ALBION SHARES SHOCK EXCLUSIVE by Greg Hadfield Dick Knight’s act of generosity in offering shares to Brighton and Hove Albion supporters was thrown into confusion last night. Mr Knight, the man credited with saving the club, wants to sell his shares to fans for £1 each. But in an exclusive interview with Brighton & Hove Independent, CEO Paul Barber said the club learned of the plan only when Mr Knight’s book was published on Wednesday. Mr Barber said: “However, under the club’s articles of association, shareholders must notify the club of any intention to sell their shares and then allow the club 28 days in which to respond.” Questions about the possibilty of the offer going ahead were thrown further into doubt by Chris Boakes, of Acumen Business Law. Mr Boakes said: “Private companies are prohibited from offering shares to the public to protect against fraud. “Although it is not a criminal offence to make an offer, the courts may take a dim view on this and potentially the Financial Conduct

Authority may investigate, if a member of the public complains or suffers a loss. From what we understand of the ‘share offer’ it is not an investment opportunity. “Shares cannot be transferred just to anyone; the Model Articles hold that the directors of a company have an absolute discretion to refuse to place a new name on the company register and any shares proposed to be sold must first be offered to the current shareholders. “In most companies of the size of Brighton and Hove Albion, a contract will exist between the various shareholders that provides a mechanism and rules as to how and to whom any shares are transferred. Without sight of that document we are in the dark.” Last night Mr Knight denied his offer was a thinly-veiled PR exercise and money-maker: “I’m not making a penny profit out of it. My objective is purely to ensure that we maintain the tradition that directors listen to the fans, that the fans have a voice in the club.”

The story of our survival in stormiest of circumstances

Dick Knight found something to smile about – even throughout Albion’s darkest years (Photographs: Andrew Hasson - www.andrewhasson.co

Dick Knight, writing exclusively for Brighton & Hove Independent When I became chairman of Brighton & Hove Albion back in 1997, I thought to myself: “One day I should write this down”. For the next few years, of course, I was rather too busy. But now my story, Mad Man From the Gutter to the Stars is available at a good bookshop near you. The first part of the title refers to the TV series about the advertising industry, but also to what some people called me when they heard I wanted to become chairman of a club with no ground and in danger of going out of the Football League - because that was Albion in 1997. The whole purpose in writing the book was to make sure that my perspective on the story of how the fans saved the Albion was properly recorded. I felt it was something I needed to do because what we had been through was pretty unprecedented. There have been umpteen books by managers and thousands by players, but very few club chairmen have written their memoirs. But although I had to do the usual hiring and firing of managers, my story is anything but typical. If you’re looking for a “How to be a club chairman” manual, this isn’t it. My book is a story of survival in the stormiest of circumstances, a battle against

people who sold our ground, and then a fight against the red tape of the planning process as we tried to build a new one. And, all the time, there was also a football club to run. If anyone had been able to list in advance all the problems we would face, I would have said: “Half of those can’t be possible”. The other thing that makes my chairmanship different is the close relationship between the club and the fans, who were our comrades in the battle for the club’s future. They were so important in the story of my time as chairman that I wanted them to be first to get the flavour of the book. That’s why I gave an extract to the fanzine, The Seagull Love Review - the section about the firing of controversial chief executive David Bellotti immediately after I completed my takeover. I knew they’d enjoy it! But that takeover was just the beginning. Our reputation had sunk so low that 17 clubs voted to throw us out of the league. It was an incredible 14-year struggle from the last game at the Goldstone to the opening of the Amex Stadium that became part of the folklore of football. And, by the end, all the other 91 clubs were supporting us. That is a story in itself. Our fans were brilliant in the way they rose up. Not all supporters can be expected to man the barricades, but we had a unique group who were prepared to do it, and did it on

behalf of others. I knew those thousands who now go to the Amex were out there, because I had stood in huge crowds at the Goldstone ground and I was sure they would come back if we could somehow resuscitate the club and build a new stadium. And I always believed that we could. I say in the book that I was fighting blind stupidity with blind faith. And in the end the faith won out. Many readers will remember some of the events in the book. The games against Doncaster and Hereford, for instance. Our three promotions and two relegations. And the time we served champagne to the entire home crowd at Withdean Stadium. But there will be plenty that is new to everyone - for example, why a manager fell asleep while I was interviewing him; how we missed out on a future Premier League and international star; and the loan player who booked himself into an unusual hotel in Kemptown, not knowing Brighton’s reputation as a gay capital. Then there’s Bill Shankly’s pyjamas... Brighton fan and TV legend Des Lynam, who helped us out so often, has written the foreword. He says that, although I am no longer “the driving force” behind the Albion, I am “its conscience”. And that is why I have used the publication of Mad Man to give the fans the chance to own some of my shares in the club.

Making our roads safer has benefits for our safety, our health and for our economy Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat

Accidents on Brighton and Hove’s roads have been falling over the last few years and by a substantial 12.5% in the last three, according to a major survey by the Department for Transport. There are now one in eight fewer accidents than in 2010, and a much higher drop in accidents than seen nationally or across the region. Over the same period of time, accidents across the whole southeast fell by just 1% - and, in England as a whole, by only 5%. And this is despite the fact that Brighton and Hove’s population is rising rapidly, with more people than ever before using the city’s streets.

We are introducing policies that make the city’s roads better and safer, such as making changes to dangerous layouts and roads, slowing traffic speeds, and encouraging the use of public transport, cycling and walking. Brighton and Hove wasn’t built for cars, and unless we make it easier, more reliable and cheaper to travel in other ways, our

World-class ambition to revive Royal Estate with £35m masterplan Jenni Davidson @jenni_davidson

More details have been announced about a proposed £35 million masterplan for Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Estate. The ambitious project – Heritage Centre Stage: Reawakening Brighton’s Royal Estate - will include both vital repairs and restoration work and improvements to the buildings and gardens. The Royal Pavilion Estate – an important driver of the local economy - includes the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Brighton Dome Concert Hall, the Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, and the Pavilion Gardens. The intention is to conserve the Grade I and II listed buildings and the historic landscape around them while reconnecting all the whole area back into a single, coherent and connected estate. The plans possibly include a new building opposite the Theatre Royal in New Road,

