Albion in the Community ambassador Jadey Yesilada
Charity stars to feature on bus Albion in the Community ambassador Jadey Yesilada is one of the charity’s stars whose faces will become more familiar in the coming weeks. Their pictures will appear on a number of Brighton and Hove Buses routes to spread the word about their work. Jadey is well known to Brighton and Hove Albion fans as the inspirational figurehead of the Jadey’s Dream appeal. It aims to raise more than £200,000 towards the charity’s disability programme.
Having benefited from AITC’s disability sport sessions, Jadey is trying to raise enough money to make sure that everyone in Sussex with a disability has the opportunity to take part in sport. Bus company boss Martin Harris said: “Providing a dedicated bus to celebrate and promote AITC’s work and initiatives like Jadey’s Dream is a contribution our staff are very proud of.” More than 52,000 people took part in a range of sessions run by AITC in 2013.
Walk into St Nicholas Church, Brighton, in the next three weeks and a major art installation by Turner Prize shortlisted artist Nathan Coley will challenge you. The message “You Imagine What You Desire” is spelled out in large capital letters mounted on scaffolding filling one of the Norman arches of Brighton’s oldest building. It is one the key works in the HOUSE contemporary visual arts festival, Edge and Shift, which runs alongside the Brighton Festival from May 2 to 24 and takes art out to the city, sometimes in unusual settings. Entry to the exhibitions is free. Nathan’s exhibition at Hove’s Regency Town House, Portrait of Dissension, explores architectural themes in a state of renewal and destruction, with references to materials from the Royal Pavilion and images of the Grand Hotel on the day it was bombed. Elsewhere in the Town House, artists Amanda Loomes, Joseph Popper and the City Collective

take Nathan’s themes to develop the idea of Edge and Shift through unrest, space and occupation, conflict and aftermath. All the HOUSE exhibitions are co-commissioned with partners: Brighton Festival (Nathan Coley), Photoworks (Amanda Loomes and the City Collective) and Lighthouse (Joseph Popper). HOUSE also includes an exhibition organised in partnership with Outside In at
the Phoenix Gallery, Intuitive Visions: Shifting the Margins, which features the work of artists who have overcome barriers to the art world presented to them by their health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. At a pop-up cinema in a hidden and disused wood yard only five minutes walk from Brighton Station, HOUSE and partner Cinecity will show films of dissent and protest, among them Peter Watkin’s Culloden, Mike Figgis and Jeremy Deller’s The Battle of Orgeave and The Silent Village by Humphrey Jennings – a restaging of the destruction of the Czech mining village of Lidice in 1943. Tickets for the films are £4 to £8 (with concessions) and are available at www.eventbrite.co.uk. Bill Randall is Chair of HOUSE. Campaigning for LGBT+ communities As one of the biggest Pride festivals in the United Kingdom, Brighton and Hove Pride leads the way in campaigning for the rights of our global LGBT+ community. Such campaigning - along with community fundraising - is the cornerstone of everything Pride represents. By highlighting the lives of LGBT+ communities across the globe, Brighton and Hove Pride asks us to look beyond our own backyard and engage with those LGBT+ people living in countries where they are criminalised or persecuted simply because of their gender or sexuality. The catalogue of abuse goes on: the Egyptian government’s recent crackdown on the freedoms enjoyed by gay men, with increasing arrests and prosecutions; the horrific pictures released by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS) - allegedly showing two gay men being thrown to their deaths from the top of a tower; and the continuing legislative process in the United States against the Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of same-sex marriage. All serve as a reminder how far we have yet to go in the fight for LGBTQI equality. The Freedom To Live campaign, which started at Pride in 2013, will show that we can stand beside those in other countries and campaign for the freedom to live. The 2015 Brighton Pride Community Parade will highlight the 78 countries where it is illegal to be homosexual or engage in homosexual conduct; once again it will include 78 placards representing those countries on the parade. Brighton and Hove Pride is proud to be a voice for others; it is proud to be a Pride with purpose. If you would like to volunteer to carry a Pride campaigning placard, visit: www.brighton-pride.org

