Full of life: Celebrating older people and valuing their contributions Impact Initiatives, the Sussex charity, is partnering with other organisations and community groups across Brighton and Hove to put on a number of events for the over-50s from September 28 to October 4. One of the highlights will be the Brighton and Hove Older People’s Awards, held to mark Older People’s Day on Thursday, October 1. The United Nations International Day of Older Persons is a celebration of being “Full of Life” and of the valued contributions that older people make to our society. Unfortunately, the lives of older people are not always full. According to Age UK, about one million older people in the United Kingdom regularly go an entire month without speaking to anyone. As well as organising a series of one-off events and taster sessions, to encourage older people to live a more active and fulfilling life, Impact Initiatives manages a
number of services to improve the health and wellbeing of the over-50s and to combat the issue of isolation and loneliness. St John’s Centre and Café is a vibrant space in the centre of Hove offering regular classes, interest groups, organised trips, and free health promotion/ advice alongside hairdressing, chiropody, and seated massage. Seven days a week, its doors are always open to those over 50, which for some can take the edge off feeling isolated. Stjohn Childs, 78, was one of these people. He said that going to the centre changed his life: “I didn’t realise at the time but I was getting more and more depressed at home. I’d shut myself away and mainly focus on my art. Looking back, I probably wasn’t eating properly or taking care of myself: I felt quite low.“ Stjohn’s daughter suggested he go along the centre to meet people and to have a good

meal, which has had a profoundly positive affect on his health. “I still do the creative things I love, but I mainly do them with other people now at the centre creative writing classes, pottery, painting… I’m always busy and I’ve made new friends. My daughter can’t believe how happy I am and how much better I look.” For those in Coldean, Impact Initiatives runs The Larches community café, which provides a
space for all ages to meet over a coffee, take part in a number of special events, or join one of the many community groups.

Blue plaque in honour of pioneer GP A pioneer of mental health treatment in Brighton and Hove has been honoured with a commemorative blue plaque. Councillor Lynda Hyde, the mayor of Brighton, unveiled the plaque dedicated to Dr Helen Boyle (1869-1957) at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Aldrington House on New Church Road, Hove. Dr Boyle was Brighton’s first woman GP and her ground-breaking approach to treating mental illness changed the lives of countless working class women in the area. As well as working in general practice Dr Boyle founded the Lewes Road Dispensary for Women and Children in Hanover, and later opened the Lewes Road Hospital in Roundhill Crescent, specifically for the treatment of working class women with early stage mental illness. This hospital later became known as the Lady Chichester Hospital and transferred to Aldrington House in 1919. Attending the unveiling were members of the Boyle family – niece and nephew

On unveiling the plaque, Councillor Hyde said: “Dr Boyle’s work to transform the treatment of working class women with early stage mental illness was ground-breaking and transformative, and it’s only right that the city should celebrate the achievements of this remarkable woman. “Hers was, by anyone’s standards, quite a remarkable life, full of achievement, ambition and strength. A life worthy of recognition and celebration, and with her achievements and determination in mind it is my absolute pleasure to unveil this plaque.”

2001 | Tuesday, September 11 The world was reeling from the full impact of the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City. As word filtered through to the TUC Conference audience at the Brighton Centre the initial reaction was “it’s a hoax”. The grim reality resulted in Prime Minister Tony Blair cancelling his speech amid security fears.

A Week in the City Fund
Shoreham Airshow Donations to the official Shoreham Airshow Fund have topped £50,000 in the first ten days. The fund was launched in the wake of the tragedy that claimed the lives of 11 men at this year’s event. The money will go to help the bereaved families and communities affected by the disaster. It was set up by the Sussex Community Foundation, which is working closely with police family liaison officers and the local authorities to identify the immediate, short, and long-term needs of the people affected so that money can go out to support them. Visit: www.justgiving. com/sussexgiving.
Charity
Soccer school Eyesite Opticians has donated money to Albion in the Community (AITC) to fund places on a summer soccer school for children who might otherwise not be able to afford a place. AITC, the official charity of Brighton and Hove Albion, runs the sessions throughout Sussex and prices start from as little as £18 a day. And thanks to Eyesite’s donation, the charity was able to offer free places to ten children in Brighton and Hove. The opticians agreed a long-term partnership with AITC and will donate further funds for similar programmes over the next two seasons.

