Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Aaron Smith feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just
about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Brighton, Hove & the surrounding areas
and Aaron is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and
family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Plans for 32 homes on a rundown site highlight questions that need answers Plans to develop the rundown site of two Victorian villas in extensive grounds at 251-253 Preston Road, Brighton, will soon be considered by city councillors. Southern Housing Group wants to create 32 homes - 25 apartments and seven houses, 40% of them “affordable” - on the site of a former children’s home and resource centre at the corner of Clermont Road. The plans - drawn up by Yelo Architects, the leading Brighton-based firm - include a sensitive refurbishment of the villas and landscaping designed by an award-winning landscape architect. The two four-storey villas, connected by a modern two-storey link, have been empty and neglected since December 2012. With planning officers likely to recommend refusal of planning permission, SELMA MONTFORD, founder of the Brighton Society, explains why she supports the plans and highlights how planning and development can not only support, but also stifle responsible growth in the city. Ms Montford, who lives nearby, examines how what is a small area lacks community and needs more quality family and affordable housing. She concludes the Southern Housing Group plans are a good example of an approach the council should be supporting. What got you to the point now where you’re so influential and so involved in matters of development? Selma Montford: It was in about 1973, in Preston Road, there was a proposal in the grounds of a convent to build flats. We had no objection to flats. When I say we, at that time it was just a group of residents. We had no objection to flats being built there, but the way they were actually arranged meant there would be large-scale culling of mature trees, which were beautiful. So what we did was move the blocks of flats around on the site and managed to preserve about 95% of the trees. It was so ridiculous, to think the architects just plonked these blocks of flats down without any thought of a more acceptable arrangement. That’s what started this off. This group of people then formed “The Preston Society” as it was called at that time. Trees are something that are featured in the development plans for 251-253 Preston Road. Have trees and wildlife always been important to you? Selma Montford: There are lots of
particular wildlife and in this area of Brighton, it is unusual in that we have got a wonderful collection of trees. Most of Brighton is fairly treeless so it is really important that we look after our trees because it is very much part of our townscape. With regards to Southern Housing Group’s proposed development, I’m very supportive of the scheme and welcome the positive way it has been styled and designed. It’s a badly-needed development in an area that could really benefit from a greater sense of community. You have been sympathetic to some developments that have embraced modern techniques and design as well, haven’t you?
An artist’s impression of the finished Clermont Road scheme
possible. As you probably know, the city plan has got to produce 251-253 Preston Road - a children’s home and resource centre - has been empty since 2012 tens of thousands of new houses. We’ve just got to find the best ways of doing that, making not only good looking buildings, but also buildings that are going to produce friendly townscapes or areas. I am beginning to become very interested in what makes an area friendly, in that people talk to each other; they don’t now. It works in some streets but who are comfortably housed it doesn’t work in other streets have got no idea of the conditions and we need to analyse why that some people are having to live is and be careful that we achieve in. I’m sorry to say this, but a lot of landlords are irresponsible in that along with new housing. the sense that they are letting We are looking at lots of buildings that are not really fit for redevelopment and development human habitation. Personally, I in the city, using brownfield sites think there needs to be a lot more as much as possible to try to control. I think that all dwellings protect the green belt. What’s that are let by private landlords necessarily always visit each your take on shared housing and should be inspected. other, but if they meet each other affordable housing? Sites like 251-253 Preston Road in the street they talk to each other. I think that’s something we Selma Montford: There’s a huge are needed then? should think very carefully about need, absolutely huge. People Selma Montford: There’s a huge need for it, absolutely huge.
I’m very supportive of the scheme and welcome the positive way it has been styled and designed. It’s a badlyneeded development”
Selma Montford: I believe in change for the better, not change for its own sake. I think we have to accept that we are going to have to build more houses and flats, because we have a chronic housing shortage. Too many people think that what we’ve got is very nice, which much of it is, and therefore we should not add to it. It isn’t
Across the country, we’ve got to provide up to three million homes. How do you think we’re going to get there locally?
Proposals by Yelo Architects include the sensitive refurbishment of the existing Victorian villas and construction of a new apartment block and seven family houses designed to complement the existing villas
Selma Montford: It’s very difficult. I don’t know quite what happened. I tend to blame the banks. There are quite a few sites in Brighton that have planning permission for housing, and nothing happens. The council, I think, should do a survey of all these sites and should find out exactly why they are not being progressed. You’ll notice there is a lot of student housing being proposed - and the reasons for that is that the banks like student housing.

5 John benefited from an AITC health coach after suffering chest pains: “I am really happy to have had my coach guiding me during what was a difficult time. He helped me understand how to become a healthier person.”
6 Yonas escaped civil war in Eritrea and joined AITC’s Opt Into programme aimed at helping teenagers struggling at school or not in employment: “The course has helped motivate me and my coaches support me 100%.”
7 Nicola is a breast cancer survivor who volunteers with AITC’s cancer
awareness campaign: “AITC are an amazing bunch of people. Together we are spreading the very important word on early detection.”
8 Arlo used to only play football on the X-Box. Now he represents the Albion. His mum said: “Money shouldn’t make the difference between being able to play sport or not, but it does if you have a disability.”
9 Kieran was often left out of PE at school because of his disability: “All my
experiences with AITC have given me the confidence to not only try and play sports but also share my knowledge to teach others.”
10 AITC has helped deputy headteacher Alan inspire his football loving pupils to improve their maths: “AITC has proven to be a real success.”
11 Young James has seen his confidence come on leaps and bounds since starting to join in with AITC sessions.
courses aimed at tackling prejudice. In the last 12 months, 1,200 people have completed disabilityawareness training put on by AITC. While I Can, We Can is a great example of the positive work AITC does in the community, it is far from the only shining light. One programme which has proved successful this year and which has virtually nothing to do with football - has been Code Girls. With schools open about the fact subscription to computer-related GCSE courses is often dominated by boys,
AITC’s education team design a four-week, girls-only course showcasing an array of fun information technology-related pursuits - including building apps and building computers from scratch. The programme is increasingly popular with local schools. Walking football, mental health awareness schemes, free fitness classes at the stadium, football Zumba sessions, wellbeing programmes, and more clubs and teams than could fit on a football pitch - AITC offers them all. And, with the charity
celebrating 25 years of working with the community this coming season, there is much more in the pipeline. Mr Edwards added: “During those 25 years, we’ve worked with communities in a unique way, invested more than £40million and supported tens of thousands of people of all ages. “In every case we have given people the chance to take part in, and enjoy, activities that that may have thought were out of their reach. “We want to build on that success.”

