HUNDREDS OF REFUSE WORKERS in Brighton and Hove have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in a long-running row over pay with the council. Members of the GMB union at Brighton and Hove City Council will walk out from 14-20 June after backing stoppages by 96%, with further strikes planned. An indefinite work to rule will begin at the same time.
While our members do not take strike action lightly, they have no option but to defend themselves from these savage cuts GMB has accused the local authority of preparing an illegal strike-breaking operation using agency staff to empty bins if industrial action takes place. The union said its members, who work in refuse, recycling and street cleaning, face cuts of up to £4,000 a year under plans to revise pay and conditions at the local authority. Rubbish piled up last month when workers walked out on an unofficial strike for two days after the council began a 90-day consultation about proposed changes to overtime rates and other allowances. Local MP told to cover up during Commons debate GREEN MP CAROLINE LUCAS has been told to cover up a T-shirt displaying the slogan "No More Page Three" in large lettering during a Commons debate. She wore the white T-shirt at the start of a debate on media sexism. Chairman of the session, Labour's Jimmy Hood, interrupted her and told her to "put her jacket back on" and comply with Westminster's dress code. Ms Lucas picked up a copy of The Sun and waved Page Three, but said she would comply with the ruling. She added: "It does strike me as a certain irony that this T-shirt is regarded as an inappropriate thing to be wearing in this House, whereas apparently it is appropriate for this kind of newspaper to be available to buy in eight different outlets on the Palace of Westminster estate." During the debate, the MP for Brighton Pavilion argued The Sun newspaper's Page Three, which features topless models, should be consigned to the "rubbish bin where it belongs". She expressed her support for the No More

Page Three campaign and said the content of the page was not acceptable in a family newspaper said to be seen by 7.5m people each day. Earlier this year, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who owns The Sun, hinted on Twitter that Page Three may be replaced with a "halfway house" of "glamorous fashionistas". Ms Lucas said: "To date, public pressure has secured the most public sign from The
Sun's proprietor that the paper might scrap Page Three. But the clock is ticking and we still have not seen any concrete action. "So if Page Three still hasn't been removed from The Sun by the end of this year, I think we should be asking the government to step in and legislate." She also called for The Sun to be removed from sale in Parliament until it dropped the photo feature.
Continued from page 1 Negotiations started after a decision in January by the council’s Policy and Resources Committee to ask officials to sort out disparities in allowances across the council. Council leader Councillor Jason Kitcat said that between 400 and 500 staff would lose out under the proposed changes while a similar number would be better off. Those losing out include almost all the CityClean staff. Everyone who stands to lose out has been offered compensation equal to three years’ worth of losses. Penny Thompson, Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “I am disappointed that we are now facing formal strike action for seven days over our proposals to modernise our allowances system. We will continue to meet with our unions to encourage discussion to avoid this action. I am pleased that GMB has now agreed to attend a meeting. We are continuing to do everything we can to find an agreed settlement. This has never been about savings nor specifically Cityclean. While some staff will gain from our proposals, unfortunately some will see a reduction in their allowances, so we have offered compensation in these cases.”
Dramatic rescue after roof collapse
FREE 'Stop Smoking Easily' Ebook Launch
FIREFIGHTERS rescued a woman who was trapped in a house in Brighton after the roof collapsed. Other tenants were also inside but managed to escape from the Victorian property in Stanford Avenue. It is "remarkable" that nobody was seriously injured or killed when the roof collapsed, firefighters have said. Witnesses said they heard a loud bang as the roof of the building, which has been converted into nine flats, caved in at about 21:45 BST on Monday (10 June). An investigation into the cause of the collapse has started. Neighbour Liza Groves said: "We could see that the roof had all sort of collapsed and was coming forward, but the lady was looking out of her window, obviously couldn't see above, and I really don't think she realised just how much danger she was in."
CAROL ADAMS of Brighton And Hove Stop Smoking is delighted and excited to announce the launch of her new book 'Stop Smoking Easily Without Cravings In 60 Minutes'. After successfully treating thousands of smokers over an eight year period Carol thought it was time to publish her account about the amazing effects of Bioresonance therapy. Carol goes on to explain. “Many people still have not heard of Bioresonance therapy and they therefore don’t know how the therapy works, how successful it is or more importantly how easy it is to stop. So, I decided to spread the word by launching a free Ebook which is available direct from me via email or through Amazons Kindle Bookstore. I had this treatment myself eight years ago after seeing an article on Richard and Judy Show and again on BBC News explaining how it worked. I stopped after just one treatment and have since become a fully qualified therapist and now run clinics across the UK and also in Spain. Bioresonance is an alternative therapy that is completely safe and harmless. It has amazing results because it actually removes the nicotine addiction from
Richard Fowler, from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "If you look at the pictures of the scene, I think it's remarkable that no one was seriously injured or killed in this incident." Brighton and Hove City Council said it was working with the landlord to ensure the safety of the building.

Mauricio Taricco's suspension lifted BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION assistant boss Mauricio Taricco has been cleared to return to his job by the club. The 40-year-old was suspended last month along with manager Gus Poyet and first-team coach Charlie Oatway. The Seagulls confirmed in a statement on the club website that "internal processes" concerning Poyet and Oatway were still ongoing. It said: "The club looks forward to Mauricio's return to work following his scheduled annual leave." Poyet, Oatway and Taricco were suspended by Brighton in the wake of the play-off semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace. The club have been considering, among other issues, whether Poyet breached his contract with comments to journalists following the match. "The club's internal processes concerning Gus Poyet and Charlie Oatway are on-going," the statement continued. "As such, the club is not able to make any further comment on this matter at this time." Former Tottenham and Ipswich left-back Taricco joined the Championship club in November 2009 when Poyet was appointed as manager.

