Dear Parents and Girls, Here’s what our girls and staff did in the past week: Thursday: A wonderful Concert for Jacob raises £2,500 for the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund - girls sing, dance and play beautifully (thanks Mr Lloyd and Mrs Ashdown).

Friday: our dance-a -thon raises over £8,000 for Sports Relief. Every girl in the school takes part. Brilliant fun and fundraising (thanks Miss James) Saturday: Year 11 GCSE girls in school working on their coursework in English and Computing (thanks Mrs Ashdown and Mr Whiteside).

Sunday: Drama department working all day with the girls to put finishing touches to House Plays (thanks Mrs Schilt and Miss Waller).

Monday: Hustings for the Sixth Form Leadership team - 14 girls address the whole school in their bid to lead their peers - brave and proud. (thanks Mr Edmunds and Ms Boyes); A Level Dance students take their final practical exam.

Tuesday: We host 70 Japanese girls visiting from a school in Tokyo (thanks Mrs Mashford); all of Year 8 go on a Maths and Science Day to Chessington World of Adventure (thanks Mr Higgins); Sixth Form go to watch Giselle by the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House (thanks Ms Boyes and Mr Whiteside); GCSE Dance students take their final practical exam.

Wednesday: House Play competition. Girls perform, directed by Sixth Formers - Grey win.

Well done! Music students from across the school take their Associated Board exams.

national women’s council conference a sixth form report...

On Tuesday 8th March, Kate Hughes, Lauren Waller, Rebecca Linford and Marianne Scotland attended the annual National Women’s Council conference, hosted by Croydon High School (GDST). The topic this year was ‘Stop Rape. Educate’ and was focused on how the way society views rape needs to change. With speakers from charities helping both female and male victims of rape as well as activist groups, we were all very excited about what we would learn. We weren’t disappointed. The subjects covered by the speakers, although challenging, were extremely interesting and inspiring.

For example, we were all very surprised to hear that the majority of rape victims knew their attacker, which disproves the popular myth that rape is a crime committed only by strangers. It was also interesting to hear about male rape victims as we all realised that this is a problem that is greatly overlooked. It also made us think that perhaps subjects like rape and consent need to be taught more thoroughly to male students as well as female. These topics were emphasised by group discussions that brought up some very valid as well as controversial points. All in all the conference was an amazing afternoon and we all came away feeling very inspired to do more. If anyone has any questions or is concerned by what we learnt at the conference, please feel free to approach either of us at anytime.

my final ever marketing article... by amelia hughes It is with great sadness, that I write my last ever article as the Marketing Officer on the Sixth Form Leadership Team 2015-2016. On behalf of all of us, we wish the new Leadership Team all the best in their roles. We just know that they are going to enjoy doing all the things that we have revelled in being a part of, such as the brilliant GDST Young Leader’s Conference in Bath as well as the classic morning routine of delivering notices. It feels very much like the end of an era for us and we really are going to miss visiting the Junior School and spending hours counting up guild money with the Guild Team. We have so many great memories from our time on the Leadership Team, including organising the Staff Lip Sync Battle and the Annual Charity Fashion Show and we wouldn’t have swapped it for the world.

I also speak on behalf of the House Captains and Deputies who would like to thank all the girls for their keen participation and contributions to House Events; they couldn’t have done it without you.

Good luck girls, you’re going to love it!

On Friday 18th March, 2016 BHHS challenged your daughters to ‘Jiggle Generously’ for 12 hours from 7am until 7pm. This meant a very early start for some who arrived looking bleary eyed to begin the days ‘jiggling’ with a contemporary warm up which helped to prepare them for a very busy day ahead. From the first minute until the last, lots of girls from Year 7 to 13 participated in a variety of dance styles from Hip Hop to Charleston to Contemporary and Flamenco. Girls in Years 5 and 6 also took part which meant that staff and over 500 girls were energetically dancing to YMCA amongst other party hits! Come 6pm and the girls were starting to feel very tired so they enjoyed a calm contemporary class in which they were able to wind down after an energetic day of ‘jiggling generously’ and finish our 12 hours feeling extremely proud.

So far we have raised raise an amazing £8, 000, with more to be counted. Well done to everyone who took part in such an amazing and inspiring day!

maths challenge year 10 maths success competiton Isabelle Hoffelner, Katie Hoffelner, Emily Kennard and Natasha O’Flynn took part in the UKMT Maths Team Challenge on Friday 26th February at Lancing College.

The competition consists of four rounds: the group round, the crossnumber, the shuttle and the relay. The girls displayed mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills over the course of the day and were placed a very commendable eleventh out of twenty-four schools in the region. This is a great achievement and one of which the girls can be very proud.

2015-16 Issue 22: X: X4

On Friday 11th March Eleanor Briddock, Qinglu Chen, Rachel Cruickshank and Alice Gornall took part in the Further Maths Support Programme Year 10 Maths Feast at Dorothy Stringer School. The competition consists of six challenging rounds requiring different skills and strategies for success.

The girls competed against fourteen teams in the region and were placed a brilliant and well-deserved second, missing first place by one mark! Well done!

british physics olympiad

Congratulations to our Year 11 physicists on having a go at the annual Physics Challenge Competition run by the British Physics Olympiad. This very challenging paper involves applying physics to solve new and complex problems and all girls should be proud of their achievements. A special mention must go to Eve Hull for achieving a Gold Award this puts her in the top 3% in the country. Maya Wall, Lucy Haggis, Eleanor Thomas and Eleanor Palmer also achieved great scores and received Bronze Awards.

and science week...

