Green MP Caroline Lucas is to fight charges resulting from her arrest at an “anti-fracking” protest at Balcombe.

She has decided to plead not guilty at a hearing next week and face the ordeal of a trial, which is not expected to take place until next year, Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal.

Dr Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, was arrested with 29 other protesters and subsequently charged with obstructing the highway and failing to comply with police instructions imposed on the protest.

Her decision to fight the charges is disclosed in an open letter to her constituents, in which she explains what led her to do what she did outside the Cuadrilla drilling site at Balcombe, West Sussex.

In the letter, which we publish exclusively today on page 10, Dr Lucas says: “The campaign to reduce the threat of climate change has been incredibly important to me

throughout my political life.”

Dr Lucas - who is being advised

by Kellys Solicitors, of Brighton - is expected to enter her not guilty plea at a hearing at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (October 16).

She is charged with one count of breaching Section 14 of the Public Order Act and one count of wilful obstruction of the highway. Both offences are alleged to have taken place on August 19.

In her open letter, she alludes

to Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that “silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly”; she also assures constituents her work as an MP will not be affected.

She concludes: “There is a proud tradition of non-violent direct action in this country. In joining the peaceful protest, I wanted to send a clear message to the government, and to support the people at the proposed fracking site in Balcombe

who were standing up to be counted.”

Last night, political rivals were reluctant to be drawn on Dr Lucas’s decision while legal proceedings continued. Clarence Mitchell, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion, said: “Voters in Brighton Pavilion would want her to be working on behalf of the constituency – not getting arrested for whatever reason, in whatever cause.”

Brighton Buses in line for community award Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company has been shortlisted in the UK Bus Awards 2013 for its police liaison officer initiative developed in partnership with Sussex Police.

The category in which this unique alliance has been shortlisted is within The Bus and Community Award category. The award is designed to recognise and reward a scheme or project that provides benefits to the local community.

Brighton & Hove nominated bus-driver Gary Foster to work with Sussex Police on the "employer-supported policing scheme". Gary has his wages paid by the bus company, as his employer, but works for Sussex Police.

This has created a direct link

between the bus company and the police force, with improved understanding and joint working as a result.

Gary’s role has seen him assisting with patrols, working in specialist areas such as roadtraffic collisions, the city council's anti-social behaviour team, conducting reassurance patrols, and engaging with the local community.

Gary - who has access to CCTV footage from buses - played a big part in “Operation Blower”, as a result of which 52 arrests have been made to date in an effort to stop offenders continuing to cause criminal damage to buses and engaging in anti-social behaviour generally across the city.

Gary is also involved in a plain-clothes-officer deployment

on buses in order to keep an eye on anti-social behaviour and deal with it where necessary.

Secrets of a “superfused” city

The vibrancy of creative and digital businesses in Brighton and Hove will be revealed in research that could point to a bright future for the British economy.

A far-reaching study - the result of a £1 million two-year research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) - has unearthed evidence to support a new formula for economic and commercial success.

Based on a detailed analysis of the "cluster" of creative, digital and information technology (CDIT) companies in Brighton and Hove, the study discloses how creativity and digital expertise interact and, in some cases, become "fused" - as well as how and why the city has

become a hub for such companies.

It looks at the role of the city's two universities as well as possible barriers to growth, including access to finance, markets and a workforce with the necessary skills.

The Brighton Fuse research project - which is expected to make headlines nationally and have a significant impact on government policy - has been delivered by Wired Sussex, the universities of Brighton and Sussex, and the National Centre for Universities and Business.

With a large team of researchers collecting, collating and analysing data, stories and experiences including a survey of hundreds of companies - it is one of the most

detailed analyses of any cluster ever undertaken in the United Kingdom.

The findings will be unveiled at Sallis Benney Theatre on Tuesday (October 15) to an audience of nearly 300 people, who will discuss the value and the challenges of creating a "superfused" economy - and how people, businesses and cities might benefit from the findings.

For Brighton and Hove to make the most of the city’s new economic drivers, organisers believe there needs to be radical changes to the way we understand and support the creation of value.

Interim findings were reported to the culture, media and sport select committee of MPs investigating the creative economy.

They showed that CDIT companies strongly benefited from "clustering" together in the same city or locality.

The early findings suggested that geographical proximity still played a pivotal role in the production and innovation activities of companies in the Brighton and Hove CDIT cluster, partly explaining the double digits rate of growth in turnover and employment that respondents reported between 2010 and 2011, in spite of the recession.

Making our streets safer for everyone Jason Kitcat Residents, community groups and campaigners came together recently to celebrate the launch of the new Lewes Road scheme. Before the changes, the majority of those using the road were travelling by bus, bike or foot. However the road didn’t help these thousands of residents travel smoothly, and in many cases not very safely either.

Many city businesses and organisations are on this vital route, including our football club and two universities. Most of them are growing, the only way they can get growing numbers of staff, visitors, students and fans up and down the route is by sustainable transport.

So we’ve just finished part of a scheme to help the majority who travel on the Lewes Road by bus, bike or on foot get about quicker and more safely. The majority of

the cost of the scheme was awarded to us from the government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, which is aimed at creating growth and reducing carbon emissions.

While there will be some initial disruption now that much of the scheme is in place, the better reliability of buses and increased safety of other modes of transport will mean that more residents will

Brighton and Hove Albion reveal plans for a £55million development Brighton and Hove Albion have revealed plans for a £55million development which the club believes will provide a shot in the arm to their on-pitch ambitions and create hundreds of jobs in the city.

Seagulls fans have grown used to hearing the muchrepeated mantra that the Albion need to become self-sustaining amid looming restrictions on how much football clubs can spend.

The advent of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules mean football clubs must kerb their spending to bring it more in line with its income as the sport’s governing bodies attempt to address the problem of spiralling ticket prices and club’s spending themselves to the brink of administration.

Under chief executive Paul Barber, Brighton have been at the forefront of moves away from the historic sporting model of relying on a wealthy benefactor.

And the club yesterday announced plans to further develop the site surrounding its £93milion stadium and elsewhere on nearby land.

