Strains showing after cut in the number of mental health beds Frank le Duc @BHcitynews
Mental health services are under pressure in Brighton and Hove after a cut in the number of local beds. A report this week said that more patients were being sent out of the area and a local private hospital was able to treat just a fraction of those who were being referred to it. Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust, the mental health trust for the area, told councillors that 55 patients had been referred to the Priory, in Hove, but only eight were admitted. A report said: “On most occasions referrals to the Priory were declined on grounds

of risk and acuity.” The private hospital does not have a psychiatric intensive care unit. And many of the patients needing beds had “additional complexities around risk, dual diagnosis with substance misuse issues, forensic histories, failed accommodation and tenancies, all of which impact on length of stay”. The report also said: “While the Hove Priory has been able to provide some additional local capacity it has not had the effect of preventing all out of area admissions. This is largely due to other system pressures for mental health beds including the demand at the Hove Priory by private patients as well as demand for beds from other NHS
trusts across the south east.” The report, to the council’s Health and Wellbeing Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: “The number of residents admitted to a bed outside the city in any week has ranged from zero to fourteen. In the last year, since April 1 2014, a total of 1,513 bed days have been within the private or independent sector.” Money saved from reducing the number of beds in Hove is earmarked for more community care. But there have been delays in recruiting suitable staff. Two nurses intended to speed up the discharge of patients from hospital have not started work yet. The report said they were needed as many patients were previously unknown to the trust.
Hove Park School head Derek Trimmer, pictured with wife Nicky, said goodbye this week. Mr Trimmer, who is going to a new job in Kent, heaped praise on pupils at the school’s annual prizegiving. Over four years the school has become one of the most improved in the country. Mr Trimmer said: “These four years have been very special. I will look back on these as the golden years. I have shaped a team that will make a huge difference. This year when the results come through ... I’ll be there to celebrate them with you. But it’s not the end. It’s just another stage in the journey. Thank you to the parents, the staff and most of all the students for being Hove Park School.”

Mind the gap in schools Poorer children and those in care lag too far behind youngsters from middle class homes. Politicians are putting pressure on local schools to improve their GCSE performance. The matter has come up twice in a few weeks and was the subject of a heated debate at the final council meeting last night before the local elections in May. Conservative education spokesman Andrew Wealls criticised the Green Party for lacking ambition for the poor and the marginalised – those they say they represent. Councillor Wealls said that they had spoken about reducing the gap in performance but had fallen a long way short. And he accused Labour of failing to say what they would do. At an earlier meeting Councillor Wealls said that the performance of Longhill and Varndean School in particular was appalling. Referring to those who qualify for free school meals, he said: “We’re almost in the realms of nine out of ten kids in those schools not getting GCSEs in English and maths. That performance is really dreadful and unacceptable.” And Councillor Wealls wrote
Councillor Andrew Wealls
recently: “We should hang our heads in shame! The fact that four in five of our poorest children leave school without these core qualifications barely raises a shrug of the shoulders among our city’s politicians and media.” Labour Anne Pissaridou told the council’s last Children and Young People Committee meeting: “Can I just endorse what Andrew said about those schools. I’m just worried that there hasn’t been any improvement in these schools and I know money has been put in.” Councillor Sue Shanks, who chairs the committee, said: “Local authorities don’t control schools. We need to throw it back to schools. “We had a conference recently when BACA (the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy) shared some of what it was doing.” And she added: “Nobody’s complacent about this.” Jo Lyons, assistant director of children’s services, told the committee: “At every one of our schools, closing the gap is our top priority.” She said that every single school had a strategy to improve the performance of children on free school meals in their crucial exams. And she added: “A lot of work is going on with governors.” Bevendean Primary School and Hove Park School have both received ministerial letters of congratulation from the Department for Education for the progress that they have made in closing the gap.

A different practice Health Minister Norman Lamb, above, visited a doctors’ surgery in Hove this week after hearing about its innovative approach from Baroness Shirley Williams. The Brighton Health and Wellbeing Centre, run by Dr Laura Marshall-Andrews, describes itself as one of Britain’s first NHS GP practices to integrate conventional medicine with complementary therapies and healing arts. Patients at the surgery told the minister about the benefits of things like singing, dancing and art therapy. One said that the doctors didn’t just write a prescription for medicine. And another shed tears as she praised the benefits of the treatment she had received there. Mr Lamb said: “I’ve been fascinated by this innovative approach. It’s more open-minded. Many patients have entrenched problems. I’ve been enormously impressed today. I want the NHS to embrace this.”
Vegfest says no to UKIP Vegetarians appear to have lost any appetite that they may have had for UKIP. Vegfest has withdrawn an invitation to one of the party’s candidates, Nigel Carter, to address a political conference at the Brighton Centre tomorrow. One of the organisers said that the decision had been made on security grounds after a deluge of complaints on social media, adding: “The scale of threats of disruption to the event are unprecedented.” Mr Carter, who is standing in Brighton Pavilion at the general election in May, said that freedom of speech was being challenged by prejudiced people. He asked: “What are they scared of? What don’t they want you to find out?”

1976 | Saturday, March 27 A memorable day in the history of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club: manager Peter Taylor decided to bring on a slightly-built 20-year-old forward to replace leading scorer Fred Binney at league leaders Hereford United. With his first touch, on his Albion debut, Peter Ward netted to level the score. A legend was born.

It’s time again to lose an hour so we can recalibrate our clocks and our brains to British Summer Time. At a stroke, we’ll conjure up lighter evenings, hastening our arrival into spring. On Saturday, March 28, at 8.30pm WWF’s Earth Hour will call on us to switch off our lights and turn the spotlight onto climate change. The event is reportedly the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring and uniting millions around the world to use their power for change. In the darkness of Earth Hour, we can reflect on the environmental burden of our lifestyles - while marvelling at the wonders, in its absence, of electric light. 2015 is the UN International Year of Light. UNESCO is celebrating the importance of light to life and to culture - and highlighting how optical technologies can be
harnessed to promote sustainable development and offer solutions to worldwide challenges of energy, communications, and healthcare. In Brighton and Hove our 19,000 street lamps help make our streets safe every night of the year. It’s easy to forget that a quarter of the world - 1.5 billion people - live with no artificial light at all. While powering our street lights needs four thousand tonnes of CO2 per year, swathes of Africa and south Asia share dark nights for people. So, in this Year of Light, and at this weekend’s Earth Hour, we can at least acknowledge this imbalance and look at what we can do to remedy it. Here, we’re installing thousands of low-energy street lamps to slash their carbon cost. Meanwhile, some of the poorest and most isolated communities are using solar power for lighting, mobile phone charging, and healthcare provision without the carbon downside. For a planet so bathed in light, we’ve still barely started to tap its potential. Enjoy the lighter evenings!

New technology Brighton and Hove City Council has received £1.83 million to invest in improving the transport network to reduce congestion, improve road safety and enhance the management of traffic incidents. The money, awarded by the Local Transport Body of the Coast to Capital LEP, will be spent on technologies to improve travel for road users, including traffic management systems for smoothing traffic flow, reducing congestion and making journey times more reliable. Traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and variable message signs for travel and car park information will all be part of the investment. Councillor Ian Davey, lead member for transport, said: “Technology is developing all the time and we want to harness the very latest for the benefit of all our road users.”
Parenting Time Waits For No Mum There’s nothing like a visit to the park in the spring sunshine – not just for the warmth of the sun on your back, the sound of the birds in the trees and the opportunity for your young person to blow away the cobwebs and let off some steam. No, for the parent of a child at nursery, it also provides vital clues about those features of their day that don’t make it onto the handover sheet. Namely, how your precious little one interacts with others’ precious little ones. Now, the sun having been distinctly lacking from our lives for some time now, I’ll hold my hands up and admit that it’s been a while since our last visit to the park – we’ve opted for kicking a ball about in a field or tramping through muddy woodland instead, or, you know, watching a DVD. Anyhow, this sizeable hiatus between visits meant I noticed a real change in Tibbons’ park play when we went this week.

