Black alert: Royal Sussex A&E warning to public R o ya l S u s s e x C o u n t y Hospital issued a black alert this week as staff struggled to cope with an “exceptionally busy” A&E department. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust, which also runs the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, said there were not enough beds to meet the demand – with long waiting times for patients. The alert triggers a response where doctors, nurses, health care assistants and managers work to increase the number of patients being discharged. Sherree Fagge, chief nurse at the trust, said: “The staff response has been superb, including staff from other areas of the hospital who have come to join the emergency department teams. We are confident that we are keeping patients

safe, but it is a very tough environment for staff to work in at the moment. “We ask the public to use A&E appropriately and to use the many alternative services available if they do not require emergency treatment.” The alert was downgraded to a red alert on Thursday, which means the hospital is still under pressure – very few beds free for patients. The trust said all patients who do have to wait are seen by a clinician within 20 minutes of arriving at the hospital. G a r y Pa l m e r, f r o m workers’ union the GMB, said: “There are continued cuts and under funding of the health service.Spending 12 to 20 hours in A&E is frighteningly becoming the norm. The fact that staff are increasingly under pressure to provide the marvellous service they do means that cracks are going to appear in the service they deliver.” The trust is preparing for

intent and is currently on police bail. Dr Tom Scanlon, director of Public Health for Brighton and Hove, said: “We are working closely with the police, Public Health England and our partners in sexual health services on this matter. I would encourage anyone with concerns relating to this individual to contact their local sexual health services. “HIV is a serious condition, and there are other sexually transmitted infections which can be acquired during unsafe sex. “Early diagnosis and treatments are available and the message of safe sex with the clear and consistent use of condoms remains as

Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove, has set up a new political website this week: The Argument. He said the site would give “the centre-left” a forum to discuss where his party has gone wrong in recent years. Launching the site, he said: “Labour needs to disagree without being disagreeable. Today I’m launching a political journal to help us do that.” He added:“We will play a role in re-establishing the centre left as the driving force in British politics. “Imposing this contract will seriously undermine the ability of the NHS to recruit and retain junior doctors in areas of medicine with the most unsocial hours, where there are already staffing shortages.”

Council’s new plan to fight homelessness

Building new homes is a ‘top priority’ for the city

Labour wants to eradicate rough sleeping by 2020 Bex Bastable @BexBastable When the Labour Group took the helm of Brighton and Hove City Council last year, one of their policies was “to make sure noone has to sleep rough in Brighton and Hove by 2020”. But a report to the housing and new homes committee, which meets on Tuesday, says the issue of rough sleeping in the city has become “more acute”. In 2014/15 services worked with 775 people, and in November,a snapshot of a single night estimated there were 78 people sleeping rough in Brighton and Hove. Th e c o u n c i l i s n ow working on a Draft Rough Sleeping Strategy - and launching a consultation to find out the views and experiences of local people,

service providers, and the homeless. Its strategy aims to: prevent homelessness; give rapid assessment when people are living on the street; improve the health of the homeless; to make the city safe; and create pathways to independence for homeless people. There is talk of a permanent assessment centre being set up, with a number of temporary beds, to allow local services to assess rough sleepers in a stable environment. Then, individual multiagency plans will be created for each rough sleeper, outlining who is responsible fo r t h e p e r s o n ’ s c a r e , and outlining the client’s housing options “to allow them to make informed choices about their future”. There are also plans for new eight-bed hostel for older homeless people

with complex needs - with £569,000 funding secured from the Homes and Communities Agency. Cllr Clare Moonan, lead member for rough sleeping, said: “The issue of people sleeping rough has become more acute with a visibly increased presence on the streets. Most importantly, this has a negative impact on the individual’s life chances. The street is a very vulnerable place to be. Rough sleeping also affects the city’s reputation and adds costs to public services and business. “Homelessness and rough sleeping could happen to many of us with little warning, from the loss of a job or a relationship breakdown for example. These difficult times can be compounded if people have other needs such as mental health, addiction and other vulnerabilities.

“ Th e c i t y ’ s c u r r e n t approach to rough sleeping is being re-assessed in partnership with all groups and organisation providing services, the wider community and with commissioners. We have used the thoughts and ideas of many partners shared at our Rough Sleeping Summit in December and earlier consultation. We have also looked at research carried out with those who are sleeping rough, or have previously slept rough, to develop this draft strategic plan. Please help us make sure we have identified the correct priorities and actions to deliver our vision: To make sure no-one has the need to sleep rough in Brighton and Hove by 2020.” The consultation opens on March 16. A ‘gentle man’ who will be sorely missed The death of much-loved community champion Chris Cooke shocked the city this week - and has led to calls for a permanent memorial in his honour. Mr Cooke, 48, died in the Royal Sussex County Hospital on Monday, after a fire broke out at his home in Essex Place on Montague Street on Saturday. He was a well-known LGBT campaigner and headed up the Rainbow Fund’s fundraising subcommittee. He was also involved with a range of residents’ groups, most recently starting Kemptown in Bloom. A joint statement, released by city councillors Karen Barford, Daniel Chapman and Adrian Morris, read: “We are deeply saddened about the death of our friend Chris Cooke. He was a gentle man and a gentleman. As a dedicated local campaigner Chris focussed on LGBT and community issues, which were close to his heart. He stood as a local council candidate in 2011 and was always a great support for the three of us over the years. “Chris was very active on Facebook and an invaluable s o u r c e o f i n fo r m at i o n about community events.