A two-pronged project could see a 120-bedroom hotel built next to the 30,750 capacity Amex with a new car park for supporters and accommodation for up to 850 university students on another site close to the BACA Academy.

Representatives from the Albion will meet with Brighton and Hove City Council next week to further discuss the proposals which Mr Barber believes will significantly strengthen the club’s spending power.

He said: “We are constantly looking at ways we can continue to grow the club, its revenue streams and ways to help progress our ambition of the Albion playing at the top level.

“These developments will have a huge impact on the local economy, but will also help the club face the economic challenges of FFP. “They will provide us with additional income streams and having the hotel on site will really benefit our conferencing, banqueting and events business.

“Being able to accommodate

guests overnight is a key factor in this business sector, and this would enable us to significantly strengthen and build our non-matchday events revenue through the stadium.

"Just as we want build our fan base, we also aim to attract new business in this way, because the stronger our revenue streams, the more competitive we can be in the transfer market and ultimately on the pitch.

“The more creative we are and the more we look to build these types of additional revenues, the less we have to keep relying on our loyal supporters.

"Our fans have been incredible in understanding and embracing the challenge of FFP; and as part of our commitment to the fans, we are doing everything we can to maximise extra revenues and keep our cost base as efficient as possible.”

Having already spent almost £100million on the club’s stadium and earmarked a further £30million for a new training complex currently under construction, a further project of this size would strengthen the Seagulls’ investment in the local area.

Martin Perry, who has headed up the team behind the latest plans, says they are something the entire local population should get behind.

“This would be a fantastic boost for the club, the area and the whole city,” he said. “We’re still at an early stage and we have to prove the financial viability of the proposals, but if it goes ahead this plan represents another huge inward investment into the city of Brighton and Hove.

“It will help us develop our revenue streams while helping to reduce the desperate demand on the housing stock in this city.

“The two developments will also create more than 200 jobs and take the club’s investment in Sussex to more than £200million.”

Councillors will discuss the plans on October 17 when they will be asked to give the green light to officers to begin negotiations to lease the land to the club. If an agreement can be reached the Albion will then have to apply to the

local authority for planning permission and prove the scheme is not only economically viable but will have a positive impact on the area.

The UK’s largest digital festival closes for 2013

Brighton Digital Festival, the UK’s largest celebration of digital arts and culture, celebrates the conclusion of its greatest ever month-long programme. With 174 events, averaging out at nearly six unique events every day throughout September, the festival grew by over 60% compared to last year.

This has been the third year of the Brighton Digital Festival, which brings together the city’s diverse digital and arts communities, and whilst it’s too early to accurately feedback on this year’s attendance figures, the festival has hugely exceeded last year’s figure of 25,000 people.

Over 105 organisers were involved in the Brighton Digital Festival 2013, with support from Arts Council England, American Express, RAP Interiors, local media partners Brighton & Hove Independent and co-ordination from Wired Sussex in association with Lighthouse. Visitors from across the globe witnessed everything from internationally renowned conferences and cutting edge art exhibitions to hackathons, live music and story slams. The furthest distance travelled by visitors was from Sydney and New York.

The Festival opened with an internationally acclaimed range of sold-out conferences including, Improving Reality, dConstruct and Reasons to be Creative, all of which packed out The Brighton Dome and offered speakers of the highest caliber. They included Professor of Architecture at Yale University, Keller Easterling, TV personality, commentator and host of BUG at the BFI SouthBank, Adam Buxton and multiple award-winning artist who has collaborated with big brands such as Coca-Cola, Levis and MTV, Jon Burgerman.

Possibly the festival’s busiest event was the Brighton Mini Maker Faire 2013, an interactive fair which explores new inventions and pulled in an impressive 6,000 attendees.

Another festival highlight was the exclusive screening of the Emmy-winning TV series, Black Mirror, followed by an open Q&A with broadcaster, satirist and journalist Charlie Brooker. A oneoff ‘geekbox’ performance by world record holding beat boxer, Shlomo also captured the imagination of sold-out crowds at The Dome.

Open Studios 2013 grew with 21 digital offices opening their doors to the public. Organised by Wired Sussex, the week offered a

selection of recruitment events, presentations and interactive workshops, with many sold-out.

One seminar on freelancing by Crunch Accounting featured a Q&A with Lord Parry Mitchell from the Labour party, in the week of Labour’s Annual Party Conference in Brighton.

Brighton Digital Festival 2013 also offered an impressive art exhibition programme, which ran throughout the entire month and included works from pioneering digital artist William Latham, internationally renowned artists, Simon Wilkinson and Timo Arnall.

There was also the stunning immersive underwater adventure and 3D installation originally commissioned by Kew Gardens, Swimming with Plankton, on show at the Booth Museum.

The sheer range of activities across the 174 festival events is a testament to the energy, openness, talent and strength of the network of independent event organisers who make it all happen. Between them, they created something for

“The Festival provokes collaboration across areas of expertise, work and interest and offers an important platform with which we can all take a moment to consider the transformative effects of ‘digital’ on almost every aspect of our lives,” added Bailey.

The Festival closing party took place at The Blind Tiger on Monday 30 September and closed the festival in style with outstanding performances by Dog In The Snow, Plum and DJ Platypi.

In defence of the Daily Mail Jean Calder Ed Miliband, then Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, came to speak at a meeting in Brighton before the 2010 general election. It was a fairly typical Brighton audience of radical environmental and left activists.

Miliband suggested that Labour supporters need to understand people who don’t share their views. He illustrated this by asking whether there was anyone in the room who read the Daily Mail - obviously believing there’d be none. I remember his amused grin, when I alone put my hand up - and the ripple of laughter from those around me.

It speaks truth to power in a way that is surprisingly rare I read the Mail daily. I started to do so when, as a domesticviolence campaigner, I began to monitor lethal attacks on women.

I swiftly realised that I could better rely on the Mail to record these tragic deaths than any of the apparently “progressive” press. I might not agree with the way homicides were presented, but at least the deaths were recorded - and in most cases with some respect.

