Theatre

Guaranteed to cause an uproar, Avenue Q will take up a rowdy residence in the Concert Hall this September, whilst circus troupe Pirates of the Carabina return with Flown this Christmas. Following an immensely popular run at Brighton Festival 2014, it’s daft, daring and a lot of fun. Theatre audiences are huge fans of Bryony Kimmings’ work, so we’re especially excited to bring her new show Fake It ‘Til You Make It to the Studio Theatre.

I’m delighted to welcome back Brighton Festival 2014’s Guest Director Hofesh Shechter and his company with their brand new show barbarians, fresh from a rapturous response to its world tour. We’ve loved Hofesh’s imagination and dynamism for many years - whether you’re an existing fan or new to his work, I urge you to see the show. In the first of a series that puts the spotlight on those who bring our award-winning programme together, I’d like to introduce our music producer Laura Ducceschi to provide an insight into her autumn highlights…

Andrew Comben, Chief Executive It’s a strong season of music this autumn. Well-known names include Sufjan Stevens and John Grant, two kings among men making music at the moment. Godspeed You! Black Emperor have been on the wish list for many years. As a programmer, every so often I say to people ‘Please just trust me and come to this.’ This is definitely one of those times. Also on the must-see list is an exclusive collaboration between Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 and Akala, significant both musically and politically. Seun continues the legacy of his father Fela Kuti, who advocated freedom of speech in a committed way: he and his band Egypt 80 were repeatedly thrown in jail for refusing to keep quiet. At Brighton Dome’s invitation, Seun is joined by Akala, a formidable contemporary voice challenging racism and suppression of human rights. The two performers on stage together represents more than a great gig, more than exceptional music: it is art for change! Finally, we see the return of our earsthetic season of sonic and visual work presented as the artist intended - this year featuring the new performance project of CocoRosie’s ever-creative Bianca Casady, an immersive audio-visual journey with The Tiger Lillies, and more to be announced. Laura Ducceschi, Music Producer

barbarians A trilogy by Hofesh Shechter

‘Superb stuff: juicy, nervy ensembles and a wittily unsettling commentary’ The Guardian on the barbarians in love

the barbarians in love © Gabriele Zucca

As Guest Director of Brighton Festival 2014, Hofesh Shechter led a programme which the Daily Telegraph described as ‘visionary’. Now the infinitely unpredictable Shechter is back to present a sparse world for three wildly different takes on intimacy, passion and the banality of love.

together complete an evening showcasing the singular, wry voice of their creator and the versatility of his talented dancers.

Revealing his choreography at its most elegant and intimate, the highly acclaimed and perturbing the barbarians in love opens the evening. Trembling with emotion residing within order, six white-clad figures move as one to the strains of an ecclesiastic baroque score.

Hofesh Shechter Company is an Associate Company of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival.

What follows, as two very different works unfold, is a volatile explosion of dubstep grooves in tHE bAD – at once joyous and trance-like – and a poignant duet which

Renowned for creations of visceral energy, as well as her collaborations with outstanding composers, Shobana Jeyasingh’s works are powerful, precise, sophisticated and accessible. Here, the company presents a highly visual double bill of Strange Blooms (2013), a piece inspired by the cellular life of plants and commissioned for the company’s 25th anniversary, twinned with a brand new work. Material Men is a virtuoso piece for two dazzling performers of the Indian diaspora, one classical and the other hip-hop. Two different styles and two shared cultural origins create a dynamic exploration of rhythm, location and history. Material Men features newly commissioned music by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, performed live by The Smith Quartet. Plus post-show discussion. Chotto Desh

Akram Khan’s DESH was an instant hit when it was first presented in 2011. Now, Akram Khan Company and Theatre-Rites director Sue Buckmaster have adapted this much-loved production for children and their families.

Presented in association with MOKO Dance, an Arts Council England supported dance partnership dedicated to opening the eyes of children and their families to the power of dance.

Chotto Desh, meaning ‘small homeland’, draws on Khan’s unique quality of crosscultural storytelling, creating a compelling tale of a young man’s dreams and memories from Britain to Bangladesh. Using a mix of dance, text, visuals and sound, Chotto Desh celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the modern world and promises to be a magical, thrilling and poignant dance theatre experience for families to enjoy together.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo 2015 Fabulous, award-winning, scene-stealing... Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (or The Trocks to their friends) make a welcome return to Brighton Dome this autumn.

