BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION have named former Barcelona midfielder Oscar Garcia as their new head coach in the wake of Gus Poyet’s dismissal. The 40-year-old’s arrival as a head coach rather than “manager” appears to stem from Poyet’s on-going appeal against his dismissal after almost four years at the football club. The club’s chairman, Tony Bloom, had since indicated that no permanent successor would be

Hove seafront garage on sale for £110,000 Garage expected to fetch £110,000
A MODEST looking garage on Hove seafront is going up for auction in July with a guide price of £110,000 for the leasehold. The lock-up measures 1,000 sq ft, and has enough space for five cars. The lot has been described as a “garage and workshop and store” that measures 1,000 square feet, with “possible development potential” or “ideal as a storage facility.” The auctioneers are keen to highlight the garage’s close location to the seafront and
nearby Western Street’s “comprehensive shopping facilities and amenities.” The price may appear high at first glance but a single garage sold in the same block recently sold for just over £20,000. However, this garage could house from five, up to seven cars. The garage has also been described as just meters from the seafront and local shops. A local man didn’t think the garage posed a good value purchase: “It’s ridiculous, it’s things like this that are pricing other people
out the market. I know I can never buy around here, flats where I live fetch quarter of a million easily but a garage for £110,000! People my age group haven't got a chance.” Another local resident disagreed: “I think it’s about the right price because another garage sold a few months ago for £20,000, so a garage of that size is quite a sizable property and has possible other uses other than just a garage.” The auction, hosted by Parsons Son and Basley, takes place on July 8.
Bin strikes temporarily suspended FOLLOWING A SERIES OF NEGOTIATIONS between representatives of Brighton and Hove City Council and GMB, a proposal has been made which enables the current industrial action to be temporarily suspended. The negotiations focused on the council’s proposed changes to the allowances currently paid to staff. The latest proposal made by the council includes a service redesign which will be to the benefit of residents of the city. As a result GMB has now agreed to suspend the industrial action for a period of 28 days. This will allow the GMB Union to consult its members as to whether they accept the proposal by a postal ballot. Mark Turner, GMB Branch Secretary said: “We have made significant progress over recent days, the proposal significantly reduces or in some cases eliminates the losses for individual staff members which arose under the previous offer, however there are still some areas that must be addressed. I will be continuing to meet with the council regarding these aspects of the proposal. “For their part, the council have committed
to confirm to each staff member how the revised proposal will affect them on an individual basis. When this detailed information is received we will then conduct a postal ballot of our members to ask them whether they accept or reject the changes. “In the interim I can confirm that we have suspended our industrial action, for a period of 28 days, to allow this process to take place.” Penny Thompson, Brighton and Hove City Council Chief Executive said: “We’ve put forward what we consider to be a good service redesign proposal. It is good for the residents and good for the city. I am really pleased that already the Cityclean workforce are back and working hard and fast to clear up the city. “We are more than half way through a consultation period on an allowances system for staff across the council which is fair, consistent and affordable. We are aiming for an October implementation. Talks are continuing with both unions to this end.”
Anorak Corner Did you know? A taster of Brighton facts and figures... The train line between London and Brighton was completed in September 1841. Over 3,500 men and 570 horses were used to build the railway.
Continued from page 1 Poyet received news of his dismissal on Sunday evening while working for BBC Sport on their Confederations Cup coverage, but the club insist the 45-year-old was “aware his dismissal was pending.” Poyet, assistant Mauricio Taricco and coach Charlie Oatway were suspended last month pending an internal inquiry into alleged breaches of contract. Taricco had his ban lifted, but has left the club by mutual consent, while Oatway is still suspended. Meanwhile, Maccabi have announced that assistant boss Ruben Martinez and fitness coach Juan Torrijo Navaro have left to “continue their partnership with Oscar Garcia.” In an illustrious playing career Garcia played for Barcelona and Valencia amongst others, before stepping into coaching as youth coach at the Nou Camp. His first senior role was as manager of Maccabi Tel Aviv, and in his first season at the club guided the Israeli side to their first league title win in a decade. Playing career: Barcelona B, Barcelona, Albacete (loan), Valencia, Espanyol, Lleida. Coaching career: Catalonia (assistant), Barcelona (youth), Maccabi Tel Aviv (manager).

@rwoodmusic What a lovely day here in Brighton! Time to go house hunting #beingagrowup
IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE there are 158 young people aged 16-19 leaving council care this year. These children are among the most vulnerable in the city, often coming from difficult backgrounds and experiences. The feedback we get from those leaving care, foster carers and social workers is that care leavers need extra support to make sure they are able to succeed in life. For young people reaching the end of their time in care, it can be very difficult to transition to living independently as an adult. They need more help and advice than others might to help them to find work or training. So I’m delighted that we recently agreed a programme of careers advice and work placements especially for young people in care and leaving care. Among the proposals are that of the 70 placements and apprenticeships for young people we hope to make available every year for the next three years, a minimum of five in the council will be ring-fenced for young people in care and leaving care. We will also continue the work we already

Elderly Hove resident deceived by bogus builder AN ELDERLY HOVE MAN has been deceived into handing out more than a thousand pounds by a bogus builder. At about 1pm on Friday 14 June a man called at the house occupied by the 85-year old, in Cranmer Avenue, Hove, saying he was a workman and that he thought the roof needed repairing. The victim allowed him to look at it through the loft and paid the suspect £1,400 cash. The man left without carrying out any work and was not seen again. The suspect is described as white, aged about 40, 5' 5", of fat build with a pot belly, with short light brown hair. He was wearing a grey golfing-style cap, a large loose black jumper, grey loose fitting trousers and grey trainers. It is believed an accomplice was nearby, but was not seen.
Detective Constable Brad Lozynski said: "This was a really unpleasant theft which has left the victim greatly distressed. Please contact us if you saw this man or his accomplice in Hove on Friday. "We regularly remind local residents especially the elderly, to beware of cold callers. Do not allow them into your property, and do not enter into any financial agreement with them, unless you are completely satisfied that they are genuine. If in doubt, keep them out and call us, via 999 if they are still present or nearby, or via 101 if they have left the scene." Any witness or anyone with information about this theft is asked to call 101 quoting serial 0841 of 14/6. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Man sentenced for Hove motorbike fatal collision A MAN HAS PLEADED GUILTY and been sentenced for causing death by careless driving after a fatal collision in Hove last year. Emergency services were called to Davigdor Road in Hove at 6.25am on Tuesday, August 28 to a report if a collision between a motorcyclist and a car. The motorcyclist, 34-year-old Jacek Sawa from Brighton, sadly died at the scene. Wayne Metcalfe, 69 of Clifton Road, Newhaven pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and defective
eyesight at Lewes Crown Court on June 21. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for two years, disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to do 100 hours community service. • POLICE ARE HUNTING a gang of teenagers who robbed a woman and assaulted her partner. The victims were walking north in Boundary Road, Portslade, when they were surrounded by a gang of more than a dozen 12 to 15-year-old boys and girls at the bus stop close to the junction with New Church Road. Members of the group demanded the woman hand over her bag and one of the girls from the group snatched it from her. The children ran away and the woman's partner chased them to try to recover the bag. When he caught up with them he was surrounded again and knocked to the ground. Members of the gang then punched and kicked him while he was on the ground. The gang took the man's backpack from
him and ran down an alleyway between Franklin Road and Vale Road in Portslade. The man suffered a fractured cheekbone and broken ribs in the attack. Among the items stolen in the robbery, which happened at around 11.15pm on 21 June, were bank cards, mobile phones and the two bags. Detective Constable Rowan Carter, of Brighton and Hove CID, said: "This was a terrifying unprovoked attack on the couple who were simply trying to make their way home. "We need to speak to anyone who could identify any of the children involved in this violent and brutal robbery or who saw what happened." Anyone with information should call 101 quoting reference 2029 of 21 June.