As a carer for frail parents with dementia, I grew to appreciate the Mail’s campaign for better elder care in hospitals and care homes. I valued its support for older women experiencing discrimination at work. I admired its willingness to debate religious bigotry and extremism when the left wouldn’t touch these

issues. Despite its obsessive dislike of “political correctness” and its absurd attacks on “feminists”, it is an uncomfortable fact that I’ve found the paper more willing to explore religious and cultural discrimination against women and girls than any other newspaper.

It was one of the first to address the organised sexual abuse of teenage girls and the sexualisation of children.

The Mail is widely read by women on modest income and at least attempts to address the concerns and fears of a group largely ignored by newspapers and politicians.

I read several newspapers each day and don’t believe the Mail is more dishonest than its rivals - all of which, at times misrepresent, dissemble and stay silent when truth should be spoken. The left press remind us (as they are right to do) that the Mail supported Hitler. But the Mail is also the paper that championed Stephen Lawrence and took the risk on its front page of naming five men as his killers. It may be as capable of spewing venom as others, but - at its best - the Mail speaks truth to power in a way that is surprisingly rare amongst the “quality” press.

The Mail should not have attacked Ed Miliband’s father as it did and he was right to defend his reputation. He should, however, be cautious about those who stand alongside him.

support will do him no good still less Lord Sugar’s suggestion of demonstrations outside Paul Dacre’s house.

Ed Miliband would also be well advised to ask why someone with Paul Dacre’s experience attacked, with such ill-judged ferocity and with such ineptitude, that it it enhanced rather than damaged Miliband’s reputation.

It’s not sufficient to suggest it was because “Dacre lost the plot” or there are differences on press regulation or because the Mail is pro-Tory - although of course it is. Something else is in play here.

Paul Dacre presents himself, probably sincerely, as a patriot and man of the people - and his newspaper as a bulwark in the defence of the realm. I suspect he genuinely fears that despite his “one nation” rhetoric, Ed Miliband has no real belief in or commitment to the British nation.

atheist and the son of elite immigrant intellectuals with little historic connection to this country. His life has been as different from most of those he seeks to govern as that of his Eton-educated opponent - whom the Mail also regularly attacks. If either want to achieve a majority, they will have to convince ordinary people that they stand alongside them.

It seems to me that Dacre and Miliband now have a choice.

They can continue taking swipes at each other or, in the interests of democracy, they can lay down their arms for a time and engage in debate on key areas of policy.

It’s deeply frustrating for voters that many political parties and newspapers refuse to engage openly with “sensitive” areas

of policy, such as immigration, religious bigotry, sexual discrimination, and health service standards. One of the strengths of the Mail is that it has no “no-go” areas - and however one views the paper’s politics, this provides potential for open communication.

It’s almost unknown for ordinary people to be able to put questions to a party leader - and to receive considered answers.

I’d like to challenge the Daily Mail to provide an open platform for party leaders, unmoderated and without immediate editorial comment, to do just that: to answer the people’s questions.

It would take courage. It would also be a massive blow struck for democracy. @JeanCalder101

BHASVIC expansion plans knocked back Frank le Duc Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC) has had expansion plans rejected after seeking permission for a new building on its campus in Dyke Road, Hove.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s planningg committee rebuffed the plans for the new building, describing it as “bulky” and deciding it did not fit in with current structures in the area.

The sixth form college has more than 2,100 students, with funding for 2,089 of those. The new building was intended to create 12 extra classrooms – or room for an extra 288 students.

The college had hoped to appoint a contractor next week and start work on the building in December or January, with completion in April 2015.

A report to the Brighton and Hove City Council Planning Committee had previously recommended that councillors

should be “minded to grant” permission subject to a number of conditions.

These included coming up with an amended plan detailing proposed extra bike and car parking spaces as the new building would lead to the loss of 29 parking spaces on Dyke Road.

The new building that was proposed would be three-storeys high. The ground floor would be used as a social space, while the top two floors would house 12 classrooms.

Two neighbours had already objected to the plans along with the Brighton Society, which criticised the design of the proposed building, its height and the building line relative to the other college buildings.

The Brighton Society was also concerned about the proposed materials and the impact of the new building on the existing building and wider street scene. plans had also allowed for a new service area for deliveries and rubbish collections to the north of the College House building in Dyke Road.

Be realistic, dream the impossible The future is digital.

The people of Brighton and Hove recognise this fact probably more than those living almost anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

Since the early days of the internet and what we used to call the worldwide web, our city has been quick to see the opportunities of digital technologies.

Two of the UK’s first seven internet service providers (ISPs) were based here - in the mid1990s, when there were only about 40,000 internet connections in the whole of the country.

At the same time, the city – home for so long to media, technology and creative professionals - benefited from the creation of Wired Sussex, the longtime champion of the local digital community.

It is true that, in the heady days of the dot.com boom, our turn-ofthemillennium self-regard – for example, as “Silicon Beach”, the south coast’s answer to Silicon Valley - may have got a little out of hand; the gap between our selfimage and day-to-day reality may have become too wide.

Less so now.

As the Brighton Fuse project will highlight, Brighton and Hove has a lot to be proud of – certainly a lot more than a few geeks hanging out in the coffee bars of the North Laine. Which was the view of hardline sceptics not so long ago.

Our city is now home to a significant number of substantial companies – and a myriad smaller ones - whose diversity and excellence is obscured rather than explained by the umbrella term of

“digital”.

After all, to a greater or lesser degree, we are all digital now.

For whatever reason (and next week’s Brighton Fuse report will shed invaluable light on this question), we have a head start on other cities in the race to build a high-growth, high-wage economy - based as much on an innovative mix of creativity and collaboration as on programming and products.

But we cannot be complacent.

We have to stay ahead of the curve.

Despite the number of outstanding small and mediumsize companies, we cannot claim to have nurtured anything like the number and scale of enterprises that cities such as San Francisco or Boston have spawned. We have, of course, got to be realistic.

Even so, a significant number of relatively-modest, hightechnology companies can – as has already been proved – create a lot of much-needed, sustainable, recession-proof jobs.

With two universities, a highlyeducated workforce, a tradition of digital innovation, and with an environment attractive to wouldbe entrepreneurs, Brighton and Hove is fertile soil for economic growth and investment.

But it is competing on a world stage – even though its most immediate and direct competition might appear to come from London, with the magic of Silicon Roundabout and beyond sucking in the brightest and the best.

