Brighton i360 takes shape - as earnings are allocated to fund seafront improvements The pieces of the Brighton i360 were coming together this week, as the construction of the glass pod in France neared completion, and the jacking tower was removed from the 162m structure at the West Pier site. This comes as the Brighton and Hove City Council announced that revenue from the attraction, which is set open next year, will be used to improve the seafront surrounding it. The city council said it intends to to borrow £1.4 million from the government’s Public Works Loans Board initially to fund the plan, and the cash would be repaid over 25 years from the council’s earnings from the i360 which it expects to exceed £1 million a year. Warren Morgan, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “The i360 is now being built and has to succeed so that taxpayers get a return on their investment, namely the loan from the Public Works Loan Board approved before I was council leader which is paying for the project. “I want income that the i360 should generate to
The wait for John Lewis is finally over >> Continued from page 1 and consumer electronics goods, while computer terminals will enable shoppers to browse the wider John Lewis assortment online. If plans are approved, the new shop would provide up to 250 new jobs. But what will become of Boots, Krispy Kreme, and Thomson? On this, John Lewis said: “Since acquiring the building we have maintained an ongoing dialogue with all of our tenants which includes Boots. “We are just at the start
of the process in bringing forward a planning application and working with our tenants will continue to be a priority going forward.”
With the planning application for John Lewis due to be submitted early next year, we may all have to wait until 2017 for the store to open. Finally.

One of Brighton’s finest sons was born: Steve Ovett, the former middle-distance runner was 800m gold medallist at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and set world records for 1,500m and one mile. He still holds the UK record for two miles, which he set in 1978. Educated at Varndean, he showed great promise as a young footballer, but gave up football to concentrate on athletics. At 18 he won the silver medal at 800 metres in the 1974 European Athletics Championships. He raced into the world spotlight in 1977 when, at the inaugural IAAF World Cup in Dusseldorf, he unleashed an astonishing kick with 200 metres to go to leave Olympic 1,500-metre champion John Walker, and the rest of the field, for dead.
be invested back into our seafront infrastructure, including projects like the regeneration of the Madeira Terraces. “The council no longer has money in the bank to pay for infrastructure projects now, so public/ private partnerships, lottery grants, and loans are the only way to bring significant investment into our city and our seafront.” The cash would go towards landscaping around the Brighton i360. To the west of the i360 would be a flexible event space, and to the east, a piazza would focus on heritage and the West Pier. Councillors will be asked to approve the idea in a report to the policy and resources committee on Thursday. If approved, landscaping work would start in February for 20 weeks. At the Brighton i360 site, work continues, and the 60 concrete columns and base for the beach building have also been completed. The focus over the next month will be the completion of the concrete frame by Mackley for the base building at beach level.

Annual report: The state of parking in the city Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy For those of us with a weakness for talking about parking and traffic - when we are not prattling on about property prices, that is - Brighton and Hove City Council’s annual parking report is a goldmine of fascinating facts. Stuffed full of statistics, it runs to 60 pages. Sadly, there is insufficient space here to reflect fully on the rich content of this year’s publication, covering 2014-2015, which is due to be discussed by councillors next week. So I will have to restrict myself to the main bullet points: There has been a slight increase in the number of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) issued - 122,737, compared with 117,772 last year. Numbers remain close to historically-low levels, although the small increase is due largely to the introduction of new parking schemes;
■
Brighton and Hove City Council’s annual parking report will be considered by councillors next week ■ The number of people choosing to pay for their parking in the city by telephone has continued to grow - from 10% of transactions last year to almost 25% this year; more than 130,000 people have signed up for PayByPhone and used the service at least once in the city, with more than 600,000
transactions being made since launch; ■ Surplus income from parking is mostly spent on providing 46,000 free bus passes for the elderly and disabled, as well as a range of other transport and public realm improvement projects; ■ On average, about 15 PCNs are issued daily to
unauthorised vehicles in bus lanes; ■ The following cycle parking facilities were installed: 16 Pedal Cycle Parking Places; 86 cycle stands (172 cycle parking spaces); one community cycle store, (32 cycle parking spaces); 139 individual cycle stands (278 cycle parking spaces);
Compared with 2013, there were fewer fatalities - but an increase in casualties on city streets. In 2014, the number of collisions was 793 (two fatal, 146 serious); in 2013, the number of collisions was 738 (three fatal, 136 serious). There were 987 casualties in 2014 (two fatal, 156 serious) in 2014;
■
in 2013, there were 908 casualties (three fatal, 142 serious); ■ The number of on-street parking spaces is 30,323 compared with 23,333 in 2009-2010; ■ The number of Blue Badges is 12,832 compared with 12,926 in 2013-2014, and 11,978 in 2009-2010; ■ There were 26 prosecutions for Blue Badge fraud between January and the end of August; in addition, there were 53 cases of alleged misuse that resulted in “community resolution”, 26 warning letters to a badge-holder, and 59 warning letters to a driver (or cases that involved no further action); 35 cases awaited completion; ■ The number of resident permits is a record 30,342 - compared with 27,177 in 2013-2014. And that is before the new parking zone proposed for Fiveways (see right). To download the full report, visit: www. brightonandhoveindependent. co.uk

