Stonewall recognition for city schools challenging homophobia BRIGHTON AND HOVE City Council has been named as the second-best local authority in the country for challenging homophobia in schools and celebrating difference. Stonewall, the national charity, has described the council’s work in this area as innovative and original - praising the successful partnership work delivered in schools with the city’s Allsorts Youth Project. Young people from Allsorts have worked with the council’s education team to deliver training to peer-mentors and staff. They have also delivered lessons and assemblies that challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. Secondary schools have been supported to develop systems that effectively support lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender young people. This year Allsorts also successfully launched a Children and Young People’s Day, specifically aimed at promoting positive images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people. Councillor Ruth Buckley, the deputy chair of the council’s children and young people committee welcomed the national recognition. She said: “We’ve been a leading authority nationally for the three years this award has been running.

“I’m proud that our schools take homophobia, biphobia and transphobia so seriously and delighted that our work with Allsorts Youth Project is continuing to support their efforts. This month we are launching a Trans Inclusion Toolkit for Schools to further improve support for transgender young people." Jess Woods, the Allsorts youth project director, said: “We are thrilled that the council has yet again done so brilliantly in the Stonewall index. This is a great achievement. Congratulations to everyone at the council and all our wonderful LGBT-inclusive schools.” Wes Streeting, Stonewall’s head of education said: “Homophobic bullying has a detrimental impact on the attendance, achievement and life chances of young people. “So it’s fantastic to see the work of Brighton and Hove City Council highlighted through the Index to inspire others to take action to make schools a safe and supportive place to help all young

people to achieve their potential.” For more information about the Allsorts Youth Project, visit: www.allsortsyouth.org.uk

Ed Miliband to visit Blatchington Mill Ed Miliband will visit Blatchington Mill School today (Friday) to discuss antihomophobic bullying strategies. He will first meet parents before a question-and-answer session - on a wide range of topics - with students in the school's Windmill Theatre. The Labour Party leader's visit will coincide with three student commissioners from Blatchington Mill School travelling to London to attend a Stonewall conference, which will also be attended by Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Education. The three students, aged 13 and 14, will receive training on how to lead antibullying initiatives in school - as well as how to address and challenge homophobic language and bullying. Blatchington Mill School was reported as "outstanding" by Ofsted for its approach to behaviour and safety, including its success in tackling LGBT issues A school spokesperson said: "While student attainment and progress are, of course, a key school priority, student wellbeing is vital so all students are happy and then able to learn. "Blatchington Mill is determined to remove barriers to learning for all our students; our ethos is one of celebrating diversity and challenging prejudice."

Lift-off for property Continued from page 1 ...highlighted the improvement as “patchy”. Some sellers of the most expensive properties accepted prices lower than advertised. For example, five-bedroom 41 The Cliff was advertised at £1,595,000 last October, but sold seven months later for £1,465,000; seven-bedroom 28 Clifton Road, Brighton BN1 3HN was on the market for £1,350,00, before changing hands for £1,250,00.

The most expensive home sold this year - 21A Lloyd Road, Hove, architecturallydesigned and built by its property-developer owner – was put on the market initially for £3 million in August 2010. It was featured by the Wall Street Journal in April last year, when the asking price was $3.6 million (£2.4 million). And it was listed last February for £1.95 million, before finally selling on April 30 for £1,825,000.

Tweets of the Week!

Making our roads safer – for everyone

Tweets are from Brighton & Hove people or about the area (Some tweets may contain errors) @HayleyRowthornW All I want is for someone to take me on a day trip to Brighton sea life centre @MindCharity If you’re in Brighton on Friday check out the Speakeasy night: jazz & burlesque galore in aid of better mental health @garypetersICP The 2013 #Brighton marathon, which had over 9,000 runners, has been independently assessed to have put over £6m into the local economy!

Jason Kitcat LAST YEAR, the number of casualties on UK roads dropped to its lowest since records began, but deaths and injuries among cyclists rose sharply. The data, however, for Brighton and Hove shows a welcome improvement in road safety. Overall, we’ve seen a 12 per cent reduction in the number of road collisions and casualties since 2010. And while the number of cyclists has increased, the number of casualties has stayed stable.

Two-metre-wide cycle lane in both directions due to be constructed during Lewes Road improvements

@ThePennyDrops First Green Party run council in the country fails the “green” test. CO2 emissions up, recycling down in #Brighton & #Hove.

Cycling has really taken off in the city in recent years. The 2011 census data showed that the numbers cycling to work in Brighton and Hove more than doubled over the previous decade. While the increase is good news, measures to improve safety on our streets are crucial. Introducing slower traffic speeds, as we’ve done in residential areas in the city centre, is a simple way of saving lives and making our streets better for all. Not only do drivers have more time to react to events on the road, but also a pedestrian is six times more likely to survive being hit by a car at 20mph than at 30mph.

@ViviannaMakeup Only in Brighton would there be a beachfront promenade party bashing out Kanye at 3am.

Major schemes to improve key routes and junctions will help to make our streets safer for all residents. For example, changes separating traffic and improving pedestrian crossings on the Old Shoreham Road, and the current work on the Lewes Road, will improve the safety for all road-users. And the Seven Dials redesign project will slow traffic speeds around this junction, as well as introduce new zebra-crossings for pedestrians. Work is ongoing, but feedback from pedestrians, cyclist and drivers is already positive. We also run a range of awareness

campaigns about sharing road space, visibility (especially during the winter months), and safety training courses. With more of us sharing the roads, we hope that these schemes will help make them safer for everyone - however we choose to travel. What are your views on traffic schemes and road safety? Plaque marks the spot where Constable stayed A BLUE plaque is being unveiled at a house where John Constable is believed to have lived and worked. Richard Constable, great-great-grandson of the English Romantic painter, will unveil the plaque in a ceremony today (Friday). It was known that Constable (1776-1837) was productive and successful during his stay in Brighton - although the precise whereabouts of his “painting room” remained a mystery. He is thought to have produced about 200 works of art from 1824 to 1828, while staying at "9 Mrs Sober’s Gardens". While there, he painted West Blatchington windmill in Blatchington as well as The Chain Pier, Brighton Beach, and a number of seascapes. New research, however, established the link between Constable’s famous address and the deeds to houses in what is now Sillwood Road, Brighton. The findings were initially published earlier this year in an article in The Burlington Magazine, the leading monthly publication devoted to the fine and decorative arts.

The article was co-authored by Peter Harrap, an artist who two years ago moved to 11 Sillwood Road, where the plaque will be unveiled at 1pm today. The street name and number of the little Regency house – along with its façade - have all been altered, but the internal layout has been unchanged since 1823. Mr Harrap now uses Constable’s lightfilled top-floor painting room as a studio – sharing it with his partner, Natasha Kissell, who is also an artist, He plans to curate an exhibition “John Constable in Brighton” from April to October 2017 at Brighton Museum.

Anorak Corner Did you know? A taster of Brighton facts and figures... Churchill Square was originally built in the 1960s as an open-air, multi-level pedestrianised shopping centre, but was rebuilt and enlarged thirty years later. Standard Life Investments bought the entire site in the early 1990s, and undertook a comprehensive redevelopment of the 470,000 square foot centre. The work was completed in 1998, when it was reopened fully let.

Striking greenkeepers call in ACAS

UNION OFFICIALS are appealing to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) in a bid to solve a longrunning dispute involving greenkeepers at two golf courses. The announcement was made after the second one-day strike yesterday (Thursday) by seven members of the GMB and Unison at the Hollingbury and Waterhall courses. Unions complain that Mytime Active - a social enterprise that has managed the

courses on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council for the last three years - is cutting allowances, including unsocial hours and overtime. They say this will mean a £4,000 pay cut for workers whose basic wages are put at £18,000. Mytime Active has said the Brighton courses are not performing as profitably as others elsewhere. It claims significant service efficiencies are needed to help develop the courses for the community now and for future generations.

