Domestic & General reveals choice of Rockinghorse as local charity of year
Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and supports the Trevor Mann Baby Unit
Rockinghorse Children’s Charity has been announced as local charity of the year by Domestic & General in Brighton. For the first time, Domestic & General offices from across the United Kingdom have been able to select a local charity to support for the whole year. Offices in Brighton, Nottingham, Wimbledon and Bedworth will host employee events and initiatives to raise much-needed funds. The Brighton office elected Rockinghorse as its local charity of the year following
the inaugural vote across the 900-member contact-centre team. Many employees have a personal affiliation with Rockinghorse. Craig White, Domestic & General’s contact centre director, said: “Rockinghorse is a wonderful charity, helping the most precious and often most vulnerable little lives. When a child is sick, there aren’t many human beings who wouldn’t do whatever is in their power to alleviate suffering. Rockinghorse supports those on the front line and an overwhelming majority
of our employees recognise and value its hard work and want to help.” Analiese Doctrove, head of fundraising at Rockinghorse, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as Domestic & General’s local charity of the year.” Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and supports the Trevor Mann Baby Unit For more information, visit: www.rockinghorse.org.uk.

Withdean Sports Complex organises half-term fun
Athletics and tennis sessions are for children of all abilities
Withdean Sports Complex operated by Freedom Leisure, on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council - is helping children aged five to 12 to beat the boredom this May halfterm by providing breakout tennis and athletic camps every day, from Tuesday to Friday (May 26-29). Qualified children’s instructors will be on hand to deliver a jam-packed timetable of both athletics and tennis sessions and to guide children in improving their skills - while also having fun. Each day, the tennis camps will start at 9am, finishing at noon; athletics will
start at 10am, finishing at 3pm. Ross Philipson, the Freedom Leisure Centre manager, said: “By offering these sessions we really want to encourage children to come and have fun whilst also developing their skills. “The sessions are a great way to keep youngsters active and will ease the pressure on parents during the school holidays. The emphasis is on fun, so all abilities can join in. The sessions also provide a good opportunity for children to meet new friends.” The tennis session will cost members £9 a day or £33 for
four days; for non-members, the cost will be £12 a day or £44 for four days. For children to burn off some steam and have some fun at the athletics will cost £15 a day. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to come along and even partake in one of the centre’s hugely-popular fitness classes, or enjoy a game of squash or badminton, when dropping off the children. To find out more or to book, call the Withdean Sports Complex on 01273 542100. Or visit: www.freedom-leisure.co.uk.

The Dance Space: A place to en JAMIE WATTON, chief executive and artistic director of South East Dance, reveals plans for a new home for dance in the Circus Street area
Dance can transform lives. That may sound glib, but it is absolutely true and the evidence is all around us. Dance makes people happier and healthier; it can foster a sense of community, enhance emotional wellbeing, provoke and challenge perspectives on the world. It is celebratory, exhilarating, and fun. This is why we are so keen for dance to be part of the infrastructure of Brighton and Hove in the form of The Dance Space, a new home for dance in the heart of the city. The project will be part of the regeneration scheme in the Circus Street area of Brighton. At the moment, we have a wealth of fantastic artists in Brighton and Hove and across the southeast. They are, however, currently travelling out of the city to produce work, because the facilities just don’t exist in our region. This means that Brighton and Hove is not only
leaking talent, but also leaking the economic benefits - at a rate of about £1.2 million a year - that come with attracting people to create and present work in the city. The Dance Space can help retain this by providing the facilities, including purposebuilt studios, to attract more people. Beyond the economic benefits, The Dance Space will also be a space for the community - and a place that encourages people to experience dance in different ways. Watching dance in a theatre is just one way (albeit very powerful) to experience dance. But at The Dance Space you can also: take part in a class; talk about dance; experience what it’s like for an artist when they make work; and maybe even influence the direction they take. The Dance Space will provide state-of-the-art studios, as well as other facilities, such as office space for creative businesses. It will be for local people from all walks of life as well as established professional dance artists. Once The Dance Space is up and running, I’m hoping that more local people of all ages and abilities will embrace dance in new ways and realise how fantastically inspiring, thought-provoking, gratifying, healthy, exhilarating, and fun it can be. Ultimately, we want to attract artists to work in the city and connect them with the communities here, because we want to get more people involved and excited by dance. Already we work closely with local communities through a
series of activity programmes in The Dance Space, due to open in schools and groups around the early 2018. When that happens, it is our vision that collaborations Circus Street area and beyond. One such project is Spring: Dance into The Dance Space will Recovery, where we are working in partnership also be a space for with Brighton Oasis Project to use dance the community ” to support women in recovery from substance and alcohol misuse. Another between artists and local people is the wonderful Three Score will be part of the fabric of the Dance Company made up of building. So far we have raised nearly older dancers all aged 60+ whom we support to hold classes and £3 million, thanks to our loyal partners and supporters. Our performances across the area. We will be initiating a number current challenge is to raise of similar projects over the next £500,000 by the end of November, two years as we head towards so building can start on site. This
will be a major milestone in the project, taking us one step closer to achieving our goal of raising the £810,000 we need to make The Dance Space happen. We are creating a brand new creative and community space for everyone - artists and local residents alike, so I would like to ask everyone reading this to consider making even the smallest donation towards creating The Dance Space. We need all the support we can get and it would be great if people living in the city got behind our Space to Dance campaign (#spacetodance). Every pound donated will go towards making The Dance Space a reality.

