who in your area is a member. A few
are corporate firms and others independents. If an independent, you will know that at least one of the staff in the office you are working with is a member and knows the standards. Of course, it’s not just the membership which counts. You need to trust the agent will adhere to the best standards and look after your interests properly. Thankfully, these bodies do provide member agents with standards they need to adhere to in their work. You, the public can go onto the NAEA or ARLA websites and inspect the Codes of Practice. We have to hold current Client Money Protection and Professional Indemnity Insurance; we are regulated by HMRC regarding Anti-money Laundering and client Account Reporting. Finally, all members of the NAEA or ARLA have to be in an independent redress scheme; we are registered with the Property Ombudsman. Aside from regulations, these bodies provide top quality advice and training. Yes, we think estate and letting agents should be conversant with the law. At Bonett’s, for instance, we have a legal helpline so, if you are dealing with us and we
don’t know the absolute answer, we have full access to top quality advice so we never mislead you. When you start thinking about selling or renting, little or any of that is on your radar. It’s all about the ‘showcase’: photographs, floor plans, web presence, access to the fabled ‘London market’ (yes, if an agent has a website, they have that access J)...the pzazz! But, down the line, you need not just the upfront marketing stuff, but the depth of knowledge and professionalism to look after your interests all the way through. I would suggest that before you start calling agents in to deal with your most treasured possession, you check the NAEA or ARLA sites to ensure you start at the right place. It’s not all about the glitz! Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. Paulbonett@bonetts.co.uk Twitter: @bonettpa

The Places I Eat
Semolina: An unassuming but exciting addition to London Road’s food scene Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
Semolina sits tucked away on Baker Street, unassuming to the average passer-by. But those in the know will have heard the murmurings of appreciation for this wonderful new London Roadbased cafe-cum-bistro. Run by husband and wife team, Linda and Orson, Semolina is a dream come true for the hardworking couple. Run solely by them, with Linda heading up frontof-house duties and Orson as head chef, Semolina focuses on “good food cooked well” and has a strong emphasis on using local produce. Having opened last November, Semolina is the duo's first venture together. Orson’s experience as a chef has seen him cater for many popular Brighton pubs, including The Geese and Shakespeare's Head. At Semolina, Orson aims at bringing his experience and passion to create a welcoming, intimate bistro. The menu has Italian, French, and British influences - plus farther afield cuisines such as Thai and Indian. All dietary requirements are catered for, something so important
Coffee Chronicles by
Behind every successful man is his wife (or husband) - and behind every coffee business is tea. Tea is coffee's submissive lifepartner, always in the shadow of
creamed celeriac, glazed carrots and kale (£14). Nibbling on gorgeous homemade, warm bread and softened truffle flavoured butter, I couldn’t help but feel relaxed in Semolina’s intimate setting and notice that everyone in the small space looked like they felt the same: laid-back and having a great time. Presented after a short wait, our starters were both very good. Rich and thick, the clam chowder was well-seasoned with chunks of potato floating alongside salty clam and cockles and went perfectly with the homemade bread. For me, the chowder verged on being too creamy, but others may see this dairy overload Cut into slender morsels, the venison haunch was as a good thing. exceptionally well cooked The pork belly dish Sipping on a fruity non-alcoholic was presented beautifully: tender pomegranate cocktail, we ordered. squares of pork, thick rounds of Laura, with whom I was dining, homemade black pudding on a opted for the crisp belly of bed of smooth, creamed jerusalem pork, seared black pudding and artichoke. Laura waxed lyrical jerusalem artichoke (£6), with about how much she enjoyed this roasted duck breast, spiced red dish. Cut into slender morsels, the cabbage and parsnip gratin (£15); I chose the clam and cockle chowder venison haunch was exceptionally (£5), followed by venison haunch, well cooked and retained a when opening an establishment in a diverse city such as Brighton and Hove. Dishes include a colourful beetroot, orange and pomegranate salad (v), whole grilled plaice, brown shrimp and caper butter (gf) and pan-fried squid, bass, coconut and coriander with jasmine arancini.
it's more successful and infinitely more popular bedfellow. As a tea-drinker, one is already a step behind. Therefore, it is important to choose your brand wisely. In 1706, Thomas Twining opened Britain's first tea room on The Strand in London. Twinings could have funded our Olympic bid all on its own, as having occupied the site ever since, they are London's longest-standing
rate-payer. In 1787, they designed their logo. Which holds the record for the world's oldest continuallyused logo. Avid "Chroniclers" (our readers, like Justin's Beliebers) will know that Twinings possess a royal warrant. Chroniclers also know that Twinings stake an almost convincing claim to the introduction to the market of
lot of juiciness and moisture, with a perfect light pink centre. Surrounded by small carrots and sitting on a bed of thick creamed celeriac, the balance of sweet and earthy flavours of this dish worked really well. The crispy kale, however, tasted far too bitter for the plate and could have been omitted. I was particularly envious of the duck with red cabbage and parsnip gratin, as I watched Laura thoroughly enjoy this splendid,
well-cooked plate of food. Both plates weren’t over-complicated and did exactly as Linda wanted: good food cooked well. Charming, intimate, great service, and a varied seasonal menu. What’s not to love about another lovely addition to London Road’s growing food scene?
Food news
This is the first time that father and son have collaborated. George said: “I've never cooked with my dad in a professional kitchen, so its going to be an interesting challenge. I’m really excited to have this opportunity to present some of my own dishes under my own name for the first time.” Andy reached the semi-finals of the BBC's Masterchef TV show in 1997 and was the only British contestant ever to take part in the prestigious Sofitel Amateur Cook of the Year competition in Lyon in 2000 with chef mentor Bruce Poole of the Michelin-starred Chez Bruce, competing against teams from all over Europe.
Andy Lynes - the Brighton-based restaurant critic, and Masterchef semi-finalist and author - will be hosting his first pop-up event next month. The event sees Andy partner with his son, George, in an evening aptly entitled "Generations". Taking place at Marwood Café in the heart of The Lanes, the evening promises to be a combination of culinary talent with a menu inspired by Andy’s travels across the UK last year. Neither Andy nor George is a stranger to kitchen environments, with the latter having worked in two of Brighton’s most admired restaurants, The Chilli Pickle and Coal Shed. Earl Grey. Its main contender to the throne is/was Jacksons of Piccadilly. In true regal style, Twinings did what one must do when one is faced with such a dilemma - they bought the rival company. As you do. In 2006, Twinings started making hot chocolate (don't know - never tried it) and in 2007, it added to its range with tins of coffee (not interested). As ever, the company is moving