POLICE HAVE PUBLISHED a CCTV image of a man they want to interview about a fire in Portland Road, Hove in the very early hours of Saturday 25 May. Firefighters arrived at the scene at around 1.30am and quickly extinguished the fire which is believed to have been deliberately started at the back of an empty premises. The fire caused minimal damage to a wall and no one was injured. Detectives have obtained CCTV from the nearby Texaco Garage, Kingsway, Hove, taken at 12.55am, 25 May. A man parked in a road nearby, came in and first asked for lighter fluid, but then a bought petrol container and filled it up. A few minutes later, the fire was reported at the back of the disused premises in Portland Road, near the junction with St Helier Avenue, where bins are kept and there are a number of garages. The suspect is described as white, about 30, 5' 9", with dark brown medium length hair, and stubble. He was wearing a green jacket, blue jeans, a blue and white large
checked shirt, and a dark grey baseball cap. There is no description of the car he was driving. Detective Constable Paul Clements said: "The motive for this incident is not clear but if, as we believe, a full can of petrol was involved, then there was obvious potential for the fire to have been much more serious. If you recognise this man, or if you were in the area that night and saw anything suspicious, please call us on 101 quoting serial 0108 of 25/5. You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101 quoting serial 0150 of 7/6. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
Police seek witnesses to Brighton flat fire POLICE ARE SEEKING WITNESSES after a fire at a flat in Stonehurst Court, Down Terrace, Brighton, to which the fire service were called shortly before 1.15am on Thursday 6 June. The 67-year old sole resident of the flat was unhurt but his dog had been affected by smoke inhalation and was revived at the scene by firefighters using oxygen. The fire is being treated as suspicious, and a man was reported to have been seen leaving the scene before the arrival of emergency services. Detective Constable Paul Hitchcock said:
"From our investigation so far it is apparent that there were several people walking in Downs Terrace immediately before the fire started. If you were in the area at that time, or if you have any other information, please all us on 101 quoting serial 0054 of 6/6. You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111." A 24-year old local man was arrested on Tuesday 11 June on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, and theft of a wallet from the flat, and is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.

Council seek residents views RESIDENTS in Woodingdean and Ovingdean are invited to give their views on proposed changes to the 52 bus route which serves the area. Brighton & Hove City Council has been listening to residents, many of whom say they would like a more direct route to take them nearer to the hospital, city centre or train station. The options are to provide peak time buses to the city centre with two continuing to the station, with no buses to the Marina at peak times; all journeys provided to the city centre, with some peak

time buses also continuing to the station which would mean services every 90 minutes instead of every hour and not serving the Marina in the morning peak; or no change. In the second half of this month you can also give views on the bus to an inspector who will be travelling on some of the 52 buses. Or you can take part online by visiting www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/52bus Closing date for comments is 4 July. Any changes in the timetable would take place from mid-September.

Brighton pub to be demolished 100 mile charity challenge A BRIGHTON PUB is due to be demolished in the coming weeks. The Cobbler’s Thumb on the corner of New England Road and New England Street, is finally to be demolished after years of structural neglect. The building, which is owned by Brighton and Hove City Council, was declared structurally unsafe. The demolition is planned for July with the work completed in early August. The council is considering redeveloping the site which is next to an old scrapyard, Richardson’s Yard, where Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) is to use shipping containers as housing.

A GROUP OF COLLEAGUES walked over 100 miles across the South Downs Way to raise money for a local children’s charity. Mark Simmons, Chris North, Sam Fenn and Verity Graham who work at various Natwest branches in and around Brighton, raised £5,015 for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity – the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) and a vital supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU). The group began their challenge on Friday 7 June in Winchester and walked 112 miles across the South Downs to be greeted by friends and family at the Belgian Café on Eastbourne seafront on Monday 10 June, completing their challenge in just four days.
The money raised will enable Rockinghorse to continue supporting sick children and babies in Sussex by providing much-needed life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment for the Alex and TMBU. Verity Graham from Natwest in Castle Square, Brighton, said: “We took on the challenge of the South Downs walk because we wanted to support the great work Rockinghorse Children’s Charity do and we were up for a challenge!” Analiese Doctrove, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Rockinghorse, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to the team from Natwest for taking on the 100 mile challenge and raising over £5,000 to help sick children in Sussex.”
Green Party make their intentions clear regarding binman strikes SENIOR MEMBERS OF BRIGHTON & HOVE GREEN PARTY have issued statements in response to the GMB's stated intention for their members in cityclean to go on strike for a week starting this Friday 14th June. Leader of the council and convenor of the Green administration, Jason Kitcat, said: "I am disappointed by the GMB decision to begin industrial action this Friday (14th June). I understand the strong feelings involved and am committed to ensuring there is a negotiated solution to resolving the difficult historical equal pay issues for the council's pay and allowances. The council's negotiating team is engaging openly and regularly with both recognised trade unions. "During the forthcoming strike week, which starts on Friday (14th June), the environmental health of the city and its residents are clearly essential and council officers will continue to meet their public health legal obligations but this administration will not sanction the use of agency or contract workers to do the regular work of legitimately striking council staff whilst those staff are out on strike. "Accordingly, I am able to announce that all agency workers currently engaged in refuse collection and street cleaning will be
withdrawn from service by 10pm on Thursday (13th June) night, the day before the strike is due to begin, and agency workers will not be deployed in these areas during the strike week. "The Council continues to invite both recognised unions to negotiating meetings. That offer is being made daily. I urge the GMB to return to the table." Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said: "I know from my postbag that residents in the city are worried about health issues and also about the fair and proper treatment of striking cityclean workers, so I welcome Jason's announcement. This is good news and I hope that now the position on this has been made clear, GMB negotiators will be prepared to return to negotiations before the strike." On behalf of Brighton & Hove Green Party, chair Rob Shepherd said: "It is with a heavy heart that I realise industrial action is imminent. But the Greens in Brighton & Hove have been saying all along that agency staff will not be used for strike breaking during next week's strike and Jason has confirmed this unambiguously. With this said, and with the agency workers being withdrawn well before the strike begins, I join Caroline in encouraging the GMB negotiators back to the table before the strike."