Business
Profits rise for Pryzm owner
Top Twitter tips for the high-street retailer Lucy Wilkes @totalsocialsec
Having worked with numerous retailers, the initial response I have when talking about social media is that it is an unknown quantity - with confusion over how to market, trade, and get actual sales from Twitter and Facebook. Having run a retail business for 15 years, launched a charity and a new coaching business primarily online, I understand these various issues. I am delighted to be running one of Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce’s Bite-sized Learning sessions to de-mystify these platforms and to show retailers how to really make sales and raise awareness of their brands. ■ Look professional When anyone lands on your social media accounts, they need to want to engage with you. Have a
relevant and fresh profile image, website link, opening times, and a completed bio about your business. ■ Getting the followers There are various ways of increasing your followers, but primarily you need to visualise who you are targeting. Students? Businesses? Day-trippers?. You can find them all them all online. ■ Share your knowledge Sign up for alerts, so you become an expert in your field. Whether you are a florist or hairdresser, there are conversations happening all over the globe that you can contribute to. ■ Take photos Essential, There is a 67% better chance of having your posts shared if they have
visual content. Add pictures of your business, stock, products, customers, and window displays to entice followers to engage with you. ■ Talk - a lot Ideally, you will be posting nearly every day. You can use tools to schedule posts; use analytics to measure your success. ■ Offer events, deals, and special offers online Utilise social media to tell your customers about events, sales, special offers you have – and reach a whole new global audience.
Frank le Duc @BHcitynews The owner of Pryzm, the city’s biggest nightclub, has reported a rise in profits in the year to the end of February. It made £3.7 million profit before tax - up from £3.4 million - on turnover of £93 million, up from £88 million. Luminar, which is renaming itself Deltic, spent £800,000 refurbishing the West Street venue. While it did not break down the result for each of its 58 clubs and bars, it said that likefor-like performance improved 5% year-on-year. It also said that customer spend had risen by 50%. The company also said that it now had at least two female door staff at all of its 50 clubs. This
To see a list of Brighton Chamber’s Bite-sized Learning sessions for businesses www. businessinbrighton.org.uk
follows the success at Oceana in Brighton, where all the external customer-facing door staff are women. Peter Marks, chief executive, said weekend trading across the company was very strong as was midweek trading - although Thursdays were a little soft. Less than four years ago, the outlook was very different and the company’s previous owners closed another venue Project, also in West Street. Mr Marks said: “At the time of acquisition, the board’s focus was on stabilising the Luminar Group and developing a clear strategy for growth. “The company has now delivered its third year of growth, with its strategic focus on investing in its estate, people and entertainment to create great nights out for its customers, delivering strong results. “The acquisition of eight sites from Chicago Leisure in 2014 marked a change in direction, with plans to develop a late night bar business to complement our existing nightclub offer’’. Deltic was chosen by the board, with echoes of the Greek letter delta, associated with change.