“Although this is an ambitious and aspirational plan, it’s a really necessary one.” He said that, if the work was not carried out, parts of the site would have to close within 10 years. One of the most pressing problems is repair work that needs to be done to the roofs of the buildings that had not been worked on since the mid-1900s. Among issues raised by visitors are a lack of security and the level of anti-social behaviour in the gardens, which mean people are afraid to go there at night. The lack of modern visitor facilities at the Royal Pavilion is a serious concern, too, with the small ticketing area causing queues outside during the summer, a lack of space to park buggies, poor educational facilities for schools, and staff having to work in cramped and poorly heated conditions. Other issues to address are the confusing variety of different entrances to the estate and the amount of shrubbery obscuring the original view of the buildings. New walls and fencing might be

similar to John Nash’s original ideas for a conservatory. Janita Bagshawe, director of the Royal Pavilion and head of museums and arts, said: “What we do now is good. Our ambition is to make it world-class. We really need to pull up the game.” Andrew Comben, director of Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival, underlined the importance of this project:

put up around the estate so that it could be shut at night to prevent anti-social behaviour. Arts Council England has committed £5.8 million to the work already, but a great deal more money will need to be raised. A bid will go in to the Heritage Lottery Fund by November 29 for development money and the result of that application is expected by May 2014.

The Lanes can be more friendly to pedestrians – if we work together Stuart Lauchlan @WhoStu

Pedestrianisation of The Lanes has been something that, I imagine, almost everyone living in the Old Town has thought about at some point - especially given the success of shared spaces elsewhere in the city. When a public consultation was launched into options last summer, as residents of the Old Town, we took an obvious interest in the two traffic management proposals that were put forward. Problems arose, however, when before last Christmas, Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) were published that included major elements that had never been the subject of public consultation, such as the daily closure of all of East Street between 11am and 7pm. As the south end of East Street - immediately outside Clarendon Mansions - had been a closedoff, shared space for more than a year, this was not going to impact particularly on our lives - although there was some unease this TRO had been introduced in response to a request from a few local businesses rather than the results of the public consultation that favoured allowing traffic into The Lanes. What did concern us was a second TRO that would close off Brills Lane - the only vehicle access route to our building - effectively preventing deliveries, elderly residents offloading at the front door, and school run drop-offs of young children. Why the middle section of East Street could not be closed off, without also closing Brills Lane,

was unclear to us. We would have presented no objection to such a situation. But because we were told by the council this was inextricably linked to the East Street TRO suspending traffic during the day, we were obliged to object to both. As so many had objected - more businesses in the Old Town objected to aspects of the plans than were in favour based on submissions lodged after the TROs were published - a threeday public inquiry was held at which an independent government inspector heard the cases from those in favour and against and make recommendations on how to proceed. So we found ourselves as part of the “coalition of the unwilling” at the inquiry, sat alongside representatives from the city’s taxi firms, the Brighton Lanes Traders’ Association and the Quakers Society. On the “opposing bench” were the council’s representative and its legal team, including a London barrister to make its case. Each side would make their argument, which was then subject to cross-examination by all interested parties. Sadly the few third-party supporters of the council case present at the inquiry were unwilling to agree to questioning, but the council’s own representative subjected himself to what was a long, gruelling day in the spotlight - while all those with objections were questioned at some length by both the council’s barrister and the inspector himself over the remainder of the inquiry. The inspector’s findings were published last week in a 59-page report that we were delighted to see

Residents in Clarendon Mansions have avoided being stranded

supported our case as a residents’ association in respect of Brills Lane not being closed. We were equally pleased to receive a formal commitment from the council, immediately upon publication, that that it will not now proceed with that particular TRO. This does leave the question of what happens in the wake of this inquiry? Out of seven TROs in total, the inspector recommended not proceeding with three of them, including the East Street closure in its present form. The council’s position, as I understand it, is that it intends to proceed with the scheme in some form - although there is clearly some work to be done here to meet the inspector’s concerns. Despite gross misrepresentation of our position by some over the past months, we have in fact never objected to the basic idea of pedestrianisation in sections of the Old Town and have made this clear in every single representation with the council throughout. We very much hope that a solution can be found that meets with wide approval and can genuinely benefit the city, its residents and its visitors. Making the Old Town more pedestrian-centric is a noble ambition, but needs the support and representation of all interested parties.

Determined young women should not have to leave the country to succeed Jean Calder @JeanCalder101

It’s a standing joke in our house that if I’m not around late in the afternoon, I’ll be in a coffee shop. I like reading the newspapers in a public place, with the sound and sight of people around me. It’s too easy to get isolated working from home. A few months ago, I was sitting in the London Road Costa, when the peace was broken by a belligerent, apparently-drunken, young man who barged through the door and strode aggressively through the premises towards the toilets. Finding them locked, he loudly demanded access from the only staff member in evidence - a young woman, considerably shorter than him. His manner was intimidating and I expected her to give him the key. He looked angry enough to climb behind the counter to get it. She was, however, made of sterner stuff and told him firmly he couldn’t have it. He bellowed obscenities, working himself up for whatever he planned to do. Selfpreservation dictated she should stay behind the counter. But she didn’t. In the time it took me to think “Crikey, she’s brave”, she had come round the front of the counter and was telling him to leave. She faced him, well within punching distance, while he hurled grossly sexist abuse, finally yelling “you ****, you can kneel down and **** my ****”. She didn’t turn a hair, just told him again, forcefully, that he had to

leave. You could see him calculating whether he could get away with spitting at - or hitting - her. In the event, he stormed out, punching the plate-glass in frustration. Once he had gone, the young woman calmly went back to her work, wiping tables and serving coffees. When I asked how she was, Maria - for that was her name - made light of the matter - though she did say she thought the man may have been part of a group who had hassled the staff there a few days before. I’ve thought of this incident often over the past couple of months - partly because it highlighted the sexist abuse and harassment still endured by young women at work and in public places. But, more particularly, because it came at a time, around mid-summer, when politicians suddenly stopped weeping crocodile tears about young people’s lack of employment opportunities - and started to blame them for it. I’ve grown sick of hearing politicians, journalists and