Where he used to crave nothing more than setting up his cappuccino stall and serving his one loyal customer (that would be me), he was now running about with glee, interacting with other children. Albeit this was sometimes with a bit of a glare and a roar – I like to think it’s a friendly thing, the other children didn’t bat an eyelid so it might even be some sort of playground code. I stepped in at one point to provide a quick refresher course on the art of sharing, but for the rest of the time Tibbons was away, confidently crossing bridges, climbing everything in sight and including other children in his plans – even letting them go first. It was great – not because I don’t love to play too, you understand (in fact, I secretly fear this latest development means I’ll never get to go on another slide again), but to see Tibbons in his element. Long may the sunshine last!
Making Friends with Anxiety by Sarah Rayner All of us at some point in our life will suffer from anxiety. How we deal with it varies from person to person, of course. But when it turns into one of those blindingly-awful panic attacks, this would be the book that I recommend. From the Brighton author of the best-selling novel, One Moment, One Morning, comes a self-help book packed with tips, exercises, and insights to ease worry and panic. This book draws on Rayner's experience of anxiety disorder and recovery. She explores this with humour and insights. If you have ever suffered from a panic attack, you’ll know just how terrifying and
debilitating they can be. It can feel like you are dying. And then the awful realisation that it’s "just” a panic attack can leave you feel guilty and even more ridden with anxiety. That’s where this book really comes into its own. It will give you a better understanding of what actually happens to your body during an attack and how best to cope with it - as well as preventing it happening again. It can be that once you understand that several elements commonly contribute to panic or anxiety - including adrenaline, negative thinking, and fear of the future - it can seem much more manageable and life can become more normal. This book reads like chatting with an old friend, one with wit, wisdom, and experience. Perfect for anyone suffering from this difficult disorder.

Blues and Greens nail colours to the mast The Conservatives and the Greens published their local election manifestos this week. Copies of the Green Party document, Rejuvenating Our City, were handed out at Moshimo – the Japanese restaurant opposite Brighton Town Hall – along with cups of green tea. Councillor Sue Shanks told fellow councillors and candidates: “We’re very proud of our record (but) we’re not going to rest on our laurels.” And Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “We need to fight for another four years. We are asking our citizens to come with us on our journey and vote Green again at the elections on (Thursday) 7 May.” Key manifesto pledges include ■ Build 500 social rented homes and a new generation of council homes with genuinely affordable rents; ■ Open a new secondary school and come up with a new catchment area plan for fair admissions; ■ Extend the cycle lane network, complete the Valley Gardens revamp and bid for funds to renew more of the seafront arches; ■ Improve air quality and road safety by making walking and

Brighton, Hove and Portslade. It pledges to bring back a reliable refuse and recycling service by putting the organisation into the hands of those who work for it along the lines of John Lewis. The manifesto says: “The Conservatives trust those people delivering frontline services to know the best way for the council to improve. “We will therefore be reducing unnecessary and expensive senior
management overheads and trusting those working in services such as Cityclean, Cityparks and Parking Services to take over the running of these operations – transforming them into public service mutuals.” The Tories also promised “an end to rip-off parking charges” and that “council tax will not go up”. Conservative group leader Councillor Geoffrey Theobald said: “Our young people need somewhere
to live. The city’s housing needs will be addressed in a grown-up way. We will reduce the waiting list for social housing and ensure over a thousand new homes for local people are built. “A Conservative-run city council will not just talk about a clean and green environment – we will deliver. Valley Gardens will be transformed, Black Rock redeveloped, the King Alfred rebuilt and new public open spaces created. Our offer to you all is credible, affordable and achievable.” Labour published its manifesto in early March. For more information, visit: www. brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk

Poll watch To be a Liberal Democrat, you have to be an optimist. Nowhere more so than in Brighton and Hove. Jeremy Gale, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Central Hove, is one such person. Having joined in 2009, he has previously been employed for the party, most notably as constituency organiser and researcher for David Laws, who led negotiations for the Liberal Democrats before the coalition with the Conservative Party. Mr Gale, very much the public face of the Lib Dems locally, has worked hard in a "pavement politics" campaign in Central Hove for most of the last year. In truth, though, the potentiallydecisive question on May 7 concerns how many previous Liberal Democrat supporters will switch allegiance and who will they vote for this time round. Some might, of course, think that Nick Clegg and the coalition have been such a success that they vote Liberal Democrat (or even Conservative). More likely, they could switch to Labour or the Greens. Or stay at home. The results may be closer this time, but the outcome could be the same. If, however, there is a change, it is most likely to be a Conservative gain. Regardless, Andrew Wealls, one of the city's most influential Conservatives, must surely be reelected.

No, I'm out of step with élite Dan Wilson says in his column (March 20 2015) that “latent snobbery” lies behind my objections to a Wetherspoons coming to London Road, and that I am a member of a “muesli-fuelled NOletariat”. All entertaining stuff but I demand the right of reply so that I don’t get labelled, unjustly, as someone who eats muesli. For the record, I am an enthusiastic carnivore. As a South African, I am never happier than when I have a supply of ostrich biltong, boerewors and droewors, supplied by the non-organic Susman’s Best Beef Biltong Company in Newhaven. And what on earth is a “Fairtrade cotton jute bag”? I’m a rather boring middle age man in a grey suit, the complete antithesis of trendy, according to my daughter. As for the charge of “latent snobbery of Brighton’s ruling class”, I have a tendency to be a local “rent-a-gob” but my views
are often so out of step with the Brighton élite that I attract the wrath of the likes of the Etoneducated Dan Wilson. “Wetherspoongate” is a good example of this. I have lived, shopped and worked in and around London Road for 25 years or more. I have seen its decline and its recent resurgence. London Road is the up and coming area of Brighton. There has been tens of millions of pounds invested in the area, including in new student accommodation, the fabulous refurbishment of the Open Market, and new housing, as well as the arrival of some new great places to eat, including Alcampo Lounge, the quirky Emporium, and the wonderful Semolina (you must try their Sunday roasts). The Cascade Recovery Café in Baker Street is a very welcome addition, providing a safe and dry environment for men and women in recovery from addiction.
Brighton Housing Trust’s Addiction Services is just five minutes’ walk from the proposed Wetherspoons. For the record I did question the licences for Alcampo and the Emporium but was satisfied that neither would be a “vertical” drinking establishment. A Wetherspoons or any large alcohol-focused venue in London Road is the last thing we need.