Two days before the tragic fire he posted on Facebook encouraging people to join a new group called Kemptown in Bloom. Chris adored wild flowers and organised beautiful displays several years ago. His friends have suggested raising funds to sow seeds in his memory to commemorate two of his loves in his life.Wild flowers and the community. “In addition to this a permanent memorial is needed to remember Chris. Something that will represent his inexhaustible spirit of passion and generosity. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.” Warren Morgan, leader of the council, said: “Chris was someone I’ve known for years, so it was a real shock to hear it was him that had been injured in Saturday’s fire. Chris’s loss will be felt across the city, but most keenly in St James’s Street, Kemptown and the LGBT community. The best thing people can do in memory of Chris is get involved, speak up and work for their community as he did for so many years.” Paul Kemp, director of Brighton Pride, said: “Chris Cooke was a great believer in

community and fought hard to make St James Street a better place for everyone to live whether straight or gay. While others talked Chris would pick up the telephone and get things done. He made a unique contribution to the wider community in St James Street and will be sadly missed.” Geoffrey Bowden, a former Green councillor, said: “I’ve known Chris for a long time.In 2011,Chris was on the Labour ticket standing against me but although we ended up as political

rivals, it did not interfere with our friendship. After I was elected we used to meet once a month for lunch, to talk about community issues. Most recently I was elected to the Friends of Queen’s Park, where Chris had been the treasurer. It was a passion of his.” Mr Cooke’s sister has this week suggested a memorial at Queen’s Park to celebrate his life, and Mr Bowden said details would soon be released on this. He added: “He won’t be forgotten that’s for sure.”

Brighton PC sacked for misconduct A police officer has been dismissed without notice after it was found that he was guilty of accessing computer systems to spy on his ex-wife and girlfriend. PC Forrest Knight, 48, of Brighton, was based at the force’s Lewes headquarters. He appeared before a Sussex Police gross misconduct panel on Wednesday. The panel heard how PC Knight had been under “considerable stress” following the breakdown of his marriage, when he accessed the force’s computer systems in March 2014. He claimed to have done so to input information about contacts associated with his estranged - now divorced - wife, and believed that his doing so was lawful. He was given advice on the first occasion, but continued to access the systems with searches connected with his private life. InApril last year,he made a false report to Sussex Police that his then partner was a “cause for concern” as she had failed to respond to his text and phone contact. He then went on to access this record on the force’s system, noting her car had been caught on a roadside camera.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry, who sat on the panel, said: “Despite b e i n g wa r n e d t h at t h e action he was taking was not authorised, PC Knight continued to access systems drawing himself deeper into the trouble that was entirely of his own making. “We accept that he was under pressure in his private life, but he had shared this with force and was receiving the support of his colleagues. However, the panel felt that his actions did amount to gross misconduct and he has been dismissed from Sussex Police.”

Pomegranate: superfood or fad? The name Pomegranate is derived from the Medieval Latin Pomum meaning apple and granatum meaning seeded. ABOUT The Pomegranate is a deciduous tree from the family Lythraceae that grows up to 8m high with fruit from September until February then from March until May in the North and southern Hemispheres. This tree has spiny branches as protection, large glossy leaves and very bright red flowers which produce fruit with a tough reddish skin. Dependant on size containing upto 1400 seeds which vary In colour from almost white through vibrant red to purple colouration of seeds can be caused by how ripe the fruit is. Each seed is encased in a very moist white pith. The pith and outer seed case have to be removed as it is inedible. You

can easily remove by cutting the skin making segments and the hitting the opened seed case, the fruit within will be released and it is a good idea to do this into a bowl with water so the fruit falls to the bottom and any pith etc floats to the top and can then be easily removed You may also prefer to freeze the fruit as this also makes separating the seeds easier There are seedless varieties available grown purely for their flowers. ORIGINS This tree originates from Iran with cultivation across the Mediterranean and India from ancient times then the Spanish introduced them to California in 1769. Today they are cultivated in many countries including Africa, India central and south East Asia to name a few.there are known to be trees in France incredibly to be at least 200 years old and in England the

fruit was used in heraldry designs. USES The seeds are generally vibrant red and used in cooking, baking, juices, smoothies cocktails and garnishes for example. The beginning of a four-year programme to save £68m Bexx Bastable @BexBastable

As you pick up today’s Brighton & Hove Independent (Friday), the city council may have set its cost-cutting budget for 2016/17. Or maybe not. Such is the nature of a minority administration. If the budget was not agreed last night, the council will continue to meet until an agreement is made.A budget must be set by March 11. The full council met last night (Thursday), to discuss Labour’s budget which includes a 3.99 per cent

council tax rise for residents, and £68 million savings by 2020. Cllr Warren Morgan, leader of the council has made it clear that cuts to government funding will result in residents paying more council tax for fewer services. Before the meeting, he said: “I’m optimistic that our budget will be passed, and that there will be a consensus around the difficult steps we are forced to take on the cuts, as well as the measures we have been able to take to support some community priorities. “The Greens have tabled no alternatives, no amendments, showing they have no ideas and no

solutions to the Conservative government cuts.” The Conservative Group had a list of amendments to put forward, but did not indicate whether it would support Labour. The amendments included a proposal to save some of the public toilets earmarked for closure by Labour, reinstating the council’s noise patrol service, investing in grass verge c u t t i n g , a n d r eve r s i n g Labour’s proposed cut to residential and respite breaks funding for children with disabilities. The Conservatives said these measures could be paid for through additional savings in senior management costs and through reductions in the ten full-time trade union officials employed by the council. Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, the Conservative Group l e a d e r, s a i d : “ We a r e pleased that the Labour administration has started to carry out some of the reforms to council services t h a t t h e C o n s e r va t i ve Group has been advocating for the last four or five years. However, there are a number of areas where we disagree with their approach