She said” “I was lucky. I went to Horseracing School in Newmarket to learn to be a jockey. It was hard work, but it taught me discipline. That helps me, now that I’m so busy”. She is busy. She may work fulltime as a barrista, but in her spare time she is “Maria Lala”, a professional singer. I felt heartened, but troubled, listening to Maria. She and her friends deserve better than a society that values profit above the common good, that fails to train its youth then blames them for ignorance, that forces young women into low-paid service and care work - then, all too often,

casts them aside because it can fill unskilled jobs cheaper with foreign nationals who’ll work for a pittance and don’t know their rights. Maria likes working for Costa, but won’t be there forever. When I asked her about her future, she grinned broadly and said: “I’ll be off to LA in a couple of years. I’ve just recorded my first album. It’s on iTunes. You can buy it for £3.95 or 79p a song.” I’m happy for Maria. With her ability, drive and determination, I’m sure she’ll succeed. Oh my! The very Englishness of this book is astounding. How we all wear our sorrows with a shrug and a denial. This could never, for instance, be set in Italy. Or Latvia. Three married couples: each living in England’s Lane, each with an only child, and each attending to family, and their livelihoods - the ironmonger, the sweetshop and the butcher. The Butcher, The Confectioner and The Ironmonger. It sounds like a Peter Greenaway film. Indeed, the plot, which starts off gently, lures you into believing that we are studying a slice of suburban life. Then we are led down a path of quite extraordinary events. There is murder, adultery, madness, cruelty, and love. I remember a lot of those small shops from my childhood (sadly, mostly all gone now to be replaced with yet another Tesco Metro) and sometimes I would see the shop-owners not in their usual place behind their counters, but out and about, doing something normal – like walking a dog in the park, or hailing a cab. An Independent View

Reawakening the spirit of Brighton “We travel the world to see its wonders. Often, though, we are blind to - or, worse, careless about - the wonders on our own doorstep. It was a privilege for the Brighton & Hove Independent to be invited on a private tour of Brighton’s Royal Estate: the Royal Pavilion, the Dome, the Corn Exchange...and much, much more. You can read on page 5 about the remarkable plans, proposals, ideas, and - possibly - dreams this unique collection of buildings is inspiring. Truly, if only a fraction of them come to pass, our city should be proud of what deserves to be a unique and world-class destination, for visitors and residents alike. Now is not the time to ask how we have let such an important part of our heritage fall into such neglect. Now is the time to praise the powers-that-be for their approach to the task in hand. David Cameron has insisted we - as a nation - should have

“fixed the roof” when the sun was shining; we should have invested in the fabric of the economy when it was prospering economy. Indeed, some may be concerned about spending £35 million on the Royal Estate in a period of austerity - for the less welloff, at least. In fact, the need to “repair the roof” is never more urgent than when it is raining. Quite literally, the roofs of the Royal Estate require urgent repair. And, as we know, it is definitely raining. If you - or anyone else - needs persuading about the merits of the case for refurbishment, you have to listen only to David Beevers, Keeper of the Royal Pavilion, and one of our tour guides. His passionate fluency will win you over immediately. In the heart of our city, we have what could be one of the wonders of the world - an asset and resource to be nurtured and cherished. And, most of all, to be visited.

The debt we owe Dick Knight Unusually, we would like to pass a few words of comment about Dick Knight. Anyone who has lived in our city for any length of time will know it would not be the same without him. He saved not only a great football club; he inspired a generation of

fans, of young footballers, of community volunteers; he kept alive a flame, a spirit of the city, that will never now be extinguished. He may be a “Mad Man”. But he is also a marvellous man. We should all be grateful.

Small businesses are fundamental to our city and deserve our support Warren Morgan @warrenmorgan

Small Business Saturday is a grassroots campaign that encourages people to “shop local” and support small businesses in their communities. It’s an initiative started in 2010 in the United States, where last year it achieved $5.5 billion (£3.5 billion pounds) in sales to small businesses, and led to an increase in long-term custom. Bringing the idea to the United Kingdom was proposed by Chuka Umunna, Labour’s shadow business secretary . The US campaign was led by American Express, one of this city’s major employers, and they are backing the UK campaign as well, with their “ShopSmall” campaign: www.amexshopsmall.co.uk Our nation’s small businesses provide almost two-thirds of private-sector employment and almost half of private-sector turnover. One in seven shops nationally, however, has fallen empty since the start of the global recession. In the face of ever-larger competition from online shopping, and from international high-street chains, the smaller independent sector needs our support. The independent traders in our shopping streets, particularly the Lanes and North Laine, are a unique and important part of what makes this city special to so many visitors and residents alike. Brighton and Hove relies on the sector more than most cities, having more small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs)

and fewer large employers than most. indeed, 85% of the city’s workforce are employed by SMEs.Labour nationally recognises the crucial role small businesses play in our economy, that’s why Ed Miliband has pledged a future Labour government would freeze business rates for small firms right across England. Small Business Saturday shouldn’t just be focused on supporting shops in the city centre; it also needs to shine a light on all those local shopping parades right across the city, including those in Whitehawk in my own ward, which serve local residents so well. The initiative has the backing of the Federation of Small Businesses, Forum for Private Business, the Association of Convenience Stores, the British Chamber of Commerce, Ingenious Britain, the small business champions, Startup Britain, who support entrepreneurs and the Association of Town and City Management, representing hundreds of thousands of local businesses. Major cities

like London, Birmingham and Manchester are already signed up, as are companies like O2. Many councils including Nottingham, Lancaster, Carlisle, Dover, Ashfield, Middlesbrough, Warwickshire, South Staffordshire and others have been active in drumming up support for the event for weeks if not months. It is unfortunate that despite passing our Labour Group motion backing Small Business Saturday last month, the city council has yet to put anything on its website or issue any press releases regarding the event and what it is doing to promote small businesses and traders on the day. This is our opportunity to champion, celebrate and showcase small, independent businesses on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. I hope we will all getbehind our small shops and independent traders on Saturday December 7.

It will take more than “No parking” signs to save our grass Not unusually, I am angry and confused. I accept it might have something to do with my age. And I realise I should try harder to be a more level-headed citizen. After years of quiet fuming, I was delighted to see the city council was going to pilot a scheme

Varndean Road is exempt from the pilot to prevent thoughtless drivers ruining grass verges near my home in Surrenden Road. Although to be honest, I was more concerned about nearby Varndean Road - where the ruination of our once-leafy suburbs is the most severe. Unfortunately, our councillors decided to exempt this particular road from the pilot, for some reason. Needless to say, this was immediately interpreted by

a small minority of residents (and many commuters) to be the green light to start parking – still unlawfully - on even more of the verges. Nevertheless, I should have been glad when I saw the new “No parking on grass verges” signs being erected every 20 yards or so along Surrenden Road and Braybon Avenue (close to the obsolete and ineffectual signs from last century) - even along stretches of road that have not suffered from this blight. Oh well, more street clutter is a small price to pay to save our verges. Or so I thought. Until Wednesday evening, when an event at Varndean College attracted thoughtless drivers from across the city - eager to park on every grass verge they could find. Often, right underneath the new signs. The final straw? A visiting cyclist choosing to chain his bicycle on the grass verge, using the new sign to secure it. I give up!With a new residents’ parking zone planned for roads near Preston Park, I guess we’ll just have to get used to it. A resident, Surrenden Road (Full name and address witheld)

