In a global age, it’s easy to forget the treasures on our doorsteps.
The local school, the local community group, the local pub, the local church - and especially the local newspaper! But at the economic heart of all this is the local highstreetwithitsrichkaleidoscope of independent shops and traders. Keeping the high street vibrant has long been a cherished goalofthisnewspaperandwehave proudly supported campaigns as diverse at Independents’ Day and Shop Local. This week, we are delighted to welcome a Sussex-based community-minded enterprise that takes that sense of local support to a whole new level. LocalPuzzle.com pieces together local businesses with local people and local good causes. It makes money for them all in a unique cycle of success. Founder and creator Anthony Stonham from Horsham has a huge personal commitment to andpassionforindependentbusinesses. “There is nothing more importantinatowncentrethanadiverse and successful local shopping centre packed with the broadest

Sadly, too many towns have become identical copies of each other full of bland national brands. “It’s the independent businesses with their own unique understanding of each community and its needs and usually an overwhelming desire to offer the best customer service that make all the difference. LocalPuzzle.com was an idea born three years ago from the motivation to create awayofhelpingindependent businesses grow even in the faceofadversityfromnotjust a recession, but the increasing presence of large chains on the high street and the proliferation of websites offering footfall for steep, unsustainable discounts.

LocalPuzzle.com is unique in that it helps drive new business for independent traders without needing
them to change what they do, and without requiring them to make special offers or unprofitable discounts. It does
this by encouraging people to make subtle changes to their spending behaviour in order to earn “points” which
in turn help them win cash which theycanthentypically choose to spend back in the community, to win more. Not only this, but LocalPuzzle.com returns moneydirectlytothecommunity, donating cash prizes to local schools, charities and other good causes. From the business point of view, LocalPuzzle.comprovides a no-risk way to attractnewcustomersandkeep existing customers coming back for more. Unlike anything else on the market, LocalPuzzle.com requires zero investment in equipment or tools by the trader, no sign up fees anddoesn’trequirethem tomakecripplingcutstotheir prices or business model. All a shopper needs is a smartphone and a desire to win a bit of cash whilst doing something good for their local community.
We joined LocalPuzzle.com as premium members in January and it’s been a huge success for us. We contacted Anthony after so many of our customers asked us to sign up. When he explained the scheme it was a no brainer decision. Since then we’ve noticed a major rise is new customers who are coming from across Horsham and from others who passed by for years but not come in. The trade figures on our trader dashboard speak for themselves! Lucinda, Westons Farm Shop

High in the sky: Images of the Brighton i360 captured by a drone
Funding
Hove Plinth The Hove Civic Society has been awarded a £20,000 grant from The Headley Trust to help fund construction of the Hove Plinth. Karin Janzon, project manager, said: “This is really exciting news; the grant will help us take a substantial step towards realising our aim of bringing new sculpture to Hove seafront.” For more on Hove Plinth, and the sculptures set to be displayed, see page 11. It’s nice up here. These spectacular images of the Brighton i360 give the first glimpse of what it might look like from the top of the tower. The iconic structure at the West Pier site is at its full height - 162 metres - and the futuristic glass pod, which is being constructed in France, is set to arrive in Brighton in the next month. The pod will allow 200 visitors to ride up the tower and view the city and its surroundings when it opens in summer 2016. A beach building is now being constructed at the foot of the Brighton i360, and will include a 400 seat restaurant, a shop, children’s play zone, exhibition space, tea rooms, and conference and event facilities (Photographs: Brighton i360/ Visual Air)
Hospital’s urgent and emergency services judged “inadequate” by health inspectors Olivia Lerche @OliviaLerche A health watchdog has announced today (Friday), that urgent and emergency services at the Royal Sussex County Hospital are “inadequate”. Inspectors said patient safety at the hospital was “‘compromised”, there weren’t enough nurses on duty with the right skills, and there was overcrowding in the emergency department. The hospital, run by Brighton and Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust has been told it must make “significant improvements” to the
emergency department following a visit by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in July. Professor Edward Baker, deputy chief inspector of hospitals, said he was concerned the trust has not improved since its previous inspection. He added: “Some patients coming into the urgent and emergency services departments continue to experience a poor level of care and treatment.” The report said overcrowding in the department meant patients’ privacy and dignity was “not consistently met” despite the best efforts of staff. Paul Wallman, emergency
department clinical lead said: “On days when we are extremely busy some patients who are brought in by ambulance have to wait for longer than any of us want and of course we know that this can be an uncomfortable, difficult, and even a frightening experience.” He said staff do their “utmost” to get patients into cubicles as quickly as possible but there is often “not the capacity” to accommodate them. Mr Wallman added: “However, once a patient comes through those doors they are in our care. We take that responsibility very seriously and always do our best for them.”

To celebrate the BT speaking clock reaching its 70th year, a competition was launched to find the new voice. Applicants were invited to leave telephone recordings of their dulcet tones, with the proceeds of each call going to Children in Need. Brighton and Hove resident Sara Mendes da Costa, a telemarketer and part-time voiceover artist, was announced as the winner on BBC One’s Children in Need three weeks later.
The council is expected to announce whether taxi app Uber will be allowed to operate in Brighton and Hove today (Friday). A decision was adjourned after a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council’s licencing panel on Monday. There has been resistance from local taxi firms, which were concerned Uber would not adhere to council rules on cabs. If the licence is granted, Uber would operate from an office in North Street.

