As the refurbishment works to our Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre progress we are uncovering exciting stories from our rich heritage. We recently unearthed a number of skeletons belonging to an historic Quaker burial ground that existed before the Royal Pavilion Estate was built. Meanwhile, our Concert Hall is filled to the rafters with shows for all and we're also taking some Brighton Dome magic to new places across the city.
p4 Dance
In other news, we are delighted to be joining forces with Brighton & Hove Music & Arts, who provide music education for young people across our city. This means we can offer more chances for younger generations to enjoy and be enriched by cultural experiences.
p29 Children & Family
And this summer we unveiled a new Blue Plaque to honour ABBA who won the 19th Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden on our Concert Hall stage in 1974.

FOURTEEN DAYS
Following BalletBoyz latest hit tour Life which came to Brighton Dome in 2016, they return with four new works and an audience favourite. BalletBoyz are celebrated world-wide for their stunning performances on stage, in film and TV, and have a reputation for exceptional technique and innovation. In four new works making up the first part of the evening, choreographers Javier de Frutos, Craig Revel Horwood, Iván Pérez and Christopher Wheeldon were teamed with composers Scott Walker, Joby Talbot, Charlotte Harding and Keaton Henson and each given just fourteen days to create their pieces. Playing with the concept of balance and imbalance, the result is a dynamic and varied programme of dance and music.
Fallen forms the second half of the evening, choreographed by Russell Maliphant and set to a powerful score by French film composer Armand Amar. Fallen won the National Dance Award for Best Modern Choreography in 2013. ‘Dancers soar and rebound off each other's bodies, orchestrating a paradox of muscular impact and weightless flight that I've never seen on stage’ The Guardian Co-produced by Sadler’s Wells in association with artsdepot

50 Song Memoir

Songwriter Stephin Merritt of leftfield pop heroes The Magnetic Fields catalogues an epic new work - 50 songs, each one dedicated to a year of his life – in a magnificent theatrical live staging over two nights.
Join Stephin as we spiral through a beatnik upbringing spent in Buddhist retreats, and stagger home from the glamorous excess of 80s New York discos, in two magical evenings of a personal history told through understated indie pop records.
Staying true-to-form with another epic, conceptual album (their breakthrough record 69 Love Songs, was as the name suggests) 50 Song Memoir is a five-disc chronicle of 50 years on earth. This theatrical live rendition features a multiinstrumental Magnetic Fields septet and is directed by the award-winning Jose Zayas (Love in the Time of Cholera). The stage is filled with 50 years of musical artifacts and an eclectic set that features everything from reel-to-reel tape decks to shag carpets, synthesizers to tiki bars.

SPECTRUM SPECTRUM is a Brighton Dome music project dedicated to nurturing and cultivating our vibrant local music scene, kindly supported by The Pebble Trust. Due to the refurbishment of Brighton Dome’s Studio Theatre, our monthly SPECTRUM music nights are hitchhiking their way to cosy new spaces, whilst we also deliver a series of seminars that feature fresh voices of our local scene.
With the award-winning duo Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker as special guests, Thompson draws on old favourites and tracks from his latest album, Acoustic Classics Vol 2, to showcase his genre-defying mastery of the guitar. It is a mastery that has prompted Rolling Stone to proclaim him as ‘a perennial dark-horse contender for the title of greatest living rock guitarist’. This production was originally commissioned by HOME in Manchester as part of the Music and Film Project, supported by Film Hub North West Central, part of the BFI Film Audience Network, and the PRS for Music Foundation.

What If I Told You? Written and performed by Pauline Mayers Directed by Chris Goode Throughout Pauline’s life, she has defied assumptions based on her gender, background and race. At every turn she has torn up the narrative that society tried to impose on her. Now she is ready to tell her story – entwined with the story of James Sims, self-ascribed ‘father of modern gynaecology’ who operated on slaves without anaesthetic. There is a workshop available for groups to accompany these performances. Please contact rob.jones@brightondome.org for more details
In a blend of dance and theatre, What If I Told You? invites us to pause and reconsider the stories we tell about our past and the history on which we build our futures. Air Play Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone This Christmas, enter a world of flying umbrellas, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen. Air Play brings to life the very air we breathe, weaving together breathtaking circus, comedy and dazzling scenic effects for a family show that captures both the wonder and the excitement of the season. Two siblings set out on an unforgettable adventure in which the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary, and air, wind and space become agents of astonishment. In epic set-pieces of uncommon beauty, fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, and confetti turns into the night sky. Through it all, laugh-out-loud comedy is never far away. With visual images seemingly sewn from the sky, this poetic ode to childhood will enchant and electrify both the young and the young-atheart. So come ride the wind and see your wildest dreams take flight.

