City is ‘too expensive’ to put up homeless families Families without a home in Brighton and Hove may be forced out of the city, after a new policy on temporary accommodation was set to be agreed by the council this week. This comes as the rising costs of rental properties and the restrictions on housing benefits has put pressure on the need for temporary homes. What’s more - putting families up in the city is becoming more and more expensive. In the last five years, there has been 335% increase in the use of accommodation for homeless households, and the latest figures show that there were 1,449 homeless households in temporary accommodation at the end of the last financial year. Brighton and Hove City Council’s housing and new homes committee met on Wednesday, and was asked to approve a policy that could see families put up in Worthing, Eastbourne, or even as far away as Horsham, Crawley, Redhill, Horley, and Gatwick. The report to the
committee said in the past couple of years it has had to source emergency accommodation from outside of the city, and this is expected to continue. “The local housing marke has become more expensive and projections are tha this trend will continue, the report stated. “As a result affordable temporary accommodation is increasingly difficul to procure within the city boundaries and we are therefore procuring accommodation further away in areas where the cost of housing is less than it is in the city. We need to procure and place households in good quality accommodation and this is increasingly out of the city. It said, however, that in certain cases, families could be prioritised for temporary accommodation in the city This includes carers, those will schoolchildren, and those receiving medica care in the city. Accommodation for homeless families can include hostels, B&Bs annexes, or rented properties.

Circus Street market: The transformation begins The demolition of the old market building at Circus Street is set to begin, as developers arrive at the site to transform it into a learning, business, and residential hub. Developers say the scheme will regenerate the area, injecting £200 million into the economy and create 400 jobs. The project includes a new University of Brighton library and academic building with a publiclyaccessible exhibition space, 142 new homes (including 28 affordable), 450 student bedrooms, The Dance Space - South East Dance’s new home for dance, and 38,000 sq ft of new office space, plus workshops offering creative businesses start up accommodation and room to grow. Partners in the scheme celebrated on Wednesday, as the first machinery arrived to start the demolition of the old municipal market building. Dorton Group, the demolition contractors, have 30 years of experience in demolition and 40 employees, many of them
local. Demolition will be completed towards end of 2015 and construction will start early in 2016. All timber from the demolition works will be used for board making and bio-mass fuel. All steel will be re-used and all hard core and concrete will be kept on site to be used on the site construction of the new Circus Street development. Any waste will go to a transfer station for further sorting. Cathedral Group and Dorton Group met with neighbours last week to update them on upcoming works and answer questions. Richard Upton, chief executive of Cathedral Group (Holdings) Ltd, said: “Our neighbours are our first priority and we are working with our partners and contractors to be the most considerate builders in the city to date, working to the best possible standards. “We are very excited to start work here - our ambition is to transform the area into a vibrant new quarter of the city, bringing cultural,
economic and educational benefits to an area in need of some love. Our goal is to make Circus Street the go-to place for Brighton’s creative individuals, innovative business startups, students and nearby residents. This will become a reality in just two years.” Cllr Warren Morgan, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “The council is proud to have played its part in helping to bring regeneration to the Circus Street area. It’s great to see this major project get under way which will deliver much needed homes as well as employment and community benefits, alongside student accommodation that will ease the pressure on the city’s housing stock.” Anne Boddington, from the University of Brighton, said the development will “greatly enhance our educational offer at the university”, and Jamie Watton, artistic director for South East Dance, said it will be, “a sustainable and permanent home for dance in the city”. The council car park on Carlton Hill is now

permanently closed and all parking bays on the east side of Circus Street will be closed permanently and there will be some temporary parking bay closures at key times during the demolition on Morley Street. Works traffic will access the site by entering from the A23 and onto Circus Street. For more information on the project, visit: www. circusstreetbrighton.com

Students hold a refugee-awareness event Prime minister visits with leading speakers at Varndean College Shoreham crash site The refugee crisis has brought out the best in Brighton and Hove, with more than 120 people turning out for a Sanctuary on Sea meeting last week, which saw groups come together to talk about a coordinated approach to supporting refugees in Brighton and Hove. And Khem Rogaly, a 17-year-old Varndean student, came away from that meeting inspired to do something positive. He worked with his fellow students Lola Pickford, Maria Andrews, and Jacob Page, to set up a lunchtime event at his college, which was more than 100 students turn up on Wednesday. They signed up three inspirational speakers to talk about the refugee crisis, in the hope of informing young people at Varndean College and beyond. Speaking at the event, was Alex Ntung, head of education at Migrant Help UK, who shared his personal migration story with the students.
Alex Ntung, speaking to students at Varndean College
Artist Bern O’Donoghue talked about her project, where she leaves small boats with messages on around cities in the UK. “She makes these little boats, thousands of them, she puts them around cities,” said Khem. “She writes facts about the migrant crisis and correcting misconceptions. “The idea of the project is that someone picks it up and they read it and think ‘I did not see it like that’, or if a refugee picks one up and thinks ‘I am welcome here’.” Janee Sa from City Of
Sanctuary also spoke at the event, about what the organisation does in Brighton and Hove. Khem said: “The speakers said at the end of the day what they want young people to do is inform themselves. “We had some students from BHASVIC there too, and they are now going to do something similar there now. There are now lots of people getting involved with this, and getting involved with City of Sanctuary.”
David Cameron made a special trip to meet emergency services staff who were among the first on the scene of the Shoreham Airshow disaster and to thank them in person. He said: “I wanted to come down and pay my respects and give my condolences
to the community and to the families who lost loved ones. But above all today was about coming to meet the emergency services and those who responded so brilliantly and to thank them for the incredible professionalism of what they did.” Mr Cameron visited the Old Toll Bridge on Friday, September 18, to lay flowers and see the tributes left by the community, which he described as “extremely moving”.