Market traders step up pressure on Ethical Property >> Continued from page 1 (49%) of the market’s income, including rents. Some traders - including many who are demanding to know what Ethical Property Company (EPC) has done with its fees - have already begun planning for a rent strike, if EPC’s contract is not terminated immediately, from November 1. Confidential accounts show that EPC charges fees of £11,462 a month - plus £1,389 a month in “turnover fees” from stallholders - in return for running the market, which was regarded as one of the most exciting developments in the city when it opened in July last year. Income from stallholders, for rents and services, is only £21,209. The amount spent on marketing the open market - owned by Brighton Open Market CIC (CIC) - is put at about £1,000 a month while repayments on a £1 million start-up loan are about £3,700. In a five-page “recovery plan” seen by Brighton & Hove Independent, EPC

says: “Cashflow is now the critical factor. Without a cash injection, the CIC will run out of cash in October. The directors have a responsibility to ensure the CIC does not trade in a knowingly insolvent position.” The plan - which has not been published or discussed in public
addresses several issues: limited weekend operations; insufficient footfall; a “mismatch” between what is on offer and customers; unsustainable business rates (£30,000, compared with a previously estimated £10,000); management inefficiencies; and alleged “weakness” in the CIC
board and “community engagement”. The recovery plan from EPC does not mention any failures by EPC. Much to the anger of some traders. One said: “We want them gone. We can’t afford the rent - and we’re not going to pay it. They are sucking all the money out of the market - and we could do a
better job ourselves.” Traders have compiled a 30-point dossier of alleged management failures by the “ethical” and “green” management company including: “For a year, there was no mixed recycling on the site”. It also highlights “heavy-handed bullying of traders”. Oxford-based EPC

Jeremy Corbyn rents his constituency office in Islington from the company; Channel 4 comedian Mark Thomas has been one of its highestprofile shareholders. Nick Forster, the company’s director of operations, directed questions to “Councillor Kevin Davies” (sic), the CIC chair - believed to be a confusion between Cllr Kevin Allen and council officer Richard Davies, the city council’s project manager for the market, who – strangely, according to some - takes minutes at CIC board meetings. Cllr Allen did not return calls.

Three Hove Plinth sculptures to cost up to £250,000 to create £250,000 to construct. The Hove Civic Society is now looking for donors - with a range of founder packages and corporate sponsorship opportunities- “to help make Hove Plinth a reality”.
The maquettes of the three sculptures set to adorn the Hove Plinth were unveiled at a reception hosted by the mayor on Monday. Each sculpture will be in place on the plinth for 12-
18 months and then found a permanent position in Hove or Brighton, which could include corporate headquarters or public spaces. The three sculptures are expected to cost
Wright’s design is part mechanical model of the solar system, part film camera, and part ship’s compass. The most popular landscapes and iconic images associated with Hove will orbit the system rather than planets. Wright intends to choose the final objects, which will include both present day and historical items, by consulting with local residents and groups.

Pierre Diamantopoulo tells us more about his sculpture, Flight of the Langoustine, which is to be made with coated bronze and steel.
Flight of the Langoustine Pierre Diamantopoulo
What was the idea behind the sculpture? “Flight of the Langoustine” was the first in the series of sculptures made on Brighton beach after a bit of beachcombing. A storm had deposited a mangled lobster pot yards from my studio under the arches. This washed-up object had been a means of escape for the lobsters and this translated itself into a human story of exodus and release - a dash for freedom. What is the meaning behind the work? Here too, a liberating energy gives way to a profound sense of unrest. These are also androgynous and anonymous figures flying in defiance or fleeing, challenged by the confines of their environment. Grouped in unearthly compositions, truly transcending the confines of the ground, these figures are light and delicate.
Davies’ fluid, amorphous sculpture cast in blue resin aims to mirror the organic movements of nature; the sea breeze, gliding birds and rolling waves. It will also mimic the diversity and energy of the people surrounding it, moving, dancing and playing. The shape of the sculpture echoes Davies’ memories of seaside treats and sweets from the early 1980s.
They balance improbably on geometric planes, perched or floating freely on forms forged to suit an allegorical purpose. They are at once laconic and profound, frivolous and boisterous, occupying the air like a flock of birds. Behind it all is a discomfiting sense of precariousness, contained
by a carefully calculated composition. Why should it be displayed at Hove seafront? This sculpture has been designed to be open, letting light, landscape and seascape through. The graphic nature of the piece will stand out well against sky and sea.

100 years If you earn an average salary, and want to buy an average property in Brighton and Hove, it could take more than 100 years to save up for a deposit. That’s according to research by online estate agents HouseSimple.com, which said the average wage in the city is £23,488 - and if 10% was saved a year, it would take 104 years to have a large enough deposit for an “average” £350,222 home.

Waste House A Brighton building made of old toothbrushes, carpet tiles, denim jeans, discarded bricks and wood, received national recognition and a £1,000 prize. The University of Brighton’s Waste House was a finalist for the 2015 Stephen Lawrence Prize, funded by the Marco Goldschmied Foundation. A Hampshire project took the award but the Waste House scooped the special prize after judges said: “It has sufficient scientific integrity to be taken seriously by the construction industry and just enough political clout to influence recycling policy. It is clear this interesting project will continue to question important issues of recycling that affect everyone.”
The first Brighton Schnauzerfest saw 35 waggy-tailed dogs turn out at Stanmer Park on Saturday. The dogs gathered for a walk through the woods, as part of a nationwide weekend of walks and events for schnauzer owners. The Brighton event, organised by Jeremy Diaper, owner of schnauzers Trevor and Geof said: “We were delighted with the response and the fantastic turnout. The dogs - and their humans - made new friends and had a lot of fun. The next event will be October 2016 and we’d love to see more people join us then”. A raffle at the end of the walk - first prize was a solid chocolate schnauzer from Choccywoccydoodah - raised £358.75 for two animal rescue centres.