It depends on which part of Africa you are travelling to. Malaria is widespread in many tropical and subtropical countries and is a serious and sometimes fatal disease. Malaria is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that spread malaria are most active between dusk and dawn. Malaria is not present in the UK-however, every year approximately 1600 people catch malaria on a trip abroad. You cannot be vaccinated against malaria, but it is very preventable and you can protect yourself by being: A – Aware of the risk- make sure you know if the area you are visiting has a malaria risk. Speak to your travel health advisor or visit our website to get up- to- date malaria recommendations. B – Bite avoidance- avoid mosquito bites by using an effective insect repellent. C – Compliance – seek medical advice before travel to obtain the correct anti- malarial tablets. Make sure you take them as prescribed and complete the course to reduce your risk of contracting malaria. D – Diagnosis- If malaria symptoms present, a medical professional should be consulted as quickly as possible for prompt treatment. Symptoms of malaria can be very similar to flu and include a high temperature, sweats and chills, muscle pains, headaches, diarrhoea and a cough. Symptoms can be present for up to a year after travelling to a malaria region. If you think you may have malaria you need to SEEK URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION. Tell your healthcare professional that you have visited a malarial area. To book an appointment to purchase malaria tablets please call Sussex Travel Clinic on 01273 749100.

Urgent action needed on “illegal” air quality

AIR-QUALITY in the city centre is nearly twice the legal limit because of traffic pollution, according to environmental campaigners. Members of Brighton and Hove Friends of the Earth (BHFOE) donned air-filter breathing masks to make their point at a demonstration near the Clock Tower in

central Brighton. Five out of the top 10 worst-polluted parts of the city are reported to be near the citycentre landmark. Demonstrators said the long-term legal limit for nitrogen dioxide is 40 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3); in the middle of North St, they claimed it is 79 µg/m3.

Their protest marked the start of a campaign for urgent action - nine years after an air-quality management area (AQMA) was declared in the city. Chris Todd, a leading BHFOE activist, unveiled an initial fivepoint plan, intended as a catalyst for further action by Brighton and Hove City Council. Mr Todd called for traffic lights near the Clock Tower to be altered to reduce hold-ups to buses, taxis and cycles - and to remove all private cars from the area. He said the relatively small number of cars were the cause of significant congestion, particularly for buses and taxis from the railway station. "This is not only bad for air pollution but it also increases costs for bus and taxi operators," Mr Todd said. "Air pollution is a largely invisible problem. Yet, in the UK, it causes thousands of premature deaths every year. It’s a national disgrace that so little has been done to address this problem.” The environmental pressure group listed five proposals that it said would improve air quality, reduce public transport costs, and make it easier and more pleasant for shoppers to move between Churchill Square and The Lanes: • Install a left turn (green light) for

westbound traffic at the Dyke Rd/Western Rd junction when eastbound traffic is released from Western Rd; • Release westbound traffic at the Clock Tower earlier; • Remove private vehicles from the Clock Tower, particularly travelling north and south, for which there is said to be no strategic need; • Create restrictions for vehicles entering this area; campaigners suggest the city council might require bus operators to remove, or upgrade, all buses to meet more stringent emission standards; Allow the licensing of electric taxis and examine the feasibility of only allowing electric taxis at the Clock Tower rank. Councillors meet next week to discuss a review of the AQMA, with the intention of agreeing a new air-quality plan. A report, to be considered by the city council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee on Tuesday, states: “Whilst there has been long term improvements in levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) outside of the city centre, concentrations of NO2 continue to remain above the legal limits within a few metres of narrow roads in central Brighton, Portslade and Rottingdean High Street.” Officers are considering implications for the licensing of taxis, including licensing smaller petrol-driven and hybrid cars – and, for the first time, electric vehicles.

Charity launches film in bid to win lottery award By Susanna Reid BRIGHTON Housing Trust (BHT) has launched a film to encourage people to vote for them to win the Best Voluntary Group category of the National Lottery Awards 2013. The Accommodation for Work Project has made it to the finals of the awards and needs to receive the most votes from the public to win the title. The film shows three people who have benefited from the BHT project over the last year.

They share their stories of homelessness and how the project has helped them to find employment and to move forward to more positive futures. Bernadette Lynch, project manager for Accommodation for Work, said: “We are so excited to reach the finals of the National Lottery Awards. “Since the project started in 2010, we have worked with 83 people to improve their skills and work-experience through training, volunteering and employment opportunities. It

has been fantastic to see so many people turn their lives around. “We are the only project in Sussex in the finals. It’s easy to vote, so we're hoping people support us, as it would be a fantastic reward for everyone involved in the project to receive national recognition for their hard work.” The winners of the Best Voluntary Group category will receive £2,000 and will appear on BBC One's "The One Show". BHT’s Accommodation for Work Project provides housing and support for homeless

people who want to work, but are struggling with the devastating impact of homelessness. The only project of its kind in the UK, it offers a residential programme of workfocused support for homeless people who are working, volunteering or pursuing training/ qualifications. New principal for Brighton Aldridge Community Academy

BRIGHTON ALDRIDGE Community Academy has appointed a new principal. Dylan Davies, currently senior viceprincipal at the City of London Academy

in Southwark - which he joined nine years ago as head of science - will take over at the academy in Falmer at the beginning of next year. Meanwhile, Michael Brett will continue to serve as interim principal, following his appointment in May. Sir Rod Aldridge, chairman of the academy's sponsor, the Aldridge Foundation, said: “Dylan Davies brings experience and ideas of working in a community-focused academy and is passionate about developing inclusive and engaging teaching, promoting the development of young people to become creative, innovative, successful and responsible citizens.”

Mr Davies said he had enjoyed meeting students, staff and governors at the academy during the interview process. “I was made to feel very much a part of the school from the moment I entered the building and was immediately impressed by the academy’s calm, positive and studious ethos," he said. “I met many happy young people and know I am lucky to have been chosen to be the next principal of such an exciting and forward-thinking school.” Philomena (Phil) Hogg - who joined the academy, formerly Falmer High School, in 2009 - announced her intention to retire as principal in autumn last year. She is due to leave at the end of this term.

This bodge-up has turned our city into a building site Mike Holland HAVING spent most of my life involved in construction and restoration of old buildings, I have developed a sort of sixth sense when a job is not going as perhaps it should. In other words - just as people in other walks of life know, or should know, their trade or profession - I can walk on site and know whether I am dealing with a professional contractor or an out-and-out bodger. I have long extolled the virtues of encouraging tradesmen to keep a job clean and tidy; to finish a task, where possible, the same day in order to keep things neat; and to take a pride in their work. I am not alone in this and anyone worth their salt in construction thinks the same way. I see no good reason why the same ethos should not be applied in all walks of life. If, for instance, you make shoddy clothes, it is unlikely you will have many customers. The same applies to food: if it doesn’t taste too good and the premises look unkempt, then it’s unlikely you will sell much. The same should apply to all walks of life, including

public services, (which in many cases work and serve us well). Why then does Brighton and Hove resemble an unfinished building site? Is this because we are being managed by people who can perhaps be described, politely, as unfit for purpose? Why is it that there has seemingly been no proper joinedup thinking? Why could an overall scheme to improve our city not have been prepared by proper specialist teams of consultants and presented to the electorate? We would then all have had time to comment on these proposals and the ensuing works carried out in a cohesive workmanlike manner to a proper city plan that did not interfere with our summer trade. Is that really too much to ask? Major changes have taken place to our infrastructure and we - the electorate and council-tax-paying public - should have been properly consulted before these major works commenced and our views listened to. With proper consultation conducted by proper external consultants, would we really be carrying out some of the so-called improvements we are seeing imposed upon us right across the city? Why, for instance, when most agree that more pedestrian areas around the Lanes are desirable and will help boost our dwindling tourist market, are our council spending a pathetic £50,000 on bollards etc. While in the Lewes Road area,

they are spending £6.4 million on so-called “improvements” that very few right-minded people see any need for whatsoever. It seems that of the total £6.4 million, £3.3 million is being spent on yet more cycle and bus lanes. And a whopping £3.1 million is being frittered away on so-called “soft measures” designed to encourage residents of the area’s 32,000 homes to change their travel habits. You really couldn’t make it up in the wildest fictional dream. Imagine what we could have done with that £3.1 million around the Lanes. Then imagine what we could have done with the £6.4 million.

