Average price of homes tops £300k Exclusive by Greg Hadfield The average cost of a home in our city exceeded £300,000, Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal today. An exclusive analysis of the latest Land Registry data has disclosed a total of 121 homes were sold in June - with a total value of £37,174,350. The most expensive property

was 1 Chesham Place in Kemptown (pictured), for £1,750,000 - making it the second-most-expensive property so far this year. Six other properties made it into the list of the top 20 most homes sold in the first six months of 2013 (see table). In June, the figures were: detached properties - 12 sold, with an average sale price of £406,833 ; semi-detached - 19 sold, average £427,918; terrace - 31 sold, average £383,154; and flats - 59 sold, average £208,205. The aggregate value of homes sold was £37 million.

Russian vodka protest at Pride PRIDE organisers are refusing to allow Russian vodka to be sold at this year's events. In response to recent draconian law changes affecting LGBT people in Russia, gay businesses have come together to organise a walking tableau as part of the community parade tomorrow (Saturday). The tableau features 100 posters declaring Brighton’s support of Russian LGBT people. The poster, the brainchild of Kate Wildblood and Karol Michalec, two graduates of the University of Brighton, has already been widely circulated on social media such as Facebook. A new Russian law imposes heavy fines for providing information about homosexuality to people under 18 Paul Kemp, director of Pride, said: “Although Pride is often perceived as just a party or celebration, I believe it should have a strong political core as well. “We love to party once a year, but it is the cause of equality and freedom that drives us to be as visible and proactive as possible. We would encourage everyone to show their solidarity for the Russian LGBT community." Peter Tatchell, the gay rights

campaigner, will be on the main stage at 5.20pm in Preston Park tomorrow. A Pride spokesperson said: "The equality and freedom message of Brighton Pride is clearer than ever this year as we march and celebrate in solidarity with the oppressed LGBT population of Russia. THE ARGUS, a Brighton-based newspaper, is quitting its city headquarters. A publication that once sold 100,000 copies a day - and which is now produced and printed in Southampton - is looking for smaller accommodation. Latest circulation figures for the struggling newspaper, which costs 85p on Saturdays, revealed a shocking 20% collapse in sales - the biggest fall

of any local daily newspaper in the country. Average daily sales were just 19,199 in July to December 2012. Now, "For Sale" boards have appeared outside its largely-empty offices, opposite Asda, on an industrial estate in Hollingbury. Newspaper bosses - believed to be looking at much smaller offices near Preston Park - had hoped to announce they had sold on the lease earlier this summer.

But the deal is understood to have fallen through. It is almost certain that any move has now been delayed until next year. Annual rent of the building 180,000 square feet on a 4.5-acre site - is put at nearly £45,000 a year; rates currently payable total more than £60,000. Flude, the commercial property agents, are advertising the complex as having potential for redevelopment.

Jason Kitcat The West Sussex village of Balcombe has made national news over recent weeks, as residents and campaigners have sought to prevent a major drilling project in the area. We should lend them our support, because - even though Balcombe is some 16 miles from Brighton and Hove - the impacts of the project are far-reaching. The American company Cuadrilla is due to begin drilling at a site outside the village in their search for oil and gas. If they are unable to extract it by conventional methods, they will resort to “fracking” - as they and others have done elsewhere. Fracking is an intensive and wasteful process, involving explosives and a high-pressure chemical cocktail used to blast cracks underground to release gas. But, where fracking has happened elsewhere, it’s been linked to air

pollution, contamination of local water supplies, and even earthquakes. For example, contamination meant that residents living near some fracking sites in the United States were able to set their tap water alight. And here in the United Kingdom, fracking triggered earthquakes near Blackpool. In recognition of these risks, many areas in Europe and across the world have already halted local fracking.

Aside from the wider environmental implications of investing in fossil fuels, there’s a more immediate risk that fracking at Balcombe could pollute our city’s water supply - all of which comes from the same essential underground aquifer - and that any subsequent earthquakes could damage our absolutely crucial London-to-Brighton railway line. The government, however,

continues to support fracking companies’ operations - even though nobody fully understands the significant impacts of fracking, or can control them either. For these reasons, we recently added our voices to the anti-fracking campaign by declaring Brighton and Hove a “no-fracking zone”, and we continue to lobby the government to reconsider their view on this risky practice.

Success looms for the Donuts phenomenon Tom Hasson

Every Tuesday night, as the last trains depart from Brighton station and the daily hub of activity closes its gates, one small part of the Victorian building continues to pulsate with life. Under the brick arches just off Trafalgar Street lies the Green Door Store, home to Donuts, the hip-hop and electronic beats club night. Each week, the Green Door Store hits capacity as Matt Tanner, aka Loom, plays his favourite music to a passionate crowd. “When I started Donuts, it was purely to DJ the music that I love,” says Tanner. “It was somewhere I could play what I wanted. As it grew and became more popular, it went from being somewhere to play music that I love on the side to being my proper job.” Starting life as a one-off club night that was so popular that it quickly became monthly and then weekly, the success of Donuts is still surprising to Tanner: “I had no idea it was going to be so busy. I was in shock. People were really getting interested. I think a lot of that is to do with the Green Door Store. “It’s got a great reputation, it’s cool, the staff are really nice and on top of that, entry to Donuts is free.” What’s not to like?

On any given Tuesday, Tanner and his rotation of resident DJs (Murder He Wrote, Ruff Snippets, and Tom Yum) play through five hours of funk, soul, hip-hop and electronic beats. But alongside the music, Donuts has grown to become Tanner’s extended family. “When I started Donuts, it was just me playing from 11pm till 4am,” he says. “Through Donuts, I’ve met endless amounts of really talented people, and they’re all from Brighton. Even those who aren’t actually from Brighton originally are representing Brighton in a strong way.” Having grown up in Brighton himself, Tanner believes it is important to “support the locals” and “support the scene”, as he wouldn’t be where he is today without the help of the Green Door Store (“especially the old manager, Ed Lilo”), his fellow DJs (“a massive part of what makes Donuts what it is today”), and every other friend that helps put Donuts together each week. “It’s quite hard to find work for a lot of people nowadays, so if I can help someone out, I will,” says Tanner. “If they do some work for me on one of the Donuts events, I’ll make sure they get paid. Working this way has made Donuts a really close-knit, family and friends-type thing.”

Currently taking a summer break, Donuts will be bigger and better than ever before when it returns to the Green Door Store on August 20. A new website, merchandise, and even more Donuts events around the country will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Matt says: “There’s always plenty of stuff going on with Donuts, so if you want to help out, get in contact and get involved.”

