Circus Street Market remembered in exhibition
>> Continued from page 1 much-valued support and how it has changed their family’s lives. There are fears by members of staff, that a redesign, which could see a decrease in specialist teacher roles but an increase in teaching assistant roles, will change the service forever. Brighton and Hove City Council is determined that the high-standards of the much-valued service will remain. It issued a letter this week to parents, which said there would be an extension to the consultation about the changes, to January 2016. The council said it had no plans to reduce special needs services for
An exhibition of still and moving images will celebrate the history of the Circus Street Market, just weeks after it was demolished. The exhibition, at the Onca Gallery from the November 13-28, is entitled “Hawkers Pick Over Fruit Here”, and is part of CINECITY 2015, Brighton’s annual film festival. Commissioned by Brighton-based dance organisation South East Dance, the exhibition is a collaboration between photographer Zoe Manders (whose work is pictured, left) and filmmakers, straybird. It will explore the generations of Brightonbased families whose lives centred around Circus Street Market in decades gone by. The exhibition will allow visitors to explore the images, sounds, and stories of the Circus Street Fruit and Vegetable Market, which was a thriving workplace for many Brighton families. As the market hall is being demolished, this exhibition of still and moving imagery is a celebration of a way of life that will soon be lost. Zoe Manders, exhibition

photographer, said: “With such a fascinating history, I knew it would be shortsighted not to look back over the colourful past of the Market, and also celebrate it in all its current derelict glory. Circus Street Market has that effect on people – it inspires a potent mixture of both nostalgia and awe.” Becky Edmunds, filmmaker with straybird, said: “I loved interviewing the men who have worked in different ways at the old market site. “Whether as market traders, porters and barrow boys, or as graffiti artists or past control, everyone we spoke to had a unique relationship to the extraordinary space that was Circus Street Market.” The work will remember the history of the site where South East Dance will soon build The Dance Space - a new home for dance in Brighton and Hove. The Dance Space is part of the Circus Street Market development, a mixeduse regeneration project by developers Cathedral Group PLC and partners Brighton and Hove City Council, University of Brighton, and South East Dance.

As an incentive, potential entrants were informed that first prize was £20 cash. Other carrots included a pair of shoes, a swimsuit of their choice, and a haircut for their appearance on television. Review of sixth-forms and colleges Taxi app Uber gets green light could result in ‘mergers or closures’ The city council’s licensing panel announced it would grant a licence for taxi app Uber to operate in Brighton and Hove for one year. The licensing panel announced the decision last Friday, four days after it met to consider the application. The company can now operate its private hire vehicles in the city - but has to abide by the rules set out in the council’s “Blue Book” - which sets out regulations for taxi firms in the city. There were concerns from taxi companies operating in the city that Uber could undercut them, and would not operate by the Blue Book, but Uber

said it would ensure its drivers stick to the rules. But Jason Kitcat, microbusiness ambassador at Crunch Accounting, said: “We’re really pleased that the council have made the right decision on Uber. Brighton is home to so many innovative digital businesses it would have sent the wrong signal to use outdated laws to ban Uber. “New digital platforms like Uber are an opportunity for new and existing businesses to prosper in the city and we hope regulators continue to support those opportunities.” In a statement, Uber said more than 85,000 people in the Brighton and Hove area had downloaded the app.
Brighton and Hove City Council is to carry out a review of the city’s sixthform education, after members of the council’s children and young people and skills committee voted unanimously to examine the post-16 education provision. The Sussex Coast area review - commissioned by the department for Business, Innovation and Skills and referred to as “a restructuring of the further education sector” - could see the “merging” or even “closure” of colleges in the area. The government’s review will include: Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College; City College Brighton and Hove; Central Sussex College, Crawley; Chichester College; Northbrook College; Plumpton College; Sussex Coast College, Hastings; Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne; Worthing
College; Bexhill College; and Varndean College, Brighton. The Sussex Coast is one of seven areas nationwide which will be reviewed. The first began in September and they will be carried out every three months until December 2016. A report laying out the government’s plans stated major reform of post-16 education and training institutions was “necessary” to address the “significant financial pressures on institutions”. The report said there had been a decline in the 16-19 population and a need to “maintain very tight fiscal discipline in order to tackle the deficit”. It added: “We will need to move towards fewer, often larger, more resilient and efficient providers.” Councillor Tom Bewick, chairman of Brighton and Hove’s children and young people committee, said: “We want to make sure that our post-16 education and training offering is the best it can be for the young

people in our region. “This is about balancing the economic needs with the education and training offering.” While the government’s review will focus on further education and sixth-form colleges, Brighton and Hove City Council will include school sixth-forms. Mr Bewick added: “We believe the justification for the inclusion of school sixth-forms is because they are part of the family of provision, a proportion of learners in the city attend these schools and it is
important to include all providers in the debate and dialogue. “On top of this, post-16 provision and outcomes are one of our administration’s four priorities. “One of my actions since election has been to establish an Employer Skills Task Force to explore new approaches which includes increasing the number of apprenticeships and considering ways to improve engagement between the city employers and our schools and academies.”

