An Independent View When you read this, there will be six days - or fewer - to go before decisions are taken that will affect the lives of everyone in our city. The meeting of "Budget Council" on Thursday (February 26) should be a landmark moment for the people of Brighton and Hove – and an opportunity for our political leaders show their mettle. As a city, we have never needed leadership more than now. In recent months, Brighton & Hove Independent has tried to highlight the financial crisis almost all of us face - and almost none of us created. It has also invited citizens to have their say. The latest results after nearly 2,000 contributions are revealed today (see left). More will be disclosed online. The truth is no conceivable increase in council tax in a single year can bridge the £26 million funding gap. We have done our best to highlight the choices offered by the three main political parties

Children with designs on Brighton Fringe

Still six days left to have your say > Continued from page 1 and by the 54 councillors who will gather at Hove Town Hall next week: ■ A 5.9% council tax rise proposed by a Green Party - 20 councillors - allegedly determined to resist government cuts by all possible means. Almost. ■ A council tax freeze proposed by a Conservative Party - 18 councillors - determinedly fixed on doing things differently. But how? ■ A 1.9% rise proposed by a Labour Party - 13 councillors fiercely opposed to government cuts. Unless, of course, the government is a post-May-7 Labour government.

Today, we highlight the admirable campaign (see page 25) to keep all our children's centres open. We pay tribute not only to the campaigners, but also to The Argus newspaper for its sustained support for this excellent grassroots campaign. For our part, we have also highlighted the shadow hanging over our third-sector organisations, our youth services, and our 16,000 poorest households hit by a 76% increase in council tax - pushed through by Labour's wrong-headed prioritisation of weakening the Council Tax Reduction scheme. So, after weeks of politicking, what are we left with? More despair than hope? More questions than answers? If the Green Party is so

determined to resist all cuts by all possible means, why support a budget that contains any cuts? If the Conservative Party wants to absorb all government funding cuts and freeze council tax, how long will they adopt such a stance? Until there is no flesh left on the bone? Until there is no bone? If the Labour Party rails against - and exaggerates - the cost of a government-imposed referendum, if a 5.9% rise is voted through, will a Labour government remove the 1.9% threshold? And if the council tax is so regressive, why does it propose an increase that is four times the rate of inflation? Nearly 2,000 people have had their say so far, see page 26

Exclusive: Be the first in the city to read about Caroline Lucas and her ’honourable’ friends She is, according Naomi Klein - the Canadian social activist - "one of the world's bravest and most principled politicians". Caroline Lucas, elected in 2010 as the first Green MP, has written a remarkable book - entitled Honourable Freinds? and published next month by Portobello Books - about her first term in parliament and the fight for political change. To find out what the book reveals about what it's like to be an outsider who finds herself inside the corridors of power, make sure you pick up next week's Brighton & Hove Independent. In an exclusive interview, Ms Lucas provides a fascinating insight into the challenges she has faced as MP for Brighton Pavilion - and what she has to say about the Green-led city council. To win one of five free copies, visit www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk.

A 12-year-old artist from Fiveways in Brighton has won first prize in Brighton Fringe’s Family Guide cover competition. Kitty Lloyd, a student at Dorothy Stringer School, beat 90 entrants; 10 shortlisted designs are pictured above. Kitty's artwork will appear on 80,000 copies of the guide, available from March 4, when tickets go on general sale. The competition called for aspiring young artists to submit designs that capture the creative energy of England’s biggest arts festival, inspired by the phrase “It’s showtime”. Kitty said: “When I heard the theme for the competition, I immediately thought about the circus. I developed it from there, using paper, coloured card and water colours to make a collage.” For more information, visit: www.brightonfringe.org.

Women set to spring forward with festival of work in digital Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Spring Forward - the country's only festival focused on celebrating women working in digital - returns next month, having more than doubled in size since last year's inaugural event. The festival coincides with Women’s History Month and aims at empowering and encouraging more women into digital media as well as to celebrate the past achievements of women in the sector. Viviana Doctorovich, the festival director and a leading userexperience designer, said: “Whilst efforts are currently being made to address the gender imbalance in the digital industry, I believe many women are still struggling to find a voice in a mainly maledominated workplace. The aim of Spring Forward is help women find that voice and encourage them to join this fulfilling and creative industry. My hope is that the festival will act as a springboard for the creation of a support network that’ll encourage women into taking a more active role in shaping the future of the digital industry.” This year’s biggest festival event - organised by She Says Brighton and having sold out in 12 hours - is “Speak Up!” on March 24 at Hotel du Vin. It will feature talks with four managing directors from Brighton’s leading digital companies, including Caroline Walmsley, managing director at Brightwave. If the Green Party cannot hold onto both of its two seats in Regency, then they will be lucky to be anything other than an irrelevant rump in Brighton and Hove politics after May 7. To give them their best chance, they have selected the party's new "golden couple" to take the place of the double Kitcat: Councillors Ania and Jason, both of whom are standing down. Councillor Alex Phillips, with the left-wing passion associated with working-class politics on her native Merseyside, must be favourite to top the poll - even though she has shuffled across the border from her current neighbouring ward of Goldsmid. Meanwhile, Tom Druitt - the new chair of Brighton and Hove Green Party - is hoping to become part of the second successive husband-andwife duo in Regency. The founder of the Big Lemon bus company married Councillor Phillips last August. The Kitcats secured majorities of about 1,000 in 2011 - and even the travails of the minority administration are unlikely to have undermined Green support sufficiently to enable Labour's two new candidates to turn the tables at their first attempt. For UKIP - unlikely to attract much support in a city-centre ward such as Regency - are represented by Robert Kimbell, a prolific Twitterer who describes himself as a "well-travelled geopolitics junkie and EU-antagonist". Curiously, you will note, his Twitter "handle" is @RedHotSquirrel.

1983 | Sunday, February 20 FA Cup victories for Albion over Newcastle United and Manchester City were rewarded with a fifth-round tie…at Football League champions Liverpool! No team had won at Anfield for almost a year and Albion had been victorious on the road – at St James’s Park in the third round – only once all season. Amazingly, Gerry Ryan put the Seagulls ahead just after the half hour. Australian Craig Johnston equalised with an acrobatic strike with 20 minutes remaining, only for former Kop favourite Jimmy Case to blast home the winner from 20 yards just 60 seconds later.