Going back to my original point of knowing when you have got something wrong, surely it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to fathom this one out. You have got it wrong, chaps, and I am afraid we are beyond the point of no return. It will take an awful lot to sort out this bodge-up and that’s for sure. I hope the next Town Hall incumbents are up to it. Do you agree with Mike Holland? Let us know your thoughts. Email: views@ brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk. Twitter: @BrightonIndy

The Brighton Digital Festival THE BRIGHTON Digital Festival - the city’s largest celebration of digital arts and culture will return for its third year in September. And organisers of the month-long festival are today announcing a new media partnership with the Brighton & Hove Independent. The partnership, the first of its kind in the festival's history, is aimed at building record audiences for this year's events. The Brighton Digital Festival, a celebration of international digital culture, incorporates a rich blend of exhibitions, performances, conferences, meet-ups, workshops and outdoor events in venues across the city. Last year, more than 100 events - in more than 45 spaces - attracted more than 25,000 people. With 70 events already registered for this year, festival organisers are confident of attracting an even bigger and more diverse audience. Programme highlights include wellestablished conferences such as dConstruct, alongside family-friendly events that include the UK’s fastest-growing Mini Maker Faire - which returns to the Brighton Dome on September 7 and 8. Literature in the digital age will also be well represented, as will a rich programme of

digital photography events by Photoworks and an exciting film programme curated by Lighthouse Arts. The hugely-successful Open Studios experience will also return this year, as the city’s diverse range of digital agencies and business open their doors to the public. Tom Bailey, Brighton Digital Festival Manager, said: “We are thrilled to have the Brighton & Hove Independent on board to help us promote this year’s festival. "With such a huge variety of events scheduled across September, we are looking forward to welcoming a more diverse and exciting audience than ever before.” Mark Ansell, managing director of Brighton & Hove independent, said the newspaper's new editorial director, Greg Hadfield, a digital entrepreneur and former Fleet Street journalist, would be responsible for comprehensive editorial coverage of all aspects of this year's festival. Mr Ansell said: “Brighton and Hove is a hub for digital culture and we are delighted to support what is a remarkable and innovative event. With such a diverse range of events, exhibitions and conference, I’m certain there’s a Brighton Digital Festival event to suit all of our readers.” For all of the latest news, announcements and updates, visit the Brighton Digital Festival website: www. brightondigitalfestival.co.uk

The Brighton & Hove Living Wage

BRIGHTON & HOVE Independent is proud to announce that it has been named as the official print media partner for the Brighton Living Wage Campaign. Launched in 2012, the campaign aims at encouraging local businesses voluntarily to pay all employees at least £7.45 an hour. Set independently and updated annually, the Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the United Kingdom and is the amount that allows a person to live - rather than just survive. As well as being a member of the Living

Wage itself, Brighton & Hove Independent is committed to increasing awareness of the campaign and encouraging other local businesses to join many others that already have. Mark Ansell, managing director of Brighton & Hove Independent, said: “I feel very passionately about the campaign, because I am a strong believer that one motivated member of staff is worth five who are demotivated. A great way to motivate staff is to pay them so they can afford a decent living locally and make them feel appreciated by the company for which they work. Increased productivity can only be an advantage to all local businesses.” Sarah Springford, director of Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce said: “We are delighted to have Brighton & Hove Independent as our media partner for the Living Wage Campaign. The newspaper will help us to build awareness of the campaign and how it will benefit those of us that live and work in the city. "The business community has been very supportive and we are really pleased to have had over 75 signed up so far.”

Communal bins to boost recycling – but cut parking spaces By Susanna Reid

Gary Peters

THREE of Sussex’s leading business executives will be offering themselves as slaves at Ladies' Day at Sussex County Cricket Ground. Guests attending will have the chance to bid for the services of: Gary Peters, founder of award-winning Brighton&HoveJobs.com (pictured); Ryan Heal, chief executive of Rockinghorse, the Brighton-based children's charity; and Mark Ansell, managing director of Brighton & Hove Independent. All proceeds raised at the event on Friday, July 19 will go to Rockinghorse. Mr Peters said: “It's going to be a great day out and I’m really looking forward to raising money for such a worthy cause. It's going to be a lot of fun.” Tickets for a three-course meal with drinks cost £70; a drinks reception begins at noon. For tickets, telephone 0844 264 0202 or visit: www.sussexcricket.co.uk.

COMMUNAL recycling is likely to be introduced across much of the city centre in an effort to increase recycling rates. Brighton and Hove City Council officials say residents favour scrapping kerbside black boxes and installing larger strategically-placed collection points. They report that trials have shown collection of materials would increase by as much as 70 per cent. If approved next week, the aim is to implement the scheme between October and March 2014. Some 272 parking spaces would be lost. The decision would also save money, to pay for further incentives for residents to recycle as well as to enable donations to selected local charities and community projects under a "community rewards" initiative. The scheme would be extended to around 32,000 homes in the city centre, ending the need for black boxes cluttering pavements and doorsteps. It would also stop passers-by using them as bins, contaminating contents and causing wind-blown litter. Instead, materials would be collected in on-street communal bins similar to, but smaller than, current communal waste bins. Four in five of people responding to consultations said they were willing to use the bins; nearly two in three (65 per cent) approved of their proposed locations.

Officers are recommending the full extension to the city council's environment committee on Tuesday (July 9). A trial last year - involving more than 3,000 homes in Brunswick and Adelaide saw recycling rates rise from 12.5 per cent to 21 per cent. Funding of £840,000 over six years will come from a government scheme to help councils improve waste collection and recycling services. The scheme is also expected to save about £516,000 over the six years - because it uses mechanised loading of vehicles and fewer staff. A council report recommends introducing an incentive scheme to encourage people to use the new bins. Incentives could include discount vouchers for shops and cafes being handed out at bin sites to those bringing materials.

These could be paid for by savings from increased recycling; every tonne recycled saves the council £44. Another idea is for part of the savings to be passed on to local charities in the form of grants. Up to £10,000 could be set aside, with up to three charities benefiting each year. Councillor Pete West, chair of the environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “Our pilot of this new system has already shown it to be a very good way to get increased recycling, cleaner streets and less damage to the environment.” Do you agree with communal recycling bins? Game, set, MATCH! Wimbledon is here again making me think about strawberries and cream, the sound of tennis balls hitting rackets, the sun and of course the rain! Wimbledon is also about winning. The victors will parade their cups and shields to loud applause. After years of training and competition they will have won the most prestigious tournament in tennis. Many people believe that they can win when it comes to resolving financial issues upon the breakdown of their relationships. A court battle, it is thought, will get the best possible financial outcome and that there will be a winner and a loser. The reality is that the court does all it can to award a fair financial outcome and to put the

children first. There aren’t any winners but the couple is forced to try to beat each other at a game that cannot be won. This is why I set up O’Sullivan Family Law to help people use dispute resolution processes that avoid court. Mediation and Collaborative practice help couples reach fair settlements without needing to fight it out.