Digital festival breaks record with 110 events THE BRIGHTON Digital Festival, the city’s biggest celebration of digital arts and culture, has revealed that a record 110 events have been registered - with more to come. The festival, which runs throughout September, confirmed it has already surpassed previous years, even though there are still four weeks to go. Highlights this year include an exclusive "Black Mirror'’ screening, followed by a question-and-answer session with its creator, Charlie Brooker, the broadcaster, satirist and journalist. The screening takes place on Thursday, September 12 at Duke of York’s Picturehouse; it forms part of the film programme curated by Lighthouse. Free-to-attend art exhibitions throughout the month include the computer art pioneer William Latham’s Mutator 1 + 2 at Phoenix. Local digital firm Clearleft are also using their new building to showcase "The New Sublime", an ambitious, artist-led exhibition from 12 digital artists. Leading digital artist Timo Arnall, is also

exhibiting at Lighthouse, looking at the invisible infrastructures that make up our technological world. A lively discussion is expected at the Corn Exchange on Saturday, September 14 about the impact of social media and the Internet on fuelling misogyny. Feminism 3.0’s panel will feature Lucy-Anne Holmes, the "No More Page 3" campaigner; Suzanne Moore, the Guardian columnist; and Helen Lewis, deputy editor of the New Statesman. The leading international digital and culture conferences, including dConstruct, Reasons to be Creative, and Improving Reality also return in early September, along with the always-popular Brighton Mini Maker Faire on Saturday, September 7. More than 40,000 visitors including families, digital experts, and admirers of digital art - are expected to attend and participate in the many events throughout Brighton in September. Thatcher and compassion combine for Conservative candidate Exclusive by Greg Hadfield IT DOESN’T take long for the talk to turn to Margaret Thatcher. We are sitting in the Ashoka retaurant in Church Road, Hove, a short walk from the King’s House council headquarters, where Clarence Mitchell - newlyselected as the Tory candidate to take on Caroline Lucas in Brighton Pavilion at the 2015 general election - has just attended a Brighton Conservative Association meeting. In his first interview as candidate, Mr Mitchell - a familiar face on our television screens over the last 20 years - is reminiscing about his days as a cub reporter on the Hendon and Finchley Times in the early 1980s. Naturally, the local MP of the time attended the annual Finchley Carnival. Unusually, though, that MP was Mrs Thatcher, the prime minister, taking time out from the storm brewing as a result of industrial action by miners and dockers. And on this occasion, the young Mr Mitchell was - quite literally handed a scoop: a formal statement that represented Mrs Thatcher’s first substantive intervention in the miners’ strike. So proud was she of its contents that she proved she had written it herself by showing the young reporter the original manuscript she kept in her handbag. In the statement, she promised to “do everything necessary to keep the country working” - a comment later interpreted as meaning she would, if necessary, use troops to break the strike. Sensitive to the constituency where he is standing as a first-time candidate, Mr Mitchell, 52, is keen to emphasise the compassionate side of Conservatism. Personal contact with Thatcher was definitely an influence: “I found her an excellent constituency MP, a class act - and, on a personal level, supremely impressive. She was effective and caring. And I use that word carefully.”

Mr Mitchell is a former BBC royal correspondent and spokesperson for the family of Madeleine McCann. He also worked as a civil servant as head of the Government’s Media Monitoring Unit. Currently, he is managing director at Burson-Marsteller, the public affairs firm. He knows that he has a hill to climb if he is to beat either Dr Lucas or even Dr Purna Sen, the recentlyselected Labour Party candidate. In 2010, the Conservatives were nearly 4,000 votes adrift of the Green MP, in third place - and more than 2,700 behind Labour. “Brighton is unique - unique for its inclusivity, its tolerance, its radicalism and its cultural vibrancy,” he says. “It’s also unique for the wrong reasons: a failed Green experiment that continues to let the city down badly. That’s why Brighton Pavilion now needs a unique Conservative candidate - one who may not have a typical Tory CV, but who does have decades of real-world experience gained across the media, government and the private sector.” Affordable homes and jobs for young people are priorities, he says. Mr Mitchell - who plans to move to the constituency shortly, when the lease on his London flat expires - hopes to see David Cameron offering personal support during the

campaign. As a civil servant, though, he worked more closely with George Osborne, the chancellor. “The Greens’ failure to deliver locally has been self-evident on so many levels: recycling rates down, carbon emissions up, a refusal to freeze council tax while remaining hopelessly split internally, and all with the recent spectacle of their own MP opposing them on the picket line as rubbish piled high on the streets.” Mr Mitchell knows he has to take on Dr Sen, too: “Labour, though, are also failing to offer any credible alternative, finding themselves forced to agree with government spending plans as the economy starts to recover, realising they, too, are now losing the economic argument daily.” So will the general election be just a footnote to an alreadyimpressive career, or the beginning of a road to the sort of power he first witnessed as a cub reporter in Finchley? He is, of course, confident. After all, Brighton was Tory-held for 50 years, he concludes: “Voting Conservative offers the only credible way out of the mess that both parties have presented us with: the Greens locally, and the continuing aftermath of 13 years of Labour overspending and borrowing, nationally.”

£14m parking surplus is biggest outside London PARKING charges are providing Brighton and Hove City Council with a surplus of £14.4 million the highest of any local authority outside London. The city council is one of only two authorities outside the capital in the top 10 of a league table compiled by the RAC Foundation. The other is Cornwall. Of 359 councils surveyed, the

surplus from on- and off-street parking charges totalled £565 million in 2011-2012. The top 10 parking surpluses were: Westminster, £41.6m; Kensington and Chelsea, £28.1m; Camden, £25m; Hammersmith and Fulham, £19.5m; Wandsworth, £16.1m; Brighton and Hove, £14.4m; Islington, £10.9m; Cornwall, £7.9m; Newham, £7.3m;

Hounslow, £7.3m. Green Party councillor Ian Davey, deputy leader and lead member for transport, denied the council was profiteering from parking. He said: "We do have a surplus. But all that money is reinvested into parking projects. The city is full." Bad parking: what the law says. See page 8.

Bad parking: what the law says E A car is parked in a cycle lane, with solid white lane

Greg Hadfield OUR DISCLOSURE last week that council officials are preparing for a crackdown on drivers who ruin grass verges by bad parking elicited a remarkable response. On Tuesday - only days after our exclusive report - traffic regulation order notices were posted on lampposts in the two pilot areas in Withdean and Patcham, and in North Portslade. The biggest response from readers, however, focused on questions about what precisely is the legal position - not only relating to parking on verges, but also to parking on pavements and cycle lanes. As we reported, the position is, at best, complex; at worst, it means no effective action can be taken against culprits. The Brighton & Hove Independent asked council officials what the law had to say about six different scenarios, illustrated in the photographs on this page. These are the answers.