Thinking about your retirement? Probably not, but perhaps you should be. Soon the new workplace pension regulation, auto enrolment will affect every existing Brighton and Hove business by February 2018. Brighton has a strong workforce of 170,000 who are contributing £3.2 billion to the economy. Amongst its 9,500 VAT registered businesses, 85% employ fewer than 10 people. It is these businesses that are next in line to be affected by auto enrolment. Currently there are 10 million people in the UK over 65-years-old and by 2050 it will have nearly doubled to 19 million. The average age of a Brighton and Hove resident is 38.6 and 20.6% of the population are currently aged 60 or over. Planning financially for your retirement is paramount in guaranteeing the ongoing success of the city’s small businesses.
If you lie outside of this demographic, you will still need to be categorised and if you choose to you can be ‘opted-in’ to the scheme and make personal contributions. Employees can choose to ‘opt-out’ of the pension and will have their contributions refunded but only once they have been enrolled. Your right to a workplace pension
Auto enrolment will give every employee the opportunity to contribute to a workplace pension. If you are an employee and you earn over £10,000 a year and are aged between 22 and state pension age you will automatically be enrolled into the pension and your employer and the government will make contributions.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the final three games of the Football League season are played, as six teams and their fans head to Wembley with hopes of gaining promotion in the lottery that is the play-offs. One set of supporters will leave jubilant knowing they will compete in a higher division when games get underway again in August. The other team’s fans will leave dejected at having come so close but fallen at the final hurdle. Many Brighton fans have memories of both of those emotions. Since the introduction of the play-offs in 1987, Albion have reached the final on two occasions, with differing results.

A footballing genius on the south coast Last week we remembered Jimmy Case’s significant contribution to the Albion. This time around, it’s his former team-mate, John Crumplin, who takes centre stage. Born in Bath in 1967, Crumplin arrived at the Goldstone in 1987 after impressing in a reserve game at Fratton Park. Turning out for Portsmouth’s second string, the youngster found himself up against Hans Kraay in the heart of Albion’s defence. The Dutchman could be a bit temperamental and kicked out at Crumplin during the game – while the Pompey man was receiving treatment, prostrate, on the pitch! A spell at Bognor followed before Barry Lloyd took the
plunge and shelled out £6,000 for the winger-turned-defender. Crumplin’s first couple of seasons were met with increasing indignation from the terraces, usually demonstrated by the – initially – ironic chant of ‘Johnny Crumplin, football genius’. A wholehearted performance at Bournemouth won over the fans and thereafter his star rose at the Goldstone. John was one of those players that most supporters could relate to – he wasn’t the best, technically, but never gave anything less than absolutely 100%. And the fans loved him for it. Ask any Albion supporter of a certain vintage their main Crumplin memory and the resounding response will be:

‘Anfield – 1991’. Lloyd’s men were sixth in the Second Division, while champions Liverpool were flying at the summit of English football. Particularly on fire at that time was England winger John Barnes, arguably in the form of his life. That was, of course, until he met his match in our very own John Crumplin. Pre-match, Gulls Eye sold ‘John Crumplin – Football Genius’ T-Shirts in
Stanley Park and the 7,000 Albion fans inside the famous ground crackled in anticipation for the FA Cup fourth-round tie. The genius had Mr Barnes in his pocket all afternoon. Time and time again, the winger – trying every trick in his extensive armoury – failed to find a way past his nemisis. Ian Rush dinked the hosts in to a two-goal lead but Crumps was just as effective at
the other end having a piledriver saved by Bruce Grobbelaar before crossing for Micky Small to outjump the red defence and head back across the goal for his strike partner, John Byrne, to equalise, with a diving header, in front of the travelling masses. An unforgettable contest, the game cemented Crumplin’s cult status among the Albion support. Undoubtedly, a football genius.
