Brighton’s skyline set to feature a new attraction Zip wire ride could replace Brighton Wheel this summer Brighton Zip is the newest attractionsettobeunveiledon the ever-changing seafront, replacing the Brighton Wheel. Paramount Entertainment, the firm which operates the wheel, agreed to dismantle it in May, in time for the opening of the British Airways i360 this summer. Paramount has now applied to replace the wheel, which was set up in 2011, with two 300 metre zip wires. Thrill-seekers will be able to whizz down a cable from a 20-metre tower to a landing area on the beach. There are also plans for a 20-metre a jump zone, where people could leap out onto a safe landing area. The project will cost £1.7 million, and also includes a cafe.
Trading year-round, the Brighton Zip would be the largest such ride in Sussex, and operators hope to open in time for this summer. But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Paramount Entertainment was set to appeal the city council’s decision not to renew the lease on the Brighton Wheel, in favour of the i360. The new plan, however, seems to have satisfied both parties. Warren Morgan, leader of the council, said: “We always remained interested in the idea of another attraction to replace the wheel. “Now we have a proposal with much less visual impact fortheneighbours. We’reclear that an attraction on that site is desirable because it brings life to the area - and one of our

ambitions is to regenerate the seafront between the pier and the marina.” A statement from Brighton Wheel said: “We are very excited about our new attraction the Brighton Zip to replace the wheel. “With further private investment the Brighton Zip will give Madeira Drive a great boost and act as a catalyst for regeneration east of the pier.” A report to Brighton and Hove City Council’s economic development and culture committee on Thursday (March 10), recommends granting landlords’ consent at the Dalton’s Bastion site, just east of Brighton Pier. Like the wheel, proposals would also need to be granted planning permission.

Rethink on school catchment areas Bex Bastable
bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable
Rising demand for secondary school places in Brighton and Hove, alongside plans for a new free school, has sparked a potential shake-up in catchment areas. The move will also aim to make the admissions process fairer, giving disadvantaged children a higher priority. Popular schools in the city are already oversubscribed, as was evident this week when the intake for September was announced. Dorothy Stringer had 337 places, but 495 children picked it as their first choice. Blatchington Mill was similarly oversubscribed, with 292 places, but 410 applicants picked it as their top choice. Now the council wants to have a conversation with the public on how the admission process can be improved. Cllr Daniel Chapman,
deputy chair of the children, young people and skills committee, said: “We want to ensure that children from all backgrounds have the same opportunities and the same chances to achieve their full potential. With this in mind we are committed to closing the gap in achievement between children from disadvantaged families and children who are not. “No admissions system will please all parents, but our aim above all is to arrive at a new system that is as fair as possible.” The current system uses catchment areas and a range of priorities to determine how places are allocated, such as looked after children, medical needs, and sibling links. However, as of September 2018 the projected rise in the number of secondary age pupils means that in some catchment areas there will be too many pupils for the places available.
The proposals include all the city’s secondary schools and academies, excluding faith schools which handle their own admissions. It will also include the proposed University of Brighton secondary free school in the east of the city its exact location is yet to be revealed. The proposals are: n each school to have its own catchment area (Model A) n the city to have four catchment areas, three with two schools in and one with three schools in (Model B) n each secondary school being part of a catchment area with three schools in (Model C) The plans will go before the children, young people and skills committee on Monday, and if agreed a period of “public engagement” will begin, until April 22. This will then pave the way for a formal consultation in the autumn.
Transport Extra help for disabled passengers
A Brighton and Hove Buses scheme to make travel easier for disabled passengers has been adopted by local taxi firm Streamline. The Helping Hand scheme assists wheelchair users, pregnant women and the elderly, by providing a customised pocket-sized card with a simple message that can be shown discreetly to the driver. Dave Smith, Streamline chairman, said: “The scheme is very popular in the city and will be of great help for our customers.”

Fringe Station samba surprise EDWARD THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY
Brighton Fringe performers including samba dancers, a choir and cabaret artists surprised commuters on Wednesday, to celebrate the arrival of this year’s Brighton Fringe brochure. Crowds at Brighton station enjoyed flash performances from Peter Joannou the Singing Barber, the Unified Rhythm Samba Band, King of the Fringe Benjamin Butch, cabaret artist Jo Jo Bellini, and vintage swing trio the Close Shaves. Brighton Fringe runs from May 6 to June 5, with 900 events on its line up.
Hove library’s fate The city council has said “the majority” responding to a survey are in favour of closing Hove’s library, selling it off, and merging it with the museum as a way to save community libraries. The 1908 building costs £500,000 a year to run and needs £750,000 of repairs in the next five years. The new plan proposes merging it with Hove Museum in New Church Road. If the move does not go ahead, the council said at least seven of the 12 neighbourhood libraries would need to close. Consultation forms returned from 1,124 people revealed 57 per cent of respondents agree the Hove move; 38 per cent disagree and
the rest were undecided. Warren Morgan, council leader, said: “I completely understand local attachment to the current Hove Library. But keeping it in that building will leave us no choice but to consider shutting other libraries to pay for it. So we must put services before buildings and provide the best citywide facilities with the money we have. This is a great opportunity to work with residents and library users to provide a new, improved service that is much-loved and integral to the life of Hove.” A report on the Libraries Plan is going before the economic development and culture committee on Thursday.

City councillor accused of ‘trolling’ Members of the council have been handed a social media “do’s and don’ts” guide, after a complaint that a councillor had “trolled” a resident. A report to the audit and standards committee refers to posts allegedly made by a councillor on two Facebook groups in December. The complainant also said he had been “trolled” by the councillor - a term for online abuse - and the councillor had then “blocked” him.
The councillor, who was not named in the report, “robustly denied” the allegations. The complaint was dropped by the council, as Facebook posts - which can be edited - were considered unreliable evidence, However, it did result in a guide to councillors on “how to stay out of trouble” on social media sites. Penned by the council’s head of law, Abraham
Ghebre-Ghiorghis, the guide said: “The council welcomes members’ increasing use of social media and aims to facilitate it by providing guidance regarding what is and is not acceptable.” It warns against attacking or insulting people online, posting libelous statements, sharing confidential information, and blogging in haste, particularly when tired, or after consuming alcohol.
The report noted that 30 councillors out of 54 use Twitter, with 25 of them classed as “active users”, posting several times a week. It also notes that since the Social Networking Policy was introduced two years ago, there were six allegations of breaches regarding council employees. The audit and standards committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss the social media policy.

Hippodrome is ‘well worth saving’ says star, after rare glimpse inside PHOTOGRAPH: DAVE STREETER, SAVE OUR HIPPODROME

Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) joined Save Our Hippodrome campaigners, for a secret tour of the old theatre building nestled away in The Lanes. The exclusive viewing was an eye-opener for Mr Cook, who said he was backing the campaign, although it was too early to say what his involvement would be. He said: “The reason to go inside was sheer curiosity. Having been approached by the Hippodrome campaign, I wanted to see what we are trying to save. Now I’ve seen it, I am 10 times more committed. I expected it to be a ramshackle sort of thing but it was really beautiful. It is well worth saving. My eyes have been opened, and it is three times bigger than I remember it. It is fantastic. “There is this empty, beautiful slice of history right under our noses.”
Norman Cook with Save Our Hippodrome campaigners on Tuesday
He said he would spread the word about what he had seen. The Hippodrome, which is sited between Middle Street and Ship Street, first opened in Brighton, in 1897, as an ice-
skating rink, but was used as a circus and theatre from 1901. The theatre closed in 1964, and it was then taken on by Mecca Bingo the following year. It was used as a bingo
hall until 2006, but has since been left empty. The Save Our Hippodrome group, alongside others, have been campaigning to reopen the building as a theatre. A Save Our Hippodrome

A potential jewel in Brighton’s crown.” The hope of the group is that getting the high-profile star on board will accelerate their campaign to reopen the building. Watch this space...
Reduced rail service to London over Easter break Rail journeys will be more complicated over Easter as no trains will be running from Victoria to Brighton. Network Rail improvement work to rebuild a critical junction at Battersea Park, will mean no Gatwick Express or Southern trains will run from Victoria. Instead, Southern and Thameslink services will link the capital to the coast and Gatwick Airport from London Bridge and London Blackfriars. Angie Doll, Gatwick Express passenger services director, said: “The engineering work around Battersea means that Victoria station won’t be available to us over the Easter break, so there will be no Gatwick Express services and a much reduced service on the Brighton Main Line. “However, there will be plenty of alternative services ,so we’ll be able to get people where they need to go.” To check journeys between March 25 and 28, visit: www. southernrailway.com

Hotel on hold as club blasts city council Bex Bastable
bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable
Brighton and Hove Albion has saidthe“astonishing”decision by the council to reject the club’s plans for a hotel next to the Amex stadium, means its plans are now on hold.
The club’s board said it was “extremely disappointed” by the decision, and issued a statement on Thursday, which read: “The board has therefore decided to put the development on hold while it consults with its partners in the project to see if there is a way forward.”
Albion’s proposals for a 150-bed hotel and cancer treatment centre were refused by the city’s planning committee last month. There were concerns that the building did not fit in with the stadium - but Albion says the plans were designed by the same architects.