Revealed: how to make the most of democracy IN FIFTH-CENTURY Athens, democracy was exercised and experienced as a way of life. But even in the age of Pericles, the Athenians faced one of the biggest problems still encountered by modern democracies: encouraging enough people to take part to ensure everyone's views and needs were represented. And that's the starting point for Dan Jellinek, a Brighton-based journalist, who is author of the newly-published People Power: A User's Guide to Democracy (Bantam Press, £14.99). The complaints from disengaged citizens are so common they are cliché: "I'm not going to bother voting for anyone this time," they say. "They are all as bad as each other. What's the point?" Jellinek describes as "heart-breaking" the casual readiness of so many of today's citizens to toss away one of our most precious possessions: the right to vote: "That is to vastly overreact to whatever anger you might have about politicians - like burning down a house because you don't like some of the furniture in it." And so he embarks on a 328-page user's guide to every aspect of our democracy, how we can make our voices heard, and how we can try to change things for the better. This is not a dry, academic textbook. Nor is it fuelled by party-political vitriol. Its target audience is you and me, and everyone who cares about the country - and the city - they live

in. And indeed the planet we live on. Jellinek is well-placed to write such an accessible and informative guide. In his early career, he covered both Westminster and Brussels for the Local Government Chronicle, the UK’s leading news publication for local councils.

In 2001 he co-founded VoxPolitics, the UK’s first think-tank tracking the use of new technologies in political campaigning. More recently, he has worked for the Parliamentary IT Committee, briefing MPs and Peers on key policy issues such as the role of the internet in pro-democracy struggles in the Middle East. Married with two children, aged 15 and 13,

he dedicates his book to his family: "To Gillian, Ezra and Frida - my people, my power." And that is why this book is important. In truth, we are all interested in politics; we all have an interest – if only a self-interest –in the political processes that comprise democracy. "Everyone cares about local schools and hospitals.” Jellinek explains. “Everyone has experience of them, or they know people who work in them." Of course, democracy is not perfect. It never will be. "Democracy is the worst form of government," Winston Churchill famously said, "except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." To encourage democratic participation, it is important to explain how our democracy works, with all its strengths and weaknesses, achievements and archaisms, complexities and flaws. This book does that. Its message is clear: Stand up and be counted. The power is in your hands. Small actions can bring about big changes - to your own life, and to the lives of your fellow citizens. The battle for “M Greg Hadfield BY-ELECTIONS are not important. The results are meaningless. Just ask any losing candidate! The truth, of course, is more complex. And next week’s by-election in Hanover and Elm Grove – known as “muesli mountain” - is a case in point. If the Green Party holds onto the heartland seat, they will silently breathe a collective sigh of relief. Despite defending a majority of 1,000 or more, victory will be heralded as vindication – after all the travails of their first two years grasping at the levers of power. For Labour, a distant second last time, the by-election will be the first real test of a beefed-up team of organisers and activists working behind the scenes with Warren Morgan, new leader of Labour Group on the city council. If Labour fail to make a mark, it will bode ill for the “real” fight in May 2015 – the date for a general election in the city’s three constituencies (one Green; two Conservative) as well as all 54 council seats. With more than 15 years’ experience in the voluntary sector and a founder of the local Coats for Kids charity, Emma Daniel - a first-time candidate - provides Labour with a younger, fresher face. A practised communicator, she is keen to promote positive policies: local services under community control, park-and-ride, licensing private landlords, tackling debt - and even protecting local public houses.

But, inevitably, she hopes to capitalise on “disappointment” with the Green Party administration and its “failure to deliver”. It will take a long time for memories of the GMB and Cityclean “spring of discontent” to fade. And that can only help Ms Daniel and her team. “The Greens didn’t deal with the dispute in a united, fair and responsible way,” she says. David Gibson, the only candidate to live within the ward boundaries (as he is quick to point out), is co-founder of Hanover Action for Sustainable Living - whose “anti-fracking” posters outnumber by-election posters in the windows of some streets. In endless analogies drawn from the fruit-and-vegetable trade and applied to the Green Party, Mr Gibson - a supporter of GMB members opposing council-imposed pay cuts - is reputed to be a “watermelon” (green on the outside, red on the inside), rather than a “mango (more liberal than socialist). Thankfully, there is little talk of avocadoes (green through and through). Mr Gibson is not afraid to address the “hot topic” of the Cityclean issue head-on, deftly stating: “Most people appreciate my stance that, as the party that brought in the Living Wage, we need to strain every sinew to avoid income cuts for low-paid workers. “Most agree that the problem of making allowances fair has been ignored by previous Labour and Tory councils and that reform is needed to ensure that all workers - many of them women and also low-paid - are treated fairly as a matter of urgency.” Party-political propaganda, on all sides, is focused on the record of the minority Green administration since the citywide elections in 2011. On this, Mr Gibson is robust: “It’s good for the Green Party to hear that people are positive about the living wage, which means all council workers - and increasingly other workers in the city - are benefiting from a protected level of pay.

“People also like the new Level Park and are pleased that Greens have got in money from outside funders to make the Lewes Road safer. They are pleased that 500 new

affordable homes are being built creating jobs and training.” For Robert Knight, the Conservative Party candidate, one eye must be on the general

Finding funding in tough times Darren Fell, managing director of Crunch Accounting, looks at how local entrepreneurs can attract the funding their businesses need. MORE THAN 58,000 would-be Brighton entrepreneurs registered as sole traders in the BN postcode alone in 2011. But thanks to alarming failure rates among the UK’s small businesses, the fate of many of these start-ups relies on securing the right funding. Banks aren’t exactly easy with their money at the moment, so here are three other funding options that could help to get your start-up off the ground. Angel investors Finding an investor is a great way to get the money you need to get your business off the ground. But there is a slight problem. Unsurprisingly, people don’t really like giving their money away and that’s especially true in these tough economic times. Convincing someone to do so is no easy task. When pitching, you need to tick all of the boxes. With every investor being different, however, this isn’t always an easy task. So research is essential. The perks of securing an angel investor aren’t only financial. Chances are you’re also going into business with someone

with a great deal of advice to give, too. If you want to go down this route, then complete and utter preparation is key. This isn’t only for networking events though; you never know when you might bump into a millionaire in an elevator - as rare as that might be. Always be ready. A website that can help you link up to angel investors is: www. angelinvestmentnetwork.co.uk. The Start-up Loans Scheme If the angel route failed or you would prefer a different option, there is the Start-up Loans Scheme. It works by giving people money to help their business get moving and onto the next level. For the time being, it applies only to people aged from 18 to 30. So if you are outside that bracket, unfortunately you can’t get a penny. The government has been investing a lot in this scheme and have even wheeled out James Caan, formerly of Dragon’s Den, to give it some extra publicity. The loans that are given out have no limit, but the average seems to sit at around £2,500. In the end, it is based on your needs and you will be given an amount based on the information and plans you provide. For all the information about applying go to their website:

www.startuploans.co.uk Crowdfunding Debate is still ongoing about how useful crowdfunding actually is. If you are unaware of it, it is essentially where you publicly pitch your idea online and wait for various people to invest money to help you reach your goal. For their investment, they get something in return; the bigger the investment, the bigger the reward. It’s a superb way to bring in a lot of money fairly quickly and still retain control of your idea. The problem is that your idea needs something special for it to really work. While quirky start-ups such as cat cafes have generated success, bogstandard plumbing companies tend to attract less attention. This a route that you can only really go down if you have got some kind of following already - or if you have an idea that really grabs attention.