It’s not all doom and gloom In contrast to the usual doom and gloom generally being publicised, it has been a refreshing change to see people talking positively about the numerous businesses across the city that have signed up to the Brighton Living Wage. I have thought for some time that the statutory minimum wage can be exploitative, especially with the large number of people working in the hospitality industry in our city. It is logical that an increase in salaries will mean more money is spent in the local economy and will therefore directly benefit businesses. My question: does this rule apply to some of the digital companies based in Brighton who have staff commute from outside the city

every day though? Some argue that some of the smaller independent businesses, especially in The Lanes and North Laine, may not be able to afford to pay the Living Wage. However, for an measurable increase in productivity, isn’t it worth an extra £1 an hour? I hope the morale of non-livingwage staff isn’t affected by the current publicity - although, on the flip-side, if it encourages more businesses to sign up then it can only be a good thing in my view. Long may the positivity continue! Andy Marks Hove

Innovative proposal finally points the way to a brighter future Mike Holland @ RealMikeHolland

Well, well! It looks as if we may have viable scheme for the West Pier site at long last, in the form of Innovative Leisure’s proposal. As I understand it, the company is proposing to apply for permission to build a tower similar to the one it has successfully constructed in Weymouth. The tower is 165-feet high and is run by entertainment giant, Merlin. Which is what is proposed in Brighton. The annual meeting of the West Pier Trust was taking place last night, as this newspaper went to print. Meanwhile, however, Rachel Clark, chief executive of the (extremely-blinkered) West Pier Trust, emerged from her bunker long enough to respond to this offer. Her response really hasn’t changed much from the one she made almost two years ago, when

I offered to rebuild the West Pier and sounded just as lame: “I have not heard of Innovative Leisure. I cannot talk to other firms about an observation tower because we have an agreement with Marks Barfield. They will give their plans at the AGM.”

What I think should be done is that West Pier Trust cut their ties with David Marks immediately and a workable deal struck with Innovative Leisure. The deal with this tried-andtested company should be: Yes, we agree. Paul Barber: Albion has a very special relationship with its supporters At the end of a week when Brighton and Hove Albion hit the headlines, because of Dick Knight’s best-selling autobiography, RICHARD MORRIS secured an exclusive interview with Paul Barber, the club’s award-winning chief executive. Dick Knight has made headlines with his share offer to supporters. What does the club make of this? The club only learned of Dick’s wish to sell his remaining shares from his Argus newspaper interview on Wednesday morning. However, under the club’s articles of association, shareholders must notify the club of any intention to sell their shares and then allow the club 28 days in which to respond. To date, we’ve not heard anything formally from Dick, so it’s obviously difficult for us to comment any further on any practicalities until we do. You have been quick to interact with supporters since you arrived at the Amex. How important do you think it is that supporters have a voice and what is the club doing to make sure that happens? A football club’s interaction and communication with its supporters is vitally important. And, at the Albion, supporters enjoy a great deal of dialogue through a variety of channels,

‘‘

Paul Barber was named CEO of the Year at the Football Industry Awards 2013

we all communicate but, more importantly, as we get out and about to meet more supporters face to face. We are also fortunate in that our board contains many born-andbred Albion fans, including, of course, Tony himself. This is increasingly unusual in football these days. You were recently named the best chief executive in the English professional leagues and the Scottish top flight. That must have been quite an honour. It’s always a great honour to be personally recognised by your peers. However, when it comes to an award for running a football club, the real credit has to be given to more than 150 full-time staff and over 1,000 match-day staff that make our football club work as well as it does. Our staff have been absolutely magnificent in my 18 months here and I’m thrilled that their great efforts have been recognised by our industry.

It’s absolutely right and proper that we recognise and respect our past, never forgetting the incredible work carried out by supporters and key individuals” including the mainstream media, fans’ forums, supporter group meetings, letters, e-mails, phone calls, personal meetings and, of course, the increasingly popular and various social media outlets. This dialogue will certainly continue and I hope it will grow as technology changes the way and speed in which

What would you say have been your biggest achievement to date? The most important thing we’ve done in the past 18 months is to ensure we could

maintain (and slightly improve) a competitive football budget, while continuing to provide our supporters with a great matchday experience at the Amex. To achieve this, we have grown revenues, reduced costs, and continued to grow our supporter base in a very difficult economic climate. However, this remains an important on-going process. Last summer must have been tough for you. How difficult was it - and was there never a point when both the club and Gus Poyet could have sat down and worked things out? Last summer was very difficult for everyone connected to the Albion, not least our supporters, who were incredibly patient and supportive throughout, and our staff, who were incredibly discreet and professional. At all times, the chairman, myself, and the board acted in the best interests of the football club. The club did make attempts to resolve matters earlier - sadly, to no avail. It’s now time to move on. In hindsight, could the club have managed the situation better in terms of public perception? Of course, we would rather not have attracted any negative publicity. But the club followed its own internal HR (human resources) procedures and, just

Albion aims at providing supporters with a great match-day experience

as importantly, we followed UK employment law to the letter. It was a highly-confidential process - and rightly so. Unfortunately, one or two people publicly expressed views, often from an uninformed or ill-informed position, which exacerbated an already-difficult situation. For the good of the club, and to protect the interests of everyone involved, we tried to deal with any such comments with as much dignity and professionalism as possible. Often this meant simply keeping our own counsel. Dick Knight is obviously an important figure in Brighton’s history - and one who is cherished by supporters. What would you say to reassure fans who perhaps share his concerns about the direction the club is heading? Football has changed massively in the past 20 years. The Albion has changed enormously during this period too, experiencing great lows and incredible highs – with, we hope, many more highs to come. Dick played an important part in the club’s history. Now it’s important for the club to continue to evolve and grow under Tony’s ownership. It’s absolutely right and proper that we recognise and fully respect our past, never forgetting the incredible work that was carried out by supporters and key individuals, including Dick, to save the club and position us for the future. But, equally, we must never allow our past to be a barrier to a more sustainable future for the club.