– namely in cutting some of the bread and butter services that residents rely upon and also services to some highly vulnerable groups. Our fully-costed amendments demonstrate that there is no need for them to make these cuts.” The Green Group rejected Labour’s proposals, and said it would not support them. Cllr Phelim Mac Cafferty, convenor of the Green Group, said: “The Labour council budget will be a disaster for this city and as such the Green Group of councillors cannot support it. I’m afraid the rhetoric from the Labour administration simply won’t wash. However we talk about it, whether as service redesign or make-overs or transformation, it doesn’t change one simple fact: you cannot remove £68 million of funding from council services without massive negative impacts on the city’s residents. “The city’s vulnerable people will pay the steepest price over the next four years, as inequality is set to increase. The wo rst impacts will be felt by older and disabled people who will receive less support and become increasingly isolated. Yet all residents

Labour’s controversial budget proposals for the next four years have hit the headlines in the last few months will be affected by these cuts to some degree,as streets get dirtier, antisocial behaviour increases and vulnerable friends and family members go unsupported. Cllr Warren Morgan, leader of the council, said: “There is no doubt that the tens of millions cut from our funding, and the increases in council tax imposed by the government to fund social care, will mean residents will be paying more for less in the future. However we pledged to get the basics right, and we are working to ensure that what the council

does continue to deliver is delivered well. “Nine out of ten councils are putting council tax up by 3.99 per cent and increasing their parking fees so we are not alone, but working with voluntary sector and local business partners, and using ideas from our City Innovation Challenge, we hope to find new ways of ensuring as many public services as possible continue despite the cuts.” See next week’s Brighton & Hove Independent for a report on the meeting.

EU referendum

The debate The UK will soon vote on its membership of the European Union. Brighton and Hove politicians share their views on the upcoming referendum. Bex Bastable

S

@BexBastable

o the date has been set.Thursday,June 23 will be the day that the United Kingdom decides whether it wishes to remain in or leave the European Union. David Cameron announced the date last week, and the move has seen a split in the Conservative Party nationally with several high profile figures turning their backs on the Prime Minister, and joining the Vote Leave campaign. That split is what’s been dominating the national headlines - but in Brighton and Hove there is no such divide. All three of the city’s MPs are on the same page. Despite coming from three different political parties, all three are set to vote to stay in the EU. The local Liberal Democrat group will also be campaigning to remain, and is carrying out a survey of the city’s residents to find out their views on the EU. Of course, the city’s United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) branch is set to campaign to leave the EU, and Maria Caulfield,Conservative MP for Lewes, which includes Falmer, is also Vote Leave. Here’s what local politicians had to say about the upcoming referendum.

faces. Brighton and Hove’s economy combines tourism, high rates of small businesses, and two universities, making us uniquely dependent on our partnerships abroad. “A vote to remain in the EU is a vote to change it for the better. The biggest challenges we face as a country - migration, energy security, global warming, terrorism and security, and economic instability can only be solved by strong international cooperation. “Acting alone, Britain will be a diminished voice and that means we will be more vulnerable to global uncertainties, more affected by decisions made by other countries, and less able to influence decisions based on our values and experiences. That would not only be a shame, it will be damaging to us and the rest of the EU and further afield too.”

“Following the recent negotiations, I feel that even though there is more work to be done, Britain will be safer and stronger in a reformed European Union. “This is not a decision that I have taken lightly but progress has been made and I will therefore be supporting the Prime Minister in his recommendation to “remain.” “However, at the end of the day, everyone will have their say. It is the British people who will decide our future through the in-out referendum on June 23.”

It’s only by working with our European neighbours that we can tackle climate change, protect wildlife and reduce pollution. I n d e e d t h e E u ro p e a n story should be celebrated. by the Prime Minister, for me not only do they not go far enough, they are not legally binding. In reality they are no more than a gentleman’s agreement between countries. “Even if the proposed reforms were enough to convince me to vote to stay, my huge concern is that none of them involve treaty change and so are not legally binding. “This means that o n c e t h e re f e re n d u m is over there is nothing stopping other EU nations changing their minds and backtracking on these reforms. “We have a once in a lifetime chance, with this referendum, to map our future as a country, no one is saying it will be easy but for the first time in nearly 40 years we will be masters of our own destiny, part of Europe but not governed by the EU.”

“EU funding of projects has given the city’s residents a vital lifeline during times of recession and austerity. “Between 2006 and 2014, the EU provided £9,194,853 in direct funding to projects run, o r s u p p o r t e d , by t h e council, for such varied areas as job retraining, educational programmes in over 30 local schools, the environment, and support for the most vulnerable. “ Th e s e f i g u re s - £ 1 million a year just to the council- show how essential EU funding has been to our city’s ability to cope throughout the economic crisis. “Millions of pounds have come into the city, which has helped British workers learn new skills

“Why does a person put themselves forward to the British parliament, when they clearly do not think they are up to governing our country. Our own parliament does not even set VAT or make decisions on how we dispose of our rubbish. “If the people of Brighton and Hove go fishing on their own shore, and catch a sea bass and take it home, it is illegal. But foreign trawlers can catch a ton of sea bass. It is just one example of the stupidity and bureaucracy of the European Union. “The question I have for the Prime Minister is does he really think the British people are so gutless that we cannot stand on our own two feet?”

