Today marks take-off for The Level RESTORATION of one of Brighton and Hove's most important parks is taking a big leap forward. Most of the southern half of The Level including a remarkable children's playground and a re-located skatepark - opens to the public at 5pm today (Friday). Although renovation of the rest of the park will not be completed until the autumn, the city council was keen to open two of its central features in time for the school summer holidays. Further work will see completion of "dancing' fountains", a sensory garden, tables for board games and pingpong, a pétanque terrain, and a new environmentally-friendly cafe, complete with a chalk grassland green roof. The cafe will be the first Velo, an innovative "cycling cafe" concept created by a team that includes the founder of Small Batch Coffee. The Brighton site is expected to be the first of at least 10 across the southeast within five years. Although it will have a cycling theme, it will seek to be a hub for the whole community - especially those with a healthy and active lifestyle. The Level's historic features from the early 1920s have been restored, including the park pavilions, which will now be used to provide community rooms and exhibition spaces. One pavilion will open with an exhibition based on an oral-history project and interviews with

people with memories of the park's past. Initially, the other pavilion will host a Sussex Police community hub, part of a three-month trial to support responsible use of the area. The restoration project is being undertaken by the council with a £2.2m Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund grant. An Aiming High Grant of £65,000 has also been awarded to help make the park more accessible for all to

Tweets of the Week

Let’s target the selfish “litter losers”

@BrightonHoveCC Just to be clear the amazing Level skate park and play area reopen this Friday 26th, 5pm, not before. See you there!

@bbcweather The UK’s warmest night ever saw a sweltering minimum temp of just 23.9°C on 3 August 1990 in Brighton.

@LEGO_Group Were you enjoying the sunshine at Brighton Pier in the UK yesterday? You may have seen our #LEGOFriendsFlashMob!

@arlenephillips Would it be unkind of me to say that I saw more obese people in Brighton yesterday than in Disneyland in the 90s. What’s happening?

@AimeeMageee Brighton seafront is such a lovely place to be when it’s hot.

Follow us: @BrightonIndy

Jason Kitcat ON THE first weekend of July, council cleaning staff picked up more than 90 tonnes of litter left on the seafront – roughly the same weight as over 20,000 deckchairs. Of the millions of visitors to Brighton and Hove each year, many are responsible and clean up after themselves. A minority, however, just leave their rubbish behind, despite the wide availability of waste and recycling bins across the city centre. As many residents and businesses will know, the problem is worst on the seafront during bursts of good weather, when many people come down to enjoy the beach. Some don’t clear up after their picnics and barbeques. Aside from being an eyesore, abandoned litter harms our local environment, affects trade on the seafront, and can be dangerous when, for example, broken glass is left lying

Photograph: Andrew Hasson (www.andrewhasson.com)

around for the next visitors to walk by. There are hundreds of bins across the city centre, including large litter and recycling bins – including for glass. We also have temporary litter and special barbecue bins along the seafront where they’re most needed. So there’s really no excuse. We recently launched a new Brighton and Hove litter campaign, asking visitors to help keep the beach

clean by disposing of their own rubbish after they leave. Banners and signs will be put up along the seafront reminding people to not be a “litter loser”, and instead keep the beach clean. We’re also supporting other litter campaigns in the city with the same aims. The seafront is a wonderful asset, and the city just isn’t the same when it’s been spoilt by a selfish few.

Together, we can make sure more people bin their rubbish properly and that we keep our beach clean. You can help raise awareness of the campaign by using #BHLitter on Twitter. What more can be done? Let us know your thoughts. Email: views@ brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk. Twitter: @BrightonIndy

The Color Run is a kaleidoscopic 5k Susanna Reid

THE COL OR RUN is a global phenomenon. From its spelling, you can tell it started in the United States - and now it’s coming to Brighton. The “paint race” - founded by Travis Snyder, a Utah-based event producer - has been described as the happiest and most colourful 5k run in the world. Last year, 600,000 people took part in more than 50 events in North America, Australia and Brazil. Runners of all shapes, sizes and speeds start the run wearing only white clothing - a blank canvas for a kaleidoscope of colours they encounter on the course. After each kilometre, a different colour powder - made from 100% eco-friendly and natural foodgrade corn starch - is thrown in the air by volunteers. As a result, runners become, in the words of the organisers, “a constantly-evolving artwork”. At the end of the course, which includes Madeira Drive, runners will be greeted by the Colour Festival, with music and burst of coloured power. Brighton is one of only four UK cities to host the event this year others are Manchester, Belfast and

London, which attracted 15,000 runners earlier this month. More than 60% of color-run runners are reported to be running 5k for the first time; at least 15,000 turned out for the UK’s inaugural event in London in July last year. Stand Up To Cancer, the fundraising partnership between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, is the official charity campaign for The Color Run, whose lead sponsor is Dulux, the paint company. Joe Rafferty, event director of The Color Run (UK), said: “Tens of thousands of runners right across the country have already shown they want more colour in their lives - and we think Brighton might even surpass the demand we’ve seen to date.” Jenny Hall, marketing controller for Dulux, said: “We feel passionately about the positive impact colour can have – both physically and emotionally. We’re proud to be involved and are looking forward to delivering more colour transformations across the UK.” Entries are open for the Brighton Color Run, which is due to take place at 11am on Saturday, September 14. Braybon Avenue is in the pilot area

Continued from page 1 The latest move comes after the DoT introduced new powers, including signage, that enabled enforcement of restrictions by the issue of penalty charge notices. Old signs such as the one in our front-page photographs are currently unenforceable in the way most residents might expect. For many years, the position has been, at best, complex; at worst, it has meant no effective action can be taken against cars parking on verges. Much has depended on which signs are displayed and where - and whether or not there are yellow lines on the adjacent highway. Further complexity is added by the fact that the East Sussex Act 1981 - a local bye law - was adopted by Brighton Borough Council and now Brighton

and Hove City Council. But it does not apply in Hove. Sometimes, penalty charge notices can be issued by civil enforcement officers; sometimes, depending on circumstances, action can be taken only by a police officer or a police community support officer. And then only if the officer witnesses an offence of “driving “ on the verge. Highway Code Rule 145 states: “You must not drive on or over a pavement, footpath or bridleway except to gain lawful access to property, or in the case of an emergency.” If the new pilot schemes are implemented, civil enforcement officers will be able to issue penalty charge notices for vehicles that stop or wait on the grass verge.

Plans for an extra runway at Gatwick Airport could create 19,000 jobs and provide an employment boost here in Brighton. The leader of the city council, however, is firmly against the scheme. Jason Kitcat said: “For job creation, we would be far better off investing the billions of pounds it would cost on creating green jobs.”

A footballer became a surprise off-the-field hit this week after a photo of him saving a seagull appeared on the internet. A photograph of Albion’s two-time player of the year and Scotland international, Liam Bridcutt, rescuing an injured gull became a Twitter hit among fans.

Two impressive new pieces of street art have created a buzz in the North Laine. The Prince Albert pub, near Brighton Station, has a giant tribute to late greats such as Bob Marley and Frank Sidebottom - while a homage to Fatboy Slim appeared on the side of Art Republic.

