BRIGHTON AND HOVE INDEPENDENT SPECIAL
wELCOME TO BRIGHTON FRINGE 2016 It’s a record-breaking year for Brighton Fringe, with more than 900 events lined up at 165 venues across the city, making it the biggest and best arts festival in the country. From comedy, theatre, dance and visual art, to family-friendly and educational events, there really is something for everyone. And hundreds of the events are free. Kicking off with a fireworks display for the first time (see page 12), the Fringe will showcase a diverse range of artists, from well-established performers, to those who are learning their craft. It is an opportunity for would-be stars to display their talents, and this year’s Window programme showcases the very best newcomers. Fringe City is back, and it will see the North Laine come alive at the weekends, with performances, installations, sideshows, dance-offs, choirs, cabaret, puppetry, children's workshops, acrobatics and surreal walkabout performers (see page 12).
The Fringe also brings back the city’s famous ‘White Night’, under the new name of ‘The Fringe AllNighter’. It will see a late night Fringe City bring live cabaret, circus, music and performances to the streets of Brighton and evening art installations, exhibitions, theatre, cabaret, music and club nights run across Fringe venues until 8.30am (see page 12). With so many events on offer, it’s (sadly) impossible to see them all, but with the free Fringe app (see page 11), you can create your own schedule for the month-long Fringe celebrations. Part of the fun of Fringe is thumbing through the guide to to discover the hidden gems, and stumbling across an event you may never have thought to see, but we’ve given you a good start with our must-see events (page 4 and 5). This year’s month-long Fringe is set to be as eclectic and diverse as ever. It is part of the life of the city, and its
impact in Brighton and Hove - and beyond - grows each year. Julian Caddy, managing director of Brighton Fringe, said: “All over the world, Fringe festivals have become a fundamental part of the arts ecosystem and the continued extraordinary growth of Brighton Fringe is testament to this. We are taking people away from digital screens and opening up live performance to a wider audience than ever before, with an unprecedented range and affordability that is truly a breath of fresh air. Brighton Fringe is now a definitive landmark event that the whole country can be proud of.” He’s right. And we’re lucky enough to have this landmark event right on our doorstep. Let’s make the most of it. Bex Bastable Content editor Brighton & Hove Independent

HOT TIPS HIP Part-archive, part-personal odyssey, Jolie Booth's first one-woman show traces the true story and origin of a long-forgotten box of possessions found in a Brighton squat. Upon discovering a long-forgotten flat above the shops of Brighton clock tower, a bunch of semi-hip young squatters find a once hip woman’s long-forgotten possessions – including a box of diaries and letters addressed to various Brighton locations, and...a hip bone. A true story of the beginnings of Infinity Foods, counterculture, LSD, mortality, choices and enlightenment. May 9-11, 7.30pm, £8 - £10 Venue: Marlborough Theatre, 4 Prince's Street, Brighton, BN2 1RD

With more than 900 events at 150 venues, we are spoiled for choice throughout the whole of Brighton Fringe. To help you decide, here are some highlights and a selection of the many "must-see" performances and events. Obviously, this list of hot tips is neither exhaustive, nor definitive!
The Girl From Mars Getting ahead of the wave of interest in 90s nostalgia, a new jukebox musical with an anthemic Britpop soundtrack is premiering at Brighton Fringe Festival. Written, produced and directed by Julia Collar, the show explores her experiences of growing up gay in a rural community through a fantasy sci-fi plot inspired by the 1954 B-Movie. June 3 - 4, 9.30pm, £11 (£9.50) Venue: The Warren Main Space, St Peters Church North, York Place, BN1 4GU
Cassetteboy vs DJ Rubbish h YouTube sensations Cassetteboy team up with hilarious rapper DJ Rubbish to crash open the season with a comedy show in a nightclub, as they dance on the wreckage. With 20 million hits - and back by public demand - they've mashed-up everyone from David Cameron to Harry Potter! Afterclub 'til 2am. May 6, 10.30pm, £10. Venue: Brighton Spiegeltent, Old Steine Pleasure Gardens, BN1 1GY
The Thermos Museum Fresh from last year’s Edinburgh Fringe appearance, Neil Davidson’s mysterious and hilarious Thermos Museum touches down in Brighton. Part-history, part-comical guided tour, visitors to the Thermos Museum aren’t allowed to freely browse the amazing memorabilia, instead they’re carefully led through a veritable feast of flaskery by a humorously disenchanted curator. Expect a mixture of eccentric but intricate displays, astonishing (and sometimes true) facts, and a deadpan – but darkly funny – narrative that tells you everything you need to know about flasks and their role in history. May 6-8, 11-15, 18, 22, 25-30, June 1-5, 2pm and 3pm, £5 (£3), Venue: Number 106, Komedia Laundry Room, 44 – 47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN
Project: Oggbots An intergalactic treasure hunt designed to inspire the next generation of electronic inventors, is coming to Brighton Fringe as part of a Sussex-wide tour this May half term. This piece of gaming theatre invites seven to 11-year-olds to assemble at the Jubilee Library then journey through the streets solving clues, meeting mysterious characters and dodging secret agents in order to collect pieces of alien robots, crash-landed from space. Along the way children will learn the basics of electronic engineering in order to rebuild their very own Oggbot. May 29, June 4-5, £8 - £9.50 Venue: Jubilee Library, Jubilee Street, BN1 1GE
Some Like It Thea-Skot After a sell-out, five-star run at The Edinburgh Fringe & Soho Theatre, Alison Thea-Skot brings her surreal, joyous and unhinged character comedy show to Brighton. Hang out with Celine Dion, join the Heartbreak Club and end on a finale from 'The Woman with Feet for Hands’. Let Thea-Skot coax you into her world, where ultimately you become the hero. June 4, 8.15pm, £8 Venue: Marlborough Theatre, 4 Prince's Street, Brighton, BN2 1RD

