Mystery photographer captures city life in 10,000 images Exclusive by Richard Morris A PHOTOGRAPHER has amassed a collection of more than 7,500 images in his efforts to document a year in the life of Brighton and Hove. The photojournalist began his epic archive in October last year and will keep snapping away until he has completed 365 days behind lens. He expects to end up with more than 10,000 photographs. The Brighton-based photographer wishes to remain anonymous - using the project name “Stroma-Brighton”. Speaking exclusively to Brighton & Hove Independent, however, he was happy to explain what inspired him to tackle such a labour of love. “I was spending a lot of time walking round the city,” he said, “and I was seeing plenty of things I thought people wouldn’t believe without photographic evidence. “One morning I saw the country’s only private bomb-disposal team - and then the mayor taking part in a fun run with his chain round his neck. I got back home, ordered a camera and that was that.” Only it wasn’t. Far from it. He quickly hatched the idea of documenting city life and embarked on mammoth project, one that has since taken over his life. “Some mornings I am up at 6am,” he admitted. “I do have to do some planning. I

can’t just rely on traipsing around waiting for something to happen. “I want to reflect everything which goes on here: - not what you would see on a postcard.” There are long-term plans for a book, an exhibition, and even a lasting archive for future generations to ponder. “Everything people say about Brighton is justified,” he said. “It is a very dynamic place. When people tell me they‘re bored, I can’t believe it. “There is also a dark side to Brighton, though. I want to capture its underbelly – not just the iconic images we are all familiar with.” That approach has taken the artist into

the homeless community and out to crime scenes, seen him embrace the local street art scene, and get a glimpse of some of the city’s loveable eccentrics. There must be one place, though, that the artist would love to visit but has not yet had the pleasure? “I would love to go to the morgue,” he admitted. “I don’t want to see bodies but I have an image of a five-hour baby in a maternity ward. Capturing the morgue would complement that nicely.” Some images are available by searching Stroma-Brighton online at Facebook, Twitter or photo-sharing site Flickr. Readers are also encouraged to suggest places to photograph. But why the anonymity? “This isn’t my photo diary,” he explained. “This is a diary of life in the city. I don’t really come into it. “The last photograph though will reveal who I am. I am going to turn the camera round and show people who has been walking around taking pictures of them for the last 12 months.” For more images, see page 19. Exclusive: Ambitious plan for Engineerium Susanna Reid A UNIQUE collection of architectural artefacts could be on its way to Brighton and Hove, it is revealed today. Mike Holland, the Brighton businessman, wants to enhance the British Engineerium to house the Surrey-based collection - which charts the evolution of British building details over the last 500 years. Since 1966, The Brooking Collection, founded by Charles Brooking, has rescued architectural features - such as doors, windows and architraves - from landmark buildings and country estates to modest terrace houses and vernacular cottages. Mr Holland, a regular contributor to Brighton & Hove Independent, discloses the ambitious plan in a typically-trenchant column on page 12 of today's newspaper. He does so in an "open letter" to Brighton and Hove City Council's planning department, in which he articulates his opposition to a controversial plan to build a three-storey, 650-pupil bi-lingual primary school on a site next to the British Engineerium. For more information about The Brooking Collection, visit: www.thebrookingcollection.com. For Mike Holland’s column, see page 12.

Join us to discuss data and the future of news Greg Hadfield, editorial director THIS NEWSPAPER seeks to celebrate our city – and the achievements of all the people who make Brighton and Hove what it is. The people are the city. We are independent: independentlyowned; independent in our approach. We want to add value to the city – and not extract profits to be shipped to shareholders in London or in the United States. Of course, our city has its challenges. And we are not afraid to address those. With passion and with purpose. We want to work with our fellow citizens to build a 21st-century media platform for a 21st-century city – a platform on which the city can have a conversation with itself, on which businesses can do business. We all deserve better than what is

currently on offer. At 7.30pm on Monday (July 22), we want to invite you to help us. In the first of a regular series of informal public meetings - with members of the Open-data Brighton and Hove Group and the Future of News Group - we will be at Emporium, 88 London Road, Brighton BN1 4JF. Jason Kitcat DEMAND at food banks across the country has tripled in the last few months, compared with the same time last year. The increase in families unable to afford food has been caused the latest round of welfare cuts, such as the bedroom tax and the benefit cap, which the government has implemented since April. At the same time, the food and drink industry often has surplus food that goes unsold or is unneeded. Shamefully, this usually goes to waste despite being perfectly edible. The FareShare network of charities tackles these two issues by collecting surplus food from suppliers and redistributing it to community organisations to give out to people in need. The FareShare network in Brighton and Hove has grown enormously recently, collecting more than 223 tonnes of food from 26

Dave Vickers, Steve Steadman and Nathan Au, of FareShare (Photograph by Julia Claxton Photography)

suppliers in the area, in the last six months alone. This food has gone to 58 local projects to give out to those struggling to make ends meet, such as hostels, day-centres and churches. Half of those receiving food were homeless, unemployed, or families in financial difficulties. Demand is increasing and the charity intends to undertake fundraising to hire another

new van to increase their capacity. The project also offers volunteering and work-placement opportunities and half of those that they currently support are out of education, training and work. Those who volunteer are offered training and qualifications they are able to use to move on to further employment elsewhere; the feedback from volunteers about their time there is overwhelmingly positive.

FareShare provides a vital community service – helping those in need, providing training opportunities, and saving food from going to waste. So I’m really pleased that the council is able to continue supporting FareShare and the crucial work that they do. Anti-Sharia Labour candidate in two-woman battle to be MP rights for all, job creation, investment in infrastructure and the building of a country where society, economy and politics are inclusive and not divisive. ‘The Labour Party will continue not only to protect our environment but will ensure justice for the people on this planet. We are about more than words, we are about delivering change – we can and do make a difference.”

More than 1,400 party members are entitled to vote tomorrow (Saturday) after an opportunity to question both candidates bidding to stand against Caroline Lucas, the Green MP, who won Brighton Pavilion from Labour in 2010. After the 2010 general election, the total number of Muslim MPs doubled - to eight, out of 650. Purna Sen: Rival to anti-Sharia candidate

Anti-Sharia candidate Anne Marie Waters: 'Either don't come here - or leave!'

A LEADING campaigner against Sharia law - the moral and religious code for Muslims - is hoping to be Labour MP for Brighton Pavilion. Anne Marie Waters, described by opponents as a "secular fundamentalist", is campaigning against Purna Sen, her Indian-born rival - who is herself bidding to be the first non-white MP to represent Brighton and Hove in the history of democratic politics. Ms Waters, who lives in London, has caused concern locally about comments she made in a Channel Four broadcast about religion and immigration. In the two-minute video she made for the channel's 4thought.TV programme, she said: "I don't see that everyone has a right to live in Britain. I think it's a privilege. I think If you come here, you must accept the rights, freedoms that has taken centuries people here to create. And if you don't accept them, perhaps it's best you: a) don't come here; or b) leave." Subsequently, in a statement to Labour Party members in Brighton Pavilion, Ms Waters - a Dublin-born feminist and activist for Lesbian, gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LgBT) rights - promised: "I will undermine UKIP by addressing the issues they address, and I will do so in plain English and listen respectfully to people's concerns, no matter how 'taboo'." In May, she spoke at an Oxford Union debate to oppose the motion: "This House believes Islam is a religion of peace." She was on the losing side of the debate. A leading light in the anti-Sharia One Law for All campaign, Ms Waters argues that it is crucial people oppose religious fundamentalists who seek to oppress women - in this country and abroad. Her comments have attracted unwanted praise from the other end of the political spectrum, including the ultra-right-wing and often-violent