CCI: The company
...and went bust, with £3m of your money
The 6,000 sq ft CCI warehouse in Victoria Road, Burgess Hill, is on the market with Stiles Harold Williams
EXCLUSIVE by Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy
From the official Companies House documents, it’s difficult to identify a particular moment when - and why things began to unravel at Coin Co International (CCI). From council reports and committee meetings, it’s relatively easy - with hindsight, at least - to see how officers could have better safeguarded our cash. On the face of it, the choice of CCI was understandable: a Sussexbased company with a track record stretching across three decades. What is less understandable is how - after CCI went into administration - Brighton and Hove City Council was owed as much as £3.3 million (see table below), more than half the £6.2 million the company owed to its “cash-andvaluables-in-transit” (CVIT) customers. Even though money was collected daily from parking meters - and elsewhere - across the city, it appears only monthly checks were made on the company’s performance and the timeliness of payments. As we reported last
week, it could have been worse. As a result of late payments, the amount of money owed to the council by CCI reached more than £4.7 million. At a meeting on Tuesday (September 22), members of the city council’s audit and standards committee were told there were good reasons for choosing CCI: ■ CCI was procured through the East Sussex Procurement Hub framework for which they had already been independently selected and approved as the successful “single supplier”; ■ CCI had provided cashcollection services for the council since 2008 and was based locally in Sussex with more than 30 years’ trading experience and a range of private and public sector clients; ■ CCI offered greater service flexibility and a considerably better price than bigger national/global companies; ■ A credit rating from an external credit rating agency assessed CCI as “very low risk”. Officers reported: “In line with industry standards, the council’s cash should have been kept separate from the contractor’s business and so kept safe. This, together with the very low risk assessment from the credit agency contributed to the view that risks associated with the
financial viability of the cash-in-transit provider had been mitigated.” It has, however, emerged that Baker Tilley, the insolvency administrator, has found that CCI were - unusually - processing its business transactions and clients’ cash and currency collections through the same bank accounts. In addition, CCI had “complex” business arrangements that are now subject investigation by the National Crime Agency. A council report concluded:“With the benefit
of hindsight, however, there were indicators that could have alerted the council to the financial difficulties faced by CCI. There were fluctuations in the time taken for CCI to bank the cash it had collected and an internal review, based on a review of creditor payment days and levels of gearing, noted that this could be an indicator that CCI was struggling with cashflow.” As an unsecured creditor, the chances of the city council getting our money back range from slim to zero.

that coined it in ‘We are doing everything to find out where the money went’
John Baker, the chief executive of the now-defunct Coin Co International, is a former detective sergeant in the Metropolitan Police. In this edited statement to adminstrators, he denies any money was misappropriated. Following the administration of Laker Airways in 1981, I was made redundant and decided to start my own business, trading as Coin Co International. This was a family partnership registered on June 8 1981. Previously, I had identified a problem in disposing of foreign coins, while working at Laker Airways, and decided I could make a living from buying and selling current foreign coins. My wife and I worked from our home address and, although slow to start, [the business] required me to drive all over Europe delivering coins to banks for exchange. Within five years, we had ongoing contracts with British Airways, British Rail, London Underground, and the Post Office - and were employing eight people from a small rented office in Cuckfield. Within 10 years, we had contracts with Deutsche Bundesbank, Deutsche Post, Deutsche Telekom, Allied Irish Bank, British Telecom, and many others - and were employing 14 people, from a small industrial unit at Lindfield. In 1996, our son, Sean Baker, left the army and joined the company as driver/coin-sorter. In the same year, our daughter, Joanne Baker MA, left the Northern Ireland Meat Marketing Board and joined the company as an
administration assistant. Both have worked for the company ever since. In 2001, the company moved to larger premises at 58 Victoria Road, Burgess Hill, and took on additional staff to deal with the increase in work. At this time, the company had a turnover of about £3 million. With the prospect of the introduction of the Euro in 2002 .... we entered into contracts
company was well set to grow. Our approach to cashhandling was going to be different to G4S and other companies, in that we intended selling the coins and notes we collected, and not banking them. It was not our business plan to open “client’s accounts” and keep everyone’s money separate. To explain our approach, all banks charge a percentage fee when you deposit coins and notes,

During the period 2002 to 2005, we collected and processed some 350,000 tons of coins from all over Europe and paid out some £40 million to UK and European charities. A real high point in the company’s history. As expected, in 2006 and 2007, the turnover and profitability of the company dropped back to pre-Euro times of £5 million, but with a much larger client base the

and a similar fee when they supply coins and notes. Our business plan was to copy this model, but to undercut the banks’ fees. With the consent of our clients, we intended to pay them by bank transfer from our account and use their coins and notes to supply floats and cash to retail clients and other businesses in the southeast. We did not want to be just a cash-collecting business, but wanted to make full use of the sorting and counting facilities we had in Burgess Hill. This was explained to all .... new clients and meant they would make large savings on their bank fees. From 2007 to 2010, the volumes of cash being processed increased, with many new local authority contracts being won. So successful was this division that we were emptying some 1,000 parking/ticket machines per day, 365 days per year, and counting and processing something like £500,000 per day. Also during this period, the foreign coin side of our business was growing and,