University builds on success with £220m investment

College unveils plans for landmark development

THE UNIVERSITY of Sussex will spend £220 million to improve its main campus over the next five years, it was revealed this week. The investment will enhance the science estate, extend the library, create new teaching space, and invest in sport. It will involve getting rid of the large surface parking and building “stacked car parks” on the periphery of the Falmer campus. The land that will be freed up as a result will be used for new building and green space. The work is expected to cost £185 million, with an additional £35 million allocated to refurbishment and maintenance of existing buildings. The university is also planning to build more student flats and bedsits, which will be funded by private investors to ensure capital investment is focused on the university’s teaching, research and social needs. The proposals, which form part of the university’s strategic plan to 2018, were set out by Professor Michael Farthing, the university’s vice-chancellor, in an internal newsletter. He said: “The creation of our new plan is a collaborative endeavour, ensuring that the goals and ambitions we set are the right ones for the positive development and continued success of the university.” Professor Farthing also outlined plans for investment in technology, including a new payroll system, online submission for students, and remote learning.

By Susanna Reid CITY COLLEGE Brighton and Hove has submitted draft proposals to transform its city-centre campus in Pelham Street. The draft proposals include a "state-ofthe-art" further education college, replacing the current building with modern teaching space and associated uses. A mix of student accommodation as well as residential development will help to fund the college's facilities, while also contributing to the need for more homes in Brighton and Hove. The proposed scheme includes 12,056 square metres of improved learning facilities in an eight-storey building. A separate 10-storey tower will accommodate 442 student rooms and up to 125 homes. A new public square and events space for local people to enjoy is also envisaged in the car-free development that will have extensive cycle storage; in addition, there will be a shuttle service between campuses for students. Traffic-calming measures in Pelham Street, including using shared surfacing to give pedestrians priority and public realm improvements and active frontage to encourage a more secure and enjoyable environment are also part of the proposals. Lynn Thackway, the college principal, said: "Our aim is to be an outstanding and responsive college at the heart of learning in Brighton and Hove with a commitment

to continuous quality improvement. "This means delivering vocational and professional learning, skills, and apprenticeship opportunities in accommodation that is fit for purpose and our proposals for the redevelopment of our Pelham Street campus will help us meet this vision, as well as contributing to the economic and social wellbeing of the city." Potential economic benefits are identified as £73.4 million of inward investment, an estimated 124 construction jobs, and up to £1 million additional local spending. The college insists that the development's high-quality architectural design is mindful of the city’s heritage and its unique skyline; building materials have been selected to be in keeping with the immediate surroundings, including Jubilee Library. Under plans submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council, phased building work will mean demolition of the 1960s Pelham Tower, as well as the Cheapside, Trafalgar and York buildings nearby; work could be completed within threee years. The college’s Wilson Avenue site will be the focus of a second phase of development. According to the planning application by Harwood Savin, Surrey-based consultants,

the college "simply cannot afford to continue supporting and running the extent of inefficient and failing building stock". The college has committed to a management plan for the new development - including 24-hour supervision - to manage noise and social behaviour in and around the student halls. Outdoor space has also been designed to ensure access and enjoyment by the public, with CCTV and lighting to deter loitering. In response to concern from conservationists, the Gloucester building, which backs onto Trafalgar Court, is being retained. Ms Thackway said: “We have listened to local people and adjusted the scheme to meet their concerns, whilst maintaining the exciting elements which make this project something that will contribute greatly to the city’s economy, culture and future."

Martin Harris, the new boss of Brighton and Hove Buses, maps out the road ahead Frank le Duc BRIGHTON AND HOVE Buses and Metrobus in Crawley are to be merged by their parent company, the Go-Ahead Group. The merged business will be run by Martin Harris, who took over from Roger French as managing director of Brighton and Hove Buses 3 months ago. The two men worked together in Brighton in the 1980s; the recently-retired Metrobus boss, Alan Inkwell,

was another former member of the same management team. Mr Harris, who took over responsibility for Metrobus from Monday, told a Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce business breakfast that he would be “looking at how people come into the city”. With plenty of people travelling between the Brighton and Hove area and the Crawley and Gatwick area, there should be a number of opportunities to help passengers and boost business. Mr Harris told the Chamber breakfast at Carluccio’s, in Jubilee Street, Brighton, that he was keen to bring in simpler pricing and deals for apprentices and jobseekers. “We need to get the pricing right,” he said, adding that he was mindful of families comparing the cost of travelling into Brighton by bus and

the cost of driving in and parking in Churchill Square instead. He wanted to make more use of new technology to reduce delays as passengers boarded buses which would speed up journey times. Regardless of technology - for example, scratchcards vs mobile phones - he said that cheaper pre-paid tickets helped. Brighton Housing Trust chief executive Andy Winter, who was in the audience, highlighted how higher cash fares discriminated against the poorest people in society. He said that they were the least able to pay for fares up-front or to own and use the latest technology. Mr Harris said: “I’m mindful of those people and we’re looking at ways to help them. But we want to move to a one-off

price if you pay in advance and to encourage that instead of cash, in line with most advanced cities. “We don’t want to say: ‘Cash? Oh no!’ We don’t ever want to turn away business.” Tom Druitt, who runs the rival Big Lemon bus service, asked if Mr Harris would work with competitors so that passengers could buy one ticket for journeys involving buses run by more than one operator. Mr Harris said: “We’ve got to get there and we’ve got to get there fairly fast if we want to keep people onside. One way might be to open up our own systems, with measures to protect smaller operators." He said his team were talking with Brighton and Hove City Council, adding: “I’m 100 per cent in favour of it and I would advocate cheap and quick solutions.”

The Living Wage is a fair trade

Your Mortgage - Is it time to Fix?

THE LIVING WAGE CAMPAIGN in Brighton and Hove is gaining momentum and as hoped, starting to secure its place on every company’s agenda when discussing staff salaries. The Chamber of Commerce is currently running the Living Wage Campaign on behalf of the Council, asking employers to voluntarily pay their staff £7.45 ph or more. This is the rate calculated for someone to live out of poverty in Brighton and Hove. The campaign launched less than a year ago and this week they unveil their new campaign film. With over 75 businesses already signed up and larger companies now giving it more consideration, the team behind the campaign believes it is getting the local awareness it deserves. The initiative does not pressurise anyone to sign up as it is recognised that not every employer can pay the Living Wage for a wide variety of reasons. However it is an awareness raising campaign because it is well recognised by many successful businesses that customers increasingly consider ethical purchasing standards such as fair trade, and corporate social responsibility in general to be important. Any business which falls too far behind on this perception potentially stands to lose market share, as increasingly ethically aware consumers put their money where their mouth is. The success of ‘fair trade’ and ethical product outlets in Brighton and Hove, with growth above the overall consumer goods baseline supports this strongly. The Living Wage Campaign offers businesses a FOC