City’s culture boss to take temporary post The woman at the helm of the city council’s cultural services is to join Croydon Council on a full-time secondment for six months. This comes as the Royal Pavilion and Museums are set to move out of council hands, and into a trust. Paula Murray, assistant chief executive at Brighton and Hove City Council, will take up the temporary role on April 1, to boost Croydon’s position as a cultural hub. The council said during that time Ms Murray will continue to develop a business case for moving the Royal Pavilion and Museums into Trust status
and securing the future of libraries and tourism services. Geoff Raw, chief executive of the city council, said: “This is a great opportunity for Paula and I wish her every success in her new role. In the meantime we will also be able to call on her expertise. Paula has a wealth of experience on developing the cultural offer of our city and has led on plans to put Brighton and Hove’s cultural services on a sound footing for the future.” Ms Murray said she was “thrilled”, and the opportunity could lead to joint working between the councils.

David and his partner Adam chose to adopt
Adopting a child was a no brainer
As charity Diagrama urged LGBT couples to foster or adopt, David Beales and his partner Adam, from Hove, decided to share their story. Mr Beales wrote: “Choosing to adopt was, for us, a no brainer. By the time we both considered children, we felt like we were soaring on a wave of equality, with agencies and councils advertising how happy they would be to accept samesex couples as potential adopters. So there we were, two gay guys, ready to adopt. Who to turn to, where to go? “We approached Diagrama and they welcomed us with open arms. We went to an information evening and met the friendly social workers who told us about all the fun
and trials we could expect. “Let’s be honest, children don’t get taken into care because they’re living in a happyhome.Ifyouadopt, you accept as part of the deal that your future little person will come from a background of neglect, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, physical violence, sexual abuse, or worse - a combination of these. Was this realisation worrying? Of course. Does it matter when our son looks me in the eye and says ‘I love you Daddy’? Hell no.” He explained that the process of approval entails an assessment of your finances, lifestyle, and what you want from family life, plus some intensive training. But it doesn’t end there.
Mr Beales said he and his partner have since attended a whole host of courses by Diagrama to support them post-adoption. He said: “One thing you’ll learn pretty soon is that no one is an island in adoption. There’s always someone there to help. “I shall leave you with this nugget of wisdom from my wonderful father. He said, ‘Having a family is something you just have to do’. And guess what, from the bottom of my heart, I really hope you do too.” Diagrama is holding an adoption information event at the Brighthelm Centre on March 8, from 6.30pm to 8pm. Record fine for cold callers A Brighton company responsible for 46 million cold calls has been fined £350,000 - the largest ever penalty issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Brighton-based Prodial Ltd, was behind millions of automated calls which played recorded messages relating to PPI claims. Operating out of a residential property and hiding its true identity, the firm generated more than 1,000 complaints. One in seven people targeted by Prodial said they
were left feeling helpless that they could do nothing to stop the calls which were extremely intrusive. Companies can use internet phone lines to cheaply make huge numbers of recorded marketing calls but the law states that firms can only make calls to people who have consented to being contacted in this way. However, Prodial had no such consent; and evidence from the investigation showed personal details from the calls were sold on to claims-management companies. The ICO’s
enforcement team is currently working to recover the fine from the company, which has been liquidated . Christopher Graham, information commissioner, said: ‘This is one of the worst cases of cold calling we have ever come across. The volume of calls made in just a few months was staggering.” Richard Lloyd, Which? executive director, said: “Millions of people are bombarded with nuisance calls, so it’s good to see the ICO issuing ever larger fines to tackle this everyday menace.”

Residents’ petition against GP closures Olivia Lerche
olivia.lerche@jpress.co.uk @OliviaLerche
Residents are anxiously waiting to hear news about the future of five GP surgeries in Brighton and Hove – with one group petitioning to save their service. Health provider, the Practice Group Limited, gave notice on its contract to run five surgeries in the centre after NHS England said it was considering reducing payments to the company. The surgeries, which serve 11,500 patients, are in Hangleton, Bevendean, Whitehawk, North Street in Brighton, and Morley Street in Brighton. Bevendean residents have launched a campaign in response to the news their community could be without a service provider from June. Linda Game and Mitch Alexander set up a petition to save The Willows surgery and have gained more than
300 signatures so far. Ms Game said: “I’ve never been involved in anything like this before but this is so serious. “It’s about people’s health. It’s not like we’re asking for something; we’re trying to stop something being taken away. “Because we’ve all paid for our NHS and why can’t this government run it properly?” Ms Alexander said: “It’s services like this that make a community. “People around here aren’t wealthy; they can’t just jump in a taxi to get to the doctor and the last thing you want to do when you’re poorly is several bus rides.” NHS England South wrote to patients in January to tell them about the changes to the service. The organisation said its priority is to ensure all affected patients have ongoing access to local GP services. A spokesperson said: “All patientfeedbackwillbetaken
into account in reaching a final decision about how to guarantee their future care and we will update patients about this as soon as we can.” The Practice Group told patients the decision was not ‘taken lightly’ and said increasing pressures such as demand, difficulty recruiting GPs and rising costs were among the reasons for their decision to end the contract. NHS England South is expected to make an announcement about the changes within a fortnight – but officials are under pressure to protect the 1,400 homeless patients registered with the specialist practice in Morley Street. Fran McCabe, chair of Healthwatch Brighton and Hove, described the situation as ‘serious’ and said it will cause anxiety for patients who might have to register with another doctor. Gateway to city is ‘ugly abandoned wasteland’
Experts to monitor city’s new buildings
Conservative councillors in Patcham have written to Highways England asking what plans are in place to improve the look of the “ugly abandoned wasteland” at the A23/A27 roundabout following vegetation clearance work. The dense vegetation was cleared to improve sight lines and road safety for drivers, but nothing has been put in its place. Cllr Geoffrey Theobald said: “We would like to know what their plans are to make this an attractive gateway to our city rather than the ugly abandoned wasteland that it has now become.”
A panel of independent experts is to be set up to ensure major developments in Brighton and Hove meet “high quality” standards. The city council has appointed Design South East (DSE) to provide a support service aimed at improving the design of new buildings, their surrounding landscapes and public spaces. Prospective developers of major schemes (over 10 homes or 1,000 square metres of floor space), in consultation with the council and DSE, will be encouraged to submit their designs to the panel, before applying to the council for planning permission.

A Week in the City Building begins on 57 new homes City councillors marked the start of work to build 57 new council homes in Whitehawk. Cllr Warren Morgan, leader of the council, and Cllr Anne Meadows, chair of the council’s housing and new homes committee, visited the Findon Road site on Friday (February 26). The development, on the site of the former Whitehawk Library, will consist of 10 one-bedroom flats, 33 twobedroom flats and 14 threebedroom flats. Work is due to be completed by autumn next year. Cllr Morgan said: “It is great to see work starting on these 57 new flats, which make up
a significant proportion of the 215 new council homes now completed, on site or underway, and around 40 more in the current pipeline. “This is a high quality council homes development in a prominent site in Whitehawk, and we look forward to the first residents moving in towards the end of next year. “Other new council homes currently being built include nine flats which are about to be completed at Robert Lodge nearby, 12 new family houses in Hangleton and Portslade, five homes in Kemp Town, and 45 extra-care flats in Albion Hill.”
Recognition for bravery at awards
Police bosses, with the city’s mayor, high sheriff and award winners
More than 30 awards were handed out at Brighton and Hove Police’s divisional awards ceremony on Monday. Winners included Sergeant Jon Hartley, PC Peter Swash and PC Pat Lewsey for rescuing a woman from the sea in October.
Members of the public were also given awards including Harry Cleary and Geoffrey Harris. Geoffrey detained an intruder who had broken into his house, and Harry tracked a group of men across the city who had assaulted and robbed him at cash point.

Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion
It’s time for MPs to stand up for the NHS
N
ext Friday I will have the honour of a musical accompaniment as I step onto my train to London. This unusual early morning send off isn’t actually for me – it’s for the NHS Reinstatement Bill which I will be bringing to the floor of the House of Commons that day. The debate in Parliament on the Bill couldn’t be more timely. In Brighton & Hove the future of five GP’s surgeries has been thrown into doubt as the private firm running them announced it was to terminate its contract. Indeed across the UK, health workers are fighting to save the NHS we love from government mistreatment. From the junior doctors forced to go on strike to defend safe and fair practices to the nurses demanding decent financial support for their studies, a new wave of protest has erupted. Added to this rightful discontent among staff is the fact that patients are suffering as our hospitals are being hit by crisis after crisis. Just days ago the local hospital in Brighton was placed on ‘black alert’ meaning that it was unable to cope with demand, and patients were diverted elsewhere.
Protests by NHS staff are increasing in the face of the government’s controversial health policies.
If you zoom out to look at the big picture you’ll find that our NHS is changing rapidly. Many services have been handed to private companies such as Virgin, Serco and US giant United Health, hiding behind the NHS logo. In the last five years there has been a 50 per cent increase in the amount spent by local health bodies on non-NHS providers. An army of staff is now employed to manage
these contracts – while the core functions of the health service are chronically underfunded. The NHS Reinstatement Bill would reverse the creeping marketisation of the health service and reinstate the NHS based on its founding principles – putting the public back at the heart of the health service. That means an NHS publicly paid
for and provided. I’m really pleased to have the leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn as one of the signatories on this cross party Bill, having signed up before becoming leader. The local Labour Party in Brighton & Hove has also passed a motion in support of the Bill. But it’s as yet unclear whether the national party is backing the bill as Heidi Alexander, the shadow secretary of state, for Health has not yet given her support. A week today, MPs who believe in a public NHS have the opportunity to stand up for our NHS. Thousands of people have now signed a petition calling for MPs to attend the House of Commons to vote for the Bill. On an issue like saving our NHS it’s absolutely crucial that we work together across party lines. I have no doubt that Aneurin Bevan was right when he said that ‘the NHS will last as long as there are folk left with the faith to fight for it’. I hope that MPs show the same enthusiasm for our NHS as these local campaigners have. Our NHS can be saved – but only if the MPs in Parliament care for it as much as the people they represent do. Please join the NHS Bill send off at Brighton Station on Friday 11th March at 7.45am.

