Four unions set to take action in disputes with Brighton’s rail and bus companies Bex Bastable
bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable
Brighton and Hove commuters are set to be hit by a fresh series of strikes as tensions rise between workers and their bosses at local train and bus companies. The RMT union continues its dispute with rail operator Govia Thameslink (GTR) over changes to conductor roles with a five-day strike starting on Monday. The RMT, and a second union, The Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) are also balloting their members over GTR’s plans to close ticket
offices and replace them with station hosts on the platform. GTR said the unions’ decision to ballot their members was ‘pointless and ridiculous’. But TSSA leader Manuel Cortes said: “Passengers may have to suffer short-term pain to see a long-term gain in the shape of new owners, hopefully Transport for London if ministers start seeing sense.” And in a third blow to the rail company, another union, ASLEF, which represents train drivers, has said there has been a ‘breakdown in industrial relations’ over new timetables introduced last
month. It is set to ballot its members employed by GTR on both strike action and action short of a strike. And Brighton and Hove Buses is also in dispute with Unite, which represents its bus drivers. Brighton and Hove Buses which is owned by the same company as GTR - as part of the Go Ahead group - faces strike action over allegations of bullying by senior management. Martin Harris, managing director of Brighton and Hove Buses, said he did not accept the union’s claims. SEE PAGES 3 AND 9
British Airways i360 officially opened to the public yesterday (Thursday), more than a decade after the concept for the tourist attraction was born. The tower on Brighton seafront gives visitors a view over the city and the South Downs when it glides to its full height of 138 metres. Gill Mitchell, lead councillor for environment, transport and sustainability said: “Brighton and Hove’s seafront requires constant renewal if we are to remain as a top coastal visitor destination, and the i360 will play a key role as a flagship seafront landmark for the city attracting both visitors and new investment.” see page 4

On track for more travel disruption Bex Bastable

A five-day strike is set to further frustrate longsuffering commuters, with a reduced service from Monday. No Southern trains will run between Preston Park and Hove, and there will be a limited service on Csoastway services, including the Brighton services to Eastbourne in the east, and Bognor in the West. The Brighton to London Victoria service will also be limited. The reason for the latest strike is the RMT union’s long-running dispute with Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) over the future role of conductors. Angie Doll, passenger service director at GTR, said: “We are sorry that our passengers once again look set to suffer further
disruption because of the RMT. This action is not necessary. Our new on-board supervisors will no longer close the doors, a task that passes to the driver with the aid of CCTV. This will cost noone their jobs, and frees up staff on board trains to better serve passengers.” Mick Cash, general secretary at the RMT, said: “We repeat our offer in good faith to suspend action if the company agree to suspend the planned changes to the safety critical role of the guard and the bulldozing through of the new contracts without agreement.” GTR and the RMT are currently in talks with mediator ACAS, in a bid to avert the five-day strike. As the Brighton & Hove Independent went to press, no agreement had been reached. Other unions have announced they are set
to ballot their members working for GTR. The RMT and Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) are considering a strike over cuts to ticket offices, which the unions say will lead to job losses something GTR denies. The company’s train drivers under ASLEF are also considering a strike, over rostering issues brought about by the revised weekday timetable, which started in early July and cancelled more than 300 services a day. Ms Doll, said: “Aslef members have been successfully operating this timetable for three weeks to deliver more reliable services for passengers and staff in the face of train crew shortages. To call a strike ballot against this timetable now is a cynical and desperate attempt to heap even more misery on passengers.”
Albion: Rail chaos ‘unacceptable’ Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber has criticised Southern and the RMT union for the fiveday strike next week, which could cause problems for fans trying to get to matches. The football club boss said: “It is hugely disappointing that our fans, along with many others, are being subjected to such inconvenience and uncertainty regarding their travel arrangements to and from matches. Our business, like so many others in
London and the south east, is now being severely disrupted by the dispute which, as a major customer of Southern, is totally unacceptable. “Itisnot forthe clubtotake sides in a dispute to which we are not privy to the details, but both sides should reflect on the damage this dispute is doing to local businesses, the local economy, and to the goodwill of people who need train services for work and leisure travel.” In the meantime, the club has put contingency plans in
place if the proposed strike does go ahead next week. It will impact matches against Colchester United in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday and then the opening home league fixture against Nottingham Forest on Friday. The club’s operations team has secured additional parking and bus services for extra park-and-ride sites at Sainsbury’s, West Hove, and Brendon Equestrian, Pyecombe, and is negotiating additional parking in both the city centre and Lewes.
Sussex Police ups security ahead of Brighton Pride Sussex Police has said it has strengthened its security ahead of Brighton Pride this weekend. Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, Brighton and Hove divisional commander, said: “We have been working hard for months with the Pride organisers in order to make sure as many people as possible get to have an enjoyable and safe weekend. “In terms of security, where public safety has been significantly compromised as it has been in recent events overseas, we have considered any lessons that we can learn and reviewed our plans to keep Pride in Brighton and Hove as safe as possible. “Whilst the nationally assessed terrorist threat to Pride is unchanged from 2015, we have this year strengthened our contingency plans and have some additional security measures in place. Most
people are unlikely to notice any difference from previous years and none of the changes that we have made should affect the enjoyment of people involved in the Pride celebrations in anyway. “As always, we ask that the public demonstrates a certain level of personal responsibility including things like: taking care of belongings, following personal safety advice and flagging any issues or suspicious behaviour to event staff or police.” Paul Kemp, Pride director, said: “We would like to thank Sussex Police for liaising closely with Pride and the extra measures being put in place this year to enhance safety for everybody.” For up to date information throughout the Pride weekend follow @ BtonHovePolice on Twitter or the Brighton and Hove Police Facebook page.

It’sbeen11yearsinthemaking, but finally, the British Airways i360 is open to the public. The city’s newest attraction at the site of the West Pier, opened its doors to the public yesterday (Thursday), and held its first preview flights earlier this week. The futuristic glass pod can hold up to 200 people, and glides up to 138 metres, giving passengers a view over Brighton and Hove, the South Downs, and Sussex. British Airways i360 is the brainchild of architects David Marks and Julia Barfield of Marks Barfield Architects, best known as the practice that conceived and designed the London Eye. Architect Julia Barfield said: “We first experienced what impact that heady mix of innovative architecture and engineering, combined with a great view of a great city, can have on the city at the London Eye. How it can be a catalyst for regeneration, breathe new life into forgotten areas and most importantly, give back to the city. “Once you have experienced this, there is an almost irresistible urge to do it again – to drop another piece of design into the water and watch the ripples. We hope and expect that the i360 can have a similar positive effect on another great city: Brighton.” Architect David Marks said: “Everyone loves a great view; it seems to be a universal desire to see the earth and its cities
The i360: How it all began... The idea of creating a ‘vertical pier’ as a catalyst for Brighton and Hove’s seafront regeneration was born in March 2005 when David Marks was invited by Alan McCarthy, the then chief executive of Brighton and Hove City Council, to view potential sites in the city for a new landmark attraction. In 2005 the West Pier Trust entered into a development agreement with Brighton i360 Limited, a new company formed by Marks Barfield, and planning permission was granted by Brighton and Hove City Council in 2006. It took a further ten years and the expertise of hundreds of people to turn the concept into
from exceedingly high places; it is a pleasure both to the eyes, and to the intellect, not only to gaze at horizons, but to look beyond them, and in doing so, to raise one’s sights that much higher. “British Airways i360 cannot replace the muchloved and much-missed West Pier, but it can offer
reality. The construction of British Airways i360 cost £42.2m, funded in part by £36.2 million from the Government’s Public Works Loans Board (PWLB), which was secured by Brighton and Hove City Council to lend on to British Airways i360 at a commercial interest rate. The profit on interest from the loan along with the business rates that the attraction will pay will earn the local authority more than £1 million a year. In addition to business rates and loan repayments, Brighton and Hove City Council will receive one per cent of all British Airways i360 ticket revenues.
an alternative, one where its purpose, like the West Pier, is simply to delight, entertain and inspire. And just as the original pier welcomed Victorian Society to walk on water visitors are invited again to gain a new perspective on the city and its setting between the land and the sea, and to walk on air.”

Council: ‘Don’t drink and swim’ Residents and visitors have been warned not to swim in the sea after drinking alcohol, following an incident where lifeguards had to save two people who had got into trouble in stormy seas. Councillor Alan Robins, the council’s lead member for the seafront, said: “Our lifeguards have once again shown their incredible professionalism and bravery in an incident that could so easily have been
avoided. Please be sensible, stay safe and don’t put your life and their lives at risk unnecessarily by swimming after drinking alcohol. “It is never safe to go into the sea after drinking alcohol. Even a small amount of alcohol can speed up the onset of hypothermia. “Drinkingalsoreducesyour capabilities and perceptions. You may also think you are a better swimmer than

your true ability and take unnecessary risks. “We’re keen to remind people to swim within the areas patrolled by our lifeguards. These are clearly marked with red and yellow flags. Entering the sea during or after strong winds and large waves is extremely dangerous. Brighton and Hove’s shoreline has steeply shelving beaches, which in turn create heavy and
powerful waves right on the beach edge. “These waves and shingle banks make getting out of the sea extremely difficult, and what seemed like a quick swim can turn into a life threatening incident within seconds. “The sea temperature can also be deceptive and can cause people’s body temperature quickly – and sometimes fatally.”

A new vision for crumbling Madeira Terraces unveiled Shuaib Shafi and Bex Bastable
news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy
An architect’s firm has revealed its plans for the Madeira Terraces, with luxury homes, a hotel and shops. Brighton-based Chalk Architects has worked with other local consultants to propose a design for the dilapidated arches, which would see the area regenerated and would add green lawns on the roof of the Terraces - creating a green space on Madeira Parade. Paul Nicholson, an architect at the firm, said the idea is for ‘a new public realm for the Kemp Town seafront: a people’s promenade along what would be the new Kemp Town Lawns’. The design has been welcomed by Paul Zara, chair of RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Sussex, who said: “The new lawns are a brilliant idea, softening the busy seafront road.

shops and overnight beach huts at the site. He said: “I support the scheme the council has proposed, with a faithful restoration of Philips Cawston Lockwood’s original concept. We a costed plan, have placed a bid for funding
and will make progress on the scheme in October. “I don’t support this much more extensive and uncosted concept that includes luxury flats and involves cutting into the promenade and removing the green wall.”