London Philharmonic Orchestra Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony Eugene Tzigane conductor Inon Barnatan piano Beethoven Coriolan Overture Piano Concerto No 5 (Emperor) Symphony No 3 (Eroica)
‘If I understood war the way I understand music, I would conquer him!’ said Beethoven about Napoleon Bonaparte. In music of brilliance, brio and beauty, the landmark ‘Eroica’ Symphony and mighty ‘Emperor’ Concerto confront the man who reshaped Europe, while the Coriolan Overture probes the psychological cost of power. Combining Beethoven’s miraculous inventiveness with the youthful energy of conductor Eugene Tzigane and the award-winning pianist Inon Barnatan, the London Philharmonic Orchestra launches its four-concert residency in electrifying style. In this eloquent programme, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a trio of dazzling soloists explore music that refreshes the heart and soul. From the subtleties and nuance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3 to the vivid imagery of Vivaldi’s evergreen Four Seasons, the LPO’s own Pieter Schoeman takes a handpicked team of colleagues on a journey into two of music’s most beautiful minds.

Schumann Overture, Genoveva Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1 in B-flat minor Op 23 Brahms Symphony No 3 in F major Op 90
Bach (arr. Stokowski) Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 Britten Violin Concerto in D minor Op 15 Butterworth A Shropshire Lad: Rhapsody Vaughan Williams Symphony No 4 in F minor
The Brighton Philharmonic’s season opens on a wave of grandeur and emotion, as Barry Wordsworth conducts works by the greatest masters of Romanticism.
Music by Britain’s greatest composers sits alongside a vivid reimagining of an 18th-century masterpiece in the Brighton Philharmonic’s second Dome concert.
The overture from Schumann’s only opera encapsulates themes of betrayal and reconciliation in music of exquisite tenderness and high drama. Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto — a rich tapestry of intense melody, surging power and quiet introspection — is a great vehicle for the young Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu. Finally, Brahms’s intensely lyrical Symphony No 3 charts a musical journey from turbulence to tranquillity.
First, Stokowski’s orchestration of the Toccata and Fugue transforms Bach’s precise Classicism into fullblown Romanticism. Then leading violinist Matthew Trusler performs Britten’s emotionally and technically demanding Violin Concerto, mysterious, martial and melodic by turns, before Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad: Rhapsody conjures the rural idyll of Edwardian England. The concert closes with Vaughan Williams’s Fourth Symphony, shot through with the composer’s rage, humour and poetic nature.

Elgar In the South (Alassio) Op 50 Ravel Piano Concerto in G major Rachmaninov Symphony No 2 in E minor, Op 27
From the sun-drenched Italian Riviera to the jazz clubs of pre-war America, the Brighton Philharmonic journeys through spectacular musical scenery in this evocative programme. Elgar’s concert overture In the South perfectly captures the grandeur of the Italian coast, while Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony combines epic scale, intimate moods and swooningly beautiful melodies. In between these two masterpieces, Melvyn Tan returns to Brighton to explore the jazzage glamour of pre-war America and Paris evoked in Ravel’s sumptuous and punchy Piano Concerto. One of the UK’s most brilliant orchestras is joined by the sensational French pianist David Fray for a concert brimming with melody and emotion, led by the Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits. Glazunov’s overture From the Middle Ages is saturated in sumptuous musical colours, harnessing plainsong and full-blown romance to evoke a world of troubadours and crusaders, monks and ladies fair. Russian Romanticism is also to the fore in Tchaikovsky’s Suite No 3, a work of beguiling spirit that progresses from languid to impassioned in music that displays all the poignancy and heartfelt emotion for which Tchaikovsky is so beloved. Between the two comes Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, revolutionary in its scale, drama and intensity, and both startlingly dramatic and richly melodic.

Beethoven String Quartet No 1 in F major, Op 18 Janácek Mládí Schumann String Quartet No 3 in A major Op 41/3
The Fournier Trio is blazing a trail through the chamber music world, performing regularly at the world’s leading venues. This programme of contrasts opens with the majesty and delight of Mendelssohn’s early masterpiece, which Schumann called ‘the master trio of our age’. Equally engaging is Turina’s sparkling and concise Trio No 2. Finally, Beethoven’s mighty ‘Archduke’ Trio is a tremendous outpouring of melody, emotion and technical virtuosity.
In their first concert of two this season, the Castalian Quartet performs one of the last and most ambitious quartets Haydn wrote, the crowning achievement of ‘the father of the string quartet’. Alongside, Dutilleux’s Ainsi le nuit of 1977 has been called ‘one of the treasures of the 20th-century quartet repertoire’, striking for its freedom and fluidity. The concert culminates in Beethoven’s Op 132 quartet, the second of his peerless late quartets, and the darkest.

Winner of a clutch of major awards, the Czech Zemlinsky Quartet explores the heyday of the string quartet repertory. Full of energy, drama and craftsmanship, Beethoven’s Op 18 quartet launched one of the greatest cycles of music in the entire classical canon. Janácek’s jaunty evocation of youth, which is arranged from the wind sextet, bubbles with enthusiasm and fresh ideas, while Schumann’s quartet, written in just a few days during his ‘year of chamber music’, 1842, is a highly original homage to Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