The vision of the Martlets Hospice is to provide those dying in our community with the best possible care.
Trustee Vacancies
Do you have the passion, skills and time available to be a Trustee? The Martlets is looking for Trustees to join its Board. Just as we wish to expand our reach to patients and families we also want to expand our Board to enhance our knowledge, breadth and vision. These posts are voluntary and will focus on the strategic direction and governance of the Hospice, as well as being “ambassadors”. Ideally, we are keen to hear from anyone who wishes to represent our diverse community area of Brighton and Hove and the Havens who can bring relevant and current expertise and experience to our team. You don’t have to have experience of running a hospice to be a Trustee – skills you have gained from other sectors or roles will be just as useful and you can be sure that you’ll learn new skills as a member of our Board. In addition to the six Board meetings each year there are a number of sub-committees overseeing specific aspects of our work. Each Trustee will be expected to participate in at least one, possibly two, committees and also to represent the Martlets at fundraising and awards events, both external and internal. If you can give us approximately 2 days per month (most meetings are in the afternoon/early evening) and it sounds like something you would like to pursue, please read on. We are holding two Open Events in October 2015. These are opportunities to talk to current Trustees and staff to find out what is involved and to hear about their experience. Information packs, including an application form, will be available at each event and if you are interested please do come along. The dates and times are:- 12th & 15th October between 5.30 - 7.00pm
If you plan to attend, please register your interest with Peri Golds. Registering doesn’t commit you to anything other than coming along.
in addition to Germany, we opened branch offices in Australia, Canada, and Ireland. With over 30 overseas bank accounts and a large number of international clients, trying to produce management accounts within 30 days of the month end always proved difficult. On behalf of myself and my fellow directors, I can honestly say that no money has ever been misappropriated by us and that we have always acted in the best interest of the company, the shareholders, and our clients. We still believe the foreign coin part of our business was viable and most creditors were within payment terms of 90 working days. The cash-handling part of our business has collected, processed, banked, and paid correctly over £900 million for coins and notes between 2007 and 2014. We still genuinely believe that we must have overpaid one or more of our clients during this period and we are still doing everything we can to identify where this money went so it can be recovered. 30 years on: Homeless people need our help more than ever Andy Winter @AndyWinterBHT I saw an advert earlier this week that read “It’s a great time to become a landlord”. It highlighted the fact that rents are up, the availability of buy-to-let mortgages, and the high demand for rental properties. That advert illustrates much that is wrong with housing in our country; housing has increasingly become an investment opportunity rather than a place where people live. The complete distortion of the housing market is the biggest change in the 30 years since I first started working for Brighton Housing Trust. Then there were a small number of people in acute housing need, usually with problems associated with mental health, alcohol, and occasionally drugs. Now it is low- and middle-earners who are increasingly excluded from housing in Brighton and Hove. The average rent for a one-bed flat in the city is more than £850 a month. Less than 2% of rented homes in the private sector are affordable to people on benefits. In Brighton and Hove, people living in private rented accommodation - one third of all households - pay 49% of their income on rent. The housing crisis is the direct consequence of poor policy by governments of all colours. They have refused to reverse the disastrous and economically-illiterate decision taken in the 1980s to move away from public investment into the building of new homes. Social housing
has increasingly relied on private finance, resulting in higher and higher rents. As a result, ever-increasing public funds are used to subsidise rents rather than build new homes, with very few extra homes being built.
Andy Winter is celebrating 30 years with BHT (Brighton Housing Trust)” The Right to Buy - and the betrayal by many of the larger housing associations, which increasingly don’t provide homes with social rents - is just exacerbating the affordability crisis. Of the homes sold through Right to Buy, 40% now rented out in the private rented sector at rents three or four times their former social rents. Extending the Right to Buy will do nothing to improve this crisis. The promised one-for-one replacement of all homes sold through Right to Buy just isn’t a reality. Therefore, it will help only those who are already well-housed with a personal windfall and will take the sale of the good quality council houses to pay for it. That’s two social-rented homes lost with no guarantee of replacement. The question that used to be asked was who will house the poor? The question today is who will house the poor, the middle income, your son, my daughter? But my 30 years at BHT has seen many, many positive advances. Even though we
have more people sleeping on the streets than ever before, BHT’s partnerships with other organisations have prevented twice as many men and women becoming street homeless. Over the years, I have seen an increasing number of men and women move from poverty, exclusion, homelessness, mental ill health, and addictions into housing, improved health and wellbeing, recovery, education, training, and employment.
I am lucky to have the best job in Sussex, working with people in BHT who inspire me, and seeing positive changes in the life of our clients who remain the motivation behind our work. My only regret is that after 30 years the services offered by BHT are still needed, and needed more than ever. Andy Winter is chief executive of (BHT) Brighton Housing Trust.