Just another day on Brighton seafront

IN A single moment - in a single place visitors to Brighton seafront on Sunday witnessed a trio of events, all inspiring in their own ways. At the entrance to Brighton Pier, supporters of the Walk For Women included members of the Labour Party as well as Caroline Lucas, the Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion (top left) – who pointed out

that 356 constituencies in the UK have never had a woman MP. And there have been only 369 women MPs. Also addressing the crowd gathered to mark the centenary of the Suffragists’ “Great Pilgrimage” was Baroness Joyce Gould (bottom right). Passing by were hundreds of families taking part in the fourth “Push for Prems”

(bottom left and top right) - raising money for the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and the nearby Ronald McDonald charity house. “We owe so much to the staff, “ organisers said. “They have saved our babies lives, kept our spirits up when our babies were undergoing major surgery, and supported those of us that have lost babies through prematurity.”

With more than 200 donations, the walk exceeded its target and raised a total of £5,700 on its JustGiving page If you want to add to this, visit: www.justgiving.com/Push-forPrems-2013. Separately, Kristina Rihanoff - star of Strictly Come Dancing - took centre stage in a “flash mob”, with more than 100 young people from Brighton-based Stagecoach Theatre Arts.

Family-friendly fun at digital festival

IT is not just for geeks and other paid-up members of the digerati. In addition to its plethora of conferences, exhibitions and talks, Brighton Digital Festival has announced a range of family-friendly events - including the fantastic Mini Maker Faire, which returns to the Corn Exchange for its third year on Saturday, September 7. There's much more. "Learn to program

with Scratch" invites children aged 10 to 12 to learn and make their own computer games and animations. It’s free and takes place at St Bartholomew's CofE Primary School in Ann Street, Brighton, on Saturday, September 14 at 10am and 2pm. "Glimmers" is another event not to be missed, as it takes groups on a fantasy sci-fi treasure hunt around the city-centre

throughout the month-long festival. Thirdly, "PixelPyro" - a free and interactive digital firework display - will return to Jubilee Square to mark the festival finale on Saturday, September 28. Finally, at the heart of the festival, is an integrated education programme led by Lighthouse, which takes students out of school and puts them directly into the

festival programme, empowering the digital artists and critical engineers of tomorrow. "Teachmeet", an informal teacher-led event, will also invite teachers to share good ideas, practical innovations and personal insights in teaching with technology. Brighton Digital Festival - a grassrootsled, community-run celebration of digital culture - is organised by a blend of companies, organisations, digital art enthusiasts, developers, artists and community groups from Brighton and beyond. The festival reflects Brighton’s unique culture, strong community spirit and thriving digital industry, bringing together companies, professional digital workers and artists. Brighton & Hove Independent is the festival's media partner. Tom Bailey, the festival manager, said: “This September, we will celebrate our third Brighton Digital Festival. Each year has seen a huge expansion in the programme size. And this year is no exception. "The volume and diversity of events taking place this year is testament to the vibrant and world-class artistic and digital communities working and living in and around Brighton. This is an amazing opportunity for people to get involved, learn, play and generally be inspired.” For more information - and to stay up to date with new events, as they are announced - visit: www. brightondigitalfestival.co.uk.

Cut the crap! Times are dire Mike Holland SO BRIGHTON has found its way onto the short list to be in the new "Crap Towns" book. The editor of this dubious publication – a certain Sam Jordison - seems to think we are on a par with the likes of Slough and Grimsby. Mind you, he does write for the Guardian. Which, to me, says it all. The problem is that this, I think, is a first. I don't know about you, but I have never heard of any publication talking that way about our city before. This should be sending out warning signals to each and every one of our elected members, especially the ruling junta who actually seem to believe that all is going swimmingly well. It seems we are all living in one big cycling Never-Never Land, where recession is something that simply doesn't happen here. We are just too cool, too hip. Oh yes - and we were voted the happiest place to live in some silly poll last year. Well, guys, take a look around you and

please take off those rose-tinted blinkers. There are many more shops with "To Let" signs on them than there were a year ago and people are not spending as much. Of course, you will always find some joker in the North Laine who will tell you there is no recession in Brighton and that the Utopian dream lives on. The reality, however, is somewhat different - and is generally recognised by all those not on drugs or medication of some kind. We are in a mess and, while we have been one of the last to suffer, it is now happening and we need to recognise the fact. We need city leaders who can get to grips with where we actually are and not continually pat ourselves on the back every time the sun comes out and we have a good day. Of course, we have good days at the weekend when the sun is out. Because of the close proximity to London, that is always going to happen. Do we really believe that if Brighton was not blessed with the location and transport links that we have, the day-trippers would flock here as they do? Let's get real and recognise these are dire times. We need to encourage shoppers and longer stay tourists to visit. We need those people mid-week, when our shops and hotels are half full. We need them in the winter,

No back-slapping: we need day-trippers all year round. Photograph: Andrew Hasson (www.andrewhasson.com) Inset: ‘Crap Towns Returns’ book cover.

when the day-trippers do not come. We need to encourage every single person that we possibly can to bring their trade to our city and stop resting on our laurels. We need to stop talking nonsense about everyone getting on their bikes and leading healthier lives. Cycling is a fine-weather pastime and not something the majority of us are ever going to do on a cold, wet day in January. No matter how many cycle lanes the council creates, we are constantly told they didn't cost us anything - as the money came from a mystical place called Brussels.

Wake up, dear councillors, and get with the real programme please. Before it is too late. What we need is some strong leadership and, unfortunately, I see precious little of that in any of the parties. If we could only take the politics out of local governance and attract some better quality candidates to stand as independent councillors. Oh well! Dream on! Do you agree with Mike Holland? Let us know your thoughts. Email: views@ brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk. Twitter: @BrightonIndy

Albion makes a change in childhood obesity Susanna Reid EVIDENCE showing a reduction in childhood obesity rates is being linked to an increase in initiatives to tackle the problem as schools break up for the summer. The current school year has seen Albion in the Community (AITC) help deliver programmes in 20 schools across the city to encourage children to be more physically active and adopt healthier lifestyles. "Make a Change", the largest of these initiatives, has worked with nearly 2,000 primary and junior pupils in 15 schools. The six-week programmes see AITC staff and American Express-trained volunteers deliver physical activity and healthy-eating sessions with groups of up to 30 children at time. Schools involved have seen a 70% increase in the amount of fruit and vegetables eaten by those children taking part. Meanwhile, the most recent figures available from the National Child Weight Measurement programme show the proportion of Year 6 children in Brighton and Hove who are categorised as obese is nearly 4% less than the national average of 19.2%. The figures also show a slight decrease over the last five years in the proportion of obese 10and 11-year-olds in Brighton and Hove. AITC is the award-winning charitable arm of Brighton & Hove Albion. Its childhood obesity and physical activity programmes are funded and supported by: The Football League Trust;

