PUBS AND CLUBS FACE A LATE-NIGHT LEVY Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

More than 400 licensed premises face paying a late-night levy in the centre of Brighton. The levy could raise more than £400,000 a year which would be used to fund safety measures and initiatives to reduce crime. Any plan is unlikely to be debated formally until September at the earliest although a spokesman for the pub trade vowed to fight what he described as a “truly woeful idea”. Chief Inspector Katy Woolford visited Newcastle – the first place in the country to being in a latenight levy – to see how it worked.

She told Brighton and Hove City Council’s Licensing Committee: “The night-time economy in Brighton is renowned as being vibrant and full of an abundance of venues to visit. “On any weekend the clubs can hold in excess of 30,000 people and it’s estimated that eight million people visit the city every year. The footprint of the nighttime economy has expanded considerably since the licensing law changed and now runs till 6am to 7am. “While celebrating the success of the city’s night-time economy, there is a negative side which puts a strain on many of the emergency services in relation >> Continued on page 3

Deaths prompt Minister visits Chamber work to save youths from radical threat The deaths in Syria of three teenagers from Brighton lie behind efforts to keep young people from being radicalised. Community leaders have been briefed over the past fortnight on the measures taking shape. Abdullah Deghayes, 18, and his brother Jaffar, 17, from Saltdean, both died in Syria last year – as did Ibrahim Kamara, 19, also from Brighton. Senior officials from Brighton and Hove City Council and Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, from Sussex Police, tried to learn lessons by listening to the families affected. They asked a leading expert, Fiyaz Mughal, director of Faith Matters, to lead the conversation and distil the lessons. It led to

the creation of a programme known as One Voice. He shared his findings with the council’s Community Safety Forum last week and with faith and community leaders earlier this week. Mr Mughal highlighted the way that “grievances, a lack of belonging, a sense of feeling internally fractured within communities… can lead to vulnerabilities”. He spoke about trying to build connection points and confidence, adding: “What we found was that BME (black and minority ethnic) communities found the representation of their communities was negative in the local press. “Another area that they also

Culture Minister Ed Vaizey visited Brighton and Hove to learn more about the success of the digital sector in Brighton and Hove. He visited the Chamber of Commerce, Brighton Media Centre and the Sussex Innovation Centre. Mr Vaizey, left, is pictured with Sarah Springford and Abby Moreton, from the Chamber, Duncan French, of cloud services firm Xoomtalk, and Graham Cox, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Hove. Chamber's Living Wage success, see pages 23-27

mentioned was concern around racism and hate crimes – it came across quite strongly from some participants that racism was still affecting some of their lives. Racism has created a sense of dislocation where people felt like outsiders even within the city.” He said that feeling could

be manipulated by those with an ideology. The One Voice programme aims to help young people become more resilient to those with an extremist ideology. It is also intended to give young Muslims the means to tackle Islamophobia in a positive way.

Mr Mughal mentioned the challenges faced by those concerned with good community relations. And he said: “Participants who are parents have raised their fears and concerns regarding online radicalisation and where young people may have inherent vulnerabilities.”

Pubs and clubs vow to fight late-night levy > Continued from page 1 to alcohol-related harm and increased vulnerability. To keep people safe, there are many provisions and services which minimise these risks, all of which require funding. In this era of fiscal restraint, funding these services and provision is becoming increasingly challenging. “The introduction of a late-night levy would ensure that licensed premises who wish to stay open beyond a specified time pay a contribution to keep the city safe for those who come to enjoy it.” A spokesman for the Brighton and Hove Licensees Association, Nick Griffin, who is also the managing director of the Pleisure

pub company, said: “It’s a truly woeful idea. It will destroy Brighton and the good things about it. It will destroy businesses and people’s livelihoods. “This is a really emotive issue among publicans. It will be fought by the trade. We pay huge business rates already and as publicans we pay for the police twice because we pay business rates and council tax on the same building. “Why should publicans pay more because the government isn’t giving enough money to the police! They’ll struggle. We are risking the goose that lays the golden egg for Brighton.” He said that the evidence showed that crime and disorder was falling and that a late-night

On This Day

levy would mean more pubs closed earlier to try to avoid having to pay it. As a result more people would go to fewer late-night venues in a greater concentration of numbers, making trouble more likely – not less so. Chief Inspector Woolford, who runs the Operations Team in Brighton, said that small venues could pay £5.75 a week – or £300 a year. Bigger premises such as the Pryzm night club in West Street were likely to pay £84.61 – or £4,400 a year. With a cut-off time of 1am, the measure could raise more than £400,000 a year from up to 420 premises. Sussex Police would receive 70 per cent and the council would get the rest.

1978 | Monday, March 13 Vaultage 78, a compilation album of Brighton’s punk bands, was released. Only a thousand copies of the vinyl LP were pressed that introduced one of the town’s newest bands to the unsuspecting Sussex public – Peter and the Test Tube Babies. The four-piece punk outfit were formed in a Peacehaven garage in the same year and were soon touring the world with their unashamedly non-serious songs in ‘Punk Pathetique’ – a subgenre of British punk rock (circa 1980-1982) involving humour and working-class cultural themes.

Relax in style in the Waterhouse Bar & Terrace, experience our hospitality and enjoy our ‘Perfect Pairings’. I’ve been reflecting on the challenges of leading change inside and outside the council recently. A few days ago I spoke at a panel event hosted by the University of Brighton to reflect on 40 years of the Equal Pay Act. There was no doubt among participants that there was still much work to do, and some interesting reflections that “fair pay” may be a preferred term in today’s diverse world. I was asked to reflect on our experience in 2013 of delivering a system of pay and allowances for the council that was fair and compliant with equal pay law. No easy task even when most of those affected increased their take-home pay and the minority who saw a detriment were compensated for three times their annual loss. In a very different example,

resistance to change has also arisen: I’ve recently had to speak about plans now under way to remove half of the cash parking machines on our streets. They are 15 years old and would cost £3,000 each to replace at a time when the use of cash is in decline yet the costs of collecting it are rising. We haven’t taken up the radical Westminster City Council model where, eight years ago, they removed all the machines in favour of phone payment. Instead our approach has been to first introduce optional payment by phone two years ago followed by a reduction in parking machines this year. Cash payment at machines and 150 PayPoint shops remains, as do card payment machines. Leaders can’t simply always follow public opinion. That risks a permanent status quo. Leading opinion, showing positive alternatives, must be a part of public leadership in my view, even if the journey isn’t always the most comfortable.

Waste House architect urges tax reform VAT rules undermine sustainable development by rewarding developers who demolish buildings and penalising those who refurbish, a Brighton architect and academic said. Duncan Baker-Brown, who designed Brighton University’s Waste House, Britain’s first house made from thrown-away materials, urged politicians to change tax laws. He wants the system to encourage green retrofit projects. Mr Baker-Brown, a senior lecturer at the university, said a VAT “level playing field” would encourage the kind of recycling and reuse of materials that were central to the Waste House.