Interim principal for City College The governors of City College Brighton and Hove have announced the appointment an interim principal and chief executive officer. Monica Box, a principal for nearly 15 years, will join the college on Wednesday (February 25). Ms Box has spent the whole of her working life in education, starting out as a teacher in a Manchester High School. She progressed to head of department roles and a deputy principal position, before taking up her first role as principal in 2001 at Calderdale College in West Yorkshire. She has worked as an interim principal, providing leadership at times of change to a number of colleges, including City College Manchester, South Kent College, and Kensington and Chelsea College; most recently, she was interim chief executive at Barnfield Federation. Ms Box said: "When I visited last week, I was very impressed with the passion and pride of governors and staff for both the college and the communities served by the college. "This kind of commitment is half the battle in any organisational success and I very much look forward to assisting in the creation of a bright future for City College Brighton and Hove."

@BrightonIndy

Julie Nerney, chair of City College’s board of governors, said: “Monica brings a wealth of experience, coupled with a strong people focus and the board are confident that she will bring clarity, focus and an open leadership style to the college over the coming months. “This appointment will create the time and space for the recruitment process of our new permanent post-holder, which will start in early March. We will also be looking to make permanent appointments to this post and the two other vacancies in our executive team.” Lynn Thackway left as principal of the college “for family reasons”, after months of public concern about the college’s finances and its failure to pay suppliers.

Open Market on short list for awards The Open Market in London Road is in line for a series of awards. It has been nominated in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors South East Awards later this year: best regeneration, best community involvement, and best tourism/leisure project. Councillor Geoffrey Bowden said: “The Open Market is an excellent example of regeneration and community involvement which has been many years in the making."

Monica Box has been a principal for nearly 15 years

After the Storm by Jane Lythell What better place than the cramped, claustrophobic confines of a yacht for the setting of a thriller? Lythell has done it again, with a meticulously-planned and plotted slow-burner of a book. Rob and Anna meet Owen and Kim on the coast of Belize; they hire them and their old sailing boat to set off for an island in the Caribbean for some sun, sea and adventure. Oh dear. You just know they would have been better off in Tuscany. The geographical setting of this great book is ridden with illusion - and the front that the sleazy portside towns keep up for tourists is sinister in the extreme. Charged with tension and

doubts and questions: Why doesn’t Owen sleep? Why does Kim keep a knife zipped into her money belt? (Of course, I answered those questions early on, only to be proved wrong and wrong again.) With four people on board a yacht in the sunny Caribbean, it should be a holiday of a lifetime, with rum cocktails and fresh fish for supper. But early on, the sense of dread and disaster haunt every page, till you are practically shrieking at them all to get off the boat, get to an airport, and fly home to safety. A graduate of the University of Westminster University, with an MA in Photojournalism, she has exhibited her work in Brighton, London, and across the southeast. The photographs above are included in a "I'm not voting because..." photobook that has been exhibited at the University of Westminster and at the Ambika P3 Gallery in London - as well as many other places. Ms Felkin said: "During the last general election, over a third of the UK population refused to vote; some out of apathy, many as a protest. Russell Brand identified himself publicly as a non-voter. As his words spread on social media, I witnessed there was a positive consensus about not voting in my community." Explaining her hopes for the project, she went on: “I want these images to raise awareness, promote solidarity amongst the people. Some people spoil papers, others don’t care, many want to be detached from the system, a rising number are campaigning for another box on the ballot paper - NOTA, none of the above.“ Ms Felkin is currently working on a photographic essay about women who choose not to have children; she is looking for possible participants. Other projects include one that documents difficulties facing teenagers in Brighton and one, entitled “Street Mother” about a relationship between two people who met in a homeless hostel.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Clearly, something had to be done. Drivers were going too fast - down Viaduct Road, one of the main gateways into the city - with more than 11,000 vehicles a day passing through what is, it is deemed, a residential road. Let's put some planters in the road. That should do it. Perhaps not. Better put some arrows on the planters, in case drivers don't see them in the less-than-well-lit lit road. University

Plans to keep the Eaton Place GP surgery open have failed after time has run out. The Brighton Health and Wellbeing Centre was set to step in to keep the surgery open at the end of this month. In a statement, NHS England said: “Due to a range of factors, it is no longer viable for the practice to go ahead with their plan to open a branch surgery at Eaton Place.”

Plans to re-work the main road through Valley Gardens will be halted if Labour is elected to run Brighton and Hove City Council. The party pledged to suspend and review all Greeninitiated transport schemes, including the Viaduct Road trial, if it wins a majority of seats in May’s election. It says it is concerned that the scheme commits the council to longterm funding that it may not be able to afford.

Mather's have teamed up with Charis Williams - the local artist, designer and television presenter - who is running her first halfmarathon in Brighton on Sunday (February 22) to raise money for RISE, a charity set up in Brighton 20 years ago to help people suffering the effects of domestic abuse. Charis said: "I'm really pleased I can do my bit to help RISE, who are such a fantastic charity and have helped me in the past. I was one of RISE's speakers at their 'One Billion Rising' event last Saturday, too - which is a global activist movement to stop violence towards women and

girls. It was fantastic to see such a great turnout and support for the cause" Charis was commissioned by Mather's Ice Cream to design and fabricate an art-deco window frame from salvaged materials and come up with an idea for an eye-catching display unit for the parlour. Her retro mannequin display is inspired by the usherette girls of the early days of cinema who would sell food from a tray that hang around their necks. In return, Mather's have come up with a delicious limitededition ice-cream - Black Forest cherry cheesecake - that is on sale until one week after the half-marathon. All proceeds from the sale of this flavour will be donated to RISE. In addition, you can help by giving money by way of Charis's JustGiving page: www.justgiving. com/charis-williams.

It could have been worse. When discussed at last month's London Road Local Action Team meeting, Martin Heath, the city council's road safety team manager, gave a presentation. We publish some of his slides above. How about "vertical" options? Screens - like the planters, only taller? How about "horizontal" options? A build-out of the pavement (shown in blue)? Or a pavement build-out, with trees on one side? It's a puzzle. But we know council officers have the matter in hand. Meanwhile, mind how you go. Labour

Pink bus visit National media – of a certain political persuasion – were quick to mock. The very idea! Women talking to women about politics. And the colour was shocking. Pink. Labour’s “pink bus” tour stopped off at Rottingdean yesterday (Thursday). On board was Harriet Harman, Labour’s deputy leader, and Nancy Platts, the party’s parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown. The venue was the Open Art Café and Gallery in Nevill Road. Ms Harman said: "The Open Art Café was an ideal place for Nancy Platts and me to meet women to discuss their concerns. We chatted to women who did vote and those who had never voted. What came over very clearly is the importance of having Nancy

in Parliament - someone who left school at 18 and who is the opposite of a 'professional politician'." Ms Platts said: “Harriet Harman’s ‘Woman-to-Woman’ tour has been a great opportunity to get together with lots of women in Rottingdean and learn more about their concerns and their hopes for the future. "We spoke with a range

of women from different background, to young mums about childcare and the NHS and businesswomen about what Labour can do for small businesses. If elected as the MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, it would be an honour to be the first women to represent this constituency and I will ensure that women’s voices are heard in parliament.”