A hidden gem tucked away on a Hove street
O
ne day when walking into work I stumbled across a lovely little road in Hove. Richardson Road has nearly everything you would ever need on it including a butcher, fish monger, off licence and baker. This was a great discovery and something that I have always loved about working and living in Brighton and Hove; there is always another hidden gem round a corner somewhere. One resident of Richardson Road is Drury’s coffee house, where I spent a surprisingly sunny lunch time recently. Drury’s coffee originated in London in 1936 and was started by three Italian brothers. The branch situated in Hove is also a family affair, having been owned by members of the Davids and Lewis family for the last 14 years. The current owners, Elaine and Stephen, took over the premises eight years ago running both the café, wholesale distribution and a machine showroom from the one building. When you initially step through the door there is a distinctly traditional feel to the interior with the wholesale counter and wall of Drury’s produce immediately in front of you. The rest of the café is spacious and a traditional coffee house feel remains. On the day I visited the customers represented a decent cross-section of the local community with people from all walks of life in attendance. I order an Americano at the counter from the wide selection of teas and coffees and go for a New Yorkstyle bagel for my lunch. There is a wide selection of sandwich fillings all of which can be presented as a sandwich, baguette or bagel. There is also a variety of cakes and bakes should you be after something a little sweeter. Given the unusually bright weather I take my place at one of the many outside tables and join the good people in Hove in watching the world go by. After a brief wait my coffee and then my bagel arrive.
Both are of a good standard; the bagel has a welcome amount of pastrami and pickles with the all important mustard kick; the coffee is smooth without being overly strong, which is good for me as I am only an
occasional coffee drinker. I enjoy my time sitting in the sunshine contemplating some things I have to do later and making some notes in my to do list. I chat with Elaine for a while about their business and how it came about; she clearly enjoys her work and being a part of the local community. It is a great spot to be in and Elaine is proud of what they are doing; even if there are challenges in being a small business in the age of the multi-nationals. Before I took my leave Elaine offered me a piece of cake.
Road and Drury’s. In the space of one road you can pick up everything you need for a weekend meal and then stop off for some light refreshments before heading home. Surely that is one of life’s most simple pleasures. You can find the same fresh produce and products at Drury Coffee’s second shop located at 197 Church Road, Hove. This location is easily accessible and perfect for business meetings.
I had originally planned to skip dessert as had a big dinner planned that evening; my gluttonous self felt otherwise, and I was glad that it did. I opted for a home made chocolate brownie and was given a moreish and moist slice of deliciousness. Few things in life are as satisfying on such a base level as a well-made brownie and this is what I got. I was so busy having a “moment” with my cake that I completely forgot why I was there and did not get a picture. If you are not already familiar with this little spot in Hove I would recommend taking a trip to Richardson

Bus drivers set to go on strike
Bex Bastable
bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable
Bus drivers and engineers working at Brighton and Hove Buses have voted to go on strike, after allegations of ‘bullying, intimidation and the use of covert surveillance by managers on workers’. Unite announced on Wednesday that its members voted to strike over an ‘increasingly draconian management style’. The union said it had not yet set a date for strike action, but it would need to give at least seven days’ notice. The bus company is owned by the Go Ahead Group – the same company which partowns the Govia Thameslink franchise embroiled in union disputes. Janet Henney, Unite regional officer, said: “People
used to love working at Brighton and Hove Buses and it used to be held up as local model of good employment. “This simply is not the case anymore with many of our members dreading going into work. They have had enough of being bullied, intimidated and spied on when on sick leave and want to see an end to the ‘draconian’ management style which has created a culture of fear. “Unite urges senior management to stop paying lip service to good industrial relations and start making the firm the model employer it was once.” Martin Harris, managing director of Brighton and Hove Buses, said fewer than half the Unite members working at the company voted in the ballot so only 37 per cent actually voted for strike action. He asked
the union to ‘stop using inflammatory and over-thetop language’. He added that the management team had a successful meeting with Unite ‘many months ago’ where ‘a full suite of new employment policies’ to deal with allegations of bullying were put in place. He did not accept the drivers are bullied into working overtime. Mr Harris said: “Our drivers have a tough job and do it brilliantly, but it is their prerogative to say no to overtime offers, and that is absolutely respected by us. “I sincerely apologise to all our customers for the anxiety this situation must be causing them and any disruption that may result. I will of course do everything I can to keep our customers informed of any plans that will impact on their services.”
Pay dispute at Coperforma Staff working in Sussex’s patient transport service could strike in September over an estimated total of £45,000 unpaid back-pay. Coperforma took over the contract from South East Coast Ambulance Service back in April and since then patients have complained about numerous incidents of crews either not turning up or showing up late. When VM Langfords, one of the company’s subcontractors, went into administration earlier this year, Coperforma had to step in to guarantee staff
would receive back-pay, but the GMB union claims that its members have been told they have to wait as long as six months to receive outstanding payments. These include overtime and unsocial hours pay, holiday pay, and pension contributions, and in a ballot 92 per cent of GMB members who voted supported further action. Gary Palmer, GMB regional organiser, said “This ballot result should be seen by Coperforma and Docklands Medical Services as a clear warning that even the most dedicated,
caring and loyal staff can only be pushed so far. The working agreement between employees and should be simple – our members are expected to turn up on time, carry out their duties professionally and to the best of their ability. In return their employer should at the very least ensure that the remuneration staff get for those duties is correct and paid on time.” Coperforma has been approached for comment but did not respond as the Brighton & Hove Independent went to press.

Corbyn is ‘very concerned’ about suspension of city Labour party PHOTOGRAPH: JULIA CLAXTON

Jeremy Corbyn told more than 1,000 of his supporters in Brighton that he was ‘very concerned’ about the suspension of the local Labour Party. The Labour leader spoke at a sold-out rally at the Hilton Metropole on Tuesday evening, where more than 1,000 people turned out to hear him speak –s but not before he addressed hundreds of supporters at Regency Square. At the rally, Mr Corbyn was joined by Lloyd Russell-Moyle, the Labour candidate for East Brighton in Thursday’s council byelection, and vocal supporter Cllr Kevin Allen, alongside union members and other Corbyn supporters. Mr Corbyn said: “I am very concerned about the suspension of the party in Brighton. I’ve asked that it is investigated immediately.

party would be reinstated ‘as soon as possible’. The Brighton, Hove and District Labour Party was suspended following its annual meeting, which saw the election of Corbyn

supporters to the local party’s executive committee. But just days later, Labour’s national executive committee (NEC) said it had concerns over alleged abuse, safety, and the way ballots were reached.
Corbynite councillor ‘rare breed’ in the city
It annulled the election results, which will now take place after the national leadership election, where Corbyn will go up against Owen Smith. Mr Corbyn tackled other issues in his speech at the Metropole, including Southern Rail, and the chaos for commuters. He said the government should ‘take the whole company back into public ownership for the benefit of everybody along that line’. “That is Labour’s policy,” Mr Corbyn said, to cheers from the crowd. “Surely we can do things a lot better.” He also addressed the housing crisis, and said: “Brighton has now inherited the housing problems in London, with the level of rent increasing and the shortage of houses.” Mr Corbyn praised the Labour-led Brighton and Hove City Council for its work onhousinginthecity, butsaid only a Labour government could solve the problem.
Outspoken city councillor Kevin Allen joined the Corbyn rally and said the reasons behind the suspension of the local party were ‘nonsense’. Speaking at the rally, the Labour councillor for Preston Park said: “I am a specimen of a rare breed. A Corbynsupporting Brighton and Hove city councillor. There are in fact rumours that there may be one or two more but no confirmed sightings have been reported.” Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour group on the city council is vocal about his opposition to Corbyn, and is backing Owen Smith for leader. Cllr Allen also criticised Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove, and said ‘he and other MPs have forced this totally unnecessary leadership election’. An audience member shouted out that Mr Kyle should be deselected and Mr Corbyn has since been criticised by local councillors and Labour MPs for his silence on the matter.

Tackling isolation with yellow roses Brighton and Hove Impetus – a local befriending charity – launched its Yellow Rose campaign on Saturday. The charity created a citywide celebration focused on ‘connecting friends and Building Communities’ using yellow roses as its emblem to represent friendship.
Residents and visitors were handed yellow roses with the aim to raise awareness about loneliness and isolation. Residents and visitors also got the opportunity to ‘Meet the Mayor’, and Cllr Pete West spent time speaking to people about the campaign in the Pavilion Gardens.

Delivery drivers urged to lock up
Freeing up parking spaces in crackdown
Police have warned drivers in Brighton to lock their vehicles when delivering goods to businesses, after a number of theft incidents in the city. On July 26 more than £500 cash was stolen from the glovebox of a vehicle parked in Terminus Road, a rucksack was taken from a delivery vehicle in Jubilee Street on Saturday (July 30) and a wallet, cash and mobile phone was stolen from a vehicle parked in Duke Street on Sunday (July 31). Sergeant Chris Durrant said: “We are asking for delivery drivers and the public to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police.”
Council officers will be on the look out for caravans, boats and burger vans parked on the street, in a crackdown to free up parking spaces. The council voted to take action by using the Highways Act 1980 in June, which gives it the power to request the removal of ‘non-motorised vehicles’ parked on the street. In the first instance a notice will be attached to the trailer requesting its removal. If it remains a month later, a second notice will warn of its removal in 28 days. A charge will be made for the return of a trailer. Unclaimed vehicles will be sold or scrapped.
Celebrating the natural landscape Campaign group 38 Degrees and charity Campaign for National Parks celebrated the UK’s most beautiful landscapes on Saturday, hosting free walks and natural land art workshops at every national park in the country. The theme for the series of events were ‘inspired by nature’ and brought together experts from the natural
world and the arts. Brighton and Hove saw its own celebration at the South Downs National Park on Devils Dyke, where land artist Mark Ford and craftsman Marcus Clear ran a mandala workshop for 60 people in collaboration with The National Trust, The South Downs Society and Produce UK.