Pretty Good Thinking
Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan
I like to incorporate a local angle on what is covered in the Pretty Good Thinking column. Tisserand product ranges are distributed from via Hovebased First Natural Brands (www.fnlbrands.com). So I am delighted to remind you that this business continues to source oils from all over the world with a guarantee they are 100% pure, organic, wild-crafted or ethically-harvested. Not only Soil Association certified and Vegan Society approved, but also easily found in Boots. My collie dog and I are fastidious about smells while we are shuttered indoors with the heating on high. What a delight to try a ceramic heatring over a light bulb with a few drops of ginger essential oil. This makes my lounge smells less like a stable and more like a flower shop within five minutes. Really, there is something very energising about this richlysophisticated scent; you can’t
quite place it, but it is very stimulating. The Tisserand winter trio also includes Organic Bergamot Essential Oil, which is extracted from the rind of the fruit grown in Italy. This invigorating oil has a mellow citrus- based aroma that blends well with frankincense, geranium, or lemongrass. The third element is more widely recognised for its medicinal quality; organic eucalyptus oil, ranks equal with my other favourite, Tea Tree. Distilled from leaves grown in Spain, this eucalyptus is a strong, fresh, and stimulating oil, with a piercing balsamic aroma - ideal for vaporisation to boost concentration and clear the head. I love Argan oil for the face or hair. I prefer a spray dispenser for economy reasons, but this is ideal for cuticles so don’t be too sparing. The Tisserand product is completely fragrance-free,
Argan Beauty Oil, £16
which is a genuine plus if you have a pet that responds to every scent molecule. The only thing I don’t enjoy with the unrefined stuff is the rather intense nutty smell. Argan Beauty Oil is an easy way round this, for just £16. I get asked how to put these oils on hair. I apply over the areas to be treated (usually scalp or ends, but sometimes both) then wrap in a towel for an hour or longer. It seems to dry or evaporate, but it is absorbed into the hair and skin. After a gentle shampoo, the condition of both hair and scalp are greatly soothed and revived with much greater shine and bounce.