Gully, Brighton and Hove Albion’s mascot, joined in some of the sessions

Brighton and Hove City Council; Brighton and Hove Food Partnership; Infinity Foods; American Express; and Radius Healthcare. Stuart Christie, head of AITC Health, said: “The key to the success of these programmes is not only working with the children, but also engaging the parents and the teachers so that behaviour and habits learned during our sessions can be maintained outside of school and in the home. “We have a real focus on working in schools

in areas of high health inequalities and we will continue to do that with next year’s programme.” David Brindley, Physical Activity Lead, Brighton and Hove City Council Public Health, said: “We are in a better position than England as a whole and these programmes are definitely making a difference. “However, childhood obesity is still a major problem in Brighton and Hove. The key is to tackle it at an early age and teach children and

their families about the benefits of healthy eating and how they can do it simply on a low budget.” Volunteers from American Express were joined by Gully as they took part in one of the last "Make a Change" sessions of the year at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Hollingdean. Game on! Dr Lucas v Dr Sen Jean Calder ONE HUNDRED years ago, 50,000 women campaigning for the right to vote staged the Great Suffrage Pilgrimage, marching from gathering points all over Britain to a rally in Hyde Park. On Sunday morning, campaigners set out from Brighton Pier, planning to recreate the week-long historic event. The walk was organised by activists Lucy Holmes and Maire McQueeney - and was launched by two seasoned campaigners for women’s rights: Labour Baroness Joyce Gould and Caroline Lucas. Also present, was Purna Sen, the woman who - newly-selected as Labour prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Pavilion - hopes to unseat , Brighton’s first Green (and only female) MP. Neither of the city’s two male MPs were present. Nor were the Labour parliamentary candidates recently chosen to oppose them. The speeches were uplifting. Women and men of all ages carried banners and

sang suffrage anthems. And even the less fit among us managed to walk to Preston Park. It was an inspirational event. I found it sad, however to be marching alongside Caroline Lucas and Purna Sen, certain in the knowledge that at least one of these two impressive women will not be an MP after the 2015 general election. Women MPs are still a small minority of our parliamentarians and few make it onto party front benches. Women MPs of independent spirit with an explicit commitment to women’s rights are especially rare. This is one of many reasons why Caroline Lucas has been such a breath of fresh air in Westminster and has won so many “newcomer” awards. The two women have much in common. They are of similar age, intellectually able and both hold doctorates. Articulate and passionate, they have a track record of campaigning for human rights and against discrimination and violence against women. Both have impeccable progressive credentials and are likely to appeal to the urban intelligentsia that now dominates Brighton Pavilion. The trouble is, it looks to an outsider as if Dr Sen was selected primarily to challenge Dr Lucas - and this raises difficult questions. In common with others, I do wonder why Labour in Brighton is quite so committed to beating a strong highly-successful woman

Purna Sen: Labour members in Brighton Pavilion celebrate with their new parliamentary candidate

MP - who is after all both a feminist and a socialist, and is likely to vote with Labour most of the time. I’ve never had the opportunity to ask Dr Lucas why, years ago, she chose not to join the Labour Party - or whether she thinks she could ever have progressed or worked effectively within it. I think, however, that Labour members could usefully ask themselves the same questions. I fear the uncomfortable truth is that as a strong, independent and able

woman - and a feminist socialist to boot - she would probably never have been selected as a Labour candidate. I’m told things have improved since the bad old days of “Blair’s babes”, when Alastair Campbell ruled the roost and Labour’s women were mocked and sidelined - and rarely promoted. But still I wonder. Was Purna Sen selected because she is selfevidently a supremely good candidate. Or because she was considered well-placed to win a catfight with Caroline Lucas? She says she wants to stand nowhere else but in her home constituency. Party organizers, however, know that highlyqualified women candidates are notoriously hesitant to promote themselves. Given the desperate need for good women MPs and her outstanding track record, Purna Sen could have been encouraged into a safe Labour seat. The shameful fact is that she wasn’t.

Perfect setting: 20 bo Laura Lockington BOOKS set where you live are a joy to read. Spotting the familiar location, knowing that you’ve eaten fish and chips there, had a cup of tea here, bought a newspaper in that particular shop, all add to the charm. There’s an awful lot of crime books set in our city – I wonder why? I ask purely tongue in cheek of course. The master of that genre has to be Peter James, who is meticulous in his geographical details. This list is personal. So it’s not in any way definitive - and if I’ve left some favourites out, do let me know. Quite a few of the authors mentioned here also live in Brighton. So it really is a question of “write about what you know”. Bethan Roberts’s book My Policeman is set in the 1950s and was last year’s City Reads choice. It conjures up a wonderfully atmospheric Brighton long gone – and most of it good riddance to, I say. The illegal activities of underground gay clubs are a thing of the past and that decade must have been terrible if you were, as they used to say in those dark days, “that way inclined”.

Jane Austen mentions Brighton a lot in her books, but my money’s on the ultimate Regency Queen – Georgette Heyer. She lived for a short period in Adelaide Crescent in Hove and she really did refer to her publishers in the damningly snobbish phrase –“the inkies”. Bet they loved that. Will Self was a Brighton boy at some time in his chequered life and the horribly-fascinating Fat Controller in his book could be conjured up only in this seaside city of ours – a city that has a reputation for all things wicked. The wickedness, of course, can also be found in Keith Waterhouse and Patrick Hamilton, whose work is enjoying a well-deserved resurgence of interest. A special mention for the “low-level menace” mistress, Julia Crouch, whose book Cuckoo kept me up all night, compulsively turning the pages on this addictive thriller. Based in Brighton herself, the author is getting known as “Creepy Crouch”. But the queen of Brighton writers simply has to be Julie Burchill. Love her or loathe her (and she does love being loathed), her admiration and passion for our city is there for all to read in the naughty but nice Sugar Rush (remember location-spotting when it was on TV?) and her many newspaper columns. All the books have a special charm for Brightonians, if only to say when reading from a page – “that’s my city, that is”. Happy reading!

1 My Idea of Fun, by Will Self A lonely young boy growing up in Brighton has no idea that Mr Broadhurst (the Fat Controller) will have such a violent hold over his life. At times surreal, and at all times compulsive reading. Brighton is portrayed, warts and all.

4 Brighton Rock, by Graham Greene The classic Brighton book. Films and the book have made this a perennial favourite of all Brightonians. The seedy and criminal side of the city of the 1950s is brilliantly conveyed, as is the sociopath and would be gangster, Pinkie. He’s probably haunting the pier.

2 Starlings, by Erinna Mettler Every chapter of this book deals with another inhabitant of Brighton and how their lives collide in ways unknown to themselves. Like the starlings that flock to the pier, they become a flock of birds interacting with one another.

5 Cuckoo, by Julia Crouch Rose seems to have it all. The kids, the husband, the beautiful home, But then Polly, her best friend, comes to stay. A dark, deeply-unsettling read. By the master of low-level menace.

3 My Policeman, by Bethan Roberts A wonderful study of Brighton in the 1950s - and the love triangle that a policeman, an infant teacher and the head of Brighton Art Museum find themselves in. How attitudes have changed. But the city remains the same.

6 One Moment, One Morning, by Sarah Rayner A book of loss, secrets and lies. It also celebrates the friendships of women and their loyalty to one another. Every description of Brighton rings as loud and clear as a bell. Although the book is about loss, it is ultimately joyful.