City centre school Middle Street Primary and Nursery School is competing with organisations from across the country to win £25,000 of funding so pupils can learn IT skills to help with their future education and employment. Local Brighton firm One Family will award the cash to the community project that has the most votes in the country. Laura Burrows, a teacher at Middle Street, said: “Our computer equipment is outdated and slow, and we’re struggling to give pupils the start they deserve. “Brighton has 1,500 tech and digital businesses and the numbers are growing all the time. “If we get this funding we’ll be able to give them more opportunities to learn vital skills like coding, as well as developing their creative skills around graphic and games design. Having up to date equipment will make a massive difference to our children. We’re the only community project in Brighton going for this funding, so please vote for our bid before October 31.” Finn Johnson, a nine-year-old pupil at the school, said: “‘I want to work in tech when I’m older and would really like the chance to practice my skills at school. I might want to be a games designer, but I also like coding and using programmes to make films and music. Please vote for us!” To vote please visit: foundation.onefamily.com
Rent shortfall Private renters in Brighton and Hove who claim housing benefit could see a £242-a-month shortfall, as support is set to be frozen until 2020. Shelter, a housing and homelessness charity, identified Brighton and Hove as a “blackspot” where families could face extreme shortfalls between their housing benefit and rent - as support is cut and rent prices continue to rise. Housing benefit helps families on lower incomes to pay their rent, and is already restricted to cover rents in the cheapest third of privately rented homes. In the southeast, Brighton and Hove is projected to be the fifth worst hit local authority area, for shortfalls between housing benefit and rent increases, according to Shelter. The charity warned that with housing benefit falling far short of private rents many families could be forced to take ever more desperate measures to pay their rent, or face losing their home.

The AITC sessions use the power of football to help people overcome mental health issues and challenge the stigma surrounding mental health. The event was supported by American Express volunteers who helped with logistics and refereed matches alongside AITC coaches. The AITC Mental Wellbeing Cup was won by the Croydon Eagles, Brighton’s AITC William Collier team won the Plate, and “Fair Play” was awarded to Bexhill’s Lawn Court teams. Event

A group of brides were spotted strolling along the seafront on Saturday. They were raising cash for Rockinghorse, a Brightonbased children’s charity, in the annual Hen Heaven Here Comes the Bride event. The 15 party planners donned bridalwear for the walk from Saltdean to the West Pier, and raised £1,626.85. The walk has raised £10,000 for Rockinghorse in the last four years.

Rachel Hyde, a Brighton illustration student, transformed Posh Totty Design’s shop front into a work of art. Her design took more than seven hours to draw on to the North Laine shop window. Inspired by Brighton, it features the city’s skyline, with added fireworks. Rachel said: “The design came about because I live in Brighton and I’m particularly inspired by buildings. They’re all around us, yet a lot of people miss the architectural detail of buildings that they walk past every day.”
Brighton and Hove City Council is offering free courses to increase confidence for cyclists. The courses are open to anyone aged 14 and over who lives, works, or studies in the East Central Brighton area, covering Tarner, Albion Hill, Kemp Town, Craven Vale, Bristol Estate, Queens Park, Hanover, and Elm Grove. Why I set up the Brighton branch of the Women’s Equality Party
University hosts Great Debate
The UK’s newest political force already has 45,000 members since it launched in April, and the Women’s Equality Party outlined its first policies this week. The Brighton branch - which is one of the largest in the UK - held a meeting at The Synergy Centre in West Street on Wednesday, and around 130 women - and men - were eager to find out more. CELIA WILSON, the leader of the Brighton group, tells us why there is a need for the new political party. One Thursday morning in late April, I heard Sandi Toskvig on Woman’s Hour telling Jenni Murray why she was leaving The News Quiz to start a new political party for women’s equality, and jumped at the chance to start a branch in Brighton. I was motivated by frustration with the lack of women in power, the portrayal of women in the media, the fact that the issues of women’s equality which have always felt so important and outrageous to me, are not taken seriously in mainstream politics. Change is taking too long - when I look at my daughter and her friends, who at 22 years old have the whole world in front of them, I know that I need to be doing whatever I can
to make equality happen right now. Brighton and Hove is no different to any other part of the UK, in that every day women face inequality at work, in politics, and in public life. Although women make up 51% of the population, they are only 29% of MPs, 25% of judges, and 24% of FTSE 100 directors. This means that in politics, the law, and in business, women’s voices are not getting heard. Women still occupy the lowest-paid jobs - threequarters of the people who’ve done minimum wage jobs in the last 10 years are women. Working women earn 81p for every pound a man earns - and at the current rate it will be 70 years before that gap eventually closes.
Around 1.2 million women suffer domestic abuse every year, and every day there are 250 rapes or attempted rapes. Conviction rates are low. Women are represented in adverts and the media as sex objects and victims, rather than individuals with ambitions and ideas. Our children are held back by the limits imposed on them by gender stereotypes. Starting the Brighton branch was my chance to contribute to a movement which can make gender equality a reality in this country. As well as Sandi Toksvig and Catherine Mayer, who started the party, and Sophie Walker, who leads it, there are hundreds of amazingly talented women - and men - behind this party and I count myself
incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to be a part of it. When we started there were two of us making up the Brighton branch, and we were one of three branches in the country. Now I work with a team of 29 volunteers from all walks of life, we have 1,400 followers on Facebook and nearly 600 members and supporters in our branch. We’re one of a crowd of 65 branches across the UK and we’re growing all the time. At our first meeting in Saltdean Lido back in May, local people told us about their experiences of sexism and inequality at work and at home, their frustration at lack of representation, and the way women are represented in the media as sex objects and victims.
They told us of their frustration about the gender stereotypes imposed on their children and their hopes that this party had a real chance of making changes so that we offer a better world for the next generation of boys and girls. The output from that first meeting - and the several we have had since - have contributed to the forming of the policies which were launched by the WEP nationally on Tuesday, and by our own branch on Wednesday. Wednesday’s policy launch saw 130 women and men come together to say we are not going to wait for equality, we are going to make it happen - now. David Dimbleby, Fatboy Slim, and Alison Lapper, will take part in the University of Brighton’s Great Debate, which aims to gauge public opinion on the university’s involvement in the community. The celebrity panelists have links with the university, and will be joined by its vicechancellor Professor Julian Crampton. Mr Dimbleby, BBC’s Question Time presenter, said: “As a regular visitor to the city I am looking forward to chairing this debate. I expect it to provide a platform for lively discussion about the city’s future and the role of the university in it. Debates are always unpredictable and I have no doubt this one will be too.” The Great Debate will be held at the Sallis Benney Theatre, at the university’s Grand Parade campus in Brighton, on November 17, starting at 7pm. WHAT CAN YOU REMEMBER ABOUT 2007?
Gordon Brown was both the Chancellor and Prime Minister that year and the financial crisis kicked in with the collapse of then Northern Rock Bank. Many businesses faced an uncertain future and it was against this difficult financial climate that a local dealership group was ‘relaunched’. The Birchwood Group has seen many changes in the intervening 8 years, not least a move from an inert, reactive business to a dynamic ambitious group. Here are some of the highlights from their journey:
• APPOINTMENT AS THE LARGEST FORD TRANSIT CENTRE IN SUSSEX • APPOINTMENT AS THE ONLY FORDSTORE IN SUSSEX • APPOINTMENT AS THE LARGEST SKODA FRANCHISE PARTNER IN SUSSEX • APPOINTMENT AS THE LARGEST KIA FRANCHISE PARTNER IN SUSSEX In the last 18 months the Group has invested heavily in new dealership builds and upgrades for existing locations to prepare for future growth. The brand new purpose built Kia facility in Eastbourne opened in 2014 and will be joined this month by a brand new state of the art Skoda showroom, also located in Eastbourne. The existing Hastings site underwent a complete refurbishment to re-open as a FordStore facility, representing the Ford performance heritage with the iconic Mustang and Focus RS through to the latest premier Vignale range. Pete Parker, Director said ‘In the last two years all of our sites have undergone significant building upgrading. By relocating our Eastbourne Skoda dealership to a purpose built facility we can now convert the existing location ready for our next exciting opportunity’. It’s not just buildings that the Group has invested in; currently participating in the Ford CEM Movement, the management team are actively encouraging their teams to be more involved with strategic decision making. Pete Parker said ‘Whilst our buildings are important, our greatest asset is our people and the commitment they bring to the workplace. We wanted to harness their energy and knowledge to help further achieve all our potential’. The Group actively seek to promote from within whenever possible and have successfully extended the traditional technician apprenticeship schemes to offer apprenticeship opportunities in Sales, Customer Service and IT. With future growth in mind the Group have just announced a fourth franchise will be added to their portfolio. Pete Parker said ‘We are proud to announce the launch of a brand new Mitsubishi dealership in Eastbourne which is due to open in late 2015.’ The new venture will be located in the building vacated by the Skoda relocation and a full refurbishment is now underway. This refurbishment will also see the Group open a dedicated new and used vehicle preparation centre which in turn will enable the expansion of Transit Centre workshop capacity across the Ford business. Pete Parker added ‘By extending our opening hours and investing in workshop facilities, we are set to double our Transit Centre vehicle workshop capacity and space by late 2015’. All of this growth has led to the Group launching a major recruitment drive and they are actively looking for talented, ambitious, energetic people to join them. If you think you could succeed in one of the following roles then now could be the time to make your move.
MITSUBISHI BRAND MANAGER

