Park is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. Vladimir Jurowski conductor Elena Tanski violin
Aziz Shokhakimov conductor Dmitri Berlinsky violin
Rachmaninov Isle of the Dead Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances
Beethoven Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No. 1
A feast of 20th-century Russian music conducted by one of the world’s most brilliant conductors opens in mysterious and sinister style, with a musical depiction of oars pulling through the gloom to the Isle of the Dead. Rachmaninov’s melancholy and hugely atmospheric symphonic poem couldn’t be more different in mood from his last orchestral work, the Symphonic Dances, whose sometimes unsettling leaps and twitches give way to passages of sinuous melody. The superb Austrian violinist Elena Tanski rounds off the programme with Prokofiev’s exquisite masterpiece, a work of tender, dreamy nonchalance. Sat 27 Sep, 7.30pm
The remarkable young Uzbeki conductor Aziz Shokhakimov explores the richness and majesty of the German repertory with two iconic works. The trouble-free radiance and joy of Beethoven’s only violin concerto is an exquisite showcase for the talents of the Russian virtuoso Dmitri Berlinsky. The expectation that Brahms would take up the mantle of Beethoven weighed heavily on the composer – one reason why his mighty First Symphony took 21 years to complete. It is a work that combines lyricism and majesty, and power and brilliance have led to it being called ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’.

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra
Barry Wordsworth conductor Natasha Paremski piano Glinka Overture, Ruslan and Lyudmila Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 Op.18 in C minor Shostakovich Symphony No.5 Op.47
The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s 90th season opens with the grandeur and Romantic sweep of the Russian repertory. The Orchestra is joined by the stunning Russian-American pianist Natasha Paremski for Rachmaninov’s glorious masterpiece, one of the best-loved works in the repertoire. The concerto is flanked by Glinka’s exhilarating overture to his opera Ruslan and Lyudmila and Shostakovich’s classically inspired, deeply moving Symphony No. 5. Sun 5 Oct, 2.45pm
Barry Wordsworth conductor Nicholas Daniel oboe Brighton Festival Chorus Schubert Marche Militaire Parry I Was Glad Strauss Oboe Concerto in D major Parry Blest Pair of Sirens Elgar Enigma Variations
A delightfully contrasting programme opens in foot-tapping style as Schubert’s irresistible Marche Militaire leads to two choral masterpieces by Parry: I Was Glad and Blest Pair of Sirens are works of sumptuous nobility that were performed at the Royal wedding in 2011. Enigma Variations includes the immortal ‘Nimrod’, the unofficial anthem of national remembrance, while Strauss’s sinuous Oboe Concerto makes an eloquent 150thanniversary tribute to the composer. This musical tour of Britain starts with Mendelssohn, at Fingal’s Cave, before travelling to Shropshire for Butterworth’s Housmaninspired rhapsody. The pastoral idyll of The Lark Ascending contrasts with the rugged Scottish landscape of McCunn’s splendid overture, then we visit Cornwall with Sullivan and Arnold, and enjoy the folk-songs evoked in the Norfolk Rhapsody before exploring the capital courtesy of Coates’s London Suite.
New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala Stephen Bell conductor Susana Gaspar soprano
Waltz towards 2015 with the immortal tunes of the Strauss Family at a New Year’s gala that will see the old year out in style. Blending some of the best-loved dance music ever written with a selection of glittering arias, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by the hugely popular Portuguese soprano Susana Gaspar for an afternoon of Viennese glamour. This is a fund-raising concert for the John Carewe Brighton Orchestra Trust, supporting the BPO.

Three Score Dance Company
Art in Mind
Winter Festival
Art in Mind are a group of young people who use art to campaign and raise awareness about their mental health experiences. Working in partnership with Brighton Dome and their Miss Represented project, Art in Mind have formed a collective with other youth groups from Brighton and Hove, to create an exhibition to celebrate World Mental Health Day.
Three Score Dance Company is three years old. Created to offer contemporary dance opportunities for women and men aged 60+, the company commissions work that engages, entertains and captures the imagination; delivering performances that change perceptions, challenge expectations and champion the art form of contemporary dance. Celebrate these first three years with a rich mixture of dance companies, some with experience and some newly formed – the only connection being that all dancers will all be over the age of 55.
You can also participate in a drop-in workshop from these inspiring young people and there will be live music in our Café-bar from 2–4pm to celebrate World Mental Health Day. The amazing debut of Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus and Ultima Vez in 1987 stunned the world of dance at the time. Vandekeybus and composers Thierry de Mey and Peter Vermeersch received the prestigious Bessie Award in New York for this ‘brutal confrontation of dance and music: the dangerous, combative landscape of What the Body Does Not Remember’. 28 years later and with a new cast, the show still stands as one of the most exciting pieces of dance ever made.

Don’t be a Scrooge this Christmas… If you want to get your seasonal shopping sewn up this year, then we have the perfect presents for your loved ones: • Purchase a Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival Membership as a gift and support your local arts organisation as well as treating the recipient to a range of benefits like priority booking for Brighton Festival and other Brighton Dome events all year round. Visit brightondome.org/ support_us or call 01273 260827 for details. • Tickets for a show are always wellreceived. One of our post-Christmas events – like our festive ballet A Christmas Carol or some wood-chucking fun with Timber! – would be an ideal stocking-filler for all ages. • If your friends would like to choose for themselves, then there is always the option of a Brighton Dome gift voucher. Whatever they redeem it on, we know they’ll have an experience to remember.