Business Guevara’s P2P model promises revolution in insurance industry Revolutionary by name; revolutionary by nature. Guevara is an innovative digital start-up that has deliberately chosen Brighton as its base, from which it aims at disrupting the way buy insurance. Using what is known as a “peopleto-people” model, Guevara provides a platform for groups to pool their premiums together online. The group then uses that money to pay for any claims the group makes throughout the year. Any money they do not use stays with the group until it is needed. The system is similar to that used by large companies with fleets of vehicles. With Guevara’s
new platform, it will be available to individuals for the first time. The Guevara team has identified Brighton as the ideal home for this new approach; it has the highest density of digital companies in the United Kingdom, with more than three times the national average, and the highest number of start-ups per head of population outside of London. The founders have also noted that Brighton and Hove ranks the highest in the UK for the number of tweets with a positive sentiment, with a sentiment score of 88 - compared with the nationwide average of 78. This, they suggest, makes
Brightonians one of the happiest online communities in the country. Working from their Brighton office, the Guevara team is completely focused on finding the right groups and communities from across the city. They have locked all other parts of the country out of their site, so only local residents can gain access and join. Rich Philip, a co-founder, said: “The people of Brighton aren’t the same as everyone else. They don’t sit around and wait for change. They create it themselves. “We’re seriously excited to be set up in Brighton. We’ll be at events around the city all summer, meeting different communities and finding the perfect groups to join our platform. Brighton is famed for its collaborative attitude, but the strength of the digital scene is also massive for us. With the Digital Catapult Centre, Field BTN, and the Brighton Digital Festival around the corner, it’s an exciting time for the city. We can’t wait to be a part of it.”

New employee benefits to offer more flexibility for all As summer shines over Brighton and Hove, swapping the office for the beach looks more and more appealing. Over the last year decisions have been made that advocate a more adjustable and less traditional approach to the Monday – Friday, 9-5 working week. From June last year, the right to request flexible working was extended from just parents with children under 17 (18 if disabled) to allow all employees with more than 26 weeks service the right to request a malleable work schedule. When the new rules came into force 66% of employees said they would be interested in flexible working opportunities yet 75% were unaware that they could soon apply for them. If you wish to request flexible working from your employer you must write to your employer with the details of how you wish to change your current work pattern and your employer must follow a statutory procedure and make a decision within 3 months of the request. A flexible working request can only be rejected if it breaches any of eight ‘business reasons’. The reasons for rejection can be that
the company cannot afford the cost or there are not sufficient resources to reorganise work or meet customer demand. As well as flexible working, from April this year Shared Parental Leave was made available to all new parents. This means that the 52 weeks of parental leave can be split however the parents wish. Either one taking time off whilst the other works, or together. The only stipulation is that a plan be submitted to their employers in advanced. Research into flexible working suggests that it boosts productivity and can even lower costs for the employer. A study
by pollsters Ipsos MORI found that 63% of managers reported growth of revenue directly linked to flexible working practices. Quartz provides a fully managed payroll and auto enrolment service which can take into account flexible working and variable hours. For more information, visit: www.QuartzPayroll.co.uk

The City Plan Part One was submitted to Government in June 2013 and is currently under examination by an independent Planning Inspector appointed by the Government to consider the ‘soundness’ of the Plan. The Inspector held a series of hearing sessions in October 2013. In response to the Inspector’s further Matters and Issues (published April 2015) the City Council is proposing a number of further changes or ‘main modifications’ to the submitted City Plan Part One to address her concerns. The Inspector has asked the City Council to undertake public consultation on these further proposed changes. The further proposed changes are focused on ensuring the City Plan is consistent with recent changes in national policy and reflect the updated objectively assessed housing need figure. The Schedule of Further Proposed Modifications (which includes other proposed further changes resulting from general updates, corrections and responses to consultation at the proposed modification stage) and supporting documents can be viewed on the Council’s website at: http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/ planning/local-development-framework/cityplan-consultation The documents can also be viewed at the Customer Services Centres at Bartholomew House, Brighton and Hove Town Hall, Hove as well as Jubilee Library, Hove Library and Portslade Library during normal opening hours. Comments can also be made on the Council’s supporting documents published with the further proposed modifications. Guidance on making your representation is also available. How to comment: Public consultation starts Monday 29 June 2015 until 5.00pm Monday 10 August 2015. Comments can be made: Online: via the Council’s Consultation Portal http://consult.brighton-hove.gov.uk/portal Email: ldf@brighton-hove.gov.uk Post: Planning Policy, BHCC, King's House, Grand Avenue, Hove, BN3 2LS. The representations will be considered by the Planning Inspector conducting the examination. Please note: Comments must be made no later than 5.00pm Monday 10 August 2015. Representations at this stage can only be made on the further proposed modifications, and not on the other parts of the Submission City Plan Part One. 29 June 2015 Rob Fraser, Acting Head of City Planning & Development, King's House BN3 2LS