Last year’s festival and Pride Village Party were hailed a resounding success, raising almost £110,000 for local community organisations over two years - and delivering a safe and diverse weekend, with overwhelmingly-positive feedback from visitors, Brighton & Hove City Council, Sussex Police, community organisations, and local businesses. After broad feedback from community groups, Pride plans to set up a new community fund that could benefit local projects where Pride has a social impact on local residents. Paul Kemp, director of Brighton and Hove Pride, said: “Last year was the first year that Pride have organised the Village Party. Pride have been gathering feedback for a variety of community sources and the majority of feedback has been positive with many feeling the village party was a safer and more controlled event, but we recognise we still have lots of work to do on improving the impact on the local area. “We are committed to our ongoing fundraising for the Rainbow Fund, but we hope to set up a new fund that could benefit all our communities in the area’s most affected by the social impact of the Pride weekend celebrations. “Our priority remains to deliver a safe and sustainable Pride weekend, but - with the continued support of local businesses for the Pride Village party 2015 - we hope that more local good causes that benefit all our communities could be supported in the future.”

Business How you handle media in a crisis Ollie Wilson @Matchfit_Media In this fortnightly column, members of Brighton Chamber of Commerce share their top business tips with readers. OLLIE WILSON, managing partner of Matchfit Media, the Brightonbased PR and media training company, discusses how to handle the media in a crisis. In my career as a journalist and PR man, I have seen many a crisis befall companies and organisations - and advised the people at the top on what to do. No two crises are the same, but it is vital to put plans in place to help you handle bad news and unexpected events. Do a risk analysis of what could adversely affect your business. You may not think of all the possibilities, but it is a first step towards creating a crisis management plan.
In each scenario, ask: who would need to know what, and when would they need to know it? Who should be in the “crisis management team”? Who would the spokesperson or spokespersons be? And how would you make sure that clear, accurate, and consistent messages are communicated to the media? At MatchFit Media (www. matchfitmedia.co.uk), we run “table-top exercises” to give organisations experience at handling crises, setting a series of scenarios to put a crisis management team through its paces. Their performance is analysed and lessons learned. For many in business, the media may appear scary at the best of times. We train people so they are at the top of their game when interviewed. In a crisis, companies and organisations can see journalists as hostile interlopers, when they are merely doing their jobs.

BrewDog finally signs lease on Brighton pub
Jo Wadsworth @BrightonNewsJo
Treat journalists politely and professionally and they will respect you for it. Remember, it is the journalist’s role to get to the facts of a story and to obtain the viewpoints of the key people involved. Communicating the right information to people inside your organisations is also vital. You do not want your team to feel out of the loop because they are learning things first from the media. A craft brewery chain has finally signed a lease for the former Blind Tiger Club a year after it closed following noise complaints from neighbours. Although BrewDog first announced its intentions to open in Brighton last year, legal complications delayed the deal. But now the lease is signed, the rapidly growing company hopes to open at the Grand Parade site this summer after an extensive refurbishment. Stephen Hogan, of BrewDog, said: “We are hugely excited to finally acquire a Brighton venue as we have been looking here for some time. Brighton’s cool independent vibe along with a growing craft beer scene makes it an incredible place for us to open a new bar.” The site has been empty since May
last year when its owners pulled the plug after being served with a noise abatement notice following complaints from several neighbours. They said that this effectively meant it could no longer operate as a music venue. A council officer who measured noise in the flat above the stage said that it was the worst noise nuisance they had ever encountered. The flats above the venue were created after developer Sigma Estates secured planning permission to convert the space above what was then called Hector’s House in 2000. Two flats were created with a roof extension, with a third converted from the upstairs toilets. The property was leased through leisure property specialist Fleurets. Kate Dowd, of Fleurets, said: “With the lack of sites coming to the market in the city, particularly leaseholds that are free of tie, we are extremely pleased to have secured this site for BrewDog.

