Dear Parents and Girls,

We’ve had two big alumnae events this year at BHHS – a ‘vintage tea party’ to which we invited old girls who left the school in the 1940s and 50s and, just last Saturday, we hosted a picnic for over a hundred alumnae who been at the school from the 1960s onwards. They were both great events – lots of stories and laughter, and I learned a few things: the first is that no matter how naughty teenage girls might be today, they cannot hold a candle to the outrageous things their forerunners got up to, particularly if they were boarders – they regularly climbed on the roof at night; hid in the shrubbery to avoid their music teacher, and often helped themselves to the canteen stores. Some of their stories would make your hair stand on end!

The second thing I learned was that some of my predecessors had a nice line in cutting remarks. My favourite was from a Head in the nineteen seventies who apparently used to say: ‘You, girl! Your hair reminds me of two French cities – Toulon and Toulouse!’ But the most important thing I learned was what a wonderful thing it is to have good and lasting friendships that we make at school and what a privilege it is to be part of a school that encourages girls to be the best they can be as individuals and yet fosters a lasting spirit of camaraderie.

The spirit of friendship exists not just between the girls, but between the staff and we are sadly saying goodbye this summer to a number of colleagues from the senior school. Two have only joined us recently – Miss Razavi (Director of Sport) and Mrs Thomas (French and Spanish) and are both leaving us for family reasons. Mrs Edwards (Drama and Classics) has been at BHHS for eight years and is returning to Sweden with her family. She has done a huge amount to enrich Drama teaching at the school, in particular at Sixth Form level. Mrs Armstrong, our Development Director, is retiring after a business career of almost forty years, initially in the hospitality industry and latterly in education.

She joined us in 2009 and has had a considerable impact on the financial stability of the school.

She has, for the past two years, been instrumental in re-energising our BHHS Alumnae. Finally, two long-serving members of the teaching staff are also retiring: Mrs Howell (Head of Geography and Year 10 Manager) has taught at BHHS for the past 16 years and Mrs Burnet-Smith (’Madame B’) has taught French and Spanish here since 1983. Two of our most able teachers and distinguished in their subjects, both women have also had an enormous impact on the extra-curricular and pastoral life of BHHS. Many girls and colleagues over the years have reason to be grateful for their dedication, energy and intelligence. They will be missed by us all.

Our Year 13 girls – the Class of 2015 – also leave us today and we are looking forward to celebrating with them at the Leavers’ Ball tonight at The Grand.

We wish all the staff and girls who are leaving BHHS every success and happiness in the future.

trip to ricardo

This week, Year 10 visited Ricardo, an engineering consultancy company.

It was a great opportunity to see first hand a STEM company in action.

Ricardo specialise in combustion engines and transmission systems and we got to see engines big and small. Highlights of the visit included seeing the JCB engine used to break the land speed record and the assembly of the award winning McLaren M838T engine. The girls had a tour of the site and saw cutting edge technology being used to develop more efficient and ecofriendly engines. Thanks to the girls for being a credit to the school as always.

sixth form taster days...

The Sixth Form Taster Days offered us an extremely valuable insight into the Sixth Form and allowed us to experience A level-style lessons, which was especially interesting in subjects that are not available to study at GCSE. We all felt that we were a lot better informed, after the two days, about the Sixth Form and what it had to offer, which put us in a better position for choosing what we want to do after GCSEs. Highlights of the two days were definitely the compulsory PE taster session - boxercise!

- and the talk from James Dawson on how women are portrayed in the media, which addressed an issue which affects us all, although everything about the two days was very different and enjoyable. Hearing from ex-pupils on their personal experiences of the Sixth Form was very helpful and it was inspiring to hear about the varied careers that they are pursuing. Overall, a great two days!

On the 11th and 12th of June the year 10s experienced what it is like to be a sixth former at Brighton and Hove High School. The days comprised of 6 lessons in subjects that had been chosen by each girl, a free period in which to relax or do some independent reading into a topic of interest and several enrichment activities, including an interesting and insightful talk on feminism by the author James Dawson. Everyone in Year 10 thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

In particular, I extremely enjoyed having the opportunity to try out lessons as they would be in the Sixth Form. I opted for French, Spanish, Latin, History, English Literature and English Language.

In the Modern Foreign Language classes there was a focus on music and verbal communication. This was a great change from GCSE level as the entirety of the lessons were taught in the language. This meant that all aspects of language could be worked on at the same time: speaking, listening, reading and writing. In both classes we watched music videos and voiced our opinions on them, giving us a greater insight into the culture of the two countries through the universal medium of music. I believe that immersion in the language and culture will greatly help to improve our own language skills and widen our understanding of the world.