Gross misconduct
Dog fouling
The 7.24am Brighton to Bedford railway service is one of the most overcrowded in the UK, government figures show. The department for transport released details of the ten most overcrowded services, and said the BrightonBedford service, run by Govia Thameslink Rail (GTR), was at 161% capacity. It was named the seventh worst service for overcrowding. The service is, on average, 434 passengers in excess of its capacity of 716. As part of the Thameslink Programme, GTR will increase the number of trains running through the Brighton to Bedford route - between East Croydon, Blackfriars and other London Thameslink stations. Currently only two trains - 16 coaches in total - arrive at London Blackfriars from Brighton via East Croydon between 8am and 8.49am. Once the Thameslink Programme is completed from December 2018, this will be increased to 48 coaches from four trains from Brighton with many more coaches from East Croydon in trains from other routes.
Two Brighton police officers are under investigation for gross misconduct over a message sent from the scene of the Shoreham Airshow disaster. The investigation relates to a private message sent by two Brighton-based officers to a colleague, who immediately reported the pair to the force’s Professional Standards Department. The two officers have not been suspended but have been assigned to duties away from the public while they are being investigated.
The Roundhill Society, a Brighton residents’ association, is trialling a novel way to highlight the issue of people not clearing up after their dogs. The group has purchased speciallydesigned stencils, which will be sprayed with high-visibility paint on pavements in areas where dog fouling is a problem. Councillor Gill Mitchell, chair of the city’s environment committee, said: ”I hope that we will be able to use the experience of this pilot as we work to improve other areas of the city.”

Glass pod The glass pod set to grace the Brighton i360 is being constructed in France, by the same company which built the London Eye pods. The first glimpse of the pod was revealed, after architects visited the Poma-Sigma factory near Lyon, where it is being created. David Marks, architect and chairman of Brighton i360 Ltd said: “Poma’s glazed pod looks remarkably light, and although still being trial assembled at the factory, you can already see that it will soon become a perfect liquid bubble that 200 people will be able to inhabit as it slowly rises in the sky over Brighton and Hove. The glass is so good, and the assembly so skillful, you have to pinch yourself to realise it is all handmade.” The futuristic viewing pod is ten times the size of a London Eye capsule and has the capacity to hold up to 200 people at a time. When complete, the 48 pod segments will be delivered to the city in approximately 30 lorry loads.

The vision of the Martlets Hospice is to provide those dying in our community with the best possible care.
Trustee Vacancies
Do you have the passion, skills and time available to be a Trustee? The Martlets is looking for Trustees to join its Board. Just as we wish to expand our reach to patients and families we also want to expand our Board to enhance our knowledge, breadth and vision. These posts are voluntary and will focus on the strategic direction and governance of the Hospice, as well as being “ambassadors”. Ideally, we are keen to hear from anyone who wishes to represent our diverse community area of Brighton and Hove and the Havens who can bring relevant and current expertise and experience to our team. You don’t have to have experience of running a hospice to be a Trustee – skills you have gained from other sectors or roles will be just as useful and you can be sure that you’ll learn new skills as a member of our Board. In addition to the six Board meetings each year there are a number of sub-committees overseeing specific aspects of our work. Each Trustee will be expected to participate in at least one, possibly two, committees and also to represent the Martlets at fundraising and awards events, both external and internal. If you can give us approximately 2 days per month (most meetings are in the afternoon/early evening) and it sounds like something you would like to pursue, please read on. We are holding two Open Events in October 2015. These are opportunities to talk to current Trustees and staff to find out what is involved and to hear about their experience. Information packs, including an application form, will be available at each event and if you are interested please do come along. The dates and times are:- 12th & 15th October between 5.30 - 7.00pm
If you plan to attend, please register your interest with Peri Golds. Registering doesn’t commit you to anything other than coming along. Peri is the Executive Assistant to the Leadership Team and will be happy to answer any questions you may have in advance. You can contact her on 01273 273447 or at peri.golds@martlets.org.uk