What is a “Guaranteed Product” and how can it provide peace of mind? With current stock market volatility taking over the financial news on a daily basis, many savers will have concerns as to what to do with their investments. Whilst the majority of investment experts will promote the “ride it out” message, those that are approaching retirement do not necessarily have this option. Those looking to buy an annuity should already be in lower risk funds where exposure to the stock markets are minimal. For those who want to remain invested in equities as they approach retirement and beyond, whilst still locking in a guaranteed income, there are now options to accommodate this.
For more information on Guaranteed Products, or indeed any other part of your financial portfolio, please contact IEP Financial on 01273 208813, or email karin.yardy@iepfinancial.co.uk and we would be more than happy to provide more information. IEP Financial is authorised and regulated by The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
There are four main areas to take into account when planning your retirement: - How long will your money last? With life expectancy ever increasing, our money needs to go further. - Markets will go up but they will also go down during turbulent times. - Interest rate risks - We have had a relatively long period of low interest but expect these to rise at some stage. - Inflation can have a serious effect on your buying power. Depending on your personal circumstances, a Guaranteed Product could be a worthwhile option as part of your overall investment plan in preparing for your retirement.
A guaranteed product places some of your investment into a “guaranteed” pot, whilst the rest remains in other investments. This way you are protecting a portion of your savings, in order to guarantee an income throughout your retirement. A guaranteed product provides income certainty and flexibility, with a guaranteed minimum income for life that could go up, but will never go down. Imagine that for peace of mind. One of the other major advantages, in contrast to an annuity, is the ability to pass your pension wealth onto loved ones, which many products on the current market don’t have. If you answer yes to any of the questions below, it could be beneficial to speak to your Independent Financial Adviser about how a guaranteed product could work for you. 1.Do you want a guaranteed income for life? 2.Do you want your income to have the potential to increase? 3.Do you want tax-efficient income? 4.Do you want to leave any money left over in your investment/pension to your loved ones when you die? 5.Do you want the flexibility of where to invest, but at the same time retain access to your money in case your circumstances change?

Older people must have voices heard by Fairness Commission Mike Bojczuk @mikeboj
"It's not fair!" It’s a common cry from the playground or siblings, to be settled most frequently by teachers or parents. But now it should be on the lips of all suffering from deprivation and inequality. Why? The new Fairness Commission at last gives them a single point of contact. It is set up to listen, and - from their voices - to recommend actions that will form part of the city budgets from 2017 onwards. There is never enough money to satisfy everyone, definitely not enough for the services we all want. But if the majority stay silent, as is often the case, a louder minority could advance changes that will make matters worse. Views and opinions will be sought at meetings and online, but the concern is that the housebound, people with mobile difficulty, or those without IT access may be excluded. Let's also facilitate the gathering of views from centres in areas of deprivation - those needing most help. We need their voices as well. We see the young and the very old as the most vulnerable in our society. Parents want access to good schooling, medical treatment, and safety for their children. Those with very old parents want goodquality care and services for them. Common sense tells us the commission will find that we need better-paid and more jobs, affordable childcare and housing, and decent services for the sick and the elderly. There are 5,000 pensioners living in
disability and in receipt of an attendance allowance who will have strong views on good and poor practice, so their comments need to be heard. A high percentage of pensioners have at least one limiting long-term illness. Simple things such as uneven pavements, pedestrian-crossing times, and advertising boards make walking difficult - even with a walking aid. Those with a car find it a struggle walking to the one parking meter if they choose to pay that way. Difficulty getting to shops or events limits their activities and wellbeing. About 9,000 pensioners in poverty claim Pension Credit and 11,000 claim Council Tax credit, but many who were eligible miss out. Why? Perhaps many pensioners are living in information poverty as well as fuel and food poverty. How can we boast of a digital Brighton when a large number of the population are still computer illiterate and unable to go online to access the help provided there? The cynics will say this commission is yet another cost-cutting exercise, a talking shop where the findings are already being rubber-stamped Yet the members are volunteers, independent, and committed to listen, propose changes, and publish their findings. It will be hard for any administration to ignore the results. Let us at least join in, make sure the disadvantaged are consulted, and commit to see what changes would bring us closer to a fairer and more equal city. ‘RISE up’ with new choir A choir has been formed by a Brightonbased domestic abuse charity, aptly named “RISE up singing”. Led by Kirsty Martin, a nationally renowned musical director, the RISE choir will run rehearsals from next week, with its first performance booked for December, just in time for Christmas. The choir will be drawn from RISE’s network of service users, staff, volunteers, and the charity’s loyal supporters. RISE offers practical help to people affected by domestic abuse in the form of advice, refuge space, and education, and helps more than 1,800 women in Sussex each year. The choir will be sponsored by digital start-up Guevara, as part of its commitment to supporting tight-knit community groups in Brighton and Hove. Rich Philip, Guevara co-founder, said: “RISE does such brilliant work in the local community, working tirelessly to provide refuge space for those most in need. “Collaboration is what we’re all about, our entire business model is based on communities working together to share both risk and reward. attack from the mainstream media - and with few friends in the political establishment - he will need all the support he can get when articulating the bold policies upon which we agree. Our challenge to Labour in Brighton and Hove is to dare to live up to what Corbyn’s win means. When Labour are bold and when they stand up for the voiceless, we will support them. We could start by standing together to safeguard council tax

our role in moving beyond Labour’s policies and calling for the radical overhaul of the political and economic system that lies at the heart of the social and environmental injustices we face. That means working with local communities that are already demonstrating it’s possible and positive to do things very differently, from neighbourhood planning and housing cooperatives to community-owned renewable energy and social enterprises. It means reaffirming our vision of an economy that provides enough for everyone - but doesn’t require people to work all of the hours of the day to stand even a chance of feeding their families. Greens will continue to act on the belief at the heart of our politics: it’s only by tackling climate change and environmental degradation that we will secure our future prosperity, and security
for our children and grandchildren. Recent events, of increasingly-extreme weather events across the globe, flooding in the UK - and the global refugee crisis - show the urgent need for Green policies. The tide of progressive politics and ideas is surging, and it’s refreshing to see policies that many of the ideas Greens have promoted for decades now being articulated by a leader of the Labour Party. The Green Party will continue to show people that we offer a radical alternative to businessas-usual - but that we’re open to working with others to further our shared goals, and we believe politics is better when we do. This could be the beginning of the end of partisan politics and the flourishing of a people’s movement that goes beyond political parties. We must not let this opportunity pass us by.