Open letter to Simon Kirby MP We are writing to you in response to your letter to Kemptown residents concerning the NHS Reinstatement Bill. The Bill proposes to end the privatisation of the NHS in England (www. nhsbill2015.org). You stated that the coalition government “will not privatise the NHS” and yet that is precisely what it is doing. Parliamentary records (via theyworkforyou.com) show that you consistently voted for the Health and Social Care Bill which became law in April 2013. Since then at least a third of all new NHS contracts that have been tendered have gone to profitmaking companies, according to research by the British Medical Journal. Commercial contracting wastes billions of pounds each year and the interest payments alone from private finance initiatives is around £1.6 billion. This money could be invested in our healthcare instead. The government pledged to cut £20 billion from the NHS by 2015. Its £3 billion top-down reorganisation has already wasted hundreds of millions of pounds needlessly sacking and rehiring 4,000 staff. One in three NHS walk-in centres have been closed or downgraded, A&E waiting times are the highest in 10 years and have failed to meet government targets for treating
patients within four hours. The UK has one of the lowest number of hospital beds per capita in Europe and, with 8,000 beds cut, levels of overcrowding in hospitals have repeatedly breached recommended safety limits. For the first time in six years there are more than three million people on hospital waiting lists. You say the government’s reform of the NHS is creating 13,000 more doctors and nurses compared to 2010. Yet 8,000 specialist nurses have been axed, GP funding has been slashed by £943 million and a quarter of a million NHS staff now exist on zero hours contracts. However, spending on management consultants has doubled since 2010 and now stands at £640 million, enough to pay for 2,000 nurses. You declared you had saved the Eaton Place surgery in Kemptown. Yet the surgery has now closed and 5,600 patients are struggling to find a GP or have to travel across town to already overcrowded surgeries. This will only add further pressure to our hospital’s A&E department. The privatisation of the NHS you’re supporting has no democratic mandate – 84% of the British people want a public NHS (YouGov poll).
You argue that you “would be first to oppose” these reforms if Air ambulance wereCycling hubsrisk to Torch walk NHS” “there any the but you also voted to keep the risk register hidden from the public. We’ve outlined overwhelming evidence that the NHS is at great risk from the coalition government and, ahead of the election, we hope you will put your constituents ahead of your political ambitions and support the Reinstatement Bill. George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, praised a Hove air ambulance charity during his budget and promised to direct extra funds for it. He praised local charities across the country including the Lucy Air Ambulance that transports children requiring urgent care and is based in Hove. Lucy, which stands “Life’s Urgent Care for the Young”, transfers about 12,000 children each year and 10 per cent of these would benefit from the proposal.
Railway stations in the city are set to receive government funding of around £765,000 to improve bicycle facilities. Hove Railway Station Cycle Hub will see 150 extra cycle spaces and a maintenance, hire and repair business. London Road and Moulescoomb stations will also see improved shelter facilities, lighting and signage. A £1.5 million cycle hub at Brighton Station, with a café and space for 500 bikes, opens next week.
The seventh annual Seafront Torch Walk is set to take place to raise awareness of climate change. Brighton and Hove City Council’s Healthwalks team will be taking part in World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour by joining with WWF supporters, regular healthwalkers and local residents for the mile walk along the seafront. The Maracatu samba band will be playing Latin rhythms as walkers travel along from the Bandstand to Brighton Pier.

A director come playwright is celebrating his twentieth consecutive year at the Brighton Fringe. David Weedall, the award winning writer, will this year bring “2095: A Mind Odyssey” to the stage, a play concerned with the effects of the Internet on our minds. Mr Weedall said: “I am delighted to premiere my twentieth consecutive show at the Brighton Fringe, which is such a stimulus for so much creative talent for hundreds of performing artists and promising new, young talent.”
Deichmann shoes, Europe’s biggest shoe retailer, opened this week. The retailer opened in Western Road on the site where the old Topshop stood. The store underwent a £440,000 refurbishment to create a customer friendly layout, with all the stock available on the shop floor so that customers can easily locate and try on items. Rozanna Mahmood, Store Manager of Deichmann Brighton, said: “We’re looking forward to getting to know all the local shoppers and hopefully becoming a well-loved fixture on the high street.”
Two of Brighton’s leading charities are to merge. The Whitehawk Inn and Brighton and Housing Trust (BHT) are joining forces, with both retaining their separate indentities. In a statement, they said: “The education and life-skills charity, the Whitehawk Inn, will be joining Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) in a move designed to consolidate the positions of both organisations as leading providers of specialist services to the communities within which they work.”

Walkabout returns The Walkabout, an Australianthemed bar, is to return to Brighton five years after closing down. The bar chain has repurchased its former site, currently Bedrock, and will soon close for one month as it undergoes a £600,000 refurbishment ready for the summer. John Leslie, CEO of Walkabout operator iNTERTAIN said: “We are very happy to be returning to Brighton and even more so to have been able to reclaim our original, fantastic location on West Street.”

Unemployment rises
A charity group are launching a new campaign to tackle suicide rates in Brighton and Hove, which suffers from a far higher suicide rate than the national average. The Grassroots Suicide Prevention charity is working to open up channels of communication around suicide and help to reduce statistics which indicate that over 30% of businesses in the city have been impacted by suicide. Their plan includes training for businesses so that staff are given the skills to prevent suicide and can talk out about issues.
The UK Independence Party has expelled one of the four MEPs who represents Brighton and Hove in the European Parliament. Janice Atkinson and her chief of staff Christine Hewitt have 14 days to appeal against their expulsion from UKIP. It follows the filming of Ms Hewitt asking a restaurant boss for an inflated receipt to claim on expenses. Mrs Atkinson said that she planned to appeal after a disciplinary hearing last week found that she had brought the party into disrepute.
The unemployed claimant count rose slightly for the second month in a row, according to official figures. The number of people claiming jobseekers allowance in the city rose to 3,540 in February from 3,520 in January. In February last year, the number of claimants stood at 4,790. This represented 2.4% of the working age population, compared with 1.8% last month. The South East average is 1.3% while the average for Great Britain as a whole is 2%.

Paper cuts More jobs are to be lost at The Argus just weeks after its new editor took the helm. Brighton and Hove News reported that consultations had started on plans to make two of the three staff in the features department redundant, as well as two photographers. Another post is set to be lost from newspaper sales. It is not known yet which of the paper’s five photographers, who between then have won a clutch of awards, will be affected. Following dozens of jobs being
lost in the past few years, staff at the paper are believed to be saddened but not surprised at the latest round of redundancies. In 2010, the bulk of the paper’s subbing operation was moved to Southampton, with the loss of six sub-editor posts and in 2011, six more editorial posts went along with 13 of the paper’s home delivery team. Last year, all but one of the remaining five sub-editor positions were scrapped with the move of the whole subbing team
to Weymouth, along with the web editor position. Editor Michael Beard resigned last year, and his successor Mike Gilson, formerly of the Belfast Telegraph, took over earlier this month.

Detectives have led a series of drugs raids resulting in 16 arrests and the seizure of £50,000 cash, together with six kilos of heroin, with an estimated street value of £600,000. Officers co-ordinated the raids at nine addresses in Brighton, one in Eastbourne, and one in Liverpool. 13 people (10 men and three women) were arrested in Brighton and Eastbourne on suspicion of conspiracy to supply heroin, while one woman was arrested in Brighton on suspicion of obstructing the police.
Liberal Democrats in Brighton and Hove have given their support to moves to get the Hippodrome declared an ‘Asset of Community Value’ as part of efforts to save the historic building. A recent proposal from the Vue cinema group prompted opposition as it would leave only the shell of the building intact. Jeremy Gale, the Liberal Democrats’ candidate for Central Hove, said: “We Lib Dems introduced the Asset of Community Value protection in the 2011 Localism Act precisely for cases such as this”.
Sussex County Cricket Club is launching a treasure hunt between the Palace Pier and the Hove Lawns by King’s Esplanade. “The Golden Oyster Scavenger Hunt” will involve eight golden oysters hidden on the beaches containing a golden invitation for one person to see an upcoming NatWest T20 Blast fixture at the BrightonandHoveJobs. com County Ground or free Junior Sharkz membership. The competition will start on Monday, March 30.