Warren Morgan

Labour leader of Brighton and Hove City Council

“The practical benefits

of UK membership of the EU are perhaps not immediately visible, but they are substantial. The city council won over £4 million in European Union funding last year, and almost £40 million over the past decade. As our government grant funding ends we need access to those kinds of funding sources more than ever to help our city, our economy and our infrastructure grow. We are increasingly seen as a key European city for retail, the digital economy and tourism. We benefit enormously from the revenue that our language schools draw in, and our local universities draw in millions more. Our city does well out of Europe, I’ll be voting to stay in the EU.”

Geoffrey Theobald

Conservative Group leader on Brighton and Hove City Council

“There won’t be a Group position – it will be up to each individual councillor how she or he votes and we will all respect each other’s views. However, it is very welcome that David Cameron and the Conservative government h ave kep t t h e i r p re election promise to give people the chance to have their say on such an important issue – the first time many will have had the opportunity to do so since the UK joined the EEC. “I will be urging people to listen carefully to both sides of the debate in the coming months and to make up their minds based on what they feel will be in the best interests of the country.”

Festival for women in tech The UK’s only festival focused on supporting women in the digital sector, returns to Brighton for its third year. Spring Forward runs throughout March, alongside Women’s History Month, and this year there a r e 1 1 s p e c i a l eve n t s , designed to attract more women into digital and technology roles. Events include Think Nation, which aims to engage girls and young women interested in the digital sector, while Sussex Innovation Centre’s Make Your Ideas Happen workshop is set to help would-be entrepreneurs turn a start-up idea into a reality. The Career Garden’s HowTo Get Out OfYour Own Way workshop will help women to explore how to overcome limiting beliefs and achieve career success. Viviana Doctorovich, festival co-founder, is a leading user experience designer and product manager. She said: “While efforts are currently being made to address the gender imbalance in the digital industry, I believe many women are still struggling

Spring Forward festival organisers: Jenni Lloyd and (right) Viviana Doctorovich to find a voice in a mainly male dominated work place. The aim of Spring Forward is help women find that voice and encourage them to join this fulfilling and creative industry. My hope is that the festival will act as a springboard for the creation of a support network that’ll e n c o u r a g e wo m e n i n t o taking a more active role in shaping the future of the digital industry.”

Jenni Lloyd, festival codirector, said: “I always thought that diversity in the tech sector would improve but it hasn’t.In fact,we seem to be going backwards. But technology is playing an ever more central part in everyone’s lives. My concern is that by limiting the gene pool for ideas we’re not getting the level of collective intelligence and creativity that we need to address the

wicked problems we face in the best way possible. “Spring Forward gives us an opportunity to show that we are here, that this is a great place to be and that everyone is welcome to join us. We want to make a difference within Brighton and share what we learn nationally.” n For a full list of Spring Forward events, visit: wespringforward.com

Local publishers, Myriad Editions are well known for their commitment and support for graphic novels, and we in Brighton are jolly lucky to have them here. Their care and attention to the production of their books is legendary and this graphic novel has it in spades. The Opportunity is their new release, and is a dark masterpiece that focuses on a young man’s descent into the underworld of door to door selling.Volley draws inspiration from Shakespearian tragedy and is a brave new voice for 2016. It’s winter in Hastings when we meet Colin, a highly ambitious salesman on the verge of making it big as the owner of his own sales office. But things start to go horribly wrong. Soon, mentally and physicallyexhausted Colin has to keep his team from “negging out”, train a new recruit and dodge a gang

of ruthless debt collectors. Oh yes, and he’s run out of coins for the phone box and his boss isn’t returning his calls. As his grasp on reality dissolves, we see how the relentless focus on positivity, in the face of exploitative management, pay and conditions, leads to vulnerability, failure and human tragedy. This a masterly debut with artwork influenced by graphic noir’s classic aesthetic (artists such as David Mazzucchelli, Alex Toth and David Lloyd).Snap it up before it becomes a collector’s item.

Given the number of check shirts, bushy beards and heavy denim, Canadian Dallas Green (aka City and Colour) may have been forgiven for thinking he was closer to home, albeit eighty years ago. The sheer number of bright young beardy hipsters showed just how high Green’s stock is right now, but his memorable soul-infused folk is likely to outlive the current vagaries of fashion. Green opened the UK leg of his tour last Thursday, to a packed Brighton Dome, with support from English songstress Lucy Rose.

Rose warmed the crowd with her acoustic melodies – and a surprise duet with Green which thrilled the unsuspecting crowd. Then for the main event. After wooing his fans with his impressive and atmospheric vocals, Green reminisced about the first time he played in Brighton, 10 years ago at Komedia. He played in the afternoon instead of the evening – as City and Colour was relatively unknown then. How times have changed. Since then, he’s been back to the city half a dozen times – and always draws in a crowd of loyal followers. Green started his career in post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, but went out on his own in 2005, with a different kind of sound.

“If I Should Go Before You” is City and Colour’s fifth album, and Green showcased a range of his new songs – such as the sultry and ethereal “Woman” – with a good mix of his earlier offerings. His performance of “The Girl” (2009) – starting out as an acoustic folky love song before morphing into a more upbeat strumming affair – went down well. For “Body in a Box” (2009), Green asked the audience to hold their phones up in the air – only to tell them to put them back in their pockets, and enjoy the song without distraction. For fans of Green’s music, his heart-tugging and emotive lyrics alongside his soulful and clean vocals, are always best experienced live.