Bin strikes

Brighton and Hove City Council has received £8 million of government funding for the Valley Gardens scheme following a Coast-to-Capital Local Enterprise Partnership meeting. The scheme will create a traffic system where general traffic will be restricted to the eastern side of the central junction round Victoria Gardens, while the western side will be reserved for buses and taxis.

Strikes could continue after talks between Brighton and Hove City Council and union representatives remain unresolved. The dispute is centred on bin lorry drivers' pay. Richard Bradley, the council’s head of city clean and parks, said: “Under equal pay legislation, we cannot raise pay in one area of the council without justification and without applying an unaffordable cost across the entire organisation.”

Planners turn down scheme for student flats at Vogue Gyratory Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

A scheme to build a five-storey block of student flats on the site of a hand car-wash at the Vogue Gyratory in Brighton has been rejected unanimously. The proposal for 65 self-

contained studio flats included communal areas, cycle parking, a plant room, and storage for rubbish and recycling. The applicant - McLaren, the property developer - has already started work on a four-storey building on a neighbouring site. And it hopes to build another block on the other side of Lewes Road in the centre of Vogue Gyratory.

Fourteen people living in neighbouring homes in Gladstone Place were among the objectors to the building, which they said would tower over their homes. Brighton and Hove City Council planning committee was told that the site - at 119 Lewes Road, between The Bear pub and The Gladstone - was in an area with many houses in multiple occupation (HMOs). The area is

popular with students. Jim Tarzey, the planning agent and a director of Pegasus Planning Group, said the building would sit in a tall-building corridor and that there were taller buildings along Lewes Road. Mr Tarzey added that the proposed purpose-built managed student accommodation was needed in Lewes Road. It would free up family homes, he said, and contribute to the city’s housing supply. Councillor Les Hamilton, a Labour councillor who is a former chair of the planning committee, was one of a number of members to set out reservations - although several welcomed the scheme in principle. Cllr Hamilton criticised the

18-square-metre size of the proposed student flats - which, conventionally, would be twice the size. He said: “There’s too much development on this site.” After the 12 committee members unanimously rejected the schemel, Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, the chair, told the developers he hoped that they would be in touch with planning officials to discuss how the scheme could move forward. Afterwards, McLaren said that it would be in touch with the council planning department with the aim of submitting a revised application. If this is done within six months, the company would avoid having to pay another £25,000 application fee.

appealing, there are a several reasons why this is probably not a good idea for most: ■ Whilst 25% of the fund is tax-free, the other 75% is taxable at your marginal rate. This means that it is added to other income and taxed in the same way as a salary. Some will have a nasty shock when they find themselves paying higher rate tax on the withdrawal at 40% or even 45% for larger funds. ■ Taking out a large chunk could mean there will be less to provide a future pension income, and potentially an impoverished old age. ■ Taking money out of a pension fund and investing elsewhere is likely to mean moving it from the tax efficient environment of a pension fund to an investment where growth may be taxed. ■ Money in a pension can be passed on free of inheritance tax. ■ Taking your pension fund may affect any State Benefits Whilst many welcome the chance to take higher income or take out lump sums it is something that should only be done after careful consideration, and sound advice. The Government has set up PensionWise to offer a free guidance service, although this will not be a substitute for taking proper financial advice from a qualified adviser. Pensions as an Inheritance The new rules have also opened up new opportunities for people to pass on pension funds to their families, with much more favourable tax consequences. From April, when someone dies before age 75 their chosen beneficiaries will be able to take income or lump sums from the pension completely free of tax. On death after 75 income taken will be taxed as income based on the recipients’ tax status. And if the beneficiaries don’t fully use the pension funds, they in turn can pass them down to their children or grandchildren.

A Time to Invest These changes give plenty of flexibility and choice and this can only be a good thing in terms of encouraging people to

A straitened Prussian prince fails to secure an heiress from Brighton Graham Chainey

Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, London, 1827

Prince Hermann von PücklerMuskau sounds like a character in a satirical novel. But he really existed. Described as a “rogue, rover and rake, handsome, dashing and brave”, he came to England in the 1820s looking for a suitable heiress to revive his exhausted finances. He mixed with the highest society, travelled everywhere, nearly married several times (there was always some hitch to his hitch), and wrote home to his beloved ex-wife (it was a divorce of convenience) long, witty accounts of all he saw and did. In the end, it was these letters, published to international acclaim, outselling for a while even Goethe and Byron, that were to make his name and secure the desired fortune. He made several visits to Brighton, and courted a local girl, one Miss Gibbins, very pretty,

accomplished, and in possession of £50,000 - the minimum figure he would settle for. Unfortunately, her parents proved detestable - the mother was stuck-up, the father “a dogmatic old pedant, boring and stingy” - and her insistence they must all live together ended it. The proposal he drafted remained unsent. He admired the climate of Brighton, which he called a “large, clean and very cheerful town”. On his first day, in February 1827, he walked on Marine Parade, called on acquaintances, and, having brought his own horses, rode out. “Vainly did I look around for a tree,” he says, echoing Dr Johnson’s celebrated lament. “The country is perfectly naked; nothing to be seen but hilly downs covered with short turf.” But he rhapsodised over the marine sunset. The Royal Pavilion, he thought, resembled something off a chess board; its removal “would be no great subject of lamentation”. Walks by the sea and on the new Chain Pier were more agreeable.