I also greatly enjoyed the Latin lesson as there was a greater sense of independent work and we looked more in-depth into the language and literary techniques used. I found literature particularly interesting as so much thought goes into word choice for poetry to ensure that it fits with the meter, conveys the meaning, and inspires emotion. In addition to improving our logical thinking and analytical skills I find that Latin is extremely helpful in understanding English and I delight at the chance to study language and history at the same time.

The History class was very different from anything I have ever done before in a lesson.

It began with Mr Sherwood informing us that a murder had taken place and we must investigate to discover the culprit. We were given a few facts and, after discussion, each group took turns to go into his office and ask him some questions. If we asked the correct question we were rewarded with an envelope containing more information. Little by little we managed to piece together a picture of what had happened in the real murder case of Robert Dunne and why. I know that everyone in the class had great fun and enjoyed the opportunity to be inquisitive and use logic and inference to solve a problem independently.

These skills are precisely what is needed in history as well as many other subjects and the activity, though it may not be precisely what every A level class will be like, gave us an insight into how lessons in the Sixth Form focus on helping us grow as a person and improving both our hard and soft skills.

Both of the English classes were extremely interesting, but also extremely different. In English Literature Mrs Ashdown demonstrated her acting skills by stumbling around the classroom to give a sense of how Shakespeare intended the audience to know it was dark at the beginning of Othello. We then continued to look at the first scene of the play, discussing how the characters and their words relate to the past and the present and how our views differ from those of Elizabethans. In English Literature Mr Edmunds asked us to look at children’s books and see which features were the most engaging to aid our discussion about how we learn to speak. It turns out that the most engaging feature is interactive sound; even an adult finds it difficult to resist pressing a button that plays the sound of a cat, cow or clock. Both lessons were highly enjoyable, aimed at improving our analysis and understanding of real world context. The only problem now is that I don’t know which one I want to study.

Overall, the two days were a great experience for all involved and, although I did not have enough options to try them, I have been reliably informed that the other subjects were just as engaging, exciting and enjoyable.

the launch of UCAS and writing our personal statements

Just when we thought we could sit back and relax for summer, after months of non-stop revision, this Monday we were launched into a much-anticipated UCAS day. For those of you who don’t know, UCAS stands for the ‘Universities and Colleges Admissions Service’. In fact, you may well have heard teachers use the classic incentive, “this will look great on your UCAS” whilst enticing you to become a B.L.O.B. or to take part in the gruelling Duke of Edinburgh award and so on. UCAS day began with an introductory talk by Mike Pudan who is a recruitment officer at the University of Brighton.

He gave us some key information about how to write the perfect personal statement and some top tips on how to avoid plagiarism, clichés and general waffling. We learned that we must be analytical rather than descriptive regarding the various extra-curricular activities we take part in. For example, instead of listing all the things you have done, you should analyse how they have helped you acquire important skills such as teamwork and organisation. In addition, we were amused by the ridiculous quotations, which some people have included in their statements in the past. One of them included Ron Weasley’s famous phrase, “bloody brilliant” in the Harry Potter series.

Brighton & Hove High School GDST Furthermore, we also had the opportunity to try out the website, ‘Unifrog’, which is a brilliant tool, useful for providing you with all of the universities, which offer your desired course. Sam Morrow, a representative from Unifrog, informed us that by using our predicted A level grades, Unifrog can also separate the courses into ‘aspirational’, ‘solid’ and ‘safe’ depending on each course’s entry requirements in comparison to your predicted grades.

What’s more, it can even order your desired th courses into numerous categories, some of which include: ‘percentage satisfaction’, ‘social life’, ‘hours of lectures’ and even the ‘distance from home’! This will prove to save a lot of time in the run up to applying to university.

Although it seemed daunting at first, I think we all feel a lot more relaxed about UCAS and excited to start applying for our Tickets priced £8 & £5 (conc) which dream courses or indeed, to consider a include wine & nibbles gap year.

Many congratulations to all the girls who performed at Prize Giving this week. I very much appreciate all the extra commitment, including coming into school just for rehearsals, but I hope you found the effort worthwhile. Certainly the audience enjoyed your performances.

This would be a great opportunity for you to support all the excellent work that the Parents’ Association do but also show everybody what talented musicians we have in school. As the term moves to a busy conclusion, I am aware of taking time to enjoy all the great events. As I write I can hear the noise of excitement after practising baton changes! I hope that many of you will be able to join us next Tuesday for our sports day, which I am sure will be a spectacular event. A special thank you for your support for the crossover van; raising funds for the homeless in Brighton, the own clothes contributions and supporting parents swimming the Channel for the Children’s Hospice. These remind us all of our fortunate position and are important lessons for the girls about supporting our community. Many thanks for your support and I look forward to seeing you at the activities in the last few days.

