n Community has pledged £100,000 for craft-beer pub in The Lanes n Founders say it could open by the summer n The idea was in response to wide-spread opposition to Burger King proposal A craft-beer pub could open at the seafront entrance to The Lanes as soon as the summer, after more than 300 people invested £100,000 into the project. The Bison Arms, was pitched as “a pub for locals, by locals”, as an alternative to Burger King - which had set its sights on the old Mariner pub. But an application by a franchisee for the fast-food chain was turned down and this week, The Bison

Arms raised the funds it needed to take its own plans forward. The crowdfunding campaign by Bison Beer and the Bottom’s Rest pub hit its target one week before the deadline. Jack Cregan, coowner of Bison Beer, said: “The people of Brighton got behind it. I don’t think there is anywhere else in the country where this would happen.” See page 3

An amazing achievement: The Bison Arms hits £100k Bex Bastable @BexBastable A crowdfunding appeal to raise £100,000 to transform the old Mariner pub intoThe Bison Arms, sensationally reached its target one week before the deadline. In a vote of confidence from the local community, more than 300 people have invested in the pub - set to specialise in craft beers and locally sourced food. Jack Cregan, of Bison Beer, said: “The overwhelming feeling is that we’re proud of everybody who has invested. “It is a real example of how communities can come together and have a say in what is in the town. The people of Brighton got behind it. I don’t think there is anywhere else in the country where this would happen. It is an amazing achievement. We feel very grateful to everybody who has invested and helped spread the word.”

On Tuesday morning, investment for the pub was just under £80,000, but gathered momentum throughout the day. The most substantial pledge came on Tuesday afternoon, when an anonymous donor pledged almost £10,000, which gave it the final push it needed to reach the £100,000. Investors’ rewards go from “pour your own pint and a hug”, all the way up to brewing your own beer, and having your name on a founders plaque. The idea was sparked by Mr Cregan and Nick Vardy, co-owners of Bison Beer, and Simon Duddington of the Bottom’s Rest pub - after a bid by Burger King to take on the East Street site. More than 10,000 people signed a petition opposing the fast-food chain’s bid to open in The Lanes. But just before Christmas, the application by Burger King franchisee Daryl Stutchbury wa s t u r n e d d ow n by planning officers.

Nick Vardy, Simon Duddington, and Jack Cregan in the old Mariner pub building The Bison Arms, however, has received the backing of the community, and now the £100,000 has been raised to refurbish the building, it could be on track to open in just a few months. Mr Cregan said he was set to formalise an agreement for The Bison Arms to take on the building yesterday ( Th u r s d ay ) , bu t t h at everything else is set in place

Average council tax bill set to increase by £60 from April Taxpayers living in an “average” Band D home in Brighton and Hove can expect a £60 council tax rise this year. Brighton and Hove City Council is looking at increasing its share of the bill by 3.99 per cent. That’s £53.35 extra for a Band D property in the city. This means a Band D household would pay £1,392.03 for city council services. Initial budget proposals outlined a 1.99 per cent r i s e , b u t t h e L a b o u radministration said it would take up the government’s offer of an additional two per cent rise, ring-fenced for adult social care.

Warren Morgan, leader of the council, said the local authority had “no choice” but to raise council tax, in the face of cuts to funding from government. The city council is set to agree its precept at Budget Council next month. Sussex Police has just agreed a 3.4 per cent rise, which will mean £5 extra a year for a Band D property. So an average household would pay £148.91 a year for the police. Katy Bourne, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, said the extra income would be put towards digital forensics, and protecting vulnerable people from sexual and

domestic abuse. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is set to increase its share by 1.94 per cent - an extra £1.65 for an average household, taking its share of an average bill to £86.72.The fire authority will meet in February to agree its proposed 1.94 per cent rise. If proposals are approved by the relevant authorities, the total council tax bill for a Band D property in Brighton and Hove will be £1,627.66 in 2016/17 - up from £1,567.66 this year. Extra charges apply to properties in: Rottingdean Parish, Hanover Crescent, Marine Square and Royal Crescent.

to start the ball rolling. Several local businesses have got on board with the project, including Yelo Architects, the 64 degrees restaurant, and a host of local designers. Their mission statement is to “revive 80 East Street, Brighton, as a pub specialising in craft beer, local beer, championing the best of what’s local including

trades, artists, illustrators, writers and chefs to help us create this communitybased business.” Mr Cregan said: “We are going to deliver on everything we promised.” With planning in place, Mr Cregan said The Bison Arms could open as early as this summer. New finance boss for city Brighton and Hove City Council has named its new executive director finance and resources as David Kuenssberg. Mr Kuenssberg, 44, of Hove, replaces interim finance director Rachel Musson, who was paid £999-a-day to fill the post. The new finance chief, who is expected to earn up to £115,000 a year, joins the council from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). He has more than 20 years’ experience in financial management, having worked at English Heritage and PwC.

Homeless petition Members of Love Activists Brighton were set to hand a petition to the council last night (Thursday), urging it to find solutions to end homelessness in the city. The petition listed seven solutions, including opening emergency shelters every night, to offer housing to all homeless people, and to make squatting in empty buildings safe. It was signed by 3,028 people.

Winning bid revealed for King Alfred Centre Bex Bastable @BexBastable I t ’ s b e e n a l o n g wa i t , shrouded in secrecy, but f i n a l l y, t h e p r e f e r r e d developer ofThe King Alfred Leisure Centre has been revealed. Brighton and Hove City Council has picked Hove businessman Rob Starr, alongside Crest Nicholson, t o r e d eve l o p t h e l o n g neglected site. The project will cost £400 million, with a new and improved £40 million sports centre, and four tower blocks - the highest standing at 18 storeys - made up of 560 flats.Twenty per cent would be affordable. A spokesperson for Crest Nicholson and the Starr Trust said: “We are delighted to have been selected by Brighton and Hove City Council as the successful bidder to deliver the King Alfred Development in Hove. We look forward to working closely with the council

and the local community to bring our proposals to life. This is a very exciting development, which will offer the local community a brand new leisure centre alongside much needed new apartments.” The decision was announced following last Th u r s d ay ’ s p o l i cy a n d resources committee. It follows a year-long “competitive dialogue” between two bidders and council officers, overseen by councillors from all parties, on the King Alfred Project Board. Bouygues, a French firm, was the other bidder. The n ew c e n t re wil l include three swimming pools; a 25m eight-lane competition pool, a smaller teaching pool, plus a leisure pool. However, despite a petition from residents, there will be no 50m pool. The sports hall would have space for eight badminton courts compared to five in the current centre. Therewillbea120-station gym, plus 15 spinning bikes.

An aerial view of the King Alfred Leisure Centre site Also included are a crèche, gymnastics centre, threerink indoor bowls, dedicated martial arts dojo, quiet studio, sauna and a café. The council will put £8 million towards the sports facility, paid for by the “much-improved financial performance” of the new centre. The remainder of the £40 million cost will be paid for by the development of the 560 homes. The decision made by the

council is subject to a 10-day standstill period, should the losing bidder want to appeal, so more detailed plans will not be released until next week. Public consultation will take place as part of the planning process, covering aspects such as size and appearance. The plans will then go through the planning process in the normal way, and if successful, the development should be complete by 2020.

Refresh Your Tired Kitchen!

Secrecy shows ‘contempt for democracy’ The secrecy around the redevelopment of the new King Alfred Leisure Centre has been criticised by city’s Liberal Democrats. M i c h a e l Wi l b u r, chair of Brighton and Hove Lib Dems, said: “It is outrageous that councillors from the Labour, Conservative and Green parties have agreed to a conspiracy of silence. The lack of transparency in allowing local residents to evaluate the merits of the competing bids is quite insulting. This does not happen with major schemes in other cities and shows that the local councillors have a contempt for democracy. “We are keen to see redevelopment at King Alfred but Hove residents must have the chance to air their views. It is time for the council to come clean and make the details of the bids known immediately. “Without transparency we have no way of evaluating whether this development helps solve

Michael Wilbur, chair of Brighton and Hove Lib Dems Brighton’s housing crisis.” After taking the decision to discuss the bids behind closed doors at policy and resources, the council said it had concerns that the losing bidder might sue if details of the two bids were released before the meeting.Abraham GhebreGhiorghis, head of legal and democratic services, said: “The view taken was that publishing the detailed information ahead of the meeting would increase the risk of legal challenge.”

70-home plan for Astoria turned down Bex Bastable @BexBastable City planners rejected proposals for “sub-standard” homes at the derelict Astoria theatre this week. The proposals by ThreeSixty Developments were for 70 homes at the Gloucester Place site, which has stood empty for a more than a decade. The committee refused the application following advice from council officer Adrian Smith, who said: “A significant number of units would suffer from poor quality outlook, privacy and natural light levels.” Approval had already been granted for demolition of the building - which was a cinema and then a bingo hall - but planners weren’t convinced the new proposals were up to scratch. Simon Bareham from Lewis Planning spoke of behalf of ThreeSixty, and told the planning

committee that the firm was “predominately a student housing developers”, but the Astoria would have been its second venture into homes for the private rented sector. He said the proposal was for an “interactive community-focused environment”, with a TV room, landscaped courtyard, a bookable dining room and kitchen for entertaining, bookable guest room, gym, cycles spaces and concierge service. He also said the firm would pledge £2.4 million to the council towards affordable housing. He said: “This really is an exciting opportunity for members to make a decision on a new type of specialist, high amenity, purpose built rental accommodation for its residents. We think this product is needed in the market.” But Cllr Julie Cattell, chair of the planning committee, said: “The quality of the accommodation is very poor. If this is the only choice people have, it’s a

very poor choice. We knocked stuff like this down, because it used to be considered substandard.” Cllr Adrian Morris raised concerns that rental costs in the area are “unbelievably high”,and the development would not provide suitable homes for young families. The approval for the building to be demolished was granted in 2013, and still stands. But ThreeSixty c o u l d c o m e b a ck w i t h a new proposal for the site - perhaps student accommodation.

Lowest satisfaction rating for Brighton train services

Southern and Thameslink trains run to and from Brighton Railway Station Bex Bastable @BexBastable Services running from Brighton station were once again at the bottom of the pile in this year’s National Rail Passenger Survey. Transport Focus’s rail statistics were released on Wednesday, and show commuters out of Brighton and Hove endure the worst service in the UK in terms of passenger satisfaction. O n ly 7 8 p e r c e n t o f Southern passengers were satisfied with the service - although that’s up one per cent on last year - and Thameslink was given a 73 per cent, the worst in the UK. Govia Thameslink runs both franchises. Peter Kyle, MP for Hove, said: “These statistics bear out what I’ve heard from constituents time and time again since I was elected last May - the service simply isn’t good enough right

now with continued delays causing real disruption to commuters lives. As I said to Govia Thameslink Railway at the Rail Summit organised by the Department forTransport last week, they need to get a grip now and sort out these performance issues to win back the trust of the public who have been let down by so many broken promises in the past.” A spokesperson for Thameslink said: “We know punctuality was particularly pooratthetimeofthissurvey, making life difficult for our passengers. Increased passenger demand and essential improvement work at London Bridge has made any problems that do occur on the Brighton Main Line and Thameslink route up to four times more difficult to recover from, as there is simply less room for the huge number of trains we run every day. However, when this work is

finished, our services will be transformed for passengers with greater connectivity and more capacity to, from and through the heart of London.” A statement from Southern, said: “While it is encouraging that we scored better overall this year over last, we are still a long way off where we would like to be.Clearly poor performance links heavily with overall satisfaction, but we are working closely with Network Rail on a programme of improvements. From the end of February Gatwick Express customers will see the introduction of a new Gatwick Express train fleet with wider doors for easier boarding/alighting, power sockets and on-train wi-fi. From the summer onwards, we will be introducing a raft of other improvements which will be of huge benefit to passengers.”