A A car is parked on a grass verge, but there are no yellow lines on the adjacent highway

East Sussex Act 1981 - a local bye-law -was adopted by Brighton Borough Council and now Brighton and Hove City Council. But it does not apply in Hove. This makes it an offence, where signs exist, to drive vehicles, motorcycles, or ride horses, on the highway verge. The driving has to be witnessed by a police officer or police community support officer (PCSO). Parking is not an offence. Civil enforcement officers (CEOs) have no power to act.

Where, and if, the new pilot schemes are implemented, CEOs will be able to issue penalty charge notices (PCNs) for vehicles that stop or wait on the grass verge. Highway Code Rule 145 states: “You MUST NOT drive on or over a pavement, footpath or bridleway except to gain lawful access to property, or in the case of an emergency.” Since January 1999, a fixedpenalty notice can be issued, making it simpler for police to take action.Offenders are issued with a ticket, with fine and points attached - unless they appeal, in which case it goes to court. This regulation cannot be used if the police do not see the offence, because they do not have the power to insist that the keeper of a vehicle tells them who was driving at any particular time in relation to driving on the pavement (as they do in relation to speeding offences). Driving on a footway is an offence under both Section 72 of the Highways Act 1835 and Section 34 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Any driver may be prosecuted for doing so, unless a vehicle crossover has been constructed to provide access to private property or in an emergency. Parking on the footway is not an offence in itself. But it may amount to an obstruction under Highways Act 1980 (Section 137): “If a person, without lawful authority or excuse, in any way wilfully obstructs the free passage along a highway he is guilty of an offence“. An obstruction has to be more than a minor one for the police to act - for example, if it prevents the movements of wheelchairs or child buggies or forces pedestrians into the road. The police have powers

to enforce the law against obstruction. And such events should be reported to them in the first instance. Civil enforcement officers have issued warning notices to vehicles parked on the footway and the city council hopes the notices will go some way to help alleviate the problem. They can, however, issue parking tickets on the footway only where there are yellow lines, or if a car is parked partly in a bay and partly on the pavement; they cannot issue tickets for driving on the footway. If it is part of the public highway, a penalty charge notice can be issued by civil enforcement officers, because the waiting restrictions apply to the back of the footway as well. In a controlled parking zone, a vehicle can also be issued with a penalty charge notice if it is parked partly in a parking bay and partly on the pavement - but not if it is parked wholly outside the bay on the pavement.

Most cycle lanes in Brighton and Hove are enforceable, either because they have a solid white line or have yellow lines along their length. But stopping or parking on yellow lines is allowed for a variety of reasons. Without a loading ban, any vehicle that is engaged in loading/unloading activity can also legitimately stop on yellow lines. Disabled badge holders may also park on yellow lines. Mandatory cycle lanes (those with a solid white line) cannot be parked in at any time, with or without double yellow lines in the lane. If a cycle lane is mandatory and a vehicle is parked in it, civil enforcement officers can immediately begin to issue a fine. It is an offence to cross the solid white line. When a vehicle is not stationary, it is a moving offence and, therefore, must be handled by the police. F A car is parked in a cycle lane, with broken white lane

If a cycle lane is advisory marked by a broken white line - but also contains double yellow lines along the kerbside and a vehicle is parked in the lane, civil enforcement officers may be able to immediately begin to issue a penalty charge notice. Or they may have to wait five minutes to begin to issue the notice. There is a difference, depending on the restrictions of the specific area. The legal status of some yellow lines may restrict any type of standing, waiting, loading and, therefore, give the power to the civil enforcement officers to act immediately. Other yellow lines may not have such restrictions and, therefore, the have to wait a period of time before beginning to issue a fine.

Census sheds more light on city life LATEST data from the 2011 census has shed new light on the lives of citizens in Brighton and Hove. The major release - the fourth in an ongoing series - focuses on “local characteristics” across the United Kingdom, cross-tabulating two or more datasets about ethnicity, identity, language and religion. Published on Wednesday, it shows that only 550 Asian or Asian British were among the 11,051 unemployed people in the city when the census was taken on March 278 2011; 426 were black, African, Caribbean, or black British; 815 were categorised as “other white”, mainly from eastern Europe. Of all those who described themselves as unemployed, 3,212 were full-time students. The data shows that 243,512 of citizens - 89% - are categorised as white, with 17,071 born in Europe outside the British Isles - of which 14,739 were born in countries that are members of the European Union (9,130 in countries that were members in March 2001; 5,609 in countries that acceded between April 2001 and March 2011).

In addition, 6,860 were born in Africa; 10,650 in the MIddle East; 3,972 in The Americas and the Caribbean; and 1,655 in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia. When analysed, data that will attract significant attention may be that which relates to proficiency in English, the social class of various ethnic groups, and the professed identity of individuals. A total of 25,508 residents in Brighton and Hove declared an identity other than British, English, Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Irish. Of 26,509 people in higher managerial, administrative and professional occupations, a total of 24,193 (91%) are white. Asian or Asian British residents - who comprise 4.1% of population - also account for 4.1% of higher managerial jobs (1,095 in total). Black, African, Caribbean, or black British residents - who comprise 1.5% of the population account for 1.1% of top jobs (294 in total). THE MAIN tourism website for Brighton and Hove has reported record traffic. Visitbrighton.com - run by the city council’s tourism arm had 225,000 unique visitors last month. For the first time, it also recorded more than one million page-views. John Carmichael, VisitBrighton's marketing manager, said: “This is more than a 25 per cent increase on site traffic in July 2012. Fear, Sharia and one law for all Jean Calder THERE ARE few things so "ex-" as an unsuccessful ex-candidate for parliamentary selection. Once the winning candidate is selected, the election campaign proper begins. The pretender must quietly withdraw, being of no further interest. Anne Marie Waters - the National Secular Society council member and lesbian feminist who stood against Purna Sen in Labour’s selection for Brighton Pavilion, - was the loser in the recent battle. As a result, she has disappeared from political view, although I guess she may attend Pride this weekend. Waters’s experience of the battle must have been bruising. She was defeated overwhelmingly by the local candidate. As a member of the organisation One Law for All, she was also subject to scrutiny about her views on Sharia law - views that some regarded as “islamophobic”. Local newspapers - including this one - highlighted her anti-Sharia stance and her views on religion and immigration. They juxtaposed information about Dr Sen’s background as a childhood immigrant from India and highlighted the fact that Waters’s views about Sharia - the moral and religious code that governs the lives of many orthodox Muslims - had received unwanted endorsement from the far-right English Defence League (EDL). There had been an earlier online campaign against Waters. Andy Newman, writing for the organisations Socialist Unity and Left Futures, referred to Waters as “the worst possible potential Labour PPC”, an “anti-islam extremist” with “bigoted, antireligious views”, claiming the Brighton party was “on the edge