We can never be satisfied until we are truly world class. Therefore, we should never be satisfied.

We have to be realistic. And dream the impossible.

Caroline Lucas: An open letter to my constituents Dear constituent, On August 19, I took part in a peaceful local protest against fracking. I sat down on a path just off the road and at the entrance to a drilling site run by Cuadrilla.

Along with 29 others, I was arrested. I was subsequently charged with obstructing the highway and failing to comply with police conditions imposed on the protest.

I want the people I represent in Brighton Pavilion to be the first to know that I’ll be pleading not guilty to these charges when I appear in court on October 16. I also want to explain what led me to take this action in Balcombe a few months ago.

The campaign to reduce the threat of climate change has been incredibly important to me throughout my political life.

Fracking for shale gas seriously undermines efforts to tackle the climate crisis, which in turn means that our children and grandchildren will inherit a more dangerous world. I know that this is very important to large numbers of my constituents, because so many of you have written to me about the risks that fracking poses to our environment.

The impacts of climate change are already being felt today - in the UK and elsewhere.

Last month saw the publication of the most

comprehensive report on climate science ever produced.

It highlighted the need for urgent action and set out the increasing risks of delay - from more expensive food and political instability overseas to increased drought, flooding and heatwaves.

The latest scientific evidence suggests that as much as 80 per cent of known fossil fuel reserves must remain in the ground if we are to have any chance of avoiding dangerous climate change.

The widespread use of shale gas is quite simply incompatible with the UK’s international commitments to keep global warming below two degrees.

But instead of listening to the scientists, or the huge number of people and organisations who have concerns about fracking, the government appears determined on a reckless and irresponsible new dash for gas.

I’m in the privileged position of being able to make the case in Parliament. I’ve tabled motions, arranged debates, put questions to ministers, and spoken out in the media.

But the government is flying in the face of climate science and ignoring evidence that fracking won’t cut energy bills here in the UK. Ministers refuse to accept proposals, supported by a huge coalition of charities,

for a radically more ambitious programme of energy saving to make all of our homes more energy efficient. This would cut bills, tackle fuel poverty and create hundreds of thousands of quality jobs across the country.

Alongside much better policies to support local community and cooperativelyowned renewable energy schemes, this would mean you are no longer held to ransom by the big six energy companies.

There is a proud tradition of non-violent direct action in this country. In joining the peaceful protest, I wanted to send a clear message to the Government, and to support the people at the proposed fracking site in Balcombe who were standing up to be counted.

It’s likely that there will be a trial next year. I want to reassure you that you will be able to contact me as usual, and I will continue to hold my weekly surgeries, attend local meetings, and represent Brighton Pavilion in parliamentary debates.

Thanks to everyone who’s been in touch to offer their support, and I hope this open letter goes some way towards explaining why I believe in the importance of “speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly” - a phrase from Gandhi that continues to resonate today.

Where are we going to park?

I pick up your newspaper every week and was interested in the various articles relating to parking in last week’s issue [October 4]. In particular I was interested in the article relating to the council ‘clamping down on pavement parking.’ I live towards the Lewes Road end of Elm Grove and park on the pavement, along with my neighbours, because there simply is nowhere else to park. All of the side roads are full to the brim with parked cars, and a lack of parking bays means the number of car owning residents is severely disproportionate to the number

of spaces available.

I can appreciate it may be a safety risk to pedestrians and motorists but I would say a more sensible answer would be to provide more parking bays rather than start issuing parking tickets?

I commute to Lewes every day so have no alternative but to use a car to get to work.

As has been suggested with other recently proposed schemes, let’s have a public consultation on this matter and establish a mutually beneficial solution.

Let’s get on with something useful!

Mike Holland So that’s it, then! They have cracked it. Our administration has now alienated just about every sector of society, with the exception of a few nutters who actually believe we can banish motor vehicles from our city.

All we have to do now is go on holiday for 19 months and, when we come back, it will all be over.

No more grinning idiots telling us that if we really must make a car journey, we should first think about whether it is really necessary and whether we have considered some other mode of transport.

No more will we be made to feel as though some punitive action is about to be taken because we have dared to drive to the supermarket.

I personally can’t wait to see the rear-end of this bunch of useless individuals. In the meantime, however, I have thought of a few things that would be beneficial for our city and they could crack on

with now while waiting to exit stage left.

I am 100% behind reducing emissions, but let’s do so in a joined-up adult manner and not act like a bunch of hormonal teenagers away from their parents for the first time.

If we are serious about tackling emissions, it is imperative we stop all this idiotic nonsense about parkand-ride being a non-starter. We must have proper park-and-ride facilities and they must be wellserved with buses, while passengers can wait undercover in comfort for the next transport to arrive. There must also be adequate restroom facilities. People cannot be expected to wait around at park-and-ride

We need to pedestrianise our city centre totally sites while crossing their legs and praying for a bus to arrive.

We need to pedestrianise our city centre totally. Yes, I am talking about Queen’s Road up as far as far as Gloucester Road, North Street in it’s entirety, Western Road as

far Montpelier Road and, yes, of course, East Street - plus numerous others. Access by motor vehicle should simply be for those who can demonstrate they have a parking space or garage. Deliveries should be before 10am or after 4pm. There should be no taxis, no buses and, yes, it should apply to all wheels, ie definitely no cycling. What an absolutely wonderful open-aircultured, wheel-free city centre we would have.

While we are at it, let’s have a dog-free, Big-issue-free, beggar-free city centre. Let’s have the whole area jet-washed regularly and some properly-maintained floral displays.

My goodness even Hastings has better town-centre floral displays than we do.

Let’s stop penalising the motorist who bring in the lifeblood to our city while concentrating on working to cut emissions. Let’s stop this lunatic idea that all roads should be 20mph. Of course, we all know that many of the back streets should be 20mph - but not blanket coverage.

That is just plain stupidity.

Instead, let’s work to alleviate bottlenecks - which surely must be achievable. Please do not tell me that creating bottlenecks such

All that happened is that anyone heading to east Brighton has now diverted their journey to the Falmer-Woodingdean Road. This causes massive tailbacks from the Woodingdean lights in both directions, adds 10 minutes to your journey at best, and causes huge unnecessary emissions. The traffic system at that junction is a shambles and appears to have been dreamed up by a 15-year-old on work-experience.