Costume Games The world’s first Costume Games is set to take place in Brighton - a five-day festival encouraging people to “dress up and play”. The festival is the brainchild of MOSHIMO, the Japanese restaurant in Bartholomew Square. The Costume Games will make its home in the prestigious Old Steine Pleasure Gardens, where a number of themed events will take place over the five days. On Wednesday (September 16), residents will be invited to join local set designers and artists for a “flashmob” arts project, transforming the Old Steine into The Costume Gardens. Lady Aiko, a leading Japanese street artist, will be on hand, creating art to set the scene for the evening’s Japanese theme, with a MOSHIMO supper club, live music, and screenings of Japanese anime films. Thursday sees the Costume Gardens transformed into a Las Vegas Casino where people will be invited to dress up as Elvis to raise funds for the Martlets Charity. On Friday, there will be a 1980s theme with screenings of two iconic movies, Fame and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Saturday will see the Costume Gardens become a base camp for Rugby World Cup 2015’s Costume Carnival – a hive of action where people can visit the Costume Clinic to prepare their costumes for “flash mob” performances and stunts taking place all over the city. Creatives at the Costume Clinic include Graham Churchyard (the costume special effects supervisor of Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Avengers Assemble, and Guardians of the Galaxy), Academy Award winner Lindy Hemming (Topsy Turvy), Vin Burnham (Batman, The Fifth Element), and Day Murch (Batman, Star Wars). A costume awards party – free for all in costume – is planned for the evening. And the festival will close with Sing-a-long-Sunday, with screenings of Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and Frozen. The Batsuit, worn by Christian Bale in The Dark Knight, is also being displayed at the Brighton Museum as part of the festival. Laurence Hill @laurencehill
This is the second year that we have been able to commission artists to make new work for Brighton Digital Festival, and in that time, I have often been asked: “What is digital art?” Truth be told, I don’t have an answer. You might have said 20 or 30 years ago that art generated on a computer was purely digital. But what is it now? One of the key features of digital art is its interactivity– most digital art is nothing without an audience to bring it to life. A painting or a sculpture will exist whether someone is there to look at it or not (I’m sure there are some philosophers out there who might disagree), but like a live performance that goes unseen, digital art without human input is the sum of its parts, and no more. As the festival’s arts coordinator, I have the responsibility of helping to select the work that we commission, and then support the artists through the process of getting that work done, talked about, and seen. You can find full details of the selected works on the Brighton Digital Festival website, but here are a couple of ideas that unite these works, and make them a strong and very exciting collection. First, there are works that insert themselves into the everyday environment. White Noise Boutique and Mood Vendor appear as a shop and a wellness centre in the heart of the city, and function both as art installations and as recognisable public spaces, in which you might buy something or get your mood checked. The Waiting Wall infiltrates the giant advertising board at Brighton Station to display secrets and confessions from your fellow travellers, real human voices emerging from a highly regulated space. Then there are works that consider what it is to be human in an increasingly digital world. Finding Fanon 2 takes place entirely within the world of Grand Theft Auto V, an open world action video game, with avatars of the artists discussing, among other things, the idea of the post-human.
How to Live Forever, an immersive and interactive experience, will explore ideas of how technology might be used to extend life. Familiars is an installation that will use cutting edge digital technology to intercept data and create an environment in which we can experience the physical infrastructure that surrounds us and is so vital to our way of life. Of course this only scratches the surface of
Laurence Hill, Brighton Digital Festival arts coordinator
these complex works, and I still haven’t fully answered the question of what digital art is – so I’m hoping that you’ll come and see the work, share the experiences and decide for yourselves.
Brighton Digital Festival Event of the week Bring Your Own Beamer
September 20, 7.30pm – 10.30pm Venue: Brighton Dome Corn Exchange Bring Your Own Beamer is back for its fourth annual event at the Brighton Dome as part of Brighton Digital Festival 2015. Expect a night of collaborative moving image, projection, live visuals, projection-mapping, participation, and experimentation. The idea is simple: find a space, invite artists, ask them to bring a projector, but the outcome is a creative free-forall of light and colour.

