City’s MPs tell rail minister urgent action is needed on ‘this failing train service’ Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

Four Sussex MPs had a ‘frank discussion’ with the new rail minister yesterday (Thursday) over the ever-increasing chaos on the railways. And the rail minister Paul Maynard told MPs that an announcement on passenger compensation was ‘imminent’ and that it ‘needs to reflect what people have gone through’. This comes after commuters were locked out of Brighton station by police on Tuesday evening in response serious overcrowding on the

platforms. And on the hottest dayoftheyear(Tuesday),there were cases of air conditioning failing on packed commuter trains. Mr Maynard was pressed to act by Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, and Peter Kyle, MP for Hove. They were joined by fellow Sussex MPs Sir Nicholas Soames and Nick Herbert. Mr Kyle said the MPs had a ‘free and frank’ discussion with the new rail minister. Ms Lucas said: “This is an emergency situation which requires an urgent response. I’m seriously worried that someone could be injured or worse.

“The horrendous situation at Brighton Station was a new low for this failing train service. It’s time for real action to address the multiple problems with this service.” She added that passengers who had been delayed more than 15 minutes should be compensated. On the new rail minister, Ms Lucas said: “He’s new to the job and seems committed to making things better. “In the coming days we will see if his government’s actions match his words – and if they take this crisis as seriously as they should.” SEE PAGES 3, 12 AND 13

‘If you can’t run a service, if you can’t do your job, then go’ Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

Pressure is mounting on the government to strip Govia Thameslink of its franchise to run Southern trains. The latest in a string of passenger protests is planned at Brighton station on August 13 from 1.30pm until 5pm, showing the continuing discontent by commuters. It is planned by a group called ‘Southern Customers Stand Together’ on Facebook - and it’s just one of many groups campaigning for a better service. Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, has been calling for the service to be taken back into public ownership. And last night, Warren Morgan, leader of the city council, joined the calls to strip Govia Thameslink of its franchise at Full Council.

He said: “What we have seen in recent weeks and recent days is utterly, totally unacceptable in a modern European country. Trains cancelled over and over again, commuters and tourists jammed into carriages with no air conditioning. Thousands shut out of our railway station, hundreds more crammed inside on one of the hottest days of the year. This cannot continue. “I say to Govia Thameslink, if this is some game with the unions, you passengers, your customers are suffering. Stop it now. If you can’t run a service, if you can’t do your job, then go. “I say to the government, to whoever is the rail minister now, to the Transport Secretary, get off your backsides and do something. Do your job and intervene. Strip Govia Thameslink Rail of their franchise. “Either give the service

Lane closures on seafront road Brighton’s seafront road is set to be more congested than usual with additional lane closures next week. On top of the work on Shelter Hall, which has been causing disruption to drivers for months, there will also be lane closures at the i360, where internet cabling will be installedfor the attraction. Brighton and Hove City Council said on Monday, July 25, both outside lanes of the A259 will be closed opposite

the viewing tower, and on Tuesday the inside lanes will be closed. On Wednesday there will be works to the footways on both sides of the road, and the site should be cleared on Thursday. The council said drivers should expect delays and seek an alternative route. Eleanor Harris, CEO of British Airways i360, said: “This is crucial work to connect fibre optics for fast broadband to the beach

Market move for RadioReverb Brighton-based not-for-profit radio station RadioReverb is to move into Brighton Open Market on London Road. The radio station’s first live broadcast from its new home in the market will be on September 1. Tracey Allen, director of the station, said: “RadioReverb is all about the community and we feel that the Open Market is right at the heart of that vibrant and eclectic side of the city. We cannot wait to start broadcasting from our new space in the market.”

Joining together against hate

‘This is about saving lives’ - city council launches homeless plan Brighton and Hove City Council joined with partners from across the city to pledge commitment to the Rough Sleeping Strategy 2016. Councillor Clare Moonan, lead member for rough sleeping, said: “The street is a very vulnerable place to be and the average age of death for a person rough sleeping is just 47 years old. We know we need to work together to help people living rough in the city to improve their circumstances. We already have a good foundation of professional organisations linking up to provide vital support. This strategy builds on the positive work

Our city’s economy is at risk if you do nothing. Act now.” See pages 12 and 13 for more on rail disruption.

At last night’s Full Council, leader Warren Morgan put forward a joint motion with the leaders of the Green and Conservative Groups, against hate crime in the city. He said: “Hate crime and bigotry have no place in Brighton and Hove, prejudice and intolerance is not part of who we are as a city and as a community.”

College head bows out at the very top Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BrightonIndy

It’s been 18 years since Chris Thomson was appointed principal at BHASVIC, and he’s taken it from ‘just better than satisfactory’ to one of the best sixth forms in the country. With its most recent Ofsted inspection judging BHASVIC outstanding, Mr Thomson is now set to retire. When asked what’s next, Mr Thomson said he was hoping to apply the skills he has learned into a different role - although he wants to squeeze some travelling in too. Just like the 18-year-olds who are leaving BHASVIC this summer, Mr Thomson said, “I am launching myself into the big wide world.” “It is a very exciting prospect,” he said. “I have got all the excitement of an 18-year-old starting out, but none of the anxiety.” When Mr Thomson took the helm of the sixth form in

Chris Thomson

1998, it had 1,049 students. Now it has more than 2,500, with students travelling from as far as Eastbourne and Portsmouth. The success of the college under his leadership is clear. Last year, BHASVIC was the only sixth form to be named in the top three colleges for both value-added at A-level and average points score per A-level entry. Mr Thomson said the success was ‘absolutely a whole college effort’ and down to ‘putting the students first’. He said he allows his

staff to be creative, and gives them the freedom to come up with ideas on new teaching methods. Employing the best staff, he said, was only half the battle - the rest is giving them creative freedom. He likened it to Iceland’s Euro 2016 performance, in comparison to England’s. “On the England team, you might find the team is worth more than £100m – nine figures. I think the Icelandic team might be worth around six figures. There is a huge difference between the two. “If you’re not careful you end up with 11 star players and you put them together and it doesn’t work. But if you take 11 players that can work as a team, they are working for each other.” With Mr Thomson looking for a new challenge, perhaps he should consider the job as England’s next manager. William Baldwin, of Godalming College, will take on the job of principal at BHASVIC.

Warning issued to ambulance service Sussex’s ambulance service has been issued with a warning notice by health regulators after an inspection in May. Bosses at South East Coast Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) said they needed to ‘restore public confidence and faith in our service’ after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) found a ‘culture of bullying and harassment’, issues with the computer dispatch system, and safeguarding. Both SECAmb’s chairman and chief executive resigned earlier this year after the

fallout from a controversial pilot which delayed ambulances for some patients in the winter of 2014/15, while the trust also admitted last month it was ‘failing to reach some patients as quickly as it would like’ due to rising demand, delays at hospitals, and staff shortages. The CQC’s warning notice gives SECAmb until September to address the immediate concerns, including processes ‘not operating effectively’, and the need to adequately manage NHS 111 calls in a timely manner.

New school break for cheaper holidays Brighton and Hove City Council has revealed the date of its new half term, to make holidays cheaper for families. The traditional one-week school break in October will nowbeextendedtoafortnight. The change will come in for the 2017/18 academic year, making the new break stretch from October 16 to October 27. The changes were designed to allow families more flexibility to take excursions or holidays outside of the peak summer holiday period.

Cllr Tom Bewick, chair of the children, young people and skills committee, said: “The introduction of a new week’s holiday in term time is a positive step and I hope addresses the behaviour of travel companies who whack up prices.” The council added that pupils will not miss out on teaching days, as slight adjustments to the start and finish of the three main terms will compensate for the additional holiday.

Robert Nemeth had been watching the fireworks in Nice, before 84 people were killed in a terrorist attack last Thursday. The Brighton and Hove city councillor was on holiday with his partner and two friends, and the group was standing just a stone’s throw away from where the tragedy happened. “It was certainly a strange experience,” said Cllr Nemeth. “We were very close to it. It happened in the spot where we were going to stand and where we had been standing in the day, but our dinner was delayed so we were late for the fireworks. “It was very crowded, and there were lots of police around, so it was a seemingly safe place. “Then lots of people started walking away and it was not until we were a few blocks away, there was a

‘The battle for Labour’s soul’ Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

“Brighton and Hove is at the epicentre of the fight for the soul of the Labour Party.” Those were the words of Greg Hadfield, who was the secretary of the Brighton, Hove and District Labour Party – for four days – before the branch was suspended and its committee election results annulled. The ‘fight’ he refers to is that between the ‘left’ and the ‘right’ of the Labour Party, which is playing out on a national and local stage. In Brighton and Hove, it all started at the branch’s AGM on Saturday, July 9, where members voted for the executive board to lead the local party. Jeremy Corbyn supporters were elected into each and every role. ButonThursdayafternoon the branch was suspended by Labour’s national executive

committee (NEC), after alleged ‘abusive behaviour’, concern about the ballots, and the safety of members. It added that the branch was suspended and election results were annulled – it would have to be re-run after the national leadership election, a battle between beleaguered leader Jeremy Corbyn, and Owen Smith. Mr Hadfield, a Corbyn supporter who has been vocal on social media about the suspension, said: “We are not going to be cowed by such undemocratic and inexplicable intervention.” Warren Morgan, the Labour leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, and Peter Kyle, MP for Hove, are vocal critics of their party leader Jeremy Corbyn. Cllr Morgan issued a robust statement after the local party election - saying the new executive committee could not deselect councillors, and ‘only the

Kevin Allen

voters decide who is elected in 2019’. Mr Kyle, said: “I just want people to realise that this is about who sits on the local Labour Party’s organising committee. “People are not talking about this over their breakfast tables and in the bars and clubs of Brighton and Hove on a Friday night. “Certain people seem to think they are like Jason Bourne uncovering a conspiracy. This is simply about the local Labour Party committee and how we can make sure that internal elections are run in a fit and proper way.” But there’s certainly a split in the party, locally and nationally. Last night, Kevin Allen, a Labour city councillor, was set to leave his colleagues at Full Council to attend a meeting of Momentum, the Corbynsupporting faction of Labour. Read his article below. advertorial

Labour councillor

Corbyn is in ascendancy, get used to it!