Albion Manager
League position
(On Teixeira's performance against Ipswich)
Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Brighton head into their highest profile game of the season buoyed by Wednesday’s impressive win against high-flying Ipswich but knowing they will have to up their game further still to dethrone current cup holders Arsenal. The Seagulls recovered from their home blip against Brentford to continue their encouraging form since the departure of Sami Hyypiä and have now won four games from the five since the former Liverpool player’s resignation. Chris Hughton will no doubt be relishing the opportunity to pit his wits against Arsene Wenger and Wednesday night’s victory suggests the one-time Spurs coach is in possession of enough tactical nous to potentially spring a surprise. Against the Tractor Boys, Hughton deployed right back Inigo Calderon on the right hand side of the Albion’s advanced midfield three, with Bruno slotting into Calderon’s usual defensive role and the more attacking duo of Solly March and Adrian Colunga left on the bench. It proved a master stroke as Calderon - who had previously played in a more attacking role in Spain earlier in his career - not only provided his usual array of swashbuckling attacking play but also successfully restricted the attacking forays of Ipswich’s sought-after left back Tyrone Mings. Rohan Ince continues to be a revelation under Hughton, who appears to have not only restored

the imposing midfielder’s confidence but is allowing him a less restrictive role in the side. Under Hughton, Danny Holla provides the stable positional stance in the Albion midfield, releasing Ince to maraud and have maximum impact on the game. He will need to be at his best against a fluid Arsenal midfield likely to include returning German creative talent Mesut Ozil. One particular feature of Hughton’s albeit short spell at the Albion helm has been the way he appears to be getting the best from players his predecessor struggled to utilise effectively. As well as Ince – who one again has the appearance of a player fast-becoming one of his club’s key men – Hughton has also revitalised other players who did not seem in favour under Hyypia. Holla has returned to regular action and is forging an encouraging midfield doubleact with Ince, Craig Mackail-
Albion team news Likely line-up Stockdale, Bruno, Dunk, Greer, Bennett, Holla, Ince, Calderon, Teixeira, Baldock, O’Grady.
Likely substitutes Walton, Hughes, Halford, Forster-Caskey, March, Colunga, Mackail-Smith.
Smith and Chris O’Grady are doing enough to suggest both were loaned out far too readily earlier in the campaign and Joao Teixeira is thriving. The Liverpool loanee was star of the show against Ipswich, reveling in the extra space afforded to him by Hughton’s decision to start a more physical, hold-up striker at the front of the Albion attack. O’Grady stretched the Ipswich defence and attracted more defenders to him when in possession. That in turn freed up more space for the advancing Teixeira, which he exploited with impressive aplomb. Whether O’Grady remains at the Albion and whether Hughton can inspire a similar matchwinning turn from his squad this weekend remains to be seen. But the signs are there that Brighton with Hughton at the helm are more than capable of pulling clear of relegation.

Joao was excellent. I had seen enough of him before I came here, to know what type of player he was – but you don't really know until you see players close up in training. "What he has got for a small lad is a physicality about him. He is not a naturally defensive player, but if we get him on the ball then he has a natural ability. "He is a flexible player who can play anywhere across the front, other than up top on his own, but that is his best position. "Before the game, we spoke about causing them problems. We thought that if we could get the ball beyond their central midfield players, in Joao we had someone who is quite natural in that position. "You then hope he is going to have a good day, and he did."

probably a better defeat than the previous week, and try to work out what planet the ref was on. Tune into Radio Reverb, 97.2FM, online at www.radioreverb.com, or via the podcast on iTunes and www.albionroar.co.uk. The show is brought to you in association with: www.oldfootballshirts.com
So we have been here before. Actually, we've been here for a few times but I wasn't around when Brighton & Hove Albion took on Arsenal 80 years ago! This weekend a sell-out crowd will be able to savour the game once again. Both teams are on a relative high with the Gunners beating Manchester City at the weekend, and the Albion on the back of one of the best performances of the season with victory over Ipswich in midweek. There are just a couple of players remaining in the Albion side from when the two teams met, also in the FA Cup, in January 2013. So are the teams stronger than two years ago? The Gunners have strength right through the team but Alexis Sanchez has been a joy to watch in the Premier League.