Victory as fence at ‘puppy park’ saved Bex Bastable
bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable
The fence at Withdean Park will remain in place after a 1,900-strong petition to retain it. The area, named the “puppy park”, was set to have the fence removed after the council said
it could not afford to repair or replace it, following health and safety concerns. But the council has now come to an agreement with campaigners, who will take responsibilty for the fence, as well as providing the workforce and raising the funds to replace it.
In the bag Green shoppers’ treat LIZ FINLAYSON/VERVATE
Six-year-old Lilly Taylor was one of 1,000 shoppers who flocked to the Bag Factory at Churchill Square, to swap plastic bags for a Brighton-themed cotton alternative. Last weekend, more than 3,500 plastic bags were collected at the Willy Wonka-esque pop-up shop, and Churchill Square bosses said the one-off event was a “huge success”.
The price of renting in Brighton and Hove A person renting a twobedroom house in Brighton will pay about £61,422 in rent over five years - which is 24 per cent of the price of an average home in the city (£257,288). That’s according to research by housing charity Shelter, which claimed millions of renters are caught in a “rent trap”, paying sky-high housing costs and unable to keep up with rocketing house prices. Campbell Robb, Shelter’s chief executive, said: “When just five years of rent could get you the deposit on a house, it’s no wonder the south east’s renters feel like they’re getting
a raw deal, paying through the nose for something they can never call their own. “Our drastic shortage of affordable homes is leaving millions of people stuck in their childhood bedrooms in a bid to save money, or in expensive and unstable private renting with little hope of ever saving for a home to put down roots in. “It doesn’t have to be this way – the government can turn things around by investing in homes that people on ordinary wages can actually afford to buy, or rent for the long-term.”
Angela Cox, said: “The council is willing to be flexible if we want to think creatively about the size and design of the fence. We want to make it the best community space it can be.” To find out more, and to get involved, visit: on.fb. me/1TR1bPJ

Warren Morgan
Labour leader of Brighton and Hove City Council
Greens to blame for our deal with Tories
T
here has been a lot of discussion and speculation over what happened at the Budget Council meeting last Thursday, and what it all means. Let me put the record
straight. Despite the cuts of more than £20 million and council tax increases forced on us by the Conservative government, there are a huge amount of positive measures in the budget on things like grants to the community and voluntary sector, social care services and basic environmental services that we needed to get approved. Adding in the money for schools, housing and capital, the total budget is around £800 million. There were six amendments from the Conservatives, including two that between them cut the number of funded trades union posts in the council from the 10 that were established in 2009 under the Tories to around three. The money saved was to direct funding to a range of things including gully cleaning, verge cutting and public toilets. In total the money involved was roughly £400,000. The Greens said publicly and well in
advance of the meeting that they would vote against the budget as a whole, whatever happened, as they could not support a budget that contained any cuts. That gave the Conservatives the certain knowledge that they had a majority – 11 Greens and 20 Tories – to outvote the 23 Labour councillors in the final vote. Finally, and despite pledging not to get involved in the budget at all, the Greens indicated the day before the meeting that they would be supporting two Tory amendments. So my Labour administration went into
Whether a senior manager or street cleaner, the effect is the same, someone loses their job to fund some grass mowing
the budget knowing that the Tories would win two amendments, and the Greens and Tories would unite to vote down the budget as a whole. That is exactly what happened. At that point in proceedings, several crucial things took place. Despite us having voted down the Tory amendments cutting trade union time, as soon as the budget was voted down by the Green and Conservative groups, all of the Tory amendments were put back on the table. Including the cut of six to eight union posts. The Greens said they would play no further part, would not negotiate, and would still vote as planned against the budget. The Tories insisted that they would continue to vote the budget down too, knowing that if one was not set, the government would then step in and make even deeper cuts instead. Going to a second budget meeting would simply have taken us to the same point, with higher stakes. I had a choice. Negotiate or be voted down by a Green/Tory alliance. Two parties with a common aim – to score a political hit on the Labour administration whilst distancing themselves from the consequences of their actions.
I negotiated a deal that protected nine of the 10 union posts, but which made over £240,000 in further cuts to “management and administration” demanded by the Tories. That sounds painless enough, but in reality that means more jobs lost. Whether a senior manager, admin assistant or street cleaner, the effect is the same, someone loses their job to fund some grass mowing. The fact is that none of those further cuts were necessary. All those posts lost in the negotiated settlement – including the trades union post – could have been saved. The Tories could easily have been deprived of their ability to push for further job cuts in order to get verges cut. All that had to happen was for the Greens to abstain on the main budget vote. They did not have to support the budget, simply abstain, to give the Labour administration the ability to vote down Tory amendments and have a three-vote majority to pass the budget. They refused. Next time someone says Labour and the Greens should work together to prevent Tory cuts, remember this sorry and shameful example of Green councillors putting their own political interests ahead of people’s jobs.

Geoffrey Theobald
Leader of the Conservative Group on Brighton and Hove City Council
Budget decisions made for the good of city’s residents
A
fter six and a half hours of robust debate and tough negotiation, I’m pleased to say that the budget was set for the city council for the forthcoming year. I have always said that we would be a sensible opposition and work with other political parties if we think it is in the best interests of the city’s residents, businesses and visitors and we demonstrated that last week. As I said in my previous column before the budget meeting, I think the Labour administration is finally starting to move in the right direction in terms of reforming and modernising some of the services that the council delivers to residents. It would, therefore, have been churlish, not to say irresponsible, of us as a group to vote against setting a budget for the city. A resolution hadn’t looked so promising earlier in the meeting after a Labour member stood up and denounced the changes we were suggesting to the budget and then voted against them all. It was therefore strange to say the least that just a couple of hours later they put their hands up to support of nearly all these self-same amendments. However, regardless of how we got there, getting these changes passed
achieved a better outcome for residents. We were able to persuade the Labour administration to restore funding for mental health support, vital respite care for parents of disabled children, housing support to protect against homelessness, community and voluntary sector grants, public toilets, verge cutting and the council’s noise patrol service, which Labour wanted to scrap altogether. I’m sure that most right-minded people in the city would regard these as essential core services. It should not be forgotten that, just before the budget discussions, we also succeeded in persuading the Labour administration to do a U-turn with regard to their proposal to reduce the park ranger service from nine to three. Despite these concessions it was unfortunate that Labour couldn’t bring themselves to support two further proposals we put forward on increasing the frequency of gully cleaning, to try and prevent flooding in the city, and also on freezing the cost of business, trader and visitor parking permits. Now that the budget has been set, we must now get on with implementing the changes and helping to improve the Brighton and Hove economy. There are so many exciting new developments on the horizon which should lead to a positive future for the people of Brighton and Hove.