7 Regency Buck, by Georgette Heyer A really gorgeous romp of a book, set in Regency London and Brighton, about a cat-andmouse game between two orphans and their guardian, the dandy, Fifth Earl of Worth, who is also a friend of the notorious and fashionable Regent. Full of Brighton Regency descriptions, characters and fashion. 8 Dead Man’s Time, by Peter James The knocker boys may be gone in Brighton, but their wicked legacy lingers on in the pages of this plot-driven detective novel. The rich houses of Brighton to the seamier side of the city are all here. 9 Sugar Rush, by Julie Burchill When teenage Kim has to swop her posh private school for a comprehensive in Brighton, help is at hand from wild Maria. Has she fallen in love with her best friend? More than a teenage crush

book – this became the book for all teenage girls, gay or not. 10 Breakfast in Brighton, by Nigel Richardson Inspired by Brighton as a state of mind as much as a place, Nigel Richardson returns after a gap of 20 years to capture its spirit. The narrative is woven from strands of memoir, travelogue, reportage, and fiction, and touches on actors and fantasists, drunkards, writers, chancers, and the maniacs that inhabit the twittens and streets. 11 Palace Pier, by Keith Waterhouse Chris Duffy was once a reasonably-successful writer – but due to excessive procrastination, heavy drinking and the perils of running a brica-brac stall, it seems to have gone very wrong indeed. A very funny book by the man who famously said: “Brighton is a town that always

Meet Serena who is being groomed by MI5. The secret mission is codenamed Sweet Tooth. She falls in love with the fiction of Thomas Haley, and then the man where he works in Sussex University. The first rule of Sweet Tooth? Trust no one. But can she? 20 The Snowman, by Raymond Briggs A small boy’s magical tale of friendship with a snowman. He is taken flying over the snowy landscape of Brighton by the snowman, with glorious pictures of famous Brighton landmarks such as Brighton Pavilion and Palmeira Square. Prepare to swoon.

Cityclean peace deal costs “hundreds of thousands”

Quiz show: Jason Kitcat (right) answers questions posed by Greg Hadfield, editorial director of Brighton & Hove Independent

Frank le Duc THE COST of settling the dispute with striking staff at Cityclean is likely to be hundreds of thousands of pounds, according to council leader Jason Kitcat. It had been estimated that meeting the full demands of the GMB, which represents refuse workers and street-cleaners at Cityclean’s Hollingdean depot, would have cost £24 million. Councillor Kitcat said: “That was the cost

of a ‘no detriment’ solution, in line with some of the public discourse. But that’s nowhere near the cost. We’re talking about hundreds of thousands. “It’s not completed yet. The consultation with staff will carry on until August 5. There are still more conversations to be had. The unions will have until the end of August to respond. “We won’t actually put in place the final agreement until October 1. So there’s a lot more work to be done.”

When the consultation period started, Cityclean crews walked out on an unofficial strike. A five-day formal strike followed. This week the GMB said members had agreed to revised proposals, which also meant changes to working patterns. Councillor Kitcat, the Green leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, spoke about the dispute during a webcast interview with Greg Hadfield, editorial director of Brighton & Hove Independent. The webcast focused on the council’s £750 million budget. Councillor Kitcat said: “We need to reduce our spending by £23.6 million for the next financial year.” He said that the council had to find savings of £20 million to £25 million a year until 2019, by which time its central government funding would have been reduced by about 60 per cent. He said: “We are one of the worst-cut authorities in the country and definitely the worst-cut in our region. “It’s not just about the government’s cuts to our funding. It’s also about growing demand. It’s a kind of two-pronged pressure. “We’ve got less money coming in but also greater demand. People are living longer. We also have a baby boom going on, so greater demand for school places. “We have 800 services we provide and we are committed in this year to looking at all those services to say: ‘What’s the best way that we can provide them? And do those

services need to continue as council services? Can we find other ways of doing them?’ “Some of them may change. Some of them we’ll do the same as before but more efficiently. “An example is putting children into care. If it’s done through an external agency, the costs can be more than double than if we did it through in-house foster carers.” He called for greater freedom for councils, saying: “The fact that England is the last part of the United Kingdom to have any genuine meaningful devolution is a matter of considerable concern.” He ruled out a referendum on the level of council tax, saying that it was costly and unworkable. Instead, he urged the public to get involved in the council’s budget-setting process before the final decisions were made next February.

Open day that’s as pretty as a peach Each Peach childcare invite you to their open day on 27th July; why not come along and see if it’s the place for your child!

WE ARE very excited to announce the date for our summer open day! It can be hard to keep your little ones entertained so on Saturday 27th July, at the start of the summer holidays we thought what better way to bring everyone together for a fun (and cost effective) day out. We have face painting, book stalls, sessions from ‘tatty bumpkins’ and ‘diddi dance’, sing and sign, Socatots and a variety of other activity ideas with recipe suggestions and lots, lots more! We would also love to show off our beautiful setting and we encourage you to look round everywhere whilst joining in with the entertainment we have set up all around the building and tasting samples of food from our award winning menus! Join in our ‘spot the peach’ competition with a chance to win some free childcare sessions. For more ideas on summer holiday activities and entertainment look out for the exciting variety of free magazines you can pick up that highlight what is available to do in your local areas, these usually also advertise

special events and fun days. Plus take a look at the fantastic selection of local websites set up by parents with great information for parents. We recently became accredited by Kallikids who have a great website for trusted and approved family activity providers and services. At our open day take away a Kallikids bag with a chance to win the Kallikids Bear. We are very lucky with the choices we have near to us including the beach, an abundance of parks as well as nearby woods, farms or zoos just a car, bus or train journey away. I don’t think that we make the most of our gardens and outside spaces, they sort of get forgotten in our busy life styles, rushing around and heading out to all of our local

attractions! Whatever the weather there are lots of activities we can do outside and it doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is. Even if you don’t have a garden at all there is nothing more fun than creating one in a tray or old washing up bowl! I remember making one for a school competition and loving designing it, choosing where I was putting the path of mini stones or the tiny pond made out of tin foil! My mum took me to the local park where I collected moss, twigs and pebbles a bit of soil and then the fun began! I have created ‘dino worlds’ with my young children including an erupting volcano, Paper Mache around a plastic cup fill it with yellow and red powder paint, bicarbonate of soda and

then add vinegar the eruption is great fun. We grow cress for the grass and a longer term project, lettuce for the ferns! These were easily adapted when my daughter wanted a ‘fairy world’ and even created a lovely peppa pig scene! Building camps or dens outside (or in) can be achieved in all sorts of ways and give hours of endless fun especially if you as parents/ aunts/uncles/grandparents/friends join in. We all know that it is often the box that will capture the children’s imagination more than the products in them. Have a look at our web site www. eachpeachchildcare.co.uk for more fun ideas. We have recently been shortlisted in the ‘Nursery World Awards’ for the web site of the year (2013) and will keep you updated with more information on this and our open day on here. There is a ‘tips and news’ section that has different ideas and advise, even if your children are over 5 we have designed it to support parents, carers and nursery staff alike. You can also ‘like’ our face book page or follow us on twitter where you can keep up to date with information and will see different activities you can do with your children at home! In the mean time have fun and we look forward to seeing you at our summer open day 11am-4pm on Saturday 27th July!