A Radical View
By Tony Greenstein
Private interests are taking over the NHS
A
s Joni Mitchell wrote in Big Yellow Taxi, you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. Nowhere is this more true than with the NHS. For nearly 70 years we have had a health service that is free at the point of delivery. People pay for it through their taxation and use it when they need to. It is an island of socialism within capitalism. The Conservative ‘reforms’ of the NHS is leading to a health service based on private insurance. This means private insurance companies commissioning and paying for health resources as happens in the United States. Far from being efficient, American health services are vastly more costly than the NHS because health care companies ramp up their costs to increase their profits at the same time as they seek to cut costs. That leads to the absurd situation where poverty stricken Cuba has a lower infant mortality rate than the United States. In the USA insurance companies are presently refusing to pay for the new revolutionary treatments for hepatitis, which cure over 90 per cent of patients.
Why? Because the drug companies charge nearly $100,000 dollars for a three-month course. Patients have had to band together to fight class action suits against the insurance companies. Another trick is to refuse to pay out to people with pre-existing complaints and of course if you are already ill you may not even be able to get insurance. I attended a large public meeting a month ago at St George’s Church where a number of doctors, including Caroline Lucas MP, spoke about their fears for the future of the NHS. The Government has introduced a Sustainability and Transformation Plan. It has no legal basis but it will accelerate the contracting out and running of NHS services by private companies. Already 40 per cent of new contracts in the NHS are with private companies. Under the guise of ‘modernisation’, the STP’s primary purpose is to reduce expenditure in the NHS by £30 billion by 2020. In 2015-16 NHS hospitals ‘overspent’ by £2.5 billion. Despite promises to the contrary, funding has not increased. Coupled with a shortage of GPs, the new
Clinical Commissioning Groups are cutting the treatments they will pay for. We have fewer beds per capita than most of Europe and because of the lack of social care many of them are unavailable. With the emphasis on cutting expenditure through the use of control budgets it is clear that something has to give. In addition, nursing bursaries which help fund trainee nurses have been abolished. We have seen the results of contracting out services in the performance of Coperforma which took over the nonemergency transport services for local hospitals in Sussex. Elderly people were left waiting for hours and patients waiting for kidney dialysis sessions missed their appointments. A perfectly good service run by the hospital has become the equivalent of Southern Rail because of the insistence on privatisation. When Practice Group plc decided it would no longer be profitable to run surgeries in Brighton and Hove this led to the closure of the Willows surgery in Bevendean, which now has no surgery. Following the passage of the Health and Social Care Act 2012, there is no legal
duty on the government to even provide a national health service. The NHS Reinstatement Bill of Caroline Lucas aimed to remedy this situation but it failed to make headway owing to a lack of support from MPs such as our own Peter Kyle. The five-year future review of Simon Stephens, the NHS Chief Executive and former CEO at United Health Care, one of the largest private healthcare companies in America, is driven by cost cutting. Stephen aims to increase the involvement of the private sector in the NHS under the guise of efficiency. Local A&Es will be closed in favour of large out of town hospitals and private run specialist centres. The consensus between New Labour and Conservatives led to the present situation whereby a publicly run NHS is being taken over by private interests. The use of market mechanisms and the Clinical Commissioning Groups to buy in services is leading to a situation in which facilities that are deemed too costly, like sexual health, will simply not be provided. If people don’t wake up, the NHS as we know it will be gone.

Government cuts are hitting the city’s rough sleepers
L
ast week I joined St Mungo’s who do outreach work with people sleeping rough in our city. We walked through our main streets, church yards, squares, and along the beach looking out for people who are homeless and sleeping outside. It was alarming to see just how many people there were. I was able to see how the team operates. They gently wake people up and carefully glean the information needed to ensure they get the right support. Most people are already known to either St Mungo’s or another local agency and this is all checked using electronic devices. It’s amazing how many people were very well known to the outreach workers, how trusting the relationship is, and how brilliant they were at arranging the next steps to getting them the support they need to improve their health and move towards more secure accommodation. In the past I have also work shadowed police outreach teams and I learned then that as well as being a prolific source of low-level crime, rough sleepers are also very highly susceptible towards becoming the victims of crime too. Assault and rape is far too common. One police officer got tearful telling me about a case where a homeless man was set alight by drunk people leaving a nightclub once. A local doctor believe that 50 homeless people have died in this city in the last three years alone. When you accept just how brutal life on the streets is, and just how vulnerable rough sleepers are, it makes
my blood boil at the rise in homelessness that we’re seeing once again. Most of the people I met were men in their 30s or early 40s. So many of them were fully functional adults in work until one or two things went seriously wrong and life spiralled quickly downwards. Thanks to the central government cuts to community services, charities, and frontline public services, too many people are no longer caught in the safety net of our welfare state and end up out of work, out on the streets, and exposed to terrible indignity and dangers that noone should have to face. Soon the government will make it even harder for rough sleepers to make the journey into secure accommodation because they are about to reform the Local Housing Allowance. It will mean that many homeless people who commit to a pathway into supported living will not be able to have enough government funding to cover the costs. And, you guessed it, due to cuts to local council grants and to frontline charities, there is no other money in the system to subsidise it. That’s why we’ve seen local hostels shutting down right at the time when the numbers of people needing them are going up. I want to be a better advocate for those caught in this terrible, dangerous, and heartbreaking situation. I’ll be working closely with St Mungo’s, Off The Fence, First Base and other brilliant charities to see how I can make that happen. We simply accept this growing problem as a somehow ‘normal’ part of modern life in Brighton and Hove.

Labour councillor and council leader
My choice for the Labour leadership
O
n the first weekend of his campaign to be Leader of the Labour Party, I invited Owen Smith MP down to Brighton and Hove. We spoke to some residents together in my ward, I talked to him about some of our key local issues, and then he explained what he stands for to a group of Labour campaigners who had joined us for the afternoon. Owen knows the city well, having studied here, but comes from a long tradition of Welsh politicians including Neil Kinnock and his political hero, Nye Bevan. I’ve met a fair few leading politicians over the past 30 years, and Owen struck me as one of the most down to earth and honest. We share a strong belief in prosperity for all, his anti-austerity and pro-prosperity message chiming with my oft-repeated goal of ensuring everyone in our city shares in the economic success of Brighton and Hove. Like me, he wants to see many more truly affordable homes built for people that desperately need them, truly affordable homes, one and a half million over five years. Owen has spoken out for fairer taxes and fairer funding for local services; something much needed as our council faces Conservative Government cuts of more than 40 per cent. That’s money we need to pay for the services you use and expect from us as a council. He’d boost funding for the NHS by 4 per cent, bringing it up to the European average within four years of a Labour government being elected. He’s pledged a British New Deal, investing £200 billion in infrastructure projects that could include improvements to our rail links to London. He’d fund this by reversing the Tory cuts to Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Corporation Tax that have only benefited a few at the top. He’d reinstate the 50p top rate of tax and introduce a new tax on the wealthiest

one per cent. We all want to succeed, we all aspire to better, but we should all have that opportunity, not see it restricted to a few. The current government, whoever leads it, has not spread the wealth. Owen Smith would. This country needs a decent opposition. It needs a credible, realistic alternative government with broad appeal. It needs an opposition leader who could be Prime Minister, someone we can trust. I think Owen Smith is far more that person than the current incumbent Jeremy Corbyn. Opinion polls rate him as the most unpopular opposition leader in history, presiding over a party some 16 points behind the Conservatives.
Were the new Tory Prime Minister to force an election now, she would increase her majority from 12 to more than 150. People talk about building a movement, about crowds at rallies and about not compromising their political beliefs. I believe politics should be about more than trying to pressure the government into changing their policies. I believe politics should be about being in government, delivering change every day for the people who need it most. Not the banner wavers at demonstrations, but the families struggling quietly on low wages in poor housing. Labour was founded as a party to win power in Parliament for ordinary people, not as a protest movement.
I spent eight long years in opposition on the city council, and alongside my Labour colleagues I worked long and hard to become leader of the council so I could change things for the better. I can be outvoted by the opposition, and the financial situation is terrible, but with my team united behind me I can still make a difference. We could do so much more with a Labour government; jobs, homes, training, investment, innovation and ambition, prosperity for all. If you have a vote in the Labour leadership election, or know someone that does, please help us to make that difference, make that change, and support Owen Smith.

Improved library services and an ace new attraction
H
aving spent much of the last few months discussing the future location of Hove library, it is great to be able to report that this month sees the roll out of Libraries Extra, a new innovation that will improve the service offered at all the city’s libraries. The new service makes a mockery of the Labour group’s claims during the Hove Library saga that by voting to retain it in the Carnegie building, we would effectively be condemning as many as seven of the city’s branch libraries to closure. We said at the time that this was the worst kind of political scaremongering, as Labour would have known full well that these extended 0pening hours at all the city’s libraries were to be rolled out within a matter of weeks. My replies to the many letters and emails I received imploring me to agree to the selling of the Hove Library building as the only option to save our other libraries in Brighton and Hove were proved correct that Labour had absolutely no basis by which to make such preposterous and alarming claims. Let us not forget that Labour are a minority-led administration and so must always also gain the support of either the Green group or the Conservative group in order to push any such plans through. I knew that this is something they would definitely not achieve as the Greens and we were firmly united on saving Hove Library. In terms of the new Libraries Extra service, simply by upgrading to a free Libraries Extra Membership Card, residents will now be able to use their local community library, even outside of staffed hours. This will mean that most libraries will
Children’s books at Woodingdean Library
now be available seven days a week, more than doubling the amount of opening hours across the city from 362 to 768 hours per week. I was always incredibly frustrated that Patcham Library in my ward, despite being the third most popular library in the city (after the Jubilee and Hove Libraries), was only open for three days a week. This always seemed to me to be a real waste of a much-valued local resource, but now, with the Libraries Extra scheme, residents will be able to benefit from it seven days a week. Another innovative launch this week, and yet another example of a Labour u-turn, was of course the British Airways i360, which made its long-awaited debut ascent on Wednesday. Having been a supporter of this project from day one, I am very proud to have played a par in enabling it to happen and being able to see it right through to the end. It has been somewhat confusing however to read articles from members of the Labour group attempting to ride on the coat-tails of the fantastic achievement that is the British Airways i360 when only a year or so ago the Labour group were firmly against it and refused to vote or it. It has been fascinating to watch the tower being built over the last year or so and the management team, led by Eleanor Harris the chief executive, deserve a huge amount of credit for completing such a complex project on time. The i360 will raise the city’s profile on
the national and international stage and at a time of economic uncertainty, this will be invaluable. I was lucky enough to take a ‘voyage’ to the top of the tower and it was absolutely fantastic. I wish Eleanor and her team every success.