Local MPs put questions to David Cameron at the final Prime Minister’s Questions. Mr Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown, spoke of decreased unemployment, increased business start-ups, and a £480 million investment in a new hospital. Ms Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, questioned the late train service between Brighton and London Victoria and called for a fairer compensation system to be put in place for commuters.
Brighton and Hove Albion has announced an educational partnership between the Sir Robert Woodard Academy and the club's academy. Sue Parris, the welfare and player services manager said: “The football club is very keen to stress the importance of education to all our Academy players and we ensure all our apprentices are educated to level 3, A-Level or equivalent, ensuring players have options to pursue when their football career comes to an end.”
The Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust ended a £15 million a year contract with Sodexo, the cleaning firm. The contract, first awarded in 2012, has been problematic, with staff not receiving their wages properly and threats of industrial action due to the company not adopting the Living Wage. The GMB union also raised concerns about safety due to a lack of basic equipment. The contract is ending by mutual agreement.

These will be managed by sales manager Andrew Booker and which will complement the highly-successful services already available to landlords and tenants. Drinks and light refreshments are available at the informal event, from 1pm and 7pm. It should provide the perfect opportunity for local residents to find out how Your Move – the UK’s biggest estate agency brand – can help sellers promote their property. Your Move works with colleagues across the country and has an impressive online presence at www.your-move.co.uk – the UK’s most visited estate agency website. It markets homes on www.rightmove.co.uk and www.zoopla.co.uk too. To celebrate the launch, anyone who instructs the new sales team to sell their property from
Wednesday 1 April to Tuesday 30 June will pay a promotional fee of just 0.75 per cent plus VAT* And for every sale completed in 2015, 5 per cent of the selling fee will be donated to the Sussex Beacon. The Brighton charity offers specialist care and support for men, women and families affected by HIV and AIDS. The Queen’s Road branch manager Sam Dunnings said: “The diversity of the properties that are available locally, together with the fantastic location and amenities, will no doubt attract many different types of purchasers. And as a company we are in a perfect position to help sellers in promoting their property to them, wherever in the country these buyers may be. “The fact that we have gained a reputation for great customer service locally – and that Your Move manages to help a customer move every five minutes – simply adds to our appeal and, we hope, will encourage even more people to come to our event and to find out how our new expanded team can help them.” Call today on 01273 778588 or 01273 710746 or email brighton@your-move.co.uk or brightonlettings@your-move.co.uk

We need to balance needs of pubs, clubs and neighbours Peter Marks @petermarks100
I was recently asked to speak at a Westminster Social Policy Forum on the future of the UK high street. As traditional retail comes under pressure from the internet the late night economy is at last being seen as part of the solution to empty premises. As the UK’s largest nightclub operator, we’re passionate about what we do and believe that, when late night operators get it right, they add real value to the economy and help to create vibrant town centres. The late night economy comprises of anywhere that trades after 6pm. It is a large and often overlooked piece of our economy, accounting for 6 per cent of GDP, 8 per cent of UK businesses, 10 per cent of all jobs and 27 per cent of town and city centre turnover. The sector also creates a huge amount of employment,
especially for the under 24s, which has been a primary concern for the UK since 2008. In the last year alone, the night time economy has created 37,000 new jobs and generated £66 billion of sales, delivering significant tax returns for the government. Over the last three years Luminar has invested over £20 million in transforming our night club estate, including £1 million at PRYZM Brighton. We have some fantastic venues in great locations and we want to see a healthy economy in our town centres. A new or invested night club can often boost a town or city centre far better than any other single café, bar or pub because we have the capacity, the marketing budgets and the expertise to bring people back into town. When a nightclub ceases trading the local night time economy usually follows a downward spiral. No one picks up the trade, the town gets quieter. Things are getting better and most of us remain cautiously
optimistic. The latest CGA Peach report also shows that confidence is the highest for years. But just when things are improving, we have another potential issue to deal with – “permitted development rights” (PDR) introduced in May 2013. Put simply, a vacant office block, often having laid empty for several years, can now be developed into residential premises. On the face of it, this sounds like a great idea that we would all support. It helps the housing issue, revitalises town centres, and makes use of unwanted office space. So what’s the problem? Because it doesn’t matter if you have had 30 years in a site as a bar, restaurant, club or live music venue, a new resident has the ability to complain about the noise from the venue or other public nuisance and restrict hours or even revoke your licence. Unfortunately, a number of bars in Brighton and Hove, including the Blind Tiger and Ouch Bar have already closed
after noise complaints. The answer of course is not to stop the transference of use from old offices to accommodation. It can be a good idea. But it needs more thought. We either need town centre zones, without such accommodation, that allow late night economies to flourish, or an understanding that should someone move into a building that was developed into living space after an existing Luminar has invested £1 million in PRYZM in Brighton licensed premises, the We believe that we can all residents have limited rights to object to a licence that continue to be part of the success could impact employment and story for rejuvenating areas like Brighton and Hove but this investment. The good news is that Brighton will only happen if we all work is thriving and we, like other together to ensure harmony late night operators, are keen to reigns between the needs of the continue to work with licensing economy and the residents in our and planning teams to maintain city centres. a healthy balance between the needs of residents and that of the Peter Marks is the chief executive of Luminar late night economy.

Remembering some of our characterful old bookshops Graham Chainey
Brighton was once famous for its secondhand bookshops. But, as Graham Greene lamented back in 1973, “far more shops disappear than new ones open. Even Brighton is not what it was.” Four attritious decades on, few remain. Not just bookshops, but antique shops, junk shops, and all the other interesting little shops, which once gave the city its special bohemian character, have vanished - replaced by too many slick boutiques, bars, and eateries. The best of the survivors and long may it endure - has to be Colin Page’s shop at 36 Duke Street, with pricey antiquarian items on the ground floor and cheaper general stock in the basement, accessed down a Carrollesque corkscrew stair. Begun in the 1970s, it was taken over in 1999 by the present owner, John Loska. He is one of the few booksellers left who does not trade on the internet; 80%
of sales are apparently to trade. Other survivors include Brighton Books, in Kensington Gardens, and the Studio Bookshop in Kemptown. Among long-gone shops were those of William J Smith at 41-3 North Street (“150,000 volumes in stock” in 1892), George Sexton at 53 Ship Street (lasting from 1885 to 1979), and KJ Bredon at 22 Prince Albert Street. There used to be several in Trafalgar Street. Combridges in Church Road, Hove, lasted from Edwardian times to the 1960s. Judy Middleton, who used to work there, recalls the antiquarian department at No 70, managed by Ken Lane, as lined with shelves stretching so high that an immense ladder had to be employed. There was an ancient telephone, worked by turning a handle, to communicate with the other branch. Purchases were wrapped in mauve paper with string. In 1955, their extensive Sussex section contained 400 volumes, including 23 volumes of the Sussex County Magazine (very desirable now), and a 95-volume run of the Sussex Archaeological
Collections priced at £20. Still much missed is Holleyman and Treacher, at 21A-22 Duke Street. Founded after the war, it once boasted the largest antiquarian stock in the southeast, acquiring the library of Leonard and Virginia Woolf, and supplying rare books for major libraries such as the Bodleian. After George Holleyman retired, it was latterly run by David Plumtree and Michael Kadwell (who oversaw the excellent firstfloor music section). Maggie Smith and Denis Healey were among customers. A savage rent increase forced its demise in 1998. I also still mourn Tall Storeys in St James’s Street, which closed in 2001; Brimstones opposite, which moved to Kingston and online trading; and, further down, Borus Snorus. Among alternative bookshops, the psychedelically decorated Unicorn, at 50 Gloucester Road, founded in 1967 by an American, Bill Butler, and described by Greene as “one of the most interesting bookshops in Great
‘The Good Divorce’
Britain”, was busted in 1968 for selling obscene material, but survived until 1974. Another American, Richard Cupidi, in 1973 founded the Public House Bookshop in Little Preston Street, which stocked socialist, Zen, jazz, Native Indian and anarchist material, and was visited by Allen Ginsberg. It closed in 1999. Most memorable was the chaotic emporium of Noel Brookes at 123 Queen’s Road. A former pupil of FR Leavis at Cambridge, Brookes originally had premises opposite, and I recall that by the time you reached the top floor you literally had to tread over books. His new premises began more neatly, but soon the books were again towering perilously overhead and congesting the windows. Florid and stoical, Brookes never sat or indulged in heating (wearing hat, coat, and gloves in winter), and never gave discounts. He could magically pluck any requested item from the labyrinthine disorder. Financial problems led to the collapse of his business in 2002; he died soon afterwards.