Trains to become ‘mugger’s paradise’ if conductor cuts go ahead, warns union Railway union RMT has issued a stark warning, after proposals to remove all guards and conductors from its trains. Mick Cash, general s e c r e t a r y o f t h e R M T, has said RMT the union is “seriously concerned” over proposals by Govia Thameslink Railways Ltd (GTR) to introduce driveronly operation on nearly all services in Sussex. Mr Cash said: “Not only will this see the loss of up to 400 decent rail jobs, if enacted, these proposals will be detrimental for both passenger service and safety and create a mugger’s paradise. The driver is responsible for the safe operation of the train and the guard/conductor for the

protection of the passengers. Guard/conductors must be fully-trained in operational safety and route knowledge, including being able to secure the doors safely, protecting the train and acting in emergencies such as derailments or fire. “Guard/conductors also look out for and report hazards on or near the line and are trained to deal with problems on the track. The guard/conductor is also vital to ensuring passengers board and disembark trains safely and in assisting elderly and disabled passengers. “It is simply unacceptable at a time of massive congestion and growing passenger numbers on trains that the driver is to

be expected to drive the train while at the same time being responsible for passenger safety.” A spokesperson for GTR said: ““We take the safety and security of our passengers very seriously. “On some services, the conductor role will remain in full, but the modern rolling stock that we are introducing, to keep up with the rapidly growing demand on our services means that there are opportunities to review how we deliver further improvements in reliability, punctuality, the quality of on board service and customer satisfaction. Our intention and expectation is that there will be no compulsory redundancies.”

Maintaining an Active Lifestyle in Old Age at Maycroft Manor Care Home An active, independent lifestyle isn’t something that’s usually associated with care homes. However, one local care home is working hard to transform such beliefs. Maycroft Manor Care Home, situated on Carden Avenue in Brighton, is an awardwinning, luxury residential, nursing and dementia care home, which is not only beautiful, but also delivers high-quality relationship-centred care. This means that the individual needs of each resident are at the very heart of the care provided. Customer relationship manager, Lisa Vile, explains: “We build a relationship with every resident in order to truly connect with their personal histories and personalities. “One way we do this is by giving every new Maycroft Manor resident an ‘About Me’ booklet to complete when they move in. This helps team members to understand their routine, family history, what makes them happy or sad, and what support they need in their daily lives.” The home recognises the need for delivering more than just good care. Residents are encouraged to help out in the garden, cook and carry on with the kind of everyday routines which make their lives, theirs. Residents are also empowered to continue with their lives outside of the home, for example picking up their newspaper from the newsagent each morning, or popping out to the weekly coffee morning at the church hall that they’ve been going to for years. Meeting Residents’ Care Requirements Residents living with dementia can have different needs entirely. Maycroft Manor run a range of activities which encourage residents to touch, feel and communicate in other ways than through speech. Visits from ‘travel zoos’, arts and crafts and other reminiscence activities have proven to be very popular. Residents with nursing needs are encouraged to participate in meaningful one on one activities and are introduced to group activities where possible. This community also has 24 hour nurse leadership, run by highly qualified nurses who have the skills to support the individual needs of residents in their care. “Since coming here, I have made very good progress in my mobility and my appetite has come on in leaps and bounds. I receive a weekly hairdo which makes me feel like a “Lady” that’s well cared for. I couldn’t wish for more,” said one Maycroft Manor resident. Market-leading Facilities Maycroft Manor is proud to have been recognised nationally for the facilities they provide, having been awarded ‘Best Care Home’ at the prestigious Pinders Healthcare Design Awards in 2014. At the home, each of the bedrooms is decorated with bespoke furniture designed to assist residents living with dementia and has its own en-suite facilities, while several rooms on the ground floor enjoy direct access onto a private patio garden area. Facilities include a café, therapy room, hairdressers, corner shop, cinema, as well as a choice of spacious lounges and interactive kitchen/dining rooms for those who wish to help prepare their own snacks or drinks. All bedrooms have their own TV, telephone points and Wi-Fi access so residents can stay in regular contact with their loved ones.

Supported housing is ‘under threat’

11

MPs mark 71 years since liberation of Auschwitz

BHT said government cuts put its services at risk Bex Bastable @BexBastable Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) has said planned government cuts put its supported housing service at risk. A n dy Wi n t e r, c h i e f executive of BHT, told John Healey, Labour’s shadow minister for housing, that 44 per cent of its 52 supported homes - for those who had been sleeping rough - would become financially unviable under the Conservative governments plans. As a result, Mr Winter said BHT’s Phase One service is under threat. Mr Healey met with Phase One staff and tenants last Thursday, and heard about the valuable support the project offers vulnerable people in the city. In addition to

providing accommodation, the facility also offers support for a range of medical, financial and psychological needs. It aims to help them to eventually live independently and find employment. Mr Healey said: “The potential closure of thousands of specialist homes, like those provided by Brighton Housing Trust, will have a huge impact on the vulnerable people who rely on them. I saw during my visit to Phase One just how important these supported homes are for many vulnerable people in Brighton. Labour will continue to fight to secure the future of these homes for those who rely on them.” On the government’s plans,MrWinter said: “Now that detailed analysis has been undertaken, it is clear that the consequences will be the closure of specialist

support services.Should the measures be implemented,I am convinced that there will be increases in the number of people rough-sleeping, and the financial costs to the criminal justice system, to the NHS, and to society at large, will dwarf the cost of retaining all the specialist supported housing services that might otherwise close. “The government needs to clarify the matter as a matter of urgency since the development of new schemes are already being put on hold or cancelled, and business plans are being prepared on the basis that there is no future for specialist supported housing.” A review by BHT, also states that if cuts to housing benefit go ahead, many of its 623 homes would be unaffordable to its tenants. This is because under the government’s plans,

housing benefit for tenants in social housing – including more expensive supported accommodation – would be restricted to the lower local housing allowance limits that currently apply only to private tenants. This would result in a shortfall between housing benefit and rents. Th e g o v e r n m e n t a l s o said existing exemptions, including those with a history of homelessness, will no longer apply from April 2018. Mr Winter said: “The government has said that this is unnecessary scare-mongering but organisations like BHT from around the country are reaching similar conclusions following a detailed study of their own organisation. My genuine fear is that the specialist supported housing that the many vulnerable people rely on could be lost come 2018.”

Simon Kirby MP signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment Holocaust Memorial Day (Wednesday) marked 71 years since the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp AuschwitzBirkenau. Simon Kirby,Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau - and is an important opportunity to remember the victims and survivors of

A Week in the City Warning

i360

Base jumpers Five people broke into the i360 site on Saturday morning, climbed the tower, and jumped off with parachutes.Police were called, but announced this week that no further action would be taken. British Airways i360 said it was reviewing its security. A spokesperson said: “Five people broke in to the site, opened the lock on the tower and base jumped off the tower. No-one was hurt and they do not appear to have intended to cause any damage.

“At present, the site is managed by our contractors J T Mackley with 24 hour security supplied by Beacon. We will be reviewing security levels with our contractors in light of this incident. “The building is not complete and permanent security measures will be being installed over the forthcoming months such as high security walls, alarmed doors, access control and CCTV cameras, which will make breaches of this type become increasingly difficult.”

Palm oil on beaches

March over cuts

Dog owners in Brighton and Hove are being advised to keep a close eye on their dogs if they go on local beaches,as a substance toxic to dogs has been spotted. The suspected palm oil deposits are white lumps that look like candle wax. Dogs will often eat it but this can make them very ill. If you spot suspected palm oil on any Brighton and Hove beaches please contact the council’s seafront team on 01273 292716.

Trade unions and local campaign groups will march from the Level to theTown Hall on Saturday, opposing government cuts to council funding. The group will meet at midday.A spokesman said: “Unprecedented cuts to council services are being planned in Brighton and Hove. Hundreds of jobs are under threat. Join us to demonstrate against these cuts and to protect our communities.”

Politics

Immigration Bill Green councillors were set to call for the council to publicly oppose the Immigration Bill being debated in Parliament, at last night’s Full Council meeting (Thursday). The group said the Immigration Bill will create a “hostile environment” for people without legal status to reside in the UK. Cllr Leo Littman (pictured) said: “This bill would have a damaging impact on local authorities, driving up costs and threatening to interfere with their ability and legal duty to protect vulnerable children. It goes completely against our status as a City of Sanctuary and the diverse and rich culture we wish to maintain. That’s why we are asking councillors from all parties to join us in calling for this bill to be rejected.”

Education

A group of academics from the University of Brighton have launched a Brighton Citizen’s Health Services Survey. It is intended to be a six-monthly, public consultation drawing on a large sample of people living in the city, concer ni ng quest ions about local healthcare commissioning, funding cuts, and the privatisation of local NHS services. Dr Carl Walker said: “ Wh e r e a s t h e C C G ’ s Healthwatch focuses on people’s immediate experiences of using health services, we are undertaki ng a survey oriented around specific commissioning practices and public values. These surveys focus on current and upcoming contracts for our health care in Brighton and Hove.” First findings from the survey will be presented at a public event in March. Registration is now open for a new triathlon taking place in September. The event has a maximum of 1,500 places with categories for elite athletes, experienced, intermediate and beginner. The first Brighton and Hove Triathlon will take place on September 11,and is based on Hove Lawns. A sea swim will be followed by cycling, before the run stage takes place on Hove Promenade and Lawns. Cllr Alan Robins, deputy chair of economic development and culture committee, said: “The Brighton and Hove Triathlon is an excellent new event for the city and will attract many people to come along to participate or watch the sporting activity. Brighton and Hove has a strong reputation for high profile sporting fixtures and this is a welcome addition to the events calendar for 2016.” For information, visit: brightonandhovetriathlon. com

Housing

Shadow minister John Healey,Labour’s shadow minister for housing, met with Hove residents as part of his visit to the city on Thursday. Peter Kyle,MP for Hove, arranged for Mr Healey to meet with tenants who had problems with private landlords, or were struggling to get on the housing ladder. One of the residents he met was renting a property deemed “unsafe” but was struggling to get the landlord to make repairs, and another was hoping to get on the housing ladder, but a deposit was out of reach. He said: “It shows how serious the housing crisis is.I see a similar situation right across the country, but there is extra pressure in Brighton and Hove.” He said factors included the lack of homes being built, as well as the amount of people wanting to move to the city.

Club where the dice rolled, and fortunes were lost and won

It is hard now to imagine, as you stand at the junction of St James’s Street and Old Steine, that this was once a highly select locality, frequented by the cream of society. But on the one corner – now occupied by a Subway fastfood outlet – stood one of the three subscription libraries, where everyone came to see and be seen; while opposite it, on the north corner – now a Sainsbury’s Local – stood Raggett’s exclusive gentlemen’s club.