‘One of the funniest evenings you’ll ever spend in the theatre’

Hurtling through the classical ballet repertoire with their inimitable blend of skill, grace and wit as sharp as scissors en pointe, The Trocks have been a global phenomenon since they formed in New York in 1974.

‘Highbrow hilarity from New York’s marvellous all-male ballerinas. Priceless’

Effortlessly displaying their technical prowess and their no-less extraordinary make-up skills, the programme includes the show-stopping Swan Lake (Act II); extract from La Esmeralda; the Merce Cunningham-inspired Patterns in Space; and new for 2015, Don Quixote.

With special guest Akala ‘Music has great impact on people's feelings,’ Seun Kuti says. ‘That's what music should be. Pop music today is all about me, me, me. Nobody is singing about we.’ The youngest son of Nigeria’s musical and political revolutionary Fela Kuti took control of his father’s band Egypt 80 at the age of 14. Hailed as continuing Fela’s musical legacy, he has been laying down a potent version of those indestructible rhythms ever since. Now frontman and saxophonist Seun firmly sets the classic Egypt 80 sound in the modern era, fuelled by call-andresponse hooks, breakneck tempos and combative, topical lyricism.

In this exclusive show for Brighton Dome, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 are joined on stage by London-born rapper, poet and journalist Akala, whose articulate, socially conscious hip hop has won him a MOBO award for best hip-hop artist and critical acclaim for his most recent album Knowledge is Power II. Hollow Meadows sees Hawley return to the classic, sophisticated songwriting and subtle arrangements that made him so widely loved and revered in the first place. Meditating on such themes as ageing, fallibility and relationships, much of the album shares a brooding, yet wistful and romantic atmosphere in keeping with early albums Late Night Final and Lowedges, as well as touches of 2009’s Truelove’s Gutter and Standing at the Sky’s Edge. The Tiger Lillies Lulu: A Murder Ballad Written by Martyn Jacques Performed by The Tiger Lillies and Laura Caldow Directed and Designed by Mark Holthusen

The Tiger Lillies’ genre-defying brand of otherworldly vocals and unnerving performance style have carved them a unique niche in the cabaret and music theatre scene. After a sell-out run of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the cult creators of the award-winning Shockheaded Peter now stage another adaptation of a macabre classic. The character of Lulu is one of the great creations of 20th century fiction, and one of its most disturbing. Her unbridled sex appeal, her youth, and her self-destructiveness combine to make her dangerous, unpredictable and tragic. With the men (and the women) who circle her, Lulu’s journey from street prostitute to the toast of society and back again, is told as a hypnotic and kaleidoscopic dance of death. Journey with her from Berlin to Paris and finally to the dark London streets of Jack The Ripper. The band's flamboyant live performance is enhanced by large scale virtual sets that create an immersive and richly atmospheric environment. Mark Holthusen, creator of the visual spectacle we saw in The Tiger Lillies last sell out show here in Brighton Festival 2013 – The Rime of the Ancient Mariner collaborates again with The Tiger Lillies in Lulu and for this project is joined by dancer Laura Caldow.

Disco Pigs Written by Enda Walsh Directed by Cathal Cleary

Born seconds apart, Darren and Sinead, aka Pig and Runt, live in a fantasy world of their own in Cork city. Trash TV, disco beats and cheap booze have fuelled this obsessive friendship. But as they go for their 17th birthday binge, reality violently collides with their fantasy and their world begins to crumble. Written by Enda Walsh, award winning writer of The Walworth Farce, The New Electric Ballroom, Penelope and Camera d’Or winning screenplay Hunger, Disco Pigs is a furious, funny and violent dash through a friendship too close to survive.

‘Funny and terrifying at the same time, Disco Pigs is superb’ The Independent êêêê

Men in the Cities Written & performed by Chris Goode Directed by Wendy Hubbard

‘An important, zeitgist-pricking piece from one of the UK's most interesting theatre-makers’ The Independent Hot on the heels of a second successful run at the Royal Court, Brighton Dome welcomes the experimental storytelling of Chris Goode, described by The Guardian as ‘a theatre maker of infinite talent and infinite compassion’. Framed by two violent deaths – the apparently inexplicable suicide of a young gay man, and the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in Woolwich in 2013 – this Fringe First-winning solo show is a compelling piece about harm, complicity, and the forces that shape our relationships. Through fractured snapshots of seemingly disconnected lives, Men in the Cities presents a challenging but radically humane portrait of how we live now.