I can help you bypass the truly awful adversarial process of the courts at the time of the breakup JO O’SULLIVAN
Over the next few weeks Brighton will become quieter. Cue …sigh of relief. The children return to school, teenagers leave home for University and the tourists finally start to thin out.A ‘kind of’ calm will return once more. However as a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator I am gearing up for one of my busiest periods of the year. Every year post holiday separations are to be expected. September and October being one of the busiest times of the year for family lawyers with a sharp rise in the number of couples filing for divorce. Regular readers of my column will know that unfortunately these break-ups should really come as no surprise. Many a pre-booked holiday will have become a make-or-break for a relationship and may have been a reason sticking it out through July and August. However come September many couples returning to work after spending more time together will find themselves questioning if they want to continue their relationship. Moreover with the shops around Brighton filled with ‘back to school’ posters and parents busy buying children new uniforms and kitting teenagers out for leaving home many a couple will be planning their own new start. Couples I have seen over the years say that because of having difficulties they tried taking a holiday together but unfortunately this rarely works. So then when in September couples return to their old routines they will question if this life is still what they want. They have spent more time together
over the summer and this will have either clarified long held fears that their relationship no longer works or something has happened over summer to make them think long and hard about separating. When couples come and see me after the summer break I tell them that separation will have a major impact on ‘all’ the family. But the good news is the Collaborative process is built on fairness and putting any children first; we ensure where children are involved the process goes as smoothly as is possible. The process unlike the adversarial route ensures sensitivity from the start
and seeks to minimise the disruption to children. Like this working together makes a huge difference in the longer term to how parenting relationships function in years to come. In my experience September is almost like a second new year as children go back to school, or leave home for University. With the right support and advice it can be a good time for a new beginning. It gives families a few months before the Christmas to gain a bit of clarity about their particular situation before the next holiday period arrives.

Young blues sensation brings skills to seafront Guitarist Laurence Jones is playing with his band at Komedia, Brighton, on Wednesday, September 16 (7.30pm). Laurence was voted Young Artist of the Year in the British Blues Awards 2014 and, in the same year, he won the first UK Blues Challenge, which lead to him representing the UK at the fifth European Blues Challenge in Brussels. Spokesman John Smith said: “At only 23, Laurence has clocked up some serious road miles touring throughout the UK and Europe. In 2013 Walter Trout invited Laurence and his band to play as support on their UK tour. “In April, Laurence released his third album, What’s it Gonna Be, with Ruf Records, featuring guests Sandi Thom and Dana Fuchs.” John added: “Voted Best New UK Act by Blues Matters Magazine

Film festival celebrates the power and beauty of ocean Phil Hewitt @BrightonIndy The Ocean Film Festival world tour takes in Brighton Dome Corn Exchange on Monday, September 14. Tour coordinator Hilary O’Connor said: “Audiences will be able to immerse themselves in the wonders of the ocean without getting their feet wet as the Ocean Film Festival World Tour returns to theatres after a highly-successful first tour in 2014. “The festival, which originates in Australia, will feature a brand-new selection of the world’s most captivating oceanthemed short films and will be shown in 24 towns and cities across the UK. “Designed to mesmerise and enthral, the Ocean Film Festival World Tour showcases more than two hours of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s surface. The films document the beauty and power of the ocean, and celebrate the divers, surfers, swimmers and oceanographers who live for the sea’s salt spray; who chase the crests of waves; and who marvel at the mysteries of the big blue.
“Heart-stopping shots of big wave surfing and adrenalin-inducing scenes of divers swimming with white sharks will leave audiences on the edges of their seats.” Hilary continued: “Each of the festival’s films conveys a deep respect and appreciation for the world’s oceans and the creatures that call them home. “2015 highlights include Devocean. South Africanborn Bruno spent the majority of his life in or on the water. However in 1998 a tragic event left him a paraplegic. In an instant he plunged from carefree surf guide, sailor, scuba diver and traveller to the depths of despair. A chance wave and the restorative powers of the ocean showed Bruno
a new path in life, one that would be rich, full, diverse and salty. Devocean is an inspirational story of life’s lessons as taught by the sea.” Another highlight will be Oceanminded. “The film follows champion freediver Hanli Prinsloo along the coast of South Africa and Mozambique. Her underwater journey takes her into the realm of the ocean’s most feared predator – the shark. “The often-feared creatures are portrayed in a very different light, one of beauty and respect. It’s an adventure full of risks and passions - on one breath!” For more information, visit: www.oceanfilmfestival.co.uk