This is a rare opportunity and challenge for an ambitious and motivated individual.

Top 15 council officers cost us all £1.3m a year
Clockwise from top left: Geoff Raw, chief executive; Denise D’souza, ASC commissioning unit; Paula Murray, assistant chief executive; Pinaki Ghoshal, director children’s services; Tom Scanlon, public health; Tracy John, head of housing
Geoff Raw has been appointed as the £150,000-a-year chief executive of Brighton and Hove City Council. The interim boss was picked by a panel on Tuesday, and was one of three candidates interviewed from 11 applications. He replaces Penny Thompson, whose departure from the council in June cost the taxpayer £270,000. Mr Raw was appointed acting chief executive from July, until securing the job permanently. The news comes as the latest figures on senior officers’ salaries were released yesterday (Thursday). The top 15 posts, cost the taxpayer a total £1,336,423 a year - and two of them are “vacant”.
However, one of the vacant posts - executive director of environment, development and housing, and Mr Raw’s old job - is being covered by a joint internal "actingup" arrangement - between Nick Hibberd and Richard Bradley. There is reportedly a short-term saving to the council by covering the vacancy in this way. The other vacant post is for the chief finance officer. Rachel Musson, who is six months' pregnant, is the interim executive director for finance and resourcing, for whose services the council pays a recruitment agency £999-per-day. The post is due to be advertised "very shortly". The head of housing post was until recently vacant, but Tracy John started on September 28. On Mr Raw’s appointment, Warren
Morgan, leader of the council said: "I'm delighted that Geoff Raw will be recommended as chief executive, with unanimous cross party agreement, to lead the council into a period of enormous challenges, changes and opportunities. “Geoff has been with the council for over five years across three different political leaderships, so he commands respect and goodwill across the chamber. He not only knows the city and the council inside out, but is someone with the experience, ideas and skills to tackle the extremely tough times we now must face together. One example of the kind of innovation he brings is the housing scheme I announced this week, which he has been instrumental in bringing together."