Doctor asks for ideas on NHS change Brighton GP Sarah Andersen brought together fellow medics, academics and an eclectic mix of others on NHS Change Day on Wednesday. Dr Andersen, who runs Futurehealth Brighton, invited her guests to think about how they could do things differently. Among those who shared their ideas at the Extraordinary Projects Party , at the Emporium, in London Road, were Andy Bradley, of Frameworks 4 Change, and Ray Richards, of Do Something Different. Matthew Kershaw, chief executive of Brighton’s main hospital trust, BSUH, went to the Princess Royal, in Haywards Heath, and spent two hours on a ward meeting staff and patients. He also went to reception and stood by a sign saying: “I’m the chief executive and I’m here to listen.” The organisers said: “NHS Change Day is our opportunity to come together and harness our collective energy, creativity and ideas to make a change. Together each of our small actions will make a big difference.”

Trying to be a strong voice for all Simon Kirby @SimonKirbyMP

They say a week is a long time in politics. In that case, a month is a lifetime. In my last column - in January - I spoke about the campaigns I had been involved with for the £420 million funding for the Royal Sussex County hospital – and the Saltdean Lido. Since then I have continued to campaign hard and am pleased that the government has set aside a further £60 million for the hospital redevelopment. This will enable the Royal Sussex to provide the very best facilities that patients and staff deserve. This is great news for our city. There has also been further good news for the Lido campaign, with a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £4.7 million, taking the total raised to over £7 million. This is a fantastic achievement and huge credit must go to the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (CIC) for all their hard work in getting to this point. I will continue to support the CIC

going forward and look forward to seeing the Lido reopen as soon as possible for people to enjoy. Animal welfare is another area I have taken a close interest in. I was one of the first to call for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses. I have worked hard to tackle the problem of puppy farms and I continue to support the hunting ban. In fact, in February I was one of the MPs that took part in a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Hunting Act becoming law. In this article, I wanted to mention the exciting project that is coming forward in the Manor Park area of East Brighton. Here local people are working together to improve what is presently a patch of tarmac to turn it into a well-lit centre for local people to participate in sports. I recently met with one of the trustees of the Manor Road Centre to learn more about the campaign, and I have contacted a number of local organisations as well as the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to ascertain what assistance may be available to the group. I have been questioning Brighton

The New Pension Fund Freedoms and how this may benefit and affect you Skerritts are holding two seminars at the Amex Stadium in Brighton on Thursday, March 19 covering pensions and the changes being brought in from April of this year. The seminar is being presented by Steve Bee, a leading industry figure who is also very entertaining (yes, even on the subject of pensions!). The Seminar will cover: • Should I access my pension fund and what are the advantages/disadvantages or doing so? • How to ensure that my pension fund is passed to my beneficiaries tax-free on my death? • Can my pension provider give me the new freedoms in my existing plan? • How can I increase my investment returns or reduce my investment risk? • Should I pay more money into my pension fund? Pensions are the hot topic at the moment, so Skerritts are holding the seminars in response to demand from clients and have now opened them up to a wider audience. The seminars are free to attend and no obligation: • Seminar 1 – 8.30am start – breakfast provided (bacon rolls, pastries, coffee, juice) • Seminar 2 – 12.30pm start – buffet lunch/drinks provided

and Hove City Council on its recycling and rubbish record. You may have seen statistics showing that the council has a poor and worsening record on recycling. In today’s world it is vital that we recycle and reuse where we can. You would think that as Brighton and Hove has a Green council the recycling rates would be going up but that isn’t the case. Other councils do much better on recycling. It is important locally that changes are made. Media attention inevitably is now turning to the general election.

We also have local elections in our city. When I looked back over the past five years, I worked out that I have taken up casework for approximately 14,000 people, responded to tens of thousands of emails, letters and phone calls and held over 200 constituency advice surgeries. But right up until Parliament is dissolved at the end of the month, I am just concentrating on being a strong voice for all local people. Simon Kirby is the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown

Two FREE seminars at the Amex Stadium in Brighton on Thursday, March 19 The Seminars will last for one hour and attendees will then have the option of an Amex Stadium tour if they wish. The Seminars are aimed at: • People who have a pension fund and are interested in their options from April; • People who have a pension fund and want to ensure it is invested in the right areas; • People who have a pension and want to ensure that it will receive tax free death benefits; • People who are considering investing in or investing further into a pension.

Who are Skerritts? Skerritts is a Hove-based firm of Chartered Financial Planners and Wealth Managers. They are ranked in the top 100 firms in the Country (Citywire) and have been awarded the Citywire NMA Award for the fifth consecutive year. They offer professional and impartial advice on all types of pension. To book your invitation, please email sophie@skerritts.co.uk or contact Sophie on 01273 204999.

Marina campaigners SOUTHCOAST given an appeal date WINDOWS

Campaigners hoping to stop tower blocks being built at Brighton Marina have been given a date for their case in the Court of Appeal. The Brighton Marina Action Group shared the news this week as they tried to prevent what were described as minor changes to the planning permission for the £250 million scheme. Their objections were dismissed by Brighton and Hove City Council’s Planning Committee. Brunswick Developments, the applicant, has already started work on the scheme to build 850 flats in 11 blocks up to 40 storeys high. Andrew Goodall and Peter Green, from Brunswick, told the last Planning Committee meeting at Hove Town Hall, that 100 staff were working on site. The number would rise to 300 by the end of the project. And 40 per cent of the jobs would go to local people – twice the level required as a planning condition. They said that they were also working with City College on providing more apprenticeships. And they added: “We acquired the Marina just under 20 years ago and we’re passionate about it. The scheme was approved nearly 10 years ago. These are minor amendments to improve the scheme.” Robert Powell and John Watts,

Councillor Mary Mears raised concerns

from the Brighton Marina Action Group, disagreed and expressed concerns about the safety and practicality of the proposals. They are still challenging the legality of the overall planning permission. Professor Watts was the original site architect at the Marina. Their claim was thrown out in the High Court last year but they have been given permission to take the case to the Court of Appeal. A hearing will take place on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 June. Councillor Mary Mears also raised concerns about the number of changes being made to the project and called for strict conditions to be set and enforced. Two schools have been given planning permission to create extra space as they prepare to

take extra classes to cope with a population bulge. The council’s Planning Committee agreed applications for St Andrew’s CofE Primary School and Saltdean Primary School. Both applications gave rise to concerns about parking. In Saltdean a neighbour said that surrounding streets were already blighted by incidents of road rage and parking rage. The enlargement plans allow for only two extra parking spaces. But the number of pupils is planned to rise from 420 to 630 and the number of staff will also increase. Although councillors criticised the lack of extra parking, the only change that they asked for was to the red cladding on the two-storey Saltdean building. They amended the application so that the Planning Committee could in future sign off a more appropriate colour. At St Andrew’s the extension will mean a loss of roughly half the parking space in the Haddington Street car park. Almost 200 extra pupils will be able to go to the school when the two-storey extension is completed. Dozens of neighbours objected to the St Andrew's plans. Ward councillor Andrew Wealls - a governor - wrote in support of the application by the successful, popular and outstanding school.

