Labour engineer Twitter storm after 'poisonous' abuse claim
Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy It's a sunny Sunday in a quiet suburban road. It's early evening, 6pm or thereabouts, and Richard Savage is walking down the road, towards his home. He is cheered to see the "Reelect Caroline Lucas" posters in so many of the windows in a relatively-prosperous neighbourhood in Preston Park ward. Then he sees the small group of Labour Party apparatchiks tramping the streets, doorto-door, the sort who tweet about their heroics on
Julie Cattell (@cooljool80), 24,000 tweets
#LabourDoorstep. Mr Savage - an unassuming secondary-school teacher, an Oxford-educated ex-professional cricketer - cannot help himself. He is exasperated by the bile that has spewed for so long
from a tiny minority of Labour candidates and supporters. If his wife had been there, perhaps he would have restrained himself. (Note: his wife is Ms Lucas, seeking re-election on May 7.) His words are disputed. The volume with which he delivered them are also disputed. Sussex Police, however, insist they did not receive a complaint - despite what the rumour-mill implied. Mr Savage has told friends he definitely did not shout; he has insisted he was not abusive; nor he did call the four Labour activists - Julie Cattell, Warren >> Continued on page 20
Last week, Caroline Lucas's celebrity supporter was Dr Brian May, lead guitarist of Queen. This week, it is Dick Knight, life president of Brighton and Hove Albion and a freeman of the city. Mr Knight, who described himself as "always left-of-centre", said Ms Lucas was a "brave, principled, and intelligent" politician who deserved to be re-elected as Green MP for Brighton Pavilion. He rebutted suggestions that he shuold not support a Green candidate because of the party's opposition to the American Express Community Stadium at Falmer.

They're off! Season starts at Brighton Racecourse
The sun shone on the crowds at Brighton Racecourse, as the new racing season began on Tuesday. TIM HODGES, of Brighton and Hove News (www. brightonandhovenews, org) took the opportunity to look back at 10 things you may not know about this remarkable sporting venue. 1 Frankie Dettori rode at Brighton two days after his "magnificent seven" at Ascot in September 1996. With no Sunday racing, it was his first appearance since his brilliant feat. 2 The Queen owned the horse that won the Brighton Challenge Mile in 1992, Talent (USA). Alas, Her Majesty was not on hand to receive the trophy. 3 AP McCoy came in 2002 to win on Ian Balding’s Thundergod in a six-furlong dash for jump jockeys.
4 Brighton is the only course in the UK to abandon racing due to a sea fret, in 2002. 5 Brighton Racecourse has only once held races on a Saturday in the past 30 years - an evening meeting on Saturday, August 16 1997.
8 Brighton held a prestigious Derby Trial in the 1950s and 1960s. The course is almost identical to the shape and undulations of Epsom.
6 The course has only ever had one race featured live on terrestrial television. Kilcullen Lad could be seen winning the Victor Chandler Dash on Wednesday, August 18 1999 live on Channel 4.
9 A colourful character called Ras Prince Monolulu (real name Peter Mackay) sold tips outside the course in the 1940s. The tipster had a striking appearance, wearing colourful robes and shouting “I gotta horse”.
7 Alamo City at odds of 6-100 (around 1/16) was the shortestpriced loser in England for 49 years after losing at Brighton in 1966 - until Triple Dip was beaten into second at Lingfield last month at 1/20
10 In the 1990s, a horse dumped his jockey, broke free of the course, and caused mayhem in Elm Grove before eventually being caught in Lewes Road. It was declared a non-runner.
School appeals after planners reject new classrooms project Brighton College has lodged an appeal after its plans to put up a £6.5 million classroom block were turned down by Brighton and Hove City Council. Officials recommended granting approval for the scheme - part of a bigger ten-year master plan for the expanding public school – but the council’s Planning Committee voted against the proposal. The appeal will be heard by a government-appointed independent planning inspector who will weigh up the arguments for and against the scheme at an informal hearing. It is expected to take place later this year or early next year
and follows an appeal by Sussex University after part of its master plan was rejected against official advice. The Brighton College plans involve demolishing the old swimming pool and music school buildings and replacing them with a five-storey classroom block. The new building would be linked to the Grade II listed Great Hall and the Skidelsky building. As part of the scheme an elm tree would be felled and replaced with other elms elsewhere on the school’s campus. The loss of the elm was the reason for refusing permission

for the new classroom block. Among those to question the proposal to fell the elm – and to vote against the Brighton College scheme – was Councillor Alex Phillips. Her husband and fellow Green candidate in the local elections Tom Druitt campaigned beforehand to preserve the tree. When a council committee previously agreed a revamp of the Seven Dials, Councillor Phillips was one of those who voted for the scheme which involved felling an old elm. Mr Druitt then camped out in the tree to save it - successfully. This time, he only blogged about the threatened elm before the planning committee meeting.

Case collapses The case against a protester accused of racially harassing a Jewish woman collapsed after last-minute video evidence showed his Nazi jibe was shouted at a crowd, not just her. Palestinian Yasser Samman, 64, who now lives in Brighton, was arrested on 17 May last year in Western Road at a demonstration outside Ecostream, whose parent company SodaStream has a factory in the contested Gaza territory. Mr Samman was accused by a counter protester of calling her a "f***ing Nazi". But the video showed he did not single her out and the case was dismissed.

Our city shows its style Parenting
Time Waits For No Mum
A succession of 15 models - wearing outfits from 12 city shops - were the stars of the third Brighton Thistle Fashion Show at the Thistle Hotel on Saturday (April 18) Guy Lloyd from Juice 107.2 and Sophie Corbett hosted three shows, with Jonno Cox and Rich sorting the sound and music. Jane Busby, the Brighton & Hove Independent columnist, styled and staged the shows. More than 300 people came to see the spring and summer outfits. Shops that appeared on the catwalk were Eyesite Opticians, Four Candles, Get Cutie, Jacu, Laundry Boutique, MatchBags, Mistral, Pretty Eccentric, Rock Lobster Boutique, Simon Carter Menswear, Tegen Accessories, and The Fair Shop.
They say that sharing is caring. But, in the last few weeks and months, I’ve been struggling to get to grips with it. Not my own sharing that is I’m reasonably okay with that passing the biscuits round and only being mildly peeved when people avail themselves of my generous offer. No, it’s sharing for toddlers that is nagging away at me. There seems to be an unwritten assumption built into parenting that states that your child must share all things at all costs. Toys, books, friends, games, is nothing sacred? First off, Tibbons has a toy that is closer to his heart than anything else he’s ever owned (literally, as she’s carted around with him at all times, to all places). So I’m clear that she is not for sharing and I think that’s okay. Other toys, I encourage Tibbons to share with friends coming round to play and mostly I think he does quite well. But it’s difficult for young ones,

so how far do you go in enforcing the sharing rule? At other people's houses, I’m probably prone to thinking they don’t go far enough and at our house I probably adopt a similar approach, but feel bad for Tibbons if he finds it tough. You see, I feel like I’m displaying contradictory behavior: at friends’ houses, trying to convince him that it’s okay for a child not to want to share their toys with him and then at our house doing the exact opposite and trying to convince him that, actually, sharing is great and should be done routinely, with the minimum of fuss. If there’s a happy medium, I’m yet to find it. Ideally, I’d like to let him share on his terms, but given how widespread the unwritten parenting assumption about sharing is, I’m not sure we’d have many more playdate invitations. And how about those “helpful” types who try to make your child share? What’s to be done about them?

Fire
Save water, energy and money this summer With temperatures higher than average for this time of year, people will be eager to spend more time in the garden. Before turning on the sprinkler, however, Southern Water is kindly reminding customers to use water wisely. This year, it will finish its fiveyear programme to install nearly 500,000 water meters across Sussex, Kent and Hampshire. The introduction of meters means that households will now pay for each unit of water they use. The water company has a few simple tips to help customers save water, energy and money in the garden this summer, and throughout the year. These include: ■ Use a watering can instead of a garden hose or sprinkler as this is more accurate and therefore uses less water; Catch rainwater in a water butt; ■ If you have potted plants, add some water crystals - which will soak up the water and release it slowly over time; ■ Use paddling pool water to feed the plants; ■ Water plants early in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler, because less water is
Council office fire A faulty solar panel has been blamed for setting fire to the roof of Hove Town Hall. A huge plume of thick black smoke billowing from the roof of the council offices in Norton Road could be seen for miles around. The building was evacuated while the blaze was put out and council workers were allowed back inside within a couple of hours. The council is now checking solar panels on all its buildings.

“Saving water is not only important for our environment, but it also helps customers save money on their bills. To date, 60% of metered households are saving, on average, £13.50 a month. “Customers should visit our website at www.southernwater. co.uk for water saving tips, videos and discount vouchers.”
Southern Water has been involved in developing a certificate in water conservation e-learning course for professional gardeners and landscapers.

by Emily Bullock I have a confession to make. Please don’t hate me. I really, really dislike sport. All sport. I don’t watch Wimbledon and I have no idea about football, rugby or golf. And yet...I do quite often watch boxing. Not those tiny teeny lightweight boxers, but the great big heavyweights who dance around the ring landing heavy blows that make me wince. (I was also quite addicted to Thai boxing in Bangkok, going twice a week to Lumpini stadium getting caught up in the betting frenzy). You can imagine how thrilled I was to get this book. Jack Munday has been fighting all
his life. His earliest memories are shaped by the thrill of the boxing ring, but he’s grown numb. He’s now a grafting boxing manager. His hopes and ambitions seem realised when he meets a talented young fighter, Frank, and a new girl, Georgie, who inspires him. Jack is hungry for change and we follow his path with bated breath. The fights, the smells, and the thrills of boxing are very real in this book and the gritty, punchy prose is in keeping with postwar London. I found myself desperately hoping that Frank wins every