On This Day Saturday August 5 1826 The Royal Albion Hotel, designed by A H Wilds, opened its doors for visitors for the first time. Following the demolition of Russell House three years earlier, the town commissioners agreed to pay £3,000 to John Colbatch to preserve the site as an open space. The deal was delayed, and never concluded, and the hotel was built. The Albion became
‘Royal’ around 1847 but by 1900 it was in a very dilapidated condition and closed down. In 1913 it was purchased for £13,500 by the charismatic Harry Preston – the Proprietor of the nearby Royal York – who restored the fortunes of the famous building attracting the famous figures of the day, especially in art, literature, sport and entertainment. Fire destroyed the top floors of the hotel in 1998

The Girl from Lace Island by Joanna Rees Oh my goodness! This has to be the perfect beach read. Sophisticated, glamorous, romantic and gripping. And with a rather beautiful cover that you won’t mind being seen with. There are two women, decades apart, their lives tangled with love and betrayal that are unknowingly linked through a tiny exotic island off the coast of India. In 1989, Leila who has known nothing but happiness on Lace Island, helping her mother keep her high flying glamorous guests happy is sent to boarding school in cold grey England. That’s when her troubles really start. Then, in 2016 we meet Jess who dreams of far off places and keeps a tattered poster on her wall of a beach with white sand, blue seas and palm trees. After the death of her best friend she finally gets her dream job as cabin crew, perhaps taking her to those places that she has only ever seen in pictures before. But then she meets the seemingly perfect Blaise, who captures her heart in a whirlwind relationship that catapults her into the world of the unscrupulous super rich. The two women meet up years later under extraordinary circumstances. I defy anyone not to enjoy this epic tale; it will have you reaching for your cold drink under the sun umbrella and slathering suntan lotion on whilst turning the pages. This is a big hearted book that leaves you walking on sunshine. Joanna Rees will be appearing at The Bookish Supper Salon on September 14 . Tickets from Tabl. com
Volunteers enjoy a celebration dinner A celebration dinner was held to thank the volunteers of FareShare Sussex, who provide invaluable support to the city’s homeless. Brighton Housing Trust’s First Base Day Centre hosted the event on July 30. Established in 2002, FareShare Sussex saves surplus food destined for waste and redistributes it across the region to organisations which transform it into nutritious meals for vulnerable and marginalised groups.
First Base Day Centre offers a comprehensive range of services to support people who are sleeping rough, including basic, lifesustaining necessities such as showers, clean and dry clothes, and company. Clients are supported to access physical and mental health services, accommodation, and work and learning opportunities. Volunteers enjoyed a selection of Indian food, and were thanked by David Nixon from First Base Day Centre.

P
lay time is here! Many of you will be getting ready for Pride or camping in a more traditional sense at festivals. I’m off to The Wilderness with The Odditorium crew. Along with bubbly and the bell tent I will be hauling wipes and anti bac. I don’t normally buy either, but you don’t need to say portacabin more than once to think twice about what to carry. I’m packing Natracare natural organic cotton intimate wipes. These products avoid petrochemical-derived, skin irritating ingredients - certified 100 percent pure organic cotton by the Soil Association, not tested on animals and suitable for Vegans. The wipes and solution ingredients are both derived from natural, renewable and sustainable resources (biodegradable and compostable will not necessarily equate to

being flushable). Each £1.99 12-pack is enriched with calendula and chamomile to gently cleanse delicate areas – carry one for sorrow and two for joy! Similarly, Bentley Organic Hand Sanitizer kills 99.9 percent of bacteria using only natural ingredients. Free from SLS, parabens and alcohol this gentle skin foam is tough on germs. Organic Lemon Oil hygienically cleans to leave hands wonderfully fresh. £4 for up to 125 applications in a leak proof 50ml tube (this will migrate to my dog walking bag when I get back and another stays in the car, they last for ages). Yes to Carrots fragrancefree wipes have nourishing and hydrating ingredients to moisturise and clean the face. Dermatologist-tested gentle formulas keep normal to dry skin hydrated with compostable, natural cloths
that are free of parabens, petroleum and SLS – £3.99 for 25 wipes. Burt Bees handy Lip Crayons have won Best New Makeup Product For Lips at the 2016 CEW Awards. The six creamy, full-coverage matte colour shades are £8.99 each, and the portable sticks are infused with shea butter, kendi oil, and jojoba oil, full of omega 3’s for a proper pucker without flavour or fragrance. Napa Vineyard is an easy red to blur as a stain or blush and it sharpens itself to build a more defined night look. If are passing Infinity Foods on North Road, don’t forget to nip in to see Kenia and colleagues demonstrating Sukin skin care between 11.30am-4pm this Friday and Saturday. You might win goodies including Sukin Night Cream, Eye Serum, Facial Scrub, Foaming Facial Cleanser and Facial Moisturiser (worth £65).

Big wins at poker for city players Three Brighton poker players scooped more than £50,000 in prize money when they took three of the top four places in a major Texas Hold ‘Em tournament. Professional player James Dempsey took the title in the two-day partypoker Grand Prix Poker Tour event boasting a prize pool of £191,000, held at the Amex Stadium. The 33-year-old won £30,500 and the trophy after battling through more than 2,000 players. James, who has won more than £2 million since he started playing fulltime 14 years ago, is also a massive Brighton football fan and delighted to play the tournament at the home of the Seagulls. He said: “It’s incredible that the event was played out just a few feet from where my season ticket in the West Stand. I usually only ever play poker tournaments in casinos - I hope Brighton will have had similar success in nine months time.” Taking third place was Seth Webber, 35, another full-time

player, who was cheered on by his partner, 26-year-okd bar manager Mirka Beresova. The couple live in Hove. Seth won £12,200. But the biggest smile of the day was on the face of 25-year-old James Alsop from Portslade, who won £9,120 after entering the tournament for free. He played his Day One online on Friday evening but thanks to a partypoker promotion they refunded the £83 entry fees to everyone
who took part. The youngster, who works for the DVLA, and lives with his poker-playing partner, Shana Casaletto, 42, said he couldn’t be happier. “It’s fantastic. It hasn’t cost me a penny to take part and I am going home with more than £9,000. What a result!” The partypoker Grand Prix Poker Tour of football clubs is next being held at Cardiff, on September 3-4. For full details visit: WWW. GPPT.POKER

New restaurants open their doors at marina PHOTOGRAPH: JULIA CLAXTON

Five new restaurants have opened their doors at Brighton Marina in the past month and there are two more to come. High street favourites Las Iguanas, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Casa Brasil, TGI Fridays and Bella Italia are now all open for business and will soon be joined by MOD Pizzas and fast casual restaurant Five Guys. There was a distinctly South American vibe at a special Las Iguanas launch event, featuring some suitably attired carnival girls and a masterclass in caipirinha-making – Brazil’s national cocktail. The Brazilian-themed restaurant is the chain’s second in Brighton and located on the recently built £250 million outer harbour marina development. Popular Italian chain Bella Italia has also set up shop on the new spacious marina boardwalk. The new Bella Italia Brighton Marina is serving up your Italian favourites such as creamy carbonara and lasagne and new additions

GBK’s marina location features an impressive view of the sea with a fully opened shopfront so customers can enjoy the best views. Next Thursday (August 11) MOD Pizza is bringing a superfast, made-to-order pizza and salad outlet to the Marina. To celebrate its grand opening, MOD will host a weekend of activities including pizza and beer giveaways and raffles, dance performances by Marina Studios dance crews, face painting and balloon art. As part of MOD’s community outreach, the Brighton restaurant has partnered with Rocking Horse, a Brighton-based charity supporting children, as their charity partner for the opening day. MOD has pledged that 100 per cent of all food sales on the day will be donated to the charity which aims to make life better for sick children and babies.
Search is on for the best food producers The Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2017 team is looking to find the best Sussex street food vendors, new food businesses, farmers and young chefs. The public has until Monday, September 8 to put forward their favourites from across the county or to nominate themselves. Paula Seager, co-director of Natural Partnerships CIC which runs the awards, said: “We want to shout out to anyone who knows a superb farmer who does something extra special for Sussex food production; an ambitious and skilful young chef aged under 25; an exciting newcomer to the local food and drink
industry; or an amazing street food vendor to nominate them at sussexfoodawards.biz by the September 8 – without them on the list we may miss the food heroes out there who deserve to be recognised.” When online nomination closes, the independent judging panel, headed by local farmer William Goodwin, will contact those entered to take part in the next stage. The ten finalists for each of the other six categories were announced at Ridgeview Wine Estate on July 4, and online public voting is open until September 24. The winners will be announced at the Amex Stadium on February 1. PHOTOGRAPH: SIMON DACK/VERVATE