Open letter about strike action Dear resident First of all I would like to apologise and say how disappointed I am that we are now facing formal strike action for seven days beginning on Friday 14 June over our proposals to modernise our allowances system. We will continue to meet with our unions to encourage discussion to avoid this action. I am pleased that GMB has now agreed to attend a meeting this week. We are continuing to do everything we can to find an agreed settlement. This has never been about savings nor specifically Cityclean. The proposals we have put forward will mean allowances are paid consistently and fairly to everyone across the council. At the moment there are variations and we are required by law to make sure the system is fair and transparent. While some staff will gain from our proposals, unfortunately some will see a reduction in their allowances, so we have offered compensation in these cases. If planned industrial action does go ahead on Friday it will unfortunately mean more disruption to our rubbish and recycling service. I would like to say sorry to residents for the problems we may encounter and we will do all we can to minimise disruption. In reality our options are limited; we can’t legally employ agency staff to do the work of striking workers. This week we have removed as much rubbish as possible. During the strike we would advise residents to put rubbish securely in bins or containers. If you can, we would ask for rubbish and recycling to be taken to one of the city’s rubbish and recycling sites on Old Shoreham Road and Wilson Avenue. These will be open for longer during the strike. We hope that residents and visitors will assist us by trying to minimise the build up of rubbish in the city. I am very sorry that our service is being affected during these talks. We will keep you up to date with developments, on our website www.brighton-hove.gov.uk and through our contact centre. We’re doing everything we can to find a resolution. We are pleased that representatives from GMB are now returning to the negotiations. Yours faithfully
Penny Thompson, CBE Chief Executive, Brighton & Hove City Council

Conservatives question need for council tax rise
CONSERVATIVES have strongly criticised the Green and Labour Groups for voting through a 2% council tax rise for this year after new figures reveal that the Council underspent on it’s budget by £4.6 million in the last financial year. The figures are contained in a report going to the Policy & Resources Committee. Back in February, the Conservatives proposed a council tax freeze but were outvoted by a Green/Labour alliance that instead inflicted a 2% increase on residents, which also meant turning down £1.2 million in Government council tax freeze grant. A 2% increase in council tax raises just £2 million for the Council meaning that, contrary to alarmist claims by the Greens and Labour, a council tax freeze would have been easily affordable with this £4.6 million underspend. Conservative Group Leader, Cllr. Geoffrey Theobald, said: “These figures demonstrate once and for all that the council tax rise inflicted upon residents this year was completely unnecessary. Even back in February it was clear that there was going to be a big underspend on the budget so there is simply no excuse for asking residents to fork out more of their hard-earned money. And of course, we shouldn’t forget that the Greens and Labour also turned down £1.2 million which was made available by the Government, had they chosen to go for a freeze. I’m afraid that this all amounts to the city’s two left wing parties playing fast and loose with taxpayers’ money.”
Naked bike riders salute Brighton and Hove as a cycle city OVER SIX HUNDRED PEOPLE joined a nine-mile naked cycle tour of Brighton and Hove on Sunday 9 June. One of over 50 similar events around the globe under the World Naked Bike Ride banner, the environmental protest celebrates the clean, green credentials of bikes and body-powered transport. The cavalcade of bodies and banners on bikes set off from Preston Park, where participants had prepared placards and painted their bodies with slogans declaring the benefits of cycling: 'clean and green', 'cheap and cheerful', 'burn fat not oil!'. A light hearted twist on 'one less car' cycle activism motto, one read 'one less bra!' as a fleet of sound systems pumped out upbeat tunes such as 'The Push-Bike Song' and 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?'. The route took in the sights of the city, passing the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Pier and the seafront, then back past Churchill Square, the Lanes and North Laine, before heading for a big splash at the naturist beach via St James Street and Kemptown. Ride supporter, Alice Pickering, responded to police concerns about public nudity saying: "we had cheers and friendly waves the whole way. It caused much more laughter than alarm, and had an effect of de-stress rather than distress!" Co-organiser Duncan Blinkhorn said: "the ride has been a fantastic demonstration of the pedal-powered, free and easy fun that can be had on a bike." He added: "Many people feel nervous
about getting on a bike because they feel vulnerable in traffic. The World Naked Bike Ride shows that when we have safety in numbers we are emboldened enough to strip away our protective layers and laugh in the face of our vulnerabilities. The more people who cycle, the more confident we feel and, evidence shows, the safer it becomes for everyone. With the terrifying prospect of climate change, this is one way to cut carbon emissions while keeping fit and saving money." Organisers were upbeat about the progress
being made in Brighton and Hove to improve conditions for cycling, saying: "we applaud Brighton and Hove City Council's efforts to improve conditions for cycling with better bike lanes and a 20 mph speed limit, enabling more people to feel safer on their bikes." A post-ride, clothes-optional pool party - the Midsummer Skinny Dip - will be held at Pells pool in Lewes on Saturday 22 June, 7.30-10.30pm. To find out more about this event and others hosted by Brighton Naked Bike Ride - including the 2014 ride - please visit www.worldnakedbikeride.org/brighton

In the old days they would have gone in the stocks Mike Holland WELL I AM NOT VERY OFTEN stuck for words but one of those rare occasions came about on Friday 31st May. I had been cajoled some months earlier into paying for a table at what was billed as "Brighton's Next Hot Model." It was somewhat against my better judgement that I coughed up the £1,000 for a ten seater table, but it was after all at the Sealife Centre where I have attended many excellent events. I had been lured by the promise of high fashion, amazing music, gorgeous food and drinks in sublime surroundings, supporting local fashion, model talent and local business. I soon found out that the only thing high was the price. The event was badly organised from the outset and appeared to have been organised by a bunch of primary school pupils as some sort of outward bound event, whilst the teachers sat in the corner chuckling. Mind you there was nobody chuckling on my table nor on any other that I could see. Our table suddenly had a bottle of Vodka and a bottle of red wine plonked on
it. None of us drink Vodka, so that left the red wine. When I asked where the white wine was I was told they had run out and, despite my protestations that several of my group did not drink red wine, was told they hoped to get some more later in the evening. If I thought the drinks situation was bad that was just the warm up for the food. I have never seen such a disgusting mess in my life as the stuff that was served up to us. I looked around and every single person was complaining. It was totally inedible and the evening had certainly moved on a notch from the notion that primary school children had been involved. This garbage was as though someone had set you up for Candid Camera by serving up slops for a laugh. To compliment the disgusting food and lack of white wine, we were treated to what obviously passes in the organisers minds as entertainment. There was a stage in the proceedings when the MC (a drag queen), admittedly doing her best, completely lost it and screamed at the audience to "shut the **** up". She didn't have to worry too much though as most of the would be diners were on the cusp of leaving anyway. The table next to us all went to the casino for a proper meal whilst we decided to brave it and move on to the after party at OHSO bar on the beach. Now there is nothing wrong with that venue either. I would be surprised if they had even been advised they were to be hosting an event where people would enjoy the sort of VIP treatment we had been promised though.
Indeed we couldn't even get served with a drink nor did I personally clap eyes on the promised Sophie Ellis Bextor; who we were allegedly going to enjoy listening to. All in all I think it is safe to say that was the worst event I have ever attended and I am sure I am not the only person who has politely requested their money back. Will we get it? Not very likely I am afraid as, with the unique skills displayed by the numpties organising
this particular event, I imagine the cupboard is bare. Still at least they are unlikely to have the nerve to cross my path again. The old saying "don't call us we will call you" springs to mind. Anyway, I am sure most of the attendees are unlikely to fall for that one again, even if the so called organisers have not as yet been run out of town. In the old days they would have gone in the stocks. Now there's a thought!