He visited Mahomed’s baths, “where people are shampooed after the Turkish fashion. I found the interior arrangements very European. The treatment is like that of the Russian vapour baths, only I think not so good.” He admired their method of steamdrying linen. Two days later, he rode again at dusk, until “the moon rose cloudless and brilliant over the waters. I now turned my horse’s head from the hills down to the sea, and rode five or six miles, about the distance to Brighton, hard on the edge of the waves along the sandy shore. The tide was coming in, and my horse sometimes shied when a wave, crowned with snowy foam, rolled under his feet and quickly retreated as if in sport.” Almack’s ball, at the Ship Hotel that night, was by contrast illlighted, miserably furnished, with everyone dressed in black and dancing joylessly. At a private ball a few days later, he found the crush intolerable, with hundreds packed into a tiny space, but

as he was “squeezed” against numerous pretty girls (his two passions in life were pretty girls and landscape gardening), he was content. This time, he stayed till four, “to see the whole thing”, unable to take his eyes off “a fat lady of 55, dressed in black velvet with white trimmings, and a turban with floating ostrich feathers, who waltzed like a Bacchante”. Next day he climbed a windmill to view “the whole panorama of Brighton”, with hundreds of fishing boats contending against a gale, the mill rocking as its wheels turned. Another time he visited Mrs Fitzherbert, “a very dignified and delightful woman, universally beloved and respected”. And he records the fate of a man who, crossed in love, threw himself off the pier (probably the very first such casualty), even though “only yesterday he was dancing as if stung by a tarantula”. Give a dog a home ¨ campaign

@BrightonIndy

Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. This week is Dixie. www.dogtrust.org.uk

www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk

Factfile: “Dixie is an 8-year-old female Crossbreed. “She loves spending time with her favourite people and she is equally a big hit at Dogs Trust with the staff as she is very affectionate and fun. “Dixie is fearful of strangers so her trainers have spent lots of time teaching her things that make her feel more comfortable whilst introducing new people. “She is looking for an all adult home with no visiting children and would need to be the only pet.”

Senior pet moments Susan Gregersen Hospice & Emergency Vet Due to improved veterinary care, knowledge and dietary habits, our pets are now living longer than they ever have before. One consequence of this is that pets, along with their owners and vets, are faced with a whole new set of age-related problems usually depending on the species and breed in question. Just like humans, animals - once they get to a certain age – also forget things or get confused. Animals can certainly suffer from “petzheimers” as I like to call it, which is very similar to what some people suffer from. The difference is that it is not through conversation we notice the signs of this Canine or

Feline “Cognitive Dysfunction”, but rather through altered behaviour and change in habits. The affected animal is suddenly behaving oddly, vocalising randomly, soiling inappropriately, sleeping a lot – or not at all - and simply just being a completely different “person”. Senior tip of the week: Is your senior pet suddenly behaving strangely then it may be worth contacting your vet as there may be supportive measures and treatment for your “absentminded” senior pet. Susan Gregersen is an Emergency and Hospice Vet and also the founder of Vets2Home Veterinary Service – helping families say goodbye at home 24/7

Sing your new song! Vocal coach and singing teacher Jacquie Currie returns to offer singing lessons in central Brighton, for beginners to advanced level, in either a group or one-to-one setting. Many budding young singers start out at an early age. With support from family and friends, singers can gain the self-belief and confidence that helps them bravely step out and explore what they can and eventually, want to do. Sometimes it can take a long time for enough confidence to build in a person and often these are the people with hidden abilities. Both positive and negative life experiences can test the individual journey and having a sensitive and skilled teacher can assist very much in the progression of that journey. No matter your age, your occupation, your level of singing ability or your favourite types of music, professionally trained vocal coach, Jacquie Currie, can help you find your voice.

Friday, February 20 2015 Brighton & Hove Independent 23

@BrightonIndy

Jacquie's method of teaching focuses on harnessing and developing a feel-good factor which enables you to most naturally and comfortably express your voice. Movement and free dance is involved in every lesson, which previous students have enjoyed, stating they feel liberated and able to release any tension, in a comfortable setting, to a variety of musical styles. Jacquie comments: “My group classes and individual lessons are available to all. You don’t have to have ballet shoes (or any previous ability) to come! Whether you're starting out, or are professionally trained but require some quality time to focus on your voice in a new way, you may benefit from my practice. Additionally, public speakers, senior leadership teams, students and those who have to present to an audience can gain confidence through professional vocal coaching.” For further information, visit: www.brightonsinginglessons.com or to book your lesson please call 07876 031 822 or email info@brightonsinginglessons.com

Students win £1,500 for mobile phone invention Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy An invention to prevent people from losing their mobile phones has earned a team of Brighton University students a £1,500 prize. The team - led by Prince Ansah, mechanical engineering student - invented a wristband device called Recall. It sounds an alarm when the wearer strays more than 10 yards from their phone. Mr Ansah’s team of engineering students picked up the first prize in the Santander Universities’ 60-second pitch awards. The awards support and encourage university students and graduates to present their business ideas in a creative manner. Brighton University was the only university with two finalists. The other contender was Melanie Smith, a graphic communication graduate from the university’s partner college, Sussex Coast in Hastings. She was shortlisted for her new idea called Story, a mini-suitcase full of ideas to help children find their imaginations to develop stories. Mr Ansah and his co-founders - Jhonny Herrera, Alex Harrison, Atharsh Jeyanandam, Benedict

Prince Ansah led the Brighton University team

Bowen, James Thompson and Kevin Raivire-Grisot - received support from Beepurple, the university’s entrepreneurship programme. Mr Ansah, who is featured in the video pitch, said: “We are still amazed by the result. I would like to thank Santander Universities on behalf of the group for this award. “This helps us look forward to the next chapter. It is a great opportunity for us and we are ready to put 100 per cent of our efforts to launch this product into the market.”

Simon Bray, managing director of Santander Universities UK, said: “Mobile phones have become indispensible in our daily lives and losing it means losing our contacts, agenda, photos, emails and more. Recall is a great idea to ensure you never leave your mobile phone behind. “In addition, the University of Brighton team did a great job in pitching the idea in just 60 seconds which is one of the main judging points of the competition. We hope the award money helps the team launching the product into the market.”

Q&A with the Montefiore Hospital's consultants Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Mr Karim El Sakka, answers general questions on varicose veins What are varicose veins? “Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that appear near the surface of the skin, often found in the legs. They are a common problem.”

Can they be treated? ”Yes, there are a variety of effective procedures to close or remove the affected veins. Some of these can be performed in an outpatient setting under local anaesthetic, where the patient can expect a very quick recovery and should be back to normal activities in no time.”

What causes them? “Veins contain sets of one way valves which prevent blood from flowing backwards. If these valves become weakened or damaged, blood can collect and pool in the veins. This results in the vein enlarging and becoming ‘varicose’.”