Young entrepreneur’s business goes from strength to strength
Celebration after new city hotel opens its doors in Kemptown
Finding that certain, special party novelty can be a tricky business, but Chit Chat Celebrations has exploded onto the market with its unique party crackers. Young Brighton-based entrepreneur Aadam Patel, who is just 15 years old, spotted a gap in the market at an early age when friends and family were celebrating religious festivals and grew his business idea from there. A seaside city that is ‘defined by its buildings’- old and new
Exploring Brighton and Hove through its architecture and most unusual structures Shuaib Shafi and Bex Bastable
news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy
As the city’s newest landmark - the British Airways i360 opens to the public this week, anewbookexploringBrighton and Hove’s architecture hits the shelves. ‘Brighton and Hove in 50 Buildings’ looks at the rich and diverse architectural history of the city, unearthing the stories behind the buildings, its people and their lives. Meticulously researched and illustrated with historical photographs; the book shows how this ‘queen of watering places’ was not only influenced by royal elites, but also by workers, go-getters and criminals. It explains how the small fishing village transformed into a seaside resort for the wealthy, and the book covers buildings from royal retreats to crumbling cottages. Author Kevin Newman, a historian and teacher said: “I’m a Brightonian who is passionate about sharing what is best about the city, to both our numerous visitors and residents who want to find out more about this incredible place. “The list of 50 buildings was tough to compile, I had so many favourites with stories to tell, or that were hidden away and I felt needed more people knowing about.” All the obvious sites are featured, such as the Palace Pier, The Royal Pavilion, the Clock Tower, as well as the Grand Hotel and Brighton Town Hall. New buildings also appear, including Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium and, of course, the British Airways i360.
I had so many favourites with stories to tell, or that were hidden away KEVIN NEWMAN Author Brighton and Hove in 50 Buildings But there are some lesser known buildings – and their stories – hidden within the book. Mr Newman he has ‘triedtoinspireeventheoldest Brightonian to find buildings they have never noticed, or at least to look at them again with a fresh perspective’. One such example is Portslade’s old police station. Unknown to many, it was a key British defence facility in the Cold War era. Along with its Edwardian cells, it also contains a decontamination centre, that although never used, would have been where civilians and soldiers would have been sent in the event of a Russian nuclear attack. The rail road clocking-in building at New England Road appears in the book – and the author reveals it played an important role in the city manufacturing industry up until the war-period. Used as a clocking-in shed, workers would climb its steps to work on the railway. In inter-war years saw a steady decline, and by the 1950, the shed ceased to be in use. It is now
abandoned, but presides as a reminder of Brighton’s once great rail industry. The Royal Albion Hotel is described as ‘the spiritual heart of bathing resort Brighton’ by the author, and celebrates its 190th birthday this year. Although it’s not the oldest hotel in the city that accolade goes to The Old Ship Hotel - it was the home of Dr Richard Russell - who promoted the seaside visit, and was a player in making the city what it is today. Embassy Court is described by the author as ‘a wonderful building but a misplaced location’. The 11-storey artdeco building sits alongside Regency architecture on Hove seafront, and was built in 1936, and ‘led the way for the horrible 1960s buildings that plagued the town’, Mr Newman said. The dilapidated Madeira Terraces feature in the book, with past images giving a glimpse to what it could like if it was restored to its former glory. In fact, the author says: ‘Hopefully the council’s recently published plans to restore it will be successful as we cannot let it become another West Pier debacle.” And of course, the West Pier takes its place in the book, where the author says ‘hopefully its sea-battered skeleton can still be the basis of a future restoration and a new West Pier’. The book gives a round-up of the best, the quirkiest, and the most unusual architecture that makes Brighton and Hove what it is, giving a glimpse into the character of the city in the past and present. All-male cast present a tragic tale of revenge Theatre Hamlet
Brighton Open Air Theatre Wednesday, August 31
Festival Players Theatre Company promises a dynamic all-male production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The show is at Brighton Open Air Theatre on Wednesday, August 31. Spokeswoman Su Gilroy said: “Thought to have been first performed in 1600 and possibly the greatest tragedy in the English language, Hamlet is a story of revenge. Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, is haunted by the ghost of his father, who tells him that he was murdered by his own brother, Claudius. Claudius not only wears the late king’s crown but has also married his wife,
Gertude, Hamlet’s mother. Hamlet has lost his father and his opportunity to be king, and possibly his sanity; can he believe the ghost, and if so how should he exact revenge? And who else will suffer along the way? “Festival Players Artistic Director Michael Dyer has brought the play, the bard’s longest, to a manageable length of two hours in the company’s trademark accessible format.” Michael said: “Our shows are an amalgam of energy, entertainment and colour and we aim to make them clear and transparent, as well as keeping them short for the comfort of our patrons. “We set out to take audiences of all ages on a journey and make them
feel very much part of the production. “A small cast of six play multiple roles demanding quick costume changes, as well as performing as singers and musicians. This gives an exciting opportunity for the actors to show their energy and versatility.” This will be Michael’s 12th all-male production in a row for the Players. “It is, of course, totally authentic. We are following in the footsteps of Shakespeare’s own Globe Theatre when all roles were taken by men. The Players have built a reputation for strong, all-male shows over the past eleven years.” To find out more about the company, visit: www. thefestivalplayers.co.uk/ tour.
‘Go Wild in the Country’ with Annabella Music
Macmillan Cancer Sup pport, registered charity in England and Wales (261017), Scotland (SC C039907) and the Isle of Man (604).
FamilyEnts presents Annabella’s Bow Wow Wow at Concorde 2, Brighton, on Tuesday, August 9 (7.30pm). Spokeswoman Kairen Kemp said: “Annabella Lwin, at the tender age of 14, was one of the most photographed, talked about and popular vocalists in the early ’80s with her band, Bow Wow Wow, who enjoyed success with massive hits
such as ‘I Want Candy’, ‘Do U wanna Hold Me?’ and ‘Go Wild in the Country’. “Her unique vocals swung between sweet 14 and banshee squeals, and memorable performances reflected an energetic pop culture. Bow Wow Wow were a quartet organized by UK manager Malcolm McLaren (Sex Pistols) at the start of the ’80s. McLaren formed the new band with two of Adam Ant’s
original musicians Matthew Ashman, Dave Barbe and new recruit Leigh Gorman. “Singers were auditioned, and they decided on a teenage girl named Annabella. The band lasted three years. Performing low-key shows on both sides of the Atlantic the new millennium found Annabella also expanding and employing her talents as a songwriter.” Tickets on 01273 673311.

Two days of superb alternative music Music
Undercover Festival Brighton Racecourse September 9-10
The fourth Undercover Festival takes place on Friday and Saturday, September 9-10, at Brighton Racecourse. With two days packed full of the finest alternative music the venue will be rocking the sounds of punk, ska, dub, reggae, post-punk, alt, acoustic and plenty more. Weather-proof, fiercely independent and friendly, this popular event draws together the crème of local and national acts, old and new. Although the only festival in Brighton to have onsite camping, every stage at Undercover benefits from being indoors. So even the worst of the British weather won’t affect the party. The nature of the venue also ensures that everything is nearby. There are no long walks between stages, parking is free and
camping is available literally a one-minute walk from the festivities. Undercover Festival’s headline acts include: The Selecter, Dreadzone, Spear Of Destiny, Sonic Boom Six, Eddie and The Hot Rods, Peter & The Test Tube Babies, plus an exceptional supporting line-up. Festival organiser Mick Moriarty said: “We have tried to book as many bands from, or linked to, Brighton & Hove and the south coast as realistically possible. I suppose it would be rude not too… “It would be difficult to ignore the live music scene this area has to offer, as the range of talented artists locally is breathtaking.” He continued: “Undercover Festival is back with more stages and bands than ever before at our new home, Brighton Racecourse. “We are pleased to be able to move to Brighton, a city that is renowned for its appreciation of alternative,
‘outside the box’ music and we are proud to add our festival to Brighton’s rich and varied culture.” Other bands lined up for the festival include: 999, Chelsea, Sex Pistols Experience, Xslf (X Stiff Little Fingers), The Tuts, The Meow Meows, Rage DC, Xtraverts, Emergency Bitter, Mick O’Toole, Riskee And The Ridicule, Phoenix Chroi, Knock Off, Sweet Jonny, Demon Smiles, The Fanzines, Archive 45, The Marginal, Ray Gun, No Lip, Echo & The Beats, Pig City Angels, Harsh Times, The Disinclined and many more. Friday’s headliners The Selecter are an anarchic 2 Tone ska revival band from Coventry. In the past few years they have played at major festivals, headlined three UK tours and recorded three studio albums, the latest of which, Subculture, is mixed by UK dub-master Prince Fatty. Saturday headliners Dreadzone are electro-dub
Dreadzone
pioneers who are still going strong after over 20 years in the game. They re-issued their classic 2001 album Sound on their own Dubwiser label last year and continue to tour extensively throughout the UK and Europe.
General admission tickets cost £75 in advance for the two days (£90 on the door). Alternatively, people can purchase two-day tickets with camping for £85 in advance (£100 on the door). Family tickets are no longer available.
Day tickets for Friday cost £40 in advance and day tickets for Saturday cost £45 in advance. Visit undercoverfest.com to find out more about the festival. Tickets are available online, by post or at shops in Brighton.
Raw and soulful tunes from the American Midwest Music
Charlie Parr will headline Bleach in Brighton on August 14 on the back of his first fullband album. Spokesman James Wallace said: “Songwriter/guitarist Charlie has joined the roster of Red House Records for his latest studio album, Stumpjumper, (out August 5). “Long a part of the vibrant Duluth music scene, Charlie travelled to North Carolina to record the album with fellow musician Phil Cook. As well as being the first album Charlie has recorded outside of his native Minnesota, it’s the first to feature a full band. “Percussive and raw, the 11 songs on Stumpjumper, ten originals and his version of the venerable murder ballad, Delia, could be lost field recordings from another era. “His blistering picking – he switches between acoustic guitar, dobro and banjo – and cut-through-the-crowdvocals resonate with a conviction that runs deep and true. It’s the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up listening to his dad’s recordings of America’s musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin’ Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.
PicturebyJasonRosewarne
“Parr’s inspiration is drawn from the alternatelyfertile and frozen soil of Minnesota; his songs exude a Midwestern sensibility and humility. Parr grew up in the Hormel meatpacking city of Austin, where most of the world’s favourite tinned meat, Spam, is still manufactured. The combination of growing up with both of his parents working proud union jobs in an industrial meat factory and his largely rural environment had a broad impact on Parr.” Charlie himself explains: “Every morning you’d hear the factory whistles blow. When I was a kid they had the stockyards and animals there, so you were surrounded by this
atmosphere. Out the back door were soybean fields, as far as the eye could see. As a kid I thought it was kind of boring, but now I go and visit my mom and I think it’s the most beautiful landscape there is.” The songs are inspired by family members, the Bible, overheard conversations and places in his life. The title track finds Charlie tapping into his childhood. “Songs aren’t normally very autobiographical for me. They’re more like stories, but this one is different. I can see a 1966 International Harvester pickup truck with no hood and four snow tires, breaking field road landspeed records on my way to my job in a filling station.” ‘Empty Out Your Pockets’ is a song Parr describes as “another angry hymn.” “All of the ones I’ve written so far seem to rely on God being a kind of big brother who shows up one day after you’ve been getting your a** kicked all over town by bullies and he takes care of business. I know, it’s juvenile, but take a close look at a lot of legitimate hymns – ‘when I die I’m gonna tell God what you did to me’ comes to mind.”

