Who’s Afraid of the Human Rights Act?

European Aerial Dance Festival Gravity & Levity, in association with South East Dance and Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, is delighted to be hosting the EADF for the 6th year. As well as some of the more familiar classes for participants to develop their aerial skills, there will be a whole host of extra classes and weekend treats this year too. Bookings available through eventbrite.com. Mon 10 – Sun 16 Aug Corn Exchange

Hailed as an Act to ‘bring rights home’, the UK Human Rights Act was passed in 1998 with cross-party support. It has come under attack from successive governments and the media, blamed for a wide variety of ills: from exploitation by convicted criminals to unbalancing the constitution. We explore why some critics deem it ‘insufficiently British’, ask what a proposed Conservative British Bill of Rights would look like, and consider what it would mean to lose the Human Rights Act all together. Panel Includes: Dr Michael PintoDuschinsky, Professor John Dearlove, Dr Caroline Skeet and Paul Bowen QC.