Most households in Fiveways and Surrenden (53.3%) support a proposed new residents’ parking zone in the area. But councillors will be asked next week to approve revised proposals (see right) limiting the zone only to Fiveways, where three in four (75.9%) want restrictions. Roads in Withdean and Patcham have been excluded. Consequently, more than 600 households - in 13 roads where there is majority support for the original proposals – will find they are not now included; people living in roads such as Balfour Road, Bavant Road, Herbert Road, and Harrington Road fear “overspill” parking will add to congestion outside their homes from spring next year.

Latest TV celebrates success of Digital Nation Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Latest TV - the local television channel for Brighton and Hove - is a partner in Digital Nation, a programme showcasing the best of the new local TV network across the United Kingdom. The programme features “heartwarming and compelling stories you may not normally see” - with film-makers from Brighton to Belfast, Nottingham to Norwich, Grimsby to Glasgow. An ongoing collaboration with the BBC, Digital Nation is the first networkwide programme of its kind and is, according to Latest TV, a model for local
TV channels and the BBC working together. Digital Nation is produced by Angi Mariani, business development director for Latest TV, with Tim Bryn Smith and Craig Chettle from Notts TV as executive producers, and Audrey Green Oakes and Linda Bell from the BBC. All 20 local television channels - many in their first year of broadcasting are featured in the weekly show. Ms Mariani said the show highlights the fact that local democracy has had a huge boost as a result of local TV broadcasting local MPs and community leaders; showing local faces on screens across the country, and promoting the work of local content
creators as well as feature films. The average total number of viewers for local television across the UK is reported to be 3.6 million a week.
Campaign
Exchanging Places National road safety campaign Exchanging Places has arrived in Brighton, and aims to reduce the number of accidents involving cyclists, buses, and lorries. It asks: “When you cycle, do you really know if you can be seen by large vehicle drivers? The best way to find out, is to see for yourself.” Cyclists can sit in large vehicles, get the chance to discover blindspots, and talk to the drivers, at Old Steine on Wednesday, between 3pm and 6pm.
Council
Garden waste A garden waste collection scheme is set to be trialled in Hove Park and Withdean, and if successful, it will be rolled out across the city. Under the scheme, which will be discussed by councillors next week, residents would pay £52 a year to have garden waste collected in wheelie bins from their properties every two weeks. Hove Park and Withdean residents would be able to sign up from November with the service starting in March next year.
Politics
Corbyn job
Nancy Platts, the chair of Brighton, Hove and District Labour Party, has been appointed as Jeremy Corbyn’s trade union liaison manager. Ms Platts, who stood as a parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown, but lost by just a few hundred votes, said she is looking forward to the role working with the new Labour party leader.

Will Labour Party members stand up against Warren Morgan? How depressing to read Labour council leader Warren Morgan in the Brighton & Independent last week (page 17, October 2), repeating the same old stony-faced rejection of any joint work or campaigning with the Green Party. For the last few decades, our great city has had a clear two-thirds majority of people voting for left-ofcentre parties. In recent years, that majority has been split in varying proportions between Labour and the Greens. Since the last election, the People’s Republic of Brighton and Hove has emerged, epitomising this independent spirit and calling for progressives to unite. Bur Councillor Morgan will have none of it repeating his tired old attacks on the Green Party - as if the world was stuck in a time warp.
I wonder whether his views really represent those of his Labour colleagues. We know that Cllr Morgan and Hove MP Peter Kyle both backed the Blairite Labour leadership candidate Liz Kendall, who got less than 5% of the party vote. The hundreds of new members who joined Labour locally during Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign are attracted to a new way of doing politics and a clear antiausterity stance. Cllr Morgan offers neither. Local Labour Party chair, Nancy Platts, struck a very different tone at a recent Compass meeting in Brighton. So will the real Labour Party members please stand up and throw off the jaded sectarian politics of Warren Morgan? Will they please work with the People’s Republic and the Green