Musical treasures and indestructible rhythms Seun Kuti – described as the reigning prince of Afrobeat – brings his funk orchestra Egypt 80 to Brighton, joined on stage by London-born, MOBO-winning rapper, poet and journalist Akala. The gig takes place at Brighton Dome Concert Hall on Saturday, September 19 (8pm). Spokesman Chris Challis said: “With songs filled with the corruption, ignorance, malady, sadness, pollution and the many other ills that ravage contemporary Africa, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 create veritable musical treasures, flamboyant, jubilatory songs that make you want to get up and dance. “The illustrious Ransome Kuti family come from the Yoruba people, the largest ethno-linguistic group in Nigeria. “Said to be descended from Oduduwa, the demigod who founded the Ife kingdom in the 12th century, the Yoruba people have always maintained a particular esteem for the youngest family member. “It’s no different for Seun Kuti, the third son to
Seun Kuti and Akala
be recognised by musical and political revolutionary Fela Kuti. Aged eight, Seun (pronounced Shehoun) found himself backstage at the Harlem Apollo watching his father sing and said to himself ‘I want to sing too.’ Fela laughed but let him try anyway...with success, taking control of his father’s orchestra Egypt 80 aged just 14, following Fela’s death in 1997. “Hailed as continuing Fela’s musical legacy, he has been laying down a potent version of those indestructible rhythms ever since. “Now Seun firmly sets the classic Egypt 80 sound in the modern era, fuelled by call-and-response hooks, break-neck tempos and
combative, topical lyricism. With the same energetic and booming voice as Fela, there’s no doubt that Seun is the worthy heir of his father’s hard-line militancy. His songs are arrows that never miss their targets; the corrupt, bribers and oppressors. Seun’s own raging rhythm clearly influenced by rap, citing the likes of Chuck D, Dr Dre and Eminem among his heroes.” Tickets cost £19.50. £2 per order charge. Our gala night on October 2 celebrates the overall winners from all the JP Business Awards trophy winners in the south
We’re celebrating a year of success SPONSOR’S ANNOUNCEMENT
P.A.Windsor & Sons, the Rustington-based kitchen, bathroomand bedroom specialist, is pleased to sponsor the Team Of The Year award for the second year. It is one of a number of prestigious backers for this year’s Johnston Press South Business Awards, which celebrate the best of enterprise in the south. In the past year P.A. Windsor has undergone a significant transformation, opening a custom furnished showroom in Churchill Parade, Rustington. Visitors can see examples of kitchen, bathroom and bedroom ranges as fitted room settings to a level synonymous with the company’s very high standards of finishing plus a broad depth of appliances. All are just a taster of the wide and comprehensive range available. In addition to the opening of the new showroom the company has achieved

another great milestone, being accredited as an Arun ‘Buy with Confidence’ member. Paul Windsor, managing director, said: “Achieving Arun ‘Buy With Confidence’ accreditation was a major step forward for the company and recognises all the team’s hard work to deliver excellence in all areas of the business. “From initial design, planning and installation or our ‘supply only’ service, customers know they are guaranteed the highest level of product and service and can relax in the knowledge they have had real value for
money”. P.A. Windsor has been a family-run business for more than 26 years, now operating throughout Sussex and beyond on special commissions. Paul said: “Having opened up the new showrooms and achieving Arun ‘Buy with Confidence’ membership in the same year just goes to show what a great team I have – that is why I’m very pleased to sponsor the Team Of The Year Award – I empathise with other companies and businesses that strive to put the customer first and deliver outstanding service.
“Peace of mind begins from the moment you contact us for a FREE no-obligation quotation or to discuss the viability of your plans. And as an independent kitchen, bathroom and bedroom supplier and installer we can source from any manufacturer and any appliance provider very competitively because of our size and reputation. All of our work is fully guaranteed, and the company is supported by a comprehensive Public Liability Insurance”. n For more information or a free no-obligation quotation/consultation visit the Windsor showroom, 9 Churchill Parade, The Street, Rustington BN16 3DJ or Free Phone 0800 999 2626. It is NOT possible to enter these awards – the finalists are companies that have already demonstrated their excellence by winning an award associated with one of our newspaper titles during 2014/2015.