English Defence League. The Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal that Sunny Choudhury, general secretary of Sussex Bangladeshi Association, has written to Brighton, Hove and District Labour Party to raise concerns about "irresponsible" comments by Ms Waters, who speaks regularly to meetings of the National Secular Society. In a private letter, Mr Choudhury - a former civil servant who has lived in Brighton for 40 years - said he and many members of the black minority ethnic community were "shocked" by Ms Waters’s comments in the Channel Four broadcast. He warned: "Her extreme views will destroy our party’s relationship with minority ethnic communities.” Mr Choudhury said there were many Muslim men and women in the Labour Party - including Shabana Mahmood, the shadow minister for higher education and science, who is one of three Muslim women MPs. "I sincerely hope you will look in to this matter," he told Mel Davis, party chair and a former councillor. Separately, Ms Sen – a Brighton resident who came to the UK when she was two – said: "Like many people in Brighton I am angry about the damage the Tory-led government is doing to this country and the way in which those in need are being portrayed as scroungers and undeserving. "We are being made to pay for austerity through lost jobs, decreases in real income, demolition of the public sector, marginalisation of disabled people and demonisation of those who need state support. This is what the absence of economic growth feels like; this is what social division looks like. “The only way to remove this Coalition is by returning a Labour government in 2015. A Labour government will promote fairness,

“Let’s Walk. Let’s Dream. Let’s Celebrate.” Maire McQueeney ON SUNDAY morning, near Brighton Pier in Brighton, women and men will assemble before setting off on a seven-day, 60-mile walk to London’s Hyde Park. Walk for Women (WfW) - a social-media event - is another project by Lucy-Anne Holmes, who is also organiser of the highlyvisible “No More Page 3” campaign; its mantra is “Let’s Walk. Let’s Dream. Let’s Celebrate”. Sunday’s walkers – who will be addressed by Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion and Baroness Joyce Gould, patron of Brighton’s Women’s Centre – have no doubt the campaign for equal political rights is still a work in progress. This month marks the centenary of the “Great Pilgrimage for Women’s Suffrage”, whose eight national routes converged at Hyde Park Corner on Saturday, July 26 1913. The historic pilgrimage was organised by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS). Some of the national union’s 40 organisers had prepared 19 stages for speeches by national celebrities, including Millicent Garrett Fawcett - author, NUWSS president, and widow of Henry Fawcett, Brighton’s visually-impaired MP from 1865 to 1874. An audience of 50,000 attended the “monster rally” in London. Among them was the Hon. Mrs Alys Russell - recently-divorced from Bertrand Russell, the philosopher-

mathematician - who had walked from Brighton, making speeches in Sussex and Surrey villages and collecting signatures on Friends of Women’s Suffrage Cards in support of votes for women. The 1913 Brighton Road Pilgrimage route was among the shortest routes to the capital; its departure was scheduled for 10am on Monday, July 21. Pilgrims assembled in St Peter’s Place, near The Level police station. Women wore plain colours, the better to display the green-white-and-red badges and sashes of the NUWSS. Flattering walking skirts bought from Swan & Edgar were worn with hard-wearing hosiery and stout footwear. Some stowed sustaining food in a specially-designed haversack labelled Brighton Road, together with their wet-weather gear. About 100 pilgrims sang the National Suffrage Song as well as a special Brighton Road song composed by Henry Madle, the organist at St Bartholomew’s. The group included a drummer and fiddler, whose political day would end in Cuckfield Churchyard after 7pm with a rendition of the God Save the King. As route-adviser to Walk for Women 2013, my challenge was to map a safe off-road route, well-served by public transportation and coinciding, wherever possible, with the historic path through Clayton, Hassocks, Burgess Hill, Cuckfield, Crawley and onward. So, Walk for Women visits the South

Historic: Cyclists at Clayton, on the Brighton Road, on the "Great Pilgrimage" in 1913

Downs Way, High Weald Landscape Trail, Surrey’s Millennium Trail, North Downs Way, and excellent London walking routes and parks. On Saturday, July 27, the walk meets at Clapham Common South for a five-mile walk to Hyde Park Corner for a picnic with speakers – including Laura Bates, of The Everyday Sexism Project. As in 1913, walkers are welcome to join and leave Walk For Women 2013 en route if a shorter walk with good conversation suits you best.

Tickets? Passports? Lawyers? Things go quiet for the family lawyer over the summer break. The kids are off school, people are enjoying the summer weather or getting away from it all. Stressed couples look forward to reconnecting on a summer holiday, maybe even giving the relationship ‘one last chance’. But holidays are known to put strain on a relationship – even before you’ve left home. Like the glossy brochures, they don’t always live up to expectations. Expectations can play funny tricks on you though. I know at least one person who thinks that it’s better to expect nothing so you won’t be disappointed; and another who believes that our unconscious expectations dictate everything that happens. Couples often unnecessarily expect the worst from a break-up. They may have watched their parents’ divorce from the sidelines or seen friends split up. They may have come to expect that separation is full of anger and acrimony, and that a divorce always means a bitter court dispute. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I specialise in collaborative family law. It’s a style of family law in which each person has their own collaborative lawyer and we all work together in a team to help the couple reach a fair settlement. There’s no game playing, no point scoring, and no one wins or loses . Any financial or legal advice is given openly for all to hear. This prevents misunderstandings, builds trust, and helps create the right

conditions to enable an out of court settlement, even in the most difficult of cases. To make the collaborative process work, a couple needs to be committed to doing the right thing. That’s not always easy but once a settlement is reached it’s a lot easier for the couple involved to maintain an ongoing relationship. This is especially important for people who will continue to share childcare responsibilities. In my experience, whenever people work together collaboratively to find their own solutions, success becomes a source of quiet pride and makes it easier to move on. When I am helping people though this process I always keep in mind that the breakdown of a marriage or civil partnership is an emotional event with legal consequences, not the other way round. For this reason I encourage my clients to work closely with therapists and life coaches (we call them Family Consultants) who understand the collaborative process and can help them look after themselves emotionally and stay on track. One final difference between me and a traditional solicitor is that I can meet with both halves of a couple at the start of the collaborative process to explain how it all works and suggest other collaborative lawyers who the couple might approach to be part of the team.

