Autumn

October–December 2012 We are the south coast’s premier multi-arts venue, hosting over 600 annual events of music, dance, theatre, comedy and more. brightondome.org  01273 709709

In our Brighton Dome Studio (previously Pavilion Theatre) you can experience some of Wordsmith, our mini-festival celebrating the English language – just part of a new direction from our theatre and music producers. We mark Black History Month in October, get our sides aching during Brighton Comedy Festival and top it all off with rambunctious Christmas fun from The Lost and Found Orchestra. There’s some fresh air blowing through the doors of Brighton Dome – why not follow it in?

Theatre  p4 A programme of new, exciting theatre starts here. To be experienced throughout our venues and beyond, this first season includes the latest work from Hoipolloi’s Hugh Hughes and award-winning playwright Simon Stephens, presented by Paines Plough, plus handmade magic from Paper Cinema and an excursion to a life-drawing class with Brighton based artist Sue MacLaine. Get your fill of theatre year-round, not just during Brighton Festival in May.

You get back to London and the noise of the place and the dirt and the colour and the roar of it. I can’t actually. What I can’t really do, for now, at least is work.

Simon Stephens is an Olivier Award Winning playwright. His productions include Harper Regan at the National Theatre, Punk Rock at Lyric Hammersmith and Marine Parade, which premiered at Brighton Festival 2010.

In a city full of push and pull, with constant chatter and hum you can barely find the time to breathe. You want to get away. You deserve to get away. There is a choice – you can take everything you love with you or leave it all behind.

Motherland

Co-commissioned by Brighton Dome

‘ In Ohad Naharin’s unmistakable choreography, wild impulses of energy – ecstatic, angry, artless – are sent hurtling through classically shaped phrases of dance.’  The Guardian This exciting young ensemble of international dancers from Tel Aviv’s   world-class company mark their first   ever UK visit with a bold and dynamic company retrospective. Batsheva Ensemble is led by choreographic supremo Ohad Naharin. Like Brighton Dome & Festival resident

artist Hofesh Shechter (who has both danced with the company and worked with Naharin), Batsheva are defined by a gritty urban energy and rare musical groove. Performed to a sensational score ranging from Goldfrapp to Vivaldi, Deca Dance is a 21st-century remix of major moments and audience favourites from over 20 years of sublime dance-making.

Inching its way through airbrushed beauty, boob jobs and Botox, victim-blaming, slut-shaming, the might of motherhood and the challenges of childlessness, Motherland is a funny, moving show about having it all. Spurred on by the Spice Girls, Simone De Beauvoir and Caitlin Moran, VDT’s multi-talented ensemble of men, women and children go into battle with the big boys, arguing against an oversexualised definition of femininity to ask ‘what is it that we really, really want?’