Stop The Cull march arrives in Brighton Estelle Hakner @EstelleHakner
Armed with badger masks, placards and an unyielding spirit, protesters took to the streets of Brighton to march against the government’s badger cull policy.
Their aim was simple: to persuade politicians to put an end to the policy which has seen more than 4,000 badgers culled in England because of their link with bovine tuberculosis. The march on Saturday, organised by the Badger Trust, saw protesters march from the Theatre
Rooms with a view sought for Festival Turner-Prize winning artist Gillian Wearing is seeking people to be part of a unique, global, collective filmmaking project – one of the largest of its kind ever to be produced – for a new commission as part of this year’s Brighton Festival and HOUSE festival. The project aims to capture a snapshot of views from people’s homes all over the world – from urban spaces to remote countryside – and invites the public to film a short clip of either their curtains or blinds opening to reveal a view from their window.
Like the curtains going up at the beginning of a stage play, each view will be a pictorial unveiling of a landscape, cityscape or even a brick wall. The results will feature in a new exhibition as part of the 50th edition of Brighton Festival and HOUSE festival called A Room with Your Views – Wearing’s first solo exhibition on the South Coast – which will take place at the Brighton University Galleries from May 7-29. L
ast weekend I joined ten thousand high spirited customers at VegfestUK for an infectiously positive atmosphere at The Brighton Centre, where I discovered a jam-packed schedule of talks, friendly and knowledgeable stallholders, vegan publishers and plenty of activist speakers. I bought hand bakes with chia seeds for the dog and grabbed a quick massage while I took in the range of punters; everyone from emo teens to several generations of families were having a good chill and shop about. I caught up with Jacky at the EDEN perfume stall, and stippled my hand into a rainbow with the intense colours at Bohemian Chic Minerals. I chatted with doTerra and will attend their essential oil class shortly. I met Aveen and her mum with the affordable OBCLondon products. At Terre Verdi Alessandra converted me to the intense FranChouliPom serum packaged in
black. I bumbled through and should have bought or at least read a programme, but predictably lost control over the free catering samples before salivating over the boutique makers with interesting product formulations, such as the fresh botanical actives in the delicious Ringana Tooth Oil from www.purenaturalfresh.co.uk I didn’t reach Yaoh, the UK’s original hemp company with Ethical Consumer Magazine Best Buy sun cream, lip balms, shampoos and liquid soaps. Similarly I didn’t stop for JĀSÖN, which is my bad for not celebrating its 50th anniversary in vegan and BUAV certified goods.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE INDEPENDENT
Opinion
History
By Graham Chainey
The many joys of a printed newspaper
T
he Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers’ decision to ditch their print editions later this month and become online only will depress lovers of
print media. As a schoolboy, I used to spend my scant pocket money not on sweets but on newspapers, being from an early age infatuated with the smell of fresh print, with their mastheads, headlines, bylines, late-news boxes, cartoons, crosswords, gossip columns, ads. Later, I would sometimes read up to five a day. When overseas, I would buy local titles, even when I didn’t understand the language, just to be able to get my daily jag. A day deprived of papers would invite withdrawal symptoms. Modern papers, however, have become increasingly expensive. When The Daily Telegraph launched in 1855, it cost tuppence in old money; a century later (I am holding at this minute the issue for Thursday, February 7, 1952) it still cost tuppence. The tabloid Daily Graphic (same date) was a halfpenny cheaper, while The Times (now I am holding that) cost threepence. So in just over half a century,
The Daily Graphic reports the death of George VI
the Telegraph’s cover price has escalated by 168 times, that of The Times by 96 times. As I recall, the three London evening papers I used to binge on aged ten cost about a penny-halfpenny each. Additionally, most modern papers are bloated with celebrity trivia of no interest to me or to most of the traditional and now aging newspaper readership. Few of us are
interested in some actress’s latest tweet, or Kate’s new hat, or the banner revelation that some soap star has been unfaithful, or some footballing moron has disgraced himself in a nightclub. Weekend editions in particular are so bloated with lifestyle sections, magazines and inserts that you virtually need a trolley to carry them home. I long ago stopped buying them. It’s significant that the Independent’s daring experiment to cut the fat, by producing the inexpensive slimline “i” digest (pity about the name), has proved a success, with a circulation five times greater than the parent paper, at a quarter of the price. (Good news that this offshoot, which has been acquired by Johnston Press, proprietors also of the paper you are now reading, will continue in print.) Most newspaper websites, meanwhile, give me no joy. They have been overrun with tacky inappropriate trash, like digital knotweed. I’ve just been to check out the Independent’s site. As I was trying to read readers’ letters on the subject of the paper’s closure, an unsolicited video opened between the lines. Everywhere I looked, there were irrelevant distractions. No, I do not want to view “27 Embarrassing
Dinners” or “20 Used Cars to Avoid”. You don’t get this impertinent intrusion from a proper paper paper. How in future – if (as the lamentable trend seems to be going) newspapers become online entities only, accessible by subscription – will one be able to chop and choose one’s daily fare, to read a particular issue that happens to take one’s fancy in the newsagents? How take cuttings? (I have taken cuttings for decades. I am an obsessive clipper. I have at least 20,000 cuttings stored in folders.) How solve the crossword or sudoku on a screen? And how will we line our cupboard shelves, light the fire, polish the windows, pad parcels, or do the other miscellaneous tasks newsprint was meant for? Old newspapers, that have somehow survived the stove, the cat’s litter, the recycling bin, provide a wonderfully evocative link with the past. With our communal history. Take those 1952 specimens reporting the death of King George VI. As I turn their now yellowing and wonderfully retro pages, I am in physical contact with items from that very day. You will never achieve that kind of immediacy on some twinkling little screen.

Seven innovative start-ups from Brighton and Hove have been selected to take residency at FIELD, the new rent-free temporary workspaces launching at Preston Barracks on Lewes Road next month. The FIELD project aims to empower Brighton and Hove’s entrepreneurial makers, inventors and product designers, by giving them 12 months free access to a diverse workspace to develop and bring their projects to market. The chosen businesses moving into FIELD include The Bug Boys, a sustainable food manufacturer, innovating the farming of edible insects, through to Play Talk Learn, an education tech company developing children’s toys that bring mathematical patterns to life. Intrepid Camera also join FIELD next month, producers of handmade wooden film cameras that combine traditional craft and laser cutting, along with Control Freq, a bespoke “Internet of Things” door entry system that users can

access through their mobile. Flux Cycle Works use new techniques like 3D printing to produce affordable cargo and commuter bikes, while Rogue Saddler create handcrafted, functional and stylish leather goods. Finally, Union Motion is an engineering group incorporating metal fabrication and 3D printing to revolutionise the production of electric motorbikes. Dominic Warman Roup, just one of the many entrepreneurs behind Union Motion, said: “We can’t wait to move in and get started. It’s going to be a really interesting working environment, with
lots of cross pollination of ideas with our fellow makers. We’re hoping to benefit from this collaborative experience – it’s invaluable.” The temporary FIELD residencies will help determine what facilities and support Brighton and Hove’s entrepreneurial community needs from a permanent facility and will be incorporated within the new buildings when construction at Preston Barracks begins. James Nettleton, who leads U+I’s work with creative entrepreneurs and is overseeing FIELD said: “The makers were
selected based on their use of innovation in their design or manufacturing process, bringing new approaches to their fields of sustainability, technology and design. “These start-ups embody what this project is all about: innovation and new ways of tackling challenges. “Whether it’s finding solutions to the global food crisis or finding affordable manufacturing processes for cargo bikes and photography equipment, the new companies were selected as they are all meaningfully different and utilise innovation for the greater good.” FIELD will also provide a collaborative home for some of Brighton’s established organisations. These include The Wood Store, a reclaimed wood furniture maker and recycling enterprise, which was previously based in Circus Street. It is also home to zero-waste drinks producer Old Tree, the botanical brewery of Brighton restaurant Silo, as well as Community 21, which will continue working on the Place-Maker-Space project, an urban laboratory and workshop for envisioning and making better places.

Homecoming for art shop in The Lanes A new art shop hopes to place itself at the heart of creativity in the city. Cass Art has opened to Market Street in a move described as “the most exciting new store opening yet” by CEO Mark Cass. It is the tenth to be launched, but is seen as a homecoming for the founder. He said: “My dad, who developed the Cass Sculpture Foundation at Goodwood, used to live by the pier. “I first saw this property about two years ago. I liked where it is, next to a gallery and surrounded by students. Dad thinks it is fantastic, he’s 92 and has told me he wants lunch whenever I am down.”
Another reason to open in the city was its artistic reputation. He said: “Brighton is bursting with a brilliant and vibrant artist community, arts festival, as well as a hub of creative businesses. “We have had customers asking us to open up in Brighton for many years, and we are excited to be in the Lanes in the heart of it all.” All of the staff members are artists themselves and the mission statement for the business is “let’s fill this town with artists”. However as local artist Jake Spicer points out: “Brighton is already a town full of artists; we’ve just been waiting for the right art shop.”