‘My career has evolved like a prehistoric horse’ Comedy

Omid Djalili

Brighton Komedia Monday, March 14

Award-winning comedian and actor Omid Djalili performs at Brighton Komedia on Monday, March 14. Renowned for his razor sharp wit and expertly crafted cultural observations, Omid’s stand-up show explores the diversity of modern Britain. Omid’s credits range from Hollywood movies and television to live productions on the West End stage. He has appeared on UK and US TV, and starred in films such as the Shaun the Sheep Movie, Gladiator and The Mummy. In 2015 he was executive producer of the documentary We Are Many, about the global anti-war demonstrations that took

place on February 15, 2003. However, Omid remains modest about his success. “My career has evolved like the weird little prehistoric horse, the Hypo-hippus, which used to have three toes but then developed hooves. So no one really cares or can say for certain it actually ever existed.” He doesn’t even have a favourite film credit. “The thing about movies is that they are filmed and captured in that state forever,” he explains. “The reason I love stand-up is because there is always the opportunity to improve it and make it better.” Nevertheless, the big and small screen work is still coming in. Omid recently starred in BBC One’s Victorian soap Dickensian, which offers “all of Dickens’ characters in one original series”.

“I’m a fan of the mega mix so I like the concept,” he says. Playing Mr. Venus, a taxidermist who makes only a fleeting appearance in Our Mutual Friend, Omid reminisces about the funnier aspects of the show, instead of any deeper meaning it might have. “I got to wear a hat,” he states. “I love hats. It’s an underrated fashion accessory. Mine gave me an added ‘Pimp of Bethlehem’ dimension, which was unexpected.” The programme proved popular among Dickens enthusiasts but Omid, with his comedian’s perspective, noticed another group of fans. “The only other group who are watching it apart from Dickens fans are the Brighton branch of the Hairy Bears. “They have emailed to say that they are enjoying it immensely, but could I show

BRIGHTON AND HOVE INDEPENDENT

A hidden gem tucked away on a Hove street One day when walking into work I stumbled across a lovely little road in Hove. Richardson Road has nearly everything you would ever need on it including a butcher, fish monger, off licence and baker. This was a great discovery and something that I have always loved about working and living in Brighton and Hove; there is always another hidden gem round a corner somewhere. One resident of Richardson Road is Drury’s coffee house, where I spent a surprisingly sunny lunch time recently. Drury’s coffee originated in London in 1936 and was started by three Italian brothers. The branch situated in Hove is also a family affair, having been owned by members of the Davids and Lewis family for the last 14 years. The current owners, Elaine and Stephen, took over the premises eight years ago running both the café,wholesale distribution and a machine showroom from the one building. When you initially step through the door there is a distinctly traditional feel to the interior with the wholesale counter and wall of Drury’s produce

A simple lunch at Drury’s Coffee House

If you’re not already familiar with this little spot in Hove I would recommend taking a trip to Richardson Road and Drury’s.

immediately in front of you. The rest of the café is spacious and a traditional coffee house feel remains. On the day I visited the customers represented a decent cross-section of the local community with people from all walks of life in attendance. I order an Americano at the counter from the wide selection of teas and coffees and go for a New York-style bagel for my lunch. There is a wide selection

A traditional tea shop feel at Drury’s Coffee House

of sandwich fillings all of which can be presented as a sandwich, baguette or bagel. There is also a variety of cakes and bakes should you be after something a little sweeter. Given the unusually bright weather I take my place at one of the many outside tables and join the good people in Hove in watching the world go by. After a brief wait my coffee and then my bagel arrive. Both are of a good standard; the bagel has a welcome amount of pastrami and pickles with the all important mustard kick; the coffee is smooth without being overly strong, which is good for me as I am only an occasional coffee drinker. I enjoy my time sitting in the sunshine contemplating some things I have to do later and making some notes in my to do list. I chat with Elaine for a while about their business and how it came about; she clearly enjoys her work and being a part of the local community. It is a great spot to be in and Elaine is proud of what they are doing; even if there are challenges in being a small business in the age of the multi-nationals. Before I took my leave Elaine offered me a piece of

cake. I had originally planned to skip dessert as had a big dinner planned that evening; my gluttonous self felt otherwise, and I was glad that it did. I opted for a home made chocolate brownie and was given a moreish and moist slice of deliciousness. Few things in life are as satisfying on such a base level as a well-made brownie and this is what I got. I was so busy having a “moment” with my cake that I completely forgot why I was there and did not get a picture. If you are not already familiar with this little spot in Hove I would recommend taking a trip to Richardson Road and Drury’s. In the space of one road you can pick up everything you need for a weekend meal and then stop off for some light refreshments before heading home. Surely that is one of life’s most simple pleasures. Tom Flint writes a food blog Food Booze and Reviews at: www. foodboozeandreviews.com