Rifa-Thorpe Tracey @rifa
This year’s successful Brighton Digital Festival and more broadly the tech conference season as a whole - has seen positive improvements in the gender balance of their various contributors, including artists, speakers, panellists, and organisers. I think we can be pleased about this. We’ve been vividly shown how aware Brighton’s tech and creative businesses are becoming. Both towards the issues facing women already working in our industries (across all disciplines) and towards young women banging on the door to get in. I’m particularly excited, as organiser of SheSays Brighton, to see many of our fabulous alumni and volunteers stepping into the spotlight to organise their own events and widen the reach of our message. We can be proud of a more responsive, equalised scene. But, such a positive experience doesn’t mean we take our foot off the gas. Even a significant cultural shift towards more thoughtful curation of conferences (which I believe is occurring in Brighton in a real, vibrant way) cannot trigger complacency. If anything the opposite is true: I think we must now work even harder to give as many women as possible access to the support and empowerment offered by our own networks. At least two people have said to me in the past couple of weeks that the gender gap in the Brighton tech industry is “not a problem”. Well, a cursory glance at statistics, or at conference lineups shows that there is still work to do. For our part, at SheSays Brighton this coming winter we’ll continue - and hopefully expand - our programme of networking events for women in tech and creative. We are still regularly oversubscribed, so we need more space, hosts, and sponsors to come forward who believe in equality of opportunity. One key message to women I’d like to share as Brighton Digital Festival draws to a close is this: don’t hesitate to put yourself forward. Take inspiration from the amazing contributions women have made right across the festival.
Rifa-Thorpe Tracey, SheSays Brighton
Daily, we still see the challenge of hesitancy among women to offer to contribute to events, while arguably less qualified men are keen to have their voices heard. And this endemic imbalance can be solved without the guys doing anything at all. We as women must find our confidence and put ourselves forward; whether to organise, give talks, or become panellists. Be unafraid to take lead roles. Let’s keep going.
Brighton Digital Festival Event of the week FlexerandSandiland-Weighting
September 22-26, 8pm-11pm: Free Venue: Brighton Dome Café Bar Weighting attempts to realise what is on the surface, a literal impossibility: How digital representations of people can have an immediate effect in the physical world. This year’s Brighton Digital Festival sees the unveiling of a new choreographic video installation from Brighton-based artist Nic Sandiland commissioned by South East Dance. In the work a number
of performers are presented on two video monitors attached to a three-metre wide set of weighing scales which tilts and falls to their movements as if they were physically present in the space. Nic will be leading a public discussion based on his investigations during the festival.

‘The Good Divorce’ Jo provides a free meeting to discuss which dispute resolution option is best Open Saturdays and evenings to be flexible around your job ■ Collaborative Law ■ Mediation ■ Negotiated Settlements
As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Family Mediator I work with separating couples and families across Sussex. I established my own legal practice first and then later trained in offering mediation. I choose to practice the Collaborative process rather than the usual adversarial process because I wanted to help couples and families through this difficult period of change in the most positive way possible. I am not motivated by a system whereby one party wins and the other loses; where one side is pitted against the other. What motivates me is achieving a fair outcome in the most dignified and respectful way we can. Sometimes I am preaching to the converted to an extent. The couples who choose my services often do so because they say they want the most amicable divorce possible. Because they are determined to put their children’s needs first. They recognise they need help to do this but this is their ultimate goal.As the name suggests the process is built on collaboration and finding common ground.
Jo will be delighted to discuss (free of charge and confidentially) how she can assist you and your family.
Divorce is a process not a one off event and for this reason I find the work I do with couples through mediation very rewarding; this is where we see how the future might look.Where we work out the nitty gritty of everyday challenges associated with parenting when you are no longer together.

I can help you bypass the truly awful adversarial process of the courts at the time of the breakup JO O’SULLIVAN
When it goes well it is rewarding for all involved; but however amicable your divorce, however much you want to put your children first there will inevitably be challenges along the way. Why? Because children’s needs don’t stay the same; as they grow up and as parents move on there will be challenges. This is why I also signpost all the parents I work with to Parenting Programmes. There is a wealth of research that has
been undertaken into evaluating parenting education programmes both here and in the US and in the next few weeks I will be writing in more detail about findings both here and on my blog. Research shows that an amicable divorce is only the start; throughout the separation and for years to come parenting after parting presents many, many hurdles. Because of this I work closely with local parent programmes. At first parents may be resistant, they feel judged but these programmes can be hugely beneficial and really make a difference in how things pan out.The local courses I recommend cover the following topics ……many of which we talk about in mediation sessions. 1. When and how do you tell the children you are separating?
2. How and when to separate? 3. Your principles and objectives as parents? 4. What arrangements for the children will you make? 5. What is your family’s story? 6. Issues and changes that effect the children now and possibly in the future (medical treatment, schools etc) 7. Implications (including financial) of the agreements of 1-6 Rather than feeling judged many participants find the process really positive and supportive. Most commonly they say that listening to other parents in a similar situation helps them see their own situation with more clarity…….and that has to be a good thing! For more details about Parenting After Parting visit my website to find local experts.