A Walk Through Homelessness in Brighton & Hove @ Brighton Town Hall Brighton & Hove is a city of contrasts. Join the heritage trail through the streets of Brighton, exploring the first vagrancy statutes of the fourteenth century, the creation of the workhouse, the slum clearance programme, the squatters' movement and the emergence of charities across the city. Trail concludes with a visit to First Base Day Centre to learn about homelessness today.
Fringe Fireworks Party @ The Warren To celebrate the opening of its biggest ever festival, Brighton Fringe has joined forces with The Warren to kick things off with a bang by laying on its first ever fireworks display. Fireworks will be launched from the top of St Peter’s Church to mark the opening of England’s largest arts festival. May 6, 9pm

There are many reasons why people choose to release equity from their home. Learn more about equity release with multi-award-winning equity release advisors Age Partnership. They will let you know if it’s right for you and what impact it could have on the size of your estate or your entitlement to means-tested benefits, either now or in the future. Equity release may involve a lifetime mortgage or a home reversion plan. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration.

Brighton Fringe announces First ever opening night FIreworks
To celebrate the opening of its biggest ever festival, Brighton Fringe has joined forces with The Warren to kick things off with a bang by laying on its first ever fireworks display. This free special event on Friday 6th May will see fireworks launched from the top of St Peter’s Church to mark the opening of England’s largest arts festival. This year’s Brighton Fringe features a record-breaking 900 different events including smash hit family shows, international cabaret, spoken work, live music, visual art, world class theatre and comedy. Julian Caddy, Brighton Fringe’s Managing Director, said: “As England’s largest arts festival it feels only right to start with something massive and spectacular from the top of one of Brighton’s most iconic buildings in the centre of town. “I’m really pleased to be working with the lovely people at The Warren who are helping make the start of this year’s Brighton Fringe an amazing one.” Brighton Fringe’s opening night fireworks party will start at 9pm on Friday, 6th May at The Warren. This event is free but space in Brighton Fringe’s viewing area is limited, so advance booking is essential. Tickets are available from the Brighton Fringe website brightonfringe.org, by calling 01273 917272 or by visiting the Brighton Fringe Box Office at One Stop Travel on Western Road.
Go all night with Brighton Fringe
From theatre at 2am to a steamy 12-hour charades marathon, Brighton Fringe’s first ever All-Nighter promises to bring arty happenings to every pocket of the city from dusk to dawn. The Brighton Fringe All-Nighter kicks off on Friday 27 May with a late night Fringe City that will see live cabaret, circus, music, performances and art installations on New Road from early eve until 10.30pm. The Fringe is also teaming up with venues, clubs, museums, cafes, bars, galleries and shops for special late night events, pop up performances, and art fuelled breakfasts. For the daring, the Imaginary Porno Charades at Sweet Dukebox on Waterloo Street from 10.30pm until 10.30am, promises porno puns, sexy signals, and outrageous observations to keep you up all night. Boogaloo Stu will be taking audiences back to the 1970s with his TV pilot game show Crimplene Millionaire at the Spiegeltent from 9.30pm, or for the higher brow check out No More Miss America!, based on the New York Radical Women collective’s battle against the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City in 1968, from 2am at Sweet St Andrews. At Komedia, cult cabaret artists the Lip Sinkers will be hosting their very own afterparty until 3am and The Warren will be showing short films from the Iris Film Festival based on the slogan Watch Films, Party Nightly, Repeat. What’s not to love? The full Fringe All-Nighter programme will be announced at the beginning of May and an All-Nighter map and trail will be available across the city and online.