Conservatives welcome Government empty homes funding CONSERVATIVE GROUP housing spokesman – Cllr. Garry Peltzer Dunn – has welcomed the news that the Government is to allocate a further half a million pounds to Brighton and Hove City Council to bring empty private sector housing back into use. The latest allocation brings the total amount of funding from the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency to tackle the blight of empty properties in Brighton and Hove to £1.2 million this year. The funding is used to refurbish long-term empty properties which are then leased back to the Council for 5 or 10 years and used as temporary accommodation for residents in severe housing need. It is
hoped that the money will help to bring 71 empty properties back into use in this way over the next two years. Cllr Peltzer Dunn said: “There is nothing more aggravating than seeing perfectly good homes lying empty and in Brighton and Hove we have more than our fair share of them. In addition, we have a serious housing shortage and little land available to build new properties, so getting these empty homes back into circulation is vital. I am delighted that the Government has recognised this and allocated us a significant sum of money. The Council’s empty property team has an excellent track record in getting homes back into use and I am confident that they will make good use of this new funding.”

The eternal pursuit of happiness in Brighton and Hove
Maze to come to Brighton Pavilion for the summer
‘HAPPINESS’ IS THE THEME explored in the new annual report of the Director of Public Health published this week. The report makes the case for Happiness in Brighton and Hove and reveals some surprising statistics about who is the happiest and how we can get happier. It focuses on those aspects that affect people’s happiness and selfsatisfaction and their relationship with physical and mental health. There is a strong case for measuring and seeking to improve happiness and wellbeing, the report says, supporting the view that negative emotions can harm health and affect the choices that people make such as smoking, diet, alcohol and sexual behaviour. Topics tackled include the decline of opiates and the rise of club drugs, ways to improve mental health as well as falling alcohol use in young people (aged 11-14 years). Other stories focus on how people in early retirement are taking advantage of city schemes such as Heathwalks to stay fit and the way happiness varies by gender, race and religion. The report shows that while most people living in Brighton and Hove are happy and satisfied with their life, the city also has significant mental health needs. The ‘One Planet Living’ framework, a
A 22M BY 22M MAZE is to be installed for the summer on the Eastern Lawns of the Royal Pavilion. The maze is to be created by the same Brighton c ompany behind the Royal Pavilion ice rink. The maze is due to open on Thursday 4 July and is based on The Selfish Giant, a story by Oscar Wilde. Shella Parkin, managing director of Laine Ltd, said: “We wanted to create something amazing for the school summer holidays on the eastern lawns in addition to our popular winter attraction. “I’ve always loved mazes and felt the Pavilion deserved its own one as there has been a long history of association between historic buildings and mazes. “Our aim is to create a maze that looks as though it has always been there but somehow ‘out of view’. “Our design is inspired by a story I’ve loved since I was a little girl and have read aloud to my own children.” The story of The Selfish Giant is one of a giant who owns a beautiful garden which has peach trees and lovely fragrant flowers, in which children love to play. On the giant's return from seven years visiting his friend the Cornish Ogre, he takes offence at the children, and builds a wall to keep them out. He later goes on to learn the error of his ways.
set of ten principles to help the council’s work in addressing environmental, social and economic sustainability, cites ‘Health and Happiness’ as one of its main tenets. While the overwhelming majority of young people are happy, the report found levels vary in minority ethnic groups and the city has seen an 80% increase in BME residents and a 12% fall in the number of older residents. Key statistics also include the number of drug related deaths falling from 67 deaths in 2000 to 20 in 2011 and a rise from 15% to 24% over a decade in the proportion of adults taking the recommended weekly levels of exercise. Smoking rates continue to fall in adults and children with people who have never smoked being happiest. Tom Scanlon, Brighton and Hove City Council’s Director of Public Health, said: “Does happiness make us healthier, bring more life satisfaction? Who amongst us in Brighton and Hove is happiest and why? We do have lots of questions but only some of the answers. We all want to be happy, so I have no doubt that we have selected a subject matter for this annual report that will interest many readers.”
The attraction will be based on a Roman design and made up of 360 metres of corridors and hidden garden rooms evoking the four seasons in the Giant’s Garden. On their quest to find the middle, visitors can expect to encounter spooky sound effects, giant gardening tools, riddles and traditional games. The organisers said that it would startle and delight adults and children alike as they try to find their way to the centre of the maze. The attraction will cost £4 per person. The opening hours will be 11am to 7pm and will run until Tuesday 3 September.

Air Ambulance to deliver 24-hour service
KENT, SURREY & SUSSEX Air Ambulance has announced the arrival of its new helicopter. The newer version of the MD902 Explorer aircraft will replace the charity’s existing helicopter based at Redhill ready for night flying in late summer. In preparation for the 24-hour operation, the charity’s specialist doctor and paramedic crew have already begun to deliver a medical service using an emergency response car through the night. Adrian Bell, Chief Executive of the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance, said: ‘We believe that there is a real and identifiable need for the skills of a specialist medical team during the night as well as through the day. “To this end, we have replaced one of our helicopters with a new version capable of night operations. While we are waiting for the necessary regulatory processes to be completed we have started operating by car during the hours of darkness. “This has been a very useful exercise in helping us to prepare for a 24-hour operation and has allowed us to learn more about the technicalities and logistics of operating at night without the incumbencies of aviation issues.” The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance has helicopters based at Marden and Redhill. The helicopter at Marden will continue to operate during daylight hours and is expected to be replaced with a night flying capable aircraft within the next 18 months.