‘The Good Divorce’
How do you know?
Jo provides a free meeting to discuss which dispute resolution option is best Open Saturdays and evenings to be flexible around your job
As a Collaborative Family Lawyer I help couples understand that the divorce process doesn’t have to be about point scoring where one party wins and the other loses. It’s a process whereby you get help in finding a respectful way of communicating. It is built on trust and transparency; all advice is given openly, meaning there is less confusion and less stress.
■ Collaborative Law ■ Mediation ■ Negotiated Settlements
However Iam often asked can a divorce ever really be ‘pain free’. And I have to say probably not; but the pain can be minimised considerably both in the short and long term by being well informed and having space to think.
Jo will be delighted to discuss (free of charge and confidentially) how she can assist you and your family.
When a relationship breaks down families will not just need the help of Lawyers. As such I work with a whole range of others who provide expert support-financial advisers, family consultants and therapists. We all commit to helping couples separate in a way that promotes respect, avoids battles and puts the needs of any children involved first. Put most simply we work in the most constructive and non-confrontational way possible.
Call today: 07780 676 212, Email: jo@osullivanfamilylaw.c or visit her firm’s site on www.osullivanfamilylaw.com
However at the start of the process I will always talk through how committed clients are and how they reached the decision to separate. This is vital couples need to feel the process is one they are fully in control of.
I can help you bypass the truly awful adversarial process of the courts at the time of the breakup
Some couples won’t be ready to follow through and decide the relationship may still be worth trying to save. It’s not unusual for one party to seek initial advice and only come back and start the process months or even years later.
This is a good thing as ending a relationship should never be a rushed decision. So how do you know? Here are my tips for understanding when it is right to start the process. 1. Before ‘walking out’ on your relationship ask yourself whatam I still prepared to try to make this work. 2. Make a list highlighting what works and what needs to change. 3. Stop asking friends and family for advice – take some time out by yourself and think what do I think is the right thing to do? 4. If you then decide you do want
to start the process of separating consider the financial practicalities – such as mortgage, pension, and loan commitments. 5.Think about what’s important to you. If you have considered all the above and still want to go ahead then contact a Lawyer for an initial discussion. I will always see clients for an informal chat and to help them find out what they need to know. No one expects you to know exactly when the right time to leave is but be sure to talk to your partner, talk to a lawyer and make sure you are fully informed.

Business A meeting of minds for Brighton and Hove businesses Brighton Summit saw more than 300 business people, freelancers, and entrepreneurs in the city come together for a day of speakers, networking, workshops, and learning. The annual Chamber of Commerce-led conference, held at the Clarendon Centre on Friday (October 16), centred on the idea of business growth. A Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce spokesperson said it was “a day of discovery, challenges, inspiration and fun”. With more than 50 speakers including Jim Duffy, founder of Entrepreneurial Spark, and Nikki Gatenby, managing director of Propellernet - sessions varied from discussions on growing your business, to colouring for stress relief. Delegates were able to customise their day, with more than 20 different sessions to choose from. Mr Duffy said: “It was fantastic to attend the Brighton Summit as a keynote speaker and to engage with business leaders at all levels. I have always believed in the importance of nurturing a
#GoDo attitude in order to engage your potential and excel in the business world and it was great to see this resonate with the other speakers and the audience. However, as Giles Palmer from Brandwatch said, it’s important to remember the importance of being proactive, if you’re not ready for action then this is not the industry for you. “The Brighton Summit was testament to the fact that the decade of the female entrepreneur has begun, and it was great to meet such driven businesswomen and hear from PropellorNet’s Nicki Gatteny. The Brighton Chamber is an incredibly open and progressive organisation, which is always looking for new ways to engage and engender members, and I’m proud to be a part of their fabulous network.”

Waterside’s waterfront wonder: The Hilton Brighton Metropole is a unique treasure It is 125 years since the Hotel Metropole opened on Brighton seafront. Its successor - the Hilton Brighton Metropole - is marking the anniversary with an impressive exhibition of the people and events that are central to the city’s development. The exhibition was created in partnership with KEVIN NEWMAN, a historian, teacher and founder of AllInclusive History, a specialist in walking tours in and around Brighton and Hove. Any Brightonian has the Metropole in their blood. I live outside my home city these days, yet every day I see a picture of the hotel we have up in our house (the paddling pool across from the hotel was where my wife played as a girl). My parents partied there. My father-in-law was a chef there. The family had Sunday lunches there for many years. So, when I was asked by the Hilton Group to research the “old lady” for her 125th anniversary, I was dubious how much there was to find out. I didn’t think that there would be much.
I was wrong. During my exploration of the “Met’s” archives, what struck me was not just how much has taken place in this grand lateVictorian building, but how lucky we are to have this rare redbrick and terracotta gem in our midst. The Metropole (or Hotel Metropole as it was originally called) is incredible - it has witnessed and created numerous firsts. And yet, unbelievably, the Met isn’t one of Brighton’s numerous listed buildings. I hope, you’ll agree we’ve perhaps taken the Met for granted for too long. Also,
that we not only need to cherish this unique piece of architecture, but preserve it for future generations as a listed building, too. Surviving 125 years wasn’t always guaranteed. Detractors during construction (18881890) predicted hotels as magnificent as the Metropole wouldn’t be viable. The Brighton and Hove Gazette, however, correctly predicted there was “plenty of room for as new and elegant [a] hotel as the Metropole”. The Met was built by the Gordon Hotels Group, following their decision to build equally-prestigious hotels
in Monte Carlo, London, and Cannes. Brighton’s Hotel Metropole was one of the first in Britain to hold this prestigious international name for hotels; ironically, it is also one of the last to do so, and the oldest British “Metropole” in existence to have kept its name since opening. So it is not just “our” Metropole. It is the Metropole. It is also precious, as it was - and is - unique. Alfred Waterhouse, the famous and successful Victorian architect who designed the Natural History Museum as well as the hotel, never built any other seaside public buildings or hotels. His only other offering in our city, Hove Town Hall, burned down in 1966. Brighton’s Metropole is not only our only Waterhouse building in the city, but it is also a portrait of Britain at its richest and Brighton at its best. The Second World War hit Brighton and the hotel hard. By 1959, the hotel was outdated, needing rejuvenation and experiencing the “70-yearitch” Brighton’s hotels seem to be plagued with. Gordon’s were losing £10,000 a year on the
hotel and looking either to demolish the building or to change all but the bottom two floors into flats. The days of large, prestigious hotels were gone it seemed. Resorts like Brighton were doomed, replaced by the start of cheaper, overseas package holidays. The hotel’s once-illustrious Italian and Winter Gardens lost their romantic appeal as encroaching tower blocks sprang up over the town. Thankfully, one man
believed large hotels could survive - and Brighton had a future. “Nothing but the best is good enough for Brighton,” said the Metropole’s new owner, Harold Poster, chief executive officer of Associated Veneers and Plastics (AVP). The Metropole became the jewel in the crown of his industrial and commercial empire, so much that he built most of the modern hotels bearing the name of his “favourite”.
Brighton’s Metropole is not only our only Waterhouse building in the city, but it is also a portrait of Britain at its richest - and Brighton at its best