A MORTGAGE is very often the largest financial commitment you will have. Whether you have a repayment or interest only mortgage, the certainty of knowing what your future outgoings can be very important. Ian Poysden looks at whether now is a good time to look at a fixed rate mortgage. A few years ago most of us would have said no, opting instead for a cheaper, variable rate deal. But the tide has turned and we have witnessed a ‘race to the bottom’ by lenders with fixed rate mortgage deals as banks are taking advantage of cheap money courtesy of the Government's Funding for Lending Scheme. I think that it is unlikely that fixed rate deals will fall much further and now may be a very good time to review the mortgage deal you have. Lenders are enticing the less risky borrowers who have large deposits or equity with the best rates, but in general, for those looking for a higher loan to value percentage there are attractive options available too. Some of the best deals have five year fixed rates below 2.75%, and for those looking at 2 year deals the rates on offer go down to around 2.25%. Longer fixed terms are also available. Base rates have been at an all-time low of 0.5% for over four years, but the money markets are suggesting we may

opportunity to put a ‘feather in their cap’ and in a fair trade and One Planet Living city the Living Wage brings these benefits back home. Fair trade is not just about coffee farmers in developing countries, but intrinsic to the way we live and work in our city too. In the long run this will mean that more people will be out of poverty, be able to afford to leave home, more people can spend their money locally. Local businesses will benefit. It’s a winning spiral and one that should be going upwards. Recent sign ups include Face Media Group, Brighton Women’s Centre, hiSbe, Brainwaves, Leapfrogg Ltd, Silicon Beach Training, Mayo Wynne Baxter LLP, East Sussex Credit Union Ltd, Rockinghorse, Robinson Low Francis, RDF Group and award winning - SiteVisibility. see the first interest rate rise as soon as the summer of 2015. For anyone on a variable rate of 3%, an increase in rates of 1% would see mortgage repayments increase by 25%. For those with finances already stretched, this rise could make repayments potentially unaffordable. One size does not fit all, and for some, the flexibility of a variable rate may be more attractive. As with all financial matters it is important to constantly review your commitments to ensure your financial plans and goals are on track. Without a ‘Chrystal Ball’ there can be no guarantees over rates, but taking advantage of a financial health check at least once a year should always be a priority. With the potential benefit of increased security, protection and above all saving money means there is really no reason not to. With plenty of people travelling between the Brighton and Hove area and the Crawley and Gatwick area, there should be a number of opportunities to help passengers and boost business Mr Druitt responded: “It was a good answer. It was definitely what I wanted to hear.” Mr Harris said that Brighton and Hove Buses was also talking to the council about upgrading the real-time signs at bus stops. While more people were using their mobile phones and similar devices to find out where their bus was, he added: “The signs at the bus stops create visibility and awareness.” Mr Harris disclosed his company was working with Ricardo in Shoreham to look at ways of ensuring the bus fleet became more environmentally friendly. He would talk with the council about ways to micro-manage some junctions such as the top of North Street. Given concerns about pollution, changes could help improve air quality, he said, as well as punctuality. He called for more to be done to make bus travel easier around the area, including bus lanes in Edward Street. And he backed the introduction of 20mph speed limits in the central parts of Brighton and Hove - although he sounded less enthusiastic about the next phase.

He said that while 20mph might be a suitable limit in the suburbs, he wanted the 30mph limit to be retained on roads linking the estates and the city centre. Time trials had been conducted, he said, and these showed a marked difference to journey times if buses kept to the lower speed limit. Mr Harris also said: “For many years we haven’t had commercial advertising on our buses. We’ve used that space to promote what we’re doing. I’m going to open that space up, perhaps to promote destinations. “I’m going to dip our toe in the water this autumn and allow people to promote their businesses on the back of our buses and maybe later on the sides.” He said the offer would initially be focused on local businesses, especially venues and other attractions in the city. the central friendships are concerned.

Entertaining, frequently hilarious comedy with a witty script, a superb comic cast and some surprisingly good special effects, though your enjoyment of the film will largely depend on how funny you find the relentless self-parody. What’s it all about? Co-written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, This Is The End begins with Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen (playing themselves) attending a Hollywood party at James Franco’s house just as the apocalypse begins, engulfing all of Los Angeles in fiery chaos. When the majority of Franco’s guests (including Rihanna, Michael Cera, Kevin Hart and Paul Rudd) are swallowed up by a recently opened chasm, Rogen, Baruchel and Franco barricade themselves inside the house with Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride, fending off various demons and marauders in the meantime. However, as the Love Brighton-0507:Layout 1

days pass, tensions and petty rivalries within the group begin to flare. The Good With the cast all playing slightly exaggerated versions of themselves it seems odd to talk about the performances, but Rogen and Baruchel make terrific, likeable leads (their bromance-style friendship is surprisingly moving) and Franco, McBride, Robinson and Hill are all very funny in support, particularly when ripping into each other about the bad movies they’ve made. There are also a handful of amusing cameos, most notably Michael Cera (partying like he’s Jack Nicholson circa 15:22

1975) and Emma Watson, who decides she’d rather take her chances with the apocalypse after she overhears the men making inappropriate comments. The witty, rapid-fire script is packed with self-referential jokes (God help you if you’re unfamiliar with any of the actors) and is frequently laugh-out-loud funny, with several great running gags (e.g. Baruchel’s suspicion that Hill doesn’t like him, no-one actually liking McBride, etc) and some hilarious pisstaking (Franco and McBride fighting over porn is a particularly puerile highlight). However, Rogen and Goldberg are careful to make their emotional moments work too, at least as far as

The Great The special effects are surprisingly good, whether it’s the fiery chaos engulfing L.A. or the various creatures and demons that the characters encounter – clearly, Rogen and Goldberg have spent a lot of time wondering what the End of Days might actually look like. In addition, the film has a number of unexpectedly charming throwaway moments, such as the moment when they decide to kill time by making a low-budget sequel to Pineapple Express. The only real problem is that the central conceit wears a little thin at times and your mileage may vary in terms of the overall smugness scale, but if you’re a fan of the actors’ previous films, you’re probably on pretty safe ground. That said, if you don’t share a particular obsession of Baruchel’s, then the film’s big closing joke seems anti-climactic, to say the least.

One in five parents struggling to feed their children ONE IN FIVE parents in the UK is struggling to feed their children, new research has revealed. The research shows more than twenty per cent of parents have skipped meals, gone without food to feed their children or relied on family members or friends for food in the last twelve months. The research, carried out by Tesco, the Foodbanks charity the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare comes as the three organisations prepare to hold the biggest ever food collection in the UK on the 5 and 6 July. 70% of families suffering from food poverty with children in primary school education rely in some part on food supplied by schools, either through free school meals

or food given out by breakfast or after school clubs. The upcoming school summer holidays could now see a large number of children going hungry. More than a quarter of parents suffering from some form of food poverty said they were unable to provide food for all the meals their children need during the school holidays. The research also shows the problem of food poverty is unlikely to improve in the near future, with only a third of people currently suffering from food poverty expecting their situation to improve in the next twelve months. Rebecca Shelley, Group Corporate Affairs Director at Tesco said: “This research reveals that since our last national food collection

in December, the problem of food poverty in the UK has increased and shows no signs of improving. It’s hitting families hard, especially when resources like free school meals, breakfast clubs and after school clubs are not available. “Because we have stores in so many communities across the UK, we are working with the help of our customers, thousands of our colleagues and volunteers from the Trussell Trust and FareShare to help provide emergency food to people who are struggling.” The National Food Collection will take place in every Tesco store in the country and will help provide much needed food for the Trussell Trust foodbank network and the 900 UK charities supported by FareShare.

Tesco held its first national collection in December last year, raising the equivalent of 2.4 million meals for people in need. Like December, the retailer will be topping up total donations by a further 30%. 18% of people in the UK have suffered from some form of food poverty, including skipping meals, parents going without food to feed their children or relying on family or friends to provide food. The figure rises to 21% for households with children; Every Tesco store in the UK will be taking part in the collection. For the first time, Tesco Express stores will be joining the collection and customers who prefer to shop for their groceries online will also be able to donate. Like last December’s collection, Tesco will be topping up total donations by a further 30%.