The Manservant

A B C D E F G

by Michael Harwood Good grief! Who knew what went on behind the doors of the rich? You know, the sort of rich that has manservants … the sort of rich who don’t even pull the plug on their own bathwater, but leave it for someone else to do? I was agog at the details in this book and - fascinating as they are - the main character, Anthony, is undoubtedly the star of the show. We meet him when he is working as a concierge in a grand London hotel. After a hair-raising incident, he has to leave the hotel in rather a hurry and lands on his feet (so it would seem) as

AND HOME IMPROVEMENTS

private manservant to Lord Shanderson, at Beadale Castle in Sussex. Of course, as a Soho-loving gay guy who can’t live without his coffee machine, his walks up and down Old Compton Street, and his martinis, Anthony rather suspects that his lifestyle will be severely restricted in the depths of the country. Ha! How wrong can you be? This is a riveting book, not just for the upstairs, downstairs revelations - but for the sheer exuberance of it. It also has that rare thing attached to it, which is the undoubted ring of truth to it. Harwood has worked in

some terribly grand places indeed and knows all there is to know about life below stairs. He’s a private chef and cookery writer. He has cooked for the Queen as well as quite a lot of other queens. And I can’t wait to talk to him at The Bookish Supper Society! Michael Harwood will be appearing at Bookish Supper Society on Wednesday, March 25. Tickets from Tabl.com

2011 election results Poll watch St Peter’s North Laine is the birthplace of the Green Party’s influence in Brighton and Hove. Councillor Pete West was the party’s first councilor in the former St Peter’s ward from 1996. Even though Ian Davey is standing down, it is hard to see the ward not returning three Green councillors in May. Correction In last week's ward profile of Queen's Park, we referred to how, rather distastefully, the Labour Party machine has tried to make capital out of comments made 30 years ago by Richard Stanton, a Green candidate, about the Grand Hotel bombing. In our report, we said Mel Davis, chair of Labour’s City Party, did not point out that Mr Stanton was a Labour Party member at the time of his comments. We have been asked to make clear that, in a letter to the Green Party dated December 3 2014, Ms Davis did, in fact, recognise Mr Stanton had been a Labour councillor at the time of his comments. Her letter, which was somehow leaked to The Argus newspaper within 24 hours, stated: "Mr Stanton represented our party for ten years in Queen’s Park ward. How diligent he was as a councillor is hard for me to comment as I was not directly involved at the time." We would like to apologise to Ms Davis and the Labour Party for this mistake.

James Watts, property developer, has secured planning permission to demolish the former Hi Fi Lounge nightclub in Providence Place and build a four-storey building. The new building would have 10 short-term let rooms, function rooms in the basement and on the third floor, and a kitchen on the fourth floor.

A Week in the City Housing

Graffiti house A landlord had the front of his house spray-painted in response to a letter from the council. Letters advising residents of Viaduct Road to tidy up their houses were sent out by the council’s planning enforcement team as part of a drive by the London Road Area Local Action Team. The landlord commissioned Aroe MSK, a local graffiti artist, to paint a London to Brighton themed mural on the front of his home.

A leading figure of the campaign to stop cuts to Brighton and Hove’s children’s centres will stand in the upcoming local elections. Leila Erin-Jenkins will stand in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, her home ward, for the Left Unity party. If elected she says she will carry on the fight against cuts to local services and has pledged to carry on her campaign against any future cuts to children’s centres.

A historical Brighton yard is under threat from a developer that wants to build an office block on it. Diplocks Yard on North Road is currently home to a market. In the last ten years it has had nine failed attempts to build on it. Sussex Property Investments, the current owners, are making a tenth bid. The previous application was turned down because its roof was too bulky and out of character with the surrounding area.

Residents in the Fiveways area could soon benefit from a new parking scheme. If councillors agree, residents will be given the option of a five or seven day scheme, with enforcement from 9am to 8pm. The consultation would include a leaflet delivered to all local homes, businesses and services along with a staffed exhibition. The proposals have been drawn up following the Citywide Parking Survey carried out last year.

Proposals to convert a derelict hotel on Hove seafront have been submitted by property developers. The submitted plans aim at turning the hotel into five houses and an apartment block. Developers have seen similar plans for the old Sackville Hotel on Hove seafront rejected by councillors in the past. The hotel was demolished after a collapse happened during a refurbishment in 2006. The application is under consideration by the council.

Following the implementation of the plantpot chicanes aimed at reducing speed limits on Viaduct Road, more planters will be placed in Hove. Planters will be placed on Waterloo Road; unlike the ones on Viaduct Road they will not act as chicanes, but instead be placed in line with parked cars. Four of the five planters will be placed on the street in line with parked cars, and a fifth on a pavement build-out.

Hertford Infant School has become the first school in Brighton and Hove to have an outdoor library. The project was inspired by Rachel Ramaker, a teacher who saw outdoor libraries in New York during a trip to the US. The mini library is built on wooden stilts and has books inside for children to exchange and borrow. Caroline Lucas, Brighton Pavilion MP carried out the official opening ceremony as part of its Read Aloud Week.

A roads and landscaping scheme that could bring £40m worth of benefits to Brighton and Hove could progress to the construction drawings stage soon. Councillors are being asked to allow staff to start technical designs for road layouts and landscaping for the Valley Gardens scheme. It aims at improving walking, cycling and public transport between St Peter’s Church and the Royal Pavilion, with no increase in car journey times.

RadioReverb, an independent radio station, undertook a nonstop marathon programme. Live broadcasting continued for 52 hours with no break to celebrate eight years on the air. The station raised more than £3,000 comfortably beating their target. This is an increase on the £2000 raised last year and reflects the backing of residents, listeners and local businesses that want to keep RadioReverb ad-free and independent. This year’s Reverbathon saw rap battles between DJs, live music from local bands and a day of female led shows on International Women’s Day. Melita Dennett, Chair of RadioReverb, said: “These are challenging times for community radio, but RadioReverb continues to thrive because we are all about Brighton and Hove”.

Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard celebrates 40 years of listening The Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard, a crisis helpline for the LGBT community, is celebrating its 40-year anniversary. The switchboard started as the Lavender Line, with 10 people working 2 evenings a week above the Open café in Victoria Road. The team advised LGBT people in crisis situations on where they could find accommodation, how they could tackle their issues and even where the best LGBT friendly clubs were. Most importantly they provided a neutral and understanding pair of ears willing to listen to the problems of callers. It now operates every night of the week from 5pm with 30 trained volunteers on call at any one time and offers a range of services in addition to the phone helpline. Callers can arrange face-toface counseling sessions with qualified counsellors, all of whom identify as LGBT. They can arrange up to 12 sessions that are charged based on income. This is the only LGBT specific affordable counselling service in the local area. The Older LGBT Project, which started in 2014, aims at reaching out to the LGBT community aged over 50 who have become isolated as a result of mobility issues, mental health issues or bereavement. The switchboard arranges visits and days out for the older LGBT community.

Brighton and Hove's mayor attended the Older LGBT Project launch in 2014

The Health and Inclusion Project consults LGBT people on their needs and experiences so that public services can be improved. The switchboard feeds back research to the NHS and the council who also help fund the project. Volunteers are trained over six sessions and are taught how to effectively help with a range of issues. Jenny Bennett, volunteer for 30 years, said: “The volunteers do a great job and take it very seriously, they commit themselves, not just myself but the others as well. The training is excellent.” The LGBT Switchboard's services are funded by grants from the council and the NHS. Local council budget cuts have pushed the switchboard to seek out new ways of raising money in order to safeguard vital services. The first of these is a charity

firewalk challenge celebrating the 40-year anniversary, which will take place on Tuesday, April 30, at St Georges Church, St George's Road, Kemp Town. The switchboard is seeking 100 participants to raise £100 each, to face their primal fears and walk across hot coals following a one-hour training session. Silver Sounds Drummers will be helping to create the atmosphere and lead the walkers out to the fire. The 40:400 Club, which aims at recruiting 40 businesses to raise £400 each for the switchboard over the year through fundraising events, is also launching soon. Lush, the cosmetic retailer is the first company to get involved and will be present at the firewalk challenge helping to relax entrants. The miracle of the Archbishop of Canterbury and St Peter’s Church Jean Calder @jeancalder101

Last Sunday I queued for 30 minutes to hear Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, preach at Brighton’s St Peter’s Church. Cold as I was, I couldn’t stop smiling. This is a church that just a few

years ago was earmarked for closure. It was expensive to run, needed extensive repairs and was situated on a prime site at the juncture of the London and Lewes Roads. Despite the protests of its small but loyal congregation, the Diocese proposed its redundancy and its clergy and the then bishop of Chichester agreed. The Diocese reckoned without two things, the

stubbornness of the congregation and local people’s deep affection for the church. A campaign was set up and over two years the Friends of St Peter’s wrote letters of protest, gained cross-party support from Brighton and Hove City Council and gathered a 7,000 signature petition. In May 2008 a small group of campaigners travelled to London to appear before the Church Commissioners. It was adversarial and frighteningly formal, but the Commissioners were kind. The Bishop, the Archdeacon and other members of the church hierarchy still argued forcefully for redundancy, but four of us spoke against. Our position had been strengthened by the fact that Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) Church in London had learned of the dire situation St Peter's and told us it had offered help. We asked the Commissioners to explore this option and, to our delight, they agreed. We were confident that, given the chance, HTB would succeed. And so they did. The church authorities still closed the church and removed many things the ‘old’ congregation held dear. Nonetheless, HTB was on its way and, during the few months the church was closed, a small group of us met for Saturday matins, first in Bardsley’s fish and chip shop in Baker street and then at St Bartholomew's Church. In October 2009, Archie Coates, a popular clergyman from HTB

Share the credit for success, but be prepared to take the blame” (who is married to a Brightonian), was inducted as the new vicar. The church was packed at that event and has remained that way pretty well ever since. There were hundreds of people at Sunday’s service. Archie Coates interviewed Justin Welby, whose self-deprecating style suited the mood of the congregation. Though he didn’t

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

mention it was International Women’s Day (I wish he had) he made a point of saying that the “average Anglican” is an African woman in her thirties, living in poverty, who has lived with conflict and violence and has a 50% chance of being in an area in which Christians are persecuted. Asked about leadership, he said that nothing could be achieved without God and without humility (or as he said “keep washing feet”). He added that good leaders need the confidence to surround themselves with people who are cleverer, brighter and more spiritual than they are. He joked “share the credit for their success” but “be prepared to take the blame”. As we approach a secular general election this seems useful advice. He said that at times he feels like “an imposter”, as if the real Archbishop of Canterbury will suddenly appear one day and tell him he’s taking over. He added that he didn’t quite know how he’d got there. I was similarly amazed not, of course, at how Justin Welby had come to be Archbishop - but at how the Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual heir of St Augustine, had ended up in our St Peter’s Church, doomed for so many years to closure. But then, in a way it was fitting. As Justin Welby said, a Bishop once told him before he was ordained “there’s no future for you in the Church of England”. During the St Peter’s campaign, nobody ever told us what the developers intended to do with the church if it closed, but it was pretty clear a great deal of money would have been involved. I smiled as I left the church, remembering that the gospelreading for the service had been John 2:13-25..... the one in which Jesus drives the money lenders out of the temple.

Interim college chief offers reassurance Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

The interim principal of City College said that she would get its finances back on track as quickly as possible. And students and their studies would remain the college’s top priority. Monica Box took charge just over a week ago. She said steps had already been taken to put in place a financial recovery plan. She is an experienced principal and financial turnaround specialist who said that would get a grip of the spending controls needed to bring the college back within budget. “It’s a very promising task,” she said, “because the college has real opportunities to grow even in this difficult funding climate.” The number and range of courses – and the staff needed as a result – would be reviewed, with the unions kept informed, she said. But her aim would be to achieve “efficiencies” before deciding whether more jobs had to go. He acknowledged that a small

number of students out of the thousands at City College were not entered for an exam last year and said: “Clearly what happened with the 37 students in terms of examinations this year was not just regrettable but completely counter to anything this college would ever want to see again but learners, their programmes and their assessments are our priorities and they can be confident that that’s how the college will proceed.” But with a financial recovery plan in place and a tighter grip on spending controls, she said, the college would work hard to pay suppliers on time and to file its outstanding accounts for the past financial year, having missed a December deadline. “The prospect for a new senior team coming in, say, six months’ time is a good prospect. “We’ve got good staff here. We’ve got some really good staff and clearly engaged students. “The first thing that struck me when I arrived at the college was

‘The Good Divorce’

its friendly, vibrant atmosphere and the positive attitude of staff and students. “Brighton is such a young, forward-looking city that’s rich in potential so to be the main further

Monica Box - turnaround specialist

education provider in a location like that makes the college incredibly well-placed to go from strength to strength.

“I think the ‘engine room of the local economy’ description really hits the nail on the head. “Brighton and Hove has such a young demographic, local businesses will be relying on the college to provide them with welltrained employees so I very much see the college being at the heart of future growth.” The rebuilding of the Pelham Street campus had not been cancelled but would not go ahead in the immediate future while the finances were stabilised. But work on the £9 million new construction centre at the City College East campus, in Wilson Avenue, would start soon. But the college would continue to sponsor City Academy, formerly Whitehawk Primary School. She added: “Most of my work is with colleges that have recovery plans or are about to have one. Here, there is a financial recovery plan.

