Egyptian-cotton sheets and the injustices of poverty Andy Winter @AndyWinterBHT

I’ve been asking people what they considered to be the opposite of poverty. The best answer I’ve received is “justice”. Michael Gove, the Justice Secretary, this week gave a speech in which he said that the “creaking and outdated” justice system is failing society’s poorest. He said the best legal provision was the preserve of the wealthy, while victims of crime are “badly” let down; he is seeking a £700m investment in the courts to make better use of technology and speed up trial procedures. The point has been made many times since his speech that cuts to legal aid has widened that divide. It is not just the victims of crime that are being badly let down. So too are those in debt, those being failed by the Benefits Agency, and those in poor-quality housing. Early intervention to prevent homelessness is also denied to many, which ultimately results in more costly court appearances that could be avoided.

But it is Mr Gove’s first big outing since becoming the Justice Secretary that reminded me of something else, what he regards as household necessities. The Telegraph reported on May 11 2009: “Over a five-month period between December 2005, and April 2006, he spent more than £7,000 on the semi-detached house, which Mr Gove, 41, and his wife Sarah Vine, a journalist, bought for £430,000 in 2002. Around a third of the money was spent at Oka, an upmarket interior design company established by Lady Annabel Astor, Mr Cameron’s mother-in-law. “Mr Gove bought a £331 Chinon armchair from there, as well as a Manchu cabinet for £493 and a pair of elephant lamps for £134,50. He also claimed for a £750 Loire table – although the Commons’ authorities only allowed him to claim £600 – a birch Camargue chair worth £432 and a birdcage coffee table for £238.50. ‘‘Other claims in the five-month period included Egyptian cotton sheets from the White Company, a £454 dishwasher, a £639 range cooker, a £702 fridge freezer and a £19.99 Kenwood toaster. Mr Gove also charged the taxpayer for eight coffee spoons and cake forks, worth £5.95 each, four breakfast knives

and a woven door mat worth £30. A claim for new patio furniture worth £219, including a four-seater bistro dining set, was turned down by Commons officials.” By contrast, I thought I would repeat something I was told by a colleague: “A local charity was delivering beds and mattresses to a woman for her and her children who had just been placed in accommodation. The woman was in floods of tears as the beds were delivered and having delivered

them and put them in the rooms, the worker from the charity asked the woman if everything was OK, had they done something wrong. “Her response: ‘You brought pillows and duvets, I was only expecting bed frames and mattresses. Having pillows and duvets means I will be able to tuck my children in tonight when they go to bed’.” Exactly how much is a starter pack of real necessities? The starter pack is approximately £60.

A starter pack with three beds, cooker, fridge-freezer, bedding, the whole kit and caboodle to make a house a home for a family is just over £800. A relatively small amount of money makes a huge differences to the lives of people and children. They need the basics, not Egyptiancotton sheets, coffee tables, and cake forks. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Aaron Smith feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Brighton, Hove & the surrounding areas

and Aaron is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and

family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

in newspapers other than The Guardian, as well as online. Ms Rowlands has caused controversy in recent months after Lewes District Council announced sites earmarked for 415 new homes. The sites across the council area will be developed in partnership with Karis Developments, Southern Housing Group, and Conran and Partners. Karis Developments is run by Josh Arghiros, a millionaire property developer who gave £10,000 to Mr Kyle’s election campaign – even though he is not a Labour Party supporter.

When Brighton & Hove Independent revealed the donation in April last year, Mr Arghiros said he had previously been “quite close” to Labour Party councillors, but that he no longer envisaged developing projects in Brighton and Hove: “Not until they get a grip and get some leadership. It’s not a city you can do business in.” In regards to Ms Rowlands, a Lewes District Council spokesperson said: “As far as she is aware, the Brighton and Hove vacancy has not been Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove, was quick to give his views to the BBC advertised yet.”

Crescent, Worthing (1825–9). He was also responsible for Oriental Place and Sillwood Place, the Royal Newburgh Assembly Rooms, 1 St Margaret’s Place, and the Royal Albion Hotel. Oriental Place and Sillwood Place are what remain of an ambitious scheme that never materialised because the sponsor’s money ran out. This would have comprised an Oriental-style garden with a tall, steam-heated glasshouse, a library, museum and school, all surrounded by high-class houses. Unlike the comparatively short-lived partnership between Wilds and Busby, which ended acrimoniously – Wilds pulled out of the Brunswick Town development on the very day that the building agreement was signed in November 1824 – the partnership between Wilds father and son lasted from about 1806 to 1823. Wilds continued to work in Brighton and elsewhere. His last work in Brighton was the Victoria Fountain, Old Steine, in 1845.