O

n Saturday July 9, huge numbers of Labour Party members converged on City College for the AGM of the District Labour Party. As there were far too many to fit into the hall in one go there had to be three ‘sittings’. This meant a lot of hanging around. Nobody minded. There was a great atmosphere, good-humoured, almost festive. An occasion to be proud of. Then, some days later, came the bombshell, the administrative coup suspending the party and ‘voiding’ (an ugly word for an ugly act) the results of the elections to positions on the executive. A high-handed, irrational decision based on undisclosed evidence. The elections to party officers showed Corbyn-supporting candidates winning with well over 60 per cent of the vote. The nervousness in some quarters is understandable. It’s sad, but some timorous souls really do see this as proof of a takeover by extremists and Trotskyists. Of course it’s nonsense. The great majority of Corbyn supporters simply want a more radical edge to our policies, a more determined attempt to

tackle income inequality and a cultural shift in our politics leading to a new synergy between the parliamentary party and grassroots movements for social change. Alas, all that it academic so long as the majority of Labour MPs refuse to work with Corbyn. However, once the leadership election is over I believe MPs, led by the impressive Owen Smith, will accept that Jeremy Corbyn deserves to be given a proper chance. Following the leadership election the rescheduled AGM of the local party will take place. The Corbynites will win, quite possibly even more decisively than before. This time the leader of the Labour Group should show generosity of spirit, congratulating the successful candidates and inviting them to an early meeting. I am proud to be a member of a coherent and effective Labour Group with some very talented members. But there is now bad blood between the Group and the Party. This could cause real damage. Repairing the Group/Party relationship now needs to be prioritised. But one thing is certain: Corbyn and the Corbynites are in the ascendancy. Get used to it!

Tutor takeover of journalism school Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

The teaching team at a journalism training provider in Brighton have taken over the running of the course. Five tutors who deliver the multi-media journalism courses at Brighton Journalist Works (BJW), have announced this week that they are taking the helm. It’s the first time a National Council for Training of Journalists(NCTJ)accredited course has been run by the teaching staff. Richard Lindfield, incoming BJW managing director, said: “Our aim is to continue providing the same top-class training students at Brighton Journalist Works have received over the past ten years. “We also recognize we have to equip our students with the tools to meet the challenges of journalism in a digital age.

Richard Lindfield

“Our training will combine the core, traditional skills with the future skills needed as students start out on their careers.” BJW offers a 16-week fasttrack course, the shortest in the country, together with a part-time weekend course from September to July. Both courses are accredited by the NCTJ. The new company will be launching its September courses in recently acquired

premises in central Brighton - Vantage Point, a media hub based opposite the Preston Circus fire station. It is currently based at the Sussex Innovation Centre. The new BJW training centre will be next to the offices of the Brighton & Hove Independent. Mr Lindfield said: “Vantage Point is the perfect location. It is within walking distance of the three railway stations in the city and on many of the major bus routes. “Students will be ideally placed to go out and get stories in the city centre, and we’ll be the first to know when there’s a major fire!” Paula O’Shea, departing BJW managing director, said: “The success of Journalist Works has always been largely down to our tutors; an inspirational, talented and knowledgeable bunch. We are thrilled they have decided to take over running the joint too and have assured them of our support in the future.”

Children from Brighton and Hove joined 2,500 youngsters from more than 50 schools at the Ardingly Showground this week, to discover more about where their food comes from. The visit was part of the Connect with the Countryside scheme, and children had the chance to meet farm animals and learn country crafts. Among the schools attending were Rudyard Kipling Primary School, Woodingdean, and St Mary Magdalen Primary School, Brighton.

Railway chaos may threaten city’s tourism Bex Bastable

The continuing chaos and disruption on Southern services could damage Brighton and Hove’s economy, local politicians have said. The misery for commuters came to a head on Tuesday night, when police were forced to close Brighton station following serious overcrowding. It is thought the reason behind the huge crowds was a sinkhole at Forest Hill resulting in cancellations of trains between Brighton and London Bridge, signalling failures at Gatwick, and an influx of tourists to the city

on the hottest day so far of the year. Peter Kyle, the Labour MP for Hove, joined Brighton Pavilion’s Green MP Caroline Lucas in an urgent meeting with the new rail minister Paul Maynard on Wednesday. OnthesituationatBrighton on Tuesday, Mr Kyle said: “It was totally horrendous. Both Caroline Lucas and I were in constant touch yesterday evening, We have asked for an urgent meeting with the rail minister this afternoon. “We want to impress on him that the network is so threadbare that just a couple of incidents like what we saw last night is capable of bringing the entire network into chaos. It is putting people’s well-being at risk.

“The degradation of the service over the last six months is having a direct impact on our tourism economy. “On the hottest day of the year, our city should have been seen at its best but because of the shambles by Network Rail and the impact of it on the rest of the service, they did not get to see it, or they were trapped in our city and could not get home. “There was somebody who was saying they were experiencing extreme claustrophobia, another said the air conditioning had broken down, there were stories of extreme dehydration. It just goes on and on. “Someone who works for me was stuck at Brighton station in the crush and was sending me pictures. “This is not Brighton in the 21st century. “You can’t have this number of people going through this on a daily basis.” Warren Morgan, the leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, also spoke out about last night’s train chaos, and the impact it is having on the city’s economy. He said: “Our city’s economy relies on a functioning rail service to

London, for commuter, for business and for tourism. If the current operator cannot do this, then they should be stripped of their franchise and new arrangements should be put in place by the government, as happened with the East Coast line. “Passengers should have a big say in how the service is run, perhaps through a mutually-owned company.”

British Transport Police closed Brighton railway station on Tuesday after serious overcrowding. Passengers were not being let into the station, and station staff were handing out water to those inside. Govia Thameslink, which runs the Southern franchise, said the problem was a result of ‘a signal failure at a critical point in the Gatwick area on the Brighton Mainline’, and ‘this came on top of a series of infrastructure failures across the Southern network’. It said: “The failure at Gatwick meant that the station concourse and platforms

became overcrowded - so much so that on the advice of the British Transport Police, the station management team temporarily closed the station. Crowd control measures were put in place once the station was re-opened to ensure the safety of passengers. “We will of course review how the situation at Brighton last night was handled.” The station was closed by police at around 7.30pm this evening, after the ticket barriers were shut down due to crowding on the platform. But it seems the chaos began before then. Ant Ierston lives

in Brighton, and was travelling home from Burgess Hill on a London train just after 5.30pm.

“People had to fight to get on the train,” said Ant. “It was packed. Some people were having to get off the train to get some air.” The train pulled into Brighton at 6.05pm. Ant said: “As soon as we got into Brighton it took three or four minutes to get off the train onto the platform and to the ticket barriers. So many people were trying to get on. “You couldn’t walk on the platform properly. People were pushed to the edge and it looked like they were going to fall onto the tracks.” He added: “I think everyone is at breaking point.”

Situation is just ‘downright dangerous’ says RMT chief The rail union in dispute with Govia Thameslink over changes to conductor roles has said passengers and staff are ‘being held hostage’ after the chaos at Brighton station on Tuesday night. Mick Cash, the general secretary of the RMT union, said: “The situation on GTR has now moved from chaotic to downright dangerous and the continuing attempts to blame that on the front line staff by the company bosses is outrageous. Their gross mismanagement and outright lies are disgraceful. “Passengers and staff alike are being held hostage by this failed rail operation and the silence from the new team at the Department for Transport is deafening. “There has to be urgent action to remo ve GTR and bring in Directly Operated Railways before there is a major disaster.” A Govia Thameslink spokesman said: “We

ime moves quickly in politics and I have to say that so much has happened in the last few weeks that this has really proved to be true. We have seen the country voting to leave the EU, David Cameron’s resignation and the subsequent leadership challenge which we expected to last nine weeks leading to a new Prime Minister in Number 10 within days and a subsequent sweeping reshuffle of Government Ministers. Sussex-born Theresa May has visited me in Brighton Kemptown and seen what a special place our constituency is. She is a strong and competent politician and absolutely the right person to unite and lead our country in these difficult times. I fully understand that many local people in Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven were saddened by the result of the referendum especially in view of the substantial Remain vote in Brighton and ove and the Remain win in Lewes. However, the country voted to Leave and the new government must now negotiate the best deal for Britain in leaving the EU and forge a new role for ourselves in the world. As the new Prime Minister says,

she will indeed make a success of it. She has said that she will put social reform at the heart of her government and the Cabinet appointments this week demonstrate a real drive to improve life chances for everyone and not just the privileged few. I was also pleased to have played a part in the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill and know that equal marriage has the support of the majority of my constituents in Brighton Kemptown. As MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven I was honoured last year to have been appointed to the Government Whips office. This has allowed me to be at the centre of Government and have daily contact with Ministers which has been extremely helpful in raising local issues with them. I was delighted to receive a phone call from the Prime Minister last weekend and am honoured and humbled to have been asked to take up a ministerial position as Economic Secretary to the Treasury. I will do my very best to support our Prime Minister Theresa May and her Government and continue to work hard to represent everyone in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven. I am convinced that under the leadership of our new Prime Minister, our new government will work together and will build a better Britain.