As regular readers will know I am a well established Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator. As such I have a rewarding but demanding job for which I had to study and train for several years. It would be fair to say that it is widely accepted that the law and legal processes in general are a complex business so I consider myself to be an educated and intelligent woman most days. Last weekend was the spring equinox – the official start of spring and as such I considered changing all my various time devices only to discover that the clocks don’t actually go forward till this weekend. In talking to friends and colleagues I found that many people made the same mistake. Not to the extent where they actually changed their clocks and watches but they were confused as to which weekend the change occurs. Why is it that despite being
intelligent adults, and the fact that the clocks change every single year so many of us get confused then? Forward or back? This weekend or next? For the record they go forward on Sunday 29th March at 2am, to be precise. So, when you wake up it will be an hour later than you were expecting it to be. So we all get an hour less sleep. Bad news: you’re unlikely to be on time for anything because if you do forget to put your clocks forward, you’ll actually arrive an hour later than you were supposed to. Confused? You’re not alone. But good news some research shows that British Summer Time is beneficial for both physical and psychological health, particularly in terms of relieving the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Moreover most of us are also generally more productive if daylight
hours are extended. The best way I find to try and remember this oh so tricky event is as the Americans say…..’Spring Forward’ or ‘Fall Back’. This could also serve as a aide memoir that I could apply to the work I do with separating couples. Spring after all is a time of growth and renewal. The cycle of life is starting again. Ending a relationship is of course sad and difficult. But it can be a positive transition especially if the legal parting is undertaken with respect for the good relationship you once had. However finishing any romantic relationship is a process not a just an ending. I may not help couples ‘spring’ forward but the work we do together is built on trying not to ‘fall back’ into old patterns of behaviour and ways of relating to each other. And for many couples like this time of year brighter days may be ahead.
I can help you bypass the truly awful adversarial process of the courts at the time of the breakup JO O’SULLIVAN

Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. This week is Dudley.
Factfile: “Dudley is a three-year-old male Beagle. “So far he has lived an outdoor kennel life as a breeding dog, he will need plenty of time and support to settle into indoor home life. “He is a sweet boy who will approach for a gentle fuss but is not used to people handling him, so new relationships with people need to be built up gradually at a pace he can cope with. “Dudley is looking for a calm home where everyone is over 16-years-old.”

People sometimes ask, is pet vaccination really necessary? This may be due to the fear of vaccine side effects, the rare nature of some diseases we vaccinate against, or feeling vaccination is an unnecessary waste of money. Vaccination of pets and animals has helped to reduce the frequency of many serious diseases. Importantly, vaccinating pets against diseases such as leptospirosis protects people. Dogs can carry leptospirosis without being unwell, but can infect humans. We see fewer cases of what we vaccinate for partly because of vaccination and continuing vaccination makes sure the risk stays low. Outbreaks of diseases, which spread between dogs, like parvovirus and distemper, are seen where dogs are not protected by vaccination. Vaccine reactions are very rare - around 0.05%. An independent study performed by the world famous Animal Health Trust could not find statistical evidence that vaccinated dogs suffered more ill health. When reactions occur, they are generally mild, such as a short-
lived temperature. An important benefit of yearly vaccinations in pets is that it allows a regular health check. The vaccination examination often helps identify important unnoticed ailments such as heart disease, dental disease and skin tumors, allowing early treatment. In some cases it may be possible to take blood samples to guide which vaccines are necessary. Vaccinating your pet is really important, but if you have concerns regarding vaccination, please do speak to your vet for more advice. Hannah Capon is a vet at New Priory Vets Brighton

Readers and riders choose new names for a dozen buses Andrew Will @Andew_will91
Last week the Brighton & Hove Bus Company started a crowd sourcing competition to help them decide which 24 memorable figures from the local area deserved to have their name printed on the front of a fleet of Brighton and Hove buses. The public was asked to submit names of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the cities complexion or have had a strong connection with the area during their lifetime. More than 100 names were submitted to the Brighton & Hove Bus Company of whom the company selected 15 and left the remaining nine spaces for you to decide from a shortlist of 31 candidates. The shortlisted names, which include a disproportionate number of men to women, caused controversy as members of the
public pointed to a lack of female candidates to choose from. Jessica Woodfall, a feminist activist and campaigner for the No More Page 3 campaign, said: “Whilst all the men on this list have, undoubtedly, done plenty in their respective fields, how can it be possible that in the last 120 years, only three women have achieved something noteworthy enough to potentially be featured on our local buses?” Desna Tatler, a spokesperson for Brighton & Hove buses responded to criticism, she said: “The bus naming campaign for the 24 new Coaster buses was a public survey so we were limited to the name suggestions that were put forward by the public but we are pleased to say that five of the 15 names selected by the company are prominent females who have made a significant contribution to the area. This is a higher female: male ratio than what was submitted from over a hundred nominations.” The winning names include

The nine names chosen by the public from a shortlist of 31 were Bill Axcell, Zoe Brigden, Brian Cobby, George Holkham, Jamie Janes, Richard Jones, John Nathan-Turner, Alfred Richardson and Eric Slater.

Moulsecoomb woman thanks Freedom Leisure for helping turn her life around One year ago on Mothering Sunday, Louise Constantinou, 52, took an overdose and ended up in intensive care. After years of alcohol abuse and leading what she calls a ‘horrible’ lifestyle, this was Louise’s desperate cry for help. Louise was initially referred to the Oasis women’s counselling centre in Brighton and she found the support there immeasurable. However, she knew she had to dramatically change her lifestyle if she was to regain her health. Louise lives very close to Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre, which is operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council. She usually walked past it one day last June she decided to go in and see if they could help her. “I felt very nervous and thought that if they didn’t make me feel welcome I’d walk out and not return,” says Louise. “I was overweight, very unfit and had lost all confidence. I was worried they wouldn’t like
the look of me or that I didn’t belong there.” Carol Wells was on reception and welcomed her warmly. “Carol was so sweet. We chatted nicely and she suggested that I sign up for a trial period. She made me feel good and I came away feeling positive.” Louise started in the gym but quickly moved on to try the various classes. “They weren’t easy to start with as I had very poor balance, no co-ordination and found it hard to concentrate,” says Louise. “I stuck with it because the instructors were understanding and the other ladies in the classes were kind. I adore the Les Mills programmes and do Body Combat, Body Pump and Body Attack. I also really like Zumba and Spinning® classes. I’m there five days a week now – it’s my new life!” Louise was about three stone overweight as a result of drinking heavily and eating a poor diet. “I used to eat a lot of pasta, chips, pies, pizza
and takeaways: when I was drinking, that sort of food made me feel better so it was a vicious circle.” Once she stopped drinking alcohol Louise was able to think more clearly and make healthier food choices. She cut out pasta and cheese sauces and avoided processed and fried food. She added oily fish, vegetables and pulses to her diet and now grills or stir fries food. The combination of changing her diet, exercising
at Moulsecoomb and giving up alcohol resulted in Louise losing three stone in seven months. She now weighs eight stone and is a dress size six. She is fighting fit, positive and energetic. “Exercise has made the most amazing difference. Not only has it helped me shift weight and get fit, it’s a great stress buster,” says Louise. “I feel I’m among friends with Freedom Leisure and their encouragement enabled me to make a lasting change.”