Magical CarFest shines at Laverstoke CarFest returned to its spiritual home of Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire over the August Bank Holiday Weekend (August 28-30) for the second of this year’s two sell-out family festivals. It was back in 2012 that Laverstoke, owned by 1979 F1 World Champion Jody Scheckter, was home to the very first of these entertainment-fuelled, fund-raising weekends conceived and hosted by
Radio 2 broadcaster Chris Evans. Between then and the start of this year, the six CarFests had raised more than £3.5m for BBC Children in Need – a figure that is expected to rise significantly once donations from 2015’s two events are taken into account. As tradition now dictates, CarFest South again combined the magical worlds of eye-catching
cars, pulsating live music and mouth-watering food with heaps and heaps of fabulous fun for all the family… and, this time, with some typical festival mud thrown in following all the recent torrential rain in southern England. Scheckter’s personal collection of Grand Prix racers topped the daily Track Sprints alongside Evans’ own ‘Dirty Dozen’ classics, while chartidols Take That joined Paloma Faith, Texas, Jools Holland and Seasick Steve – a regular at CarFests – among the many crowdfavourites on three memorable evenings of live music. Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, too, were luminaries on stage at Laverstoke. The Great British Bake Off pair switched their judging skills to the now customary Sunday afternoon ‘Cakes versus Pies’ competition. Car-loving Hollywood was also one of the many celebrities taking part
in the hill climb show alongside a host of other famous faces from television, music and motor sport including Ross Brawn, James Martin, Nick Mason and, of course, Scheckter himself who was blasting several of his own F1 icons up and down what is the Laverstoke Park Farm drive for 362 days a year. The busy track show also featured a selection of rally cars, supercars, hot rods and even a road-legal powered sofa driven by Edd China, another of the numerous TV personalities present. Evans quite literally kicked off proceedings by opening the new GoalFest feature at lunchtime on Friday and bought the curtain down on memorable weekend when lauding chart legends Take That off stage on Sunday evening. In between, Evans found time to host his final edition of The One Show live from the CarFest main stage on Friday evening
Entertaiment-fuelled CarFest raises funds for BBC Children in Need
and to say farewell to his own ‘Dirty Dozen’ – 12 eyecatching classics from his personal collection that are due to be auctioned next month by Bonhams at the Goodwood Revival. “It’s been the best CarFest ever,” said Evans. “We’ve got to do it again, we’ve no choice. It’s too much fun that’s got to be had!” Following recent tragic events, there was no air display programme. A fly-
past by the Gnat Display team honouring Kevin Whyman who lost his life during a display at CarFest North did go ahead as planned on Saturday afternoon and was accompanied by a minute’s silence in honour of Kevin and the victims of the Shoreham Air Show crash. More information on CarFest South can be found on the official website at www.carfest.org