Paddle Round The Pier beach festival is back
HELD IN BRIGHTON SINCE 1996 this popular free event is expected to see visitor numbers of around 50,000 converge onto to Hove Lawns. The two day event will be on July 6 and 7 this year with free exhibitions, have a go sessions, Watersports and beach retail village plus food and drink. Known to be the biggest free charity beach and lifestyle event in the world – “Paddle” has something for the whole family. The event has both serious Paddle and swim races such as the Slip-Stream-Sup 7 & 14 mile Stand up Paddleboard race, and the 10k, 2.5k and 1k open water swims along with the fun stuff like “Paddle Round The Pier” and the crowds favourite; the “Paddle Something Unusual”. There are land and water-borne activities for all ages to try during the whole weekend. The 2013 entertainment stages include: The Main music stage, The kids stage and the increasingly popular Ukulele stage which now sees performers attending from across the UK! Food & drinks will be provided by 10 top restaurants all in close proximity to the main music stage (and this is the only event in the UK where all catering units have to provide a Gluten free dish - so if like the Paddle director Dave Samuel you are gluten or wheat
intolerant, then you have it made!) Among some of the new additions to the event for 2013 are “The Bone yard” Dog show, Muscle beach, A Strongman contest and local Watersports photography exhibitions. Shows and demonstrations in the Paddle Village include Urban Athletics Parkour crew, The Animal WD40 Adventure sports tour, and White Crane Fighting arts. The British BBQ society will be running a national slow cook competition along with running (for the first time at Paddle) a “HotDog-Eating- Contest” on both afternoons – which could be trouble as its right opposite the dog show! As usual there are some thrill rides for the big kids and a special area for younger children. This year sees the introduction of the Bagjump – throw yourself off a 10m platform onto a stunt mans airbag beneath. Paddle Round The Pier is all in aid of charity and Paddle has given over £150,000 away in the past few years alone. It’s a free event to enter but organisers do ask for a £1 donation. Charity beneficiaries for 2013 are: The RNLI, Surf Action and Winstons Wish. For more information please visit www. paddleroundthepier.com

Sea Life Centre and The Pier respond to refuse strike BRIGHTON SEA LIFE CENTRE and The Pier are organising DIY beach cleans in response to the refuse strike. Staff at Brighton Sea Life Centre and The Pier are determined not to let the planned strike by refuse workers lead to a shabby seafront next week. They have issued an appeal for volunteers to join them for an hour beach clean every morning from Saturday (15 June) onwards, and KSD environmental have offered to provide free wheelie bins and empty them for the duration of the strike to take away the rubbish abandoned by Brighton visitors enjoying the beach. “We’re hoping individuals and local businesses will support us and help keep our seafront shipshape and tidy for residents and
visitors alike during the strike,” said curator Carey Duckhouse. “More importantly, as far as we’re concerned, we want to make sure there’s as little litter as possible which might find its way into the sea. “We’re not taking sides,” she added. “This is not an attempt to undermine the action by council workers, simply an effort to safeguard the environment.” Anyone happy to lend a hand should meet in the Sea Life entrance courtyard at 9am on Saturday, June 15th and/or any day thereafter up to and including Friday, June 21st. “We’ll supply bin-bags and litter pickers but volunteers need to bring their own gloves for hygiene reasons, and just in case there is glass or other sharp objects to pick up.”
Consultation starts on Hove police station junior age classes CONSULTATION IS NOW UNDERWAY on a proposal for West Hove Junior School to expand and run the new junior age classes at the former Hove Police Station site in Holland Road. Brighton and Hove City Council bought the Police Station site in May. Three forms of Year 3 entry (up to 96 seven year-olds) are due to start at the site in September 2014, with four forms of entry (up to 128 seven year-olds) as of September 2015. The aim of the council’s proposal for West Hove Junior School to expand and run the Police Station site is to mirror the success of West Hove Infant School’s expansion onto its Connaught site. The ‘parent’ sites of West Hove Infant and West Hove Junior Schools are adjacent to each other on School Road, Hove. The two School Road sites work closely together and are formally linked for school admissions purposes. It is proposed that the Connaught and Police Station sites would be linked in the same way to give pupils continuity. The governing body of West Hove Junior School has agreed in principle to the expansion proposal, but will make a final decision following the consultation. A public meeting has been arranged for Monday 17 June at 7pm at West Hove Infant School’s Connaught site.
Education officials from the council and representatives of both the West Hove schools will update parents on the plans and answer questions. The council’s assistant director of children’s services, Jo Lyons, said: “We believe this proposal is the best way of ensuring that the new junior school places at the Police Station site match the high standards that children, parents and carers expect. We also want to ensure continuity for the Connaught pupils as they reach junior age. “We urge all interested residents to take part in the consultation to ensure the interests of the local community are fully realised.” To see full details of the proposals and complete a form online please visit the consultation portal of the council’s website at www.consult.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ portal The last date for responses is Wednesday 10 July. If the proposal is agreed following the consultation, there will be a four-week statutory notice period starting in early September. Following this the council’s children and young people committee would make a final decision in October. A planning application to use the police station site for educational purposes is expected in the next month or two.
A beauty pageant with a difference
BRIGHTON-BASED TUBERCULOSIS CHARITY, TB Alert, hosted a fundraiser with a difference on Wednesday 05 June – Your Boss is a Drag. Seven bosses, from locally based companies, donned dresses, wigs and heels to compete in a traditional Miss World-style competition – raising in excess of £10,000 to help save lives from TB worldwide. All to the delight of their employees in the audience! A panel of outrageous judges: Sauce FM DJ, Jonesy; and international cabaret stars, Dolly Rocket and Miss Trudi Styles; critiqued the bosses’ efforts in rounds including the Stiletto Sashay and Tonsil Teaser. The evening’s proceedings were ably hosted by Brighton’s premier drag queen Miss Jason. If that was not enough, the audience was treated to The Prowler Parade – fine male specimens in tight underwear – and the chance to win
an array of fabulous prizes, generously donated by local businesses. TB Alert’s thanks and admiration goes out to all the brave participants: Regina Phalange (Will Brown, Southern Water), Chastity Hazzard (Rich Bridger, LGBT police liaison officer), Shamy Wino (Andy Hills, Leaders Estate Agents), Queen Beatrix of the trade (Maarten Van der Velde, Jaspers Online), Paris Stilton (Guy Lloyd, Juice 107.2 FM), Dada Bella Taxi (James Wright, Streamline Taxis) and Boobra Streisand (TB Alert’s very own Chief Executive, Mike Mandelbaum). Regina Phalange stole the show with her excellent cover of Cheryl Cole’s ‘Fight for this Love’, supported by her Southern Water backing dancers. Hopefully this made Regina’s pre-drag persona, Will Brown, feel better about enduring a chest and leg wax, backstage, prior to the show? Mike Mandelbaum, TB Alert Chief Executive, said: “It was a truly unique evening and to date we have raised £10,000 with more expected. I would like to thank all the contestants and the local business community who helped make this event so special. These vital funds will help us raise awareness of TB both in the UK and overseas.”