Labour’s uneasy alliance with the Conservatives More cuts loom as the city council budget is agreed, in fiery six-hour meeting
Bex Bastable
bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable
It was an evening full of twists and turns, but after six hours, a singing protest, a failed vote, and a Labour-Conservative deal, Brighton and Hove City Council successfully set its budget. This means council tax will rise by four per cent from April (or £60 for the average taxpayer) – the most a local authority can increase it without a referendum. Half of that figure is ring-fenced for adult social care services. An ‘average’ Band D taxpayer in Brighton and Hove will now pay £1,627.66 a year for their council, police and fire service. Residents in Rottingdean Parish pay extra for their parish council, and those in Hanover Crescent, Marine Square and Royal Crescent pay an additional cost to maintain the gardens. This also means controversial elements of the budget will go ahead. These are: a review of learning disabilities provision saving £2 million; a review of learning disability day services saving £580,000; the closure of Tower House Day Centre saving £230,000 (subject to consultation); a Special Educational Needs review saving £500,000; Youth Services review saving £400,000; efficiencies in Cityclean management and staff costs saving £450,000; and changes to the Council Tax Reduction scheme reduced saving £540,000. As Warren Morgan, Labour leader of the council, began his opening speech, he was interrupted by protesters
Let there be no doubt that jobs will be cut, and services will be hit. CLLR WARREN MORGAN Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council singing a song about council cuts. Many Labour councillors left the room, but eventually order was restored, with mayor Lynda Hyde threatening to call the police if there was any more disruption. Cllr Morgan then made his speech, and addressed the £68 million of cuts to be made by 2020. He said: “There is no hiding the scale and extent of the cuts we face this year and in the next three. Let there be no doubt that jobs will be lost and services will be hit. We will no longer be able to do what we did in 2010 in 2019. However, we do not, as a local authority, stand alone in this crisis. The crisis in local government funding stretches far beyond our boundaries. The policies of the current government seem to many incoherent and unfair, let alone sustainable.” After Labour’s opening speeches, the Conservative and Greens then had a chance to make their points; the Conservatives promoted their amendments to the budget, with the Greens opposing it
altogether. All three parties made swipes at one another. Making the Green Group’s position clear, Cllr Phelim Mac Cafferty, said: “I will not pit service against service or worker against worker. This budget is unsalvageable.” The Conservatives had six amendments – two of which where initially supported by the Greens, so passed – with four that failed. Labour voted against all six amendments. This triggered the Tories into voting against Labour’s budget (alongside the Greens) so it was 23 for and 29 against. The parties then went into private discussions to broker a deal, and Labour agreed to accept the Conservative amendments – with changes. These Conservative amendments included: saving some of the five toilets proposed for closure; reinstating the Council’s Noise Patrol Service; investing in grass verge cutting and gully cleansing; reversing cuts to preventative mental health funding; retaining funds for residential and respite breaks funding for children with disabilities;reversingLabour’s proposed cuts to support for homeless households ; and protecting the St. John’s Day Service for older people. These measures will be paid for through savings in senior management costs and through reductions in the 10 full-time trade union officials employed by the council – the Conservatives wanted to cut this by £143,000, but Labour agreed to £30,000. Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, leader of the Conservative Group, said: “Despite the Labour administration having originally voted against all
Kings House, Brighton and Hove City Council’s headquarters
of our amendments, we are delighted that they have shown common sense by agreeing virtually all of our amendments. “This means that we have succeeded with saving funding for mental health support, vital respite care for parents of disabled children, housing support to protect against homelessness, public toilets, verge cutting and noise patrol services. “The Conservatives also succeeded in retaining funds for the Community Grants Programme, a vital resource for those who need it most.” Cllr Morgan, leader of the council, said: “I am pleased that we have reached agreement on the budget for next year. I recognise that residents will be paying more through the increased council tax but this is a tough time for public services. A reduction of £20 million in funding from central government alongside increasing costs means that
we have had to take some difficult decisions. “This budget protects our services wherever we can, builds new services where able, redesigns services where we can do better for less, and joins in new partnerships with the voluntary sector, communities, neighbourhoods and residents, local businesses and not-for-profit trusts. We’re finding new ways of designing services fit for the future and fit for our local need.” The final vote on the budget, with Conservative amendments, was 43 for and nine against. After the meeting Phelim Mac Cafferty accused Labour and Conservatives of ‘a last minute stitch-up’ on trade unions. He said: “Greens opposed the budget, urging Labour to reconsider the magnitude of cuts on the most vulnerable residents in the city. In the deadlock, Conservatives saw an opportunity to push
for their wish list of budget proposals. What followed next was less of a negotiation than an unconditional surrender by the Labour administration quicker than they could find a white flag to wave.” Cllr Morgan, however, said the Green Group had handed the power to the Conservatives to cut more jobs, as they opposed Labour’s budget. He said: “All that had to happen would have been for the Greens to abstain on the main budget vote. They did not have to support the budget, simplygivetheLabour administration the ability to vote down Tory amendments and the three-vote majority to pass the budget by not taking part. They refused.” Cllr Mac Cafferty, responded, and said: “We can hardly be accused of handing anyone power when we carried on doing exactly what we said we would do all along - which was to vote against the budget.”

‘Declaration of war’ with unions over last-minute decision Brighton and Hove Unison has said Labour’s “last-minute pact” with the Conservatives to axe one trade union official from the city council was “a declaration of war”. At last Thursday’s budget meeting, the Conservative group tabled an amendment to take £143,000 out of the budget for trade union officials. After initially voting against the amendment, when the budget failed (as both Conservative and Green councillors opposed
it), Labour agreed to take £30,000 out of the budget. The city council employs ten trade union officials. This saving, alongside £120,000 savings in management and administration costs, will go towards saving public toilets from closure, verge cutting, and towards mental health services. Richard Woolven, Unison branch officer, said: “Consultations had been on going about the level of facility time within
the authority but this preemptive strike by the administration shows what they think of meaningful dialogue. “This amounts to a declaration of war with the trade union movement in Brighton and Hove.” A Labour Group spokesperson said: “Labour fought hard against the Tory proposals to make significant cuts to the ten union facility time posts. Whilst we agree that the amount of union facility time, which
reached its peak under the last Conservative administration, needs to be reviewed in line with our shrinking workforce, we believe it is right to do that through negotiations, not just by axing posts in a budget amendment. We therefore only put a single post on the table as part of the budget negotiations. There is a period of change for our staff coming up, and unions have a key role in helping our staff through that.”
A speech by Warren Morgan, Labour leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, was interrupted by members of the public singing “Solidarity Forever”. The protest was organised by a group who said cuts to local services will have an unfair impact on women. The group said in a statement: “We have interrupted this council meeting to draw attention to the powerlessness of our local councillors to prevent the cuts imposed by the government. “This is an emergency for the women of Brighton and Hove. We cannot afford to let the council keep pretending it’s ‘business as usual’. This is a crisis and it needs to be responded to as a crisis. We need our councillors to acknowledge that more and more cuts to their funding will mean the destruction of lives and communities. By telling residents that cuts are inevitable and necessary the
council has allowed itself to become a mouthpiece of the Conservative government, instead of representing the people of this city.” One of the singers, Rose, said: “Cuts to public services and benefits are an emergency for women. Cuts to Council Tax Reduction will mean women go hungry so their children can eat. Cuts to adult social care mean women work unpaid to fill the gaps. Cuts to libraries and children’s centres will mean women are isolated at home. Cuts to mental health services, youth services and children’s services will mean family breakdown and women losing their children. Poverty and the axing of local services will directly result in women being unable to leave abusive relationships, due to isolation, lack of support and simply being unable to afford to get out. This will mean the deaths of women in Brighton and Hove.”

Andrea Newland leads the charge as women seek to bring an end to war. The means at their disposal – as Brighton-based Actors of Dionysus take to the stage with Aristophanes’ Lysistrata – is to go on sex strike. The show is at Roedean School, Brighton, on Saturday, March 5, at 7.30pm (01273 667655). Playing Lysistrata – who becomes Lucy in Tamsin Shasha’s production – is Brighton-based actress Andrea. She said: “When I started, I didn’t know anything about the play, but it is beautifully
translated, and it is a really funny play. Lucy is a great character to play. There are so many different facets to her. “When we first see her, we don’t know who she is or what she is going to do. She just comes across as very normal. “But we see her developing, and when you read the play, you start to feel that the whole thing is like her rite of passage, that she is finding herself, that she is finding her own strength.” So how does she realise that the power is actually with her? “Even before the play starts, she was wanting to get everyone together to pass on the information she has realised, that actually
everyone can do something about all the fighting going on all the time. “The men have been away for so long and effectively it is the women that are running the country. “But they are running it at a domestic level while all the men who are away are running the country at a political level...and they are doing it rather badly.” Andrea is delighted to be part of the company. “I was aware of the company Actors of Dionysus because I am Brightonbased, and I was interested in finding out about the companies and what was going on down here.” Tickets cost £10-12. Enjoyable evening from new masters of shoegaze Review by Nick Linazasoro
Inheaven, Bleach Brighton, upstairs at The Hare and Hounds, February 24 I couldn’t resist an evening’s entertainment from some of the best masters of shoegaze around at the moment. First up were the Southampton band Fever (or Connor, Alex, Fraser and Jamie to their mates). If the likes of Muse is your bag, then Fever are the band for you. They played a tight set, which included their track ‘Sucker’, which is up on SoundCloud now. Next up were the excellent Brighton band Morning Smoke. They ran through half a dozen mesmerising compositions that reminded me of very early Cure songs. They started with ‘How Does It Feel’, a pacey little fourminute number that really grabbed everyone’s attention. Next up was ‘Shame’, then ‘Never Enough’, followed by ‘Plastic Womb’ and onto the Sex Pistol-esque ‘Soft Decay’. I was waiting for Johnny Rotten to snarl ‘Right Nowwww’, it was that good! The final track was ‘Waste My Time’ and then, in a blink of an eye, they were gone. Well done Milo, Max, Isaac

The headline act Inheaven – James (lead vocals/ guitarist), Chloe (vocals/ bass), Jake (guitarist) and Joe (drummer) – hail from Forest Hill, south east London, and have been gaining quite a bit of media interest of late on the back of their two catchy releases ‘Bitter Town’ and ‘Regeneration’. Hopefully there will be more of the same when their debut album finally arrives. Tonight we were treated to just seven songs: ‘All There Is’, ‘Stupid Things’, ‘Baby’s Alright’, ‘Real Love’, ‘Drift’, ‘Bitter Town’
and ‘Regeneration’. I was particularly looking forward to Inheaven as I like those last two tracks. However, I was so blown away by Morning Smoke that it took me up until track six of the Inheaven set to get into them. But their 7” grey vinyl ‘Bitter Town’ 2015 single grabbed me. Their final track ‘Regeneration’ is an anthem, possibly in the mould of The Who’s ‘My Generation’ (yes really). There’s a great mixture of The Big Pink, The Horrors, The Jesus & Mary Chain and Echo & The Bunnymen in there too.