My Pledges to you: Conservative Common sense for Brighton Pavilion. A city of presperity, progress and pride. 1) The return of a beautiful central Brighton and seafront
Dear Resident, With the 2015 General Election now just weeks away, I am writing as your Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Pavilion - the most vibrant, diverse, tolerant and economically important coastal seat in the UK - to set out how our wonderful city can live up to its true potential once again under the next Conservative government. Already our successful long term economic plan is restoring the UK’s public finances and bringing huge benefits to Brighton in the process. As the strong, effective, entirely Brightonfocused voice in Parliament that the city now so urgently needs, I will play my part in securing that prosperity further. Nationally, we are on course to halve the deficit, unemployment is at a record low, employment at a record high and more than 71,000 families have been helped onto the property ladder – over 80% of them first-time buyers. We are keeping inflation low, reducing taxes, reforming welfare and securing the future of the NHS with an extra £3bn. Locally, within Brighton Pavilion, our fiscally responsible policies have delivered a huge 56% drop in unemployment and more than 2300 apprenticeships for the city’s young people since 2010 . As your MP, I would want to see more affordable homes being built, better protection for the city’s many tenants, support for businesses and developers who have the confidence to invest in Brighton’s exciting future and greater help for the most vulnerable and needy on our streets. As a resident of the city, I am also only too well aware of the challenges facing us on Brighton & Hove City Council: The failure of the Greens to deliver basic core services such as rubbish and recycling collection, their ideological “anti car” policies that strangle the local economy, an apparent tolerance of unauthorised traveller encampments and the obvious deterioration of our cityscape. For all this, they seek, with Labour’s support, substantial council tax rises. With Ed Miliband in 10 Downing Street our national recovery would be jeopardised as a firmly left-wing Labour government would once again bring the country to its knees through instinctively high taxes, high spending and yet more borrowing. My vision for our fantastic city is therefore simple: I want to see Brighton consign the Green experiment to history. No longer should Brighton be known as the city of protest, but, rather, it should become the city of prosperity, progress and pride. Conservative common sense change has to come to Brighton and soon: with your vote supporting me on May 7th it will.
Our world famous seafront should be world class once again. The city’s parks and gardens, too, must once more be beautiful. We will take swift and firm action against increasing unauthorised traveller encampments. Brighton will look it’s best once again under the Conservatives.
2) A reliable refuse and recycling service
The Greens have failed to deliver even the most basic council services, the efficient and timely collection of your rubbish and recycling. Brighton has become nothing short of a mess while industrial disputes with union leaders drag on. By transforming Cityclean into an employee led and owned mutal organisation like John Lewis, the Conservatives would ensure an efficient rubbish and recycling service is restored as a priority.
3) An end to rip-off parking charges
The city’s motorists have suffered from sky-high parking charges, strangling local businesses and the wider economy. The BHCC parking charge surplus for 2013/14 was £18.1 million. Brighton will become a popular shopping and leisure destination once again through us ending the great parking rip-off and bringing in realistic, reasonable and imaginative parking schemes, not least a 10% cut in the price of residents’, traders’ and business parking permits and a 4 year freeze on all parking charges.
4) A great place to do business and create jobs
We will support business and the city’s entrepreneurs by encouraging them to suceed and create jobs and apprenticeships. The Conservatives will carry out a long overdue overhaul of the BHCC Planning Department, freezing developers from bureaucratic delays.
5) Your Council Tax will not go up under a Conservative administration
The Greens have sought huge council tax rises for failing to deliver your core council services. Labour, too, have sustained the Greens in office by often voting with them or abstaining, whilst also pushing for council tax rises each year. The return of Conservative control to Brighton & Hove City Council will mean better, more efficient services and no increase in your Council Tax.
Kind Regards
Clarence Mitchell Securing a better future for Britain REDUCING THE DEFICIT
The Conservatives are reducing the deficit to secure a stronger economy and a better future for Brighton and for Britain. By taking difficult decisions we’ve halved the deficit since 2010. We’re safeguarding our economy for the long term so future generations aren’t left to clear up the mess. Dealing with the deficit is essential to keep mortgage rates low for hardworking families - helping them become more financially secure.
MAKING WORK PAY, CUTTING INCOME TAX AND FREEZING FUEL DUTY
We’re cutting income tax for over 25 million people, saving the typical taxpayer at least £705 a year. We’re taking the lowest paid out of income tax altogether by rasing the tax-free allowance from £10,500 to £12,500 by 2020. We’ve cancelled Labour’s planned fuel duty rises, helping small business and saving you £11 every time you fill up your car.
THE NHS REMAINS SAFE IN CONSERVATIVE HANDS
The future of the NHS will be safeguarded with an extra £3bn being put into the frontline health services and GP funding. We’re committed to providing an extra 5,000 doctors by 2020, with GP surgeries being allowed to open 7 days a week. The Conservatives are restoring the traditional family GP in a modern, reformed NHS.
SUPPORTING HOME OWNERSHIP
Help to buy has been a huge success helping 71,000 people nationally into new homes - with over 80% of them first-time buyers. 31 families have been helped onto the housing ladder in Brighton Pavilion. We will go further, 100,000 new Starter Homes will be built and sold to first time buyers at 20% discount. More affordable homes and better tenant protection will be my priorities. Selfishly, the Greens want to take away the right to buy your own home if you are a council tenant denying thousands of hardworking people the opportunity to get a start on the property ladder.
OUR PLAN FOR CONTROLLED IMMIGRATION
The British people want controlled immigration - and that’s what the Conservatives will deliver. Successive governments have lacked control over immigration and people are understandably frustrated. That’s why we plan to remove financial incentives that attact migrants to Britain, with changes to welfare an absolute requirement in the UK’s renegotiated relationship with the EU.

There are days when clouds seem the most ethereal entities on earth
Graham Chainey
I lay on the floor the other day, watching the evening clouds drift sedately in from the sea. Their undersides were pink or rosy, their upper parts grey or green, their shapes etiolated and fantastic. Below in the streets, people milled busily about, traffic streamed, yet up above, unregarded, all was calm, transcendent. With what stealthy gradations the clouds transform themselves from shape to shape, from tint to tint. Some stay stationary, as if gazing down at us with incredulity; others skate urgently along. Apparently, a Cloud Appreciation Society exists. And, apparently again, there are 10 genera of clouds, divided into 26 species and 31 varieties. (Luke Howard in 1803 first established the categories of cumulus, cirrus and nimbus.) It seems there is nothing on earth (or just above it) that scientists cannot categorise, quantify, and define. But as I lay watching the clouds, the last thing I wanted was to stick Latin names on them. I just wanted to merge with the great shifting spectacle, to let my imagination drift with these giant babyish apparitions. There are days when it is worth watching the clouds, days when
it is not. There are days when they seem the most ethereal entities on earth, strayed from some world of dream, and days when they are just cloudmass, oppressive occluders of the light. In Aristophanes’s play “The Clouds”, someone asks: “In looking at the sky, have you never seen a cloud resemble a centaur, a leopard, a wolf or a bull?” Shakespeare’s Antony, before his suicide, compares himself to the evanescent clouds, noting “sometimes we see a cloud that’s dragonish, a vapour something like a bear or lion, a towered citadel, a pendent rock.” Ralph Waldo Emerson speaks of “the ultimate art gallery above”. Rupert Brooke in his sonnet “Clouds” speaks of their “noiseless tumult” and “wise majestic melancholy train”. John Constable liked to sketch clouds. The mystical painter Cecil Collins claimed “looking at a cloud will heal me very often of melancholy”. Richard Jefferies, lying on Brighton beach in 1884, notes: “I was always fond of watching clouds. In my pocket-book I have several notes about these peculiar sea-clouds. The value of these clouds lies in their slowness of movement and consequent effect in soothing the mind.” But no-one, I think, matches Gerard Manley Hopkins, in his notebooks and poems, for elaborate descriptions of

clouds. “Eastward after sunset range of clouds rising in bulky heads moulded softly in tufts or bunches of snow,” he records in May 1866, while a student at Oxford. In July he sees “multitudinous up-and-down crispy sparkling chains with pearly shadows up to the edges”. By sunset, these have become “level clouds naturally leadcoloured but the upper parts ruddled, some more, some less, rosy. Spits or beams braided or built in with pellet flakes made their way. Through such clouds anvil-shaped pink ones and upblown fleece-of-wool flat-topped dangerous-looking pieces.” In 1868, standing on a Swiss glacier, he notes “prismatic colours in the clouds,” which are “fine shapeless skins of fretted make, full of eyebrows or like linings of curled leaves”. In 1871 he sees clouds “stepping one behind the other, their edges tossed with bright ravelling, as if white napkins were thrown up in the sun but not quite at the same moment”. In “Hurrahing in Harvest” (1877) he exclaims: “What lovely behaviour of silk-sack clouds! Has wilder, wilful-wavier mealdrift moulded ever and melted across skies?” In another poem he has: “Cloud-puffball, torn tufts, tossed pillows flaunt forth, then chevy on an air-built thoroughfare: heaven-roisterers, in gay-gangs they throng; they glitter in marches.” Excerpts from the recently-published book

1998 | Friday, April 24 Albion general manager Nick Rowe appealed for local business people to help the club during a meeting at the Grand Hotel. Director Martin Perry said the club was confident it would get permission to play temporarily at Withdean Stadium and that a new ground elsewhere would be the envy of towns and cities throughout the country.

Poll watch In Rottingdean Coastal, it should be a shoe-in for the two Conservative candidates. Which means we should see Joe Miller on the council - a young voice, with a lot to contribute. In Wish, Anne Pissaridou has been a force for good as a councillor, true to her beliefs and not afraid of letting others - even party colleagues - know what they are. More power to her elbow. Robert Nemeth is an intelligent and experienced candidate, but there remains a question mark over whether he can convince voters on the doorstep. Edward Crask must have a chance of making this a Labour gain.

Poll watch Woodingdean is an interesting ward: a significant working-class population, but two Conservative councillors with sizeable majorities. It's difficult to see anything changing - without a seismic shift nationally. Which, in the circumstances, looks very unlikely. As a councillor, Steve Bell is a strong personality who will not go unnoticed.