Can Hollingbury be Hollywood? Richard Morris AMBITIOUS plans to establish Brighton as an emerging centre of television production could create up to 1,000 new jobs over the next 10 years. The team behind Latest Magazine (www. thelatest.co.uk) has secured the franchise to broadcast programmes on Freeview Channel 8 and the project is expected to go live in early 2014, to an initial reach of 150,000 homes - with a potential for many more soon after. A host of shows are already being produced, including: a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a professional footballer, in tandem with a Brighton and Hove Albion star; a crime series spearheaded by Peter James, the best-selling author; and a half-hour news slot focusing on Brighton. There will also be shows discussing local politics, lengthy sports coverage, and unrivalled entertainment news. In fact, Bill Smith, one of the people driving the plans, believes the sky is the limit. Speaking exclusively to Brighton & Hove Independent, Mr Smith said: “Brighton is an amazing city. But, at the moment, it does not have any television studios or television job opportunities. “Basically, if you want to work in television and come from Brighton, you either have to move or commute. We don’t want Brighton to be somewhere that supplies talent to a rich place

up the road; we want to create an environment where local talent can flourish.” But is it an achievable dream? Mr Smith certainly thinks so. “We want everyone to embrace this and get involved. There will be a real chance for people to get their ideas on the television. You might have to wait six months for a meeting with the BBC. With us, you could be making your first show within a week. If you have an idea you think could work, just get in touch. “We want to make Bevendean the new Beverley Hills - and Hollingbury the new Hollywood. There is no reason why we can’t succeed. Brighton is one of the best cities in Europe, but has no accessible television facilities. That can change and the city can become one of the leading centres for digital television. “If that happens, it will obviously create jobs. If you work on the basis that a television show creates 10 jobs - and we already have two in production doing just that - hoping for 1,000 jobs over the next 10 years is not overlyambitious. We just need another 98 shows.” The channel will also show national content provided by sister local programmers across the country. The flip side of that is that shows shot here in Brighton could be afforded a national, prime-time slot on the air – something Mr Smith points out would be next-to-impossible at channels like the BBC. He and his team have promised to support people with good programme ideas, regardless

The Vega Building: a modern landmark Brighton-based branding experts Yelo Wolf were given the task of capturing the original appearance and feel of the old building. The final result - providing 40 apartments for rent by Southern Housing Group - has been recognised as a remarkable accomplishment. Richard Wolfströme, for The Vega Building is on the site of a 1930s garage. Pictures: Jim Stephenson the partnership, Photography (www.clickclickjim.com) explained the process. He said: “It was given Richard Morris the name The Vega Building to fit with the Art Deco styling of the proposal. researched the lettering style from the period and developed the design strategy. “Building on the narrative, we developed a system that utilised the elegant form of the plane and chose a font that is modern, legible and contemporary - and which complemented the building and the developing story. “We wanted a ‘light touch’ to the design, avoiding ‘blocky’ signage panels, proposing a sensitive approach that used an accent colour for each floor and signage lettering that was mounted directly to building surfaces, respecting the architectural lines.” Silhouettes of the plane have been used throughout the building on signs pointing visitors round the site and information points. But even the lettering was given an extra level of attention. The secret, it seems, is in the detail. As Mr Wolfströme revealed: “The lettering is laser-cut from stainless steel and installed as individual letters raised from the wall surfaces - giving a modern take on the industrial clean nature of the style and time.” The main Vega sign lightbox letters are 480mm high, each fabricated from white perspex and mounted within a stainless steel casing that wraps around the front forming an elegant border. This, the staff at Yelo Wolf

hope, creates a strong identity both in the day and at night when the building is lit up. The car park continues the theme , with dotted lines indicate parking spaces complete with the Vega plane motif labelling the space numbering system. Planes on the floor surface also direct users to bay areas and four disabled bay areas are clearly marked in blue. Secondary signage throughout the building is signed using a matt black vinyl and statutory signage silk-screened onto stainless steel panels to maintain the aesthetic. The Vega Building, which opened earlier this year, was the first project taken on by Yelo Wolf since it emerged as a professional partnership between Yelo Architects and Wolfstrome. Purpose-built Dean Wood opens its doors Susanna Reid

A NEW purpose-built care home has been opened formally by Councillor Denise Cobb, the Mayor of Brighton and Hove. Dean Wood Nursing and Residential Home in Woodingdean is part of a former woodland site, with outstanding views to the sea from its elevated position. It is designed to provide nursing and dementia care facilities. Features include memory triggers such as eye-catching pictures; there are also reminiscence activity areas, sensory gardens, and memory boxes for residents' photographs and personal items. Much emphasis is on meal times, with a team of professional chefs serving up a wide choice of tasty and nutritious freshlyprepared meals. Residents can enjoy their meals in the communal dining rooms. But there is also a private dining room - which is particularly handy when friends and family are visiting for special occasions. On warmer days, the secure landscaped gardens, private roof terrace and patio areas offer a place to relax and spend time with family and friends. There's also a children’s play area and covered BBQ area. Dean Wood - run by Bupa Care Homes has its own cinema and audio-visual suite,

with large-screen viewing, comfortable seating and refreshment area. The cost depends on the type of room and the level of care. The lowest-cost room with the lowest level of care costs £900 a week; for high-level care in a room with a sea view, the cost is £1,088 a week. Gill Rankin, the home manager, graduated from Manchester Royal

Infirmary Hospital in 1989. She has worked in NHS and Nuffield hospitals, as well as for a former Bupa hospital. In addition, Gill spent eight years with the British Army, nursing in military hospitals and medical centres and caring for troops in combat. She said: “A purpose-built care home will provide me and my team with a firstclass environment and first-class facilities

in which to deliver expert care. “It’s important that residents continue to feel part of the community. We’ve already met with the children and staff at Downs View School, which is next door to the site of the care home. Pupils recently planted a time-capsule under the foundations of the home before building began.”

throughout, ensuring that you’re never more than a few seconds away from a witty line or an inspired visual gag. In particular, the (notably weaponless) ‘Pub Fu’ fight sequences are thrillingly directed, often unfolding in a single take with no cuts (look out for a superb sequence where Gary tries to fight without spilling his pint).

Sharply directed and superbly acted, this is a hugely entertaining and frequently hilarious sci-fi comedy that stands as a worthy addition to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz in the so-called Cornetto Trilogy. After reuniting his four friends (all of whom, unlike Gary, have grown up and now have families and responsible jobs), Gary persuades them all to join him in recreating their epic 12 pubs, 12 pints pub crawl in Newton Haven. However, after a few pints, they discover that the townspeople are all behaving rather strangely and soon their evening takes a decidedly bizarre turn and the five friends end up fighting for their lives.

What’s it all about? Co-written and directed by Edgar Wright and starring co-writer Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, The World’s End is the third entry in the trio’s so-called Cornetto Trilogy after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Pegg stars as never-grownup manchild Gary King, who’s become obsessed with an epic pub crawl he failed to complete with his best friends Andy, Ollie, Pete and Steve (Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan and Paddy Considine) in their hometown of Newton Haven, twenty years ago. Worth seeing? The World’s End is a hugely entertaining Sci-Fi comedy with a laugh-out-loud funny script and terrific comic performances from a superb cast. Highly recommended.

Gary as a significantly more obnoxious character than we’re used to seeing from him. Frost is equally good as Andy (his sparky chemistry with Pegg is a given) and there’s terrific support from Marsan (inspired), Freeman and Considine, while Rosamund Pike more than holds her own as Ollie’s sister Sam, who awakens powerful, long-thought-dormant crushes in both Gary and Steve. The lengthy set-up (including a flashback to the men as teenagers) means that the film takes a while to get going, but once the pub crawl begins, Wright keeps things moving at an exciting pace

The Great Wright and Pegg’s witty script is packed with quotable lines and is frequently laugh-out-loud funny, but it’s also spot-on and surprisingly moving in its depiction of male friendships and manages to say some interesting things about both the gradual homogenisation of British society (there’s a great gag involving chain pubs) as well as commenting on both the appeal and the inherent dangers of nostalgia. That said, there’s also a fantastic, nostalgia-heavy soundtrack comprised (mostly) of songs released between 1988 and 1991.