At this establishment, founded by George Raggett before 1792, the wealthy were assured of a good dinner, with high-stakes gambling afterwards in the back rooms. “All the play in which you ever acted,” Sir Philip Francis reports in 1803, “is mere pippin squeezing compared to what is perpetually going forward here at Raggett’s. Every day we hear of ten or twenty thousand won or lost.” An 1809 guide book, H.R.Attree’s Topography of Brighton, concurs: “The dice here are often rattled to some tune, and bank-notes transferred from one hand to another with as little ceremony as bills of the play, or quack doctors’ draughts

J.Spornberg’s view of the Steine, 1798, showing colonnaded library, with Raggett’s building visible behind

to their patients.” According to Osbert Sitwell: “In these rooms George Johnstone procured the means to give his grand parties, while it may have been here that Mr Mellish, less fortunate, played away his estate, by staking as much as £40,000 on a single throw.” I quote the Sporting Intelligence newspaper for 1801: “A match at billiards was played a few days ago at Raggett’s, Brighton, for a considerable sum; the players Mr Spencer and Mr Kinsman. It was for twenty pounds a game; at two o’clock in the morning, when the play ceased,Mr Kinsman was four games ahead. The bettings amounted to one thousand pounds.” According to the Sussex Weekly Advertiser of July 1806, it was here that one of the notorious Barrymore siblings quarrelled with Humphry Howarth, MP for Evesham, over a game of whist: at dawn they faced one another with pistols on the Steine. In an unusual stratagem, Howarth, stout and elderly, stripped to his drawers before the duel, explaining that, having been a surgeon, he had learnt the importance of keeping one’s wounds clean. In the event,

The junction of St. James’s Street and Old Steine, as it is today the affair ended in laughter and random shots from both parties. Lord Byron, writing in June 1809 to the dandy and professional gambler Scrope Davies, who had accompanied him during his visit to Brighton the previous year, hopes that while he is abroad “God or the Devil will prosper you at Newmarket, at the Union, at Racket’s, at the Cocoa Tree”, these four being places where Davies had gamed; and again, in 1821, compiling a list of the dozen or so clubs and societies

he had ever belonged to, Byron mentions “Racket’s (at Brighton)”. Evidently he misremembered the name. Raggett’s could also be a source of charity, as shown in 1806, when a penniless “Cyprian” or prostitute tried to drown herself in the sea, being saved by a Mr Colwort, who plunged in after her. “By this worthy gentleman a subscription was soon after opened at Raggett’s, and thirty guineas were presently collected for the poor girl’s relief.” It is usually claimed that Raggett founded this club

as an offshoot to his London enterprises, but I believe the opposite is more likely – that he began in Brighton and relinquished these premises when he acquired White’s, the preeminent London gaming club, in 1812. (Raggett may have been a local name: there was a Detective Raggett in 1879.) Raggett’s was gone by 1815. As I wander the produce aisles with my plastic basket, I reflect that I am incongruously mingling with the shades of rakes, gamblers, aristocrats and duellists of long ago.

Electric future for Big Lemon Bex Bastable @BexBastable A city bus company has launched a fundraising drive to purchase three electric buses - but it needs help from the community. Tom Druitt, the managing director of The Big Lemon and a Green city councillor - a n n o u n c e d t h e m ove this week. He said: “Since our launch in 2007 over a million passenger journeys have been made on The Big Lemon and we have used over half a million litres of waste cooking oil and saved 900 tonnes of CO2 emissions in the process. In 2016 our aim is to take it to the next level and run bus services on electricity from renewable sources. No emissions, no carbon footprint.” Although The Big Lemon uses fuel from waste cooking oil, it does have a fleet of biodiesel buses, which produce high-levels of nitrous oxide. These

Tom Druitt with the fuel currently used on Big Lemon buses cooking oil are the buses he wants to replace with eco-friendly electric vehicles. But electric buses are expensive - about £250,000 each. The company has applied for a government grant to help fund three of these buses, but in order to get the first one, The Big Lemon needs to raise £100,000. To reach the target, it has released 1,000 community bonds at £100. The two-year fixed rate community bonds would

have an interest rate of six per cent a year - so if you invest £100, in two years’ time, you get £112.36 back. Mr Druitt said: “As a community-owned local business we are asking the people of Brighton and Hove to get on board and invest in this project, to improve air quality in the city and make a healthy profit on your investment at the same time.” To find out more, visit: thebiglemon.com/electric/

Th e i n s t a l l a t i o n o f the first wind turbine foundation began this week, despite the stormy weather. The 400 megawatt project, being built by E.ON, the UK Green Investment Bank, and Canadian energy company Enbridge, 13km off the Sussex coast between Brighton and Lancing, remains set to become the first offshore wind farm off the south coast of England. Th e d eve l o p m e n t i s expected to supply the

equivalent of up to 300,000 homes and to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 600,000 tonnes a year. Chris Tomlinson, E.ON d eve l o pm e n t m a n a g er, said: “After almost six ye a r s o f d eve l o p m e n t , including community engagement, engineering and environmental surveys, it’s a really proud moment to finally be installing the first foundations. “These foundations will be piled into the seabed and will act as a base for each of the 140m turbines, which we will start erecting in early 2017.

“I’m pleased that our highly skilled team have been able to overcome the poor weather conditions that we’ve faced over the last few weeks and continue with the construction of the wind farm as planned.” The offshore work will be managed from a temporary facility in Newhaven until the wind farm’s Operations and Maintenance Base is completed in 2017. The wind farm, which will consist of 116 turbines, will be visible from several coastal points, including Brighton beach, Worthing beach, and Birling Gap.

Initiatives have already begun to raise public awa r e n e s s , t o i m p r ove training for managers and introduce peer support for staff. For me personally, this will be a very proud moment. Following my election in May,I was appointed the first

The support and understanding I received from friends, family and my fellow councillors was vital in helping in my recovery. However, for many people their experience is very different. Mental health stigma and discrimination can have a very detrimental impact on people’s lives and in some cases exacerbate their illness. Despite one in four of us experiencing a mental problem in any one year, a shocking nine out of 10 people have experienced stigma or discrimination. This can lead to isolation and prevent people seeking much needed help. All too often, the first contact with mental health services will be in a crisis. It is in the workplace that stigma can be felt most acutely. Many people

Austerity failing as homes destroyed Phé élim Mac Cafferty @phelimmac

As the wet and gloomy weather rolls on,we continue to see flooding causing devastation up and down the country. For many in the UK, the rain is just an unwelcome yet expected inconvenience of living here. But for an increasing number, it is becoming a devastating force responsible for destroying their livelihoods. Flood defence is just one area where the Conservative n at i o n a l g ove r n m e n t ’ s austerity agenda is driving up costs, rather than bringing them down. Over the past five years, flood defence spending has been cut by over 25 per cent, while the number of flooding events and damage caused

has increased dramatically. According to leading accountancy firm KPMG, the costs of the December 2015 UK floods are likely to top £5 billion. According to the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee in 2013,“reduced revenue funding in recent years has led to a failure to maintain defences and watercourses effectively.” Despite one-off a nn o un c e m en t s by t h e government in response to flooding events, the committee has deemed that “investment remains insufficient to meet growing flood risk”. The last time a comparative risk assessment took place, Brighton and Hove was listed eighth i n h i g h r i s k a r e a s fo r flooding, with 36,412 people potentially at risk. Repeated flooding in Patcham as well as one-off flooding events in locations

such as Brighton station last year show this is very much a Brighton and Hove concern. A few months ago, realising the political r a m i f i c at i o n s o f t h e i r neglect, the Conservative government announced increased spending on flood defence over the next six years.

But building on years of underinvestment, spending will still fall at least £200 million-a-year short of what the Association of British Insurers and environmental groups say is necessary to protect the economy. Au s t e r i t y i s fa i l i n g , and not just in regards to flooding. Cutting

Flood defence is just one area where the Conservative national government’s austerity agenda is driving up costs, rather than bring them down

preventative services are driving up costs in social care and health, as people increasingly get into crisis situations. Cutting investment in s o c i a l ly - r e n t e d h o m e s has led to increasing homelessness which again puts pressure on crisis services. While driving up costs and persecuting the most vulnerable, austerity has failed to deliver in economic terms, stifling growth and not delivering the reductions

of the budget deficit which were promised. On flooding, where homes, businesses and the local economy are at stake, we simply cannot afford not to invest. That’s why this week we urged our fellow councillors across all parties to join us in calling for greater investment in flood defence at the national level, and to take steps locally to reduce flood risk. It’s critical that we act together on this threat.

Meals on Wheels service ‘make-over’ criticised by star A shake-up of the meals on wheels service in Brighton and Hove has seen criticism from singer Alison Moyet. The singer, who lives in Brighton, took toTwitter and said: “As we know, for some old people #MealsOnWheels is the only comfort and contact they get. They paid their dues. Looking at you Brighton and Hove.” This comes as the council a n n o u n c e d c o m mu n i t y meals in Brighton and Hove are set for a “make-over” starting in April. But Cllr Daniel Yates, chair of the city’s health and wellbeing board, said the move was in response to the changing needs of the community. He said: “There are now only around 80 clients that the council funds who receive this service. People have been voting with their feet because these days they have a lot more options such as shared meals and lunch clubs, ready meals from supermarkets and internet ordering. “We have to adapt the service to address the preferences of the 21st century as it is clear to us that the service needs to be delivered in a different way in future.”

The council said a number of local providers are interested in providing the service. Cllr Yates said: “These providers are able and willing to meet the food quality and nutrition s t a n d a r d s we r e q u i r e , and are also committed to carrying out the basic well-being checks that we regard as a vital part of the community meals service. “We know that with a menu of community meals providers we can offer a broader range of choices for residents that meet their needs 365 days a year. “We are working with these providers and the city’s Food Partnership on a new community meal ‘menu’ that will have a range of suppliers offering a wider range of meal choices. “Shared meals are a big success story in the city, with around half a million s e r ve d e ve r y ye a r. We are also working to raise awareness of these among our clients as shared meals can help reduce loneliness and isolation and provide opportunities for advice and support,as well as offering a nutritious meal.” The new-style service is set to begin in April.

Concern as council drops out of Stonewall Bex Bastable @BexBastable The Labour administration running Brighton and Hove City Council has been criticised over its decision not to join the Stonewall Equality Index this year. The city council has been named the top local authority for LGBT issues several times since the index started in 2005. Phélim Mac Cafferty, c o nve n e r o f t h e G r e e n group said: “The Stonewall index has been a vital tool in driving up the council’s standards on LGBT equality, challenging us to continually improve. “Whenever performance has dropped, the index has alerted us to the fact and allowed us to refocus our efforts. I’m really concerned that by failing to participate in the scheme for the first time since it began in 2005, our performance could drop dramatically.

“In multiple years we were voted the top council in the country on the Stonewall Equality Index. Our ongoing commitment to LGBT equality was the right thing to do, and makes financial sense as a more inclusive city council means a happier, more diverse and more productive workforce which reflects the people we serve. Labour’s removal from the Index is a real setback to that hard work. “In 2014, Labour leader Warren Morgan told us that ‘a Labour council will work to restore our position and reputation as an LGBT employer from day one’. Now it seems that while talk is cheap, real action is lacking. How can we restore our position if we don’t even enter? “Self-regulation and monitoring using lightt o u ch s ch e m e s s i m p ly won’t cut it - we need to be challenged to adhere to the highest standards and show we are truly committed to LGBT equality.”