of an abyss”. Newman linked her with the EDL and asserted that she had said that “religiously observant Muslims should leave the UK”. Newman also criticised her for writing to object to the planned visit to the UK of the now-former Pope, failing to mention that the letter was co-signed by almost 60 other prominent journalists, academics and thinkers. Waters is evidently a secularist, with strong and critical views about religion - not uncommon these days among people of Irish Catholic background. She is blunt, undiplomatic and perhaps rash, but not, I think, islamophobic. Islamophobia, by definition, implies unfair discrimination, whereas Waters demands that Muslims - and people of other faiths and none - have exactly the same rights and obligations. Waters is blamed for being a vocal opponent of Sharia law, but she has that in common with many progressive Muslims who seek the protection of universal law. The Muslim journalist Yasmin Alibhai Brown spoke in 2010 at

a conference of One Law for All about her deep concern about the intrusion of religious bigotry into political discourse and the specific danger Sharia poses to the rights of women and children. Alibhai Brown writes passionately about the increasing influence of what Geoffrey Robertson QC once called the

Sharia law - in common with other religious law - poses specific dangers for women, homosexuals and children “indelibly sexist legal regime of Sharia law”. When Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, controversially suggested that Sharia courts might be acceptable to assist with “family problems”, Alibhai Brown responded with rage, saying: “Many will be sent back to bastard husbands or flinty-eyed

mullahs will take their children away. In Bradford and Halifax, they may be forbidden to drive or work where men are employed. Adultery will be punished. I don’t think we will have public stonings but violence of some sort will be meted out (it already is) with lawmakers’ backing.” Dr Shaaz Mahboob - like Alibhai Brown a member of British Muslims for Secular Democracy - has warned: “Any introduction of Sharia law would almost certainly lead to the curtailment of women’s rights in cases such as inheritance, reducing their share to less than half of what a male heir would expect. Similarly the testimony of a woman would be valued at half of that of a man in a Sharia court. Modern forensic evidence, DNA technology and CCTV footage would be deemed inadmissible, should a case of alleged adultery be under trial; instead, the court would have to rely solely on the testimony of four credible male witnesses.” Anne Marie Waters may

be blunt, but is nothing in comparison to Taj Hargey, a historian and Islamic theologian, who runs the Muslim Education Centre in Oxford. He wrote: “Sharia is nothing but a human concoction of medieval religious opinion, largely archaic and outmoded and irrelevant to life today. Most Sharia contradicts the letter and spirit of the Koran….” As a person of faith from a Christian tradition, I want to live in a just secular state in which human rights are protected. Sharia law - in common with other religious law - undermines the principle of universal justice and poses specific dangers for women, homosexuals and children. Wildflower seeds collected for posterity WILDFLOWER seeds from Bevendean Down have been gathered and safely stored in the Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank to preserve them for future generations. The seeds were collected by experts from Kew working with Brighton and Hove City Council’s countryside team. The project aims to collect seed from the country’s best downland sites to create new wildflower sites in the city centre as well as providing seed to the Millennium Seed Bank, based at Wakehurst Place, Ardingly. The seeds were collected with a special "brush harvester" machine, which brushes the top of the meadow to knock the seeds out and catch them. As well as using the harvester, volunteers have been handharvesting seed that cannot be collected mechanically, from sites around the city. They include a variety of native orchids that requires specialist techniques to grow. The council has been working with the farmer and the Friends of Bevendean Down for 20 years; the site was the first chalk grassland area where sheep-

grazing was re-introduced. Jason Kitcat, leader of the council, said: “We are delighted that Kew has recognised how good the site is and have targeted it to use for seed collection for the Millennium Seed Bank. It’s a fitting tribute to the hard work and team effort of the farmer, the friends group and the council’s countryside team.” Seed collected is being shared by the Millennium Seed Bank and the council’s nursery at Stanmer Park, where it is being grown on with the help of a group of specially-recruited volunteers, to produce plug plants and create further wildflower areas in the city centre as well as for sale to the public. Ted Chapman, Kew's coordinator of the UK Native Seed Hub at Wakehurst, added: “Bevendean is a beautiful and botanically-rich site; we counted over 60 plant species in just a short walk through the site. “Unlike much of our remaining chalk grassland it is also relatively accessible, so is a perfect source of local-origin seed to support conservation and habitat restoration in Brighton and the South Downs.”

Lighting the fuse for entrepreneurs Richard Morris Fledgling creative and digital firms are being offered the chance to benefit from a support package that includes top mentors from within the city. Wired Sussex, a membership organisation for companies and freelancers, wants to work with emerging entrepreneurs to help them develop their businesses and connect with the ever-increasing network of digital experts setting up shop in Brighton and Hove. It has launched a new support service called The FuseBox Amp and hopes the pilot project can transform the businesses and live of six ambitious and creative people. But who exactly could benefit from their help? Wired Sussex explained: “We don’t care about their background, or how much experience they have. We are interested in the person they are today - and the impact they want to make in the future. “We are looking for people who have started creative business

projects which are still at an early stage and have a need for support. Their project might be a start-up, a new product or service in an existing business, or a project to pivot a business from one business model to another. “It doesn’t have to be the perfect project…yet. But their idea does need to be interesting because we’re looking for people with projects we feel excited about giving time, space and contacts to.” The Fusebox Amp will run from August 27 until September 20. And the support on offer will be tailored to the needs of the six individuals involved. There is a cost involved for those selected to take part – with a £300 fee, half of which will be due at the start and half at the end of the four weeks. Time for i360 to put up – or shut up Mike Holland WELL the sun doesn’t shine all the time, even in Brighton. I was down on the front this week on a wet, windy late-July day and I was pretty much on my own. It made me wonder, yet again, where these fabled i360 customers are going to come from on a daily basis. I have challenged the financial projections of both our fine council and the architectural practice of Marks Barfield on several occasions. To date I have not received a satisfactory reply and am somewhat puzzled that there are still people who really seem to believe this madcap scheme is likely to go ahead. Marks Barfield, who are behind the scheme have been big-hatting it for long enough. It’s high time they came up with the goods or owned up to the fact

it simply isn’t going to happen. Our city council has agreed in one form or another to stump up £17 million towards the projected £38 million cost. We are told that £3 million of this is by way of a repayable grant, with the rest being a direct interest-bearing loan from us. Right: how does that work then? According to my maths 17 from 38 leaves 21. Where is the £21 million coming from exactly? Because if it’s a loan, I cannot imagine anyone that I have ever heard of lending £21 million on a second charge behind the council on any investment - let alone one as speculative as this. It is high time we had some proper answers, which - as council-tax-payers and prospective funders of this lunatic scheme - we are entitled to. My favourite quote from Winston Churchill is very apt in this particular case: “No matter how beautiful the strategy, occasionally you must look at the results.” Well, as I am sure most of us would agree, the results are there

for all to see: a huge section of our seafront resembles a wartorn battle zone. Occasionally, crackpot schemes come off. But this doesn’t seem to be one of them and I think most of us would like our seafront back please, as this lunacy really needs to stop.