Capitalist democracy at its worst as Miliband seems determined to lose Tony Greenstein @TonyGreenstein
The only moments in the current election that have produced any excitement or interest have been the debates between the party leaders. It was the one moment that the party campaign
managers couldn’t finely control. What has been remarkable about this election is how the major party leaders have avoided contact with the general public. They have been determined to avoid Gordon Brown’s Gillian Duffy moment when Brown described a voter as a "bigot". Time was when Harold Wilson relished putting down hecklers.
Today a heckler wouldn’t get within a mile of Cameron, Clegg or Miliband. During the debates, the three anti-austerity candidates Leanne Wood, of Plaid Cymru; Natalie Bennett, of the Green Party; and Nicola Sturgeon of the SNP - wiped the floor with the leaders of the establishment parties. By the end, a sizeable

Brighton Hippodrome is mothballed as its future still remains uncertain Steel door covers and fences are being put up around the Brighton Hippodrome to protect it from squatters as its future remains uncertain. The former theatre, which once played host to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Laurel and Hardy, was due to be converted into a cinema, shops and restaurants. The proposal won planning permission from Brighton and Hove City Council despite a campaign to reopen it for live performances. But when one of the partners, Vue, pulled out the scheme was put on ice. Now, leaseholder Live Nation is applying for part-retrospective permission to install higher security at the site after having started to install it late last year. The application, written by chartered surveyors Michael Jackson Consulting, said: “The reason behind these security measures are because of people attempting to gain access to the building, presumably to squat, as it is empty and seen as an easy target. “The installations would consist of a perimeter anti-climb fence
on top of an existing 7ft wall, similar anti-climb fences on top of low-level entrances preventing access to the roof levels, a 3m tall Betafence with gate to the rear of the Palm Tree Court area of the building further preventing access to the high-level roof areas, and another Betafence to the side of the rear car park separating an entrance to a nearby unrelated office. “As well as these fences, steel covers are to be installed over the doors and low level windows on the Middle Street elevation both internally and externally to prevent further break-ins.” Paul Zenon, of the Save Our Hippodrome, campaign said: “Before the fences went up recently, they’d had round-theclock security with dog patrols since Christmas time. Having a manned patrol is very expensive. “There’s a safety issue with the ceiling and if squatters get injured it would be their responsibility insurance-wise. “The worrying thing is that, with this planning application, it sounds like they just want to fall apart until it’s too late to do anything with it.”
Plans to transform the Hippodrome into a multiplex cinema provoked protests (Photograph: Philippa Hammond)

Inflatable obstacle fun at Prince Regent Swimming Complex

The human rights pressure group placed 200 body bags on the beach in rows in front of the Brighton Wheel to highlight its new report. They were placed next to a banner displaying the hashtag #DontLetThemDrown and a giant life ring and a wreath of funeral flowers was placed among the body bags.

Old Boat relaunch Labour's vile Twitter storm > Continued from page 1
The remarkable resurgence of Old Boat Corner Community Centre took another leap forward with a family fun day on Saturday. Nearly 1,000 people attended the fun day at the centre, which faced closure only a few months ago. Since then, an influx of volunteers - and support from Geoffrey Theobald, the Conservative councillor, and Caroline Lucas, the Green MP - has resulted in a much brighter future. About £1,550 was raised - including a £550 contribution from Lloyd's Bank. Needless to say, more fundraising events are already being planned; the first one will be an evening of disco, karaoke, and barbecue. Our top photograph shows some of the many volunteers behind the relaunch: Carly Gunn, Donna Nerantzidis, Helen Clarke, Helen Lawrence, and Liz Clift (with her daughter, Josie).
Morgan, Neil Schofield, and Frances Bill - "poisonous". For the record, he did accuse `Labour of "spreading poison" about his wife on social media. He was right. He asked why Labour was targeting “the best MP” in the country. A provocative question, but - in the circumstances understandable. So why is this news? Because of what happened next. Immediately after the incident, Labour activists deliberately engineered a Twitter storm, exaggerating what had happened and self-righteously using social media to take the moral high ground (see right). At the heart of Brighton and Hove Labour Party, there is a tiny minority of serial Tweeters, always ready to shower personal abuse as part of the pretence of political discourse. Not even fellow party members are exempt. One said: “There are a handful of people who are cowards, who hide behind the keyboard – but will never confront you in debate.” Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal that Ms Cattell - who is known by the Twitter handle of
‘The Good Divorce’
"@CoolJool80" (aka JC4PP) - is one of them. Even as she asks voters in this marginal ward to support her as a Labour candidate. Even as one of her closest colleagues - a fellow council candidate describes her as "insufferable". Ms Cattell lives two roads away from Mr Savage and Ms Lucas. A planning expert, with unhidden ambitions to be a member Brighton and Hove's planning committee, she has been responsible for more than 24,000 tweets. (How on earth does she find the time?) Many of her tweets are vitriolic; many are aimed at Green Party supporters. She is little-known by the general public; she rarely engages in political debate in public meetings. Still she wants your vote. We would have asked her for a comment, via Twitter. But she has “blocked” @BrightonIndy. To look at the modestly-built, quietly-spoken Mr Savage, it is difficult to think how he could intimidate Mr Morgan, a political heavyweight, who claims he has been called a “baby murder” in the council chamber. (Journalists who regularly report meetings of the council have no memory of hearing such alleged abuse.) A footnote: Neil Schofield (@SZeitblom) - a former Green
Party activist who is standing for Labour in Preston Park – did not join in the Twitter storm. He was, Mr Savage has told friends, “perfectly civilised” during the Sunday-evening discussion. So where does all this nonsense leave us? Labour - it seems - now wants to move on, put all this behind it. Of course it does. After polluting the well of city politics for longer than is decent. Indeed, it is time to move on. From the twittery, to democracy. On Thursday, May 7. For more tweets, visit: www. brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk

I can help you bypass the truly awful adversarial process of the courts at the time of the breakup
Regular readers of this newspaper will know that in addition to writing for the Sussex Independent I have a lively website which features videos and my blog (not as much blogging going on as I’d like though!). I am planning to write about social media and online friendships, which can be problematic when a couple is going through a separation. It has got me thinking about friendships and divorce in more general terms. As a Collaborative Lawyer and also a Family Mediator I often remind my clients divorce is a process, a transition, not a one off event. It will bring relationship changes beyond the couple relationship. The transition will change several aspects of your life. One of these areas will be relationships, particularly close friendships. It can be a time to re evaluate friendships; ask do they still work? Friends that have stood by you through good and bad times may not be as supportive as you need them to be, may be too judgemental. But when someone is truly a friend they’ll stick around. If not, then you may find they’re not someone you need in your life anymore. Divorce has a way getting rid of these dying friendships but does allow for new growth which brings with it new friendships.
Sad as it is people whom you might have thought close, may choose to side with your ex. Don’t fight this ….grieve for the loss but then move forward. Others who seem less close to you may surprise you and become really good friends. When you separate often other divorced or single acquaintances become good friends. Shared experiences can mean they offer more understanding and validation that you don’t get from married friends. Often it is not intentional that friends distance themselves it is because they do not want to get involved or don’t know what to say or how to help. Mutual friends may not know what to do for the best. My advice to clients is yes do be pleasant when you bump into them, but maybe don’t suggest meeting up if they seem a bit awkward. At least for a while if things are raw. Most importantly remember any relationship should be a two-way thing. If maintaining a friendship makes you feel drained then something isn’t right. You need to be kind to yourself through a separation so avoid those so-called friends who seem to suck the life out of you or make you feel judged. Relationships romantic and platonic
are not static nor should they be. They will change regardless of situations. So value those friends that stay in your life and you’ll find you will go on to make new ones in more serendipitous ways.

The chief executive of the Sussex Beacon has spoken about his concerns that parliamentary candidates are signing a pledge on the NHS that places hospices and health charities at risk. Simon Dowe said that if politicians honoured the pledge then they would effectively be nationalising the services provided by the Beacon. He was speaking yesterday as Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt visited the charity’s Brighton base. Mr Hunt praised the Sussex Beacon and said: “The success of this place was that it wasn’t dreamt up by a minister in Whitehall. I want to work more with voluntary organisations and I’m worried that some candidates in other parties take a very different line.” Mr Dowe said: “The inference within the pledge is that they would nationalise the NHS.
As a third sector organisation, that would exclude us from that funding. It would directly endanger our future. “It would be a huge loss to the community in Brighton. The service that we provide is crucial to the community and probably couldn’t be provided by the NHS. The only way I can see a future for the NHS is through working in partnership with the voluntary sector.” Simon Kirby, who is hoping to be re-elected as the MP for Brighton Kemptown, said: “People at places like the Beacon, the Martlets and Macmillan nurses must be worried by candidates who have signed the pledge. “They all work hard to deliver brilliant care and they all have a part to play in delivering health services and we don’t want that put at risk. You can’t put ideology before the delivery of services.” Among the parliamentary
As a modern parent, I’ve learned you have two main responsibilities: to ensure your child’s physical and emotional wellbeing as best you can and to look after their personal child health record - the revered “red book” - with a similar level of care. Of the two, you might think the former would be the more challenging prospect. But two-and-a-half years into my parenting journey, I feel far happier and more secure about Tibbons’s wellbeing than that of his red book. Which again, you may not think is a big problem. But you’d be wrong. Let me level with you. I’ve lost it. The book, I mean. I don’t know
how, I don’t know when, but it’s gone. And I don’t think it’s coming back. Unfortunately for me, the red book seems to have been designed to separate the parenting wheat from the parenting chaff. Will you be the type to guard its pages closely, to nurture the book’s development as you do your own child’s? To watch its pages fill and grow with a glow of pride, happy in the knowledge that, at any time, your child can discover how much they weighed at five days, or confirm that they had their first vaccinations on January 17, not January 18 as your faulty memory would testify.
candidates to have signed the NHS pledge are all three Greens in Brighton and Hove – Caroline Lucas, Davy Jones and Christopher Hawtree – and two of the three Labour candidates – Nancy Platts and Purna Sen. Peter Kyle, who is standing for Labour in Hove, has refused to sign the pledge and explained his reasons at a hustings organised by Sussex Defend the NHS. He said: “I agree with a lot of what’s in the pledge but I’m a champion of local and national charities. I can’t sign a pledge that says it will bring all voluntary sector work in-house.” While visiting the Sussex Beacon, which offers specialist care and support for men, women and families affected by HIV, Mr Hunt also said: “I’m proud of our record working with the gay community. We introduced gay marriage despite a lot of opposition.”
significant inroads are being made by charities, voluntary organisations, social enterprises and mutual, etc. In the report, we make a distinction between charities and voluntary organisations that historically have run crucial community-based services in cooperation with the NHS.We outline the benefits of these arrangements (and) those charitable and voluntary organisations who have adopted the corporate staffing and financial structures and business strategies of the private sector and are going into direct competition with NHS providers and private healthcare companies in tendering processes for NHS services. To suggest we have set out to undermine charities and voluntary organisations with any involvement with the NHS reflects a serious misunderstanding of the issues and our position.