TheJouleCaffeineBracelet i s n o t a n a t t r a c t i ve adornment constructed by the stringing-together of coffee beans. Nor is it miniature jewellery for decorating your coffee beans . Although both of those concepts sound super mega awesome and we should probably start a crowd-funding bid, the Joule Caffeine Bracelet is a more sensible idea. But only slightly. In theory,it’s like a nicotine patch, slowly releasing caffeine into your system through a process they call “transdermal administration”. Enough said on that - we wouldn’t want to get into trouble. In practice, it’s a rubber ring which you strap on. Again, let’s just move along swiftly. You know those antibu llyi ng or H elp For Heroes rubber bracelets? It looks like one of them, but it’s not promoting a good cause, saving the environment, or helping others; it’s administering your vanilla latte “without the negative effects” of just drinking one. What a terrible waste of a scientist’s time. The bracelet is a bracelet, as opposed to a necklace, a n k l e t , o r b a l a c l ava , because there is less fatty tissue on your wrist (at least there should

be), so the pathway to your bloodstream is not blocked. The caffeine dose is the same as a standard cup of coffee, but it takes four hours for your skin to drink it. Some people take almost as long to nurse a small tea, but to be fair they probably think we have WiFi. We seem to be the only p e o p l e n o t o n Te a m Bracelet - their goal to raise $15,000 has already reached over $40,000. We refuse to play - we’ll be sticking to coffee in cups, bracelets from Cartier, and perhaps creating cutesy, bejewelled bijouterie for coffee beans. Why not? Because that would be a stupid and p o i n t l e s s e n d e avo u r, which would waste our time and your money. A caffeine bracelet? Get out.

100 car clubs registered for Classic by staff reporter

Already, more than 100 car clubs have registered – in record time – to be part of spectacular infield displays at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (29-31 July), ensuring the massive three-day festival is once again the UK’s biggest celebration of motoring history. Underlining the event’s ever-spiralling popularity, last year’s Silver Jubilee meeting

attractedinexcessof100clubs for the first time – a figure that is set to be topped again in 2016 with increasing interest from across the UK and Europe. In 2015, a total of 120 clubs displayed an unprecedented array of 10,000 privately owned classic cars, providing 100,000 visitors with an unrivalled showcase of glittering automotive history. However, it was not until mid-March that the number of clubs registered topped the ton suggesting this year’s motoring multitude could raise the bar to even loftier heights. This

year’s impressive line-up of clubs already includes a diverse mix of clubs from the Mini Cooper Register, Midget & Sprite Club and Bristol Owners Club through to regularglitteratiwhoattendfrom across clubs such as Porsche, Maserati, Aston Martin and Ferrari. “It’s no surprise that more and more car clubs are now making the Classic their main national event as the sheer scale of their wonderful displays is itself one of the festival’s major attractions,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of organiser Goose Live Events.

Avid footie fan nets all 92 league grounds Ollie Berry

ollie.berry@jpress.co.uk Twitter: OB_WSCT

A Brighton & Hove Albion supporter joined the prestigious 92-club on Saturday as his trip to Cardiff saw him complete the whole current set of Football League grounds.

Simon Medhurst, from Southwater, has seen more than 1000 matches and visited a total of 130 Football League grounds in finally netting the current crop of sides that make up the 92. The landmark game came as Albion suffered a shock 4-1 defeat across the Welsh boarder at the Cardiff City Stadium. The 50-year-old father of two, who is a seasonticket holder at the Amex, generally takes in games with a crowd of six from Southwater and Wisborough Green. Medhurst said: “My journey started as a young Hammer back in March 72 with a trip to Upton Park. “My dad taking me to my first game was my stand-out childhood memory, I still remember the trip on the tube, the East End markets, the queue getting in, the atmosphere and the game itself. West Ham won 4-2 winners thanks mainly to a Bryan Robson brace and I was immediately hooked on watching live football. “A trip to my dad’s beloved White Hart Lane followed but then I caught a bug that led

Simon Medhurst (left) along with fellow Brighton fans Richard Hamlin and Colin Pinkard in Cardiff

to me coming out in Blue and White stripes and the Goldstone Ground becoming home from home. “Brighton’s plight up and down the Football League ladder enabled me to take in many grounds and this was complimented with trips to the likes of Watford, Norwich and Baseball Ground, Derby hanging out with my QPR supporting mates. “From then on I was on a mission to complete my 92. My work around England allowed me to

take in many midweek fixtures including plenty of Johnson Paint Trophy bore draws. “It’s been a long, weird and wonderful road that I am so chuffed to have finally have driven down. Ironically, next season I will have to go to West Ham to top up my 92. “There were absolutely no champagne moments to celebrate completing the 92 just Bovril at halftime to try and warm our soaked skins.” Scares at Millwall’s Den, getting lost in Accrington and crashing

his wife’s car on the way to Hull are just some of the less memorable moments as well as the Withdean days. Medhurst added: “In recent years the Southwater BHA lads and our better halves have been making long weekends of certain away fixtures. “The most eventful trip has to be last season’s win at Bolton. The highlights have been plentiful; I loved my first trip to Anfield in the 70s, being amongst the notorious Man United fans at the

open School End, Loftus Road, having a laugh with the Walsall contingent at Shrewsbury and both stadiums in Manchester being magnificent. “The stand-out stadiums have been the two owned by Arsenal. Highbury was classy and so different to other stadiums and of the modern stadiums Emirates just pips the Amex and Etihad. “That said, without doubt the best away day with Brighton has to be that famous trip to Newcastle when we

secured promotion to the promised land.” Mementos collected along the way, however, rarely see the light of day. All are tucked away in the attic, but that’s just a small price to pay for the football enthusiast, who added: “My programme collection is vast but stored away in the loft, Jane, my wife, hates football memorabilia with a passion. “Although she does deserve a mention allowing me to spend numerous hours and wads of cash at the footie.”

ith a prime time drama serial, Charles Dickens seems to be well and truly back in vogue, and perhaps one of his most famous and often used quotes, sums up the mixed fortunes of the Albion over the last 180 minutes. First stop on Saturday was a lunchtime trip to South Wales for a live TV kick-off against Cardiff City. All credit to the Albion faithful who travelled down to the principality in horrendous conditions, having made the trip on a number of occasions this time I like many others took the easy option and opted for a Sussex pub venue, and given Brighton’s dismal first half showing I’m sure every man, woman and child in Albion colours at Cardiff had wished they’d stayed at home and watched it on the telly.