A new concept of supermarket to be trialled in Brighton
A COMPANY called HiSbe thinks supermarkets are boring, unethical and old-fashioned, and plan on creating a different kind of supermarket, with their first launching in Brighton. The company was founded in 2010 by sisters Ruth and Amy Anslow. They are passionate about good, ethical food and social responsibility. They have backgrounds in marketing, branding and community work. Social enterprise, HiSbe, stands for ‘how it Should be.’ HiSbe believes in paying all staff above the Living Wage and using profits to support its social purpose of making food more affordable, more fair and more sustainable. In conjunction with Buzzbnk, a leading crowd-funding platform for social enterprises, the company plans to raise capital through the community. They have already raised £14,000 and support is
building fast. Anyone can support the venture by contributing now and being repaid in moneyoff vouchers to spend when the store opens later this year. For every £10 shoppers give upfront to help get the store re-furbished, stocked and staffed, they’ll receive £12 in savings. The site for the first store is in the heart of Brighton, York Place, where hiSbe will be selling reasonably priced ethical food to suit lots of budgets. They plan not to take big profits and pass on savings direct to customers. The design will be more futuristic than

your average supermarket, with a modern layout for the 21st century shoppers. The hiSbe store will include four ‘pods’, where local food/ ethical product entrepreneurs can try out their business in a friendly environment with a captive audience of families, students and anyone else interested in good, ethical, modestly priced food. They plan to sell certain dry food by weight so customer can buy as much or as little as they need. This will supposedly help budgeting and avoid packaging waste. What on earth has that to do with local tourism? Mike Holland WHAT A LOAD of absolute piffle we are hearing from our council with regard to the so called ‘advisory board’ they are talking about setting up to help shape the future of the city’s tourism strategy. Apparently, the proposed board is to include senior members from private companies including the city’s digital sector, educational establishments, tourism associations and local councillors. Right, how does that work then? For a start, the last people you want on there are a bunch of councillors. The whole idea of an advisory board is to advise councillors who know absolutely diddly squat about tourism on the best way forward to promote the industry in our city. So having ruled them out we then must also question why any sane person would seriously suggest having anyone from the digital sector. What on earth has that to do with local tourism? Please tell me when you last heard of someone jumping in their car in Croydon and suggesting to the family they are off to look at the digital sector in
Brighton. Assuming I am right and this is about as unlikely as Jason Kitcat having a statue erected to him in Brighton Square. Can we please agree that people from the digital sector should be on a panel advising councillors on the digital sector not the tourism sector. That now leaves us with education establishments and tourism associations. Once again, we need to ask ourselves why there would need to be anyone from the educational establishments on the board advising on tourism. I doubt very much that if there were an advisory board set up to advise on educational matters that they would be seeking advice from the tourism associations. Therefore, having ruled out on basic common sense grounds councillors, digital sector and education establishments that leaves tourism associations. The only tourism association that holds any credibility whatsoever is The Tourism Alliance who work extremely hard and represent all the major tourist attractions in our city. Therefore I was somewhat stunned to learn that Geoffrey Bowden, who is filling the very grand sounding post of Chairman of the Economic Development and Culture Committee, thinks quite the reverse. Apparently he believes that The Tourism Alliance are out of touch for questioning the relevance of the digital sector needing to be represented on the board. He states that he is amazed in fact that The Tourism
Alliance are not sharp enough to recognise the contribution the digital sector can make to our visitor economy. Actually Geoffrey I think it is you who is not sharp enough to realise that anyone with half a brain knows exactly what the game is. You and your party are afraid that any real independent board of advisers will give you advice you really do not want to hear. They would undoubtedly advise you to cut back and reverse the lunatic anti car stance that your party has taken and adopt a more rational approach. They would no doubt
tell you that the city do not want protest marches that disrupt our seafront or town centre trade. They will tell you that you must have contingency measures in place in case there is another refuse collection strike. Yes Geoffrey they will tell you all the things you don’t want to hear. However Geoffrey we want you to hear these things because the vast majority have had enough of this stupidity and want a proper body to advise you before it is too late and what’s left of our tourist industry has gone forever. It isn’t rocket science just common sense.

Brighton MP urges railways to be brought back into public hands A NEW ERA of public ownership of the railways could save the Treasury more than £1bn a year and deliver improved services and lower rail fares for passengers, says a Brighton MP. In a Private Member’s Bill to be presented in Parliament, Caroline Lucas (Brighton Pavilion) will urge that England’s fragmented railway system be gradually brought back into public hands as franchises expire or companies break the terms of their franchise agreement. The call follows reports last week from the TSSA union that Network Rail bosses could earn more than £10m in bonuses over the next three years under a new scheme – as well as RMT figures showing that 65% of Britain's rail operators are owned by overseas companies, with 60% owned by European state rail arms. Caroline Lucas MP said: “Britain was once a world leader in transport thanks to our hugely successful railways, but today’s privatised system – characterised by poor services and some of the most expensive fares in Europe – is ripping off passengers, harming the economy and failing the environment. “Since privatisation nearly 20 years ago, the cost of train travel has risen by 17% compared to a 7% drop in the cost of motoring, while in recent years the bill for the taxpayer of running the trains has shot up by 2 to 3 times. “Train operating companies are dependent upon public subsidies to run services, so it is
disgraceful that these same companies then turn over an estimated 90% of their operating profits to shareholders (The Great Train Robbery, TUC). “This is a blatant transfer of public money to private interests at the expense of the taxpayer and rail passengers, who are forced to endure the consequences of a deeply complex and fragmented system while ticket prices soar.” The Pavilion MP, whose Private
Members Bill is being by supported by a number of Labour backbenchers and Plaid Cymru MPs, continued: “If the government really wants to make savings and improve our transport network for everyone, it should recognise that privatisation has failed and gradually return the railways to public ownership. “By taking back individual franchises when they expire or when a company fails to meet its franchise conditions, the state could save
over £1 billion a year every year – an amount that can be spent on improving services and reducing rail fares. “The government’s argument that our railways must be privately operated to be effective is blown open by the RMT figures showing that, in fact, that companies backed by other EU states are controlling many of our railways – depriving taxpayers and rail passengers in the UK of the savings created by state ownership.”

Scarecrow success for Carlton Hill School
THE CREATIVITY of Carlton Hill primary school children paid off recently when they made a scarecrow out of discarded CDs for City College Brighton and Hove’s ‘Country Fayre Zone’ which was part of the citywide People’s Day event. With their scarecrow having been judged the best on the day, the pupils, from the school’s ‘Eco Club’, have won the prize of a children’s party for 30 at The Gallery restaurant on Whitecross Street. “We were so impressed with all the work the Carlton Hill children put into their scarecrow and it was such a brilliant, ingenuous way of recycling old CDs”, said City College Event Organiser Kat Ratcliffe. “Their idea was really original and distinctive and was such a big talking point for visitors to the County Fayre Zone so this prize is well deserved.” Carlton Hill Teacher Elizabeth Good said: "The children loved making 'Seedy the Scarecrow' and we've put him up at our Farm to keep the birds off our vegetables. They really enjoy making things out of recycled materials and were delighted to win the competition. Thanks, City College!"