Or, are you - like me - giving the red book short shrift and earmarking yourself as a lackadaisical parent at best, or a downright slovenly one at worst? If you’re keeping me company in this latter group, be warned: you will be found out. When you least suspect it, you’ll receive a call informing you that it’s time for another “routine development review”. And then, oh-so-casually, just as you’re about to hang up the phone, you’ll be politely but firmly reminded that you’ll need to bring your child’s red book with you (no mention of the child, strangely). Then you’ll know you’ve been rumbled.
I was disappointed to see Brighton & Hove Independent (page 6, April 17) perpetuating, without question, Conservative claims that Sussex Defend the NHS and political candidates who have signed their pledge in some way places at risk partnerships with the voluntary sector. It doesn’t. The pledge states: “I am committed to a universal National Health Service, free at the point of delivery, publicly funded and provided, and which delivers a publicly accountable, quality caring service.” Let me make myself absolutely
clear: my support for the independence of healthcare charities, and my admiration for the Sussex Beacon’s work, in particular, could not be stronger. By signing the pledge, I was endorsing its true purpose: to ensure that large corporates such as Bupa and Virgin do not use charities in a Trojan-Horse-style grasp for more of the NHS cake. I want to see people’s health care put before shareholder profits. Nancy Platts, Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown

Every Picture Tells: 50 ye Brighton Photography, the new seafront gallery in the West Pier Arches, is making its Brighton Festival debut this year by hosting a retrospective of Roger Bamber’s 50-year career, spanning the golden age of photojournalism. From Saturday, May 2, the gallery will show how Mr Bamber’s work progressed from the 1960s - he joined the Daily Mail as a 20-year-old in 1965 - through five decades of covering everything from wars and rock and pop, to arts and culture, all over the world for every major national newspaper. His unique work covers a wide range, from tabloid years with The Sun in the crazy 1970s and early1980s, to a remarkable body of work taken for The Guardian and The Observer in years that followed, which reflect a very different perspective. But whatever the subject, Bamber’s work is characterised by his distinctive graphic style, wry humour, and boundless originality. His punchy pictures have always made people look twice and won him many accolades and awards. The "Every Picture Tells" retrospective, which runs until June 14, explores the backstory of each photograph, revealing the wit, persistence and compassion of the man behind the camera. Business Your networking system Julia Chanteray @JuliaChanteray
I am running a two-hour workshop on advanced networking skills for Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce on Thursday (April 30). If you are in the city and can come along, I would heartily recommend it. It’s only £35 (£45 for non-members), so you can’t go wrong. Here are the highlights: 1 Think of networking as a system, not an activity. The workshop is about how to get your networking systems to work for you. 2 Get out there and meet people. It doesn’t work if you don’t show up. 3 Meeting people is only the first step. Below are the other steps. 4 Follow-up. Send the people you meet an email to say hello and a LinkedIn invitation. Always unless they were really awful. 5 Almost every one you meet networking will be useful to you in some way. Often the people you meet who are not going to be clients (which is most of them) are the most useful.
They are the ones who will know your potential clients, or have an interesting story you can tell your potential clients, or will have something you can buy from them. So dismiss no-one, unless their values are so far from yours that you never want to see them again. 6 Get people to engage with you. You might have something in your “hello” email which invites them to sign up to your email newsletter, book to buy something from you, or download a free trial. You might ask them a question so they have to reply back to you. 7 Follow up again. Follow them on Twitter and respond to something they said. Or email them when that event comes up again and ask them if they are going this time. Or send them something useful, funny, or relevant to them. 8 Follow up over and over again. That’s why it’s a networking system.
9 If you’re just starting out, and don’t have a lot of contacts yet, do this manually and put lots of love and care into it. If you’ve already got more than a few hundred contacts, you need to automate this. Julia Chanteray runs the Joy of Business and has helped hundreds of companies in Brighton to grow. She has grown her own business through a mixture of networking and online marketing. To book a place at the workshop on April 30, visit: www.businessinbrighton.org.uk
Danger scaffolding lands firm with a £1,000 bill
A scaffolding business has been fined for exposing drivers and pedestrians to danger in a Brighton street. The owners of Unlimited Scaffolding Ltd put up an unlicensed and unsecured scaffold in St George’s Terrace, in Kemptown, earlier this year. Len Batten, prosecuting on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council, told Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court that a member of staff spotted the scaffolding on Thursday 26 February. Mr Batten said that a council highway enforcement officer noticed that the scaffold was not displaying a licence and, in his opinion, posed a danger to pedestrians and drivers. The scaffolding was free
standing and not tied into any building or marked with highvisibility tape or any padding. Scaffolding poles were at an angle across the pavement and could not easily be seen by pedestrians. The company failed to respond to the officer’s request to make the scaffolding safe. As a result the council instructed another company to remove the structure. The company, based in Wednesbury, in the West Midlands, and run by Gerard Mcguigan, 37, pleaded guilty by post. The case was dealt with by Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday (17 April). The court fined Unlimited Scaffolding £400 and ordered it to pay £860 costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

Places I eat
An authentic pizzeria with a heart and soul Suzanne Rose @placesieatbtn
Pan-fried sea bass, mango salsa, dauphinoise potato, and lemon spinach Ingredients
If you had to choose the most unlikely location in Lewes for a great restaurant, the room over the bus station probably wouldn’t even cross your mind. Yet this is where you’ll find the Hearth Pizzeria. It’s underwhelming from the outside and would be easy to pass without a second glance. But look closer and you’ll spot the Hearth Bakehouse at ground level, where the quality of the freshly-baked bread indicates that the pizza upstairs may actually be the real deal. The pizzeria itself is a large, airy room straight out of the 1970s, and not in a contrived way. Not much has been added to smarten up what was once a greasy spoon above a bus station, and I love that: scuffed lino floor, lacquered tables, vintage jukebox, green pendant lights and mustard-yellow tiles on the walls. I’ve been to Italy a number of times and the best pizzas I ate were in rough-and-ready places like this. Pizza is street food, after all, not restaurant food. The chef expertly handstretches dough and paddles pizzas into the roaring wood-fired oven, leaving them for little over a minute to bubble up and char, and the heady aroma of wood and bread hits you the moment you walk in. It’s brilliant. The menu includes 8”/12” pizzas and a couple of calzones (£6.25£9.95), plus a few pasta dishes, cicchetti (small side dishes) and puds. The pizza is the star of the show, though, made from dough that ferments for more than 20 hours before baking. It arrives at your table straight from the oven, as it should do, with a crisp base that’s just thin enough without being flimsy, and a chewy, light crust, dotted with huge air bubbles and beautifully spotted with charring - perfect for scooping up a portion of homemade meatballs in tomato sauce. The Holy Grail - tomato, basil and buffalo mozzarella - is gorgeous in its simplicity, although it’s worth noting that the milkiness of this cheese can
■ One sea bass fillet
■ Two jacket potatoes
■ Quarter ripped mango
■ Two cloves of garlic
■ Quarter red pepper
■ 100ml double cream
■ Quarter tomato
■ One handful of washed spinach
■ One tbsp of parsley
■ Half a lemon
■ Quarter red onion
■ Salt, pepper, olive oil
Method Pan fry the sea bass both sides and rest in a tray; place the tray in the oven at 170C for about six minutes; Peel the mango and cut into cubes, cut the red peppers, the tomato, and red onion - all in cubes; mix with the parsley, a tablespoon of olive oil, a drop of lemon juice, salt, and pepper; Peel the jacket potatoes; cut into fine slices place in one tray; simmer the double cream with the garlic, salt, and pepper; boil and add the double cream to the potatoes. Place the tray in the oven at 160C for about one hour and 20 minutes. When cooked, place another tray of the same size on the top and some heavy tins on the top to press and place in the fridge. When get could cut a portion and reheat for about 15 min with 170C. Add the spinach and some lemon juice, salt, and pepper in the saucepan on a low heat and cook until soft. Put all ingredients on the plate and serve. Pizzas are made from dough that ferments for more than 20 hours
dampen the base a little. The Napoletana, another holy trinity of anchovies, olives and capers, delivers little hits of salty goodness and completely cured my five-star hangover on a recent visit. The Dalai Lama - “make me one with everything” - is your wild-card option, where the chef decides what toppings you’ll get. The Pizza al Metro appears very popular with families: half a metre of pizza for £15.95. There are veggie choices a-plenty and even dairy-free cashew cheese, should that be your thing. The Hearth has hosted a few pop-ups, featuring Kate Henry, of Great British Bake-Off fame, and esteemed baker Dan Lepard. On my last visit, I got chatting to the owner, artisan baker Michael Hanson, who wants to hold a mod night here this summer - the place already has an authentically retro feel and I can totally picture Lambrettas lined up outside. Count me in for that one! I’ve been to the Hearth with a friend for a pre-pub crawl carbfest; I’ve been with my husband and two small kids. I always leave happy. If you ever needed an excuse to get out of Brighton, give them a try. Read more by Suzanne Rose and the Places I Eat Brighton team, at: www.placesieatbrighton.com
Coffee Chronicles by
Entrepreneurial engineers envisioned the easy extraction of espresso. They embarked on an enterprising expedition to encounter equal esteem, exaltation, and encomium for their efforts - ergo encouraging the eclipse of every early entity eagerly endeavouring to emerge entolled. To put that a trifle more simply - and a lot less alliteratively - we are about to discover how the espresso machine made it from one man's patiently-pending patent to every other man's principal prized possession. (We almost made it.) Flash forward 17 years after Angelo Moriondo patented his bulk-brewing espresso machine and you stumble into a pair of Italians. It's not the Super Mario brothers, it's not Beppe and Gianni Di Marco, and it's not the lads from Donnatello's. Luigi (still not a Super Mario brother) Bezzerra and Desidero Pavoni are the subject of this week's historical jaunt. In 1901, Bezzerra made amendments to the original espresso machine design and patented each improvement under
Ricardo Pires Viana is demi chef de partie at Hilton Brighton Metropole
the official title of "innovations in the machinery to prepare and immediately serve coffee beverage". Bezzerra then did us all a favour and sold his patents to Pavoni. In 1905, in possession of all the necessary patents to infiltrate the espresso machine market and obliterate the competition, Pavoni founded La Pavoni and began industrially producing his machines. La Pavoni consisted of a small workshop in Milan where the machines were handmade at a rate of one a day. The urbanisation of Italy created a whole new market of coffee consumers; espresso bars provided new places and new ways to socialise. The first espresso machine bar in Italy was called Ideale and they were the proud owners of a La Pavoni. There was a rather handy bylaw that stated that if the signores and signoras drank their espresso standing up, then the coffee prices would be controlled by the local government. This is where the Italian "stand at bar" culture came from. While they were busy perfecting the art of propping up the bar and looking effortlessly cool, we Brits were busy constructing complicated queuing systems akin to those at Thorpe Park. We also used this time to master the well-
timed and awkwardly-audible tut when someone doesn't possess the requisite skill of queuing. Some time since then, we learned to complain. Badly, embarrassingly, and in an utterly tactless fashion. La Pavoni has been heavily involved in the research and development of new design, products, sales, and after-sales of espresso machines from 1905 right up to and including today. La Pavoni machines for domestic use are available from the world's most prestigious retailers for a price similar to that of a terrace house in Luton. The prices of the La Pavoni commercial machines are even more scary. Forget Luton, think mortgage in St Albans. Tickets to museums are far more affordable. So, to check out the charm and history of La Pavoni, head to the Museum of Modern Art in New York where they've curated the lever model. If the airfare to America is an issue, we suggest Google images. Or your imagination. Intellectual individuals instantly identify that imagination is indispensable, important, and indeed imperative, if inexhaustible and innumerable income is inaccessible. Innit. Pretty Good Thinking I’m packing for my first visit to Italy. I overcame considerable temptation to buy "for the holiday" by reminding myself how much more interesting it will be to find things on the visit. Apparently, the market for natural and organic personal care in Italy is one of the biggest in Europe. Naturalmente is a line of innovative products created in 2004 by Artec, an Italian company. By choice, Artec use pure essential oils and fragrances derived from the botanical plants, flowers, roots, seeds, oils, fruit, spices, and resins. Naturalmente ingredients are sourced from their countries of origin, then cultivated and harvested using organic, biodynamic and spontaneous agricultural methods. Bioart also produce Essere, an eco-friendly range that ensures biodegradability in cosmetics. My eyes will be peeled. British high streets carry plenty of miniature products to fly with, but I prefer to decant my regular favourites.
Go natural for your holiday abroad. Essentials include Bioart's ecofriendly product range Essere, and Naturalmente's haircare products which make use of pure essential oils and fragrances
Superdrug sells an excellent range of small bottles. I also found three flip-top minis and a little screwtop container with handy labelling stickers and a cute little funnel in a bag for £1 at Primark. They are great for short trips - but using plastic and flying are far from sustainable lifestyle choices. So I don’t do either very often. PLA (polyactic acid) is becoming popular because corn-based plastic is a more environmentallyfriendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. PLA is a biodegradable replacement. For more information, visit: www. cdrbeautywellnessnature.com. I also decanted rose geranium water through used-up essential oil bottles to shake into a refreshing
spray. This is a random process because you cannot determine how the flavours will blend until you try. If it isn’t right at first, add more of your preferred oils until it harmonises. I love having a unique fragrance to freshen up with - and its good to spritz around when everyone overheats. I grab all my sample sachets and rinse out old make-up brushes so that I have a selection of clean ones to enjoy while i am away. Making a capsule toiletries bag is never easy, particularly with sun care in the mix. I’m sure to smile a lot so will carry my trusty Aveda Lip Saver and Nourish-mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze in fire poppy, a dynamic shiny summery orange somewhere between the colour of Aperol and Campari. Salute!