Fashion & Lifestyle The rise of the prom kings RETAILER Debenhams has revealed that for the first time ever guys are spending nearly as much as girls on getting themselves ready for Prom. Boys are spending on average 24% more prepping for their prom compared with 2012 only £82.25 less than what a girl spends. Debenhams’ dinner suits are selling 60% more than they were this time last year, formal shirts and shoes are flying off the shelves and bow tie sales have increased by 20% in recent weeks. Ed Watson, spokesperson for Debenhams says; “The amount a guy will spend on getting Prom-ready is now close to rivalling a girl. However, the ladies seem to be better prepared - we have seen an increase in occasionwear sales since January whereas guys have been rushing in last minute to get ready for the big night.” Male grooming products and treatments are also getting booked up; the rate of men coming in for spray tans has nearly doubled in the last month alone. The retailer has also seen an increase in male eyebrow threading appointments to give their ‘guy-brows’ the prom treatment. Watson continues; “Prom fever has hit Debenhams and guys are going all out to look their best and it doesn’t stop at the suit.

“Budding prom kings want to achieve a polished, groomed look and are looking to celebrities such as David Beckham and Daniel Craig for heir ‘promspiration’.” Stores in Scotland have seen the biggest increase in male promzillas and Liverpool has been inundated with guys coming in for spray tans to compete with the prom girls. Debenhams personal shoppers are now offering prom consultations for guys who need a helping hand finding the perfect suit. To meet the demand of budding Prom Kings Debenhams has launched a complete tuxedo available for only £110. Debenhams formalwear is available in stores nationwide and online at Debenhams.com.

Horoscopes Aries You can be a bit of a secret squirrel. Your intentions may be quite benign but they may be misinterpreted because of this side of your nature. Explain yourself and see the visible and audible sighs of relief! This is a great week for a BBQ or garden party so what if it rains; you’re a ray of sunshine!

Horoscopes from Kimi 28th June - 1st July

Taurus If you are still taken for granted this is, in part, your fault. This is a good week for breaking with the tried and tested and doing things a little bit differently and a good week for all outdoor and or physical activities. So why not combine the two and book that adventure weekend for you and your partner.

Cancer It is not in your nature to hurt others feelings but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. You know there is no chance and you are not going there but I am not sure you have made this crystal clear to the other party! Do it now and open the door to new friendships!

Gemini Don’t get too bogged down with internal politics in the workplace. Others will try to drag you in to their battles. It’s ok to show your support but just make sure you are not the one left fighting for them. And try not to take work related matters home with you. In your personal life compromise is the buzz word.

Leo You are desperate for a little breathing space this week. Make sure you get it as you have a tendency to be a little short with others when you have one of your black moods. Flirting is on the agenda but don’t get too carried away with new acquaintances and neglect old friends. You may need them soon.

Got any fashion tips? @BrightonIndy

Kate sparks a right royal maternity trend KATE MIDDLETON’S choice of pretty, feminine maternity wear has sparked a nationwide trend, according to sales information released by department store Debenhams. Debenhams has seen sales of floaty dresses and pretty styles of maternity wear increase by more than +500% versus this time last year, and is attributing this to the Duchess, and pregnant women wanting to emulate her beautiful, elegant look. With not a dungaree or stretchy smock in sight, the Duchess of Cambridge has continued to paint a picture of elegance throughout her pregnancy, opting for ditsy printed tea dresses, embroidery and lace. Clothing items popular amongst pregnant women at Debenhams include printed blouses in cool cottons and satins (+36%), angel sleeve bow dresses (+94%) and kimono sleeve dresses (+127) which are all selling well.

Says Debenhams spokesperson Michelle Dowdall, “Details such as embellishment and soft fabrics are important to our customers, as they want to get the Kate look even whilst pregnant. “Women seem to be shunning more stereotypical, casual types of maternity wear such as jersey trousers and leggings, and instead want to look and feel their best.” Women are also emulating Kate’s off-duty look, with pretty woven tops and cropped Capri trousers selling well, with some lines up more than +500%. Due to the popularity of elegant maternity wear styles and shapes, Debenhams is dubbing the trend ‘The Duchess Effect’. Continues Michelle Dowdall, “We have done a lot of work on our maternity ranges to ensure we are offering customers what they want. Clothes still need to be comfortable, but not necessarily baggy and made from 100% elastic! “Sales suggest that mums-to-be are waving goodbye to leggings and dungarees, and opting for timeless, stylish maternity wear.” Debenhams is planning to roll out more formal and occasion maternity styles to keep up with the trend, and cope with customer demand as the season moves into autumn.

Virgo You give your friends cause for concern this week. You on the other hand feel as though they are being judgmental and flippant about your concerns. You feel at odds with the group. Trust that they really are well meaning but perhaps give misguided advice. It might be best to talk over your concerns with a disinterested third party.

are fanciful and flighty. Nothing could be further from the truth; you just have an inordinate fear of being controlled. When you are given assurance that no one is out to possess you or dictate terms you are a pussycat. You need to let your feelings be known this week. This will clear the air.

Libra Constructive delegation is the key at work this week. This means you remain in control of the direction of projects but allow others to undertake some of the less important tasks. You will also be having some conversation whether at work or at home about finance. A touchy subject for you but unfortunately a subject that cannot be shelved! Scorpio You love to be seen as “the fixer” but be careful this week not to overdo this role as you could be seen as “the meddler”. You need to stand back a little and let others get involved in the learning process. Travel arrangements could prove difficult, check your passport is up to date and you have your tickets booked! Sagittarius Some people may think you

Capricorn This week is tempestuous. This is great if directed towards your love life it will spark things up and ignite passions. If you bring this emotion into the work place then that is entirely another thing. Keep your temper and your position. Burn off your energy physically or use this force to come up with new and creative projects. Aquarius You are beginning to wonder if you have got it all wrong. Someone makes a statement that gives you pause for thought. This is a good time for setting out the parameters and making sure you know where you are going and what is expected of you. Having done that you can enjoy the rest of the week socializing. Pisces You hate it when others let you down, so why let them down? You have an awful lot going on at the moment but try not to over commit or you will be in danger of doing this. An old flame may come back in to your life but remember they are an “old flame” for a reason!

Motors Rivervale cheers MG at British F1 Grand Prix Follow us on Twitter @BrightonIndy

THREE OF THE exciting new MG3 superminis were on show at the British F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone last weekend and Rivervale MG were be looking out for them. Thousands of F1 fans were able to see the new small MG which has created a storm of interest following the recent unveiling of the full range of styling options available from launch. Buyers are able to have fun stamping their own character on their MG3 thanks to a fantastic personalisation palette with 10 colour choices and a wide range of exterior graphics and interior finishes. On show in the Woodlands camping area, just 250 metres from the Silverstone circuit, were three examples – a car in Lady Grey with Shards graphics; the second in Smokey Blues with Hope & Glory graphics and a third in White on the Tiles with Mod Oct graphics. MG3, designed and engineered at the MG Birmingham plant, is a distinctive statement of modern British style and is designed to target young and young-at-heart buyers who want a really practical small car that is fun to buy, own and drive. Exterior highlights include 16” Diamond cut alloy wheels, unique LED ‘hockey stick’ daytime running lights, sport-design bumper, side sill extensions, rear spoiler, sports-design rear valance, chrome exhaust finishers and MG insert headlamps.

Classic post-war Motorcycle Show THE Heritage Motor Centre is launching a brand new show this year for enthusiasts of postwar 1945 motorcycles. The “Classic post-war Motorcycle Show” will take place on Sunday 25 August and is expected to attract over 700 bikes from a host of motorcycle clubs and private individuals. Although the HMC currently organises the annual nostalgic Banbury Run for pre-1931 motorcycles & 3 wheelers, it appeared there was a gap in the events calendar to showcase motorcycles from the post war era. In addition to the display of these marvelous machines including BSA, Triumph, Matchless, Norton, Kawasaki and Yamaha, visitors can also chat about biking experiences with fellow bikers plus wander around a bike jumble and trade stands as well as enjoying refreshments and a live band. Tom Caren, Show Manager stated “We are delighted to be launching a new show to showcase post-war motorcycles. With over 700 bikes on display, these nostalgic machines will be a fantastic spectacle to admire plus being a great day out to meet other like-minded enthusiasts!” Onsite camping is available on the Saturday night and visitors are advised to enquire at the time of booking. Motorcycle entries are £7 per person. Spectator prices are £12 for Adults, £10 for Concessions, £8 for Children (Age 5-16) and under 5’s are free. visit heritage-motor-centre.co.uk.

