Did you know you live in a hard water area? Scott Jenkins explains help is at hand... Although most of us put up with hard water, many of us don’t realise that you CAN do something about it. Scott Jenkins of Scott Jenkins Water Softeners and Bathrooms has been a plumber in West Sussex for more than 15 years and has seen first hand the problems created by hard water. One of the biggest issues is Limescale deposits building up in heating systems causing damage, breakdowns and increased heating costs. The same applies to your household water system causing damage to your appliances. The constant cleaning of limescale from shower heads, shower screens and sinks is another problem experienced in hard water areas. Hard water can also aggravate skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
Hard Water Cylinder
Soft Water Cylinder
When a water softener is installed in your home, no limescale will form which means much less cleaning and no need to buy limescale removal products. Savings will also be made, for example, soft water requires less washing powder - by up to 75%, you also need less products for bathing and showering and you also have less chance of large bills for potential future problems with your heating system and appliance breakdowns. Another big advantage people with softeners remark on is the ‘luxury’ feel that bathing or showering in soft water gives.

The TwinTec S3 is different to other softeners. If you were to purchase an ordinary softener you would have quite a large machine, which requires you to carry a 25kg bag of salt. The TwinTec however is small and compact, requires no electricity and uses block salt – like two household bricks – instead of heavy bags. With Hard Water

Scott originally started by selling the ‘Harvey’ manufactured water softeners after being asked about water softeners by several clients that were having bathrooms fitted by his team. Scott, already having one in his own home and fully appreciating the benefits was able to offer advice about water softeners and installation. Harvey have manufactured softeners in the UK for more than 35 years and formerly traded under the

Brighton i360 soars to tallest structure in Sussex It’s official. At 6pm yesterday (Thursday), the Brighton i360 tower became the tallest building in Sussex - having reached a height of 120 metres. And there’s still about 50 metres to go. Eleanor Harris, the i360’s chief executive, said: “The i360 is now the tallest structure in Sussex - taller than Shoreham Power Station, which previously was the tallest structure, and Sussex Heights in Brighton and Hove, which was the tallest building, and other famous landmarks such as Chichester Cathedral and the Gatwick Air Traffic Control tower. Up close the tower is an incredibly elegant and beautiful piece of architecture, soaring up into the sky and it will be fantastic to see the tower revealed in all its glory when the square jacking tower, used to build the tower, is removed next month. I was fortunate to go up the jacking tower at the weekend with the construction engineers and already the view from 60 metres is stunning. I can’t wait to see the views from the i360 when it opens next summer and the pod will glide up to 138 metres - more than double the height of the jacking tower.”
City councillors register their interests >> Continued from page 1 two-page form, covering 10 simple questions.) From today, you can easily check for yourself. Previously, you would - like Brighton & Hove Independent journalists on Wednesday - have had to make an appointment to visit the council’s King’s House headquarters, where you would be guided through the corridors of bureaucracy to a room containing a lever-arch file, the contents of which you are, strangely, not allowed to photocopy. (The taking of notes is allowed.) And what would you have found? Nothing untoward, it seems. Not, at least, from a brief glimpse. Here are some bullet points: ■ Councillor Julie Cattell, the Labour chair of the council’s planning committee and a planner with East Sussex County Council, is the director and sole shareholder of CJ Planning Ltd, a planning agency, “which will be wound up in the next six months”. (A quick check with Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning register shows a total 272 records of applications involving CJ Planning.); ■ Councillor Jayne Bennett, a

