Dear Parents and Girls,
Looking at the range of political news stories this week - Grexit, rules for the EU Referendum and so on - I reflected that one of the most important skills we can acquire in life is the art of compromise and one of the most important qualities of a leader is the ability to achieve consensus. This idea was reinforced by a visitor we’ve hosted this week from the Department of Education who’s been shadowing staff at the school. He described to us his job where he has to ensure the safe passage of education policy through both the Commons and the House of Lords and the tricky waters of compromise and consensus that have to be negotiated there. Such skills are challenging for most of us as adults (especially headteachers who are naturally bossy!) never mind young people, and so it is important that from early on we give girls the opportunities to observe and practise them. We try to introduce collaborative working throughout the school and encourage team and group activities wherever possible, of course, and we encourage debate through School Council, Debating Club, the Feminist Society, the Politics Society and so on, but it’s also important that girls have role models who excel in these areas. For this reason, among many others, I will be sad to see three of our wonderful governors leave BHHS this summer. Father Phil Ritchie has been Vicar of All Saints Church, Hove, since 2008 and a parent governor for the past two years. He and his family are moving to Oxford this summer. On Monday he delivered a fantastic assembly about his views of the church’s attitude to LGBT men and women, giving us plenty to think about the nature of tolerance and compromise, showing how he follows a path of inclusivity whilst being sensitive to the views of others in his Church. Phil has been a wonderful support to the school, working regularly with the RE department and contributing to our assembly programme. We shall greatly miss him and his daughters. Emily McWhirter is an old girl of BHHS and was Head Girl in 1986. She has a PHD in Nursing and is Director for the Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance, a charity that provides pre hospital helicopter emergency care to the most critically ill and injured people following severe accidents in the South East coast region. In her job she has to make decisions at hugely stressful points and run a highly efficient team – the art of compromise and continued over 2014-15 Issue 31: 1