A Week in the City Lido
Funding row Work has been suspended at Saltdean Lido, after volunteers restoring it and the city council, were embroiled in a row over the funding of an electricity sub-station at the site. Volunteers, who have raised £8m of the £10m needed to restore the Lido, said they need £70,000 for a sub-station - and asked the council for a community loan. Valley Gardens Changing the road layout at Valley Gardens would be “irresponsible” without further studies on how it will impact traffic. The scheme, to improve the roads and green space at the site, has been put on hold for four months, while extra studies are undertaken. Concerns were raised over plans to reduce traffic to one lane in some spots. There has also been significant changes to the local road network since the scheme won funding in 2011. New data will be gathered, and a report prepared for the environment and transport committee in March 2016. Cllr Gill Mitchell, said: “We still want a scheme to go ahead. But we can only do this once we have full knowledge of how transport will be affected. At the moment, we do not know - and it would be irresponsible to proceed until we do.” Event
Colour Run A sea of colour is expected to adorn Brighton seafront, when the annual Color Run arrives on Saturday. Starting at Madeira Drive, the 5k race sees runners splashed with coloured paint as they run, walk, or dance along the track. At the end of the 5k there is one in the morning and one in the afternoon - DJs will entertain those who took part, in a vibrant festival of colour. Council
Litter crackdown “Fly-tipping police” could patrol the streets of Brighton and Hove, if proposals for a new waste enforcement scheme are agreed. These enforcement officers will have the power to issue on-the-spot fines for littering, flytipping, graffiti, and illegal dumping of business waste in communal bins. Warren Morgan, leader of the council said: ”If you dump it we will come after you and fine you. That’s a promise.” The city council said the service would be self-funding through the fines it collects, with no extra cost to taxpayers. If successful, it could be extended to address other issues such as dog fouling. The move is set to be discussed at the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee on October 13, and if agreed, the first fines could be issued from next February.
Shoreham
Officers resign Two Brighton-based police officers have resigned after alleged misconduct at the scene of the Shoreham air crash. The officers, aged 23 and 24, were being investigated in relation to an offensive remark and video. Both officers, who were on probation, have since offered their resignations. Chief Constable Giles York said: “The men, who have less than two years’ service, are clearly remorseful and have acknowledged the impact of what they had done; but when it really mattered the officers failed to show understanding and compassion for the victims and their families. I am confident that they would not go on to become wellconducted officers. “The behaviour of these two officers was inexplicable and caused unnecessary distress to the families of those involved, for which we sincerely apologise.”

Eco homes are opening doors to a more sustainable future Bex Bastable @BexBastable Leading a greener lifestyle by reducing our carbon footprint is something many of us want to do - and it can begin at home. Some of the greenest and most energy-efficient homes and buildings in Brighton and Hove will open their doors to the public; showing why sustainable homes are the future. This is all the more important, after the government shelved its plans to make all new UK homes “zero carbon” by 2016. Proving it can be done, Eco Open Houses will see 12 eco-friendly properties showcased around the city, on two weekends: October 17-18 and October 24-25. One of those buildings is
a new home in Grantham Road, which is a zerocarbon buidling, featuring an air source heater pump, rainwater harvesting, and underfloor heating. The award-winning Earthship Brighton community centre, which is made out of old car tyres rammed with earth, is also on show. The impressive building generates its own solar energy, and treats sewage on site. The internationally renowned Waste House at Brighton University is part of the event, and the building is made entirely of waste - including old denim and thousands of toothbrushes. Five retrofitted and four new-build homes will open their doors, providing people with inspiration on sustainable and ecofriendly house building. Eco homes typically have
Hopes for the future of city’s iconic Hippodrome Jade McLean @jademelissa75 Actor Nigel Nevinson is the latest campaigner to raise money for Brighton’s troubled Hippodrome. His talk at the Komedia last Sunday reflected on the golden years of theatre, and he spoke about his late mother Nancy, whose acting career spanned eight decades. Mr Nevinson, said: “I didn’t even know about the Hippodrome. But when the campaign started, the more I found out about it, the more I thought it could be a fantastic asset for Brighton in the future.” The Hippodrome opened in 1897 as the Real Ice-Skating Rink, later becoming a circus venue, a theatre, and finally a Mecca bingo hall before closing its doors in 2007. Since then developers have applied to convert the building into an eight-screen cinema complex and restaurant. In October 2013 campaign group Our Brighton Hippodrome (OBH) was formed, setting out to raise public awareness of the plans and to campaign for the theatre’s restoration. Mr Nevinson added: “Brighton already has cinemas and they’re never full. I think more and more people prefer to get movies on Netflix and watch them at home. “Some people think it’s