To help everyone save water we will fix up to three external leaks on customers’ supply pipes free of charge* * provided it is practical for us to do this
What should you do if you suspect there is a leak on your household supply pipe? Step One • Metered households: Turn off all the water in your home including appliances that use water e.g. washing machines. Then locate your meter, which is typically in the public footpath outside your home. If the red meter dial is moving, then it’s possible there is a leak.
• Unmetered households: Check for visible signs of a leak such as water bubbling out of the ground or a very damp patch in your garden on a dry day. Step Two • If you suspect a leak please phone our 24-hour freephone Leakline on: 0800 820 999

Tea experts mix with PM at Downing Street reception The couple behind a growing tea business based in Brighton told the Prime Minister David Cameron about their blend of success at a Downing Street reception this week. Mike Turner and Krisi Smith were invited to No 10 having benefited from the government’s Start Up Loans programme. They were among 20 businesses at the reception, chosen from more than 27,000 businesses up and down the country which have been loaned more than £140 million under the scheme. Their business – the Bluebird Tea Co – has led to the creation of 15 jobs including an apprenticeship. They have a shop in Gardner Street, in the North Laine, they have plans to open a second shop and they are exporting tea abroad through their online store. Mike Turner said: “It was great to visit No 10 and get the opportunity to show the PM our passion for creating amazing blends of tea. He seemed excited

What lurks beneath Is your business prepared for Auto Enrolment? Tickets are now available for one of the South East’s most unusual attractions – the Brighton sewer tours. For more than 50 years, Southern Water has offered visitors from all over the world a unique chance to walk beneath the streets of Brighton, through a network of brick tunnels, to find out what really happens after we flush the toilet. The tours, which run from May to the end of September, are led by experienced guides from Southern Water including Stuart Slark. He said: “The tours, which aren’t available anywhere else in Britain, offer visitors a glimpse into an otherwise unseen
network of tunnels which remove approximately 90 million litres of wastewater each day from the Brighton area.” As well as learning about the history of the sewers, visitors will also discover what items should and shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet. Simon Oates, Southern Water’s Director of Communications and Strategy, said: “Every year in the UK we flush away two billion items that shouldn’t go down the loo. The biggest problem comes from every day items, such as cotton buds, wet wipes and sanitary products as they are non-biodegradable. “The only things that should be flushed down the toilet are the three Ps – pee, poo and paper. Everything else should be put in the bin.” In recent years, a number of unusual objects have been pulled from the Brighton sewers including teddy bears, mobile phones, false teeth and even a severed finger. Tea for two with all-new Mazda2 at Rivervale Mazda Last weekend, customers visiting Rivervale Mazda in Brighton were greeted with an experience that was closer to a country tea room than a car dealership with afternoon tea served to celebrate the launch of Mazda’s new supermini. Typical of Mazda’s ‘defying convention’ manner, the ‘Tea for 2’ event offered customers the unique chance to be one of the first to test drive the all-new Mazda2 supermini while soaking up the Victoria Road dealer’s first class customer service. The all-new Mazda2’s striking styling certainly turned heads, even when competing with sandwiches, cakes and cups of Earl Grey. Once customers were filled with afternoon tea, they were able to get behind the wheel to experience how efficiently the new model sipped its fuel. Commenting on the ‘Tea for 2’ event, Martyn Brown, Dealer Principal at Rivervale Mazda said: “We hosted more than 50 customers for a tea and cakefilled afternoon in our Victoria Road showroom. Everyone was very impressed with the all-new Mazda2, particularly its headturning looks, outstanding fuel economy and our special launch finance deals.” Driving the spirited new supermini on Brighton’s roads, customers were able to appreciate how Mazda’s engineers worked to shave-off

Public relations focusses on your reputation or that of your business. You can offer the most wonderful products or services but if your reputation is on the floor, no-one will buy them. And it’s about how you communicate with all the different sets of people you need to persuade and influence to get on board with your products or services. Tackle PR in a planned and sustained way. That means not doing things in a scattergun way; plan priorities and how to maximise resources. Clearly it’s better to use a skilled, experienced, knowledgeable professional and to build in a PR and marketing budget even as a start-up. But it’s not always an ideal world. If you have little or no budget and want to publicise your new
business or a particular project, there are definitely some low cost ways in which you can do it yourself. Social media Social media isn’t about overt selling, it’s about targeting decision-makers and opinionformers, who can act as brand advocates on your behalf. Free accounts for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other useful channels give instant access to a global audience to publicise what you do. You’re also trying to build up your social network and shape relationships with like-minded people or businesses in a mutually beneficial way through social media. You don’t have to be online all day long though. Dashboards like Hootsuite enable you to schedule messages on multiple social media channels in advance, so you can plan for the day/week/month ahead.

This week's must-see Spamalot Theatre Royal March 30 - April 4 Monty Python’s Spamalot gallops back out on tour, bringing the West End production to Brighton’s Theatre Royal. Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot is a kind-of new musical with a book by Eric Idle and an entirely new score for the new production, (well, almost) created by Eric Idle and John Du Prez. Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, witch burnings (cancelled due to health and safety) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features fantastic tunes more magical than a Camelot convention, including He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song (Reader’s Digest Poll 2010 - before it went bust), Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

The latest tour, which is directed by Christopher Luscombe, follows hot on the heels of the can’tbelieve-how-successful-it-waswith-the-first-show-selling-outin-40-seconds Monty Python Reunion at The O2 and Eric Idle’s acclaimed performance of ‘Always Look On The Bright Side of Life’ at the 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony – the world sang along, and Spamalot audiences get the opportunity to do so too! During the run, there have been 21 onstage moustache incidents, three suspected cases of swine flu (French pigs!), three outbreaks of nits and 92 pairs of coconuts. Recipe of the Week by Wade Moss
A cornucopia of delicious, ethical chocolate treats Suzanne Rose @placesieatbtn
The daffodils are in bloom, the seagulls have resumed their dawn chorus and I’m thoroughly fed up of spring hayfever. This can only mean one thing: Easter is coming. And by that I obviously mean: it’s chocolate time! I’m not booking a dentist appointment just yet, though. Chocolate – the right kind – is exceptionally good for us, as Heather and Paul Smith, owners of North Laine café Chocaffinitea, are keen to prove. On their travels around the southern hemisphere a few years ago, they discovered single origin chocolate and artisanal bean-to-bar production, while in Australia they fell for the popular Aussie culture of the chocolate café. “Our minds were blown by the chocolate we tasted out there,” says Heather. “There were chocolate shops and cafés everywhere, and we returned home obsessed with the idea of opening our own, and to change the common perception that chocolate is bad for us.” And what a lovely spot their café is. A narrow exterior belies a bright, fresh two-storey interior, part café/part shop, where the music is great and you can enjoy Monmouth coffee, loose-leaf tea, sandwiches (bread is supplied by Silo), salads and raw chocolate desserts homemade by Heather.
For those in need of a full-whack sugar fix, brownies by Mr Bake are always available, or just pop in for beautifully packaged, thoughtfully sourced chocolate bars, hot chocolate kits, chocolate eggs and chocolate-covered coffee beans and cacao nibs. It’s the perfect place to pick up some seriously good-looking Easter treats. While travelling, the couple became interested in the raw food movement. “I began reading blogs and experimenting with recipes, making my own dairy and sugar-free desserts,” says Heather. “I couldn’t believe how great they tasted, plus they were actually good for me! It was such a brilliant, radical concept. You get this sweet treat, but without a massive lull afterwards.” Heather’s eye-catching, everchanging display of homemade desserts may include Madagascantopped salted peanut caramel (a bestseller), raw chocolate brownies, triple chocolate cashew slices or antioxidant-packed chocolate truffles. Heather’s key lime pie is sweet, creamy and zesty - it’s hard to believe it contains no dairy or sugar at all. “The vegan element of a lot of our food is a tricky one,” says Paul. “It can be off-putting to some they’re wary of ‘that funny-looking vegan food’ - so we don’t want to pigeon-hole ourselves by shouting about how vegan-friendly we are. But by not mentioning it, we might be missing out on a lot of vegan