Progressives must work together post-Brexit

T

wo weeks ago Cllr Tom Bewick, the leader of the Leave campaign in Brighton and Hove, wrote a column entitled ‘No doubt we will be better off out of EU’. The timing couldn’t have been worse: the pound had just lost 10 per cent of its value, we lost our AAA creditrating, our economy had shrunk to sixth place, and some of the country’s largest businesses were making plans to leave. And if that wasn’t enough, we’d just been told that the promises made by the Leave campaign could not be kept. The worst thing about Brexit is we’re now likely to lose all the protections and benefits of being in the EU. Did Cllr Bewick mention the 28 days paid holiday we might lose? Sick pay? Pregnancy and maternity leave? Paternity leave? Anti-discrimination rules on race, sex, disability, age and sexual orientation? No, he didn’t. Nor did he mention that thanks to the EU we have cleaner beaches, better water and air quality, and protection for the environment. Two weeks ago I met with council

Ollie Sykes

finance officers and Labour and Conservative councillors to review the council’s budget and implications of Brexit. It doesn’t look good at all. The council stands to lose considerable sums: a worsening economy could lead to even greater austerity and cuts; delays to major developments could reduce expected council tax income; and the uncertain economy could reduce business investment, business rate income and threaten jobs. So what can we do about it? This is the biggest crisis in British politics in my lifetime. However it also presents the biggest opportunity I have ever witnessed too. There is a fault-line developing between progressive and regressive visions for our country. Caroline Lucas has proposed a “progressive alliance”, with progressive parties uniting around a shared vision. Let’s seize the opportunity to re-shape our country’s future; for a fair voting system, investment in public services, an economy that works for the 99 per cent not just the one per cent, and action on climate change to safeguard our future.

Short-sighted budget decisions cost us all

S

ometimes it’s the small missteps that are most revealing. At a meeting last Thursday, way down the long agenda, a council committee agreed by majority vote to sell a small piece of agricultural land and buildings belonging to Brighton and Hove Council. This decision, which seemed so innocuous in the council report, was nothing short of a huge missed opportunity to create a community food growing initiative of enormous value to the city. Our council and this Labour administration in particular aims to become a ‘co-operative council’, working with formal and informal third sector organisations to create a shared stake in society. That’s why this decision was so disappointing. The sale of this land followed a long bidding process and the interest was there from third-sector organisations to develop a plan for the land. This could have met objectives set out in a

raft of council policies on areas such as the health benefits of being outdoors, providing education opportunities about our world-class natural environment, sustainable land use and local food production. Instead, the preferred bidder will use this parcel for “horse stabling, grazing and exercising with potentially some non-commercial horticulture and smallscale animal husbandry”. The result of this is a decision with negligible short term gain and a significant missed opportunity for the city. It’s unnecessarily short-sighted and sends entirely the wrong message to the charity and voluntary sector, which we must increasingly rely on if we are to meet the funding challenges facing the council in the next few years. It’s a sad day when we can’t make a modest concession in return for creating a valued community asset. As a council, we seem to be so focused on cutting services that we don’t see the true value we are in danger of losing.

Our city shouldn’t have to rely on the sun

T

his week summer finally arrived, and with it huge crowds along our seafront, from Hove Lawns to the seafront bars of Kemp Town. Heatwaves are almost always illustrated in the media by shots of the Palace Pier and the beach, and it’s been very welcome and cheering to see the sun at last. It’s a boost to many businesses too, with tourism having been the bedrock of our local economy for over a century, as fishing declined. Driving home along the seafront this week, the pod of the British Airways i360 was gleaming in the sunshine at full height on the tower, as the finishing touches were being made to the concourse below. Like the piers before it, the i360 stands in a long tradition of tourist attractions created to bring people here from London and elsewhere. They have taken a bold and welcome step this week in ensuring that all their catering contractor staff as well as their directly employed team will be paid the Brighton and Hove Living Wage, and deserve credit for this. Our digital, creative and financial economy is thriving and growing too, but at a meeting of the Greater Brighton Economic Board this

week we recognised the threat to our economy from the very grave crisis our rail links to London face, both in terms of infrastructure investment and the clear inability of the current operator to meet basic service requirements. At our full council this week I tabled a motion with my colleague Cllr Saoirse Horan calling for urgent action to improve the service for the benefit of our economy. At the launch of our Rough Sleepers Strategy led by Cllr Clare Moonan this week,

I spoke about the wasted potential of every individual who ends up on the streets. Brighton Housing Trust’s Andy Winter reported that, despite appearances, the numbers sleeping rough is fairly static, but of course every one of them is a person, someone with an individual story. I pledged again that we will work to make sure that no-one has the need to sleep rough in Brighton and Hove by 2020; an ambitious target but one we have a duty to reach for. We need a society where everyone has the

opportunity to succeed, where all have the chance to fulfil their potential, where each person can contribute to and share in the growth and prosperity of our economy. As another Labour politician has said, it is not enough to be anti-austerity, we must be proprosperity too. Everyone aspires for better for themselves, their family and friends. Everyone wants their neighbourhood, their community to be even better. Prosperity and aspiration should be part of the language every politician uses; I make no apologies for using those terms again here. Our economy should not rely on the kind of weather we have seen this week; we should invest more in our tourist and city infrastructure. Our digital, financial and commuter economy should not be at the mercy of an under performing rail operator, but should be supported by a Government willing to intervene when the market fails the businesses that rely on it. Our greatest economic asset is our people, whether homegrown, down-from- London or here from elsewhere, and we should teach them well, train them well, and pay them well so they can all play a full and productive part in growing and strengthening Brighton and Hove for the future.

Protecting our parks from encampments

D

espite the bizarre goings-on both locally and nationally within the Labour Party, my Conservative colleagues and I remain focused on representing our residents and this of course includes holding the Administration to account by being a constructive opposition. At last week’s Policy, Resources and Growth Committee, members were asked to vote on the implementation of Public Space Protection Orders, a new additional tool handed down to local councils from government as part of the Anti-social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act to tackle unauthorised encampments in the city which so often blight our beautiful parks and open spaces. To give residents reassurance that unauthorised encampments would be able to be dealt with more quickly, avoiding the drawn-out process which is currently endured, Councillors Wealls, Janio and Ann Norman and I scrutinised the Administration on how they would ensure maximum effectiveness of the new powers. As a result of these discussions we voted in favour of the new measures as a step in the right direction; however their true effectiveness will remain to be seen. Previous to the meeting, my Conservative colleagues and I had fought strongly for the implementation of Public Space Protection Orders and to increase the number of areas to which they would be applied, and made a strong case as to why both residents and we believe further parks should be added. However, initially only 12 city parks will be included in phase one of the plans. The 12 sites are: Greenway adjacent to the railway station in the New England Quarter, Hollingbury

Park to include the car park north of the park, Lawn Memorial Cemetery and the adjacent land in Woodingdean, Preston Park, Rottingdean Recreation Ground, the seafront including the A259 from Black Rock to Hove Lagoon, Sheepcote Valley and East Brighton Park, St Helens Green, Stanmer Park, Surrenden Field, Waterhall, and Wild Park. The additional sites we had pressed to be included were: Hangleton Park, Greenleas Park, West Hove Cricket Green, Knoll Recreation Ground, Happy Valley, Saltdean Oval, 19 Acres, Ladies Mile Nature Reserve, Patcham Place, Horsdean Recreation Ground, Carden Park, Withdean Park and Braypool. My colleagues and I have been assured however that further areas will be considered under phase two of the plans. We will therefore continue to put pressure on the Administration to ensure this does happen and indeed hold the Administration to account should the further areas we have identified as needing Public Space Protection Orders become blighted by unauthorised encampments as a result of the phase one sites Orders being initiated. Nationally our new Prime Minister Theresa May and the Conservative Party are getting on with running the country and to this end I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate our local MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, Simon Kirby, for his recent appointment to the Treasury as Economic Secretary. Simon will play an important part in this forward thinking new Government which will be led very ably by Theresa May. Simon’s many years of experience in business, as a former partner in one of the major pub, restaurant and nightclub chains in the city, stands him in good stead for his new role and I wish Theresa and him every success.