just a nostalgia thing and it should be turned into flats and offices, but I think it has an incredible history Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy - many famous people performed there. But it’s not just about that. If the theatre could be renovated, it’ll be the only theatre in Brighton that is big enough to hold West End shows and big concerts.” According to the OBH website, it is working with its stakeholder group partners, Brighton and Hove City Council, The Theatres Trust, Historic England, The Frank Matcham Society, and AMG to make their dream of saving the theatre a reality. With a big funding push expected next year, OBH hopes to raise enough to carry out the first phase of restoration - costing around £8 million. ‘The Good Divorce’
Out of sight, not out of mind
Jo provides a free meeting to discuss which dispute resolution option is best Open Saturdays and evenings to be flexible around your job ■ Collaborative Law ■ Mediation ■ Negotiated Settlements
Jo will be delighted to discuss (free of charge and confidentially) how she can assist you and your family.
This week waiting in a long queue at my local supermarket I was aware that whilst the tourists may have left Brighton the students were back in full force. There was a buzz about the aisles as young people loaded up their trolleys, clearly enjoying their new independence. This time of year is exciting and full of possibilities if you are 18; you have escaped your parents and all the tensions of being a grown up child in the family home. But every autumn when the children have left home to go to University I will receive a flood of enquiries. Couples who have been waiting until the children were more independent to address the issues in their relationship. As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator the couples seeking my advice want the best divorce possible, they want to be respectful to each other. Rather than fighting it out most want to end their relationship with dignity and minimise the pain it will cause any children involved. They have waited until this point precisely because they think in doing so older children won’t be affected. Unfortunately they are wrong – research shows that older children are as affected by divorce as younger children just differently.

If you are a young adult when your parents split up, you’re more likely to be expected to take it in your stride, after all you have your own life now and don’t have to be part of the process.
I can help you bypass the truly awful adversarial process of the courts at the time of the breakup JO O’SULLIVAN
I am also a Family Mediator and work closely with Family Consultants and those offering parenting courses. As such I witness that divorce has the ‘potential’ to be just as damaging as when you’re a child. Older children will question their childhood memories. Parents become desperate to keep in touch and often start
confiding in an older child; leaning on them in a way that they wouldn’t have done when the child was younger. This can be a huge burden to bear. They may be hundreds of miles away seemingly enjoying student life but many say they have a niggling guilt to contend with; they question whether their parents only stayed together all those years because of them. Research also shows that when parents confide in older children there is an element of role reversal that can be hard to adapt to. It’s a confusing time for everyone where roles become more blurred. Some older children will be angry that their parents didn’t split up sooner, when they were younger. The divorce hasn’t come as a shock. They feel angry having born
the brunt of problems in their parent’s relationship only for the relationship to end once they leave home. But there are positives – in reaching out parents and children can become closer again. Older children have relationships of their own so can better empathise. Many will consciously work harder at their own relationships and learn from parents’ mistakes. Ultimately, children of all ages need to be given permission to grieve the loss of their family, including time to work through their feelings. Mediation, parenting advice and counselling can all help smooth this transition; as can sympathetic friends or family members. While life will never be the same, the good news is that with the right support and advice it does get better.

“Vocal Fusion” is a new male-voice Acapella Chorus, currently being set up by Steyning musician, Zoe Peate, - who already successfully directs a number of choruses in the area, - together with David Ellwood - Lead, Tam Large - Tenor and John Higgins – Bass. This new Chorus builds on Zoe’s experience directing The Sussex Harmonisers over that last 4 years, and “Vocal Fusion” aims to perform a repertoire of American song, swing, jazz & secular music to a high musical standard. “We are looking for good male-voice singers” says Zoe - who can work, have fun, and together create great harmonies. We will provide recordings for each voice part - which really helps singers to learn their notes - so the ability to read music is far less important than having a good voice.” Rehearsals take place every Wednesday evening in Steyning, starting on October 21st 2015 at 7.45pm. Industrial centre to be built at Whitehawk for City College construction students A £9 million facility for trainee carpenters, builders, electricians, and plumbers, will be built at City College Brighton and Hove’s campus in Whitehawk. The college has confirmed details of a new Construction and Trades Centre at its East Campus on Wilson Avenue, designed to be a leading educational and training hub for Brighton and Hove’s next generation of construction workers. The centre has been funded by the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and will enable students in the different trades to work together and follow each other through the construction process, mirroring real site conditions. Sussex-based HNW
Architects has designed the centre, leading construction firm Osborne will be building it and the works will be projectmanaged by Sussex construction and property consultancy practice NorthGates. Demolition of old structures on the site commences in November and construction work will begin in January 2016. The centre is scheduled to be completed by March 2017. Nick Juba, City College’s CEO, said: “We’re delighted to be able to build such a vital new educational facility, something which the city can be proud of. We’re very grateful for the support we’ve received from the Coast to Capital LEP and Brighton and Hove City Council to take this project forward. It will provide facilities in which