Albion in the Community: Helping young p Richard Morris @albioninthecomm Young people have spent more than 4,800 volunteering hours helping an array of projects across the city as part of a National Citizen Service (NCS) programme run by Brighton & Hove Albion FC’s official charity. The NCS is a governmentfunded personal and social development programme - aimed at people aged 15 to 17 - which gives young people the chance to gain new skills for their future. It also encourages them to take a more active role in their local community; earlier this year, Albion in the Community (AITC) secured the exclusive rights to deliver the scheme in Brighton and Hove. The charity began delivering the NCS scheme in 2012 - initially to 30 young people - but winning the exclusive contract for Brighton and Hove has allowed AITC to significantly expand its NCS programme. Within two years, the number expected to take part will reach almost 600 for the summer programme alone. By 2018, that
figure will rise to more than 800. Shortly after AITC landed the £2.4 million three-year deal, 180 young people embarked on their own NCS adventure with the charity. Those teenagers have now graduated from the NCS, having made a genuine difference to their local community - clocking up the impressive 4,800 hours of volunteering time between
them. The young people were split into 12 groups of 15 and enjoyed an action-packed week of outward-bound activities in Wales before returning to Sussex for a week attending skills development workshops. Each team then chose a local project to deliver as part of the volunteering phase of the NCS - project-managing, sourcing materials from generous local companies, and working alongside charities or community groups. These projects varied from befriending
events with local elderly people to revamping community gardens and holding fundraising events for Brighton and Hove charities. And Dan Garrett, NCS programme manager at AITC, said all the young people who took part should be proud of their efforts. He said: “This summer’s projects continued to raise the bar for the quality of the community work our NCS programme delivers. “The level of engagement and commitment I saw from the young people involved was fantastic. Seeing the teams so dedicated to making a difference in our community made me very proud and I was hugely impressed with their enthusiasm to deliver successful projects. “Each community group or charity we worked with really appreciated their efforts and were happy with the outcome. We even had several organisations write letters of commendation or issue certificates in acknowledgment of their hard work. “I hope everyone involved is proud of their achievements.” Richard Morris is media officer for Albion in the Community Squid Squad added a colourful mosaic at Dean’s Youth Club

Soulful star with top ten hit brings his show to Brighton Soulful singer-songwriter James Bay performs at the Brighton Dome on Monday, October 5. In the past 10 months, the 23-year-old has sold out an astonishing run of shows for an artist yet to release his third EP. In London alone he has filled Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, Dingwalls, two nights at St Stephens Church, Scala and Koko. James’ debut single ‘Hold Back The River’ is playlisted at Radio 1 and the video reached more than a quarter of a million views in a week. The young musician from Hitchin had a lot of success in 2014, becoming one of the most talked about new artists around. As well as a run of sell out tours, he soundtracked the Burberry SS15 show and stepped into the Radio 1 Live Lounge with a memorable performance
of ‘Let It Go’. His EP of the same name reached No. 7 in the iTunes album chart. Doors open at 7pm. Elle King and Samm Henshaw also perform. Tickets cost £21.