Albion star backs Sugar Smart Brighton and Hove Albion star Bruno is challenging schoolchildren to swap sugary drinks for water for a week as part of a citywide campaign to reduce the amount of sugar being consumed by young people. Bruno Saltor Grau, the Spanish defender has teamed up with the Seagulls’ official charity Albion in the Community (AITC), the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, and Public Health’s schools programme, to front the Sugar Smart campaign. Bruno said: “Having a healthy, balanced diet is vital for footballers but it is just as important for young people. We are not saying children should never have a fizzy drink again. It is about all things in moderation. Hopefully we can help young people become more sugar smart and show them there are alternatives to always choosing sugary drinks.” In Brighton and Hove, one in four children are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school, and in the space of just 12 months more than 300 children were admitted to hospital for teeth extraction. Treating dietrelated diseases costs the NHS in the city more than £80 million a year. A recent government review highlighted the link between the amount of sugary drinks consumed and

Bruno the risk of developingType 2 diabetes and recommended reducing the intake of sugary drinks, particularly in young people. In an effort to encourage youngsters to do just that, Bruno and AITC are trying to make local primary school children take note of how much sugar they are eating and drinking. AITC will visit schools throughout Brighton and Hove to deliver assemblies on the subject before challenging pupils to drink just water and milk instead of fizzy drinks every day for a week – with only one other drink, such as fruit juice, allowed each day. Each child who takes part will have a chance of winning a host of prizes, including family meals at a range of cafes and restaurants, activity sessions, shopping vouchers and tickets for events and shows.

But Cllr Emma Daniel, chair of the neighbourhoods, communities and equalities committee, said: “We are still doing all the very positive things that led to Stonewall naming us the top council in their employer index last year, and we remain supportive of the excellent work they do. “However, our equalities remit extends well beyond the LGBT workforce issues they focus on.We are equally focused on black and minority ethnic, disability and gender issues and

fair and accessible service d e l i ve r y. Th e n a t i o n a l Equality Framework for Local Government (EFLG) assesses all of these areas. It also gives us the chance to learn from best practice elsewhere. “We consider focusing exclusively on the EFLG to be the best use of limited resources and the best way of demonstrating our progress and achievements in all aspects of equalities. “We have also now joined The LGBT International Rainbow Cities Network,

which helps cities improve the quality of life of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans residents of all ages. This gives us the chance to learn from best practice in other cities around the world, and also share our own expertise. “Our aspiration is that no child’s education or childhood is harmed because of their gender identity. An EU study of 92,000 LGBT citizens found that across Europe two third of respondents hid the fact that they are LGBT while at school. I find this statistic

really upsetting. The gender identity of our children and young people should not prevent them from feeling safe at school and making friends. “Our schools have full access to a toolkit developed in partnership with local LGBT youth charityAllSorts. We actively encourage all our schools to make use of this resource and we feel confident they share this aim. Our work in this area has cross-party support, and it’s important we lead by example.”

Pretty Good Thinking

The Book Doctor Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan

Organic beauty products On the high street, fashion giant H&M is grabbing headlines with a bold move to embed sustainability in its latest beauty offering. H&M already sell more than 700 hair-care, makeup, nails, body-care and styling products, which were recently revamped. Later this month a new Conscious collection will join them - with Ecocert-approved organic certifications. Expect to find aluminiumfree roll-on deodorants (under £5), alongside dry shampoos, tinted lip balms, body creams and various face masks at affordable prices. The new lines are intended to be “good for people, the planet and your wallet”, and include aromatherapy-based fragrances. The minimal packaging is recycled, and the preview pictures reveal an accessible, pared-back apothecary look that will appeal to all ages.

The H&M Beauty concept designer Sara Wallander said: “We always aim to develop our products to high and responsible standards in both materials and production. With the Conscious range we have taken this philosophy even further. We are very proud to now be able to offer organic beauty to our customers.” This all sounds wonderful, and timely. Perhaps the only surprising

aspect to this mainstream progression from Sweden is that IKEA didn’t beat them to it. Next week I’ll be looking into great scents and gift ideas for Valentines Day (and if you’re single this is an ideal time to treat yourself, so don’t feel left out in any way). I’m always on the hunt for new makers and extended ranges by the people we already know, so it is great to hear about new

soaps by Shaloah. I’m also checking out a lovely gift set from another Sussex maker, Rachael at the Organic Balm Company. I’m going to test a premium brush collection from the Pixiwoo sisters and Real Techniques founders you’ve probably heard a bit about the Bold Metal collection already, so it will be great to discover how versatile these new designs are in practice. Meanwhile, the gang over at Skins Matter are gearing up for their fifth annual FreeFrom Skincare Awards. The Ultimate Natural Beauty Bible, Love Natural Love Organic Show and Formula Botanica organic cosmetic school all back these awards, which open in February to showcase the best skincare products that are free from allergens and other ingredients that consumers prefer to avoid. We wish all of the entrants the best of British luck.

Laura Lockington @bookloversupper Reader, I Dumped Him…and joined the Break-Up Clubs

By Lorelei Mathias

At last. An intelligent, funny, warm-hearted book that can actually make you feel smarter than you really are by reading it. Mathias is that rare breed of writer with a gift of making slyly humorous comments that seem to roll off her pen, or in reality, keyboard. This is a celebration of the people that bring you back to life when your world closes in: your mates. Relationships come and go, but for members of the Break Up Club membership never truly expires. I have to admit that I sniggered my way through this book, so don’t read it on the train or you’ll get some wary looks headed in your direction, I know I did. This is part comedy, part self-help but wholly fabulous. The Break-Up Club is founded by Olivia (a dumper) and Bella (a dumpee).

The club meets every Sunday with other members and find ways to support one another through the heartache and melancholy, learning to laugh and love again. Of course, I bet you can’t help but feel a bit jealous of the friends in this book, unlike the pals that come and go in your life, this lot stick around and bring wine, too. If I wasn’t allergic to marriage or long term relationships it made me want to break up with someone just so that I could join the Break-Up Club immediately. Witty, knowing and heartfelt. More from Mathias please!

Community benefits from Pride’s social impact fund Residents across Brighton and Hove are reaping the rewards of the first ever Brighton Pride Social Impact Fund. A dance school for vulnerable women, a sports club for older people and children playing in one of the city’s biggest parks are among those to benefit from a total of more than £4,000 of grants. The money was raised from the tens of thousands of people who turned the city into a carnival of colour last August for the annual LGBT celebration. Paul Kemp, director of Brighton Pride, said: “2015 was our best ever year for community fundraising and by setting up the Brighton Pride Social Impact Fund we were hoping to have a greater beneficial effect on the wider community. “The amount we were able to give back to local groups through the Social Impact Fund exceeded even our own expectations for its first year, especially given the financial challenges facing public and private sector organisations, and we are hoping to build on this in the coming years so even more worthy causes and local people benefit.” The grants were

awarded by a panel made u p o f r e p r e s e n t a t i ve s from local media groups, including the Brighton & Hove Independent. The aim was to support groups or organisations which need a little helping hand in making a difference in their community. They did not have to be LGBT related; they did not even have to be directlylinked to Pride - the impact just had to be positive. The full awards were as follows: n £600 to the Marta Scott Dance Company to help disadvantaged or abused

The amount we were able to give back to local groups exceeded even our own expectations. women take part in classes with the aim of performing in the Brighton Pride 2016 parade n £750 to the Friends of Preston Park for a new piece of equipment in the park’s playground n £250 to the Friends of Preston Park for an Easter egg quiz and hunt

n £500 to Radio Reverb, Brighton’s community radio station, to help create a listen again facility n £300 to the St James’s Street Community Action Group to replace three elm trees in St James’s Street n £350 to the St James’s Street Community Action Group for a planter in Marlborough Place n £1,000 to the St James’s Street Community Action Group towards the cost of security lighting in Dorset Gardens to deter drug dealers. This money will be ring-fenced and held by the Social Impact Fund until the group can raise the remaining money towards the project n £500 to Little Green Pig, a creative writing educational charity towards helping nine to 11-year-olds create a film on homeless people in the city n £300 to the Manor in East Brighton to subsidise Boccia Group aimed at over 50s. Jeremy Ogden, chairman of the St James’s Street Community Action Group, which was handed three awards, said: “The St James Street LAT is delighted to receive some funds from the Social Impact Fund which

Brighton Pride 2015 (Photograph: Eddie Mitchell) we can use toward making the area a better place for all. “Many of the local people are affected by Pride and it is welcomed that some of the funds raised are going back into the impacted areas and for the benefit of residents.” Brighton education charity Little Green Pig was

awarded £500 towards a project which sees children aged between nine and 11 m ake a film on the experiences of life on the streets for homeless people. JulieWatson, co-director, Little Green Pig, said: “We are delighted! Thanks to the fund we’ll be able to

make a film to capture the project our young writers are working on with Brighton HousingTrust for the Fringe Festival.” To find out more about the Social Impact Fund, and this year’s Brighton Pride event, visit: www.brighton-pride. org

Bringing brands to life through music and sound HEIDI CARROLL talked audio-branding at a ‘Bitesized Learning’ event

Brighton Chamber of Commerce regularly holds Bitesized Learning Sessions, where local businesses can share their expertise. Heidi Carroll, of advertising and marketing specialists MEERKATworks recently held a session on “Audio Branding - the art of bringing brands to life through music and sound. Here are her top tips: 1. Know and understand your target audience Having an in-depth knowledge of what triggers your target audience’s emotions is the first step towards successful audio branding. Get under the skin of what they like and who they are - having this

understanding of what makes them tick will help you create music that makes it stand out in the crowd. 2. Articulate what your brand stands for before addressing what the music must do Th i n k i n g a b o u t yo u r brand’s voice will help you give a more clear and concise brief. What are the key characteristics of your business? The better the brief the better the response will be from the musicians who compose the music. 3. Be objective After smell, it’s sound that evokes our strongest emotional response. Don’t let your personal taste in music effect your final

decision on what the right music is for your business. 4. Don’t involve too many people in the decisionmaking process Music and sound is subjective, so the more people you involve, the more different opinions you will have and the decision making process will become too emotionally charged. 5. Audit your competitors Call your competitors, ask them complex questions until they eventually put you on hold and maybe you’ll hear something which could serve as inspiration for choosing your own audio branding. 6. Do a touch point brand analysis