There are real problems in our city now, most of which have been

caused by sheer incompetence and lack of experience.

We should be employing a competent firm of independent traffic consultants to work alongside councillors, business and tourism leaders. The brief should be to improve air quality, improve travel times, and encourage tourist trade to our city.

We are currently sending out totally the wrong message and our current administration appear too arrogant to accept the fact. It looks set to get worse before it gets any better, unfortunately. @RealMikeHolland

Unlawful parking in Elm Grove

Drivers who park on the pavements and verges in Elm Grove in Brighton risk receiving a parking ticket after councillors voted for a clampdown.

Sussex Police and Brighton and Hove City Council are expected to organise a “joint initiative” to tackle “parking contraventions, obstructions and other nuisances on the public highway”.

Green councillors and two Conservatives voted in favour of the crackdown in the street leading up to Brighton General Hospital at the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee this week.

Labour members tried to persuade the committee to put off enforcement for 12 months to give the community a chance to come up with a solution to the area’s parking problems.

A previous proposal to create a controlled parking zone in Hanover and Elm Grove proved deeply unpopular and was thrown out.

More recent plans to create free parking bays and landscaping – making it harder to park on the verges and pavements – were also rejected during a consultation.

Some drivers currently block pavements making it hard or impossible for people in wheelchairs or parents with buggies to get past.

Where there are double yellow lines on the road, those parked on the pavement face the prospect of

a parking ticket. Likewise, where there is an obstruction.

About 70 cars are likely to be displaced by enforcement although many of the neighbouring streets are narrow, cramped and overcrowded with cars and vans.

Council official Owen McElroy told committee members: “There is no offence of parking on the footway, but if it’s causing an obstruction or a person is witnessed driving on the footway or the pavement, it is an offence and a matter for the police.

“If a vehicle that is parked on the footway, but not behind double yellow lines, nothing can be done.

“The yellow lines were put down in the 1980s and they were reviewed last year. The reason they were put down was to make junctions safe.”

Councillor Emma Daniel, who recently won the by-election in the ward for Labour, asked the committee to hold off for 12 months.

She said: “Please give this community a chance to come up with a scheme that the community supports and will be self-enforcing.

Councillor Christopher Hawtree said: “Previous administrations have not dealt with this so we’re having to deal with it. This is about safety. This is also about trying to make Elm Grove better. We’re not doing it in a draconian way.”

Councillor Gill Mitchell said:

“There’s a whole constituency here which is being ignored: the residents of Elm Grove and the side streets.

“Residents were asked if they wanted a residents' parking zone and the ward councillors campaigned against it and so did the then Green candidate in the general election.

“Residents were then told there was going to be immediate enforcement.”

She criticised that approach, but added: “We don’t condone the illegal parking practices in Elm Grove. But the council has to enforce parking consistently across the city.”

Councillor Dee Simson said: “I can’t see this being a long-term solution, if you haven’t got the buyin of the community.”

Committee chairman Councillor Pete West, a Green, said: “We don’t have to give officers permission to enforce the law, but we are giving our consent to a package with the police.

“We have given ample opportunity for grassroot schemes.

This whole proposal came out of consultations with the community.

“We can continue to have dialogue with the community.

Meanwhile we have a responsibility for road safety and legality.

“What would be extremely welcome coming from the community is a proposal and evidence of support for their proposal.

Dad… you are a political issue!

So the Party Conferences have come and gone and the dominant story seems to be Ed Millband squaring up to The Daily Mail in defence of his dad.

As I walked through Preston Park last weekend, it was one of those warm autumn days you treasure cause you know they are few and far between.Not only did the weather put a spring in my step but I was struck by the number of dads who were out enjoying quality time with their kids – in fact there were few women to be seen. The park was alive with the sound of children enjoying themselves; there were dads playing football, picnicking, chasing their kids but also sitting quietly chatting.

In the world of family separation there is a myth that to be a separated dad at weekends means sad trips to McDonalds, to be a separated dad is to play second fiddle to mum and muddle through as best you can ….keep smiling through the anxiety.

The dads I saw in Preston Park seemed a million miles from such stereotypes; of course there was no telling who was a separated dad and who wasn’t …but given that over half of all

marriages end in divorce it was safe to assume many were dads not living with their children full time.

It is no surprise to see Ed Milliband defending his father this week, Labour have stated they want to be the country’s most father-friendly political party. The Conservatives on the other hand have long dominated the political debate with their stereotype of a feckless underclass of absent fathers.

As a collaborative family lawyer and mediator I work with dads and mums. I want to see dads involved. Most of the dads I see know just how important it is to have an ongoing relationship with their children, not just be a weekend dad.

Politicians of all colours are becoming less prescriptive about what an ‘ideal family’ should be delivering policies designed to support women but many of these just re-enforce women’s role as carers and keeps fathers on the margins. Many policies are particularly problematic for separated fathers who are identified as the secondary parent Gender equality for both men and women –

is still not an easy story to sell.

But while the involvement of dads can reduce inequality, the unequal way we treat parents makes it harder for fathers to be involved particularly after separation.

In my work with separating couples I help clients to see the importance of trying to share parenting. If couples can put their differences aside and are fully committed to the children having ‘both’ parents in their lives it can work. It takes time and resilience but you only have to take a walk through any of our lovely parks on an autumn day and see the expressions on both children and dads face to know it is more than worth it.

A charity shop had an unusual item up for grabs in amongst the second hand books and porcelain dogs. Spiral Cabin in Lewes Road was given a coffin by a local theatre company after it was no longer needed as a prop. It is available to buy for £155.

The hugely-popular seasonal outdoor ice rink will be back outside the Royal Pavilion from November 9. The attraction proved a hit last season and will be open to skaters until January 19 2014. Green MP Caroline Lucas this week praised its eco-friendly credentials.

Different departments at Brighton and Hove City Council have taken to the local authority’s Twitter account this week to provide followers with a glimpse into the range of work being done by town hall staff. The council boasts more than 15,000 followers on its @BrightonHoveCC account.