Watch Beardyman creating a unique album in real time Multi-award winning musical mastermind Beardyman is embarking on a UK tour with his interactive show One Album Per Hour. The British comedian and multivocalist heads to The Old Market, Brighton, on October 21 and 22 (8pm). One Album Per Hour sees Beardyman use a collaborative creative process, gathering song titles and genres from his audience suggestions and turning them into a uniquely stylised album produced live in front of their very eyes, with the use of his custom built Beardytron_5000mkIV. This is a music production space-ship unveiled at TED global that allows him to improvise cutting-edge, studio quality music in real-time, allowing him to do things no other musician can. The past year has been busy for Beardyman. One Album Per Hour was turned into a live web series on YouTube, where guest ‘producers’ included Jack Black, Tim Minchin and Daniel Sloss. He has released an album on Tummy Touch Records, touring throughout Europe and the USA. He has
appeared on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2 and performed live at BBC 6 Music’s Festival here in the UK. In 2013, Beardyman beat One Direction in the UK charts with the EDMdefining Eat Sleep Rave repeat in collaboration with Fatboy Slim. He won the UK Beatbox championships consecutively until nobody else dared to enter. Actor, writer and animator Mike Judge was so impressed with his vocal abilities he personally insisted that Beardyman lent his voice to several characters on the latest series of Beavis and Butthead. As well as becoming a regular face at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Beardyman was granted his
Beardyman
own show at the prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival, appeared on Conan (TBS) and stole the show at the BBC Comedy Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Now One Album Per Hour sees music at its most unique with Beardyman interacting with the audience to a level that few dare, creating a live show, which combines off-beat humour and music into one seamlessly improvised experience. It’s up to the audience what happens and how the album takes shape. Tickets for the show cost £18 (£16 concessions). To book visit theoldmarket. com or call 01273 201801. Dynamic exploration of hip hop and dance Shobana Jeyasingh Dance brings its brand new work Material Men, twinned with the much-acclaimed Strange Blooms (2013), to Brighton Dome this autumn in a special dance doublebill. In Material Men,contrasts in style between classical South Asian dance and hip hop are the starting points for Shobana Jeyasingh’s dynamic exploration of rhythm, location and two dancers’ shared history. Sooraj Subramaniam, is an bharathanatyam soloist and performer in some of Shobana Jeyasingh’s finest work. Shailesh Bahoran, is a phenomenal hip hop dancer and choreographer who made a name for himself with his crew Illusionary Rockaz. Shobana Jeyasingh brings her inimitable choreographic eye to the proceedings. Material Men features a new score by Australian composer Elena KatsChernin, commissioned
with funding from the RPS Drummond Fund, which will be performed live by The Smith Quartet. Additional sound design will also be provided by Leafcutter John. Strange Blooms completes the double bill. This is an ensemble work inspired by the cellular life of plants. It aims to pit the energy of eight dancers against the pulsating music of Gabriel Prokofiev‘s score. Strange Blooms was originally performed as part of the company’s 25th anniversary celebrations. This time, the dancers are Avatâra Ayuso, Antonette Dayrit, Sunbee Han, Jason Mabana, Estela Merlos, Wayne Parsons, Jack Thomson and Hian Ruth Voon. Over the course of her highly individual choreographic career, south Indian-born artistic director Shobana Jeyasingh has created work for a variety of venues and contexts including theatres, outdoor and indoor sites
and on film. What sets the company’s work apart is a refusal to be confined by conventional notions of theatrical form and space. For the Venice Biennale 2012 the company made an atmospheric work (TooMortal) designed to be performed within the pews of historic churches, and in 2010 a dynamic, allfemale piece (Counterpoint), which was danced among the fountains of Somerset House in London. Her work is usually drawn from personal experience and rooted in the complex cultural dialogues that define 21st century urban life, as well as a firm belief in the intellectual, as well as the physical, power of dance. The company’s work draws on Jeyasingh’s south Asian heritage, rooted in India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, but it is translated in to her trademark aesthetic. This is not to say that the company’s work occupies
Explore race, gender, and class through collection of portraits A frank, funny and provocative look at modern life through the eyes of a young black woman is coming to Brighton Dome. Portrait will be performed in the studio theatre on Wednesday, October 7 (7.30pm). Inspired by her own experiences, writer and performer Racheal Ofori takes the audience on a journey through a series of portraits of different black women to explore themes of race, sexism and class in her debut solo show. The performance uses music, dance, laughter and poetry to challenge cultural perceptions, directed for Edinburgh and its UK tour by Kate Hewitt. Racheal Ofori is a Londonbased writer, performer and rising talent. She trained at Italia Conti graduating in 2013. The first theatre production she performed in was a boisterous modern adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which attracted rave reviews. She went on to play Nerissa in The Merchant of Venice at Shakespeare’s Globe and has

performed her own poetry in London and NewYork. Kate Hewitt is the associate director on Sam Mendes’ production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal,Drury Lane. She won the 2014 JMK Directors Award for her production of Caryl Churchill’s Far Away at the Young Vic. Kate will be working with the National Youth Theatre on their Epic Stages project this August. Other theatre credits include a staged reading of Comment is Free by James Fritz (Old Vic
New Voices 2015). She has worked as an associate director on Medea, directed by Mike Bartlett (Headlong Theatre Company UK tour 2012-13), and Electra directed by Carrie Cracknell (Gate and Latitude Festival 2011). Kate has worked as assistant director to Sacha Wares, Dominic Cooke and Michael Attenborough. She was the co-founder and co-creator with You Need Me international theatre company on projects How It Ended (Arcola 2009 and Edinburgh Fringe) and Certain Dark Things (2010 Tobacco Factory and Underbelly, Edinburgh). Composers including Michael Nyman, Kevin Volans, Krishnamoorthy, Orlando Gough and Gabriel Prokofiev are among past collaborators and new music artists have been equally important resulting in work with Scanner, beatboxer Shlomo and DJ and producer Niraj Chag. Jazz-electronica duo return with thrilling new album
Offbeat Irish music duo Zrazy are back with their first album in ten years. Vocalist Maria Walsh and saxophonist/pianist Carole Nelson combine silky vocals with a stunning musicality of mature soul, pop and jazz-electronica in The Art of Happy Accidents. The record is out on Monday, November 2. The musicians hope to add to their list of accolades, which include the OutMusic USA Award for Best Album with Dream On and an Irish Gold disc for No1 smash hit single
‘Ooh aah Paul McGrath’ (Italia ’90). The duo offer a sophisticated take on the world with hints of Tracey Thorn, Grace Jones and St.Germain. The pair formed in 1992 and, since then, they have tackled social and political issues head-on through their music, from feminism to abortion to gay rights. The Dublin-based jazz-popsters are playing some special shows, including a gig at The Brunswick Pub, Holland Road, Brighton, on October 29 (8pm). Call 01273 733984 or visit www. thebrunswick.net.