Jimmy’s: The ideal place to eat your way all around the world Andrew Will @Andrew_will91 Jimmy’s, one of the highestprofile additions to Brighton Marina, is one of the largest restaurants in the city – with places for up to 500 people. Serving food from India, Thailand, China, Mexico, and Italy, it is fun destination for families and children. We were warmly welcomed at the door by a smartly-dressed man who took us straight to our seats in a restaurant notable for décor that is easy on the eye: maroon walls, hanging lights, wooden floors and tables, and plenty of booths to relax in. The vibe is warm, homely, and social. By 7pm, the vast venue was alive with the buzzing chatter of diners. After our drink orders were taken, we were ready to begin. Naturally, as seasoned buffet specialists, we arrived with a game plan.
We had decided to start off small to ensure we could manage to get a taste of everything; the idea then was to increase the amount on our plates only towards the end of the meal. Our plan failed miserably, of course, as we both returned to our seats with a mountain of Indian food. The butter chicken was the stand-out dish - creamy, mild, succulent, and definitely moreish. The sides were also tasty; I managed to tear into five onion bhajis. The sauce supplements were also good, with the chili pickle adding a welcome kick to the dish. Next, we migrated to southeast Asia to tackle Thai cuisine. I went for a pork dish, a beef curry, and a traditional Thai green curry, trying my best to prevent them all merging into
a single dish. The beef curry was delicious, the meat was tender and the sauce was aromatic. The green curry hit the spot, as you would expect, but the pork was a little too fatty for my taste. At the grill station, the burger meat was, by comparison, bland and the range of toppings and sauces limited. Perhaps a bit of bacon would have helped - or at least some onions and a gherkin. Similarly, the steak would have benefited with more supplements; a peppercorn
sauce would not have gone amiss. The Mexican station was uplifting, especially the selection of beef and chicken fillings and toppings - including jalapeños, cheese sauce, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, and fresh salad. Also on offer was a bowl of interestinglooking squid-ink tortilla chips. (Although more colourful, they taste pretty much the same as traditional tortillas.) Having travelled across the world in less than an hour, I was struggling for breath and had unbuckled my belt. Dessert awaited, including the siren call of the chocolate fondue fountain. For children, I imagine the chocolate fondue is the pièce de résistance of the Jimmy’s experience. I have to admit I too was excited. I took my stick, placed my marshmallows upon it, and
coated them in chocolate sauce. As I lunged into it, I felt like I was 10 years’ old again. It was indulgent and fun – and, among the surrounding toddlers, I could see what all the hype was about. Overall, Jimmy’s was a very rewarding experience. Elsewhere, I have found buffets that try to embrace such a breadth of cuisine have compromised on taste. Not here. With a few tweaks, this recentlyopened restaurant will be a fantastic experience that is a perfect fit for the marina. The service was superb throughout and the atmosphere was friendly and social. In particular, it is a great place for families to get together for a fun meal or a birthday bash - and also for couples and friends to get a quick bite before going to the cinema. I didn’t manage to get through all 100 dishes, but I welcome you to try and beat my effort. I’m sure you will enjoy it.

What could happen if you do not protect your tenant’s deposit? As part of a series of articles offering advice and news for local landlords, Ahmed Khalil of Khalil Properties explores the consequences of failing to comply with Tenancy Deposit Scheme requirements. Here’s some old news It’s nothing new so there’s no excuse: Tenancy Deposit Schemes have been a legal requirement since the Housing Act of 2004, and only the most unobservant landlords can claim ignorance. Yet it’s still easy to forget: you have 30 days to protect your tenant’s deposit in an approved scheme and notify them that this has been done, yet it can still be so easy to miss deadlines. Here’s an elephant trap One potential elephant trap is that the clock starts ticking from the date you receive the deposit, not the date the tenancy commences. Make sure you plug this date into your online calendar and set a few email reminders to be triggered. Here’s a problem So you haven’t protected your tenant’s deposit in a timely manner? Let’s look at what this could mean. 1.Your hands are now tied. You cannot now legally repossess
your property where there is ‘no fault’ at the end of the tenancy using a Section 21 notice (Notice of Possession). This means there will be a lot more hoops to jump through and hurdles to overcome. 2. You could lose the deposit. Your tenant may make an application to the Court to seek a return of the deposit. If you are at fault this is most likely to be granted, leaving you with no security against damage or unpaid rents. 3.You could be left out of pocket. The Court can actually instruct you to pay the tenant treble the deposit amount as a sanction against your failure to comply. Here are some workarounds The truth is there simply is no excuse for not complying and you have laid yourself open for prosecution and, perhaps, a fine. There are three possible workarounds open to you. First, you can return the deposit to your tenant. Be honest: tell them you have made a mistake and return their deposit in full. Of course, you are left without a security deposit but you can now serve a valid section 21 notice should you need to.
Second, you could simply take what’s coming. If your tenant has made a claim you can just see it through, take the hit and, once the Court has made its decision, you can once again serve that notice legally. Finally, you can ask your tenant to surrender the tenancy, return their deposit and start a new agreement with them all over again. You never know, some folks are very obliging! Here’s to letting without fretting The simplest way to avoid any of this is to not let it happen in the first place. Tie a knot in your hanky, set up an email reminder or, better still, avoid all the hassles of tenants and lettings, but still make money from your properties, by chatting to me about our Rent Guarantee Scheme. It gives you guaranteed rent and a guarantee of never having to personally deal with all this trouble ever again. Now that’s letting without the fretting. For more information about local renting conditions, or to discuss current rental opportunities, call Ahmed Khalil on 01273 573960, visit Khalil Properties at 124 Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 3LG or find us online at www.khalilproperties.co.uk.

the city is our office Bonett’s
Property – an investment or a home? We live in an age where property is often thought of first as an investment and only second, as a roof over our heads. Only this morning, listening to ‘Today’ on Radio 4, I was not surprised to hear an agent say that a buyer, acting for a foreign investor, turned up at a new flat development in London, and bought something like 10 flats in one go! How do ordinary mortals compete with that? They can’t… it’s as simple as that. But what could be done to level the playing field somewhat? Unfortunately, nearly all the solutions put forward by the property industry: builders, developers, lenders, estate agents, mortgage advisors rely on keeping prices high but ‘helping’ buyers to buy with different kinds of offset finance. Help to Buy, part-ownership, 100% mortgages, lending deposits to buyers, and the latest offer is to sell off the last of the local authority housing/council houses and flats, currently mainly rented through Housing Associations at affordable rents, to their tenants and a big discount. This is likely to lead to many of these joining the
buy to let market and thereby further reducing the number of properties in the ‘property churn’. The ‘property churn’ explained: In any one year, ‘x’ number of properties come onto the market for sale. If a whole chunk of these are bought over the years by a variety of investors: the offplan new build, multi-flat foreign investor; the ‘Right to Buy’-ers who buy the property they have been renting, then sell it on to a private sector landlord to rent out and take the profit; the ‘Buy-to-Let’ investor who sees property as a pension fund… these are a few of the scenarios which over time have massively depleted the volume of properties in the property churn. There is so much less property in the annual churn compared to years ago so the prices have shot up… it’s not rocket science. As there is so much less, prices are out of reach for first time buyers. Are the suggestions on offer, shared ownership and so on a solution? In the end, you have to pay. Much like student loans; cheap at first but soon, the repayment cost goes up and it is very hard to pay it off. The
problem being that, as we still do not build enough, rental prices will continue to rise, especially if Housing Association affordable rents become a thing of the past. Does any political party have the cojones to grab the nettle and deal with this or are soar-away property prices a long-term good thing? Listening on the radio to an old dear in Shepherd’s Bush, talking about the family trying to stay in the same community together with soaring sale and rental costs, one might think not.
Legislation: what form could it take? I’ve written before about affordable mortgages (no such thing if it’s offset all the time against a future larger repayment), and about buy to let mortgages favouring wealthier people. The long term solution would be a re-balancing of the property market. It would need to settle at a level where there was some relationship between average wages and cost of rental or purchase. With the freeing of the mortgage market to allow
lending at the levels seen now, this is never going to happen. We are currently in a ‘bind’. But what could we do to change this in a way which would not destroy pension aspirations and so on? Suggestions please…printable ones! Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A. Paulbonett@bonetts.co.uk Twitter: @bonettpa

