Redevelopment works are well underway on our Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre to improve your experience at our venues. Along with restoring long-lost heritage features, we are building a creative space, a street-facing café, new bars and public spaces for you to relax and enjoy our iconic regency architecture. Recent developments include: • Revealing of 200-year-old timbers which form the unique roof of the Corn Exchange. • Installation of the glass skylight above the new Gallery area, which will have a new bar and offer views into the Corn Exchange. • Construction of a new balcony in the Studio Theatre to give a more intimate feel to this versatile space. With 90% funding in place, we need your help to raise £250,000 in public donations to support our grand transformation. Donate to build.brightondome.org

Lisa Hammond and Rachael Spence with Improbable

Still No Idea When best mates Lisa and Rachael made their first show together they hit the streets and asked the public for ideas. Seeing Lisa in a wheelchair and Rachael not, the public’s reaction was funny, jawdropping and ultimately heartbreaking. They made a show about it called N o Idea. Ten years on and there are more disabled people in the mainstream media, Lisa landed a big part on TV and disabled mates are getting regular auditions happy days. So what kind of exciting stories are the TV professionals dreaming up for them? Part verbatim theatre, part improv, part comedy sketch show, this is a raucous and mischievous exposé of good intentions gone bad.

Glinka Overture, Ruslan and Ludmilla Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Beethoven Symphony No. 4

The opulence, the melody and the sheer romance of Russian music open the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Brighton Dome season in sumptuous style. The Overture to Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmilla provides a zesty prelude to one of the great masterworks of the Romantic era: Rachmaninoff’s yearning, impassioned Second Piano Concerto, a superb showcase for one of the country’s most brilliant instrumentalists, Benjamin Grosvenor. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, mingling majesty and lyricism in music of great emotional power, brings the programme to a glittering close. Sat 20 Oct, 7.30pm

A violinist of rare distinction, Carolin Widmann is the soloist in an irresistible programme that will soothe and stimulate in equal measure. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, in which poignancy and joie de vivre combine to glittering effect, is flanked by two of Vaughan Williams’s best-loved works: the sweepingly emotional Tallis Fantasia and the exquisite The Lark Ascending, an idyllic evocation of summer. In contrast, Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony crackles with energy and good humour and is sure to send the audience out on a high.

The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by Brighton Festival Chorus for a stirring opening to its autumn season. Shostakovich’s lively Festive Overture provides an orchestral prelude to a feast of British choral music. Handel’s

Freddy Kempf piano/director Rossini Overture, Semiramide Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor Op. 37 Dvorák Symphony No 7 in D minor Op. 70

masterpiece Zadok the Priest is followed by Parry’s profoundly moving response to World War One, commissioned for the 1914 Brighton Music Festival. Then Elgar moves from the bustle of Edwardian London, depicted in the Cockaigne Overture, to the idyll of a Bavarian summer, interspersed with two glorious settings of Psalms. Sun 14 Oct, 2.45pm Nicolas Chisholm, chair of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, will be giving a talk on Brighton’s own orchestra for 94 years on Fri 14 Sep, 1pm. See p31 for details

Ben Gernon conductor Tamsin Waley-Cohen violin Mozart Symphony No 35 in D major K385, (Haffner)  Violin Concerto No 5 in A major K219, (Turkish) Beethoven Symphony No 7 in A major Op. 92

Freddy Kempf, a favourite of audiences since winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1992, is the director and soloist in a programme that journeys from the brilliant fireworks of Rossini’s overture to Semiramide to the sombre beauty of Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony, an intimate work of which the composer wrote ‘what is in my mind is Love, God, and my Fatherland’. The centrepiece is Beethoven’s intense Third Piano Concerto, which veers from delight to despair in music that mines the depths of emotion and melodic inspiration.

Two Brighton favourites, the conductor Ben Gernon and the violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen, explore works of irresistible zest and wit by two musical titans. First, Mozart’s Symphony No 35 is full of energy and invention, while his Fifth Violin Concerto is spirited and serene by turns, with a lightness of touch that verges on the mischievous. Then the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra scales the peaks of Beethoven’s romping Seventh Symphony, which surges to one of the most thrilling endings in all music.

The Marmen Quartet is blazing a trail in the chamber music world: founded just five years ago, it has already won the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Albert and Eugene Frost Prize and the Ensemble category of the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition. Its virtuosity is glitteringly showcased in a programme that travels from Haydn, ‘the father of the string quartet’, to Beethoven, whose quartets are the unrivalled masterpieces of the form, via Janácek, one of the 20th century’s most original musical voices. With a clutch of international awards to its name and several works written for it by leading composers, the Jacquin Trio is rapidly establishing itself at the forefront of young ensembles to note. Its versatility is perfectly demonstrated in a concert that places works by the British composer Charlotte Bray alongside contrasting pieces by Mozart, Schumann, Stravinsky and Bartók, and brings the trio repertory right up to date with the world premiere of a new work by Colin Matthews.

Philip Higham is a major interpreter of the music of Bach; in 2008 he became the first British cellist to win the prestigious International Bach Competition in Leipzig, and last year he won acclaim for his performance of all six of Bach’s immortal Cello Suites at the Wigmore Hall, London. In this exquisite programme, he performs three of the suites alongside ricercare by Gabrielli which, as the first works published for solo cello, surely inspired Bach. Sun 9 Dec, 11am

Ballet Theatre UK

Sleeping Beauty This enchanting production, set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious music, reawakens the magic of the world’s favourite fairy tale. Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, Princess Aurora lives in a castle where fairies bestow her with gifts of beauty, temperament, purity, joy and generosity. The wicked Fairy Carabosse places a curse on Aurora - to prick her finger on a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday... and die! The beautiful and kind Lilac Fairy casts a spell to counter the curse so that instead of dying Aurora falls asleep for a hundred years. Only the touch of true love’s kiss can awaken her and undo the evil spell…

'Glittering costumes, expressive dancers . . . a pleasure to witness a production of this calibre' Dance Europe

Now in their sixth Christmas season in Brighton, join Ballet Theatre UK’s talented young company of international dancers for a magical Christmas outing for the whole family.

Sussex Salon ‘Votes for Life’: Should Britons living abroad keep their voting rights in the UK? British citizens who move abroad currently lose their voting rights after 15 years. Controversially, this prevented many from voting in the EU Referendum which would have a major impact on their lives. A number of dedicated campaigners have been lobbying for many years to have the time restriction removed, and the government is now supporting

a Private Member’s Bill to meet these demands and grant ‘Votes for Life’. But the bill is politically controversial and has many opponents. The Salon will provide a forum outside the constraining framework of Westminster politics for discussion of the arguments for and against the bill as it proceeds through Parliament. The panel will include a politician, an ex-pat campaigner, a representative of a pro-democracy organisation and an academic.