The cream of the city’s restaurants are honoured
L
ast Monday (February 22), BrewDog in Brighton hosted the inaugural “Brighton’s Best” restaurant awards. The aim of this new set of awards is to celebrate the top 20 restaurants that epitomise the city’s burgeoning restaurant scene. Co-founders Andy Lines (food writer and author), Euan MacDonald (60 second reviews) and Patrick McGuigan (food writer) are passionate about the Brighton scene; and in creating these awards want to draw local and national attention to cement Brighton and Hove’s position on the culinary map. The awards are unique in that they are voted for by the very same people that are a part of the food revolution. Local chefs, food writers, restaurateurs, business leaders, critics and gourmands were asked to vote for their top seven restaurants and points were allocated to each nomination. Awards were also awarded for top chef, top barkeep and top welcome. The awards night was one to remember with the guests representing a who’s who of the Brighton food scene. BrewDog was full to breaking point with the bar staff working at maximum speed to keep this crowd of foodies well lubricated; Brighton Gin were also on hand for those seeking an alternate tipple. The evening was hosted with great aplomb by co-founder Euan MacDonald who overcame technical difficulties to keep the raucous crowd entertained. He was ably assisted by Brighton favourites; comedian Dave Lamb, voice of TV’s Come Dine with Me; Great British Bake Off contestant and Brighton baker Kate Henry, plus founder of the Polpo group of

Coffee Chronicles
A parable about life and coffee
T
It was a night to remember at the Brew Dog in Brighton
restaurants Russell Norman. The atmosphere was fantastic and every award was greeted with cheers from the enthusiastic and supportive crowd. First place, and so officially Brighton’s best restaurant, went to Michael Bremner’s 64 Degrees, with Michael also taking the award for top chef. Michael was delighted and overwhelmed to have been named the number one restaurant in Brighton. He said: “My team work so hard to give our customers the best dining experience possible, so to win best restaurant is just amazing. I’m over the moon.” Bremner’s menu of innovative small plates puts a focus on fresh, local produce, and was recently awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin inspectors. The Chilli Pickle, The Salt
Room, The Set and Silo completed the top five. On a personal note I was really pleased to see a couple of Brighton’s most exciting young chefs recognised with Isaac At and Flank coming in at number 20 and 18 respectively. Tom Griffiths, head chef and owner of Flank, told me that he will be taking over the kitchen at Silo for one night on the March 20. He will be showcasing an eightcourse tasting menu celebrating the sustainable and innovative dishes that Flank has become known for. The Gingerman group were well represented with the Ginger Pig at number 11 and The Gingerman at seven; and some great results for The Little Fish Market at nine; Semolina at 12; and Fatto a Mano, the only pizzeria on the list, coming in at number 19.
here was once a man. His life had become difficult, testing, and unmanageable. He had lost his job, his wife, and his will to continue to fight. In order to seek solace, to find hope, he requested the company of his rabbi. The rabbi duly obliged and offered the man his findings. Having listened to the man’s tale of woe, the rabbi proffered the following advice: Place a potato in a pan of water and boil it for an hour. Then put an egg in a pan of water and boil it for an hour. Next, put some coffee beans in a pan of water and boil it for an hour. Lastly, come back to me and we’ll talk. The man, we should point out, was pretty desperate and therefore willing to try just about anything. The rabbi, we should also mention, was perfectly well and of sound mind. This sort of thing always makes sense in the end, so bear with. The man boiled the pans of water and created a mushy potato, a rocksolid egg, and a pan of coffee. On returning to the rabbi, the man was eager to be enlightened on the relevance of his experiment. The rabbi gratified him thus: Some people are like the potato; when faced with adversity, they go soft, they crumble, they disintegrate. Others are like the egg; when surrounded by difficulties, they become hard and turn bitter. The rest of us are like the coffee; instead of allowing our surroundings or our circumstances to change us, we allow our surroundings or our circumstances to be changed by us. We make the coffee. We are the coffee. We take the struggle of life and brew it into the perfect blend of love, laughter, acceptance and hope. The man’s fortunes probably changed and, thanks to his cookery lessons with the rabbi, he got back his job, his wife and his chutzpah. Nobody knows for sure though, because it never really happened. Our heavily paraphrased parable, plagiarised from a rabbi in London, and based on traditional Jewish values, is our parting gift to you. May you take from it what you need, pass it on to others, and discard that which is of no use. And may you always remember that you are the coffee, Chroniclers, you are the coffee.

ROADTEST:LEXUSRX450H
THECUTTINGEDGE
By Alan Candy Motoring writer
The Lexus RX has sharpened up its act with new looks that will blow away fans of the ultimate hybrid vehicle. The flagship three-in-one 450h Premier is a visually stunning and arguably the most advanced motor of its kind on the road today, with a hostofactiveandpassivesafety features, plus unashamed ultimate luxury. Why three-in-one? Because this full-on Lexus combines the flexibility of a large SUVwiththecomfortofapremium quality saloon – and it’s
a hybrid powered by a powerful petrol engine working full time in tandem with an electric motor. A fiver’s change from £58k buys you the top RX450h Premier, though my headturning test model featured extras costing £1,940 in the shape of a panoramic roof and a highly distinctive Copper Brown paint finish. This fourth generation Lexus boasts far more dynamic looks, extra width and longer wheelbase, improved cabin space and higher levels of comfort and luxury, plus the latest Lexus Safety System+ package. Top range models feature all-wheel drive, leather upholstery, heated and

What in theory should be one of the most vital and useful innovations – the largest head-up display on the road
today – turns out to be a flawed gem. Thetrafficsignrecognition system uses a camera to spot main warning and command signs, which are replicated on the windscreen. Unfortunately it’s unreliable (I had the same problem withaRAV4andanA4recently) and often gives misleading information. Travelling in a 30mph zone I was advised it was 40mph; a 60mph stretch registered as 40mph. My conclusion? If it doesn’t work 100 per cent, itisn’t worthhaving. ROADTEST:VOLVO XC90T8TWINENGINE
Benefits ofXC90 are crystalclear by Rob Auchterlonie
Motoring writer
How many cars have you driven that come with an Orrefors crystal gearshift lever as standard? South of zero, I’d guess, but it’s one of the classy little touches you’ll find in Volvo’s latest range topper – the £64,200 twin-engined XC90 T8. It showcases the future for Volvo, one of the features ofwhichwillbethedistinctive Thor hammer headlights. It’s built on Volvo’s SPA platform (Scaleable Product Architecture) which means it will be used for future cars in the pipeline that we’ll be seeing before too long. 2015 was Volvo’s best year in the UK for 21 years, thanks to the V40 and the XC60. Nearly 3,000 XC90s have been sold here so far since its relaunch last year as a truly classy top banana true sevenseater SUV. The latest addition to the rangeistheT8andtheengines
in question hereare Volvo’sT6 petrol unit linked up with an 87hp electric motor, which on a10ampfeedfoundinmostUK homes will charge up in three and a half hours. TheT8canbedrivenforup to 27 miles on electric power alone – enough for most people’s daily commute – so on many journeys it will not emit any exhaust pollutants at all. It has a different mechanical setup to other XC90s. Its petrol engine drives the front wheels only, while its electric motor drives the rear wheels. This means that, depending on the road conditions and the drive mode selected, the T8 can operate in front, rear or all-wheel drive. It is said to be the safest Volvoeverbuilt, andoffersthe most comprehensive standard safety package in the car industry. It also features two world-first safety technologies – run-off road protection and auto brake at junctions – which are part of Volvo’s advanced suite of intelligent safety systems. Dominating the dash area
is the nine-inch info module thatcomesasstandardandit’s a brilliant piece of kit. It houses pretty well all the functions apart from starting the thing up and it removes with one swish of your finger across the black screen the need to clutter up the dash area with
randomly scattered buttons and switches. I love it, and my initial foray with the XC90 a while back which left me baffled in some areas of its use was quickly forgotten. If you can operate a tablet, this is just as easy. OptfortheT8TwinEngine
and not only do you enjoy better performance, economy and substantially lower tax costs, also the standard kit is better too. Irrespective of the trim level chosen, all T8 Twin Engine XC90s get a powered tilt and slide panoramic sunroof,
Four-zone climate control with a cooled glovebox, 12.3” active TFT driver information display, that Orrefors crystal glass gearlever knob, seven drive mode settings and adjustable steering force, third-row air-conditioning, and auxiliary fuel-fired preconditioning heater. XC90 is a very spacious, as well as space-efficient, vehicle. The long wheelbase and the comparatively small engine bay – a result of Volvo’s decision to only use fourcylinder engines – means cabin space is impressive. It’s like a gentlemen’s club inthere, soquietandrelaxing. It’s as a business user that youreallyscorewiththis, they say. Because of its low CO2 figure, it qualifies for a 100 per cent first year allowance, so the entire cost of purchase can be written off in the first year of ownership. Some cynics might say for hybrid, read tax dodge, but not me of course. Its clean, minimalist Scandinavian design sets it well apart from its competitors.