Making a meaningful impact in the workplace through mindfulness Emily Yates @MsEYates Brighton and Hove’s Integrated Care Service (BICS) carried out extensive mindfulness programs last year that has transformed its style of teamwork. Th e c h a n g e s t o t h e workplace culture at BICS surpasses any usual conception of “wellbeing at work”, however - with mindfulness applied not just as a tool, but the company’s entire operating system. In 2014, the community services provider hosted mindfulness teachers Joel and Michelle Levey, and systems theorists Barry Oshry and John Watters, for a series of workshops that set BICS in its new direction. In-house mindfulness programs have since f o c u s s e d o n Fr e d e r i c Laloux’s concept of the Teal Organisation - a selfmanaging organisational model with the qualities of “wholeness” and “listening to purpose”(Reinventing Organizations, 2014). For colleagues at BICS,

listening to purpose means coming together to make a meaningful impact on the people they serve. C h i e f e x e c u t i ve Z o e Nicholson said: “We were driven by a desire to put people in charge of their own healthcare journeys, so we can transform the current paradigm of ‘what’s the matter?’ to ‘what matters to you?’ “As a result of our programs we now have a new purpose: ‘care unbound to create more possibilities for care in every moment’.” Colleagues are also encouraged to practice “wholeness” in the workplace - a keyTeal feature that aims to integrate the personal with the professional self. The changes have led to two to three daily meditation sessions and a range of mindful meeting practices, including an opening check in time where each team member is invited to bring their whole self into the room. Phoebe Munson, team member at BICS, said: “Our mindfulness strategies are part of a wholeness practice

where the whole team acknowledges you leave your personal agenda at the door. “Exposing one’s vulnerability in that way in the workplace is an action that can only be balanced by compassion - both support for fellow colleagues as well as the vital act of selfcompassion.” With great advances in “listening to purpose” and “wholeness”, BICS is also on its way to realising the third Teal principle of selfmanagement. Most teams are now self-managing, and the removal of specific job titles has empowered staff with a more fluid kind of leadership. In contrast to companies like Zappos (the US retailer whose sudden switch to h o l o c r a cy l e ave s s o m e commentators in doubt), BICS is travelling a more organic route towards Teal. Zoe Nicholson believes that “listening to purpose” and “wholeness” allow a natural kind of selfmanagement to emerge. She said: “Self-managing teams have always made sense to me but I felt the

former two breakthroughs best to invest time and energy in. “I had a realisation that listening to purpose is actually a set of skills and that the route to that might be through mindfulness. Our programs have aimed to build our capacity to listen to purpose, and develop the capacities of everybody to do that.” John Watters, managing director of Living Leadership, introduced the work of systems theorist Barry Oshry to BICS. His workshops incorporate mindfulness to help people observe their habitual behaviour more clearly, bringing compassion and awareness into their relationships with others. Mr Watters said: “In the first flush of enthusiasm o f w o r k i n g w i t h Te a l principles some companies have neglected the potency of habitual behaviour and paid insufficient attention to personal and organisational transition. “BICS by contrast have been very thoughtful about how they are introducing

Mindfulness in the workplace enhances teamwork this new approach to management.” Dutch healthcare company Buurtzorg - whose managerless structure has transformed community nursing - is widely considered the model Teal Organisation. Its founder Jos de Blok conducted a special w o r k s h o p fo r B I C S a t

Brighton’s Meaning Conference last August, forming the latest in a series of influences for BICS in its purposeful evolution. Emily Yates is a freelance writer and yoga therapist. Find her on Twitter @MsEYates or at emilyyateslondon.com

Supporting the local economy with independent gift vouchers Employers signal commitment to independent retailers, by treating staff to Goodmoney rewards Bex Bastable @BexBastable Brighton and Hove is lucky in that its independent businesses play a significant part of the tourist attraction for visitors. Th e G o o d m o n e y g i f t voucher scheme aims to take advantage of that,by keeping money spent in the city circulating the local economy. The idea was inspired by the Lewes Pound and Bristol Pound - boosting the local economy by encouraging money to stay circulating within the city rather than being sucked out by big companies and chain stores. But Goodmoney co-founder Dan Webb saw an opportunity in the shape of gift vouchers. The gift voucher industry in the United Kingdom is worth an estimated £5 billion a year. Mr Webb wanted Brighton and Hove to take a slice of that. He said: “We launched Goodmoney gift vouchers at the end of September 2015 to help independent local businesses link up and create a new kind of gift voucher – that offers a more exciting choice of gifts and experiences than generic high street gift vouchers. “In our first three months we’ve already sold £7,000 worth of gift vouchers and we have 200 unique local businesses in the Goodmoney network.” So things seem to be going well for Goodmoney. Mr Webb said over the Christmas period vouchers were purchased online from buyers as far afield as Liverpool and Dublin. He thought

these buyers were relatives, unsure of what to buy their Brighton-based loved ones for Christmas, so a local gift voucher was a good choice. Local businesses are also using the vouchers to reward staff, and at the same time, are supporting the local economy. Hanna Smith of Madgex, said: “We actively support local businesses and charities. The Goodmoney gift voucher scheme fits perfectly with our ethos of rewarding employees well. We’re lucky to be in Brighton, it’s full of vibrant, talented people and we are proud to help the independent businesses that are run by them.” Nikki Gatenby of Propellernet said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Goodmoney gift vouchers. Playing an active role in the local community is important to us all at Propellernet and we make regular time available for staff to work on projects they’re passionate about. Goodmoney gift vouchers are a wonderful way to re-

ward staff.” MrWebb said: “We’re really pleased that so many local employers have got behind the scheme. It’s thought that over half of the estimated £5 billion worth of gift cards and gift vouchers sold in the UK are used for staff engagement. “So far, we’ve heard of Goodmoney gift vouchers being used by employers for staff Christmas gifts, birthday gifts and monthly competitions, like the top performing sales person or the staff member voted best team player. Brighton and Hove Buses have even been giving them away to local schools and charities looking for raffle prizes. “We’ve been absolutely delighted to discover that so many local employers care immensely about Brighton and Hove and love the idea of rewarding their staff in a way that supports independent local businesses and the wider community. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has already

Goodmoney gift vouchers can be spent with a wide range of independent local Brighton and Hove businesses; from shops, restaurants and cafes, to sports clubs, kids clubs, music tutors, local artists. To see the full list of participating businesses and to purchase gift vouchers, visit: www.goodmoney.co.uk

Sam Lambourne from The Jog Shop on George Street bought Goodmoney gift vouchers.” So where can you spend these gift vouchers? Clare Bryant runs her clothing shop Flax Emporium on Trafalgar Street in North Laine, home to plenty of niche, quirky independent boutiques that draw people into the city. On why she signed up to the gift voucher scheme, Ms Bryant said: “As it was something created for independents, it seemed like a really good idea to me. “Being part of it is very exciting. One of the good things about Brighton is the North Laine, and its independent shops. “We all know everybody, there is a real sense of com-

munity on Trafalgar Street.” Just around the corner is Molly’sVintage, tucked away on Tidy Street. As it is slightly off the beaten track, and gets less footfall than other shops in the North Laine, the gift voucher scheme was a perfect solution. Molly Bray opened her vintage shop six months ago, and said Goodmoney was a great way to put Molly’sVintage on the map. Ms Bray said: “We’ve started to get a good reputation and regular customers, but Goodmoney is a nice way to meet new people. “I signed up as I am so new, and it felt like a really good way to connect with other businesses and to draw cus-

tomers in too.” Another Goodmoney member off the beaten track is the community-owned pub The Bevy. The Bevendean pub closed its doors in 2010, after a string of violent incidents caused police to shut it down. This left the 17,000 residents living in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean without a pub. That’s when the community got together and decided to reopen The Bevy as a community hub in December 2014. It was funded by more than 700 shareholders and re-built and decorated by an army of volunteers. But it’s not just a pub.The Bevy hosts lunch clubs for

the elderly, has a function room for events, and is a real hub for the community. So why did The Bevy decide to get involved with Goodmoney? Iain Chambers, a cofounder of The Bevy, said: “To start off with we want our customers to come in and use their Goodmoney vouchers with us.Eventually we want to build ourselves up to be retailers.” But Mr Chambers also hopes the voucher scheme will bring in business from the city centre. He said: “It is important for the Bevy to keep its links to the city centre. Goodmoney is a great way of maintaining that link. “There are few reasons to come to Bevendean and Moulsecoomb,so it is impor-

tant that places likeThe Bevy and other institutions on the estate draw the city in.” And it’s not just The Bevy that needs support. Sam Lambourne, fromThe Jog Shop on George Street, has signed up to Goodmoney, and said, “Us independents need all the help we can get - we are up against it.” Another local business that has got on board is Joanna Zara Millenary. For milliner Joanna Zara, Goodmoney is a great way of making more people aware of her business. Creating handmade hats and fascinators from her small studio in Hove, most of Joanna’s business comes from word of mouth or a Google search. Goodmoney not only gives the business another plat-

She said: “I got involved because it is focused on Brighton businesses. It is a really good idea. “We are working together in a way that works for everybody.” One of the perks of being a Goodmoney retailer, is the monthly networking events, where local businesspeople meet, and can exchange ideas and even services. The next one is being held at The Bevy. Ms Zara said: “We meet a broad range of people but we have all got something in common - we all run a business in Brighton and Hove.”

Dynamo brings some extra magic to Brighton Centre

Picture by Andrew Timms by Phil Hewitt @BrightonIndy The Brighton Centre is no small arena, yet such has been the demand that an extra matinee on Saturday, January 30, has had to be added for magician Dynamo who’s playing there this week (January 27-31). Dynamo, whose real name is Steven Frayne, first hit our screens three years ago in Magician Impossible. In the short time since, he has quickly established himself as one of the world’s bestknown magicians, with his series airing in more than 180 countries. Transferring that TV magic to the big auditoria doesn’t necessarily make it a different thing, though: “It is and it isn’t. I am doing what I am known for and what

people like to see me do. I don’t want to lose that in a big arena.” As for his popularity: “I think deep down we all have a desire to feel like a kid again. As you get older, you learn more about the world. You get more sceptical. We all think we know how everything works, and then with magic, you see something you don’t know how it works and it’s like you are wanting to ask you mum or dad ‘How does this work?’ “It’s amazing when you are taken back to that giddiness of being a child again.” As for how he started, Dynamo recalls there was an element of self-protection: “I had a bit of a hard time at school. “My grandpa picked me up from school one day, and he used to do magic, more

for the family. He was like the uncle who does magic. And he could see that I was being picked on by some others, that they were trying to put me in a wheelie bin.He showed me some magic that would take their strength away and make it impossible to do that.” And when he started college at the age of 16,he had the chance to start again: “We were introducing ourselves, and I was able to say ‘I am Steven and I do magic.’” That was the end of the bullying. Before long, he’d dropped out of college to concentrate on the magic so well was it going by now. “It’s a shame that my grandfather isn’t around to see me now. It is all in his memory.” Tickets cost £32.50-£99. Visit brightoncentre.co.uk/ events.