Big Sussex Market returns to New Road
The Big Sussex Market, a celebration of all things food and drink in the county, returns to New Road, Brighton on Good Friday 3 and Easter Saturday 4 April. Part of the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival’s Easter Weekender – a prelude to the extensive Spring Harvest food festival line-up running 21-31 May – the market features over 50 local growers, producers and restaurateurs all based within the city and county. Producers will include Blackman Bees, Bolney Wine Estate, Sussex Gold, Hove Place, Boho Gelato, myhotel, Whiting & Hammond, and Coggings & Co. “All of our major outdoor events, including the Big Sussex Market on Easter weekend and our huge seafront Sussex & The World Weekend on Hove Lawns on 30-31 May, are free entry for everyone to enjoy both good and local food and drink”, said festival director Nick Mosley. customers. Basically, we love when people come in for a cappuccino, order a dessert without realising it’s raw or vegan, and say how much they enjoyed it!” Chocaffinitea’s hot chocolate has definitely become one of their main draws: made with organic 70% Madagascan chocolate and a blend of spices – no sugar, no milk - it’s the most delicious pick-me-up. They’re planning to launch a white hot chocolate this Easter too, plus chocolate sharing platters. Next time you’re in town, give this place a try. Coffee Chronicles by
An African Palm Civet is an omnivorous animal native to the forests of East Africa. Bear with us, it'll become relevant shortly. Civets are kind of like cats. We said shortly, not instantly. They are solitary and nocturnal and they eat rodents, insects, bats, birds and fruit. Hang on in there, it's coming now. One of the fruits consumed by these rather cute little creatures is the berries from the coffee plant. Ta dah - relevant now isn't it. In Sumatra, the name for these feline fellows is Luwak, and the Indonesian word for coffee is Kopi. We are therefore about to go on an adventure into the world of Kopi Luwak. Our adventure begins in the digestive tract of a civet. Yes, really. It is here that the fermentation of the bean
200g pork fillet 1 potato
2 apples 1 tbs of balsamic
Vinegar
1 small tomato 1 small red onion
1 small green pepper
Seasoning 1 clove of garlic 1 sprig of rosemary
Method ■ Roll fillet with cling film until it is tight. ■ Peel the potato and cut into small rounded shapes with a cutter. ■ Pan fry until golden-brown and cook in oven for 15 minutes, with the
garlic and rosemary. ■ Brunoise the pepper, onion, and tomato, and mix all together. ■ Seal the pork in a pan for about 2 minutes on a high heat until
coloured, then put into oven for 16 minutes. Once out, oven roll in the vinegar and cut to size. ■ For the apple compote, boil in water until soft, then season and blend until smooth. ■ Finish with a nice garnish of fresh herbs for colour, and plate the dish.
Wade Moss is demi chef de partie at Hilton Brighton Metropole occurs. Enzymes from our furry friend's insides seep into the bean which makes for shorter peptides and more amino acids. The bean then passes through the intestines before being defecated. The civet defecates in order to mark it's territory. We humans then collect their faeces and consume the beans within. The logic behind this disgusting and disturbing degustation of defecation is that the civet selects only the nicest beans to eat and the digestion process apparently improves the flavour profile of the bean. The latter point is very much in dispute and the former is not necessarily true anymore. The Kopi Luwak available in all disreputable shops today is no longer cultivated by following a civet around and waiting for it to produce the goods. Civets are now kept on farms in conditions similar to battery chickens. They are force-fed which is not only gross but also knocks out the whole "only the nicest bean" nonsense. Kopi Luwak is one of the
most expensive coffees in the world. It can sell for around 700 US dollars a kilo. As there is very little legal enforcement regarding the Kopi Luwak name, there are plenty of fake feline faeces coffees around and it's pretty difficult to prove the provenance or lack of it. Within the coffee industry, Kopi Luwak is seen as a gimmicky, novelty crock of faeces. The taste of a bean relies too heavily on the type of bean, grade of roast, processing method and brewing style for it to really matter whether your coffee has already been eaten by a cat. Kopi Luwak is not something we've tried and it's not something we ever intend to try. If you do find yourself hankering after those tasty morsels of ingested and digested Felix, please go right ahead. If you fancy a proper coffee, step away from the litter tray - it probably is As Good As It Looks. Find The Little Coffee Company at 4 Bartholomews, BN1 1HG

@BrightonIndy
the city is our office Bonett’s
A marriage made in heaven or…? It’s a funny thing, the client – estate agent relationship. It usually starts with lots of promises, all lovey-dovey, then the client reads the small print of the contract and discovers they’ve signed a 26 week sole agency agreement with no optout or the agent realises that this great flat with a long lease owned by one person, is in fact owned by two people, one of whom does not want to sell, and the lease has 65 years to run…oops! Getting off the starting blocks on the right foot can be difficult as the agent tries desperately to please the owner in every way: probably, as a result, overpromising on price, time to sell, quality of buyers, market activity and so on. The seller may not have done their homework on the likely price, current market forces, or thought through sufficiently what their plans are and so just concurs with it all. An example of a typical scenario is the one where the seller has found the ‘perfect property’ to buy and needs to sell in a hurry. Unfortunately, their target property is right at the top of their budget and they need £X from the sale of their own property to buy, when their property will actually sell
for £X minus £50,000…not a good place to start! But the agent wants the property on their books, so say they can get the price needed. Difficult. Our view and one borne out by results, is that you must want to sell because you need to sell. Then, you put your place on the market at give or take the right price (property valuation is not a science…so many factors to consider), agree a sale at £X and cut your buying cloth accordingly. With such sales, you rarely get ‘fall throughs’ as the seller is committed, has the property on at the right price and is focused on actually moving rather than just being on the market. Then, conversations with the agent are positive ones about how to help each other to make it happen. Although the client is in charge as of course, after all you pay the bill, if the agent does not sell the subject property, he is working for nothing…not a good place to be. As such, it is crucial that agent and seller communicate and support one another to do their best. Get the price right, get the right kind of people to come and look, not just pile a whole bunch through the door, wearing out your carpets only to discover they were all actually
looking for a detached house with garage and garden when you are selling a vertical terrace with a patio! Those post-viewing conversations are very important to hone who later comes through the door. When the buyer is there, the conversations and emails with the solicitors to ensure the sale is moving forward, are critical too. Good agents have good relationships with solicitors as they do not waste the solicitor’s time with spurious calls and insufficient information. Over the years, one of our big bugbears is the agent along the sales chain from us telling us ‘not to worry, it’s all going fine’, when in fact they have no clue what is going on with their sale as the do not communicate meaningfully…sales founder so often due to lack of transparency in chains…don’t be a victim of this! As usual, it all comes down to trust and communication. Get that right at the start and who knows, in the not too distant future, you will be handing over the keys! Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. The French Apartments, Brighton £425,000
Sackville Road, Hove £950,000
Immaculate and well presented ground floor apartment with two double bedrooms, forming part of this historic Grade 2 listed period building, which is surprisingly secluded. You will find well planned living accommodation, a wealth of built in storage, a private patio, well kept communal gardens and off road parking.
Beautiful semi-detached period house with bay windows and a lovely decorative front gable, constructed from the light coloured brick that characterises the buildings in this part of Hove. Currently used as offices but with loads of the original features intact, some imagination is required to visualise the lovely family home that this has the potential to be. Business unaffected.
Old Steine, Brighton £250,000
Grand Parade, Brighton £149,950
Top floor flat in a period building with the Royal Pavilion as a neighbour and great views across the Steine Gardens! The apartment has two bedrooms, a light and bright living room with an open aspect and a separate kitchen. Recently redecorated throughout and with share of freehold and no chain, this would be an ideal first time buy or buy to let.
One bedroom lower ground floor flat with its own entrance and a private patio. The flat is in a great location being walking distance from the seafront and Brighton station and close to the vibrant North Laines quarter with a wealth of independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. In need of improvement to reach its full potential, this would be a great opportunity for someone looking for a project.
VALUATIONS: Would you like to know what your property is worth today? Please call and arrange an appointment for one of our very experienced valuers to come to your property and give you our best advice.