We had a great time during National Science Week!

On Monday, we had the ethanol rocket challenge, with Gurney managing to send a plastic bottle 40 feet across the sports hall.

The gregarious and ever funny Richard Robinson entertained Years 8 and 9 on Tuesday and almost lost his voice by the end! Tuesday evening was the family STEM challenge, which was a resounding success.

We had the inter-house science and engineering challenges on Wednesday lunchtime with Mrs Smith, Mr Goold and Mr Marsh as judges. Lyttleton built a raft that could seemingly support an elephant without sinking!

Thursday saw the mobile planetarium in school with Y10 being awestruck at the wonders of the universe.

A big thank you to the girls for taking part and enjoying the week and to everyone who helped, particularly to Mrs N Smith for the hugely enjoyable STEM family challenge and to the wonderful Science Technician team (Mrs Budd, Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Buxton), without whom this week would not have been possible. Here’s to next year!

Another fantastic offering of House Plays, written by the Sixth Form, were presented yesterday. The audience were taken back in time with the Kardashians, learnt about the lost plays of Shakespeare, witnessed secret Bake Off love affairs and finally went on an adventure with Tarquin and Dandy Mandy to Australia. Judge and old girl Sarah Cantillon was very impressed by what she saw and despite crowning Grey as House Play winners she was very complimentary about each and every House. Well done girls, you should be very proud of all the hard work you put in and the brilliant performances you gave as a result.

I think we can all look back at this term with great pride. So much has been achieved and most importantly, enjoyed! There has been great successes in many areas, huge participation in a variety of events and activities and the girls have done so with great enthusiasm, tenacity and perseverance.

I think they certainly deserve to take a break, hopefully reflect on the contributions they have made and be ready to do it all again next term!

I hope that all of you have a super break and we look forward to the highlights that the summer term will bring.

As part of our 140th Anniversary we shall be turning the whole school (including Nursery) into a Victorian school on Friday 15th April.

We ask that girls come to school in Victorian clothing and hope that the Easter break will give you a chance to organise the outfit!

year six crystal mazes

The Year 6 made crystal gardens in their science lessons.

We left the gardens to grow from our crystals for a few days and here and some of the results.

junior sports relief week

The Juniors were busy last week (14-18th March) with a week of activities. There was a lunchtime Netball shooting competition, where students saw how many goals they could score in 30 seconds. After two terms of working on our netball skills this has been a hugely popular event. Over 45 girls took part in Years 3-6 and Elodie E took the Easter Egg prize with a score of 13.

In PE lessons girls prepared for the shuttle run challenge. How many could they do in 2 minutes? They all gained sponsorship for the event and with enormous determination and encouragement from their friends ran it during Sports Relief week. There was a great deal of competition and a drive to beat their personal targets and the event was well supported by family and friends.

On Friday 18th pupils dressed up in red and white, the Sports Relief colours and brandished their purchased wrist bands; it was a sea of colour across the school. Lots of superb outfits were seen as lots of the girls dressed up as athletes and sports stars. After lunch Years 5 and 6 joined the Senior School in the big Dance-a-thon. Not to be left out Years 3 and 4 had their very own bumpball tournament run by Mrs Blacker which looked a great deal of fun!

On the day we raised £630 but we are waiting for all the sponsorship to come in. So far the total is approx £1,800 and counting! We’ll keep you posted on how much we’ve raised but we would like to say a HUGE thank you to all those who have got involved and supported this year’s efforts.

year 3 african mask workshop

Year 3 were visited by Miss Webster of the Education group who came to speak to the girls about the history behind African masks. The girls learned that they were originally made from wood from the “miracle tree�. They painted their own masks which needed to be symmetrical in design and after learning a routine they performed to the rest of the school wearing their own masks.

year 6 pupil qualifies for british rhythmic gymnastic championships

Congratulations to Hannah D, who competed in the British Open Apparatus Championships and Group Seeding on Friday in Stoke.

Hannah performed a routine with her espoir group on floor. The group qualified and have secured their place at the British Championships which will take place in Liverpool in July. We look forward to seeing how Hannah and her group get on and wish them luck with their routines.

informal concert 2016

We were treated to an evening of wonderful music on Monday as nearly 60 talented musicians of all ages put themselves forward to perform at the annual BHHS Junior School Informal Concert. I know many girls suffered with nerves before the concert, but they managed to overcome these and demonstrate the impressive results of their practice and determination. We are very lucky to have so many talented and confident girls at this school who were well supported by an audience of proud family and friends. Thank you to everyone who performed and many thanks to the parents and family who were able to attend.

Mrs Roberts Congratulations to the thespians in Yeas 3 and 4 who performed brilliantly to their parents on Tuesday in their comedic take on the tragic story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Being Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary this year, the girls leapt into character, recreating the classic tale, known by many. Thanks go to Mr Baynes, Mrs Donley, Mrs Rose and Mrs Roberts for all their hard work in helping to put together their play.

Thank you to those of you who got crafty for our 140th anniversary themed Easter egg competition – we received a great many creative designs that were painted, glittered, pinned and incorporated into magnificent designs. It was very difficult to choose the winners amongst so many designs and the eggs looked absolutely eggsellent!