A gripping tale of love and self-discovery from a marginalised member of society Edinburgh hit I Am Not Myself These Days – the fast-paced adaptation of Josh Kilmer-Purcell’s bestselling autobiography – plays Brighton Dome on Saturday, February 13. Spokeswoman Emma Robertson said: “At the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe the extraordinarily-compelling tour-de-force performance of Tom Stuart, in his own adaptation of the bestselling memoir, became one of the talking points of the Festival. “Audiences were visibly moved by the st or y of alcoholic drag queen Aqua desperately trying to make a relationship work with Jack, a high-class rent boy addicted to crack. “Now it’s coming to Brighton Dome on Saturday, February 13, as part of a UK tour that includes a twoweek London run. “I Am Not Myself These Days is a fast-paced one-man

Manners, grace and humanity by Phil Hewitt @BrightonIndy It’s all aboard Private Lives for 2008 Strictly Come Dancing champion Tom Chambers. “It feels like we are stepping on board a very fast train from Scotland to London that doesn’t actually stop at any of the stations along the way and instead just jumps from station to station. “There are lots of quotes from Noel Coward about not letting the ball drop, and that’s the way it feels,” says Tom who tours with the show to Brighton’s Theatre Royal from Monday to Saturday, February 1-6. Tom stars as the lovable andcharmingElyotalongside Laura Rogers (Tipping The Velvet) as the warring exlovers who unexpectedly meet while on their luxury honeymoons with their new partners. “The beauty of Coward is that you just can’t believe it was written so long ago. My first couple of friends came along on Saturday and said ‘How do you remember all those lines!’ I remember that from Holby City and all the

medical jargon. You just get into it. It’s muscle memory. The more you have to learn, the easier it gets. I had seven months at the beginning of last year when I was working on a completely-different project and so I took myself out of the game. And then coming back to it was hard. “It’s that old thing: if you don’t use it, you lose it. “But with this, it’s one of those things of absolutely connecting with the content. I feel sorry for people like architects that have to work really hard for three weeks on a presentation for something that might not happen. You have got to put everything into it, like this. You have got to feel passionately about it. “I saw it ten years ago with Alan Rickman. I had to see it three times it was so good. I was just swept away by it, and then all these years later, the script just comes out of the blue. I read it and I really connected with it. The older you get, the more savvy you get with relationships, and you start

Picture Alastair Muir to see the significant points. “And it is just an era that I love anyway.I love the 1930s, the Fred Astaires, the Bing Crosbies, all that style and all that class. I think all the old ones are the great ones.” And Tom also loves the

insights Coward brings. “We as humans try to show manners and grace, and we go everywhere, whether we are at work or in the street, and we try to give a guise. “Coward shows that – and then shows underneath it all just how animalistic and brutal we can be. I love the fact Coward shows that up so brilliantly. We are back in the 1930s and we are seeing that, and it has probably been that

way for the rest of time. “I love Elyot’s disdain for the social rules. He lives in the moment. He wants to enjoy the party as much as be can. He articulates it all beautifully. He is a man full of spontaneity, but he is a little bit like Jekyll and Hyde. He gets intensely jealous. He is like a bull!” And with Laura as his Amanda, Tom reckons he has hit the jackpot: “I have

seen three versions of it. I just had a look on YouTube once we were into it, just to gauge where we were with it all, and it was obvious that Laura’s version ofAmanda is absolutely exquisite. She is like a songbird.” Tickets cost £16.90£42.40. Call 0844 871 7650 or visit www. atgtickets.com/brighton.

A myriad of guilt-free and nutritious food When it comes to grabbing a bite to eat on the go Brighton has its fair share of excellent cafés to choose from. Whether you are looking for somewhere to have a rest during a shopping trip or just a quick lunch during the working day; every possible taste is catered for. Of the myriad choices, few c a n c o n t e n d w i t h the window display that Foodilic create each day to tempt in the hungry diner. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian or carnivorous it is hard to resist the fresh and bright platters of vegetables and salads that seem to ooze health and vitality. At a time of year when many are briefly flirting with a healthy lifestyle, the option of nutritious guilt-free food on the go is a welcome one. I went to their newer premises on Western Road that offers a different experience to the original “all you can eat” buffet of the original restaurant. With a McDonalds on the opposite corner and a KFC across the road; the location of this restaurant really hammers home the lack of healthy options that grace our high streets. We visited late on a Tuesday evening and so

Winner winner chicken dinner.

Veggie and meat options catered for at Foodillic.

Few can contend with the window display that Foodillic create each day to tempt in the hungry diner.

there was a limited amount of food to choose from; despite this we did not have much difficulty. The menu at Western Road has a good mix of vegetarian and meat options with many of the main meals coming with two salads of your choice. This gives the diner a great deal of choice and variety; and with the most expensive main costing just £7.95 it is also excellent

value. I went for the honey glazed chicken breast with a giant couscous salad and sweet potatoes. The generously sized portion of chicken was lovely and with a crisp and well seasoned skin. There was a faint sweetness from the glaze with a tangy lemon freshness making the meat really flavoursome. The accompanying couscous salad was packed with aubergine, courgette, leek, and peppers and the sweet potato with figs was delicious and slightly caramelised. My friend decided on the pork escalope with a side of the “Superfoodilic broccoli salad tossed with avocado , cracked wheat, and physalis”. Much like my chicken, he was presented with a sizeable pork escalope that had a crisp breadcrumb coating. The salad was very light with crisp broccoli florets adding bite. It was a good choice to go with the pork as it was a very filling dish. Foodilic is not just about salads and health foods and have a good selections of cakes if you are after something sweet. As they were closing I took a sea salt caramel slice to go which was a well balanced offering which could easily have been

overly sweet. They also have some rather fantastic looking giant meringues if you are a fan. In the crowded market place that is the Brighton c a f é s c e n e Fo o d i l i c i s certainly a strong player. The food is beautifully presented and is full of interesting ingredients and influences. What I like about Foodilic is that you can create your own combinations from their menu meaning that no two visit need be the same. Not only this it is certainly excellent value for money which is a massive plus in a city where everything seems to be getting more expensive. This is probably not news to many of you as Foodilic has cemented its place as a Brighton favourite; and it would seem its reputation is growing with BBC 6 music favourite, Kiran Leonard, singing their praises on stage later that evening at The Albert. Tom Flint writes a food blog Food Booze and Reviews at: www. foodboozeandreviews.com

Coffee pods have been the Next Big Thing ever since it became acceptable to write Next Big Thing with capital letters. They’ve monopolised the at-home coffee market and you could probably run a coffee shop using a Nespresso machine and nobody would really care. Last year, the nation spent £112 million on coffee pods. Is that a chronic waste of money or an opportunity for further exploitation of the lazy masses? Unilever backs the latter, and most probably also the former, and has started making pods. Unilever owns PG Tips, and it’s this brand they’ll be attempting to drag into the 21st century. PG Tips in pods is currently being trialled in France, and if it’s a hit, they’ll force the idea across the pond. For £140, Madame can buy a PG Tips machine, which is made by Krups - they make Nespresso machines, so it’s probably alright. The PG Tips pods work in the other pod machines too, so a Nespresso machine for £70 would be a smarter choice. In 40 seconds, Madame can enjoy tea at the “perfect drinking temperature”. As industry standards for “perfect temperature” range from lukewarm

to tepid, the subjective suggestion of perfection is a fragile concept. The initial flavours are Caramel andVanilla Black Tea,GreenTea,Peppermint Tea, and Raspberry and Apple Tea.That’s a strong message they’re sending to Team Earl Grey. Right back at you, PG Tips. Nespresso has George Clooney. The French PG Tips advertisement has Cirque Du Soleil. Who could possibly back the advertising campaign on British soil? Who could epitomise the brand’s core values and successfully portray the image of a British teadrinker? Our money’s on a nobody from TOWIE. Or a wannabe from Geordie Shore. Perhaps a “celebrity” from Made In Chelsea - we wouldn’t mind that one as much, as they can at least speak an intelligible form of English.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE CITY COUNCIL

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984

PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990 PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) REGULATIONS 1990 The following applications involving or affecting the setting of Listed Buildings or affecting the character of a Conservation Area were registered during week ending 22/01/2016:

NOTICE is hereby given that Brighton & Hove City Council (“the Councilâ€?) proposes to make the Orders named below under the relevant sections of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, which if they come into force will introduce a new controlled parking scheme in the Ditchling Gardens and Hollingbury Road (“Controlled Parking Zone Gâ€?). The effects of the proposed Order would be as follows:Brighton & Hove Various Controlled Parking Zones Consolidation Order 2015 Amendment Order No.* 201* (TRO-2a-2016) The Order will introduce kerbside restrictions where permit holders and visitors may park within Controlled Parking Zone G. Permits will be issued to residents, the cost of which is currently ÂŁ125 per year. Disabled residents who have a Blue Badge and wish to park in resident parking places will be required to purchase a resident permit for a small administrative charge only (currently ÂŁ10). A resident for the purposes of this scheme is a person aged 17 years or over whose usual residence is at premises, the postal address of which is in any of the qualifying streets specified below:Controlled Parking Zone G: Ditchling Gardens and Hollingbury Road The Order also introduces to the scheme area visitor, business, carer and doctor permits all of which will be subject to restrictions. Briefly, in the case of visitor permits, applications will only be accepted from residents within the area of the scheme, there will be a limit of 50 permits issued to a resident in any 12 month period and each permit will cost ÂŁ2.80 per day. Business permits will be issued to businesses located within the area of the scheme if they can prove a genuine business need for a vehicle on street. A maximum of 2 permits may be applied for by a business and they will be subject to criteria determined by the Council with each permit currently costing ÂŁ312 per year. A carer permit can be applied for if the carer, who does not have to be a resident, has to visit a resident (or residents) within the area of the scheme and that resident is in need of a carer by virtue of age and or physical/mental infirmity or is a woman requiring ante or post natal care. The carer scheme is for non-professional carers. Doctor permits will be issued to any fully registered person operating from a surgery located within the area of the scheme where a doctor’s parking bay has been provided, at a cost of ÂŁ93.60 per year for each bay. Please note generally that in respect of the issue of any of the types of permit referred to above, the Council will exercise its discretion to ensure as far as possible that any priority groups are issued with permits first but the Council cannot guarantee that everyone will be issued with a permit or that a parking space will be available. The costs of the permits referred to in this Notice would take effect from the date the Order came into force. The costs for permits and pay and display parking stated in this notice and order are current as of the date at the bottom of this notice and are subject to change. Parking places of the following types will be introduced in Controlled Parking Zone G with the hours, charges and eligibility shown below:Permit parking only from Monday to Sunday between 9am - 8pm inclusive: Ditchling Gardens and Hollingbury Road. Charges for permits are detailed above. For vehicles displaying a valid permit. Motorcycles only At Any Time Ditchling Gardens and Hollingbury Road – For solo motorcycles only. Streets eligible for a Resident’s Permit for Area G: Ditchling Gardens and Hollingbury Road The underlying waiting restriction in the scheme area will be no waiting at any time and will be indicated by a double yellow line in Ditchling Gardens and Hollingbury Road. A refined ownership experience by staff reporter

Plug-in hybrids are moving the game on in the war against excessive fuel consumption. Mitsubishi’s new Outlander hybrid isn’t the usual highprice, early adopter-friendly offering, as it boasts a sensible money price tag and real world versatility writes Iain Dooley,PressAssociationsenior motoring writer While Mitsubishi’s latest Outlander offers a pleasingly revised and refined owner-

ship experience, this model is alittledifferentasit’saplug-in hybrid variant. It also hits the ground running with boasts of 100-plus mile fuel economy figures and ultra low CO2 ratings. Mitsubishi has opted for a petrol-electric setup which is claimed to offer high levels of refinement along with the low running costs associated with petrol motoring. The car’s 2.0-litre engine partners with two electric motors - one at each end - to drive the Outlander. All-wheel drive performance is retained despite the absence of a propshaft,

while the car can automatically channel power where it’s needed, such as a front-wheel drive mode for undemanding urban duties. A press of a button transforms this Outlander into a surprisingly capable 4x4, proving no less able than its diesel-powered stablemates. This activity-focused approach continues inside, where there’s ample space for five in the practical cabin. The hybrid hardware has resulted in the removal of the regular car’s third row of seats, but the upshot is a flat, wide load space. Visit www.mitsubishicars.co.uk

AUDI IS HAVING A GAS WITH HYDROGEN-POWERED CONCEPT Audi has revealed a futuristic conceptpoweredbyhydrogen andassistedbyabattery, fourwheel drive and the world’s largest in-car solar panel. The solar panel on the h-tron’s roof can generate enough power for an average of 1.7 miles’ driving per day. Meanwhile, thehybridbattery system is used for boosting acceleration on demand and storing recuperated energy that’s gathered under braking. The super-advanced drivetrain could be on European roadsby2020,withorwithout thesolarassistance.Threehydrogen tanks supply enough fuel for around 372 miles of very gentle driving. However, using around a kilogram of hydrogen per 62 miles corresponds to a claimed efficiency rating of 60 per cent – better than any combustion engine. Curious visitors to the Detroit Motor Show, where the concept is on show, will find the fuel cell stack under the

bonnet. Refuelling can be completed in four minutes. Peak power is 282bhp, and a huge total torque quota of 408lb/ft allows the heavy car to reach 62mph in under 7 secondsandgoontoa124mph top speed.