Students flock to Brighton to learn English this summer
EVERY SUMMER thousands of students flock to the Sussex coast from all over the world, to be welcomed by the fantastic hospitality, culture, shopping and the local people. The majority of the students that travel during the summer period are here to learn English. As a result of these language learners coming to Brighton and Hove, hundreds of thousands of pounds pours into the local community. EF Language Travel will be operating in Brighton for its 47th year, “As one of Brighton’s most established Language Schools it is a real honour to be running the school this year. Welcoming young learners from around the world and showing off this fantastic
city is great.” says Brad Vernon the Operations Manager for EF Language Travel. Brighton continues to be a popular destination with EF, they operate a year round school for adult learners based in Kemp Town and EF Language Travel (for students aged 14-18) that operate their ever popular summer programme. These young learners have a full programme of activities and lessons and travel around Brighton independently while they are here. “The programme we provide, offers a unique way for students to experience all that Brighton has to offer. Not only is this beneficial to students but also to local businesses. Whether it’s a fish and chip shop, or Jump Zone by the pier our, students spend a lot of money during their stay and the majority of this is with local attractions” As a company that has been so long established in Brighton EF has become increasingly proactive in the community; taking part in community events in Hove,
Kemptown, Rottingdean and more. They are also on the lookout for a junior sports team that are looking for sponsorship. “Before Brighton I was the manager of our London operations. We were instrumental in getting Haringey Youth Rugby off the ground. Through EF sponsoring and providing the junior kits, the club are now going from strength to strength and our legacy with the club and the community lives on. It’s something we would love to be a part of again. So any clubs out there looking for a community partner should get in touch!” As EF approaches the summer, we ask

Do you suffer from wobbly ankles? DO YOUR ankles often give way, making playing sport, wearing high heels or simply walking on uneven ground a risky business? Specialist foot and ankle surgeon David Redfern from the Montefiore Hospital has some advice for the condition known as ankle instability. Ankle instability usually starts with a sprain that doesn’t heal properly. Typically you twist your ankle, more often than not while playing sport or walking on uneven ground. Your foot bends too much or in the wrong direction, which stretches the ligaments that keep the ankle joint stable. Sometimes the ligaments tear either partially or completely, depending on the severity of the sprain. On tearing the ligaments, the tiny nerve fibres within the ligaments will be damaged. These are called proprioceptive nerve fibres and their job is to constantly report back to the brain about where your ankle is in relation to the rest of your body and the environment around you. When these nerves are damaged, they don’t relay messages so well, which means your brain isn’t as effective at keeping you stable. Ankle instability is a bit of a vicious circle - you are more prone to sprains, but with each sprain the ligaments become increasingly weakened, which in turn makes your ankle more unstable and so on…
There are, however, other causes of the ankle giving way, so it is important that you undergo a detailed examination by a specialist who will advise on the best treatment. This will depend on several factors: the exact cause of the instability, the severity of the symptoms, treatments already tried and your lifestyle and level of activity. Physiotherapy is the first line of treatment and is often very effective. It is directed at retraining the damaged proprioceptive nerve fibres and encouraging the ligaments to heal, as well as strengthening the muscles around your ankle with specific exercises and activities. Sometimes your foot shape can make you prone to suffering sprains and can increase the stress on the ankle ligaments. In this circumstance, a custom made corrective inner sole for your shoe may be advised. There are also various ankle supports worn inside your shoe that restrict certain movements in the ankle, improving stability. Surgery may be considered if non-operative treatments have not worked. The most common procedure is to tighten and re-attach the damaged ligaments to the bone. This type of operation is very effective and is usually performed through a small incision on the outside of the ankle. It is often combined with arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) to inspect the ankle joint and treat any other associated problems.