Pride in our city, all year round Community groups are being invited to bid for a grant to put Pride in our city. For one weekend every year, the city is taken over by a sea of rainbows. The message is clear: whoever you are, wherever you’re from, whatever you do; it does not matter. What matters is coming together with friends and family and celebrating that beautiful but rarely achieved concept equality. From the parade watched by tens of thousands through to the festival in Preston Park through to the street party in St James’ Street, the whole city comes together to mark the LGBT celebration. The addition of other events such as Trans Pride, the Pride Arts and Film Festival, the Pride Dog Show, and Diversity Games means that now, more than ever, Brighton Pride is more inclusive than ever. But the celebration of our city’s LGBT community does not end after that one
weekend in August; it’s a permanent fixture. The organisers of Pride know this - and that’s why some of the money raised at the event has been set aside as a social impact fund to do good in our city. The aim is to support those groups or organisations which need a little helping hand in making a difference in their community. They do not have to be LGBT related; they don’t even have to be directlylinked to Pride (although applicants directly impacted will be favoured). The impact just has to be positive. It might be a residents’ group that wants to create some planters for a communal area. It might be a sports club that wants a new bag of balls. It might be a community organisation that wants to put on an event. However big or small, the only criteria is that it will brighten up people’s lives by the time Pride comes round again next year.

Undercover survey by housing campaigners finds Hospital granted funding for 80% of letting agents in the city don’t display fees long-awaited redevelopment Emily Yates @MsEYates
Members of the Home Sweet Home campaign went undercover in Brighton and Hove last Saturday to find that 80% of letting agents are potentially in breach of consumer rights law. The team of local campaigners covered a total of 67 letting agents, and found that 55 offices may not be complying with the 2015 Consumer Rights Act, which came into force on October 1. Letting agents who do not comply with the new requirements run the risk of council action and a £5,000 fine. Home Sweet Home campaigners assessed the letting agents on their membership of recognised deposit protection and dispute resolution schemes, while checking their offices for the proper display of a full fee schedule. Of the 67 offices visited, only 12 were seen to be compliant on all three
counts. The biggest cause of failure related to fees, with only 15 of the 67 offices keeping a full list of fees in a place where “it is likely to be seen”. With such a high number of letting agents under question, Home Sweet Home members intend to make their next contact by letter - clarifying the changes to the law, and recommending best practice in regard to the “prominent” display of fees. The letters will be handdelivered on their second round of visits in midNovember, along with Home Sweet Home certificates for the 12 agents who passed all three checks. Summer Dean, campaign leader, said: “Our aim is to uphold the letting agents’ legal obligation to provide transparency to tenants regarding the often ‘hidden’ fees they have to pay. Our longer-term goal is to create a more open and accountable renting culture in Brighton and Hove, so that people can start to see rising standards here.” The Home Sweet Home campaign includes local

is growing as fewer people can afford to get onto the housing ladder. councillors, Labour party members, and concerned tenants seeking to help the cause of private renters in Brighton and Hove. They are supported by the broader organisation Movement for Change, which empowers local leaders to campaign on the issues most vital to their communities. Delegates from both Students’ Unions have also been active in the campaign, and are working to produce a comparison table of the agency fees collected. Tracey Hill, lead councillor for Private Rented Sector Housing, said: “The Citizens Advice Bureau reports that housing is the second biggest issue they deal with - especially regarding the private rented sector, which

An ambitious plan has become reality for the Royal Sussex Hospital - after a £484m redevelopment scheme was approved. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust has been celebrating after hearing the treasury is funding two replacement buildings. Matthew Kershaw, chief executive of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “This redevelopment is a once in a generation opportunity to build on the excellent care we currently provide to our patients and truly improve acute health care for patients in Brighton and Hove and across the region. “A great deal of work has gone into bringing us to this point and there is still much more to be done. “The result though, having a better hospital for all our patients and staff in the years to come, is worth all this effort and more.” Building work is set to start in January 2016 and is
scheduled to finish in 2024. All clinical services will be available on site throughout the redevelopment, although some will be given temporary accommodation on site. Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown, said he was ‘delighted’ at the announcement. He said: “This redevelopment will enable the hospital to provide the very best facilities that the patients and staff deserve. This is great news for our city and the wider area. “I would again like to pay tribute to the hard working staff at the hospital for putting together such a strong case.” Warren Morgan, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “The final agreement on funding is very welcome, but incredibly overdue. “We began work on this in 2008, and granted planning permission in January 2012, so it is a shame that patients have been made to wait an extra three years before seeing the end of wards that were built before Florence Nightingale’s time.”

Coastguard volunteers “We’re on the rocks and the tide’s coming in…” Every day, along our coastline stretching from Brighton Marina to Worthing, people make 999 calls to Her Majesty’s Coastguard. Whether it’s someone out of their depth in the sea, or who has fallen off a cliff or is stuck in the mud and unable to free themselves, it’s the Coastguard Rescue Team at Shoreham that will be on hand to help. But HM Coastguard needs volunteers for its rescue teams. Ordinary people doing an extraordinary job, called into action any time, day or night. Graham Easton said: “If you live in a coastal community, you’ll know how vital the Coastguard Rescue Team is to the area. These are people who are prepared to react day or night - often in matters of life and death. What they do matters. And we need more people like them to join.” Members of the Coastguard Rescue Team will be in Shoreham town centre on Coronation Green, each day from November 2-5, between 11am and 1pm, to talk to potential volunteers. More than £2,000 was raised by supporters of the St John Ambulance Brighton Homeless Service during the Cardboard City Sleep Out on Friday. A total of 14 people took on the challenge to see whether they could “survive until sunrise” by sleeping overnight in Brighton. Joining them for the overnight stay in the grounds of Patcham House School was special guest James Bowen, author of ‘A Street Cat Named Bob’. He gave a talk on his experiences as a homeless busker on the streets of London and how his adopted cat Bob helped him turn his life around. As well as hearing James’ story, the participants then had to build their own cardboard shelter for the night and sleep out under the stars. Markie Barratt, Sussex Homeless Service Manager, said: “It really does bring home to you what struggles homeless people face and how important it is to provide support to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.”
Brighton and Hove City Council has received £33,750 funding from the Arts Council to provide and enhance free Wi-Fi to library users. The funding will upgrade the current public Wi-Fi in all libraries to fibre broadband and also bring the Wireless Access Points (WAPs) up to the new standard. These improvements will increase the speed and capacity of the Wi-Fi in each library so that library users get a better service. The work will take place before March next year. Councillor Alan Robins, deputy chair of the Economic Development and Culture Committee said: “Over the years our libraries have evolved from places to borrow books to providing a doorway to the World Wide Web. I’d like to thank our library officers for securing this money which will help us to update and improve our services and continue to offer high speed internet access, which is valued by so many of our library users.”