All four wheels are driven thanks to twin motors; one at the front and the other at the rear. Such a design opens the door for currently impossible technologies to facilitate lowspeed manoeuvres, stability control and more.

Audi already owns a facility in northern Germany for ‘cracking’ hydrogen for use in cars. The facility is powered by wind turbines, and as well as hydrogen it produces synthetic methane for use in the A3 g-tron and A4 g-tron.

ROADTEST:VOLVOXC90D5AWDINSCRIPTION

AS SWEDE AS IT GETS

By Matt Allan Motoring writer

The weather’s been a bit rubbish recently, in case you hadn’t noticed. I mention this because for one week of this grim endless onslaught of rain and cold we werelucky enoughtohavethe keys to a Volvo XC90, which shrugged off the worst the climate could throw at it as if it were a mild spring day. Sadly for my other half, she didn’t have the benefit of this while stuck for six hours in weather-induced gridlock. HadshebeendrivingtheVolvo ratherthanherowncarIthink she’dwouldbeenlessfrazzled by the time she made it home. The XC90 is the sort of place you wouldn’t really mind spending hour after hour in. The interior is spacious, comfortable and well thought out. Plus it’s so laden with gadgets – from heated seats to a DVD player and window-rattling stereo – that you could entertain yourself for days. That Bowers and Wilkins Premium Sound system offers an option to recreate the soundscape of Gothenburg Concert Hall in the car. It’s rather fitting given that the XC90 is about the samesizeinsideasthefamous venue. It really is big and unless you’ve bred an entire football teamit’sprobablyasmuchcar as any family will ever need. Passengers in the front two rows enjoy acres of leg, head and shoulder room. What’s more the XC90 is a genuine seven-seater. A simple mechanism sees two proper seats fold up from the boot floor to offer a third row designed to accommodate adults up to 5’ 7”. With the middle row slid

forward seven average-sized adults will fit comfortably for even the longest of drives. Importantly from a practical point of view, even with the third row of seats up the Volvo offers as much boot

space as some hatchbacks, whichmeansyoucanstillhaul around all the child-related rubbish a family needs. Fold them away and there’s more than 1,000 litres of storage. While endlessly practical, the interior is also a wonder of style and comfort. Clean, clear surfaces and minimal physical controls ooze Scandinavian style and anything that isn’t clad in sumptuous Bridge of Weir leatheriscoveredinothertopqualitymaterials.Ourtestcar came packed with more than tengrand’sworthofextras, including a system to automatically manoeuvre you through slow-movingqueuesoftraffic, and electronically controlled air suspension. As well as

adapting the ride according to the driving mode this allows the car to automatically “kneel” when you park up and lets you lower the boot level at the touch of a button. Even without the list of extra goodies (adaptive cruise, powered panoramic roof, self-parking system), it’s well equipped.BeingaVolvo, safety kit is generous and advanced. There are myriad airbags and traction control systems, pedestrian detection and auto braking, and the Volvo On Call system which automatically calls for help if you’re in an accident. There’s also the superb Sensus touchscreen system. Clear, slick and lightningquick, this nine-inch panel

is the closest to smartphone responsiveness and usability I’ve experienced. Obviously, with all this kit and luxury the XC90 is no featherweight but it’s managed to keepits bulk in check. On the road it feels big without being cumbersome – the steering is light and responsive and body movement is kept under control. It’ll never matchaRangeRoverSportfor dynamism but it’s composed on even twisting roads and the air suspension provides a smooth, soothing ride. Hauling all this tech about is a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Smaller but more powerful than the previous generation’s five-cylinder unit, it offers 222bhp and 347lb/ft of

torque and will shift the Volvo to 60mph in 7.4 seconds. While this sounds good on paper, behind the wheel it doesn’t feel so nippy and the eight-speed auto can take a momenttorespondtosudden acceleration. That said, it’s a smooth and quiet drivetrain under most circumstances and returns official figures of 50mpg and 149g/km of CO2 – better than many key rivals. Overall it’s easy to see why the XC90 has been winning plaudits all over the world. It combines style, luxury and the latest technology with moreprosaicqualitiestooffer a spacious, practical and economicalfamilycarthatmakes youfeelspoiledeverytimeyou slip behind the wheel.

Wilson the super sub as Albion return to winning ways at home Substitute James Wilson bagged the winner as Albion made it back-toback Championship wins with a 2-1 home success over Huddersfield on Saturday. It was a firstAmex success for Brighton since a 3-2 win over Charlton in December and the first time they had netted at home since that game. The win moved Brighton up to third in the table but they dropped a place to fourth on Monday evening when Burnley beat Derby County 4-1. Bobby Zamora fired the home side ahead following a fine breakaway on 30 minutes but the Terriers levelled courtesy of a Harry Bunn header two minutes into first half stoppage-time. But Albion were not to be denied and Manchester United loaneeWilson headed home with 24 minutes to go as Albion took all three points. Brighton were fortunate not to see themselves fall behind after seven minutes. Joel Lynch’s flicked header from Emyr Huws’ corner looked destined for the bottom corner but Jamie Murphy headed clear on the goalline to keep the score at 0-0. Murphy was then a little unfortunate not to fireAlbion ahead at the other end on 27 minutes. Fine work from Beram Kayal saw him win a tackle and then send Murphy away, the wideman beat two Huddersfielddefenders, only to sees his strike flash across the goal face. Brighton were ahead just four minutes later, though, as Zamora bagged his seventh of the season. An excellent breakaway from a Huddersfield corner saw Kayal collect the ball and

Lewis Mason @_LewisMason send Anthony Knockaert clear, before the Frenchman found Zamora and he volleyed home. Nahki Wells should have levelled things up a minute before the interval. Albion failed to clear their lines and Mark Hudson’s header found Wells, who beat Connor Goldson but could only blaze a close-range strike over. That miss did prove costly, though, and the Terriers made it 1-1 two minutes into first half stoppage-time when Bunn headed home Tommy Smith’s pinpoint cross. Albion made a bright start to the second half and so nearly went ahead again on 57 minutes. Knockaert, who was making his home debut, saw a 20-yard curling free kick strike a post and go wide. Knockaert was proving a constant menace for the Huddersfield defence and he bagged a second assist as Brighton went ahead for a second time on 66 minutes. The wideman ran at the Terriers defence before whipping a fine left-footed cross in for substitute Wilson to head home from close range. Albion almost handed Huddersfield a way back into the game three minutes later but Bunn andWells both saw efforts blocked by Albion skipper Bruno. Things got worse for the visiting side with seven minutes left to play when Smith received his second yellow card for a reckless lunge on Kazenga LuaLua. It was allAlbion after that and Andrew Crofts curled a right-footed strike just wide

a minute later. Huddersfield pushed men forward late on and Wells curled a late free kick just over as it ended 2-1 and Albion got back to winning ways at the Amex after three successive home defeats. H u gh t o n fe l t A l bi o n should have been more than a goal to the good at halftime and said: “It was a real blow to concede just before

half-time.At that stage,we’d had three or four counterattacks and we really should have been two or three goals up, even though we were up against a really good footballing side. “I was really disappointed with the goal we conceded, particularly the timing of it. That gave them a lift that they needed, but in the end it was a result that we

thoroughly deserved, even though it was another hardfought one. “Confidence can be a little fragile when you are on a little bit of a bad run, but we got a really good result at Blackburn last week. We have found it a little bit more difficult at home in the last few games and sometimes that can affect confidence, but also, goals change games

and give confidence.” Albion’s next match is at home to Brentford on February 5, with a 7.45pm kick-off. ‘Easy choice’ for Bjordal to join Brighton

Henrik Rorvik Bjordal. Photograph: Paul Hazlewood (BHAFC)

Norwegian winger Henrik Rorvik Bjordal admitted it was an easy choice to join the Seagulls earlier this week. The 18-year-old signed a deal with Albion until June, 2018, after joining from Norwegian side Aalesunds FK, and he will initially be part of Brighton’s under-21 squad. On joining Albion, Bjordal said: “If I was going to leave my former club it would have had to be something special. When I heard about Brighton and their plans

Steve Bailey @SteveBailey67 for me, it was a really easy choice to come here. “It’s a club with a big plan for the future and one that’s fighting near the top of the Championship. All the facilities here means that it’s ready for the Premier League. “I have always followed English football since I was a kid and it’s been a dream of mine to play in England. I have that opportunity now. “Liverpool was my

favourite team growing up, so John Arne Riise was a big player for me. English football is big in Norway, so this was a great chance for me to come here.” Bjordal came through the ranks at Aalesunds and has been a regular in the senior side over the past two seasons, having broken into the first-team aged just 16 in 2013. He made his debut for the club in May, 2013, as the club recorded an emphatic 7-1 win over Lillestrom. His breakthrough campaign came in the 2014 season, when he made a total of 25

appearances. He was ever present in 2015 and has made 60 first-team appearances in three seasons, including 54 in the Norwegian Tippeligaen, scoring four goals. He has also represented Norway at every youth team level from the under-15s to the under-21s. Seagulls manager Chris Hughton said: “I’m delighted to welcome Henrik to the club. He’s an exciting young prospect, a quick player who can play as a winger or attacking midfielder.”

Sidwell another shrewd addition for the Seagulls

The return of Steve Sidwell to Albion appears to be another shrewd piece of business by Seagulls boss Chris Hughton. The recently turned 33-year-old midfielder was a popular figure with Brighton fans during a two-month loan spell from Arsenal in the 2002/03 season. He scored five times in just 12 games, including twice in the final two minutes of a home match with Burnley to rescue a 2-2 draw after Albion had trailed 2-0. Sidwell knows what it takes to get out of the Championship after helping Reading to a 106 point haul when they won the title in 2005/06. Since that season, ten years ago, he has played all of his football in the Premier League, with spells at Chelsea, Aston Villa, Fulham and Stoke since he left the Royals. A frustrating 18 months with Stoke, who he has

played just 13 Premier League games for, will mean theAlbion get a player eager to prove a point. As he said earlier this week, it’s a chance to put himself in the shop window or earn a permanent deal with Brighton. The experience he has will also benefit the squad. Another lively character, like temporary loanee Liam Ridgewell, who joined in January, will also benefit the squad on and off the pitch. On the field, Sidwell’s arrival adds competition to the centre of midfield and

Sidwell knows what it takes to get out of the Championship after helping Reading win the title in 2005/06 will also give Hughton the chance to rest Beram Kayal and Dale Stephens at times. The duo have been in impressive form this season and have both only missed one Championship match all season – the 0-0 draw with Preston in October, when Stephens had a

thigh injury and Kayal was suspended. With Andrew Crofts and Richie Towell also providing options, it’s hard to see Rohan Ince – who has started just one league game this season – and Danny Holla, who has just 11 minutes of Championship action this campaign, getting much game time. It wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see them both exit on loan in the next couple of days. Before the next game with Brentford, a week today, it’s also likely the Seagulls will bring in further additions, with a striker the priority. As the transfer window draws to a close, players who aren’t perhaps playing at clubs will become restless and want game time – which could mean Albion pick up a bargain or a household name to boost them for the run-in. With Gordon Greer and Sam Baldock set to be back for the Brentford game and Gaetan Bong,Liam Rosenior and Uwe Hunemeier also closing in on returns,Albion look like they could well be at full strength for the business end of the season.