Let’s, for goodness sake, not leave what’s left of this heritage site in the hands of the West Pier, aka i360 Trust, either. In 1983, they started out with a pier, turned down more development schemes than you can shake a stick at and have now ended up with a burnt-out

Student’s dark humour wins short-story prize

A Time of Gifts, by Patrick Leigh Fermor THIS is the perfect book if you grew a little weary of the recent sun and heat. Or if you find yourself again stuck in a hot airless room, dreaming of going on holiday. It will conjure up frosty forests, cascading waterfalls, and pine trees weighed down with snow. Patrick – “Paddy” to all who knew him - left England in 1932 to travel, on foot, from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. This book will sweep you along with tales of monasteries and glittering domes, castles perched on rocks, grand rivers, storks and frogs - taking in the grand hospitality of a way of life that was already fading fast. The writing is majestic and wonderful, and you can almost feel the fiery aquavit sliding down your parched throat after a day of tramping through the glittering snow.

It’s a magical book and makes you desperate to meet the man (sadly, no longer with us) who was such a swashbuckling writer. His life has been captured by Artemis Cooper in her brilliant study of him called Patrick Leigh Fermor – an Adventure. He was a fearless fighter during the war and much decorated; he was also most certainly a rogue and a ladies’ man. And we all know how appealing they can be! So put some ice in your drink and ignore all those friends who are sweltering in an over-priced villa somewhere that you were a little jealous about and slip away to the cool leafy woods. You won’t regret it.

A PROMISING storyteller has won a national prize after taking up an adult evening class in creative writing. Nicola Davies won a cash prize of £200 and a string of plaudits for her effort, which saw off competition from about 200 other entries from across the United Kingdom. Her story, Taking Care of Business, was her first attempt at putting pen to paper and she says she would not had had the confidence to compete had it not been for the support and encouragement of her class tutor at City College in Brighton. Speaking to Brighton & Hove Independent shortly after hearing of her triumph, she said: “I couldn’t believe that my story was chosen as the winner. It was such an honour. “Before undertaking the creative writing course at City College, I‘d never have had the confidence to enter a writing competition, or the tools to create something that would be judged so highly.

“I learnt so much, and really enjoyed meeting other writers and working with such a supportive tutor.” And the tutor in question, Heather Reay, was equally delighted. She said: “I was thrilled when she won such a prestigious competition. “Nicola combined a willingness to follow advice with hard work and attention to detail, turning her raw talent into professional standard writing “She thoroughly deserves it.” The team of judges who oversaw the contest - organised by West Sussex Writers - were bowled over by the quality of Taking Care of Business. A darklyhumorous tale, the story is built round a mild-mannered geography teacher, who balances life in the classroom and a second job as a professional “hit man”. “It was hard work to get the entries down to a long list of 20 and then a short list of 10, which was judged by the writer Simon Brett, our patron,” explained Sarah Palmer,

chairman of West Sussex Writers. “Taking Care of Business stood out for its humour, quirky storyline, and strong character viewpoint. Simon praised Nicola for understanding the importance of apparently-banal details in crime writing.” Ms Davies has now set her sights on developing her newfound talent, but was also quick to encourage others to enrol with City College’s impressive adult learning programme, whether in creative writing or another of the hundreds of course on offer.

Olympian effort? It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since the Olympics and Paralympics. I was lucky enough to get tickets, in the ‘lottery’, to attend both. So last summer my time was spent travelling up and down to East London. At each event I was inspired by the competitors. How each did their absolute best, even if they didn’t win. The audience cheered and cheered, we especially cheered for those who came last. No effort went unrewarded. Whilst there I bought two posters to hang on the wall in my office. These remind me that no effort at having a ‘talking divorce’ will go unrewarded. All clients who engage in a process where they actively engage with their ex partners, and put the children first if they have them, reaps huge benefits. Sometimes the work we do is hard. It’s ‘Olympian’ to be the best person you can be when going through a divorce. I don’t forget that and hopefully the posters hanging on my wall remind me to be the best I can be too.

Brighton diabetes expert seeks Theresa May backing The science of stem cells Frank le Duc

A BRIGHTON UNIVERSITY professor has urged Theresa May, the home secretary, to support calls for more funding for research and trials to fight the disorder. Professor Adrian Bone said Ms May’s announcement that she has Type 1 diabetes had brought into sharp focus the plight of 400,000 others like her in Britain. Their condition is estimated to cost the country about £2 billion a year. Prof Bone, a leading expert on the disease, said: “I greatly sympathise with the home secretary and hope she will join us in fighting this distressing and debilitating disease. “We would very much welcome an increase in funding to research possible cures but also to tackle the serious problem of misdiagnosis among older people. “This issue is central to the need for a major clinical trial that would not only help to more fully characterise the disease process but at the same time increase awareness and the chances of early diagnosis.” Prof Bone, professor of cell and

molecular biology, leads a Brighton University team of scientists focusing on diabetes. They are working on research into how viral infection may play an important role in triggering the development of diabetes and into the development of a vaccine. Prof Bone is also looking into ways to stimulate the pancreas to restart the production of insulin in diabetics. He chaired a round-table discussion on beta cell renewal which is regarded as a major prospect for helping Type 1 patients restart their own insulin production. The group included leading British and European Type 1 diabetes researchers who said that there were too many barriers preventing more clinical trials that could alleviate the disease.

The group is supported by Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the leading diabetes charity that claims that people with Type 1 diabetes are being denied the opportunity to join trials. The charity also said that only 3% of patients were taking part in clinical trials. Its report, which Prof Bone contributed to, was launched at the House of Commons in June.

Prof Bone said that Type 1 diabetes was on the increase, particularly in children under five, making the need to support research into the condition more urgent than ever. Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented by adopting a healthy diet or lifestyle. Those diagnosed require insulin treatment via injections or a pump every day for the rest of their lives simply to stay alive.