Behind The Candelabra (15) Running time: 118 mins Director: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, Scott Bakula,Debbie Reynolds,Cheyenne Jackson, Bruce Ramsay, Nicky Katt, Boyd Holbrook, Paul Reiser,Eddie Jemison By turns laugh-out-loud funny, jawdroppingly camp and powerfully moving, this is a hugely entertaining drama/ biopic with a superb script and a pair of terrific performances from Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. What’s it all about? Directed by Steven Soderbergh and based on the book by Scott Thorson, Behind the Candelabra stars Matt Damon as 17 year old animal handler Scott Thorson, who begins a five year relationship with flamboyant 57 year old pianist Liberace (Michael Douglas) after they’re introduced by a mutual friend (Scott Bakula) in 1976. Smitten with Scott, Liberace (or ‘Lee’, to his friends) gives him a job and moves him into his house, making him a complex mix of secret lover, personal assistant and surrogate son. However, complications set in when Liberace introduces Scott to his plastic surgeon Dr Love Brighton-0706:Layout 1

Jack Startz (Rob Lowe) and insists he gets surgery so as to look more like a younger version of Liberace. This, in turn, leads to Scott developing an addiction to various painkillers and when Liberace begins to lose interest, the relationship comes under a heavy strain. The Good Michael Douglas gives the performance of his career as Liberace, simultaneously capturing the preening narcissism and the outrageously over-the-top showbiz personality, while also letting us see the aching loneliness and need for true love under the surface. Matt Damon is equally good as Thorson, generating

FOUR out of Five stars Richard LaGravenese’s script is excellent, skilfully blending dark humour (‘Will I be able to close my eyes again?’, ‘Not entirely, no...’) and high camp (there are catty looks and bitchy one-liners in abundance) while also portraying a convincing relationship that is genuinely moving, as we clearly see what both men get out of the relationship. It’s also quietly heartbreaking in its observations of the contrast between Liberace’s private and public life, particularly in the scene where he reads from his autobiography, declaring his life-long love for a woman who never even appears on screen. Needless to say, the film is further heightened by some exceptional production design that fully embraces what Liberace refers to as ‘palatial kitsch’, not to mention some costuming work that features what must be the tiniest pants ever committed to celluloid. There’s also a superb score from Soderbergh’s frequent collaborator Marvin Hamlisch. Worth seeing? Behind the Candelabra is an outrageously entertaining drama with a superb script and terrific performances from Douglas and Damon. If Soderbergh really is retiring from filmmaking as he has apparently promised, then he will be sorely missed; here’s hoping he’ll be back behind the camera soon. Highly recommended.

surprisingly effective chemistry with Douglas and convincingly portraying gradual druginduced deterioration in the second half of the film. In addition, there are a number of standout supporting turns, including Rob Lowe (hilarious as the plastic surgery addicted doctor whose face is permanently rigid), Dan Aykroyd (as Liberace’s long-suffering manager), Scott Bakula (sporting a wonderful Village Peopleesque moustache as Bob Black) and Debbie Reynolds as Liberace’s slot-machine-obsessed mother.

Julian sparkles at Brighton Dome Julian Clarey - Position Vacant Apply Within Brighton Dome Review by Lynn James I ARRIVED at Brighton Dome approximately 7.45 on Saturday night filled with excitement as Julian has been a favourite of mine since’ The Joan Collins Fanclub’ days! I didn’t have to wait long and he walked serenely on stage all aglitter in a fabulous red sequined jacket and perfect makeup! He started with a song ‘Homo Mambo’ which was delivered with perfection and style. He went on to tell us that he only employs lesbians backstage as they will always carry your bags with style and they don’t take any nonsense from anyone! He went on to say he had given in to endorsement pressure and he currently has a contract with ‘Blue nun’ wine which he spoke of frequently during the show. He told us a couple of stories from his stint in the Big Brother House which involved Julie Goodyear which was very amusing. He told us that he is currently looking for love after the breakup with his long term partner and if he can’t pull in Brighton then he wouldn’t be able to pull anywhere! He then performed ‘Boyfriend’ by Justin Beiber which he performed excellently.
After this, Julian chose various men in the audience to be taken to the ‘Mincing Meadow’ on stage and asked to perform sing a certain song or answer a question from which he would choose a befitting partner. The venue was packed and there was laughter everywhere, he really is a joy to behold. I heard lots of people talking about the show on the way to the car park and many said they would see him again and how much they enjoyed the performance. Come back soon Julian, Brighton loves you.

Award winning smoked Salmon ASDA’S Extra Special Scottish Smoked Salmon with Malt Whiskey has won a Gold at the Grocer Food and Drink awards. As part of judging for these awards consumer panels are held, the customer judges felt “the inclusion of malt whiskey was an indulgence”. The quality of the fish was the key selling point as the salmon was “succulent”, “moist” and “very fresh” the product was described as a subtle taste of malt whiskey, but a strong smoked flavour. Asda’s Extra Special Smoked Salmon is from the west coast and islands of Scotland. The rough, tidal waters in this area mean the fish are strong and lean. They then smoke all the Extra Special smoked salmon for 24 hours. It is then sliced and just before it’s packed and given a generous coating of specially selected Glen Moray Classic® Single Malt Scotch Whiskey. The slices of smoked salmon then retain a robust whiskey aroma yet a gentle oaky flavour which enable the delicate smoked salmon flavour but does not over power it.

Bad kitchen habits raises risk of poisoning MORE THAN 80% of consumers have at least one poor kitchen habit that puts them at risk of food poisoning, according to a survey. The poll for the Food Standards Agency found that 43% would eat food after the "use by" date, 29% would eat food that has been dropped on the floor, and more than a third (36%) wash chicken before cooking it, potentially splashing bacteria around the kitchen. The study, to mark Food Safety Week, also found that 35% of people do not check "use by" dates, with 85% of this group preferring to sniff food to decide if it is safe and 68% looking at its colour. Unlike "best before" dates, "use by" dates relate to safety and are based on scientific testing. More than a fifth of those questioned (21%) said they do not wash their hands properly before preparing food. While 83% admitted to one or more habits when cooking at home that could put them at risk of food poisoning, the same percentage said they have confidence in their food hygiene all or most of the time and 93% believe they have never given family or friends food poisoning. If they do fall ill themselves, only 5% consider whether the cleanliness of their own kitchen is the cause. The agency is launching an online "kitchen
check" which asks consumers to look at their food preparation practices, and gives a score and some tips based on their answers. FSA food safety expert Bob Martin said: "By not washing their hands before preparing food at home, or ignoring 'use by' dates, people could be setting themselves and
their friends or family up for a bout of really unpleasant illness. "We've created the kitchen check to help people to think about what they do in their own homes and make it easier for people to be knowledgeable and confident about storing and preparing food."
Oysters top list of food Brits refuse to eat OYSTERS have topped a list of foods that British people refuse to eat. The recent survey found that 47% of Brits would reject the delicacy if it was offered to them, with the percentage increasing to 57% for women. The results of Save the Children's study put liver and anchovies in second and third place with 46% and 45% respectively. The survey asked 2,011 British adults to list foods they could not or would not eat.