Hawks opt against ‘Brighton City’ name Athlete Toby one to

watch for the future

Oliver Stevenson @OStevenson12 Whitehawk Football Club have withdrawn their application to change the club’s name to Brighton City FC. The decision came after 1,458 fans signed an online petition opposing the name change. Last Wednesday, an interview with chairman John Summers was published on the club’s website, where he answered a number of questions from fans. Summers said during the interview that it was part of the Hawks’ business plan to change their name, and that the current one was holding them back. Despite this, Summers confirmed in a statement on Sunday that the club had changed their mind. He said: “The club and its members have had numerous meetings as a club over the past few seasons and it was unanimously agreed that a name change would be required in order to widen the club’s appeal and to embrace the city as a whole. “Our target of an

Whitehawk midfielder Sergio Torres in action average gate of 1,000 regular fans to provide sustainability is still achievable.” A rule change by the FA had forced the club to register their intentions to change their name by December 31st, which the club say made it impossible to refresh discussions with fans. The club further claimed that it was unanimously agreed that they had official support to change the name to ‘Brighton City’, although they were aware that

sentiments may have changed since the club’s profile increased during their recent cup run. Summers said: “I made a point of standing on the terraces with the ultras yesterday at the Chelmsford match to engage with them first hand and they made it abundantly clear to me that, although they understood the need to embrace the city, they dismissed the name ‘Brighton City’ as their preferred choice. “It was good to be

amongst them and listen to their views and I thank them all for their input yesterday. “Nobody should have had any doubts about the club’s aspirations, all of the investors and members had voted for it, however we have listened to the fans. “They have made it very clear to us that if we are changing our name, they prefer other options such as ‘Brighton Whitehawk’ or ‘Brighton East End’, so we will all have a beer together and work to

Harries said: “It is a huge honour to be invited into the Futures scheme and have Nike behind me. I need to now repay that investment

Toby Harries by training hard to reach my goals.” Harries’ career so far has seen him named fastest under-17 in the country. He claimed the UK indoor under-17 200m record when clocking 21.46sec to win the England Athletics Indoor Championships in 2015. He then picked up silver in the 200m, representing England at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa last autumn. Brighton College director of sport Roger Nicholson said: “We are all incredibly proud of what Toby has achieved so far and very excited about what is to come in his career. He has world-class ability but also the right attitude to succeed. He is focused and committed but still willing to learn and be guided.”

Hughton relieved after back-to-back victories By Lewis Mason @_LewisMason Albion boss Chris Hughton wa s r e l i e ve d a f t e r h i s side made it back-to-back Championship wins on Saturday. Goals from Bobby Zamora and substitute JamesWilson were enough to seal a 2-1 Amex success over struggling Huddersfield, after a 1-0 win at Blackburn Rovers the previous week. Prior to the victories, Albion were winless in seven league matches and had also lost three successive home games – to Middlesbrough, Ipswich andWolves – without scoring. H o w e v e r, H u g h t o n was pleased to see his side complete a second consecutive success and said: “When you have that dip and lose games, it’s tough, so I’m really delighted to be back with two wins, and especially a win at home. “We’d lost three in a row at home coming into this,so this

was a big one for us and a big confidence booster.” Transfer window signing Anthony Knockaert made his home debut and gave a manof-the-match performance as he was a constant threat and set up both goals. Hughton was particularly impressed with the former Leicester winger and said: “That’s the reason we brought him in.We know he knows the division but I’m probably more delighted with him as a worker; he works both ways. “Sometimes when you get a gifted player like that, they are very good going one way but not so much the other .We need to be scoring more goals and to get those you need assists. That’s exactly why we brought him in.” Albion re-signed midfielder Steve Sidwell on loan from Stoke City on Monday. They then added Norwegian Henrik Rorvik Bjordal to the under-21 squad on Wednesday, when leftback Adam Chicksen joined Gillingham on a month’s loan.

There are many ways one can consider Sky’s influence on professional football over the past 24 years. I say ‘professional’ because it has done nothing for grassroots football. Why would it? It doesn’t care about it as there is no money to be gained. Notwithstanding the contention among many that football was invented in 1992, the influence on fans, especially travelling fans is immense. And it’s far from good. Rail travel, the preferred method of transport for many to an away fixture, is not cheap in Britain. In fact, in comparison with many parts of Europe, it’s positively eye-watering (it’s ironic, though, that train travel is cheap in Spain, yet away numbers are pitifully small.) However, you can purchase cheaper train tickets, provided it’s done a few weeks in advance. This is where Sky then stick their oar in, and unilaterally change a fixture without any consideration for those supporters (and

Albion’s match with Middlesbrough was on Sky

not much more for any given football club). It would be good, therefore, if Sky, at the very least, were to directly compensate those who had not unreasonably bought their rail tickets. It is, after all, Sky’s responsibility alone that these people are now put out. Is it too much to ask? Um, yes, it seems so. The idea of absolving Sky with ‘well, that’s the chance you take...’ is quite appalling. So, if the apathy about how they ru(i)n football is anything to go by, I’ll not hold my breath. n On air at noon every Saturday, and at 9am every Monday on 97.2FM, online at radioreverb.com, or on DAB.

Knockaert’s quality shone through in home debut Game sponsors can often be knocked for picking the wrong Albion man of the match, but there would have been no complaints over Anthony Knockaert being awarded the gong in his first game at the Amex last Saturday. The 24-year-old came into the club with a reputation for his crossing ability after three years with Leicester City, and in the 2-1 win against HuddersfieldTown,Albion fans got their first taste of what the winger adds to Chris Hughton’s squad. In the first half, Knockaert’s perfectly weighted ball set up Bobby Zamora’s volley for the opener on the half-hour

Bradley Stratton @BradStrat mark and followed up,nine minutes later, with a great solo run where he could have shot, had he not gone for the unselfish option of trying to set up Zamora in a scoring position once again. Wi t h H u d d e r s f i e l d having levelled the score just before the break, Albion found their winner through the French winger once more, getting a low cross into the box, with JamesWilson stretching to get his head on the ball and direct it goal-bound. What Knockaert will bring to the table is

James Wilson heads Albion’s winner Photograph: Angela Brinkhurst consistent delivery, which has been lacking in recent months during Albion’s dry spell in front of goal. As much as you expect strikers to score, they can only do so much work to help create chances for themselves. Knockaert will help bridge the gap.

The Albion’s future is very bright indeed… Dan Tester @BHIndyAlbion

I first started writing about the Albion in 1997 in the Scars & Stripes fanzine. My first article was about Sky TV’s domination of the game and how so much had changed since Murdoch’s millions transformed the game five years earlier. The trajectory has continued unabated In September1997,Albion were undoubtedly at their absolute lowest ebb. The Goldstone was being slowly dismantled and ‘home’ games were being played at Gillingham’s Priestfield in Kent. Steve Gritt was in charge and around 2,500 fans would make the 160-mile round trip to watch abysmal fourth-tier football. It really was the most depressing time to support this great club but those of us who schlepped it up to the,in my opinion, compost heap of England – it certainly wasn’t a garden – we knew we had to do it to save our club. We used to sign players for a set of tracksuits (Gary Hart) and so rarely paid a

fee that any expenditure was met with suspicion, and concern. The three championships and four promotions achieved in 12 seasons at Wit h de a n wer e a n astounding achievement when the financial constraints of the Theatre of Trees are considered; the lack of matchday revenuemaking facilities, the low capacity, no roof over the biggest stand, the badgers… Throughout that time what seemed like a never-ending quest to get permission for Falmer was eventually achieved and the glorious monument to never giving up hope finally rose majestically from the South Downs. Our stadium is amazing, beautifully designed, comfortable and, most importantly, not owned by some DIY magnate based in Lancashire. After over 14 years of stressful campaigning to save the Albion, suddenly we didn’t need to fight any more. For a while, that lack of focus affected many of the old guard as we realised we had to return to being normal football fans once more. It had been so long, many didn’t know how to – initially. Poyet and the play-off

Anthony Knockaert (left) looks like a fantastic acquisition for the Seagulls. Photograph: Angela Brinkhurst disappointments are distant memories and we now have an excellent manager, plus a first-class youth and scouting set-up. Our training ground is revered throughout the land and the club have made some very astute signings that,

perhaps, have surprised a few. Anthony Knockaert looks like a fantastic acquisition, maybe the type of player Solly March will become in a year or two? The future of Brighton & Hove Albion is incredibly

bright and, if we can build on the recent victories while the new players bed in, it could see us mixing it with the English elite next season. Wouldn’t that be something? This is my last column for the Independent. I sincerely hope you’ve all enjoyed

reading my articles as much I have writing them. Up the Albion! Dan Tester is Albion editor of Brighton & Hove Independent. You can also follow him: @DJDanteBrighton

The Albion faithful are still awaiting the possible arrival of a proven scorer

Albion returned to winning ways at the Amex against Huddersfield. Photograph: Angela Brinkhurst

With the transfer window entering its final stages, the Albion faithful still await the possible arrival of that proven goalscorer. My preferred choice, Jordan Rhodes, despite continuedspeculation, hasnot joined either Middlesbrough or Sheffield Wednesday yet. But a former Albion loanee, Steve Sidwell, has re-joined the club, on loan again, this time from Premier League Stoke City. Having previously joined the Albion on loan from Arsenal in 2002, the Gunners eventually sold him to Reading, who went on to achieve top-flight status under Steve Coppell.

Written by Ian Hart

From there, Sidwell’s career took in spells at Chelsea, Villa and Fulham, before his last permanent move to the Potters. For both parties,it’s a good move. Sidwell, at this stage of his career, will probably relish one last challenge at this level and the Albion will certainly benefit from his experience both on and off the field. Saturday’s home win against Huddersfield got the Albion back to winning ways on home turf, after three straight defeats at the Amex. The key for me, and I’m sure many others, is a proven goalscorer, as by getting back

to winning ways the Albion are still very much in the hunt for automatic promotion. Of course, nothing is guaranteed but the acquisition of a proven striker at this level, be it Rhodes or anyone else of that ilk, will certainly give the Albion a huge advantage in the promotion pack. For the kind of money being bandied around,it does represent a big gamble. But then is that not how Albion owner Tony Bloom has made his fortune? After transfer window disappointment on a number of occasions, by Monday at 11pm it might be a different story for the Seagulls this year.