THE science of stem cell research and the truth behind the hyperbolic headlines will be discussed at public meeting later this month. Sussex University's Centre for Bionetworking is organising a free screening of an award-winning film, "Stem Cell Revolutions: Vision of the future". The film, featuring hand-drawn animations and interviews with leading stem-cell scientists, charts the history and scientific evolution of stem-cell research – from the earliest experiments that first revealed stem cells in the body, to leading current scientific and clinical developments. Clare Blackburn, one of the makers of the 70-minute documentary, will introduce the film, which will be followed by a question-and-answer session - including an expert panel hosted by Nattaka Chaisinthop, a research fellow at Sussex University. The meeting will be at Brighton Friends' Meeting House in Ship Street, starting at 7pm on Tuesday, August 13.

Life and death: Let’s take Pride global

Simon Fanshawe THERE is so much to celebrate at Pride this year. In the United Kingdom, we have reached the natural legislative conclusion of what must have been the fastest social change in memory.

Since the Labour government introduced a raft of equality legislation, there has been an extraordinary turnabout for the “Lady’s-not-for-turning-party”, with David Cameron championing gay marriage. We may feel slightly sorry for

him that, politically, it backfired. If he had wanted it to “detoxify” the Conservatives from being the nasty party - as the current Home Secretary famously put it - it failed, as most of his party voted against it. But you have to give it to him, personally: he stuck with it. And

in no other country has a prime minister driven the change through the legislature. In the United States, the Supreme Court finally repealed the misjudged Clinton legislation know as DOMA – the Defence Of Marriage Act. And 13 states have

passed legislation making same-sex marriage legal. President Obama supports it; Hilary Clinton supports it; and even senior Republican commentators, such as Rush Limbaugh, openly admit that they were made to look like the ones... Continued on page 20

In March, Time magazine published a double cover of two women and two men kissing and announced, in advance of the Supreme Court’s June decision, that “gay marriage is already won”, going along with what the magazine described as a “clear majority of the American public”. Gay marriage is now legal in 16 countries from Argentina to Canada, South Africa, Norway, Portugal and

Venezuela, where the new Pope Francis, then Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglia, was on the wrong side of history when he called gay marriage “a great lie” and gay adoption “child abuse”. No, Your Holiness! Leaving your children in the care of Catholic priests is child abuse. So all is quiet on the Western front then. The trouble is, however, that all is not well in the global South. Every day, we read of a resurgence of homophobia. Lesbians and gays are being imprisoned and tortured, persecuted and killed, and legislated against in the 76 countries where

same-sex relationships are still illegal; in the 36 countries in Africa; in the five countries where it is punishable with death. We read of the murder of David Kato, in January 2011. Kato was “Uganda’s first openly-gay man”. He was extraordinarily brave. When, in 2010, the Ugandan magazine “Rolling Stone” - couldn’t the emblematically liberal US title of the same name sue them? -named 100 gay men under the headline “Hang Them”, he took them to court and won. On January 3, the court delivered its judgement that the naming of people with incitements to

violence threatened Kato’s and others’ “fundamental rights and freedoms”. On January 26, he was murdered. In an unprecedented way, world leaders spoke out and condemned the murder - while the Ugandan Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity (sic) went on the record saying: “Homosexuals can forget about human rights”. The so-called “Kill the Gays Bill” still hovers over the country, with parliament threatening to legislate for the death penalty for gays. In Nigeria, they just passed the banning of same-sex marriage bill. In June, the gay activist, Eric

Lembembe, the executive director of the Cameroon AIDS Foundation, was beaten to death. In Jamaica, which Human Rights Watch describes as suffering from “an epidemic of homophobic violence”, a teenage cross-dresser was recently unmasked at a party in Montego Bay and stabbed to death by a mob. In Russia, Putin has become the Czar of Homophobia and championed law in the Duma outlawing the “propaganda of non-traditional relations”. Two Dutch film-makers have just been arrested under the law while making a documentary about

Russian gay activists. There is both an irony to this homophobic backlash - and something to give us hope. The irony is that our celebrations in the West do two contradictory things. The internet carries our victories and our campaigns worldwide to activists. It gives them strength and inspires them. Yet at the same time those victories precisely add fuel to the fire of our opponents and oppressors in the South, as activists in Africa, Asia and Russia find it increasingly difficult to decouple our victories from their struggles. As they are fighting for their

lives, our victories are used against them. “Don’t colonise us twice,” said the president of the Gambia, as he argued that homosexuality was being exported from the West and must be drummed out of his country. As the Evangelicals have lost the agenda in the socially-liberal West, and are increasingly ridiculed, they have moved their focus to the South, where they are welcomed with open arms by the churches of Uganda, Nigeria, or Belize. Where we can take hope is that this iron fist of repression doesn’t come out of the blue. It is a reaction

to the astonishing upswing of gay activism globally. Again, the internet enables gay activists to find each other and organise as never before. So there are lesbian and gay campaigns visible now in countries, cities, towns and villages where ten years ago, five years ago, that was unimaginable. The genie is our of the bottle. Counter-intuitively, the repression is a sign of our increasing strength worldwide. As Pride in Brighton gathers its strength again, let’s turn our voices, our brains and, yes, even our sequins

towards those of our fellows in other countries and give Brighton Pride next year the theme of “Freedom to Live” and raise money not only for ourselves, but also for those brave people fighting for rights where they can can’t even come out for fear of retribution, can’t live their lives for fear of violence or death, let alone walk down the main street of their own city arm in arm, smiling, laughing and basking in the equality we have achieved. Let’s dedicate ourselves to making Pride possible in all those other places. And on the main stage

ROBIN COUSINS, the Olympic champion skater and head judge on ITV's Dancing on Ice, has revealed plans for an ambitious new production, with its world premiere early next year. The production, entitled Robin Cousins' Ice - The Skating Stage Experience - has a budget of nearly £4 million and is already booked for a 15-venue UK tour, including the Brighton Centre Mr Cousins emphasised that the dance-based show, for which rehearsals will begin shortly, is not an adaptation of a ballet, or borrowed from the world of musical theatre. It will feature 14 handpicked skaters from the United States, Canda, Japan, and Australia, as well from the UK and continental Europe. "It is a show where the

choreography is driven by the music, where the movement has room to breathe, and the skaters can let their blades do the talking," Mr Cousins said. "To be able to move like a skater is every dancer’s dream. To be motionless, yet travelling at great speed. Skaters are able to soar across the frozen stage in ways a dancer can only dream of doing." Sound design will be by Gareth Owen, twice-nominated for a Tony award - for A Little Night Music and for End of the Rainbow. Lighting designer will be Tim Mitchell, praised for his West End work, including The Sound of Music and Singing in the Rain. A pair of pre-season matches at the Amex Stadium were watched by more than 10,000 fans. A game against Spanish side Villarreal drew a crowd of more than 12,000, while 10,000 watched the Seagulls draw with Premier League Norwich City. BHA looks set to sell more than 23,000 season tickets this year.