Geologists share in £2.7m high-tech research grant Brighton University is sharing in a £2.7 million grant to identify new sources of rare elements. The elements are vital for a growing number of high-tech processes and products such as wind turbines and hybrid cars. The research will also investigate new ways to lower the environmental impact of extracting the rare earth elements (REEs). The university is receiving £400,000 from the Natural Environment Research Council to fund a post-doctoral researcher working on experimental studies of rare earth behaviour on mineral surfaces. The grant will also fund a PhD studentship to work on the behaviour of the elements in enriched rock types, from magmatic to weathering systems. Martin Smith, reader in geology in the School of Environment and Technology, is leading the university’s contribution to the four-year project. The university will work with the Camborne School of Mines at Exeter University, Leeds University, the British Geological Survey, Sheffield University and St Andrews University. He said: “Neodymium magnets are also essential components for hybrid cars with electric motors and rare earth elements are also used in catalysts, alloys and phosphors used in energyefficient lighting and display screens, glass and polishing materials and ceramics.” Dr Smith said: “This is an exciting, multidisciplinary research project which we hope will lead us to secure and lowenvironmental-impact supplies of critical rare earth elements.”

Freedom Leisure named as a finalist for ‘Shaping Young People’s Lives’ at national industry awards The Crawley Parkour project - run by the Freedom Leisure team at K2 Crawley in partnership with Crawley Borough Council - has been named as a finalist at the leisure industry’s prestigious ukactive Flame awards in the ‘ShapingYoung People’s Lives’ category. In a category facing stiff competition, Freedom Leisure, which operates 7 sites in Brighton & Hove, have made the shortlist in the 2015 ukactive & Matrix Flame Awards. The ‘Shaping Young People’s Lives’ category recognises projects that are making a significant impact on the lives of young people through physical activity. The shortlist for the most highly coveted national awards in the health, fitness and physical activity sector represents the penultimate stage in the awards process. “We are honoured to be shortlisted by ukactive for this prestigious industry award, as we know the competition is tough and the standard is high,”says Dave Downey, Freedom Leisure Community Sports Development Officer.“The Crawley Parkour project really has gone from strength to strength. Starting back in 2010, our main aim has always been to improve the lives of young people in Crawley whilst giving them the skills and
confidence. Having engaged so many young people in Parkour, being a finalist is the icing on the cake on what has been a fantastic journey with Crawley Borough Council so far.” Parkour initially started to help address the growing concern from parents, teachers and local residents about the safety of unsupervised young people practising Parkour-style moves on the streets. The project was introduced in response to a gap in formal Parkour provision and was quickly received as a positive alternative to anti-social behaviour in Crawley which encouraged increased physical activity and self-confidence amongst participants. Parkour is the activity of overcoming obstacles using safe, efficient, fluid movement. More broadly it can be defined as the discipline of developing the physical and mental capacity of the human being while training to overcome obstacles.Traditionally done outdoors it can be practised in both urban and natural spaces and can be seen as an art of self-expression and exploration.A relatively new activity, having been developed in France 20 years ago, Parkour is often popular with young people who don’t engage with mainstream sports but who enjoy being tested physically and
mentally. The Crawley Parkour project launched in 2010 and was initially backed by Sportivate. It is now self-funded and led by locally trained coaches: due to the growing popularity of the classes, it is now open to boys and girls aged 10 years old and above. The winners will be announced at the ukactive & Matrix Flame Awards Night on June 24th atThe International Centre,Telford. Those living in Brighton will be able to take part in the Parkour sessions which take place at the Bewbush ParkourTraining Area in Crawley. It will cost £3 per session or £16 per 6 week course and attendees will be able to pay on the day.The next six-week Parkour programme begins onThursday 4th June 2015. On one level, it’s reassuring to know our visit to the Dripping Pan is on the agenda; on another level, it’s possibly indicative that, behind the scenes, the club is looking to sort things out as quickly as possible. Maybe. Meanwhile, as the summer beckons – wellies, umbrellas,
rain-stopped-play – the Roar has finished, but we’ll be doing some one-off shows during the close season. We start by welcoming back PC Darren Balkham, Football Liaison Officer with Sussex Police, and international best-selling crime-writer Peter James, author of the Roy Grace detective series. Tune into Radio Reverb, 97.2FM, online at www.radioreverb.com, or via the podcast on iTunes and www.albionroar.co.uk. The show is brought to you in association with www.oldfootballshirts.com
With the 2014/15 season coming to an end for Albion last weekend, it’s time to reflect on the past ten months on the pitch. There was real optimism going into the start of the campaign, as Sami Hyypia stepped into the managerial role vacated by Oscar Garcia. The belief amongst the support was that Albion would be competing at the top end of the Championship once again. However, what many thought was just a slow start for a manager getting to grips with the English game turned into a full-blown relegation struggle, as the Seagulls went on a run of one win in 17 games between the start of September and Hyypia’s final game in charge at Wolves, in mid-December. The Finn may have had the backing of chairman Tony Bloom but performances on the pitch and tactical naivety meant he had lost the fans, and he fell on his own sword.
Nathan Jones steered the club through the Christmas period, with his work built on by incoming boss Chris Hughton. The former Newcastle manager’s knowledge of the division helped steer the club to safety after looking like it was sleepwalking into League One. The turnaround in form at the Amex was crucial, with wins against the likes of Ipswich and Derby crucial when looking at the final table. The run-in was poor but
it highlighted the job to be done in terms of summer recruitment. Many clubs have taken steps forward this season, whilst Albion went backward. For the first time since 2013, Albion will go into a new season with the same manager that finished the previous one. With Hughton at the helm and calling the shots on transfers, there’s every chance they can be fighting it out at the top end of the division next time around.