Football is an expensive hobby and the Albion have among the highest ticket prices in the Championship - indeed, cheaper adult season tickets are available at a host of Premier League clubs. What promises can the Albion give supporters that they will not be priced out in the pursuit of top-flight football? We have one of Europe’s best stadiums. We provide fantastic

‘‘

to all of our staff. We will also be doing everything we can to support Martin (Perry) to open our new training ground on time – and on budget! (I know he will!) and, of course, to help Oscar, his staff, and our players win football matches. All of these efforts combined are of course designed to support the club’s aim of playing at the highest level while running a sustainable longterm business.

We’ve not heard anything formally from Dick, so it’s obviously difficult for us to comment at this time” facilities for our supporters. And we try to make it as easy and as cost-effective for supporters to see their team play with a combination of subsidised travel and one of the best seasonticket purchase schemes I’ve ever seen in football. We are also trying to ensure we have a competitive playing budget to achieve our aims. So, as ever, a careful balance is required but we will always strive to provide supporters with the best possible value. What are the main challenges over the next 12 months? Building revenues. Reducing costs. Growing the supporter base. Enhancing our brand (I know another dirty word!) and reputation. Ensuring we deliver a great match-day and non-match-day experience at the Amex. These five key objectives form the basis of our short-, medium- and longerterm strategy - and are known

Do you have any other message for the supporters? Our efforts to maintain a healthy and constructive dialogue with our fans, old and new, will continue to be a very high priority and represent a vital part of my job. Similarly, our very special connection with the various local communities in which our fans live and work will be an even greater priority for us going forward. Most importantly, growing and changing as a club doesn’t mean we lose our roots, ignore our history, forget the great work that’s gone before, become too corporate, or stop understanding the important part we play in people’s daily lives. But it does mean we have to be organised, prepared, and ready to compete in a very different era for football, on and off the field. The right to a future is what our supporters fought so very hard to deliver for this club. We now have a fantastic opportunity to make that future a very bright one.

More teenagers than ever are engaged in the political process in our city Ceirney Eddie @Ceirney95 I’m the MYP - Member of Youth Parliament - for Brighton and Hove. I am in the House of Commons today (Friday) with more than 250 other MYPs. We will debate five key issues that more than 450,000 young people have voted for. You may not realise this, but more than 2,500 young people voted in the recent Youth Parliament elections in Brighton and Hove, which gives us the greatest political mandate in the history of youth democracy. This year’s figure is more than 20 times the number of people aged 11 to 18 who voted last year. I believe this shows more teenagers are engaged in the political process in our area than ever before. This huge national consultation shows that during an era of young

people’s supposed dissatisfaction with the United Kingdom’s political system, a non-party political organisation can receive overwhelming interest on issues such as euthanasia, votes for 16- and 17-year-olds, and youth unemployment. Today, we will vote for what we think is the most important issue out of the five being debated. The most popular issue will form the basis of next year’s UKYP campaign. This annual House of Commons event marks the start of Parliament Week, a national programme of events that aim to inspire, engage and connect people with parliamentary democracy. Parliament Week is delivered by the House of Commons with the support of the House of Lords. Members of both chambers take an active part in the most politically-engaging week for young people in the parliamentary calendar.

With only 44% of people aged 18 to 24 voting in the 2010 general election - the lowest voter turnout of any age group - United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) remains a key player in representing the voices of young people who want to have a say at the highest level of government. Youth Parliament is an advocate of “Votes at 16”, with backing from John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons, as well as from MPs of all parties. It is a real honour and a rare opportunity to speak, as a young person, in the Commons, on national television, and to political decision-makers. This year’s campaign has assessed whether schools and colleges are providing a “Curriculum for Life” to all young people. If this isn’t the case in certain institutions, UKYP will consult with government ministers to address these problems. Two

Ceirney Eddie is your MYP in the Commons today

members of UKYP also took part in a Youth Select Committee in July, hearing evidence from MPs, schools’ representatives, and young people about curriculums. I was lucky enough to witness the first Youth Select Committee in Westminster last year. These evidence-gathering sessions are extremely helpful in structuring the national campaign and helping promote our messages

across Westminster. I firmly believe that UKYP is the single most influential UK youth organisation in decades.

Brighton and Hove - Past and Present

Taken shortly after Black Rock Bathing Pool, an Art Deco lido, opened in 1936, this old photograph shows the pleasure this site - close to the modern-day Brighton Marina - can provide for the people of Brighton and Hove. Students aged 14 to 19 across the city are being offered the prospect of places at a new university technical college (UTC). A formal consultation lasts until December 24. The UTC, proposed in Newhaven, would specialise in marine engineering and environmental technology.

A Brighton demonstrator charged with threatening Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove, after calling him a coward - has been cleared. Alex Cline, 25, was accused of shouting abuse when the MP visited the University of Sussex campus in November last year.

Mark Strong, a cycling expert, has suggested that foreign students should be educated in English bike etiquette. A week-long Sussex Police campaign resulted in 50 cyclists - mostly students - being stopped in the city for riding on the road without lights.

A proposal to encourage offlicences to stop selling highstrength beer, lager or cider through a voluntary “Sensible on Strength” scheme will be put before the city’ councils licensing committee on Thursday

Meet the Montefiore Hospital’s consultants

head and neck - and worked in this area for a number of years. I then decided to specialise in orthopaedics and, specifically, spinal surgery.

Mr Shuaib Karmani What is your role at the Montefiore Hospital? I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, which means I diagnosis and treat conditions or trauma that have affected bones, joints, muscles and nerves.

You’re based in Brighton but where else have you worked? Most of my training took place in London but I spent some time in Australia and New Zealand doing specialist training. I have also done relief work in the war zones of Bosnia and Afghanistan and have spent time out in Kenya treating children with facial deformities.

Do you specialise in a particular part of the body? Yes, my speciality is the neck and spine. I treat people with back pain caused by a variety of different things including arthritis, slipped discs, traumatic injuries and tumours.

What do you like to do when you are not at work? My family and four children keep me busy, but when I have a bit of holiday I love to go scuba diving. I also have a pilot’s licence and dream of getting back in the air when I can find the time!