Yep. It’s that time of year (Brighton grey skies, howling gales and pouring rain) but some of us are lucky enough to be going abroad, you know, that European place that we are no longer part of (sob) to lounge around on the beach. Here’s what to pack: Girl From Lace Island by Joanna Rees (Pan) a pretty perfect holiday book if I’ve ever seen one. It’s got mystery, intrigue and romance, oh, and it’s set in paradise. Enjoy. Before Lunch by Angela Thirkell (Virago) a beautiful re-print of one of my favourite authors. Dry, sardonic and witty. Digging to America by Anne Tyler (Vintage) – the author that can do no wrong. Very funny and sharply observed. Dead to Me by Lesley Pearse (Michael Joseph) Glorious and heartwarming from a master story teller. The Foodlovers Handbook by Mark Price (Ebury Press) a fascinating book that turns the spotlight on 40 popular foods. Three Sisters, Three Queens by Philippa Gregory (Simon & Schuster) if you enjoy some historical fiction, it doesn’t get any better than this. Rather be the Devil, the new John Rebus by Ian Rankin (Orion) scorchio on the beach whilst reading about the dark and damp Edinburgh. Solomon Creed by Simon Toyne (Harper) Pretty much the only thriller that you’ll need to read this year. Perfect. If you’re not going on your hols till September (and why wouldn’t you with all the kids back at school) you’re in luck. Rupert Campbell-Black is back in Mount! By Jilly Cooper - *swoon*.

Nats Spada, station manager at Platform B, said:

“For many 15 to 25-year-olds, radio lacks the vibrancy and interactivity of the social media platforms they use every day. “Radio is ready for a 21st century reboot and the possibilities are limitless.” The licences last five years and applications from stations must fulfil specific criteria, such as providing evidence of local demand for a proposed service, in order to be successful.

G

ilbert White, the naturalist, is famously associated with Selborne, just over the Hampshire border; but he knew Sussex well, staying annually with his aunt Rebecca Snooke at Ringmer, near Lewes, and there are many references to our area in his writings. In a 1767 letter, for example, discussing the mystery of where swallows go in winter, he recounts a story he heard of how “at Brighthelmstone, in Sussex, a great fragment of the chalk cliff fell down one stormy winter on the beach; and many people found swallows among the rubbish”. (Walking one November near Newhaven, he saw swallows flying, seemingly corroborating the theory they hibernated.) In 1770 he records “bustards on the wide downs near Brighthelmstone”. (These huge birds were later hunted to extinction.) Choughs “abound and breed on Beachy Head and on all the cliffs of the Sussex coast” (they too are long gone). White loved the Downs, seeing “new beauties” every time he rode “that chain of majestic mountains”. He noted the curious fact that the sheep west of the Adur had

horns, with white faces and legs, while the flocks east of the Adur were hornless, with black faces and speckled legs, the shepherds assuring him “the case has been so from time immemorial”. And he

describes how wheatears were trapped by the shepherds and “sent for sale in vast quantities to Brighthelmstone and Tunbridge; and appear at the tables of all the gentry that entertain with any degree of elegance”. He writes about the crossbills in Mrs Snooke’s pine groves, the habits of the rooks in her rookery, and the ring ousels then found all along the Downs. But some of the most memorable passages of White’s Natural History concern Mrs Snooke’s aged tortoise, Timothy (bought from a sailor in Chichester in 1740). White first mentions Timothy in 1770, noting how “when it first appears in the spring it discovers very little inclination towards food; but in the height of summer grows voracious: and then as the summer declines its appetite declines; so that for the last six weeks in autumn it hardly eats at all. Milky plants, such as lettuces, dandelions, sowthistles, are its favourite dish.” In 1772, White devotes an entire letter to Timothy, noting how in November he digs his hibernaculum under some hepaticas. “It scrapes out the ground with its fore-feet, and throws it up over its back with its hind; but the motion of its legs is

ridiculously slow, little exceeding the hour hand of a clock.” He continues: “No part of its behaviour ever struck me more than the extreme timidity it always expresses with regard to rain; for though it has a shell that would secure it against the wheel of a loaded cart, yet does it discover as much solicitude about rain as a lady dressed in all her best attire, shuffling away on the first sprinklings, and running its head upin a corner.” It made an excellent weather-glass, its behaviour of a morning indicating if it would rain later. He notes how, when Mrs Snooke came in sight, it “hobbles towards its benefactress with awkward alacrity; but remains inattentive to strangers”. White thought it odd that “such a seeming waste of longevity” should be bestowed “on a reptile that appears to relish it so little as to squander more than two-thirds of its existence in a joyless stupor”. When Mrs Snooke died in 1780, White dug Timothy out of his hepatic “dormitory”, packed him in an earthen box, and bore him away by post-chaise to Selborne, where he spent the rest of his life, outliving White himself. I say “he”: but dissection after his death in 1794 revealed Timothy to have been female all along.

A whippy fine fragrance delight

f you have hooded eyes and fail with makeup techniques, check Youtuber Alissa Ashley for tips to master your cut crease or create a cooler winged liner. Alissa uses Kat Von D products (which are switching up to allVegan formulations soon) and these are finally coming to the UK in branches of Debenhams.

I don’t obsess over American beauty mavens, but Kat Von D has very publicly ended her professional relationship with Jeffree Star, citing his inappropriate behaviour. She’s now pulling her parabenfree salmon pink lippy named after him off the shelves - meeow, meeow. A promotional film about the Melvita bee shepherding made me want to try their patented anti ageing face cream, Nectar Supreme La Creme. Royal jelly is fairly well known as a supplement and is a key

ingredient in this light but intensive formulation. The Melvita approach to bio/ organic is respectful and I’m drawn to their commitment to preserve and cultivate bee habitats. I wasn’t familiar with kniphofia nectar before, but the plant is also known as a ‘red hot poker’ and it grows in the Palmeira area of Hove. Melvita blend the kniphofia with three organic honeys in this repairing complex. The result is an Ecocert certified, ultra-light, silky cream for radiant skin that is quickly absorbed and deeply refreshing. The texture is a whippy delight with a delicate fragrance and soothing effect on the wearer, £49 for a 50ml pot. 99 percent of the total ingredients are of natural origin and 28 percent of total ingredients are from organic farming, which beats our

Lastly, we know that boxed collections are a fast way to try different products, so I was thrilled to buy a limited British Beauty Blogger compilation by Latest In Beauty which had Melvita goodies in. I’m sorry to see that this has ended, but do sign up for oneoffs from £15 or try a pick-andmix option. As ever, the newsletters are the best route to access promotions and deals. My thoughts, my experiences, my life...

W

hen I met with Brighton & Hove Indy to discuss the content of my upcoming column, I was advised against being too opinionated or mentioning subjects that are likely to cause offence to you, the readers. “Try not to be controversial and wind people up, “ they said. Well luckily for Brighton & Hove Indy I don’t have a staunch opinion on too many subjects. “I’ll probably write a lot about my hormones,” I replied. “Oh, ok, but surely not every week?’ was their response. “Well, if my hormones aren’t playing up that week, I won’t write about them” I left the meeting promising 500 words as an introduction to me and my new column. They left the meeting possibly regretting calling the meeting. I’m Jo, and I live and work here, in my home town of Brighton and Hove. I wasn’t born here, but my family moved here when I was five. That was 41 years ago, I think I have earnt my stripes and the right to call myself a Brightonian. I am a freelance hairdresser and my

Jo Fuller and a lot of lavender.

clients are a constant source of inspiration, for both my writing and my life. This column will bring together all my experiences and all the people, places and things that I love. I want to share those with you, inspire you, amuse you and bring you

insights into a life that isn’t perfect but a life that I get as much out of as I can, sometimes it’s a struggle and sometimes it’s a total joy… sound familiar? To give you a snippet into my world, I recently looked after my neighbour’s cats.

I don’t dislike animals by any stretch but I’m not sure I get why people are so in love with cats. In what world is it ok to bring someone a present of a dead mouse? This is a rubbish present. Cat world, that’s where. In what world is it ok to walk into a room, only to have the cat of the house look at you as if to say, ‘and your purpose for being on this earth and in my home, is exactly what?’ Cat world, that is where. In what world is it OK to climb on somebody’s head in the middle of the night, wake them up by licking their face, and stick your tongue in their ear because you want feeding. Cat world, that’s where. To be honest, Cat World can do one, after my recent experience, I’m not impressed. There are too many obnoxious humans in this world without offering up your home and your love to a feline that gives you dirty looks because you dared to sit on your own sofa. Well if cats wasn’t too controversial a subject, then Brighton & Hove Indy liked my 500 words and printed my column. I sincerely hope you enjoy it and if you are a cat lover, there was no intention to offend. It’s just one of the few subjects I do have a staunch opinion on.