City College gets buzzing with studio school plans A possible site for The Hive is in college buildings in Preston Road, Brighton

Frank le Duc YOU WILL have to get used to the jokey puns. So let's get them out of the way: The buzz is getting louder about a new school planned to open in September 2015. And students there will be as busy as bees. The name of the school? The Hive. No ordinary name – for no ordinary school. It will be a studio school catering for up to 300 students, aged 14 to 19, with an emphasis on creative and digital media. The school is the brainchild of City College Brighton and Hove and Lynn Thackway, its principal. Ms Thackway set up the first national pilot studio school in 2007, when she worked at the Barnfield Federation in Luton. She said that studio schools were a new type of school, which were more vocational and encouraged enterprise - although they retained a strong focus on core academic skills. They are intended to tackle the growing gap between the skills and knowledge that young

people need to succeed and those provided by the current education system. Classes are from 9am to 5pm - and teaching focuses on learning through real work and business projects. Ms Thackway is keen for the school to be in the centre of Brighton, preferably in an underused building which can be reached easily by public transport. Given the overhaul planned for City College’s main Pelham Street campus, a number of possibilities exist there. City College also has a site in Preston Road by the railway viaduct, where plumbing skills are currently taught. The courses there are expected to be moved to another location in Brighton, creating another possibility for The Hive. Itziar Leighton, the college's director of commercial and enterprise, said that The Hive would be good for businesses as well as for students. Among more than a dozen employers to have already signed up as supporters of the school are the BBC, Channel 4 and Reuters. Others include Wired Sussex, the two universities in the city, and Latest TV. But it wasn’t the involvement of broadcasters that gave rise to the term studio school. The name owed more to the studios where artists and craftsmen once learned their trades. She said that some of the firms working with other studio schools had made good use of their students. They had been able, for example,

to carry out market research that wouldn’t otherwise have been possible and to tackle logistical projects. The Hive envisaged similar benefits for its business partners. But placements formed only one part of the input from the world of work. Some companies could host visits from students or send speakers or conduct master classes. There was also a need for governors,

directors, sponsors and mentors. Ms Thackway said: “It might not be right for every pupil but there are many benefits. A studio school would offer diversity that isn’t available in the city already. “We’ve got children who are underachieving for a number of reasons. This sort of school offers a different way of learning that’s been successful elsewhere and suits this sort of city.”

Brighton Station cycle hub wins approval SOUTHERN RAILWAY has been given planning permission to build a cycle hub at Brighton Station. The three-storey building will provide storage for 500 bikes. With 80 existing bicycle parking spaces being lost to make way for the building, the station will have about 670 parking spaces when work is completed. The cycle hub will also house showers and changing rooms, a cycle shop and café. Cyclists will be able to hire bikes and take their own bikes there for repairs. The hub will be run as a not-for-profit scheme with funding from Southern Rail, Network Rail, Brighton and Hove City Council, and the Department for Transport. A group of 13 members of the Lower Goods Yard Traders Association objected to the proposal. They said that the modern

design and excessive scale were not in keeping with the station’s listed building status. They also said that the building would be severe and over-dominant, would create a wind tunnel and lead to a loss of light for those operating out of the Trafalgar Street Arches. There were also concerns about the impact on local businesses, including a cycle shop and cafés. Councillors Bill Randall, Mike Jones and Lynda Hyde were disappointed the proposed building did not have either solar panels or a green roof; Councillor Graham Cox said that it was not the most beautiful building in the world but it was overdue; Councillor Leo Littman called for charging points for electric bikes. The scheme was approved unanimously by the city council's planning committee on Wednesday.

Festival reveals feast of digital delights

Open studios 2012: zero G media, a creative-led digital media agency, with offices in Brighton and Hove

THE BIGGEST celebration of digital arts and culture in Brighton and Hove is announcing today (Friday) the first series of confirmed events for 2013. Brighton Digital Festival, now in its third year, will feature more than 100 events located across the city throughout the month of September. They include new digital art exhibitions, performances, conferences, meet-ups, workshops and outdoor events held in several spaces across Brighton. Large well-established conferences

return to the festival, including dConstruct, Reasons to be Creative (previously Flash on the Beach), and Improving Reality – all of which attract international audiences. Mini Maker Faire - having attracted more than 7,000 people in 2012 - also returns for its third year, on Saturday, September 7 at the Corn Exchange. Families are encouraged to attend and celebrate the Maker movement whereby “makers” share what they are learning and making. This year will include a giant

knitting robot, laser-printed trains, a 3D body-scanner, and a social-media-powered photo booth. The Open Studios programme – details of which will be released from August 12 also returns for five days from September 23 to 27. Brighton-based digital, media and creative companies, including Hove-based Crunch Accounting, will open their doors to the public, offering a unique behindthe-scenes glimpse of work and life inside. There will be interactive activities, seminars

and workshops. The Rise And Fall Of Geo Goynes is a new outdoor, interactive event, created by Roots Experience and taking place during the festival’s closing week; the exact dates have still to be finalised. Using digital technology and theatre, members of the public will be guided on a journey across the city for the ultimate real-life gaming experience. More than 40,000 visitors - including families, professionals, and admirers of digital art - are expected to attend and participate in the numerous events throughout Brighton. The festival is guided by a voluntary steering group and Wired Sussex; it is funded by Arts Council England and Brighton and Hove City Council. Sponsorship support is from American Express and RAP Interiors. Brighton & Hove Independent is officially the local media parter. Architectural legacy - not this lunacy! Mike Holland

S T AY H I LT O N

OCCASIONALLY, really crackpot ideas crop up - and it just so happens that this one affects something I am passionate about. If you agree - and if you can add your voice

to mine by writing to Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning department - then we may be able to stop this lunacy. Below is a letter I have sent to our planners.

Do you agree with Mike Holland? Let us know your thoughts. Email: views@ brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk. Twitter: @BrightonIndy

GO OU T.

I wish to object, on behalf of The British Engineerium, to planning application BH2013/02096 (new three-storey primary school building, Hove Park Depot, The Droveway, Hove). The land that the application is made for is - and always has been – part of the Engineerium Conservation Area. As you are aware, we have always expressed an interest in expanding The British Engineerium into that space, if the council decided it no longer required use of the section of land. Quite clearly, the council does no longer require that land and I hereby call upon you to give us first refusal. Which is only fair and correct.

We were waiting until 2015, which is our projected reopening date, before making representations to you again. But this current proposal has brought matters to a head. Our proposal is that we would wish to extend our visitor attraction to house The Brooking Architectural Museum Trust, which has the finest collection of architectural salvage in the country. The collection is used as a teaching resource by conservation professionals, universities, schools, surveyors and their students, crafts apprentices and private individuals. This valuable archive is considered legendary in the world of conservation and is unique, in that it offers a hands-on experience. We are also proposing to create an indoor Victorian street leading to the collection, housing small cottage industry and replicating life as it was in Victorian Brighton and Hove. This will make a truly great addition to The British Engineerium - and a great coup for our city in bringing The Brooking National Collection to Hove. It is currently housed in Surrey. Additionally, we do not believe a school is best situated in this location. While we will not be having any on-site traffic at The British Engineerium, other than deliveries, we believe a school with 600-plus students will undoubtedly generate considerable traffic and it is nonsense to suggest the contrary. Show me a school anywhere that parents do not drop off and pick up children - and then imagine that happening in the close that is the Droveway. I can assure you that it is already a no-go area at certain times of the day from the movements of the 3,000 or so office employees in the neighbouring new office blocks. Please take our objections to this proposal seriously, because the ramifications of passing this application are extremely serious. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss our proposal further with you. But, in any event, a school proposal is totally inappropriate in this location. Yours faithfully,