What led you to become a surgeon? I started my career as a dentist but I soon realised that my heart lay in medicine, so I trained to be a maxillofacial surgeon –

For further information about Mr Karmani or to arrange an appointment with him, please contact the Montefiore Hospital on 01273 828120 or visit themontefiorehospital.co.uk

A new care home in Brighton is throwing open its doors on 23rd and 24th November, giving local residents a first peek at the state-of-the-art home. Maycroft Manor Care Home on Carden Avenue will be welcoming its first residents in December, offering residential, nursing and dementia care. The 99-bed home is the first in the area from Hallmark Care Homes, an award-winning care provider with homes across England and Wales. Outstanding Facilities The home includes two cafés, where residents can relax with a cup of coffee or enjoy time with their friends and relatives. There is also a corner shop enabling residents to continue a daily routine of picking up everyday essentials. Residents will be able to do their own laundry, if they wish, in one of the home’s laundry rooms or treat themselves to a new hair cut in the hair salon and a manicure in the spa therapy room. The library and cinema offer

the chance to get lost in a whole new story while the roof top terrace gives the opportunity to get a bit of fresh air and enjoy views of the surrounding landscaped gardens. Relationship-Centred care Maycroft Manor provides nursing, residential and dementia care, so if the needs of a loved one change, they won’t have to move home. The home’s relationship-cantered care approach means placing the individuals’ needs at the very centre of the care provided. This means building a relationship with every resident, listening to their stories and learning about their lives. Dementia Community The home has a separate dementia community with its own range of facilities, including a residents’ laundry room, corner shop and café. Residents living with a form of dementia are enabled to continue to live an active and independent life.

New opportunities Home Manager Lesley Standing said: “I feel in a very privileged position to be given this opportunity to deliver a new model of care for this care home in Brighton. I look forward to welcoming many people over the weekend and I’m excited to show everyone just what we have to offer at Maycroft Manor.” There’s such excitement about Maycroft Manor – and this is your chance to see why. Get in touch today to make an appointment or for more information on our Community Open Weekend, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th September,

The only slight disappointment is that the script doesn’t attempt anything existential or profound, (think the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey), though it does throw in a number of wry jokes (such as a cameo by a floating Marvin the Martian figurine) and pleasing allusions to other films.

The places I eat

The Troll’s Pantry

Troll’s Stinky Breath is one of the best burgers around Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn

Burgers are everywhere in Brighton at the moment and their popularity increases to grow with many pubs and restaurants adding beef patties to their menu. One of the best in show is The Troll’s Pantry, founded in 2012 by Paul Clark, head chef and owner. “Originally it was going to be sausages and I wanted to make them to order. I had this crazy idea that I wanted people to see the sausages being made. “Luckily, my girlfriend at the time pointed out that people would probably be put off seeing meat going into a sausage machine,” chuckled Paul. And what luck that Paul opted to produce some of the finest burgers this city has seen in recent years. A product of the recession, The Troll’s Pantry concept was a year in the making before tentative launches across the city, including a stint at The Bugle Inn pub and

a pitch at Conway Street in Hove. Paul then made the move to a site at The Wood Recycling Store behind Grand Parade, where word of mouth and queues around the block - plus sellouts at weekends - set the bar high for Paul and his team. Before long, demand outweighed the site The Troll’s Stinky Breath is one of the best burgers around and Paul moved to The Hobgoblin Pub in York Place “I see my burgers as a platform to and, soon after, expanded to a promote local, seasonal produce.” second site at The Brunswick Pub Kind and ethical words from a in Holland Road, Hove. sauce, smoked cheese, caramelised onions, chipotle mayo and lettuce; The Shaman - beetroot ketchup, beetroot and celeriac slaw, Sussex goat’s cheese, honey bacon jam and garlic mayo; or, my personal favourite, The Troll’s Stinky Breath - anchovy, Brighton blue cheese, Sussex beer and garlic sauce with St Giles cheese, salad, onion, garlic mayo and gherkins. Each burger is prepared from scratch and served in a hand-kneaded and steamed brioche bun. Delicious. “I try and think of what flavours work well with beef, not necessarily

what you would normally see in a burger,” Paul says, when asked of how he creates such extravagant flavour combinations. “I think what is important is that different flavours all gel together... I don’t taste the burgers before I put them out, I gel flavours together and taste them in my head.”Paul is comfortable receiving feedback and is constantly looking to tweak andimprove his creations. With no plans to expand further just yet, we can only look forward to his menu evolving with the seasons and Paul introducing other meals from his talented mind. Whichever burger you order from The Troll’s Pantry this winter, you will never forget. Served wrapped in greaseproof paper, with a side order of paper towels, the burgers are beastly, dirty, messy and divine. Whether you order The Hunter, The Shaman, The Troll’s Stinky Breath, The Imperial, The Nightfire, or the new vegetarian option, Gaea’s Bounty, be prepared for an indulgent five minutes as you devour the best burger in Brighton and Hove.

Food is too important to let it go to waste Claire Beveridge

The government’s waste advisory body has published its latest findings about food waste. But what really are the facts? The report by the Waste and Resources Action Program (Wrap) provides an estimation of the quantities of food and drink wasted across the United Kingdom, with a deep dive into not only the types of food wasted, but also why - as well as the impact of wastage on the environment. ■ 7m tonnes of food and drink was thrown away by UK households between May 2012 and July 2013; ■ 4.2 tonnes of the above food waste was avoidable, ie it could - or should - have been eaten before disposal (for example, bread, apples, or yogurt); ■ For the average household with children, the cost of food waste totalled

£700 a year - about £60 a month; ■ The average UK household purchased around 27kg of food a week; 19% of this was not consumed; ■ Approximately 80% of food and drink is wasted because it either wasn’t used in time or too much was cooked, prepared or served. The top five food types thrown away within the avoidable food bracket were: ■ Standard bread; ■ Fresh potatoes; ■ Milk; ■ Meals (homemade or pre-prepared); ■ Carbonated soft drinks. Land is required to produce food and drink that is subsequently thrown away by UK households. This land is roughly the size of Wales.Tobie Malins, 29, an environmentalist from Brighton, said:

“As a society, we need to become more conscious of the food we waste and think about the environmental impact. “I would love to see better education about carbon footprint from food wastage and what can be done to prevent waste in the first instance - for example, clearer use-by or sell-by labelling.” The Wrap findings are shocking. But there are some positives. For example, food and drink that could have been eaten but was disposed of fell by 21% between 2007 and 2012.

So what does happen to the food and drink we waste? Wrap tells us that more than two-thirds -was collected by local authorities - with the remainder contributing to sewer waste, compost, animal feed, or energy recycling.

It’s worth noting here the concept of Freeganism: the practice of reclaiming food that has already been discarded. Freeganism’s aim is to create an alternative system to the mass consumerism created by society. They will often retrieve thrown-away produce from bins and use these to create meals, thus recycling food and having a positive environmental impact. There are many changes that society can make to curtail the extreme food waste statistics: for example, planning meals and shopping in advance, being clued-up on use-by and sell-by dates, using leftovers to create meals, freezing produce, and limiting portion sizes. Do you feel influence to change your food waste habits? I would love to know your thoughts on the Wrap findings.