A self-made Londoner, Poster also went on to buy other Brighton hotels, bankroll the Brighton Festival, and purchase the West Pier. Poster ensured not only did it remain a hotel, but also the hotel to be seen in once again, if you were rulers or royalty. It had always been Brighton’s biggest hotel (initially the biggest in the country outside of London), but it was now to be even bigger. The hotel

embraced 20th-century consumer needs and became Brighton’s first residential conference and exhibition centre - more than a decade before the Brighton Centre was built. The unsafe roof timbers were replaced to support the country’s first rooftop restaurant, the “Starlit” in 1961. Its grounds included Britain’s first Europeanstyle licensed casino from 1962 and it boasted by the late 1970s 100,000 square feet of conference
and exhibition space. Conservative and Labour finally had a Brighton venue befitting party conferences. Since AVP’s purchase of the hotel, it has had a number of owners, right up to the present owners, the Hilton Group. They are rightly proud of the unique Victorian survivor they purchased: its architecture and heritage. The Metropole deserves far more than being somewhere Brightonians
and visitors to our city ever take for granted. It tells the tale of Brighton from its late-Victorian grandeur of the resort’s heyday. The hotel was called brash, loud, shocking - but these are all descriptions of Brighton. Hotels have to stand out to be noticed and the Metropole certainly did - and its uniqueness means it still does. That uniqueness deserves protecting and we should list Waterhouse’s waterside wonder now.
The changing face of the “old lady”. Harold Poster (top right) points out his plans for redevelopment of the Metropole in 1960 - which had been opened in 1890 by the Gordon Hotels Group
Kevin Newman is the author of the forthcoming Brighton and Hove In 50 Buildings, to be published by Amberley Books in April next year, price £13.50. He presents talks about Brighton and Hove hotels among other topics and his next project is to track down all the Metropole hotels across the world past and present for his book Metropoles Apart, due out at the end of next year. Maggie embraces cabaret on a big night out in Soho Following a second sellout run at the Edinburgh Fringe, Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho is returning to the Brighton Comedy Festival for a date at the Corn Exchange on Saturday, October 24, (9.30pm). Spokeswoman Hannah Allan said: “On the eve of the vote on Section 28, Maggie gets lost in Soho and accidentally becomes a cabaret superstar, but will she change her mind about the homophobic bill before it’s too late? “Performer and co-writer Matt Tedford is pulling on the tights once more to give audiences an insight into the difference an individual could have made with a sideswipe at homophobia and censorship. “Co-written and directed by Jon Brittain, this delightful odyssey about gay rights, the ’80s and disco has received

Musical innovators Asian Dub Foundation will perform their latest live soundtrack to George Lucas’s 1971 visionary cult sci-fi classic THX 1138 at Brighton Dome on Tuesday, October 27 (8pm). Retaining much of Lalo Schiffrin’s score and soundtrack, Asian Dub Foundation’s new interpretation creates a memorable live experience to Lucas’s chilling, stylistic, dystopian fantasy where mood-stabilising drugs are mandatory, sex is prohibited, and a young Robert Duval rages against the system. Asian Dub Foundation’s Steve Savale said: “After the success of Battle of Algiers and La Haine, I wanted to find a film that’s technically possible to rescore so that audiences can actually watch the film and experience the music live. “It was very important to respect the avant-garde, classical, discordant soundtrack that’s there - by one of my great alltime heroes Lalo Schiffrin - where the only melodic instrument is the flute - so Nathan ‘Flutebox’ Lee’s interpretation of those discordant strings is very relevant to the film. It represents the emotion.”
Asian Dub Foundation
Steve highlights the film’s prescience:“It’s got religious fundamentalism, mad, outof-control consumerism and a totalitarian centralised computerised system of domination. I think all of those things exist now.” On release THX 1138 was a box-office disaster and almost destroyed Lucas’s career on the spot before Star Wars was conceived. Now considered a cult classic (last year it was included in Time Out’s 100 Best Sci Fi movies), the original soundtrack has been widely sampled by a host of influential electronic artists including, Nine Inch Nails, The Shamen, Meat Beat Manifesto, UNKLE, Orbital, Front 242, Laibach and Clock DVA. Produced by Francis Ford
Coppola THX 1138 was George Lucas’s directorial debut. Three times Academy Award Winner Walter Murch - famed for his sound design for Apocalypse Now -made the film’s soundtrack and also co-wrote the script with Lucas. Asian Dub Foundation are a British electronica band that play a blend of rapcore, dub, dancehall and ragga. They also use rock instruments and are partly influenced by punk music. Tickets cost £20 or £17.50. There is a £2 per order charge. Additional postage charges (50p standard or £1.50 recorded delivery) apply. BREMF directors return to origins with female theme Phil Hewitt @BrightonIndy Arguably this is the year the Brighton Early Music Festival comes of age, feels co-artistic director Clare Norburn. The 2015 programme (October 23 - November 8) puts the emphasis firmly on early-music women composers, giving the fullest expression yet to the passion that prompted Clare and fellow-artistic director Deborah Roberts to set the festival up in the first place. “This is our 14th festival, and it comes down to a lot of hard work, but the fact is we have also got a very loyal audience,” says Clare. “We would not have been able to carry on if we had not had that loyal audience. We have been able to offer something a little bit different, but that also fits into Brighton but also brings in people from further afield. “But really one of the
most exciting things is the theme of women this year, and it is only this year that we have felt we have been able to take that leap. Until then it would have been too much of a risk. But in the last couple of years we have got a real sense that the audience trusts our programming now. “People don’t in the first few years, which is absolutely normal, but we have now got such a good strong following that people think ‘if the Brighton Early Music Festival are programming it, it must be good.’ They don’t just want to hear Monteverdi’s Vespers. They are prepared to come to see and hear things they don’t know. I think it takes ten years to build up that kind of trust, and we have got that now.” Which means Clare and Deborah can, in effect, return to their starting point: early women composers. “It’s something that has always been close to mine
and Deborah’s hearts. It’s the thing that brought us together. We would
In a way it is a coming of age for the festival” not have met if it had not been for both of us having an interest in women composers in early music. “I had a festival back in 1999 with some friends based in north London, a mini-series of music by early women composers, and we invited Deborah to come to take part, and that’s how we met. We kept in touch after that, and we had that shared connection, which we put into the Brighton Early Music Festival. “Both of us were very interested in the fact that there was a good field of early-music women composers that didn’t get as much coverage as they deserved. “We have included
them over the years in the festival, but not in the concentrated way that we are doing now. In a way it is a coming of age for the festival.” For Clare, one of the key events will be The Telling, presenting two performances of Vision, their exploration of the life and music of Hildegard of Bingen, with Niamh Cusack playing the role of Hildegard (St Paul’s Church, Sunday, October 25, 5.30pm and 8.30pm). Blurring the boundaries of drama and concert, the event explores the extraordinary life of the visionary medieval abbess, alongside her haunting and distinctive chant. “In a way she was the best-known of the women composers. Her influence goes beyond the musical sphere. “She was a renaissance women before the renaissance. She was a polymath, not just a composer. She was a herbalist but first and