Three new restaurants coming to the Marina

Choosing a platform for your business

Brighton Marina

Three high street restaurants are opening new premises Brighton Marina. Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK), Five Guys and MOD Pizza will both soon set up business at the marina. GBK will be the first to open on August 1 and will give away giving away 100 free cheeseburgers and burrgerflavoured rock. Laura Pettingale, GBK marketing manager, said: “We wanted to create a fun spin on a classic British seaside sweet, for all of

Brighton to try. “The GBK burger rock is the first of its kind and we couldn’t be more pleased to give it to those that know rock best, the people of Brighton.” This week Brunswick Developments, represented by international real estate advisor Savills, has let restaurant space at Marina Boardwalk in Brighton to Five Guys and MOD Pizza. The scheme forms part of the new mixed-use West Quay development at Brighton Marina, which

is due for completion this month. Five Guys and MOD Pizza have both agreed new 15year leases, with the former taking a 3,288 sq ft (305 sq m) unit at a rent of £115,080 per annum and the latter a 2,943 sq ft (273 sq m) unit at a rent of £103,000 per annum. The deals follow recent lettings at West Quay to TGI Friday’s, Casa Brasil, Bella Italia and Las Iguanas. At 127 acres (51 hectares), Brighton Marina is the largest marina complex

in Europe and one of the biggest leisure schemes in the South East of England. It is home to an eight-screen Cineworld, Rendezvous Casino and numerous multiple restaurant brands including Café Rouge, Coast to Coast, Zizzi, Nando’s, Prezzo, Frankie & Benny’s, Wetherspoons and Pizza Express. The West Quay development has created an additional seven restaurant units and more than 850 apartments.

When it comes to starting your online presence for your business-to- customer marketing, you need to ask yourself some important questions: What social networks should I be on? What are my customers using? What should I be saying and where? Always go to Facebook. It has around 1 billion active members, an increasingly older user and it helps you build relationships with your consumers. It’s very business friendly—offering customer insights and paid advertisement, so you can target the age group, location and interests. Think about if your

business is selling a product that’s visually appealing, like food or fashion. Remember your customer hasn’t opened Instagram to buy, you have to tease them—and images are one of your most powerful tools. Instagram and Snapchat are helpful if you’re targeting “Millennials” (under 35s), however last year Snapchat attracted more over 35s than 18 – 24 year olds. Snapchat is becoming the fastest growing social channels since Facebook and is definitely worth looking into. It’s tempting to try every social media marketing platform, but the downside is you’ll be creating a lot of work for yourself. The one upside to investing time into multiple platforms is you may find you’re reaching a new demographic—so if you’re unsure, don’t hesitate on testing out platforms, but try not to overstretch your business.

One man’s journey from bureaucracy to butchery

The man who left his job as a council worker to become a Brighton butcher Tom Flint

news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy

Many people dream of leaving the nine-to-five rat race to move into a new career in an industry they have a passion for. Often this involves retraining and starting from scratch or even going it alone and becoming self-employed. For many of us the dream remains just that as the loss of job security is too much of a risk to bear. One man who faced up to these fears is Will Pountney, head butcher and owner of Barfield’s Butchers in Five Ways, Brighton. Five years ago Brightonborn Will was working for a London borough council, running its cycle training programme. Faced with constant budget cuts and bureaucracy, he made the decision to become a butcher. He had no history in the profession but was a meatlover and felt he would be able to pick up the required skills given the right opportunity. After learning his trade at Godfreys butchers in London, the opportunity to move his family back to Brighton arose when a position at Barfield’s became available. Not long after Will was given the chance to take over ownership of the premises and he has never looked back. “I got into this because I love meat,” he said. “I wanted my own business and this was the one that appealed the most. I get really excited about meat and I don’t think I will ever get bored of it.” There has been a butcher at 11 King’s Parade in Ditchling Road since the 1890s so there

I wanted my own business and this was the one that appealed most WILL POUNTNEY Barfield’s Butchers

is a real sense of history attached to the premises. When Will took over, the business had not changed much in the past 30 years and was in need of a little modernisation. Taking on board what he had learnt in London he completely revamped the shop and created a modern butcher’s shop that still had a traditional feel. “It was a testing few months as I wanted to get stuck into it and do my own thing, but it’s been good,” said Will. A balance between traditional customer service and a modern approach to butchery techniques is one of the things that make Barfield’s what it is. It is an approach that has won Will many admirers, having been a runner-up in the 2013 Observer Food Monthly Independent Retailer of the Year awards in his first year. He has since been in the final three of Sussex Butcher of the Year at the Sussex Food Awards - and is up again the year.

So what is it that makes Barfield’s so good? Will puts it down to two things: firstly, he prides himself on providing the best customer service. By using the whole carcase they can offer the customer any cut, and the friendly staff are trained in giving the best advice and guidance. Secondly, Barfield’s sells meat only from farms that use sustainable farming methods where Will can personally guarantee the provenance of the meat he is selling. All the meat is sourced from local farms in Sussex and surrounding counties which place animal welfare at the heart of what they do. I ask Will to sum up why people should come to his shop, and alongside the topquality produce and the fact all work is done on-site, he says they should come for the service. He said: “We are very friendly and do not mind if someone does not know what they want as we will help them work out what’s best. That’s the main selling point of the shop, friendly customer service.” I bought some beef onglet and merguez sausages from Will and they were excellent. The beef, a cut mainly used inFranceandmorecommonly referred to as hanger steak, was packed with flavour and the quality of the meat gave me the confidence to cook it extremely rare – as it should be. Merguez are spiced lamb sausages that originate from north Africa but are again popular in France. It is clear Will did the right thing following his passion and it is certainly food for thought.

Downton Abbey star Phyllis Logan returns to her theatrical roots in Present Laughter which tours to Brighton Theatre Royal from August 8-13. Phyllis, who played the housekeeper Mrs Hughes in all six series of the multi award-winning ITV drama, is long-suffering secretary Monica Reed to Samuel West’s Garry Essendine, the flamboyant and selfobsessed actor. Essendine is a charming diva determined to disregard his advancing years by revelling in endless tantrums and casual affairs. He may be teetering reluctantly towards middle age but everyone is infatuated with Garry, and his antics and rampant flirtations require the most careful handling by those closest to him. About to depart for Africa, he finds himself besieged by a bevy of would be seductresses, not to mention his acerbic secretary, his estranged wife, and an obsessed young playwright. As he attempts to disentangle himself from their clutches and demands, the sparkling comedy escalates… “I am the secretary that has been with him for 17 years,” explains Phyllis. “She has seen all his bad behaviour, and there is

quite a lot of that! But he is very charismatic, and she herself says at one point that it is never dull around him. She is fond of him for all his foibles, and they have a long-standing relationship. He doesn’t appreciate her on the surface, but maybe deep down he does. He says ‘Where would Monica be if I hadn’t rescued her from the sinister old aunt!’ “I first did Coward way, way back. My first job was in rep in Dundee, and my next job was Crewe in rep. We did Fallen Angels.” Sadly, rep is a system which has gone: “But it was a great way to train. You did it to a certain extent in drama school and then certainly in rep. You’d be playing all sorts of things. I played lots of young boys with pencilledon (facial hair). And then you would be playing an old woman. It was a great way to learn your art! “I went into acting because I wanted to be in the theatre. You never thought you were going to be a TV star or a movie star or whatever. You just wanted to be on stage, and it was great to be rehearsing one show during the day and performing a different one in the evening. It was great fun, and you made some great friends, and on tour you went to some interesting backwaters!” Phyllis did her first TV in the late 70s/early 80s, later going on, over a period of eight years, to play the role of

Lady Jane in 48 episodes of the long-running BBC drama Lovejoy. Downton Abbey proved an even greater longrunning success. “The show did go bonkers! But really the success all started with (writer) Julian Fellowes because he constructed the whole life, the home, the characters. But there was also great attention to detail, the costume, the design. It was fantastic. And it wasn’t a bad cast. We ended up with a couple of dames in the show!” There is talk of a film to round the whole thing off: “Everybody is off doing other things, so it would be quite tricky to get everyone together, but from my point of view, I would be up for it. It would be a good way to give it all one last hurrah. I think it could work as a film. I know that Julian and various people are talking, and there is a certain idea for a plot that I can’t reveal. But it sounds good! “It all started off as three series, and then we were asked to do another one, and then another, and it ended up as six. It seemed to me it had then reached a natural point. When you have to consider Julian wrote the whole thing, with other series there is a whole writers room of writers and script editors. Julian was the sole writer, and he also had other projects. But I do think it reached a natural conclusion.”

Fab ‘80s fun as Gareth Gates kicks off his Sunday shoes for Footloose Theatre

Phil Hewitt

Group Arts Editor phil.hewitt@jpress.co.uk

Worldwide smash hit Footloose: The Musical brings Gareth Gates to Brighton Theatre Royal (July 25-30) in the latest in a growing line of musical theatre successes. Gareth, who rose to fame when he went head to head against Will Young in the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2001, points out that the Footloose film starring Kevin Bacon came out in 1984, the year in which he was born. “But I have always been a big, big fan of the film, and I really love the musical version of the show which is great fun and very, very true to the film. I have always loved 80s music, that era of music, the introduction of synthesisers. It’s a great sound that just changed pop music for ever.”