Global Showcase of city travel companies at World Travel Market Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG

The world descended upon London’s East End as the World Travel Market (WTM) brightened the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. A pocket of eternal sunshine in the cold autumnal capital, WTM is the UK’s biggest travel showpiece, exhibiting tourist boards, hotel chains, airlines, ground-handlers and tour operators from across the globe in the cavernous exhibition space. Brighton-based travel companies at the event included ResponsibleTravel.com, which organised the 10th annual World Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM.TUI Nederland (part of TUI Travel PLC), a market leader in the Dutch tourism sector, was named overall winner of the awards. TUI Nederland was commended for its work in child protection, in particular their “Say No to child sex tourism in the Northeast of Brazil” project and a campaign across Dutch airports to raise awareness of child sexual exploitation issues among travellers. Speaking to Brighton & Hove Independent before the award ceremony, Krissy Rose, product manager for the company, said of working in Brighton: “We love being by the sea; a lot of our ethos and heart of what we do links with tourism in Brighton. It’s our home and we love it here. We wouldn’t be anywhere else.” Tom Brown, product manager of Natural World Safaris, which is expanding its wildlife-focused holidays to include Antarctica and Latin America tours, said: “It’s so important for us to be at World Travel Market, not necessarily to build new business, but it gives us the opportunity to meet all the suppliers that we work with. ”Brown, whose favourite destination is Antarctica because of “its remoteness, the scale of the landscapes and the wildlife”, is cautiously optimistic about the state of the travel industry, despite the economic downturn.“We are quieter than we would normally be

Tom Brown, product manager of Natural World Safaris, which is expanding to include Antarctica at this time of year,” he said. “But we are consistently growing and I think the industry is coming out of the dip that it experienced in 2009.” Next year, Natural World Safaris will host a very special Antarctica safari with world-renowned wildlife photographer Andy Rouse aboard the MS Ushuaia. The company says it will pose the ultimate Antarctica itinerary devoted to getting the best wildlife pictures and most amazing wildlife experiences. Brighton’s Rickshaw Travel is also expanding its portfolio amid encouraging business growth. Emma Pryke, of Rickshaw, said: “We attended WTM this year to attend the seminars on responsible travel as we are currently putting together our ‘Sustainable Travel Policy for 2014. We have recently launched South Africa as a new destination and we are very excited to be introducing Bhutan as our newest destination, which will be launching at the end of this month. Hidden in the Himalayas, we feel that Bhutan is Asia’s bestkept secret.”

Ms Pryke is keen to extol the virtues of Brighton as a base to work: “Our office is located just a few steps away from Hove seafront, which makes summer lunchbreaks very enjoyable. “We are a very friendly office and can often be found socialising together, whether it is fish and chips down on the beach, or having a cheeky Friday pint in The Wick , our local. “We also try to contribute to the local community where we can and run a volunteering scheme where our employees can spend a day out of the office to help out at a local organisation of their choice.” For more information about the Brighton-based travel companies, visit: www.responsibletravel.com; www.naturalworldsafaris.com; and www.rickshawtravel.co.uk Tom Gallagher is a Brighton-based freelance journalist interested in travel and sport. LIBRA

Mar 21 - April 20 Your life work balance has been somewhat out of kilter of late, time to readjust this imbalance if you want to feel fulfilled. The support you receive, over the next few weeks, from your nearest and dearest will not only be hugely beneficial on a physical level but will bring you closer together emotionally.

Sep 24 – Oct 23 Your health and weight has given you some cause for concern of late. Time to lose those few extra pounds before the holiday season kicks in. But best talk it over with the experts first. A property purchase, move or refurbishment is occupying your thoughts and time this week.

TAURUS

SCORPIO

April 21 – May 21 Heard the phrase all that glitters is not gold? The same is true of people. So if you meet someone new this week enjoy the new friendship but keep your head! Travel opportunities could present themselves this week but this is more likely to be career related than social.

Oct 24 – Nov 22 Organized trips, social or physical activities involving the young are forecast for this week. Any activities you become involved in will open you up to new experiences. You may also find yourself forging, though not necessarily romantic, new and lasting friendships.

GEMINI

SAGITTARIUS

May 22 – June 21 Your wellbeing takes a bit of a back seat as your focus is still on the financial. That said you cannot afford to neglect yourself, if you do you may suffer the consequences later. Things should improve financially over the next few weeks, so take some time out for a work out!

November 23 – December 21 Try to be careful this week about personal possessions as loss is forecast. It could cause a significant amount of discomfort or even embarrassment. It may be you lose your house or car keys or even that token gift of jewellery handed to you by a loved one.

CANCER

CAPRICORN

June 22 – July 22 Now would be a good time to enroll on that dream course or purchase that self-help book you’ve had your eye on. All things educational are well favoured. At home there may be issues involving children. Be prepared to help out but don’t take on the complete burden!

22 December – January 20 Heeding my warning about involving yourself in idle gossip has paid off! There seems to be a lot of bad feeling amongst a close friend group. Perhaps it is time to branch out on your own! If you hit the shops before the seasonal rush you should find a hidden gem.

LEO

AQUARIUS

July 23 – August 22 You could be asked to get involved in charity work or some other financial project. This brings spiritual and financial rewards. Unrelated to this, an offer of assistance makes you see a colleague or friend in quite a different light this week, perhaps even a romantic one!

January 21 – February 19 The secret you have been keeping for some time feels like an increasing burden. This secret may be another’s but is much more likely your own. There is something you are fearful of admitting even to yourself. Admit the truth and learn to forgive. It is time for awakening and new beginnings.

VIRGO

PISCES

August 23 – September 23 This week make sure it is about conflict resolution and not conflict. Try to keep your cool and use some of your legendary diplomacy. Why waste your energy on fighting fruitless battles when the time your energies would be better spent developing that new and exciting friendship that is headed your way!

February 20 – March 20 This is a pretty good time to indulge in the things you love most. By that I mean planning and organizing. You are never happier than when organizing a party or event. Amongst your friends and peers you are the one that glories in the title of events manager. You have panache but your downfall is budget control, be careful!