The newly refurbished auditorium in The Brighthelm Church and Community Centre was unveiled on Friday. The new lighting and sound systems have brought the building back up to date, as a modern conferencing space, theatre, church, and concert venue. Speeches were made by Councillor Pete West, and Sally Barnard, former trustee, whose father was involved in the original construction of the Brighthelm Centre.
The University of Brighton’s School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences has received an award for its commitment to promoting the careers of women. It has received a bronze medal from the Equality Challenge Unit’s Athena SWAN Charter, which encourages efforts to advance women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths, and medicine employment in higher education and research.

Thief ‘sorry’ A thief who broke into a Brighton charity shop to steal a safe containing £350 was not entirely without conscience. For in place of the cast iron strongbox, they had left a drawing of a safe bearing the words: “I O U anything I took and really am sorry”. The safe was discovered missing from the British Heart Foundation’s shop in London Road last Saturday, and police believe the thief struck overnight on Friday (October 23). PC Lucy Goering, of the Brighton Neighbourhood Response Team, said: “This was an unusual burglary in that the offender left an apologetic note, but this was nevertheless a significant loss for the charity concerned and we still need to trace the person responsible.” Anyone with information should call 101, with the reference 325 of 24/10.

Show cancelled A Reeves and Mortimer show at The Brighton Centre has been cancelled after comedian Bob Mortimer underwent a triple bypass operation. The pair were set to perform in the city on December 4, as part of a tour, but it was announced on Wednesday that the comedian would need to rest following the operation. A spokesperson for Bob Mortimer, said: “Bob would like to thank his consultant and all the nursing staff at the hospital for looking after him so well. “He now needs several weeks to fully recover, so unfortunately the first leg of the UK tour will be cancelled. Bob very much hopes to be fit and well enough to perform the second leg in January next year.” Ticket holders should contact their point of purchase for a full refund.

Mr Raw said: “It’s a real honour and privilege to take on this role, I promise to give it my all over the coming years. I don’t underestimate the challenges ahead for us all but I remain excited and ambitious about the enormous potential of the city and the important role of the council in offering civic leadership.” Mr Raw joined the city council in November 2010 and has been acting chief executive since May. He was previously executive director of environment, development and housing for the local authority. His experience includes working for the Mayor for London as director of design, strategy and planning. He has also worked for the Housing Corporation as assistant director of investment, and national housing investment programme manager at HM Treasury. Mr Raw is married with one daughter and his interests include martial arts, Shiatsu massage, cooking, and gardening.
Catherine Bearder, a Liberal Democrat MEP for the South East, is demanding that tougher EU tests on emissions from diesel vehicles are urgently put in place to cut deadly pollution in places like Brighton and Hove. Ms Bearder, said: “Some diesel cars are now emitting four times more pollution than a bus. This is having a disastrous impact on air quality and people’s health in places like Brighton.”

Studio Loo Peter Kyle, MP for Hove, visited Studio Loo, as part of Eco Homes 2015 - which showcased a dozen eco-homes and properties. Once a disused, public toilet on Portland Road dating from the 1920s, interior architect Claire Potter has transformed the space into a fully functional office and studio which she now uses as her workspace. Ms Potter said: “We really believe that industrial buildings, especially small ones, should be reused and saved for the future, and our conversion brings together this ethos with our belief that eco construction and design is the only way forward.” Mr Kyle said: “Everyone knows that I’m a fan of innovation and entrepreneurial ideas as well as creating more housing with lower energy bills and less carbon footprint. So it’s been brilliant to be able to see all these things in action over the Eco Open Houses weekend.” Housing

Whitehawk Library
College building
Dozens of affordable homes will be built on the former site of Whitehawk Library in east Brighton, following permission being granted at planning committee on Wednesday. The development, by the city council itself, is part of its New Homes for Neighbourhoods programme, which is building 500 much-needed new affordable homes on council-owned land. The library has relocated to new premises at the Whitehawk Community Hub in Whitehawk Road. Plans feature two blocks providing 57 flats, including: 10 onebed flats, 33 two-beds and 14 three-beds.
Brighton College was granted permission to build its £40 million sports and science building, by city planners on Wednesday. The proposals, for the Eastern Road school, include a swimming pool and roof-top running track in the new four-storey building. The existing Sports Hall, Chowen and Blackshaw buildings, and the Pavilion, will be demolished to make way for the new building, which will also include a car park, lecture theatre, and classrooms. Construction is scheduled to commence start next summer, with completion in 2018. Nature
Rare butterfly
(Photograph: Neil Hulme)
A project to boost numbers of butterflies and chalk grassland in the South Downs National Park near Brighton has unexpectedly seen the return of the silver-spotted skipper butterfly, once close to extinction across the county. The Brighton Blues project aims to improve and increase areas of rare chalk grassland, which several species of butterfly including the Adonis blue and chalkhill blue, depend on to thrive. Neil Hulme, who works for project partner Butterfly Conservation, said: “In the 1970s the silver-spotted skipper was so rare that its last two locations were a closely guarded secret. It’s wonderful to see them now flying amongst the iconic blue species of the South Downs. Sightings at Anchor Bottom near Upper Beeding, Mill Hill in Shoreham and at Benfield Hill and Waterhall in Brighton and Hove show the first expansion in its range for nearly ten years. “We’ve seen many other insects and plants benefitting from this work, showing that decades of decline in this rich and unique habitat can be reversed with good management.”