Can they be avoided? “There’s not much you can do to avoid getting varicose veins, however exercising regularly, keeping to a healthy weight and trying to avoid standing for long periods of time can all help to maintain vein health. If you have any concerns about varicose veins, it is best to contact your GP or a vascular surgeon.”

Are they serious? “They may cause some discomfort and symptoms such as itching, swelling and aching legs and may be unsightly, but varicose veins are rarely serious.”

Mr El Sakka has weekly clinics at the Spire Montefiore Hospital in Hove. For further information please visit: www.spiremontefiore.com or call 01273 828148

March to save our children's centres Brighton Children's Centre Campaign is rallying people across the city against proposed cuts to council-run children's centres. The campaign – helped by impressive support from The Argus newspaper - has already had some success: Hollingbury and Patcham Children’s Centre and City View Children’s Centre in Elm Grove no longer face closure after “overwhelming feedback” to the city council. Two other centres, however, remain at risk: West Hove and Cornerstone. Pinaki Ghoshai, the council’s executive director of children’s services, said the council now plans to save £510,000 - instead of £779,000 - from the children’s centre budget. Leila Erin-Jenkins who recently founded a Facebook campaign group with her sister, Felicity, said: "We want everyone who cares about children to join our protest on Thursday (February 26), starting in New Road, Brighton, next to Pavilion Gardens, marching to the crucial budget meeting at Hove

Town Hall. Councillors need to understand how devastating these cuts are. They'll damage the lives of thousands of families and pull apart communities." As part of Brighton & Hove Independent’s Have your Say series, here are some voices of parents: Tony, who visits children's centres with his young twin boys, has spoken to parents in Hangleton and Mile Oak, where he lives: "The centres have been my lifesaver. I was thrown in at the deep end, when I became a stay-at-home dad. My wife's a nurse and childcare is just too expensive for us. " Rani, who suffered postnatal depression, said: "I needed somewhere local and informal to meet other mums, not a fivemonth wait for a specialised postnatal depression support group. The drop-in group I attended was an utter lifeline for me.” Naomi, with an autistic child, from Portslade, said: "It's the mix of parents I like. Just being able to join in and be welcomed by staff, who understand the strain on us as a family and my son’s

SICK! FESTIVAL CONFRONTS THE PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES OF LIFE AND DEATH SICK! Festival is not a theatre festival, although you will find many outstanding international performances in the programme. It’s not a dance, film or literature festival, although these art forms are richly represented. It’s not a science festival but you will find many scientists, researchers and doctors within the programme. It’s not a conference, but the programme will include debates, talks and discussions. SICK! is the point where all these come together and everyone can join in the conversation. SICK! is a festival that confronts the challenges of life and death and how we survive them, or in some cases, how we don’t. It’s about challenges that are sometimes rooted in bodies and minds that fail us, sometimes in the complexities of living as members of an imperfect society. SICK! is about bearing witness to the realities of our lives and shining a light on urgent issues that often remain taboo or misunderstood. It’s about the expertise of professionals and the understanding that comes with personal experience. This is your brief snapshot of the festival programme, introducing some of the issues being addressed and picking out a few highlights. For the full programme, visit the SICK! Festival website.

MARCH 2-25 2O15 www.sickfestival.com

SICK! INTERVIEW As SICK! Festival enters its third year, growing from a small pilot festival in 2013, to a major international event taking place simultaneously in Brighton and Manchester, Artistic Director Helen Medland and Director of Development Tim Harrison reflect on what led them to create this rather unusual festival: What made you start SICK! Festival? "We wanted to present work that connects to everybody in a really deep way, and deals with some of the big challenges that we all have to get through in life. Reflecting on our own lives, we realised that, whilst our most difficult experiences are very personal, there’s also something in this that ties us all together as human beings. "We wanted to do this by presenting fantastic work by groundbreaking international artists."

What does SICK! Festival aim to achieve? "We know we’re not going to be able to cure illnesses or solve all society’s problems. We’re realistic. But there is a real need to get certain issues out in the open. Sometime the arts can help us by allowing us to laugh at these problems. Sometimes a performance or film might give a glimpse of a hopeful future. Other times, it’s enough to just bear witness to the fact that these experiences are real and important to us. We want to bring people together and hope that, by being bold about issues that are often taboo, the festival can in a small way help us all come to terms with them." What makes your festival different to the others? "Many festivals focus on a particular art-form, theatre, dance,

film and so on. Our starting point is not the art form but personal experience. This year for example, we’re looking at issues like sex and sexuality, abuse and suicide. Really quite challenging areas. We like to look at these experiences from all kinds of different angles, through the arts, through debates, from the perspective of doctors, researchers, charity workers and, of course, people personally effected by the themes that we’re dealing with."

LITERATURE – PRESENTED WITH DARK & STORMY

IN FRONT OF THE CHILDREN...

Curated by novelist Julia Crouch, The SICK! literature strand brings together diverse panels of authors who have addressed the issues considered in each event through their writing – be it fiction, graphic novels, academic writing or memoir. Expect the discussions to be wide-ranging, encompassing personal experience, theory and imagination. Does the easy online accessibility of pornography pose a threat to young people? Does it stand in the way of developing a healthy attitude to love and sex, or does it provide useful information for beginners? These panels bring together writers with wide-ranging interests in sex and sexuality for a full and frank discussion.

suicide

TELL ME LOVE IS REAL

Too often, we are unable to understand the thoughts and experiences of people contemplating suicide, as the people we need to ask are no longer with us. We are unsure whether we could have done anything to help, or if that person would have wanted any intervention. Suicide seems like the most deeply personal of actions, but it often seems like a dramatic public statement. However private the act and however personal the reasons, suicide is an issue deeply rooted in our sense of community. SICK! Festival confronts these issues, the stigma and the silence that surround suicide. What are the personal issues that affect the choice to take one’s own life? What responsibility do we have as individuals and as a community to those close to us? Research tells us that people considering suicide have doubts about it. It shouldn't be regarded as an inevitable outcome. Part of a person considering ending their life wants to live, as well as the part of them that wants to die. But sometimes rules of confidentiality can mean that people don't get the help they might need from friends or family - this can result in a tragic outcome. Chris Brown Director, Grassroots Suicide Prevention