the carpenters, builders, electricians and plumbers of the future can learn their skills in realistic working environments. It’s crucial that the college caters for the needs of the young people and adults of our dynamic city, enabling them to gain the vocational skills that employers expect. The new centre is central to delivering that ambition. “There is no doubt that there are challenges facing the further education sector right now and so it is even more important that we work closely with our local community, employers, and other organisations to ensure there is strong and sustained partnership working, demonstrating the value and impact that our students can make to the local economy and beyond.”
Construction projects in Brighton and Hove include Royal Sussex Hospital (£500m), Brighton Marina (£250m), Circus Street (£100m), and Brighton i360 (£46m). In the southeast region generally, construction sector growth over the next five years is estimated to deliver more than 2,500 new jobs a year, according to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Mr Juba said: “The college has a vital and positive contribution to make to the economic development of the city, building on its success as one of the country’s top five cities for private sector job creation. We work very closely with industry and the new centre will enable us to create even stronger industry links in the future.”
A voice for everyone A new platform for charities and ethical organisations in the southeast has launched - in the form of an online news service “Giving Times”. It’s no secret that charities, public sector groups, and grassroots organisations have been hit hard financially over the last few years. But in a report published last week the charity sector was informed that despite having the greatest potential for customer engagement it remains “digitally stagnant”. So, this month, Brightonbased PR Company SEA PR, launched Giving Times, a digital platform that will give editorial space and a new audience to those organisations who wouldn’t normally have access to it. Tracey Allen, director of SEA PR and founder of Giving Times, said, “It’s time to start using digital technology and the media to engage with a changing audience, new generations of donors and supporters with very different behaviours and attitudes. “Driving this initiative forward will not only support communication strategies for the sector regionally, but it will also
help deliver analytics, audience profiles and user habits, as well as introducing a new audience, possibly a younger audience to charity brands, increasing customers and funding. People can’t give to what they’re not aware of.” The news will be online, with bite-size weekly updates sent out for free to subscribers, and the use of Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook will be integral. The platform will also provide contacts for media workshops, bespoke training, and campaign support to third sector organisations keen to get more out of the media and business sectors. Geoffrey Bowden, chairman of Kemptown Carnival Association, said: “Giving Times is a fantastic new resource for everyone working in and for charities and the third sector. I am sure that we will soon wonder how we ever did without this great new platform.” The Brighton & Hove Independent is a media partner of Giving Times. Creations and collaborations: Brighton designer expresses herself through nature Flowers, clouds, and the sea, Brighton interior designer Lee Fieldman tells us where she gets her ideas for her unique wallpaper designs, and why Brighton is the perfect place to spark her creativity.
Charlotte Pearson @Charlotte_may In what way do you choose to express yourself? Through the clothes you wear, how you style your hair or maybe even the bands you listen to? Perhaps, but for Brighton based Lee Fieldman she feels that people do it in another way too. “I love wallpaper,” she says.“People can use clothes to express themselves but I think you can do the same with wallpaper. “Walking into a room and seeing a feature wall is just stunning. But then wallpaper just seems to speak to me, I could sit for hours online just looking at different designs.” Lee originally completed a degree in textile design where she found she had a passion for home furnishings. “After I graduated I got an internship in Milan for a wallpaper company,” she explains. “It involved getting briefs, and then designing and manufacturing wallpaper for other companies. “It was good but could
sometimes be very restrictive.” While working in Italy Lee gained a lot of experience and saw how the business worked. “It got to the point when I just wanted to do my own collections and create my own brand so I decided to leave, which has given me the chance to discover my own style,” reveals Lee. “However, I did start discovering this a little bit in Milan. “You could always tell the designs I had worked on for clients as my style was very bohemian, colourful and floral, but I was still working to a brief so creating what the client wanted.” With designs featuring clouds and flowers it is obvious where Lee draws inspiration. “Nature,” she replies. “The tranquillity of the sea, branches, grass, flowers, everything really. “I have hard drives with thousands of pictures saved on them and whenever I go out for walks I always take my camera with me.” Working on a computer, Lee sometimes paints her backgrounds before adding detail in. “I feel more comfortable
working digitally,” she explains. “I think you just get used to working in a particular way. “The roses I painted and then enhanced on a computer, painting does scare me sometimes but only because I am so used to a computer.” Still fairly new in the business, Lee is currently working through Tektura Wallcoverings, which gives her the opportunity to work under her own name while building up the brand. This also means she is able to work with other people. “I enjoy collaborating with people,” she reveals. “My fiancé Roi Klifi makes wooden furniture at Robinson House Studio. “I am working with him creating a print featuring wood which will be used on his furniture, it isn’t something I have done before as I just work in wallpaper but it has been really interesting.” And that is just one of many concepts she is working on. “I am working from project to project at the moment so I am really busy,” she smiles.“There is a Brighton artist called Brady Allen who does beautiful