Inside the MG3 you can find an easy to use air conditioning system, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth with audio streaming, DAB radio, USB/Aux input, automatic lights, automatic wipers, rear parking sensors, ‘ZERO’ design fabric seats and partleather trim. This unique and contemporary style of the MG3 is the work of the 30 design staff and 300 engineers at SAIC’s UK Technical Centre at the MG Birmingham site in Longbridge, UK. SAIC Motor is MG’s parent company and is the world’s eighth largest automotive company. The MG3 will become the second in a new generation of MG vehicles to leave the assembly line at the Birmingham factory, following the introduction of the MG6 petrol and diesel range of GT fastbacks and Magnette four-door sports saloons. Prices for the exciting MG3 range will be announced in August and the car will go on sale in September. Martyn Brown at Rivervale in Victoria Road, Portslade said: “We have only just started to roll out the MG3 in the UK and already the reaction has been fantastic. We’ve even had people asking to put their names down to secure one of the first cars. “It’s distinctive, cheeky and will be a real fun car – the vast range of styling choices means the fun starts even when you’re ordering one. But at the same time it’s a very practical car and will offer one of the very best interior space packages in class.”

Caravans and motorhomes in demand WITH REPORTS suggesting that two out of three families will be holidaying in the UK this year as a result of financial pressures, BCA is reporting huge interest in the specialised caravan and motorhome sales staged twice monthly at the Measham auction centre. The most recent sale in June attracted a large crowd of interested buyers, with some 250 attending the sale in person and a further 200 bidding via BCA’s Live Online service. A total of 111 vehicles were on offer and 109 were sold for a turnover of nearly £900,000. This monthly sale featured a special entry of 51 caravans and motorhomes from Black Horse Finance, all of which sold on the day, generating a record turnover of more than £450,000. The Black Horse entry included seven motorhomes with two ‘A Class’ vehicles emerging as the stars of the show. The 2008 Neisman Bischoff 74 CGB attracted a lot of attention from buyers, selling for £36,000. The 6-berth Knaus S-Liner Motorhome was finished to luxurious standards including fixed double bed and overhead bed, leather trim and integrated televisions. With a pre-sale estimate of £37,000, it soared past that figure to sell for £51,100. Three Elddis Autoquest 180 motorhomes were sold, with a 2010 60-registered example selling for £25,000, and a 2004-54 model realising £24,400. Caravans also proved very popular and sold strongly. A 2011 Lunar Delta TI

realised £12,200 and a 2008 Bailey Senator Wyoming 4 Berth sold for an above estimate £8,900. The top selling caravan on the day was a 2011 Swift Conqueror 645/4, which achieved £12,900. Ross Taylor Lex Autolease Disposal Manager said “We have a superb selection of motor homes and caravans every month at this sale. We have worked very hard with the team at BCA Measham to ensure the marketing and presentation of these leisure sales is first class and we are delighted with the results we achieve.” BCA spokesman Tim Naylor commented

“With relatively limited opportunities to buy caravans and motorhomes at auction, these sales have always been popular, but the step up in interest this year has been exceptional. Buyers are competing very strongly across the board and values are routinely exceeding guide prices - often by a considerable margin.” He added “This ties in with recent reports that many families are considering staying in the UK and taking short breaks this year. No doubt many see a caravan or motorhome as a good value investment for this year’s holiday and for the years ahead.”

"I think one of the great things that would happen to rugby would be a club from Sussex finding itself in the top two leagues. "Haywards Heath dabbled with it a few years ago and didn't quite pull through. International century for Sussex player

SUSSEX’S Matt Machan hit his first OneDay International century as he led his Scotland to victory over Kenya in their match at Aberdeen last week. Machan hit his maiden ODI century as the Scots moved up to third in the ICC World Cricket League Championship. His 100 came from only 101 balls and when

he was finally snared by Tanmay Mishra, he had scored 114 from 111 balls having hit nine fours and three sixes. He also showed his all-round credentials as he claimed figures of 3 for 31 in seven overs as Kenya, who included former Sussex recruit Ragheb Aga amongst their ranks, fell 12 runs short of their total.

Garcia promises to bring a touch of Barcelona OSCAR GARCIA has promised to bring a touch of Barcelona to Brighton and Hove Albion after being appointed boss of the Seasiders. The 40-year-old former Barca midfielder oversaw his first training session last week after taking over as the Seagulls' new head coach. "I'm impressed with the people I'm working with at Brighton and I'm very happy, it's a pleasure for me to be here," he said. "In the morning I met all the players and I saw a lot of good things. I knew English football and I knew some players who are playing here. "My obsession is to attack, to attack the opposition, to keep the ball and to have the ball as many times as possible. If we have the ball we will have many chances to score and win the game. That's my philosophy. "If you play good football you will have more chances to win than if you play bad." Despite a successful playing career which also took in Valencia and Espanyol, Garcia, who quit as boss of Maccabi Tel Aviv last month, says he was always destined to become a manager. "When I was a professional player I was always thinking about what the coach was

thinking and why he did certain things," he added. "I started to think that I wanted to be a manager or a coach. I love thinking about how we can win a game, how we can create an opening - these kind of things got me thinking that I wanted to be a manager. "It's difficult because when you are a player, you think maybe only about yourself but when you are the manager you have to think about maybe 30 people and it's not easy. But when you prepare for a game and you've done something in training which you then see the results of on the pitch, it makes you very happy."

B e n i h s d n Rise a ALBION WILL FACE more Spanish opposition this summer with a mouthwatering friendly against La Liga side Villarreal at the Amex on Saturday 27th July, kicking-off at 7.30pm. The Spanish visitors are on good form, securing promotion to the Spanish topflight on the last day of last season. They beat third-placed Almeria, who eventually got promoted in the play-offs largely due to Leo Ulloa’s successor Charles. Speculation mounts over the line-up that new Villarreal manager, Marcelino Garcia, will play at the Amex. One of their

summer targets is Giovani dos Santos; the ex-Tottenham attacking midfielder, who was relegated with Mallorca in 2012-13. Santos is reportedly seeking a move away from the Islanders during the summer in a bid to boost his chances of being selected for Mexico's World Cup campaign. Tickets for the match with Spanish giants Villarreal are already on sale at the Amex, the ticketline or online at seagulls.co.uk. Also, both fixtures are included as part of 1901 Club membership and these games will automatically be pre-loaded onto members' season ticket smartcards.

Stephen Dobbie signed by Crystal Palace CRYSTAL PALACE have signed Abion striker Stephen Dobbie on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee. Dobbie scored three goals in 15 loan appearances for Palace towards the end of last season and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. The Scotsman has experience of topflight football in England from his time with Swansea City and he played under Palace boss Ian Holloway during a couple of loan spells with Blackpool. Dobbie told Palace's official website:

"I'm delighted. It was all agreed in principle coming on loan. Obviously I've worked with the gaffer a number of times and there was no problem with that. "A lot of people don't see the side to the gaffer that we do - on the pitch, on the training field, on the bus and in the changing room. "It's every player's dream, especially in the Championship - they want to be playing in the Premier League. You go away and have a nice holiday, but still in the back of your mind, you've only got four weeks off, so maybe in a week and a half, you're going to know who you're playing in that first game.