“There have been issues otherwise the college wouldn’t have a financial recovery plan and they were around financial controls. “The key issues were less around income than how the income was used – the control of that income if you like. It’s not about it being spent wrongly but about how it was controlled. “The sector is a turbulent sector in terms of funding at the moment and there are reductions for all colleges in their 19-plus incomes.” She said that the college had annual income of about £20 million – and it expected that figure to be cut. She added: “At this stage we’re not looking at a savings figure we’re looking at efficiencies and meeting our plans. “We will be looking at staffing but we would have to look at that anyway. We have to look at the curriculum first and we will be sharing that with the unions.”

I can help you bypass the truly awful adversarial process of the courts at the time of the breakup JO O’SULLIVAN

This weekend as I was walking through Brighton I spotted a huge sign in the window of a card shop saying, “DON’T FORGET MOTHERS DAY CAUSE SHE CERTAINLY WON’T”. It was a rather unsubtle but effective message and it made me smile because there would be few people who would argue that Mother’s Day doesn’t matter. Yes, Mother’s Day can indeed feel like a bit of a duty but I think that’s ok. Sometimes in our busy lives, families need these official ways of expressing the love and appreciation they have for mothers. However, as a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator working with separating couples I also know that this day will stir up mixed emotions especially when you are in the midst of dealing with a difficult separation or divorce. Over the years I have heard many a female client say she felt that an ex partner purposely didn’t help the children organise a card or present for Mother’s Day as a way of deliberately hurting them. And it does hurt ….really hurt sometimes. Particularly when children are too young to organise a surprise present or card with adult help. But also it hurts children as they feel they have to choose sides. When I established my own practice O’Sullivan Family Law in 2011

I was determined to help separating couples avoid court and do things differently. As a Collaborative lawyer I am specially trained to give advice openly in a series of 4 way meetings so no nasty letters, no point scoring, just a willingness get to a fair solution. So my driving principle is always to help couples avoid unnecessary hurt and to try and treat each other with respect. Most of my female clients are indeed mums and my approach helps these women and the ex partners communicate first and foremost as parents and deal with both the expected and unexpected issues of parenting after parting. Then using mediation I ‘guide’ couples through their break up remaining impartial and explaining the legal process to both parties at the same time. This enables couples to communicate in a safe space and to come up with their own options for settlement. In the UK it is usually women rather than men who file for divorce; for most mums this will

have been after much soul searching as to how to end things without causing unnecessary pain and get through the process as committed and loving parents. Planning for Mother’s Day after divorce can cause stress and tension between parents and even with other family members, and yet in my view it is the perfect day to show children that even if parents are not together, everyone acknowledges and respects her role in the family.

‘Idle pebbles’ on the great shore of life Graham Chainey

I am walking on the beach, crunching underfoot the geological detritus of aeons of terrestrial existence. They roll about in their infinite numbers, tumbling promiscuously at the water’s edge, rattling and chattering, trapping among them the ephemeral feathers, shells, plastics, woods and stinking algae of the day. That estimable authority, Mrs Mary Merrifield, in her Natural History of Brighton (1860), opines that “there are, perhaps, to an unreflective wanderer by the seashore, few prospects which appear so utterly barren as the beach, with its rolled masses of pebbles – fragments, rounded by attrition of almost every kind of rock known to geologists; and which, had they but tongues to tell whence they came, would astonish us by the distance which, borne on by the resistless force of the waves, they have travelled.” Some of them, she goes

on, “under a rough and unprepossessing exterior, disclose, when cut and polished, an inner surface of much beauty. Moss-agates, fossil sponges and zoophytes, chalcedony, jasper, sometimes reward the labour of those who can discern the objects of their search under their rough exterior.” (One of the adverts at the back of her volume is for Oliver Gates, Lapidary and Jeweller, in Pool Valley and one of the arches on the Chain Pier, with his “finest collection in Brighton” of pebbles, agates and geological specimens: “Pebbles of every description cut and polished”.) Among beach pebbles may be found granite and schist, flint and feldspar, sandstone and slate, along with such manmade impostors as brick, concrete, bitumen and glass. Geologically, so I read, they may be categorised as igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary, or they can be sorted into chemical groupings (silicates, carbonates, nitrates and so on). They vary enormously in size, from cricket balls down to shingle, gravel and grit you can scoop up by the handful.

Shakespeare, in King Lear, speaks euphoniously of “the murmuring surge, that on the unnumbered idle pebbles chafes”. That “unnumbered” – or my glib “infinite numbers” – is of course a challenge to any hyper-numerate literalist bore. Step forward David Coats, an Australian boffin, who a few years ago spent a lunchtime investigating. After some calculations on the back of sandwich wrappers, he estimated there were on average 1,280 pebbles per cubic metre, and therefore some 614,600,000 pebbles on Brighton beach (measuring it six miles from the Marina to Shoreham harbour) – give or take the odd million. (His website - I suppose this was inevitable - carries an ad for “quality Chinese polished pebbles”.) I doubt whether such statistics would have impressed Richard Jefferies who, as he lay on Brighton beach in 1884, put the idle stones to idle uses. “Wonder how long it would take me to pitch a pebble so as to lodge on the top of that large brown pebble there? I try, once now and then.”

MAXMATT

Meanwhile, local artist, photoblogger, and lithophile Chris Stevens wanders the beach each day, in all weathers, to find and photograph an interesting pebble. The best, curiously, are found “close to the path next to the beach, or around cafés”. They are harder to find, he claims, “after it has been raining, or when there has been a high tide.” (His blog is at umbrellage.com). Pebbles are a bit like human beings, in fact. Innumerable

and apparently “idle” in their restlessness; identical seeming when viewed en masse, yet each full of individuality and quirkiness; each, when examined more closely, with its unique secret history. A lot of us, like the pebbles, are not quite what at first sight we seem to be. Yes, we are all of us pebbles on the great shore of life. Easter eggs: A regrettable treat Michelle Westlake BCs Hons Dip AVN CVN RVN For New Priory Vets Brighton staff working the Easter weekend, it is usually not a case of if, but how many chocolate poisonings we will treat. Last year brought us five cases over the holiday weekend. Chocolate contains Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. The darker the chocolate, the more Theobromine it will contain. Honestly, it is amazing the amount of stuff some dogs will eat. Don’t be deceived that your furry friend will be put off by a small matter of a bit of wrapping - if your dog manages to find your yummy Easter eggs, many will gobble the lot wrappers and all! Toxicity can cause agitation, excitability, increased heart rate, heart disturbances, tremors and convulsions. If you suspect your dog may have eaten chocolate, call your vet as soon as possible. Have to hand information such as the

amount and type of chocolate ingested, as well as the weight of your dog, which will enable veterinary staff to work out if a toxic dose has been eaten. Another yummy treat for Easter are hot cross buns. These contain raisins, which along with grapes and sultanas are highly toxic to dogs. Any amount of raisins can potentially cause kidney failure in susceptible dogs. So, if you suspect your dog has eaten your Easter treats, contact your vet as soon as possible.