Innovative box scoops award A BOX FILLED WITH FAVOURITE THINGS to help trigger memories for dementia patients has won a top innovation award. Chloe Meineck, a University of Brighton Faculty of Arts graduate, spent two years designing the box which is tailored to play individual patient's favourite music and contains some of their treasured mementoes to stimulate memories and storytelling. Chloe, who has secured funding to develop the Music Memory Box, scooped the Most Innovative Product title in this year's Santander University of Brighton Enterprise Awards. The awards are the culmination of the 2012-13 entrepreneurship programme run by Beepurple, the university's entrepreneurship network for students, graduates and staff to develop business skills and ideas. Awards were presented on Thursday 20 June at the university's Huxley Building in Moulsecoomb, Brighton. A record 67 entries were received this year and each winner received £2,500 from Santander and a package of support from 11 local companies. All 10 shortlisted entrants won £250 from Santander. This year there were £500 awards, funded by the university, for two college projects entries that were developed by teams at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy and Portslade Aldridge Community Academy. They run their own ideas competition and the two teams were chosen by the academies.
Competition organiser Clare Griffiths, the university's business development manager, said: "The Santander University of Brighton Enterprise Awards uncover some of the most outstanding ideas produced by students and graduates. This year's entries were no exception and all had the 'wow' factor." There were joint winners of the Most Entrepreneurial Service title – Marcus Winter, research fellow/postgraduate student from the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, for Ubinote, a technological platform which enables people to comment and rate places and objects to encourage audience engagement, feedback, and communication; and Will Green, Lucas Hobbs, and Jamie Richardson, final year students from the Faculty of Arts for the Sussex Low-Carbon Furniture Range which uses wood destined for landfill to make sustainable, wooden furniture. Winners of the Most Enterprising Community Project award were Abi Jones, postgraduate student of inclusive arts practice, Damian Ellis, graduate from the Faculty of Arts, and Kit Man for Artspace, a community project which delivers arts workshops for adults with mental health issues. Highly commended in this category were David Allistone and Hannah Coxeter, graduates from the Faculty of Arts, for Exploring Senses – CommuniTOY – Exploring Senses CIC, a Brighton-based arts

Rock in the Bog 2013 - Friday 12th & Saturday 13th July 2013 A little bit of History Rock in the Bog began in 2003 when a group of hardened members of Lewes' Cliffe Bonfire Society decided to christen the newly purchased firesite with a camping weekend. In 2004, this time with additional friends, additional supplies, a slightly larger soundsystem and seeing the potential for this to become an annual event, and one that could be opened up to both the wider membership and local community, Rock in the Bog was officially born. Each year since then the event has grown both in size and in popularity and is now not only a major fundraiser for the Society, but also one of the premier music events in the South of England. Despite the success and the potential for continued growth, organisers are determined to keep the event very raw in its nature. Rock in the Bog is a family friendly festival that has been likened to the early (non-commercial) days of Glastonbury, and whilst we shall endeavour to keep improving the site and its facilities, the feel of the event will remain the same. This year we have ten bands over two days. Friday night starts off at 7pm with Scott Free, a Blues/Rock band playing covers from bands like Pink Floyd and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. They’re followed on stage by The Meow Meows a SKA/Soul band from Brighton, and then for the true Madness fans
or those who just like to let their hair down and have fun you’ll love Los Palmas 6 our Headline Band. Saturday kicks off at 2pm with Felix Fables, a four-piece folk-rock band, followed by Elliot’s Sleeping, a classic rock band. Next up are Horseface, a blues-based band, Liquid Fuse, a band that are the definition of Rock ‘N’ Roll and FitsRoy with a style that crosses indie and dance. Our penultimate band of the weekend is Voodoo Vegas with their ability to take influences from Guns N’ Roses and AC/ DC into their own territory. To finish the weekend expect an absolutely stunning tribute to one of the greatest bands on the planet, Kings Ov Leon, as they take you on an epic, exhilarating journey playing your favourite King’s of Leon tracks Camping & Location Free camping is available on site for ticket holders at this years event with basic facilities on site, i.e. toilets and cold water. There are no showers, hot water or electrical hookups. The Rock in the Bog site is located just off the A26 Malling Hill in Lewes, with good access from across Sussex and the Home Counties via the A22, A23, A26 and A27. Sussex Festival of Music acclaimed a great success THE ORGANISERS OF LAST WEEKEND’S first Sussex Festival of Music have been celebrating the success of the event. Promoter, Nick Beck, was very pleased at how well the festival came together. In an interview with Brighton & Hove Independent, Nick said: “I think you can gauge the success of an event like this from three perspectives; did it turn out as we the promoters hoped? The answer is definitely yes. Did the audience enjoy it? Again the answer was yes, although the cold wind during the outdoor events was not so welcome, and finally did the participants enjoy it? Once again we have received ringing endorsements from all those participating, and there were nearly 300 of them!” The event opened with a Jazz Supper attended by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Cllr Denise Cobb. She paid tribute to the event as a welcome addition to the cultural calendar of the city. The Jazz musicians included some of the great names in the Jazz scene, not only in Britain but internationally. Led by Herbie Flowers the others were Mike Piggott on Violin, Mike Hatchard on Keyboard, Steve Wringley on guitar and vocals with Malcolm Mortimore on drums. They played a 2 hour set which was basically a homage to the great Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhart who used to play in the quintet of the Hot Club of France in the 1930s and 40s. The next day, under greyer skies than hoped, the crowd still turned out for an evening concert opened by the Sussex
Harmonisers. There were more than 40 men singing acapella songs from yesteryear. They were followed by the Brighton and Hove Philharmonic Orchestra who played a concert which included a medley of popular classics. They opened with the overture to Forza del destino and continued with scenes from Carmen and The Dan Busters, The conductor was Richard Balcombe, who was born in Eastbourne who said how pleased he was to be conducting the 1st Sussex Festival of Music. Balcombe is a celebrated arranger of music, and as this was being played at the home of Sussex Cricket, he created a special arrangement of the Fantasia of British Sea songs to include Sussex by the Sea. The audience enjoyed singing the words to that and Rule Britannia and clapping the rhythm of Arathusa, before the first half ended with Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance No 1. With even the audience in the flats around joining in with Land of Hope and Glory. The second half included Walton’s Crown Imperial, the Largo from the New World and Blue Danube. By now the audience were getting very cold, but were warmed by a young nameless girl of around 8 or 9 who inspired by the famous Strauss waltz, went on to the grass and proceeded to show off her ballet skills. He received a warm round of applause. The concert ended with the 1812 overture and then a short but spectacular display of fireworks. Like Friday evening, the Sunday opened in the dining room in the Pavilion at the
BrightonandHoveJobs. com Cricket Ground. This time it was a Full English Breakfast accompanied by Herbie Flower’s Sunday friends. This time he and Steve Wrigley were joined by Chris Spedding on guitar, Mark Bassey on trombone, with Charlotte Glasson on Saxaphone and the Saw! Drums were played by Sam Glasson, Charlotte’s brother. The music covered many areas of Jazz as well as reprising some of the music that Herbie had had a part in when they first came out such as Walk on the Wild Side and Nilsson’s ‘Without You’ The mood was set, and both the musicians and good audience stayed for the afternoon entertainment of a Musical Mix. A mix is what it was! The musicians of the morning continued their contribution whilst two very different choirs displayed their variety – The Shoreham Singers by Sea and the Brighton Festival Youth Orchestra. Both were top quality and well received by the choir. Particularly of note during the afternoon was the Wolff Pack, a young jazz band whose ages are under 20 but whose talent was predigeous, especially Beccy Wolff whose mature voice was a reminder of Cleo Laine at

her best. As an alternative to Jazz the concert ended with a very fresh voice from Joe Pickering who was singing from his debut album – Look out for his work, he has a very fine voice indeed. Finally after 6 hours the concert ended with the Folk Tuesdays a young up and coming folk group whose instruments in this ashes summer included a didgeridoo! In closing the Festival Nick Beck confirmed that they would not only be back next year but would be staging weekly indoor events during the winter. If the idea of the festival was to establish the County Ground as a venue for musical entertainment of all sorts, they have succeeded.