In Chris Hughton’s defence the weather conditions didn’t help, though some might counter that argument by saying it’s the same for both teams, then again in the pub where I was a number of supporters were questioning the team selection even before a ball was kicked. Needless to say, three-nil down at the break, a glimmer of hope with an early goal in the second half before the hosts restored their three-goal cushion. To lose 4-1 is never pleasant whatever the circumstances, possibly both age and years of watching the Albion, I came away from the pub on Saturday with my glass very much half full (And with only two bar staff servicing a packed pub that was an achievement in itself) If Saturday proves to be a wake-up call or lesson learned, however you put it, then that’s a positive. Almost immediately

I was buoyed on Saturday night when I saw the Facebook post of new signing Jiri Skalak, who apologised for the result and performance, thanked the fans for making the trip and promised things would be put right on Tuesday night at Bristol City. Regardless of whether someone advised him to do this or he did it off his own bat, fans love things like this, and on this occasion the player was true to his word, as the Albion bounced back with an emphatic 4-0 win at Bristol City equalling a club record in the process of the highest away win in the top divisions, the previous ironically being at Bristol Rovers under Alan Mullery nearly 40 years ago. So once again the top of the championship makes exciting reading, with the Albion having to play four of the top-six before the end of the campaign, it still is very much in our hands.

It’s another TV game this weekend, we seem to be on as much as Ant and Dec at the moment, with the visit of Leeds United (Dirty Leeds/The Champions of Europe delete where applicable) to the Amex on Monday evening, which whilst I am very much a traditionalist and favour 3pm Saturday kick-offs does provide a potential double bill for local football fans. Worthing entertain Molesey at Woodside on Saturday and to reiterate all Albion season ticket holders can get into Woodside Road on production of their Amex season ticket for £5, whilst despite challenging for promotion to the Premiership, there are still a number of seats available for Monday night’s game at the Amex. It’s a cliché I know, but I really do think a great atmosphere at home really is that 12th man, so if you are wavering, give it a go, and ring the Albion box office on 0844 327 1901.

Albion’s clinical nature pleases winger Murphy Lewis Mason @_LewisMason Albion winger Jamie Murphy was delighted to see his side’s clinical edge in their 4-0 away Championship success at Bristol City on Tuesday. Strikes from Murphy, Tomer Homed, Sam Baldock and a Mark Little own-goal were enough to see Brighton come away with all three points. Wi t h L i t t l e p u t t i n g through his own net, the stats showed Albion scored four goals, despite only registering three shots on target. But that fact does not bother Murphy and he just wants the side to win matches. He told seagulls.co.uk: “That’s what you want. You don’t want to have five or six shots and see none of them go in. “We went there wanting to put the performance right after Saturday,so it was good

to get the four goals and keep a clean sheet, so everyone was delighted. Murphy’s strike was his sixth for Brighton this season. The winger wants to add more goals as the season reaches it’s climax and hopes that can help Albion reach the promise land of the Premier League. He added: “I still hope to score a few more, but I love scoring goals and if I can keep helping us to win, then that’s great. “I grew up as a striker and I only moved out to the lefthand side when I was 19 or 20 because I wasn’t a big guy. “But you learn by playing out there. At the time, that was the only way you’d get in the team by playing out on the left or on the right side. “It’s going to come down to the last two weeks of the season and all we can worry about is ourselves and see where we go.” Albion are next in action on Monday when they face Leeds United at the Amex

Hawks suffer Senior Cup heartache

Hawks’ skipper Sergio Torres missed in the shoot-out as his side exited the Sussex Senior Cup Sussex Senior Cup holders Whitehawk were dumped out of the competition on Wednesday. It was penalty heartache for Hawks as they fell to a 5-4 shoot-out loss to

Worthing in their semi-final clash at Culver Road. It was the Ryman South s i d e R e b e l s w h o we n t ahead through Ben Pope on 12 minutes. Back came Hawks, though, and strikes

from Danny Mills and Jake Robinson saw them take a 2-1 lead. Lloyd Dawes made it 2-2 with eight minutes left, before Hawks were dumped out on penalties.

1,200 miles, myriad toll bridges and two trips along the M4 since the 3-2 win over Bolton, the Albion are back on the box next Monday. Thanks, Sky. Albion’s backpacking exploits brought a mixed back of results. Two clean sheets - one of w hom was ag ai ns t the top team who didn’t ultimately score against us this season – the biggest away league win in over five years, and a good hiding in South Wales. Bad days at the office are part of anyone’s life, even if you don’t work in an office, though it’s more in focus when that bad day is in public, on the box. Thanks, Sky. We j u m p e d o f f t h e rollercoaster we so often talk about and climbed on board the bumper cars as Cardiff ran us down in horizontal rain. We quickly returned to scoring form three days later as we overturned our 4-1 M4 deficit and

Peter Brackley gave Bristol City a damn fine thrashing. It’s indicative of the spirit of the squad to come back from such a walloping, and dish out one themselves. A quick word on our good friend of the R o a r, t h e l e g e n d a r y football comment ator Peter Brackley, who is recovering after his medical episode last week. We’re delighted to hear he is on the mend. Good well soon, Peter.