Living Wage reaches new milestone The number of employers to have signed up for the Living Wage has topped 200, the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce announced yesterday. The Martlets became the 200th to sign up, with more firms swiftly following suit. The Martlets, a local independent charity, provides end of life care to adults living in Brighton and Hove. The charity, which runs a hospice in Hove, has cared for more than 25,000 local people since 1997. Robert Griffiths, the charity’s director of fundraising and communications, said: “The Martlets believes that all its employees should be paid a sustainable hourly rate that takes into account the costs of living and working in a particular location. “The hospice values all its staff and believes too that there are benefits to the charity in committing itself to the payment of the Living Wage in terms of recruitment, retention and staff morale. Brighton & Hove Food Partnership supports the Living Wage as part of our campaign to prevent food poverty. Households have three basic areas of expenditure: fuel costs which have increased by 154% in the last 10 years, housing costs which in this city are high; and food which is often the item that is squeezed when other bills need paying. Food poverty is not just about people using food banks - it is also people on low incomes skipping meals or making less healthy food choices because of their budgets. This ongoing food poverty is impacting on the mental and physical health of residents. The difference between the minimum wage and the living wage for someone working a 40hr week is £54. This goes a long way towards improving what is in someone’s shopping basket. If you are experiencing food poverty, or know someone who is, we have information and resources on our website, or you can call us on 01273 431700. www.bhfood.org.uk/food-poverty-advice å @harvestbh

“We have given funding to the campaign through its formative years and will continue to support it next year as part of the wider business activity we commission from the Chamber. “I’m proud of this council’s record as a Living Wage employer and grateful for the support Unison has given us on this issue. I’m delighted that the Martlets and so many other local

employers have made the Living Wage pledge.” Paying staff the Living Wage – currently £7.85 an hour – is a voluntary commitment separate from the national minimum wage of £6.50 for adults over 21 that employers have to pay by law.

We support the Living Wage Campaign because we believe passionately that the city, and the people who live and work within it, needs a good wage structure for everyone to grow and prosper. The more money people have in their pocket each week, the more likely they are to spend locally, supporting other businesses. Shared parental leave – an opportunity for firms

Shopping streets invited to battle it out for cash boost A contest to crown the best British high street opens today. And the winners will be offered a share of the £50,000 cash prize pot, mentoring and help from digital marketing experts. London Road, Brighton, was shortlisted last year in the Local Parade category. It entered the contest having already won funding as a “Portas Pilot” – part of a project aimed at reviving the traditional high street. Government minister Penny Mordaunt said: “There is so much amazing innovation happening on our high streets. We want to reward the great work that is being done to improve these crucial assets as well as showcase ideas which can be a springboard for others to try. “The first competition last year was a tremendous success and I want this year to be even better.” The competition is designed to help revitalise high streets by promoting the great work that is being done and sharing good

ideas across the country. Last year’s winner was Belper in Derbyshire. Joanne Bamford, of the Belper Town Team, said: “Winning the Great British High Street has been a wonderful boost to the town, stimulating interest and encouraging new partners to work with us. “Local residents are more aware of how special their town is and the publicity has encouraged visitors from neighbouring areas

to make a trip to see what the town has to offer. “On the back of the competition we have received inquiries from new retailers considering expanding into the town, prospective residents looking to relocate and looking for a town with a real identity to coach companies planning to visit the area. “The award has provided us with a wonderful platform to promote our town and the innovative projects delivered by the partners. It has also generated a number of new ideas which we hope to implement to allow the town to continue to improve and build on the success. “We would really encourage villages, town and high streets to get involved in the 2015 competition.” Details can be found at www.thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk. The deadline for entries is Friday, July 17

Fiona Martin, co-founding director of Martin Searle Solicitors, explains the new rules on shared parental leave and how they could benefit your business. The introduction of shared parental leave has the potential to provide real benefits for your business – not least in our growing digital media community where these new rules could help attract the best candidates and freelancers. The new legal entitlement for eligible parents of babies born or adopted after 5 April is to share 50 weeks of leave between them. The mother still has to take the first two weeks herself. The starting point is to make sure all employees – male and female – are aware of the changes. Employees can break up their leave into chunks so develop clear policies. And establish a positive association by treating anyone who requests leave fairly. Many of Brighton’s digital media companies already offer fantastic benefits which

encourage work/life balance. Few, however, offer enhanced maternity or paternity pay. It is important to offer enhanced parental pay to both men and women to avoid potential discrimination claims. Talented local freelancers could be encouraged to apply for employed roles as the flexibility in their child’s first year plus long-term security might outweigh losing their freedom as a selfemployed consultant. Key female employees may return to their role sooner and male and female employees could break up the 50week period into chunks. This would reduce recruitment and training costs and smaller periods of leave are often easier to manage. The winners in business are likely to be those employers who see the possibilities in creating a working culture which emphasises equality for all. The Places I Eat

A taste of the country in the heart of town Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn

Tucked away at the top of Hamilton Road, The Chimney House is half table service restaurant (or gastro-pub if you will) and half local boozer. Harvey’s on tap, a decent spirits selection and friendly, welcoming bar-staff. The Chimney House ethos is simple: “quality food and drink in a relaxed and family friendly atmosphere”. Produce is sourced as locally as it can be and includes vegetables from Fin & Farm, meat from Garlic Wood Farm, and fish from both Shoreham and Newhaven boats. As you enter the large pub, one side is full of roaring laughter and rustic bar-snacks/lighter bites including homemade sausage rolls, potted shrimp and rarebit; and the other candle-lit, romantic without being too slushy and date-night heaven. The Chimney House isn’t just for wining and dining, families are most welcome and the food menu ensures that children are well catered for. Sitting facing the open plan kitchen - a great touch and always fantastic to see your food being prepared - we started with a refreshing house gin and Fentimans, whilst mulling over the menu. I couldn’t help but order a portion of pork crackling (£2), which turned out to be light curls of pig that really meltedin-the-mouth. A great pre-dinner nibble. The menu has a rural, countryside charm to it; a rarity found inside a city such as Brighton. Dishes change regularly, especially with the seasons and we agonised over parsnip soup, bread-crumbed pigs head, leek and stilton tart, smoked haddock with squid and celeriac, and pigeon with turnip and salted plum. We ordered a bottle of Italian Primitivo del Salento - a gorgeous