Brighton Pride 2013 BRIGHTON’S ANNUAL PRIDE CELEBRATIONS take place on Saturday, 3 August 2013. At the centre of the day is the LGBT Community Parade, which this year has a ‘Gay Icons’ theme to mark the 23rd year of Brighton Pride. The 2013 Preston Park event ‘Icons in the Park’ will deliver an amazing line-up of top artists already including Paloma Faith (DJ set), Alison Moyet; the MKS (the original Sugababes), Stooshe, Ms Dynamite, Freemasons, The Mend, & Class A, plus a sensational Divas show featuring Angie Brown and Kym Mazelle. Also appearing on the Icons Main Stage will be two of the biggest hits from ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent; flamboyant four-piece group The Clubtown Freaks and high camp seven-piece dance troupe The Glambassadors will perform on the Icons Main Stage. The super talented and outrageously styled Clubtown Freaks, featuring club legend Chrissy Darling, were an immediate hit with viewers across the UK and stormed their way to the show’s semi-finals. “Britain’s got talent was a fantastic thrill”, says Chrissy Darling, “but we are even more excited about playing at Brighton Pride’s main stage on the same bill as legends like Alison Moyet, bands like Stooshe and artists such as Paloma
Faith. It’s going to be one amazing day!” The Glambassadors burst onto the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ stage in their hot pants, crop tops and sequinned cat suits, earning themselves a standing ovation from judge David Walliams, before being voted unanimously through to the hit show’s live semi-finals. Pride organisers are reporting strong ticket sales so far; as the biggest line-up ever to play the Park draws in crowds to the re-instated Icons main stage. Pride Director Paul Kemp said: “We are thrilled to have secured our biggest line up ever for the new main stage, with something for everyone. Anyone who takes advantage of the £12.50 early bird ticket offer this year is getting themselves a serious bargain! Advance sales are well up on last year and we are extremely hopeful that this year’s Pride could sell out, raising even more funds for our local community organisations through the £1 per head guaranteed for each ticket sold." £1 for each ticket sold is ring fenced for the Rainbow Fund to distribute through their grants program administered by the Sussex Community Foundation to LGBT organisations, along with any profits after operational costs. Tickets: £9 child, £17.50 Adult, Family Ticket with two children £35 all available from www.brighton-pride.org

A midsummer night's dream...
Charity midsummer ball raises £74,000
IT MAY NOT SEEM as if Brighton has reached midsummer quite yet, considering the strong winds and pouring rain we are currently experiencing, but last Saturday night over 500 people turned out to support one of the season's most dazzling events on Brighton and Hove's social calendar. The Midsummer Ball was held in aid of Hilton in the Community Foundation and The Rockinghorse Appeal. The Hilton Brighton Metropole welcomed celebrities and guests into what might be easily described as a fairytale garden. The enchanting backdrop created a somewhat halcyon mood that allowed guests to mingle and enjoy their champagne cocktails and canapés with a contrasting calm, before they faced the exhilarating evening ahead of them. Guests were then treated to a sumptuous three course meal in luxuriant surroundings whilst being presented with a dance performance from six very accomplished, professional dancers. The brilliant show involved dance routines which symbolised the evening's theme of 50’s Jive. The pace energised the whole audience and the much talked about dance competition began. Each of the six dances included a professional dancer from Brighton Dancing with their protége - a well-known business person from Brighton and Hove. Each contestant had worked extremely hard over the past few months to raise sponsorship for the benefiting charities and although they each had received only five hours of training, they all pulled off a magnificent display of talent. The Midsummer Ball, is styled on a 'Strictly Come Dancing' theme and therefore it was no surprise to see a panel of outspoken
judges. The panel on Saturday included celebrity TV presenters Zoe Ball and Sid Sloane. Whilst CBeebies star Sid is one of the most recognisable faces on television, Zoe, a local resident of Brighton and Hove, is of course extremely well known for her many years on national TV and Radio. She is also well known for her association with dance related TV shows! After co-hosting the BBC reality show Strictly Dance Fever in 2005, she became a contestant on series three of Strictly Come Dancing. Zoe said: "I loved being part of such a fun night; ace dancing and so much money raised for Rockinghorse who do such sterling work looking after our lil peeps - and dancing with Andrew, one of the contestants, made my night - such moves!" The event, which was very kindly sponsored by Skerritts Chartered Financial Planners, welcomed presenters Dan Gasser of Juice 107.2 and ITV announcer, Andrea Fox to declare the winner of the evening's prestigious title. Seizing the first prize was Gary Peters, founder of Brighton and Hove Jobs.com who delivered a superb performance with professional partner Carola DegenerPereira. Gary and Carola had captivated both the judges and audience with their authentic display of rock and roll! The other five contestants, following very closely behind, were Dan Pritchard from The Plough public house in Rottingdean, Julieanne Gilburt of the JAG Gallery, Brighton, Sarah Hopwood, Chair of Rockinghorse charity, Andrew Kay of Latest magazine and Jason Edge of Mayo, Wynne Baxter. As a spectacular auction with outstanding prizes came to a close, the early estimates indicated that the evening had already raised
tens of thousands of pounds and was increasing by the minute. It was not surprising, after watching such upbeat dance moves, that the 500 strong crowd were itching to get on the dance floor. This was made possible by the wonderful Ray Lewis. Ray, former front man of The Drifters, performed live on stage some of the most celebrated sounds of his early days. Ryan Heal, CEO of Rockinghorse Children's Charity expressed his enormous thanks to those who supported the event: "I am overwhelmed by the generosity from everyone there on the night and I wish to say a huge thank you again to our partners at the Hilton Brighton Metropole for working with us on this very successful event.” Speaking for Hilton in the Community Foundation, Ross Mounsey, General Manager at the Metropole, also expressed his gratitude: "The evening was truly wonderful. It was great to see so many guests enjoying themselves whilst helping the children and young people of Brighton and Hove. Thanks to everyone's support, Hilton in the Community Foundation has been able to make a huge difference to the lives of so many children and I would like to thank our guests and our event sponsors Skerritts, for their
overwhelming generosity." The net amount raised will be used to support the work of both charities. The Hilton in the Community Foundation wants to reach out and help as many young people as possible. By investing in improving access to education and investing in the improvement of health care, it seeks to make a big difference in areas where Hilton Worldwide and its hotels operate across Europe. The Foundation is dedicated to creating brighter futures for young people. The focus of its efforts is on supporting children and young people up to the age of 25 with core giving remits to young people and education and young people and health. The Rockinghorse Children's Charity aims to improve the lives of sick children throughout Sussex. As a Brighton based charity, it has been supporting children for over 45 years. Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital, more fondly known as 'The Alex'. The charity also supports the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU), where it raises money for life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment. The charity, which works in partnership with the Alex and TMBU, strives to make services accessible for the many babies, children and teenagers who need them but receives no government funding and so must rely on the support of people such as those guests and sponsors who gave so generously at this year's Midsummer Ball.