Featuring classic 80s hits including Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, Let’s Hear it for the Boy and the title track, Footloose: The Musical tells the story of city boy Ren who has to move to a rural backwater in America where dancing is banned. All hell breaks out as Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town up on its feet. Gareth, who plays Willard, said: “I have been extremely fortunate in the musical theatre I have done. I made my first appearance in a musical when I was 23. I was Joseph. I had a meeting with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and musical theatre was something I always wanted to do. He offered me the part in the West End. After that, I did Les Miserables and then I did Legally Blonde. I have carved out quite a decent career. “It was actually in Joseph that I began to sing at school

as an eight-year-old. My school was putting on a production of the show, and I just went along to the auditions because my friends were. I ended up getting the title role, and it was because of that that I really started to sing. For Les Miserables, I was asked to be part of the 25th anniversary of the show, and we took it on tour. It was great to be part of that. I was asked by Cameron Mackintosh if I would play the part in the West End. It’s just an incredible show. It’s hard work to feel all that emotion, but it is very rewarding.” And all because of Pop Idol, the series that has made everything possible for Gareth. “Pop Idol was the first show of its kind, before all the X Factor shows you get now. It was very helpful, and it changed my life. I was very fortunate to have all my success as a recording artist

Visitors can enjoy the interactive trail inspired by one of the new Disney•Pixar movie’s star sea creatures Hank (voice of Ed O’Neill), a cantankerous octopus (who

is actually a septopus!) Hank reveals exciting fishy facts and provides collectible ‘letters’ which visitors need to unscramble at the end of the journey to win a reward. Sea Life’s Jamie Turner said: “Like Finding Nemo before it, the new film is likely to inspire an interest in marine life among millions of children.” For further information, or to pre-book tickets please visit www.visitsealife.com/ brighton. Reduced prices are available for tickets booked online.

Musical theatre artist Nils Bergstrand sings about his missing leg in Brighton this month. The One Legged Man Show is at The Purple Playhouse Theatre on Saturday, July 30 (7.30pm). A gunshot wound on New Year’s Eve in Thailand left Swedish singer Nils without a leg. Performing his Edinburgh Festival Fringe preview, Nils tells the story of the leg that got away in a brand new oneman cabaret, featuring original songs and accompanied by personal and intimate storytelling. The audience journeys with Nils from the island where the gunshot wound occurred, through 35 surgeries, amputation and tough rehabilitation. The show focuses on how people can stay happy while dealing with life’s challenges. It also demonstrates the struggles that can accompany living with a disability. Tickets cost £10. on the back of it. I worked really really hard on music as a child. I couldn’t really talk very easily to other children (because of stammering). My form of expression as a child was singing. I practised every day for hours and hours and gave myself the best chance I could, and then I was very, very lucky to find a show like that. I think the final really gripped the nation!” Since when, he has managed to sustain success while plenty of other talent-show finalists have disappeared for good: “I just think that is down to hard work. I am a firm believer that if you put the work in, if you have got the drive, you can achieve what you want to achieve. I used the opportunity that Pop Idol gave me to build a career, and I am as busy now as I have ever been.” Tickets on 0844 871 7650.

Trans Pride 2016 is set to transform The Marlborough in Brighton into a hub of creative collaboration. Spokeswoman Nina Sarfas said: “A new installation is being constructed at The Marlborough to celebrate Trans Pride. Nothing About Us, Without Us is an immersive piece of mixed media, utilising sound bites and visual elements to inform visitors about trans experience, which can be enhanced by using headsets from our venue. “The Marlborough will also be hosting Trans Pride Art Night on Thursday, July 21, a showcase of micro-commissions, supported by Arts Council England, promoting the trans community’s wealth of creative talent. Featuring cabaret pieces examining the sociopolitics of transitioning (Elijah W Harris) and the seminal trans Coronation

Street character of Hayley Cropper (Kate O’Donnell) in our theatre. Finally, we present an interactive game experience Interchangeable Bodies that encourages us to examine and illuminate gender, trans experience and normativity through play.” Nothing About Us, Without Us is being created by artists Yishay Garbasz and Annie Goh. Nina said: “Even within LGTBQI communities, transvoices are on the periphery, particularly trans-women of colour. Interviews conducted by Yishay Garbasz, especially for this project, form a collage that pours out into the public space. This work attempts to give space to the individual stories told, to let go of control and give agency to voice and expression of those speaking.” The collage will play from speakers outside the Marlborough pub, Brighton every day from 12pm-4pm. The event runs from Monday July 11-August 12.

don’t really do vegetarian food, I like meat and am loathe to eat a meal without any. I am aware that this is quite an outdated and reckless viewpoint in terms of sustainability and personal health. I know that many people will disagree with me, some quite strongly, and that’s fine by me. Planet India has always been one of those Brighton restaurants that I heard lots of good things about but had never been to – for reasons already stated. When I read that they had opened a new restaurant in Hove I felt that it was time to give them a try. We should all do things that we wouldn’t normally do every now and then, it’s good to challenge our preconceptions even if it only serves to reinforce them. The new restaurant has taken up residence in a rather grand looking building on Third Avenue. I am told that it used to be an Italian restaurant called Leone’s that was linked to a hotel – it is not one that I was previously aware of. I take in my surroundings which I find to be charming in a very strange way. They have not refurbished the old restaurant rather appropriated it. Grandiose marble columns and a fancy wooden bar from its past life are mixed with fun animal print seating, reggae music, and family pictures from India. It shouldn’t work but sort of does in that it sets the tone for what is to come. As I glance over the menu this feeling of familiarity and openness continues. It is written in a way that gives the impression of a friend telling you about the dishes. I begin with a sample of dishes from the starters and mains so that I can get a feel for what Planet India is about. My mixed platter of starters includes

A trio of veggie curries.

some familiar and not so familiar dishes. The onion bhaji is one of the best I’ve had. No hint of grease and the sweet crisp onion is supplemented with aromatic fennel and nigella seeds. The samosa is dense and packed with potato, and so I only have a cursory bite or two. It is in the less familiar dishes that my taste buds are really treated. Khaman Dhokla is an impressively light and spongey non wheat cake that surpasses all expectations. Pani Puri are an explosion of freshness and heat that you build yourself before popping into your mouth whole. The signature starter is a chick pea and puffed rice salad called Dhai Bhel Puri. It is a complex dish of texture, heat, cooling yoghurt, sweet tamarind and zesty citrus that is an instant hit with me. As I reflect on the starters I realise I am entering unchartered territory. I am eating vegetarian food and actually enjoying it. The main dishes arrive and I have a selection of three curries and assorted

sundries to accompany them. My curries are a creamy aubergine in yoghurt, a pea and paneer that I am pleased to hear referred to as cheesy peas and finally a Masoor Dall. Of the three the Masoor Dall is the best as a standalone dish. It is a simple red lentil curry with a sweetness from tomato and delicately spiced. The others are good without being particularly stand out. Where the dishes really begin to get interesting is when you start to combine them, both with each other and with the sides. Sweet mango chutney and fresh tamarind root pickle add layers to the dishes whilst cooling yoghurt offers relief from heat. Sides of cabbage, sweetcorn and salsa give a variety of textures that make the whole more interesting than the sum of its parts. The Thepla bread is a new one on me and something I would definitely order again. Not quite the heady heights of the starters but a good meal nonetheless. I finish with a cardamom and saffron ice cream that they make on site. It is both delicious, refreshing and indulgent all at once. It is rare to get such a lovely dessert at an Indian restaurant and I polish off the whole bowl. Seeing as this was my first visit to Planet India I was really impressed with what they had to offer. It is relaxed and playful dining that is best enjoyed in a group. Singularly the flavours are good but once combined they start to bring out the best in each other. The starters were really stand out and the ice cream was a highlight. There is a really interesting feel to the venue and, whilst I appreciate it will not be to everyone’s taste, if you don’t like it you are probably taking it too seriously. abar was an elephant who wore a rather fetching green suit and a little yellow crown. He was the creation of Jean de Brunhoff who wrote his Histoire de Babar in 1931. In 1933, A.A.Milne wrote an English version – The Story of Babar – and alongside The Moomins and Albert The Fifth Musketeer, Babar trumpety trump trumped his way into the heart of every nineties kid. In the 18th century, the exiled King of Poland, Stanislaw Leszczynski, invented the rum baba. This baba didn’t have a green suit or a yellow crown. In fact it wasn’t even an elephant. Stanislaw’s baba was a cylindrical yeast cake saturated in alcohol. An elephant in a suit is already sounding like a nicer dessert. We’ve all grown accustomed to saying pain au chocolat, but baba au rum is apparently just too French, so it’s rum baba, rum baba, that’s how it goes. Rum baba, rum baba, everyone knows. The name baba comes from babka which means “old woman” in Polish. Well that’s just sealed the deal – I’ll definitely take the elephant instead please. Stanislaw created his baba in Lorraine. The French region is perhaps better known as the birthplace of a quiche. Lorraine is also where Joan of Arc is from. I didn’t know that either. How sad to be upstaged by a quiche. Lorraine’s other claim to fame is sharing a name with a GMTV presenter from Dundee. That Lorraine not only has a cracking surname, but since her Daybreak stint, has also come to understand the sadness of being upstaged by a quiche. In 1844, some patissiers in Paris invented a savarin. A savarin is basically a baba but it requires a different mould. The mould is a ring rather than a cylinder. They both look like doughnuts. It’s a bit like going to Egypt to see The Pyramids, and then going back because someone’s renamed them The Triangles. Or translating someone else’s stories into English and claiming royalties nonetheless. Poor poor Babar, no bagsful. He might forgive, but he’ll never forget. And everyone feels awkward when he’s in the room.