“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” Those were the words of Oscar Wilde, which inspired a new theatre piece by a Brighton-based company Box Tracy Theatre Dance. And The Ugly is a piece by Nixx Strapp-Freeman and Susie Timney, where the pair explore the concept of friendship on-stage. Writing their second show for Camden Fringe, Nixx and Susie have written the piece in short “episodes” before piecing them together to form a compelling narrative that reflects the way life is shared over a series of conversations between friends. The pair also reached out to the community, by asking people to send in a anonymous letter to a friend.
And The Ugly
Susie said: “And the Ugly is an exploration of friendship. It has been written episodically to reflect the way people catch up with each other in sessions, maybe over a cup of tea or a glass of wine. We cover topics that friends would discuss: relationships, love, family, pressures, mental health, loss. It’s a broad range of topics, but they are all things that are relevant to us and present in our day to
day, so these are the things we wanted to share. We want our audiences to come and see something that they feel they can connect to, to see even a small element of what we do and think ‘I’ve been there’.” And The Ugly will be performed at Camden People’s Theatre from today (August 5) to Sunday from 9pm each day. ew words are as concerning to me when it comes to food as “Fusion” – in fact that is not limited to just food. Call me old fashioned but I like my food classic and flavour combinations tried and tested. Fusion is a term that conjures images of gimmicky Iceland ready meals, style over substance restaurants with no clear identity and spectacular failures on Masterchef. Worst of all it also makes me think of the equally as unpleasant term, “mash-up”. One Brighton restaurant that appears to have successfully fused two vastly different cuisines is Senor Buddha on London Road. Since opening around a year ago they have established themselves as one of the more unique restaurants in the city with their blend of Spanish tapas and Thai cuisine. Having not tried for myself I was pleased to receive an invite to pop down to the London Road and face my fusion fears. I made my way over to meet Senor Buddha’s owner Lee Shipley. I was surprised at the size of the restaurant when I arrived having pictured something much bigger in my mind. It is a tiny venue with enough seating for around 20 people, although Lee tells me they have crammed quite a few more in during special events. He based the restaurant on traditional Spanish Tapas bars which tend to be even smaller, but this space works for them. The menu is on a chalk board on the wall and everything is cooked before your eyes in the open kitchen – nowhere to hide here. I am amazed at how reasonable the prices are, the most expensive dish is £7.50. Lee also talks me through the really interesting wines they have to offer as well. He clearly knows his stuff and wants to share his enjoyment of food with his customers.

A delicious cauliflower steak
I sit at the open kitchen and the food quickly starts appearing. I start with a classic tortilla with capers that is served with a saffron curry sauce. The traditional Spanish tortilla is well constructed and pleasantly salty. The fragrant saffron curry sauce is mildly sweet and not overly hot, it’s a good dish – reminiscent of a top quality chips and curry sauce. Next up is a dish I probably wouldn’t order but am pleased was placed in front of me. It is a veggie dish of cauliflower “steak” and charred pineapple with a yellow curry sauce. I don’t particularly like pineapple, especially cooked, but this is fantastic. Well charred and with a healthy sprinkling of salt it is the star of the show. The flavours match well and I am starting to believe a little more in this fusion thing. Next up one of their non fusion dishes that has its origins firmly within one of the culinary cultures. Volcano chicken is a dish of chicken thighs that are served in a flaming whisky sauce. This was not a winner for me, I find whisky far too strong a flavour to be used in cooking and there is a fair amount of booze in the sauce. It has been cooked well but is just down to my personal preference. The next dish is, however, much
more to my tastes and one of the best I try. The ginger crab crusted cod served with a lime curry sauce is another well balanced dish with a generous serving of fish that is moist and meaty. The citrusy curry sauce is again not overpowering and goes extremely well with the fish. A plate of confit duck is good without completely wowing me, perhaps I’m not in the mood for poultry on this visit. The scallops with morcilla de burgos and a cauliflower and coconut puree is more to my liking. Morcilla de burgos is a Spanish black pudding made with rice and the combination of this with the scallops is a classic that works every time. The puree is well made and I am glad that there is not too much coconut as I am not a fan. I am feeling decidedly full at this point despite not finishing most of the dishes and Lee orders a serving of Calamari for us to share. I tentatively try a few and they are wonderfully light and soft with a deep squid ink sauce to balance out the sweetness. I also have a slither of their red wine braised octopus which is meltingly tender and extremely moreish. I finish with a glass of sherry whilst chatting to Lee as he looks after the steady stream of customers coming into the compact bar. We discuss their upcoming cocktail collaboration evening with Boho Gelato on the 14th August and I make a note in my diary to get a ticket. I leave feeling satisfied that fusion is safe in the hands of the team at Senor Buddha. This is not garish style over substance nonsense, it is properly tasty food that doesn’t cost the Earth. The causal nature of the venue means that you can pop in for just a couple of plates and a glass of wine or spend an evening there. They also do midweek two for one offers that are well worth a look. A great addition to the Brighton food scene and one that deserves all the praise that has been coming its way. Tom Flint writes a food blog Food Booze and Reviews at: www. foodboozeandreviews.com
hat we do in life echoes in eternity. Russell Crowe said that back in the days when he seemed like a nice bloke. At the time, he was portraying everyone’s second favourite gladiator. I’m Spartacus! Whereas Russell’s character was fictional, his emperors were straight out of the history books. I’m Spartacus! Go on, it’s your turn. Marcus Aurelius was the last of “the five good emperors”. He also wrote what is considered to be our best source material on ancient stoic philosophy. The gist is that everything is rooted in nature and, as such, one should use nature for guidance and inspiration. He sounds nice, doesn’t he? His son and successor, Commodus, was a pillock. Commodus was the first emperor to be born during the reign of their parent, or “born in the purple”. The purple refers to Tyrian purple. Tyrian as in from Tyre, Lebanon, not a Lannister. Tyrian purple is a dye extracted from sea snails. It was harvested by either “milking” the snails or crushing them. From 12,000 snails, just over one gram of dye could be collected. Snails hate Romans. Incidentally, royal blue is the same thing but from a different snail. Snails hate the monarchy too. And salt. And the French. Snails are hateful. During the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, there lived a Greek rhetorician and grammarian called Athenaeus. In an ancient version of “my mate fancies your mate”, Athenaeus said that Callimachus owned a book about cheesecake written by a Greek physician called Aegimius. Callimachus was a poet, a critic, and a scholar at a library, so it’s feasible that he had a cheesecake book written by a Greek physician called Aegimius. Pliny the Elder reckons that Aegimius lived for 200 years though, so perhaps what the Romans did for us is lie. Never mind. Don’t grumble. Give a whistle. And this’ll help things turn out for the best. And... Always look on the bright side of life. So the ancient Greeks invented the recipe for cheesecake; the Romans wrote it down; the English wrote it down again but attributed it to a King (Richard II), and then the Americans joined in and it was game over. In 1872, a New Yorker invented commercial cream cheese. Let’s go back to Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife for a comment on that - “At my signal, unleash hell”. Thanks, Russell, and while you’re here, The Water Diviner was a real waste of my time. “Are you not entertained?” No.