fruity red with hints of plum and black cherry - and started with pickled sardine with salsify, buttermilk, elder and rye (£6) and spelt and crisp bread, smoked egg yolk, sour cream and foraged leaves (£5.50). Delicately and beautifully presented, the sardine oozed a delicate but rich oil that paired beautifully with the subtle elder and rye, the latter of which gave a satisfying crunch to the plate. The buttermilk was an innovative and interesting addition to the dish and was exceptionally light. I couldn’t help but marvel at the charming nature of the dish and excellent balance of texture and flavour. The vegetarian starter was also very much enjoyed, with praise given to both presentation and flavour. For mains we grazed on mutton leg and shoulder with rape greens, Jerusalem artichoke and beer vinegar (£15) and a vegetarian tasting plate (£13) that contained a plethora of carefully constructed dishes such as turnip and malt, cauliflower fritter, carrot and whey and woodruff gel. The mutton was perfectly cooked and packed a lot of flavour into the four rounds of pink and brown flesh that curved around my plate. The meat paired well with the earthy, nutty Jerusalem

artichoke but a drizzle more of beer vinegar wouldn't have gone a miss. The impact of the rape greens should also be noted; peppery, crisp and great to see the kitchen team use this lesser-known vegetable. Coffee Chronicles by

Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli is more commonly known as The Godfather of Ice-cream. This isn't because of a penchant for horse heads or because he got fat and lost his looks there is no evidence to suggest either, but to be fair, there's also no evidence to the contrary. Irrespective of his equine fancies or his BMI, he gained his nickname by inheriting his father's ice-cream machine and making gelato available to every Tommaso, Riccardo and Aroldo. He was born in Sicily in 1651 and moved to France after his father died. He trained as a chef before getting a job with a guy called Pascal. Pascal was an Armenian immigrant who owned the only "café" in Paris - everyone else had "lemonade stalls". Even with Procopio as his apprentice, his business was failing, so in 1686

1 spoon of horseradish 1 potato Worcestershire sauce Chives

Olives 1 egg yolk 100 olive oil Half a red onion

Method Cut the potato with a mandolin into julienne, and fry until crispy. Slice the beef into very small dice and mix with the chopped onion and Worcestershire sauce, and then season.  Peel the apples (keep the skin in water).  Cook the apples in water until really soft, add the skin and horseradish, then blend until smooth.  Finish by leaving the dish in the freezer.  

Luis Rodriguez is demi chef de partie at Hilton Brighton Metropole he gave it to our man Procopio and off he went to London. Procopio changed the café's name to Le Procope and moved the stall to a more prominent and permanent position. He bought a bath house and ripped out all the fixtures and fittings and installed them in his new gaff. Chandeliers, mirrored walls and marble tables filled his cavernous new plot however bright it was outside, Le Procope was renowned for its dark and moody interior. Le Procope sold all the usual lemonade stall stock and also their trademark "frozen waters". As a kid in Sicily, Procopio mixed snow with honey and fruits, but now he was using his father's much-tinkered-with invention to mass produce what we would call sorbet. He was so good at it that he had a royal licence to make it for King Louis XIV. When he wasn't busy making people offers they couldn't refuse, Procopio was preoccupied with pioneering pre-eminent products, like his introduction of little porcelain bowls similar to egg cups. He

used them to serve - insert drumroll here - coffee. Comédie Français (a theatre) opened up right opposite Le Procope and this helped Procopio become the proud owner of the first literary café in Paris. His regulars included Voltaire, Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, Napoleon Bonaparte and our favourite - Oscar Wilde. Procopio changed Parisian culture and created a cafédwelling society which is now synonymous with Parisian lifestyle. As Paris' oldest restaurant, Le Procope is over 300 years old and is still very much in business. Procopio, however, is sleeping with the fishes. As Procopio didn't say anything particularly noteworthy, until we meet again next week, we'll leave you with a little something from Mr Wilde himself, "by giving us the opinions of the uneducated, journalism keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community". Parenting Time Waits For No Mum I did a terrible thing last week – I became a cliché. I forgot my humble beginnings as an expectant mum of one and slipped effortlessly into the role of mother superior. You know, one of those annoying friendly types who emerge with their “helpful” advice and anecdotes when you’re heavily pregnant and at your most desperate to get on and meet your baby. They’re the sort that come out with gems about trying to enjoy the last few weeks before your baby’s arrival, not to wish away your last, precious pre-parenting days. Well, last week that was me, exhorting my friend to try to make the most of this time doing nothing but waiting. I might even have mentioned a less than positive birth experience of a mutual friend. What was I thinking? If I can just say in my defence, I did realise quite quickly what I’d done and promptly apologised. But I was shocked, dear reader. Shocked at how easily I’d slipped into the role of know-it-all-mumof-one. I’ve resolved to be much more

on the ball with pregnant friends in future – after all, I was the one who, in their position, had an A4 print out of my plans for each day up to my due date after I finished work, so desperate was I to put the “maternity” into maternity leave. It was me too who was on the phone to my mum in tears when I was several days overdue because I just wanted to meet my baby. YESTERDAY. And yet there I was, telling my pregnant friend to “make the most” of this time – forgetting, it seems, about the multiple nocturnal toilet trips, the achey hips, the twitchy legs, the cramps and twinges and the constant symptom spotting for a sign that labour’s on its way. Not to mention the cravings for cured meats and a big slab of brie. Shame on me!

Pretty Good Thinking

Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan

Last year, the worldwide beauty industry was valued at £300 billion. It is predicted to grow 29% to £388 billion by 2017, according to Cosmetic Executive Women, the industry body. The grey pound is strong, too. Women over 45 spend £2 billion annually on cosmetics, skincare, and toiletries. The 50-plus population will grow by 38% between now and 2035, but you certainly won’t know by the look of us. Frankly, if you are in your 40s and your mum is in her 60s, you probably both enjoy similar products. The market is currently heaving with Mother's Day delights; newsletters with free postage, time-limited but generous discounts, plus loads of two-forones at the point of sale, so it pays to shop around. Pure Potions, a Brighton brand, has a great new product that is half price (usually £10.99) when you purchase a 100ml daily moisturiser (RRP £13.99). Skin Salvation Intensive Hand Cream is free from petro-chemicals, parabens, and perfumes - and is rich in essential fatty acids and skin nourishing vitamins to replenish the natural barrier. Sea Buckthorn, Shea Butter and Hemp Seed Oil essential fatty acids are fed into the skin to replenish and restore. Chickweed, calendula, chamomile and nettle combat the itchy redness of dry or cracked skin. It comes in a handy 50ml size and is suitable for everyone (even babies) that are prone to hand eczema, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis. Barefoot SOS Repair + Renew is a luxurious response to fine lines, dry, blemished or scarred skin, uneven skin tone, environmental damage, or rosacea. Rosa Mosqueta, Argan and Evening Primrose oils are blended to perfection for mature, dry or damaged skin. The nutrientrich, botanical extracts include Borage, Macadamia and Olive Squalane oils. Free from paraffin, parabens, SLS, artificial colours and at least 98% naturally-derived, Barefoot SOS is suitable for vegans and has not been tested on animals. At the moment, you can snag a Barefoot SOS Rosehip Blend Collection in a stylish pink beauty bag for £35. It contains Daily Replenishing Cream: enriched with skin-renewing Rosa Mosqueta Oil, nourishing Argan and Borage Oils and collagen-boosting Vitamins A and E for a smoother, revitalised complexion. The Smoothing Eye Serum has ultra-smoothing Rosa Mosqueta Oil, Arnica and Calendula extracts to help reduce dark circles while Euphrasisa extract (Eyebright) soothes and refreshes.

Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Brighton and Hove Albion return to the friendly surroundings of the Amex tomorrow (Saturday) after another less-than-perfect performance on the road. The Seagulls lost 2-1 at Reading on Tuesday night – spurning a glorious chance to move 12 points clear of the last relegation spot and making it five away games without a win. Chris Hughton’s men have scored just two goals in their last half dozen games on their travels and have not tasted away-day victory since beating Charlton Athletic 1-0 back on January 10. In contrast, however, their

Chris Hughton Albion manager (Speaking after defeat at Reading)

home form has been impressive, with the Albion on a run of three wins in a row at the Amex and four wins from their last five home games. Tomorrow they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers knowing they will have to be at their best to continue their encouraging Falmer form. Wolves have won three of their last six away games and sit an encouraging eighth in the hotly-contested Championship table, with genuine aspirations towards the end-of-season playoffs. Key to their good form has been the form of strike duo Benik Afobe and Bakary Sako. Afobe has seven goals for Wolves since joining in January, including in

‘‘

It was a difficult pitch to play on and they played to their strengths – very direct. "We needed to make sure – in the first half – that we looked after the ball better. We needed to keep the score at 1-1 for longer. It’s a concern when we concede goals.

each of his side’s last two games. Sako leads the Molineux scoring charts with 11 league strikes and is available to face the Albion after seeing the red card received against Watford rescinded. Chris O’Grady will hope to build on his first league goal for the Albion after finding the net from the spot against Reading, while Hughton is likely to shuffle his Seagulls pack following the disappointing midweek result for which he made a number of changes to his starting 11. Fans will hope to see Joao Teixeira unleashed on Wolves. The on-loan Liverpool prospect has been in sparkling form of late at the Amex and is fastbecoming a key creative figure in the Seagulls attack.

"We can’t allow Mackie to have that much time and space. It was a fairly scrappy game. "We have to dig deep for these types of games. There weren’t many clear-cut chances. In the areas where we needed to show more quality, we didn’t.”

Radio Reverb’s manic 52-hour long live Reverbathon came and went in a flash, and Ady and Al were delighted to be taking part. We had a two-hour special, featuring guests Paul Beirne (Albion’s Head of Commercial Development), the Argus’ Brian Owen, still nursing his broken elbow, and the BBC’s social media guru Jem Stone (together

with his son Oscar), plus regulars Andy Bass, Vicky Lank and Phil Shelley. We also have to say a special thanks to our sponsors and generous donors – too many to mention in full – who have contributed towards keeping Radio Reverb brilliant. Visit www.radioreverb.com and hit the donate button. Do this while the Roar is live and we may even play a tune for you. No One Direction – guaranteed

American Express Community Stadium, Brighton Friday 20th March 2015. Kick-off 7.55pm

The sun is out. Spring is here. Well, maybe. Many a man is considering whether to give the lawnmower its first run out of the year. I think I might just wait. Two years ago, at this time of year, we were engulfed in snow. So, what's this got to do with football? Well, in recent months much of the talk ahead of games has been about the state of the pitches. Blackpool was a bog. Sheffield Wednesday was tacky. Bolton was bobbly. Even Reading on Tuesday caused a few problems for the players. No excuses, of course. It has also become an obstacle to the one-time routine post-match

interview. In Berkshire this week, cameraman Tim and I watched as three buzzing machines edged closer to cutting our toenails. So, we scoured the bowels of the Madejski Stadium for a quiet spacious spot. No go. In the end we had to conduct it at the foot of a stairwell. Credit to Mr Hughton. I’ve actually had to record interviews in a variety of places. The car, the changing room, the bar, the kitchen. On the last day of the season at Notts County, due to a pitch invasion, I spoke to Gus Poyet in a corridor so thin our noses were virtually touching. Luckily

my breath didn’t smell of garlic. (Ref complaint from Uwe Rosler to a colleague). Many bosses don’t enjoy the camera glare so soon after the final whistle. Nowadays, they are generally railroaded into a big press conference after the ‘flash’ interviews. Hughton may not serve up the juicy headlines of some managers but if he is as professional in his dealings on the pitch as he is in the far flung crevices of the Mad Stad, Albion should be OK.

When we nearly went all the way Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion The FA Cup quarter finals last weekend were a bit of a damp squib compared to the excitement of the earlier rounds. It was a rather different story in Brighton and Hove 32 years ago this week. Norwich City were the visitors at the Goldstone Ground at the same stage of the competition and the two towns were almost beside themselves with anticipation. A disappointing campaign – in the old First Division – had seen crowds dip below 10,000, thanks largely to the sleep-inducing fare served up by Mike Bailey’s negative side. But, salvation would come from the diminutive former Liverpool midfielder, Jimmy Melia, who took over the reins in December 1982. His style was infinitely more entertaining than his predecessor’s but was not particularly conducive to the rough and tumble of First Division football. In contrast, it appeared to suit the FA Cup rather well! After a Hove stalemate in round three, Newcastle United were dispatched at St James’

Brighton and Hove Albion's Goldstone Ground

Park, courtesy of a goal from returning hero Peter Ward, and two disallowed efforts from the bubblepermed Geordie demi-god Kevin Keegan. Next, Manchester City, who back in the 1980s lived within their means, were easily brushed aside 4-0 to earn a fifth-round trip to reigning league champions, at Anfield. In those days Liverpool never lost at home, especially not to a team who, at that juncture, hadn’t won on the road all season. Lady luck favoured the Albion again as usually rock-steady penalty taker Phil Neal fluffed his lines and Melia’s men won 2-1, much to the delight of the little Liverpudlian, who somewhat unwisely – but

completely in the moment – led his players from the celebrating blue and white throng of the away end, skipping like a spring lamb, towards the swaying – and seething – Kop. As he crossed the halfway line a deafening crescendo of boos hastened an about-turn straight down the tunnel. Over 28,000 fans were packed into the Goldstone like sardines for the Canaries’ visit and – again – fortune favoured the Albion as the referee waved play on for Jimmy Case to bulldoze through the green and yellow defence to score the only goal of the game in front of an absolutely ecstatic North Stand. You really can’t beat a good cup run. Maybe next season!