Thirsty Work - plumbers are the biggest tea drinkers

PLUMBERS drink more tea than any other profession, a study has revealed – researchers found plumbers drink an average of almost 18 cups of tea while on the job each week – around 3-4 each day. One in two plumbers even said they think they concentrate and work better if they have a cup of tea while working, while half struggle to get going on a job until they have had a sip of the hot drink. Fellow self-employed workers and small business like builders, electricians and beauticians are also among the biggest tea fans. But shop assistants struggle to get to the same level of tea drinking while at work –

sipping just eight a week or just over one a day. Sanjay Lobo, VP Marketing at business card specialist Vistaprint said: “For many workers and those who run a small business, drinking several cups of tea goes a long way to getting them through their working day – and it seems plumbers enjoy it more than most. “The research shows small businesses thrive on cups of tea more than professions like shop assistants who have less flexibility to fit in a cuppa when they choose. “If tea fuels small business and small business makes up £3,100 billion of the economy , I’d say that’s an impressive return for the humble brew. “Perhaps we’ll all think twice next time we ask our plumbers if they want a cuppa!” The study, of 2,000 workers found that factory workers are second in the league of tea drinkers, sipping just over 17 a week or more than three a day. Builders also drink around 17 cups while working each week, with almost 58% saying a cuppa actually helps them to concentrate better on the job in hand. And more than three quarters even said making a cup of tea is one of the first things they do each morning. Sales reps came fourth with a daily total of

When you can't stand the heat... get into the freezer aisle WE'VE waited all year for the British summer time - but for some it's already become 'too darn hot'. Now Brits are seeking the 'big chill' as the country basks in potentially the hottest July since 2006. Waitrose has noticed that shoppers are beating a retreat from the scorching temperatures outside by taking refuge in its frozen aisles. Customers' desire to keep ice cool has helped explain the supermarket's highest frozen food sales on record in a normal trading week*, with total frozen food sales up 34%. Waitrose Frozen Food Buying Manager, Michael Simpson-Jones said: "The frozen aisle has suddenly become one of the most popular places to chill out as shoppers try and cool down in the face of scorching temperatures outside. "Some of the appeal is clearly down to the colossal demands for ice creams and lollies. But with average temperatures this week nearing 30 degrees, our freezer aisles have

also become a popular place for shoppers to keep their cool." Some of the most popular items include, frozen burgers, up 70 per cent and frozen fruit, which is up by a whopping 50%. Frozen ice lollies are up by 310% and ice creams are soaring by an ice cool 123%, while frozen torte sales have risen by 125%. Children are keeping their cool in the heat with kids lollies up 310% and it seems shoppers are seeking the dolce vita as Italian style ice creams have scooted up by 200%; *(Outside Christmas and Easter)

16 cups of tea, while recruitment consultants completed the top five with an average of 15 cups of tea each week. Other trades and professions to feature in the list include electricians, painters or decorators and beauticians. 61% of tea-loving beauticians even said regular cups of tea help them to get through their day, while 90% of painters and decorators said the same. Nurses and doctors are also in the top ten. At the other end of the scale, those in retail drink just eight cups of tea a day, while secretaries and PA’s surprisingly drink just nine cups – despite working at a desk most of the day. Drivers, teachers and solicitors are also among the professions who struggle to drink tea during their working day. Researchers also found that the average worker will drink an average of two cups of tea every day, with more than three quarters admitting the hot drink helps them get through their day. Almost six in ten even said they struggle to focus on the working day ahead of them if they haven’t yet had a cup of tea, while around two thirds think it actually helps them to work better. Four in ten even claimed they can’t do their job properly, or as well, without their

first cup of tea. But one in five say the tea round responsibilities cause rows in their workplace with arguments about who’s turn it is to make the next one – with a quarter saying they have at least one tea-related disagreement a week. How to enjoy a fruity summer

PEACHES and nectarines, plums, apricots and plenty more: summer offers us a huge range of fruity ways to quench our thirst, protect us from excessive exposure to sunlight and replenish the substances lost during open air activities and sport. And plenty of advice is at hand to help us make the most of summer fruit, in the shape of Mr. and Miss Fruitness, the two superheroes created as part of the “Fruitness, enjoy it!” project, aimed at young people in Germany, the UK, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. In recent years, Northern European nations have shown a trend towards reduced fruit and vegetable consumption, with very few countries achieving the recommended average daily dose of 400 grams per person. During the summer, the positive effects of fruit are even more

important, given the anti-oxidant action of vitamins C and A - which protect body tissue from aging and from too much sun - as well as abundant liquids and the presence of mineral salts able to replenish substances lost through perspiration. Apricots, for example, are an excellent source of beta-carotene (a precursor of vitamin A) and are also rich in potassium and magnesium. Peaches and nectarines are rich in fibre, and are also great for healthy thirst-quenching, given their high water content. The slightly more bitter taste of plums brings with it a concentration of antioxidants and mineral salts. All these summer fruits can be easily carried anywhere and eaten just as they are, or else can be used to make deliciously refreshing fruit drinks, milk shakes or fruit salads. The “Fruitness, enjoy it!” campaign is carrying out a wealth of initiatives this summer, all aimed at making European consumers more aware of the benefits of fruit consumption and a healthy and active lifestyle. All kinds of advice and numerous recipes are available on the multilingual website fruitness.eu

Fashion & Lifestyle Single syndrome: Clooney isn't alone only 12% of bachelors want to commit HOLLYWOOD heartthrob and confirmed bachelor George Clooney recently ended another relationship based on his supposed ‘commitment issues. Today’s survey of bachelors in the UK, conducted by 1926, revealed that Clooney is not alone in his unwillingness to settle down; only 8% of respondents were interested in getting married and only 4% in starting a family. The majority of bachelors specified that their top three most important priorities were their careers, travelling and buying a property. They displayed a surprising amount of consideration when it came to selecting their ideal domestic surroundings. It was clear that many hankered after the ultimate bachelor pad, proving that men are happier when they can enjoy the sanctity of their own space, away from the chaos of their daily lives. Despite the increasing range of digital gadgets, nearly 40% of bachelors listed a

flat screen TV as the most essential item for their dream flat. Respondents also displayed a keen interest in aesthetics; they felt that fine art would have the biggest impact on the style of their 21st century man cave, followed closely by luxury wooden flooring and marble kitchen worktops. One in four bachelors reinforced gender stereotypes by selecting blue as their preferred interior colour, with beige and black also proving popular. Bachelors who were under 25 years old preferred to consult their mothers when choosing how and what to furnish their place with. Overall, however, friends were the first point of call for unattached single men looking for advice on interior design and decoration. As well as Clooney, Prince Harry also ranked as a hugely admired bachelor, showing that a hedonistic and lavish lifestyle is appealing to the modern man, as well as an opulent place to call their home. It seems that today’s bachelor has liberated himself from the need for a housewife and carved out a new identity as an independent playboy who is proud to say “I don’t”.

Horoscopes Aries News of a wedding or birth will soon bring joy to friends and relatives and will make you reflective. Things appear to be on the move on the domestic front but not quickly enough for your liking. Pushing too hard and too quickly will make others prickly. A gentle, discreet and, dare I say, surreptitious nudge on the other hand!!

26th July - 1st August

Taurus Well about time too I hear you say. This is a good week for personal connections. Too often in the past you have been misunderstood, at long last someone gets it and without you having to explain! You are beginning to build a real understanding with those most important. With this support it is a great time for planning changes.