American dream has come true for Sullivan Football
Steve Bailey
steve.bailey@jpress.co.uk Twitter: @SteveBailey67
John Sullivan is loving life in America, after quitting his professional football career at an age when most players are reaching their peak. Sullivan, from Lancing, played for his boyhood team Brighton&HoveAlbionbefore spells at seven other clubs. It was a move to Portsmouth in 2013 and a subsequent loan spell at Cambridge which saw the now 27-year-old fall out of love with the game he had played all his life. When Pompey paid up his contract a year early in the summer of 2014, Sullivan, then 26, a regular visitor to America on holidays, made the decision to move to Las Vegas. He has worked in real estate for The Craig Tann Group in Nevada since September, selling houses worth $56,000 up to $510,000. His job is commissionbased only but the former goalkeeper has sold 11 houses in just five months. Sullivan admits some of his friends find it crazy that he has turned his back on a career in football, especially as he is now working 13-plus hours a day and getting up at 4.15am. However, he said: “To anyone else it’s crazy. I’ll go home now and people will say ‘why did you quit, you had the best job in the world?’ But I probably fell out of love with the game slightly and I thought it was the right time to do something else. “There’s a lot of similarities between football and this job, in the sense that you have to push yourself every day – and I’m self employed, which is similar to when I was playing football. “At the end of the day, there were so many players with a similar ability to me out on the market, who were free transfers. I still have confidence now that I could play at a good level but I just felt it was the right time to leave that career. “That was my biggest fear, leaving football. But the only thing I can see myself doing now is this career in real estate for the rest of my life, without a shadow of a doubt. “There’s lots of things I’ve learned in this job and I’ve set high standards as there’s so many opportunities here to grow. I’m working hard to try to build a business and a career for myself.” Sullivan played 17 times for
John Sullivan pictured in the offices at the Craig Tann Group in Las Vegas
Brighton after playing youth football for Thistle Youth and Lancing Rangers. His Albion debut, a 3-2 win over high-flying Leicester in League One in 2008, was a highlight. He said: “I was behind Michel Kuipers who, asabigBrightonfan,Iwatched on the terraces. I remember in the morning we trained and he said he wasn’t fit. “We went 2-0 down and I should have given away a penalty. That would have been 3-0 and it could have been my last game for Brighton, my one and only. But we ended up turning it around and we won 3-2.” His only regret in football was that he was not at Albion longer. He said: “It’s not that I’m bitter about it but I just felt my time at Brighton was cut short. I think a lot of us in that team, the local lads, were a bit hard done by. “I played 17 games for Brighton so I look back with good memories, but I feel like I could have played a bit more and was a bit unlucky. I felt like it was a club I could have spent my whole career at.” From leaving Albion, Sullivan was part of the Millwall and Charlton squads who were both promoted from League One. He also had spells with Yeovil and Colchester, before a
loan move to AFC Wimbledon, who he helped keep in the league in 2012-13. That summer, Sullivan was offered a full-time contract with the Dons but opted to head to Fratton Park. He said: “It’s easy in hindsight but I don’t think anyone would have made a different decision. “It ended up being a worse financial decision moving to Portsmouth because I had a flat in Sutton, which was 15 minutes from Wimbledon’s ground. “I had a good rapport with everyone at Wimbledon but Portsmouth told me I’d be their number-one keeper, playing in front of 16,000 to 17,000 fans. “However, Portsmouth were just signing anyone, really. I don’t know if they’d even watched me. Then, I got the number 25 shirt and, as a goalkeeper, the number-one shirt is a big thing. Straight away it made me think that something wasn’t right. “I ended up being in and out of the team and didn’t get any stability.” A loan spell at Cambridge in early 2014 was the beginning of the end of Sullivan’s professional career. He did a candid interview after leaving Portsmouth which suggested he was suffering from mild depression.
Looking back on the interview, Sullivan said: “I’m so glad I did it as I’ve had players who have played at a much higher level than me call and say they’d gone through a similar thing and asked for advice. “My thing was to show people there’s plenty of other jobs out there. Being a professional footballer is a great career but, trust me, from the outside it looks like you make lots of money and stuff but it’s just not like that. “The money, especially in the lower leagues, isn’t there any more but I know players who have made fantastic businesses and careers after their football careers came to an end. “There’s kind of an image you have to keep up with football. It’s stupid, really, but I just felt that people should know that it’s not glamour all the time. “Going to Cambridge was my last-ditch attempt at staying in football. Turning up to a new house with other players out of the blue isn’t as easy as some people may think. It’s unsettling and puts you out of your comfort zone. “It was a difficult time and I already felt I was looking for a new career. I wasn’t in the right mindset and I wasn’t as hungry as I had been before, so that definitely reflected in my performances. I’m so grateful they got promoted because there’s some great people there.” And there is no chance of seeing Sullivan play professional football again: “I’ve let that career go. I’m still staying in touch with it but it’s just from a distance. “I don’t watch it and think that I wish I was still doing that. Not even an extraordinary amount of money could tempt me back. “I just look back on my time in football and feel that I’m very privileged. Although I didn’t really achieve what I wanted, to the average person I still probably achieved a lot because there’s so many people out there who want to be a footballer. “I look back and I made mistakes here and there and maybe I could have done better. But the reality is I played for some fantastic clubs and I’ve got some great memories. “I met some amazing people, who I still stay in touch with, and I’ve got no regrets whatsoever.”

Harty I think play-off qualification is all but secure
I
actually spared a thought for all the locally-based Leeds United supporters on Monday night after the Super Whites’ first half humiliation against the Albion at the Amex. With Albion 4-0 up at the break, the second period was very much after the Lord Mayor’s Show with no further scoring, but did the Albion take their foot off the gas? I’m not totally convinced, Leeds, despite being managed by the hapless Steve Evans, an individual who appears to unite opinion, effectively parked the bus. With the game effectively over at the break, it was almost a case of running the clock down, my only concern is that at the end of the season it doesn’t come down to goal difference. Without wishing to tempt fate, I think play-off qualification is all but secured, and I firmly believe now, with one potential loanee still to arrive, Albion have the squad,
and perhaps equally as important and significant an experienced manager at this level, to successfully challenge for the top two automatic promotion spots. Whether Glenn Murray is part of that squad still remains to be seen. There was mounting speculation last week he was about to rejoin the Albion, as I understand it discussions have taken place, but very much with my Albion bobble hat on, actions do speak louder than words. In other news, another two kick-off switches to accommodate more live TV, with the mouthwatering top-of-the-table clash at the Amex with Burnley moving to a lunchtime kick-off, while a week later the trip to Forest moves to the Monday. Is it fair on supporters? Not really, I’ve been to Burnley on numerous occasions, and it’s a long way, so for Clarets fans having to come to the Amex effectively three hours earlier throws up a
number of travel issues. But Sky click their fingers, get the cheque book out and the realisation that football sold its soul a long time ago once again comes to the fore. The same can be said for the Albion faithful travelling to Nottingham, I’m sure train tickets and hotels would have already been booked for the Saturday, and I doubt in most cases any refunds will be available. Somewhat ironic then in the week that celebrated the 24th anniversary of the founding of BISA, (Brighton Independent Supporters’ Association). Back in 1992, footballing wise it was a different world. For a start it was even before the Premiership – safe terracing, pay on the gate, everything we almost took for granted. A lot has happened, not just in football in general but at the Albion in particular, but overall I’m proud of what BISA achieved, none more so than ultimately helping to save the

Bangladesh star Rahman signs for Sussex Cricket
Brighton Half Marathon
Sussex County Cricket Club have signed Bangladesh left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman for the NatWest T20 Blast competition. Rahman, 20, will become the first ever Bangladeshi international to play for Sussex. He has burst on to the international scene over the past few seasons, first catching the attention of the Bangladesh selectors as he starred at the Under-19 World Cup in 2014. His full Test bow soon followed in 2015 as he took 4-37 on debut against South Africa. He made his ODI debut against India in Dhaka last summer and became only the tenth bowler in the history of the game to take a five-wicket haul on debut,

A record number of runners took part in the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday. Former Great Britain athlete and Sussex local Sally Gunnell OBE sounded the starting klaxon to get more than 8,000 runners on their way. The former Olympic hurdler cheered on runners as they passed the start line on Brighton’s famous seafront, wishing them well for their 13.1 mile journey around the city. A sea of confetti got the race off to a colourful start, and runners were cheered along the route by hundreds of spectators, bands, choirs and stiltwalkers, plus a community stage provided by The Grand Brighton. Now in its 26th year, the much-loved race is organised by The Sussex Beacon, a Brighton-based charity which provides a range of services for men, women and families living with or affected by HIV across Sussex. The 2016 race field was the largest in the event’s history, with many local, national and international runners. The event had 8,095 finishers and in the men’s elite race, Paul Martelletti stole the show once again, taking his fourth successive
club’s very existence. The hard work of the likes of Mr Baine, Paul Samrah, Paul Whelch and others can never be underestimated or hopefully forgotten when finally the Albion make it to the Premier League (in August?). I’ve still not made it through the whole of a John Baine gig, but apparently there’s still time. Nowadays, while it’s not at this point even necessary, a protest on that scale at the Amex would be nigh on impossible due to security, stewarding etc. For a start, John Baine couldn’t stand on the roof of the dugout, because there isn’t one. Unfortunately, the biggest thing for me, and something I touched on in this column the other week, is that we aren’t supporters any more and Brighton Independent Customers’ Association doesn’t have the same ring to it. And don’t get me started on the old adage of the customer always being right!