42% said they would refuse tofu, with 39% expressing a dislike for black pudding and 37% saying they would not eat sushi. Also in the top ten most unpopular foods for Brits were blue cheese (34%), olives (33%) and marzipan (26%). Just 5% of respondents said they did not dislike any food. The survey was undertaken ahead of the G8 nutrition summit in Northern Ireland, which aims to drive global action to reduce hunger and malnutrition.

Diva behaviour costs UK couples £2,640 per year
UK debit card spending on the increase
OVER A third of UK couples are spiralling into debt as a result of indulging their partner's diva demands, according to new research from Quidco. Entertaining demanding partners with luxury holidays, fine dining and a demand for designer labels is setting British boyfriends back by a whopping £1,632 every year. However, despite women stereotypically being the most attention grabbing in a relationship, the research shows that the rise of the metrosexual is leading to a wave of high-maintenance men in modern couples. So much so, it sees women across the country splashing out £84 each month on ‘man maintenance.' Dolling out lavish gifts and splurging on expensive dates is becoming a constant concern for couples across the nation, as seven in ten of the adults questioned admitted to worrying about the cost of keeping up with the wants and needs of their other-half. What's more, Brits are turning to their credit cards in a bid to meet the diva demands from a partner, with the average bill reaching £1,426. Thirty two per cent of women surveyed have found themselves in debt by entertaining high maintenance partners, with almost 40% of UK men in the red, as a result.
ONE IN FOUR (24%) Brits now uses a debit card more frequently than they did a year ago, with four in 10 shoppers preferring to use a debit card rather than carrying cash, according to research from M&S Bank. This compares to a 14 per cent increase in credit card use over the last 12 months. The use of debit cards has increased most in the 18-35 age group (33%), closely followed by those aged 35 -54 (27%), compared to 18% of those aged 55+. Brits are becoming savvier with their spending, with over half (51%) admitting that loyalty points influence how and where they shop. M&S Bank found that over six in 10 consumers (66%) use some type of reward card, with more than two thirds (69%) regularly redeeming their points; increasing to over 90 per cent for M&S Bank customers. Colin Kersley, CEO of M&S Bank, said: "Although our research shows that many shoppers are using reward credit cards, debit card spending totalled £348bn in 2012, more than double that spent on credit cards, so it's perhaps not surprising that more than one in five of us would switch providers to earn rewards on debit card spend." The rise in debit card spending is also

Andy Oldham, Managing Director at Quidco, comments: "All couples like to spoil each other and make one another happy, but splashing out on expensive treats in a continually challenging financial climate can be dangerous for cash-strapped Casanovas. "Quidco offers a wide range of cashback deals on all the must-have items and experiences - from the latest fashion buys to breaks abroad - helping generous partners to pocket some money back when treating that someone special. Plus, with hundreds of vouchers available on the site, Quidco can help Britain's romantics wine and dine their loved ones without breaking the bank."
Horoscopes Aries All work and no play make Jack and Jill dull. This is the week for setting priorities and boundaries. You also have a tendency to overspend and you will need to curtail that this week. Focus on the cerebral rather than the material and you will be surprised at the feeling of well being this engenders. Taurus You have been dealing with some feelings of insecurity of late which have made you doubt your worth. Put aside such negative ideas. Use the knowledge gained from inner reflection to catalogue your strengths. A little distance between you and your nearest and dearest will give you both time to recharge emotionally and bring your closer in the long term. Gemini Keep something in reserve this week. Use your energy effectively otherwise it becomes wasted. Choose wisely the projects that require you attention and shelve those that can wait. There are big changes afoot on the romantic front in the not too distant future; a big commitment may be on its way.
Horoscopes from Kimi
14th June - 20th June
Cancer You are feeling a little disenfranchised this week. Make known your concerns and get your questions answered, you will then be able to proceed with confidence. There has been an idea that you have been working on for some time that now appears to be more than feasible. Trust your intuition. Leo How’s that new relationship going? Well you won’t know unless you ask will you? Don’t be fearful, you may be pleasantly surprised at the answer you receive. All things literary are on the agenda for your social life this week, could be the theatre, concert or recital. Whatever it is you will feel culturally enriched.
Virgo Movement is on the agenda for the coming week and not necessarily a physical move. Changes to your relationships, work status or geographical location could be about to take place. In order to make the most of new opportunities preparation is the key. You need to feel and be in control Virgo, so get out the diary and plan. Libra Your work load seems overwhelming. Roll up your sleeves up, use some of that good old fashioned work ethic you possess and you will find that things will get done more quickly that you thought. You will then have time to spend with your significant other, as they have something to say you need to hear. Scorpio You have been going through some challenging times of late. It is now time to put the past behind and move forwards. Things are sometimes not all they seem and neither are people. You may be pleasantly surprised at how supportive someone can be that you previously thought was negative. Your social life should be fun packed this week. Sagittarius Objectivity is your byword of the week. You need to take a step back and really see a situation for what it truly is
partly down to the fact that consumers are keen to budget more, with 43 per cent of those who have increased their debit card use doing so because they want to better track their spending. Looking at credit card usage, the M&S Bank research shows that credit cards are currently the preferred method of payment for more expensive items, such as holidays (62%), clothes (46%) and even petrol (47%). Credit cards are also used for purchasing treats, with over a third (35%) preferring this method of payment for beauty products and treatments, while 27 per cent use a credit card for everyday items such as lunches or takeaway coffee, suggesting they're maximising their rewards. Of those who have increased their credit card usage, or taken out a new card (9%), in the last 12 months', most have done so to get cash back or rewards, with 36 per cent citing this as one of the main reasons. This rises to almost half (45%) among 35-54 year olds. In contrast, 28 per cent of all card holders said the key reason for choosing their main credit card is because they also bank with the same provider, but 21 per cent of all credit card holders would switch if it meant earning more rewards on their spending.
and to see yourself as others do. You can be a bit avant garde but that is part of your physical appeal and universal attraction. Don’t change something that works well for you! Capricorn All things energetic and physical will be of importance this week. You could be contemplating an activity holiday or simply taking the dog for a walk. Use this time wisely to upgrade your fitness level because your physical being is intrinsically linked to your emotional being. A loved one will make a declaration which makes for a light bulb moment! Aquarius Just go with the flow this week and enjoy the moment. Trying to be too analytical will just take the shine off what should prove to be a very enjoyable week and will leave you with more questions than answers. You will make better connections by doing less and letting the fun side of you show through. Pisces I know it is difficult to accept but you are only a small part of a larger entity! I am not saying that you have no control but you do need to acknowledge your limitations. Try to understand how connections both spiritual and physical can influence your life. To feel fulfilled work with these forces and not against them.