Lifeline for Victorian women in Brighton and Hove Louise Peskett @louisepesk
My name is Louise Peskett and I celebrate women’s history in Brighton and Hove by running walking tours, looking at the many brilliant but overlooked women in Brighton’s past. There are so many in fact, I’m going to attempt to squeeze four women into this, my first column… At the bottom of Islingword Road is a modest end-terraced house that wouldn’t especially turn your head. In 1899, however, it was one of the most pioneering medical centres of its time and a
real life-saver for local women. The all-women staffed “Lewes Road Hospital and Dispensary for Women and Children”, as it was called, was set up, according to its 1905 annual report, “to afford to poor women of Brighton… the opportunity of free consultation with Doctors of their own sex”. In these pre-NHS days, access to healthcare was costly. Charitably financed “dispensaries” filled the gap by offering cheap treatment to society’s poorest. But with its focus on women and its all-female staff, this one was radical indeed. An act allowing women to qualify as doctors had only been passed in 1876. Female doctors were few and far

between. In the modestyridden Victorian days of keeping your legs covered and your head down, many women let symptoms go unchecked and illnesses untreated, rather than be examined by a male doctor. The Dispensary managed to unite four of Britain’s most pioneering female doctors. Its co-founder was Dr Helen Boyle, who, arriving in Brighton after working in London’s eastend, was particularly interested in the role played by poverty in women’s mental health. At first hand she’d seen how nervous exhaustion and depression were exacerbated by insanitary conditions and financial hardship. She described the lot of the woman living in working-class areas such as Hanover/Elm Grove as being “neglected and maltreated until… they were turned into the finished product - lunatics”. Only a stone’s throw from the Dispensary, at the top of Elm Grove, was Brighton Workhouse - now Brighton General Hospital - with its austere asylum block
looming over the town. Dr Boyle’s aim was to step in before the female patient ended up there, leaving yet another household in ruins and children deprived of their mother. The Dispensary was so successful, space was found in 1905 for in-patients at a premises in Roundhill Crescent. This lead, in Dr Louisa Martindale and Dr Helen Boyle 1920, to further premises in New Church practice in Hove with Dr Road, the eventual Lady Boyle in 1898. Brighton-based GP, Chichester Hospital for Louisa Martindale, Women and Children with Dr Nervous Diseases. This is among whose many other included now the Aldrington Day achievements Hospital where a few weeks pioneering the use of X-rays ago Dr Boyle’s achievements in cancer treatment - was a were recognised by the visiting medical officer. Vice-president was none unveiling of a blue plaque. Dr Boyle went on to other than Dr Elizabeth the become the Royal Sussex Garrett-Anderson, Hospital’s first female first woman to qualify as psychiatrist and co-founder a surgeon in Britain and of mental health charity, founder in 1872 of London’s New Hospital for Women, MIND. The Dispensary’s co- now named after her. Today most of us don’t founder was Dr Mabel Jones, who’d opened a GP’s give a thought to whether
the doctor we see is male or female. But, for women, the struggle to enter the medical profession was hard-fought. The Lewes Road Dispensary with its help for poor local women proved the huge contribution that women could make. Women’s Hospitals of Brighton and Hove by Val Brown, published by Hastings Press, goes into the numerous women’s hospitals in the city in more detail and is a great read.

‘Space-age’ solar-powered bins Two sites in the city identified causing problems in the Deans as potential county rubbish tips Stuart Fry @journalistworks Rottingdean residents have taken to online forum Streetlife to voice their anger at the increasing litter problem. Brighton and Hove City Council spent the summer tackling ground pollution by installing solar-powered BigBelly bins that use energy to compact waste to an eighth of its size. Neighbours on Streetlife suggest the unorthodox bins are being passed unnoticed and are infrequently emptied. There are also fewer bins throughout the village since BigBelly’s were installed. Tracy Holland, owner of MadWaxCandles in the High Street, said: “We used to have a big bin opposite outside the old NatWest building, but now we just have one small bin which is useless, as everything just flies out of it, and a spaceage thing which doesn’t even look much like a bin.” Ms Holland has personally witnessed
people littering outside of her shop but added: “I think people will use bins if they’re available but the ones we’ve got are not very obvious or too small.” Councillor Anthony Delow of Rottingdean Parish Council said: “We were not consulted at all by Brighton Council about the solar-powered bin in the High Street and it was put in the wrong place, as buggies are now unable to pass.” Brighton and Hove City Council responded by saying: “There are more than 1,000 litter bins located throughout the city, which makes it impractical to consult on each one’s location. But we will conduct a site visit to Rottingdean and move the bin if it is causing an obstruction. “ The controversial BigBelly’s are causing a similar issue for businesses in Longbridge Avenue of nearby Saltdean. Alan Pockney, owner of The Gift Shop, has a BigBelly outside of his shop and said: “Three bins were