Road Safety Week asks Brighton and Hove to tune in to our roads

We’re all human: we daydream, get side tracked, run late and make mistakes. But on roads, distractions can be fatal. Road Safety Week 2013 (18-24 November) focuses on avoiding distractions. In Brighton and Hove over 50% of police reported collisions were caused by “failure to look/ judge speed or path properly”. Driving is the most dangerous thing that most of us do on a daily basis and requires your full attention; it’s a major cause of death and serious injury in the UK. It’s easy to feel cocooned in your vehicle, so attempting to multi-task is common. While it’s illegal to use a hand-held phone at the wheel around a third of drivers flout this law while many others use a hands free kit, which is just as distracting. Other distracting activities – such as eating or smoking at the wheel – also increase your risk of crashing, yet lots of drivers admit they do it. Distraction isn’t just an issue for drivers. Pedestrians and cyclists can be side-tracked by their mobile or tablet, or not able to hear when crossing roads due to headphones. Car passengers can be distracting – particularly to new drivers. The charity Brake is asking everyone to tune in to road safety, not putting yourself or others in danger for the sake of a call, text or other activity. Brighton and Hove City Council’s Road Safety team’s “Share the Roads, Share the Responsibility” campaign highlights these key behaviours in minimising risk on the roads. There have been too many local casualties – we all need to be aware and look out for each other.

Striker ignores his doubters to reach 50 goals for Seagulls

Ashley Barnes reached the milestone in the win over Blackburn

Richard Morris

Brighton’s marmite man Ashley Barnes insists there is more to come after he reached his half century of goals for the Seagulls. The 24-year-old registered a welcome brace to secure last weekend’s win against Blackburn Rovers and has said doubters in the stands undermine his confidence.

Speaking after the win he told the club’s website: “I’ve had it before I came here and I’m getting it now I’m here, but it’s just one of those things, it’s not a problem. “I take it on the chin – whatever anyone thinks is their own opinion and everyone has their say but all I want to do is give my 100 per cent. “I’m delighted to get 50 goals and it’s a massive achievement, but obviously I don’t want to stop here, I want to keep going until the end of the season.”

The pair he bagged last time out was the first time Barnes had scored in the league this season despite having registered 27 shots in 13 outings. However, he has impressed Oscar Garcia with his willingness to lead the line in the absence of Leo Ulloa and he remains the club’s leading scored at The Amex. Barnes has also attracted interest from elsewhere, with high-flying Burnley among those rumoured to be weighing up a January move.

Albion launch Christmas raffle Albion players took time out from training this week to help launch the club’s Christmas raffle which will raise much needed funds for AITC disability projects. The charity helps run 25 community sports teams across Sussex giving over 700 disabled people the chance to take part in sport as well as Gully’s Days Out which provide, supervised free days out for nearly 750 disabled young people and

their carers every year. Over 200,000 raffle tickets are in circulation and people can buy tickets at the forthcoming home against Barnsley (Dec 3) and Leicester City (Dec 7). The draw for the raffle which includes a first prize of £2,000 and 14 other prizes donated by local businesses will be made at the Huddersfield Town game on Saturday 21st December.

Oscar faces welcome headache as players return to fitness Richard Morris

Albion enter the latest international break just two points worse off than at the same stage last season. Oscar Garcia appears to have weathered the injury storm which has hamstrung his first few months in the Amex hot-seat with Brighton amassing 21 points from the opening 15 games. Last season, under Gus Poyet, the Seagulls had notched up 23 points by the same stage – with one more win than this campaign. Oscar though has had to deal with an unprecedented number of injuries, with Leo Ulloa, Andrea Orlandi, Liam Bridcutt, Kemy Agustien and Craig Mackail-Smith among the key players to have sat out large chunks of the opening third of the season. Bridcutt returned to action from the bench during the encouraging 3:1 win against Blackburn Rovers, while Agustien was also among the substitutes. Mackail-Smith and Ulloa have been pencilled in for

first team training next month and Orlandi – so often the side’s creative force last season – could be back in the squad in one of the next two games. Oscar then, will have some difficult decisions to make once he has a fully fit roster to pick from. But what team will he pick when everyone is fit? Tomasz Kuszczak is the club’s clear number one custodian, while three of the back four continues to pick itself. However, there is already debate on the merits of Inigo Calderon and Bruno at right back. Calderon has clocked up 37 tackles, one goal, two assists, six blocks and 41 crosses in his 13 appearances. Bruno, who flirted with a midfield role earlier in the season, has one assist, 11 tackles, two blocks and a dozen crosses from his nine outings. Calderon has been beaten by a dribbling player 12 times, Bruno seven, while Calderon boasts a pass completion rate of 82 per cent (400 successful from 488 attempted) to Bruno’s 80.4 per cent (315 from 392). Reigning player of the year Liam Bridcutt will almost certainly lock

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Head Coach Albion manager dedicates Blackburn win to Lance Corporal Jay Brynin…

‘‘

I would like to start by dedicating this victory today to all of our fans and especially James Brynin and his family. Jay was a great fan of Brighton and I am very sorry for his family and I wish them all the best. It was a very emotional day for me today. “It was very important for us to win in front of our fans today because they have been waiting a long time for this and they deserved it. “It wasn’t our best performance. We didn’t start the game too well but after the

goal we began to play really well and deserved the victory. “I am very pleased because the whole team worked very hard to gain this victory. We still have six senior players out injured and we are playing with young players - but they are playing very well. “I was very happy to have Liam (Bridcutt) back. It was always our intention to try and get some minutes under his belt today and he played well. We now want him to be fit and playing well from now until the end of the season.”

down the deepest midfield slot, with Andrew Crofts arguably the Albion’s most consistent performer this season and joint stop scored alongside him. That leaves space for just one of Rohan Ince, Jake Forster-Caskey, Agustien, Keith Andrews and David Lopez. Current form would suggest Forster-Caskey would dovetail most effectively with Bridcutt and Crofts - although Andrews boasts more experience and Ince has been a revelation in almost each of his appearances. Craig Conway, this week recalled to the Scotland set-up, is improving by the game and Ashley Barnes has impressed with his work ethic and link-up play. However, a fully fit frontline would surely include

Ulloa, with Orlandi supporting and Will Buckley on the right flank. Of course, the discussion could be moot. Oscar is unlikely to have every player at his disposal at any time this season. Nevertheless, by the turn of the year he should have most of his key charges back and, considering his relative miracle working so far this campaign, it should make for an exciting remainder of the season.

Conway has divided opinion among supporters since arriving on loan from Cardiff City but the winger put in his best performance to date in the win against Blackburn Rovers and was this week recalled to the Scotland squad. If he continues to improve over the coming weeks he could provide vital ammunition for a returning Leo Ulloa - with the Argentinian likely to thrive from Conway’s crosses. ACCURATE CROSSES*