watercolour paintings. “We are looking to do something for spring/ summer as there is a trade show in New York which we are aiming for. I am also currently working with a Hong Kong company on travel accessories and producing geometric prints for them, which is looking like it will be picked up by a high street chain.” Although Lee is keeping herself busy there is one goal set firmly in her mind. “I would love to be stocked in Liberty,” she reveals. “Or somewhere like that. “Once I have finished the projects I am working on I am going to look at expanding my brand.” Lee reveals that she calls Israel home, where her

Israeli mother and Scottish father now live. “It is so beautiful with the Mediterranean sea and the deserts, it is very different in Brighton,” she adds, before explaining she had not visited Brighton before deciding to make it her new home. “I wanted somewhere close to London but I’m not really a city girl,” explains Lee. “I love nature and living in Brighton means I can go and walk my dog on the beach, then do some work and have some peace and quiet.” The saying might be “as exciting as watching paint dry” but after talking to Lee the thought of watching wallpaper is quite appealing.

Celebrating the unique personalities of our piers A new Brighton exhibition is taking a look at our piers. Pierdom: Photographs of Britain’s piers by Simon Roberts runs at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery until February 21 next year. Jo Nightingale, museum PR officer said: “For two centuries Britain’s piers have traced our relationship with the seaside, and our economic and social history. “Photographer Simon Roberts, who lives in Brighton, has undertaken a three-year quest to document all of Britain’s remaining pleasure piers, using a large format 4 x 5” field camera. “The series has been made into an acclaimed photobook, Pierdom, and enjoyed success in London commercial gallery, Flowers. Several of the pier photographs have been exhibited in their respective hometowns but this will be the first time they have been brought together in one public exhibition.” Simon said: “I don’t think anything sums up British national identity more powerfully than the pleasure pier. A century ago our coastline had more than a hundred, offering people a tantalising taste of the sea without having

to get wet, but today fewer than half of them are still standing. “With Pierdom I wanted to celebrate the personality, architecture and history of each remaining structure – as well as some of the spaces where the piers can no longer be seen.” The exhibition will include striking, evocative images of nearby piers in Worthing, Eastbourne, Hastings, Southsea (Portsmouth), Southampton, Bournemouth and Bognor as well as Brighton’s own piers. Simon Roberts, born in 1974, is a British photographer based in Brighton. Often employing expansive landscape photographs, his approach is to create wide-ranging surveys of our time, which communicate on social, economic and political
issues. His work has been exhibited widely, with solo shows at the National Media Museum, Bradford, Museum and Multimedia Art Museum Moscow; and resides in major public and private collections including the George Eastman House, Deutsche Börse Art Collection and Wilson Centre for Photography. Entry to the exhibition is free with museum admission. Residents of nearby towns whose piers are featured in the exhibition - Worthing, Eastbourne, Hastings and Bognor Regis - can enjoy two-for-one entry to Brighton Museum and Art Gallery during the Pierdom exhibition with proof of residence. We have been building up the fanbase by giving out free CDs at shows, and we didn’t think in this internet age we could really sell anything unless we had an audience willing to buy it! “But now we are just happy to get something out there. We just did it for the fun of it, and then we felt like we wanted to cobble this together and release something to sum up our year.” Kicking off the year by supporting The Kooks throughout Germany, the band headed back to home
nothing was happening, and then we started coming together and then gave it a name. “People think we are referring to a mystical tribe of female fighters, but really for us it is more to do with the book Swallows and Amazons. We were thinking of a name, and we thought of, like, a billion names, but nothing felt right and nothing stuck. I was looking through my books, and I was thinking of Swallows and Amazons.” The name Swallows was already taken, and besides it didn’t really convey what Matt was looking for. The Amazons was a much better fit as to what they were all about. “Swallows and We wanted to Amazons was an important be like a tribe. book. It ties in. I It was a cool concept” think a lot of pop culture and tribes and different gig together: “We had been genres have been diluted. in bands previously, and Everything is the same. it was the classic how- Going back to mods and everyone-comes-together rockers, there was a between story. Everyone was in differentiation different groups and the two, and there was shores with shows booked in nationwide. A long run of regional dates took the band into the summer where they have been performing at a string of festivals, including Live at Leeds, Dot to Dot, and Barn on the Farm. From that emerged the recording. “The EP just happened like that, but we are happy with the sentiment and the messages of the songs. We are really pleased with that. It just feels really real, not contrived in any way. There was no pressure about getting it out. It was just that the songs were ready.” In September, the band marked the first anniversary of their first
Conventional ballet gets an artful and comic twist thanks to Trocks An all-male ballet company dressed as women will return at the Brighton Dome this November. Award-winning comedy dance troupe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo will grace the Concert Hall stage on Tuesday, November 3,andWednesday,November 4, with their playful parody on classical ballet. ‘The Trocks’, as they are affectionately known, specialise in putting their up to size 12 pointe shoes to re-modelling classical and modern favourites with ready wit and precision. Dressed in full make-up and traditional ballerina costume, the male dancers’ artful and comic twist on conventional ballet has won them critical acclaim. Among the broadshouldered and hairychested ballerinas are dancers Ida Nevasayneva, Olga Supphozova and Lariska Dumbchenko. As artistic director the troupe have Tory Dobrin, who first joined the group as a dancer in 1980. Founded 41 years ago, the now world-renowned company has grown from its humble beginnings