Running time: 115 mins Director: Marc Forster Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, Fana Mokoena, Abigail Hargrove, Sterling Jerins, Fabrizio Zacharee Guido, Peter Capaldi, James Badge Dale, David Morse, Matthew Fox, Ludi Boeken Watchable zombie blockbuster with decent special effects, some effectively tense moments and a solid central performance from Brad Pitt, but it’s let down by flagging direction, an emotionally blank script and a kiddiefriendly PG-13 (in the US) certificate that results in a criminal lack of gore. What’s it all about? Directed by Marc Forster and loosely (very loosely) based on the novel by Max Brooks, World War Z stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a Philadelphia-based former UN military officer who’s given up his job to help his wife Karen (Mireille Enos) raise their two young daughters (Abigail Hargrove and Sterling Jerins). However, when a zombie epidemic breaks out in the city, the Lanes are caught up in the ensuing panic and only escape by the skin of their teeth when they’re airlifted to safety by Love Brighton-2106:Layout 1

impressive set-pieces, particularly the opening zombie attack, with Glasgow doing a great job of standing in for Philadelphia. There are also some genuinely tense sequences scattered throughout the film and the script has some amusingly inventive ideas, such as North Korea deciding to solve the problem by pulling out everyone’s teeth (no zombie bites, no epidemic – genius).
Gerry’s former boss (Fana Mokoena). With his family safely aboard an aircraft carrier, Gerry is asked to accompany a mission to identify the source of the zombie outbreak and follows a complex trail to South Korea, Israel and finally Wales. Along the way, he receives help from an Israeli soldier (Daniella Kertesz) and a team of unnamed World Health Organisation scientists (Peter Capaldi, Oliver Bleibtreu, Ruth Negga and Pierfrancesco Favino). The Good Brad Pitt delivers a reliably solid performance 14:36

Worth seeing? World War Z is watchable enough thanks to Pitt’s performance but it’s neither as scary nor as gripping as it should have been.

as Gerry but his movie star presence rather unbalances the film, since you’re never in any doubt as to whether or not the zombies will eat him. By the same token, none of the supporting cast members even get a look-in: Enos and the children are sidelined early on, while more familiar faces like David Morse and Matthew Fox (as an ex-CIA agent and a soldier) have clearly had their screentime reduced (The rewritten and reshot third act cynically attempts to redress this imbalance by casting a series of foreign actors who are big stars in their home countries). On the plus side, Forster orchestrates some
The Bad The film’s biggest problem, at least for genre fans, is that the expected gore has been completely neutered in pursuit of a PG-13 rating (in the US, and it’s a 15 in the UK); there’s at least one scene where something very nasty happens just out of shot and it feels like the filmmakers are actually putting their hands over your eyes. In addition, the film fails to capitalise on its 3D effects (no zombies groping out at you), the pacing flags badly in the middle section and the script fails to connect on an emotional level because you only really get to know one character.

Asian Curry Awards open for nominations
LOVERS of Asian food now can nominate their favourite restaurants for the third Asian Curry Awards (ACA). The awards are open to all Indian and Asian restaurants in Britain. Following 11 regional heats across the country the winners will be announced at a high profile, glittering award dinner being held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London on Sunday 17th November 2013. There will also be awards for the Asian and Oriental Chef of the Year and Young Chef of the Year. The Awards are a joint initiative from the Federation of Bangladeshi Caterers (FoBC) and the Asian Caterers Federation (ACF). A mail shot has been sent inviting over 7,000 restaurateurs, whose origins are from across the Indian sub continent and South East Asia
to take part. “These awards recognise the huge successes made by business owners across the whole of the curry industry and ensure that the key players are lauded for their achievements,” said Yawar Khan, Chairman of the ACA, who added, “Every restaurateur has a unique background and story – awards reflect a lifetime of work, honouring the dedication and commitment of people who ensure continued vibrancy and growth in the sector.” Nominations forms maybe downloaded from the ACA website asiancurryawards. co.uk. The closing date for nominations for Chef of the Year categories is 31st July. Other categories close on 30th September. Short-listed candidates will be announced

Wimbledon is a great British event and our customers really enjoy getting into the swing of it over the fortnight. We think they will love our new and unusual cheese, even if they don’t live anywhere near SW19.’ Made in the village of Cropwell Bishop, with an abundance of strawberries pieces, this fruity mild white stilton is a rich and indulgent treat.