removed from this stretch and replaced by an allsinging, all-dancing solarpowered bin. “People often sit and eat on the bench just outside my shop but they don’t use the solar-powered bin afterwards and just chuck their rubbish on the ground. So, every morning I am the road sweeper outside my shop.” The city council has defended its decision and said: “More rubbish can be held in a BigBelly bin than a standard receptacle, which necessitates fewer collections and therefore more time for our staff to perform duties including litter picking and street cleansing. The BigBelly bins are marked as litter bins and they have been used successfully in other areas of the city.”
Sites around the city could become rubbish tips as local councils set out plans for future waste treatment sites around the county. Two sites in the city, Hangleton Bottom and Sackville Coal Yard, are being considered as potential locations for new waste facilities. While no decisions have been taken to put waste facilities on either site they are considered as suitable areas and have been saved for waste use since the 2006. Cllr Gill Mitchell, lead member for environment and sustainability at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “Along with every local authority in the country, Brighton and Hove is planning for the city’s potential waste management needs over the next 20 years. “Waste management is an area where technology is improving all the time and, where waste facilities are
required, this is helping to hugely reduce the impact on sites and surrounding areas.” The move comes as East Sussex County Council, Brighton and Hove City Council, and the South Downs National Park Authority say the county needs to build five new major sites or 15 new smaller sites to address a shortfall in its waste treatment services. Areas near Bexhill, Crowborough, Eastbourne, Hailsham, Hastings, Heathfield, and Newhaven are also being considered as potential sites under new plans to be put forward to government next year. The councils say sites on the list have been chosen to avoid impacts on environmentally-sensitive areas and none of them fall within the South Downs National Park. None of the sites are being considered for landfill. Sites on the list have been chosen to avoid impacts on environmentally sensitive areas and none of them fall
within the South Downs National Park. The councils are now asking residents to have a final say on the plans in a public consultation launched on Wednesday (October 27). You can take part in the consultation on the council’s website consult. eastsussex.gov.uk/
Consultation A series of drop-in sessions are being held across East Sussex to allow people to find out more about potential sites for waste recycling and recovery. The Brighton and Hove sessions are: ■ Wednesday, November 11 - 10am-2pm, Brighton Customer Service Centre, Bartholomew House, Bartholomew Square ■ Tuesday, November 17 - 10am-2pm, Hove Town Hall, Customer Service Centre, Hove Town Hall, Norton Road

Business Hotel plans for derelict West Street nightclub A run-down and longneglected area of the city is set to be transformed into “Brighton’s equivalent of the Ramblas in Barcelona”. The owners of 78 West Street (formerly Hedkandi and Tru Nightclub) and 79 West Street (Walkabout, Smart Brighton Beach and Backpackers Hostels), have master-planned the transformation of semiderelict block close to
the seafront in Brighton’s Old Town. London and Regional Properties and Smart Space unveiled plans to build new hotels at the site, with the ground floor area spanning between 78 West Street and 7/8 Middle Street including a hotel reception and high quality restaurant. The disused nightclub at West Street, another derelict night-club, and

a former hotel on Middle Street, will be replaced by “high-quality buildings”. The proposals are set to transform South Street “into a safe and attractive secondary thoroughfare, with entrances and windows to a new hotel and a small block of four apartments”. The architect firm behind the proposal is Morgan Carn Partnership, which masterminded the recently approved Hanningtons Lane, Puget’s Lane, and Brighton Square proposals to regenerate The Lanes and North Street. John McLean, director at Morgan Carn Partnership said: “This is tremendously exciting for our city. West Street is a huge disappointment and lost opportunity. Thousands of visitors and local residents flock to the seafront from the station and their first impression is an inhospitable, car dominated street spoilt by some awful buildings.
An artist’s impression of the proposed development on West Street
“West Street suffers from a tacky image and many of the current uses are a magnet for antisocial behavior, with the dead frontages created by the nightclubs and amusement arcades contributing nothing to the quality of the public realm. “This is the primary route between the station, seafront and the eagerly awaited i360 and should be Brighton’s equivalent of the Ramblas in Barcelona, a wonderful, vibrant, tree-
lined avenue with street performers and alfresco dining, an attraction in itself. We are hoping to upgrade the pavements and introduce trees and street furniture as part of the proposals and encourage neighbouring landowners to do the same.” Afshin Foulad, director at Smart Space, said: “This is a burning aspiration that we have been working towards since our acquisition of the site and we hope will