Good times are returning to Alfa by jonathan crouch
A rear-wheel drive, midengined sports car based around a lightweight carbon fibre chassis?
That’ll be a McLaren or a Lamborghini, right? That’s usually the case but Alfa’s £50,000 4C sports coupe joins that club, offered in coupe or Spider guises writes Jonathan Crouch, of www. caranddriving.com. With a turbocharged 1.7-li-
tre engine behind the driver and a serious power to weight ratio, thegoodtimeslooktobe returning to Alfa Romeo. One figure tells you a lot about the 4C’s potential. Its power to weight ratio is 259bhp per tonne. That’s right up there with powerhouses like the BMW M3 CSL, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo FQ-400 and the Audi RS5. Heck, it even beats the L a m b o r g h i n i C o u nt a c h LP500S. All of that comes courtesy ofanall-aluminium,direct-in-
jection four-cylinder 1750cc turbocharged petrol engine that makes 240bhp and is assisted by the 4C’s kerb weight of just 925kg. That’s about the same as a Lotus Exige, so you know that this is quite a special beast. It gets to 62mph in 4.5 seconds, which takes a Cayman S’s trousers down quite easily, drive being deployed via a sixspeed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. The gearchange is 30 per cent quicker in Dynamic or Racemodesandthecleverrevmatching ability of the engine
ensures that shifts are quick and smooth without any unnecessary dramatics. There’s a lot of performance but also more flexibility than you might expect from such a small engine, with its best work coming between 2,000 and 5,000rpm. The exhaust note has been tuned for a raucous effect and thiscombinedwiththewastegate sound effects means that you won’t miss an approaching4C.Thesteeringisentirely unassisted. ROADTEST:TOYOTAPRIUS
PRIUS IS CLEANING UP AGAIN
by Rob Auchterlonie
Motoring writer
There’s clean and then there’s clean. Our house is clean, because my wife wears out Dysons with monotonous regularity keeping it that way.
She is to the adult world what the Toyota Prius is to the automotive environment. One of the world’s cleanest people has been re-acquainted with one of the world’s cleanest family cars. Aninauspiciousoccasion,I admit, becausetheformerwas totally unaware of the latter’s credentials until I pointed them out. Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive gives the electric motor more of a role to play than some other hybrids which rely on the petrol engine to produce peak performance, with the electric unit of secondary importance. First launched back in 1997, it offered motorists nearly 66mpg on the combinedcycle, sowhiletheinitial
✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
purchase price was on the high side you didn’t have to payfor its environmental consciousness at the pumps. Fast forward 19 years to the latest version to carry the badge and you’ll be interested to note that the combined figure now sits just above 94mpg – quite a step forward. The high voltage hybrid battery used here is now more compact and has better durability and charging performance. The price here is £26,490 for the Business Edition Plus model sampled. Starting up the Prius is a bit like waiting for the penny to drop with a dumb chum. Long pause, no sound. You press the power button and the digital display tells you the car is ready for action. But it’ssoquietyoucouldhearthat penny drop. Off with the parking brake and all is still quiet. Only ticking I can hear is my brain. And then, as you glide forward, there’s a sudden subdued revving from beneath the bonnet as the clever bits
decide electric power isn’t enough to get you moving at any real pace and the 1.8-litre engine joins in. Interestingly the electric motor is more powerful than a fair few internal combustion engines, and, with 120lb/ ft of torque available instantly from zero mph, the Pruis has impetus aplenty. How wingers won the steve.bailey@jpress.co.uk Twitter: @SteveBailey67
Glenn Murray says the quality of Brighton’s wingers was a key factor in him returning to the club this summer. The 32-year-old scored 56 goals in 136 appearances in his first spell with the club, including 22 goals when the Seagulls won the League One title in the 2010-11 season. After spells with Crystal Palace, Reading on loan and Bournemouth, Murray rejoined Brighton on a seasonlong loan from the Cherries last month. He admitted watching a number of Albion games on television last season and believes Brighton’s wide men will aid his game with quality crosses into the penalty area. He said: “It was definitely an easy decision to come back. From the outside, I looked at the wingers and the way they attack. The move here was very much based on that. We’re blessed with wingers, Anthony Knockaert, Kazenga LuaLua, Jamie Murphy, Jiri Skalak and Solly March coming back. They’re all great wingers and will deliver good quality into the box. “We play with wingers on the opposite sides so they
always come in and cross, which is a little bit different but I’m learning all the time and enjoying it.” After just missing out on promotion last season, Murray hopes Albion can go one better this campaign and said: “As professionals, we all want to get to the Premier League and it would be a fantastic achievement. “The squad is very motivated. Missing out the way they did last year means they want to put the wrongs right and hopefully we’ll do that this year. “A club of this size and infrastructure should be challenging at the top of the Championship and that’s exactly what we aim to do.” Brighton began last season with a 22-game unbeaten run and although Murray says it is important to get off to a good start, the same recordbreaking run is not a target: “I don’t think we’re striving to meet that or anything. We just need to collect points as often as possible and as
many as possible. If that is four wins and a loss, then we’ll take that. “Last year it was a special year for the club but the unbeaten run hasn’t been mentioned. This is a new challenge and we won’t be aiming to beat that.”
Glenn Murray.
With speculation linking the likes of Knockaert, Dale Stephens and Lewis Dunk with moves away from the Amex, Murray feels it is vitally important to keep the bulk of the squad together. He said: “It’s extremely important and if you want to challenge at the top of the Championship, you need to keep those better players. “You look at the Premier League teams that have come down and they’ve done well with keeping their better players and it’s extremely important that we do that.” Albion begin the new Championship season away to Nigel Pearson’s Derby County tomorrow and Murray said: “It will be a very tough ask. “They’ve got a new manager and they’ll all be out to impress in a home game to start with. “It doesn’t get any tougher so bring it on, because that’s what we have got to deal with every week in the Championship.”
‘Forget about last season’s woe: The promotion push starts here’ Liam Rosenior says it’s important to move on from the disappointment of last season and prepare for another push for promotion. The 31-year-old utility player admitted missing out on promotion – on goal difference – was the hardest thing he has had to deal with in his career and there were numerous ‘what if’ thoughts which went through his head over the summer. However, he says Albion have to use last season’s disappointment as their motivation for the upcoming campaign and said: “For sure, I thought about what ifs over the summer, it’s human nature. “When you come so close to doing something so big, not just big for the club but for the whole area, you do think if there had been two
goals here, if we’d just scored a goal here or if we’d not conceded there but it’s gone now. “We’ve got to move on and this is a true test of how we are as people. Do we go one way and say it’s not going to be our year or do we say all right, we’ll go one better and show the resilience that’s within the group and the club. “You’ve got to use that disappointment as an extra motivation and the one thing since I’ve been here is the motivation of everybody. It’s a real team effort from the groundsman, the tea lady, the chairman, the staff, everyone at the club is pulling in the same direction.” Rosenior knows the Championship will be competitive again and said: “I say it all the time that it’s
the hardest league in the world. I’ve played half of my career in the Championship and half in the Premier League and playing in the Championship is so hard. “Every game is so intense and physical. You’ve got 46 games and the standard is getting better and better.” On whether there will be more pressure on the team this season after an impressive campaign last time out, Rosenior said: “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to achieve. We have our own targets that we want to adhere to and get to and that was to get promotion last season, so we put enough pressure on ourselves but, in saying that, I think teams’ perception of us will be different this year. “I think we’ll be more of a scalp for teams and I think

teams will have more respect for us, especially when we’re at home. I think they will come and sit back a little bit more and let us try to break them down. “But I wouldn’t say there’s pressure, there’s more expectation. I think, rightly so, the fans will be more expectant for us to be successful and that comes with the territory of having a successful season last year.” Rosenior feels a trip to Derby County tomorrow is a good way to start the new season and said: “It’s a really good start for us because they’re one of the teams that I think will be fighting for promotion as well. “It gets us into that mindset from the first game of having to go and be at our best and we’ll see what happens.”

goals for Brighton ‘Being fancied will add extra pressure’ Bruno feels Albion will have to deal with the extra pressure of being one of the favourites for promotion this summer. The 35-year-old Spaniard was named club captain this summer, taking over from Gordon Greer who was released at the end of the season, and is expecting the Championship to be even harder to get out of this season. He said: “We need to realise that it’s going to be even harder this season because for all the other teams, we are one of the favourites to be up there and that’s going to be more pressure for us but we need to deal with that. “The most important thing is to be humble. Of course we had a great season last year but that doesn’t mean what we did before is going to help now. We need to keep approaching games with the same intensity, the same mentality and we know if do the same things, we are going to be there.”
Bruno says the team will be spurred on by the disappointment of missing out on promotion last season and said: “It was really hard for us but now it’s just a motivation. We know that is football, every year there are a few examples and we need to learn from that and I think the team is ready to start the season.” With Newcastle, Aston Villa and Norwich coming down from the Premier League, it will be another tough campaignforanyteamtogetto the top flight and Bruno said: “Always the Championship is competitive. A few teams like Newcastle, Aston Villa, Norwich, we expect they are going to be up there but last season there were a few teams as well and we were fighting with them, like Hull, Burnley, Middlesbrough and they were spending a lot of money as well. “Every season is so hard in the Championship and especially it’s about

the mentality.” Bruno admits a strong start is important but says it is key not to get too down with any defeats. Albion began last season with a 22-game unbeaten league run and Bruno said: “To start that well last season makes you believe but we cannot just try to get that run. “The most important thing is to think about this season and not see what we did last season because if you lose one game, we cannot get really disappointed. We’ve just got to keep going, we know that’s football. “If we lose the first game, away, it doesn’t mean anything. For example last season we got a lot of draws as well. Why not get more wins this season?”

Club captain Bruno.
Seagulls boss Chris Hughton admits expectations will have been raised by his side’s performances last season but has urged a sense of realism heading into the upcoming campaign. Albion finished third last season, behind Middlesbrough only on goal difference, having ended the previous Championship campaign in 20th. Hughton feels the division will be as tough, if not tougher this season, and said: “In some ways, I think there will be more expectation because of last season but people also realise how tough this division is. “They also see the three that have come down are very strong and Sheffield Wednesday are wanting to go again, Derby have just missed out in probably the last three seasons after they recruited very big last summer and that’s also apart from other teams that were very close last season. “Our supporters know how tough this division is, so there’s expectations because of last season but there’s also a little bit of realism because they know it will be equally as tough, if not tougher.” The Seagulls returned to pre-season training at the end of June and if he had to lift his players after last season’s heartbreak of missing out on promotion, Hughton said: “Each player’s feelings would have been different, some would have found it tougher than others and some will have been more emotional than others and that’s normal. “But six weeks later we were in pre-season training and the emphasis is very much on the future as opposed to the past.”

