Business £4m funding is agreed for innovative drug company Jo Wadsworth @BrightonNewsJo A drug discovery company from Brighton has raised £4 million to fund research into treatments for respiratory diseases. Enterprise Therapeutics, which is based at the Sussex Innovation Centre, on the Sussex University campus at Falmer, said: “The proceeds will consolidate and accelerate the drug discovery and target identification programs initiated by Enterprise Therapeutics earlier in 2015.” The company aims at helping people with cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and severe asthma. The latest funds include £2 million from a new investor, Imperial Innovations, and an extra £400,000 from Epidarex Capital, a founding investor. Martin Gosling, from Enterprise Therapeutics, said: “We are extremely excited to have secured additional funding from experienced and enabling partners who will help us to shape and grow our company.”

Liz Roper, partner at Epidarex Capital, said: “Epidarex is delighted to be able to expand on its lead investment and to welcome Imperial Innovations as a partner in Enterprise Therapeutics’ current financing round. “The drug discovery programs initiated by Enterprise are progressing at speed and these funds will ensure key milestones are achieved more rapidly.” Rob Woodman, director of healthcare ventures at Imperial Innovations, said: “Respiratory disease remains an area of high unmet medical need with patient numbers increasing

year on year. “Enterprise Therapeutics’ strategy has the potential to deliver differentiated therapies to bring benefit to patients across a variety of indications.” Enterprise Therapeutics is an early stage drug discovery company formed in May last year. It said that its founders had significant expertise in industrial drug discovery, respiratory biology and ion channel pharmacology. It added: “The company benefits from a close working relationship with the School of Life Sciences at the University of Sussex.”

Enterprise Therapeutics was formed last year at the Sussex Innovation Centre

Fullers follows customers to Brighton A London brewery is intending on following its “customers of tomorrow” to Brighton and Hove and buying up pubs in the city. Chiswick-based Fullers has reopened one of its four city pubs, the Grand Central, following an extensive renovation that includes a secluded roof terrace. Another venue, the Nightingale Room, is opening above it - where

Grand Central has had a big renovation

the Nightingale Theatre once had its home - and will also host performances. The re-opening comes as Simon Emeny, chief executive of Fullers, says it is intending on increasing its portfolio in places such as Brighton and Hove because Londoners are pushed out of the capital by soaring property prices. Propel, an industry newsletter, quoted Mr Emeny, speaking at a London conference: “London has become the property hotspot of Europe. We see a gradual movement for the next generation, who will be forced to buy their first properties outside London. “This is driving our acquisitions programme...This is where our customers of tomorrow are choosing to move to, to commute into London. It’s very important that they retain an access to the Fuller’s brand.” The Grand Central was bought from Enterprise Inns in 2011. The company also owns the Basketmakers, the Prestonville, and the Charles Napier.

Meanwhile, Enterprise - which has sold off several Brighton pubs for housing in recent years - says it will continue to offload hundreds of pubs. It will, however, also convert the leases of 1,000 of its UK properties to free-of-tie. Some of the first of these, announced this week, are five Brighton pubs leased to the Laine Pub Company, including the Mash Tun. Gary Pettet, the Laine Pub Company’s chairman, said: “We have been talking to Enterprise about this for a couple of years. They are always ready to listen and have proven themselves to be flexible in helping us reach our objective to operate a free-oftie estate.” Enterprise also says it will convert about 800 pubs from leased to managed, using three business models: a friends-andfamily pub, where about half the income comes from wet sales; a meeting-place pub, where about 70% comes from drinks; and a community hub, where up to 90% comes from drinks.

Long-serving Rachel Clark has been the driving force behind the campaign to restore the West Pier, then to build the Brighton i360. Years of hard work and stamina looked like paying off, with funding lined up, when the derelict pier was set alight by an arsonist. She showed enterprise, patience, and sheer determination to start again from scratch. The Brighton i360 is a monument to her efforts.