As well as being available on the Bentley stand, Guy will be driving the Speed 8 on the Cholmondeley track. Two new Bentley Continental ‘Speed’ models are also appearing at the Pageant of Power. Time to re-tyre your rubber? OVER 10 MILLION tyres on UK roads could be dangerous, not because of poor tread, but because of their age, according to new research. Worryingly, the study for Kwik Fit, UK tyre retailer, found that only 17% of drivers know how to identify when their car’s tyres were manufactured, and thus how old they are. With many motorists cutting down the number of miles they drive each year (vehicle traffic was lower in the first quarter of 2013 than at any time since 2001) drivers may find their tyres reach the end of their life, well before the tread nears the legal limit of 1.6mm. The research showed that well over half (59%) of UK drivers are unaware that their tyres display the information needed to work out their age, and that 24% are aware, but unable to interpret the numbers. This means that 83% of drivers don’t know how to assess the age of their tyres. However, although they may not know how to tell the exact age of their tyres, over six million drivers thought that their car had a tyre which was over five years old. Combined with those who don’t know the age of their tyres (14%), it could mean that more than 11 million tyres on cars could be out of date and putting the driver at risk. Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit warns those car owners driving fewer miles than in previous years to check the age of their tyres. He says: “Tyres contain anti-oxidising chemicals to slow down the rate of ageing, but the tyres need
to be in use for these to be effective. In other words, infrequent use or poor storage can accelerate the ageing process and make tyres unroadworthy. Low mileage, older cars tend to be most at risk from premature ageing − as their owners assume there is no problem if they can still see plenty of tread. “We would recommend drivers consider changing a tyre that’s more than five years old, even if it’s not down to the legal tread limit. If motorists are unsure about the age of their tyres or would like an expert opinion on their condition, they can bring them in to any Kwik Fit to have them checked over.” On a regional basis, motorists in the capital appear to be the most likely to be travelling on the oldest rubber, with 41% of Londoners revealing their tyres could be more than five years old. This is almost twice as many as those in the north east, where only 22% could potentially be too old.

County The all-rounder hit a career-best 187 to
help secure a draw against Middlesex after Sussex were forced to follow on. He told BBC Sussex: "To come out with a draw is a great effort but we are not in it to
keep surviving in games. "If we want to win the Championship we have got to play better. We want people to get scores in the first innings. That's how put pressure on people." Wright, who missed the start of the domestic season because of a spell in the Indian Premier League, top-scored for Sussex in both innings as well as picking up two wickets. "We probably didn't do the right thing with the toss but we need to bat better and bowl better in the first innings," the 28-yearold added. "In an ideal world my 187 would have come in the first innings instead of getting out on 70-odd, although it's different when you're seven or eight wickets down. "That's what Chris Rogers did to us and put us under a lot of pressure." Sussex remain top of the Division One table after denying Middlesex a win but Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson says the result must not "paper over some cracks". "It feels like we got out of jail," Robinson told BBC Sussex.
"We haven't had a great game. We misread the wicket to an extent, we have not batted particularly well and we dropped catches that put us under pressure. "We have only come away with five points. It means we are unbeaten and it stops Middlesex, who are up there with us, from picking up points,. "But we finished the game strongly and that's what you want to do." Meanwhile Wright has praised spinner Will Beer for his role in Sussex's fightback at Lord's. The 24-year-old made 25 and 39 in the first and second innings respectively to help Wright in crucial partnerships of 88 and 101. "He came in and batted brilliantly and very calmly under a lot of pressure," Wright said. "He lined it up brilliantly and took a lot of pressure off me. They kept giving him one at the end of an over, he kept taking it and kept seeing off one over after another. "For a guy that hasn't played too much first-team Championship cricket, he was very impressive in the game."

Bridcutt explains difficult decision BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION midfielder Liam Bridcutt has explained the difficult decision to pull out of the Scotland squad that take on Croatia in Zagreb on Friday night, owing to injury. The 24-year-old admitted that he has been struggling with a groin problem throughout the closing month of the Championship season, which required extra rest to make sure that he is fit for pre-season, ahead of Albion’s 2013/14 campaign. He told seagulls.co.uk: “Everyone who knows me knows that I always want to play, even if I’m injured or ill, so it was a really hard decision to pull out. But if I did play this game it would set me back another couple of weeks and then I would be at risk of missing the beginning of pre-season as well, which is a priority. “I spoke to Gordon [Strachan] and he knew I was disappointed, and he was also disappointed that I couldn’t make it. It’s just one of those things. If I don’t rest and let it recover I could be at risk of not being fully fit for next season and I can’t risk that.
“I’m on holiday in Cyprus at the moment but this is the only break I will get. I’ve been in for treatment every other day since the season finished then when I get back I will be in every day for treatment to make sure that everything is right. Bridcutt insisted that it’s not a serious injury but a problem that needs time to recover. “It’s not a massive problem but it needs time to settle. The doctor said that it will be five to six weeks rest and then it will be fine. “I had a problem with a stress fracture to my pubis a few years ago and that might have affected it. Now is the right time to get it sorted if I want to get through the whole season playing every game. “I was carrying a few injuries throughout last season and for the last month I was playing with injections which is not ideal for a player my age. But it was a crucial time for us and I wanted to play every game. “It’s one of those things and now it’s just rest, do my programme and I'll come back 100 per cent ready.”

Launched by County Championship title sponsors, LV=, the award is now in its second year after Yorkshire CCC opening batsman Joe Root claimed the inaugural title in 2012.