With their place in the Championship for next season as good as secured, Albion can take to the field tomorrow afternoon (12.15pm, Saturday) at the Amex against Watford knowing they don’t have to rely on getting a good result for their survival. Defeat at Blackburn for Millwall on Tuesday night means that, at most, the Lions, who occupy the last spot in the relegation zone, can only finish level on points with the Albion. However, Chris Hughton’s side’s much superior goal difference – 24 higher than Millwall’s – means they are

effectively safe. Albion’s boss will no doubt share the fan’s relief at having ensured second-tier status in English football for the 2015/16 campaign, but he will also want to see his players continue to put in 100% effort for the last two games. Albion are set to play a pivotal role in proceedings at the other end of the table, with their remaining fixtures coming up against two of the divisions current top-three sides. League leaders Watford could make a return to the top flight for the first time since 2007 with a win over Albion. However, with the game kicking off earlier than others in the division they will

be forced to wait on other results before any celebrations can begin. It may also be the final chance for Albion fans to cheer on some of their players at home, with the futures of Craig Mackail-Smith and Inigo Calderon still unclear. The latter was crowned Player of the Season at the annual awards dinner earlier this week, with the Basque native’s commitment and passion for the club no doubt playing a large part in the voting from fans. Calderon has become something of a cult figure during his five years at the club, and whatever the result he will no doubt get a rousing reception from the Albion faithful on Saturday.

The Albion Roar Alan Wares @albionroar As the football season judders to a halt with all the style, flair and panache of a Brighton-toLondon rush-hour commuter train at another set of broken points just outside Three Bridges, Ady and Al are already looking forward to summer at the County Ground, Hove lazing with beer, sandwiches, beer, sun hats and beer. Before the season closes,
however, Ady will need scraping off the ceiling as – assuming we can get him off the golf course – his all-time favourite Albion player, former Northern Ireland winger Steve Penney, will be dropping by the Radio Reverb rabbit hutch for an unintelligible natter. Tune into Radio Reverb, 97.2FM, online at www.radioreverb.com, or via the podcast on iTunes and www.albionroar.co.uk. The show is brought to you in association with www.oldfootballshirts.com

I was contacted this week by one of my former colleagues, and a man I respect very highly. A true wordsmith and a keen Watford fan, he asked me to contribute to a preview of this weekend’s game for When Saturday Comes. He reminded me of one of my first ever jobs. And the class of 92. He wasn’t referring to Giggs, Scholes, Beckham et al, but was casting an eye back on our days at Thames Television. What’s this got to do with the Albion you may ask? Well, as 95-odd staff learnt by fax they had lost the London weekday franchise and would inevitably lose their jobs,
life moved very fast. After a far-from-brief trip to the pub, things in the coming months could have disintegrated but with strong leadership from people such as Nick Milligan, who sadly died in an accident last year, success was ensured until the final day. The key to success is manifold, but a focused leader and a driven workforce fuelled with belief and hard work can pay dividends. Experience is key, and, as I learnt in one day, and in the years since, all you take for granted can be swept from under you in the blink of an eye. As the season draws to a close
Follow all the action, home or away, on BBC Sussex Sport or Twitter @BBCSussexSport @johnnycburger @BHIndyAlbion the hard work begins. It has been a disappointing campaign for Albion fans in some regards but there is much for them to admire at the club. Nick believed in the power of collective will. Across sport, in football and in life there are countless examples when the sum of the parts can outshine individual quality. Put the two together and who knows what can be achieved. Thanks, David, for your timely reminder.
End-of-season drama: The story 34 years ago Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion Blackburn Rovers’ victory over Millwall has kept the Albion in the Championship for a recordbreaking fifth consecutive season. Let’s be honest, though; a relegation battle brings excitement – something that has been distinctly lacking for the majority of this turgid campaign. Things were very different towards the end of 1980/81. Albion had been flirting with the drop zone from early November and the natives were getting restless. Three straight defeats in seven days – including two FA Cup matches – to Manchester United at the turn of the year did nothing to boost morale. A consistent 19th place was maintained for three months and Alan Mullery’s men were on the verge of waving goodbye to the old First Division after just
two seasons. With four games remaining – two at home, two away – stripeless Albion were three points from safety. It was the last season of two points for a win, and eight were available… The first fixture was with our friends from south London. It’s hard to believe, but Selhurst Park was even more of a tip in the early 1980s. A disappointing crowd of 18,792 watched on helplessly as Gordon Smith, and John Gregory (2), destroyed the ‘team of the eighties’ 3-0 in their own backyard. Next up were Leicester City at the Goldstone. Gary Lineker couldn’t do anything to stop Albion winning 2-1 with Gregory, recently moved from right-back to midfield, again finding the target, alongside Michael Robinson. The new Prince Regent swimming pool opened in the week of the penultimate game; a daunting trip to relegation threatened Sunderland who
were two points, and places, above their guests. Robinson’s instinctive tap-in the 35th minute was met by an eerie silence. There were less than a coachload’s worth of Albion fans in attendance! The Mackems equalised before left-back Gary Williams stunned the famous Fulwell End with a perfect volley in the last minute! Just under 28,000 fans crammed in the Goldstone to see if the winning streak would continue for the final game against Leeds United. All Albion could do was get the two points, and then wait to see how their rivals had fared; Wolves had two games in hand. Makeshift striker Steve Foster settled the nerves before parading some silky skills to set up Andy Ritchie to secure the points with ten minutes left. Wolves finished safe but Norwich City and Leicester went down – with Palace. A textbook end to the season! They can’t all be like that.

wELCOME TO BRIGHTON FRINGE 2015 It is the biggest and best arts festival in the country, with a mission to stimulate, educate, and entertain. Every year, it fulfils that mission, and more - much to the delight of everyone in Brighton and Hove, and to the countless people it helps attract to the city. Importantly, Brighton Fringe showcases an astonishing and diverse range of artists and performers. Many of them are established; others are learning their craft and cherish an unparalleled opportunity to display their talents at nearly 200 venues. Everybody concerned - on stage, behind the scenes, or in the audiences, large and small - deserve our gratitude. Together, they create - in the words of Julian Caddy, the festival's managing director - "something as unique as it is transient". For our part, Brighton & Hove Independent is delighted to do everything it can to support such a quintessential citywide event, one that makes the whole of May so memorable for so many citizens.
The festival itself may be transient, but the memories linger forever. Increasingly, though, Brighton Fringe is part of the life of the city throughout the year. Every year, its impact across Brighton and Hove - and beyond - becomes more profound. As you will gather from this special festival guide, Brighton Fringe 2015 promises to have something for everyone: cabaret, comedy, and dance; literature, theatre, film, and music; and visual arts, tours, and workshops. There is a lot that is new, including some amazing venues and many remarkable performers making their debuts. More than 175 events are free. You can be certain to enjoy never-to-beforgotten experiences and emotions. You can count on having fun. So be equally sure to make the most of May. top ten HOT TIPS
With more than 775 events at 180 venues, we are spoiled for choice throughout the whole of Brighton Fringe. To help you decide, SUZANNE ROSE highlights a personal selection of 10 of the many "must-see" performances and events. Obviously, this list of hot tips is neither exhaustive, nor definitive!
I AM NOT ANTIGONE
MIRANDO THE GAY TEMPEST
After a successful first run at Amsterdam Fringe, this retelling of a 2,500-yearold story features two performers – a girl and her assistant – plus an iPhone, a MacBook and Twitter. It’s a playful tragedy about a generation of revolutionaries who prefer to rebel via social media than actually do something in real life. In this era of “slacktivism”, where so many of us are guilty of expressing political opinions with the click of a mouse and little more, it’s a relevant and intriguing look at the world today, where politicians twist the truth and how stories and images are created for our consumption online. 7 May 18:45; 8, 10 May 17:45; £11 (£9.50) Venue: Otherplace at the Basement, Main Space, BN1 4AJ
In probably the Fringe’s most intimate venue, a private home in Kemptown, this is an exuberant adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest by the award-winning Theatre North, and follows the success of their 2011 play Billy Budd Sailor, which was performed in a bathroom. Mirando the Gay Tempest is a one-man tour de force imagining the play peopled by gay characters, with Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, transformed into a son. The play explores the body as a tool for storytelling in a fascinating and skilled way, and if getting up close and personal with the actor is your thing, this is one you must check out. 1-6 May, 8-10 May 20:00; 3, 9-10 May 15:00; £10 (£8) Venue: Theatre North, 11 Crescent Place, BN2 1AS
FUNK THE FAMILY FESTIVAL This family favourite returns bigger and bolder this year, with Hove Park transformed into a musical, fun-packed wonderland. There’s oodles of stuff for the kids, from the Cirque de Funk in the striped big top, supervised NERF battles and bush-craft workshops to soft play, face painting and arts and crafts galore. Live music includes performances from Omar, 12-piece outfit Nubiyan Twist and Brighton-based jazz/hip-hop trio Normanton Street, plus plenty of DJs. Keep your energy levels up with top-notch grub from Brighton’s premier street-food market, Street Diner. For lots more information, visit: www. funkthefamily.co.uk 30 May 11:00; £18.50 (£8.50), £49.50 family ticket for two adults and two children Venue: Hove Park
CAMILLE O’SULLIVAN
COPPERDOLLAR CLUB NIGHT
“When she sings, it’s as though her breath is soaked in paraffin; one spark, and the whole room would ignite.” This is how the Daily Telegraph describes Irish singer and actress Camille O’Sullivan, one of the most gifted interpreters of narrative songs around. She has wowed audiences at sell-out shows worldwide with her dramatic takes on numbers by Nick Cave, Jacques Brel, Tom Waits, and Radiohead, to name but a few. Fierce, passionate and mesmerising, Camille transforms seemingly simple songs into gripping theatrical experiences, drawing the audience into her wonderful, bizarre world. Is it burlesque? Is it cabaret? You’ll have to go along and decide for yourself. 2-3 May 20:00; 4, 6-10, 12-13 May 21:00; £20 (£18) Venue: Spiegeltent, Old Steine Pleasure Gardens, BN1 1GY
The sumptuous Spiegeltent kicks off its first night in spectacular style with a wild and wonderful five-hour club night hosted by Brightonbased Copperdollar. Veterans of the festival circuit with appearances at Glastonbury and Bestival under their belts, as well as the National Theatre, they create immersive theatrical dreamscapes, inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead, to break down the wall between audience and performer. A heady, bone-shaking melange of Latin, funk and ska will keep you moving well into the early hours. 1 May 21:00; £12 (£10) Venue: Spiegeltent, Old Steine Pleasure Gardens, BN1 1GY