FIAT uses expertise and experience for larger-than-life Qubo Staff Reporter

brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk

The new FIAT Qubo MPV is now available to order in the UK, demonstrating once again the expertise and experience that FIAT has in designing and building cars that are compact on the outside but larger-than-life in terms of both personality and interior space. Part of the functional family, alongside the popular Panda, versatile Doblo and all-new

Tipo hatchback and station wagon, the new FIAT Qubo retains its 3.96m long and 1.7m wide dimensions meaning it continues to mate the footprint of a supermini with the interior more like that of an MPV with ample room for five adults and a capacious 250-litre boot – which grows to 650 litres when the parcel shelf is removed or an astonishing 2,500 litres with the rearseats removed. In total, there are 16 different seating configurations, with the rear seats accessed by practical sliding doors. For 2016, the FIAT Qubo getsanewexteriorlookwhich,

in keeping with the character of the car, combines Italian style with everyday practicality. The large, high-mounted headlamps, for example,

help define the Qubo’s friendly face – now augmented by a new “smiling” front grille and chunky new front bumper – also offering improved nighttime visibility and limiting

the likelihood of damage in the event of a minor accident. The tailgate is also revised, with the large circular recess giving way to a straight, flat panel with a more elegant location for the FIAT badge, while the gloss black trim is redesigned to accommodate tailgate release, illumination fortherelocatednumberplate and bolder Qubo badge. The choice of exterior colours is enriched with two new hues, Magnetic Bronze and Azure Blue, while new wheel cover and alloy wheel designs complete the exterior revisions. Inside, th e new FIAT

FIRSTDRIVE:VOLKSWAGENBEETLEDUNE

LIFE’S A BEACH

The new Beetle Dune is designed to bring some beach buggy-style toughness to the Beetlerangewithanincreased ride height, rugged-looking body cladding and big wheels. Inside, yougetsomesporty seatsandarangeofequipment inherited from the standard Beetle’s ‘Design’ trim level. Standard kit includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic lights and wipers, and air conditioning, while customers can add various goodies such as satellite navigation and heated front seats. There’sachoiceoftwobodystyles – the Cabriolet seen here or the hard-top Coupe – while two engines are available:the148bhp2.0-litrediesel and the103bhp1.2-litre petrol we tested.

TheBeetlehasalwaysbeen about style, and there is undoubtedly a section of its target market that will be drawn to the Dune variant’s more rugged look. Even though the Dune has only been lifted by 10mm, the extra height does seem to give it a little more presence, and the chunky wheel arches play their part too. Inside, ithasthatsameaesthetic – sporty in an off-road sort of way – with supportive seats trimmed in black, grey and yellow and yellow trimmings on the dials. Practicality is unlikely to beakeyconsiderationforbuyers of any Beetle, so few will be toobotheredabouttheDune’s lack of space. Those in the front will be perfectly happy with how

much head- and elbow-room they are afforded, while the rearseatsarefineforchildren. For adults, though, spending any length of time in the back would be unpleasant – especially with tall people occupying the front seats. It’s also worth noting that

FACTFILE PRICE: £25,700 ENGINE: 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol producing 103bhp and 129lb/ft TRANSMISSION: Seven-speed automatic driving the front wheels PERFORMANCE: Top speed 109mph, 0-62mph in 12.1 seconds ECONOMY: 52.3mpg combined EMISSIONS: 126g/km of CO2

this convertible version sacrifices boot space to accommodate the folding canvas roof. The hard-top Dune Coupe manages to provide 310 litres of luggage space, but the Cabriolet’s load bay is a mere 225 litres in volume. It’s less easily accessible than the

Coupe’s, too, thanks to the smaller tailgate. If you’re sold on the Dune’s looks, then you can rest assured that nothing about the way it drives will put you off. The extra ride height doesn’t seem to have any especially adverse effects on the comfort or the handling, and apart from the steering, which some might find a touch heavy, the Dune is very easy to drive. Performance from the 1.2-litre petrol is adequate, rather than abundant, but it isn’t too noisy and it’s surprisingly well matched to the seven-speed automatic transmission. It’s fairly economical, too, with official figures claiming more than 50mpg and

126g/km CO2 emissions. The diesel is even more frugal, returningmorethan60mpgand 122g/km in its most efficient manual guise. The only real issues, then, are a slight lack of visibility when the roof is raised and a lot of road noise at motorway cruising speeds. DuneCabrioletsstartfrom £24,255 for the basic 1.2-litre petrol-powered manual and rise to £28,235 for the diesel automatic, which isn’t so bad when you consider that the standard Beetle drop-top starts from around £19,500. It’s still a lot of money, though – enough to buy you a Mercedes-Benz A-Class, in fact – and you don’t get all that much thrown in, but toget too hung up on the numbers is to miss the point. Value for money will not be high on any prospective Dune driver’slist ofpriorities. If you’re in the Dune’s target market, the chances are you’ll already know whether you want one, and you probably aren’t overly fussed whether VW is charging £20,000 or £25,000. It’s aimed at a younger generation of car buyer anyway – one that’s usually more interested in monthly paymentsthanoutrightpurchase prices. TheDunewillappealtoanyone who likes the Beetle but wants something a little more rugged and SUV-like than the standard car. It’s never going to be the main family bus, but a few youngfamiliesmighttakeone on as a chunky, funky second set of wheels.

attentionwereT-junctionsand intersections. According to the report, of allcarcrashesthatoccurredin the UK between 2012-14, 55-65 per cent took place at or within 20 metres of the junction, a figurethatdidn’tchangemuch with driver age. However, for fatal crashes inthesamescenario, thefigure was 30 per cent for all ages up to 65, increasing to 50 per cent for those aged over 75; a significant problem for elderly drivers. The report points out that themajorityofcrashesthatoccur at intersections take place at T-junctions where no traffic control devices are present.

To solve this problem, the report suggests studying the effectiveness of having miniroundaboutsinstalledatbusy T-junctions with little or no change to the kerb lines. Other suggestions to make

UK roads more accommodating for elderly drivers include installingreflectivebackplates on road signs and traffic signals, larger lettering on directionsigns, andregularcleaning of road signs.

‘MAKE ROADS SAFER FOR OLDER DRIVERS’

British roadways should be modified to make them less dangerous for older drivers, a road safety organisation has suggested. A Government-backed report by the Older Drivers Task Force, managed by the Road Safety Foundation, has highlighted that the UK does not

Amy’s going for gold with Team GB in Rio Rugby

Steve Bailey

Former Hove rugby player Amy Wilson Hardy is targeting gold in Rio after being named in the Great Britain women’s rugby sevens squad for the Olympics. The 24-year-old, who now plays for Bristol, spent a year with Hove after beginning her career at Worthing and signed a professional deal with the England sevens squad in 2014. Her place in the 12-player squad was announced on Tuesday. It will be the first time in 108 years that Team GB has had representation in rugby at Olympic level and a first for the seven-a-side format. The squad fly out to Brazil on Monday and Wilson Hardy, a former pupil at Worthing College and Our Lady of Sion School, said: “The whole experience is going to be amazing; not just performing but being in the Olympic Village with such phenomenal athletes is pretty hard to get your head around. “We’re the first event, so we’ve got the chance to win the first gold medal as well. “In sevens rugby, anyone can beat anyone on the day and we’re 100 per cent looking to medal. It’s going to be a really strong competition and there will be six to eight top teams but we’re definitely hoping for gold and are not going to hide behind that.”

Amy Wilson Hardy in action for England

Wilson Hardy started her rugby career with Worthing aged 11 and played at Roundstone Lane until she was 17. She also represented Sussex, the south east region and won a place in the England Development Group – together with a Talented Athlete Scholarship (TASS) – when she was 14. She then spent a year playing for Hove and was at the club earlier this month when Hove held an open day for girls aged 11 to 18. Wilson Hardy then moved to Bristol, with whom she

is still affiliated. She signed a professional deal with the England women sevens squad in 2014 and admits the last couple of years have been a whirlwind. “In the last three years, I’ve gone from playing a sport simply because I love it, and as a hobby essentially, to now being a professional and going to the Olympics. “It’s just starting to sink in now and it’s an unbelievable privilege to be included in the squad.” The initial training camp for the women’s squad was 24

players and that has been cut down to 12 for the Olympics. The sevens competition takes place over six days, with the women competing from August 6-8 at the Deodoro Stadium in a pool which includes hosts Brazil, Japan and Canada. n Pre-season is in full swing at Hove, with the men’s team training every Tuesday and Thursday at Hove Recreation Ground from 7pm. New players are welcome to attend. For more information, visit www.pitchero.com/ clubs/hoverugbyfootballclub

Runners out in force for launch of Brighton’s Rest and Run Club Athletics

Athletes descended on Brighton seafront on Saturday for the launch of Holiday Inn’s Rest and Run Club. In total, 50 runners of all ages took to the promenade for the pier-to-pier run along Brighton’s waterfront. As part of the opening, racers took on the Epic Challenges runners – the duo behind ‘Race the Tube’ videos and who took part in the 6k challenge in a kayak. Both Noel Carroll and James Heptonstall from Epic felt the event was a lot of fun and said: “It was great to see so many

runners out and about on a beautiful Brighton morning earning their breakfast. “We had our work cut out for us in the kayak, but were pretty happy to arrive on Brighton seafront not too far behind the running group.” The event was part of a trial taking place currently for Holiday Inn Rest and Run Clubs. The group, which is available to both guests and non-guests, initially launched at both Brighton seafront and Camden Lock Holiday Inn hotels. It is hoped that clubs will meet regularly, starting and finishing in the open lobby.