Bradley Stratton @BradStrat With this week’s international fixtures giving Albion their first extended break from play since Chris Hughton took over at the Amex, it offers a chance to reflect on how things have changed since he took charge. The former Norwich City and Newcastle United manager stated when he arrived that his initial challenge was to work on getting the club away from the danger of relegation, and it’s fair to say that with seven games to go in the Championship this season, he has all but achieved that. When Hughton pitched up

at the club on New Year’s Eve, Albion were level on points with Millwall, who occupied the last spot in the drop zone. Fastforward three months and a ten-point gap has been built up between his side and the bottom three. There are a number of factors to take into account when you look at the turnaround in form since the 56-year-old became manager. Under Sami Hyypia the side looked tactically naïve and struggled to break down opponents in front of goal, with Albion only winning three league games in the Finn’s time in charge. Hughton’s managerial experience at this level has
the season at the Sussex track is the three day August Festival from 5-7, with the John Smith's Brighton Mile being the feature race. Last year the honours went the way of the Andrew Balding trained Mime Dance in a thrilling finish when just edging out the Scott Dixon trained Piceno. Ladies day is once again the middle of the three days racing on Thursday, August 6. Champion jockey Richard
counted for a lot since he took over, and he’s got the side playing in a way that has produced goals, whilst also making sure they are able to defend leads at the other end. Players such as Chris O’Grady, Inigo Calderon and – prior to his season-ending injury – Sam Baldock have found new leases of life going forward, whilst the addition of Beram Kayal in the January transfer window has also significantly boosted the quality in the midfield. Overall, Hughton has brought confidence back to the Albion support, and whilst his work is not yet done for the current campaign, things look to be going in the right direction with him at the helm.
Hughes led the way once again in 2014 with a total of 15 winners from his 46 rides. This summer will be the last opportunity we get to see him in action at Brighton before he retires from the saddle to take up training next year. John Bridger and Richard Hannon shared the spoils on the leading trainer’s table with 9 winners a piece last summer and more can be expected again this time around. Other highlights of the year

The Albion Roar @albionroar Alan Wares
With a much needed three points, courtesy of a classic, flying bullet header, rarely seen since Sky invented football in 1992, the Albion are well on course for a club record-breaking fifth consecutive season in the second tier of English football. Chewing over the win, while the club takes a two-week break, will be Roar debutants Andy
Stonestreet and Mike Wilson, from the North West Sussex Seagulls. While we’re grateful that we don’t have a webcam in the Reverb studio, Andy will be familiar to many as a man who walks slowly to great funky 1970s music. Come and get your love. Visit www.radioreverb.com and hit the donate button. Do this while the Roar is live and we may even play a tune for you. No One Direction – guaranteed
A fan's view Ben Belcher

Albion face the final four games of the season
since early January! Moreover, it was just about deserved. Albion looked in control in the first half and, although Blackburn came back stronger after the break in search of an equaliser, they were held at bay thanks to an organised Albion defence and one particularly fine save by Stockdale, as well as the tireless Chris O’Grady providing an outlet for the Albion to ensure that Rovers’ defence remained occupied for the full 90 minutes.
As I write, football fans are protesting against ticket prices in the Premier League as the top flight clubs convene for the first time following the bumper £5 billion TV deal from 2016. Peter Scudamore may well have negotiated well on behalf of his employers but the issue won’t go away. And it’s away prices that are one of the main debating points. This is, of course, the Premier League where the price of 50 notes is not uncommon for a Category A game. This week one fan tweeted about the cost of over £30 for a ticket for Albion’s final game at Middlesbrough, 500 miles away, for a 12.15 kick off. Ouch. The push continues for
a larger share of the pot to go to League clubs and grassroots football. On a local level I believe the Albion should be commended for the work it does to hold prices and make football accessible to as many as possible. We all go through different stages in life and the early 20s is in my view a key age group to keep engaged in the game. There is pretty much football on TV, albeit not on free-toair, every night of the week and if we fail to make fixtures attractive at all levels then the temptation to stay on the sofa will surely become too strong for many. Due to work and the high prices I now rarely see Premier

As the international weekend approaches many of us will seek out a non-league game where we’ll hang over a railing and burn our mouths on a Bovril. Let’s hope some of the £5bn trickles down to those clubs to improve pitches and facilities, and we can still go home happy at 5pm without a hole in our pocket.
Are we doing enough to bring good English players through? Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion FA chairman Greg Dyke believes the most effective way for more English players to grace the country’s top flight is by enforcing stricter restrictions on foreign imports. His England Commission’s target is a 40% home-grown Premier League by the 2022 World Cup in a sweltering desert, sorry, Qatar. Just 35% of this season’s crop originate from these shores – with Burnley pushing up the figure with their predominantly English squad – highlighting the magnitude of the problem, especially compared to the rest of Europe where the Bundesliga is a healthy 60% German. Dyke argues that far too many imports are of insufficient quality, blocking chances for our starlets to emerge. The prolific Harry Kane – now top scorer in the Premier League –
is on fire but has only featured regularly since November after fairly inauspicious loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City over four years. Foreign owners and investors, foreign managers, a plethora of mediocre talent and exorbitant ticket prices are further pushing the average fan away from their clubs. How can someone who has lived their entire life thousands of miles away just waltz in and suddenly understand the history, idiosyncrasies and traditions of a football club? Vincent Tan switched Cardiff’s colours from blue to red – absolute sacrilege – by proclaiming it was lucky in his home country of Malaysia. But Cardiff is in Wales, Vincent. Football is awash with cash. Youngsters are much less likely to break through at their parent clubs due to many factors, not least the pressure of staying in the top flight. Are as many kids
playing football these days, or even adults? Video games and the sheer amount of alternative activities available has resulted in grassroots struggling, with despondent coaches frustrated with appalling facilities, dwindling numbers and nowhere enough support – financially or otherwise – from the top of the game. A few seasons ago Withdean regularly witnessed up to eight Sussex lads in first-team action. The crowd loved it and you could see how much it meant to the players, some of whom were blue and white to the core. They gave their all, and that’s all you can ask. Of course, to have this scenario now is a fanciful notion and the only realistic option is a combination of home-grown, experience and, undoubtedly, many different nationalities. Is it too late to enforce the necessary changes to save our national team?