We spoke to East Stand season ticket holder, Robert Sherlock, after the Brentford game for his views on the match, and what he thinks of Chris Hughton’s appointment: “It was certainly an encouraging performance. We should have gone into the break a goal up, not 1-0 down. We
were a bit profligate in front of goal but we did create a lot of chances. "The players seemed to know what their roles are, more so than when under Sami’s instructions. We could have lost 5-0 in the end but I’m glad we went all out for the win. "Hughton appears to have instilled some much needed belief into the squad. Whether we’re in possession or not, the players seem know their jobs now. The players are clearly listening to him, and responding on the pitch.”
Ex-Tottenham Hotspur rightback Chris Hughton will be relishing the visit of his former foes Arsenal to the Amex for Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round encounter. At the same stage in the competition two years ago, Olivier Giroud was the difference as the Frenchmen netted an exquisite brace – either side of a point-blank Ashley Barnes header – before debutant Leo Ulloa dived to nod home an equaliser. Substitute Theo Walcott – somewhat fortuitously via a deflection off Adam ElAbd’s shoulder – won the contest in the final few minutes. Arsene Wenger’s men are the current holders and their illustrious FA Cup pedigree began in 1927 with a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City (the only nonEnglish victors to date). Three

Newcastle were overturned but nowhere near full strength but the Seagulls enjoyed excellent performances against Sunderland and Liverpool in the League Cup. This season's campaigning in that competition came to an end at White Hart Lane. Perhaps this rejuvenated side can go one better against Spurs' North London rivals? It should be fun
Albion to entertain the FA Cup specialists

He also has so much energy that teammate Theo Walcott described him as a Durcacell bunny! As for the Seagulls, well I think it's fair to say they aren't quite the same team. Leo Ulloa announced his arrival in the UK with a goal on his debut and the Albion were close to forcing a replay. Although the odds are stacked against Chris Hughton's side, if they show the same quality and determination as Wednesday night they could pull off an upset. Wenger is likely to make changes and Hughton's players will want to show they can cut the mustard against top internationals. years later, pioneering manager Herbert Chapman led his men to a 2-0 triumph over former club Huddersfield Town. Arsenal have lifted the famous old trophy 11 times in total, a record they share with Manchester United. Albion’s first senior meeting with the Gunners was also a FA Cup tie, in 1935. Such was their pulling power – they were heading for a third successive First Division title – many locals were put off by a potential Goldstone crush and the crowd for the 2-0 reverse was only just over 22,000. It would be another 53 years before the London outfit would visit Hove again for a FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, Garry Nelson’s acrobatic scissor kick wasn’t enough to give Barry Lloyd’s third-tier outfit a famous victory. Of course, Albion famously visited Highbury in 1983 but Arsenal were nowhere to be seen. Locking horns with
Sheffield Wednesday for their first-ever FA Cup semi-final, a Wembley date with Manchester United was secured by Jimmy Case’s breathtaking free kick and Michael Robinson’s smart finish. The first league meeting between the clubs was the opening home game in Albion’s inaugural First Division season in 1979 – Arsenal were ruthless and ran out 4-0 winners! The next seven top-flight meetings between the two teams garnered no victories, or goals, for Alan Mullery’s men and after an 81year wait, Albion finally beat the north Londoners, 2-1 at home, in 1982. History repeated itself just a month into the next season. Hughton’s men boast a hattrick of recent victories over capital clubs but slipped up in an entertaining – if frustrating – game against Brentford last weekend. Can Albion stop the on-fire Gunners?