It has been exciting to see our string players developing their skills this year with our wonderful violin/viola teacher, Ros HansonLaurent. As our year 6 violinists sadly leave us at the end of this term, I am hoping to recruit more string players for the Junior School orchestra, so am looking to our young string players as they progress to grade 1. If your daughter plays an orchestral instrument at grade 1 level or above, regardless of whether their lessons are within school or outside, please encourage them to see me about joining the orchestra next term.

great excitement in year 2… the butterflies have hatched!

On Monday the girls in year 2 were very excited to find that over the weekend most of their butterflies had hatched out of their chrysalises! There were 8 butterflies in the net in Miss Lyon’s room and 10 in Mrs Blacker’s. To add to the excitement, on Tuesday we managed to capture one of the butterflies hatching on film (take a look at the Year 2 blog on their Firefly page).

To finish the process we let the butterflies out in our garden, they were a little reluctant to leave the net at first but eventually they all flew off to explore their new home.

eco warriors - bug hotel

At Eco Warriors this week we had a visitor – Lucy Clark from Wilderness Woods come to help us build a bug hotel. We used pallets to create the main structure and have filled it up with lots of twigs, old pots, fur cones, thistles and even bricks to create lots of hidey holes for the bugs to live in. It has been built inside the pond area so that it won’t get disturbed but do take a look at it as it can be easily seen from the path. Well done everyone, a great job.

Early Years had a great mini-trip around the world this week; stopping in three different countries from around the globe and having a whistle-stop tour of all the country had to offer.

With Mr Keefe they ‘travelled’ to Canada where he taught them some interesting facts about the beaver, ice hockey and of course they tasted some authentic maple syrup direct from his homeland. Next it was off to South Africa with Miss Wells where the children learned how to say ‘hello’ and ‘how are you’ in Xhosa. The girls also coloured in the South African flag and even had the chance to learn an African dance. Finally, it was back to home turf where they stopped into visit Mrs Cardownie Clare and finished off their morning by making cucumber sandwiches in jolly old England. Mrs Cardownie Clare taught them some new and interesting facts about Great Britain. What a day!

On Monday the girls visited different countries around the world for our Geography and Languages day. They took part in lots of exciting activities, including Irish dancing, making pizzas and Chinese calligraphy. In the afternoon they watched a theatre performance about Britain.

year 6 orienteering & book award

The Year 6 girls had a wonderful morning orienteering at the Birling Gap last Thursday. The weather was very kind to us and we were all taken aback by the beautiful views. The girls learnt a great deal about map reading and following a compass bearing. The afternoon was a smarter affair as we sat and watched the ‘East Sussex Book Award’ ceremony at the De La Warr Pavilion. We are so proud of Olivia Taggart, Amelia Ghassemi, Alyssa Bryan and India Hoffmann who all won prizes for their entries into the various competitions set by the East Sussex librarians. It was a great day and the girls’ fantastic behaviour was noted by many.

Northampton, Wednesday 24th June | We travelled to Northampton on Tuesday afternoon for the GDST Rounders and Tennis inaugural tournament on Wednesday. The tennis squad was made up of four Year 4 girls Amy, Amelia, Elinor and Eliza and one Year 5 Olivia to face teams fielding mainly Year 6 players. After a good journey and an overnight stay at the Premier Inn we woke up to a sunny if slightly windy day and after a hearty breakfast we arrived at Northampton High School. The format was four singles and two doubles which meant we could play all of the girls in every match.

Our first match was against Bromley High (which was extremely tough as they were the eventual 2014-15 Issue 32: 8

winners) and we lost 6-0 despite playing some good tennis. With our spirits undented we then took on Oxford High and Amelia won our first full point in the singles and Eliza and Elinor managed a draw in the doubles, scoring a half point meaning we lost 4.5 to 1.5. The final game of the morning session was against the home team, Northampton High and Eliza won her singles and Amelia managed a draw resulting in a loss 4.5 to 1.5. Revitalised by our lunch break we came out in the afternoon session to face Newcastle High and had a resounding win with Eliza, Elinor and Amelia winning their singles and the pairings of Eliza with Elinor and Amelia with Olivia winning their doubles. The final game of the first round was against Kensington Prep and Amelia again came good with a singles win with Eliza and Elinor managing a draw in their doubles match resulting in a 4.5 to 1.5 loss. This left us fifth in our group of six and meant we played Nottingham High for 9/10th place. We fought hard but a combination of injury, sun and fatigue meant we lost 4.5 to 1.5. The girls all played some great tennis with some good serving, fantastic passing shots, an attitude of never giving up and despite playing older girls, accredited themselves superbly coming 10th out of 12 teams. We are already looking forward to next year when they will be a year older, a year stronger and with the experience of this year behind us.