Commuters were told this week that rail fares will not go up by more than 6.1 per cent next year. The Coalition Government introduced the cap in a bid to ease the financial burden on workers who rely on trains to ferry them to and from work.

A hotel in The Lanes conservation area was named the ninth best in a national newspaper’s top 100. Hotel Du Vin was celebrating this week after it featured in The Times’ list of the country’s best seaside hotels.

Brighton and Hove City Council announced this week that 73% of homeless applications decisions are made within a month of being received. Locals who are, or are facing being homeless, can submit details to the authority which then decides what support they are entitled to.

Sally Gunnell MBE to lead the cheering as Withdean opens upgraded athletics track Olympic 400m hurdles champion Sally Gunnell MBE will be leading the cheers as amateur athletes take to the brand new athletics track at Withdean Sports Complex. To mark the event, Withdean is inviting families to enjoy an afternoon of fun and activity on Saturday 26 October from 12:3015:00.

The official opening will take place at 13:00 when Mayor Denise Cobb, Brighton & Hove City Councillors and Jon Horne of Sport England join Sally Gunnell to kick off the festivities.

The Freedom Leisure operated centre has laid on a jam-packed afternoon of free track races and field activities including a toddler and parent race, 400 metre races for 8-14 year olds, a one mile event for the whole family and howler throwing lessons. In addition, there will be opportunities to win some great prizes on the day, such as three months free Freedom Leisure membership for the whole family worth £250.

“The new track is top quality

and a great addition to the range of sporting facilities we have at Withdean Sports Complex”, says Ross Philipson, Freedom Leisure centre manager. “It’s set to be an enjoyable event for the whole family and all participants will be rewarded with medals and certificates. I have no doubt the youngsters – and adults for that matter - will be inspired by Sally Gunnell attending and cheering them on.”

The athletics track has been updated as part of a larger redevelopment and extension programme at Withdean Sports Complex, in which Brighton & Hove City Council has invested £2.6 million.

Councillor Geoffrey Bowden said; “I am immensely proud that the running track at Withdean stadium is now complete and I’m sure this will be a track upon which to watch future stars train, it also shows our commitment to the future of local athletics.”

Charity fashion show raises over £5,000

The Orphans International Charity Fashion Show was held on Sunday 6th October at MyHotel Brighton.

The fashion show featured input from a number of key local stakeholders in the fashion industry, in addition to a number of designers from London and further afar; featuring Mottoo (12 Duke Street and 19 Brighton Square, Brighton), Kezia Range, Run JRL , Peter Twiss, Peggs and Son (39 Duke Street, Brighton), Jenna Shahria, Curve Couture, Sheer Elegance, Illustrated People (91 Brick Lane, London), Milla

Grace, RawVault, Pocket London and Renaissance Couture.

The event was a huge success, raising over £5,000 for the charity and providing an impressive debut event for the organisers, Peach Projects and its seventeen year old founding director, Jade Pawsey. The event was managed by both Peach Projects and Harvey Sisya, with hair Stylists provided

by Mark Woolley (Electric) and Make Up by Victoria Reeve. Head Photographer for the event was Malcom Tam and the event DJ was Oli P. Entertainment in the interval

featured a performance from renowned local artist and nominee for the 2013 MOBO awards, Elli Ingram.

Ed Allison-Wright, involved in negotiating the use of the venue for the event, commented: “This event goes to show how much more a hotel can be and provide, than just a place to stay – the show was a great example of local talented individuals working together with local businesses, all for a worthy cause. We should encourage more of these initiatives to come forward”.

From mid-November, shoppers in Hove and Portslade should be on the look out for the “Christmas Shopping Challenge” posters in the windows of their independent retailers. Shoppers can pick up a free Christmas Shopping Challenge Tree map from participating retailers and other outlets. The challenge is to collect 10 different stamps from retailers (no purchase necessary) and the completed map will then be entered into a free Prize Draw. The diversity of

All of these are further underscored with witty,

ever-present narration and the occasional fourth-wallbreaking wink to the camera, both of which create complicity with the audience.

Baird has also assembled a terrific supporting cast: Sessions is particularly funny as Bruce’s blustering, oblivious boss, while Marsan is wonderful as Bladesey (his dancing scenes in Hamburg are riotously funny) and there’s strong work from Shirley Henderson (as Bladesey’s wife, who keeps getting obscene phonecalls from Bruce), Jim Broadbent (as a deranged psychiatrist in Bruce’s fantasy sequences) and Jamie Bell as Ray, who rather naively views Bruce as a mentor figure.

The Great The script is gloriously sleazy throughout and Baird directs with a manic energy that perfectly illustrates Bruce’s drug-fuelled behaviour, heightened by Mark Eckersley’s whip-smart editing and Matthew Jensen’s garish, hallucinatory cinematography – the result of this breakneck pace is that you’re constantly bracing yourself for the inevitable crash, which creates an extremely tense atmosphere even as you’re enjoying the ride. In addition, the film is packed with bizarre, off-thewall touches (such as the various animal masks that crop up) that add to the unsettling nature of the film.

Worth seeing?

Filth is an enjoyable, darkly funny drama that’s also surprisingly moving, thanks to a superbly written script, an assured directorial tone and a powerhouse of a central performance from James McAvoy. Highly recommended, though you may need a shower afterwards.

Pizzaface – an authentic Italian experience

What comes to mind when you think of takeaway pizza? Large value meal deals served with a sly marketing and tons of processed calories? Or do you sway toward authentic Italian style pizzas baked in a stone based oven? If it’s the latter, you’ve clearly ordered from Pizzaface before.

Starting life in 2009 by local duo Bertie and Woody who, without much prior experience, decided to put their chef and graphic design backgrounds to the test and setup a pizza business.

With much hard work and dedication, they opened up shop at a rundown pizzeria in Kemptown.

Thus, Pizzaface was born.

I chatted with Mavis, who joined the team a year after they opened. She’d known Bertie and Woody since the University days and heads up the recruitment and HR side of things as well as “ensures staff are at their happiest” which was refreshing

to hear.