Albion manager Chris Hughton says lessons will be learned after a 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Fulham on Tuesday evening. The Seagulls had won their opening pre-season match 4-0 away to Crawley Town on Saturday when Beram Kayal, Tomer Hemed, Glenn Murray – within three minutes of entering the pitch at half-time after returning to the club – and Elvis Manu were on the scoresheet. That was followed up by a disappointing defeat to the Cottagers at Aldershot and speaking to www.seagulls. co.uk, Hughton said: “If you’re not at your best or anywhere near your best, then you will get beaten. “I thought we were very good at Crawley and went about our business the right way against that level. Our preparation was very good, and it was for this game as well, but I thought Fulham were the better team over the

90 minutes. “We played some of the younger lads, but I don’t want to look at any excuses; they were better than us, more clinicalandwenevermadethe most of our opportunities in the final third and never made the keeper work enough. “We will learn more from losing a game like this today compared to a good victory.” Albion now head into a double-header with League Two sides Luton and Stevenage on Saturday. The game at Luton kicks-off at 2pm, with the Stevenage match a 5.30pm start. Dale Stephens is set to return on Saturday after missing the Fulham defeat with a knock to his knee and Jiri Skalak could also be involved for the first time in pre-season, having been part of the Czech Republic squad at Euro 2016. GoalkeeperDavidStockdale and defender Connor Goldson will miss out with foot and knee injuries respectively, while Solly March is set to return to action after the first international break in September.

Whitehawk Football Club have swooped to sign two goalkeepers in the past week. Lucas Covolan and Adri Munoz will fight it out as both look to secure Hawks’ number one jersey for the upcoming National League South season. Brazilian Covolan comes to Hawks with a wealth of experience and has made appearances for his country at under-20 level. During his career, Covolan has played for both Vasco da Gama and Rio Branco AC in Brazil’s Serie A league.

Whitehawk Football Club boss Pablo Asensio

Spanish stopper Munoz has been on trial with Pablo Asensio’s side over the past couple of weeks and has now earned himself a deal.

Hawks defender Ramon Marimon is a former teammate of Whitehawk’s newest addition and Munoz has played for Spanish outfit Llagostera. Whitehawk’s pre-season preparations continued on Saturday when they saw off Ryman League Premier side Burgess Hill 1-0, with a trialist scoring the only goal. Asensio’s side host Horsham on Saturday before they entertain a Brighton & HoveAlbionXIonWednesday. Their final friendly is away to Shoreham on July 29, before the National League South season begins on August 6.

Seagulls quartet head out on loan Brighton & Hove Albion

Four Albion players have gone out on loan in the last week. First-team players Jake Forster-Caskey and Chris O’Grady have joined Championship sides Rotherham and Burton Albion respectively on season-long loan deals. Under-21 defender Tom Dallison has joined League Two Cambridge on loan for six months and Jordan Maguire-Drew, also a member of Albion’s under-21 squad, has gone to National League side Dagenham & Redbridge until January. Midfielder Forster-Caskey, 22, has made 82 appearances for Brighton but had two loan spells at MK Dons last season as he was unable to force his way into the Albion squad. Seagulls boss Chris Hughton said: “With increasing competition in the midfield areas, Jake knows it will be difficult to get the number of games he would want. After two successful loan periods with MK Dons last season, an opportunity has arisen for Jake to gain regular Championship football again, which benefits all three parties.” O’Grady has struggled to make an impact with

Jake Forster-Caskey

Brighton since joining in the summer of 2014. He has scored three goals in 38 games for the club but spent much of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, scoring twice in 21 matches. Hughton said: “It’s a move that suits him from a family perspective, and it will give him the games that he needs at this stage of his career.” Dallison’s move to Cambridge will be his fourth loan spell since joining Albion from Arsenal in 2013. He has had spells with Braintree, Dartford and Crawley Town in the past two seasons. Maguire-Drew, 18, signed his first professional contract with Brighton this summer. His move to Dagenham comes on the back of eight goals in six matches on loan at Ryman League Worthing last season.

Albion set for encounters with familiar faces in double-header Brighton & Hove Albion

With pre-season games now in full swing, Brighton fans will have two chances to see their side in action this weekend, as Chris Hughton’s men play backto-back games on Saturday afternoon. The Seagulls are set to field two different squads for the games at League Two outfits Luton Town and Stevenage, which kick-off at 2pm and 5.30pm respectively. With the distance between the grounds just over half an hour by car, supporters can realistically leave Kenilworth

Road at full-time and make it to Broadhall Way for the start of the second game against Stevenage. For most fans, it’s the former of this weekend’s games that will attract the most interest, as it pits Albion against former player and assistant manager Nathan Jones for the first time since he left the Amex in January. Jones steered Luton to an 11th place finish in the fourth tier at the end of last season, and has already used his links with his former club to help bring in some players in the transfer window

this summer. Defender Glen Rea joined the Bedfordshire outfit for an undisclosed fee, after a loan spell at Kenilworth Road near the end of the previous campaign, with goalkeeper Christian Walton also joining the Hatters on a season-long loan. With former Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith also playing for the League Two side, the quartet can expect a good reception from the visiting fans in attendance on Saturday afternoon. The transfer window is nonsensical

t’s hot. Really hot. Apparently this is summer. By the time these words hit the newsagents or the internet server it might be over, but the pre-season fixtures are upon us and the 2016-17 campaign is just over two weeks away. The hopes and fears are starting to formulate but it is a difficult time for many. The hard yards are being done on the training ground, combinations are being tried and the money men are looking to seal the deals for their targets. In years gone by, there would still be plenty of time before the points are up for grabs but nowadays it comes around quickly. The strange anomaly though remains that the transfer window stays open throughout August once the games have begun. For me, the system is nonsensical.

The turmoil for players and clubs seems illogical. For me, you do your business and get ready for the season. The reports and rumours surrounding players can be very unsettling. I don’t mind it now when it’s fair game, but if the window moves into August, in between games, I believe it doesn’t do anyone any favours. One of Albion’s star players, Dale Stephens, is currently the subject of reports and rumours about interest from Burnley. Inevitably after the season the Seagulls had last year there will be approaches, but once the action begins the wheeling and dealing must end. The motivation of the players will rightly or wrongly be questioned, the fear of injury will remain and so it goes on. As long as everyone is, excuse the pun, on a level playing field, there can’t be any complaints. Retaining the services of key players will no doubt be of more concern

to the Albion than maybe others but I feel there needs to be a change. While we’re at it, let’s have a winter break after Christmas. Ten days and go again. And while we’re at it, let’s use technology to solve contentious decisions. Retrospective analysis on more incidents and go again. And while we’re at it, can we end FA Cup replays to fit the bill for the future? Extratime, penalties and go again. Don’t worry, I won’t continue with more but any sport must embrace change. I will admit I have often resisted and struggled severely when the BBC introduced the 3D weather but now it’s second nature. Where do we stop? I don’t know but let’s start with allowing shorts and flip flops at work. After all, summer only lasts a few days, despite the fact that the summer transfer window goes on, and on.

Sussex cricket captain Luke Wright praised overseas professional Ross Taylor for the role he played in securing a draw at Kent this week. In the County Championship Division 2 match, Kent posted 575 but New Zealand international Taylor – in his final four-day appearance for the county – hit 142 in Sussex’s total of 333, before he struck 68 in the second innings as Sussex, following on, finished on 255-5. Speaking after the game ended in a draw on Wednesday, Wright said: “Ross has been awesome the whole way through and we’ve relied on him a lot. I’m pleased to see him finish with two good scores that got us out of trouble. “Once we finished on the wrong side of the toss we knew it was always going to be a hard game, particularly going into today following on. We thought it might break up and with James Tredwell and Kagiso Rabada to face we knew it would be tough, but I’m really pleased we saw it out. “It’s been the story of our four-day season that we’ve had to work really hard for our draws, but we can take a lot of

positives from this. We’re in a building stage with this squad, I’m a new captain and in Mark Davis we have a new coach, so we are in transition and we’ll need a bit of time and patience to bed in. “The one thing we do want is attitude and fight, and I think we’ve shown that in bucketfulls here.” The draw was Sussex’s

eighth in nine County Championship matches this season and leaves them sixth in the table.