ZACHARY OBERZAN (USA) march 16, 8PM

abuse Physical and sexual abuse, neglect and mental cruelty inflict immense physical and psychological damage, often behind closed doors. The harrowing consequences often ripple through generations and communities, unspoken and unaddressed. Should it be seen as the individual responsibility of the perpetrator or is it a question that we all need to address? How can we give a voice to the abused and remove the social pressures and legal incredulity that often lead them to remain silent? Fear of violence, social stigma, protection towards others affected and the psychological erasing of experiences all contribute to the silence. SICK! Festival 2015 will draw on research and personal experiences to better understand the situation that allows abuse to happen and remain hidden.

sex & sexuality

Sex and sexuality offer some of life's most intense and joyous experiences, yet somehow cut through to our darkest recesses, emerging in anguish, neurosis, inequality and division. The festival will ask the difficult question and investigate the issues that affect our experience of sex in 21st century society. While sex sells and consequently pervades our media, it seems that there is still much that goes unsaid. SICK! Festival 2015 will draw on research into the nature of sexual attraction, consider the sexual gaze in our visual culture, question the psychology and dynamics of sexual relations and reflect on the way in which our sexual actions come to define our identities. Reflecting the full range of genders and sexualities, we ask to what extent are we free to explore and enjoy our sexual desires, and how much is our experience coloured by social codes?

DEBATES SICK! Festival aims to shine a light on urgent issues that often remain taboo or misunderstood. As part of the festival programme, some of these harder to discuss subjects will be debated while drawing in relevant expertise in each field. Itai, a recent film-school graduate promptly moved back to Israel to spend every moment he could with his dying mother. During that time he shot hours of film and hundreds of pictures, documenting her final days. In a starkly simple yet deeply profound original work, Erdal draws on his remarkable approach to stage lighting whilst reflecting on the events following his mother asking him to take her life.

There will be a particular focus as well on fresh new talent from the United Kingdom. With so many artists, dedicated tattoo fans can find their perfect tattoo over the weekend. High on the list of people to catch this year: American big-hitters Dan Smith, Bugs, Eric Gonzalez, Thomas Hooper, BJ Betts, and Big Meas. Newcomers this year are Greece’s Dirty Roses and Sake Tattoo Crew, who will be offering their unique styles of tattoo art. Flying the flag for Great Britain, Cally Jo and the godfathers of British tattooing, Lal Hardy and George Bone, will be in attendance. Lal, as well as Adam Heys, will be offering workshops on the first day of the convention, in addition to others sharing their expertise on tattoo history, art, and culture. Also watch out for up-and-coming artists including Math, Craig Ridley, Swambo, Kode, and Ryan Evans. Art-lovers will also thoroughly enjoy the engaging work of Spain’s Ramon Maiden, who brings his 2015 art exhibition to show in Europe for the first time. The Brighton Tattoo Convention always features top-

quality tattoo competitions. But, this year, the focus is purely on work completed at the show. The competitions are open to all tattoo styles, sexes, and sizes, independently judged by tattooists, throughout the show. This year’s completely bespoke artist awards are being designed and handmade by Dale, at Rotary Works. Keeping us entertained will be live music legends The Meteors, opening the show on Friday night. Definitely one gig not to miss. Saturday sees us in party mode with the stage hosting The Sex Pistols Experience, as well as King Salami and the Cumberland 3. On Sunday, there’s a free after-show party, hosted by the Brighton Rockabilly Rumble Club, all held on site at the Hilton. Brighton’s very own Stay Sick DJ will be spinning the whole weekend, with further acts and bands to be announced. Food and drink offerings will also be expanded, with handmade vegan cakes, great coffee, and specially-created cocktails added to the mix - alongside a bar that’s >> Continued on page 32

February

The Brighton Tattoo Convention, after seven years of evolving into a premier international show, will bring a burst of colour to the heart of the English winter with exciting new changes and additions - while keeping the elements that have made it a success: stellar tattoo artists, engaging entertainment, thoughtful workshops and exhibits, unique vendors, and a fun and lively atmosphere. For the first time since its start in 2008, the convention will be held over three days, kicking off today (Friday) at 3pm and continuing all the way through to finish in the early hours of Monday (February 23). The tattooing, competitions, performances, seminars, workshops, and gallery shows will all take place in the largest exhibition space in southern England at the Hilton Brighton Metropole hotel directly on the seafront in the centre of the city. This year, there will be more than 350 world-class artists showcasing from 16 countries, from as far afield as Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Croatia, Poland, Scandinavia, Italy, Greece, and the United States.

The Places I Eat

The Hampton is a winner with Heart & Soul Food Co Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn

I have always had a very on-off love affair with The Hampton on Upper North Street. For now, though, the romance is firmly back on, thanks in part to a revamped menu and kitchen from The Heart & Soul Food Co. Operating since last December,The Heart & Soul Food Co serve homecooked Southern-style American food. Think filling the void where Momma Cherrie’s left and you are halfway there. Leonie Jani - the head chef who has cooked in kitchens across the world, including Australia and Spain - is keen to show her passion for sharing plates and has constructed a concept menu that emphasises this. Choose from soul food classics such as glazed ribs, buffalo wings, jumbo shrimp, pulled pork, corn on the cob, and sweet-potato wedges, all available as side orders or mains. The Hampton is a great pub to socialise with friends in, making the sharing concept ideal. Presented in a mixture of terracotta tapas-style dishes, wooden boards and bowls, ordering a platter was the ideal way to sample The Hampton’s food menu. The honey bourbon ribs (£6) were practically melting off the bone and had a well-balanced sticky and sweet sauce. The half-rack was wonderfully tender and a standout of the meal. Other meat dishes also fared well: the buffalo wings (£5) come doused in a great homemade peri-peri sauce,

awash with flecks of red chilli; the wings had both crispy skin and succulent flesh. I loved the richness and beefiness of the brisket chilli con carne (£6) and the slow-roasted pulled pork (£6) had a touch of sweetness and really melted in the mouth. Served slightly warm, the jumbo shrimp (£7.50) were butterflied and swimming in a zesty chilli, coriander, and lime dressing. Ordering a seafood dish gave some Ordering a platter was ideal at The Hampton balance to the sharing plates - and it would be great to see other fish and seafood options To read more by Claire Beveridge and available. the Places I Eat Brighton team, visit: The mac ’n’ cheese (£5.50) is made www.placesieatbrighton.com using smoked cheddar, which gives it a really deep flavour, and the portion size was gigantic - both big ticks in my book. We also tried The Heart & Soul’s rice and black-eyed by beans (£2.50), which were good; the coleslaw (£2), however, suffered a major mayonnaise overload and tasted slightly too acidic. Leonie also makes a selection of Before the creation of Brighton sauces (£1), including blue cheese, & Hove Independent - and its chipotle mayo, and a ranch dressing lesser-known rival, with a lower - all of which were excellent, circulation - coffeehouses (and especially the blue cheese. the baristas therein) were the The Heart & Soul Food Co and The nation's only source of news. Edward Lloyd opened the doors of Lloyd's of London on Tower Street in 1688. His coffeehouse was frequented by sailors, ship-owners, and merchants, so he tailored the