It has always been an ambition of mine to play in England and I am thankful to Sussex for this opportunity.” New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor is Sussex’s other confirmed overseas player, although his stint ends in late July. Rahman will remain in Hove until August and is also set to feature in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Second place went to Christopher Zablocki in a time of 1-08-20, while Kevin Rojas of Brighton & Hove Athletics finished in 1-08-36. In the women’s elite race, Leigh Lattimore, a seasoned 5,000m and 10,000m XC runner, showed a storming

Runner-up Sarah Hill was soon to follow in 1-1822, and third place was taken by Fiona De Mauny in 1-22-18. Simon Dowe, CEO of The Sussex Beacon, said: “As the organisers of the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon, The

Hughton welcomes selection headache Football

Albion boss Chris Hughton is welcoming a selection headache as his side enter the crunch period of the season. The Seagulls sit fourth in the Championship and have a fully-fit squad to choose from, apart from defender Uwe Hunemeier, who is still a few weeks away from returning. Left-back Gaetan Bong, who has been out since October with a thigh injury, and winger Kazenga LuaLua both featured in a behindclosed-doors friendly with Cardiff City on Tuesday. Along with midfielder Andrew Crofts, they were not in the 18-man Brighton squad for Monday’s 4-0 win at home to Leeds United. Hughton is welcoming having so many players available and said: “It certainly causes problems but they’re good problems. “We’ll need everyone because we went through a big chunk of the season missing players who started
the season so well. You know that at some stage you will also pick up some more injuries, it’s just part and parcel of the game. “But to have as many fit as what we do at this moment is a big plus for us.” Albion head to Preston tomorrow after back-to-back 4-0 wins, over Bristol City and Leeds respectively. Striker Sam Baldock is expecting a tough game but admits the Seagulls are going into every game looking to win: “It will be very tough as they’re hard to beat. They took the pace out of the game at our place and they controlled parts of the match. “They’re going to be hard to score against and they also carry the attacking threat with the players they have but we go in to each game hoping to win and wanting to win. “You see the standards of people training and think ‘we’re in a good place here’. “You’re always being pushed and no one’s place is secure. We are such a tightknit group and everyone wants everyone to achieve for the club.”

Whitehawk sign former Albion left-back Rents on loan Whitehawk Football Club have signed former Brighton leftback Sam Rents on loan from fellow National League South side Margate. Rents started has career at Brighton & Hove Albion and played 37 times for the Seagulls, before he made 94 appearances for Crawley Town. He has since had spells at Hayes & Yeading United, Gateshead and Sutton United, before joining Margate in 2014. He had a loan spell at Ryman League Premier Division side Tonbridge Angels earlier this season. Rents could make his Hawks
debut when they host Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday. Hawks crashed to a 6-0 defeat at struggling St Albans City at the weekend. Defender Juan Cruz Gotta was sent off with Whitehawk 1-0 down and Charlie MacDonald, who had scored the opener, then got the second from the penalty spot. MacDonald completed his hat-trick by half-time, before the hosts struck three more times in the second half. The defeat leaves Hawks 16th in the table, 12 points off the play-off places and five points above the relegation zone.
The Albion Roar by Alan Wares @albionroar
Football without fans is nothing Rewind to 2011, and we were getting closer to our longawaited move to the Amex. We really felt that in our fantastic new stadium, things would be on the up, glory would be forthcoming and the sky was the limit. Leap forward to 2016, and Sky really are the limit. Although the Albion haven’t been the most prolific Championship side on the box, Sky are playing havoc with Brighton fans’ arrangements. Several people have bought cheap(er) train tickets to go to Nottingham. Now Sky have ruined that by moving the game to the Monday, putting themselves first, the clubs second and the fans nowhere. It now means re-arranged tickets, hotels and days off work. While some train companies offer exchanges, it’s noticeable SASTA – ‘Southern Are Sorry To Announce’ – do not. It’s simply not good enough to shrug your shoulders and say ‘well, you take your chances...’. With train fares at larcenous rates, it’s understandable that people want to take advantage of cheaper prices. It wouldn’t hurt Sky to offer fans train ticket refunds especially as it’s down to them that these tickets are now worthless. Because they change fixtures so often, it’s evident Sky don’t care. To claim they are doing this for the good of the game is a barefaced lie because football without fans is nothing. Loving the 4-0 wins, by the way. n On air at noon every Saturday, and at 9am every Monday on 97.2FM, online at radioreverb.com, or on DAB.

Brighton will look to continue their fine run of form in front of goal when they head to face a Preston side challenging to break into the play-offs. Albion followed up their four-goal win over Bristol City last week by repeating the feat against Leeds on Monday. The eight goals in two games, along with the 3-0 win over Brentford at the start of February, have helped boost the Seagulls goal difference; however they will want to continue to narrow the goal gap on the likes of Burnley, Hull and Middlesbrough.
Lewis Dunk celebrates his goal against Leeds on Monday
They will be hard-pushed to do so against Simon Grayson’s Lilywhites, who were one of the form sides in February. Preston picked up four
wins from six games last month, and sit seven points off the play-off places. They have already proved tough to beat for Albion this season, holding them to a 0-0 draw at the Amex in October. The previous meeting between the two sides was the last appearance Gaetan Bong made in an Albion shirt, with the defender being stretchered off late in the game with a thigh injury. The Cameroonian made his return to action in a behindclosed-doors friendly on Tuesday, and therefore could return to the first-team squad for the trip to Deepdale.

Football will always be played on different levels
E
urope. In or out? Are we missing out? What are the benefits? Can we go it alone? No, not a referendum on June 23rd but the Champions League of Europe. In a few months time, the public will vote on this country’s future but in football some European clubs have already expressed concerns over the imbalance between the Premier League and European leagues. The mystery over the meeting this week of the top (top? bear with me, I’ll come on to that!) five clubs in England remains and the dismantling of the Champions League would surely have an effect on the top flight here. These meetings are taking place amid huge attractions (okay, cash) for players in China and glamour of the US. If the might of the Premier League or UEFA is threatened by a new world order or global game then the footballing map may change forever. However, as it stands it looks like there will be a few unfamiliar faces at the top table next season in Europe. No one who has been to the King Power stadium before their promotion will be as surprised as lofty TV pundits at Leicester City’s relentless drive. Trips to Shakhtar or FC Porto have been on the cards for Spurs for some time. West Ham’s ambition under a new manager seems as big as their new
stadium. To be honest, there is little interest for me in continual group stages across the continent. We should all be wallowing in the unpredictability of this domestic season. The results this week show just that. I love the fact that AFC Bournemouth look like they will stay up. I love the fact that clubs with ‘history’ like Villa can come down, and like many (well maybe Nigel Pearson will disagree) love the fact that the Foxes may scavenge the Premier League for booty. Football will always be played on different levels. The struggles of St Francis Rangers or the demise of Aston Villa, the majesty of Barcelona or the grit of Bognor Regis Town, it all provides an interest to those that follow their teams. The intrigue of the meetings of football’s powerhouses, previous, current and future, may conjure images of a SPECTRE like group planning world domination. Yes, it’s about business. Yes, it’s about money. However, it’s also about you and me. You may think you don’t have a vote but of course it’s up to us how we spend our money, be it through the turnstiles, in the club shop or with our TV subscription. We have power too. Monday’s win up there with the best at the Amex
W
hat a performance on Monday night. The statement of back-to-back 4-0 wins will certainly make the rest of the Championship sit up and take note. In front of the television cameras, from the 15th-minute onwards, Leeds couldn’t live with Albion for the remainder of the first half. From the moment Tomer Hemed coolly dinked home the opener from the penalty spot, it was just a matter of how many the Seagulls would score in the first half. The game was won by half-time and Albion somewhat took their foot off the gas in the second half. There must have been a temptation to push forward for more goals but that could have left gaps at the back and a 4-0 winning margin suddenly becomes 4-1 or 4-2. The four goals helped boost Albion’s goal diference to plus-15, the same as Derby and Sheffield Wednesday, who are also in the play-off places. Where did the performance rank in terms of Albion’s best-ever displays at the Amex? For the 20 minutes when the Albion scored all four goals, it was right up there. Better than the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in March, 2013? Probably not, that day was pretty special. There was also a 6-1 win over Blackpool in April, 2013, and Brighton had enjoyed a 5-1 success at home to Barnsley earlier in that campaign. A 3-0 win against then leaders Southampton in January, 2012, is also one that sticks out, bearing in mind Albion had lost five successive games without scoring heading into the match. Then, there’s also the two FA Cup wins over Newcastle and the League Cup victory over Sunderland. Another memorable performance was at home to Burnley in December, 2011, when the Seagulls had both Romain Vincelot and Ashley Barnes sent off in the opening 12 minutes. They went on to lose 1-0 but so nearly

got a point when Craig Mackail-Smith had a late shot cleared off the line. Monday’s match with Leeds was the first time Liam Bridcutt – player-of-theyear in the first two seasons at the Amex – had come up against the Seagulls since leaving. His move to Sunderland hasn’t worked out and he is now on loan at Leeds, although he was quoted this week saying he would not rule out a return to Brighton. He was a great player for the Seagulls but it just goes to show how much Chris Hughton’s side have improved this season that, now, I couldn’t see him even getting in the Albion squad. Beram Kayal and Dale Stephens would certainly start ahead of him and there wouldn’t be much point in having a defensive midfielder like him on the bench when you can call upon Steve Sidwell.