Albion resurgent ahead of Leeds clash After their run of games on the road in fine fashion earlier this week, Brighton will be in confident mood ahead of their first game on home turf in over two weeks against Leeds United in three days time. they had won by that margin on the road in five and a half years. The win was made all themoreimportantduetothe rest of the Championship’s top four all picking up three points in midweek, meaning Albion stay within touching distance of the automatic promotion places. Monday’s game gives them a good opportunity to keep the pressure on against a United side who have been more miss than hit this season. The Yorkshire outfit have only won one of their last ten games, with their last victory also coming

Massimo Cellino is wary of the number 17 against Bristol City. Former Albion loanee ChrisWood will be the main danger from the visitors, witheightgoalstohis name this season. With Leed’s chairman Massimo Cellino notoriously superstitious of the number 17, Albion’s Connor Goldson, who wears said number, could further compound the Italian’s current woes on and off the field with his first goal for the club.

Ok there I’ve gone and done it. As BBC Sussex breakfast presenter Neil Pringle said, we will hold you to that. I had just committed to saying Albion were nailed on be in the top-six this season just hours after the 4-0 drubbing of Bristol City onTuesday. It was described by the manager Chris Hughton as the perfect performance scoring heavily and a clean sheet. However, it wasn’t the result at Ashton Gate that prompted the prediction. We are now in the final third of the season and my statement came from covering every one ofAlbion’s games this season. Just three points separate the top four sides and things couldn’t be tighter. Yes Middlesbrough and Hull have games in hand but the full Championship table demonstrates one major factor in my reasoning.

Dayslike Cardiffawayand Boroathome willhappenbutthis welldrilledsquadhave shownenough consistencytoconvince methattheseasoncould beextended The Seagulls have lost less (five) games than any other team in the division. They are difficult to beat. Days like Cardiff away and ‘Boroathome willhappenbut this well drilled squad have shown enough consistency to convince me that the season could be extended. Of course the top-two places are not beyond them but the agony or ecstasy of the play-offs could beckon for the third time in four years.

All sorts of drama could ensue. Derby have faltered once again, Sheffield Wednesday are coming like a train, Burnleykeepnickingwinsbut Albion will, I’m sure, remain in the hunt. As Seagulls’ Sam Baldock put it on Tuesday night as our teeth chattered behind the goal, why would things change. He reminded the media posse that this was the same squad that went 21 games unbeaten this season. He reminded us that they defend as a team and they attackasateam.Thereturning striker is always straight talking in his interviews but displaystheclarityof thought thathighlightsthefocusofthe squad. He hadn’t started a game himself since November 7 but was as determined to finish the job and achieve the club’s

aim as he was in August. Hughton now has players returning and an eye on the loan market if he requires it but he considers himself ‘happy’ with what he’s got.As the song goes, sometimes we don’t know what we’ve got til it’s gone but Hughton knows full well what he has. The Albion still have to playBurnley, Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby. It’s in their hands.Life will change for fans, players, manager and even the media ifpromotionissecuredviathe automatic or play-off places. I still stand by that claim to Neil. They have a shot at the title – let’s hope its third time lucky.

Contrasting few days but Seagulls are still in the hunt

It was a contrasting few days for the Seagulls but the three points at Bristol City on Tuesday keeps them firmly in the hunt for a toptwo finish. On Saturday at Cardiff, it just felt like one of those days when the hosts got the rub of the green. At Bristol City, it was the opposite and Albion returned home with their biggest win during Chris Hughton’s 14 months in charge. Bristol City are currently in the middle of redeveloping their Ashton Gate ground, to make it a 27,000 capacity. Cardiff, on the other hand, have been in their state-of-theart 33,280 capacity Cardiff

City Stadium for seven years but only 14,143 were at their game with the Seagulls. Yes, it was an early kickoff (which didn’t stop more than 1,000 Brighton fans from making the trip) and it was on television, but surely a club like Cardiff should be attracting more fans? The reason they don’t is simple. Their fans became disillusioned by the way owner Vincent Tan was running the club. Just two years ago, in the Premier League, Cardiff averaged 27,429. But prior to that season in the top flight, there was huge controversy whenTan changed Cardiff’s home kit from blue to red in 2012, while also making the club’s primary logo a dragon instead of the traditional bluebird. That was met by a huge backlash and now the club are paying for it – despite reverting back to a home blue kit midway

through last season. The one season in the Premier League obviously kept fans going to games and attracted new supporters. But, since then, a number of fans have stayed away. The Our City Is Blue slogan plastered everywhere outside the stadium even seemed a little ironic – and is probably too late to get fans to return. They averaged 20,717 in their first season in their new stadium in 2009-10 and that is their lowest average attendance for a season in their new home, until now. Their average this season is just 14,429 so somewhere the club has lost at least 6,000 fans in a couple of years. Is it a case of a club taking fans for granted and, as a result, this is the consequence? From a high of a 28,000 crowd in the Premier League

Cardiff City Stadium to around half that number rattling around in their stadium made the place feel pretty soulless on Saturday. And it wasn’t even their lowest attendance of the

season. Luckily for Seagulls fans, if and when they reach the promised land of the Premier League, they have an owner – and fan – inTony

Bloom, who supporters can put their faith in making the right decisions. Something would have to go drastically wrong for home crowds to be just 14,000.