First guest house joins Living Wage campaign A CAMPAIGN encouraging businesses in Brighton and Hove to commit to paying all staff a minimum of £7.45 an hour has signed up its first partner from the city’s allimportant tourism sector. Launched last year, the Brighton and Hove Living Wage Campaign has already recruited more than 80 local firms to its volunteer pledge – and this week it added an ethical guest house to the fast-increasing list. Brighton House, an award-winning stopover in Regency Square in Brighton, became the first business from the bulging local hospitality industry to join up – much to the delight of the people behind the campaign. Tracey Allen, manager of Brighton and Hove Living Wage on behalf of the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce, was quick to stress the importance of welcoming the first guest house on board. Mindful of the fact salary bands in areas such as tourism, retail and catering are traditionally lower than in other strong local industries - such as the emerging digital sector - Ms Allen said Brighton House’s decision represented a watershed moment for the campaign. She told the Brighton and Hove Independent: “This is such great news for the campaign and we hope other similar businesses will look to achieve the same status over time. “Creating employment in the city is important but creating well paid employment

helps every business, family and individual." The tourism and hospitality industry currently supports an estimated 14,000 jobs in Brighton So the emergence of a local hotel partner could, according to Ms Allen, not be overstated. And Lucho Zuidema, co-owner of Brighton House, was equally enthusiastic about the tie-in. He said: "We have always viewed a living wage for our staff as a positive business decision. “Satisfied staff present a more comfortable and accommodating demeanour to guests, which in turn makes for happier customers and more repeat business. It’s a win-win.” The current level of £7.45 an hour is set independently and takes into account the basic costs of living in the area; the local drive has already received some high-profile backing, including from Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion. The Green MP heaped praised on the project earlier this year, saying: “A living wage can make a real difference to people’s lives by helping to ensure lowincome workers earn enough to provide for themselves and their families, and to offer them a secure margin in case circumstances change. “With people across the city facing a toxic combination of skyrocketing living costs, stagnant wages and cuts on jobs and

Brighton House, award-winning guest house

services, the huge gulf between rich and poor looks set to widen so I’m delighted that many local businesses have already signed up to the campaign and hope to see many more showing their commitment to fair pay in the city.” Other companies already signed up to the scheme, which is funded by the city council, include Brighton & Hove Independent, Latest Homes, and The Brighthelm Centre. Julia Chanteray, president of the chamber

of commerce, added: "We welcome Brighton House, in particular, as our first hospitality business to sign up - and we encourage all those in this sector to join them. In the meantime, I’m going to recommend that all my friends who come to visit the city stay at Brighton House.” For more information, visit: www. livingwagebrighton.co.uk. Twitter: BHLivingWage

Introducing "The Book Doctor"

Cold Comfort Farm, by Stella Gibbons

Greg Hadfield LAURA LOCKINGTON is all things bookish. She is a novelist (Capers in the Sauce, Stargazy Pie, Cupboard Love, The Cornish Affair) and has written plays for BBC Radio 4, one of which was a comedy set in a Brighton beach hut. She runs The Bookish Supper Society, from Naked Eye Gallery in Farm Mews, Farm Road, Hove. Thus she combines two passions of hers: books and food. In addition, she is a member of the Collected Works team, which organises City Reads, the annual citywide reading festival in the autumn. “We read to know that we are not alone, she says. "Books can offer solace and joy, no matter what is happening in our lives. Need a cure for tired old reading habits? Or an inoculation against boring book choices? A prescription from the book doctor will set you to rights.” This week, Brighton & Hove Independent is pleased to welcome Laura, who lives in central Brighton, as a regular contributor and columnist. For more information about The Bookish Supper Society, visit: www.facebook.com/ TheBookishSupperSociety.

Laura Lockington is The Book Doctor

Laura Lockington I THOUGHT I’d open the book doctor surgery with an old favourite. This is a comfort re-read for me. And it’s as fresh and funny and familiar as my favourite dressing gown. Flora Poste is the wonderful woman who dominates this comedy, set in Howling, an imaginary village deep in the Sussex countryside. It’s written in the 1930s and is a parody of the purple prose and wild romance of those times. Certain passages are highlighted to get you

in on the joke, not that we need them, because from the moment we start reading we know we are being led by a master of the light-handed touch of modern humour. The phrase “something nasty in the woodshed” springs from here, and is muttered by the matriarch of the family – Aunt Ada Doom, who rules the wonderfully named Starkadders from her bedroom. Rumour has it that the countryside around Brighton still gets tourists looking for Howling and Cold Comfort Farm, and I’m sure many an enterprising farmer has made a few pounds showing gullible holidaymakers around

stockyards and fields. I overheard two very well-dressed women cooing “My dear, it’s just too Cold Comfort for words...” when I was Ditchling a few weeks ago. (To be fair, Ditchling is quite Cold Comfort...). But that’s the joy of the book. You feel as though you are part of a glorious joke that you instantly recognise. This is the perfect prescription for anyone who is generally dissatisfied with modern-day books. If you haven’t read it, you are in for a treat. If you have read it, do yourself a favour, make a cup of tea and settle down for a comfort re-read of the highest order.

• The number of referrals to our women’s centre has increased significantly this year due to a reduction in services offered by other agencies

Brighton and Hove Tom Smith THE CENSUS gives us the most detailed picture we have about people and communities across the United Kingdom. Collected every 10 years since 1801, the wealth of data coming out of the most recent 2011 census helps show how Brighton and Hove is changing over time. This is powerful stuff for social researchers, charities and the public sector - putting numbers on big social trends that

affect us all - such as city growth, migration levels, increasing importance of the digital economy, and the pressure on local schools, social care and other services. But it’s not just academic interest. Data helps determine how our taxes are dividedup between different local areas, so it has a big input into how much cash is available for services in the city. The council and other public and community agencies use the census to plan and target services to the diverse neighbourhoods and communities

Steep cost of rents in “unaffordable” city

Brighton and Hove is a rental hotspot, according to the study

Frank le Duc RENTING in the private sector in Brighton and Hove can cost up to two-thirds of a couple’s monthly income, according to a think-tank’s study. The study highlights the financial struggle for low- to middle-income families and points out that the rising cost of deposits has put mortgages out of reach for many. It also flags up the shortage of social housing, such as council homes and those let by housing associations. The study – entitled Home Truths and published by the Resolution Foundation said: “Even a very modest rented home is beyond the reach of low-income households in 33 per cent of all local authority areas.”

The think-tank analysed the cost of living in every local authority area for a couple earning an average income of £22,000 a year. Its analysis suggested that a couple without children in a typical one-bedroom property owned by a private landlord would need to spend 36 per cent to 54 per cent of their income on rent. They would need to spend between 39 per cent and 58 per cent of their income on a mortgage. The think-tank said: “One third of Britain is effectively off-limits to lower-income working families looking to rent a home privately because they can no longer afford a property in those parts of the country. The study also suggested that the

demand for private rentals, coupled with low interest rates, meant that rents were now more expensive than monthly mortgage repayments in almost half of the country. It said: “Private renting is increasingly the only option for millions of families who are not wealthy enough to afford a buyer’s deposit nor vulnerable enough to qualify for social housing. “Most low- to middle-income households under the age of 35 (52 per cent) are now private renters.” The study also said: “Moving to areas where housing is very affordable may not be sensible for many low to middle income families whose finances are squeezed by high housing costs because there may not be adequate employment and other

opportunities in these inexpensive areas. “Similarly, it highlights the importance for local authorities to consider the relationship between housing and other economic factors when planning where to locate new housing supply.”

The Home Truths study coincides with publication of an online calculator created by the BBC to allow users to find out where they can afford to live in England, Scotland and Wales - with a sliding scale of rent payments showing which areas remain within their reach. It is based on pricing and rental data provided by Hometrack, residential property analysts. For a one-bedroom home - the calculator shows that more than £700 a month would be needed for a property

that is mid-priced for the local market in Brighton and Hove. This would be more than enough to rent similar properties in 85 per cent of the country. A one-bedroom home at the cheaper end of the market would cost £695 in Brighton and Hove, more expensive than 83 per cent of the country. For two-bedroom rental properties, the monthly rents in Brighton and Hove are put at £900, at the cheaper end; £995, for a midpriced property; and £1,150, for a home at the most expensive end of the local market.