provide a catalyst for the future enhancement of West Street and the Old Town. We look forward to discussing our ideas with local stakeholders and the general public in due course.” For more information, and to get involved with the consultation process, a public exhibition is to be held in the former Hedkandi bar to the south of West Street, opening today (Friday) from midday until 2pm, Saturday from midday until 2pm, Wednesday (November 4) from 4pm until 7pm, and Thursday (November 5) between 8am and 10am.
Troll’s Pantry is grand finalist in Churchill Square H&M closed until Montpelier Villa FC secures Sussex Food and Drink Awards spring during major refurbishment sponsership with OptaNet
The Troll’s Pantry team; Paul Clark, Chloe Smith, and Caspian Armani
Three Sussex street food vendors were announced as grand finalists in the Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2016 at a special event held in Lewes on Sunday. The Troll’s Pantry from Brighton was declared a finalist, alongside Boca Loco from Arundel, and Jah Jyot Punjabi Street Food from Southwater. Hilary Knight, co-director of Natural Partnerships CIC,
organisers of the awards, said: “This is the first ever Sussex Street Food of the Year competition, which we created to celebrate our tenth birthday - but it has proved so popular with the public and our brilliant Sussex street food vendors that we will continue it as part of the annual awards next year.” The Sussex Food & Drink Awards is held on January 28, 2016.
The second phase of improvement works are now underway to the façade of Churchill Square Shopping Centre. H&M and Sole Trader are undergoing refurbishment to bring the appearance of the stores in line with the rest of the frontage. H&M is closed for trade to allow for the shopfront improvements and an extension to the store to be built. Sole Trader remains open while undergoing major alterations to the front of the store. Last year’s refurbishment works saw new doubleheight glass shopfronts on the Western Road frontage for existing stores BHS, Burtons, and Dorothy Perkins, and the creation of a 32,000 sq. ft Topshop and Topman.
Mark BuchananSmith, centre director for Churchill Square said:, “New work to the front of the centre is progressing well. Once finished Churchill Square will have a smart new look fitting for a city like Brighton.” The scheduled completion dates for the works are November 2015 for Sole Trader and Spring 2016 for H&M.
The future looks bright for local football club Montpelier Villa after securing a threeyear sponsorship and partnership deal with OptaNet, Brighton’s local internet services provider. OptaNet will use this platform to raise awareness of its business data and telephony products and services. The OptaNet logo will appear on all match day kit, until the end of the 2017/2018 season. Nicholas Sheppard, sales and marketing manager at OptaNet said: “We immediately recognised similarities between our two organisations in terms of growth ambitions. Montpelier Villa FC have a compelling vision, and as a local business we are only too happy to assist them in
achieving their goals.” Gary Pleece, Montpelier Villa FC chairman, said: “We are delighted to have signed this deal with forward-thinking local business OptaNet. “This is the first season in the county league for both the first and youth teams and the club are really pleased that such an innovative and respected local business is supporting The Villa at an exciting time of expansion and growth.” Founded in 1991, Montpelier Villa FC is one of the largest and most established football clubs in Sussex, playing home games at the Falmer Sports Complex. The Regency Restaurant is the oldest seafood restaurant on Brighton seafront. The Restaurant is a Grade II listed building and was originally build as the palatial seaside home by Thomas Coutts the founder of Coutts Bank in the early part of the 18th century, so that his wife could eat her favourite dish of King Prawns looking out at the sea. When Mr Coutts died, leaving his wife Harriet the richest woman in Europe, she remarried the Duke of St Albans and they lived at the house throwing lavish parties by the seaside. It was turned into a restaurant in 1930. The building still maintains all its original features.

Quality food; produce; service These three things are what have been driving the Shepherd and Dog and her new young, enthusiastic team over the past year and a half. The results speak for themselves. The Shepherd and Dog has been revitalised and reimagined under the leadership of the management team into one of the most iconic destination pubs in Sussex. This team is constantly breaking new ground and trying to test people’s conceptions of what a country pub is or should be. Beer is experiencing a bit of a renaissance at the moment and the pub is riding on this craft beer wave. The 12 headed copper beer tap that dominates the top bar as you enter immediately informs you that this place is doing something special and that extra attention should be paid to some of these
rare, one off beers that are constantly being sourced from both the UK and abroad. Even beer from as far-flung as New Zealand has made an appearance on this alter to hop and grain! But it’s not all about the beer - food quality and choice is just as important. From classic pub lunches to fine cuisine, the Shepherd and Dog has something to suit all tastes. The passion and drive in the kitchen comes from using locally sourced produce cooked fresh to order with an ever-changing seasonally based menu. The Shepherd and Dog is now taking bookings for Christmas parties so do not hesitate to call them on 01273857382 and check out the menu’s on their website shepherdanddogpub.co.uk

My Life Story head to The Hope, Brighton, on Friday, October 30, with a new single ‘24 Hour DeFlowerer’. The pop group are best known for its tracks ‘12 Reasons Why I Love Her’, ‘Sparkle’ and ‘Strumpet’, which hit the UK top 40 charts back in the ’90s. The band’s music was described by Melody Maker at the time as: “Satisfying escapism. Taking life’s mundanities and making them magical.” After a six-year hiatus, the band reformed in 2006 with a Best Of album and are now bringing out their first new release in 15 years. The ‘24 Hour DeFlowerer’ single will be released on Sunday, November 1, and will make its live debut on this tour, where fans can hear the new track for the very first time. ‘24 Hour DeFlowerer’ is classic My Life Story wordplay with a style that’s similar to their past hits. Last year, rock magazine NME cited My Life Story as one of the greatest lost bands of the ’90s. Jake Shillingford, My Life Story songwriter and front man, said: “In the past few years I’ve moved into writing for movies and
TV (with My Life Story tour guitarist Nick Evans) and as much as it satisfies my orchestral and filmic bent, I don’t have much time to write spikey threeminute pop songs anymore!” He continued: “So I sat down with my trusty old 12-string and all these twisted couplets started to fire out, a sort of machine gun of vitriolic social commentary. I felt like I’d been reborn.” Jake added: “While the orchestral lineup has been indefinitely rested, I felt desperate to get out and air the new material, to the most patient and loyal fans on the planet. The new songs and sound capture the New Jake Shillingford Wave influences that I grew up with. 7.30pm at The Hope Despite the Baroque Pop and Ruin, Queens Road, and Britpop tags that were Brighton. Tickets for the gig cost hung on us in the early ’90s, the heart of My Life £13.20. BREMF presents the first surviving opera by a woman Phil Hewitt @BrightonIndy It won’t just be semidramatised. It will be fully staged - a landmark production for the Brighton Early Music Festival. “We haven’t done anything like this before!” says co-artistic director Deborah Roberts who is also musical director for La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall’Isola d’Alcina by Francesca Caccini, the first surviving ‘opera’ by a woman composer. Commissioned in 1625 as an entertainment in music, dance and drama by the ruling regent of Tuscany, Archduchess Maria Maddalena, it is performed only very rarely now - an omission Deborah is delighted to make good. Featuring Anna Devin soprano; Denis Lakey counter tenor; Nick Pritchard tenor; and young artists in smaller roles, it will be staged in The Old Market on Thursday,
in fact had a very secular upbringing, very much at the court in Florence. And when she was taken on in court in her own right, she became the highest paid musician in the court. She was paid more than a lot of bigger names at the time. “This piece, La Liberazione is all that survives of her theatrical work, but was by no means all that she had a part in. There were things going on every week, and the music would have been composed by several court composers, but there were quite a few pieces she wrote herself. She did in fact write a large number of pieces on her own – 16 stage works. They wouldn’t have been called operas at the time. The word Francesca was opera wasn’t used then. They would paid more have been called than a lot of bigger ballo in musica, names at the time” dance in music, and they would end with Convents were great a whole series of dances.” A book of Francesca’s centres of musical learning, but Francesca songs survives, plus La November 5, at 8pm and also on Sunday, November 8, at 3pm and 7.30pm. “We do actually know a good deal about Francesca Caccini,” Deborah says, “not about her personality so much, but about her life. “She was the daughter of Giulio Caccini who was based in Florence. I think he had two daughters who sang, and his wife was also a singer. Francesca was brought up with a full professional training. She didn’t just sing, but she could play just about any instrument she tried. She had the sort of education you would normally expect a boy to get. A lot of girls actually were educated musically by going into a convent.
Liberazione - and that’s it. “If you look at what survives more generally in early music, sometimes works are published and get into libraries and then they survive, but in a lot of cases the music wasn’t written on the kind of paper that survives or, if it was written on betterquality paper, the paper might get used again. There are a lot of cases of sheet music ending up behind paintings! But La Liberazione was actually published – because it was written for quite an important occasion, the visit of a Polish prince that had just won an important battle.” Quite aside from its historical significance, the piece commends itself for its extraordinary music: “Alcina is this beguiling sorceress who lures all these men to her island, and when she gets fed up with them, she turns them into plants. “Hers is the most beautiful musical style, but