foremost she was a visionary. She wasahugelyimportant influential figure who corresponded with the popes and the archbishops.” She was driven, but it wasn’t until she was in her 40s that she accepted her visions, as the piece will explain: “She kept
quiet about them. She didn’t think people would believe her, and also to be a visionary in that age was quite dangerous. If the church took your visions the wrong way, you could end up in big trouble!” For more information, visit: www.bremf.org.uk

Disco Pigs - the explosive first play by acclaimed writer Enda Walsh - heads to Brighton Dome on Wednesday, November 18, at 7.30pm. A tumultuous production, it tells the tale of two teenagers raging against small town mediocrity. Born seconds apart in the same hospital, Pig and Runt are soul mates. Partners in crime, they share an appetite for drunkenness, recklessness, adventure and destruction. But on the eve of their 17th birthday it is an appetite for sex that threatens to tear them apart. Disco Pigs won acclaim at the 1997 Edinburgh Festival, winning playwright Enda Walsh both the George Devin Award and Stewart Parker Award and making a name for actor Cillian Murphy. It later transferred to the Bush and was later made into a film also starring Murphy. Since his initial success as a playwright, Enda has gone on to write for the screen. His 2008 biopic, Hunger, told the story of the final days of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands

What’s On FRIDAY Kotu Dance Party
Canadian post-rock juggernauts Godspeed You! Black Emperor are heading to Brighton. Fresh from releasing their fifth studio album Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress, the band is set to perform at the Brighton Dome Concert Hall on Wednesday, October 28, from 8pm. Spokeswoman Emma Robertson said: “Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GY!BE) began in the early ’90s with guitarists Efrim Manuel Menuck and Michael Moya with bassist Mauro Pezzente playing a handful of shows and recording a self-released cassette as a trio before deciding to transform the group into a large band. “Recruiting numerous Montreal musicians
through 1995-1996, GY!BE mounted senserattling wall-of-sound performances, featuring as many as 14 musicians and several 16mm film projectors, before recording their debut vinyl-only Constellation album in 1997.” The group settled into a permanent nine-piece line-up by late 1998. “However, by 2003 and four records, the band announced a hiatus to pursue other musical projects. This lasted until December 2010, when the band returned to curate and perform at All Tomorrow’s Parties followed by extensive international touring.” Tickets cost £23.50 Call 01273 709709 or visit www.brightondome.org

Motors An important message for young drivers Road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist is calling on young people across the UK to take more responsibility for their own safety on the roads. The call follows the release of video footage showing two young men in their speeding car, moments before they both died in a crash. The video, filmed from inside a Renault Clio, shows driver Kyle Careford and his friend Michael Owen speeding along rural roads in Sussex. They crash into a church wall in the village of Rotherfield, where both die instantly. David Williams GEM chief executive said: “It is heart-breaking to watch this video and to see two young lives ended instantly. We commend the courage of the young men’s families for supporting the release of the video, which we hope will challenge anyone who thinks it’s alright to drive fast because they think it’s fun and there are no consequences.
“Figures show that one in five drivers will have a crash within six months of passing their driving test. Inexperience means they may not spot hazards that are developing ahead, while their age means they are also more likely to take risks. “So we’re challenging them first of all to get their attitude right, and to ensure they concentrate 100%, develop good observation and anticipate what hazards could be developing ahead of them. “We would like as many young drivers as possible to heed the clear warnings provided by this video, and to do everything they can to reduce the risks they face and the risks they pose – to their passengers and to other road users as well." The video can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=K39N4PvKQxc Some may find this footage distressing.
GEM has compiled some simple tips to improve safety and reduce risk for young drivers: ■ Develop
a good attitude to driving that puts safety first and means you’re far less likely to take risks.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
by Steve Teale Motoring writer
We’re a conservative lot in this country when it comes to cars. New marques take an age to become established. Lexus is still regarded as new and it’s been here since 1990. Others, like Daewoo, flourish briefly, then vanish. S o y o u c a n s e e w hy SsangYong has its work cut out. The firm briefly succeeded in the UK in the 1990s but then suffered financial trouble before being revived in 2011 by Mahindra & Mahindra, an Indian firm. Now with sales building nicely, you can see why this Koreanbrandisprettypleased with itself. Until recently it produced mainly workhorse 4x4s for the tough end of the market. But it is making a bit of a splash with Tivoli, its first compact SUV, which hopes to cash on our obsession with this form of vehicle. Nissan Juke, Vauxhall Mokka and the relaunched Suzuki Vitara illustrate how important this sector is to the car industry and SsangYong’s l au n c h o f a n eat , we l l equipped and decently priced contender is interesting. FRESH TAKE ON SPREADING THE WORD ON CAR SMOKING BAN
A car dealer network is to start handing out air fresheners marked with information aboutthenewbanonsmoking while children are in the car. TrustFord has partnered with Public Health England to encourage smokers to quit, timing the move to link with the ‘Stoptober’ movement.
The TrustFord network will include one of the new air freshenerswitheverynewand used Ford sold across its sites. Research has shown that even with the windows open, children in the car are exposed to harmful chemicals at more than 100 times the accepted maximum safe level.
With the windows closed and the fan on, these chemicals pass 200 times the safe levels, but smokers may not realise this because over 80 per cent of cigarette smoke is invisible to the human eye. Celia Pronto, marketing and e-commerce director at TrustFord, said: “We are sup-