Brighton celebrates much more than summer

Left: Charity Director Frances Duncan with Fundraising Co-ordinator Vy Shepherd and Deputy Mayor Councillor Bill Randall. Right: Gill Mitchell with Jeffrey Goldhill and Curriculum and Advice Service Manager at WHI Helen Thomas

ALTHOUGH the scorching heat wave provided plenty to celebrate in Brighton, last week, The Whitehawk Inn had even more reason to revel. On Wednesday 10th July, the proud organisation celebrated the momentous achievements of all its learners and those who have contributed to its on-going success. Presentations of awards were made to more than thirty students and volunteers. The learners were nominated by their tutors for having shown exceptional

qualities with some having excelled in their studies, others who had overcome personal barriers to achieve their goals and some who had used their skills to help others. The Centre, which is extremely well respected by residents and businesses across the City as well as the local council, welcomed such dignitaries as Deputy Mayor Councillor Bill Randall, Chief Executive, Brighton and Hove City Council Penny Thompson, Councillors

Gill Mitchell, Warren Morgan and Chaun Wilson. Also attending the day was charity patron, Former Chief Superintendent, Sussex Police Brighton and Hove Graham Bartlett. Looking very proud to be a part of this great day, Deputy Mayor Bill Randall said: "It's always good to go to The Whitehawk Inn but the Awards Day for volunteers and customers is very special. I met inspirational people doing extraordinary things in and for their

communities and it's The Whitehawk Inn that makes it all possible." The day, which was celebrated in glorious sunshine, honoured the fine work of the charity which, since its inauguration in 1999, has helped over 7000 local people to find a new direction, become more active and involved in learning and finding ways back into the community and into work. The past decade has seen the charity succeed in supporting almost five hundred people into employment.

Big data is big business Sam Zindel Sam Zindel is a data strategist at iCrossing Digital Marketing, based in Brighton. Here, he invites us to take a swim into the sea of data that surrounds us. THE NEXT decade will be defined and shaped by data. Fact. And here’s another fact: businesses that don’t capitalise on the opportunity data offers will lose out to those that do. Sir Tim Berners Lee, founding father of the web, once said: “It’s difficult to imagine the power that you’re going to have when so many different sorts of data are available.” In 2013, data-processing capabilities have reached the dizzy heights of what is known as”Big Data” – which, in a nutshell, means we can process large volumes of structured and unstructured data from multiple sources in a timeframe that permits intelligent decisionmaking and actions.

Furthermore, data has never been visualised better, nor has it been more shareable - while the cost of storing and processing data has never been so low. All of this considered, the Big Data world is a symphony of insight, an orchestra of opensource technology, which - when given to the right conductor - has the potential to make your business hum like never before. Data is not identified as an asset on a business balance sheet. But it can’t be long before this is changed. Since the first days of customer relationship management systems (CRMs), data has been the most potent marketing weapon, with only the creative department ranked above it when defining a brand or product to consumers. This has shifted now, and will continue to do so as the mathematicians and data scientists play increasingly-vital roles in everything from budgetary and financial planning to marketing and promotional activity. Like looking up at the night sky and being reminded just how small we really are, trying to get your head around how much data is created every day is mind-boggling. But, in a customer-centric landscape, you don’t

need to feel overwhelmed by the volume and variety of the data available to your business. You should instead focus on building a data strategy that supports your objectives. Imagine if you could gather all the stars and planets into a bag and pull out the ones that had life on them. That would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it? Well that’s the scale of the data-insight being undertaken by big businesses. Whether it is creating a personalised internet experience (Google), connecting you to the rest of the world (Facebook), or underpinning an American election campaign (President Obama’s well-documented “Analytics for America”), studying the trends and patterns in large datasets is an effective investment to gain competitive advantage. For smaller operations, the opportunities are equally exciting. A list of email addresses and some third-party demographic data is no longer enough. You need to be more ambitious. Who are your customers? How do they behave? Where do they hang out? When is the right time to engage with them? What tone of voice do they respond to? These are just some of the questions that businesses

need to ask themselves in order to best serve the market in which they operate. I’ll end, however, with a word of caution. Transforming your business to become more data-driven is a long process and the return on investment is often years rather than months down the line. For many businesses, starting small is an effective first step. How many e-commerce businesses can claim that their web analytics are 100% accurate? Shoot for the moon and you might end up in the stars. But there’s always a chance you might land in the sea. Sam Zindel is organiser of the “Big Data” Brighton meet-up group. He will be co-hosting “Big Data Storytelling”, a hackathon and gallery exhibition at this year’s Brighton Digital Festival.

Bringing Diabetes Specialists to your home

Diane Quinn THE idea to set up a business as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse was first suggested to me by one of my patients while working for the NHS. I then got a letter from another patient's spouse to say thank you for how much I had changed both their lives in so many ways now that their spouse's Diabetes was better controlled. The idea to see patients in their own home was a concept I thought up due to my own stresses of having to find parking in London (which was very expensive) for my own Diabetes appointments. I myself have lived with Type 1 Diabetes for over 34 years using several different insulins and finally deciding the only way to improve my Hba1c (blood test) was to use an insulin pump. I thought how nice it would be to be seen in the luxury of my own

home and an appointment time and date that suited me - so now I have set up this business and called it Diabetes at Home. It is the first and only Diabetes service in the uk where by you can be seen at home by a Diabetes Specialist Nurse privately. Here is some of what I can do for patients: - Improve glucose control/ Hba1c - Insulin starts - Review tablets and insulin regimes - Hypo management - Diet and lifestyle advice I have a passion for Diabetes and helping both patients and Health Care Professionals to understand this condition better. Diabetes at Home will enable me to accomplish my dream of teaching nurses in hospital environments/Nursing Homes or as part of their away days to improve their knowledge. It was while working as a Practice Nurse I obtained a Diploma in Diabetes Management. This then lead to me to wanting to specialize in Diabetes -so I found myself moving to Brighton. I trained at the local Royal Sussex County Hospital and this beautiful city and countryside has now become my dream home by the sea and dream job. If you would like an appointment with Diane please call 07711 964054.

Roll up, roll up! For Brighton’s new market Both temporary and permanent pitches will be available when the market re-opens, which is due to be in November. The market, transformed at a cost of £18 million, will provide a platform for local traders and producers, with a focus on promoting fresh, healthy food, as well as organic and ethically-sourced produce and eco-friendly goods. There are 45 permanent stalls arranged around the new covered market space, varying in size from 140 sq ft to 437 sq ft – many with a yard that can be used for trading. Average rents are £15.50 per square foot per year. Temporary stalls, measuring 8ft by 4ft, are available from £20 a day. There are also 12 new workshops, owned by the Ethical Property Company, where local artists and creative organisations can make and sell their goods. A market was first established in the area after the First World An £18m transformation for Brighton Open Market War, when mainly ex-servicemen APPLICATIONS are being invited for traders started trading from barrows in nearby to lease and run stalls in the redeveloped Oxford Street. Brighton Open Market in London Road. The new market will be run by the