then you have got the good witch who sings in a very different musical style, much more forthright, much more early baroque. And then you have got a chorus of singing plants who are all these trapped men!” Tickets for this show cost £16 to £25.
An imaginative adventure of immense proportions NOW OPEN
Little Soldier are joined on the Brighton Dome stage by Stephen Harper to re-enact one of the most influential works of world literature; The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha on Thursday, November 5, at 7.30pm. Spokeswoman Emma Robertson said: “Their mammoth task would be easier if any of the following were true: they’d read the book, had enough actors or heeded the warnings of Terry Gilliam. “Here, the company contrast the intimate with the epic, with Little Soldier’s combination of languages with live music and physical comedy, presenting an imaginative and provocative adventure of immense proportions, to be taken with a pinch of salt – and a handlebar moustache. Little Soldier Productions co-artistic director Mercè Ribot said: “Taking on Don Quixote has felt a bit like deciding to have a baby. Were we prepared to take on that challenge and responsibility? Could we afford it? It was daring even for an established company,
but for us, when we are still quite new, was it just madness? “And of course, the logic told us not to do it, at least just yet… but the heart speaks differently, and has its own particular desires. Ours set us a challenge which very much mirrors that of Don Quixote the dreamer, the madman who jumps on his steed and sets off for the unknown. “He doesn’t have much aside from his epic conviction, incredible passion and relentless persistence. Now in the early delirium of parenthood, we invite everyone to celebrate the joy and madness with us, the ‘there is never a right time’; the ‘we’ll do it when we grow up’… We are aiming for the moon and won’t settle for less. This is Little Soldier.” Little Soldier is an award winning international touring and producing theatre company based in London. Since their first show in 2010 the performers encourage crosscultural artistic collaborations. They use physical comedy, devising techniques and live music to produce funny

Towering hooks, summer grooves, and emotive lyrics
Having sold more than 100,000 tracks on iTunes on the back of a devoted following on social media, COASTS embark on a major tour this October, following the release of their self-titled debut album. They play Brighton’s Concorde 2 on Friday, October 30. Spokesman James Heward said: “The Bristol-rooted quartet’s already enviable list of accomplishments includes a rapturous reception at a packed tent in Coachella; a series of London shows, which expand in size every time that they return; an
invite to perform on Made in Chelsea; and even a famous fan in the shape of Jake Gyllenhaal. “It only takes a cursory spin of their debut to demonstrate that it delivers upon the band’s undoubted potential. It’s an anthemic collection of towering hooks, huge summer grooves and emotive lyrics, which are infused with a visceral energy inspired by their shared love of dance music.” Tickets cost £13 (plus booking fee). BRIGHTON AND HOVE INDEPENDENT
Wow what a night! THE 2015 Sussex Women in Business Awards was a tremendous success with over 270 attending the magnificent gala finals at the Cavendish Hotel, Eastbourne - truly glittering red carpet event which was filled with glamour, super food, wonderful entertainment, amazing networking, much elation and huge accolades and standing ovations for the 2015 winners. This year’s Overall Business or Business Woman of the Year Award was won by the wonderful Agora Fertility Clinic, Brighton and the Lifetime Achievement Award went to the amazing Ann Sandeman. See list to the right for all the winners and the highly commended finalists. The Sussex Women in Business Awards stretch across the whole of the county and they are staged especially to celebrate the success of today's very best females at work. Whether we like it or not, many companies today still remain male-dominated despite the obvious progress that has been made over the years to change that. These awards seek to highlight the best women in business or the best businesses owned or co-owned by women and from the number of entries we received this year and the massive interest shown, they are set to be fixed in the Sussex calendar for many years to come. As we looked through the hundreds of nominations it made us realise the talent, success and sheer determination of so many women across Sussex. We only have to look at our eight local East Sussex MPs five of whom are female. Look at our police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne. And there are so many more examples we could name across the county of Sussex. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sarah Hopewood the guest speaker, Lynsey Bartlett from Heart FM who was a super host, the Cavendish Hotel for an excellent evening, Accord AV for your superb set-up, Paperlane for the amazing decor on the night, Andy Rose and Zach Le Cheminant of Mad Fish Vintage Wave, The Vox Beatles Tribute Band, Progress for the video shoot and the Identity Group for the banners, signs and event programmes. Last but not least you can acquire those fab photos taken in the lobby by Light Trick Photography at: lighttrick.co.uk/wiba ***Go to www.sussexwomeninbusiness awards.com to see the photos and the video. Don't forget to get your copy of your local newspaper on the 6th November for more pictures of the 2015 winners.