Upon asking her if Bertie and Woody thought twice about opening a pizza takeaway in the economic climate of 2009, she replied: “if you’re going to do something, you do it in a decline, banks are keen to lend and we took the chance”.

The risk clearly paid off. Earlier this month Pizzaface opened their second branch in Hove and now serve the Southwick, Portslade and Hangleton sides of town.

“We started off with 5 pizzas on the menu” Mavis says with a giggle, clearly in awe of the expansion that Pizzaface has seen.

“All our dough and bases are made by hand each evening with chefs working into the night to make sure we are ready for the following day.” Pizzaface use Sardinian ‘00’ flour to ensure authenticity and each pizza is handmade to order, before being baked in a stone-oven. “We tried out a few ovens but wanted to keep things traditional” Mavis said.

The team source as much of their produce as locally as possible and reach out to Italy for their salami and other meats to add a real Italian element to their pizzas. The Cheese Man, Infinity

Foods and C H Mears are a few of the suppliers Pizzaface work with. They also have a fantastic relationship with ice cream shop Boho Geleto whom they’ve been friendly with since the early days.

Supporting local businesses and working closely with the community is clearly something that Pizzaface aim toward with expansion into pizza workshops, festivals and ideas around street trading in the works.

Pizzaface have many pizzas for you to choose from and also are highly commended for their vegan range, with special pizzas available to order every Monday and Tuesday for the dairy/meat free amongst us. Each vegan pizza is named after a famous vegan – will you be having The Moby or The Bill Clinton this evening, sir?

After much deliberation, I decided to opt for the Cuca pizza which was topped with mozzarella, smoked mozzarella, oyster and shitake mushrooms, caramelised onions, rosemary and Napoli salami. Not being content with a whole pizza, I also had the Garlic Bread with Goats Cheese and a side pot of olives.

Order taken at 18.40. Order in hand by 19.05. Great stuff from their newly opened Hove branch!

I loved the simple presentation and unwrapping the garlic bread

filled the house with a warm, dough smell - just like Mama used to make!

Goats cheese on the bronzed round slice of garlic infused bread gave a salty feel to the side dish and paired with the sweetness of garlic, it was a beautiful combination.

I’d recommend the pot of olives to nibble on too and the rosemary infused olive oil that black and green olives swam in was ideal for dipping in tears of garlic bread.

The pizza was large, warm all the way through and smelt delicious. The huge round slabs of salami adorned the stone baked slices of mozzarella slathered goodness and gave a great visual treat to my Monday dinner.

Tucking into a slippery slice I could instantly taste each topping and element that made the Cuca so special. The collection of mushrooms held their own against the two types of mozzarella cheese, with the caramelised onions adding a touch of sweetness against the

smokeyness and spicy salami.

Recently winning a Silver Award in the Brighton and Hove Foodie Awards for ‘Best Takeaway’ will Pizzaface be resting on their laurels? “We’re never sitting back, we’re always looking to up our game” Mavis said proudly.

I expect big things still to come from Pizzaface and am assured that the high quality ingredients, authentic stone baked bases and love from the team will continue.

A timeless coffee shop; Mr Wolfe

Setback from the hustle and bustle of Western Road in the gorgeous Montpelier district stands Mr Wolfe, a timeless coffee shop dripping with Monmouth Organic coffee and

oozing delectable homemade cakes.

Venturing there after a long day at the office, I entered a laid back, dream like world of chalk boards, chill-out music and chocolate cake. Decorated in a charcoal grey and aching of low lighting and wooden benches, Mr Wolfe clearly has an eye for interiors.

A husband and wife venture that launched in February 2012, Mr Wolfe is open seven days a week serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and of course, coffee.

Monmouth is a blend that

includes Brazilian and Bolivan beans, freshly ground for your drinking pleasure. The coffee is also very reasonably priced and my smooth flat white was a snip at £2.40.

We all know that it is afternoon blasphemy to order coffee without cake and I couldn’t resist the Chocolate Vanilla and Fig Jam bake alongside my afternoon pick me up. The cake was almost fudge-like and the buttercream holding the layers together was impeccably smooth. Paired with the sweetness of the Fig Jam,

the cake was sublime. Hats off to the baker!

Stopping by for a light lunch is also an option as Mr Wolfe serve sandwiches, pies and the occasional Autumnal soup. Think hearty flavours, sourdough bread and robust fillings. Delicious.

Mr Wolfe is worlds apart from the busier chain coffee shops that lay a mere road away.

Why not venture slightly out of your way to experience tranquillity, a great brew, laid back atmosphere and wonderful cake.

Onesies and leopard print - what men hate about womens’ fashion ONESIES, leopard print and oversized sunglasses have emerged as the fashion fads men hate to see on women. A detailed study of 1,000 men and 1,000 women found men also dislike Ugg boots, hooker heels, jumpsuits and big earrings.

Men also seem to be in favour of the natural look, as cheap hair extensions, cheek piercings, heavily applied make-up and dip-dyed hair were all voted as complete no-no’s.

Low-hanging jeans, baseball caps balancing on the back of the head and ankle skimmers came top of the list of things women dislike about men’s fashion sense.

In addition, women find it a turn-off if they see men wearing salmon pink jeans, socks with sandals, or heeled shoes.

And men are advised to leave the fake tan, earrings and girly scarves at home.

Brix Smith-Start, spokeswoman and judge for new TLC TV series Shopaholic Showdown which commissioned the research, said: ”As this survey demonstrates, first impressions really do count. ”Men in a beautifully cut suit are bound to make a good impression – Jude Law epitomises chic style and Harry Styles style is current and modern and clearly adored by millions of women. ”No, no’s would be three quarter-length trousers on men, it’s

a style that will never work. ”Equally tracksuits with brand names scrawled across them are a heinous crime against fashion.”

The study shows women are far more likely to judge the opposite sex by the clothes he has on – 64% of women make judgements compared to 48% of men.

And women are also less likely to accept a date if the suitor is badly dressed – only 47% would accept a date with someone who has bad fashion sense – compared to a less fussy 55% of men.

However, men are marginally more likely to let fashion get in the way of a good relationship, as 11% have dumped a girl just because they couldn’t stand the way she dressed, compared to 9% of women.