Brighton Open Market, a community interest company (CIC), which has representatives from the market traders, the council, the Ethical Property Company, and The Hyde Group, the award-winning housing association that has developed the site. The CIC will also have independent directors. The regeneration is funded by the development by Hyde of 87 affordable homes for local people, which will be both for rent and for shared ownership (part-buy/partrent) for local people. Substantial environmental improvements to neighbouring Francis Street will see it become an attractive shared space for cars, cyclists and pedestrians. About 100 full-time-equivalent jobs will be supported in the completed scheme; an additional 80 full-time jobs were created during construction. Market-traders will benefit from CCTV, full-time cleaners, toilets, waste disposal, regular advertising, a website, visiting themed markets, and an arts programme - in the central square - that will help to increase footfall and drive trade. Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the city council's economic development committee, said: “The market company is striving to make it a unique, thriving place specialising in good-quality, locally-sourced, traceable

food and environmentally-friendly goods. "The market itself will be a place which has regular, loyal customers as well as becoming a magnet for visitors. It will be a vital component in seeing a revival in the fortunes of the London Road. The city is full of brilliant people with ideas. The market will be a place where these can take root and thrive.” Tom Shaw, assistant director (development) of Hyde, said: “The regeneration of the Open Market quarter is on track to finish later this year, with the new market helping to anchor London Road and becoming a destination in its own right. "The market will provide an enhanced facility for the community and provide a haven for small, independent local traders. The launch of the applications for the new market stalls is a very exciting milestone to have been reached in the project. We look forward to the new market throwing open its doors to the public.” Application forms to become a trader can be downloaded from www.brightonopenmarket. co.uk. Further details about the workshops can be found by visiting www.ethicalproperty.co.uk/ brightonopenmarket

Arts & Entertainment NOW SHOWING AT CINEWORLD…

Monsters University (3D) (U) Running time: 110 mins Director: Dan Scanlon Starring: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Joel Murray, Sean Hayes, Dave Foley, Peter Sohn, Charlie Day, Alfred Molina, Nathan Fillion, Aubrey Plaza

What’s it all about? Directed by Dan Scanlon, Monsters University is a prequel to Pixar’s 2001 hit Monsters Inc. As a young, green, one-eyed blob, Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) visits Monsters Inc on a school trip and is told that if he wants to follow his dream of becoming a professional scarer, he should study hard and attend Monsters University. When he arrives on campus he meets classmate James ‘Sulley’ Sullivan (John Goodman), who figures he doesn’t need to 2/7/13

study and can coast through university on his famous scarer father’s legacy. However, when the pair fall foul of scary Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren), they are both threatened with expulsion unless they can work together and win the annual team-based Scare Games. Unfortunately, the only team left with open slots is the Oozma Kappa fraternity, a housecomprised entirely of nerdy nohopers: chubby, middle-aged avuncular Don (Joel Murray), double-headed, argumentative Terry/Terri (Sean Hayes/ Dave Foley), timid blob-with-five-eyes Squishy (Peter Sohn) and furry archshaped monster Art (Charlie Day).

The Good Crystal and Goodman are both excellent as Mike and Sulley and their sparky interaction is just as strong here as it was twelve years ago, with both characters also getting scenes that are slightly more emotional this time round. However, next to the two familiar central characters, the supporting cast feel a little underdeveloped (particularly Mirren’s Dean Hardscrabble). The film is beautifully animated throughout, with (literally) eye-poppingly bright colours and a wealth of background detail and character design work that should ensure repeated viewings on DVD. Similarly, the script provides a constant

The Bad Aside from the underdeveloped supporting cast and a slightly confused message about cheating, the film is also let down by a disappointing climax that lacks both the dramatic and emotional weight of the previous film. Similarly, the lack of big laughs is a problem and the film in general is somehow missing what might be termed ‘the Pixar magic’, perhaps because, as this is a prequel, we know that everything works out okay in the end, so nothing is really at stake and there are no delightful surprises. Worth seeing? Some niggling issues aside, Monsters University is still an enjoyable and beautifully animated prequel that should prove a hit with both adults and children, though it never hits the dizzy heights of its predecessor. THREE out of Five stars stream of amusing gags (though it never quite hits the heights of belly laughs) and there’s a curiously downbeat but nonetheless refreshingly realistic central message about accepting your limitations (this works because we know from the outset that Mike never becomes a scarer, so we brace ourselves for the moment that he lets go of his dream).

Entertaining, beautifully animated Pixar prequel with superb voice performances, a constant stream of amusing gags and an oddly realistic central message, though the supporting characters are underdeveloped and it lacks the magic touch that made the original film so special.

Tesco food appeal collects 3.5 million meals for people in need GENEROUS customers helped to donate an incredible 3.5 million meals during Tesco’s National Food Collection appeal on the 5 and 6 July, the equivalent of 26,000 trolley-loads of food. Tesco held the appeal in partnership with Foodbanks charity, the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity, FareShare in every one of its stores across the UK after new research showed nearly one in five people had suffered from some form of food poverty in the last twelve months. With school summer holidays approaching, the research also showed parents found the holidays a particularly difficult time to provide food for their children with as many as 70% of families currently suffering from food poverty relying on food given out by schools. During the collection, customers were asked to donate non-perishable food items such as long-life milk, cereals and tinned vegetables and fruit. The food, weighing in at 1,500 tonnes, will now be transported to regional FareShare depots and local foodbanks across the country to help people in times of crisis. The total amount collected includes Tesco’s 30% top up and collections in Tesco’s dedicated online grocery delivery centres. Tesco plans to introduce permanent collection points in some of its stores before

its next national collection in December. Rebecca Shelley, Group Corporate Affairs Director at Tesco said: “Once again, our customers have shown extraordinary generosity and made this the biggest food collection the UK has ever seen – so thank you to everyone who donated. Together with the extra 30% that Tesco has contributed, the food we collected will help hundreds of thousands of people in need across the UK. “The work we do with the Trussell Trust and FareShare plays a vital role in making sure people have access to food in times of crisis, especially as food poverty is increasing in the UK. “I’d also like to say a special thanks to all our colleagues and the volunteers who made the collection possible - we’re incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.” Lindsay Boswell, CEO of FareShare said: “With more people turning to charities for food than at any other time in FareShare’s history, we know the summer holidays are going to be difficult for many. At a time of such need we are incredibly grateful to Tesco customers for their generosity. Thanks to you we will be able to provide the 900 charities we support across the country with even more food. These charities offer not only a meal but invaluable support to some of the poorest people in our society. With more than a third of these organisations helping to

feed vulnerable children, your support really will help the thousands of families struggling to afford food this summer.” Chris Mould, Chairman of the Trussell Trust said: “In the last three months alone Trussell Trust foodbanks have given three days’ emergency food to over 150,000 people in crisis and we know that the summer holidays can tip many low-income families over the edge. The extraordinary generosity of tens of thousands of members of the public across the UK at Tesco last weekend will help foodbanks to stop thousands of families from facing hunger this summer. We’re immensely grateful to Tesco for their invaluable support, the 30 percent top up

is a wonderful gift to our foodbanks which will make the public’s donations go much further.” Tesco customers at the Park Road Extra store in Liverpool proved to be the most generous in the UK, donating the equivalent of nearly 21,000 meals, including Tesco’s 30% top up, to people in need. Customers at the Grahams Road store in Falkirk donated a fantastic 10,000 meals to become the most generous customers in Scotland, while the Pontypridd Extra in Wales collected more than 6,200 meals. In Northern Ireland, the Bentrim Road store in Lisburn collected an impressive 6,600 meals for people in need.