Cancer A good time to splash the cash. The feeling of well being and admiration this engenders will more than compensate for the loss in your coffers. Just make sure you do your homework before you make the big purchase and all will be well. A great week for travel too so that big purchase could be a car or holiday!

Gemini Still on a roll this week, particularly on the relationship front. But you need to given your significant other time to work things out for themselves. It’s for the best. Money is looking good too, sorry not copious amounts but you are feeling more confident about the financial situation. And guess what, it’s all down to your own efforts!

Leo Education is on the agenda this week and not necessarily of the formal kind. You will be learning lessons perhaps the hard way, perhaps not. One thing is for sure the events of this week will give you pause for thought and reshape your resolve and character. So even if the experiences are a little negative take heart.

Got any fashion tips? @BrightonIndy

The thighs the limit - Men's shorts get shorter as temperatures soar MEN ARE putting their best foot forward and showing more leg than ever before as temperatures across the UK continue to soar. Sales data released by retailer Debenhams shows that demand for men’s shorts that sit at the top of thighs, rather than knees has shot up by an amazing 156% in the last week. The trend it seems is spurred on by celebrities as well as the temperature with well-known faces such as TOWIE’s Joey Essex and Mark Wright, Cristiano Ronaldo, Danny Dyer, Olly Murs and One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson preferring the thigh-skimming option. Spotted on the recent SS14 catwalks of Versace, Emporio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Gieves & Hawkes, this is one trend that has definitely made the leap to the great British high street, and

Virgo The past has a way of catching up with us but this is sometimes no bad thing. Perhaps you are harbouring a grudge from long ago or even an unrequited passion. Whatever it is, give it an airing and then you can see it for what it is a learning curve! Do this and the future looks good. Libra You may be called upon to babysit or take an active part in some national youth project, whichever it is, you need to embrace your role and be open-minded as well as open hearted. Not only will this aid that spiritual well being we talked of before, on a more earthly plane it could bring about great future connections. Scorpio That horrid paperwork stuff you have been putting off dealing with, get it sorted. You need to clear the decks and make ready for the long awaited change that is headed your way. That change by the way is centered on communication of all types. This will only happen though if you’re prepared. So get filing and await new adventures. Sagittarius Well you know you have been in two minds about something, that is ok but the secret is not to let it be known. Others may

looks set to continue. Men’s chino shorts from Debenhams’ Red Herring range were first launched in March and measure 52cm from waist to hem, whilst the majority of other styles come in at 70cms. Said Debenhams spokesperson Ed Watson: “We have all heard about the emergence of ‘mankles’ – male ankles peeking out from rolled up trousers. Well, this takes it to the next level.” “All over the world, British men are renowned for exposing their white knobbly knees during the summer holidays.” Watson continues: “For the daring few, wearing short shorts can be a liberating experience, particularly when faced with the recent tropic temperatures.” “We haven’t seen a demand for short shorts as high as this since Wham sparked the trend in the 1980s – we are currently considering whether or not to go even shorter for next summer!” The retailer has seen a particularly high demand for short shorts in Newcastle, Glasgow and Cardiff.

write you off as indecisive whereas we know that you are making some major decisions right now which could impact on others. So keep your reflections to yourself until you have one mind. Capricorn Things should continue along an even path on the domestic front just so long as you don’t push it! Property matters are on your mind this week, buying, selling, renting or simply renovating you may get some help from an unlikely quarter. Say thank you and listen intently. This should enable you to look beyond the obvious to the possible. Aquarius Well you are certainly feeling a lot better this week. You feel confident and in control. You need to build on this success and start putting other areas of your life in order. This would be a good time for tackling health and wealth issues for instance. Nothing grand, just the gym and check your balance now and then! Pisces Partnership issues need to be addressed this week. It could be your partner in love or your partner in business but in either relationship there is the possibility of miscommunication and mistrust. So set up the meeting, the agenda and communicate. Even personal relationships require a mental agenda. The more you talk the more the possibility for understanding and resolution.

It’s ‘drivetime’ again for ex-Chris Evans Mini

Chris Froome presented with unique Jaguar F-TYPE

A MINI once owned by radio DJ and TV presenter Chris Evans is aiming to raise pots of money for BBC Children in Need when it is auctioned at CarFest by Silverstone Auctions. As well as having a celebrity ex-owner, this 1964 Austin Mini Mk I has been built to Cooper specification and is estimated at just £6,000 to £8,000. It will go under the hammer at CarFest North on Sunday 4th August at Oulton Park, Cheshire. Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “It’s a lovely little car in its own right, but this 1964 Austin Mini has the added attraction of once being the pride and joy of household name Chris Evans. “I’m sure that this celebrity status will add to its appeal, although the lucky new owner will struggle to listen to Chris on his popular breakfast radio show on their way to work as it doesn’t have a radio!” In 2003, the car was professionally restored by an employee at a leading classic car restoration specialist in Kent. He bored out the engine from 850cc to 998cc and made

TO celebrate an outstanding second victory in the Tour de France for Team Sky, Jaguar rewarded race winner Chris Froome with a very special Jaguar F-TYPE sports car. Jaguar has contributed to the success of Froome and Team Sky in 2013 through provision of the Jaguar XF Sportbrake as the team’s official support vehicle. As part of the #GetBehindTeamSky social media campaign created by Jaguar, fans were asked to tweet their own images of support. An overwhelming response followed, with selected photographs forming the famous ‘Team Sky’ line running down the centre of the car. In this case, the livery is yellow rather than blue, in recognition of Team Sky’s achievement. The design mimics the livery of the Team Sky Jaguar XF Sportbrake, which featured the images submitted by supporters during the final stage of the Tour in Paris on Sunday. The victory marks back-to-back successes in the Tour for Team Sky, with Chris Froome becoming the second British rider to win the Yellow Jersey after Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2012. Chris Froome commented: “Every

a number of significant upgrades. These included a new exhaust system, disc brakes, dry suspension and an original British Leyland straight cut gearbox to name but a few. If that wasn’t enough then there’s also a large number of bills and receipts in the history file. Meanwhile, Chris Evans himself has spoken very highly of the way it drives and how much fun he had behind the wheel. More recently it has been stored in a temperature controlled garage by the current vendor. For more information about any of the lots being offered by Silverstone Auctions at both CarFest weekends, which also includes CarFest South on 25th August at Laverstoke Park Farm, then visit silverstoneauctions.com.

young cyclist dreams of one day riding in the Tour de France, let alone winning it. I haven’t done it alone though. Team Sky has a great set of partners, and I’d like to thank Jaguar for their brilliant support over the past four years. They've invested a lot of time and ingenuity into designing the XF Sportbrake, which is the perfect race support car for us. It has been crucial to keeping the team on the road throughout the competition.” David Steele, Jaguar Global Brand Experience Director commented: “It is an absolute pleasure to once again celebrate a Tour de France victory with Team Sky. Being part of the story is a real privilege for everyone at Jaguar. We congratulate the Team and I am sure Chris Froome will enjoy celebrating with an invigorating drive in his new F-TYPE.”