Hawks are close to reaching unchartered territory Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion The incredible rise of Whitehawk Football Club could culminate in a Conference place tomorrow afternoon in Hertfordshire. Just a jellied eels’ throw from where laugh-a-minute EastEnders is filmed in Elstree, Borehamwood host the east Brighton side in the Conference South Play-Off final – a place in the fifth tier of English football the significant carrot. The Hawks’ journey is remarkable. As recently as 2009/10, Sussex County League football was hosted at their – with the hugest of respect – fairly basic stadium, the Enclosed Ground, at the north end of East Brighton Park. To put this into perspective, the Sussex County League is level nine of the English football Pyramid, with the Premier League at the top. Each promotion requires better players, shrewd management, additional administration, and a sprinkling of luck. The bright lights of Isthmian League Division One South beckoned in 2010 as the
champions departed the level they had inhabited since their 1945 formation. A campaign of consolidation was followed by another title and an Isthmian League Premier berth for 2012/13, when a move to Withdean Stadium was vetoed by the council. The Albion link doesn’t end there. Ian Chapman, now doing a great job at Burgess Hill Town, left the club to go fulltime at Albion with Dean Wilkins in 2007 while first goalscorer of the millennium, Darren Freeman, oversaw two title successes at the Enclosed Ground, the last of which resulted in the step up to Conference South in 2013. Former Lewes boss Steve King now finds his team on the verge of the Conference National, home to such famous names as Wrexham, Torquay United, Lincoln City, Aldershot and former League Cup finalists Tranmere Rovers. The Hawks have been bankrolled by local businesses, bringing in players who would not look out of place in a higher division. Former Albion striker, Jake Robinson, has enjoyed a fruitful campaign, netting 26 times, alongside Danny Mills, who has registered 18. The club and the vociferous

Hawks Ultras, residents of The Din (south stand), are proudly anti-homophobic, anti-racist and anti-sexist: a fantastic example of a football club and its supporters doing exactly what a football club is supposed to do – represent its
community. Whitehawk is in east Brighton, close to Kemptown, and one of the most deprived areas in the country. The club’s success has provided a much-needed boost and, come
Saturday afternoon, Whitehawk Football Club could be just one division away from the Football League – almost unthinkable just five years ago. Come on you Hawks! If AFC Bournemouth can do it…