Elgar Sanguine Fan Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme Schubert Symphony No.9 (The Great)

Dvorák Overture: In Nature’s Realm Strauss Horn Concerto No.1 Bruckner Symphony No.4

The BPO’s 91st season opens with two works by Russian composers, one of which is rarely heard outside Russia. Tchaikovsky’s dramatic symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini describes the tragic fate of the heroine of Dante’s Divine Comedy. It is paired with Kalinnikov’s Symphony No.1, a tuneful work that established the composer’s reputation (endorsed by Tchaikovsky himself) shortly before his untimely death. The programme is completed by Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto performed by Stephen Hough in a wonderful start to the season.

The seven Variations on a Rococo Theme remain the closest Tchaikovsky ever came to writing a cello concerto: harking back to Mozart and Haydn, they show remarkable virtuosity and craftsmanship, here performed by Gemma Rosefield. We open this concert with Elgar’s Sanguine Fan, originally conceived as a one-act ballet in 1917 to raise money for charities during WW1; revived by Adrian Boult in 1973, it has been a concert favourite ever since. Also included are the majestic proportions of Schubert’s final symphony ‘The Great’, perhaps his most exciting piece for orchestra.

Richard Strauss wrote a number of works for solo instruments and orchestra. Completed early in his career, the Horn Concerto No.1 reflects the influence of Schumann and Mendelssohn on the young composer, and is performed here by soloist Martin Owen. The concert opens with Dvorák’s overture, one of a trilogy depicting nature, life and love in his native Bohemia. Meanwhile Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No.4 depicts a bygone era of knights hunting in the forest and life in a medieval city, nicknamed ‘The Romantic’ by the composer himself.

London Philharmonic Orchestra

Robin Ticciati leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra in this celebration of exquisite orchestral craftsmanship. At the heart of this concert is Ravel’s toe-tapping concerto, a musical postcard from the streets of Harlem where he experienced the harmonic exoticism and rhythmic drive of jazz. The composer is a little more restrained in his teasing waltzes, which come with the same clarity and luminous restraint that imbues Fauré’s delicate reflection of the tragedy of Pelléas et Mélisande. To finish comes Debussy’s orchestral depiction of the sea, sketched down on the coast in Eastbourne: a swirling musical canvas unrivalled in its subtlety and evocation. Sat 14 Nov, 7.30pm

Heritage and Open Days

Heritage Open Day

Iconic architecture and design of Brighton Dome The unmistakable design and architecture of Brighton Dome is the focus for our third annual Heritage Open Day, as we fling open our doors for a celebration of our rich history. With a host of free activities, including an architectural walking tour of the Royal Pavilion Estate with Brighton’s best-known history tour guide Dr Geoffrey Mead, and a demonstration of our magnificent theatre organ to evoke a bygone era, join us for a journey back in time to the beginnings of our iconic building. When the Prince Regent (later King George IV) commissioned architect William Porden to build his personal stables and riding house in 1803, it would become a project that would take five years to complete at a cost that almost bankrupted the Prince (the King eventually appealed to Parliament to clear his son’s debts). Known for his taste for flamboyant fashion, his one-of-a-kind creation drew inspiration from the great Jami Masjid in Delhi for the exterior, while a segmented glass ceiling of its interior owed a debt to the Corn Exchange in Paris. Don’t jump through hoops this Christmas

If you want to get your seasonal shopping sewn up this year, then we have the perfect presents for your loved ones: • Purchase a Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival Membership as a gift and support your local arts organisation as well as treating the recipient to a range of benefits like priority booking for Brighton Festival and other Brighton Dome events all year round. Visit brightondome.org/support_us or call 01273 260827 for details. • Tickets for a show are always well-received. Our post-Christmas events - like our festive ballet The Snow Queen - would be an ideal stocking-filler. • If your friend would like to choose for themselves, then there is always the option of a Brighton Dome gift voucher. Whatever they redeem it on, we know they’ll have an experience to remember.