Our gala night on October 2 celebrates the overall winners from all the JP Business Awards trophy winners in the south
A commitment to nurturing business SPONSOR’S ANNOUNCEMENT
A COMPANY with a commitment to supporting new local businesses is sponsoring the Start Up category in the Johnston Press South Business Awards. Wannops LLP is a full service law firm providing legal services throughout the UK and Europe, offering a diverse range of legal services to clients as well as having a number of court advocates providing representation in both the lower and higher courts in commercial, civil and criminal matters. During the past 10 years, the company has expanded and now has more than 140 members of staff, including solicitors and barristers based in Chichester, Worthing, Bognor Regis and Brighton following mergers with Marsh Ferriman, NLH Law, Buchell Williams and Ronnie Tremlett & Co. James Brotherton, the senior partner of Wannops LLP said: “We are proud to sponsor the New Business Start Up award – to those just starting out, never forget

that your greatest asset is your staff, whose dedication and professionalism will be what sets you apart from your competitors.” “Every new business needs to take time to understand what their customers want, and what they want from the business – you need to keep sight of what you are there to do, to provide your customers with a highquality, responsive service that is competitively priced, and in a manner that never forgets that your customers
are at the heart of everything you do.” “As a business that can trace its roots back over 100 years, all of us at Wannops LLP wish all the finalists nominated in the Start Up category the same success that we have enjoyed.” n For more information about Wannops LLP, contact 08453 458 844 or visit www. wannops.com. The Johnston Press Business Awards bring together winners from Johnston Press titles’ own
award winners. It is NOT possible to enter these awards – the finalists are companies that have already demonstrated their excellence by winning an award associated with one of our newspaper titles during 2014/2015. That means winners from awards run by The News in Portsmouth, the Worthing Herald series, the Chichester Observer series and Littlehampton Gazette, and the Eastbourne Herald are already in line for honours.
For more information on the Johnston Press South Business Awards, including details of how businesses can get involved as category sponsors, get in touch with Jeanette Hockley. Call 07841 800401 or send an email to jeanette.hockley@jpress.co.uk

Rolls-Royce showcases super-luxury motors at Revival
Vintage festival Goodwood Revival saw super-luxury car manufacturer RollsRoyce entertain tens of thousands of visitors at the historic motor race meeting.
UP TO
The Rolls-Royce Radford building at the March Motor Works – this year titled ‘March Mews SW1’ – presented an appropriate tribute to the Finishing Shop of Harold Radford
(Coachbuilders) Limited, South Kensington. Harold Radford & Co Limited were longestablished retailers of Rolls-Royce motor cars who, under G H
£3,500
Radford, developed a bespoke coachbuilding business in the late 1940s named Harold Radford (Coachbuilders) Limited. The coachbuilding business became synonymous with amendments to suit the rural lifestyle of the landed gentry, developing their ‘Countryman’ range of conversions to RollsRoyce motor cars. A new Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was displayed in the ‘Finishing Shop’ – a factory Standard Steel bodied car fitted out with all the Radford embellishments that created the sensational Countryman, featuring many of the range of over 40 luxury optional extras as offered in Radford’s brochure. A raised boot improved the capacity of the luggage compartment and a convenient addition included the split folding rear seats, which allowed owners to stow bulky
luggage for continental trips. The car presented was exceptionally rare, being the finest surviving example of only three originally built and a past Pebble Beach concours winner. Rolls-Royce was represented on the motor circuit throughout the event by a handsome 1954 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Drophead Coupé by Park Ward, finished in Brewster Green, with Dark Green hood and Green hide. One of only 28 Silver Dawn Drophead Coupé models to be built, this model was one of only eight to feature ‘high line’ wing styling, making it an exceptionally rare motor car. The car was loaned for the occasion by a customer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Joining the course director’s entourage, special guests of the Company were conveyed in period luxury, with the silence of the Silver Dawn’s ‘magic carpet ride’ only
marginally disturbed by the ticking of the original mechanical clock. Departing the Revival, invited guests returned in contemporary luxury, as they were conveyed in exquisite Rolls-Royce Phantom, Ghost and Wraith motor cars handbuilt at the home of RollsRoyce, located within the Goodwood Estate, a short distance from the motor circuit. The unmistakable sound of wartime vintage aircraft continued after the Revival, with more than 40 Spitfires and Hurricanes taking off from Goodwood Aerodrome on the following Tuesday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Aircraft from across the UK, US and Europe took off over the Rolls-Royce head office and manufacturing plant, before making onward journeys for flypasts of airfields linked to the battle.

Hyundai Tucson 'always destined to be a game changer' After 36 months and 30,000 miles, Hyundai Motor UK revealed the Tucson 1.7 SE Nav CRDi - the predicted UK bestseller - is set to retain 50% of its original value, helping to make it the most affordable vehicle in its class. Compared to its predecessor, ix35, Tucson buyers benefit from an 11% increase in residual value – the outgoing ix35 SE Nav 1.7 CRDi held 39% of its original cost. After 36 months and 60,000 miles, Tucson will still carry 42% of its value – another best in class figure with the closest competitor holding 40% of its initial price. In addition to strong residual values, PCP customers will only pay £16 per month to cover the cost of Service, Maintenance and Repairs (SMR) – resulting in the lowest Whole Life Cost in the CSUV segment. Tony Whitehorn, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor UK, said: “AllNew Tucson was always destined to be a game changer in the UK, and this is immediately clear in the significant step up from the outgoing model. “Tucson offers both private and fleet buyers low running costs, stylish looks, and value for money. Year to date ix35 is our second bestseller in the UK, so we’re confident that Tucson will continue to increase Hyundai’s presence in the CSUV segment.” Martin Wilson, fleet director, Hyundai Motor UK, said: “ix35 was hugely popular among our fleet customers, and now Tucson is set to present them with an even more attractive package. The 1.7 CRDi offers low running costs combined with a very low Whole Life Cost – making it an easy decision for fleet buyers.” The AllNew Tucson is available to road test and purchase from your local trusted dealer, Brooklyn Hyundai, Claremont Road, Seaford, East Sussex, BN25 2BA. For more information, call: 01323 893040.