Albion boss Chris Hughton says season-openers do not come any tougher than tomorrow’s trip to Derby. The Rams are expected to be challenging at the top of the Championship again this season, after losing in the semi-finals of the play-offs – like the Seagulls – last season. New Derby manager Nigel Pearson takes charge of his first competitive game and Hughton said: “They don’t come any tougher. We all accept there are a group of teams that you think are going to be right up there come the end of the season and Derby are one of them for lots of reasons. “It’s where they’ve been for the last three or four seasons and they have a new manager, so I very much expect them to be at the top end of the table “It’s a very difficult one to start with.” Hughtonhasbeendelighted with his summer business so far, bringing in Steve Sidwell,
Oliver Norwood signed for Albion from Championship rivals Reading on Wednesday evening
Glenn Murray and this week midfielder Oliver Norwood from Reading. On his latest addition, Hughton said: “Oliver is a player we know very well and he’ll give us real good competition in central midfield. Hopefully, before the window closes, we can bring in a couple more too.” One player not joining
Albion is attacking midfielder Alex Pritchard, who yesterday joined Norwich. Hughton said: “We worked very well with Tottenham Hotspur and they were excellent. We had an agreement with the representatives and the player but Norwich then came in very late and the player decided to go there.
All-rounder Wiese back at Sussex for rest of the season Cricket
South African all-rounder David Wiese is back with Sussex for the remainder of the season. The 31-year-old played four games in the NatWest T20 Blast and one in the Royal London Cup in a short stint as an overseas player earlier in the year. He returns to Hove after playing in the Caribbean Premier League for Barbados Tridents and is available for Sussex’s remaining matches. Wiese is currently playing in Sussex’s County Championship Division 2
David Wiese has returned to Sussex for the rest of the season
match at Essex, which began yesterday. He replaces New Zealander Ross Taylor, who played his final game for the county against Kent before
heading to Zimbabwe to play in New Zealand’s latest Test Series. Jofra Archer, who signed a new contract this week, is making his County Championship debut at Essex. after impressing in a number of one-day matches of late. Sussex finished their Royal London One-Day Cup bottom of the South Group after defeats to Somerset and Kent. They lost by ten runs at Somerset on Saturday and then went down by seven wickets at home to Kent three days later.
“It was very disappointing but we have to move on, make the most of the players that we already have here and look at other options.” Connor Goldson will miss Saturday’s opener but Steve Sidwell and Kazenga LuaLua are in contention, while Solly March and Uwe Hunemeier have returned to training.
Asensio going in search of National South glory PICTURE BY DAVID HUNT
Football
Pablo Asensio believes his Whitehawk Football Club side have what it takes to soar to the National League South title this season. Hawks’ previous two campaigns have ended with play-off heartache but their Argentine boss feels things could be different this time around. Having added several additions from the continent over the summer ahead of his first full season in firstteam management, Asensio is confident his side can achieve something special. He said: “The number one target for me and my team is winning the title this season. “I’m sure a number of teams have that ambition as well but for me it is what I want to achieve. “This is my first full season in charge of any team after 14 years in coaching and I want to succeed. “I’ve been really happy with how my side has shaped up over pre-season and everyone is ready to go now.” Whitehawk kick things off with a trip to Weston-SuperMare tomorrow and Asensio knows what a tough test that will be. He added: “Weston is a real family club and it’s a nice
Pablo Asensio
place to go. I set out the same way in each game last season and that was to win. “I’m going to stick with that philosophy again this year whether we are home or away.” A congested opening month of the season sees Hawks play seven times in 24 days. Asensio admits it will be tough but every other team in the division faces a similar dilemma. He said: “It’s not ideal but every other team in the league will have to play the same number of matches as well. “We’ve worked hard over pre-season to make sure the players are ready and I’m sure they will be when the season gets under way. “We just want to get started now.” LEWIS MASON
Albion and Rams looking to resume promotion ambitions Brighton & Hove Albion
With pre-season now done and dusted, the football season gets in full swing once again as Brighton begin this year’s Championship campaign with a trip to fellow promotion hopefuls Derby County tomorrow. Both sides finished in the top six of the division last year and came up short in their respective play-off semi-finals. The Seagulls lost out to Sheffield Wednesday and Derby were beaten by Hull, who then won the final. The Rams and Albion will have their eyes firmly set on
going one step further in a league that looks to have only got stronger, with the likes of Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa to contend with this season. While Albion have made a number of additions to their squad over the summer, including the return of Glenn Murray, Derby – who spent over £20m on transfers last summer – have surprisingly yet to bring any new players in. With an established squad that looked set for automatic promotion having fallen off the pace before the sacking of Paul Clement in February,
the Rams board will be looking to new boss Nigel Pearson to get the most out of his players and take them that one step further, as he did with Leicester in the 2013/2014 season. Albion fans will head to Pride Park anticipating that Rams striker Chris Martin is likely to cause trouble for their defence. The Scottish international has been a thorn in Brighton’s side for a number of years, scoring seven goals against the Seagulls in the past three seasons. BRADLEY STRATTON @BradStrat

How will Albion go this season? Here are five predictions...
Johnny Cantor BBC Sussex commentator Where will Albion finish? It’s so difficult to predict the table when the transfer window is open for another four weeks but there are a few pointers already. If the Seagulls are able to keep the squad together and add maybe a striker, midfielder and central defender they can finish top six. There is no doubt about the qualities of both the players and the manager but the recruitment will have to be spot on again, as it was last year. The automatic places may be beyond them again due to the strength of those coming down and their spending power but I’ll plump for the Seagulls to finish fourth. Which three teams will go up? There’s no doubt that Newcastle are on a mission. There is of course no guarantee that the money spent will secure promotion but, with an experienced manager, albeit not in the Championship, I think they will make it back up. Matt Ritchie is an excellent signing and I see them as top two. Last year I thought it would be Albion’s year but this campaign I think Derby have a quality squad and with the new manager, Nigel Pearson, they will be a force to be reckoned with. Pearson isn’t a dream to deal with when it comes to the media but there can be little doubt about his abilities to achieve success. As for the third, well, I will have to say Albion via the play-offs. Fast starters last season, hopefully they can peak at the right time and celebrate success at Wembley in May. Who will go down? It may be somewhat predictable but I think some of the teams coming up may struggle. I do like Burton as a club but feel they may have it all to do. Barnsley never have a big budget so across the piece they may not have enough. This year Rotherham may also face a dog-fight as they have flirted with relegation before. Wigan
have built momentum and look solid so I think they will be safe. The race for promotion will be as keen as ever but the bid to avoid the drop may involve a fair few sides in the final weeks of the season. Albion’s key player? For me, it’s Lewis Dunk. We know he’s got talent but last season he showed a consistency that hasn’t always been there. A good season from him could be the foundation for success. If he adds more leadership and organisation to his individual skills he will be hugely influential. He appears happy now on the south coast, so let’s hope he has another good year. Of course, the team needs to score more goals and another striker may provide the headlines but Chris Hughton’s sides are always based on solid defence and Dunk is at the heart of things for the Seagulls. His goals are also always useful. Which one Championship player would you sign for Brighton? Well, there is certainly talent in several Championship squads but one player I have always admired is central midfielder George Thorne at Derby County. He was probably the most influential player in the division when he suffered a bad knee injury. He could be the key to promotion for the Rams this year. I also love the creativity of Wes Hoolahan at Norwich and feel there aren’t many players like him in the Championship, while Ross McCormack would also benefit any team, no matter which system they play, but I’ll go for Thorne.
Bradley Stratton Juice FM; Brighton & Hove Independent columnist Where will Albion finish? Having kept most of the squad together from last season at
this stage, you would hope that Albion will be challenging for promotion to the Premier League once more. I think they will finish fourth. Which three teams will go up? With the money at their disposal, Newcastle are my favourites to go straight back up to the Premier League. Norwich are one of those sides that will bounce between the top two flights, and I think they have enough
Anthony Knockaert
in them to do that once more. My head says Albion will come up short again, but I’m going to be optimistic, go with my heart and say they’ll make it to Wembley and gain promotion in the play-off final! Who will go down? Of the sides that have come up from League One, I think Burton and Barnsley could find themselves heading straight back down along with Rotherham, who may struggle without Neil Warnock in charge. Albion’s key player? My first choice would be Anthony Knockaert, but with the winger’s future at the club up in the air at the time of writing, I’m going with Beram Kayal. The Israeli has rarely put a foot wrong in his 18 months at the Amex and if his partnership with Dale Stephens can produce the same level of success as it did in the previous campaign then Albion already have the spine of the team that did so well last season. Which one Championship player would you sign for Brighton? Chris Hughton is still in the market for another striker, and if there’s one guy I would want him to bring in from another Championship side, it’s Ross McCormack. Scoring over 20 goals for a Fulham side that finished fifth from bottom in the league last season was no mean feat. The 29-year old would thrive off the creativity of the Albion midfield and would be a leader in a dressing room that has lost the influence and experience of Gordon Greer and Bobby Zamora.
Steve Bailey Brighton & Hove Independent sports editor Where will Albion finish? Second. With the addition of
Glenn Murray, the Seagulls squad is stronger than last season, so hopefully it won’t be the case that last year was the club’s chance to reach the Premier League. Who will go up? Newcastle will win the league, Brighton will pip a tight battle for second place and I expect a strong season for Sheffield Wednesday, who will go up through the play-offs. Who will go down? Burton and Barnsley will struggle after promotion last season and Rotherham as well. Albion’s key player? Anthony Knockaert. When he’s on form, there’s not a better player in the division and the Seagulls will be desperate to keep hold of him. However, it’s worth remembering there’s a lot of wing options if he does go – and Brighton went 22 games unbeaten before he signed last season. Which one Championship player would you sign for Brighton? Fernando Forestieri from Sheffield Wednesday – a real livewire and the type of player who could link up superbly with the club’s strikers.
Craig Peters Seagulls supporter Where will Albion finish? Top. And that’s not my blue and white tinted glasses making that decision. I genuinely believe there’s a unique spirit in this squad that’s been lacking for many years. The players will be fired up to lay to rest the ghost of last season’s disappointment. Which three teams will go up? Brighton will just pip Newcastle. Derby will win the play-offs. Whowillgodown? Burton, Preston and I think Brentford might struggle this season. Albion’s key player? Beram Kayal – without a doubt. I can’t seem to recall him having an off day last season. Just watch him off the ball as well. He is the general of the side, plus I think he is just as important off the pitch as he is
on it. Which one Championship player would you sign for Brighton? I’d like someone in the division to give Adam Armstrong from Newcastle a go. Only 19, he scored 20 goals on loan at Coventry last season and his game time will be limited again. However, he’ll probably end up on loan at another Championship club of the Bristol City or Preston ilk. We are quite light at the back with Gordon Greer gone, so perhaps, as previously reported in the media and assuming he’s available, Russell Martin may make for a shrewd signing to the squad.
Gary Elphick Former Albion professional; current Worthing joint manager Where will Albion finish? Sixth. It’s a slightly more competitive league this year but Chris Hughton is a top manager and will get them in the play-offs again. Which three teams will go up? Aston Villa, Newcastle andDerby.Villawillgetthings right this season, Newcastle have been spending fortunes and are looking strong and I fancy Derby too, under Nigel Pearson. They’ve gone under the radar a bit this summer but they’ll be right up there. Who will go down? Barnsley, Rotherham and Burton. I just think they’ll all struggle against the bigger teams. Albion’s key player? Anthony Knockaert. I was impressed every time I saw him last season. He’s an exciting player, gives Brighton a different impetus and gets you on the edge of your seat. WhichoneChampionship player would you sign for Brighton? Jonathan Kodjia, from Bristol City. He’s the type of player the club need, he’s six foot, mobile, scores goals and is a real linchpin of an attack.
