Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Aaron Smith feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just
about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Brighton, Hove & the surrounding areas
and Aaron is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and
family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

the next generation Curiosity Hub
Jacqueline Currie www.thecuriosityhub.com Our mission is to bring an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) education via workshops and outreach events for all ages. Our hands-on workshops include Lego robotics, stop-motion animation, Minecraft, creating websites, apps, computer games, digital music, and electronic art. The maker movement has been growing steadily over the past few years, and as computers and robotics kits have become more accessible, we’re seeing people using these technologies in new and creative ways. Parents want to encourage their children’s creative
pursuits. Digital education is an important aspect of this, as children become enthusiastic creators, rather than just passive consumers of technology. They get to have positive, creative experiences with technology, see how STEAM skills are relevant to their everyday lives, and gain skills and confidence. I’ve had parents tell me their daughter loved creating computer games so much that she continued at home, or they couldn’t believe their son stood up to give a presentation about his animation at the end of one of our sessions. Kids themselves have told me they want to be digital musicians, robotics engineers, and website developers when they’re older they now see it as a real possibility.
He very much enjoys technology because it’s really creative, and he says it can change the world in loads of different ways... and also it’s brilliant fun! He particularly likes robotics, coding and video games. Yes, I do think digital skills are very important for Jake, as at the moment he aspires to be a video game or tech designer.

Director of Brighton Mini Maker Faire www.makerfairebrighton.com Brighton Mini Maker Faire runs a festival of DIY craft and technology every September as part of Brighton Digital Festival. This year’s event is on September 5 at the Corn Exchange. We’re in the middle of an exciting shift in the way we learn about, use and play with technology. There are new affordable tools, and information freely shared online, which help people get started tinkering with tech, and at the same time, a feeling that we should be more in control of the
Exploring Senses David Alliston
www.exploringsenses.co.uk We run weekly Young Inventors Centre digital maker space sessions for children and young people at Brighton Youth Centre. world we build around us. People want to understand it better, and ensure that we make the technology that we actually need. Young people build this tech literacy by tinkering with technology, computers, design and craft directly. By taking it apart and building it themselves. Parents love it because their kids are engaged, and enjoying learning, and it leaves them in a good place to take on careers that will enable them to build the future world we’ll all be living in.

games), and People Place Digital Mutations (a mixture of cardboard crafting, 3D scanning, 3D printing, 3D modeling, Minecraft, and Oculus Rift virtual reality). There are several reasons why Brighton is leading the way in young people’s digital education. Brighton is a very progressive city with digital businesses booming, as highlighted in the recent Brighton Fuse report. Parents in Brighton are generally forward thinking, seeking new ways to exist,
creating, developing, and sharing ideas. This is why we want our kids to study digital technology, but at the same time let’s not forget the real world, which is why Exploring Senses artists choose to mix up digital with analogue real world processes to even things out.

Elm warning
Rail refunds

The city council’s arboriculture team has warned residents to be vigilant when buying logs for burning as it continues its fight against Elm Disease. Brighton and Hove is home to the National Elm collection which is under constant threat from the disease spread by the Elm Bark Beetle, which lays its eggs beneath the bark of unhealthy trees. Ian Brewster, arboricultural manager, said residents must take responsibility when purchasing logs. He said: “If in doubt, always ask the log merchant beforehand what species of wood they sell. If Elm is mentioned then don’t take them.”
Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown, has welcomed the rail minister’s announcement that train passengers will receive automatic compensation for delays. Claire Perry announced that refunds will be paid electronically when services are delayed or cancelled. Currently, passengers must fill in a form, with refunds taking weeks to arrive. Mr Kirby said: “While passengers have technically been entitled to refunds for years, the process of applying for one is so convoluted it understandably puts most people off bothering. I have been pressing for a long time for rail service improvements.’’
Floods caused Komedia to close last Thursday, after thunderstorms hit the city. Floodwater entered the venue’s offices, studio and kitchen area, but damage to the electrical system forced management to shut, with the cancellation of four shows, and the relocation of another to The Old Market. Krater Comedy Club was cancelled, but the club’s MC Stephen Grant decided to find an imaginative alternative to cater for those needing their comedy fix on a Sunday night-rounding up comedians on Twitter. Komedia has announced it will open for business again today (Friday).

Beach hut
Teatime takeover
After a nationwide search to find Britain’s best beach hut, the “Little Beach Hut of Dreams” in Hove has been voted the nation’s third favourite beach hut. Little Beach Hut of Dreams, at Kings Esplanade and owned by Beth Kempton, was one of two beach huts to be awarded runner up by a panel of judges, and by the votes of the British public. Ms Kempton runs a programme called Dreamers-in-Residence where people from the local community can apply to use the hut for the day. They have to explain what they want to use it for, and afterwards provide the owner with a few words about their experience. The programme is free of charge, and when people visit they receive a small gift to inspire them to make the most of their day.
An unsuspecting Brighton family arrived home from the school run, to find a giant beanstalk, moving broomsticks, a giant bunny rabbit, and an enormous red toadstool in their kitchen. The Duttons had won a Teatime Takeover competition by McCain, and sat down for tea, while a wizard and his trusted fairy regaled the family with magical stories. Jasmin, five, and James, seven, could not believe their eyes as bunnies hopped out of cupboards and cauldrons smoldered on their oven hob. Watch the video at: brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk

Motors First Drive: Mercedes-AMG
GLE 63 S Coupé
What’s new? When it comes to big bruisers, they don’t come much bigger or more bruising than the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé. It’s the flagship slashed-roof SUV from a brand well known for making a good off-roader or two, not to mention a few fast and fun road cars. This one is powered by the same 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 seen in the E-Class AMG, amongst others, but with tweaks to make it more immediately responsive in light of the car’s two-tonne-plus kerb weight.
Looks and image
You’ll either love it or loathe it, but we all said the same thing about the BMW X6, with which the GLE Coupé competes, and the Munich-based company can barely build X6s quickly enough. You’ll certainly be seen coming in the GLE 63 S, with its huge front end and gaping grille vents, and even more so you’ll be seen leaving thanks to the striking boot style and the fact that the four exhausts do tend to shout a bit. If you want an SUV with presence,
consider that box ticked. This version of the GLE Coupé is something of an expensive toy. It can carry a family of up to five with plenty of legroom but it’s really aimed at the driver; lifting them up and making them more visible. If you want to be seen (and/or heard) this isn’t a bad way to do it.
Behind the wheel
Four-wheel drive is standard and proves pretty essential for managing the AMG GLE Coupé’s weight. Tip it into a corner at speed on a neutral throttle and it doesn’t always co-operate, pushing the outside front wheel into understeer, but treat the accelerator with lead-footed contempt and it hooks up all four wheels and cannons itself around and out of the corner with a glorious bellow from the exhausts. The steering has a semblance of feel, too, which is a bonus unlooked-for.
Value for money
Take a deep breath and count to £96,000. That’s where the pinnacle AMG version starts, and that’s getting into Porsche 911 GT3 territory. Completely different cars, of course, and you’d be a bit strange to be considering both simultaneously, but for fast
car fans it puts the price into perspective. Image will be key to its value appeal. That and the bonkers engine.
Who would buy one?
The BMW X6 sells very well to sports people, especially footballers looking for style, presence and paparazzi-crushing potential. The AMG version of the GLE Coupé ticks all the right boxes and has novelty – and therefore scarcity – on its side. You can bet a few orders for X6s will be swapped over to Mercedes in the next couple of months. This car summed up in a single word: Monstrous If this car was an…: Avenger it would be the Hulk. Enough said.