Doting celebrity dads - David Walliams top of the pops
Debenhams uses unairbrushed lingerie images
Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams has officially been hailed as the nation’s bestloved celebrity dad. The telly funnyman, 41, became a father for the first time last month when Dutch model wife Lara Stone gave birth to their son Alfred. Former Little Britain star Walliams beat singer Robbie Williams to claim the title. Ex-Take That star Williams, 39, is dad to daughter Theodora, born to his wife Ayda Field on October last year. Double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah, who became a dad to twins Aisha and Amani in August 2012 with new wife Tania Neil, was third in the Doting Dad poll of 2,000 mums by parenting website Bounty. Lisa Penney, spokeswoman for the Bounty ‘Celebrity Doting Dad Award’ said: “We are thrilled David has won. “Famous dads are often hailed as being the nation’s favourites simply because of their celebrity status and good looks – and not necessarily because of their personality or parenting skills. “Everyday mums no doubt warm to David as he clearly doesn’t take himself or
DEBENHAMS has broken ranks with the rest of the high street by using unairbrushed lingerie photography. This is not the first time Debenhams has shown its commitment to promoting positive body image - the store has run trials with size 16 mannequins in windows, worked with disabled models and paralympians. This move is just another step which highlights the responsible retailer’s long standing commitment to encouraging positive body-image through minimal digital retouching and is an extra element to Debenhams’ inclusivity campaign. The use of some digital photography techniques to create unrealistic body shapes and flawless skin can make men and women feel more insecure about their natural looks and size. The retailers campaign is all about making women feel fabulous about themselves rather than crushing their self-esteem by using false comparisons. Says Sharon Webb, Head of Lingerie buying and design for Debenhams: “We
his fame too seriously and along with his wife Lara, seems to have a down-toearth, fun approach to life, managing to keep their relationship and new baby as private as possible.” London-born Walliams was hailed for his warm personality, comedy genius and huge success as a children’s author. Other celebrity dads to make the top ten were Elton John, Miranda star, Tom Ellis, Jack Osbourne, Chris Evans, Hugh Grant, Mark Owen and Jamie Cullum. Prominent celebrity dads who missed out were Guy Ritchie and Alex Reid. Top Five Celeb Dads 1. David Walliams – Alfred (born May 2013) 2. Robbie Williams – Theodora (Teddy) (born October 2012) 3. Mo Farah -Aisha and Amani (born August 2012) and Rihanna (step daughter) aged eight 4. Elton John – Elijah (born January 2013) and Zachary, aged two 5. Tom Ellis – Marnie Mae (born August 2012) and Florence, aged four
Horoscopes Aries You will need to utilize your people skills this week when dealing with colleagues and peers. You feel someone is feeding you a line but in fact they may be just misinformed so treat them with diplomacy but what they say with caution. You may feel you are giving more than your partner, don’t feel aggrieved their turn will come.
Taurus Feeling a little bit of a square peg in a round hole this week? Or perhaps you have been feeling this way for some time. You now realize that maybe you just have to make too many personal sacrifices to fit in. Try to be true to yourself and if people don’t like it, then it’s their loss. Gemini Emotionally you are sitting at the top of the roller coaster looking at the big drop and understandably are quite fearful. But remember after the drop comes the exhilarating rise. Stick with the plan; maintain your confidence and all should be well. If single remember you are not so much two timing as checking out your options.
Horoscopes from Kimi 28th June - 1st July
Cancer This is a week for treading water; don’t rush into anything too quickly on either the domestic or career front. Better to let things unfold naturally and then you can make a more informed decision on where you are going. Try to spend a little more time with those that have your heart, they need to know you care! Leo Don’t get involved in petty arguments this week, whatever the temptation. If you really have to make a stand and put your head above the parapet. Leave others to fight their own battles. There could be some misunderstanding with a loved one this week. Remember to annunciate your feelings, not everyone reads minds!
Virgo Your future may be in the lap of the gods but your present is and should be firmly under your control. You will need to be proactive this week and not just sit back and let things happen. Because remember the devil makes work for idle hands! Time to reenergize your partnerships by shaking things up a little! Libra Headless chicken springs to mind this week. Don’t be one. You cannot do everything. You may have to make sacrifices or compromises in one area of your life in order to devote time to another. So prioritize. A declaration of love or something that closely resembles one may be made this week. This will both shock and delight. Scorpio You can’t quite believe your luck. You could be invited into that exclusive club you have always wanted to be part of. You are now moving amongst the big boys. This has little to do with luck and everything to do with your strengths try to hang on to that thought as you rub shoulders with the movers and shakers! Sagittarius Domestic issues are at the forefront of your mind this week. It’s decision time. You cannot put things off
want to help customers feel confident about their figures without bombarding them with unattainable body images. “As well as being a positive from a moral point of view, it ticks the economic boxes as well. Millions of pounds a year are spent by organisations retouching perfectly good images. “As a rule we only airbrush minor things like pigmentation or stray hair and rely on the natural beauty of models to make our product look great. Caryn Franklin, fashion commentator and co-founder of All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, says: “Fashion and beauty imagery that is honest, is absolutely crucial for all women to see. Retailers have the power to take a stance on digital manipulation, so, I’m delighted that Debenhams has taken the lead here and customer feedback will no doubt validate this important step.” 70% of women and 40% of men report that they have felt pressure from television and magazines to have a perfect body image.
any longer. So stop procrastinating, gather your thoughts, catalogue the information you have and act. A word of caution, the scientific approach is good but when dealing with the affairs of the heart remember the heart! Capricorn Last week was all about listening this week you need to talk. It may be at work or home but at some point this week and in some place you will need to have “a conversation” in order to straighten things out. Be up front and don’t cloud the issues with too much emotional rhetoric and all will be well. Aquarius Things are still looking good this week and you feel excited by what you can see in the future. There is only one fly in the ointment and that is you may be tempted to spend too much time on those matters that stimulate your interest and not enough on time on other things. Forewarned is forearmed, enjoy your week. Pisces t’s no good sitting on the fence. People on both sides may end up trying to knock you off and then where will you be? You need to make your own mind up with regard to certain issues and then communicate this directly and emphatically. Do this and you will have the support of those who matter most.

Porsche Museum celebrates ‘50 Years of 911’ at Goodwood GOODWOOD is honouring one of the world’s most versatile and popular sports cars – the Porsche 911 – at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, 11 – 14 July. Demonstration runs by historical Porsche road and race cars spanning the seven generations of the 911 will be a highlight of the event. These cars, many of which will instantly evoke fond memories among the thousands of spectators, will be driven by two-time World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl, and two-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours and German Touring Car Champion, Hans-Joachim Stuck, amongst other notable star names. Joining this outstanding selection of 911 icons will also be an incredible line-up of historic Le Mans veterans from the Porsche Museum collection based in Stuttgart. The 911 GT1 '98 and 935/78 ‘Moby Dick’ have been rarely seen in the UK, while the 1987 962 is a frequent visitor to the Earl of March’s West Sussex estate. In addition, the former Porsche factory race drivers Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood will once more be reunited behind the wheel of the legendary Porsche 917 KH, with starting number 23, in which they captured the winner’s trophy in the Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche in 1970; the first of a total of 16 overall victories achieved to date. The delectable 936 Spyder will also
travel to Goodwood; with three victories at Le Mans, it is among the most successful Porsche race cars. The contingent from the Porsche Museum will be completed by a further five star guests. Two examples of the rallying 911; an SC ‘Safari’ and ‘Paris Dakar’ Carrera 4x4; two 911 race cars, a ‘Type 964’ from the Porsche Supercup Championship and ‘Type 996’ 911 GT3 RSR; and the formidable 1,000 hp 917/30 Can-Am car will all be vying for fans’ attention at Goodwood. Alongside the Lohner-Porsche ‘Semper Vivus’ –the world’s first full hybrid automobile and one of the earliest innovations of company founder, Professor Ferdinand Porsche– the Stuttgart factory will also send a very special, original 911 from 1967 to Goodwood. As part of an innovative ‘Follow the 911’ campaign, this car has been engaged as a rolling ambassador for Porsche at various international events, trade fairs, historic rallies and racing events on five continents since the start of the year. Further details regarding the involvement of Porsche in the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and more information about the wider event itself, will be confirmed over the coming weeks. The Porsche Museum With an extensive special exhibition in its distinctive building in StuttgartZuffenhausen, Germany, the Porsche
Museum is celebrating the 911 anniversary until September 29. More than 40 different 911 versions tell the unique and exciting story of this sports car model range alongside the original 911 and seven 911 generations. This includes a number of rare production and racing cars being presented to the public for the first time. The Porsche Museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday to
Sunday. Admission is eight euro for adults. Reduced price tickets cost four euro. Drivers of a 911 plus one accompanying person, upon presentation of the vehicle registration at the box office of the Porsche Museum, have free admission from June 4 to September 29, 2013. The same applies to visitors who were born in 1963, and can prove it by presenting their ID.
Check your tyres before you make tracks this summer
Renew car cover early to avoid last minute price hikes
FOLLOWING last year’s UK summer, which proved to be the wettest on record, Micheldever Tyre Services/Protyre is advising motorists before they set off on a summer break to check their tyres to be safe and secure on the road. Research has shown that most drivers fear skidding on wet roads and with UK roads wet at least 40% of the time, there is always the danger of aquaplaning – this is when a layer of water builds up between the tyre and the road surface leading to a possible dangerous loss of traction and steering control. Aquaplaning is more likely to happen when tyres wear down to close, or below, the legal minimum of 1.6mm. Clearly the greater the tread depth the less likely it is that aquaplaning will occur. If a car does aquaplane, the best advice is stay calm, come off the accelerator and don’t touch the brake pedal or try to turn the steering. As the speed decreases the tyre will start to bite through the film of water and control can be regained. Micheldever/Protyre is also offering the following advice to motorists before they set off for a summer motoring break. 1. Check and adjust tyre pressures as recommended in the car’s handbook. Remember if you are carrying additional loads then tyre pressure may have to be adjusted. Correctly inflated tyres not only reduce stopping distances and increase levels of grip, but also improve fuel consumption
DRIVERS who leave it to the last minute to renew their car insurance policy risk being stung by last minute premium price hikes, according to analysis from MoneySupermarket. The comparison site analysed almost 13 million quotes from motorists shopping around to renew their car insurance. It found drivers can save up to £33 - or seven per cent - if they buy their car insurance with more than two weeks to go on their policy, compared to on the actual day of renewal. The analysis showed if there are more than two weeks to go on a policy, at renewal motorists will pay £434 on average, which creeps up to £448 on average with one-two weeks to go, increasing further to £452 on average during the last week of the policy. On the actual day of renewal, the cost of cover jumps to £467 on average. Overall the research found the UK's drivers stand to save more than £500 million collectively, by running their renewal quote as early as possible. The research also found UK motorists are most likely to leave searching for car insurance quotes until the week their policy is due to expire, with 55 per cent beginning their search with under a week to go. This includes almost two fifths (18 per cent) who are
and reduce CO2 emissions. 2. Tread depth. As already indicated reduced tread depth can lead to problems with grip in the wet. The law requires a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across three quarters of the width of the tyre. To be safe however Micheldever recommends that driver consider changing tyres at between 2.5 and 3mm. 3. Check for uneven wear to ensure that wheel alignment and tyre balance are correct. Failure to do this can lead to premature replacement and possible vibrations through the steering. 4. Check for general tyre condition. Remove stones and other objects from the tyre tread and clean dirt from around the valve and ensure that dust caps are fitted. 5. Check tyre for age. This is a check not normally carried out by motorists but is important. Tyres over 8 years old should be replaced. Check the tyre sidewall for the code to identify when the tyre was produced.
last minute buyers, choosing to leave it until the day their policy lapses to renew. Almost a third (30 per cent) are much more organised and start thinking about renewing with more than two weeks to go on their policy, and a fifth (15 per cent) begin to look for new quotes with one to two weeks left. Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket said: "Our analysis clearly shows that when it comes to renewal time, the early bird really does catch the worm, with renewal premium prices likely to be lower. Those who do leave it to the last minute are often viewed by some insurers to be a greater risk so they will price accordingly. Planning ahead is key to making significant savings on your car insurance as insurers tend to change pricing daily. Many do allow you to lock in your quote for 30 days, leaving you free to continue shopping around. "There are also significant savings to be made by not settling for your renewal quote and by taking the time to shop around alternative providers, running an early quote and locking in your best price allows you to look into the options available before your policy renewal date. Motorists can save £405 on average by shopping around for their insurance premiums through MoneySupermarket."