JOHN HEGLEY Londoner John Hegley has been devastating TV, radio and festival audiences worldwide with his hilarious, innovative comic poems on such diverse topics as family, love, dogs, France, the misery of human existence, art, taxidermy, carrots and spectacles. Described as “comedy’s poet laureate” by the Independent, he started off busking comic songs in the late Seventies, then fronted The Popticians in the early 1980s, with whom he recorded two sessions for John Peel. A regular sell-out at Edinburgh Festival, his show at Fringe, “New and Selected Potatoes” is sure to have you rolling in the aisles. 3 May 19:30; £12 (£10) Venue: Komedia Studio, Main Space, BN1 1UN
BEASTS The delightfully hilarious show at last year’s Brighton Fringe by this critically-acclaimed sketch group sold out, and for good reason. Formed in 2012, BEASTS are Owen Roberts, James McNicholas and Ciaran O’Dowd, and their show is produced by Gravel Comedy, a group that’s been making outstanding new comedy both on the London fringe and at Edinburgh Fringe since 2008. The Times refers to them as “unforgettably nutty”; the Telegraph as “delightfully entertaining”. “Impossible not to cry with laughter”, promises the Sunday Express. Be-suited and bow-tied, they’re smart and slick in both appearance and line delivery. 22-23 May 20:30; £10 (£8.50) Venue: The Warren, Theatre Box, BN1 4GU
AND THE DEVIL MAY DRAG YOU UNDER This riotous, technicolour feast returns to Brighton Fringe this year by popular demand, with Desmond O’Connor (as Satan himself) heading up a band of devilish performers. The show invites the audience to decide, from a showcase of acts, which ones are destined for heaven and which for hell. It’s a riotous, wild mix of pantomime, vaudeville and musical, featuring well-established cabaret and circus stars. Previous acts have included Frisky and Mannish, with their expertly delivered observations on pop music, Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer, who’s on a one-man mission to introduce hip-hop to the Queen’s English, and the Cabaret Whore herself, Sarah-Louise Young. 1-3, 8-10 May 19:30; £12 (£10) Venue: The Dukebox @ St Andrew’s, BN3 1AQ
FRINGE CITY FAMILY Picnic MUSCOVADO Playwright Matilda Ibini possesses serious calibre. The writer-in-residence at Soho Theatre, she has trained at the Royal Court and was the youngest winner of the BBC Writersroom 10 award. Muscovado is an unflinching portrayal of life on a Barbadian sugar plantation in 1808, a visceral, compelling watch, and not entirely comfortable, given the role of the British in the slave trade. It’s accompanied by an original music score and atmospheric soundscape, and brings to the audience a heady mix of sexual intrigue and disturbing racial tension, punctuated by piercing choral music. A daring interpretation of a period of history that should never be forgotten. 7 May 14:15; 5-6, 26-27 May 19:30; £8 (£6) Venue: The Dukebox @ St Andrew’s, BN3 1AQ
Pack a hamper full of goodies, dig out your picnic blankets, and pray the sun shines over this free event at Pavilion Gardens - which was so much fun last year that they’re doing it twice in 2015. It’s a lovely way to dip your toe into the Fringe experience, and best of all it’s the most wallet-friendly four hours of family-friendly fun you’ll have all month. There’ll be child-friendly performances, face painting, sports activities and more. Or just kick back in a deckchair with tea and cake from Pavilion Gardens Café while soaking up the atmosphere. 2, 23 May 13:00; free, non-ticketed Venue: Royal Pavilion Gardens, BN1 1EE

Political shows: events And satires Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy
It's an historic few days in democratic history. They are the days in May that could change all our lives. For the first-time since Brighton and Hove achieved city status, a general election and a citywide council election coincide on the same day. And Brighton Fringe is where you can enjoy the run-up to polling, celebrate - often cerebrally - the moment of victory (and defeat), and then ponder what it all means. There are more than 20 events - most of them comedic or satirical - that can be broadly described as political, with a small "p" and a big laugh. Brighton Fringe proves politics really can be fun. On May 7, the place to be will be Otherplace at the Basement - one of the busiest, biggest, buzziest, and best Brighton Fringe venues - at 24 Kensington Street in the North Laine. The Late Show: Election Night Special promises an evening of polls, puns and psephology, spin, sleaze and swingometers, battling past the ballot box with a cabaret cabinet packed with a parliamentary portfolio of political entertainment. It is all followed by live election results screened until the early hours. Where else would you want to be for the "Michael Portillo"moment of the 2015 general election? The organisers have, however, issued a caution: the evening may well contain traces of Dimbleby. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
Patrick Lappin: Chasing Norman Tebbit You get more right-wing as you get older, right? Last Wednesday, Patrick Lappin began to get older. Will he become more right-wing, too? Can he find his inner Norman Tebbit? Can he, just by reading the Daily Telegraph online, breaking the speed-limit as a point of principle, and eating old chicken out of the wheelie bin of a former secretary of state for employment, teach himself to be Tory? Can he get on his bike and take the mountainous path to Tebbit? 8-10 May 20:00; £6.50 (£5) Venue: Lamb Comedy @ Nowhere Man, 53 Upper North Street, BN1 3FH For tickets, visit: www.brightonfringe.org
The Treason Show: Election Special! Brighton's all-year round, cult satire comedy sketch show, with their unique take on the general election. Now in its 15th year and nicely settled into their brand new home, the Rialto Theatre. New venues A whooping 176 venues will host Brighton Fringe events this year and there are plenty of new venues to keep even the most veteran of Fringe goers on their toes. New this year is the Rialto Theatre on Dyke Road, where you will now find the Treason Show (6-9 May) plus an array of theatre for the curiously minded. Also making its Brighton Fringe debut is Kemptown’s Lantern Theatre on Rock Place, which boasts a creative line-up of theatre, music and children’s shows. The mighty Otherplace Productions celebrate 10 years at Brighton Fringe by taking up residency at the Basement on Kensington Street where you’ll find Fringe treats aplenty. Their large scale, pop-up
venue The Warren has moved from Wagner Hall behind Churchill Square to the grounds of St Peter’s Church on York Place. This relocation sees the entire strip of green space from the Old Steine, where you’ll find the wondrous Spiegeltent, past Victoria Gardens (home to the Lady Boys of Bangkok), up to St Peter’s Church will be filled with artistic offerings. Otherplace’s former residency Upstairs at the Three in Ten has become Over Broadway and will be hosting 'out there' theatre, including mini-festival Arcade of Fools (12-16 May) and lunchtime cabaret shows (4-15, 18-31 May). The small but perfectly formed Dukebox Theatre, at the Iron Duke pub on Waterloo Street, is taking over the beautiful St Andrews
Church opposite. DukeBox punches well above its weight in terms of the quality of shows on offer including new play Muscovado (5-7 & 26-27 May) by Soho Theatre’s Writer-in-Residence Matilda Ibini, and ukulele-playing cabaret performer extraordinaire Desmond O'Connor (1-3, 8-10 May), former Cambridge Footlight member with Sacha Baron Cohen, Mitchell and Webb and Richard Ayoade. Also new is Nowhere Man, Lamb Comedy’s intimate and chilled Upper North Street venue, which includes a bar and coffee shop. A whole host of comics will perform there throughout May including Funny Women Finalist Viv Groskop (29-31 May) and the ever-original Patrick Lappin (8-10 May).

Fringe City For the first four weekends in May, Brighton’s North Laine comes alive with Fringe City, a free showcase of pop up performances and live music enjoyed by a crowd of 10,000 each day. This giant celebration of all things creative is the best way to get a taste of this year’s Fringe with around 30 performances a day dotted around New Road, the Pavilion Gardens, Jubilee Square and the Old Steine. New this year is the Get On. Go Somewhere bus, featuring free afternoon performances on its top deck. The bus, which will be parked next to Spiegeltent on various days across Fringe City (2, 9, 23 May), has been donated by Brighton and Hove buses and given a street art make-over by incredible graf artist iownthisart (aka Jason McQuillen) and interior designer Chloe Bullock. On 16 May, it will manoeuvre up to New Road where
iownthisart is inviting families to try their hand at street-style sticker making or bring along every day items to be inked by the man himself. For the rest of the month, the bus will bring a bit of Brighton Fringe to as many people as possible with surprise appearances on routes across the city so keep your eyes peeled. You can also get crafty with Doddle’s Paper Aeroplane Challenge (2,3,23 & 24 May)so let your creative juices flow. Other four-wheeled fun comes courtesy of Grolsch’s old fashioned pickup truck (Jubilee Square, 1 to 4 and 22 to 25 May). Decked out with weird and wonderful cameras, you can produce all manner of original self-portraits and enjoy a cold beer on the house while you create. Energetic junk percussion duo Bang On, semi-finalists from Britain’s Got Talent, will also be embracing their inner petrolhead by
turning two Citroen cars into huge percussion drum kits, playing the entire vehicles with their hands (9 and 16 May). A huge Fringe City family picnic will take over the Pavilion Gardens on the two May bank holiday Saturdays (2 and 23). The Sussex County Cricket Club will be in residence on 2 May with inflatable cricket games and their ever faithful mascot Sid the Shark. There'll also be free face painting courtesy of Metrobank and a wealth of treats from the Heart FM Angels. Taster performances from the best of Brighton Fringe’s family shows will have the Fringe City picnic stage jumping all afternoon. FOOD AND DRINK Getting around the biggest arts festival in England requires energy. Make sure you are well fed throughout Brighton Fringe with this guide to just some of the best food and drink in town, by SUZANNE ROSE, the food and drink columnist for Brighton & Hove Independent.
Places I eat Suzanne Rose @placesieatbtn
SEAFRONT The New Club serves up excellent brunches, burgers, small plates, and cocktails - all at affordable prices. The Bloody Mary made with bacon vodka will cure even the worst hangover. If the weather’s good, grab a seat outside overlooking the West Pier.
Fresh fish right on the beach is hard to beat and Riddle and Finns is a stone’s throw from the sea, with a sun-soaked outdoor terrace. Its sister restaurant, a champagne and oyster bar of the same name, is a short walk inland on Meeting House Lane and wonderful for a candlelit evening meal.
Seafood restaurant The Salt Room is one of Brighton’s most hyped, snazzy new openings, with a seriously-slick interior, fab outdoor terrace, and killer cocktails. The shellfish platters are a real treat, but don’t come cheap - while the lunch and pretheatre menus are a steal.
Lucky Beach is smack on the stones with unparalleled views of the sea. It’s open all day, with a menu that covers everything from excellent breakfasts to 35-day-aged burgers and fish and chips.