Grilled pork chop, beetroot-stained potato, spinach béchamel, with black pudding and pear compote Ingredients One pork chop One potato 100ml milk

100ml olive oil 100ml butter One handful of spinach One beetroot Two pears

50g black pudding, diced Nutmeg Seasoning

Method Cut the potato and cook for 20 minutes with the beetroot to stain the potato. Place the oil and flour together to make a roux; add the milk and bring to boil; simmer for 30 minutes, stirring repeatedly.  Once it's a thick paste, add spinach, and then blitz.  Cut the black pudding and cook in the oven for five minutes.  Place the pear in water and boil until soft; make the compote.  Grill the pork chop and place in oven for eight minutes.

news he provided accordingly. Lloyd's became the "third place" for the shipping industry and customers forged insurance deals over coffee and cake. And they didn't even need highchairs, WiFi, or change for the parking meter. Lloyd's moved to Lombard Street in 1691 and, despite Edward's death in 1713, continued to trade until 1774, when the coffee side of things subsided and The Society of Lloyd's was formed. They're one of those City corporations akin to what we see in The Wolf of Wall Street and an alien concept to us seaside-dwellers. They have members and brokers and underwriters and a whole dictionary of City-speak to help the Oxbridge grads sound more grown-up. Put simply, they deal in insurance. Therefore, they are affected by natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and good oldfashioned asbestos. They've notably insured some pretty

weird stuff in their time - from Marlene Dietrich's legs and Egon Ronay's taste buds, to Merv Hughes's walrus moustache and even a grain of rice. The original Lloyd's of London shopfront is now in the National Maritime Museum and there's one of those blue commemorative plates on the Lombard Street building. It's currently a Sainsbury's, which is a shame, but at least it's not a Tesco. From humble coffeehouse beginnings, Lloyd's now occupies a massive office building on Lime Street, which you've seen if you were subjected to the Mamma Mia! film. It's the office which Pierce Brosnan leaves in "New York" before heading to the Greek island and humiliating himself through the medium of song and ensuring he never gets cast in a musical again. Beauty Pretty Good Thinking by Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan

Natural Products News is produced by a Diversified Communications UK, a Brightonbased publisher and event organiser. Last year, it covered how the natural and organic personal care sector is being driven by health concerns. A Consumer Insights report by Organic Monitor revealed that concerns regarding synthetic chemicals were driving consumers to switch to natural and organic personal care products. Interestingly, although the number of brands has mushroomed in the United Kingdom, established producers still comprise the most sales in every product category. Weleda, Dr Haushcka, and Jason Natural are among the market-leaders. In fact, Weleda’s new Evening Primrose Age Revitalising range has just won a Good Housekeeping "Reader Recommended" award following a month-long trial by readers. The collection is aimed at women in their mid-50s. Its formulations aim to restore radiance and firmness to mature skin, strengthen resilience and improve elasticity. The range specifically supports the changing needs of postmenopausal skin, which can lead to uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, or darker undereye circles. This skin is prone to becoming drier and thinner so deeply penetrating products are key to finding a balance. Essential fatty acid-rich Evening Primrose oil is the base, plus nurturing wheat germ, macadamia, sesame and Inca nut oils, and plant extracts to boost collagen production and cell regeneration, topped off by some marshmallow root to soothe. The three products are Evening Primrose Age Revitalising Day Cream; Evening Primrose Age Revitalising Night Cream; and Evening Primrose Age Revitalising Eye and Lip Cream. The great thing here is affordability as well as credibility; everything is under £20. Plus, I spotted a 20% off deal on www.naturisimo. com - which helps things along nicely. The Evening Primrose Age Revitalising Day Cream has also won a "New for 2015 Platinum Award" from Janey Lee Grace in her pick of the most promising new natural launches for 2015. Sounds good to me, but I’d love to hear what readers think, if you try it, too.

the city is our office Bonett’s

North Ronaldsay (Orkneys) to Paris Cycle/ golf/aikido marathon! Many of you will know of the history and success of Brighton Housing Trust, a critical charity, supporting people on the verge of or suffering from homelessness.

One of its most important arms is the First Base Day Centre. For a long time now, it has been helping people to step up from the bottom rung of the ladder, labelled ‘homeless’, with a wide variety of support www.bht. org.uk/services/first-base-daycentre/ . Last year, in aid of this excellent and unfortunately much needed charity, I cycled from Brighton to Paris in a day, over 130 miles on the bike I use at work: no fancy road bike (!), and raised over £800; the whole team, 7 of us, raised several thousand pounds in total. This year, with a friend, I am going to preface the Brighton – Paris ride with over 1,000 extra miles; from North Ronaldsay in the Orkneys. Yes, it’s a bit crazy and at my age I should know better but… In addition to the cycling, I will be towing a bike trailer with a small bag of golf clubs; yes, really! I am going to challenge local golfers to a round of golf at a variety of courses en route from the Orkneys to Brighton. They have to pay towards the charity

to play…and they can even join the ride for a stage or two. I've started a blog if you want to read about the preparations and the actual trip: www. c r a z y g u yo n a b i k e . c o m / d o c / OrkneystoParis The first round of golf will be at a remote 9-hole course on North Ronaldsay, eulogised by Andrew Greig in his book ‘Preferred Lies’. As we head through Scotland and England, we are hoping that local enthusiasts will join the challenge: golfers, cyclists and aikido players, all taking part in one aspect or another (I am also an aikido instructor and will be running a few aikido classes on the way south too. I am already booked to teach classes in Edinburgh and Manchester!! ). We expect to start from the Orkneys on 1st June and want to play the last round at East Brighton Golf Course on Thursday 18th June. So, if you are a local cyclist or golfer and want to take part, please put the date in your diary now and let me know. The whole trip will be about