A total of £1million has been earmarked to help make life in Brighton and Hove easier for those living with dementia. The cash will be spent on redesigning hospital wards, GP surgeries and other sites for the estimated 3,000 sufferers who live in the city.

Half a dozen parks in Brighton and Hove have been given Green Flag status. Easthill Park, Hove Park, Kipling Gardens, Preston Park, St Ann’s Well Gardens and Stoneham Park have all been praised for their cleanliness. Councillor Pete West, said: “It’s fantastic news.”

Council bosses may have to look into developing green spaces surrounding Brighton after a shortfall in space was unearthed. The city council found has found space for 11,300 new homes – but is under pressure from government to find land for 19,000.

The first Trans Pride celebration to be held anywhere in Britain took place in Brighton last weekend. The New Steine Gardens took centre stage, with venues across the city joining in to host music, film screenings, a dance party, and a host of performances. See page 22 (left) for photographs.

Seagulls fans celebrated after the club announced a terrace favourite had returned to the flock. David Lopez, nicknamed Spanish Dave, signed a oneyear deal weeks after leaving the Albion. The change of heart was warmly welcomed by fans.

A strange online advert offering a free home in Brighton to anyone willing to dress as a walrus is set to be made into a film. The original ad was taken off line after going viral – but not before being seen by movie-maker Kevin Smith who will now shoot the film.

Using only the finest locally sourced ingredients and homemade sour dough recipe, the menu is complemented by

an impressive collection of 28 international beers. Malcolm Bluemel, co-founder of Pizza7, commented: “We wanted to create a restaurant that was intrinsically different from the traditional Brighton pizzeria. Our menu of seven pizzas will be changed regularly to make the best of the ingredients available each season.” Pizza7, Ship Street is open now to the public.

FOSSIL, the leading American watches, bags and accessories retailer, is opening its first store in Brighton at Churchill Square shopping centre. The new 1,400 square-foot store will open this month between HMV and River Island - which is itself relocating to a larger, 10,000 square-foot unit within the centre.

KING ALFRED Leisure Centre is set to benefit from £50k of improvement works following a significant investment from not-for-profit trust Freedom Leisure who operate the centre on behalf of Brighton & Hove City Council. The redevelopment is due to be completed in early autumn and once the work is finished, there will be three brand new studio areas for indoor cycling, aerobic-based classes and functional training sessions. Charity and digital sectors lead way on Living Wage THE CHARITY and digital sectors are leading the way with the most signups to the Brighton and Hove Living Wage campaign. Eleven charities and 13 digital firms are now on board with the scheme, which calculates the amount a person needs to live on – currently £7.45 an hour - rather than just survive on. The Whitehawk Inn is a charity providing training, careers advice and support for adults who are disadvantaged by lack of skills, poor employment prospects, poverty and ill-health. Frances Duncan, its director, said: “We work with people who live in poverty, so it would be wrong to pay our staff less than the Living Wage. Despite the difficult economic climate, we’ve led by example, and were the first charity to sign up in Brighton and Hove.” Digicave was one of the first digital firms to pledge its support. It is a Brighton-based modelling and design company, specialising in sculptural photography, 3D-modelling and augmented reality, working across a range of industries including architecture, gaming and education. Al Tredinnick, Digicave's chief operating officer, said: “We were

already paying the Living Wage, as no one would work for less in this industry. But on a moral side we always would and I know I speak for the whole digital community. I agree with the Living Wage as I don’t see how people can get by on less money. “I realise not all firms can afford to pay the Living Wage, but I don’t understand why some people are against it - because even if it’s not right for your business, it’s still a brilliant idea.” The number of companies who have pledged their support for the campaign is 80. The other charities who have signed up are: Sussex Community Foundation, Grace Eyre, CVSF, Brighton Housing Trust, Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, Brighton Women’s Centre, Mind in Brighton & Hove, Grassroots Suicide Prevention, Adventure Unlimited and Rockinghorse. The event, held at Bohemia Brighton in Meeting House Lane, celebrated the re-brand of Andus Print to Gemini Brighton - highlighting it as one of the most eco-friendly and most expert printers in the city. To mark the occasion, Gemini Brighton welcomed local councillors, representative from all areas of the

media, and more than 150 leading regional businesses. John Boyle, owner of Gemini Group owner, said it was a key strategic move to identify the print operation, based in Hollingbury, as part of the Gemini Group. During his speech, he emphasised that buying print locally was good for the economy and good for the environment, reducing transport as well as fuel emissions.

The event also included a speech by Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the city council's economic development and culture committee. Cllr Bowden is a former student at the London College of Printing who qualified in print management in his younger days. punky red-haired assassin Yukio (Japanese model Rila Fukushima), he’s persuaded to accompany her to Japan, summoned by Lord Yashida (Hal Yamanouchi), a wealthy, dying industrialist whose life he saved during WWII. However, things don’t go quite according to plan and soon Logan finds himself on the run with Yashida’s grand-daughter Mariko

The Good Jackman, needless to say, knows this character inside out at this point and he’s predictably brilliant as Logan, while Fukushima makes a strong impression as Yukio (she’s so good, in fact, that you can’t understand why Logan doesn’t fancy her instead) and Khodchenkova puts in an enjoyably slinky turn as Viper. The film is also impressively shot, courtesy of cinematographer Ross Emery, who gets great use out of some authentic Japanese locations. Mangold proves a solid choice as director and does a terrific job with the fight sequences, eschewing rapid-fire editing in favour of single takes that ensure that you can actually tell who’s hitting who.

He also delivers some enjoyable action set-pieces, most notably a spectacular fight on the roof of a 300 mph bullet train (where those claws come in pretty handy) and an impressive sequence that features an audacious lift from Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood.

The Bad The main problem with the film is that the plot is needlessly convoluted, so it occasionally stumbles a little in the middle section, before being more or less jettisoned in favour of a climactic showdown between Wolverine and yet another Marvel supervillain. The film also suffers from a distinct lack of chemistry between Jackman and Tao Okamoto, none of which is helped by Janssen popping up in her night attire every few minutes. Worth seeing? The Wolverine is an enjoyable superhero flick that should please die-hard fans of the character, though it’s slightly let down by some unclear plotting and a lack of chemistry between the two leads.

