With 67% of the funding now in place, we are moving closer towards realising our redevelopment plans which will see a major refurbishment of the nationally-important Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre, as part of an ambitious culture and heritage-led vision for the whole of the Royal Pavilion Estate.
p4 Digital Festival
As we lay the groundwork for this new phase, with preparatory works starting in the Studio Theatre and Corn Exchange in the autumn, our rich and varied programme continues in the Concert Hall. Highights include the return of the inimitable BalletBoyz; a diverse music programme that features cabaret king Alan Cumming and Grammy winner Corinne Bailey Rae alongside resident orchestras BPO and LPO; and top flight comedy from the likes of Nina Conti, Henning Wehn, Russell Kane and many more.
p18 Christmas
Our packed Christmas season pairs a magical staging of Alice in Wonderland by Ballet Theatre UK with the high-octane circus of Catch Me! from the internationally acclaimed Quebec ensemble Flip FabriQue. You will also find us popping up in partner venues across the city, including the recently opened Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA) at University of Sussex, which plays host to jazz favourites GoGo Penguin, and our much-loved Coffee Concert chamber music series which migrates there later in the season.

Glinka Waltz Fantasy Walton Cello Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4
Osmo Vänskä conductor Tasmin Little violin
© Marco Borggreve
The London Philharmonic Orchestra opens its new season in Brighton with Walton’s glittering Italian fantasy of a violin concerto, performed by Tasmin Little. There’s no mistaking the purity and freshness of the Finnish landscape as evoked in Sibelius’s Sixth Symphony, and paired with the monumental Seventh Symphony on this occasion, it’s some of the most serenely beautiful music he ever wrote. Sat 29 Oct, 7.30pm
Dima Slobodeniouk conductor Dane Johansen cello
For Tchaikovsky, Glinka was the acorn from which all Russian music grew. So there’s no more fitting upbeat to Tchaikovsky’s impassioned Fourth Symphony than this delightful miniature from the ballrooms of Imperial St Petersburg. And then, with a shattering fanfare, Tchaikovsky lets fly with the symphony in which he poured out his soul. It’s a gripping showcase for guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk; first, though, he joins the young American cellist Dane Johansen to bask in the Mediterranean warmth of Walton’s sunlit Cello Concerto. Chris Dobrowolski
Antarctica
Antarctica: the driest, windiest, most inhospitable place on earth. It’s a place synonymous with failed expedition attempts, and one with no artists for miles around. A place that Chris Dobrowolski decided was perfect for him. For three and a half months Chris lived and worked at the British Antarctic Survey, trying to experiment creatively whilst (crucially) trying to survive. In this performance lecture, Chris presents an adventure story about overcoming hardships and celebrating difference, via tales of carnivorous ducks, Ladybird books and a sledge built out of gold picture frames. Created with support from British Antarctic Survey, Farnham Maltings and Colchester Arts Centre. Dramaturgy by Cheryl Pierce. Produced by Artsadmin.

Who Should Pay for Access to Justice? Since the introduction of fees to employment tribunals, there has been a 70% drop in the number of cases brought. Lord Dyson described the research done by the Government before introducing fees as ‘lamentable’, and yet the Justice Committee has no objection to the principle of charging fees to court users. Should access to justice be free at the point of delivery? Or should it be viewed as any service?

The transformation of the Corn Exchange will restore and reveal original heritage features of the former Prince Regent's

Devoted & Disgruntled Shall we create a European Union of Artists? Join Improbable as they bring their Open Space conversation, Devoted & Disgruntled, to Brighton Dome for a post-referendum response. Here in Brighton, we have the UK’s only Green MP, a demographic rich in graduates, high numbers of young people, and we value the creative industries. Many are proud to live in such a liberal and opinionated city. Yet now it feels like we are out of step with large parts of the country. How can we stop preaching to the choir and reach out to hear different voices, different opinions? Perhaps people have been excluded from the conversations until now, or perhaps we just haven’t been listening to each other.
This is an opportunity for artists and those who support the arts to do what we do best: envision, collaborate, and take action. Let’s ask some important questions, share information about how we proceed, and make our next steps for what the arts can do postreferendum.