In the Rounders, we took 6 Year 6 pupils, to play in a tournament of 14 schools split into 2 groups. The game set up was 18 good balls of 1 innings. This makes the tournament incredibly harsh and every move counts. The girls listened really well to our new tactics and had fantastic team spirit. We got off to a strong start beating Nottingham 6-4½. As we moved into the second game, the opposition had a particularly fast bowler, who made the batting very challenging. We didn’t quite take enough risks and narrowly lost 4-4½ against Kensington Prep (who went on to win the group). We then played 2 tremendous games and convincingly beat Norwich High 8½-4½ and South Hampstead 13-3.

Following a quick lunch break, we played 2 back-to-back games, but we were just not on form. We mis-fielded a few balls allowing the opposition to score full rounders from weak hits. We narrowly lost both games to Sydenham, 3-4.5 and Newcastle 3-5½. We then finished 4th of 8th in the group and went on to play off with the other group for 7/8th. We met Ipswich High, played our game and again won convincingly 10½-7½ to finish 7th of 14 overall. Throughout the afternoon, we saw some fantastic long barriers from Phoebe, Jess and Olivia, some incredible catches from Olivia and some very consistent bowling from Holly. A great team performance. Well done to all of the girls who behaved impeccably and represented Brighton & Hove High School with pride.

Wednesday 24th June 2015 | The U-10B team played a fast paced rounders match against Brighton College. It was our turn to bat first and we took a while to get going, but before long the girls were getting into the swing of things. Emma scored 2 rounders and the team worked hard to push our score up to 5½ rounders for the first innings. BC came to bat and our fielding was quite strong. The team worked hard and BC scored 8½ rounders. We had a quick team discussion and we entered in to the 2nd innings with all guns blazing. Sienna scored 2 rounders, Sydney scored 1½ and by the end of the 2nd innings we had scored 7½ rounders. BC came back fighting. Alice made some excellent decisions whilst working as 3rd deep and Emma worked tirelessly on 2nd base, managing to stump out 3 girls. Sydney demonstrated very accurate bowling skills and the whole team showed a real improvement. Unfortunately we made some small errors and BC took 13 rounders in the 2nd innings. Our player of the match went to Emma for her commitment to the game and excellent batting skills. Unfortunately it wasn’t a win today with 21½ rounders to BC and 13 to us, but we were very impressed with the team’s commitment and drive. Well done girls.

Wednesday 17th June 2015 | U-10A v Brighton College | BHHS fielded first and were led out by some truly accurate, consistent bowling from Rithika. Jamie at backstop returned the ball efficiently. A few misfields and a slight occasional loss of focus took BC to 7½ rounders. BHHS came in to bat, with some lovely hits by Rithika and Rachael and rounders from Jaia and Marianna bringing our first innings score to 6. BC had a great fielding team (twins) at backstop and second base who shut down many rounder attempts. In their second innings BC made some big hits and again a few poor decisions and the occasional misfield from BHHS took them to 16½. There was a great catch from Elodie and a lovely bowl and catch from Rithika.

In their last innings BHHS tried to put the pressure on and made some brave attempts on bases, but the BC fielding was too efficient and more often than not they were stumped out. There were 2 great rounders from Liberty G, Hannah D scored 1½, Elodie hit every ball, and Rachael again hit the score sheet. Final score 16½ BC to 12½ BHHS. Players Fielder Elodie and Batter Jaia. Umpire’s Choice Elodie and Liberty G. U-9B v Brighton College | BHHS won the toss and elected to field first. Elinor stepped up at the last minute as bowler and did a solid job. Although they made some questionable decisions through not watching the play, generally BHHS stayed focused in the field. Iona as backstop consistently got the ball back to Elinor in the bowling square holding BC to only 4½ rounders. In their batting innings BHHS were slightly tentative, not taking risks in some cases. They made some great hits and then stayed on post rather than maximising on them. A great rounder and a half was scored by Ellie and half rounders from Mia G, Iona, Katie, Isabella and 2 half rounders from Martha. Final score 5 Brighton College 4½ BHHS. Player of the Match was Iona.

U-9C v Brighton College | BHHS lost the toss and went into bat first. Unfortunately a lack of experience caused 2 of the team to be run out by their team-mate early in the innings. Some of the B team played again due to illness in the C team and their confidence having already played was evident. Some great rounders by Ava, Stella, Elinor and Rebecca amongst other great hits. 6½ rounders to BHHS. BC came into bat against some confident fluid bowling and fielding from Alber.

Rebecca worked really hard at backstop and along with some good long barriers from Amelie and Isabella held BC to 4½ rounders, a BHHS win. Well done girls. Player of the Match was Ava H. 2014-15 Issue 32: 10