Fashion & Lifestyle Something borrowed, something blue, parents pay for son to say “I do” WHILE the summer may have only just arrived, wedding season has been in full flow since May, which could be bad news for parent's pockets. Research by Saga Home Insurance shows that half of parents aged 50 to 69 are planning to pay for their children's wedding. It seems that this age group are still traditionalists at heart when it comes to weddings, as a third are planning to pay for their daughter's special day (29%). However, weddings have become so expensive that a fifth of parents now intend to cover the cost of their son's big day. Parents planning to cover their children's wedding costs could change their mind when they see the bill. Whether their daughter wants a horse drawn carriage or their son wants to say "I do" abroad, the average wedding could now set parents back a whopping £20,000. Paying for weddings seems to run in the family, as parents are more likely to pay for their children's big day if they didn't have to pay for their own. In fact, parents who received any financial help with their special day are more inclined to chip in for their

own children's wedding. Saga Home Insurance understands that many parents over 50 will be helping their children out in some way or another on their big day. So Saga increases its contents cover by 20% one month before and one month after the big day, so parents have peace of mind that all wedding paraphernalia will be covered. Emma Soames, editor-at-large, Saga Magazine, commented: "The only way to give your child the wedding of their dreams is for both sets of parents to contribute. I have discovered this as my own daughter is getting married this summer and it seems to be the norm these days for the parents in law to contribute. Costs can be enormous especially since a girl's implacable desire to dance in her wedding dress means that there is normally a celebratory meal for quite large numbers of people before they hit the dance floor. I have heard many horror stories of robberies occurring while houses are empty during wedding services or receptions so having adequate insurance is vital."

Horoscopes Aries There may be some bruised egos this week that you will find it difficult to deal with. Whatever the temptation, don’t run away and don’t lose your cool. Maintain your poise and you will further expose the petulant behavior of your combatant. You will have a busy social calendar this week but don’t forget to take care of your health.

Horoscopes from Kimi 19th July - 25th July

Taurus You know what you mean but do others? Be careful what you say and who you say it to. Things said in haste are open to misinterpretation and you could find yourself at worst giving a groveling apology, at best slightly embarrassed. A great week for parties, just make sure they are healthy pool ones and not alcohol fuelled.

Cancer A good time to splash the cash. The feeling of well being and admiration this engenders will more than compensate for the loss in your coffers. Just make sure you do your homework before you make the big purchase and all will be well. A great week for travel too so that big purchase could be a car or holiday!

Gemini Something is going to spring up unexpectedly this week. It could be an old friendship that is rekindled, you may be given a bonus you were not expecting or it could be that you are given a much needed and unasked for push up the corporate ladder. The good news is whichever unexpected event occurs it will be positive.

Leo Your communication skills are at a high. You may be entering into negotiations, albeit on a friendship or social level, that will prove to be quite lucrative to you. You have been on a bit of an emotional roller coaster of late so this week would also be a good time to take a break, if not a full holiday.

Got any fashion tips? @BrightonIndy

Brits want a bank holiday to celebrate the Royal baby ON THE EVE of the Royal birth, 48% of the nation believes we should wake up to an additional days holiday to celebrate the impending Royal arrival, according to a Great British Moments survey of 1,000 members of the British public conducted by Greenall’s Original London Dry Gin. The survey reveals our views on Great British moments including bank holidays, the monarchy and our favourite tipple, the G&T. Inspired by the generosity of the additional public holidays the nation enjoyed to celebrate the Royal Wedding in 2011 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, almost half of the UK believe we should be offered a similar day to celebrate the birth of the future King or Queen. 70% want another bank holiday Whether or not to mark a Royal celebration, a landslide 70% of the UK has requested an additional Bank Holiday, as the UK currently has 8 bank holidays compared to the US who get 11 bank holidays, Austria 12 and our French counterparts who receive 13.

Virgo At times you are like the sun and the rest of us mere mortals are drawn to you as moths to a flame. This is one such time. You are giving off some high octane energy. Kids, partners, and co-workers are all under your spell. Be careful to direct this energy wisely and cautiously. Misdirected it could descend into chaos. Libra You are highly tuned to picking up on feelings of change and you are certainly sensing things this week. The changes that occur will take place gradually over the forthcoming weeks and they may not be all material or physical. You are going through a transitional spiritual phase too where you question your own belief systems and emotional attachments. Scorpio You could be having a bit of a tough time of it. You may feel put upon or even discriminated against. Don’t go running off to court just yet even though legal issues are forecast. Explain clearly why you feel aggrieved and try to settle the matter informally if you can. Those legal issues relate to property not work! Sagittarius Your journey this week is unlikely to be an emotional one but will be more on the physical plane. It is unlikely,

Almost half of survey participants want the additional bank holiday to fall within the height of the summer months so Brits can capitalise on the hottest time of the year. It is suggested that an extra day’s holiday would help ease the increasing stress levels felt by workers and improve the quality of life for families across the UK. “The people have spoken; Brits want another Bank Holiday. There are so many fantastic Great British moments, it would be lovely to have one more day to celebrate and share these as a nation. And what better way to toast the occasion than with a classic British gin & tonic,” says Sinead O’Frighil, Global Brands Development Manager at Greenall’s Gin. The survey also found out that Britain’s favourite alcoholic drink is a Gin & Tonic, a classic cocktail that has been synonymous with British culture since the late seventeenth century. Not only do 35% of people say it is their tipple of choice, but nearly half (49%) of the UK believes that it is also the Queen’s favourite drink.

though possible, that the journey will be a pleasure trip. It is much more likely to be tied up with education or training. View this as not so much a task as recognition of your future value. Capricorn Personal relationships will be tested this week with your partner/loved ones beginning to wonder what you are about. You need to open up a little and share your thoughts and feelings if you are to get the true connection you not only desire but need. A good week for business, new and lucrative deals could be on the table! Aquarius If you are on your own get out there and socialize. This is a great week for meeting new and interesting people and utilizing some of those flirting skills you have been hiding of late. Try to keep your flirtatious side out of the work place though as it may be misconstrued as gamesmanship and could backfire. Pisces Well how will that person get your attention then? Do they have to club you on the head and drag you off or carry a full page ad in the Times? Subtlety is not your strong point and sometimes you are just a little too oblivious to the signs. Relax, enjoy and by the way stop being so hyper sensitive!

The fastest taxi driver in the world

WELL-KNOWN to viewers of BBC Top Gear, Sabine Schmitz is preparing to make her Silverstone Classic (26-28 July) debut racing a 220mph Porsche 962 in one of the massive event’s thrilling races for Group C prototypes.

The 44-year-old German first came to fame as the ‘fastest taxi driver in the world’, a title she gained for driving passengers around the full 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit at very high speeds. Over the past decade Schmitz has made regular appearances on Top Gear –most memorably when claiming all she needed was a Transit van to beat Jeremy Clarkson’s best lap time around the fearsome Nordschleife in a Jaguar S-type diesel. It was a challenge she only just failed to master in a later show. As well as being a television personality both in the UK and Germany, Schmitz is also a notable racing driver. Indeed, she was the first woman to taste victory in a major 24-hour race when winning the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 1996 – a feat she repeated the following year, too. At the Silverstone Classic, Schmitz will be sharing a Porsche 962 with Klaus Abbelen in the two spectacular showdowns for Group C prototypes that raced at Le Mans in the Eighties. “The Porsche 962 is such great car for the purists – I just love driving it,” she said. “Silverstone is the Mecca for all petrolheads and, with all the downforce in the fast sections, racing the 962 is going to be a fantastic experience… if a little painful on the poor old neck muscles!”