The Lanes and city centre Curry Leaf Café never disappoints, with modern twists on traditional dishes in a lovely, intimate setting. The mutton curry is out of this world and the beer menu is superb. The spiced Indian brunch is a real treat, served only on Sundays from noon.
For high-end veggie fare, Terre á Terre can’t be beaten with beautifully-presented dishes that wow. The Terre á Tapas sharing plate has almost iconic status and is an absolute feast for the eyes. 71 East Street, BN1 1HQ www.terreaterre.co.uk @terreaterre
60 Ship Street, BN1 1AE www.curryleafcafe.com @curryleafcaff The most-talked-about restaurant of last year, 64 Degrees continues to impress with its innovative small plates, open kitchen, and excellent music. It’s not the cheapest night out, but if you want to be wowed and try some of the most interesting food around, get down there. 53 Meeting House Lane, BN1 1HB www.64degrees.co.uk @chef64degrees
Moshimo is an authentic Japanese restaurant housed in a traditional-style building with sliding-screen doors, where you can select exquisite sushi and small plates from the belt or go á la carte. Everything is spankingly fresh and the plum wine a must-try. Bartholomew Square, BN1 1JS www.moshimo.co.uk @moshimobrighton Vegetarians are generally well-catered for everywhere in Brighton, but if you fancy going entirely meat-free, you’re in the right place. Food for Friends has been around since 1981 and is a lovely, bright space with hearty yet beautifully presented food. Three meze for £12 is a wallet-pleasing way to sample the menu. 17-18 Prince Albert Street, BN1 1HF www.foodforfriends.com @foodforfriends
Fancy a cocktail? Plateau is a gorgeous place where you can easily lose track of time, with a cocktail menu that focuses on classics with light, modern twists. When you get hungry, their small bites and sharing platters are an absolute treat. 1 Bartholomews, BN1 1HG www.plateaubrighton.co.uk @plateaubrighton
A short stroll away is Cocktail Shack. It’s intimate and relaxing, with a small but perfectly formed menu. Grab the coveted window seat to enjoy your drinks overlooking the pier. 34 Regency Square, BN1 2FJ www.cocktailshackbrighton.co.uk @cocktailshack Next door, The Set is an achingly-cool new restaurant that’s getting tongues wagging with its original and inventive four-course set menus and in-the-know sommelier. Silo, the UK’s first zero-waste restaurant/ bakery/coffee house, is a unique place. Sit on chipboard furniture, drink from a jam jar, and watch your leftovers get tipped into the onsite composter. Sounds gimmicky? With food this delicious, you’ll be soon wishing all chefs had the same ethos, passion and talent.
Head to Seven Dials where Coggings and Co serve superb ethically-sourced burgers – the best in town - in a stylish restaurant setting. The beef dripping chips are a must, while the secluded garden is lovely on a sunny evening. 87-93 Dyke Road, BN1 3JE www.coggingsandco.co.uk @coggingsandco
39 Upper Gardner Street, BN1 4AN | www.silobrighton.com @silo_brighton The Chilli Pickle has bagged a swathe of awards for its stylish interpretation of Indian street food. Their lunchtime thalis are excellent value - while, in the evening, their tandoori platters are a thing of beauty.
Hove-bound? The small, stylish The Gingerman restaurant on Norfolk Square is one of the best places in town and does a superb two-course lunch menu for £15. Its sister pub The Ginger Pig, in Hove Street, serves up high-end food in a cosy pub atmosphere.
17 Jubilee Street, BN1 1GE www.thechillipickle.com @thechillipickle
www.gingermanrestaurants.com @gingermandish In the mood for Mexican? La Choza is a cool, cheap, eccentric little spot that’s open all day for 14-hour smoked pulled pork burritos and hibiscus margaritas. The menu is small, but has something for everyone. 36 Gloucester Road, BN1 4AQ www.lachoza.co.uk @lachoza2
And if you need a quick bite before leaving town, pop into The Cyclist at Brighton Station. Despite its unlikely setting, this quirky pub has lovely food and an impressive cake display. Well worth making time for. www.thecyclistbrighton.co.uk @cyclistbrighton
If you need to grab and go, Burger Brothers has queues out the door and for good reason: they’re absolutely the messiest, tastiest burgers in this area.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Semolina is an intimate café/bistro that serves up classic, considered food at reasonable prices - plus Saturday brunch and Sunday roasts.

MEATLiquor isn’t for the faint-hearted. Brighton Fringe Awards This year Brighton Fringe will be hosting its first ever awards ceremony to celebrate the outstanding performances and events that make this year’s festival fly. Most awards are selected by industry experts and critics but the Brighton Fringe Audience Choice Award puts you in the driving seat. Look out for official iFringe posters when you go to see a show then simply text the show’s special code to 60300. The competition will take into account the size of the venue and the length of its run so large and small shows can compete fairly. You can vote for as many different shows as you like, but you can only vote for each show once, so choose wisely. You can also vote for your favourite family show with the new Camp Bestival Family Show Award. To vote, go along to one (or more!) of the shows listed below and fill out a ballot card on your way out. In return you could win a weekend Family Ticket to the mighty Camp Bestival (30 July – 2 August), staying in a Tipi Tent in the Boutique Campsite with premium showers and toilets. Two runners-up will receive Family Weekend tickets. Not only that, you’ll be doing your bit for the arts as the winning show will be given a slot to perform at Camp Bestival. q &a with damian barr What makes Brighton Fringe so special? The people and setting. Our whole city becomes one big non-stop performance. Every space, from the sewers to the sky, becomes a venue. We're a naturally creative lot - which makes for really engaged audiences, and lots of local participants.

How has Brighton Fringe changed over the years? It's got bigger and slicker and some people don't like that we now compete with Edinburgh. But this means we can give an even bigger platform. Which means more shows. May sees Brighton Festival and The Great Escape and Artists’ Open Houses too. It's an amazing place to be and we're all working together to make it the best month! What do you enjoy about Brighton Fringe? I've staged a play in a beach hut; I've been to comedy in a phone box; I've sat through some shockers. And still talk about some wonders. I love that I never know what to expect or where the fringe will suddenly pop up. It's anarchic, but not chaotic - it's truly open access. Which gives everyone a chance to tell their story. I am all about stories!
What does Brighton Fringe say / reflect about Brighton and Hove? Let's be honest, could you see this happening in quite the same way in, say, Thanet? We're an open-minded city, though not always as open as we think. The fringe makes us think anew about the world we live in and new worlds we might imagine or even create for ourselves. The way we embrace the fringe as audience and creators says we are a city that's always changing. What are you particularly looking forward to this year? I love anti-drag queen David Hoyle and he's at the Spiegeltent - where I've held my Literary Salon before. The Treason Show, a brilliant local group, is doing an election night special. And the literature highlight will surely be Good Grief, presented by The Martlets Hospice, which will explore loss and creative responses to it. Damian Barr, a member of the Brighton Fringe Board, is the author of the best-selling Maggie & Me, published by Bloomsbury. For more information, visit: www.facebook.com/DamianBarrLiterarySalon. Some of the many faces of Brighton Fringe
Mary Beth Morossa is a cabaret artist and theatre maker (Photograph: Michael Delaney) She is making her debut at the festival this year with her second solo show, Greywing House - a multi-artform hour of dark storytelling using beat poetry, puppets, dance and film: 22, 23, 24 May, 22:00, at The Warren, Theatre Box, BN1 4GU. Tickets cost £9.50 (£8).
Gemma Arrowsmith, the award-winning character comedian, presents Everything That's Wrong with the Universe. Sketches and characters explore homeopathy, plastic surgery, and even shampoo adverts: 15, 16, 17 May; 19:00 at The Warren, Theatre Box.
The architects behind the Brighton i360 will host the attraction’s first "talk and tour" events as part of Brighton Fringe on May 21. Starting at nearby Alfresco, the tours will be led by David Marks, who will discuss the inspiration behind the tower, why Brighton was chosen, and the challenges of building this unique attraction. There are two "talk and tour" events on Thursday, May 21: one at 9:00 and the other at 10:30. Tickets cost £10.
Henry Adams, gentleman, cordially invites you to join him at the recently-completed 1 Brunswick Terrace, to partake in an "elegant entertainment".Regency Delights offers improvised role play, interacting with - and responding to - the public in the first person, allowing the audience to gain a thought-provoking and entertaining insight into the Georgian period: 6, 9, 13, and 20 May; twice-nightly 45-minute dance instruction at either 18:30 or 20:00.
Windmill Young Actors, a Brighton-based youth theatre company, takes on Peter Hall’s Animal Farm in a physical rampage of a production. Dynamic physical theatre and political passion combine to tell the story of freedom and equality conquered by greed. Animal Farm celebrates the spirit of revolution - and mourns it as it is destroyed by paranoia and the need for profit: 18 and 19 May, 6pm; £9.00 (£7.50) at The Warren, Main House, BN1 4GU.
ALL ABOARD! - THE brighton fringe bus
Especially for Brighton Fringe, an extraordinary outsize artwork celebrates the role of the bus in the city’s creative and cultural life. “Get On. Go Somewhere” was commissioned by Brighton & Hove Bus Company. The piece started life as an ordinary double-decker bus, and has been completely transformed - not only the exterior but also inside, floors, ceilings, lighting and seats. It is covered with original work by iownthisart (aka Jason McQuillen), the young Brighton artist. Julian Caddy, the Fringe's managing director, said: “I love the way this work represents the city’s independent creative spirit - and it has a fantastic practical application as it will be used for performances and travel during the Brighton Fringe.”