No fewer than 1,800 changes have been made to produce the New 500, all designed to refine its inimitable style"
New Fiat 500 unveiled
Exactly eight years and more than 1.5 million units since it was launched (on the 50th anniversary of the original car’s launch) the successful and iconic FIAT 500 makes way for its successor: the New FIAT 500. Retaining the unmistakable look that has made it a global bestseller, the New FIAT 500 hasn’t grown in size but instead has grown in maturity with advanced technologies, improved efficiency, even more customisation, and a Centro Stile FIAT refreshed exterior and interior.
No fewer than 1,800 changes have been made to produce the New 500, all designed to refine its inimitable style. The most changes can be found at the front: New FIAT 500 retains the “face” of its predecessors with headlights which are still circular in shape but which adopt innovative poly-elliptical modules
for improved night vision and extra safety. The bonnet retains its distinctive, traditional clamshell form, another nod to its predecessor, while the trapezoidal nose gets more pronounced ribbing and the auxiliary air vent is now fed via a three dimensional grille flanked by chrome brightwork to give the

New FIAT 500 stronger visual presence. New 'empty' light clusters, comprised of ring-shaped structures with body-coloured centres, define the revised look of the rear, with the fog light and reversing light relocated to the edges of the redesigned bumper trim to improve safety by separating
illumination functions. New alloy wheel designs are also introduced: Pop Star and Lounge models have 15inch alloy wheels as standard (£320 option on Pop models) with 16inch wheels available as a £370 option on Pop models and a £130 upgrade option on Pop Star and Lounge models. The colour palette now totals 13 hues, including seven special pastel shades (‘Bossa Nova White’ is standard, the other pastel colours are a £350 option), one tricoat finish (‘Urban White’ at £740) and five metallic colours (a £460 option) including two new colours: Glam Coral and Avantgarde Bordeaux. Black-yellow and blackred variants are also available as part of the 'Second Skin' programme which offers a range of customisation options. There are two ‘Second Skin’ options: the first features a geometric pattern along the beltline only (£140) and is
available on 500 and 500C models, while the larger skin options cover the pillars and roof (£780) - and in some cases the bonnet and tailgate as well - and is available on the hardtop 500 only. Five patterns are offered: 'Ethnic' (geometric pattern); 'Lord' (classic tartan); 'Comics' (pop decoration) in combination with the new two-colour body paintwork; 'Navy' (nautical patterns); and 'Camouflage' (fashionably military). The interior of the FIAT 500 also benefits from enhancements, most noticeably in terms of its dashboard design which now integrates the advanced Uconnect TM infotainment across the range. The unit is not only easier to read and more intuitive to use, it also improves connectivity and functionality with steering wheel remote controls and USB / Aux in ports on all models.

Albion's 12 league games unbeaten will put Lilywhites on their mettle Bradley Stratton @BradStrat After finding the winning formula once again on their return from the international break, Albion will be hoping to make it three victories on the bounce when they host Preston North End. Having gone into last weekend on the back of three draws, there were concerns from fans that the Seagulls would let their form slip and fall away from the chasing promotion pack they have led since the end of August. Those fears were allayed as Chris Hughton’s side came away with all six points. Bobby Zamora showed why the club took a gamble on bringing him back, as the England forward struck late winners against Leeds United and
Bristol City in the past two games. The 34-year-old’s first goal at Elland Road ended a barren run of nearly five seasons without a win in October; his second against the Robins on Tuesday night was met by rapturous scenes in the North Stand. Albion and Zamora will be hoping they can conjure up similar scenes when Simon Grayson’s Lilywhites visit. Four years after their relegation from the second tier of English football, the Lancashire side look like they will be flirting with the drop in their first season back in the Championship. They went on a nine-game winless run prior to a 3-0 victory over a struggling Charlton Athletic in midweek, and will come to the Amex as underdogs. The longer Albion’s unbeaten league run - now

Must. Not. Swear. When the ball hits the net like a… It’s glorious, simply glorious to see Bobby Zamora scoring for Brighton & Hove Albion once again. Not only did he deftly finish a fine pass from Bong to beat the Circus That Just Keeps Giving on Saturday,
he popped up again on Tuesday to blast home against Bristol City. We said on the Roar last week that when (not if) Bobby does score at the Amex, it will raise the roof. Thank Perry that it’s kept in place by a couple of sturdy arches. This week’s guest is the award-winning head of marketing at the Albion, Tom Gorringe.