Cricket Alexia Walker becomes most capped Womens player SUSSEX WOMEN'S ALL-ROUNDER Alexia Walker recently became the most capped player ever for the Sussex Women when she played against Kent on Bank Holiday Monday, as she has now amassed 112 caps. 30 year-old Walker has been playing for Sussex for over 20 years, where she first played at Junior County level before being selected for the senior squad in her teenage years. She has won the County Championship five times, twice as captain and last year was involved in the T20 win. Alexia also plays an important role off the pitch with the Sussex Women’s Cricket Association, where she is one of the lead coaches for the County Girls squads, as well as being a Director of the Sussex Cricket Board. She will be soon taking on the role as Director of Cricket at the Aldridge Cricket Academy with the two Brighton Academies, BACA and PACA. She continues to be a vital member of the Sussex Women’s side, as a pace bowler, top-order batsman and currently one of the leading catchers in the side, and in no way does it look as though she will be stopping soon which is good for Sussex as her next

target is to reach 150 caps. Sussex Women’s coach and Director of Sussex Women’s Cricket, Charlotte Burton said: “It is a fantastic achievement that Alexia has become the most capped player for Sussex. She has done a lot for Sussex over the years, not just on the pitch but also off it and I am so pleased for her. It is a great accolade for Alexia to achieve and I know she has quite a few more years left in her to try and reach 150 caps. "She puts in everything to play for Sussex, you can always rely on her to give 110% as it means a lot to her to represent the County and the girls coming through can see that when they play in the same team as her or when she coaches them. She is a good role-model for the girls who aspire to play Women’s Cricket for Sussex.”

Brighton insist Gus Poyet was told about his impending sacking BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION have denied claims from Gus Poyet that the first he knew about his sacking was from a television production team. Poyet was working as a pundit on the Confederations Cup when news of his dismissal broke last week. The Uruguayan, who is appealing his sacking for an unspecified breach of discipline, said on air he "had no communication, no texts, no e-mail" from the Championship club. But a statement on the Brighton website disputed Poyet's version of events. It read: "In relation to comments made by Gus Poyet, the club would like to point out that its disciplinary panel considered the matter on the afternoon of Friday June 21 and for most of Saturday June 22. "The club spent much of Sunday June 23 in discussion with Gus and his representatives. "For legal reasons we cannot say anything about the content of those discussions but Gus was well aware, before he appeared on the BBC, that his dismissal was pending. "Given Gus has a right to appeal the
decision to dismiss him, the club will not be making any further comment on this matter at this time." The club have yet to reveal what their reasons were for suspending and then sacking the Uruguayan. After the game, the 45-year-old said he intended to appeal. "From what I read from the statement, I am unemployed," he said. "My idea now is to appeal and get back to the job I've been doing until 7.30. "I can't go into details of the future. It's just a matter of being calm and make sure you make the right decision. "I've been trying to establish in the last 45 minutes what my rights are now." At half-time, Poyet told BBC presenter Mark Chapman: "I'm probably the first to be in this position. Everyone can make their own conclusions about the way I have been informed by you. "I think the BBC got a great story forever really because a manager getting the information that he's been released from his employment during the time of a programme
Gus Poyet still has the right to appeal the decision

Brighton released a statement on their website at 19:14 BST on Sunday 23 June. Poyet said he received an email from the club at 21:03 BST. Upon hearing Poyet’s claims, the Brighton
statement said Poyet had been "informed by the club's internal disciplinary panel" he was no longer manager of the club. It added: "This followed his suspension, an investigation, and a subsequent formal disciplinary process. "In line with the club's own procedures, and UK employment law, Mr Poyet now has a right of appeal."

Shorey joins Albion for pre-season training NICKY SHOREY has joined Brighton and Hove Albion for preseason training ahead of a possible move to the Amex Stadium. Shorey is available on a free transfer after leaving Reading earlier this summer and he is looking for a new club. Brighton are in the market for a new left-back having seen Wayne Bridge join Reading after a successful spell on loan from Manchester City last season and also allowing Marcos Painter to leave the club. Ironically Brighton were believed to be keen on Shorey last summer before they signed Bridge and they have now rekindled their interest in the full-back. Shorey will spend a few weeks training at Brighton in the hope of securing a move to the club, but any deal has as yet been held up due to the Seagulls search for a new manager following the sacking of Gus Poyet last week.