First Drive: Smart ForFour Does buying the biggest Smart make you the smartest? Matt Kimberley jumps behind the wheel of the ForFour to find out. What’s new? Given that the ForTwo is Smart’s "really small" car, you’d be forgiven for thinking the ForFour was practically a family wagon. But no, it’s only the same size as a Skoda Citigo – albeit a very different sort of attack on the city car sector. You get four doors, four seats and a tiny boot that can be cleverly expanded in several different ways. Looks and image Even if you choose the basic model and the least colourful interior, the Smart is still a bit "look at me!". You just get to choose how bright and funky you want it, and thanks to multiple options for the fabric-covered dashboard and trim inserts, you’re never going to be short of something to brighten your day.
Who would buy one? There’s a very valid case for buying the biggest Smart. It’s got the quirk factor, as well as solid and safe engineering under the skin. Hemed and Kayal enjoy positive results on international duty Bradley Stratton @BradStrat Of the six Albion firstteam players away on international duty during the two-week break from domestic football, it’s fair to say the Israeli duo of Tomer Hemed and Beram Kayal would have come away best pleased from their time away from Brighton playing for their countries. With qualifying for the 2016 European Championships coming to a close, Hemed helped give the Blue and Whites a realistic chance of at least securing a play-off place for the tournament in France next year. The 28-year-old slotted home from the penalty spot in the first half as Israel sealed a 4-0 win over Andorra, with Kayal coming on in his place for the remaining 15 minutes. The pair also played a
half each in Cardiff as they prevented Wales from confirming their place at Euro 2016, holding Chris Coleman’s side to a 0-0 draw. There was also a positive run-out for two of the Seagulls younger players, as Jake Forster-Caskey and Solly March both featured for Gareth Southgate’s England under-21 side. The duo came on in the second half during the 1-0 friendly win over USA under-23s in Preston, with March going close to scoring in his first international appearance. The 21-year-old’s deft chip looked to be heading into the back of the net, but it bounced off the base of the goalpost and away to safety. Forster-Caskey also came on as a second-half substitute as the Three Lions beat Norway in their first qualifier for the 2017 European under-21 Championships. Albion skipper Gordon

In what promised to be a rain-interrupted match, Worcester won the toss and elected to bat first and Sussex got right down to business dismissing the home side for just 210 in 80 overs. Chris Jordan, who has been sorely missed through injury for most of the season, was back to his very best claiming five for 68 from his 22 overs. All the other bowlers chipped in with a wicket apiece. Sussex got off to a slow start in their first innings and when Chris Nash retired hurt with the score on 94 the game was firmly

Seeing Albion’s internationals return from European Championships duty in one piece - mostly - is a good sign for upcoming matches at the Amex. This weekend, I will be joining the many hundreds taking part in the Jacob Schilt Memorial Walk from Shoreham to Worthing. As I write, almost £9,000 has been raised to go towards grassroots football development at Worthing United. On the Roar this week, we are delighted to have Matt Francis, Jadey Yesilada, and Nikki Richardson from Albion in the Community, who will be talking about their work and their participation with the Albion’s Powerchair football team. Racing George Hill @BrightonRace The weather was bright and sunny, though cloud gathered later in the day. The going was Good, Good to Firm in places. Heartsong (6/4 favourite) followed up last week's Chepstow success when taking the 6 furlong fillies' handicap in the hands of Michael Murphy, who scored by half a length for trainer John Gallagher. The form of Brian Meehan's Perkunas entitled him to be 8/15 favourite for the 7 furlong maiden for two-year-olds. Impeded two out, Jimmy Fortune had to work hard to get him to overhaul the hanging Bluebeard with a furlong left, but once he got going he ran on well and the outcome was soon in no doubt. Song Of Norway (9/4) was well backed on this, her first run for Chris Wall in the 7 furlong handicap, and
came from the rear to win comfortably. Ridden out in the penultimate furlong to take the lead off Starlight Symphony, she then coasted to a two and a quarter length success under Jim Crowley. Equity Risk (4/1) is one of the lesser lights in the Roger Charlton stable but managed his first win for two years in the 1m2f handicap. He was brought with a steady run on the outside by George Baker to hit the front with a hundred yards to go. Charlotte Jenner landed the spoils on Safira Menina (10/1), who showed a good attitude and drew away from King's Concerto for a three and a halflength victory for Alison Hutchinson's Newmarket yard. Silvestre de Sousa made all on the grey Rosie Royale (5/1), despite running with
one front shoe missing for Epsom-based trainer, Roger Teal. A one mile race for apprentices ended the card. Jane Elliott's first ride at Brighton was a winning one on Icanboogie (28/1), who returned from a 607 day absence to furnish his new trainer John Gallagher, who recorded a double. Keen in the early stages, he was driven into the lead a furlong out and responded well to pressure to hold Hawk Moth at bay by a neck. The next race meeting at Brighton is Monday, September 14. Gates open at midday with the first race scheduled for 2pm.