Conservative councillor for Hove Park, appears to have the biggest property portfolio, listing six properties: 27 Hill Brow, Hove; 22 Eaton Court, Hove; 2A Bentham Road, Brighton; 7 Viaduct Road, Brighton; 166A Springfield Road, Brighton; and 74 Kemos Road, Portslade; ■ Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, leader of the Conservative Group, is not far behind. The “land and property” he has comprises: 44 Dyke Road, Brighton; 28, 29 Ship Street, Brighton; 146 Preston Drive, Brighton; and 26 Warren Road, Brighton. Three councillors - Councillor Robert Nemeth, a Conservative councillor who lists himself as owner of RS Nemeth Estates Ltd; Councillor Pete West, a Green councillor; and Councillor Phelim
Mac Cafferty, convenor of the Green Group - exercise their right under the 2011 Localism Act not to give an “address/description of land”. The records show: “The Member or co-opted Member has declared an interest in relation to this section, the details of which are withheld pursuant to Section 32 Localism Act 2011.” Basically, they apparently fear they might be subject to “violence or intimidation”. In case you have not read this particular piece of legislation recently, it states that details need not be disclosed if “the nature of the interest is such that the member or co-opted member, and the authority’s monitoring officer, consider that disclosure of the details of the interest could lead to the member or co-opted member, or a person connected with the member or co-opted member, being subject to violence or intimidation”. There’s much more. And, from today, you can test and trust to your own satisfaction.
steering the strategy of the festival and leading the consortium group. “I’m immensely pleased to join as chair at this exciting time in Brighton Digital Festival’s development,” he said. “The consortium model that steers the festival is unique in that it draws both digital industry and creative sector organisations together.’’ “This supports the festival in creating a socially centred approach to programming, that reflects the needs and wants of the region’s thriving digital and creative industries.”
Bex Bastable @BexBastable Mental health workers for Brighton and Hove City Council are set to strike, in a dispute over night-time rotas. UNISON said its 19 members in the mental health service were forced to work night shifts on a stand-by basis, even after working a day shift, with the threat of dismissal for non-compliance. These are the mental health workers who are called out to assess people in crisis - whether it is at a police station, at home, or on the street. Alex Knutsen, UNISON branch secretary, said: “A voluntary night rota had successfully been in place for years – it is only when senior managers decided it should be compulsory that problems arose. UNISON has put forward numerous alternatives to cover this essential service in a manner that does not place our dedicated members at risk, and more so, the people they assist. “The threats by the council to discipline and sack our members have been fundamentally damaging to generally reasonable industrial relations – they are vindictive, and amount to straight out bullying.”
He said he hoped the issue could be resolved - but the threat of dismissal must be withdrawn. Caroline Penn, lead member for mental health at the council, said: “They do a fantastic job and it is an absolutely vital service. I would be very concerned if it did come to strike action.” Denise D’Souza, executive director of adult services said: “We are looking forward to meeting UNISON early next week to hear their proposals to assist us in having a robust 24-hour approved mental health professional service across the city. We have a statutory duty to provide a responsive and sustainable service that ensures residents in need of an urgent assessment under the Mental Health Act receive one in a timely way throughout the day or night.’’ UNISON told the city council it would take night-time strike action from Friday, August 14, for six weeks, if the issue is not resolved. The dispute began in September 2014. Preparations have also begun for a ballot of UNISON’s entire council membership of 3,700 members. This would be the first all-out action taken by UNISON members in the city, over a local dispute, since the formation of the unitary authority in 1997.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Aaron Smith feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just
about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Brighton, Hove & the surrounding areas
and Aaron is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and
family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Give a dog a home ¨ campaign
@BrightonIndy
www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk
Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. This week we feature Bess, the Border Collie. www.dogstrust.org.uk
Factfile: “Bess is a seven-year-old black and white female Border Collie who originally came to us with six puppies in March 2013. She is such a sweet girl and a firm favourite with the staff here at Shoreham. “Bess was in a home for two years but became uncomfortable with the other dog, so sadly had to come back to the centre. “She is a very shy girl and takes a little while to get to know and trust new people. Once she’s had the time to become comfortable with you she is very cheeky and enjoys a fuss. “Bess loves treats and this is a great way to make friends with her. Being a typical Collie she is very bright and enjoys treat puzzle interactive games, and likes you to play too. She also really enjoys playing fetch with tennis balls and footballs. “Bess is looking for an adult-only home, where she can be the only dog. It’s important that she has her own garden as she can be worried by loud noises and isn’t comfortable around heavy traffic. She is learning to walk on very quiet roads, so a home where there’s quiet walking places nearby would be ideal. ‘‘One of Bess’s fears is car travel. She is having training at the moment to make her feel more comfortable around the car. This is something new owners will need to continue as it will take time for Bess to be happy to get into a car and travel.”

Savoy Kicks at the Bandstand
Pop-up dance areas will appear across the city, as part of a campaign to raise funds for a new performing arts hub in Brighton. South East Dance will place floor squares around Brighton, which will provide a space for local artists to perform. The public will also be encouraged to get involved and join the professional community dancers. Brighton’s very own Charleston group, Savoy Kicks has already lent its support to the campaign by dancing in a floor square on the city’s iconic Bandstand. The SPACE TO DANCE campaign aims to generate support for The Dance Space - a new home for dance in the heart of the Circus Street Market regeneration area. South East Dance has raised more than 80% of the funds it needs for The Dance Space but
still needs to raise £500,000 of its £3.78m target by November 2015. To raise the remaining amount the organisation is calling on local people and companies to back the campaign by making a donation based on whatever they can afford. Jamie Watton CEO/artistic director of South East Dance said: “We want to encourage dancing on the streets of Brighton and sharing the evidence on social media. This will help us raise awareness about The Dance Space and about the potential of dance to invigorate and potentially transform lives. “We still need to raise crucial funds to make The Dance Space happen and we can only do this with the support of local people and businesses in the area.” To find out more, visit: www.southeastdance.org.uk

The aura of Zamora Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion The re-signing of Bobby Zamora has created an audible buzz among the Albion faithful, the like of which hasn’t been heard since the inauguration of the Amex. The 34-year-old Londoner enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career on the south coast, illuminating the Theatre of Trees with goals that fired Albion to two successive championships. Needless to say, he is held in very high regard in these parts. Some people say you should never go back in football. Trying to re-live past glories doesn’t always bear fruit. Peter Ward, whose strikes propelled Albion to the top flight in the late 1970s, enjoyed a largely-disappointing homecoming a few years later. The sublime John Byrne, who formed such a devastating partnership with Mickey Small
– for just one season – was a shadow of his former self during his two additional periods at the Goldstone. Bobby is a markedly different player now to the one whose eye for goal earned a big-money switch to Spurs in 2003. Wearing the stripes, Zamora was a pacey forward, an unerring finisher, and was great in the air – aided and abetted by the left boot of Paul Watson. A more-than-useful goalscorer since, he hasn’t quite hit the back of the net as often. But he has played at a much higher level – consistently. Add lining up alongside – and against – proven internationals, representing his country twice, and featuring in a UEFA Cup final, and Bobby’s career can only be viewed as a success. His link-up play is exceptional and he will fill the void created by Glenn Murray’s premature departure in 2011. But, for all the skill and experience Bobby
brings to Albion’s much-improved forward line, his initial impact off the pitch could be priceless. Bobby finished the chances created by one of the all-time great Albion squads. A group of players whose dedication, drive, team spirit, and will to win beautifully exemplified the supporters’ seemingly never-ending fight to secure the holy grail of Falmer. The fans remember how good those times were and at its heart was Robert Lester Zamora. There is genuine excitement on the highways and byways of Sussex for a man who can be described only as a returning hero. Sometimes, the overall impact a player makes cannot be gauged in performances alone. When he trots on to the hallowed Amex turf for the first time, the roar will be spinetingling, emotion-charged, and crystallise exactly why we all love this wonderful game. Welcome home, Bobby.