A former news editor of the Press Association, Tim Cobb set up Cobb PR in 1995, since when it has become a high-profile, multi-awardwinning PR agency - working predominantly with Sussexbased companies - with offices in Brighton and Eastbourne. For eight years, Geraldine Hoban has held senior positions in commissioning health services in Brighton and Hove. She took the helm at the Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) four years ago. She has played a key role in leading the NHS locally through huge change. Although the CCG has a relatively modest number of staff, its budget is more than ÂŁ300 million a year.

For many reasons, Mike Holland is one of the bestknown figures in the city. He arrived in Brighton as an unemployed 18-yearold, straight out of the Merchant Navy. By 21, he was overseeing housebuilding and undertaking his own developments. His passion for the city led him to embark on saving the British Engineerium in Hove; he has also been responsible for the restoration of Stanmer House.

Brighton and Hove Albion appointed Chris Hughton, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Republic of Ireland defender, as first-team manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract in December last year. Mr Hughton, 56 is a former Newcastle United, Birmingham City, and Norwich City manager. The Labour result in Hove at the general election was remarkable. Peter Kyle had won Labour's nomination, in an "open" selection, after beating 15 other men - including Simon Burgess, the favourite. Well-funded by donations from non-Labour donors, Mr Kyle has since apologised for Labour, for letting a lot of people down, and said many election battles were with his party's members.

Since the general election, Mr Kirby has been promoted to a government whip.

The Brighton and Hove Local Government Unison branch has more than 4,000 members, making it one of the biggest branches in the southeast. Many are employed by Brighton and Hove City Council, but the branch also represents members working in the city’s large community and voluntary sector, further and higher education, and some outsourced and agency services. A Green councillor for Brunswick and Adelaide since 2011 - and a thorn in the side of Jason Kitcat, his predecessor as convenor Councillor Mac Cafferty will have a big influence in the next four years, even though he is convenor (not leader) of the smallest group on the council. As a former well-respected planning committee chair, his voice now as Green planning spokesperson will be listened to.

Before taking over as general manager of Hotel du Vin Brighton in 2013, Simon Maguire had a track record of success in management roles at Hotel du Vin Tunbridge Wells, The Atlantic Hotel in St Brelade, Jersey, and at the five-star Covent Garden Hotel. Mr Maguire has helped raise ÂŁ7,000 for charity by holding events and running the Brighton Half-marathon. He is also a patron of the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival.

As general manager of Brighton Pier - formerly known as Palace Pier - Anne Martin manages the largest free-entry tourist attraction in the country. She has held the position since January 2004, before which she was operations director for Bourne Leisure, managing a group of holiday parks and responsible for all park entertainments programmes and for all retail shops on 57 parks.

In charge of a citywide network of 14 libraries sits Sally McMahon. Despite harsh financial circumstances, Brighton and Hove is fortunate that none of its libraries each at the heart of its local community - has closed. It is thanks to Ms McMahon and her team that Jubilee Library is the best-performing library in the region and the secondmost-popular library in the country - with one million visits a year.

Nobody needs to be reminded of the importance of Cityclean - and the need for its services to be effective. There is no doubt councillors will continue to talk rubbish (and recycling) for many years to come. Mike Moon manages the daily operational service, ensuring all of Cityclean staff are able to work safely and efficiently. He also seeks to ensure a valuefor-money service, working closely with local action groups and councillors to resolve any operational issues.

Bonett’s

Cycling 1000 miles to Help Brighton’s

Homeless People Myself, Paul Bonett and Jim Stevenson are taking on a crazy challenge to raise money for First Base Day Centre in Brighton.

Starting from North Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands on Monday 1 June 2015, we will cycle through Scotland, England and France to raise money for a cause close to my heart. Along the way I will also be playing eight rounds of charity golf and taking Aikido classes, raising donations for BHT’s First Base Day Centre. I’d love for you to join us along the way.