Silverstone Classic gears up for 2016
After the huge success of this year’s recordbreaking Silver Jubilee extravaganza, the 2016 Silverstone Classic will continue to set the gold standard in global historic racing festivals. Staged at the home of British motor sport, next year’s Silverstone Classic will run from July 29-31, with tickets going on sale on Thursday, November 12. The glittering 25th anniversary blockbuster confirmed the Classic’s coveted status as the
World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival with record grids, record track parades, record numbers of car club displays plus, for the first time, a record attendance of more than 100,000 visitors. Building on that spectacular success, even more ambitious plans are already well advanced to ensure that next summer’s three-day Classic is even bigger and even better. The packed race programme will again comprise all of Europe’s
premier retro racing series including everpopular grids for the FIA Masters Historic Formula 1 Championship, Super Touring, and Pre ’66 GTs. Added to these established fan-favourites will be a very special CanAm showdown to mark 50 years since the birth of the legendary North American-based sportscar championship back in 1966. More exciting grids are yet to be announced, along with the key motoring milestones that will be honoured in 2016 by the unprecedented number of car clubs attending with special displays and evocative track parades. The live music line-up will also be confirmed in the coming weeks. Nick Wigley, event director, said: “With Status Quo topping the bill and so much happening both on and off the famous Grand Prix circuit, our stunning Silver Jubilee will be a hard
act to follow. Every year, however, the Silverstone Classic just gets bigger and better, and next July we will raise the bar again. "This really should be the
first date you put in your new 2016 diaries!” Ticket details - including Early Bird savings for those booking immediately
- will be available soon. In the meantime, a full report of the 2015 recordbreaker can be found on the official website. Visit: SilverstoneClassic.com

DRIVERS BAFFLED BY TECH
Modern cars are outsmarting their owners, according to new research that flies in the face of studies suggesting car buyers want plenty of advanced technology. A survey of 1,000 car owners, carried out by BookMyGarage.com, found that 73 per cent of people don’t understand how to use all the hightech gadgets in their car. That comes despite 54 per cent saying they bought their car on the strength of all the technology it featured. Tyre pressure monitoring systems, cruise control, stabilitycontrolandparkingsensors are among the facilities that have put drivers’ heads in a spin. Of the many technologies available to them, 45 per cent of the drivers questioned said they regularly use between three and four. Almost one in five people only use one or twoofthedriveraidstheircar boasts. According to the survey, cruise control was the gadget most likely to cause confusion – and therefore gets left

instant reactions of the ondemand xDrive four-wheel drive system, the baby BMW feels absolutely onpoint. The 120d xDrive has far more grip and traction than torque, so even really brutal treatment can only cause it to step out of line very slightly. But the ability to shift the car from an understeering attitude to a neutral, balanced and incredibly poised one, just using the power – thank you, 50:50 weight distribution – is intoxicating.
First Drive: BMW 120d xDrive Facts at a glance BMW 120d xDrive
Engine: Four-cylinder diesel producing 182bhp and 295lb/ft. ■ Transmission: Six-speed manual driving the front wheels. ■ Performance: Top speed 135mph, 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds. ■ Fuel economy: 67.3mpg. ■ Emissions: 110g/km. ■
A combination of hatchback boot, a gutsy but efficient engine and four-wheel drive comes dangerously close to everyday perfection, writes Matt Kimberley, Press Association Motoring Writer What’s new? The times are a'changing for the 1 Series, and along with a neater, prettier face with standard LED daytime running lights there is a general upgrade in terms of equipment. Climate control is now standard across the range, as is a 6.5-inch integrated screen at the top of the centre console. There are new engines with three,
four and six cylinders, with efficiency figures as impressive as 83mpg and 89g/km. Looks and image The 1 Series hatchback is a car that, ever since its original launch more than a decade ago, has struggled to find a look that really works. The previousgeneration Coupe nailed it, but there's Good News.
The revisions to the front and rear styling give the new hatchback a much greater presence and the ability to hold gazes much better than before. That's ominous for this car's rivals, because if it sells even better than its hugely popular predecessor, it will take the compact premium sector by storm. Space and practicality
This isn't a wholesale change from the outgoing 1 Series so you'll still be quite short of legroom behind a six-foot driver. The long door pockets are split into compartments capable of carrying all sorts of items, which is useful because the cup holders ahead of the gear lever are a bit too crammed in towards the console to be ideal.
Little inserts can turn those into coin trays instead. Behind the wheel Mechanically, the 1 Series feels absolutely sublime. From the beautifully damped rocker motion of the gear lever to the seamless action of the eight-speed transmission itself, through accurate and precise steering and the
Value for money This has to be called a case of getting what you pay for. The 120d xDrive is good enough to justify its price. It's exactly the sort of car that will do everything that you ask, and do it well. It's not every day you drive home in something economical, fun to drive, capable in wet and snowy conditions and with a top-drawer premium feel. That's a lot of ticked boxes at any price. This car summed up in a single word: Mighty If this car was a…: Jack of all trades, it would be outstandingly talented enough to even worry a master or two…