Wilds’ recreational activity was archery, and later in his life he experimented in other areas: he invented a new way of cleaning chimneys and proposed a breakwater to protect Brighton’s coastline. In 1831 he became high commissioner of Hove and helped prepare the local petition in favour of the Reform Bill. He also served as a Brighton commissioner from 1845 to 1848 (as his father had been earlier). The commissioners asked him to plant elm trees along the road to Brighton Race Course, which became Elm Grove. He moved to Shoreham, where he died. William IV (1765–1837) MONARCH

Trio of new faces bring quality to the Albion – on and off the field The Albion Roar Alan Wares @albionroar The grizzling can stop. Albion have signed a player. Experienced defender Liam Rosenior has arrived in a threeyear deal on a free transfer. Hull City fans are not happy. One Tweeter went as far as to say he is just as unhappy as when John Prescott was applauded by Brighton fans at Withdean. Liam’s record against Brighton is mildly impressive, if a little boring. In three matches (all for Hull City) we have never scored. Two 0-0 draws and a 1-0 defeat. Anyway, a warm welcome Liam. Additionally, we welcome back Ben Roberts as the club’s goalkeeping coach. Tune into Radio Reverb, 97.2FM, online at www.radioreverb.com, or via the podcast on iTunes and www.albionroar.co.uk. The show is brought to you in association with www.oldfootballshirts.com

Bradley Stratton @BradStrat The new arrivals at the Albion earlier this week were like the proverbial buses – you wait a while for one, then three come along at once! Former Hull City defender Liam Rosenior has signed a three-year deal, and joins on a free transfer after leaving the Tigers at the end of last season after five years on Humberside. A player with years of top-flight, the 30-year-old still has plenty to offer, and his versatility will be a huge positive for the Seagulls. The former England under-21 international plays primarily at right back, but can also operate on the left, which has been a troublesome position at the Albion for a number of years. Albion also announced the arrival of Israeli striker Tomer Hemed, who joins from Spanish outfit Almeria, the same side they signed Leonardo Ulloa from twoand-a-half years ago. The 28-year-

old scored eight times in 26 La Liga appearances last season, and could provide the answer to Abion’s goalscoring problems if he settles in as well as Ulloa did. The position of goalkeeping coach – left vacant after the departure of Antti Niemi – has also been filled, with former Albion custodian Ben Roberts

returning to the club. Michel Kuipers is regarded by most as the quintessential Albion ‘keeper of the Withdean era, but for many Roberts was the best. His shot stopping and performances in the League One play-off winning campaign of 2003/04 putting him in high regard amongst the support.

However, a recurring back injury forced him into retirement in 2005, aged 29, and he eventually moved into coaching. Roberts previously held a similar role at Charlton, and the fact many of their supporters are disappointed he is leaving suggests he has done a good job. Welcome back, Ben.

And Smith did score, and score, and score Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion Imagine Jermain Defoe signing for Crawley Town in League Two, the fourth tier of the English professional game? Or perhaps Peter Crouch putting pen to paper at Newport County, in the same division? It would never happen would it? Not in a million years. So, picture the furore caused at the Goldstone Ground in 1964 when boss Archie Macaulay signed Bobby Smith, an England international – from First Division Tottenham Hotspur – for Fourth Division Albion! The striker had made his desire to leave north London clear after falling out with manager Bill Nicholson, who had decided to drop the burly striker. Their relationship was unsalvageable and the scorer of over 200 goals for Chelsea and Spurs was listed for just £5,000, over £100,000 less than the record fee at the time. Albion chairman Eric

Courtney-King announced his ambitions pre-seaso,, when Norman Wisdom also joined the board. In the local press, he suggested how important the fans are, highlighting that the club’s average crowd was just under 10,000. Smith’s record was outstanding and ten clubs battled the Albion for his coveted signature. He’d scored in successive FA Cup finals – in 1961 to complete the first double of the 20th century – and lifted the UEFA Cup in 1963. He also netted an impressive 13 times in just 15 England appearances. Known gambler Smith arrived at Brighton station to meet Macaulay but strolled straight past him to shake the hand of his local bookmaker friend, George Gunn. Rumours abounded that the player had only agreed to come to the south coast because Gunn had cleared his gambling debts. We’ll probably never know but no-one seemed to care as the prolific hitman opened his Albion account with a brace on his debut at home to Barrow

Goal machine Bobby Smith finds the target yet again (Photograph: Brighton and Hove Albion)

– in front of 20,058 fans in Hove! In what turned out to be a magnificent season, Smith scored 20 goals in just 33 appearances, just one behind leading marksman Wally Gould. Albion stormed to the Fourth Division title, remaining unbeaten at home the entire campaign.

Macaulay’s men played with an attacking swagger and the Sussex public responded by flocking to the Goldstone in their thousands, averaging over 17,000 a game – in the Fourth Division. In a season of highlights Macaulay remarked, regarding a train trip back from Torquay

United in February; “One stop was followed by another, and another, and another. To say that staff and players of Brighton & Hove Albion were sloshed would be an understatement. We were all very nearly paralysed.” Just goes to show how a new signing can revitalise an entire club, not just on the pitch…