But this might be because women are more likely to try and change the way a partner dresses by shopping for them, and gradually changing their wardrobe.

Nearly half of women have tried to ‘educate’ their fella in the fashion stakes by advising him on his appearance.

Men and women agreed when it comes to who has more style women have better knowledge and understanding of what makes a ‘good look’.

And men are also more likely to get it wrong when making decisions about their outfit.

When it comes to the ultimate style icons, women would most like their man to dress the same as David Beckham, or failing that, George Clooney.

While men would be more than happy to date someone who dressed like Holly Willoughby, or Kate Middleton.

Brix Smith-Start for Shopaholic Showdown added: ”Women like Tilda Swinton always get it right – she is so bold when it comes to clothes and style. ”Holly Willoughby’s style is much more conventional so you can see why men love her look.”

Insurance premium excesses put Brits off claiming OVER THE last three years, 7.4 million Brits voluntarily increased the excess on a car or home insurance policy when purchasing the cover, in order to lower their premium, according to research from Sainsbury's Bank. However, 21% of those subsequently involved in an incident hadn't considered the implications in terms of the additional outlay, at the claim stage.

Most insurance policies will specify a standard excess which is the minimum amount to be paid in the event of a claim. It is now common place for insurers to also offer the option of adding a voluntary excess. This means new policyholders can choose to add an additional excess on top of their compulsory excess, increasing the amount that they will need to pay when making a claim. Opting to add a voluntary excess can have a favourable impact on the policy's premium and can make a significant difference to monthly premium payments.

The supermarket bank's research findings reveal that, over the past three years, 15% of adults have voluntarily increased the excess on their car or home

insurance policies in order to reduce the premium, increasing their excess by an average of £327.

Sainsbury's Bank is encouraging motorists and homeowners to fully consider voluntary excess options as part of the whole picture. It's a good idea to look into whether upping the excess will make a valuable enough saving on a premium and, if it does, is the motorist / homeowner comfortable with the additional outlay, should they need to make a claim on their insurance policy?

Ben Tyte, Head of Insurances at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "Insurance is there to assist you when you need it most. If you're thinking about selecting a higher excess to reduce your monthly premium, be sure that this won't cause you any financial difficulty when it comes to making a claim. For example, if you later feel that you can't justify a claim in relation to the excess, this could be an unnecessarily stressful and expensive experience.

We'd encourage homeowners and motorists to think carefully about the excess they select on their policies, as well as ensuring they choose good quality cover."

13% of car and home insurance

policy holders who voluntarily increased the excess on their policies have suffered an accident or damage to their car or home that they could claim for under the terms of their policy. However, one in three of these people (35%) said it wasn't worth making the claim as they had raised the excess too much.

Nearly four in 10 of those who suffered an incident (38%) made a claim but had to use their savings to cover the excess, 16% had to use their credit card to pay the excess and 16% had to borrow money from

a friend or relative to do so.

Ben added: "Those considering raising their excess should also consider other ways to reduce their insurance premium, for example, investing extra time in shopping around for the best cover at the most competitive price and looking for discounts and benefits."

New Sainsbury's car insurance customers could benefit from prices as little as £224 and Sainsbury's customers with a Nectar card could also receive double Nectar points on their Sainsbury's shopping and fuel for two years. Offer ends 9th

New home insurance customers could benefit from a discount of up to 50% if they have been claim free for five years and those customers with a Nectar card will also receive an additional discount of up to 15% on their premium. Customers purchasing combined buildings and contents cover directly from Sainsbury's Bank (over the phone or online) also receive 5,000 Nectar points.

Your car, your responsibility WE ALL take responsibility for the food and drink we put in our bodies, but a new study has shown that motorists shy away from taking charge of which oil goes into their car’s engine.

Comprehensive new research of 1,000 UK drivers conducted on behalf of Mobil 1 has revealed that a worrying 96% say they either don’t care which oil is used in their car or simply go with what a mechanic recommends. More worrying still, even if they did care about this, 65% of respondents said they wouldn’t know which oil viscosity grade was recommended by their vehicle’s manufacturer anyway. An even larger percentage (69%) were ignorant as to which brand is recommended by their car’s maker.

Choosing the right engine oil for your vehicle is vital in terms of the level of protection on offer.

Conventional oil is simply refined crude oil. Synthetic oil, however, is not only refined, but it is also distilled and purified. This helps to provide better protection against wear, high heat, cold weather and sludge build-up. Ultimately, this process helps your car’s engine run better for longer.

Tim Shallcross, Head of Technical Policy at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), said: “Engine oil works in the harshest of conditions. It must keep lubricating, cooling and cleaning your engine while being constantly hammered by huge pressures and exposed to temperatures ranging from the sub zero of a midwinter cold start to the searing heat of the combustion chamber.

Manufacturers know the demands placed on the oil and that is why they are so specific in the grade and quality they recommend.”

Further, the research conducted as part of the Mobil 1 survey found that more than a third of drivers (36.2%) have no knowledge of the difference between mineral and synthetic engine oils.

Oscar needs time - and a fit squad - before being judged It would be fair to say there has been far more attention on the Albion’s former manager than its current head coach – with Gus Poyet landing the Sunderland job and the Seagulls without a fixture to prepare for.

Much has been made in the press of Poyet’s undeniable success in taking the Albion from the clutches of relegation in League Two to within two games from the Premier League, but what of his successor’s start to life on the south coast?

Oscar Garcia hasn’t enjoyed the best of beginnings at The Amex. The one-time Barcelona youth coach has seen his squad hamstrung by injuries to key players and has had to utilise a clutch of younger prospects to plug the gaps left by the club’s bigger names.

Two-time player of the year Liam Bridcutt has made just one appearance, chief goal-grabber Leo Ulloa missed three games through suspension before fracturing a bone in his foot while recordsigning Craig Mackail-Smith has seen his recovery from long-term injury derailed.

Equally important though has been the absence of Brighton’s main creative influence Andrea Orlandi who topped the Seagulls assists chart last term with 11 set-ups. So far he has appeared in just two of Oscar’s 11 league games at the helm and the Albion have struggled to open up opposition defences without their talented midfield playmaker.