1100 miles. We will be selfsupporting on the ride i.e. no back- up, and intend to camp the whole way. You don’t need to take an active part in the event to give to the charity. Jim and I are putting in the hard work and we hope that local people will back this event in aid of First Base Day Centre, always in need of more support,

by giving generously. I have set up a justgiving page: www.justgiving.com/ Paul-Bonett2 for you to make a donation if you wish to support First Base Day Centre. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. Paulbonett@bonetts.co.uk Twitter: @bonettpa

Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Albion face Birmingham City tomorrow (Saturday) looking for the three points needed to build on a pair of away draws Their opponents are winless in seven league and cup games and are experiencing off-the-field turmoil, although those concerns did not prevent the Blues securing a welcome draw with high-flying Middlesbrough on Wednesday. As far as the Albion are concerned, the feeling persists that in isolation draws at Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday represent credible returns but in the wider context of the club’s league position, away draws will only be enough when paired with maximum points hauls at the Amex. With just three wins and 15

points won at home all season, the Albion have the Championship’s third-worst home record and just four teams have scored less goals on their own patch. If the club is to address their worrying home record they will need to show substantially more attacking intent than against Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday. Albion managed just three shots on target across 180 minutes of both games. It has been confirmed that the Middlesbrough attacking midfielder Emmanuel Ledesma will be joining the Albion on loan to provide competition in wide areas while returning Kazenga Lua Lua and Dale Stephens should continue to provide improved creativity and attacking options. Birmingham rely heavily on Clayton Donaldson to provide a goal threat, although the striker has not found the net since a hattrick against Wigan Athletic back

‘‘

We always knew it would be tough. It’s a very difficult pitch to play how you’d like to play but that’s two clean sheets on the road and I think that, as the away team, you’ve got to be pleased

on January 10th. Midfielder David Cotterill is another key player with seven goals and seven assists to his name this campaign, plus a delightful delivery from set pieces, and the highly-rated 18-year-old Demarai Gray, with his pace, could trouble the Albion in wide areas. Albion fans will be intrigued to see whether Danny Holla returns to the squad but Hughton’s main decision will be whether to go with Leon Best or Chris O’Grady in the central striking role as he continues to search for the right combination in attacking areas.

with that. "I thought that particularly when the game opened up we counter-attacked very well, but it was always going to be difficult to get that final pass in when we needed to.”

Following the successful Football versus Homophobia (FvH) conference in Manchester last week – which featured former German international Thomas Hitzlsperger, who came out shortly after he retired from professional football – Louise

Englefield of Pride Sports, the organisation that runs FvH, will be back in the Radio Reverb studios with Ady and Al, as part of Football versus Homophobia month. The club is backing the initiative and Pride Sports will soon commence a series of workshops for the club’s academy boys and girls at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

It has been relatively easy in recent seasons to assess the success of managers at the Albion; the distinct lines drawn after a particular campaign, or a style that you can associate with the man in charge. This season will, of course, be very different with the departure of Sami Hyypia and we can only take Chris Hughton on his current run of just nine games in all competitions. The last two games have resulted in 0-0 draws but as one texter to the Final Whistle pointed out, they could be very valuable come May. They haven’t been entertaining and neither Cardiff City, or Sheffield Wednesday, can be classed as top sides. But, the grit required to eke out a point

could be vital. Under Gus Poyet, the Seagulls had a trait that was very evident. They rarely gave away leads but similarly struggled to gain points after going behind. His team’s ‘possession’ game made this no real surprise. My former colleague at BBC Sussex, and ex Albion striker, Johnny Byrne, used to get frustrated by the way the game was being played under Gus and at times fans echoed his view saying they found it dull and boring. The Uruguayan could justify it, however, by the results and a top-six finish. It is somewhat early to remark on this season but there are a few indicators of where it may have been going wrong: the Albion have gained seven points from losing positions, and

Follow all the action, home or away, on BBC Sussex Sport or Twitter @BBCSussexSport @johnnycburger @BHIndyAlbion lost 16 (13 under Hyypia) from winning positions. It appears Chris Hughton quickly identified the need for more experience in midfield and Beram Kayal has showed promising early signs. Holding onto leads and clawing back a point here and there will be key across the next 15 games. A few more 0-0s may help, but they will certainly have to win a fair few in between if they are to hold on to their Championship status. Two victories against Birmingham and Leeds would do very nicely. Back-to-back league wins have been achieved twice this season, once under each manager. Time to win ugly.

Football should be a beautiful game for everyone to enjoy Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion Football is England’s national game. As such, it has a responsibility to its participants, and spectators, to provide a safe, non-prejudiced environment for everyone to enjoy a sport that brings joy to billions across the world. Racism has been on the agenda since the Three Degrees’ days of Ron Atkinson’s West Bromwich Albion side of the late 1970s when Laurie Cunningham, Brendan Batson and Cyrille Regis dazzled the country with their swashbuckling style of play. All three players were black, a rarity in the First Division (now the Premier league) at the time. It’s hard to picture it, but bananas were regularly jettisoned from the terraces, along with accompanying monkey chants. Thankfully, this has been consigned to the history books in

this country although it remains a serious problem elsewhere, most notably in Spain and Italy. West Brom’s selection of three black players in their starting XI was largely representative of the club’s community, where 30% of the population are from an ethnic background. Brighton and Hove is much less diverse, ethnically, but does have the largest LGBT community, percentage-wise, of any city in Europe, and pretty much the world. If any football club should be at the forefront of tackling homophobia in football it’s Brighton & Hove Albion. The club is taking an active role in Football versus Homophobia month, with a range of events supporting the initiative. Last Sunday the Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society (BLAGSS) played a match against the Sussex County FA on Albion in the Community’s pitch at the academy in Lancing. The entertaining 0-0 draw had a

celebratory feel as BLAGGS are now officially affiliated to the FA and are looking to organise friendlies with other clubs. The late Sarah Watts, of the Albion supporters’ club, led from the front with her sterling efforts to bring homophobia to the attention of the FA, and other clubs. Her actions were born of frustration from years of abuse at away games following her club. Albion fans have regularly heard entire stands singing ‘we can see you holding hands’, ‘does your boyfriend know you’re here’ – and much cruder ditties not fit for printing in a family newspaper – over the decades. It was never original, or funny. Look out for more information in the matchday programme, the big screens before the game and half-time, and support the initiative by purchasing a Football versus Homophobia T-Shirt (all proceeds to FvH) from the Seagulls Store