British families feel the squeeze of summer holidays AS CHILDREN break up for the school summer holidays, new research released by Buyagift. com shows Britain's parents spend a staggering £9.5 billion on entertaining their kids during the six-week break. A study by the leading online gifting and experience website found most parents spend £1,232 on keeping their children entertained during the summer holiday. Research by Buyagift.com of 1,000 parents found that by the time kids go back to school the average family will have spent; £472 on childcare, £388 on day trips in the UK and £372 on food and drink. The survey found parents are shunning expensive, stressful family holidays in favour of UK day trips, with over a third of British parents deciding not to go on holiday at all this year. Half of parents say they are put off by the cost, with research showing they spend £853 on entertaining the kids on a one

week holiday - more than double the amount spent across the six-week break on one-day trips and activities. Almost one in five (17%) parents say the stress of going away puts them off while the same number say it's too difficult booking time off work, or coordinating work schedules with their other half. The overwhelming majority of parents (89%) say they find day trips to the coast or theme parks the least stressful summer holiday family activity – more enjoyable than going abroad or staying at

home cooped up with the kids. Almost one third of parents (29%) say holidays abroad too stressful while almost a quarter (24%) say staying at home all day drives them round the bend. More than half of parents (53%) acknowledge they prefer day trips because they are cheaper, one in 10 (13%) say they are less stressful and almost a quarter of mums and dads (23%) think days out mean kids get to experience a wider variety of activities. Record fall in cost of car insurance MOTORISTS will welcome the biggest fall in car insurance premiums ever recorded by the AA's British Insurance Premium Index. The average Shoparound quote for an annual comprehensive car insurance policy fell to £594.86, dropping 9.8% from £659.53 in July 2012. Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "This fall, the biggest the AA's Index has recorded since it started in 1994, is the sixth successive quarterly drop in premiums. It will be welcome news for hardpressed motorists facing sharp fuel price increases." The Shoparound index is an average of the five cheapest quotes for each in a nationwide basket of ‘customers', from insurance companies, brokers and price comparison sites. "Insurers were facing a fastwidening gap between premium income and claims costs, largely driven by whiplash injury claims and fraud which saw very sharp premium increases between 2009 and 2011," Mr Douglas said. "That gap is closing and premiums are falling again thanks to competition, as well as improved fraud detection by the insurance industry and tightening of the law that is beginning to curb the number of spurious new whiplash injury claims. The news* that hundreds of rogue ‘no-win no-fee' claims firms have been reined in is welcome and in part, falling insurance premiums reflect that. "I hope that Britain's shameful reputation as being the ‘whiplash claim capital of Europe' will now be put behind us. However, Mr Douglas says that the motor insurance industry still faces many challenges: for example bringing down the high frequency and cost of crashes involving young drivers and uninsured driving He also points out that the gender-neutral insurance environment, following a European Court of Justice ruling which came into effect last December, has seen premiums for young men falling while those for women have either remained static or have risen by much less than expected.

Honda tops What Car? reliability chart for eight years running HONDA has once again been named the most reliable car manufacturer in the annual What Car? and Warranty Direct Reliability Survey. This result means Honda has taken the much sought after title for an unprecedented eight years in a row, further reinforcing Honda's reputation for building rock-solid, dependable cars. This achievement is attributed to Honda’s robust manufacturing practices which have resulted in low failure rates and lower than average repair costs for customers. The What Car? and Warranty Direct Reliability Survey is based on real claims data and is a compilation of reviews and opinions of over 50,000 car owners. It takes into account the average yearly repair costs, common model issues and the owners overall reliability score for their car. Honda models feature prominently throughout the survey with the British built Jazz and Civic continuing to do well in their respective classes, as does the Accord, while the HR-V was named

the most reliable compact SUV. Fifth of female drivers risking lives on the road through missed tyre checks WOMEN drivers are taking unnecessary risks on the road because they lack confidence in simple car maintenance, research from Hankook Tyre UK Ltd has found. A startling 22 per cent of female drivers have never checked their tyre pressure and a further 43 per cent haven’t in more than a month - the recommended maximum amount of time between checks. Additionally, 15 per cent of women never check the condition of their tyres, compared with just 5 per cent of men, and just 21 per cent do so before a long journey. With illegal, defective or under inflated tyres contributing to around 700 accidents every year, drivers are putting themselves and other road users in serious danger by not carrying out simple checks. Tony Lee, managing director, Hankook Tyre UK Ltd commented: “The average UK car is now over 7 years old, so regular maintenance checks are crucial to ensure that a vehicle is roadworthy. Tyres should be

inspected at least every month for wear and tear, the air pressure should be checked and the tread depth measured. “Most petrol stations offer access to an air pump that is easy to use and drivers can find the recommended tyre pressure for their vehicle in its handbook. It’s so simple to check and only takes a couple of minutes. There’s really no excuse!” In spite of this, 44 per cent of female drivers don’t feel confident checking their tyre pressure, compared with just 19 per cent of males. Other basic maintenance tasks were also affected, with only 22 per cent of women feeling able to correctly change a headlight or braking light bulb. The biggest gender divide lay in changing a wheel. Just 16 per cent of women felt that they could carry out the task, while over 60 per cent of men were perfectly comfortable. Surprisingly, however, women were more likely to be happy filling up with petrol, as a worrying 21 per cent of men didn’t feel

confident at the pump. Tony added: “Whether male or female, it’s important that drivers understand how to carry out simple maintenance tasks. Often people expect these jobs to be complicated but after being shown how to do something, such as checking the oil level, they can easily do it for themselves.” Confidence seems to be the overriding issue, with almost 60 per cent of women saying they had a poor or very poor understanding of car mechanics. Because of this, many women are asking male relatives to help out when it comes to car maintenance. 38 per cent reported that their husband or partner took their car to the garage when it needed mechanical work, while a further 10 per cent asked a male relative or friend. This is something that is seen a lot in garages, according to Grace Fowkes, manager of Fowkes Auto: “Garages have changed a lot over the years and are much less intimidating than they used to be. Even so, many women still don’t

feel comfortable going to a garage on their own. They often feel that they don’t know the first thing about cars and couldn’t talk to the mechanics about a problem. “We’ve tried to make women feel more welcome at our garage but more needs to be done elsewhere. Women only events are a great way to get ladies along to find out about cars and to reassure them that they can trust a garage not to exploit their lack of knowledge.” Hankook found that 62 per cent of women had a limited or no knowledge of car mechanics and had to trust the mechanic on many decisions. Tony Lee of Hankook concludes: “Just understanding the basics of car maintenance can make you feel more confident when talking to mechanics. Anyone who isn’t sure how to do things like check the oil level or fill up the screenwash should check their car’s manual. Most key maintenance tasks will be explained in there.”