in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts to popular international tours. Notable performances included an appearance on the 1977 TV show Where Do We Go From Here and the 80th anniversary Royal Variety Performance in 2008. To date, the Trocks have performed in 610 cities in 40 countries, including extensive tours in Europe and Japan this year. Company dancers currently hail from Australia, Cuba, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the USA. The Trocks’ 14th visit to the UK is the first time that their fan-flicking, castanet-clicking version of the Spanish tale ‘Don Quixote’ comes to the British stage.
Other dances in the line up are Swan Lake Act II: Le Lac Des Cygnes, with choreography after LevIvanovich Ivanov, and an Extract from Esmeralda after Marius Petipa. Killer hips and attitude are also on the cards in the MerceCunningham inspired Patterns in Space; Go for Barocco, a satire on Balanchine’s choreography. The show is presented by Brighton Dome and Dance Consortium. Performances will begin at 7.30pm both nights. Tickets cost £12.50, £18.50, £22.50 and £27.50 and are available from brightondome.org. Schools can get 20% off the ticket price.

punk, which was different, but it just doesn’t feel that that happens anymore. “We are a rock ‘n’ roll band. We are 21-year-olds or younger, and we want to be in a gang, so The Amazons sounded good. We wanted to be like a tribe. It was a cool concept. We want to be confronting the world, that kind of vibe. Rock ’n’ roll has lost its guts. We want to
get them back. Rock ’n’ roll not so much in terms of ’50s music, more in terms of the lifestyle and the attitude and the antiestablishment vibe. We would be more like your alternative band, Nirvana. It has got that energy, but our music is also anthemic, a bit like Springsteen and so on, people like Arcade Fire. They are a fantastic band. They do big indie
anthemic stuff!” As Matt says, it’s important the band write songs that fans can relate to: “It’s a tribute to the nights we used to spend together with our friends before everyone left Reading for different reasons. You think that time will last forever or at least want it to.” The gig starts at 7pm. Admission is £5.

What’s On FRIDAY The Miser
Choreographer and former Brighton Festival guest director Hofesh Shechter presents the Barbarians Trilogy in Brighton for the first time. The show takes place at Brighton Dome Concert Hall on Tuesday, October 20, at 8pm. Emma Robertson, PR officer said: “This brand-new evening of work features the worldclass dancers of his internationally-celebrated company. “The infinitelyunpredictable Shechter presents a sparse world for three wildly-different takes on intimacy, passion and the banality of love. “Revealing his choreography at its most elegant and intimate, the
highly-acclaimed and perturbing Barbarians In Love opens the evening. Trembling with emotion residing within order, an ecclesiastic baroque score by composer François Couperin accompanies a truly-contemporary confession. “What follows, as two more new works unfold, is a volatile explosion of dubstep grooves for an almost urban choreography and a quirky duet, which together complete an evening showcasing the singular and wry voice of their creator and the versatility and talent of his individual dancers.” Tickets on 01273 709709 or brightondome.org.