Stay pumped up to avoid tyre failures

Don’t give cash for cars AA warns buyers

AS THE heatwave continues ahead of the great summer get-away, drivers are being reminded about the need to make sure their tyres are properly inflated, to avoid temperature induced tyre failures. When tyres are under-inflated, excessive heat builds up within the tyre and makes them much more susceptible to suffering from a rapid deflation. These dramatic events can make the car extremely difficult to control, especially as they occur most frequently after prolonged periods of high speed running on busy motorways or A-roads. Underlining the scale of the risk and dangers, figures from the RAC show that last year, its patrol crews attended more than 50,000 tyre related call-outs in July and August alone. Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe, said: “We all love the hot weather – apart from our tyres if they’re not properly looked after. With July and August normally being the hottest two months of the year, car tyres are placed under increased stress from the higher temperatures like we’re currently experiencing. It really is important that motorists check their pressures at least once a month all year round, but even more so at this time of the year.” Under-inflation, as well as being a huge safety issue from an increased risk of tyre failures and punctures, can also be financially costly because of a reduced tyre life and increased fuel consumption as the engine has to work harder to make the tyre turn.

TWENTY per cent of used car buyers would pay three quarters of the value of a car in cash to secure a potential dream purchase. What's more, 14% of those surveyed by the AA, said they would actually pay the total asking price in cash. The AA warns buyers never to pay for a vehicle using cash, even a portion of it, as this is a gift for fraudsters keen to 'disappear' after a dodgy deal. "Despite continued warnings to people about the potential consequences of paying in cash for vehicles, it's clear from our survey that consumers continue to place their trust in sellers. This is particularly true if it looks like they will get their ideal car for a bargain price, which is a time when they should be on their guard the most," explains Jeremy Tiffany of the AA. "Paying in cash to complete a deal is a risky decision to make and one that is not really necessary." The AA advises car buyers that they have a couple of payment options available to them today - banker's drafts are still generally accepted or, the most common method of transferring money in the modern age - simply transferring funds via online banking. Tiffany continues, "If you have cash burning a hole in your pocket there is the temptation to make an impulse purchase before you have had time to conduct the proper research. But bringing cash with you to collect a vehicle leaves you open

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “In 2012 RAC patrols attended 344,000 call-outs for tyre and wheel jobs, making it our second biggest breakdown with 15 percent of our 2.3 million breakdowns. We urge everyone taking to the roads this summer to make sure their tyres are in good condition otherwise they risk spending some unwanted time on the hardshoulder or in a lay-by instead of on the beach.” When checking their tyre pressures, drivers should ensure they are correctly inflated for the load being carried, such as additional passengers or holiday luggage. The correct settings can be found in the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook, inside the fuel filler cap or on a plate on the driver’s door sill. Alternatively TyreSafe has developed an on-line and iPhone app. Users simply enter their car registration number plate for the correct tyre pressure. It’s available to use and download by visiting tyresafe.org.

to several threats. The most obvious one is that carrying a large amount of money is always dangerous, as the seller could simply take the money with no intention of handing over the car. More importantly, there is no ‘Proof of Purchase' when you pay for a vehicle in cash, meaning you have no comeback with the seller should something go wrong. The AA Car Data Check is the best way for buyers to spot the difference between a bargain and a nightmare on wheels. Buyers should get an AA Car Data Check before they purchase to be sure. For just over £20 buyers will be informed if a vehicle has been stolen, is an insurance writeoff or ‘total loss' or has any outstanding finance registered against it. In addition, an accurate valuation will be provided. All this information is also protected by a £30,000 Guarantee should the data provided by the AA Car Data Check be incorrect. Tiffany concludes, "Paying cash for a vehicle means the seller can effectively disappear without a trace. So if that bargain turns out to be recorded as stolen with the police, an insurance write-off or on outstanding finance, the seller will be long gone and so will the money. A vehicle history check can offer buyers the vital protection they need against the risk of buying a dodgy vehicle with something to hide. Don't take the risk, always get a vehicle history check and never pay in cash for added protection."

I don’t move for money because if I do that I’m not here for the right reasons.” The former Barcelona youth coach and Maccabi Tel Aviv championship-winning manager outlined his intention to add fresh faces to the Brighton squad before the transfer window closes at the end of August. “It’s not about the number of players but we are missing four or five players who would normally have a chance to start, through injury. We will have to cover these positions. “It’s not easy though because we want to choose the correct players, and some want to take their time because some of them have other options. We have a style which the players know and many players or agents have called me because they want to come here. That means we are doing things right.” Meanwhile, Oscar admitted that his football and coaching philosophy was

inspired by his former Barca manager Johan Cruyff, and the Spaniard aspires to have a similar impact on the Albion players. “For me, Johan was the most important coach to learn about football and with a very clear philosophy. I learned a lot as his player

when I played for Barcelona. “Every day and every training session I learned something new and that is what I want to achieve with the Brighton players. If they learn something new every day we will become a better team.”

Albion eye move for Swansea's Kemy Agustien

Kemy Agustien held talks with Brighton about a move

DEFENDER GORDON GREER and midfielder Liam Bridcutt have been named in Gordon Strachan’s Scotland squad to face England next month. Greer is hoping for his first Scotland cap. Both Greer and Bridcutt were named in Strachan’s previous squad earlier this summer but both had to withdraw through injury.

The Scotland manager has named a 29-man squad for the friendly against the Auld Enemy on August 14 at Wembley. The fixture is part of the FA’s 150 year celebrations and will see the two sides face each other for the first time since the Euro 2000 Play-Offs in 1999, where England triumphed 2-1 over two legs.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION are understood to be lining up a move for Swansea's Dutch midfielder Kemy Agustien. Swansea are willing to let Agustien leave the Liberty Stadium this summer as he does not figure in Michael Laudrup's long-term plans. The 26-year-old, who has one year left on his contract, was left out of the club's pre-season tour of Holland and is set to

find himself well down the pecking order this season following the arrivals of Jonjo Shelvey and Jose Canas this summer. Brighton boss Oscar Garcia is keen to add to his midfield options and he is thought to be an admirer of Dutchman Agustien. Agustien is believed to have held talks with Garcia earlier this week and he is hopeful of agreeing a deal to bring the former Birmingham City man to the Amex Stadium.

Oscar Garcia signs contract with Brighton and Hove Albion BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION'S new head coach Oscar Garcia has signed a threeyear deal with the club. The 40-year-old quit Maccabi Tel Aviv to take up the role at the Championship side in June after the dismissal of former boss Gus Poyet. Garcia has now penned his contract and he told Brighton's website: "I am delighted to have signed a long-term contract with the club. "I am now very much looking forward to the challenge ahead." Brighton said the post of head coach was a

newly-created role when Garcia arrived at the south-coast outfit. Garcia played for Barcelona for six years and has also coached their youth team before guiding Maccabi to the league title last season. "Brighton are one of the most exciting clubs in Europe and the potential here is very good," added Garcia. "The squad is strong and the footballing set-up is excellent. The aim is to continue the good progress that has been made in recent seasons. "Pre-season preparations are going

well and, like the supporters, I am looking forward to an exciting season." The moves of coach Ruben Martinez and fitness coach Juan Torrijo Navaro in leaving Maccabi and joining Garcia at Brighton have also been confirmed. Former Seagulls left-back Nathan Jones has also returned to the team as assistant head coach. "The club has made significant progress in the past three seasons, and our aim is to continue this progress under Oscar's guidance," said Brighton chairman Tony Bloom.

"His footballing principles and philosophies will ensure we continue to play with the style and in the way our fans have become accustomed."