Insurance claims show motorists are more honest than ever before THE PROPORTION of honest drivers coming forward after hitting a parked car rather than driving off without leaving details has risen, according to AXA's new Honesty Barometer. AXA car insurance analysed more than 30,000 claims between 2010 and 2012 where a driver had hit a parked car. Claims where the driver came forward following a crash to provide information were separated from those where dishonest motorists drove off without leaving any contact details. Since 2010, the proportion of crashes where the third party was unknown (meaning that the driver whose vehicle hit a parked vehicle did not come forward) has fallen by 16 per cent. The results show that in more than 80 per cent of cases, motorists who hit a parked vehicle made themselves known to the owner and provided their insurance details. This figure highlights the fact that an increasing number of motorists are willing to do the right thing. According to the data, the average crash involving a parked car causes £762.89 worth of damage, although the insurer received claims as high as £16,500. Examination of 2012 figures shows that motorists were most likely to hit a parked car on a Friday, with 1,477 incidents recorded on that day in 2012, compared to 1,046 on a Sunday Amanda Edwards, from AXA car insurance, commented: "This data is remarkable. While we tend to hear horror stories of fraudsters causing deliberate

accidents or faking injuries to receive a payout, the Honesty Barometer proves what we've always believed: that the vast majority of drivers are honest and trustworthy. The data highlights that not only do eight out of ten of us do the right thing and come forward after hitting a parked car, but that this proportion is on the increase. It's reassuring to see that despite facing rising costs, UK motorists are keeping their integrity." Matt Bender, whose car was hit by another vehicle while parked outside his friend's house, commented: "You hear all sorts of horror stories about people hitting a car and then driving off without leaving a note, so when I saw that my car had been dented, I feared the worst. When I came closer though, I saw that the driver had written a really apologetic note, along with her insurance details and a contact number. It's reassuring to know that there are still honest drivers out there that will leave their details."

“It’s going to be an incredible feeling to be racing against so many wonderful cars from that period,” confirmed Abbelen. “For us to be part of something so special is just going to be amazing. We can’t wait.” The two Group C races are now firmly established among the major highlights at the Silverstone Classic, notably the spectacular showdown at dusk on Saturday evening. Every year the entry seems to get stronger and more competitive. Incredibly this year’s grid will include no fewer than six Porsche 962s with ex-F2 racer Herve Regout likely to be the pacesetter. Others to look out for are Japanese speedster Katsu Kubota in his Nissan R90C – a winner at the 2011 Classic – plus the fire-breathing 1989 Mercedes C11 ‘Silver Arrow’ shared by Gareth Evans and triple FIA Thoroughbred Grand Prix champion Bob Berridge. Nic Minassian debuting the world’s sole surviving Jaguar XJR-14, though, will take a lot of beating. As a member of Peugeot factory team, the British-based Frenchman has two Le Mans podiums to his name in 2008 and 2011 and the Ross Brawn-designed purple XJR-14 won the FIA World Sportscar Championship in 1991 when piloted by the likes of Martin Brundle and Derek Warwick. Indeed the evocative Group C field is

truly representative of the era with Jaguar XJR8/9, Martini Lancia LC2s, Spices galore, a Swiss-built Cheetah and the Australian Veskanda-Chevrolet all in the mix. “This year’s two Group C race have all the ingredients to be the most exciting yet,” said Nick Wigley, Event Director. “We have all the most competitive cars and drivers from past years plus the added thrill of Sabine in the 962 and Nic in the incredible XJR-14 which is probably the ultimate Group C racer. The sights and sounds of these fabulous cars racing into the sunset on Saturday evening is going to be very special.” Those wanting to catch what promises to be two epic Group C battles at the unmissable Silverstone Classic must buy tickets in advance. In keeping with the popular event’s widely acclaimed ‘access all areas’ policy, tickets include free entrance to all the special classic car displays, both National and Wing racing paddocks and pit complexes, trackside grandstands, live music concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings plus a host of other entertainment for all ages and interests. Adult admittance is from just £35 (plus fees) and considerable savings are on offer for those festival goers spending the full weekend at Silverstone. Full details can be found on the official silverstoneclassic.com website.

The automatic way to higher gearbox repair bills CARS with automatic transmissions are more likely to fail and when they do they are more expensive to fix than their manual counterparts, according to automotive specialist, Warranty Direct. The gearbox is one of the most expensive parts of a car to repair or replace, with garage costs rising as high as £5,850. But, as the percentage of automatic cars on UK roads continues to rise compared with manual vehicles*, Warranty Direct’s analysis of 50,000 live policies reveals that driving a manual is also cheaper if the ‘box develops a fault. The average cost of repairing an auto gearbox is £1,070.49, while manuals cost, on average, £824.28. One in 80 automatics on the UK’s roads suffers an issue every year, as opposed to one in 180 manuals. Overall, almost quarter of a million cars (240,000) have to visit a garage each year due to a gearbox problem. Duncan McClure Fisher, Warranty Direct Managing Director, said: “Automatic gearboxes are a good example of how technology has become more complex which, in turn, leads to more expensive repairs when things go wrong. “Manufacturers are also increasingly using Direct Shift Gearboxes (DSG) which, by using two independent clutches, can achieve faster gear shift times, but are

also inherently more complicated, advanced systems. “Motorists may be surprised to find prestige marques at the wrong end of our study on gearbox failures but this may be partly down to the proliferation of automatic cars in those manufacturers’ model ranges.” Warranty Direct can protect against unwanted garage bills from as little as £15 a month. Hot prospect Chicksen signs

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION have completed the signing of 21-year-old leftback Adam Chicksen from MK Dons.

The highly-rated defender has signed a three-year deal with Albion, and will link up with his new team-mates for the week-long

trip to Spain. Born and bred in Milton Keynes he is a natural left-sided player, but can also play on the right side of defence and has played in midfield during his time with his hometown club. He has made more than 50 senior appearances since making his debut for MK Dons as a 16-year-old in August 2008. He also had a brief spell on loan at Leyton Orient in January 2012. Albion's head of football operations David Burke commented: "We are delighted that Adam has joined us. Our scouting department have been aware of him and impressed with his progress at MK Dons. "He has all the attributes that we are looking for and already has a good knowledge of our playing style, having come through the ranks at MK Dons. "He has great potential to establish himself in the Championship, and we are delighted that he has chosen Brighton and Hove Albion.

Albion eye move for Latvian international Deniss Rakels

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION have taken Latvian international striker Deniss Rakels on trial. The 21-year-old is currently playing in Poland for Zaglebie Lubin, although he has spent the last two seasons on loan at second tier GKS Katowice where he has impressed. He finished last season with 11 goals and now he is being given the chance to earn a move to Brighton, if he impresses head coach Oscar Garcia. "The offer that came up is satisfying for us and him, so we accepted the invitation from Brighton," Lubin sporting director Pawel Wojtala confirmed. "He will spend one week there, play a friendly and then they will decide." Should Rakels do enough to earn a move, he would become the second Latvian in the squad with compatriot Vitalijs Maksimenko already with the club.

Hull & Norwich show interest in Ashley Barnes IT IS understood that several Premier League and Championship clubs are tracking Brighton striker Ashley Barnes. Barnes is entering the final year of his contract at the Amex Stadium and the 23-year-old has yet to be offered a new deal. The news has alerted a host of Barnes' suitors, with the former Plymouth man establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the Championship. Barnes finished as Brighton's top

scorer in their first season back in the Championship in the 2011-12 campaign with 14 goals and he scored nine goals last term despite missing seven games through suspension. Norwich and Hull are both thought to be admirers of Barnes and are actively monitoring his situation on the south coast. Brighton would be loath to lose Barnes, but they are bracing themselves for bids for the skilful attacker.