Motors JCB Group strikes deal to take over ŠKODA franchise One of Kent and Sussex’s largest motor groups has completed a deal which will see it take over a ŠKODA franchise in Worthing, covering Brighton and Hove. The JCB Group is spreading its operation across the southeast with the takeover of the franchise of West Sussex Motors from the Birchwood Group, expanding its growing portfolio of Volkswagen Automotive Group (VAG) sites. Jonathan Bischoff, managing director, said: “I’m very much centred on developing a regional dealership group which is customer-focused and financially robust. 18 months ago we announced the acquisition of the Eurovans Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles franchises in Brighton, Crawley, and Eastbourne which increased our influence and reach in the automotive world. “Since JCB Group’s
The JCB Group is set to take over a ŠKODA franchise that covers Brighton and Hove
inception, we’ve proven that there’s a healthy market for good oldfashioned service in supporting motorists, where people are looked after. "Customers are also concentrating their purchases around vehicles
which are reliable and offer value-for-money. With this in mind, our strategy of expansion is very much focused around VAG brands. “The opportunity to take on the ŠKODA franchise was simply too good to miss, after all it has a deserved
reputation for value-formoney; products built to the highest standards, engineering innovation and outstanding customer service, very much fitting in with our own values.” Mr Bischoff set up the JCB Group 17 years ago, then aged 28, while he
was working for another dealership. He wrote to Volkswagen, explaining that he only wanted to work for them and was desperate to be given the opportunity to run a dealership. To his delight (and surprise) Volkswagen replied, offering to be the
guarantor behind this new business venture. Fast forward 20 years, Jonathan’s team have sold in excess of 75,000 vehicles and the business has grown to include other marques including SEAT, Honda and Fiat, plus Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VW CV). The ŠKODA franchise will now be part of a family run group which prides itself on being the UKs largest commercial vehicles dealer, the southeast’s number one Volkswagen dealer (according to VW One Business Awards for 2015) and which also supplies parts to the trade industry. Mr Bischoff added: “We are utilising our extensive resources and expertise to ensure that there is a smooth transition for all involved. We are delighted to welcome ŠKODA to the JCB Group family.” JCB Group now employs over 300 staff throughout Kent and Sussex.

Pros - and cons - to take from Albion’s run of draws Bradley Stratton @BradStrat With clubs in the top two divisions taking a breather for the latest international break, it feels like the right time to reflect on how Albion have performed in recent games. Altogether it’s hard to knock Chris Hughton’s side too much, despite having drawn their last three games. Ten games into the league season and the Seagulls are still unbeaten at the top of the Championship table, with a two-point gap over secondplaced Middlesbrough. Albion also showed in the 1-1 draw against Cardiff that they have the mentality to respond to conceding first, having gone behind for the first time this season within the first five minutes at the Amex. When, however, you analyse the trio of stalemates, a case can be
The Albion Roar Alan Wares @albionroar

made that the gap at the top of the table could and should be greater. Against Wolves we had the advantage of playing against 10 men for 40 minutes, with Tomer Hemed also missing a chance to score from the penalty spot; at Bolton, Albion would have held on for all three points
had it not been for the controversial sending off of Jamie Murphy, forcing them to go on the defensive in the closing stages; and, at home to Cardiff, Albion had enough chances to pick up the win. While they have had a great start to the season, if the squad want to be in this sort of position come May,
they cannot afford to miss too many opportunities to collect all three points. What will make the difference between the sides at the top and bottom of the division is making the most of small margins and chances to win games. Albion must do this at Leeds United on October 17.
Perspective. Brighton’s fans were, for the most part, happy with the performance against Cardiff City - and with every justification. It was a match against one of the division’s more fancied sides and was basically one-way traffic Cardiff City fans were delighted they’d got through
the mauling relatively unscathed and emerged with a point. So everyone was happy. Except possibly the (finally) brilliant Solly March, the target of some petulant donkeys who couldn’t handle his pace, approach, and skill. We’ve been waiting a while for Solly to show his true spirit on the pitch. Now he has obliged, we all hope for a lot more. Please.

event like this is important in encouraging positive discussions about mental health and breaking down barriers and stigma often associated with it.” Ivan Mainprize, vicepresident of American Express, said: “We are committed to promoting mental wellbeing across the company and to encouraging a culture of openness and acceptance about mental health conditions. “Last year, we signed an organisational pledge to the Time to Change campaign, to lend our voice to encourage more organisations to join the public discussion about mental wellbeing. "We are proud to be involved in this year’s event and to be helping AITC raise awareness of this important issue.”
